It's gotta be something difficult to go without, so vegetables or dodgeball don't count.
While we were talking about Lent in Thursday's show, we started thinking about things we could reluctantly (but realistically) give up. ย Steak would be a tough one for me, but I know I could do it. ย Texting would be tougher - not sure I could commit to that one.
Whether or not you celebrate Lent, what's something you enjoy that you think you could live without for 40 days?

Every year at Lent, my wife and I institute a practice of abstinence and engagement. We choose something in our lives that's proven to be distracting from our walk with God – not necessarily something bad, just something that's filling that we can do without. Last year I gave up nationwide news, such as Fox and CNN (no offense). Then we also choose to engage in something that draws us closer to God, such as praying for X number of minutes or intentionally journaling on a daily basis. The idea comes from Dallas Willard's "Spirit of the Disciplines" book. May this be a fulfilling season for all – Catholic, Protestant, or otherwise.

As an Eastern Orthodox Christian, Lent is a Vegan affair. Orthodox Christians traditionally give up all meat (including fish), dairy, eggs, alcohol, and olive oil. This is an ancient practice that I was rather sad to hear that few western Christians ever observe. I think a traditional observance of a strict Lenten fast could greatly renew some of the spiritual awareness lost to our Catholic and Protestant brothers and sisters.
