Armstrong's Rough Ride
After he reportedly admitted to Oprah Winfrey that he used performance-enhancing drugs, cyclist Lance Armstrong is taking a beating by the public. Some of his former fans feel misled at best - furious at worst. Critics are calling him everything from a loser to a liar. He does have his defenders, many of whom are pointing to his Livestrong Foundation and its work to raise money for cancer research. But by and large in the court of public opinion, his reputation is seeing its worst days.
Do you think the public will ever forgive Armstrong? And do you think it should?

I think he done the wrong thing for using those drugs I believe if your good at something then you shouldn't need something even better and he lied and said that he didn't but really he did because he admitted it but alot of people have so i think they will forgive him.
what if he never did dope maybe he just said that to get everything all over with it and not have people accuse him
i think that it wasn't fair to the people who didn't win because if Armstrong cheated, then they really did win

I think the public will forgive him eventually, but I think they shouldn't. He posed as a role model and hero to many cancer patients by surviving the cancer then winning all those titles. Then to find out he has been doping crushed the dreams of many cancer survivors. That's just unforgivable.

He didn't "crush the dreams" of cancer survivors...the fact that Lance survived cancer hasn't changed at all. He is STILL a cancer survivor.
I think that Armstrong should be forgiven, I think that everyone deserves a second chance. The public is being a bit harsh, but maybe that will teach him a very good lesson.

I totally agree with you, Katie. I think public will be see all aspect of problems, not just one. They need see what he done with all people was fighting with cancer, and help them have on dreams. The cheating only a mistake, so we can forgive him about that.
OR it could teach kids that if they want to be sports superstars, they have to use steroids. I'm not going to forgive him.

Although he raises fund for the cancer, he got the money in not so good way. It also harmed other fair-riders who were practicing hard for the race. But still, regarding his good work to the society, I think we should punish him less harshly.

I honestly think that Armstrong will be fizzled out of the public eye after this, and won't really be mentioned again. As for the public forgiving him, that seems highly unlikely. I do believe, though, that everyone deserves a second chance, even a person who cheated to get to where he is.
No. They won't and they shouldn't! Why should they let him go? That would be encouraging other players to do what he did. He definitely a dishonest cheater, who could have told the truth in the first place.
Lance Armstrong should have told the truth to begin with. He thought winning was even more important than having true fans, not fans who think you are someone you are not. Sure, everyone makes mistakes and we DO forgive them, but the thing that we should not forgive him for is being untruthful and not admitting his mistakes. Somebody could have really worked to win Tour de France or other races, and he the only work he did was dirty work. He disappointed many fans, including me.

i believe armstrong did wrong but you have got to think about it from his view. he probably thought he had no chance in the tour de france after cancer and maybe he was trying to inspire other people with cancer. he did wrong but there may be 2 sides to this story

I think public will be forgive for him, because the Livestrong Foundation has done for every cancer person. Any one can make a mistake, not except with him. I very shock after hearing his admit using doping for a long time. His conscience will be ashamed and guilty by what he has done , so we do not need to put any pressures on him.
I don't think the public will forgive him. Lance has made such an image of himself as a moral hero that it is not acceptable that he is forgiven easily, if at all. For more than a decade he created an elaborate lie, while tugging on America's heart strings.
While I do think it's wrong to cheat in sports, one must pay notice to all the good that he has done for cancer awareness. He has done a great thing with his foundation despite what he has done on the track.
He didn't race on a track, he raced on a road.
I believe the public eventually forgive Armstrong. We are often quick to judge, yet before judging others, we should look at our own actions. It's not our place judge when we all lie and make mistakes. All we can do is hope he learned from those mistakes and that he betters himself from it.
The public should forgive Armstrong. He works for raising money for cancer. By the way, he already is banned from participating in cycle racing for a year. He wil have enough punishments soon. So, the public should forgive Armstrong.
I think that Armstrong should not be forgiven. It seemes unfair to other cyclists that Armstrong is forgiven just because he had had cancer. In front of justice, every one is the same, and I think the people's forgiveness will not help him learn his lesson.

I really respected this man. But, after all that's happened now...it's just a real shame. I thought he was a hero for over coming cancer and then winning all of these awards, but now I'm just disapointed. 🙁
It is really hard to judge that Armstrong can be forgiven by the public. It is because that he cheated in race but also he established his own charity to help people in need. Even though it is hard to decided, I choose not forgive him.

I think he used Performance Enhancing Drugs in the first place because he made winning the Tour De France look easy.
He didn't make the Tour look easy, if you watched the our you'd know that it isn't easy, even with drugs.

I am truly disappointed. I love biking and Lance seemed pretty cool. I hope that this is a lesson to other athletes never to dope. I saddens everyone and ruins your life.

I think nowadays a lot of professional athletes use performance-enhancing drugs, and to critique Lance Armstrong is no different than taking away a baseball players World Series title.

I don't think people should be mad at him. I think he's innocent. Sure, he had pleaded guilty, but after years of fighting, eventually you get tired of it, and you might as well just admit to something and hope you get off easier than you did when you were saying otherwise.

I think it's such a shame that students look up to these professional athletes, who in turn end up lying to the public. Armstrong was asked numerous times over the years, and he could have come clean then. But instead he continued to pretend that he won the races on his own accord. It's time that these men in power stop misusing it, and deliberately lying to the public who have supported them all these years. What we need are honest, morally responsible people to look up to, instead of overpaid, corrupt sports stars....
I think that Armstrong should not be forgive very easily because if you lie for ten years and win seven of the biggest bike races in the world in a row and lie about it than they should give him a good lesson.

I think that this is awful that he lied about this for about a decade. Children and some adults look up to him and he has let them down by doing this. He could have come clean in the beginning when they asked him. Now he has been banned from bicycling professionally forever.

I personally think that he should be forgiven just because he said he used drugs maybe he was using them for a different purpose like us we use things for different purposes. They will forgive him he just needs to lay low for a while because something new will happen to someone famous and make a big deal about it. I think it was kind of immature to cheat during the Tour De France, but it was really immature to not fess up right away. If he was mature, he would have owned up before he won his next title, or the title after that, etc. I'm not saying I would want to confess, because that means stripping of the titles, but I would want to actually earn my title, rather than having it practically placed in the palm of my hands. In my opinion, it's almost cowardly, and it's certainly unfair to the other athletes. I believe we should eventually forgive him, I mean, we all make mistakes, and being stripped of the titles, and being banned from cycling for life, is pretty harsh, and I think that's enough punishment.

What Armstrong did isn't necessarily new. Most likely there are hundreds or thousands of other cyclists using dope (not to mention other sports). We should think for a second. If you could win the Tour de France even once while using dope, I think that most people (if not all) would jump on that opportunity. We should cut him a little slack. We need to look at the good things he has done in his life, like Livestrong. He should be recognized for that. I think we should get over it. It happened and you can't change it.

i do think the public should forgive Armstrong, mostly because of all the money he has donated to cancer research charities. The thing that bothers me most is the fact that he lied so many times, denying that he had ever used performance enhancing drugs. The hype of his admittance is quite extensive, however it's a little disappointing to see so many people taking it the wrong way. While I understand he may have angered fans by lying to them for so long, he at least decided to finally let out the truth. We cannot say that he didn't know he'd get this type of reaction, it's like telling your parents you just broke one of their top-priority rules. You do this knowing that you won't get a positive reaction, however the reaction will be better with admittance rather than denial. This is the decision he made and while I'm sure he's content with his decision he shouldn't be getting pounded so hard. The guy had an organization dedicated to Cancer – one misdoing is not enough to clear a man of everything he's done right. I beleive Lance Armstrong should not be in trouble for using peds. He paid the price and got cancer and that's fair for anyone. I believe peds make sports intresting but I don't think should be allowed. If other players are mad you should of taken peds too.

I don't think the public will forgive Lance Armstrong. Not only did he cheat, he lied and bullied other teammates. He destroyed some of their careers. By his adament denials, he will be also be sued by his sponsors. I am horrified by what he has done, and don't think it's an excuse because "everyone else does it."

Lance Armstrong was Livestrong. He was the inspiration to it. We believed in him, his story, and how someone can overcome cancer, or any challenge, and achieve greatness. Now he admits to doping, taking the easy way out, cheating. How can we forgive him for that?

I think the public will just forget about this because something else will come up and everyone will forget about it. But, the public won't forgive him once they remember.

The drugs he took were most likely not "illegal". They were prohibited by the rules that govern bicycle racing.
I am not too sure how Lance Armstrong is any different than Bonds, Marion Jones, Ben Johnson, A-rod, Tyler Hamilton, Floyd Landis, ...all of them. They all deny, deny, deny. Then, when there is no other option, they tell the truth. The only reason we look at Lance Armstrong any differently is because he was on top for so long. But his path is no different than any other athlete that chooses to use PEDs.

There are always going to be those who refuse to forgive, and they have that right. Personally, I think we should do our best to allow Mr. Armstrong to earn our trust once again. Though I don't believe the public will ever fully forgive him for his actions, in some ways I feel empathetic for him. True he did lie and cheat, and that is a really bad thing, but we should focus less on what he did on the bike and more on what he did off it. i think Armstrong should be forgiven because everyone makes mistakes and its not really fair that he makes a mistake and is not forgiven and then another person makes a mistake and is forgiven.

Our country is based so much around sports its kind of hard not to expect people to cheat. When you make billions of dollars a year just off of one team then the bar is set high for athletes to achieve greatness. With Lance admitting the truth he's opening a door of ridicule.
