A boy on the girls' team
There's no boys' volleyball team at Yonkers High School. So Jenson Daniel, who hopes to earn a college scholarship in the sport, has been playing on the girls' team.
The state has benched him this year, though. After a fitness evaluation, officials determined that Jenson is too strong to play on the girls' team. So while he's allowed to work out with them, he's not allowed to play in games.
What do you think: Does Jenson's strength give his team an unfair advantage? Should he be allowed to play if there's no boys' team?

i think he should be able to play on the girls hockey team .if girls can play on the boys " football" team why can boys play on girls teams . it is funny because in Ms. Coss' class we were talking about the same topic. i think that if you are going to treat one preson one way you should treat the other the same way.

They already can if a same sex team is not offered such as football or wrestling. Volleyball is similar for boys so why not?
I totally agree with you. If people allow girls to play on boys' teams, why haven't people called them weaknesses? There's no difference with a guy on a girls' team.
as a volleyball player myself i think that he should be able to play even if he is strong because he could give his team an advantage and also if he encouraged enough boys to want to play then they might have enogh boys to set up a boys team
...Men and women are different. No reason that there can't be a boys and girls volleyball team, same with football. If not enough girls are interested that does not mean that a girl should be allowed to play on a boys football team. It's not discrimination, just common sense
i totally agree with 'Sheba'. It's basically gender discrimination by the state. And I think that needs to change in our governments today. If he wants to play on a girls' team, why not? Sure, he's ON the team, but he doesn't play to colleges can see how he's doing. They LET him on the team, but don't have him play? Wow. Just let the kid play.
Just because he's not a girl doesn't mean he can't play on a girl team. Seeing as how his school doesn't have a boys volleyball team, he has the right to joing the girls. He obviously wants to be on the team so he should be able to. Boys and girls should be able to be on the same teams.
I think he should be able to play, if his school doesn't offer a boys volleyball team,then they should allow boys to play on the girls team. Also volleyball is mostly about team work so i dont think having him on the team would be an advantage.
I think all girls and boys should be able to play all sports. It doesnt mean they HAVE to be in that sport but if they wanted to then they should be able to try.

Jenson should be allowed to play because it isn't fair that there is no boys' volleyball team. If he really wants to play then they should let him join. Maybe if he gives the girls some slack then he should be able to join.
If people are so worried that it's unfair for Jenson to be on the girls' team, why don't they create a boys' team? If the school is low on funds, can't parent donate some money and equipment? If they can't even try to create a tea, I think Jenson should play, anyway.
Schools are not the only place where you can play on a volleyball team. There are private teams.
I like that a boy can play on the girls team if her wants! if his school doesn't offer volleyball then they can either make a team or let him play on the girls team. his strengths might give him an unfair advantage, but it means more wins for the volleyball team.
Right! I know a kid who I go to madison's east high in wisconsin that joined the cheer team (the only boy on the team by the way) and he did really well. I don't see anything wrong with having a boy on a girl team, isn't ther girls on the boy's team too, so what difference does it make? Don't the Olympics have a boy's volleyball team? So there isn't really abything wrong with that
I think that there is no boys team so the school should either let him play on the girls team or make a boys team I think its wroong to seperate groupps into boy girl catagorys in the first place.

There is almost no different from boys and girls especially in volleyball. In regulation diagree, make a boy's volleyball team. If its what he love nothing should stop him. The girls don't have problem about it and neither does he, he should be able to play.

Though some may argue that Boy's seem physically stronger than girls, he should still be allowed on the team. Everyone seems to be looking for equality these days. If it is fair and right that a girl could play on a guy's team, then it should apply for boys on girl's teams as well.

I really think this goes back to the Title 9 debate we had in what seems like a long time ago. We need to be fair to both genders and allow them both the privilege of being treated equally. That is what the US is all about.
He should be allowed to play on the girls volleyball team. It's not really an advantage if the other team has a girl that's to strong, so it would be even. But it's an advantage if the other team has girls that aren't as strong as Daniel.
I think a boy should be allowed on the girl's team because girls can be on a football team. And, the state officials must obey the educational law, Title IX.
A boy should be allowed to play on a girls team if there is no boys team. Its either let him play on the girls team or get a boys volleyball team.

I believe Jenson should be on the volleyball team. Even though it is only girls, it is very unfair because the kid probably loves to play volleyball and he can't because of the rules. It's basically like giving a newborn baby its first toy, then right when he/she plays with it for a hour, you take it away and they start crying. Can't they make one adjustment?

If Jenson was on an all guys team, this wouldn't be a problem. If Jenson was a girl on the boys team (if it's the only one offered), this wouldn't be a problem. So why is it a problem for the only guy to be on the girls team if there isn't a guys team?
i would think that having a boy on the girls volley ball team would be unfair considering the genetic differences between a boy and a girl. being a boy most boys have the advantage of strength and height as well as stamina ......

No, I do not think is a good ideas. Boy are to strong to play on this girl's team, and this is not fair for other team. I think he only work and help his team but not allowing for a competition.

As a volleyball player myself, I would encourage him onto any team because of his incredible skills. His expertise could help other players to learn more.
Ii also am a vollleyball player. This is my second year. I think that he could help coach but i think he should not play because to other teams this would not be fair. They don't have this advantage. Also i believe that collages could still look at him, case he could be helpful, as to coach their teams.
Girl's can be on foot ball teams what's wrong with a boy on a girls team sure they are a little stronger but we are all human we shoulder be along to do with others can no matter what your gender is.
i think that this is an unfair rule because it shouldn't matter what gender or how strong you are to play on an all girl's team. also they should have some restrictions on how hard he can hit the ball and how much time he can play so the other team could have a chance to win.

I mean its called a girls volleyball team for a reason. I mean having a man in a girls locker room is that even correct? Same with the team. Its the concept of it. He could be a man on a girls volleyball team, but it would defeat the purpose of GIRL. no point in having ONLY GIRLS when u have a guy.
I think that it's not fair that the guy is benched because there is no volleyball team for him to play on otherwise. I think that he should get a group of guys together to have a team and start it as a school sport.
I think it was very brave of him to join a girls team. If I was a guy I would have never done that and they should let him play because he is brave enough to do that.

Jenson wants to play on a volleyball team to get a scholarship to a good college, and he is good enough player to play on a team, so the school should start a boys volleyball team or he should play with the girls. Because he deserves to play!
It is highly fair that he should play on the girls volleyball team , because it is the schools fault that they do not provide a male based volleyball team. And the fact that he is "too strong" is okay, because a female can also have the same strength that he possesses.

There are ways to prevent disadvantages the others teams get due to Jenson's participation.

I think that Jenson should be able to play on the volleyball team because of the fact that he could try out for cheerleading and probably be allowed to play. There is no rule against having a boy on the volleyball team, so they shouldn't make up rules so he can't play.

Jenson shouldn't be seen as having an unfair advantage, it is the same as if a very strong girl joined the team. Sports are all about trying to get an advantage over the other teams: that's why sports teams practice and work out a lot. Since there is no boys team for Jenson to join, he has no other option if he wants to play volleyball. I don't think the school board should keep him from playing what he likes just because it is not a popular sport for boys, and a boys team has not been made.
Our class agrees that Jensen should be allowed to play on the girls team because there is no boys team at his school. You often hear of this story the other way around, a girl on a boys team, so it would only be fair for a boy to participate on a girls team.
It's unfair for him to play because boys are more athletic and stronger in most cases. It's okay for him to do what he does now, by practicing and sitting the bench, but if he plays it's unfair.

I think that boys should not play on a girl's vollyball team because it woulden't be fair.

Jenson Daniel is now in “high school”, which means there is obvious difference in strength between boys and girls. So, it’s just not fair for any reason that boys in girls’ team are allowed.

as a boys volleyball player myself in florida, i know i shouldnt play against girls, but for fun, not competitively. it would be detrimental to the girls. it doesnt matter if there is no boys team, you cannot hurt the girls who may have hopes for college. play another sport. girls and boys volleyball are two totally different games, and he could damage the future of some girls by doing such.

I don't believe having a co-ed team compete against an all women's team would be fair. However, I would advocate for creating a men's team! I think Jenson should be able to play on the girls volleyball team, because his strongness could help the girls win and since there isnt a boys volleyball team he should get the oppourtunity to play on the girls volleyball team to have a chance to play and get a good scholarship.

Because of Title IX, men's sports have been cut to create equal sport opportunities for women. When will Title IX come into play to provide equal sport opportunities for young men like Jenson Daniel. We see young women having the opportunity to join football teams as well as wrestling teams because their school doesn't provide a women's team. It is the school responsibility as well as the states to make sure that every student has an equal opportunity whether it is education or sports. If that school district cannot provide such opportunity to Jenson Daniel, I believe the state should pay his tuition to allow him to transfer to a school that does provide an all male volleyball team.

I am currently a volleyball player and have been one for quite a while. If I were Jensen and there was the option of playing on the girls team or not at all, I would totally want to play on the girls team. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. I watched Olympic team volley ball this past summer and on the guys teams their server was usually their strongest guy so that he could bomb the ball over to the other side and score consecutive points. If the district allows the girls to play on boys teams then he should be able to play on the girls team even if he is to strong, but if there are no girls on boys team then he should not be able to play on a girls team. There is no reason he shouldn't be able to play. Now, many schools allow girls to play football and thats more dangerous than having one guy with a bunch of girls. Schools are supposed to help students achive their goals and get scholarships, but if he cant do what he is good at then he won't be able to get that scholarship. LET HIM PLAY!!!!

At our school, girls have been allowed on the football team (if only as punter). It's not right to deny Jensen the sport he loves, although maybe there should be compensation for his strength – rules could be made against him playing front row or something. Not letting boys play on a girl's volleyball team is not only restricting their right to play their favorite sport, but that is a civil rights issue because everyone should receive equal rights. So if the state benched him they have two choices, they can either have the university that Jenson wants to go to come watch him play volleyball or they can make a law saying that boys can't play on the same team as girls and girls can't play on boys teams.

I recently started back public school from homeschooling and understand Jenson's predicament. I was expecting my high school to have a JROTC program so I can prepare for the military but it doesn't. Yes, Jenson has an unfair advantage of strength but how can he reach his dreams if he cant play. Girls are allowed to play on boys organized sports teams all the time. Why dampen his dreams?

Other schools around where I live have allowed guys to be on the girl's volleyball team, but they can't be on varsity. They can play junior varsity, because we think that is the level where players can work on and improve their volleyball skills. They also say that junior varsity is where we get playing time. I think having guys play on the volleyball team isn't a big deal at all.

I really think he should be aloud to play. His gender shouldn't matter at all, not in high school anyway. Here at my school we have had quite a few female wrestlers and even one or two female football players. Since there isn't a boys team for him to join he should be able to play with the girls, if the other schools in that league have an issue they could try recruiting boys for their teams as well.

School is not the only place where you can play volleyball, there are private teams. Jenson Daniel needs to find another team where he will not give that team an unfair advantage.

I believe this is nothing more than a case of gender inequality. There is a large push about awareness of inequality towards females (which there is nothing wrong with) but I feel like there isn't enough awareness of gender inequality aimed towards males. Under Title IX he should be allowed to play on the team just like a girl should be allowed to play on a football team with other boys. I don't think it had anything to do with him having an unfair advantage, it was all about the state government being uncomfortable with having a boy on a girl's team. That is just my opinion.

He SHOULD be allowed to play ! It doesn't matter if he's a girl or not. In the game book, Did it say "Boys are NOT allowed to play/join?" No, I don't think so. And if the other team doesn't have a boy on their team, then too bad. Some boys love to play volleyball. I play volleyball at a VERY competitive level. Watching the Olympics last summer I noticed how much higher men volleyball players could jump, and how much harder they could hit. If he was a back row player then let him play, and give him the occasional back row set, but I don't that he should be allowed to play.

I, myself is a male vollyball player and are school only has a female volleyball team. I think a number of male vollyball players that signed off on a piece of paper (at least enough to make a team) should be able to make there own team. But if there is not enough guys, the male shall be able to play with the girls no matter how big.

I think that saying that a boy can't play on the girls team is like saying a girl can't go and become a soldier, its discrimination, and it shouldn't be judged on his gender. Like, if he was a girl, and had the same strength, they would let him play on the team.
He should be allowed to play on the girls team if there is no boys team. I think the sports should be revised to be all mixed gender sports. Some might say that where be a disadvantage for schools with less boys competing, I have seen many a girl beat a athletic boy in sports. Also the teams that would play each other would have to have the same percentages of boys and girls competing against each other. So, both teams would have even numbers of the same gender on the court or field at once. This would still allow sports to be dominated by men or women with having a few of each gender participate when they want to.
Jenson Daniel should be able to play on the girls vollyball team because girls get to play on boys teams when they want to play so why should't Jenson be able to play volleyball and he can't be to strong.
I think that a boy should be allowed to play on a girls’ team. You can’t say that he is to strong; if a girl was stronger than the other girls would she get kicked off? No she would be allowed to play, so how can a boy be “too strong” to play on the girls’ team. Also there is no boys’ team, so if he wants to play on the team he should be allowed to. I don’t think Jenson should be barred from playing volleyball just because he is a boy, no one would care at all if a girl played on the boys team so why do people care if it is the other way around.

I Think the boy should not be aloud to play volleyball on a girls team. The school should have two different teams one for the boys and another for the girs. It is not fair to have a boy on a girls volleyball team because boys are most likely to be heavy handed and more powerfull then the team. Thats like having a girl in a men hockey team or football team. Males and females have different strength thats why football and basketball is more of a men sport and cheer and gymnatics is more for females.

I think that its entirely reasonable for a boy to play on a girl's team because there is no boy's team. I think more should be done to create a boy's volleyball team. Instead of creating problems, the state should just solve the problem by creating a boy's team. I think that when most people think about volleyball, they see it as what girls would play, just as if someone thought of 'football' they would remember it as a boy's game. But, it's unfair, because its just for the purpose of exercising, making friends, and having fun. Nobody cares about whether or not a team has more strength, and to be punished for that is just not right.
I think that it isn’t fair to keep Jenson from playing on the girl’s team. It isn’t his fault that there is no boy’s volleyball team. If I were in that situation I would be really angry if I wasn’t allowed to play on a team just because I was a different gender, race, or religion. Everybody deserves the same chances. Also, if there was a strong girl they wouldn’t stop her from playing. Jenson obviously really enjoys playing volleyball and I think that they should let him play!

They should either make a boy's team or just let him play on the girls team. What's unfair isn't that he's too strong (which is a pretty stupid reason in my opinion), it's that he's not being allowed to play just because he's a boy.
I can understand why he should be able to play, yet why he should not. Yet, in reality I believe he shouldn't play with the girls. It becomes a safety issue, and girls and boys have different physical strengths. Another contributing factor would be that is it unfair to have a boy on one team, yet on a different team is all girls. By having a boy on the team is almost like a "secret weapon". Unless having boys is considered legal in all places for volleyball then I deem it unfair and should keep girls on the court in competition games.
I think he should be aloud to play on the girls team there isn't a boys team. On my middle school football team there's a girl so he should be aloud to play on the girls volleyball team if that's the sport he wants to play.
I do think that his strength gives him and unfair advantage. I don't think he should be able to play on the team considering its a high school sport opposed to middle school sports where you would see co-ed sports/clubs. High school sports tend to be more competitive unlike middle school as well.

Well if being on the girls team causes a problem then why don't they just make a boy's team. I think maybe he should be able to play on a team with boys with equal or near the same strength as him. If not then the girls on the other teams need to hit the gym more often.
I can not know does Jenson `s strength give his team an unfair advantage or not because I do not know his physical abilities. But I think that he shouldn `t be allowed to play on the girls` team because it violates any rules. If we allow this exception any teams can have as many boys as they want. In my opinion, it is ok to work out with girls, but not to play in games.

I think that they should let the boy play volleyball. The strength excuse has nothing to do with it. There could be a girl who is too strong for volleyball to, but she can play. If the school can’t come up with a boys’ volleyball team then I think he should have the opportunity to play. I think it is cool how he wants to get a scholarship in that sport and I thought schools want the best for their students. So all in all I believe they should let him play and maybe he will encourage other boys to join the sport so we can have boys’ volleyball as a fall sport.

Imagine if you were a girl on the volleyball team but from a different school. How would you feel playing against him? For some people it would be no big deal but there can also be lots of controversy having a guy on the girls volleyball team. Personally i think it would be fun and fine to have a guy on the team but if its the state law then i think they shouls respect that. i think he has good character though, we know he is commited because he is practicing and working out with no pay off during games. Either way people arent going to like it. As long as they are having fun then let things stay the same. I think that he should be able to play on the girls team for many reasons. First off, volleyball is not a sport that has a lot of physical contact so it's not like he could severely hurt an opposing player. Another reason is that he was able to play with the team last year so it should make a difference if he plays with them this year. My last reasoning for thinking that he should be able to play with the girls team is that girls and able to play on guys teams if there is not a team for girls, therefor its only fair if boys are able to play on girls teams if the school does not provide a boys team.

There may be many different view points on if this should be allowed or not. My opinion is that he should not beable to play with the girls. A small part of me says that he should be able to because there isn't a guys team around that he can play on, and also girls can play guy sports. Now, the bigger part of me says that he shouldn't not only because of his strength, but also because he has a height advantage. How strong he is has alot to do with the unfairness. Expessially if he knows the sport good and is a good player, he can really hit the ball hard and puts the other team in a disadvantage.

Based on the Title 9 act that was put in place allowing girls to participate in male sports that do not have female teams, I find it sexist not to allow it to be the other way around. If he really likes volleyball, works hard, and wishes to play it in college, what damage is being done? The other schools have the equal right to have a boy on their team as well. The concern with Jenson being too strong is a bit ridiculous. How is being too strong as a male any different than just being awesome at volleyball? A really strong girl is allowed to play. At any level higher than high school, girls and boys should be separated in a majority of sports, but at a younger age, students should be allowed to participate what they wish.
I believe that there is more than one problem with Jenson being able to play on the volleyball team. I am by no means sexist. I think that there is a safety concern for not only the opposing team during games, but his own team at practice. If Jenson is able to make contact with the ball with proper form, he could potentially hurt somebody. He is playing on a women's high school regulation height net, which is almost a foot shorter than the regulation height for males which only adds to the saftey concern. Also, if they let Jenson play, is there a rule about the limit number of men that can play on a GIRLS volleyball team, if not, then the school could potentially stack the team with boys and take out competition like it's nothing. I do not think that Jenson should be able to play on the girls volleyball team at his school.
I have mixed feelings about Jenson being able to play on the girl's volleyball team. I think that every student should have equal opportunity, which is why I believe that they should let him play if they do not offer it at his school. On the other hand I can see how it can be deemed as a safety concern for people on the opposing team considering a regulation net for the men's team is almost a foot higher. I can debate on both sides of the spectrum but I ultimately think to please everyone they should offer men's volleyball at his school.
Though i'm all for girl power, boys are just generally stronger than girls. Of course it would be fun to have a guy play on the team I see no problem with it, but you have to think about it in realistic terms. Boys just would have more of an athletic advantage.

My dad told me that volleyball isn't bases on strength, it's based on skill and when it comes to volleyball, there really is no need for gender restrictions. So Jenson doesn't have an excuse for NOT playing volleyball. I think those guys who told him he can't play are just being prejudical.
There are different regulatory practices for mens and womens volleyball. Net height, is notably one of those differences. Would the girls be forced to play with a higher net, simply so that he could play? Many men's college volleyball players are recruited from club teams. It would seem like he would get more play time that way. If he's looking to obtain a scholarship, playing on the girl's team isn't going to help him get anything but attention.

I went to a small town that didn't have all sports available and as a female I fought and won the RIGHT to play on the boys' soccer team. They didn't have a comparable sport for females (SOCCER) so they had to let me play. I had and have played soccer my whole life and skills wise, could easily hold my own on the field. As the only female, however, I was subjected to relentless bullying and harrassment from the other players on MY team. Something I was willing to endure to be able to play. He most certainly should be given the RIGHT to compete in a sport he loves and has future dreams about. I don't see that he would give the team a clear unfair advantage and I think that's an insult to the other female players on the team to suggest he is so much stronger or dominating.
If they do not offer vollyball or an alternative sport that he can particapate he should be able to per Title 9 laws. Though I played field hockey and the boys were allowed to play with us in middle school but not in high school for the same reasons the artical mentions, that the boys are to strong. All of us girls thought they should be able to play, but they were not allowed too. Sometimes kids play sports that are not offered at there school at near by schools. Either way I hope he is able to play somewhere.

Personally as a volleyball player I say no. It's an unfair advantage to the other teams. Guys are more agressive than girls. If a girl plays on a guys' sports team, that's not an unfair advantage. Girls are weaker than guys. Also, in male volleyball, the net is raised. So when he plays for the girl's volleyball team, he has a much bigger advantage with the net lower than if he played with a guy's team. There's also men's CLUB volleyball teams. He can get a scholarship off of that, too.

Let him play. I was playing against a cousin in a friendly family game at his graduation from high school. He was a football player, I was chubby freshman music student. He went to spike, me to block...he ended up down on the ground. Was I dizzy? Yes. I blocked the hell out of him though. Put him up against a girl with no fear. There always one on a volleyball team. I wouldn't have asked to take on my cousin, and I was too dizzy to participate in the heckling, but I felt like a bada**.
If he is willing to put the time and effort into the sport, why not? It doesn't matter about how strong someone is necessarily, but how much they are willing to put in the sport
There is a reason its called a girls volleyball. If boys were going to be able to play it would be called a girl/boy volleyball team.
In my own opinion i think they should let him play volleyball. In a boys soccer league we were only two girl. If we could play with boys, why can he play with girl? If there is no way for the school to create a boys volleyball team, then they should let him play with the girls.

just because he's a boy doesn't mean that he shouldn't be able to play if he wants the scholarship for it. the school doesn't have a boy team so let him play, and if you do have him play, only let him play for a small portion of the match then it'll be fairer.

I believe that Jenson's stength may give his team a slight unfair advantage, but one person does not usually decide that fate of a team sport. He should be allowed to play in order to force other schools to allow other boys to play. After awhile, these schools may in turn create male volleyball teams which could create male volleyball for these schools.

It should not matter if he is physically stronger. There are plenty girls who are just as strong as him or even stronger. There are different teams for a reason. I don't want any of those girls to get hurt or for their team to have an advantage. Girls shouldn't be on boys teams for the same reason. Female empowerment is great and all but when it comes down to it, safety should be the number one priority. This school needs to invest in a boys team so he can have equal opportunities.
