Work Ethic

"Opportunity is missed by most people because it's dressed in overalls and looks like work."

I love that quote from Thomas Edison.  And as someone who's worked as a grocery store bagger and shopping cart fetcher, a department store stockman and a lawn mower, I appreciate what Edison was talking about.

On Thursday, we've got a great story about an 18-year-old with a great work ethic.  Know anybody like him?

My grandfather was a private in Vietnam, and I know from his stories that he worked so hard to get those people out of there. He is truly a hero.

My sister has very good work ethic. She likes to clean for fun. When she's bored, she'll organize cabinets, clean off counter tops, and just pick up stuff that's laying around.

When my dad first came to America, he had no money. He had to study and work at the same time. He worked 3 jobs and studied at the same time. That's impressive. He worked about 10 hours everyday because he had to raise me. I came by a surprise. My dad was determined to keep me and make sure I lived in a safe neighborhood while getting a good education.

Messi in soccer. Is the best player. Messi unlike other players when he falls down he gets back up, when he loses the ball he chases it. He is the first one to practice and the last one to leave, Messi dose all that and he is the best player in the world.

I have a student who is a senior. He has a job at a local restaurant – and he hates it. However, he shows up for work on time, does the best job he can, and puts on a happy face for his co-workers. In addition, he does not complain about his job. I believe that this shows a great work ethic and dedication. This will take him far in life!

Smile, and stay positive. That's always what I hear people tell me in order to have a good work ethic. I'm a senior in high school and this really has been helping me, keeping in mind to have an open and positive mind. My grandma is my biggest modivation for this.

I work at one of many mcdonalds restraunts even though i sometimes dont like working there and never want to come in when i am scheduled or called, i still do because its responsibility. In my mind, i think the employers call me in more because they know i will always come in no matter what time day or night because i built a certain reputation of always being there when i am needed, this is what makes true work ethic. Being there on time and doing your best because at my workplace, peoples attitudes matter to me. Work is life for me and even though mcdonalds is a small job, its a great start to something bigger......

My father knows a solider who lived on the outskirts of New Orleans. He lived with his mother, was very poor and only owned one uniform. After hurricane Katrina hit, he walked all the way from the out shirts of town to Superdome. He told his commanding officer that was ready to work where ever needed. The world needs more people like him.

People always pass opportunities for a job.Opportunities may knock on your door, but Americans pretend it was never there and move on with there life, but that was there mistake. Later in life they look back and say i should have taken the opportunity.

  36. Kendall

Yes, in fact i do. But some people are judgemental towards other people. You never know what someone is capable of, until they actually get a chance to disperse their talent.

    February 28, 2013 at 9:43 am |
  37. Brandon

People always pass up job opportunities because they're too "lazy" and they don't want to work. We have such a high unemployment rate because of this issue, people are just too lazy to work. Job opportunities may not always come knocking on your door, which is why we must go out and look for one. If we want to lower the unemployment rate in America we must go out and look for a job. Think about Thomas Edison and how many jobs he held, why can't everyone be like him. I know that it may be hard to hold many jobs like him but it is not as hard to hold at least 1 or 2 jobs.

What a great story! We had a lively class discussion about work ethic after viewing this story. My 7th graders could not believe the lengths (walking 10 miles in snow and ice) the boy was willing to go to in order to APPLY for a job. It really made them realize that jobs/opportunity does not come to you and you need do do something too!

As a teacher, the idea of work ethic is integral to my profession. I had the opportunity to student teach with an amazing role model in the area of work ethic. His name is Ed Colburn and he was a junior high teacher in Fort Collins, Colorado for more than 30 years. A great way to develop work ethic is to be mentored by people who demonstrate it every day.

Work ethic is ingrained into our heads at my school. We have an acronym- PAWS- the w stands for work ethic. It's taken very seriously, and it inspires me to see so many people all working on projects and homework. There is so much pride in being able to say, "Yeah, at my school good work ethic is expected and upheld."

While this is a good and inspiring quote, it is not completely accurate. There are plenty of hard-working people out there who wouldn't pass up a job just because it looked like work.

Work Ethic Is a sign of hard work. When you have a good work ethic it usually pays off. It's a really important thing to have. It could give you a really good career. Like getting job. If you have a bad worth ethic you could end up being homeless, into drugs, or in jail. That is why a good work ethic is good to have.

Work ethic is very important in life and helps you succeed in almost anything you do. I learned work ethic through sports because my dad taught me that if you are not the best at something or you are having a bad game your work ethic will determine your success because it is the only thing you can control in the game or in life.

I think that work ethic is very important. Someone's work ethic is a big part of how succesfull they are going to be. If someone puts absolutly no effort into anything the odds are that they won't have the chance to. No one would want to hire someone who does't try, they want somebody who will give it their all even if it's tough.

    February 28, 2013 at 4:30 pm |
  75. Cheyenne

Work ethic is very very important! Especially at an early age, beause then you have good habbits from the start. What work ethic you are taught or do, will most likely carry over onto your adult years. Work ethic can be the difference between getting the job, and not gettng it. When you have a good work ethic, it will help you be more successful in life and in a job. No one would want to hire someone who always shows up late, and never does there work! Also I think that work ethic shows up very strongly in someones grades.

To work is to have meaning. Without working you are just a unused gear to a machine which could be used for great things. But without parts a machine is nothing, a scrap of metal. When you truly understand the capability of something with your help, you'll understand why having a good work ethic will change the course of your life. Your life is a machine and every choice you make is a gear to that machine. I don't want my life to end with an uncomplete machine, so my work ethic is means everything to me.

“Working hard becomes a habit, a serious kind of fun. You get self-satisfaction from pushing your self to the limit, knowing that all the effort is going to pay off.” ~ Mary Lou Retton

Work ethic can be thought of in many different catagories. Academics, athletics. But it means the same thing. It's not the definition on a page, it's the work ethic that keeps you going, that pushes you father than you thought you could go. But sometimes, someone has to bring it out of you, to make you the best you could possibly be. For me, my basketball coaches are a huge inspiration. They put time and effort into our practices, to make sure we improve, pushing us to strive for perfection. My team mates are also an inspiration. They don't give up, and push each other to do their best and improve.

My father is someone i've always looked up to for his amazing work ethic. Presently, he works at an RV shop as the service manager and works from 7:00am to 7:00pm and still is able to come home and enjoy his time with us. He rarely complains about work, no matter how hard it was, and never gives up. He often stays after work until 12:00am at the end of the month to get all his work done.

That's so inspiring and amazing that he was going to walk 7 to 10 miles in the ice and snow just for a interview to get a job. What else is so help full and nice is that guy told him where it was and a minute later he gave him a ride, that's cool because we don't have a lot of people that would to that in this society.

    February 28, 2013 at 4:56 pm |
  81. Liliana

I think work ethic is important because if someone wants to work, they come to work not slack off and be lazy all day. A person who has a good work ethic is some one you will walk in the ice and snow just to get to work. A person that has a bad work ethic will make excuses and not go to work. If you have a good work ethic and someone notices they will open the door of opportunity for you.

I like how that guy was determined to get to where he needed to go. When he asked a man how far his destination was the man said 11 miles. The guy kept walking in the snow then the man saw him still walking and gave him a ride. The man then gave him a job because he knew he was always going to show up for work because the guy was determined to walk all the way to his destination.

I believe that he was determined to get that job at the thrift store. I would have offered him a job that's not seven or eight more miles like the owner said; I also would've gave him some hot cocoa or some tea. I think that the owner respected him for being determined to go to the job interview and he saw that he really wanted that job because he believed that was all he could get.

I think the 18 year old guy had the effort to walk 6-7 miles in the cold and snow and he was going all the way over there to get a job at the store. The man was graceful to give the 18 year old kid a job at his store.

I believe that the man that gave the teenager a ride to his job was a very nice thing to do. For the teenager to be walking all the way to his interview in the snow when its cold outside and this shows that he was determined.

The story of the man shows a lot of perseverance because he walks like six to seven miles to get a job so that shows us that we should not be lazy to go to places such as school. So I can't believe that man would even walk like seven miles, because some kids would just give up and not even try.

My feeling about the boy that was going to walk 10 mile was sad. People in our class do that. People have excuses for not bringing there homework in.Other people then don't tell the truth to the teacher. With people telling the truth they will be honest.

When I saw the video about the guy I was thinking to myself. If I was that guy I would do the same thing because I would never lose my job. He shows real determination, and I appreciate that!

My mom has a great work ethic. The last time she had a sick day she had pneumonia, her motto is "The horses don't take sick days so why should I?"

My grandmother was ALWAYS ready to work. She was the babysitter of our family, cook of the family, one of the main moneymakers in our family and so much more! She never wore a frown and never turned anyone away. I think there should be more people like this in society. Life would be so much more...well lovable!

Actually, I do. There was this boy who was trying to find a job somewhere so that he could prove to his family that he wasn't useless. He asked around many times, and was rejected every single time. He finally found a job at an animal shelter (he had always loved animals) and eventually became a vet. He's my uncle and I'm proud of him.

I know this man who was out of a job and was looking for a new one. He found a job to work at a warehouse that sells artificial flowers. The conditions were terrible, there was no air conditioning, etc. Yet, he did not miss this oppurtunity to get a job and now, he is the owner of the warehouse. Just because something looks tiring and grueling does not mean you should ignore the oportunity to get a job. It might just pay off.

I don't physically now him, but the person is Dr. Martin Luther King. Work was basically his middle name. He strived for social justice for people of all races, religion, and genders. Some with a work ethic like his is definitley going to make it in life

Many people have good work ethics. For one my mother. She is alight attendant and works over 15 days a month flying to other countries or states. She has been doing such for 28 years. When I saw this boy he instantly reminded me of her. Good work ethic is Important. And can look good in the long run.

My boy friend will do any job he can. He wakes up at 5:30am leaves around 6 am and rides his bike across town to stand in front of home depot from 7am-12pm to find work and he rarely gets any work but when he does he works hard. he is a landscaper but dosnt have a licence or even a high school diploma. Hes a hard worker and he dosnt text or call me when hes working (only on his lunch breaks thats are about 10 minutes). It makes me sad because people are so mean about it and racist because hes mexican (yes he was born in US). Hes been through so much and lives on ends meat, if even that!

I think hisworkethic is good, because not a lot of people will work hard to get a job. If you are a kid I think that it is your parents fault fornot teaching you to be determined and work hard. They do what they see and take the easy way out.

One person I know with a good work ethic (and is one of my biggest role models) is my father. He is always striving to arrive at work on time and foucuses solely on putting forth maximum effort into his work.

I have a sister who works really hard to find a job. She may not work as hard as some people because she's still a senior at college. But she always writes resamays for people who are looking for people to hire. I know that because my dad is constantly editing them. She really wants to find a job and she looks at all opportunities. All her friends have gotten interviews so she doesn't want to be the only one who hasn't gotten an interview. I really hope she can find a job and after all hard work always pays off in the end. 😀

When I helped out with a food and clothing bank, I met a man named Patrick. Now he was homeless and lived under a small bridge near the bank. When I met him, I saw that he was just a ordinary person trying to give his best shot at life. So when ever I saw him at the bank, I would have done anything to fit his needs. As I get older, I hope I can find better ways to help him.

I think the world needs people more like this. With people who are willing to give anything and everything just to get a job and show they really care about the betterment of the United States , I think we can get the economy back on track.

I do know someone like him. Actually lots of people.I believe that everyone who is successful has passed through that stage , and has worked as hard as they can as they can to get there. Being successful might seem like a lot of work but it will pay off, trust me.My uncle started as a person who sold fish on the street in his car, and now he owns one of the biggest import-export of sea food businesses in Mexico.

its is good but sometimes bad to have good work ethic. and i mostly think its bad because my Dad works all the time hes good at being fixing cars but not good at being a father. i guess some people lose track of their family and when work ethics come be for family it hearts both ur family and your self. we have to have that cents of control. thank you
