Keeping Kids Safer

In Tuesday's show, you hear President Obama ask whether Americans are doing enough to protect the nation's children from violence.  "If we're honest with ourselves, the answer's no," he says.

Do you have ideas on how to do this?  We'd like to incorporate your thoughts on what can be done in the U.S. to keep kids safer.

To be honest, America is doing nothing to keep our kids safer. We need to do something about it! It isnt right to keep let our children roam the streets without adult supervision

I agree with Courtney. America isn't doing much to keep kids safe. There aren't a lot of ways to keep kids safe. The media and their parents corrupt them and that's hard to avoid.

I also agree with Courtney. Our country is not doing anything to protect children. If we don't, more children will be killed. We must upgrade security everywhere so this will never happen again. We must protect children.

I agree Courtney. You should always have adult supervision and when you get old enough you should be able to walk the streets as long as you are safe.

Courtney, I totally agree. First of all, schools need WAY better alarm systems. Second of all, we need more help in the community to help stop these things.

I think if they had two school staff certified to carry a weapon at every school then not so many kids would have to die. The poor principle sacrificed her life to stop the shooter with no weapon of her own. She dies, but maybe if she to had a weapon she could have stopped him sooner and saved some of the children and herself. This happens at places where the gunmen know no one else is carrying a gun . So sad!

I think nobody in america should own a gun unless they are in the government enforcement and military.

That would cut into the Bill of Rights. Amendment 2 clearly states "The right to keep and bear arms will not be infringed."

You can't ban them because the Supreme Court has now ruled, twice, that you can't. You also can't ban them because there are hundreds of millions of guns in circulation in the United States–no one knows exactly how many, but we are either approaching, or well past, one gun per adult citizens. Other countries that banned guns started with a less absolutist attitude towards civil liberties, and also, a lot fewer guns.

Alcohol also has a purpose- intoxicate people to sub-optimal levels, even to the point of death. Alcohol is linked to 75,000 U.S. deaths every single year.

I think we tried to ban alcohol- can you tell me how well that worked out?

I think that making guns illegal would do no good. Think about all the illegal drugs that people still make, sell, and use. I think the only way to put an end to school violence is to put prayer back in schools. Really, how many school shootings happened before they took prayer out?

I think that mental people should not have access to any weapons, because all the shootings have mostly all been from people that had mental problems. They should not ban guns from the american citizens. We shouldn't have to give away all the weapons that we have because of crazy people, should we?

        December 18, 2012 at 7:13 pm |
      • Ben

Banning ALL guns would be un-constitutional. However, nobody in America needs a semi-automatic rifle. The United States government doesn't want to ban all guns; it just wants to ban automatic guns that have a certain sized magazine. These are the guns that contribute to most of the violence in our country.

        December 19, 2012 at 5:34 pm |
    • Nick

A change in gun laws in my opinion would not solve the problem. We need to focus on mental instabilities in children. That child that sits alone at the school lunch table. That child that gets bullied but gets no help from the school. The child that is anti social and wants to be alone. These children are living alone in their minds and there are no programs in place to offer them the support they need. This is the problem. Not the guns.

      December 18, 2012 at 4:10 am |
      • Claire

I completely agree with you Nick. Guns are not the issue and blaming an inanimate object is completely illogical. Saying that guns cause violence is like saying that cars cause drunk driving. We need to focus our efforts on the children in schools and on punishing bullies in schools. Bullying can cause people to develop some serious mental health issues that they cannot be treated for. Were you aware that children, even if they are completely psychotic, cannot be medicated and locked up to keep them from hurting themselves or others unless they actually hurt themselves or others? Think about that. Does it make sense that we cannot keep people with mental illness from hurting themselves before they do so?

Right now it is way too easy for a person to go to Walmart and buy a gun. There are not strong enough background checks currently that look into a person's medical as well as emotional history. I think they should improve gun safe security and use some newer technology like an eye scanner to be able to unlock it. Schools should also have metal detectors and backpack searches for concealed weapons.

      December 18, 2012 at 10:49 am |
      • Issac

Well I certainly wouldn't like them to check my everyday to school and take all metal off and walk through a metal detector every single day and plus I think that would be too expensive.

    • Megan

Haven't you ever heard of the phrase "You can't fight fire with fire?" If we let more guns be sold, even for protection, wouldn't that be reenforcing the problem itself? Putting more weapons into society does nothing but lead corruption into our lives and into our schools.

      December 18, 2012 at 4:36 pm |
      • Devon

Megan i know what you mean. But we need to realize that what i said about the better gun safe control and gun control in general might be a good idea to keep the students of both small and big towns safe. You can't fight fire with fire, but you can save students lives by having certified officials with guns in schools. Especially places that have lots of gang violence

What happend at the shooting was not right. Why would a person go in a school and go and take peoples lives. No one in Sandy Hook should of deserved that. When I was watching the sandy hook story with the presidant he said one off the kids said I know karate, i will lead that way. I will pray for every single kid and adult that is gone.

Usually if someone does something like that, they were either mentally ill, or they had issues that they wanted revenge on. I read that the guy was an honor student that had social issues. "Every villain has a reason for what they are doing." (something that a writing teacher told me one time).

There are probably around 8 million handguns made per year. I think that the U.S should limit the number of guns made in a year. Too many people have guns and use them for the wrong reason.

    December 17, 2012 at 5:32 pm |
    • Devon

Well think about the people that use guns for the right reasons. like people that hunt, police officers. all those people need guns, and limiting the guns might make that a problem.

The answer is no, because no matter what we do to protect innocent children, there are people like HIM, who destroy everything we hold dear. This has to stop, more and more shootings are happening every day. enough is enough.

I totally agree with Mr. President, we really aren't taking the right steps to protect the educated american children. I think our security system should tighten up, lessen the glass in large areas such as cafeterias and make sure that all doors are always locked, even the ones to the entrances. These steps aren't much but they are headed into the right direction , no one should have to fear going to school.

If you ask me, my answer would be no as well. We live in a country that has given us our certain unalienable rights, Life, Liberty, and The Pursuit of Happiness. One of those was taken away from 26 innocent people by a coward. We should be ashamed

I think we need more attention brought to mental health care to prevent things like this from happening. Just because someone has possibly a gun collection or owns a concealed weapon, doesn't mean they're going to shoot up a building. Average Joe doesn't become psycho murderer in the blink of an eye. There has to be warning signs and something wrong before he decides to do something like the Sandy incident.

In our school we have automatic locks on our doors, windows.etc but i think we should have even more than locks or evacuation plans because students should feel safe and know they will be fine in a case of emergency whenever it occurs because no one knows when it will happen it could be when we least expect it.

    December 17, 2012 at 6:06 pm |

we have drills at my middle school when we go in to lock down in case of an emergency within 5 miles and our principle gives a certain code that means we can get out. Texas is strict about all our drills.

I think there is only so much we can do to keep our children safe. Schools all have policies in place to make sure that their students are protected. I think the bigger issue is whether or not we are teaching kindness and coping skills to help prevent someone from believing that opening fire on innocent children is the correct way to deal with their inner demons. The President said it best when he said "We don't go wrong when we teach acts of kindness"

    December 17, 2012 at 6:07 pm |

In a world the way ours is today there is no sure way to keep children safe, anyone for that matter. As far as I'm concerned we do so many things to protect children, however that's only in some situations. In other situations it seems our country does nothing. In order to keep kids more safe our country needs to focus on those things that attention isn't brought to.

In our world we have many safe things we can do and many dangerous. I think we could have safer schools if we just try. We need to focus more on the good things that have happened but, we need to focus on the bad. We can improve our safety by having panic buttons in classrooms which would automatically call a local emergency number and get them to the place your at. If people took into consideration what goes on in the world it just might be a safer place to be.

I personally feel as though there is no way to keep children completely safe, however several things can be done to somewhat fix this problem. First is the reinforcement of lockdown drills inside of all schools. In my school, kids often talk, giggle, and play in very serious situations. They are not aware of what to do if a tragedy were to occur. If lockdown drills were more common and well known by students and teachers, there would be no confusion as to what would happen in an emergency situation. The second thing that could possibly be done is to make sure those students with mental illness or students that are prone to violence are taken care of and set on the right path by a special needs teacher, or even a guidance counselor. These students also need follow-up care throughout the rest of the lie of these troubled students. Lastly, schools need to be proactive on what is happening in the communities they are located in. Possible lives could be saved by all three of these suggestions. It is of the utmost importance we learn from what happened in the events friday and never let it happen again.

Unfortunately, are nations children aren't as safe as they should be. Gun related violence has got to stop. All schools should have a security system with cameras. This would prevent intruders from getting into the building.

Today there aren't many ways that will totally protect our children, because there is always the "what if" factor. But the most important would probably be education. by educating the children of today on what to do in a crisis they know what to do and how to do it. They have practiced it and they are prepared for the unexpected.

    December 17, 2012 at 7:19 pm |

I agree on what Pres. Obama is saying. I think EVERY school should have protection. Teachers should always remind kids about the dangers and schools should always have good security inside and outside of the schools. Parents should also tell their kids about the dangers to and find ways to avoid getting hurt in that situation at all cost.

We may wrack our minds for hours, days, or even years, but a plausible explanation for this massacare of so many small children will never arise. I believe that the school was doing their very best as a public place of learning to stay safe while providing students with a comfortable environment, and that an armed gunman with a mission could have gotten in anywhere. However, schools should have more security guards with better training, and more available defense resources for the trained security personelle.

If the United States can pay off it's debt and get the economy back to a surplus, in the future, it could buy new security equipment to protect the country's schools.

I think, the only reasonable solution, is to have stricter gun control. Not a single American needs an automatic weapon, unless government issued. From a farmer in Montana to a mom in Georgia, automatic weapons are not necessary, needed, or wanted in America. I think the President needs to take leadership and propose major legislation in order to keep Americans safer in the long run and prevent tragedies similar to this one occurring again.

  39. ubby

t was relly smart for the teacher to hide the kid in the cabinets. This could happen to any school in US.My suggestion is for students to take self defence classes for them to fend for themselves against people, supposingly the killer of 26 people.

  40. Evey

A way to protect the children in our nation is to maybe keep a eye on them and make sure they don't do anything they aren't supposed to.

    December 17, 2012 at 8:13 pm |
  41. Cole

Things we need to keep kids safer:
-Well trained security members equipped with basic self defense weapons, such as a tazer or at the most a handgun. At the very least schools should have lookouts that will call 911 before someone gets a chance to do something like this.
-School campuses should be better protected. Campuses could be surrounded by fences that can't be climbed as easily as chain link fences.

Things we need to change in terms of gun control:
-I don't know much about hunting, but I'm guessing you wouldn't need anything more than a crossbow for most game. If a crossbow isn't enough for larger animals, then perhaps a 1 shot weapon that will take down larger animals with one shot.
-People should be able to collect guns, but access to ammunition should be restricted.
-For people who just want to shoot a gun for fun, ammunition should be distributed to gun ranges for civilians to buy and shoot at the range.
-There should be security at gun ranges so nobody sneaks ammunition out of the range.
-small amounts of ammunition should be sold to people with a hunting license. There should be no exceptions.
-You shouldn't need more than a tazer or stun gun for self-defense, at most a handgun.
-Automatic weapons should be restricted from civilians. They have know purpose for self defense or for hunting.

I realize that the above ideas won't prevent everything. These are just small things that our government can take to keep our country and it's inhabitants safer.

They should definately pratice more often. They may want to carry a weapon with them in case the intruder gets to them and has a gun. It's upsetting how many kids died when their future had so many things waiting for them.

I think that we more less of windows like at schools and more locks on the doors same at home things that we could use to keep us children and adults safe.

  44. Jack

As long as there are guns, there are going to be people who use them for the wrong reason. If you ban guns the bad people will still get them illegally. I think the best course of action to take is to have a least two or more staff in a school with guns to protect themselves and the kids, if someone like the guy at sandy hook comes in. Or the schools could have a couple of cops there from when school starts, to when it gets out. Then not as many or maybe no people would die in a situation like that.

It's very hard to keep American children from violence completely. The practice way is building a safe place in each place where children usually come to, so that we can safe them as most as possible.

    December 17, 2012 at 8:56 pm |
  49. Ricky

The should be more safety rules at school like more security around the school like guards at every classroom.

    December 17, 2012 at 8:59 pm |

All americans that own guns should get a license for themselves.

    December 17, 2012 at 9:01 pm |
  51. Izabelle

Just think if you were in that situation. Your teacher tells you to go hide somewhere and your teacher gets killed trying to protect you. I think its the parents job taking their kids to school knowing they're safe

    December 17, 2012 at 9:11 pm |
  52. Cloe

I think that what happend was terrible. People should stop bullying others and this might not happen. But no, us Americans don't care and so we just keep hurting others recklessly. And for school saftey I think that schools should be all techy and advance on new lock systems. We will forget the day this happened on, but never the heros and little angles who perished on that day.

    December 17, 2012 at 9:19 pm |
  53. Chris

We should add security guards in the schools around us.

    December 17, 2012 at 9:21 pm |

I don't get why anyone with a certain target would even think about shooting down innocent little children

    December 17, 2012 at 9:34 pm |
  55. Miranda

Safety should be a large priority in our schools, but sometimes even security systems aren't enough. Sandy Hook elementary had a new security system..and that wasn't enough. I read a quote that said 'One attempted shoe bomb attack, and you have to take your shoes off at the airport. 31 school shootings and gun control hasn't changed." I agree, and I think gun control should be changed.

    December 17, 2012 at 9:42 pm |
  56. Keagan

Children are vulnerable when they aren't protected. We need ways to strengthen our protection of children throughout the United States. We, as the people, need to take higher security measures and find ways to protect the younger generations.

    December 17, 2012 at 9:42 pm |
  57. Grant

I think even if they still have security the people can still get in in any way like the ceiling of the school it's just that simple. They could still try to upgrade security but it just mainly depends on what the murder has and the way he is going to get in. I think the teachers should be armed so incase of a emergency but if they use it without a emergency they should loose it or get fired

    December 17, 2012 at 10:08 pm |
  58. John

I think the president should make stricter gun laws and make laws so that no one exept law enforsement can carry a gun around a school. They should also have locks on the doors of the schools and anyone coming in must be buzzed in so strangers would not be able to enter the school.

    December 17, 2012 at 10:12 pm |

It is such a tragedy of the loss of the young people. I will keep there familys in my prarers as the rest of the world does. I fell so bad that I can not be their with the faimlys. I think the U.S.A. will change the way schools work, and will make note what to do when these kind of things happen

    December 17, 2012 at 10:16 pm |
  60. Angel

We need to get tougher on our gun control laws otherwise it could turn from a small shooting, to full out civil war

    December 17, 2012 at 10:20 pm |
  61. Averi

I believe if if his mom had guns in the house and your son who lives in the house that is mentally ill you should have the guns locked up. I also think that you should have some extra security after all those killings across the states.

    December 17, 2012 at 10:20 pm |
  62. Hong

People tend to relieve their stress in a very explosive, impulsive and violent way, especially if it is accumulated over time. So, If you keep a dangerous weapon, sooner or later you will use it. That's why ban on the gun sale is definitely the first step. Of course, it is not the only way to kill people, but the large number of people have been killed by this weapon this year.

    December 17, 2012 at 10:21 pm |

The people need to come together otherwise it will be war between the ones who want guns and the ones who dont.

Maybe if every school would have a security that only lets teachers and student in the school . This would make the school be more safe. If the parents try to check out students that would have to empty everything in there pockets and show id.I am a 7th grade social studies teacher and I would do anything to protect my students .

we can help the kids in need to get them in foster care were they get fed every day and have fun like kids should use more advanced technologies to help kids that are disabled and cant do things correctly

  66. Kaitlyn

My school now locks up every door and gate. Unless you have a key you can't get in any of the buildings before or after school. If you visit school during the school day you can expect lots of police to be there. I at least saw three to four officers at my school on Monday!

    December 17, 2012 at 10:54 pm |
  67. Justin

This is a horrible thing. I mourn the children and staff who died in this tragedy and I feel for the kids who survived and lost their friends. I think we can prevent this by limiting sales on weapons: guns, bows and arrows, crossbows, even slingshots. Any sales of these weapons that are not sold to the government should be supervised by any means possible. And I think this should take place everywhere, not just Connecticut. Why focus on one place's safety when another person might be planning something like this somewhere else?

    December 17, 2012 at 11:03 pm |
    • Erica

Justin you have the same perspective as I Do I agree with every thing you said

      December 18, 2012 at 3:50 pm |
  68. Brielle

I think we can do lots of things. For one thing, no one ordinary citizen should have a gun. Only the military and police and protective services should. For another thing, every school across the nation should have drills so children know what to do in these cases. Everyone should have to take a course on defense in case of something like this were to happen to your school.

    December 17, 2012 at 11:03 pm |
  69. Ian

Taking away guns is not the answer. There is no true way to prevent a situation like this from happening. If a person is determined to cause an act of violence it is out of everyone else's control. Schools must prepare for the worst situation and limit the potential of a tragedy. The educators and administrators at Sandy Hook Elementary practiced this situation and because of this they were able to keep more kids safe then were in harm. Their acts were true acts of heroism. Limit access points for perpetrators and educate students on what actions need to take place in case the worse happens. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families who lost loved ones in this tragedy as well as the community of Newtown.

    December 17, 2012 at 11:48 pm |
  70. Anna

I think that most schools are doing the best that they can to keep students and teachers protected from harm. If kids take drills more seriously, they can be fully prepared to know exactly what to do in this kind of a situation.

    December 18, 2012 at 12:14 am |
  71. Jorge

Ban all kind of weapons. People don't need weapons in their houses. Security should be provided by the police, not by weapons. Weapons only cause deaths and tragedies like NewTown. We can't let die 12.000 people every year while 10.800.000 weapons are sold. In our country there are people who are becoming richer while we are weeping our deaths.

    December 18, 2012 at 1:28 am |
  72. Joshua

I think that having selected teachers carry weapons of their own would honestly be the best solution to stop violence. We should give the teachers what they need to prevent future tragedies and violence from occurring, because if they have a weapon, they can protect the kids instead of allowing what happened to happen again.

    December 18, 2012 at 1:43 am |
  73. Claire

Some ideas I have is that we really aren't doing enough to stop violence in our country. Since we haven't really done anything, the best we can do is to keep the children safe. I heard a rumor that one teacher locked all of her kids up in cupboards. But an even bigger issue is that we might not be teaching children that this violence stuff is when these criminals are at a young age. Some schools like mine to not have an intruder evacuation plan, so it would be kind of hard for the teachers to find a way out of the school safely. But what I truly think would help is if some people were, well, just smarter! This wouldn't have happened if the guy doing this didn't get so overcooked over a little disagreement! Our country just needs not to focus on things that do not matter but we need to worry about children's safety.

    December 18, 2012 at 7:05 am |
    • Julie

The thing is Claire what happened was reality. Yes, it would be lovely if people were smarter but we have to think about the whole world and all the people. The man had a disease that effected his thinking and there wasn't much we could do about it and he some how managed to get 7 fire-arms. It is tragic but some people snap at any age for any reason.

What happened Friday was a tragedy. I am not against having policemen in schools as an added security measure. Though I feel in order to keep a certain degree of freedom in our schools there comes risks.

I think they should make licenses for armed people. So if you go to by a gun you have to show the licenses to get a gun. Also it can tell if they have a criminal recard.

    December 18, 2012 at 8:31 am |
  78. Timmy

I think thats really dumb for a guy to come in and shoot his mom and all those kids I think that they should at least have a sensor that can tell if they were bringing a gun in or not for safety

there are many ways to help protect children and having police inforcement there on cite and not letting just anyone into the school would help and checking people to see if they have guns on them.

    December 18, 2012 at 8:38 am |
  83. Daniel

I think that we should make sure that people have a backround check to see if they have a mental disorder or some other disorder they cant get a gun and do somthing crazy

    December 18, 2012 at 8:39 am |
  84. trevor

I think that we should attend more lock-downs and be prepared when a deprestion happends again. We also should have a security nearby just to make sure. I hope we can stay safe!

    December 18, 2012 at 8:40 am |
    • Karyme

I think it's a great idea for more lock downs in schools so young children can be prepared and now what to do, and avoid getting hurt or shoot by someone. What happened was so tragic... my thoughts and prayers go out to the families who lost a loved one.

That if someone wants to buy a gun then you have to see if they have any criminal records. if they did the you could not seal a gun to them. I think we should have guards at every building so we are sure we can be safe at school or at home or some place else.

I believe that all teachers should be allowed to have tasers at school and other weapons to protect themselves like pepper spray.

    December 18, 2012 at 8:43 am |
  91. Sydney

I think that we should have security gaurds at each door with weapons, and have security cameras to see who comes in and out of the doors. Everytime somebody goes to buy a gun, they should check and see if they have any kind of criminal record. If they do have a criminal record, they shouldn't give them the gun. I also think, that we need to practice more drills and how to hide in common or un-common places if it happens to us.

    December 18, 2012 at 8:43 am |
  92. Raul

This shooting has affected many lives and the only way to keep kids alive. There could be extra protection around schools.

    December 18, 2012 at 8:44 am |
  93. Caleb

I think that schools need bulletproof windows so that a intruder could not bust through the glass. And police officers outside the school. They need emergency equipment and they need better locks on doors. And there doors need to have no glass and need to be more armored.

    December 18, 2012 at 8:45 am |
  94. Ben

It wasn't right. People need to be more concerned about gun laws, and did he really need assalt weapons at all? I think not only a state but the country needs to improve the gun laws. And like the people said in Tuesdays student news it shouldn't take as something like 27 deaths to change the law.

    December 18, 2012 at 8:46 am |
  95. Haley

well i think we havent done as much as we can do to keep kids safe but we need to do some more things to keep them safe like in every school have a police at every door that leads outside and do not let kids out of the teachers sight.

    December 18, 2012 at 8:47 am |
  96. Cole

Things we need to keep kids safer:
-Well trained security members equipped with basic self defense weapons, such as a tazer or at the most a handgun. At the very least schools should have lookouts that will call 911 before someone gets a chance to do something like this.
-School campuses should be better protected. Campuses could be surrounded by fences that can't be climbed as easily as chain link fences..

    December 18, 2012 at 8:48 am |
  97. Karley

I think they should ban guns with no use for anyone but police and military. If the shooters mom did have those guns then most likely there wouldn't have been a shooting. No one should be able to carry guns that cable of such damage.

    December 18, 2012 at 8:48 am |
    • Karyme

I kinda agree with you because, maybe the shooting the guy caused was influenced by the mother... but I still very sad for the families who lost a loved one.

i thank schools should hire security gaurds

i think to keep kids safe is to always have adults supervision no matter where you go like, playground, lunch etc! And i also think to have police or gards to stand in of the front of doors and lead the kids in and out school everyday! So i think we are trying as hard as we can so far we really need to try harder because of the shooting that just occurred!so try really hard everybody!!!!!!!!

    December 18, 2012 at 8:49 am |
  100. Ramsey

I think we need to do lots of things to help keep children, all people in general, safe. Not saying that we need to take away guns, but just enough to keep people safe.

    December 18, 2012 at 8:50 am |
  101. Joanna

I think it is very important to have police standing at every door and when sombody comes in they have to be cheked for guns and other weapons.this is envolved with the shooting in conneticut it killed alot of precious kids that did not know that that kind of thing would happen to them andit was so close to christmas so just be thinking about those kids and families. think about your actions.

    December 18, 2012 at 8:51 am |
  102. Nathan

We need to focus on the way kids act, like their body motions. The way the talk. I also think school should have higher security, or at least lock all doors during the day, until the end of school.

    December 18, 2012 at 8:56 am |
  103. kailey

I think that we should try harder to keep not only kids safe, but everyone. Violence is not only in schools and stores, it's on the streets and in houses too. We should'nt just hold children close, we should be able to protect them and yourself and not by hiding.

    December 18, 2012 at 8:59 am |

Were never going to be safe. You can take away our guns but it's going to be like drugs they will be sold ilegally. All the rednecks will have guns, you can't take the guns away from the rednecks and the southern states. If you ban guns you will probably see a break off from the southern states and the rednecks. If Texas decides to break of the southern states may go as well. You can't take away the guns in America. I say go rednecks.

AMEN!!! Im a country boi, I personally own 3 .22 caliber guns and several shoutguns and rifles. takin the guns away is like dealers selling drugs illegally. Roll tide roll. Sorry for Sandy hook parentfs, staff and students.

they shoud'nt allow any guns in the united states. Innocent kids are being killed because stupid people get guns and people are getting killed for no reason. The government needs to step up and do there job. Its not fair to the innocent kids and familys its not right that innocent kids are being killed by stupid people

    December 18, 2012 at 9:11 am |

hey! its not they should make guns illegal, but that we need gun control and better protection for kids

      December 19, 2012 at 12:52 pm |
  106. Cameron

My school now has a police officer standing by the door to the school 24/7 so no one but students can get inside without being stopped and questioned. I also think that school doors should have codes that only members of the school and students know to get inside. Like in some garages. If you type the correct code into the panel, the door would unlock, so any stranger would not be able to get in. Praying for those who lost their loved ones.

    December 18, 2012 at 9:14 am |

We also need to be more aware of mental health problems. We can't ignore them. Ignoring them will NOT make them go away.

There is no way that everyone everywhere can be completely safe. But to have a safer school enviroment, we could use gun sensors, and cameras around the entire campus.

Its hard to keep kids safe esspecially in school. Schools should lock more of their doors. Then less tradegies will happen

    December 18, 2012 at 9:25 am |
  112. jason

If I wanted to make the children safer in is country I would say "we should do home school instead of public school." If not ever school should have the new technology that will not allow anyone in with any type of identification. Also every teacher or adult in ever school should have a type of firearm (pistol, rifle, shotgun, etc).

    December 18, 2012 at 9:25 am |
  113. Steven

Whenever tragedies such as this shooting occur people cry out for safety. We then respond by taking away rights from good people who had nothing to do with the incident. The fact of the matter is this occurred in a gun-free zone, which are open invitations for mass killings. The answer should be less gun control, not more, because laws don't stop criminals from doing criminal acts; however, a gun will.

    December 18, 2012 at 9:25 am |

I think that one thing schools could do is to give each parents, children, and teachers a security badge so the can be the only people that can enter the school. Also they could have people who are hired to protect the people in the school like body guards. The best way to protect anybody, not just children, is to probably raise a generation that would have no motavation at to do these terrible things.

    December 18, 2012 at 9:27 am |

We can all make sure the school is safe by locking doors, having lock-down drills often, and make sure that all kids are quiet during serious times.

The first thing we should do is stop having nonstop coverage of the killing. Pole who commit these acts are looking for one thing: attention. By covering stories like this for weeks you are asking for more shootings to occur.

I believe to keep kids at schools safer is to not allow asult weapons unless it is under the use of military means.I would also say to keep doors at schools locked and protect kids any way a person can.

Nobody should be able to buy a gun without a background check, somebody should make sure there is no criminal record! Something that could have helped would be if security was better before the tragedy. The systems have gotten better because of the tragedy, this makes me sad that schools didn't realize children were in danger before the shooting.

    December 18, 2012 at 9:36 am |

I think the teachers should have a way to defend themselves and the children. When he came into the school they couldn't do anything about it. Better security would help as well.

    December 18, 2012 at 9:40 am |
  123. Tyler

What happened at the school was a terrible thing. I think that the teachers should be trained to handle situations like this, and have to a firearm at all times. If even just one teacher had a firearm, then less people would have died. gun control would not work. The shooter tried to buy a rifle but was turned down because of his mental instability, yet he just ended up stealing one from his mother.

    December 18, 2012 at 9:41 am |
  124. cynthia

Schools should have armed security guards , cameras inside and outside schools, as well as locked doors to enter school buildings and classrooms. People should have ID's to walk around school buildings. Teachers should have some training on what to do if this happens in their school. Make laws to keep people from getting guns so easily.

    December 18, 2012 at 9:50 am |
  128. Aranda

II believe that we should have more laws and to have strict rules at home.

    December 18, 2012 at 9:51 am |
    • Josh

Strict laws make things harder on us (the people) we need to defend ourselves at any cost. Police show up pretty much after the event has already happened. If anything, i would suggest to enforce people to carry guns in their homes, of course with the right permits and such, and just focus on keeping them locked up better.

I think that the only way to keep guns away from dangerous people is to not let them be sold to any one but in the military. He wouldn't have been able to kill that many people that quick with a different weapon.

Who could do such a thing to little kids. This has got to stop. We need to come together as a nation and end stuff like this. My heart goes out to all the families who were involved with this tragedy. Stay strong.

I think that the doors to the school during hours should be locked and the secretary has to ask the person why they are there. If the person has a gun the police have to be contacted ASAP! My sarrow goes to all who have lost loved ones. I hope this never happens again.

    December 18, 2012 at 9:55 am |
  132. Justin

There should be a police officer at schools to ensure safety. With out proper protection, attackers can break into a school quite easily, and that's when bad things happen.

    December 18, 2012 at 9:56 am |
    • Noemi

I agree with you Justin. There should be police officers at every school. The police officers can protect the staff and the students from a situation like this.

      December 18, 2012 at 3:56 pm |
  133. Billy

We should have better alarm system in our school and if people won't do that then we will have a another crisis like this one

    December 18, 2012 at 9:56 am |
  134. Jake

I think we should do more lock down drills to prepare for this if it dose happen again

    December 18, 2012 at 9:56 am |
  135. Olivia

Your school can tell the parents to have ID ready if they are picking kids up and ask the kids if they recognize the person. Have a person when you come into school to have purses backpacks and any other thing they come to school with. Parents should be looking for presensts for Christmas not caskets!

Our nation is not doing its job by keeping us safe because those 26 people who died during school......that's unbearable to even say, hear, watch! We need more protection, more lock down drills and need to also practice during passing time because I don't know what to do we are all in panic what if that was your kid....dead

    December 18, 2012 at 9:57 am |

There's really nothing we can do but stand together. I really don't know why someone would want to kill beautiful young children with so many dreams! Our nation has to stand together and stay strong.

America isn't cracking down on gun control because they still want to follow the second amendment, or the right to hold arms. However, things are much different than in 1787. We need to talk about controlling guns and enforcing strict laws so the only requirement to have possession of a gun, isn't just to be 18 or older.

I think that the office must have a weapon to protect themselves and the school. Or a security guard for the school. I would risk my life for those kids. Those children were all still baby's

    December 18, 2012 at 9:58 am |
  143. Maddie

I think that we need better security, because what we have now isn't safe enough. People basically could just walk through the door and start doing something bad like the Newtown shooting. Locking the doors, like big locks, or something better than we have now.

I think each school's class have to equip weapon for unpredictable situations. if there something weapon stand up to gunman, it maybe more less victims or no one hurt and killed from gunman. i recognize that it's quite difficult to propagate the weapon each school's class right now, but we have no choice keep our kids safe from harm.

    December 18, 2012 at 10:16 am |
  148. Angie

I think that we need to stop with the violent video games and movies, this is where the kids are learning this from! You see you're friend or relative talking or playing it and the thinks oh it's okay to mercilessly kill people on games and the next thing you know they have a mental illness and do crazy things that we think is totally wrong and it is. I think we should shield kids from the violence in our society, that everyone thinks is wrong but it's the same thing virtual, fake, or in real life.

    December 18, 2012 at 10:20 am |

Really it is really hard tp keep kids safe due to all of the dangers happening all around the world. I wish we could do something about this. I only hope that this world will become safer when it comes to shooting.

I think that all schools should have sercurity guards that have a weapon wether it's a taser or a pistol students should always be protected. Schools should also lock doors except the major entrances beacuse most criminals enter through the not so major entrances.

    December 18, 2012 at 10:26 am |
  155. Nicole

i beleive that we should have guns stored with guards and the office so if anyone comes in we are armed also we should have big closets that we can run in and hide

  156. Sue

Our TV, movies, and video games have lowered our values. We need to treat those with mental problems more effectively. We don't need to get rid of guns, we need to be a little more strict about background checks. Even if we fix all of this, bad things will still happen. But maybe we can decrease them.

I think we should make it a law to keep ALL doors locked when we are in and out of the house...things would be much safer that way...it could spark a light that would lead us out of the dark and into a better future...

    December 18, 2012 at 10:40 am |
    • Kevin

It's completely true, and I would appreciate it if you would show this on the show Tomorrow so that the whole world would know to do this...we keep our doors locked, but we don't always do it, which is what leads to murders and robberies, if we can keep our homes sealed, we can avoid all that, and keep our generation of children safe!

      December 18, 2012 at 11:05 am |
  159. Phoebe

There is no real way to keep everybody safe, but people can make a change. Guns aren't the cause of it–violent video games are. Everybody had guns 30 years ago, but nobody ever thought of killing each other. They used them for hunting and protecting themselves. Now, in present day, there are awful video games that kids play. They don't realize what a horrible thing they're doing when they actually commit murder because they have done it in a game and nothing bad happened.

I agree there are a lot of games out there that are influencing kids all over to be violent and even psycho paths can get ideas just like the shooting at the theater in Colorado, the shooting in the Aurora, Colorado mall, and now the shooting in sandy hook elementary!!!!!! WHATS WRONG WITH TODAY'S GENERATION???

I think the hooting was a TRAGEDY. To keep kids safer I think teachers should always lock the doors of their classrooms. This could also work at your house.... You could also maybe get thicker windows so a guy can't break in.

    Home School!
if you have an ample security system and the right know-how to teach your children your self, and the right books to copy off of, it could be just like a school in your own house.

To have the schools have more lock downs in the school hours. I think they could use a hand gun in the school , by that i mean in the principle's .THEY COULD have hid in a dark room.

I think that people shouldn't have the right to bear arms because our country has had so many problems with guns and now we have to add another terrible thing to the list. The only people that should have them are anyone who protects the country like police and people in the military. Also I don't think anyone should play violent video games because it can affect their brain. It can make people think that violence is okay.

I know that in some schools they have glass doors and you have to be buzzed in to enter, I think they should have these in all schools so there is less of a chance of someone getting in.

    December 18, 2012 at 11:27 am |
  168. Dante

I think that america is not doing enough because if we were, bad things like this would not happen. What we should do is lock the doors in the school at a specific time and oif the school cameras spot any suspicious movement, we will be ready. There could be only one unlocked door for students to get in.

    December 18, 2012 at 11:38 am |

This is so sad..... I think we should have more security in schools and doors that can lock. There should be a heavily secured room with a few guns in case of emergency. So if something ever happen we will not be defenseless. We can defend ourselves. There should be a self defense class in schools not, just in High Schools. but in Elementary and Middle schools. We need to come together as a country and protect our schools.

I BELIEVE THAT THE MONITORS SHOULD KEEP BETTER WATCH OF THE SCHOOL. LIKE A MONITOR OR TWO COULD BE WALKING AROUND THE SCHOOL KEEPING WATCH. OR A MONITOR COULD BE OUTSIDE THE SCHOOL KEEPING WATCH OF ALL THE ACTIVITY THAT IS GOING ON SO NO SCHOOL HAS TO SUFFER THIS TRAGEDY AGAIN.

  183. Lilybeth & Selena

Lilybeth; To keep our schools safer, i think keeping locks on our doors would be nice. And i also agree with the President, we really aren't taking the right steps to protect the educated american children. We need to take care of our school, & ourselves also.

Selena; To keep not only our school, but our society better, i think that we shouldnt be able to give just any person weapons. Guns, knives, etc. should only be given to the people who actually need it like cops, people that work. Some people buy guns to protect their families which is a good thing but people should at least have permission to have guns.

    December 18, 2012 at 11:41 am |

    December 18, 2012 at 11:44 am |

A change in gun laws in my opinion would not solve the problem. We need to focus on mental instabilities in children. That child that sits alone at the school lunch table. That child that gets bullied but gets no help from the school. The child that is anti social and wants to be alone. These children are living alone in their minds and there are no programs in place to offer them the support they need. This is the problem. Not the guns.

    December 18, 2012 at 11:45 am |
  188. Paola

we could put alarms on all the school doors and turn them on when the school bell rings and try to make every class as safe as possible by putting bars on all the windows and all the outside doors. we could also make all the windows darker so that you can't see inside the classroom.Lastly, we could get many more securities..

  189. Luisa

This tragedy has had a large impact on people all over the nation but especially for parents and teachers, parents worried about sending their kids to school, teachers risking their students’ lives. No parent and/or teacher should ever go through that pain. I personally think that we should enforce new laws for guns for the safety of our community.

I do think people should have the right to bear arms exept for autimatic weapons what kind of hunter needs a machine gun? In world war 1 aswell as other wars semi autimatic weapons increaces the number of casualties. Which means they are more dangerous for normal citizaians to have.

    December 18, 2012 at 11:46 am |
  191. Leah

This tragedy is well... a tragedy! Kids are to be protected at all time ! They shouldn't be allowed to wonder around on there own. I believe that people shouldnt use fire arms AT All.

    December 18, 2012 at 11:46 am |
  192. Alex

I cannot believe someone would do this, America is not doing enough to save children. We need to practice lock downs and fire drills more often to be prepared in a case like this.

    December 18, 2012 at 11:47 am |
  193. Alyson

I think we should have more protection at schools. We should also have back up plans for these kind of situations. Also, in the front office they should have a system to let people in the school.

I think that people shouldn't have the right to carry guns because you could be selling a weapon to a dangerous person. I think the should limit gun sales to civilians. They should at least background check the people before selling them weapons. If the have an issue of mental issues or substance abuse they should not have a gun sold to them. Those poor children lost their lives to a person who decided to make an awful decision. No one in their right mind could do that to innocent children

    December 18, 2012 at 11:51 am |
  196. Bryan

this is just too horrible to ignore, what i think that could really help to prevent things like this from happening again is to make tools that are meant to kill illegal; cops, detectives, soldiers etc. should have guns only when they are in duty, not out of work. why else would people need tools to kill out of work. this would also prevent people to not be afraid to go out to the world without high security.

    December 18, 2012 at 11:51 am |
  197. Amairany

To protect students they could have a better security system and not allow any person without them being recognized. We could also put bullet prof glass on the windows and should also have cameras on the outside of the schools to monitor enter the school what everyone brings into the school.

    December 18, 2012 at 11:54 am |

I think we could improve children's safety in public school if we had armed security guards at all of the schools and had teachers pack heat for protection. If Newtown would've had security and teachers with guns, the students would've been protected.

    December 18, 2012 at 11:57 am |
  200. Lexus

What we could do is have more security in our schools and have them check the person coming. Next, they should have more stricter background checks to purchase a fire arm.

We can take lessons from other facilities that host large numbers of people. There are policies in place and technology used to prevent armed people from entering. Several ideas are being utilized such as; metal detectors, bullet proof glass, or simply locked doors that can only be unlocked by authorized personnel. We are unsure if all violence can be prevented but items like thes sure can make it more difficult.

(KIDS) I think we as in kids should pay more attention and tell are pairents what is going on around us. We sould tell are pairents if we are feeling trubled with something the should they know about, so that that are pairents can hellpe us be safe and others can be safe too. (PAIRENTS) If your child seems to be trubled about something in your house or at school, it would being good to ask what may be bothering them. Also if your child tells you whats wrong with them and it seem to be going on and on. If so be sure to talk to your family members or the school to help your child there and at there school. (SOOO PLEASE BE AWAER AND SAFE WITH EACHOTHER AT HOME AND AT SCHOOL!!)

After devastating shooting that happened on friday schools should put arm gaurds near every door and if possible put metal detecors at the front door and put bulletproof glass. This would in my opinon is the best way to stop shootings at schools and stop devastating issuses like these.

I think that we should do a lot more than what we are doing! There have been many other shootings like this. Like that shooting in colorado at the theater. We definatly need to have more lock – downs in our schools in case this ever happens to us, which i hope it doesn't.

In order to keep our younger generation in a safer enviorment, our police needs to be more on it when it comes to schools. Every school should have a team of security guards alert and ready to go and at ever entrance the schools should have metal detectors. In the front of every school there should be a gate with police gaurding the gates like a military base and all students should have IDs

I think that Kids in America are not as safe as everyone thinks they are and obviously this situation has woke everyone up.Some people just dont understand that when you let your kid roam free in the grocery store you are putting there life in danger i mean you never know if your child is going to get kidnapped , shot , or worse. All i am trying to say is if you let your kid down out of the grocery cart seat keep a close eye on them. Someone could pop up and take them without you even knowing. Americans need to use there instincts and help protect kids from people that could harm them.

This was a terrible event i think america needs to take charge and do something in school security this was a event that the USA should learn from this.

They should have security alarms in every school

I think to keep kids and anyone safe for that matter we need to get better protection. There are many things we could do to protect our schools and things like that. We could be more careful about who we give guns to and start considering things such as criminal and health records. If someone has a criminal record then I don't think they should be able to go and buy a gun however many people do use guns to kill animals and sell them to make money. The same thing goes for health and mental issues if you have a mental illness then you never know when they are going to break down. We need to help protect everyone especially kids at school.

  214. Jerimiah

I think that we need to restrict our gun use to a certain extent, I mean at least have a permit to use one and have better types of security at our schools, I'm not sayin' that we need security guards or anything but we need some kind of alarm or something.

kids are the most important people in the school because we need kids to learn and we also need to pray that God would protect us from things like this

i think that they should have some kind of school polices so if any one try breaking in and hurting the children they will fight for them and we are not doing a good job on murder just look at Detroit.

the idea of having guards is kind of far ,but we should have more security at school or more drills to feel like we can handle a problem such as a shooting.

Well, as long as we don't turn to gun control. An armed society is a polite society. The shooter had an assult rifle, but he never even used it! So, why is Congress trying to take assult rifles away? Because, they've been waiting for an oppurtunity like this.

I think that automatic weapons should only be used by police and the military, but guns over all should not be banded. Schools should add some safety precautions like outdoor cameras.

I agree with Obama on this one, i think that the nation is not doing enough to keep the kids safe. An option or solution that i think would be proficient for the nation is that maybe the schools can have a way better security and also can have a door opener so he can see who comes in the building and lets the school know when something seems strange. those are some solutions i think would work!

  221. cyilesha

what i think that should happen is that their should be at least three police cars going around every school , also the principile should have a camera through all of the hallway and i mean all of them and he should have his eyes on that computer, then there should be button under the table so that when ever he/she can press it if there's anything weird then the police will be there in a hurry.

As a teacher, I feel that we need to make sure our students know the procedures. Ensuring that when lock down or other drills are being conducted, they are treated as if it a real threat. I do my best to remind my students that they are safe and I will do whatever I have to so that they feel safe. We need to be honest with them, they are human beings. I do not think we need to give them all the details, but tell them that yes, bad things happen and there are very bad people in this world, but there is also good. We are safe and as long as we do our best to watch out for one another, we can and will remain safe. Schools do need to review their policies and the procedures they have in place. Parent and community input should be considered as well as local law enforcement.

The government can only regulate our lives so much. With the act of taking away gun rights, we attempt to make freedom safer. Yet being free is being free, and what happened in Connecticut entails what freedom is. It is letting human nature work, uncensored. Of course limiting gun rights won't create a utopian society like in Brave New World, but it will bring us one step closer to complete limitation of rights. The only way to make a safer America is to cut back on some of the values that began this country. Its ultimate goal, freedom.

Sadly, what happened in Newtown was a tragedy. Its really sad to know that people can buy guns very easily in lots of places. I hope we can try to increase security in our schools to help keep kids safer.

  227. Bret

As a teacher, I think that guns aren't the entire problem. As we know guns can be used for good and for protection. I think that the main issue is dealing with mental illnesses properly and finding ways to keep schools safe. I think that it is hard to have a perfect plan in place in schools when things like this happen. One thing that my students and I discussed would be for every classroom to have a bomb shelter in place that houses the students and can be locked from the inside. If not in every classroom then maybe a few in each school. This would allow a majority or possibly even all of the students to be out of harms way in most emergencies. Of course, this all costs money, but what are we willing to pay for the safety of our children and educators.

I think we should make it a law to keep ALL doors locked when we are in and out of the house...things would be much safer that way...it could spark a light that would lead us out of the dark and into a better future...

I personaly think that we need to bring up the fact that mental heath has a role to play in that shooting, he was obviously was mentaly unstable. however that does not justify killing others and I know how it feels when someone hurts or even kills some one you care about. My sister has bipoler and at one point she was trying to kill her self so I know how it feels.

I think that schools should have a better security system in their front door so that if anybody that has anything bad they wont be able to go inside the school. Also they shouldnt be selling guns to people that look suspicius because oviously they are up to no good.

This has been a big tragedy, to what I have heard it is extremely sad. I believe no child should have their lives taken away for no significant reason. They woke up on Dec, 14, 2012 some ready to learn others happy for Christmas some even for new years. They had a long life ahead of them. I believe that every child deserves a good child hood. No child should be scarred for life just because he/ she saw his/ her friend die .God bless sandy hook!!

I think that people aren't do anything to keeping kids safe. People shouldn't be buying guns without having your ID checked. Its very sad to see these kids die this way i mean they were innocent and we should make sure that nothing like this happens again. People shouldn't have access to the school without having one of those visitors thing and they should be checked before they enter the school. We should also have more securities around the schools.

The only real way to stop violence like this is to return to classic moral values. School shootings and similar atrocities didn't start until moral relativism took hold. If we still had Judeo-Christian values taught to kids as part of school, no one would attack schools unless they were escapees from prisons and insane asylums.

gun control is the first thing to protect our children, in the video it said that assault weapons can only available to military and police, that is a stupid thing to do. reason is, because what if there is a attack of some kind and you have no access to any weapons. what then.

in my opinion i think no one should be able to use a gun unless they are over 21 years old just like drinking and if they do use and purchase a gun they should first be tested to see if they are crazy or mental. i also think that it was wrong if that guy to kill those children and adults because its so close to Christmas and every one was looking forward to getting presents and that day they woke up looking forward to school not to a day of death.

The Connecticut shooting was a terrible and cruel tragedy for America. Teacher's and children have died because of a man that had gotten angry and took it out on those teachers and kids in the elementary school in Connecticut. lots of people are very sad and furious at the man that did this. People say that they want to get him back and take all their frustration out on him but deep inside they are are just sad and not mad at all. So i thank those people who feel the same way as i do even if i wasn't in the same state nor town.

I feel very sad that this happened, no kids or parent should ever go through any of this. nobody should ever say i was sitting next to my friend and he or she was shot. I am very sad theses innocent children and adults died for no apparent reason. All of these kids, teachers, and parents were getting ready for Christmas and they didn't even get past that, especially the kids were probably writing their Christmas letters to Santa because were ready for him to come and give them presents.

In this country of such freedom does not give us the right to take advantage of it such as these Massacre shootings:
Cleveland School massacre, Columbine high school massacre, Aurora theater shooting, Northern illnois University Massacre, etc. In such depression, we need to take courage and get back up and max out our secruity in our schools to achieve greater success to make sure this won't happen again

    December 18, 2012 at 1:44 pm |
  260. Mariah

Honestly, in my opinion changes in gun law are not the problem, also, they need to take a good look at the child's behavior and look at if he/she has any mental problems. Like any suspicious behavior like sitting alone, not socializing, and seems to be isolated. I don't think that they should have used pictures of the shooter and use his name because all that shows is more glory and more people will remember him as a terrible person and they'll keep talking about him which is exactly what he obviously wants. Which is to be RECOGNIZED. Yes, i think it was very wrong and sad of this to happen and i know this won't be the last time it happens either but more and more people are going to talk about it and the shooter which gives him more power and shows other people like him that if they did something horrible like this then they would finally be recognized even if its for something bad. The shooter before the tragedy happened showed signs of craziness and mental illnesses, therefore SOMEONE should of said something and this relates to the shooting of Gabrielle Gifford's because the shooter of that tragedy was showing multiple signs of mental illness and he did something extremely awful. What i'm saying is take a good look at the childs behavior and do something about it , because as you can see the child or the person needs support, attention and help because who knows, it can lead to something really bad in the future. Exactly how the shooters mind went crazy and caused the happening of what happened to the sandy hook tragedy. Guns again are not the problem and i think everyone who has proof of using a gun can have one, because there are still people who use them for hunting and self defense just in case. Keeping U.S kids safer, i think we should take a good look at the child's personality and ask more questions or get help if needed. Not to get rid of guns and make them vanish because that's one thing that WILL NOT stop the problem.

I think we should be safer by taking gun use away from those people who have been locked up for murder and other gun use crimes. We should get more police officers to stand guard at every school entrance and exits. So, who's with me? Are you with me, world?

    December 18, 2012 at 1:48 pm |

Homeschooling. As I am homeschooled myself, ever since about 3 years ago, in my opinion, you learn, and have a better chance to learn, while being protected in the safety of your own home. The parent or guardian teaching you, helps you to stay at your own pace, while in Public School, the teacher cannot just focus on you.
Not only free lunches 😉 but no bullying, which is a big thing in the world today.

Automatic weapons should be banned. The military uses it to kill terrorists and insurgents. Did this guy really look at those children and see them as terrorists? thats just wrong.

I think we should invent some sort of detector for schools that would detect weapons like guns. This would be a good way to prevent something like the shooting that previously happened and will not only keep the kids safer but the adults on the inside. This could also be aplied to other places as well like stores.

    December 18, 2012 at 1:54 pm |
  268. Bailey

I think all the schools in the U.S. should have a security system. In my old school we had a security system where a visitor had to sign in at the office (which is the only room they could get into from the front door) and then the lady at the office had to "buzz" them in. All the doors leading into the school from the outside needed a current teacher badge for that school so that teachers could get in from outside play time.

    December 18, 2012 at 1:54 pm |
  269. Brendon

I think that there should only be weapons for military and police. Also, homes and schools could have more protection and security. Maybe, there could be more police stations that are closer to neighborhoods and schools.

  270. OWEN

To keep kids safer we need to take a serious look at the gun control laws in this country. While the right to bear arms is a right of being a citizen there is absolutely no need to have access to semi-automatic weapons unless you're in the military or a member of the police force. We should take a look at the events of the past year and use that knowledge to prevent other tragedies like this from happening again.

    December 18, 2012 at 1:57 pm |
  272. Caitlin

I think that the U.S should definitely crack down on who has guns. In my opinion I think only police on duty and people in the in the military should have them. there shouldn't be assault rifles or any other kinds of guns in anyones ones home.

I give out all my prayers to those families that lost an angel. I will give all I can to help. I would say that the little students that died that day will be loved and missed. I may not know them but they were so young and innocent. I don`t think that we are a safe country, and I don`t think that we should have that much of a right to bear guns in our house without a legal adult in the house. I also think that we as a nation should have a law that all schools should have an asault weapon of somekind in the office of the princibal. That`s how I think we could keep our schools safer from tragedys like the in sandy hook elementary. I know not everyone will agree with that, but so what, I have the freedom of speech.

Guns are no different than a pair of scissors. Guns are tools. Yes I understand that this person was mentally unstable and made a terrible decision but I don't think you would have a different response if this man killed these people with a pair of scissors or a pencile. A gun cannot jump up and shoot someone by itself, it is the person who pulls the trigger whether for good or bad.

I Am Tired Of Stressing This. Schools are SUPPOSTED to be a special place. But, yet Young Boys and Girls are being hurt/killed at School. This is Crazy, What has this world come to. And My generation is really screwed up. I'm only 14 years old. What about my kids, this kind of stuff makes me not want to bring Children in the World. Why? Because Crazy/Mental People Like Adam Lanza Are out there waiting for the perfect moment to attack

I think that although this event was beyond horrible, as all school shootings have been, we need to stand strong against the agenda of so many of our political leaders including the President when it comes to their views on gun control. There is no new gun law that would have stopped this person from doing what he did. The weapons he used were stolen showing that if he or anyone else wanted to commit such a horrible act they would do so any way they could no matter what the laws were. This means that we need to trust our school police and law abiding private citizens to own and carry guns in order to keep themselves and the people around them safe. Especially in schools and places where children reside there need to be good people armed and ready to protect those around them. If we allow our polictical leaders to disarm all Americans there will be absolutely no way for us to protect ourselves and our children and the people who wish to do harm will still do harm.

Exactly! Laws won't stop anyone intending to kill people. They'll just grab a knife or bomb instead of a gun and still manage to harm many others. Yes, school shootings or any other shootings are horrible, but why does everyone think gun laws will make them go away?

I think we should make people come in through the office and have metal detectors around the doors. The person in the office should have an emergency button that they can push if they feel uncomfortable with someone, then the button contacts the police instantly. The kids in Newtown was very sickening to know about even though I'm not even close to there, we need security that will stop that from happening again.

    December 18, 2012 at 2:15 pm |

I totally agree with what you are saying! That is what they should do from now on!

      December 18, 2012 at 2:57 pm |
    • Trey

I think that is a good idea just because then they won't be suspected and the person with the gun wouldn't suspect the person in the front office pressing the button. It is true that the attack was far away from some of us but it doesn't mean there will only be attacks in that area. Like the shooting in Colorado. There was 2 more attacks than in sandy hook elementary but we should always keep our guard when there is a lock-down or someone walking down the street with a gun or weapon.

      December 18, 2012 at 4:04 pm |
  287. Ryan

I think the the state or city should post a state ranger or a police officer at every school with a weapon so if a deranged person comes in with a firearm the guard can defend the students and teachers and hold the person until the police get there

    December 18, 2012 at 2:27 pm |

During school hours in order to get in the building student and staff need to swipe their ID's in order to get in and visitors that are coming in to pick up a student should provide a signature in order to take them with , this way there will not be strangers in the building.

In my opinion, I do not agree that making schools into a prison is the correct way to go. I feel, if you were to train and arm specific administrators that the school board can trust, or put an armed officer on duty in the schools, then incidents like this would be further apart. If the government were to restrict firearms or ammunition, it would then leave law abiding citizens completely defenseless and allow criminals free reign over anything they want. It is impossible to stop incidents like this from happening, but getting rid of weapons is not the option.

    December 18, 2012 at 2:45 pm |
  291. Isabelle

I think that we should get all the mean awful people out of this world. That would help to keep children and everyone safe but, there is no way that will ever happen. There is never going to be a way to make sure every single child is safe, If they make gun laws than people will turn to knifes, arrows and any other type of a weapon.

    December 18, 2012 at 2:45 pm |
  292. Charlee

No. We do not keep children safe enough and do not do all we can do. We can do so much more to keep children safe, better protection for schools and stuff would probably protect the children. Keeping them from violence is impossible but keeping them from doing violent thing is possible.

    December 18, 2012 at 2:47 pm |
  293. Emma

I think that IF people can help, they should. But some people might not be able to afford any kind of child care that will be preformed. Some people might already give there child the life of a queen/king. Some people might abuse there child/children. There are many ways to cut it. I believe anything someone can do to make there child/children happier would be great. Another thing is the gun laws. I don't think that if there is a "no more guns" law, the criminals won't obey that. They will go to a Black Market and buy them.

I think to keep kids safer there should be school guard cops outside the schools, and loud alarms so people can do lock downs faster!

Maybe checking every person that walks through the doors or home schooling. It will be a lot easier and safer for the children at Elementary, Middle, and High School.

I think the United States should ban citizens from using guns. I think only police officers and military servers can have guns. I think that people do these kind of horrible murders to be on the front page of the newspaper.

    December 18, 2012 at 3:14 pm |
  298. Joshua, Morgan, Deysi, Jaila, Rochelle, Kiara, and Bryan

There should be security cameras and more security guards around schools.
Each household should have ADT home security.
The U.S. should stop selling guns, and only the police/security/military should have them.
There should be metal detectors at schools.
Teachers should have bulletproof vests just in case there is a lockdown.
Kids' shirts should have a GPS tracker.
There should be secret hiding spots for safety in schools.
Violent video games should be stopped.

I think the president needs to install security systems that uses a code thAT ONLY TEACHERS AND STudents know so that any one that deosn't know the code will be cept away from se teachers and the kids, i also think that each one of those love ones should get a hug for those who have died in this horrible tragedy.

    December 18, 2012 at 3:16 pm |
  300. Mia

i think that all doors on the outside should be locked and the person in the office should push a button to let people in and there should be medal detectors everywhere and the children should have a special hideout to go to if something happens and once the door doesnt open again until a code is put in by a teacher

    December 18, 2012 at 3:17 pm |
  301. Zach

I think this event is just terrible, I don't think this should have happened. But this can only make us stronger. But to prevent this we should NOT sell guns to anyone except police, people in the army, and other people in the armed forces.

I think we should have more secruity. In our school, our doors are locked. We only have one door that is not locked. It defintly keeps our school safe.

I might not understand whats going on for the familys but i can tell you Me and my friends emma ashley and makenzie are very emotional about the subject and feel very sad But we were also thinking a great way to keep kids safe Is more protection for them as in my elementry school we had a lock scan system yeah i get that its alot of money and were in dept but if we do this than there are more kid to grow up get jobs and money so it is worth it also mabey an metal detector
im very sorry for the losses and we should do what we can to make this better SHINE A LIGHT ON SANDY

I think that we need to step up our gun safety laws and regulations to keep our children safe. I think teacher training on gun safety and situational events would be good too. Schools need better security systems.

I think that we could make the schools safer if we had more security officers/cops around. And maybe bullet proof glass so that it cannot be broken into.

    December 18, 2012 at 3:33 pm |
  314. Nani

I think that schools should have bullet proof windows and doors. Schools hsould have more security like more police at the school. All school doors should be locked and you have to show ID to get in.

    December 18, 2012 at 3:34 pm |
  315. Katie

I think teachers should be equipped with pepper spray and tazors to protect themselves and their students.

    December 18, 2012 at 3:35 pm |

While I don't think that teachers should have guns, we must improve the safety of our schools to ensure that both our students and teachers are safe. We cannot afford a repeat of what happened in Connecticut.

    December 18, 2012 at 3:35 pm |
  317. Ben

I think we need to increase the security for our schools. I think schools should be equipped with metal detectors near all entrances and the campus should have more officers present.

    December 18, 2012 at 3:36 pm |

I think that the gun laws should be stricter. I feel teachers should be more prepared and equipped with a weapon.

    December 18, 2012 at 3:37 pm |
  319. Josh

I think there should be tests people have to take to be able to get a gun. I also think there should be laws that only let farmers and hunters use guns

    December 18, 2012 at 3:38 pm |
  320. Bob

It is true that the chidren aren't safe, but changing gun laws won't help. Where I come from nearly every household has at least one. It is a very sad and scary event. How are we supposed to keep children from dying with the issues like abortion? Losing those innocent children creates heart break, and our schools need to keep them safer. The truth is these things happen.

    December 18, 2012 at 3:39 pm |
  321. Nicole

it is a shame to what this country has come to. Kids used to be able to go outside and fear for their lives. What is really scary is that it sounds like Sandy hook had a similar security system to my school. I think that schools should have better procedures or at least fix the flaws and have more and better shelter places in case something does happen. Also in order to be let into the building during hours you need to have proof that you are a parent, student or staff.

    December 18, 2012 at 3:43 pm |
  322. Jordan

This is insane. If this ever happens again the world would end. These things need to stop and to do that people shouldn't be allowed on campus unless they have been inspected or have been cleared by the principal. Who would want to kill a hole bunch of seven and six year olds. That or schools need to have bouncers.

    December 18, 2012 at 3:45 pm |
  323. Maxwell

Someone said that there should be guards enforcing schools, and I agree. But it would also be wise to stop a person from doing something before it starts. The Bill of Rights enforces our right to privacy, but that's what's keeping us from preventing things in advance. We can do whatever we want behind closed doors and no one can stop us. I think that it's time to look to George Orwell and a certain novel... we should place security cameras and microphones in our houses so that anything bad can be prevented in advance. Wake up America, it's 1984... and Big Brother's not watching us enough.

    December 18, 2012 at 3:46 pm |
  324. Noemi

This is just sad. My prayers go to the families that lost their children in this tragedy. I hope that something like this won't happen again. There should be polices in all schools to protect the staff and the students from a situation like this.

    December 18, 2012 at 3:46 pm |
  325. Benny

I think that from now on, there should be sensors put on guns which can track it's location.

    December 18, 2012 at 3:48 pm |
  326. D'Angelo

I think America should just put security guards around every school to prevent shooting or at least police officers.

    December 18, 2012 at 3:48 pm |
  327. Trey

I think that parents are doing everything they can to keep their kids safe and some parents sometimes get killed just to save their children. I think that our parents are very good workers and their first thing to do is to feed their kids and give them water at least. In parents minds they think that children need to have breakfast lunch or diner first than they do because they care about us and want us to live a better life than the parents did.

    December 18, 2012 at 3:59 pm |
  328. Jacob

I think we should just love our kids and always, Always keep drugs out of reach. If something that happened in Newton we should have security with a pistol at all schools 2 or 3 per group and 10 to 15 groups so they can keep our schools safe. If it isn't at school the parents should not leave their kids some where.

    December 18, 2012 at 4:02 pm |
  329. Tiffany

I really think this whole crisis is just terrible and it shouldn't have happened in the first place. But it wasn't because of any drugs or the gunman was a true murderer, he had a mental illness, as heard on news. I heard on the radio a man saying he should have went to church, but the problem is, he can't reach out to god with his personal problems, it was something that couldnt have gone away. I personally think all schools should have an adamatic locking system on the doors and windows shouldn't be made of glass, it should be unbrakable and their should be cameras o the school's campus so they atleast have a few seconds more to prepare for this. I also think they shoould have something the murderers can just walk by, containing students and he or she will never know its there.

    December 18, 2012 at 4:03 pm |
  330. Lourdes

Keeping kids safe is going to take a lot of work. we need to put bullet proof windows, security systems, and many more to keep these kids in the world much safer and actually alive

    December 18, 2012 at 4:04 pm |
  331. Summer

In my opinion, multiple things have to be done in order to make sure children are positively safe.

    December 18, 2012 at 4:04 pm |
  332. Josh

I think the school should have extra guards and keep a button that calls the police

    December 18, 2012 at 4:05 pm |
  333. Gemma

Even though this even was absolutely terrible, something we can do to stop it would be only making gun sales available for officers and officials. Making schools even safer and having more security and bullet proofing windows and being able to lock doors when bells ring.

    December 18, 2012 at 4:05 pm |
  334. Victoria

We can keep kids safe if we had classrooms that we just a little safer and we should also have more security in the classrooms because i think that nobody should every go through this again.

    December 18, 2012 at 4:05 pm |
  335. Astrid

I think schools need bulletproof windows and thicker walls. A secret compartment so if there is an emergency the kids will get in with a bathroom and food and water.

    December 18, 2012 at 4:06 pm |
  336. Karely

I believe that what we should do about keeping kids safer is well start off by adding cameras to the school and by adding bulletproof windows, doors, walls, etc. It would really help in case of an emergency. It will also help to have cameras in case if something like what happened in Newtown and we'll be able to see what actually occurred.

    December 18, 2012 at 4:06 pm |
  337. Reuben

This really was a sickening article, and it infuriated me beyond belief. There are too many things happening to random people and now they're targeting kids? ridiculous. I think it'd be a good idea to employ monitors (no, not the computer screens...) and make sure they're armed, because this happening again is plausible.

    December 18, 2012 at 4:08 pm |
  338. Mia

I think we should spend more money on school security. First we should change the type of glass on the windows to something more durable and bulletproof. They should also renew the security cameras. They should set up a special emergency phone that directly calls 911 in all classrooms. To prevent any incident from happening again they should have monthly lock down drills. The principle's should call an assemble and talk to the students.

    December 18, 2012 at 4:08 pm |
  339. Priscila

I feel that they should have security in every door of school, with bullet proof windows and vest. They should have a secret hideaway in every classroom to keep them safe. Each school needs to have security cameras and in the front office have every visitor be inspected before entering. That will keep children safe in school.

    December 18, 2012 at 4:09 pm |
  340. Corran

I think that America should of abolished guns a long time ago, after the recent massacres like the batman and Connecticut, America should of noticed by now having guns legal is a bad idea.

    December 18, 2012 at 4:11 pm |
  341. Dylan

A good way to keep students safe is to have all of the windows to be bullet proof and also for every single entrance and exit to have a security system and also for the doors of the classroom to be as far away away from the students desks and tables.

    December 18, 2012 at 4:13 pm |
  342. Mariel

I think schools should have a security system or metal detectors at every door to a classroom, or at least bullet proof window. Or maybe every time someone checks into the school, they would need to have a background check.

    December 18, 2012 at 4:14 pm |
  343. Josiah

Even though banning guns and weapons would seem like the best thing to do it is not the answer. People could still get guns by blackmailing. If we wanted to ban guns we would need to have the government keep guns out of reach and work in between everything.

    December 18, 2012 at 4:15 pm |
  344. Evelyn

I Think There Should Be Bullet Proof Windows & Steel Doors For Every School. As The Bible Says If You Bring Harm To A Child Or Force A Child To Sin, You'll Just As Soon Have A Millstone Tied To Your Neck And Be Throne Into The Ocean.

    December 18, 2012 at 4:15 pm |
  345. Manuel

To keep this from happening again we could have people that check visitors if they have any weapons and if things get really bad, we should have a button or alarm that sends a message to the police that their is an emergency and that you have to have a card to open the doors of classrooms.

    December 18, 2012 at 4:18 pm |
  346. Mason

I think schools should practice with more drills. Rifles should be illegal except for the military, I understand having a handgun for protection but a rifle is uncalled for. Schools should have bullet proof windows and there should be some kind of instant messaging to the police.

    December 18, 2012 at 4:18 pm |
  347. Melody

The first day that I herd of this tragedy was a horrible moment because then all of a sudden I just wanted to cry because it was really sad and I think that schools should have better protection because no one ever wants this to happen again. Like for our school and my little sisters school people could just walk right in and do the same I think it is time that all schools will do better in everyone’s safety. I think that out of all of the shooting this is the worst one of all because it was just little kids going through so much and didn’t know anything about what was going on. It must have been so frightening for the little kids watching their classmates and teachers die right in front of them. Because this could of happened to any other school.

    December 18, 2012 at 4:18 pm |
  348. Irvin

i think we just need to have to know the community better and well that will help keep kids safer. in my opinion, that way you know what kind of people live in your community.

    December 18, 2012 at 4:18 pm |
  349. Gamaliel

I think it we should keep this from happening this. We should not allow people to have guns except for military use. We should also make school protection better for preventing this to happen.

    December 18, 2012 at 4:19 pm |
  350. Samantha

I think to keep kids safe is if someone walks into the room with a gun, the kids should turn their desks over as a shield and the teacher should pepper spray them in the eyes and get the gun away from them.

    December 18, 2012 at 4:26 pm |
  351. Emma

I do not think there should be any kind of guns like the ones the children at Sandy Hook were shot with except in the military.

  352. Megan

People blamed God for the events that happened in Newtown, but maybe it wasn't God, maybe it was the lack of God in our lives. Maybe if we implemented God, or religion more in our daily lives, things like this could be prevented.
I don't think more enforcement will save us I think a change in heart and mind will save us, or at least protect us.

    December 18, 2012 at 4:30 pm |
  353. carter

I say NO ASSULT RIFLES!!! Assult rifles shouldn't be allowed they should be illegal! people say that it is in the second artical in the constitution We have the right to bear arms and I say we should have the right to bear pistols. And only small ones at that and that we should have bullet proof glass on all of the windows at school and steel doors on all the doors to the outside. Cody the one who is right next to me who is also adding on to this page believes that there is going to be a war and believes that Assult rifles should be legal.

    December 18, 2012 at 4:37 pm |
  354. Tristan

I think schools should improve the locks on doors and get bulletproof glass for windows. Yes, this would cost a lot of money, but it would save lots of lives. I also think most guns should be illegal unless it is for military and police, FBI or CIA use. If we do this, lots of people might be mad, but not as many as would be happy.

    December 18, 2012 at 4:38 pm |
  355. Terra

We really need to take something from this. At schools fire and tornadoes drills are done constantly but a lockdown drill has been done once this semester at my school. Students need more practice because these things, as we learner from Sandy Hook, and students and facility need to be prepared. Also people being just buzzed into the school just because they have heard their names, the only reason an adult should be allowed in the school is to pick up or drop off a kid if a student forgot their homework that's to bad because then the adult has complete access to the school.

    December 18, 2012 at 4:38 pm |
  356. Cody

Madi, I agree wit your statement, but we also have to worry about funding issues, and I also see things about no guns or no assault rifles. We have the right to bear arms, it says so right in the Constitution and if they start collecting arms, a nationwide civil war may start. It also will affect the economy. The gun industry provides so many jobs to so many people. Think about it, If we lay off so many people, a lot of them can manage their own and might go bankrupt and might become homeless. So, moving on to school security. I think we should have a regulation about having either wood or metal doors, so they cant break through. I also think there should be one security guard in every school in America, because it will ensure safety and it will provide more jobs for the economy. I also think there should be a relief program that will support the families of the loved ones that have lost their lives just for no reason. It will support the family with some money and a caring helper that they can call over any time. Like I said we should have the right to bear arms even if we are going through a crisis.

When I first heard about this I couldn't believe it was happening, watching it on the news and reading about it days later ripped my heart into a million pieces.
It is a horrible tragedy that shook America, and the world to the core.
This is why I agree with our President, we are not doing enough to protect the children or anyone else for that matter.
I think what we need to focus on is not only our gun laws, but the mental states of people all over the country. I understand that everyone has the right to bear arms and I mean no disrespect to anyone who believes in that law, but after what happened to those 26 innocent people, those little kids, that just doesn't work anymore.
This is a new era from back when everything was established and we need to treat it that way.

i think that the kids are safe enough because people have enough protection in this world like police, also the kids who died i fill bad because they had there hole lifes ahead of them. last i wonder what they would o done to that kid if he didn't take his life also.

Since what has happened has effected the president, he might think about helping schools out more. So if he does that then I would think that many different kids all over our nation would feel and be much safer while at school. But it all depends on how the schools use it. I hope they use it for protection and other things that will help kids out.

I agree with Kyra. We are given rights so why act silly? Why push them to the limits and go beyond them? I do think that America could do better but for humans the sky is the limit. What happened in Connecticut can happen anywhere. It wasn't a matter of security, it's a matter of control over citizens. America could do better but for right now we are doing okay.

I belive that taking the guns away will not solve anything, but i do belive that we still should have laws against fully automatic machine guns (AR-15's). Perhaps we should install metal detectors and bullet proof locks on our doors.

What happened was so awful. In my opinion I think that the only people to have guns should be police, soldiers, and hunters. These people should have a license to get a gun though. There are too many irresponsible people who have guns and use them for the wrong reasons. That's how people get killed or hurt. I also think that if people have a mental disorder where it could lead to them harming someone, they should get attention from doctors or therapists so that it does't lead to harm or even death.

I think we need to beef up security systems in schools. Every school HAS to have some sort of security system to keep all kids safe from people like this horrid person. This person killed 26 people, devastating their families. My condolences go to every person who is affected by this. I mean, it's like no place is safe anymore. So i think that we need to join together, as a nation, to take on a great cause, and keep our country SAFE.

I say that schools should make every adult and child have a backround check before entering a school to make sure they can trust them to enter. It may be hard but the school can even make sure that the person states their buisness and beings there at the school and make sure that they don't have a weapon with them when entering the school. As what happened here in Conneticut.... R.I.P. for those souls lost and heart broken parents.

Security would be the first step. Either on or off duty police. If that is not an option for some schools, try training parents to work as security. Atleast that would provide additional set of eyes from the outside of the school.

Actually, If you've heard what Dick's Sporting Goods has done, (banned stores temporaliary from selling sporting rifles), I think they should do that everywhere! You don't use them to hunt and they are not the only gun that can be used for protecting your home. What may be a enjoyment could also be a hazard that is not needed.

The rifle and gun laws and waiting time is perfectly fine. These weapons were issued to the mother and they should have been secured. My child goes to a school that has security in place but needs to be improved for our kids safety. Front double doors, bullet proof, cameras, metal detectors, and at least one guard. Why does courts and military bases have this but our children and teachers don't. Why can our president and judges be safe and not our children. Criminals will always get guns and the government and law enforcement will be out manned against them. If the military trust me with a fully automatics assault weapon to protect the president then I'm going to not let my rights to have a weapon be threaten. The government wants to increase jobs, veterans, are trained and civilians can be trained to protect our school children and teachers.

This could have been prevented if we had some type of security in the school more so than just cameras. If schools had metal detectors then the gun would have been found but then what the police won't get there in time and if there is a school cop then he could have been killed. I'm not saying give teachers guns but how about more school police and better protection for all public place not just schools but movie theaters and restaurants too.

I think that, like in my school, we should always lock the doors to the outside and have cameras in the hallway. We should also lock the doors to the classroom and have bullet-proof glass to all the windows. I think that kids shouldnt have to feel unsafe when their going to school. What happened was a tragety and now we have to be prepared for anything. This could have happened anywhere at any time. Nobody knew it was going to happen but now that it has everyone is just now rushing to safety. I think schools should have been already prepared for something like this to happen. Kids are not the problem but when there are at lockdowns, kids need to take them seriously.

I think we are not doing the best to keep children save. The question now is what are we going to do to stop violence around America not only for the children but for all the citizens. Just taking guns away won't completely stop the violence around America. We need to teach America why it's great to be a part of this country. We have many rights including freedom. Why do we need to harm those who have done nothing but good. America is the only country with many weapons. Maybe this country should only be allowed to have certain guns, for instance, hunting guns and gun that only shoot one bullet then you would have to reload it. We should even have a limit on how many bullets certain people can have. Most shootings that happen are from people probably having trouble in life or a disorder that makes them think different from others. Still certain people should have gun like congress, president, and people who are or have served in the army system. I understand that we do need self defense but guns like the assault riffle and other automatic guns, should not be allowed in the states. This will somewhat keep us safe but these killers can kill with so many other things. But it can make a small difference and even putting metal detectors in schools and other places can stop violence. At least we will be making a difference. But will America ever feel safe?

I think that only the military and police officials should own a gun, because what Adam Lanza did, was technically never stated was against the law (taking his moms gun and using it) What happened to Newtown is really sad, and I think the government should change laws on gun control, because seriously, schools are supposed to be the safest places in community and kids like me shouldn't have to worry about going to school and getting shot!!!

Similar thing happened in Korea a while ago, the only difference is that the crazy maniac used shovel instead of gun. The school's security was high, with two of the police officers and one school patrol guarding the school entrance. But he just got past them, and struck the kids with the shovel. Changing the gun laws? Taking guns from the citizens? that would only encourage the lunatic to repeat the same. What you really need to do is keeping the children's safeness with increased number of armed guards from the government, and emergency bell that goes off instantly when the unauthorized person enters the school property. Plus, though it may sound very hard to do, it is important that we prevent the future-murders before they could do anything. If they were given more care and more love, they won't even think about doing crazy things. Finally, the parents should tell their kids what to do when something dangerous happens, as well as the teachers.

I think only people like the cops, military, army, and security should be able to have guns. I think it's dumb to give a gun to a person and not know who she or he is and not know if they are a killer or a hunter. I also think that schools should have two guns and security and have doors that have a camera and only open when you press a button which would be located in a office. There are more shootings now than how much there were back then and there is supposed to be much less we are not doing a lot to protect our people. I agree with Obama.

Keeping kids safer is important, but I am concerned about how the public schools could afford brand new technology such as metal detectors. The fact that these things even happen is mind blowing, but there are things that must be taken care of (such as increasing public education budget) before we can even get close to acquiring new security technology for the schools across the U.S.

To make children safer there should be a manditory class in school teaching children how to defend them selves against preditors. Then the parents should go out ad get there children some pepper spray. As added defence anyone that comes in must go through a metal detecter. Schools should also put metal bars on the outside of there window so that no intruder can get in or out of the school. Then add bullet proof windows so that the person can not kill a child just by shooting there windows. "Is this all nessasary?" you may ask, well I say yes it adds and added protection for the child not just in school but outside of school property to. These are just the basics of what we could do to protect the children of our nation.

I sad about this and scare for places like big and tiny cites. One way to prevent this hipping again is to tarn staff and helpers like PALS for gun and safety for students like us. Also telling us to look for someone whiteout knowing who they are and visual seeing like a badge for telling the parent or rerouteing the person for lock down to tack place.

I though about this and I think this is the best thing to do. I think all elementry schools should have one basement in every classroom and in this basement there should be a telephone to communicate with the police and the other teachers. So if something ever happens like the horrible and sad incident in connecticut, the teachers can immediately evacuate the children into the basement real quick and communicate with cops and other teachers as well. I gurantee you that this would save alot of children and teachers. Practicing the evacuation procedure can lead to success. Students will all be in the basement at least in 5 minutes or less depending on how much the school will be training the children. Please support my idea I appreciated.

I don't believe restricting Americans right to own or bear arms is the answer. But I strongly do believe that that the vetting process for owning and getting concealed weapons permits should and has to be stronger and definitively more stringent.., ie;Any psychological impairments, prior arrests, such as violence, any sort of aggression etc...You LOST YOUR RIGHT...GOT IT??? We definitively NEED Police Officers and/or trained professionals in every single school in the Nation. Immediate Lockdowns upon school starting and some sort of ID required for children (maybe to wear around thier neck) teachers as well should have one. Teachers could lock thier doors. We need laws that upon commiting any sort of felony crime these [criminals] are completely stripped of thier rights to bear or own ANY weapons including knives etc...
We have to quit mommy coddling these sick and disturbed individuals. They seem to have more rights than we do.
My heart is truly broken for these babies and care giver and thier grieving and broken relatives...My prayers and Love go out to each and every one of you...

School should be a safehaven- I can't believe there are people who would even think of barging in and attacking children. It's unacceptable. But even so, we have a right to bear arms. You can't take that away from Americans. And if they did, it's not going to change anything. What are criminals best at? BEING CRIMINALS. They will find a way, and every American will be left helpless just like those poor children were.

What has happened has happened. Now it is time to do all in our power to protect the rest of the children of this country. We need to make a change, whatever it may be. Having to buzz into the office or go through something like a metal detector before entering the building would be a good approach, but whatever it may be, something needs to happen so another tragedy like this will never happen again.

Having a gun as a defense is an excuse. The only protection it provides is from gun-wielders themselves. As Atticus Finch says, "Havin‘ a gun around’s an invitation to somebody to shoot you.” It's saddening to see that while guns are so easy to get, mental healthcare is so hard to find. It should be the other way around.

I say we need to be much stricter with guns in general. Though we can't ban them altogether due to the second amendment, we can at least just be plainly stricter on it. We've had too many shootings in the past such as NYC (by the Empire State Building), Colorado( the movie theatre), etc. We can't just grieve, we must also act upon the situation.

We are not doing very good to keep children safe. This needs to change not only for the children but the citizens of America too. Limiting gun wise is not a huge difference but it is one. Hunting guns and guns that only shoot one bullet should one be carried by a citizen. Guns like the assault riffle should not be given to just any citizen. They should only be giving to congress members, the president, and people who have or are serving our country. These people can be trust with a gun and will not harm the citizens of the US. But only getting rid of guns will not stop the violence in America. We as citizens need to come together to help one another to learn and teach that there is no need for violence when we live in this wonderful country. We have rights and we have freedom. Why ruin this? All because of violence. How are we gonna keep children and everyone else safe if all we know is violence? We need to stop the violence right away. Putting cops in school is not a solution either. We have no idea if this cop is a real cop unless he shows he true identity. And we could put metal detectors up in schools and other places. Us as individuals need to teach one another to stop violence. These can make a small difference in which violence can stop. But will America ever feel safe?

That moment was sad and there's many ways we can change. In order for us to protect our children. There would be teachers carrying some guns. But not the whole staff. Also watching out for kids who get bullied or sit alone at lunch. We don't want another crazy person to kill children so thats why we check the kids at a young age to see if they're mentally stable.

In my government class we were thinking about what ideas could help in a crisis like the one in Newtown. Well, we decided that we need to somehow make test to some people that might have mental issues. And somehow identify them before any harm can accur. Also, it would be good if some teachers could get some gun training at least 15 from a school and be prepare BUT they need to have the gun in a safe place, and lock. (of course not a huge gun but a small one). And to do not only a mental test to a person who is buying a gun but also the ones who live in the house and might have access to it.

This made me so sad that little kids died this HAS HAS HAS to be prevented i mean these kids didn't even get to live there life. I think that the problem is with the amount of violence that kids are exposed to. Almost all of the popular video games are extremely violent, also violence is constantly in the news. We are being raised in a society where murder is common, and is brought into our homes through our T.V.s.This change cannot come through law, but through our homes and our hearts.

I think that if shootings are still happening then we're not doing enough. I think schools should have a system that has a metal detector on the doorway. Then you need to give your full name so we can look up their ID and crimanal record. then replace the windows with bulletproof windows. I think we should do all we can to not have shootings happen again. The kids in Newtown must have been very scared and we need to do all we can to prevent that.

Thre's only so much we can do. I think it's just because some people have big problems at or close to home. A lot of people conclude that it's how much violence is in video games. Just because the person liked violent video games doesn't mean that's why did what he did. I play video games that are on the violent side of things, but I know the difference between right and wrong.

Complete gun control or prohibition is not the answer, but there should definitely be more regulation on purchasing any type of weapon. It's not always guns that are the problem, and if a person is desperate or crazy enough, they'll grab anything that will do harm to others and go on a rampage. People also need to understand anything they say or do to hurt someone else could have a very negative impact on all of society just by the reaction of that one person. It's not always the weapon that's the problem; it's the person and his or her intentions.

This question kept running through my head: Why did that man have a gun in the first place? Guns were only meant to be for police and military. If "random" people get their shooting license, they will eventually get their own guns. More incidents like this happen everyday because of guns. In my opinion, the only "random" people I would allow to have guns are expert hunters, but it is still a instigator for a dangerous future. Schools are meant for learning, not worrying. One of those kids killed at an elementary school could have been our future president. We also need to respect each individual kid. There are still those kids who feel unsafe at school, even if this incident never even happened. We should be strict about bullying, because it can damage a child's mind just as much as knowing there are people who could come to your school and shoot someone. I have never felt safe at school, but the shooting scares me just as much.

I can understand owning a gun, but an assault rifle? To start keeping kids safe in schools, we have to look at what is inflicting the harm.

Well I can tell you this much, taking away gun rights won't solve anything. a murderer will murder. Though I do believe a great way to reduce these risks, is to keep at least one officer in the school, just like most high schools. A police officer is one of the fastest ways to get back up, and is already armed and has been trained to handle situations to his best abilities. Also, the kids can build a bond with these officers and help kids feel safer at their school. Another idea would be to have an emergency button under the front counter in the office, so that it summons help just like a fire alarm.

parents can volunteer to vigil the main entrance school doors. Two parents at a time, we obviusly cannot afford to put security at our schools because we are allready spending that money protecting prison inmates.
There is no way in the world you can walk into a prison with a weapon, but you can run into any school with all the weapons and ammo you'd like. keeping them foks safe in prison, way more important than keeping our children safe.

Parents need to pay closer attention to their children. For instance, it will benefit parents to spend at least one hour a day talking with their children about current issues. Also, parents need to model good morals. I realize that these suggestions are challenging to carry out...but we need to pay closer attention to our children. Simply put, we need to act like we are interested in them enough to install good characteristics.

I think that there needs to be more mental health screenings. Like before you can buy a gun of any kind you must have a mental health screening, and if anyone living in your household has any sort of mental health issues you shouldn't be able to have a gun.

To keep kids safer there should be stronger laws that limit the sales of assault rifles. High powered military assault rifles should not be in possession of civilians.

    December 19, 2012 at 8:29 am |
  433. Ryan

I don't think stronger gun laws are going to stop this. A person that's willing to do that won't let a gun law stop them. We need better security in the schools that might include personal that are experienced as well as metal detectors at the doors with someone to check the stuff to make sure nothing like this happens. If they can't get in with the guns, then it won't happen.

We need to look at the mental stability of people, not just take away guns from everybody but the military, Notice how people who are usually doing the shooting, have something mentally wrong with them. If they could be kept off the streets, imagine how many lives would be saved.

I think that guns should be issued by government officials only and that this would assure that students were not in the threat of guns held by civilians. Schools should have high security, yes, but not so far that they are designed like prisons. Students should feel safe, but not institutionalized and I feel that having large fences and metal detectors would be too far.

I think that America should take better steps to protecting people. There needs to be harsher laws on getting guns for people. I think that there should be almost an interview to get a gun. Talk to a person and they ask you questions on why you need the gun and what are you going to use it for. There is a lot more things that could be done to protect the people of the United States but this is just my idea. Thanks for reading!

I believe that in order to ensure the safety of students at school, we should have more security. Parents should call before picking students up and check in and out. Maybe have more of a control on who comes in and who goes out of the school. I do not think more people need guns, yet we need some professionals to have them in case of an emergency.

    December 19, 2012 at 8:33 am |
  440. MacKenzie

I feel the that eliminating guns in America is unrealistic. Americans have always relied on guns since the beginning of the country, but some are using them for the wrong reasons. Many have mentioned better gun control, but have no solutions as to how that can happen. More school resource officers in schools I feel could be beneficial to the safety of the kids, but focusing on the mental health of children can help too. Since previous gun shootings have happened, most are because of the instability of the person/people who acted out on their thoughts and beliefs. By focusing on the mentality of younger children, we can hopefully cut how often these tragedies happen.

    December 19, 2012 at 8:34 am |
  441. Christine

I think more attention needs to be brought to those with any type of mental illness when they're younger for future generations, to hopefully avoid these tragedies to happen again. Also, if school administrators organize lockdown and evacuation drills in schools more, it could be beneficial and help to keep students and staff safer.

Every student should feel safe in their school. I feel as though the schools should have bulletproof glass, metal detectors, locked door policies, etc. Students should be able to go to school without having the constant worry that their could be death around them at any moment.

I'm all for teachers having guns but I can understand why people would be skeptical. I'm also sure that 90% of teachers in school don't want to have a gun and im also sure that 90% teachers don't even have any sort of experience with guns. I feel that if a teacher has a gun in a classroom, it's more than likely that there would be an accident eventually. Or somehow a student was to get a hold of that gun. Theres so many problems with the ideas of a teacher having a gun. I personally think that schools should have more resource officers. Large schools with 1,000+ students should have probably 2-3 resource officers and schools with less than that could probably have only 1-2.

    December 19, 2012 at 9:48 am |
  444. Macy

I think that it is extremely tough for America to keep its kids safe because we live in such corrupt world. That being said I think there are some things that can be done. I think armed resource officers placed inside the schools could help and perhaps even metal detectors. I also think that less entrances to the school would be a major help. I really don't think this is a gun law issue, especially in this case. He got the gun from him mother's house. I think no matter what the bad guy/girl will get the gun, if he/she is a criminal then they're not even going to obey the law. I do think that maybe looking out more for mental health could help.

I think you can do what ever you can to protect your kids and others. But it will never stop. People will always find a way to hurt other people. It will happen. And thats whats wrong about society today. You can do what ever you want to make kids safer and to protect them. But its not a guarente that the kids will be safe,. but you can try. This world is just a mess. and it can never be fixed. And thats the sad part about life. RIP Sandy Hook victims. You will be never forgotten and always loved!

  446. Devin

After what happened we should really consider a new way of defense in schools. But should we really have to worry about this? Probably not, Guns are not the problem its the person using the gun. No type of gun control will stop someone from getting the gun, if they are willing to kill people then I'm sure they are willing to break the law and steal a gun. Resource officers at schools are good, but one cop can't be in every part of the school at one time. From what I gather most people who are going to do something in a school to harm people in it are not gonna walk through the front door and get a pass at the office. Make schools safe spending money is better then loosing lives right?

    December 19, 2012 at 9:51 am |
  447. Erin

It is sad what happened and we need to change. We should allow teachers to protect everyone, we need to have no more guns or anything weponized that could be hidden when entering a school.

    December 19, 2012 at 9:56 am |
  448. Jacob

I think that guns should be kept in the office under lock and key incase of an emergency. I think there should be two keys required so not just anybody can get in. I think that we should have security systems in schools especialy if we cant get guards. My school has no security system and is very unsafe in my opinion.

    December 19, 2012 at 9:59 am |
  449. Emmitt

If you were a 5-6 year old, wouldn't all these metal detectors and fortifications being put into your school start to terrify you? The whole idea of safety is to make these kids know that they are safe and these obvious precautions will just make them more scared of what COULD happen. Look at the white house. On the outside there is almost no indication of the immense security, though the White House is one of the most secure buildings in our country. If security is our new biggest obligation then it should be so, that resources are always present but not in broad daylight, and when they are needed just a moments notice is all that is necessary. Despite the broad possibilities of safety, I feel as if the subtle approach is best and it doesn't invoke fright towards the children.

I think that the schools need more protections like more guards in hogh school, guards in other schools like middleschool, and a better sercurity system. if they do that then the schools and be protected from a random thing from happening

I think that most of the time with these shootings it's the person not the gun. If people are so worried about guns then we should do what we did with concealed weaponry where you have to get a license to carry one. And you would get that license by going through a series of tests to see if you are mentally "stable" and if you would use the weapon in the right way.

    December 19, 2012 at 1:02 pm |

I think banning guns is dumb the killings start from mental sicknesses so just have people go though a exam to get assault rifles.

Guns are a threat I believe, no matter who has them, so putting them in the teachers hands might not be safe, and a fence would make it hard for kids to get out, maybe it does come down to teaching kids self defense.

I believe that we need to focus more on the mental instabilities of the people in America. By doing this we could help prevent more situations such as these. We could try to help people talk through their thoughts and let them know we can help. Another thing is that i believe that we need to have better gun control. I think people currently have to have gun license but it is not really helping because people have still managed to get their hands on one and hurt people with them. If this means to only allow people of security or police to have them, then we need to take this step. This could help to save one more life.

I I think that President Obama should make guns illegal in the United States, because theres really not many good reasons of having a gun.And it came result in something terrible like what happened in Newtown,Conneticut.

I think teachers should be able to have a gun. This I think will protect us, and keep us out of harm. This should never, ever happen again! It was a terrible day, lets all never make it happen again, somehow, someway.

    December 19, 2012 at 8:14 pm |
  472. Alyssa

While most think that President Obama should make firearms illegal is the U.S, the law would easily catch the eye of the Supreme Court. It is one of the five personal freedoms in the Bill of Rights that we have the right to bear arms, and it would be unconstitutional.

    December 19, 2012 at 8:19 pm |
  473. Libby

I do not believe that making guns illegal would truly solve the problem. It's not the guns fault that it kills..... It's the person. I believe that the only real answer would be to crack down on school security. Security cameras and having to check in everyone who comes in could prevent this from happening again.

If the government wants to protect kids from violence then they should keep a close watch on the parenting act all over the U.S. Is the government doing enough to protect kids from violence? No they are absolutely not doing half as much as they need to be doing. So I suggest they get on a child protection act where kids have adults actually correcting them when they see wrongdoing. I think I've made my point.

    December 19, 2012 at 9:20 pm |
  477. Lily

Obviously we are not doing enough. Although, gun control will not help anything. Criminals don't follow laws, so it wouldn't make any difference. If a person breaks into my house, I would like to have the comfort that my father has a gun and he could protect my family and I. The top two things we really need are better metal care and our teachers (at least the principal) should have concealed weapons permits. The shooter would be dropped the second he breaks in with a gun. So, I believe that president Obama should not outlaw guns and should be promoting mental heath care in the U.S.

    December 19, 2012 at 9:24 pm |

I think that america is trying, but failing. We need to step up gun regulations on citizens that have mental disabilities that could affect the public. I am not trying to be hurtful, but thi is america's best short at avoiding school murder.

We are sorry for the significant losses in your community. Hearing of this incident for the first time brought about feelings of anger, sadness, fear and helplessness. The children that were lost that day were too young to have their lives senselessly taken from them. We hope that the families and community are able to recover and be comforted by one another. We offer our condolences and love and will keep you in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

I think they should put metal detectors and some staff should be allowed to carry weapons.

they should practice on what will they do if somthing like that happens and they should have some one that all ways looking who is coming in

I think guns should be legal in some states like Alaska because there are alot of bears. But in some states they should not be legal teacher should be prepared with an escape drill or be armed with a can of pepper spray.

there could be a cop for every classroom

I think that is way to much to have cops in ever classroom.

I think guns should be legal because if some one goes to a forest they have to protect themselves.

i think we shoukd have more securitity and have more information in who goes in and out of the school that way we know whos inside the buuliding at all times. I think it will protect our schools and make it more safe for everyone.

I think we can keep kids safer by more drills and to guard every exit.

I think we be able to keep kids safer at school by having an officer patrol the school to help ease the kids so they can focus on school instead of another person coming in to harm them again.

    December 20, 2012 at 11:25 am |
  520. Maria

I think that all schools should get a security system.

    December 20, 2012 at 11:25 am |
  521. Kaitlyn

I think one way to keep kids safer is to have stronger security systems that would have some kind of weapon sensor so that kids could not get hurt.

    December 20, 2012 at 11:25 am |
  522. Ryland

I think metal detectors through doors or some security would limit all weapons entering the building and prevent another tragedy...

I think that guns should be legal but only hunting guns or bows not the assault rifles that the man had

    December 20, 2012 at 11:26 am |
  524. Addison

I think we should ban guns. People should only be able to use guns on hunting grounds. Also, we all know it is impossible to completely take away guns. People still get drugs when they are illegal.

    December 20, 2012 at 11:26 am |
  525. Lexi

I think you should only use guns if your hunting or you are a cop so people should rent them if they are gonna go huntingBt you shouldn't be aloud to own one for no reason

    December 20, 2012 at 11:26 am |
  526. Alyssa

I think that schools should have better security systems. Like something they have to be identified first to get into the school. It was a tragedy what happened and I think if we do this it could make not only the students, but also the teachers, staff and even parents in the school much safer(:

Schools should have security Guards at the front door or main doors of the school and the guards should check all visitors before they enter the building

    December 20, 2012 at 11:26 am |
  529. William

I think that we should have security, more in bigger schools, but limit they're usabitly with lethal weapons. Teachers should have pepper spray in they're desk or with them

I don't understand why you have to have a gun license but you can go to like gander mountain or even Walmart and buy a gun without one.

    December 20, 2012 at 11:27 am |
  533. Mackenzie

I think we should be able to bear arms but not semi automatic weapons. Why would a hunter or a normal citizains should have a machine gun! As we learned about World War One and two machine guns increased the number or casualties . So having machine guns would increase the number of deaths it would be dangerous

    December 20, 2012 at 11:28 am |

My opinion is that school just can't become safer otherwise school will feel like a prison

    December 20, 2012 at 11:29 am |
  535. Nick

I think that we should have some volunteer cops to patrol the school grounds so nothing like this ever happens again. Also you can't take the right to bare arms away because some people use them for self defense

    December 20, 2012 at 11:29 am |
  536. Jaelene

I think we need to have better gun control so that not everyone can go to a gun place and just buy a gun. I know the gun the guy who shot up the school with is sold out almost everywhere. Also that in Connecticut the people passed a law that people could bring a gun into high and elementary schools. That is just not right. Why do people need a gun in a school? Why?

Instead of banning guns or having metal detectors ( at a public school) we could have teachers carry pepper spray or have school's security system begin earlier.

Well what happened in Newtown was the sadest thing I have ever experienced sense 9/11. I think we should not ban guns but change the ammunition. You have to remember a person that knows how to use a gun safly and a property is good. Someone that miss uses guns is what unfortunately happened in Newtown.

    December 20, 2012 at 11:32 am |
  542. Brooklyn

I think guns should have a stricter law. Even if we change the law bad people will still "steal guns". Our class rooms should have hidden bunkers like in the cabinets or steel renenforced cabinets. I hope that our states will be safer if we can do anything to prevent this event from happening anywhere we should at least try, to keep our education buildings safe from harm.

    December 20, 2012 at 12:06 pm |
  543. Jazmien

Acquire better ways of protection, not just having security or guns. Providing guns for people only make things worse, because guns help people kill people. And providing security varies, along the lines of personnel and cameras. The question isn't, What can we do? Its How can we prevent this?, which is the hardest to solve. Because this isn't the first tragedy of 2012

I think to keep kids safe in school, they should practice more like maybe have a certain time every week for practicing lock downs and fire drills and tornado drills! And maybe police officers outside of school close by watching the school!

    December 20, 2012 at 12:19 pm |
  553. Sean

I think there should be X-ray machines at school, like in airports. It would give people more jobs to operate them, plus it also would mean some rules kids don't agree with don't need to be in affect.

    December 20, 2012 at 12:19 pm |
  554. Ben

I think we should keep schools safer by having an ID card for every student/staff so when you scan it across a door, it will allow you onto doors (parents of the students can get guest cards for them for a visit).

    December 20, 2012 at 12:19 pm |

I believe a good way to make schools safer with out making it feel like the airport were you wait forever in long lines, is to have constantly monnitored cameras in and outside of the building and have building walk throughs by security.

    December 20, 2012 at 12:55 pm |
  562. Kayla

I think that schools should be more caring about it and a big reason is that nobody's ready and thinks its not gonna happen so I think that schools should have a certain card and u gotta swipe it and it will let u in and it parents come that have to speak through a speaker and tell them who it is what there there for.

My opinion is to put security guards at least two in school in case of an emergency. With the security guards they should carry a weapon. But they need a licenses for the weapon. Also to keep kids safer every school should put brand new security systems all around the school. This is my opinion on how to keep kids safer THANK YOU.

    December 20, 2012 at 2:22 pm |
  580. Lev

I think guns should be illegal only if you have fire arms safety or hunting license or have anything to keep the gun. Also I think they should lock the doors 30min after school starts and if your coming late you have to call the school and tell the principal to open it up for you.

    December 20, 2012 at 2:23 pm |
  581. Eve

I agree with Sarah I think that Americans are given a lot of rights but it doesn't mean we can go around breaking laws. I think that we post more police officers in the buildings. And if we can't do that than we should at least let the teachers that took the time to go to class for conceal carries should be aloud to Carrie guns cause that make the school I feel a safer place because then they would at least know how to use the weapon if it came down to it.

Unforately there are so many things that are beyond our ability to control. It would take pages for me to really expand and express what i think but ill share this: Its much bigger than gun control and more about self control. America can be a safer place for kids if we practice drills more and we should have cops or security's in every school and a guy in a "camera room" to see people that come in and if someone looks suspicious they could just ask him/her questions or something..just in case

    December 20, 2012 at 3:21 pm |
  605. Alma

I don't think schools are making school safe enough there should be at least one secrity officer in the whole school but an officer in each class is to much.

    December 20, 2012 at 3:21 pm |

They should have better security and walking with them in the school

    December 20, 2012 at 3:22 pm |

    December 20, 2012 at 3:23 pm |
  608. Kori

In our High School I think they have cops in the building so I know that there is bad people needed to be caught but I think they should have a few cops from each city help in the schools. There is probably a lot of people in the world that want to become cops and they should be able to become one, if someone wants to become a cop to keep KIDS safe then they should go try to be a cop and tell them about an idea to have a cop or 2 in a school, depending on how big the school is, and having a cop in every classroom is way to much!

    December 20, 2012 at 3:23 pm |

I think that people should really start locking their classroom doors. It helps prevent strangers in going in classes and yeah, they may be able to enter the school, but by the time they figure out that all the doors are locker, the police will probably be on their way already.

I think we have done our best with our safety. I don't think people guns kill people. Guns can't pull the trigger and shoot someone. Bad people kill people. I think we have done our best to safe our kids. We can't not change bad people. We can not put safety to bad people

    December 20, 2012 at 4:27 pm |
  616. Jacob

I think that there really is nothing you can do. If we approve the gun safety law, there will still be guns that people will use for hunting and their own safety.

    December 20, 2012 at 5:19 pm |
  617. Emma

I think we should have someone experienced like a retired cop or some one with a gun in there class room. It should be in a locked box just in case something like this happens.

    December 20, 2012 at 6:01 pm |
  618. Grace

I think that this happened because we don't have good gun control. The type of guns that cause these masacares are the ones that fire multiple bullets per second. Even if all guns can't be taken away, at least those guns should. Listen: there were between three and eleven bullets in each victim that was shot. SOMTHING NEEDS TO BE DONE!!!!!!!!!

    December 20, 2012 at 9:16 pm |
  619. Zoua

I think that to make sure children are safe is that no matter what, every school should have cops nearby regardless of the age of the students. Gun laws should also be improved to provide a better safety to the children.

What I thought about the shooting in Conneticut. First, I thought it was wrong to shoot 20 or so 6-10 year olds. Because their life was just starting and they had their whole future ahead of them ! Second, I was shocked, sad and a little traumatized at first. because of the realization that your life coulld be gone in an instant. Like what happened there. Thirdly, I think that it was amazing what some of the teachers did, like one sacrificed her life for their students. But i felt very, very sad because i have sisters that age and I would be devistatated if they where killed. : (

We need help and need to get nore stuff to help our students safer like, more security with more training, guns that need to be limited focus on mental health care, more staff with guns but they need to learn how to use it.And less acces fro intruders, more security on guard, faster and safer procedures, more law inforcement on guns, more IDcheckers when comming in the school and picking a child up.

I honestly think that the parents who are able and willing to help our kids safe can volunteer to be a school security one parent each day in school. I know some parents might say what about those who have smaller/younger child-ren?, who will watch them if the parent who will volunteer to help school security for that day, well my answer to that question will be, have the other parent watch the younger child-ren for few hours until the volunteering parent gets home that way all kids are being taken care of and also to keep an eye on the kids in school. We all know that once you become a PARENT everything we do is for the best care for our kids. This routine should be done each day while the kids have school days. One Parent One Day to watch with the school security. Im sure there are a lot of parents out there who are willing to volunteer for the sake of the kids who can not defend themselves for another evil that walk and breath among us...
