MLK Memorial Controversy

An inscription at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial at the National Mall read, "I was a drum major for justice, peace and righteousness."

It paraphrased part of a speech that Dr. King once gave, but some people felt it misrepresented what he actually said and made him sound arrogant.  The exact quote:  "If you want to say that I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice.  Say that I was a drum major for peace.  I was a drum major for righteousness."

Officials are planning to remove the inscription altogether, and they don't plan to replace it with anything.  We're wondering whether you think they should - and if so, what would you want included?

I do understand why they would think of replacing it, but is that really ideal? It's taking away a true part of history. It's a quote. We shouldn't change one bit of it.

I agree that it's apart of history but it's not his true words, thus it's not a true part of history. MLK deserves a memorial that represents him the way he truely was with what he actually said.

It is a quote if we change it, it would be wrong. it is part of history and you cant change history.

  2. Trey

I think they should change it because it is not letting people really understand what he meant in this speech. I think if they let visitors of the site see the real sppeech then they could have a better understanding of what it trully means.

The speech is to long to put on the monument,so they should leave it blank.

It is a long speech but it is still apart of history and should not be left out.

I think that they should not get ride of it compleatly and ask his closest family what that agree with.

  4. Trey

I agree to leave it blank because people can not settle on one of Dr. King's sayings.

I think they should replace it with MLK's exact quote, not a paraphrased version. They shouldn't remove the q

I think they should replace the other quote with the original quote because it's a part of history

I think they should replace it with MLK's exact quote, not a paraphrased version. It's a great quote to remember him by – after all, it is a memorial.

I think the officials shuld remove the saying if its going to cause all that troble or at least fix it and put what he really said.

I think that they should change the inscription because that will give people the wrong idea about MLK and I think they should change it to things people think he stood for.

I think they should take off the wrong inscription. They should replace it with the real thing to respect him.

  11. Zoua

I strongly believe they should replace the inscription with a new one because I think what Dr.Marin Luther King Jr. said was a really meaningful thing. I think the new inscription should say, " If you want to see me as a drum major, see me as a drum major for justice, peace, and righteousness.

i think they should because thats making him look like he was prideful and why not just add if to the quote

I think they should not remove the inscription because that is a quote that Martin Luther King Jr. had said.....I will say that the inscription was engraved on there by the officials. If the officials want to exchange it, then let them be...if I was an official, I would have not changed it because it is probably an important message to some people.....

    December 12, 2012 at 8:48 pm |
  13. Devansh

I think they should replace it because we want to honor MLK for what he did and it would be kind of lying instead of putting in the actual quote.

I don't think they should move any thing because its all about are American past so they shouldn't remove ANY thing!!!

it's MLK he is one of the most famous African americans. just write down the originoal quote down and respect him

    December 12, 2012 at 9:38 pm |
  16. Troy

The quote is correct but shorted and I think you should put the entire quote in it

    December 12, 2012 at 10:36 pm |
  17. Elizabeth

They were just shortening it. I think changing it would be a waste of time and money. Putting the actual quote on the monument is like writing "I want a cookie. I want a nap. I want a blanket." When you could just write "I want a cookie, a nap, and a blanket." I'm not saying the quote itself should have been written differently, because it's a good quote. Maybe you could add a plaque somewhere that has the actual quote on it, but is it really that big of a deal?

    December 12, 2012 at 10:46 pm |
  18. Kushal

I think they should put an inscription of his famous quote "I have a dream..."

    December 12, 2012 at 10:46 pm |
  19. Nicolette

It's like putting something on a headstone. Headstones says things like, "beloved father," "mother of four," or in this case, "A drum for justice, peace, and righteousness." If you are that concerned about having the actual quote, put it somewhere else on the monument.

    December 12, 2012 at 10:52 pm |
  20. Zack

The inscription shouldn't be removed at all. What it means to other people is a matter of opinion. If it has to removed, It should be replaced with the original.

  21. Mr. Stillwell's Class

We think that the monument should be changed because it is not really a quote from Dr King. Others in are class say it might take a long time to remake it

    December 12, 2012 at 11:48 pm |
    • ELT Class

Our class agrees with your class because it isn't fair for them to put other words in place of Martin Luther King Jr.'s words.

MLK deservers to have the full quote. Not just part of it. Plus he did not just say that

    December 12, 2012 at 11:54 pm |
  23. MR. Stillwell's Class

We think that it should be replaced because the quote they put on the monument is paraphrased

    December 12, 2012 at 11:57 pm |

  25. Amerlie

If they don't want the inscription to be like that, why not add 'if'? The whole reason for the whole controversy is because of 'if'. I think that if they are taking it out, why not be smart and just fix the mistake?

    December 13, 2012 at 2:02 am |
  26. Dylan

I personally think that they should take it off, But they should at least correct there mistake and put on the exact words of Dr. King. That would be the right thing to do. Even if someone did want it to stay. Why would you want something that wasn't fully said. People are misinterpreting what is put because its a small part of what he said. If it is put back on, with part of his speech it would make more sense.

    December 13, 2012 at 2:05 am |
  27. Mia

I think they should take down the inscription if it isn't the true quote. I also think they should put the real quote in its spot. Have you ever seen a statue without an iscription? Especially for Martin Luther King Jr. His quotes were simply amazing and they say a lot about the way he is and they give inspiration to the people around him.

    December 13, 2012 at 5:56 am |
  28. Daniel

They should be able to include the full quote in the statue.

    December 13, 2012 at 7:30 am |
  29. Jonathan

I believe that officials should remove the inscription. The whole quote should be included because its exactly what King Jr. said and the people have the right to know the real quote, not foul inscriptions.

    December 13, 2012 at 7:30 am |
  30. Anita

Yes, I think they should replace the inscription because it is important to have the exact words of Martin Luther King

    December 13, 2012 at 7:36 am |
  31. Emile

I think what is carved on the MIK Memorial should be the same thing that is on the speech. This in a way is counterfeit when we want the real money which is what MLK wrote on his speech, because the speech started a change which sparked later on in time equal rights for black and whites. That speech, that line should be on the memorial because it means alot to people and it should be known for that reason.

    December 13, 2012 at 8:05 am |
  32. Justin

I think it shall be changed.People can be mistaken what Martin Luther had said in the past .A single word can change the sentence's meaning. So i agree on the statement that is written on the statue shall be changed.

  33. jaden

I say that if the "if" in the poem changes meaning how does it change it. If they have to take it off take it off, but it is the government V.S. the poet.

    December 13, 2012 at 8:19 am |
  34. JAMESHIA

I think it's a good thing because it should not have anything on it that he did not say,but then it was there for a while so they could also leave it alone.

    December 13, 2012 at 8:22 am |
  35. jaden

I say they should just leave it how it is. it is just a shortened version of that one saying. It doesn't matter if they take it off it is just a saying from MLK there are plenty others.

    December 13, 2012 at 8:26 am |
  36. Baker

We think they should remove the current "quote" and replace it with the entire quote that you mentioned on your broadcast.

    December 13, 2012 at 8:33 am |
  37. Parker

If they have an issue with the paraphrased text on the monument then isn't the obvious solution to this problem to put the full quote on the monument.

    December 13, 2012 at 8:43 am |
  38. Connor

I don't think they should replace the statement on the statue. They shouldn't just jump to a conclusion to change it. Some people may think it sounds arrogant but if you know who he really is it shouldn't matter.

    December 13, 2012 at 8:47 am |
  39. Jeremy

They should replace the quote with what he actually said. I think it would mean more to not only the common person, but the people who first criticized the quote for being inacurate.

    December 13, 2012 at 8:50 am |
  40. Curtis

They should remove the segment, however,They should put the true phrase.

I think the inscription should be changed to "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that".

    December 13, 2012 at 9:06 am |
  42. Nicole

I think that officials should take off the inscription because it is not what MLK actually said. If they were to quote him, I think that they should quote him word for word on what he said.

    December 13, 2012 at 9:10 am |
  43. ELT Class

The inscription should be removed and his original quote should be there as he said it. Maybe if Martin Luther King Jr.was alive he would disagree about the quote and want all his exact words used. Family members should make a final decision. Also, they should research his favorite color because the monument looks dull and color would bring life to it. This procress shold not be rushed.

    December 13, 2012 at 9:26 am |
    • JoJo

That's a great idea because Martin Luther King Jr. was and still is respected so now on his monument they didn't put his exact words and that is not being respectful.

I think that they should fix their mistake and replace it with the original quote. That's the best thing that they can do.

    December 13, 2012 at 9:33 am |
  46. Karson

I think that the people should fix the statue because there saying that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said that, and he didn't. What I think that they should do is take it off display, smooth the "quote" out, and rewrite the actual quote onto the statue. Underneath the new quote, they should put what the original quote said, but in small letters, to give whoever the creator credit for him/ her work.

    December 13, 2012 at 9:34 am |
  47. Alexander

they should put the real quot on the memorial in stead of the wrong one

    December 13, 2012 at 9:34 am |
  48. Mike

I think if you are quoting someone they should be quoted accurately. They should put Dr. King's direct quote on the monument. It would be worth the time, money and effort.

    December 13, 2012 at 9:53 am |
  54. Alex

I think they should remove the inscription because if thats not what he said it shouldn't go there. What they should put there is what he actually said than changing what he said. That is considered as History Violation.

    December 13, 2012 at 9:56 am |
  55. Hannah

If I would be them I would do his famous speech. So people can remember his famous speech.

    December 13, 2012 at 9:58 am |

yes because it is a part of history and people should be able to learn the exact speech.

    December 13, 2012 at 10:00 am |
  57. Liese

I think that they should replace the false quote with the real one. There must have been a reason they put the quote there in the first place, because people thought it would make the monument better. It still will. Now it will just be right.

    December 13, 2012 at 10:01 am |
  58. Samantha

I think that they should change it because, Mr. King has done so much for us, that they at least need to ever change it, or correct it.

    December 13, 2012 at 10:04 am |
  59. Sarah

they should really change it because it is a part of the history of amarica and if they change it is like not telling your kids about gorge washinton or takeing away the declaration of indapendance.

    December 13, 2012 at 10:08 am |
  60. Amaris

I think that the real quote should be placed on the statue, MLK is a historic figure, as well as a hero. For it to not be replaced is almost like disrespect. I believe, that either the real quote or something related to Mr. King about the hero, and peace keeper he i should be placed on the statue.

    December 13, 2012 at 10:18 am |
  61. Violet

I think no because in the former speech he said " If you want to say I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice, say that I was a drum major for peace, I was a drum major of righteousness."All the poet did was shorten it. All Dr. King said was call him what ever you think he fought for.

I think that they should take that saying off, because its not his direct quote. They should have yo put the whole entire quote, especially for such an important prsom

I think that they should have used the hole quote. They should not have part of the quote because it made him seem cocky when he is really not cocky.

When you guys replace the words on the statue you should put the words on the statue he was peace, happness, and nice so you should put thoes words on the statue

    December 13, 2012 at 10:42 am |
  66. sam

I think they should not put anything new because it should be what he said not what we think now.

    December 13, 2012 at 10:42 am |
  67. Caitlyn

I think that they should replace it. And they should replace it with a different quote that Martin Luther King said.

    December 13, 2012 at 10:43 am |
  68. Katie

My opinion is that I think that they should take off the short quote and put on the real quote. I think that they should because a quote is somebody's exact words and if they keep that one up then they can't call it a quote, if they put in that much effort to put in a statue of Martin Luther King Junior than I think think that the least they could do is get his quote right.

    December 13, 2012 at 10:44 am |
  69. Brianna

I think they should use a different quote like "I have a dream.", because then people would already know what that means and would not take it the wrong way by the way they shortened the quote that they used.So I do think that they should change the quote they used to some thing like I said so that like I said they won`t take it the wrong way.

    December 13, 2012 at 10:44 am |
  70. Samuel

I think that they should put the whole quoit in because it is famous and mlk.

    December 13, 2012 at 10:48 am |
  71. Matthew

I agree that officials should remove the inscription because it is not exactly word-for-word. If a quote is shortened, then it's not really a quote. However, they should also replace it with the exact quote instead of not including anything else.

    December 13, 2012 at 10:57 am |
  72. Lainie

If the memorial is truly a way to remember Dr. King, it should be true to what he actually said. They should rewrite it with the original wording, as it makes Dr. King appear humble; the way it is written now makes him sound arrogant. Dr. King was anything but arrogant, so we need to be sure his words are not taken out of context.

    December 13, 2012 at 11:01 am |
  73. Analise

I think they should fix the inscription instead of making Martin Luther King Jr. a bad person.

    December 13, 2012 at 11:07 am |

I think that they should put the whole quote on the Memorial. If they kept the one, then they would be lying by puting quotation marks around it.

  75. Mr. J's Social Studies class

If removed, they should replace it with his exact words. I have a dream...that they'll at least put some significant saying of MLK's on the statue

    December 13, 2012 at 11:13 am |
  76. Antoine

I believe they should get rid of that quote and put "I have a dream" quote because that was his trademark. Marin Luther King is known for his "I have a dream" speech and it should be on his memorial.

    December 13, 2012 at 11:35 am |
  77. Gabe

No, I don't think they should remove it. I was a shorted version of some thing he said. And really how would remove it anyway?

no they should'nt because its still the same quote

I think they shouldn't remove the staue of MLK permanently . The staue was sopposed to stay in place for a very long time not to be built for 5 years then being demolished because of one historical innacurate phrase. The staue was built to bring a memory of the famed MLK. And its a waist of money especially in this economy.

I think they should chang it and put his exact words and if its changed that means the tone was changed and that means its not excatly what he said.

I think they shouldn't try to remove it,the memorial is part of history. You can't change history out of thinking its an arrogant part of his speeches. The memorial should stay, its a part of life and culture.

I think they should leave the quote alone. It is part of history and I think removing the quote is sinful. You can't change history. This is important to remember and if you change it, future generations need to know our history. What would you change it to anyway?

I think that they should remove it. After all, it is his memorial, and paraphrasing something, not directly quoting it, isn't right. They should replace it with another one of his famous quotes, one that he actually said.

I don't think they should have paraphrased his saying from his speech as it may make him sound arrogent and change people view of him. They should have just put the whole saying, whats a few more words compared to his reputaion?

  100. Mady

If they do put something in its place just put the actuall thing. To show what he meant exactly. At the same time it shouldn't be a problem for some people who understand the quote or know it then you know what he means by his speech, but for peple who are familiar with this speech they could need that to help them understand what he meant by his words.

    December 13, 2012 at 12:37 pm |

they should change it to what it truly says

    leve it blank

    December 13, 2012 at 12:38 pm |
  103. Matthew

I think they should change the inscription to say what he actually said because it's not what he said and it's disrespectful to make him sound potentially arrogant.

    December 13, 2012 at 12:40 pm |
  104. Jonathan

I disagree about that idea because some people don't who MLK is. I think this is wrong for them to take it instead of keeping it.

    December 13, 2012 at 12:42 pm |
  105. Mrs. Carter's Class

It's a good idea to take this "quote" down as these were not his exact words. The original quote itself is great, so officials should use the entire thing if/when they decide to put something else on the monument.

    December 13, 2012 at 12:43 pm |
  106. bailey

i say that they should remove the the engraved writing because it is not what Martin Luther King jr said and its not what was in the speech.

  107. Arial

I think that they should put what he actually said on the statue, because they had a fake saying there, and now the need the real saying.

    December 13, 2012 at 12:48 pm |
  108. Colby

I think they should put the whole inscription on there because it almost makes him sound a little self centered

    December 13, 2012 at 12:49 pm |

I think they should get rid of the quote and put the actual quote said on it.

    December 13, 2012 at 12:51 pm |

Yes because it is a part of history and people should be able to learn that speech.

    December 13, 2012 at 12:53 pm |

They should just cover it with plaster and maybe if it is so important to put the quote just put it on the right way.

    December 13, 2012 at 12:55 pm |
  114. Caleb

Don't change it at all to much work

    December 13, 2012 at 12:56 pm |
  115. Eli

I think they should either change it or get rid of it, because what he said is like a piece of history, if no one did anything history would be different with if or without if.

    December 13, 2012 at 12:57 pm |
  116. Nicholas

I say no I think they should just keep what is on it and just stay away

I think they should remove it because its not the right quote and it's just not right.

  118. Colby

I think they should redo the writing, because its not the saying that Martin Luther King Jr said. They should write the whole thing on there.

    December 13, 2012 at 12:59 pm |
  119. Killian

Yes they should change it because if I were MLK I would want it to say what I exactly said.

    December 13, 2012 at 12:59 pm |
  120. Dylan

They should take it off but should re-quote his saying

    December 13, 2012 at 1:03 pm |
  121. Caitlyn

I think that they should replace it because they should write exactly what he said. Even if people are lazy and think its more work, they definitely should.

    December 13, 2012 at 1:05 pm |
  122. Carlee

I think that they should change it and not take it away completely.

    December 13, 2012 at 1:10 pm |
  123. Kassandra

I think they should Keep it there!!

    December 13, 2012 at 1:15 pm |
    • James

I think they should drop that quote but add the original one. Keeping it there is an insult to his original quote. We must honor him by putting his original quote on the memorial instead of keeping that quote.

      December 13, 2012 at 6:45 pm |
  124. Destiney

I think it would be good if they dropped the quotes and instead of using the pronoun "I", they should just state:

Dr. King was a drum major for justice, peace and righteousness.

It would summarize his quote and also be a true statement.

    December 13, 2012 at 1:17 pm |

      That is so true Destiney

      December 13, 2012 at 7:11 pm |
  125. Mr. T's Class

The quote should be removed, but it should also be replaced with Dr. King's actual words from 1968. It is disrespectful to misquote someone on their monument. The quote should be corrected.

    December 13, 2012 at 1:28 pm |
  126. matthew

I think that it is not right for them to do that to a hero such as Martin luther king. I am very happy for them to change it.

    December 13, 2012 at 1:51 pm |
  127. Lizzie

I think it should be "I Dreamed a Dream". Because I think people should see and think about the I Dreamed a Dream speech whenever they walk by. I would think it would be a wonderful thing to look at on Martin Luther King day!

    December 13, 2012 at 1:53 pm |
  128. Ian

If people are really bothered by it you can fix it to the right speech otherwise just leave it as it is the point people are suppose to get from the memorial is what he did for us.

    December 13, 2012 at 1:59 pm |
  129. Emelia

Quotes are suppose to be the exact words of a person, if those are not his exact words then they shouldn't be on the memorial.

    December 13, 2012 at 2:00 pm |
  130. Paige

I think that they should definitely replace the quote. Martin Luther King Jr. was very important to our country, so they should have his exact quote! Yes it would take a while but they should change it!

    December 13, 2012 at 2:00 pm |
  131. Skyler

They should remove the paraphrase. They should put on the actual paraphrase.

    December 13, 2012 at 2:01 pm |
  132. Jenny

I think they should replace the words the put on his memorial. If it's a quote it's like he really did say it. He said if not I am so they make a big difference by not putting the if in the quote .It's just not right.

    December 13, 2012 at 2:01 pm |

It paraphrased part of a speech that Martin Luther King Jr. gave and it didn't say what was supposed too and it misrepresented what he actually said.

    December 13, 2012 at 2:02 pm |

i think they should change it to the speech he did like ' i have a dream

    December 13, 2012 at 2:02 pm |
  137. Michael

I think it's ok if they do take it off because because if it wasn't the quote then they should be able to take it down

    December 13, 2012 at 2:02 pm |
  138. Payton

I feel it would make more sense to use a direct quote that Martin Luther King Junior was famous for, since he always had a way with words. People would rather remember him for what he did say, not the shortened version.

    December 13, 2012 at 2:08 pm |
  139. Gabe

I don't think that they should remove the saying at all, I think they should just add the rest of the saying to make it more fair to the people who want it changed. I also think that the monument should have been voted by the public so that this problem would not have happened and it would be perfectly fine.

    December 13, 2012 at 2:32 pm |

I think they should put something els on their from one of his speachs but it has to be word for word or it's not going to be apart of him.

    December 13, 2012 at 2:52 pm |
  143. Carly

I think they should remove it and put "I have a dream today." That was his most famous words>

    December 13, 2012 at 3:14 pm |
  144. Benigno

I think that officials should not remove the inscription altogether because the inscription is what Dr.Martin Luther King Jr. said and his saying are important to us and the nation.

    December 13, 2012 at 3:20 pm |
  145. Maile

Well I think it doesn't really matter any more it's already put in there so just because it's not put in there exactly like Martin Luther King said doesn't mean you have to take it out

    December 13, 2012 at 3:29 pm |
  146. Kailee

It think they should remove it because it's a quote, put it as it was said.

    December 13, 2012 at 3:31 pm |
  147. Emma

I think that they should keep the scripture. Americans should be happy that he changed our nation by outruling slavery, giving people equal rights, and not judging by color. The inscripture explains what he did for this country, and in no means (in my opinion) he was being arrogant or selfish.

    December 13, 2012 at 3:35 pm |
  148. Axel

I think that government official have the right to "erase" the quote that was engraved in to the memorial of MLK Jr. because everyone in the world could see the wrong quote that someone said MLK Jr. said so it got engraved. If the quote gets "erased" I think that the quote should be replaced with the quote that MLK Jr. actually said.

    December 13, 2012 at 3:40 pm |
  149. Emma

I think that they should keep the monument. The word if doesn't change the meaning that much. It also said " If YOU want to say that I was a drum major....." It is talking about YOU. So it really has nothing to do with him. The monument should stay up. And if it gets taken down, they should diffidently put another one up to honor him.

    December 13, 2012 at 3:48 pm |
  150. Nafisa

iI believe that they should remove it but replace it with the actual quote. That way MLK jr's words are known and fully respected.

    December 13, 2012 at 3:50 pm |
  151. Molly

That is a piece of wrong information, if people are going to look at that sentence every day they shouldn't get wrong information. They need to put up the right sentence to honer Dr. King

    December 13, 2012 at 3:50 pm |
  152. Isabelle

This is confusing, I don't get why they don't rewrite the whole quote. If it makes the meaning different then why do you have the quote in the first place him. Also, if the actual quote was that and it makes M.L.K. so bad then why have a monument for him. Think about it.

    December 13, 2012 at 3:51 pm |
  153. Nafisa

I believe that they should remove it, but replace it with the actual quote. That way MLK jr's words are known and fully respected.

    December 13, 2012 at 3:51 pm |
  154. Santiago

I think that they shouldn't remove that qoute of the statue.i say this because he was the one who said it and he deserves that qoute because he said it,and i think we should leave it there and not remove it because it was his qoute and we should respect it because it was not ours it was his.

    December 13, 2012 at 3:54 pm |
  155. Luke

I think that they should remove it because its what MLK said, I think that they should include what MLK really said

    December 13, 2012 at 3:54 pm |
  156. Terra

This should not be removed it is a piece of American History and removing this would be destroying a piece of history.

    December 13, 2012 at 4:00 pm |
  157. Michael

I agree with Maya Angelou that the "quote" seriously misrepresent Dr. King's comments. I think it would be a good idea to list the people who died during Dr. King's time in the struggle for Civil Rights (similar to the Vietnam memorial). Unfortunately, that would probably end in debate over who belongs or doesn't so it is probably best to leave it blank.

    December 13, 2012 at 4:02 pm |
  158. Tessa

I think that they should change what it says on there to what he actually said in the speech.

    December 13, 2012 at 4:07 pm |
  159. Zara

I think that it is good to be removing a quote if it is not accurate, because it can't be counted as something that Martin Luthor King Jr. actually said. I don't think that replacing it is totally necessary, but if it is to be replaced then it should be replaced with the accurate quote or another quote altogether.

    December 13, 2012 at 4:07 pm |
  160. bobby

i dont really know much about about this so its not important to me.

    December 13, 2012 at 4:30 pm |

It dosen't really matter to me because it's just a statue. They could always make a new one if they wanted to anyways. Also though it is their decision.

    December 13, 2012 at 4:33 pm |
  162. MARQUISE

they should remove it because its disrespectful to the dead.

    December 13, 2012 at 4:33 pm |
  163. Alexis

I believe that they should put exactly what he said on the memorial, it was not his quote otherwise.

    December 13, 2012 at 4:33 pm |
  164. chazz

umm no. They should leave it where it is. Its just a statue and martin luther king had a point when he stated it. why would you ruin a piece of art?

    December 13, 2012 at 4:33 pm |
  165. Clayton

I think they should have followed the speech and not put it in there own words. They should just take it off and put it the way that doctor Martin Luther King talked it. I don't think it's a good idea to not to have anything. They should have a picture or video that Martin Luther King was saying or did. That will make it better than just having a couple of words on there.

    December 13, 2012 at 4:34 pm |
  166. miguel

I believe that it shouldn't be removed because its the original memorial and that maybe they could build a new one. Even if it takes longer.

    December 13, 2012 at 4:43 pm |
  167. Benny

I don't think that they should replace the inscription because it would be like cutting off a piece of MLK.

    December 13, 2012 at 4:58 pm |
    • Maha

I have to disagree with you Benny, they changed MLK Jr. 's quote. They took the quote and changed the whole meaning of it,I think they should put his direct words, for changing them will be like changing the whole meaning.

      December 13, 2012 at 7:50 pm |
  168. Madison

I think mack the statement the reel thing or remove the saying comepletly.

    December 13, 2012 at 5:03 pm |
  169. Seth

Change it. A quote is a quote. What is inscripted on the memorial is not a quote. MLK Jr. is anything but arrogant. If that makes people think that he is, then you should definitely change it.

    December 13, 2012 at 5:11 pm |
  170. Jared

Personally I think that since the inscription is being taken off of the monument they should replace it with a different quote.

    December 13, 2012 at 5:16 pm |
  171. Karlie

i think they should remove it and put "I have a dream today" that was his most famous words!!

    December 13, 2012 at 5:22 pm |
  172. Tori

I have great respect for Martin Luther King Jr. and agree that the quote gives off the wrong tone. In my opinion they should remove the inscription but that they should replace it. I think the new inscription should be either "Faith is taking the first step, even when you don't see the whole staircase." or "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter." both of these are quotes from Martin Luther King Jr.

    December 13, 2012 at 5:30 pm |
  173. Hailey

I think that they should put the actual quote from the speech on the plack. Putting that is better than not having nothing at all.

    December 13, 2012 at 5:31 pm |
  174. Amira

Dr. King is an icon for peace, justice and equality not only for African Americans, but for Americans as a whole. We as a country owe it to this man to revise the quote to reflect his true opinions and self image.

    December 13, 2012 at 5:32 pm |
  175. Chris

I think that this should say exactly how it was said by MLK jr in his speech

    December 13, 2012 at 5:44 pm |
  176. Laura

I think that they should replace the old transcript and engrave the new, and real quote into the stone. Marten Luther is only going to say that once, and we need to have it written solid and set in stone, before we loose the quote completely. They shouldn't of changed the quote in the first place.

    December 13, 2012 at 5:57 pm |
  177. Rachel

I think they should not because the people who live there have to remember Martin Luther King's death and that he made slavery to stop.

    December 13, 2012 at 6:03 pm |
    • Barney

Yah your rigth Rachel they should remember his death and that he gave us to NO MORE SLAVERY now I like that comment peace out

I think they should replace it with the correct quote so people won't get the wrong information.

    December 13, 2012 at 6:07 pm |
  179. Kim

They should take that quote off the monument because that monument is there to honor Martin Luther King and state his famous quotes that made a difference. Without the right quotes it defeats the purpose of the quotes being written there because that is not actually what he said.

    December 13, 2012 at 6:08 pm |
  180. Christian

I think they should put the correct inscription on, when you paraphrase it changes the entire meaning.

    December 13, 2012 at 6:13 pm |
  181. Parker

I think the stout should not be Chan

    December 13, 2012 at 6:25 pm |
  182. Noah

I agree that it should be taken out. Only Martin Luther King Jr.'s real words should be put on his real memorial. No one should be putting words in his mouth. They should etch out that quote and of course, I would think, they would put the real quote or a different quote in it's place.

    December 13, 2012 at 6:31 pm |
  183. Amelianna

I think that they should replace the incorrect inscription with a true one, one that maybe the public doesn't know very well so we can grasp a better understanding of him and his valid beliefs.

    December 13, 2012 at 6:33 pm |
  184. Mattie

Why should they carve out the entire quote? Just add the word 'if' to the quote and there is no problem! People looked up to MLK Jr. Just like I do so don't ruin the monument just for a quote that can be easily fixed?

    December 13, 2012 at 6:34 pm |
  185. Josh

If something historical is to be written in stone, then it should be historically accurate to tell what occured, so they should change the inscription on the stone to what he actually said.

    December 13, 2012 at 6:45 pm |
  186. Amira

I believe that MLK was a huge contributor to history, what he said shouldn't be changed. You can't place a historical monument in Washington, D.C and then have the quote inaccurate, it should be fixed or not there at all.

    December 13, 2012 at 7:01 pm |
  187. Honasa

I don't think they should take out the monument. All they should do if change the quote. He was the leader in the African- American Civil Rights Movement and he helped blacks get their freedom. He is VERY important. I think he should be remembered. 🙂

    December 13, 2012 at 7:14 pm |
  188. JCgirl

If an inscription is to be passed as a direct quote, then it should be completely accurate. Yet, I still believe that they should replace it with the direct quote. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a great man, he should get all the respect and recgonition he deserves.

    December 13, 2012 at 7:17 pm |
  189. Brenna

I don't think they should replace it, but they should change it to MLK's original saying. Changing his original saying to something different is like changing part of our history. We should remember him for what he said, not for something that sounds right to one person.

    December 13, 2012 at 7:25 pm |
  190. Gabrielle

I don't think they should because it is a part of history that younger generation can learn.

    December 13, 2012 at 7:26 pm |
  191. Tarek

They should change it because it is not right to change words that are not yours he said a full phrase not half of it

    December 13, 2012 at 8:06 pm |
  192. Gabriela

I think that they should add the "if" at least, but i would prefer for the actual quote to be written exactly the way Martin said it. Even if it costs too much, Martin Luther King Jr. is a very important person in history. They should honor that by using his exact quotes.

    December 13, 2012 at 8:06 pm |
  193. Sydney

I think it's right to change it because it wasn't his exact words it would be okay if they tweaked it a little but the sculptor/engraver pretty much changed the meaning of his words.

    December 13, 2012 at 8:07 pm |
  194. Samantha

It was really lazy of them to paraphrase a quote from MLK and I think they should replace it with his quote, "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."

    December 13, 2012 at 9:10 pm |
  195. Benjamin

If the quote is incorrect, correct it. You should at least leave an accurate quote instead of leaving it blank. That statue is important to a lot of people, and leaving a quote for us to remember is always going to help us understand his motive.

    December 13, 2012 at 9:26 pm |
  196. Miranda

I think that they should just keep it, It does make him sound arrogont. However, They were just shorting it. I don't see why they have to make a big deal out of it.

    December 13, 2012 at 9:34 pm |
  197. Kiri

They should have to write it all out you can't add if to everything a person says and think you could get away without plus it's about an important person that made a movement risking his life for others!!!

    December 13, 2012 at 9:45 pm |
  198. Thandiwe

Of course the inscription should be changed to what he actually said, especially if what was put could interpreted the wrong way. Martin Luther King Jr. definitely is owed the respect.

    December 13, 2012 at 10:13 pm |
  199. Ally

I think they should change it. One world can change it all. If one person learns it like that way then its all wrong. Change it please. I don't want to be looking at something that is wrong from the history.

    December 13, 2012 at 10:16 pm |
  200. Kayla

If they write anything on a historical monument they should write it accurately. So if they can they should change what was written to the actual statement.

    December 13, 2012 at 10:28 pm |
  201. grace

i think that they should put Martin Luther King Jr. actual quote on the mounument beacause even though it will cost money but Martin was a very important person! and he atleast deserves a mounument with his full qoute on it, it's the least we can do for his honnor!(besides the actual day in his honnor, BUT STILL).

    December 13, 2012 at 10:44 pm |
  202. Isaias

I believe that the placard with the inscription should be left where it's at. The reason why is because we need to honor the words spoken by time's greatest activist leaders. Plus, if people really get the meaning of the quote, they'll understand why it was placed there on the first place and how significant it really is.

    December 13, 2012 at 10:55 pm |
  203. Ryley

I think it would disrespectful to to remove it, unless they would put what he really said what if you made a big speech and it had a big effect on our country and we built a stature and wrote something in stone for you would you really want them to change anything on it...if something is written in stone... leave it be

    December 13, 2012 at 11:18 pm |

I think it shouldn't be removed. The artist worked VERY hard on it! It's a part of our history. You can't just throw away an artist's work, even though it doesn't make sense. If something is engraved in stone, DON'T take it down. It's fine the way it is.

    December 13, 2012 at 11:54 pm |
  205. Nicole

I think it would be good to change it. To make others to not see what MLK was saying was arrogant.

    December 14, 2012 at 6:57 am |
  206. chad

MLK's memorial should have his exact words of inspiration on it so it would only be right to have his exact words

    December 14, 2012 at 9:08 am |
  207. Kylee

I think that they should replace the saying. They should replace it with Dr. Martin Luther King's original saying. I think that people then would not be so mad.

    December 14, 2012 at 9:29 am |
  208. Makenna

I strongly believe that they need to change it and make it the whole quote. The quote they have now makes him look like he thought all those things about himself.

    December 14, 2012 at 9:40 am |
  209. Amanda

I think it should be his actual quote so it's more historical. Also, what it is right now, makes him look arrigant and conceited when he was the oppisite.

    December 14, 2012 at 9:40 am |
  210. Ashley

I think they should attempt to change the quote back to the orginal since the new version changes almost everything he meant by it. Now he just sounds like a aggrogant ego jerk. Plus those weren't his words, yet its a memorial about him. Therefore it should only have exact quotes from him

    December 14, 2012 at 9:41 am |
  211. MyMie

I think they should remove it and put what he said instead.

    December 14, 2012 at 9:41 am |
  212. Thomas

they should change it to what he actullay said

    December 14, 2012 at 9:42 am |
  213. Tyrome

I think it matters because people need to know what really happened

    December 14, 2012 at 9:44 am |
  214. Jennifer

If it is historical they should write the whole speech, not summerizee it.

    December 14, 2012 at 9:44 am |
  215. Talia

I think they should keep it like that. As long as people know that its not exactly what he said its fine. if people are giving a tour just have them tell the people what he really said and that that's just short for what he said. there is a possibility that is they cover it back up and try to put something el's there the statue may break and then they wouldn't have any thing to present. I think people would be more angry if they had no statue than if they made some changes to the sentance.

    December 14, 2012 at 9:45 am |
  216. Braiden

I think that they need to put exact words of Martin Luther King JR because he said those words so they need to make it accurate.

    December 14, 2012 at 9:45 am |
  217. Wesley

I think they should not only take it off but replace it with the original phrase. He was a major part in history and that saying has already been on the statue for a while. If you don't change it no one will know what the real saying is and that would be disrespectful.

    December 14, 2012 at 9:45 am |
  218. Daniel

I think they should because its mar thin Luther king did not say that

    December 14, 2012 at 9:46 am |
  219. Angie

I think that they should change the monument. The word "if" can do a lot to a sentence, it looks like he's full of himself. Even though he isn't.

    December 14, 2012 at 9:46 am |
  220. Cori

I think that they should remove the inscription on the Martin Luther King Jr. inscription. I also think that they should replace it with the new one or at least put a new one in its place.

    December 14, 2012 at 9:47 am |
  221. Bryce

A little change in a sentence or a paragraph can make a difference in meanings. Moreover, it's a quote. One should never change a single word when using a quote.

    December 14, 2012 at 10:16 am |
  222. Yasinya

I think that they made the mistake on the memorial that they should take off the unreal quote and change it to the the real quote.

    December 14, 2012 at 10:30 am |
  223. Jonah

I think that they should put the full quote, so that it not change what he said, which will prevent confusion in the future.

    December 14, 2012 at 10:53 am |
  224. Andrew

yes i think that it should say the same i mean he wrote it so just leave it there.

    December 14, 2012 at 11:40 am |
  225. Yoshi

No it shouldn't be removed because some thing might go wrong . no cared in till she showed us . This is just some thing to tell us how we may make mistakes doesn't mean we have to change.

    December 14, 2012 at 11:46 am |
  226. Bryan

The Monument is a memory of a famous African-American.We shouldn't mess with the monument to show respect to him.

    December 14, 2012 at 11:48 am |
  227. Regan

I think it should be removed and, put "I had a dearm and that dream was for every one in American to be treated equally and that dream came true........

    December 14, 2012 at 12:16 pm |
  228. Ashlee

I think they should replace it with the full quote. The memorial is beautiful and a great way to teach kids about what he did and how he thought. The full quote would help to continue that theme.

    December 14, 2012 at 2:01 pm |
  229. Eric

I would mostly agree with all of these people that are positive about this topic.

    December 14, 2012 at 2:07 pm |
  230. Lucy

Why would they change it? I understand it isn'y exactly what MLK said but it gets the point across to what he believed in.

    December 14, 2012 at 2:58 pm |
  231. shaeleigh

i think thisw type of memorial is great where it is. No one should move a historical landmark in one of the greatest places in the whole U.S. No one has the right to move something that means a lot to every one in the whole country.

    December 14, 2012 at 3:00 pm |
  232. Filliam

For someone to interpret something that MLK said as being arrogant is wrong. His message was and is important to many people throughout the entire world. I don't think they should change the inscription, but instead explain to the public what his MLK's true intentions were.

    December 14, 2012 at 3:42 pm |
  233. cruz

i dont think they should take it of if it does not mean to hurt anyone it should stay in less replace it in tell then leave it.

    December 14, 2012 at 3:58 pm |
  234. Tyler

Yes, they should remove it because if something historical is to be written into stone it should be done correctly and with Mr.King's exact words.

    December 14, 2012 at 4:21 pm |
  235. Christina

I think they don't have to do anything with it all they have to do is just put it with cement where the quote is and shen it is dry, re-write the real quote.

    December 14, 2012 at 5:10 pm |
  236. Mya

I think that they should replace it. People want to know why that memorial is there; what specific reason is there for it being there? For this reason, I think that they should replace it with the actual quote. Granted, it's a long quote; however, I believe it's worth it because of what MLK Jr. stood for.

    December 14, 2012 at 5:49 pm |
  237. Aidan

I think it should stay because if we move it, angry protesters may rise to move it back.

    December 14, 2012 at 5:52 pm |
  238. Matt

It would be more historical with the regular discription, so the people don't get the wrong history. It should be moved out, but changed to his original words. And also more people should know, because Martin luther king Jr. was important.

    December 14, 2012 at 6:17 pm |
  239. Becca

Why should replace the incorrect quote?Just add the word 'if' to the qoute there no problem!! People looked up to mlkjr. Just like I do so don't ruin the monument just for a quote that can be easily fixed???
If something historical is to written in stone, then it should be historically accurate to tell what occured, so they should change the inscirption on the stone to what he actally said.

    December 14, 2012 at 7:37 pm |
  240. Indigo

If you are going to incorrectly (or paraphrase) a quote it's not what they said.
Remove or Replace with the correct inscription of what he said.

    December 14, 2012 at 8:15 pm |
  241. Kassidy

If someone major in history has said an important quote, than it is appropriate to quote it. But, if you are going to quote something, and put it in stone, (literally) than you must quote the saying word by word, or the saying inscripted is technically plagerism.

    December 14, 2012 at 8:18 pm |
  242. Amira

Dr. King is an icon for equality, justice, and peace for not only African Americans, but for all Americans. By changing his quote, we change its meaning. The quote should reflect his true opinions and self image.

    December 14, 2012 at 8:24 pm |
  243. Blaise

I think they should take it off and re-carve the manuscript... the reson I think this is because if MLK was till alive today,He might have taken that as an insault.

    December 14, 2012 at 9:25 pm |
  244. Benny

They shouldn't remove the inscription because when they built that statue, it was a way for people to remember MLK. If they take off the inscription it would be like taking off part of his memory.

    December 14, 2012 at 10:53 pm |
  245. Anny

A quote should be accurately preserved and written, not paraphrased or rectified. All or nothing. An alternative quote could be, "I have a dream." – minimalist however says it all.

    December 15, 2012 at 6:43 am |
  246. Terra

I think they should replace the quote and put in the real quote

    December 15, 2012 at 10:12 am |
  247. Sebastian

I think that they should change it because if something should be inscripted in a memorial object to be placed in the public then it should be accurate to what he said.Because of that inaccurate insription, it may make people mad.

    December 15, 2012 at 10:14 am |
  248. Andria

I think that they should change it beacuse people could interpert it wrong. I think that they should use "I have a dream" or something like that.

    December 15, 2012 at 12:04 pm |
  249. Arturo

I think they should replace it with MLK's exact quote, not a paraphrased version. It's a great quote to remember him by – after all, it is a memorial.

    December 15, 2012 at 1:03 pm |
  250. Sasha

Laney, you're at the wrong place, this is about MLK not more time in school

    December 15, 2012 at 1:35 pm |
  251. Brendan

I honestly think it is okay unless there changing history than they should not but otherwise it should not be a huge deal in my personal opinion

    December 15, 2012 at 2:15 pm |
  252. Hannah

I feel like they should replace the abbreviated quote with what MLK actually said. After all, it's what he said that's important to American history, not just a brief review of it. If MLK was here today he would want to change it to his actual words, since it completely changes the meaning of the quote. We cannot ruin the value of our resources.

    December 15, 2012 at 2:22 pm |
  253. Julia

I think that they shouldn't put the whole part of the speech, but at least say the "if" before "drum major" like the speech.

    December 15, 2012 at 5:12 pm |
  254. Julia

No, students need free time to do their homework, and the teachers need time to grade work. my teacher (especially mine) want a break from me because she thinks I talk too much.

    December 15, 2012 at 5:19 pm |
  255. jonni

I think that the words should come down because with this piece of America's past it should be very accurate and clear to people that if we want some of the quote we need to have all or it wont be the same anymore.

    December 15, 2012 at 8:19 pm |
  256. Ashley

I think that the officials should put all of the paragraph that the [part] of the quote came from. Martin Luther King Junior is such a symbolic American, and the people who visit the memorial, like the younger kids, should not grow up to learn that they think Martin Luther King Junior was arrogant. If they replaced the inscription with the original words, than it should not have to be a problem again, and it will be better for the memorial overall.

    December 15, 2012 at 8:22 pm |
  257. will

it would be kind of uncool to put this historical piece in stone to be put aside to never come back,if they were to take it out they should replace it with what he truly said.

    December 15, 2012 at 9:59 pm |
  258. Bryan

I think it should be left as is. A minor paraphrasing error like this is not something very serious. Considering the significant impact MLK, Jr. has had on our nation, this error is one that should be overlooked with little discussion

    December 16, 2012 at 12:56 am |
  259. Konnie

It should be replaced in case people misinterpret it is exactly the same what he said.

    December 16, 2012 at 6:38 am |
  260. Anna

If Martin Luther King said somethng different than what is inscribed on the stone than they should change it but not leave it blank.

    December 16, 2012 at 10:56 am |
  261. Gabe

If you are going to put a quote on a monument, it should be accurate. I think that they should try to remove the old quote, and change it to something more important. Maybe they could change the "drum major" quote to his famous "I had a dream" speech, instead. But if they really like the "drum major" quote, then they should at least change it to the correct form.

    December 16, 2012 at 12:05 pm |
  262. Darrell

“If you want to say that I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice,. . .for peace, for righteousness."

    December 16, 2012 at 12:24 pm |
  263. Anne

If the quote is written in stone, it needs to be accurate. The current quote is misleading because it it is out of context and this changes the meaning of the quote. They need to put the whole quote or leave it blank.

    December 16, 2012 at 12:36 pm |
  264. Jesse

I think you should'nt remove it, because really, it's a big part of history. If you remove it, it's as if you're removing a part of his history, his life.

    December 16, 2012 at 2:12 pm |
  265. Sonia

I think they should change the inscription. Martin Luther King Jr didn't actually say that. The little different wording makes the whole meaning change. Lots of people are going to read it and it would be wrong too mislead them.

    December 16, 2012 at 2:13 pm |
  266. Jesse

It really doen't matter if the words are accurate or not, as long as it's a summary of what he really said. And just because of a few words, you would have to suffer a few days work,or even a week.

    December 16, 2012 at 2:16 pm |
  267. kendrick

they can't change history and MLK.He was a leader, preacher, friend. They can't change the memorial controversy.
