Rather than making arrests and filing a police report, officers in North Providence, Rhode Island had a different idea when they caught some young people allegedly vandalizing a mailbox: Police made them do some roadside push-ups.
Critics - and the local mayor - don't think police should've decided on the punishment themselves. But some residents support the officers' idea, saying justice was served.
As much as a punishment was needed, it wasnt up to the police officers themselves to decide the punishment. No matter the level of severity of the crime, the police officers should not decide the punishment. They aren't qualified to do so legally.

I believe this push up punishment is unfair. Everyone has a different way of handling them, maybe in a good or negative way. The police should not have decided this either... it is obviously not the way the law intended people to get punished for their bad deeds. If people only have to do push ups, then wouldn't they think they may be getting off the hook? Push ups are not as bad as a ticket and our easier to handle. Exercise is much different than paying money for what you have done. This is not what everyone is used to and it won't be an effect on the criminal minds.

I think that if these guys are going to do something like vandalizing someone else's property, then they should automatically go to jail for breaking the law. The punishment for doing something against the law is jail. Having to do push-ups as a punishment is for gym class.

In our Tae-Kwon-Do school we use push-ups as a punishment so I think that is perfectly fin to give push-ups as a punishment. Though it was not right for the police to give a punishment the vandals deserved it in a way.

It wasn't very smart for the police to do that. I mean, it's teenagers.. a few little push-ups aren't going to teach them anything. They will just laugh it off and go do the next dumb thing they have planned.

I'm not surprised by this punishement because it's quite popular in my homecountry. Misbehaved boys in PE class usually receive this kind of punishment. I think this policeman is quite creative to deal with those gangsters who should be used to punishment for wrongdoings. This type of punishment doesn't cause any harms. In fact, it has two benefits. First, they are immediatly aware of their just bad deeds. Second they may lose some weight, So, why not?
November 28, 2012 at 9:50 pm |
Alexandra
I think this push up punishment is unfair because it is different than paying money. People need to pay the money as a fine instead of push ups. Push ups won't teach them a lesson and they might keep doing the wrong thing more and if they pay the fine then they will learn their lesson. The government needs the money for important things to help the country be a better place. Maybe they should have even went to jail. Exercise will make the criminal stronger if he/she does it. It won't really have any effect to the criminal. They are not as bad as tickets, jail, or fines and they handle push ups easier than tickets or fines. The police don't have the right to change the law legally, the government and president does.
November 28, 2012 at 10:34 pm |

I believe that there was a clear violation of the 8th amendment here, which states that "There will be no Cruel and unusual punishments inflicted." However, if the law enforcement officials felt it was necessary for safety so it wouldn't happen again, then they have an obligation to put safety before anything else.

In the old chinese idiom, there is a saying, "an eye for an eye"... (I think many know it) the police should NOT have decided their punishment. And plus, exercise is something that some people do paying money. Doing push-ups would have no effect on the criminal's mind. If this keeps going on and on, then it is guaranteed that crime rates will rise in America. Surely, think about it. What if punishment for murder was 500 push-ups? Justice was DEFINITELY NOT served in this situation.

Those teenagers should have faced the right consequences to the crime they committed. Whether it was a small crime, or a big crime, they should have had a righteous and fair punishment. This punishment shouldn't have been something light like push ups which is a type of exercise. The police don't have the right to and shouldn't just come up with a random punishment like push ups. Polices are officers that help the nation as a whole in terms of security and justice, but these polices didn't make a fair punishment. I think those these teens wouldn't have learnt a proper lesson by doing push ups. A small crime is still a crime.

From Mr. Mike's Juvenile Detention Center ( Social Studies class),

I believe that this push up punishment is unfair. The police should not have made them do push ups. Some better solutions could have been take them home to their parents in the police car...... or they could have let the parents decide the punishment...... they could have even made them spend a night in jail so that they would see the effects of their actions. That way they would have learned that even the smallest crime like vandalizing a mailbox has serious effects that way they would not progress to more serious crimes like robbery in the future.
November 29, 2012 at 11:44 am |
Aaron
I think that the push-up punishment was unorthodox and was ok for the situation but they should be put on record. If the situation was more serious then they should not have used push-ups to punish the vandals.
November 29, 2012 at 1:03 pm |
Vivian
I disagree with the push up punishment. The kids should have been arrested properly for their vandalism. Punishing them with push ups was not professional. The police should have punished them properly because this shows police can make up their own punishments. This should have been a decision by a judge.
November 29, 2012 at 1:32 pm |

I'd rather do push-ups than pay a fine. 100 push-ups = $100
November 29, 2012 at 1:33 pm |

I think it's both fair and unfair. Fair, because my coaches make me do push ups if I'm late for practice, but unfair because those officers don't have actual authority over those kids, like parents and coaches do. I like the show of authority but not the overstepping of boundaries on the cops' part.
November 29, 2012 at 1:33 pm |

If criminals only had to pay fines for vandalism, I don't believe any moral value would be instilled. Physical service like public maintenance or community service are used to shape young individual who have committed minor criminal acts. Why should being forced to do push-ups be any different? Physical labor also breaks an individual's mentality, which may may them think twice about committing a similar act.

Making kids do push ups is harmless. Although more could’ve been done to the young people to reinsure that it will not happen again, it was a perfectly good punishment. Anybody can agree that they would rather do push ups then pay a fine.

I honestly think it is a good idea to make miners do push-ups for a punishment. Reason being is that they are doing physical work, people these days don’t like to do stuff physical. So there’s a better chance that they will think twice before they do it again. But the cops should have taken their names incase they do, do it again.

I think that the push-up punishment was acceptable for the vandals because it was just a mailbox. But, it could be a problem in the future because other kids could go off and vandalize millions of mailboxes and think that the worst that could happen would be that they have to do push-ups. So, the punishment might have served justice the first time but it could be a problem in the future.
November 29, 2012 at 1:44 pm |
Robbie
I think that the push-up punishment was okay for that situation. With a small crime like that it is okay to do because it shows them what they did was wrong without having anything on their record. The punishment would only be okay if it was a small harmless crime that the one the kids were accused of, but if it was a larger crime it shouldn’t be an option.

The idea was a good one, a punishment more fit for the offense. The problem, however, is that push-ups don't discourage the action. If i were considering commiting the offense i would fear going to jail for the act, but wouldn't fear doing push-ups. Jail, however, shouldn't be the punishment for smashing a mailbox.

I think that the punishment was a good idea. The people shouldn’t have been arrested for such a small crime, but they shouldn’t have gotten away with it without punishment. So, doing push ups was a good idea to teach them a lesson.

I think that their punishment was a very good way to handle it. Instead of giving the kids a criminal record, and potentially ruining the chance of them getting a job/career, they handled it by using physical punishment, which was a great way to handle the situation.

Even though the police decided on the punishment themselves, it was a better punishment, the push-ups, for the people who vandalized the mailbox. Arresting them would have seemed like a logical idea, but it would have taken the crime too far. The people who vandalized the mailboxes should have taken that as a warning, though, and if they were to do it again, that they should be arrested instead of expecting them to only have to do push-ups again.
November 29, 2012 at 1:53 pm |

I don’t think that the police officers should’ve decided what the punishment was. Making the teens do push-ups may have been teaching them a lesson, but it should not have been decided that way. The parents should have at least been called.

I think we should have push up punishment. Not only would we be lowering crime rate, we would also be lowering the obesity levels. Talk about killing two birds with one stone. If they happen to be repeat offenders then they will at least be in shape and would eat less food in prison. Now we don't have to spend all that extra tax money on the overweight prison population.
i I believe that the officer was nice to do what he did but people should want to do push up instead of wanting to go to jail

While I feel that the police officers did not have the legal right to do so, I appreciate their attempts to teach the vandals a lesson. Physical punishment is the best way to imprint a message, even if it is morally flawed. And since this did benefit the vandals both mentally and physically, I believe that if we edit (for lack of a better word) the process, this could be a very profitable idea. We will be getting America fit while either promoting exercise to those who appreciate the lesson, or leave a message for those who don't. Overall, I agree.

I think that the push-up punishment was a bad idea. The reason I think it’s a bad idea is because now teenagers or kids will think they can do what they want and think the punishment will be pushups.

I support the push up punishment only because instead of them going to jail and that being on there record forever they just had to do push ups. Doing push ups still probably taught them a lesson in a less scary way just in a really painful way. The cops had the right to make the kids do push ups so now they know if they do it again its their fault because the cops let them off easy the first time but next time its probably jail.

Justice was served. Would you rather go to jail or do 50 pushups? This police officers are trying to punish them without putting them in jail or putting it on the record. They are trying to make them a better future. But in ways i could see how its not fair. What if it was a murder and the made him do 50 or so pushups and let him get away.

Honestly, in my opinion I don't think mailbox vandalism is very serious. A push up punishment? Yeah I support that. After they got caught by the police, the kids should know not to do it anymore.
November 29, 2012 at 2:24 pm |
Haley
I think that the punishment was perfectly fine. It doesn't hurt anybody to do a little work every now and then. After a few times the kids will quit vandalizing so they don't have to do work.
November 29, 2012 at 2:24 pm |
Abby
I don't believe this was right for a cop to do. If they break the law, no matter how old they are, everyone should be punished the same. If we give young people special punishments they will grow up to not take the law very seriously.
November 29, 2012 at 2:24 pm |

I agree with the push ups. Doing push ups is better than going to jail.
November 29, 2012 at 2:24 pm |

I don't think it was right. They should have followed their protocol! I know a cop that didn't follow his protocol and got fired as soon as the higher ups found out. It shouldn't be taken lightly like that. I think the cop was completely in the wrong.
November 29, 2012 at 2:25 pm |

I feel it does not change the way the kids think about how the law works by them doing push ups.
November 29, 2012 at 2:25 pm |

The punishment is defiantly fair! If the kids were behaving they wouldn't have gotten on trouble. They deserved what they got if not more punishment.
November 29, 2012 at 2:25 pm |

Justice wasn't served. The boys got off easy & they should've gotten a worse punishment.
November 29, 2012 at 2:25 pm |

well what teaches kids not to do stupid stuff like that so i do think that is a good punishment
November 29, 2012 at 2:25 pm |

I think the punishment was fair. It is good for young adolescence to get a warning. In a way the push-ups were kind of like a warning in stead of taking them straight to jail, they did push ups.
November 29, 2012 at 2:25 pm |
Racine
A cops job is to enforce the law, and punish those who break it, but there are certain ways to punish. I dont think it was right for the cop to make them do push-ups, yet suspention seems a little drastic. I think a warning would have been enough to change his mind.
November 29, 2012 at 2:25 pm |
Jade
I think that they got what they deserved. The police did the right thing and the teenagers should be grateful that all they had to do was push-ups.
November 29, 2012 at 2:26 pm |
Brianna and Charity
We think that been arrested for a little amount of time because they did do it but for only a few days because their teens but almost twenty so they should probably pay for the mailbox do pushups and go to jail for about two or three days 🙂
November 29, 2012 at 2:26 pm |
Dalton
I belive this punishment is fair because if you where in there shoes you would want to not have to go to juvinile detention center, because its a minor crime they should have to do the amount of pushups for how much money they owe.
November 29, 2012 at 2:26 pm |
Avynn
It wasnt up to the police to decide the punishment. I think that the punishment that the police gave wasnt really a punishment.Doing a push-up doesnt really teach them any thing.I think they should have at least told their parents about it.
November 29, 2012 at 2:26 pm |
Lindsay
I think it was a good idea that they made the kids do push ups instead of going to jail because they were young and never went to jail and doing that punishment they did they will learn that if they did it agian that they would have bigger punishments.
November 29, 2012 at 2:26 pm |
Joseline
push ups are a very difficult thing to do, because the crime wasnt as serious, the punishment was reasonable. i think it was very justified. shouldnt be considered big of a deal as long as they have learned their lesson.

I would have rather done push-ups then go to jail for a mailbox.

Would you like to be behind bars waiting for your mom to call back or do a 100 push ups? It is not a tricky question.;)
November 29, 2012 at 2:29 pm |

I don't think it's okay, because I don't think the group of people that did it would learn their lesson. But i don't think the officer should be suspendid.
November 29, 2012 at 2:29 pm |
Maddie
I think that what they did wasn't worth any charges, and making them do push-ups was probably just to embarrass them. I mean, these aren't hard criminals, they are just kids, who pushed down mailboxes.. If they did something worse, sure.
But if they just gave them a warning, this wouldn't be news. kids get warnings all the time... who does a few push-ups hurt?
People are blowing this whole thing out of proportion.

i think the punishment is pretty cool and if you think otherwise you're lame

Mail boxes are not cheap. I think the people should pay to replace the mailboxes. Doing pushups does not fit the crime.

I think more cops should make kids do push ups if there crime is not that bad.
November 29, 2012 at 2:32 pm |

I think that what those officers did was nice but I don't believe that it was the right choice. If he was trying to teach the kids a lesson then he should have put them in the back of the cop car and drive them down town, then the kids would be scared and not want to do that again. You don't learn your lesson by doing push ups, you learn your lesson by getting a real punishment.
November 29, 2012 at 2:33 pm |
Erin
As much as i agree that the police were wrong about making the kids do push ups as a punishment, i still belive those kids should not have gotten away unpunished, a fine yes. Push ups no.
November 29, 2012 at 2:33 pm |
Sterling
Personally I don't think that this was absurd for a "punishment". But at the same time I do think it is unfair, because other states haven't tried this, at least not that I know of. If this ends up being the consequences for vandalism then I think that it would be cool, you don't pay for vandalism or damage of property.
November 29, 2012 at 2:33 pm |

I believe doing push-ups is indeed fair. Would you rather get push-ups or go to jail? While others believe their own way, sometimes you need to take action for your mistakes.

I dont think that the the boys should did what they did. Well, the officer should put them I Jail. I think at that officer should get punish for what he did to the boys. Officer should not be doing that to them boys
November 29, 2012 at 2:36 pm |
Gloria
I say that the officers did a good/bad thing because you wouldnt wanna go to jail or get a fine. The officers kinda did the boys a favor, but it does depend on what the kids did. If it was a small thing then it would be good punishment. I also say that its not up to the officers to do so. It should be the kids and thier parents picking or deciding their punushment. But its unfair cause not everyone gets to get that punishment.

i agree
November 29, 2012 at 2:37 pm |

I think that they should get a more serious punishment. If I was a cop I would take them to jail to get them scared so they will never vandalize a mail box again.
November 29, 2012 at 2:36 pm |
kelten
i think that this was not the full punishment because they know that they are supposed to and suspension is the right punishment for this although they should have called their parents and fined the teenagers that did it.
November 29, 2012 at 2:36 pm |
nathan
I think it was a fine punishment yes i dont think the officers should have taken the type of punishment into their own hands but i think it was fine because i know being a teen myself i wouldve like to do push ups rather than get a ticket and the push up wouldve been more effective on me because their not fun and doing something physically rather than paying money can make you not want to do it again
November 29, 2012 at 2:37 pm |
Colt
I think that the officers did the right thing. The teens didn't need a jail or money fine. I think that doing push-ups gives some dicipline. If they got caught doing this in the middle of taking the mail they shouldn't be going to jail or getting a fine. What if was only one mailbox they shouldn't have to go to jail for almost stealing 1 mailbox.
November 29, 2012 at 2:39 pm |

i think the cops should get fired or suspened, because they should of gave them a ticket or something. And this punishment is unacceptable hope this dosen't happen in milwaukee,WI

I think push-ups are a good punishment, but in a situation like this they should have got something more disciplinary than just push-ups. You never know tomorrow they can be doing it again and what will they get... more push-ups?

The fact of the matter isn't whether push-ups were a good punishment, it's more along the lines of what they did. They vandalized and push-ups were not a decent punishment. If you mess up you need to realize what you did and pay the time.
November 29, 2012 at 2:48 pm |
Harry
I think they should have got something worse jail it a better way to handle it, Vandalism is a crime and push-ups do not fix the mailbox.
November 29, 2012 at 2:49 pm |

I think it's a good idea to have them do push-ups if they have no previous record, and this is simply a warning.
November 29, 2012 at 2:49 pm |
Seikatsu
If you cause the problem it needs to be fixed, whether you're an officer or not you can't just think push-ups will change their minds. If they get away with it then they'll just go back for more. I think a more proper punishment is in order for the delinquents.
November 29, 2012 at 2:51 pm |

Push-ups are nothing jail would have been what a good cop would have done I'm disappointed in the fact that they think push-ups could fix the problem.
November 29, 2012 at 2:51 pm |

I think that it's fair because the kids weren't adult yets and they made a mistake. Although the cops shouldn't have been doing that, they gave a punishment that the teens deserved. The boys should be thankful because if that hadn't happened, they would've been arrested!
November 29, 2012 at 2:51 pm |

I think push-ups are very hard to do but they still don't take as much time to fix a mailbox
November 29, 2012 at 2:52 pm |

November 29, 2012 at 2:54 pm |

I think that push-ups are good but this isn't a situation to give someone push-ups the officer should have thought twice about what they did as should've the people who got the push-ups.

i think the police could have at least gave them a warning. because it is not right or fair to me. maybe the polices will have mercy and give them another chance. hey carl how are you
November 29, 2012 at 2:58 pm |

Carl its one thing to arrest them but push up's is too much we all see they have done something very wrong but the police shouldn't take things on there own hand

Push-ups are a good punishment for someone in ROTC or a military branch but not in a crime.
November 29, 2012 at 2:58 pm |

I believe this push up punishment is unfair. Everyone has a different way of handling them, maybe in a good or negative way. The police should not have decided this either... it is obviously not the way the law intended people to get punished for their bad deeds. If people only have to do push ups, then wouldn't they think they may be getting off the hook? Push ups are not as bad as a ticket and our easier to handle. Exercise is much different than paying money for what you have done. This is not what everyone is used to and it won't be an effect on the criminal minds.
November 29, 2012 at 2:59 pm |

I believe the push up punishment is fair, because its better than getting arrested. Its also has some people learn there lesson but if it doesn't work the first time then they should get arrested.

I think that the officers did no harm. We are teenager’s and we do crazy things. I think there should not have been charges pressed. I think the push-ups were a perfect idea, and the kids learned their lesson. The officers should not be getting in trouble for this!
November 29, 2012 at 3:04 pm |

I think that justice was served, and that making them do push-ups was a good decision instead of making them go to prison. Also, they are cops they should be able to make a decision on bad behavior instead of wasting time, and instead of making them go to prison in my opinion this was a great idea. I believe that justice was served!
November 29, 2012 at 3:04 pm |

I think that the police officers where actually being easy on them. They could have easily filed a report and the kids could have gotten in more trouble. I believe the police officers should have filed a report and not have taken the law into their own hands

I think the punishment is fair, they wanted do the crime they should recive a punishment...
November 29, 2012 at 3:05 pm |

I think that the push-ups were a good idea for giving a punishment to the boys for a small crime like messing with the mailboxes. If they had stolen a vehicle, a more severe punishment like going to jail or doing community work and paying it back would be necessary. However, I don't think the cops should keep doing this all the time. Although anyone would rather do push-ups them go to jail.
November 29, 2012 at 3:05 pm |

I honestly think the cop should not take problems in there own hands, and it's just wrong for making the boys do push ups. Yes, I understand that they are trying to teach those boys a lesson, but still the cops should have taken the boys to jail.
November 29, 2012 at 3:05 pm |

The Punishment given was a little extreme. I don't know why push-ups can be a punishment.
November 29, 2012 at 3:06 pm |

I oppose the push up punishment because it's such an easy get-away. I mean what boy can't do a few push-ups. The police shouldn't take the laws and twist it's punishments.

I honestly don’t think that the cops should have made those young boys do push ups. Yes, I understand that they were trying to teach the boys a lesson, but I don’t think that they should have taken it into their own hands to handle . The cops should have taken them to DJJ. It should have been up to the judge what their punishment was. I honesty don’t think that it was right that the boys just had to do push ups than they weren’t in any trouble. Those boys probably didn’t learn their lesson . It wasn’t their property to be destroying so they should have got in no trouble for it , they should have been arrested for it.
November 29, 2012 at 3:09 pm |

Though I don’t think that the policemen had the right to decide the punishment, I believe that justice was served. Vandalizing a mailbox isn’t something that should bring someone to jail, but it certainly deserves a punishment, and I feel making the kids do push-ups was good. It taught them a message and they found out the consequences of doing something illegally.
November 29, 2012 at 3:09 pm |
Danielle
I think this punishment is kind of wrong in a way, because even though they’re cops they shouldn’t be able to do that. The cops should of done what any other cop would do and that would be to make an arrest. I don’t understand why they made them do push ups?
November 29, 2012 at 3:10 pm |

I honestly would take the option to do the push ups, But after you think about it, It is reall unfair. Some teens who did crime, had to pay full price for the ticket, and spend time in prison. It is not fair. It is also not fair that they got off the hook so easily. Exercise is much different than paying full price for something they destroyes, which was not theirs.

I think the cop should have arrested the two people. The reason why is because they broke the law they should go to jail it’s as simple as that. I don’t really see how hard it is to understand it they broke someone else’s property it’s a federal offensse and they shouldn’t have had to do push ups on the side of the street, but in there jail cell.
November 29, 2012 at 3:14 pm |

I believe the push-up punishment should be allowed because, its better than going to jail. Also because, you will not have anything on your record when you put in a job application.

I think the officers should have arrested the juveniles because it would have been following procedures.

I think that the push-up punishment is fair. I believe that the people who vandalized the mail box did not deserve to go to jail because it was a small crime. They did not deserve to go to jail. Also with this punishment the people who vandalized the mail box, I do think that this should be a warning to them, and if they do it again they should be arrested.

I agree with this because if they don't then they would not learn a lesion
November 29, 2012 at 5:21 pm |

Older people who are residents get thrown in jail because they vandalize property. These kids are as much citizens as those older people
I disagree
If they let small crimes go like that then there would be a lot more crime going on in a city. I think they should have had them arrested to show them a real life situation if they think they can get away with it once then they will think that again and do another crime
November 30, 2012 at 12:41 am |
Mandy
I think that it was a good idea maybe they will learn there lesson so they dont do it again. However if they do it again there should be more of a punisment then just doing push-ups.
November 29, 2012 at 3:15 pm |
Alexis
I honestly support this, because the officers could have taken care of this in other ways, but this is different instead of taking them to jail they taught them a personal lesson. Yes I understand that they did a crime but who would want that little of a crime on their records forever?
November 29, 2012 at 3:15 pm |

I think that that they should have punished him and it was fair that he had to do pushups instead of going to jail. The people who vandalized the mailbox shouldn’t have gone to jail because it wasn’t that important.

I think that making the kids do pushups, instead of going to jail was brilliant. In my opion it's good exersise and much better then going to jail.

I think that the push-up punishment was a good choice of punishment for those kids but I really don't think that they learned their lesson, though. If they think that they can just get away with what they did, what good does that do? I still hold the opinion that it was a good punishment because it keeps them out of jail and makes them get out and be active, even if it's just for a little bit.

November 29, 2012 at 3:17 pm |

in my opinion doing push ups is way better than getting arrested. and all they did was smash ONE mailbox right? no reason to arrest teenagers for doing that. Maybe a small charge. The policemen probably thought that too. that the kids don't need that big of a punishment. Push ups are way better than being arrested or getting charged. I would rather do push ups than go to jail or get fined. So yes, i think its fair.
November 29, 2012 at 3:18 pm |
Tess
No matter how much punishment is needed, it's not just up to the police officers to dieside there punishment. It was not fair. Its not the way the law says people should be punished for there bad behavior.
November 29, 2012 at 3:18 pm |

I think that the push up punishment is pretty fair. Since they are underage and not mature yet, they shouldn't already have to be treated like an adult who would have to go straight to jail.
November 29, 2012 at 3:18 pm |
Kennedy
I believe the push up punish is a good way for the boys to learn a life lesson . Because even teens shouldn't be able to get away with little things like that are still breaking the law . I also think the officers was trying to punish them without having actual consenquences , i don't think the officer should of been been suspended.
November 29, 2012 at 3:18 pm |

I think it's fair, they shouldn't have been breaking the law. And doing push-ups is way better then going to jail or getting in bigger trouble.

I think that push ups can be a fair punishment if nothing to bad of damage has been done. They should still be getting a better punishment than push ups though.
November 29, 2012 at 3:19 pm |

My opinion is that it is to easy to do push-ups, that they should have to pay for a new mailbox and do sidups push-ups and that should get a point off there drivers licence.
November 29, 2012 at 3:19 pm |
Alexa
I believe that the push up punnishment is unfair because then the teens think they can get away with what they did by doing push ups. I dont think they learn anything from it because they get away with what they did and other teens know they can get away with it just by doing push ups.
November 29, 2012 at 3:20 pm |

November 29, 2012 at 3:24 pm |

The police may have made up their own decision of punishment, but what they did sure is a good idea for kids. The boys that got caught should get a harder punishment if they repeat the vandalism, but for now, push ups are a great way to show kids that what they did was wrong. Even if they didn’t realize what they did was not proper, they will be sore enough to not do it again. I know I would.
November 29, 2012 at 3:24 pm |
Michelle
I don’t support the punishment. I don’t think doing push-ups is a punishment, I think it is only for exercise. Maybe the young people are used to exercise and they didn’t learn their lesson. If I were the police I would make them do another punishment appropriate to what they did to make them learn their lesson.
November 29, 2012 at 3:24 pm |
Mariah
I think that the police where wrong for taking the law in to their own hands, but at least the kids got a punishment. The police should have arrested them and written a report instead of making them do push-ups for a punishment.
November 29, 2012 at 3:25 pm |
Roxanne
I think the push up punishment is fair because they don't want to put kids in jail just because they knocked down mailboxes. Even the mom of one of the juveniles thanked the police officers for doing that to them because it taught them a lesson. I think it is fine as long as they got taught a lesson.
November 29, 2012 at 3:27 pm |
Alaina
The police and the kids should both be arrested because they both did something that they were not supposed to do. The police made a wrong choice because they are not supposed to decide on the final punishment for the kids, but the kids did get what they deserved because they did just as much wrong as the police.
November 29, 2012 at 3:33 pm |
Sarah
I believe that what the cops did was merciful and that they should have thanked the cops for only making them do something as harmless as push-ups. Think of what might have happened to them if the cops hadn't straightened things out.
November 29, 2012 at 3:36 pm |
Justin
I think that the push up punishment was fair in this case since it wasn't a major crime and I think it should only be used on people under 18 since they are to young to go to prison they have some type of consequece for their actions
November 29, 2012 at 3:37 pm |
Isabelle
I think the police officers should of just arrested them. I don't think the push-up punishment was necessarily bad, just not the best way to deal with that situation. The teenagers probably did not learn there lesson.

I think that this push-up punishment isn't a good one. If a lot of people hear about it then people might just go around doing bad things because they no they won't do anything but push-ups as a punishments. It might also influence people to do bad things. Think about it. 😉
November 29, 2012 at 3:51 pm |
Benigno
I think that the push- up punishment is not a good idea because if you just let them do simple push-ups, then they will keep on doing bad things and when they get caught, they will again do push-ups.
November 29, 2012 at 3:52 pm |
Rogue
I think that is a great way instead of making them go to jail plus all they did was vandalize a mailbox they should not go to jail for that.
November 29, 2012 at 3:54 pm |
Ryan
I don't think that they should do pushups. i think they should be suspended for a week, and should pay for all the mailboxes that they damaged, and say sorry to the people that they did it to.
November 29, 2012 at 3:54 pm |
Kate
it would be good if they had to pay for it. great idea!
November 29, 2012 at 5:11 pm |
mac
my name is mac, and i agree about doing push ups for a punishment in fact, I would go and explode a mail box right now just to do push ups
November 29, 2012 at 3:54 pm |
Kate
i dont think thats right. i mean i agreed with the way the oficers handled it but i also think that if people thnk "hey. im going to go smash some mail boxes to get pushups." is maybe part of the reason why they are being considered for suspension. i mean if evry one thinks that then kids/teens might think its ok for them to do it too.
November 29, 2012 at 5:10 pm |
mollyre
I think it was not a good punishment. These kids where breaking the law, I have to do push ups every day just to stay in shape and i haven't done anything wrong. Push-ups just aren't going to teach them a lesson.
November 29, 2012 at 3:56 pm |
REED
I think they should have went to jail and its unfair that they just had to do push ups
November 29, 2012 at 3:57 pm |
Tyler
Its not terrible, its still a punishment. It also depends on the amount of push ups they did,But they still shouldn't have made them do push ups. I believe the cops found it entertaining, but its wrong.
November 29, 2012 at 3:59 pm |
Charlee
I believe that the police officer had them do pushups it was well deserved for the kids. Although the police officer did not do his duty. I think that the fact they just did pushups was a good idea then not going to jail.
November 29, 2012 at 4:00 pm |
Brandon
what the officers did is a OK punishment next time they should get a worse punishment though.
November 29, 2012 at 4:04 pm |

i think the push up punisment was ok and thay should have paid the mail box to
November 29, 2012 at 4:04 pm |

I think the push-up punishment is downright, well, stupid. The police aren't gym teachers. It's not professional.
November 29, 2012 at 4:10 pm |
Jonathan
I think that they deserved it because if not they would keep doing it over again and never suffer the punishments util it is too late and many peoples mail box will be vandalized...!
November 29, 2012 at 4:10 pm |
Joseph
I think the punishment should have been served because it serves right if you're doing something. This taught the teenagers a lesson. Also, it is a smaller punishment then sending them to jail. They only vandalized a mailbox, not anything serious like steal money...
November 29, 2012 at 4:14 pm |
Caitrina
I think that having them do pushups was way better then having them go to jail. This police officer did a good thing and taught them a good lesson for ruining someone elses property. The pushups were scary enough having a police officer telling you to do them. I think that all these kids need to do are pay for the damage and do pushups.
November 29, 2012 at 4:21 pm |
George
This is definitely unfair. One of the amendments stated that there shall not be any cruel or unusual punishments. if this isn't one, its the other. The police officers have their limits, and this isn't withing them.
November 29, 2012 at 4:22 pm |
dale
i think that they should go to jail for what the did
November 29, 2012 at 4:26 pm |

i think that the cops did good because the kids deserved that instead of jail time. Also the kids should have never did it anyway. Last the cops are different in san diego than in road island.
November 29, 2012 at 4:30 pm |
Waleel
i think they should been arrested because what they did was a criminal offense. They should also do community service because they should have never done that in the first place. They should do buy a new mailbox for the mailbox they wrecked.
November 29, 2012 at 4:32 pm |
MARQUISE
I think that the push up punishment is pretty fair. Since they are underage and not mature yet, they shouldn't already have to be treated like an adult. adults would of had to go straight to jail.
November 29, 2012 at 4:32 pm |
chazz
heck yea id rather do push-ups rather than be in jail! what they did wasnt right yea i agree but the cops did the right thing by making them do push-ups.thank you for your time now have a great day
November 29, 2012 at 4:32 pm |
tyler
I AGREE with what the cops did because i think it would cost the state less money and less room being used up in jail for the people who really need to go to jail. I think that it was a good idea but i think that if its for something really small and not a really big deal they should do that but if it for like assault or something like that then they should get arrested. if that happened to me i would thank the cop for not taking me to jail.
November 29, 2012 at 4:32 pm |

I applaud the officer, I belive he did a job well done. One reason is because i am a very active person and strongly belive in physical fitness. Exercise is very healthy for your body.
November 29, 2012 at 4:33 pm |
Rayven
I think its good because, the kids probaly learned their lesson and wont do it ever again and might not be sent to jail and it got them to stay out of jail so that..they wont't go 🙂
November 29, 2012 at 4:34 pm |
sabrinna
I think it was interesting because not a lot of officers are nice. Then again i think they should of at least spent a few days in jail. They should of never did what they did to that mail box and it wasn't even theirs.
November 29, 2012 at 4:34 pm |
Zoey
I think that the push ups were far because they destroyed someone else's property.
November 29, 2012 at 4:37 pm |
Abram
I support it because the police gave a very hard punishment I think that it teached them a lesson. I also oppose it because the police wasn't really doing his job, vandalizing is a very serious matter.
November 29, 2012 at 4:51 pm |
Ethan
I agree because you don't what it on your record and both jail and that do teach them a lesson
November 29, 2012 at 4:55 pm |
Hunter
I think that wasn't a reasonable punishment. Just because they were being juvenile doesn't mean they should get a mild punishment, vandalizing is a crime so the should they should take full responsibility.
November 29, 2012 at 4:59 pm |
Brooke
I believe that the push up punishment if completely fair, at least in my eyes because i would rather do that then go to jail or have my parents find out.
November 29, 2012 at 5:00 pm |

it was wrong of the cop to do but I can see why he did it
November 29, 2012 at 5:00 pm |

I think the officers did the right thing and shouldn't get suspened. If the oficers reported them it could ruin their future.
November 29, 2012 at 5:03 pm |

I think that making him do the push-ups was minimum consequence for hitting down all the mail boxes. I wouldent have gone as far as suspending him, but he needed to now what he did wrong.
November 29, 2012 at 5:06 pm |
Grace
I think that the push up punishment was fair. The police where smart to not arrest the teenagers. If you get arrested, it can go on your reccord and that can lead you to not get into the college you want of get the job you want. All of these bad things could happen just because you knocked down a mailbox.
November 29, 2012 at 5:09 pm |
Bilal
I think that the push up punishment is a good punishment but should only be used against minors for small offenses. For example, the punishment would be fine if a 16 year old does prank calls but if a more serious offense occurs, then the punishment should also be more serious..
November 29, 2012 at 5:14 pm |
Dominick
I think this is a completely fair punishment. The reason why is that it is much easier than going to jail for a minor crime. And it also is fair because it is not going on his criminal record. So it wont affect his chances of get a job or getting into collage.
November 29, 2012 at 5:15 pm |
Abi
if they make them do push ups which only well make them stronger. Also easer to vandalizing other thing with more power and stretgh. I vote NOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
November 29, 2012 at 5:16 pm |
Eric
I think it great because you don't have to go to jail and it just wasting jail cells and it a great punishment
November 29, 2012 at 5:21 pm |
Jason
I personally think they should not make them do pushups because they might be too strict. Suspending them is not a punishment to a teen it is a freedom to them. They should have them do a few hours of community service instead.
November 29, 2012 at 5:27 pm |
Ben
I think the cops were okay in making the young teens do pushups. I don't think the police should get in trouble for it. The teens should be thankful to not have a police report and/ or suspension even if they don't like it.
November 29, 2012 at 5:30 pm |
kyle
I think they should of took them to jai or the station because they are stealing or destroying other people's property.
Another thought is they should've had community service.
November 29, 2012 at 5:31 pm |
Alex
I personally think that would be a good punishment, but it's also not right to not do your job right.
November 29, 2012 at 5:32 pm |

even though its a little strange I hate push ups but its better then being arestied
November 29, 2012 at 5:34 pm |
Breaze
I believe that since they had vandalized someone else's property that they should have a punishment of some sort, and the push-up punishment wont ruin the kids reputation but it will also help teach them that vandalizium is bad.
November 29, 2012 at 5:35 pm |
Cheyenne
I don't think the cop should get in trouble because it wasn't a bad judgement. It's kids being kids and no one got hurt.
November 29, 2012 at 5:36 pm |

I think they shouldn't have done that but they probably needed the exsersize.

I Think Its A Good Idea (:

I think it was a fair punishment. At least they didn't get arrested. It could have been a lot worse. I don't think the police officers should be suspended.
November 29, 2012 at 5:38 pm |
Brian
I think this kind of punishment wasn't effective enough to stop them in the future. They need to know the consequences of their actions, and should walk away changed, not with sore arms.
November 29, 2012 at 5:39 pm |
Katherine
I think it's a good idea for them to do push ups because a 15 year old is too young be arrested, but I think they should be in court.
November 29, 2012 at 5:42 pm |
Josh
I think push ups are better than getting charged or having a record. It's the police officers job to enforse the law but the way they took it in their hand was harmless.
November 29, 2012 at 5:43 pm |
Felicia
They should of been more respectful. If they did that to a lot of people, they should of paid a lot of money. They should apolgize and pay more money. doing push ups is not justice. It's more like working out.
November 29, 2012 at 5:43 pm |
Edwin
I think they did a good thing by making them do push-ups instead of arresting them or charging them and giving them a bad record.
November 29, 2012 at 5:45 pm |

I think the cops did this just right. Why would they waste their time on teens when they have bigger crimes going on out in the world.
November 29, 2012 at 5:47 pm |

I think it was good but then again they should've went to jail because that is other people's mailboxes.
November 29, 2012 at 5:48 pm |

Mail boxes actually belong to either the state or the government for some reason
December 1, 2012 at 12:24 am |

I think they learned their lesson by doing push-ups so then they won't to it again. Also, I would not do that after doing push-ups on the side of the road. They also might be made fun of if their friends saw them doing that.
November 29, 2012 at 5:50 pm |
Zach
I think the cops making kids do push-ups instead of going through with filing a report is a great idea for punishment. It would embarrass them enough so they might not do it again. I think the cops shouldn't get in trouble.
November 29, 2012 at 5:50 pm |
Katie
I would rather do push-ups than get arrested because it wouldn't be on a juvilnelle record. Yes, the cops should get in trouble because the judge makes the decision on what happens to the kids.
November 29, 2012 at 5:54 pm |
sue
the officers should not be punished. The kids were vandalizing mailboxes. they should be glad they did not get arrested and only had to do push-ups.
November 29, 2012 at 5:56 pm |
Bella
I believe that it was right for the police to make them do push-ups. The push-ups will teach these young citizens to behave properly and to follow the law. The police officers should not get into trouble for making them do the push-ups, for they were just showing that when you do something wrong that they will have to suffer the consquences.
November 29, 2012 at 5:57 pm |
Edwin
I thought that the police did a rigth thing, because the teenagers that did this act are too young to get other punishments.
November 29, 2012 at 5:57 pm |
Jerome
I think that the cops should be in trouble because they caught them and should be putting them in jail. The cops forced the kids to do push-ups because the cops probably didn't want to write a report.
November 29, 2012 at 5:57 pm |
Po'okerpo't
This is an example of a cruel and unusual punishment, which is forbidden in constitution. The police are given rules of how to make arrests, they have to follow them.
November 29, 2012 at 5:59 pm |
Gisel
I do not think this cops showed justice for one if they did something bad they should of took those people to jail not just make do push ups witch will proddly not make them learn anything and also if they were planning to do something bad they could've give them a warning
November 29, 2012 at 5:59 pm |
Kris
The young people who vandalized a mail-box should not have done roadside pushups. They should have gotten arrested or fined. Push-ups for vandalizing mail boxes is not acceptable. The police officers should have made an arrest or they should paid a fine. This is not a way to punish people.
November 29, 2012 at 6:03 pm |
Chris
I think it is not good idea. There are rules and laws that ancestors made and we should follow, unless we think it wrong, but we aren't, so it is not necessary to punish in that way.
November 29, 2012 at 6:06 pm |
Isaac
I think it's more fair to make the kids do push ups than take them to jail, because vandalizing a mailbox by just hitting it with a hammer or bat or something shouldn't be a big enough crime to go to jail, but if they do something like put a bunch of Firecrackers in it,or set it on fire, it should be a fair enough punishment to send them to jail.
November 29, 2012 at 6:08 pm |
Edward
The teenagers who vandalized the postbox was just 18 years old. In that age, they should study. But, by vandalizing the mail box should get punished. But I think giving pushups for a teenager 18 years old for a punishment was better than arresting them.
November 29, 2012 at 6:09 pm |
Darcy
I support the push up punishment. Why should they go to jail for vandalizing a mailbox? It is good exercise and I think they learned their lesson. I think that if it was a bigger crime they would have to go to jail.
November 29, 2012 at 6:13 pm |
Gabriel
i do not think it was a good idea ti make them do push-ups instead of arresting them. Not arresting them and letting them off the hook will not teach them a lesson because they can still commit crimes while being free.
November 29, 2012 at 6:15 pm |
Jessica
I think it was a good punishment as long as they did an appropriate punishment amount of push-ups. For example if it cost 100 dollars to fix it they should have to do 100 push-ups.
November 29, 2012 at 6:17 pm |
Jacob
I agree with Brian. Simply put, these kids needed to be disciplined for their actions. The effects of this sort of punishment on the vandals might even teach them that they can get away with similar acts in the future.
November 29, 2012 at 6:19 pm |
Cameron
When the police officers took the matter in their own hands it was doing wrong. But I don't think they should be suspended for making people who still have a family and people that love them go to jail when all they did is make a stupid mistake. It was a life lesson and they hopefully learned that they can't get away with breaking the law. Maybe if it was something more serious I could see why the officers should be suspended. They did wright.
November 29, 2012 at 6:20 pm |

I think the officers let the teens off easy, because there would have been serious punishiment. In my opinon pushups are a punishment for coaches not officers
Cameron
November 29, 2012 at 6:21 pm |
Cooper
I think it is a good punishment because it teaches kids that instead of going to jail they just have to disciplinary work. Also I think that it is basically a get out of jail free card. Literally. This will teach kids not to do bad things anymore because nobody likes pushups, especially when you are told to do them by a police officer.
November 29, 2012 at 6:22 pm |

Even though the police meant good, they should have had a harsher punishment.
November 29, 2012 at 6:39 pm |

Whatever the officers did shouldn't get them in trouble, because I think one of them officers have a child and I think he don’t want his child to go to jail instead of push-ups. I don't think the police officers should be suspended.
November 29, 2012 at 6:41 pm |

I think that the push-ups were a good idea because it gives the kids a second chance while still giving them a punishment to tell them not to do it.
November 29, 2012 at 6:42 pm |

I don't think that push ups were the right punishment because what does exercise have to do with vandalizing a mailbox and besides that the police don't decide that punishment
November 29, 2012 at 6:43 pm |

I think any kid would take push-ups over being arrested any day , the police just did what they felt was right so there for i don't think they should be suspended
November 29, 2012 at 6:43 pm |

I do support this punishment because this is how they learn from their mistakes so they will remember never to do that againi still do not under stand why they vandilized a mailbox i will remember this day when im abvout to make a poor ;( choice when i grow up.
November 29, 2012 at 6:44 pm |

Personally, I don't think the punishment was harsh enough, but it got the job done and the vandals shouldn't be expecting to have as much luck a second time around.
November 29, 2012 at 6:46 pm |

I am totally for that punishment. I more see it as a warning that the police gave them with only some exercise. It's only a few push ups, it is fine with me
November 29, 2012 at 6:48 pm |

I support the push up punishment because it was a discipline that would not interfere with there criminal record. Also the punishment was immediate, reinforcing that what they did was wrong.
November 29, 2012 at 6:50 pm |

I think it is a fair punishment because it is better to do push-ups then going to jail. I also don't think the officers shouldn't get suspened!

I think they shouldn't have given them a physical punishment, they should have just arrested them and filed a report. Going to jail is much worse than push ups and that's what they deserve, jail time.
November 29, 2012 at 6:54 pm |
Meaghan
I think the police officers did the right thing punishing them, but I don't think that was the right punishment. I think the teenagers deserved something more harsh. (If you know what I mean.)
November 29, 2012 at 6:58 pm |

I don't support this because these teens are getting humiliated. Although these teens shouldn't be vandalizing mail boxes grow up.
November 29, 2012 at 7:03 pm |

The officer did do wrong, but the teens most likely learned their lesson. If they did not learn their lesson they would do wrong agian then they would go to jail. Plus there has to be a starting point for everything, this could be one of them.So we need to prevent them from doing wrong.
November 29, 2012 at 7:04 pm |

that makes no sense

The police officers shouldn't decide the punishment. Even though the police officers wanted to teach the teenagers a lesson; they should of left it to the court to decide the punishment or contact with teenagers parents about and let know what happened.
November 29, 2012 at 7:13 pm |

The officer does not have that kind of say in a punishment, they should of went to jail. Push ups wont teach them what is right and what is wrong.
November 29, 2012 at 8:59 pm |

The police officer has no right to decide the punishment, like what Christy said. But I personally I think doing pushups, then legally arresting them would've been fine.
November 29, 2012 at 9:01 pm |

I think that the cop was wrong and should have handled this differently putting kids through physical punishment should be considered cruel an unusual
November 29, 2012 at 9:55 pm |

Officers shouldn't punish these kids with physical activity, it was wrong. The officers should of done their job and disciplined them the right way, and teaching them their lesson for good.

It was not fair, or right for them to be forced to do this. I do agree with the mother though, it showed them to never pull a stunt like that again.
November 30, 2012 at 7:09 am |

I do not support this act because it isn't the officers job to handle that. I know that smashing mailboxes is wrong, but they should be suspended.
November 30, 2012 at 8:12 am |
Mrs. Snider's Periwinkle Class
Having the offenders perform push ups seems a just punishment. Keeping minor offenses out of the court system helps reduce taxes, court time and also helps the future of the individuals involved. A minor mistake in youth can affect their entire lives. Physical labor never hurt anyone, maybe a few more push ups will make them think before vandalizing next time.
November 30, 2012 at 11:15 am |

The officers did wrong they should of arrested them and not made them do push-ups that's just wrong
November 30, 2012 at 4:03 pm |

Police officers deciding on a punishment was unfair. They weren't qualified to do that, however, they could have written fines for the teens.
November 30, 2012 at 4:28 pm |
Amara
I oppose it because I think the police are not the teenager's parents. They need to do what they do every other time with criminals. They can't just make criminals do push ups whenever they feel like it. But its done and over with and i can't do anything about it.
November 30, 2012 at 5:25 pm |

I don't support this. I think that the punishment was not correct. Push-ups have nothing to do with vandalizing something.
November 30, 2012 at 7:03 pm |

thats not fair to people that have done the same thing and have gotten arrested and sentenced to a jail term but push up's is a bad choice the people who made them do the push up's should be fired from there jobs. they did a bad thing because they might do it again.
November 30, 2012 at 7:34 pm |

I think the officer was trying to do good by the kids. Obviously he should've stood by the law, but he was trying to teach them a lesson without sending them to jail. I think he wasn't entirely wrong to make them do push-ups, and he shouldn't be suspended because of it.
December 1, 2012 at 12:10 am |

I think it was nice of the officers to not make the boys go 'downtown" but I still think the officers should have done their jobs and punished the boys more "traditionally".

Well if you go to jail or something you won't get a punishment this bad. And anyways he has learned the lesson he had to. Because push-ups are much worse than a day or two in jail!!!!!!!!1
December 1, 2012 at 9:54 am |
Lucy
I think the officer considered teens' fault as no big crime enough to go to jail.
Push-up in the load is more lighter punishment than being arrested.
But If same teens did something wrong again, they would have to be punished by regulations.
December 1, 2012 at 10:58 am |

The officers should've brought the teens to jail, but the push ups probably did teach them a lesson. If they do it again, they should go to jail.

I think that the officer was right to make those kids do push ups. Just because they did some damage to a mailbox doesn't mean they have to go to jail. I think that the officer was really smart. But still, what they did was still wrong.

I think it was ok what the police did because if that was me i would rather do push ups than go to jail. But at the same time they did do wrong, those kids must have been really humiliated and felt bad. As long in the end they learned thier lesson it was worth it.

okay come on its just push ups its not going to kill you. look at it like this its better then going to jail.
December 1, 2012 at 6:34 pm |

I think the push ups weren't bad...it was that they made the punishment without the law involved...not that the push ups were a prob...I think it's great
We need to start doing something our systems are not working maybe this will help we have issues with people being repeat offenders where I am from go to jail for three mounths get out steal over 7000 thousand dollars get caught go back to jail get out do it all over again its not working we protect people who.don't abide by the law better than the people who do
December 1, 2012 at 10:14 pm |
Hawk
I say the kids deserved to do such a numerous amount of push-ups (maybe even a few more would not kill them). For starters, they'll get their exercise and lose some weight for the day ahead of them. Additionally, it will help them remember not to vandalize other folk's mailboxes and disturb another person's privacy. I would be beating em' with the mailbox itself they tried invade.
December 2, 2012 at 5:28 am |

I don't agree with what the officers did because if they were causing trouble and destroying objects that weren't their's, then they should do a service project or an act of kindness for them.
December 2, 2012 at 9:30 am |
shaeleigh
i support this punishment.Even if you don't do it right, you still need to do push-ups. Everyone can do it differently than others. Everyone needs to know the consequences of their actions and how they effect other people.
December 2, 2012 at 9:33 am |

Well they are only teenagers but I still they should go to jail.

Giving the teens push-ups were wrong. This will only encourage them to do it more because they got off with a light statement. Also, push-ups make you stronger. We don't want these teens getting stronger. It will lead to disaster.

I think it was a good idea. Although, you should never vandalize anything, even a mailbox, would you put someone in jail for that? By making them do push-ups it was the officer's way of letting them off with a warning.

I believe justice was served. If criminals only had to pay fines and go to jail then what's all that compared to some push ups? People are just over reacting to something as small as some push ups. We've all done them before.

Oh, so they'll know never to do it again because they had to do push-ups. No. They aren't going to learn their lesson from that, come on, this is why we have Juvi!

I think that the police did well in choosing a punishment. I can see the other sides’ views, and the feelings and opinions they may have had, but it was a reasonable, if not outright smart way to deal with these teenagers. Sometimes I think that the law goes too hard with punishing teens, they need to show them that what they did was wrong, but they don’t need to brand them as a criminal for life. These cops saw that the deeds these teenagers were doing were wrong, but instead of acting as if the kids were full-fledged criminals they treated the teens like the misguided young people they were. They accused them, and punished them in a logical way, and hopefully the teens will remember that, but they did not go too far and forget that these were still kids.

I think that it is a very good punishment because in the first place they shouldn't be doing that plus, for them it is a smaller punishment then going to jail.

I think that the police should have arrested the teens and had them face punishment by the judicial system; they vandalized a mailbox and should face the consequences for doing so. Now don’t get me wrong, I think that having the teens do push-ups was a good idea I just don’t think that the cops had the power to choose the punishment, a judge does. I don’t think that the cops should get in trouble for administrating the punishment; they just should not do it again. I think making the teens do push-ups was a good idea but the cops should not have decided on the punishment without legal permission.
December 2, 2012 at 9:31 pm |
Matt
I don't think the police should've made of them do push ups on the side of the road because they should make sure people follow the rules and not make up there own punishments. The town should have a vote on what should be done when kids break the law and vandelize property. Maybe they should pay to have what they broke fixed or fix it themselves if the town votes that way.

I think it wasn't so bad the officer made those kids do push-ups. I know it wasn't necessary but at least it taught them a lesson.

Absolutely great punishment however it is up to a judge not police officers. If we start allowing police to hand out punishments we undermine the whole judicial system.

The US Army uses pushups for punishment. If it is acceptable for the armed forces then why not for some kids causing problems?

i do agree with push ups punishment and don't agree the reason why i agree is because if people or teens get in a fight or steal. officers should make them do push ups and take them to jail what ever they did , and the reason i don't agree is because officers should take them to jail cause what they did steal they steal, fight.

I don't think it is a bad thing to do as long as the officers had the right to tell them to do push-ups. And it also depends on the crime they committed whether or not they should get arrested.

i think it is a great idea because some teens just don't listen and if you give them push ups it will hurt a lot if you do a lot and your not even touching them so it like your spanking them with a invisible whip for being bad and if there smart there listen

I don't think kids or adults should have to do push ups as there punishments i hate to see people go to jail but alot of people cant even do push ups what are you going to make a group of 5 do push ups when only 2 of them can so you send the other 3 to jail
December 3, 2012 at 12:16 pm |

I think it was right for them to give them this punishment. Any other time it would have been wrong of them. It all depends on the situation. Had it been that they were just talking during class it would have been wrong of them to do so. So i guess you can say i am for it but in many ways against it as well.

The officers didn't really have the authority to punish them but it wasn't really a punishment at all. I mean push ups? They're easy and people do push ups all the time. They deserve some more kind of punishment for vandalizing property. Its just encouraging them to do it again.

I believe push ups shouldn't be a punishment. I meant, if the 'crime' is vandalizing or hurting someone or something along those lines, something a little more effect then making kids do push ups should be a punishment.

I think that doing push-ups for a punishment doesn't teach the person a lesson. Push-ups are more for a workout or P.E., not a punishment for a crime. Going to jail will teach them a lesson that what they did was wrong.

I don't think that was a good punishment. If they only had to do push ups some might say, " Hey we can get away with it because all we'll have to do is push ups!" If people are really doing something wrong they should be punished. And not with a few simple push ups.
December 3, 2012 at 4:40 pm |
Kincaid
The crime wasn't that bad so I think that they shouldn't have to go to jail but the push-ups weren't the best punishment because they got off easy and they might do it again.
Take a study break and find out what's filling the notebook of CNN Student News anchor Carl Azuz. We love your comments. Remember, keep them on topic and only use your first name.
As much as a punishment was needed, it wasnt up to the police officers themselves to decide the punishment. No matter the level of severity of the crime, the police officers should not decide the punishment. They aren't qualified to do so legally.
God would give them a second chance now who agrees.
Although they should not have done that, I think that this will teach them a lesson on not to vandalize others property
I think they should have went to jail
why should they go to jail. I think they should have a second chance.Thats what god would do.
they should have turned them to SALT THAT is what God DID DO just for looking back Gavin
push ups come on make them fix the mail box mow the lawn for a year clean off the snow in the winter clean the gutters OR GO TO JAIL
push ups
But would that have gotten your mail boxes back???
If i killed your mom would me going to jail bring your mom back? No, but it is the Justice of things.
I agree its not fair.
I think that your wrong kam, yes they probably shouldn't have decided it but kids who are in the video are probably 16,17
I mean would YOU want to go to jail for just vandalizing some mailboxes, so I think that push-ups are a affair punishment
jail not gail
I think that if these guys are going to do something like vandalizing someone else's property, then they should automatically go to jail for breaking the law. The punishment for doing something against the law is jail. Having to do push-ups as a punishment is for gym class.
They deserved it and besides the crime wasnt severe and neither was the punishment...nothing wrong with the oldschool DROP AND GIVE ME TWENTY!!!! 😀 haha
In our Tae-Kwon-Do school we use push-ups as a punishment so I think that is perfectly fin to give push-ups as a punishment. Though it was not right for the police to give a punishment the vandals deserved it in a way.
I think that it was wrong to force the boy to do push ups I would have just reported it.
Its good for the officers to attempt to teach the students but he took it too far. The officer should had never put the situation in to his own hands.
It wasn't very smart for the police to do that. I mean, it's teenagers.. a few little push-ups aren't going to teach them anything. They will just laugh it off and go do the next dumb thing they have planned.
Ya
I believe the push up punishment was fair. They done something wrong they should be punished for it. Would you rather do push ups or go to jail? It could of been a lot worse they are just lucking enough they didn't mess with the wrong people!
I believe that there was a clear violation of the 8th amendment here, which states that "There will be no Cruel and unusual punishments inflicted." However, if the law enforcement officials felt it was necessary for safety so it wouldn't happen again, then they have an obligation to put safety before anything else.
hey rather do push-ups, and not go to juvy.
Great idea and saves court time and nothing being done anyway.
From Mr. Mike's Juvenile Detention Center ( Social Studies class),
Mr. Mikes Juvenile Detention Class believes the Police officers let the Delinquents off with a good warning oppose to arresting them on the spot!
From us teenagers in jail 🙂
it wasnt up to the police officers themselves to decide the punishment. the police officers should not decide the punishment, therefore, they aren't qualified to do so legally.
I think that the push-up punishment was unorthodox and was ok for the situation but they should be put on record. If the situation was more serious then they should not have used push-ups to punish the vandals.
I disagree with the push up punishment. The kids should have been arrested properly for their vandalism. Punishing them with push ups was not professional. The police should have punished them properly because this shows police can make up their own punishments. This should have been a decision by a judge.
I'd rather do push-ups than pay a fine. 100 push-ups = $100
I think it's both fair and unfair. Fair, because my coaches make me do push ups if I'm late for practice, but unfair because those officers don't have actual authority over those kids, like parents and coaches do. I like the show of authority but not the overstepping of boundaries on the cops' part.
I agree with this punishment but should not be inforced by the officers.
arrest them not no pushups!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree dude!
I think that people that do trouble should pay for what they do . I think the they should go to jail.e
I think they should pay for what the did. They should go to jail.
I think that the push-up punishment is good because it teaches those punks who vandalized that mailbox a lesson.
I think they should pay for what they did. They should go to jail.
Making kids do push ups is harmless. Although more could’ve been done to the young people to ensure that it will not happen again, it was a perfectly good punishment. Anybody can agree that they would rather do push ups then pay a fine.
Either my phone is messing up the post names or there are a whole lot of austins responding today besides myself
I support what the cops did because it’s better than going to jail or getting it put on your permanent record.
I think it is wrong.
i I believe that the officer was nice to do what he did but people should want to do push up instead of wanting to go to jail
II think that it was a good punishment for the teenagers. The punishment most likely taught them a lesson not to do things even when people aren't watching.
I definitely support the push up punishment the cops did in Rhode Island. The kids should not get arrested for such a small crime, but at the same time should not get away with it. I think doing the roadside push up’s gave them a lesson, but not such a harsh lesson.
I think it was fair because it wasnt that serious
I believe that the punishment for people who are caught by police men should have their punishment be not as the police want it, but as the mayor or person in charge wants it.
I am all for the push-up punishment. But I feel that the officers should have gotten permission from the teens parents first
i think you should not be able to do that to the kids
Even though the police of North Providence held consequential punishment against vandalism, they should not have come up with the idea of forcing people to do roadside push-ups. I don’t believe it was right for them to come up with this idea without confronting other law enforcers.
Its better than going to jail and getting a charge so i support it.
I think the punishment was unfair and weird, but at least it's better than going to jail.
iI think the punishment the officers had done was fair because its better than having to pay for the damages! Plus CNN Student News Rocks!!!!!!!!!
ii think the service was served becouse the ploice gave them a chance than reporting them
I believe that the punishment was fair because it is better for the m to do push ups rather than going to jail, and also it give them another chance.
I think it was fair because this give those young adults another chance to live their lives with no change other than that they had to do push-ups, but other than that i think it was a good punishment and that they should be thankful!!
II think it is fair. instead of taking them to jail they made them do push ups and they learned there lesson.
i i think that it i good punishment because its not that worth going to court and jail for a mailbox they can just do the push ups and pay for the mailbox
i think they should have went to jail
I think it was a good idea for something that wasn't so bad. Going to jail for something small is just ridiculous.
I I think it was fair because everybody makes mistakes .
I support the punishment, even though I don't like doing push-ups I will take that punishment over jail any day.
I support this punishment completely; these kids could have gone to jail but the police had them do pushups instead. Maybe they shouldn’t have taken the punishment into their own hands but it’s still better than going to jail.
they should go to jail
I think it was fair. You shouldn't be sent to prison for smashing up a mailbox. I think they should pay for the mailbox too.
I I think that the police made a unique decision. Having the kids do push ups rather than arresting them. Its a good idea and i think those children have learned their lesson because next time their might be worser consequences.
Yes it was fair because what they did was wrong but they didn't need to go to jail but it was a mental and physical thing by doing push ups but they needed to learn in a other way then going to jail and that is what the police did so yes it was a good idea.
I think they should of not of have to do push ups they should have just charged them.
I think it was right because they needed a punishment and they didn't have to go to jail. They should have to pay for the mailbox though.
yes its fair because he given them a chance because you don't have to pay money and the kids get taught a lesson on not to mess with some one else's property.
It is a very bad punishment as one of them could've had a disease like athsma and gotten very hurt
I don't think they should make them do push ups because you are police officers not gym instructors
I It Was A Great Idea For Them To Give The Opportunity To Give Them The Push Up For Punishment Instead Of Taking Them To jail Cause Everyone Should Have Some Chance In To Fixing The Problem They Have Done.
I think that they have learned their lesson and IF they did it again, the number might just be doubled
II Think the police did good, but if I was the the police i would scare them a little by telling the teens they were going to jail.
I think it is a great thing that the police did that instead of take them away. Its a physical and a mental way to punish them for what they did.
I think that they shouldn't go to jail and they should pay for the mailboxes. They should do community work. The kids should have to go to jail for a few weeks.
I think they should have went to jail because I try to do push ups every day so it would be very easy for me and it is not hard to practice push ups
I don't think making teenage boys do push-ups for destroying a mailbox is the right thing to do.The officers should of made there punishment a bit more reasonable. I don't think the teenagers will Learn much from this.
Yes I do think is a that it was a fair thing to do. I think it was a fair thing to do because sometimes it is very hard to do push-ups. Even if it was a very young person they could probably learn a lesson.
I think that it was a good idea to make them do push-ups instead of sending them to jail. Them boys deserved it and it was their fault, if they didn't want to do that they should not have touched anything. I would not want to go to jail or do push-ups but I'd rather do push-ups so I think the police did a good thing.
I think that the police officers did the wright thing . The kids who did that payed their price, but they didn't have to be suspended. At least the didn't go to jail.
Honestly , i think the police officers made a fair decision by making the teenagers do push-ups because they shouldn't get arrested just for vandalizing. Although, they should apologize.
I honestly think it is a good idea to make minors do push-ups for a punishment. Reason being, is that they are doing physical work. People these days don’t like to do physical activity. So, there’s a better chance that they will think twice before they do it again. But, the cops should have taken their names in case they do it again.
I think it is wrong to make them do push-ups. Because if the cops get suspended the kid will have to go jail. They sould think of a better way to solve the problem
I think it was a bad idea because they didn't learn anything and will probably go back to what they were doing.
I think they should go to jail how would you like it if someone did it to you it was not enough.
what i think about this is that it is FAIR. cause the deserve to go to jail and get in trouble. cause why would you do that to somebody cause they just lost a life that they could have had. but some people just don"t care. and i think it would be fair for them to get in trouble and stay in there for along time that is what i think about this
I think that punishment is not good because they had no business knocking down people's mail boxes if it isn't their's.
I believe that this punishment was not as bad as people think it is. It's a good way to punish them instead of taking them in because you are giving them a chance to realize what they have done without possibly ruining a job oppurtunity with the record of vandalism.
YES!!!!!! It is fair because when you put them in jail and they stay there for along time they are going to get use to that environment thats all they going to know
I totally support what to police did to those kids because it is teaching them a lesson about destroying another ones property. If they don’t like push ups they won’t do it again.
I definetly support this because if I got caught doing something like this,I would rather do push ups instead of having to be fined or go to jail.
I think push ups would be better than being arrested. If you go to jail, then you have to push ups and you lose your freedom.
I think it's far in ways but then again why make them do push-ups I think they should had payed for a new mailbox !!!
Im glad the cops made them do push ups. They also should have put them in jail. I would have enjoyed the push ups.
I support this idea because I rather do push-ups then get a fine.
But the cops did take over their ability of the law.
I think the push up punishment was fair. The officers took into consideration that they were teenagers and they wanted to teach them a lesson. Instead of sending them to jail, they thought the push ups would count as a warning and teach them a lesson.
I think the push-up punishment was way out of line for what those kids did
I think it was because it is nicer than being arrested.
I think that the officers did the right thing by making these teens do pushups, its better the the alternative which is charging these teens and possibly ruining there chances of getting into a good collage and giving them a record i feel this teaches the teens a lesson however i feel that the law should not be taken into a certain persons hand with that being said these cops did what they thought was right and should not be punished
Honestly, in my opinion I don't think mailbox vandalism is very serious. A push up punishment? Yeah I support that. After they got caught by the police, the kids should know not to do it anymore.
I think that the punishment was perfectly fine. It doesn't hurt anybody to do a little work every now and then. After a few times the kids will quit vandalizing so they don't have to do work.
I don't believe this was right for a cop to do. If they break the law, no matter how old they are, everyone should be punished the same. If we give young people special punishments they will grow up to not take the law very seriously.
I agree with the push ups. Doing push ups is better than going to jail.
I don't think it was right. They should have followed their protocol! I know a cop that didn't follow his protocol and got fired as soon as the higher ups found out. It shouldn't be taken lightly like that. I think the cop was completely in the wrong.
I feel it does not change the way the kids think about how the law works by them doing push ups.
The punishment is defiantly fair! If the kids were behaving they wouldn't have gotten on trouble. They deserved what they got if not more punishment.
Justice wasn't served. The boys got off easy & they should've gotten a worse punishment.
well what teaches kids not to do stupid stuff like that so i do think that is a good punishment
I think the punishment was fair. It is good for young adolescence to get a warning. In a way the push-ups were kind of like a warning in stead of taking them straight to jail, they did push ups.
A cops job is to enforce the law, and punish those who break it, but there are certain ways to punish. I dont think it was right for the cop to make them do push-ups, yet suspention seems a little drastic. I think a warning would have been enough to change his mind.
I think that they got what they deserved. The police did the right thing and the teenagers should be grateful that all they had to do was push-ups.
We think that been arrested for a little amount of time because they did do it but for only a few days because their teens but almost twenty so they should probably pay for the mailbox do pushups and go to jail for about two or three days 🙂
I belive this punishment is fair because if you where in there shoes you would want to not have to go to juvinile detention center, because its a minor crime they should have to do the amount of pushups for how much money they owe.
It wasnt up to the police to decide the punishment. I think that the punishment that the police gave wasnt really a punishment.Doing a push-up doesnt really teach them any thing.I think they should have at least told their parents about it.
I think it was a good idea that they made the kids do push ups instead of going to jail because they were young and never went to jail and doing that punishment they did they will learn that if they did it agian that they would have bigger punishments.
push ups are a very difficult thing to do, because the crime wasnt as serious, the punishment was reasonable. i think it was very justified. shouldnt be considered big of a deal as long as they have learned their lesson.
I would have rather done push-ups then go to jail for a mailbox.
i think justice is served.
Would you like to be behind bars waiting for your mom to call back or do a 100 push ups? It is not a tricky question.;)
I don't think it's okay, because I don't think the group of people that did it would learn their lesson. But i don't think the officer should be suspendid.
I think that they shod put them in jail and do push ups for how long they got expelled.
I mean people need to learn one way or the other and I think this is the perfect way to do it.......As long as it teaches a lesson I'd go for it.
Mail boxes are not cheap. I think the people should pay to replace the mailboxes. Doing pushups does not fit the crime.
I think more cops should make kids do push ups if there crime is not that bad.
As much as i agree that the police were wrong about making the kids do push ups as a punishment, i still belive those kids should not have gotten away unpunished, a fine yes. Push ups no.
Personally I don't think that this was absurd for a "punishment". But at the same time I do think it is unfair, because other states haven't tried this, at least not that I know of. If this ends up being the consequences for vandalism then I think that it would be cool, you don't pay for vandalism or damage of property.
we think that they should have been arrested for a little amount of time because they did do it so they should go to jail but only for a short amount of time because they are teens but almost twenty so they should probably pay for the mailbox do pushups and go to jail for for one or two days. 🙂
I thank you should have arrested instead of making them do pushups you should Have made them do community service for 3 months.
But its unfair cause not everyone gets to get that punishment.
i agree
I think that they should get a more serious punishment. If I was a cop I would take them to jail to get them scared so they will never vandalize a mail box again.
i think that this was not the full punishment because they know that they are supposed to and suspension is the right punishment for this although they should have called their parents and fined the teenagers that did it.
I think that the officers did the right thing. The teens didn't need a jail or money fine. I think that doing push-ups gives some dicipline. If they got caught doing this in the middle of taking the mail they shouldn't be going to jail or getting a fine. What if was only one mailbox they shouldn't have to go to jail for almost stealing 1 mailbox.
i think the cops should get fired or suspened, because they should of gave them a ticket or something. And this punishment is unacceptable hope this dosen't happen in milwaukee,WI
I thank it is a bad idea to make someone do pushups.I thank they should go to jail.
I like that idea but i would not think it would work everytime. It would be smart to do it once in a while.
I think push-ups are a good punishment, but in a situation like this they should have got something more disciplinary than just push-ups. You never know tomorrow they can be doing it again and what will they get... more push-ups?
The push-ups are a good punishment but I don't think it's right to make them do it
I think it was a good thing for the police to make the kids do push ups because it us good exercise. It's better than going to jail.
The fact of the matter isn't whether push-ups were a good punishment, it's more along the lines of what they did. They vandalized and push-ups were not a decent punishment. If you mess up you need to realize what you did and pay the time.
I think they should have got something worse jail it a better way to handle it, Vandalism is a crime and push-ups do not fix the mailbox.
I think it's a good idea to have them do push-ups if they have no previous record, and this is simply a warning.
If you cause the problem it needs to be fixed, whether you're an officer or not you can't just think push-ups will change their minds. If they get away with it then they'll just go back for more. I think a more proper punishment is in order for the delinquents.
Push-ups are nothing jail would have been what a good cop would have done I'm disappointed in the fact that they think push-ups could fix the problem.
I think that it's fair because the kids weren't adult yets and they made a mistake. Although the cops shouldn't have been doing that, they gave a punishment that the teens deserved. The boys should be thankful because if that hadn't happened, they would've been arrested!
I think push-ups are very hard to do but they still don't take as much time to fix a mailbox
I believe it was a good punishment, but the police should not have decided that on there own.
If I was the officer I would have arrested them but giving them push-ups is like giving them a second chancel.
I think that push-ups are good but this isn't a situation to give someone push-ups the officer should have thought twice about what they did as should've the people who got the push-ups.
i think the police could have at least gave them a warning. because it is not right or fair to me. maybe the polices will have mercy and give them another chance. hey carl how are you
Carl its one thing to arrest them but push up's is too much we all see they have done something very wrong but the police shouldn't take things on there own hand
#NUMBER1FAN
Push-ups are a good punishment for someone in ROTC or a military branch but not in a crime.
I think that justice was served, and that making them do push-ups was a good decision instead of making them go to prison. Also, they are cops they should be able to make a decision on bad behavior instead of wasting time, and instead of making them go to prison in my opinion this was a great idea. I believe that justice was served!
I think that the police officers where actually being easy on them. They could have easily filed a report and the kids could have gotten in more trouble. I believe the police officers should have filed a report and not have taken the law into their own hands
I think the punishment is fair, they wanted do the crime they should recive a punishment...
I honestly think the cop should not take problems in there own hands, and it's just wrong for making the boys do push ups. Yes, I understand that they are trying to teach those boys a lesson, but still the cops should have taken the boys to jail.
The Punishment given was a little extreme. I don't know why push-ups can be a punishment.
I think this punishment is kind of wrong in a way, because even though they’re cops they shouldn’t be able to do that. The cops should of done what any other cop would do and that would be to make an arrest. I don’t understand why they made them do push ups?
The class feels that this was a good idea but they still should have been ticketed or have to rebuild the broken Mail Boxes.
it's better than going to jail hope they leared a lesson
I think the cops shouldn't make them do pushups becuase they are going to think they can get away with more stuff.
I like what the police officers did, but it wasn't there job to decide that those kids should do push-ups. The police officers should follow the rules and give them a punishment for vandalizing the mailboxes.
i think what the police did was good so that the next time the kids think about smahing a mail box the will think twice about there decision.
I believe making them do pushups was a fair punishment for what they did.
i think it was really smart so it wont go on there record
I honestly would take the option to do the push ups, But after you think about it, It is reall unfair. Some teens who did crime, had to pay full price for the ticket, and spend time in prison. It is not fair. It is also not fair that they got off the hook so easily. Exercise is much different than paying full price for something they destroyes, which was not theirs.
Sean
I think the cop should have arrested the two people. The reason why is because they broke the law they should go to jail it’s as simple as that. I don’t really see how hard it is to understand it they broke someone else’s property it’s a federal offensse and they shouldn’t have had to do push ups on the side of the street, but in there jail cell.
Older people who are residents get thrown in jail because they vandalize property. These kids are as much citizens as those older people
I disagree
If they let small crimes go like that then there would be a lot more crime going on in a city. I think they should have had them arrested to show them a real life situation if they think they can get away with it once then they will think that again and do another crime
I think that it was a good idea maybe they will learn there lesson so they dont do it again. However if they do it again there should be more of a punisment then just doing push-ups.
I honestly support this, because the officers could have taken care of this in other ways, but this is different instead of taking them to jail they taught them a personal lesson. Yes I understand that they did a crime but who would want that little of a crime on their records forever?
I think that that they should have punished him and it was fair that he had to do pushups instead of going to jail. The people who vandalized the mailbox shouldn’t have gone to jail because it wasn’t that important.
I think that making the kids do pushups, instead of going to jail was brilliant. In my opion it's good exersise and much better then going to jail.
I believe that push ups are not good punishment because they do not keep people from doing the same thing twice.
I think that this is a fair punshment insted of going to a trial and then going to jail. This was a fair punishment.
I think that the push-up punishment was a better idea then takeing them to jail.
I think that while the kids where getting punished it wasn’t up to the officers to deicide the type of punishment for them
in my opinion doing push ups is way better than getting arrested. and all they did was smash ONE mailbox right? no reason to arrest teenagers for doing that. Maybe a small charge. The policemen probably thought that too. that the kids don't need that big of a punishment. Push ups are way better than being arrested or getting charged. I would rather do push ups than go to jail or get fined. So yes, i think its fair.
No matter how much punishment is needed, it's not just up to the police officers to dieside there punishment. It was not fair. Its not the way the law says people should be punished for there bad behavior.
I think that the push up punishment is pretty fair. Since they are underage and not mature yet, they shouldn't already have to be treated like an adult who would have to go straight to jail.
I believe the push up punish is a good way for the boys to learn a life lesson . Because even teens shouldn't be able to get away with little things like that are still breaking the law . I also think the officers was trying to punish them without having actual consenquences , i don't think the officer should of been been suspended.
I think it's fair, they shouldn't have been breaking the law. And doing push-ups is way better then going to jail or getting in bigger trouble.
I think that push ups can be a fair punishment if nothing to bad of damage has been done. They should still be getting a better punishment than push ups though.
My opinion is that it is to easy to do push-ups, that they should have to pay for a new mailbox and do sidups push-ups and that should get a point off there drivers licence.
I believe that the push up punnishment is unfair because then the teens think they can get away with what they did by doing push ups. I dont think they learn anything from it because they get away with what they did and other teens know they can get away with it just by doing push ups.
I think that push up punishment is fair and its funny that a cop would make a kid do a push up.
I think push-up is not a punishment because they should not get of easy.
I think that what the police did is alright, as long as they had to do lots of push ups.
I don’t support the punishment. I don’t think doing push-ups is a punishment, I think it is only for exercise. Maybe the young people are used to exercise and they didn’t learn their lesson. If I were the police I would make them do another punishment appropriate to what they did to make them learn their lesson.
I think that the police where wrong for taking the law in to their own hands, but at least the kids got a punishment. The police should have arrested them and written a report instead of making them do push-ups for a punishment.
I think the push up punishment is fair because they don't want to put kids in jail just because they knocked down mailboxes. Even the mom of one of the juveniles thanked the police officers for doing that to them because it taught them a lesson. I think it is fine as long as they got taught a lesson.
The police and the kids should both be arrested because they both did something that they were not supposed to do. The police made a wrong choice because they are not supposed to decide on the final punishment for the kids, but the kids did get what they deserved because they did just as much wrong as the police.
I believe that what the cops did was merciful and that they should have thanked the cops for only making them do something as harmless as push-ups. Think of what might have happened to them if the cops hadn't straightened things out.
I think that the push up punishment was fair in this case since it wasn't a major crime and I think it should only be used on people under 18 since they are to young to go to prison they have some type of consequece for their actions
I think that the push- up punishment is not a good idea because if you just let them do simple push-ups, then they will keep on doing bad things and when they get caught, they will again do push-ups.
I think that is a great way instead of making them go to jail plus all they did was vandalize a mailbox they should not go to jail for that.
I don't think that they should do pushups. i think they should be suspended for a week, and should pay for all the mailboxes that they damaged, and say sorry to the people that they did it to.
it would be good if they had to pay for it. great idea!
my name is mac, and i agree about doing push ups for a punishment in fact, I would go and explode a mail box right now just to do push ups
i dont think thats right. i mean i agreed with the way the oficers handled it but i also think that if people thnk "hey. im going to go smash some mail boxes to get pushups." is maybe part of the reason why they are being considered for suspension. i mean if evry one thinks that then kids/teens might think its ok for them to do it too.
I think it was not a good punishment. These kids where breaking the law, I have to do push ups every day just to stay in shape and i haven't done anything wrong. Push-ups just aren't going to teach them a lesson.
I think they should have went to jail and its unfair that they just had to do push ups
Its not terrible, its still a punishment. It also depends on the amount of push ups they did,But they still shouldn't have made them do push ups. I believe the cops found it entertaining, but its wrong.
I believe that the police officer had them do pushups it was well deserved for the kids. Although the police officer did not do his duty. I think that the fact they just did pushups was a good idea then not going to jail.
what the officers did is a OK punishment next time they should get a worse punishment though.
i think the push up punisment was ok and thay should have paid the mail box to
I think the push-up punishment is downright, well, stupid. The police aren't gym teachers. It's not professional.
I think that they deserved it because if not they would keep doing it over again and never suffer the punishments util it is too late and many peoples mail box will be vandalized...!
I think the punishment should have been served because it serves right if you're doing something. This taught the teenagers a lesson. Also, it is a smaller punishment then sending them to jail. They only vandalized a mailbox, not anything serious like steal money...
I think that having them do pushups was way better then having them go to jail. This police officer did a good thing and taught them a good lesson for ruining someone elses property. The pushups were scary enough having a police officer telling you to do them. I think that all these kids need to do are pay for the damage and do pushups.
This is definitely unfair. One of the amendments stated that there shall not be any cruel or unusual punishments. if this isn't one, its the other. The police officers have their limits, and this isn't withing them.
i think that they should go to jail for what the did
i think that the cops did good because the kids deserved that instead of jail time. Also the kids should have never did it anyway. Last the cops are different in san diego than in road island.
i think they should been arrested because what they did was a criminal offense. They should also do community service because they should have never done that in the first place. They should do buy a new mailbox for the mailbox they wrecked.
I think that the push up punishment is pretty fair. Since they are underage and not mature yet, they shouldn't already have to be treated like an adult. adults would of had to go straight to jail.
heck yea id rather do push-ups rather than be in jail! what they did wasnt right yea i agree but the cops did the right thing by making them do push-ups.thank you for your time now have a great day
I AGREE with what the cops did because i think it would cost the state less money and less room being used up in jail for the people who really need to go to jail. I think that it was a good idea but i think that if its for something really small and not a really big deal they should do that but if it for like assault or something like that then they should get arrested. if that happened to me i would thank the cop for not taking me to jail.
I applaud the officer, I belive he did a job well done. One reason is because i am a very active person and strongly belive in physical fitness. Exercise is very healthy for your body.
I think its good because, the kids probaly learned their lesson and wont do it ever again and might not be sent to jail and it got them to stay out of jail so that..they wont't go 🙂
I think it was interesting because not a lot of officers are nice. Then again i think they should of at least spent a few days in jail. They should of never did what they did to that mail box and it wasn't even theirs.
I think that the push ups were far because they destroyed someone else's property.
I support it because the police gave a very hard punishment I think that it teached them a lesson. I also oppose it because the police wasn't really doing his job, vandalizing is a very serious matter.
I agree because you don't what it on your record and both jail and that do teach them a lesson
I think that wasn't a reasonable punishment. Just because they were being juvenile doesn't mean they should get a mild punishment, vandalizing is a crime so the should they should take full responsibility.
I believe that the push up punishment if completely fair, at least in my eyes because i would rather do that then go to jail or have my parents find out.
it was wrong of the cop to do but I can see why he did it
I think the officers did the right thing and shouldn't get suspened. If the oficers reported them it could ruin their future.
I think that making him do the push-ups was minimum consequence for hitting down all the mail boxes. I wouldent have gone as far as suspending him, but he needed to now what he did wrong.
I think that the push up punishment was fair. The police where smart to not arrest the teenagers. If you get arrested, it can go on your reccord and that can lead you to not get into the college you want of get the job you want. All of these bad things could happen just because you knocked down a mailbox.
I think that the push up punishment is a good punishment but should only be used against minors for small offenses. For example, the punishment would be fine if a 16 year old does prank calls but if a more serious offense occurs, then the punishment should also be more serious..
I think this is a completely fair punishment. The reason why is that it is much easier than going to jail for a minor crime. And it also is fair because it is not going on his criminal record. So it wont affect his chances of get a job or getting into collage.
if they make them do push ups which only well make them stronger. Also easer to vandalizing other thing with more power and stretgh. I vote NOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think it great because you don't have to go to jail and it just wasting jail cells and it a great punishment
I personally think they should not make them do pushups because they might be too strict. Suspending them is not a punishment to a teen it is a freedom to them. They should have them do a few hours of community service instead.
I think the cops were okay in making the young teens do pushups. I don't think the police should get in trouble for it. The teens should be thankful to not have a police report and/ or suspension even if they don't like it.
I think they should of took them to jai or the station because they are stealing or destroying other people's property.
Another thought is they should've had community service.
I personally think that would be a good punishment, but it's also not right to not do your job right.
even though its a little strange I hate push ups but its better then being arestied
I believe that since they had vandalized someone else's property that they should have a punishment of some sort, and the push-up punishment wont ruin the kids reputation but it will also help teach them that vandalizium is bad.
I don't think the cop should get in trouble because it wasn't a bad judgement. It's kids being kids and no one got hurt.
I think they shouldn't have done that but they probably needed the exsersize.
I Think Its A Good Idea (:
I think it was a fair punishment. At least they didn't get arrested. It could have been a lot worse. I don't think the police officers should be suspended.
I think this kind of punishment wasn't effective enough to stop them in the future. They need to know the consequences of their actions, and should walk away changed, not with sore arms.
I think it's a good idea for them to do push ups because a 15 year old is too young be arrested, but I think they should be in court.
I think push ups are better than getting charged or having a record. It's the police officers job to enforse the law but the way they took it in their hand was harmless.
They should of been more respectful. If they did that to a lot of people, they should of paid a lot of money. They should apolgize and pay more money. doing push ups is not justice. It's more like working out.
I think they did a good thing by making them do push-ups instead of arresting them or charging them and giving them a bad record.
I think the cops did this just right. Why would they waste their time on teens when they have bigger crimes going on out in the world.
I think it was good but then again they should've went to jail because that is other people's mailboxes.
Mail boxes actually belong to either the state or the government for some reason
I think they learned their lesson by doing push-ups so then they won't to it again. Also, I would not do that after doing push-ups on the side of the road. They also might be made fun of if their friends saw them doing that.
I think the cops making kids do push-ups instead of going through with filing a report is a great idea for punishment. It would embarrass them enough so they might not do it again. I think the cops shouldn't get in trouble.
I would rather do push-ups than get arrested because it wouldn't be on a juvilnelle record. Yes, the cops should get in trouble because the judge makes the decision on what happens to the kids.
the officers should not be punished. The kids were vandalizing mailboxes. they should be glad they did not get arrested and only had to do push-ups.
I believe that it was right for the police to make them do push-ups. The push-ups will teach these young citizens to behave properly and to follow the law. The police officers should not get into trouble for making them do the push-ups, for they were just showing that when you do something wrong that they will have to suffer the consquences.
I thought that the police did a rigth thing, because the teenagers that did this act are too young to get other punishments.
I think that the cops should be in trouble because they caught them and should be putting them in jail. The cops forced the kids to do push-ups because the cops probably didn't want to write a report.
This is an example of a cruel and unusual punishment, which is forbidden in constitution. The police are given rules of how to make arrests, they have to follow them.
I do not think this cops showed justice for one if they did something bad they should of took those people to jail not just make do push ups witch will proddly not make them learn anything and also if they were planning to do something bad they could've give them a warning
The young people who vandalized a mail-box should not have done roadside pushups. They should have gotten arrested or fined. Push-ups for vandalizing mail boxes is not acceptable. The police officers should have made an arrest or they should paid a fine. This is not a way to punish people.
I think it is not good idea. There are rules and laws that ancestors made and we should follow, unless we think it wrong, but we aren't, so it is not necessary to punish in that way.
The teenagers who vandalized the postbox was just 18 years old. In that age, they should study. But, by vandalizing the mail box should get punished. But I think giving pushups for a teenager 18 years old for a punishment was better than arresting them.
I support the push up punishment. Why should they go to jail for vandalizing a mailbox? It is good exercise and I think they learned their lesson. I think that if it was a bigger crime they would have to go to jail.
i do not think it was a good idea ti make them do push-ups instead of arresting them. Not arresting them and letting them off the hook will not teach them a lesson because they can still commit crimes while being free.
I think it was a good punishment as long as they did an appropriate punishment amount of push-ups. For example if it cost 100 dollars to fix it they should have to do 100 push-ups.
I agree with Brian. Simply put, these kids needed to be disciplined for their actions. The effects of this sort of punishment on the vandals might even teach them that they can get away with similar acts in the future.
I think the officers let the teens off easy, because there would have been serious punishiment. In my opinon pushups are a punishment for coaches not officers
Cameron
I think it is a good punishment because it teaches kids that instead of going to jail they just have to disciplinary work. Also I think that it is basically a get out of jail free card. Literally. This will teach kids not to do bad things anymore because nobody likes pushups, especially when you are told to do them by a police officer.
Even though the police meant good, they should have had a harsher punishment.
Whatever the officers did shouldn't get them in trouble, because I think one of them officers have a child and I think he don’t want his child to go to jail instead of push-ups. I don't think the police officers should be suspended.
I think that the push-ups were a good idea because it gives the kids a second chance while still giving them a punishment to tell them not to do it.
I don't think that push ups were the right punishment because what does exercise have to do with vandalizing a mailbox and besides that the police don't decide that punishment
I think any kid would take push-ups over being arrested any day , the police just did what they felt was right so there for i don't think they should be suspended
I do support this punishment because this is how they learn from their mistakes so they will remember never to do that againi still do not under stand why they vandilized a mailbox i will remember this day when im abvout to make a poor ;( choice when i grow up.
Personally, I don't think the punishment was harsh enough, but it got the job done and the vandals shouldn't be expecting to have as much luck a second time around.
I am totally for that punishment. I more see it as a warning that the police gave them with only some exercise. It's only a few push ups, it is fine with me
I support the push up punishment because it was a discipline that would not interfere with there criminal record. Also the punishment was immediate, reinforcing that what they did was wrong.
I think the police officers did the right thing punishing them, but I don't think that was the right punishment. I think the teenagers deserved something more harsh. (If you know what I mean.)
I don't support this because these teens are getting humiliated. Although these teens shouldn't be vandalizing mail boxes grow up.
The officer did do wrong, but the teens most likely learned their lesson. If they did not learn their lesson they would do wrong agian then they would go to jail. Plus there has to be a starting point for everything, this could be one of them.So we need to prevent them from doing wrong.
that makes no sense
The police officers shouldn't decide the punishment. Even though the police officers wanted to teach the teenagers a lesson; they should of left it to the court to decide the punishment or contact with teenagers parents about and let know what happened.
The officer does not have that kind of say in a punishment, they should of went to jail. Push ups wont teach them what is right and what is wrong.
The police officer has no right to decide the punishment, like what Christy said. But I personally I think doing pushups, then legally arresting them would've been fine.
I think that the cop was wrong and should have handled this differently putting kids through physical punishment should be considered cruel an unusual
I do not support this act because it isn't the officers job to handle that. I know that smashing mailboxes is wrong, but they should be suspended.
The officers did wrong they should of arrested them and not made them do push-ups that's just wrong
Police officers deciding on a punishment was unfair. They weren't qualified to do that, however, they could have written fines for the teens.
I oppose it because I think the police are not the teenager's parents. They need to do what they do every other time with criminals. They can't just make criminals do push ups whenever they feel like it. But its done and over with and i can't do anything about it.
I don't support this. I think that the punishment was not correct. Push-ups have nothing to do with vandalizing something.
thats not fair to people that have done the same thing and have gotten arrested and sentenced to a jail term but push up's is a bad choice the people who made them do the push up's should be fired from there jobs. they did a bad thing because they might do it again.
I think the officer was trying to do good by the kids. Obviously he should've stood by the law, but he was trying to teach them a lesson without sending them to jail. I think he wasn't entirely wrong to make them do push-ups, and he shouldn't be suspended because of it.
I think the officer considered teens' fault as no big crime enough to go to jail.
Push-up in the load is more lighter punishment than being arrested.
But If same teens did something wrong again, they would have to be punished by regulations.
The officers should've brought the teens to jail, but the push ups probably did teach them a lesson. If they do it again, they should go to jail.
i think the cops had a right to make them do push ups because They knew that some one will bail them out so thats what i think
I think that the officer was right to make those kids do push ups. Just because they did some damage to a mailbox doesn't mean they have to go to jail. I think that the officer was really smart. But still, what they did was still wrong.
illegal power grab by cops
I think it was ok what the police did because if that was me i would rather do push ups than go to jail. But at the same time they did do wrong, those kids must have been really humiliated and felt bad. As long in the end they learned thier lesson it was worth it.
okay come on its just push ups its not going to kill you. look at it like this its better then going to jail.
I think the push ups weren't bad...it was that they made the punishment without the law involved...not that the push ups were a prob...I think it's great
I think it is a good punishment they should learn to do things right
We need to start doing something our systems are not working maybe this will help we have issues with people being repeat offenders where I am from go to jail for three mounths get out steal over 7000 thousand dollars get caught go back to jail get out do it all over again its not working we protect people who.don't abide by the law better than the people who do
I say the kids deserved to do such a numerous amount of push-ups (maybe even a few more would not kill them). For starters, they'll get their exercise and lose some weight for the day ahead of them. Additionally, it will help them remember not to vandalize other folk's mailboxes and disturb another person's privacy. I would be beating em' with the mailbox itself they tried invade.
I don't agree with what the officers did because if they were causing trouble and destroying objects that weren't their's, then they should do a service project or an act of kindness for them.
i support this punishment.Even if you don't do it right, you still need to do push-ups. Everyone can do it differently than others. Everyone needs to know the consequences of their actions and how they effect other people.
The whole point is to humiliate them and I support it
Oh, so they'll know never to do it again because they had to do push-ups.
They should not be suspended
Its better than the alternative of jail and its not like it's hard
I agree
it's a good punishment because kids learn there lesson about not breaking the law
we could not put kids in jail push ups are a good idea
i think they should go to jail
I don't think it would be a reasonable punishment. Some children don't have upper body strength, therefore they can not do push-ups.
i don't agree because people should have a choice to do push ups unless they are in school i don't like push ups for any reason, i wont do it........
I think it really funny how they just to push-up in front of people if they cant do it people get a laugh.
i do agree with push ups punishment and don't agree the reason why i agree is because if people or teens get in a fight or steal. officers should make them do push ups and take them to jail what ever they did , and the reason i don't agree is because officers should take them to jail cause what they did steal they steal, fight.
I oppose it i think it is stupid. And there supposed to be doing work not P.E
I think this is a good thing the cops are doing.
I think it was a good punishment. Although it shouldn't of been up to the police, the teens damaged property. Doing road side push-ups is a better punishment then serving in jail for a night.
i think its wrong most kids are out of shape and cant do push ups,so I think its not right
I think its wrong to make them do push ups
I think this is what every cop should do to kids doing bad things but for the worse of a crime the more push ups they should do!
I don't think it is a bad thing to do as long as the officers had the right to tell them to do push-ups. And it also depends on the crime they committed whether or not they should get arrested.
I don't think this should be used as a punishment because then teenagers with think if I get into trouble I will only have to do push ups.
I think its a good idea people need punishments. If you are one of those people who think this is a bad punishment, than don't do the crime an d you wont have to suffer the consequences.
Giving teens push ups is wrong because some teens can't do push ups and they should ask their parents to sign a permission slip to do push ups or not.
I'm a teen myself and i feel that this is a good way to punish kids without getting them in trouble with there parents and it teaches them a lesson
I think it was fair because if they just make them pay a fine they will probably just go do it again and again.
I think its a good idea people need punishments. If you are one of those people who think this is a bad punishment, than don't do the crime an d you wont have to suffer the consequences. Don't do anything to get yourself in trouble and you wont have to to the punishment.
i think that is unintelligent to make someone to do push-ups because u break the law u should go to jail.
But it would be funny to see that!!!!!!!
LOL
YOLO
I support it because its better than getting fine, and they should be able to do push-ups. It might teach them a lesson .AT least they don't have tho go downtown
Push-ups are fine but it would be hilarious if they were put on Scared Straight.
i think they got of easily they did something horribly and that's all they did and the com-playing.
It wasnt that horrible, its not like they killed anyone. (different Andrew than the one that said that)
The teens should have gotten arrested because since they had to do push-ups they might think that its okay to do bad things and if they get caught they might think that they will have to do push-ups
giving teen push up for punsent i know that they are bad but that will go to far.
i think that people shouldn't make other people do push-ups for a punishment because what if they can't get down on the ground and do push-ups so i think they should have a different punishment
i think it is a great idea because some teens just don't listen and if you give them push ups it will hurt a lot if you do a lot and your not even touching them so it like your spanking them with a invisible whip for being bad and if there smart there listen
I don't think kids or adults should have to do push ups as there punishments i hate to see people go to jail but alot of people cant even do push ups what are you going to make a group of 5 do push ups when only 2 of them can so you send the other 3 to jail
They should not be made to do pushups , they should have been fined, or maybe been sent to jail for a week or so.
lol why pushups 🙂
I think it is fair Because they were being silly (Stupid) so yes i think that they should do that only to 17 and younger thats all
I do support it because it will keep kids in shape and they still get punished.
That be wrong Push students to do that is really wrong they don't learn from that.
I think it was right for them to give them this punishment. Any other time it would have been wrong of them. It all depends on the situation. Had it been that they were just talking during class it would have been wrong of them to do so. So i guess you can say i am for it but in many ways against it as well.
I think that the push-up punishment was fair, but i also believe that they should have also been punished in more than one way.
I think that its ok to do that or they should have a choice... they can either do push ups or they can get suspended or detention.
I think making them do push ups is fine, but make them do like 500 because of what they did. If they did something not as bad then they should do less.
I think its a great idea! Anyone who ends up with a punishment like that should be great full because if its a punishment like that chances are that wont go on there record.
I think the police officers shouldn't have taken it in their hands they should've let the court decide what their punishment was
I think its good that they did that so hopefully they didnt have a criminal record then and they wont now.Plus that can help build character.:D
Kids should only go to jail depending on what they did to something or someone
I think that the police man has the right to tell the to do push-ups for what they did. and also the police man didn't hurt them a little workout wouldn't hurt them right?
I Disagree Cause They Were Smashing Other Peoples Property
So They Gotta Do Something Good For Them In Return
I like what the officers are doing. My mom is an officer so it would be funny to hear her come home and say I made a guy do push ups today.
It wasn't serious enough for jail, but too serious for push-ups. Why make them exercise for a few minutes when they could do something useful, like community service?
I support this because it's better than doing something way worse like going to jail.. But I also don't support this because I don't get how push-ups have anything to do with vandalizing mailboxes.
The officers didn't really have the authority to punish them but it wasn't really a punishment at all. I mean push ups? They're easy and people do push ups all the time. They deserve some more kind of punishment for vandalizing property. Its just encouraging them to do it again.
I think it was okay.
Definitely.
I think it isnt a good idea because people will think "Oh the punishment is only push-ups, I dont have to worry about jail" so they will keep doing crimes if the punishment is push-ups.
I don't think they should do that its not right that they allow teachers to do that its just not right.
If kids are fit and good at push ups it is not a punishment
Giving the teens push-ups are good to do because it will teach them not to do it again and its a punishment.
I ytink it was good that they didnt even arrest them they should be happy.
I don't think that doing push-ups is better than being seriously punished for what the person did or else the person doesn't really get punished for what they did or could have done.
Just because, your a police officer, or have been in the military dose not give you the right to take matters into your own hands.
My coach for volleyball makes us do tons of push ups, but that's for a sport and to make us stronger. Vandalism is a crime and should be dealt with like a crime.
I think Push-ups are a good Punishment because If Students did not they Homework or Class Work they have to do Push-Ups..........
I don't think that was a good punishment. If they only had to do push ups some might say, " Hey we can get away with it because all we'll have to do is push ups!" If people are really doing something wrong they should be punished. And not with a few simple push ups.
The crime wasn't that bad so I think that they shouldn't have to go to jail but the push-ups weren't the best punishment because they got off easy and they might do it again.
