Best Gift to Give

'Tis the season of giving, and we at CNN Student News are interested in what you think is the best gift to give.  It could be something as simple as baking cookies for someone - or it could be something more complicated, like a pony.

Whatever your ideal gift to give - or get - may be, we hope you'll share it on our blog.

Keeping Kids Safer

In Tuesday's show, you hear President Obama ask whether Americans are doing enough to protect the nation's children from violence.  "If we're honest with ourselves, the answer's no," he says.

Do you have ideas on how to do this?  We'd like to incorporate your thoughts on what can be done in the U.S. to keep kids safer.

Connecticut School Shooting

On Monday, we report on a shooting at a Connecticut elementary school.  As you hear me say in the show, the incident probably left you with a lot of questions; it left us with a lot of questions, too.  But if you feel comfortable typing out your thoughts - whether they're questions, observations, reflections or prayers - here is one place where you can do it.

MLK Memorial Controversy

An inscription at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial at the National Mall read, "I was a drum major for justice, peace and righteousness."

It paraphrased part of a speech that Dr. King once gave, but some people felt it misrepresented what he actually said and made him sound arrogant.  The exact quote:  "If you want to say that I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice.  Say that I was a drum major for peace.  I was a drum major for righteousness."

Officials are planning to remove the inscription altogether, and they don't plan to replace it with anything.  We're wondering whether you think they should - and if so, what would you want included?

More Time at School

Next year, about 20,000 U.S. students will be spending more time at school.  A new program, taking place in five states, will keep schools open a little more than an hour and a half longer (on average) throughout the day.

It doesn't necessarily mean that students will be spending more time in social studies or science classes, though that is possible.  The program aims to offer additional educational opportunities, like internships or apprenticeships, and ensure some programs like drama and sports stay in place.

Many students may not like the idea; a middle schooler interviewed by a CNN affiliate said that students "just want to get out of school and have a little break" from learning.

But let's say your school was planning to stay open an extra hour and a half.  How would you want to spend it?

Opinions and Broadcasting

By quoting another sports reporter during a football broadcast on Sunday night, veteran broadcaster Bob Costas appeared to take a side on the controversial issue of gun control.

Some people think Costas did the right thing by drawing attention to the issue; others say he shouldn't have voiced his opinion or brought up the issue at all.

What's your take on what Costas did?
