Push-Up Punishment
Rather than making arrests and filing a police report, officers in North Providence, Rhode Island had a different idea when they caught some young people allegedly vandalizing a mailbox: Police made them do some roadside push-ups.
Critics - and the local mayor - don't think police should've decided on the punishment themselves. But some residents support the officers' idea, saying justice was served.
What do you think of this punishment?

As much as a punishment was needed, it wasnt up to the police officers themselves to decide the punishment. No matter the level of severity of the crime, the police officers should not decide the punishment. They aren't qualified to do so legally.
God would give them a second chance now who agrees.
Although they should not have done that, I think that this will teach them a lesson on not to vandalize others property

I believe this push up punishment is unfair. Everyone has a different way of handling them, maybe in a good or negative way. The police should not have decided this either... it is obviously not the way the law intended people to get punished for their bad deeds. If people only have to do push ups, then wouldn't they think they may be getting off the hook? Push ups are not as bad as a ticket and our easier to handle. Exercise is much different than paying money for what you have done. This is not what everyone is used to and it won't be an effect on the criminal minds.

I think that if these guys are going to do something like vandalizing someone else's property, then they should automatically go to jail for breaking the law. The punishment for doing something against the law is jail. Having to do push-ups as a punishment is for gym class.
They deserved it and besides the crime wasnt severe and neither was the punishment...nothing wrong with the oldschool DROP AND GIVE ME TWENTY!!!! 😀 haha
In our Tae-Kwon-Do school we use push-ups as a punishment so I think that is perfectly fin to give push-ups as a punishment. Though it was not right for the police to give a punishment the vandals deserved it in a way.
I think that it was wrong to force the boy to do push ups I would have just reported it.
Its good for the officers to attempt to teach the students but he took it too far. The officer should had never put the situation in to his own hands.
It wasn't very smart for the police to do that. I mean, it's teenagers.. a few little push-ups aren't going to teach them anything. They will just laugh it off and go do the next dumb thing they have planned.

I believe the push up punishment was fair. They done something wrong they should be punished for it. Would you rather do push ups or go to jail? It could of been a lot worse they are just lucking enough they didn't mess with the wrong people!
I'm not surprised by this punishement because it's quite popular in my homecountry. Misbehaved boys in PE class usually receive this kind of punishment. I think this policeman is quite creative to deal with those gangsters who should be used to punishment for wrongdoings. This type of punishment doesn't cause any harms. In fact, it has two benefits. First, they are immediatly aware of their just bad deeds. Second they may lose some weight, So, why not?
I think this push up punishment is unfair because it is different than paying money. People need to pay the money as a fine instead of push ups. Push ups won't teach them a lesson and they might keep doing the wrong thing more and if they pay the fine then they will learn their lesson. The government needs the money for important things to help the country be a better place. Maybe they should have even went to jail. Exercise will make the criminal stronger if he/she does it. It won't really have any effect to the criminal. They are not as bad as tickets, jail, or fines and they handle push ups easier than tickets or fines. The police don't have the right to change the law legally, the government and president does.
I believe that there was a clear violation of the 8th amendment here, which states that "There will be no Cruel and unusual punishments inflicted." However, if the law enforcement officials felt it was necessary for safety so it wouldn't happen again, then they have an obligation to put safety before anything else.

In the old chinese idiom, there is a saying, "an eye for an eye"... (I think many know it) the police should NOT have decided their punishment. And plus, exercise is something that some people do paying money. Doing push-ups would have no effect on the criminal's mind. If this keeps going on and on, then it is guaranteed that crime rates will rise in America. Surely, think about it. What if punishment for murder was 500 push-ups? Justice was DEFINITELY NOT served in this situation.

Those teenagers should have faced the right consequences to the crime they committed. Whether it was a small crime, or a big crime, they should have had a righteous and fair punishment. This punishment shouldn't have been something light like push ups which is a type of exercise. The police don't have the right to and shouldn't just come up with a random punishment like push ups. Polices are officers that help the nation as a whole in terms of security and justice, but these polices didn't make a fair punishment. I think those these teens wouldn't have learnt a proper lesson by doing push ups. A small crime is still a crime.

I believe that this push up punishment is unfair. The police should not have made them do push ups. Some better solutions could have been take them home to their parents in the police car...... or they could have let the parents decide the punishment...... they could have even made them spend a night in jail so that they would see the effects of their actions. That way they would have learned that even the smallest crime like vandalizing a mailbox has serious effects that way they would not progress to more serious crimes like robbery in the future.
I think that the push-up punishment was unorthodox and was ok for the situation but they should be put on record. If the situation was more serious then they should not have used push-ups to punish the vandals.
I disagree with the push up punishment. The kids should have been arrested properly for their vandalism. Punishing them with push ups was not professional. The police should have punished them properly because this shows police can make up their own punishments. This should have been a decision by a judge.
I'd rather do push-ups than pay a fine. 100 push-ups = $100
I think it's both fair and unfair. Fair, because my coaches make me do push ups if I'm late for practice, but unfair because those officers don't have actual authority over those kids, like parents and coaches do. I like the show of authority but not the overstepping of boundaries on the cops' part.
If criminals only had to pay fines for vandalism, I don't believe any moral value would be instilled. Physical service like public maintenance or community service are used to shape young individual who have committed minor criminal acts. Why should being forced to do push-ups be any different? Physical labor also breaks an individual's mentality, which may may them think twice about committing a similar act.
I agree with this punishment but should not be inforced by the officers.

Making kids do push ups is harmless. Although more could’ve been done to the young people to reinsure that it will not happen again, it was a perfectly good punishment. Anybody can agree that they would rather do push ups then pay a fine.
I honestly think it is a good idea to make miners do push-ups for a punishment. Reason being is that they are doing physical work, people these days don’t like to do stuff physical. So there’s a better chance that they will think twice before they do it again. But the cops should have taken their names incase they do, do it again.

I think that the push-up punishment was acceptable for the vandals because it was just a mailbox. But, it could be a problem in the future because other kids could go off and vandalize millions of mailboxes and think that the worst that could happen would be that they have to do push-ups. So, the punishment might have served justice the first time but it could be a problem in the future.
I think that the push-up punishment was okay for that situation. With a small crime like that it is okay to do because it shows them what they did was wrong without having anything on their record. The punishment would only be okay if it was a small harmless crime that the one the kids were accused of, but if it was a larger crime it shouldn’t be an option.

The idea was a good one, a punishment more fit for the offense. The problem, however, is that push-ups don't discourage the action. If i were considering commiting the offense i would fear going to jail for the act, but wouldn't fear doing push-ups. Jail, however, shouldn't be the punishment for smashing a mailbox.

I think that the punishment was a good idea. The people shouldn’t have been arrested for such a small crime, but they shouldn’t have gotten away with it without punishment. So, doing push ups was a good idea to teach them a lesson.
I think that their punishment was a very good way to handle it. Instead of giving the kids a criminal record, and potentially ruining the chance of them getting a job/career, they handled it by using physical punishment, which was a great way to handle the situation.
I support what the cops did because it’s better than going to jail or getting it put on your permanent record.
Even though the police decided on the punishment themselves, it was a better punishment, the push-ups, for the people who vandalized the mailbox. Arresting them would have seemed like a logical idea, but it would have taken the crime too far. The people who vandalized the mailboxes should have taken that as a warning, though, and if they were to do it again, that they should be arrested instead of expecting them to only have to do push-ups again.
I don’t think that the police officers should’ve decided what the punishment was. Making the teens do push-ups may have been teaching them a lesson, but it should not have been decided that way. The parents should have at least been called.
I think we should have push up punishment. Not only would we be lowering crime rate, we would also be lowering the obesity levels. Talk about killing two birds with one stone. If they happen to be repeat offenders then they will at least be in shape and would eat less food in prison. Now we don't have to spend all that extra tax money on the overweight prison population.

II think that it was a good punishment for the teenagers. The punishment most likely taught them a lesson not to do things even when people aren't watching.
I definitely support the push up punishment the cops did in Rhode Island. The kids should not get arrested for such a small crime, but at the same time should not get away with it. I think doing the roadside push up’s gave them a lesson, but not such a harsh lesson.

I believe that the punishment for people who are caught by police men should have their punishment be not as the police want it, but as the mayor or person in charge wants it.

Even though the police of North Providence held consequential punishment against vandalism, they should not have come up with the idea of forcing people to do roadside push-ups. I don’t believe it was right for them to come up with this idea without confronting other law enforcers.
Its better than going to jail and getting a charge so i support it.

I think it was fair because this give those young adults another chance to live their lives with no change other than that they had to do push-ups, but other than that i think it was a good punishment and that they should be thankful!!

I think that it was a good idea to make them do push-ups instead of sending them to jail. I believe that this punishment was not as bad as people think it is. It's a good way to punish them instead of taking them in because you are giving them a chance to realize what they have done without possibly ruining a job oppurtunity with the record of vandalism.

I totally support what to police did to those kids because it is teaching them a lesson about destroying another ones property. If they don’t like push ups they won’t do it again.
While I feel that the police officers did not have the legal right to do so, I appreciate their attempts to teach the vandals a lesson. Physical punishment is the best way to imprint a message, even if it is morally flawed. And since this did benefit the vandals both mentally and physically, I believe that if we edit (for lack of a better word) the process, this could be a very profitable idea. We will be getting America fit while either promoting exercise to those who appreciate the lesson, or leave a message for those who don't. Overall, I agree.
I think that the push-up punishment was a bad idea. The reason I think it’s a bad idea is because now teenagers or kids will think they can do what they want and think the punishment will be pushups.
I support the push up punishment only because instead of them going to jail and that being on there record forever they just had to do push ups. Doing push ups still probably taught them a lesson in a less scary way just in a really painful way. The cops had the right to make the kids do push ups so now they know if they do it again its their fault because the cops let them off easy the first time but next time its probably jail.

Justice was served. Would you rather go to jail or do 50 pushups? This police officers are trying to punish them without putting them in jail or putting it on the record. They are trying to make them a better future.But in ways i could see how its not fair. What if it was a murder and the made him do 50 or so pushups and let him get away.

I think the push up punishment was fair. The officers took into consideration that they were teenagers and they wanted to teach them a lesson. Instead of sending them to jail, they thought the push ups would count as a warning and teach them a lesson.

Honestly, in my opinion I don't think mailbox vandalism is very serious. A push up punishment? Yeah I support that. After they got caught by the police, the kids should know not to do it anymore.
I think that the punishment was perfectly fine. It doesn't hurt anybody to do a little work every now and then. After a few times the kids will quit vandalizing so they don't have to do work.
I don't believe this was right for a cop to do. If they break the law, no matter how old they are, everyone should be punished the same. If we give young people special punishments they will grow up to not take the law very seriously.

I don't think it was right. They should have followed their protocol! I know a cop that didn't follow his protocol and got fired as soon as the higher ups found out. It shouldn't be taken lightly like that. I think the cop was completely in the wrong.

The punishment is defiantly fair! If the kids were behaving they wouldn't have gotten on trouble. They deserved what they got if not more punishment.

I think the punishment was fair. It is good for young adolescence to get a warning. In a way the push-ups were kind of like a warning in stead of taking them straight to jail, they did push ups.
A cops job is to enforce the law, and punish those who break it, but there are certain ways to punish. I dont think it was right for the cop to make them do push-ups, yet suspention seems a little drastic. I think a warning would have been enough to change his mind.
I think that they got what they deserved. The police did the right thing and the teenagers should be grateful that all they had to do was push-ups.
We think that been arrested for a little amount of time because they did do it but for only a few days because their teens but almost twenty so they should probably pay for the mailbox do pushups and go to jail for about two or three days 🙂
I belive this punishment is fair because if you where in there shoes you would want to not have to go to juvinile detention center, because its a minor crime they should have to do the amount of pushups for how much money they owe.

push ups are a very difficult thing to do, because the crime wasnt as serious, the punishment was reasonable. i think it was very justified. shouldnt be considered big of a deal as long as they have learned their lesson.

I don't think it's okay, because I don't think the group of people that did it would learn their lesson. But i don't think the officer should be suspendid.
I think that what they did wasn't worth any charges,and making them do push-ups was probably just to embarrass them. I mean, these aren't hard criminals, they are just kids, who pushed down mailboxes.. If they did something worse, sure.
But if they just gave them a warning, this wouldn't be news. kids get warnings all the time... who does a few push-ups hurt?

Mail boxes are not cheap. I think the people should pay to replace the mailboxes. Doing pushups does not fit the crime.

I think that what those officers did was nice but I don't believe that it was the right choice. If he was trying to teach the kids a lesson then he should have put them in the back of the cop car and drive them down town, then the kids would be scared and not want to do that again. You don't learn your lesson by doing push ups, you learn your lesson by getting a real punishment.
As much as i agree that the police were wrong about making the kids do push ups as a punishment, i still belive those kids should not have gotten away unpunished, a fine yes. Push ups no.
Personally I don't think that this was absurd for a "punishment". But at the same time I do think it is unfair, because other states haven't tried this, at least not that I know of. If this ends up being the consequences for vandalism then I think that it would be cool, you don't pay for vandalism or damage of property.

I believe doing push-ups is indeed fair. Would you rather get push-ups or go to jail? While others believe their own way, sometimes you need to take action for your mistakes.
I dont think that the the boys should did what they did. Well, the officer should put them I Jail. I think at that officer should get punish for what he did to the boys. Officer should not be doing that to them boys
I say that the officers did a good/bad thing because you wouldnt wanna go to jail or get a fine.The officers kinda did the boys a favor, but it does depend on what the kids did. If it was a small thing then it would be good punishment. I also say that its not up to the officers to do so. It should be the kids and thier parents picking or deciding their punushment. But its unfair cause not everyone gets to get that punishment.

I think that they should get a more serious punishment. If I was a cop I would take them to jail to get them scared so they will never vandalize a mail box again.
i think that this was not the full punishment because they know that they are supposed to and suspension is the right punishment for this although they should have called their parents and fined the teenagers that did it.

I think that the officers did the right thing. The teens didn't need a jail or money fine. I think that doing push-ups gives some dicipline. If they got caught doing this in the middle of taking the mail they shouldn't be going to jail or getting a fine. What if was only one mailbox they shouldn't have to go to jail for almost stealing 1 mailbox.

I like that idea but i would not think it would work everytime. It would be smart to do it once in a while.
I think push-ups are a good punishment, but in a situation like this they should have got something more disciplinary than just push-ups. You never know tomorrow they can be doing it again and what will they get... more push-ups?

The fact of the matter isn't whether push-ups were a good punishment, it's more along the lines of what they did. They vandalized and push-ups were not a decent punishment. If you mess up you need to realize what you did and pay the time.
I think they should have got something worse jail it a better way to handle it, Vandalism is a crime and push-ups do not fix the mailbox.

If you cause the problem it needs to be fixed, whether you're an officer or not you can't just think push-ups will change their minds. If they get away with it then they'll just go back for more. I think a more proper punishment is in order for the delinquents.
Push-ups are nothing jail would have been what a good cop would have done I'm disappointed in the fact that they think push-ups could fix the problem.
I think that it's fair because the kids weren't adult yets and they made a mistake. Although the cops shouldn't have been doing that, they gave a punishment that the teens deserved. The boys should be thankful because if that hadn't happened, they would've been arrested!

Push-ups are a good punishment for someone in ROTC or a military branch but not in a crime.
I believe this push up punishment is unfair. Everyone has a different way of handling them, maybe in a good or negative way. The police should not have decided this either... it is obviously not the way the law intended people to get punished for their bad deeds. If people only have to do push ups, then wouldn't they think they may be getting off the hook? Push ups are not as bad as a ticket and our easier to handle. Exercise is much different than paying money for what you have done. This is not what everyone is used to and it won't be an effect on the criminal minds.

I honestly would take the option to do the push ups, But after you think about it, It is reall unfair. Some teens who did crime, had to pay full price for the ticket, and spend time in prison. I think the cop should have arrested the two people. The reason why is because they broke the law they should go to jail it’s as simple as that. I don’t really see how hard it is to understand it they broke someone else’s property it’s a federal offensse and they shouldn’t have had to do push ups on the side of the street, but in there jail cell.

I AGREE with what the cops did because i think it would cost the state less money and less room being used up in jail for the people who really need to go to jail. I think that it was a good idea but i think that if its for something really small and not a really big deal they should do that but if it for like assault or something like that then they should get arrested. if that happened to me i would thank the cop for not taking me to jail.
I applaud the officer, I belive he did a job well done. One reason is because i am a very active person and strongly belive in physical fitness. Exercise is very healthy for your body.

I personally think they should not make them do pushups because they might be too strict. Suspending them is not a punishment to a teen it is a freedom to them. They should have them do a few hours of community service instead.
I think the cops were okay in making the young teens do pushups. I don't think the police should get in trouble for it. The teens should be thankful to not have a police report and/ or suspension even if they don't like it.

I agree with Brian. Simply put, these kids needed to be disciplined for their actions. The effects of this sort of punishment on the vandals might even teach them that they can get away with similar acts in the future.
When the police officers took the matter in their own hands it was doing wrong. But I don't think they should be suspended for making people who still have a family and people that love them go to jail when all they did is make a stupid mistake. I think it is a good punishment because it teaches kids that instead of going to jail they just have to disciplinary work. Also I think that it is basically a get out of jail free card. Literally. This will teach kids not to do bad things anymore because nobody likes pushups, especially when you are told to do them by a police officer.

Having the offenders perform push ups seems a just punishment. Keeping minor offenses out of the court system helps reduce taxes, court time and also helps the future of the individuals involved. A minor mistake in youth can affect their entire lives. Physical labor never hurt anyone, maybe a few more push ups will make them think before vandalizing next time.

I think it was ok what the police did because if that was me i would rather do push ups than go to jail. But at the same time they did do wrong, those kids must have been really humiliated and felt bad. As long in the end they learned thier lesson it was worth it.

I say the kids deserved to do such a numerous amount of push-ups (maybe even a few more would not kill them). For starters, they'll get their exercise and lose some weight for the day ahead of them. Additionally, it will help them remember not to vandalize other folk's mailboxes and disturb another person's privacy. I would be beating em' with the mailbox itself they tried invade.
I don't agree with what the officers did because if they were causing trouble and destroying objects that weren't their's, then they should do a service project or an act of kindness for them.
i support this punishment.Even if you don't do it right, you still need to do push-ups. Everyone can do it differently than others. Everyone needs to know the consequences of their actions and how they effect other people.

Giving the teens push-ups were wrong. This will only encourage them to do it more because they got off with a light statement. Also, push-ups make you stronger. We don't want these teens getting stronger. It will lead to disaster.
I think it was a good idea. Although, you should never vandalize anything, even a mailbox, would you put someone in jail for that? By making them do push-ups it was the officer's way of letting them off with a warning.
I believe justice was served. If criminals only had to pay fines and go to jail then what's all that compared to some push ups? People are just over reacting to something as small as some push ups. We've all done them before.

I think that the police did well in choosing a punishment. I can see the other sides’ views, and the feelings and opinions they may have had, but it was a reasonable, if not outright smart way to deal with these teenagers. Sometimes I think that the law goes too hard with punishing teens, they need to show them that what they did was wrong, but they don’t need to brand them as a criminal for life. These cops saw that the deeds these teenagers were doing were wrong, but instead of acting as if the kids were full-fledged criminals they treated the teens like the misguided young people they were. They accused them, and punished them in a logical way, and hopefully the teens will remember that, but they did not go too far and forget that these were still kids.

I think that it is a very good punishment because in the first place they shouldn't be doing that plus, for them it is a smaller punishment then going to jail.
I think that the police should have arrested the teens and had them face punishment by the judicial system; they vandalized a mailbox and should face the consequences for doing so. Now don’t get me wrong, I think that having the teens do push-ups was a good idea I just don’t think that the cops had the power to choose the punishment, a judge does. I don’t think that the cops should get in trouble for administrating the punishment; they just should not do it again. I think making the teens do push-ups was a good idea but the cops should not have decided on the punishment without legal permission.
I don't think the police should've made of them do push ups on the side of the road because they should make sure people follow the rules and not make up there own punishments. The town should have a vote on what should be done when kids break the law and vandelize property. Maybe they should pay to have what they broke fixed or fix it themselves if the town votes that way.

Absolutely great punishment however it is up to a judge not police officers. If we start allowing police to hand out punishments we undermine the whole judicial system.
The US Army uses pushups for punishment. If it is acceptable for the armed forces then why not for some kids causing problems?

I don't think it would be a reasonable punishment. Some children don't have upper body strength, therefore they can not do push-ups.

The teens should have gotten arrested because since they had to do push-ups they might think that its okay to do bad things and if they get caught they might think that they will have to do push-ups

I think it was right for them to give them this punishment. Any other time it would have been wrong of them. It all depends on the situation. Had it been that they were just talking during class it would have been wrong of them to do so. So i guess you can say i am for it but in many ways against it as well.

I like what the officers are doing.My mom is an officer so it would be funny to hear her come home and say I made a guy do push ups today.
It wasn't serious enough for jail, but too serious for push-ups. Why make them exercise for a few minutes when they could do something useful, like community service?

The officers didn't really have the authority to punish them but it wasn't really a punishment at all. I mean push ups? They're easy and people do push ups all the time. They deserve some more kind of punishment for vandalizing property. Its just encouraging them to do it again.

I think that doing push-ups for a punishment doesn't teach the person a lesson. Push-ups are more for a workout or P.E., not a punishment for a crime. Going to jail will teach them a lesson that what they did was wrong.

My coach for volleyball makes us do tons of push ups, but that's for a sport and to make us stronger. Vandalism is a crime and should be dealt with like a crime.

I don't think that was a good punishment. If they only had to do push ups some might say, " Hey we can get away with it because all we'll have to do is push ups!" If people are really doing something wrong they should be punished. And not with a few simple push ups.
