MLK Memorial Controversy
An inscription at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial at the National Mall read, "I was a drum major for justice, peace and righteousness."
It paraphrased part of a speech that Dr. King once gave, but some people felt it misrepresented what he actually said and made him sound arrogant. The exact quote: "If you want to say that I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice. Say that I was a drum major for peace. I was a drum major for righteousness."
Officials are planning to remove the inscription altogether, and they don't plan to replace it with anything. We're wondering whether you think they should - and if so, what would you want included?

I do understand why they would think of replacing it, but is that really ideal? It's taking away a true part of history. It's a quote. We shouldn't change one bit of it.
I agree that it's apart of history but it's not his true words, thus it's not a true part of history. MLK deserves a memorial that represents him the way he truely was with what he actually said.
It is a quote if we change it, it would be wrong. it is part of history and you cant change history.
I think they should change it because it is not letting people really understand what he meant in this speech. I think if they let visitors of the site see the real sppeech then they could have a better understanding of what it trully means.

I think they should not remove the inscription because that is a quote that Martin Luther King Jr. had said.....I will say that the inscription was engraved on there by the officials. If the officials want to exchange it, then let them be...if I was an official, I would have not changed it because it is probably an important message to some people.....

They were just shortening it. I think changing it would be a waste of time and money. Putting the actual quote on the monument is like writing "I want a cookie. I want a nap. I want a blanket." When you could just write "I want a cookie, a nap, and a blanket." I'm not saying the quote itself should have been written differently, because it's a good quote. Maybe you could add a plaque somewhere that has the actual quote on it, but is it really that big of a deal?
I think they should put an inscription of his famous quote "I have a dream..."
It's like putting something on a headstone. Headstones says things like, "beloved father," "mother of four," or in this case, "A drum for justice, peace, and righteousness." If you are that concerned about having the actual quote, put it somewhere else on the monument.
The inscription shouldn't be removed at all. What it means to other people is a matter of opinion. If it has to removed, It should be replaced with the original.
We think that the monument should be changed because it is not really a quote from Dr King. Others in are class say it might take a long time to remake it

I personally think that they should take it off, But they should at least correct there mistake and put on the exact words of Dr. King. That would be the right thing to do. Even if someone did want it to stay. Why would you want something that wasn't fully said. People are misinterpreting what is put because its a small part of what he said. If it is put back on, with part of his speech it would make more sense.
I think they should take down the inscription if it isn't the true quote. I also think they should put the real quote in its spot. Have you ever seen a statue without an iscription? Especially for Martin Luther King Jr. His quotes were simply amazing and they say a lot about the way he is and they give inspiration to the people around him.

I think what is carved on the MIK Memorial should be the same thing that is on the speech. This in a way is counterfeit when we want the real money which is what MLK wrote on his speech, because the speech started a change which sparked later on in time equal rights for black and whites. That speech, that line should be on the memorial because it means alot to people and it should be known for that reason.

I say that if the "if" in the poem changes meaning how does it change it. If they have to take it off take it off, but it is the government V.S. the poet.

I don't think they should replace the statement on the statue. They shouldn't just jump to a conclusion to change it. Some people may think it sounds arrogant but if you know who he really is it shouldn't matter.

The inscription should be removed and his original quote should be there as he said it. Maybe if Martin Luther King Jr.was alive he would disagree about the quote and want all his exact words used. Family members should make a final decision. Also, they should research his favorite color because the monument looks dull and color would bring life to it. This procress shold not be rushed.
That's a great idea because Martin Luther King Jr. was and still is respected so now on his monument they didn't put his exact words and that is not being respectful.

I think that they should fix their mistake and replace it with the original quote. That's the best thing that they can do.
I think that the people should fix the statue because there saying that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said that, and he didn't. What I think that they should do is take it off display, smooth the "quote" out, and rewrite the actual quote onto the statue. Underneath the new quote, they should put what the original quote said, but in small letters, to give whoever the creator credit for him/ her work.

I think that the real quote should be placed on the statue, MLK is a historic figure, as well as a hero. For it to not be replaced is almost like disrespect. I believe, that either the real quote or something related to Mr. King about the hero, and peace keeper he i should be placed on the statue.

If the memorial is truly a way to remember Dr. King, it should be true to what he actually said. They should rewrite it with the original wording, as it makes Dr. King appear humble; the way it is written now makes him sound arrogant. Dr. King was anything but arrogant, so we need to be sure his words are not taken out of context.

I think they shouldn't remove the staue of MLK permanently . The staue was sopposed to stay in place for a very long time not to be built for 5 years then being demolished because of one historical innacurate phrase. The staue was built to bring a memory of the famed MLK. And its a waist of money especially in this economy.

It's a good idea to take this "quote" down as these were not his exact words. The original quote itself is great, so officials should use the entire thing if/when they decide to put something else on the monument.

I feel it would make more sense to use a direct quote that Martin Luther King Junior was famous for, since he always had a way with words. People would rather remember him for what he did say, not the shortened version.

I think that they should keep the scripture. Americans should be happy that he changed our nation by outruling slavery, giving people equal rights, and not judging by color. The inscripture explains what he did for this country, and in no means (in my opinion) he was being arrogant or selfish.

If the quote gets "erased" I think that the quote should be replaced with the quote that MLK Jr. actually said.
I think that they should keep the monument. The word if doesn't change the meaning that much. It also said " If YOU want to say that I was a drum major....." It is talking about YOU. So it really has nothing to do with him. The monument should stay up. And if it gets taken down, they should diffidently put another one up to honor him.

I agree with Maya Angelou that the "quote" seriously misrepresent Dr. King's comments. I think it would be a good idea to list the people who died during Dr. King's time in the struggle for Civil Rights (similar to the Vietnam memorial). Unfortunately, that would probably end in debate over who belongs or doesn't so it is probably best to leave it blank.

I think that it is good to be removing a quote if it is not accurate, because it can't be counted as something that Martin Luthor King Jr. actually said. I don't think that replacing it is totally necessary, but if it is to be replaced then it should be replaced with the accurate quote or another quote altogether.

I think they should have followed the speech and not put it in there own words. They should just take it off and put it the way that doctor Martin Luther King talked it. I don't think it's a good idea to not to have anything. They should have a picture or video that Martin Luther King was saying or did. That will make it better than just having a couple of words on there.

Change it. A quote is a quote. What is inscripted on the memorial is not a quote. MLK Jr. is anything but arrogant. If that makes people think that he is, then you should definitely change it.

I have great respect for Martin Luther King Jr. and agree that the quote gives off the wrong tone. In my opinion they should remove the inscription but that they should replace it. I think the new inscription should be either "Faith is taking the first step, even when you don't see the whole staircase." or "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter." both of these are quotes from Martin Luther King Jr.
I think that they should put the actual quote from the speech on the plack. Putting that is better than not having nothing at all.
Dr. King is an icon for peace, justice and equality not only for African Americans, but for Americans as a whole. We as a country owe it to this man to revise the quote to reflect his true opinions and self image.

If something historical is to be written in stone, then it should be historically accurate to tell what occured, so they should change the inscription on the stone to what he actually said.
I believe that MLK was a huge contributor to history, what he said shouldn't be changed. You can't place a historical monument in Washington, D.C and then have the quote inaccurate, it should be fixed or not there at all.
I don't think they should take out the monument. All they should do if change the quote. He was the leader in the African- American Civil Rights Movement and he helped blacks get their freedom. He is VERY important. I think he should be remembered. 🙂
If an inscription is to be passed as a direct quote, then it should be completely accurate. Yet, I still believe that they should replace it with the direct quote. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a great man, he should get all the respect and recgonition he deserves.

If the quote is incorrect, correct it. You should at least leave an accurate quote instead of leaving it blank. That statue is important to a lot of people, and leaving a quote for us to remember is always going to help us understand his motive.

i think that they should put Martin Luther King Jr. actual quote on the mounument beacause even though it will cost money but Martin was a very important person! and he atleast deserves a mounument with his full qoute on it, it's the least we can do for his honnor!(besides the actual day in his honnor, BUT STILL).
I believe that the placard with the inscription should be left where it's at. The reason why is because we need to honor the words spoken by time's greatest activist leaders. Plus, if people really get the meaning of the quote, they'll understand why it was placed there on the first place and how significant it really is.

I think it shouldn't be removed. The artist worked VERY hard on it! It's a part of our history. You can't just throw away an artist's work, even though it doesn't make sense. If something is engraved in stone, DON'T take it down. It's fine the way it is.
