Enough to Eat?

Have you noticed changes in your school lunches this year?
New government rules limit the calories that can be served in U.S. school lunches. Friday's show explains the reasons for the rules - and why the result has left students at many schools unsatisfied with their new options.

We'd like to know whether you've noticed a difference in your school's lunches. And if so...is it a good or bad difference?

I completely agree with limiting school lunch calories. People are consuming calories, but not working them off. This can cause obesity... and I cringe at the percentage of American obesity be 2030. Even though it's only a prediction, scientists don't make wild guesses.

I disagree with you because I get hungry in class and sometimes I need to eat something!

I think you should eat in time. The bad habit of you make your calories excesses-ed.

I wouldn't eat the lunches becaus they are rely nasty.

I completly agree with you completly agreeing with limiting lunch calories. I agree with you because my school has very unhealthy food choices.

      • Kelsey

I totally have to disagree with you. Everyone is just grumbling that they don't have enough to eat and end up wasting food. Also, many people just buy milk. Its just wrong. Why can't they just make healthier choices, but also have something kids like?

I have to disagree with you. Kids at my school are not getting enough to eat especially since after lunch we get recess and we are very hungry still. A lot of the athletic kids who play sports are still hungry and may not get enough to eat to go to practice. I have to eat another before practice so i don't starve!

      October 1, 2012 at 11:02 am |
    • Bridget

I disagree with you and agree some people have sports and need the food so they won't be hungry during practice. Then yes some people eat to much and have no sports and COULD cause obesity. think about it 😉

    • Kristy

I actually agree. I think its good because then we could choose healthier foods for ourselves. At least we have healthy food 5 out of 7 days.

  2. Mr Madsen's Sci Tech US History 2 Class

We do not feel that school lunches are adeqaute enough to fill high school students up. At a time when we are growing and need as many healthy calories as we can get, school lunches aren't providing it. Many students are hungry after lunch and resort to unhealthier snacks to fill up. If the school lunches offered more food that was healthy we wouldn't resort to other means to satisfy our appetites!!

Sample Responses: We think that students are not getting enough to eat. We think that they should have a healthy alternative food like pasta for athletes. Poor taste is a major concern. Kids are throwing away their lunch and buying more snacks. Kids are not getting enough to eat and it affects their school work. Some students NEED that meal because it may be the only decent one they get. Schools are losing large amounts of money because kids are not buying school lunches. We need more choices as well as more select meats. Kids are paying more for less food.

We think calories shouls be limited in our school lunches. We have noticed the changes in our school lunches, but they do not bother us. We like the variety and taste.

I think my school has plenty to eat but I think they dont have enough healthy foods. Schools should have a good source of protein, vegtables, fruits, dairy, and a small portion of sugar. Even though I dont eat school lunches, I have seen them.

I agree that's how it should be

I agree with you Abbey. Lately I've been seeing a lot of very unhealthy food for breakfast and lunch at my school. I think they should do a better job.

I don't agree. We're getting plenty to eat it's just our stomachs are so used to the less healthy stuff, they don't feel full with the healthy stuff.

I do agree that we shouldn't eat calories if we are not going to work them off, but that doesn't mean that they have to cut down on how much we eat at lunch. I, for one, eat A LOT, and I don't find the school lunches filling enough. I always find myself having to spend extra money on snacks just to get near enough to eat, and I think that's kind of a scam, just like making us pay extra for more than one packet of ketchup. Instead of giving us less food to eat, just give us healthier choices.

    September 28, 2012 at 11:03 am |
    • Blake

That is a really good idea, i never thought of that. my parents are always complaining on how i spend too much money on extra food, that they are making me eat less. It isn't good to starve yourself, but it is good to eat healthy

      September 29, 2012 at 10:34 pm |
  8. Alivia

At our school we have to take fruit and milk even if we don't eat or drink them and just throw them away. This is partially a waste because some people just throw them away, but on the other hand it is good to tempt kids to try fruit and get that in their system for the day.

    September 28, 2012 at 11:03 am |
    • Blake

Our school is a lot like that too. We can only reject two things too, so whatever the people don't eat just gets wasted. I think we should be able to reject what we want, so it isn't a waste in the end

      September 29, 2012 at 10:36 pm |
      • Blake

Our school is like that too. Most people just get an apple because it counts as 2 servings of fruit, but they walk by the garbage and throw it away before they sit down. Sometimes they charge us more for not getting 2 servings of fruit and vegetables.

        October 1, 2012 at 11:49 am |
  9. Garrett

I personally pack my own lunch now, not because the food was nasty or because it was healthy, i bring my own because i would be hungry again within an hour. I think there isn't enough food at our school lunch to "fill" my up.

    September 28, 2012 at 11:03 am |
  10. Ashley

I feel like when I get my lunch, that I never get enough to eat. I am forced to take stuff that I will not eat or I will be charged for it, and I don't eat any vegetables and am very limited on what fruits I eat. I wish that the school lunch would be back to the way it was, where people weren't forced to take stuff that they do not like, and that they offer things that all of the students will eat. That way, I would get more to eat and I wouldn't be starving by the time that I got home.

  11. Wyatt

These calorie limits are ridiculous, the theory is good but kids like me with a high metabolism are not getting enough to eat. Some people Need more calories than others and the new lunches just are not enough.

    September 28, 2012 at 11:04 am |
  12. Jonas

II have seen a huge difference in my school's food this year. I don't have enough food to eat and as an athlete, I need all the energy I can get. I feel sluggish and tired. I feel I was better off with the old food. Don't get me wrong, people do need to change their eating habits, but the government doesn't have to tell us how to eat.

    September 28, 2012 at 11:04 am |
    • Kristen

I agree. But we take a snack for after school to tie us over until practice is over. You're not suppost to have food in your locker, but if you aren't eating it,and if you keep it somewhat hidden, to whare they don't know you have it, it is totally fine. Our coaches are teachers, and the encourage us to have food in our locker for after school.

      September 29, 2012 at 10:40 pm |
      • Mary

Exactly the problem isn't really at school, it mostly when kids get home they snack and eat junk and stuff like that

I like having more fruit and more veggies!!!!!! I love the pizza with pepperoni.

I think that we should have bigger school lunch because I do get Hunger after school and I do not have a apple at home

      September 28, 2012 at 5:30 pm |
  14. Ryan

Are school lunches have changed for the worst. Do they really think that one piece of pizza and a orange, plus milk would feed us. Well it didn't feed me I would still be hungry right after lunch was over, so now i bring my own lunch. That way i wont be starving at my football practice.

    September 28, 2012 at 11:05 am |
  15. Elizabeth

It depends on the person to be obese, not the government to decide for you.

  17. McKaily

There is a large difference in school lunch. I have liked some of the new things they have added to a menu that make lunch on the go easier for me, but when I was told I had to take a milk when I did not want one was very frustrating. I ended up just throwing the milk away which was a waste, but even when I offered it to other students they didn't want it either so throwing it away was my last option.

  18. Colby

Yes, my school went from too much food to not enough food. Last year we had almost each compartment filled with two things. This year (2012) each area on our tray went down. Now we have empty surfaces on them. The first time we had pizza, they put red and green peppers on them and also onions. It was disgusting... almost no one ate it. What if they could make it better? They should check and make sure the apples are ripe because somtimes they are "yuck". They should take the oranges out of the salads and put cheese on the broccoli. I really hope that the school lunches will get better.

    September 28, 2012 at 11:07 am |
  19. Hunter

I think that our lunches are to small they should give us bigger slices or pizza or whatever. I think this is dumb its not the school fault kids are getting fat. its all parnets fault so blame them

    September 28, 2012 at 11:08 am |
    • Mary

Depending on the person and the parent, the parent may be to blame but parents shouldn't be all to blame. It's not all there fault that their kid or kids are overweight

      October 1, 2012 at 3:04 pm |
  20. Seth

I also think that limiting school lunch calories is a good idea, but when they do that they cut the amount of food there is so kids are hungry about two hours after lunch

    September 28, 2012 at 11:08 am |
    • Courtney

I soooo agree with you because the lunches are changing.
      And are getting worse.

  22. Sarah

I think cutting calories too much would not be a good idea if the students had a sport or activity after school. They would need the proper amount of calories to make it through the day without getting sick.

    September 28, 2012 at 11:10 am |
    • MIkayla

After eating a school lunch for my lunch I get sick and I'm unable to make it through the day. So I have started to make my own lunch so I know I have enough food. My school doesn't provide enough food for me to make it through the day!

      • Juan

I'm never hungary in the morning, so i don't eat a big breakfast, I never have. So when lunch comes around I'm starving. And now, scince we dont get a lot to eat, I'm even more hungary at the end of the day.

        September 29, 2012 at 1:21 pm |

I agree I have been getting hungry after lunch

    September 28, 2012 at 11:12 am |
  24. Mr.Hartricks 2nd period class

We think that school food is not enough to eat because sometimes the school food is not very appetizing and some children will throw there food away and be hungry later. Most student bring their lunches now-days beacuase they dont like the food that the school serves...in a way the school is loosing money because less kids are getting school food

    September 28, 2012 at 11:12 am |
    • Hailey

Our school is losing money too

      September 29, 2012 at 1:22 pm |
  25. Julia

I think cutting some calories on school lunches is a very good idea because at most middle and high schools there is no recess and by the time the day is over your food is settled and consuming too many calories is not good and it is not helping Americas obesity rate so being healthier is always good.

    September 28, 2012 at 11:12 am |
  26. Iain

I think that it's a great idea to cut calories and boost healthy eating as well as lowering the amounts of people with obesity and bad eating habits. let's put an end to obesity!

i agree about limiting lunches becouse theres a lot of fat kids and stuff

    September 28, 2012 at 11:15 am |
    • Will

I kind of agree with that, but it shouldn't be the governments choice to do that, that is you're own choice, if someone doesn't want to be fat, they shouldn't rely on the government to rely on. They need to change that on their own. But if the government wants to cut lunches, they can, and did. If they don't think that they are getting enough food for their bodies, they can take their own lunch. For the people who don't want to be fat, but are, might think the change is a good thing, because it helps them. I'm not saying that all people who do think it's a good thing is fat though. You do have a point william and i like it. I'm not fat at all and i think that the change is a good thing because it might help people with their eating habits and become healthier people.

there defiantly not giving kids enough to eat. kids want to eat at lunch to be full. the schools are not giving enough to do so. some kids who dont drive stay after school from about 3 to 10 at night with a empty stomach. kids have after school sports that they wait for while they are hungry the whole time.

I think the school lunches are good, but I miss eating the pudding and Sun Chips. I like the sweet potato fries. They changed the menu – I don't like it and really want them to change it back. This is why our football team is losing!

I don't think we should limit the school lunch calories. It is the parents who are not limiting the amount of junk food their kids are taking in and letting the kids eat "their heart out" at home and not at school. Also I do not think that the non-obese population should suffer from the smaller portions like me.

I disagree with the changes in school lunches because the law makes the serving sizes smaller, and it isn't filling. The amount of food that they give us is more fit for kindergarteners than middle school students.

My scholars viewed the CNN Student piece on student lunches today and all agreed that they are hungry after lunch. One student said they only recieve one main item, one vegetable, and one piece of fruit. They haven't noticed a great change between Elementary and Middle School food choices. One bright scholar believes the students should mobilize and advocate for more diverse food choices.

I have noticed the changes in the school lunches this year because I am a active athlete. My family doesn't have the fund to buy home made meals. So I get the school lunches because they are cheeper. But what is good to get lunch that doesn't even feed me enough for practice afterschool?

I agree with cutting down school calories and lunches. There are a lot of children 16 and under that are very uncomfortable with their bodys, That's sad at this age.

i think the school lunches. they should eat their food instead of wasting they food its a waste of money. and their parents money

  58. Keagen

School lunches have gotten to small. kids are getting hungry after lunch, and those with after school sports have to play sports while hungry. People consume calories more at home than at school. So schools giving us less food for lunch is doing nothing.

i agree but instead of putting more food on there plate you should put vegetables or fruit or maybe even allow them (if they are not completely full) to get another serving.

I think that people should be smart and eat the food that they are given so there not hungery after lunch and blame it on the lunch people. That's what I think.

    • Brittney

I disagree with you because the cooks need to get better food for us and I think thats why kids eat alot when they get home. The government needs to supply better and healthier food that actually tastes good!!!!!!!

I don't think kids are obese because of school food, but the decision they make outside school. The food choices do not taste good and it is just making people throw it away. They are really just trying to get us to buy more a la carte food items. The school lunch price is the same but for less food also.

I agree with it because if you cut down on calories it will help put a stop to obesity. I think the kids are still hungry after lunch because they only eat the parts that they like, and they don't eat the fruits and vegetables

I think that we should have more to eat at school like a snack bar or a salad bar so we wont be so hungry. And also Carl you should ask our principals at our school and tell them we think they should give us more lunch to eat.

    September 28, 2012 at 11:47 am |
  68. Magaly

I think we do have enough to eat but since they say food with alot of grease in it,makes you fuller thats why people think we dont get enough to eat since there giving us "healthier" food...

  69. Derrick

in my school we barly get enough food for maybe a snack? it costs so much to eat at school and barely get anything to eat at all and its way cheaper to go buy your own food and actually get a good meal that will be filling or atleast to stop the hunger untell later. the schools arent supplying there students with enough food to eat and eventauly no one will want to eat at school because no matter what the calories are if they dont like it then they wont eat it and we all know we all have a picky side with food.

I have noticed the change in our food ways and the diets. Right now, we are not getting enough food and there is to many choices on the vegetables. I agree with the school calories idea but I can`t stand not getting to eat as much food as I did last year.

I teach high school. Due to the new restrictions many students have quit buying school lunch, and either bring food in with them in their bookbags or don't eat lunch at all. We have many students, particularly athletes, who are starving by mid-practice b/c their school lunch wasn't enough to keep them full through practice.
Students are also choosing to spend money in the vending machines rather than pay for food that they don't like and don't want to pay for.
The quality and taste of the food has been affected along with the change in portion size. On average, a teenage boy can burn up to 1000 calories in a day. Limiting school lunch calories is not a smart way to insure academic success b/c how can a student perform well when he or she is hungry?
School used to be in the one place a child was guaranteed NOT to go hungry. Since these changes, we see many–and I'm talking TONS of kids going hungry.

  73. Ornat Class 3

My scholars feel that their school lunch is unacceptable and needs to be reformed. One hundred percent of my scholars feel hungry after lunch. They see the food as being too expensive for the low quality. The hotdogs are green, the hot sauce tastes like rubber, and there is no salt and pepper provided. My scholars want more diverse choices and a longer lunch period.

    September 28, 2012 at 12:48 pm |
  74. Mr. Reap's Class

Our class feels that the school lunches have declined in quality. Further, we are forced to take fruits and veggies even if we do not want them. While the idea is nice, it is hard to force high school students to eat things they do not want. What is even more disturbing is the amount of WASTE this is creating. Many of us see students throwing away perfectly good food that they are forced to take when there are many people around the world who would benefit from it. Please change these policies and let us make our own lunch choices!

I agree. Even though I'm brought every day, I think they put healthy stuff on there like carrots, broccoli, and grapes. They have a container that contains apples or bananas. I used to be tray so when I was done getting my tray I would get an apple from the container. But sometimes it was soft and yucky.

I notice that we used to have 2 things of food. We can only have one thing we can choose from one but I can understand because kids are getting big. I wish that we have water but the serve milk. I heard that water flushes your kidneys out and to drink a gallon a day.

I understand that Michelle Obama wants to cut down obesity. That’s obviously the reason why the food law was created. Indeed the food law is a key tool, but I personally never get full! As soon as the child gets home they head strait to the kitchen for more food. This is just ridiculous.

    September 28, 2012 at 2:58 pm |
  78. stan

I personally believe that our school should have more food choices because sometimes we are hungry like thirty minutes after we eat. I mean no harm to the school system but we should be able to enjoy foods that we actually like and enjoy. It’s bad enough that we are not able to eat when we want to so it should be fair that we can eat what we want. Our school’s principal should be ashamed that we don’t get filled when we eat. The government made a terrible choice.

I have noticed that our school has changed our school lunches. This is good, but also a bad thing. It is good because they give us more health foods. But some people do not eat them, they just throw them away. People who don’t eat so much health food would go hungry during their classes. They should have better food like cake, yorgert, and etc.

I completely understand that the government is only trying to help out, but I don't think they should tell us what we can and cant eat. I have noticed my school lunches getting smaller. I think I get enough to eat and only have a burrito.People need to cut back on food if there eating enough eat only a little at a time then your stomach get smaller

    September 28, 2012 at 3:47 pm |
  121. Tetra

I have noticed a difference. Even though I normally take a lunch, I have gone to the cafeteria and ate before. Pizza slices are now whole wheat, and smaller. And I had spaghetti once and I ate the salad and green beans, plus the spaghetti, and I was still starving. There wasn't a crumb on my plate. I am really skinny, too. The portions aren't even big enough for first graders, and we are middle schoolers. I know most kids would eat probably four or five at least of Pizza Hut, yet they give us one tiny, low protein, low fat, low carbs slice. That tastes nasty.

  122. mat

No we don't get a lot to eat at school school food today we had pizza and an ice cream cup that's it we have a salad bar but none of that food is good our school lunch cost 1.75 they need to give us more food.if food cost that much monet they should give us more

I love the calorie cut back, but if they want us to actually eat the food. Why not find a way for us to like it. Who eats beets...plain. That's what they gave us beet cooked. If you want to makes us eat healthily make it food

    September 28, 2012 at 3:48 pm |
  124. Chelsea

I honestly don't mind the new way they are serving food. They are trying to get kids to be healthier. Its not like they are going to die just because they didn't get to eat a ton of food at lunch. If people don't like the portion size they should just bring lunch from home.

What I think is that everyone should eat the amount of food that they need. You can't just eat everything u get full really easy, what I think is that we should have little snacks and eat them when we do get hungry. Most of all you get more hungry when you are playing a sport or just running around that's why students get hungry all the time.

    September 28, 2012 at 3:49 pm |

At my school I get a sub sandwich with lettuce, banana peppers, pickles, turkey, and mayo. But after that I usually get a brownie and that personally isn't enough for me because I eat a lot and im still average weight for a 13 year old guy.(:

The portions of food at my school have gotten a lot smaller. If the school isn't going to provide kids with food they like, they'll just buy junk food other places, so there's no point in the school trying to cut down on the amount of calories served.

I think that limiting the proportion size for lunch is wrong. I've noticed that during class my starts growling and its hard to stay focused in the educational process. They school board might just as well change the name from (Lunch time) to Snack time

im glad that they cut down on the food because then the kids wont get obese and then there parents try to sue the schools saying that there kid is to over weight because the school is feeding them to much food and leting then have to much junk food.but the real thing is the students just eat the faty foods and throw away all there fruits and vegies.

I think it's a good idea to cut down on calories, but I'm always hungry after lunch. The cafteria at my school has changed many items. And that includes the stuff we need to stay focused. So that's the bad part about cutting down on everything. And I think they should atlease give us something to keep us full.

Our Schools Lunches Aren't Enough By The End Of The Day I'd Say Half Of My School ONLY Ate Brownies For Lunch Also I Feel The Prices Of The Food Effects It In Some Way I Mean $1 For A Water Bottle But .25 For A Gatoraid I Mean That's Not Bad But Still Worse Then Water, .75 For A Brownie Isn't That Bad But I Guess That's The Point.

I have not seen any changes in our school lunches and thats why I bring my own lunch. The school lunches dont taste good for one and they don't look very nutritous or even edible. So I want the school lunches to change so I can actually enjoy a school lunch and be full afterward. Last year I found a little tiny bone in my chicken nugget and ever since I never ate the food in the cafeteria again. Hopefully they really do change the lunches because some students don't even eat at all during lunch time and I think that is a big problem.

Yes, the food is unhealthy. Why offer us more if it is unhealthy.

I think my School does NOT supply enough food. I'm always hungry after lunch and after school, my stomach hurts because I'm hungry. I think my school needs to be like it was before.

I have not noticed changes in our school lunches because I bring my own lunch. The school lunches dont look nutritional and they dont taste good either. I have heard from a friend that they have raw hamburgers and too many bones in the chicken. Those examples are why people dont eat lunch. Alot of kids who dont bring lunches from home dont eat at all and I think that is a problem. It is not healthy for them at all. So, hopefully they will change the school lunches so people wont starve at lunch, or get food poisoning. To finish this comment up, I would also like to put that people arent even full after lunch and they go home and devour there food they have from home. Thank you for listening.

I have the same problem at my school and I TOTALLY agree with her!!!! Once I almost ate a green cold hotdog and I AM STILL GROSSED OUT!!!! The lunch foods to me arent even edible!!1

I think the food is enough to fill you up.The food is healthy.

I think people are getting to "used" to eating more then they should outside of school. So students are feeling like they are getting enough to eat with a school lunch.

Well I do agree that we shouldn't eat so many calories if we aren't going to work them off. Instead of giving us less food to eat, just give us healthier choices. I don't think it's completely the schools fault though. Many children just go home and eat more. So, I don't think it's a good think to cut down on food just more healthy choices..

Yes, I have noticed changes. For some reason my school has cut down on their choices for lunch. They don't taste very good and they're not even nutricous. I have started to bring my own lunch because of this.

i think that some times they do but other times they don't. so i think they should add a bit of food but not alot or make us 2 meals!

Yes i did notice that they tried to make lunches healthier but instead of making it healthier they made it smaller to lower calories. Now we aren't getting enough to eat and we aren't getting our moneys worth of food. Also we start to get tired and hungry with in two hours after eating lunch. I think they should either lower prices so we can get a snack or make it healthier and give us more food.

Yes, i have noticed some bad changes here in our school. First of all, Bad food choices are happening in lunch and BTW the breakfast is rotten and expired! So i recommend to bring your own lunch even though it is not healthy. But nutrition foods are okay but not any fat foods like 825 calories in the High School that they serve. I am a teacher, and my students want to be healthy like athletes who serve in the US Olympics. Also the foods they serve are really small so this is why bad changes are happening in my school.

I am getting enough to eat. The only diference is that the bun and the crust on the pizza is whol grain. My school is small so lunches dont cost as much and half or more is homemade. Also our teacher lets us have a snack everyday so we dont get hungery. This is Isaak sharing my opinion. 😉

hi, so at our school i have noticed ALOT of changes. like:
    1) the peas that i got today were FROZEN!!!!! they still had frost on them! they could at least spend 2 minutes cooking our food!
    2) a few weeks ago, we had a chicken ceaser salad, with lettuce on the bottom, some parmesan cheese, and little chicken pieces. i didnt get any chicken, and my friend who was sitting next to me, and the supposedly chicken was HAM!!!!
    3) there was also hair in my cheese!!!! GRODE!! IT HAPPENNED 2 DAYS IN A ROW!
    thanks for reading this 🙂

I disagree with the portion of foods. Kids get really hungry very quickly so they need more food. I also want to say that they need more healthy options becuase child obesity is really high.

I am Lactose-Intolerant. This really effects me because I am forced to buy either a vegetable or soy milk. Today they ran out of the type of soy milk I like, so I couldn't get a drink unless I gave up my fruit. Lucky for me, a cafeteria lady bought a water for me. Therefore, I think this is very unfair, especially for students with food allergies/intolerances.

I believe kids should eat more of there lunches but it depends on how hungry they really are because if there really hungry they should eat a lot but on the other hand some of the kids could just be complaining.

i do not get full at lunch. I saw that one episode of dr. Oz with Michelle obama and she says its healthier i think it is to, but i think children need to get full at lunch time. And besides the more your hungry the more you eat sweets which is not healthy for you.

My school has had a very big change in our lunches. We can't go through the line without picking a fruit or vegetable(which costs extra). Also there are smaller portions, which sometimes the students pay extra money for more food. Most of the students are going back to packing lunches, including me.

There has been a huge change in school lunches and I think that it was a great idea. Changing our daily calories benefit us by not eating over our limit nor under if we eat all that is given. It reduces obesity and although students may not like it, at least it is healthier for us.

I have noticed the difference and I do not agree with this because we are teenagers and we have a high metabolism, this allows us to eat more than average adults, but it doest mean we can eat anything we want.

the new school menus aren't nearly as good as they were. All the furits that they're serving now are never ripe, and most kids probably don't much care for the types of veggies the schools now have to serve. kids aren't eating nearly as much and most kids that i know are taking cold lunches now. I think i might start doing the same.

  198. Mrs. Murphy's class (Cut Bank, MT)

We think elementary kids may be getting enough to eat, but high school kids are not, especially the kids who have practice after school. When we're hungry after school, some of us make poor choices eating unhealthy foods. Then, we're not hungry for dinner. For some kids around here, lunch is their main meal of the day because their families don't have enough money for groceries. So, they need a good lunch.

The school lunches are to small now that they changed. i can understand why they want kids to eat less calories, and I think that's great. But, kids also need to have enough food to keep them form going hungry again 10 minutes later. The schools need more food, whether it's healthy or not.

You see CNN, my school, along with other schools, give us processed food. In my opinion. I have started to bring hime lunches because of the loss of food. They make sure that you "have 3 items everyday", but you see school, we are growing... we need to eat! I know that the calories are at a limit, so if that is all they will give us, why don't they just get different products or something? I just wish they would make a change in the government!

Kids are getting hungry after lunch for two reasons. Yes, one is because school doesn't give enough food but the other is because no one will even EAT school lunches at my school because it tastes so bad. The food that IS halfway decent isn't enough to keep you full because there's barely any of it. Kids are hungry because they wont eat the food that tastes bad and you don't get enough of food that does taste decent.

I have seen a change in our school lunch and it's caused almost half of our school to bring a lunch with more food so even thought they changed it people can still most likely get obese.

there have been lots of changes in the school lunches trying to make them healthy. For example we have wheat buns and are required to have a serving of vegetables or fruits but some people just throw it away. Some people do not even get a lunch, not having any money, so it kind of is up to students. If you do not remember your lunch number you have to go to the end of the line until you remember it but if you dont remember it, you don't eat lunch.

I think that the idea of cutting calories is great but this is not the right approach! I often see my classmates hungry and tried for the rest of the day because of the smaller portions.

  216. Alanna

If the government wants to get kids to eat healthy, then they need to give us healthier options instead of just taking away things like our french fries and not giving us anything to fill that void. Our meals have gotten smaller, not healthier. I am convinced that I have spent more money on snacks out of the vending machine this year than I have on my actual "lunch", and this is even after having a full breakfast in the morning. I am all for fewer calories, but not if it means that my stomach will still be growling after I return to class.

    September 28, 2012 at 7:16 pm |
  217. Jessica

In my school, the lunches have always been pretty unhealthy. They serve some kind of potato side with every meal, every day. Not to mention the pizza being the consistency of cardboard. With this new calorie limit, the options will probably only get worse, even if it means the food will be a little bit healthier. Although lunches are not always under the school’s control, they should try to make the meals both delicious and nutritious.

I think that students should have the right to pick what they want to eat if they want to eat pudding instead of fruit let them...I think that if a student wants to watch his diet he can but i dont think that the goverment should make you wach your diet...Students should get what they want to eat beacause if you give them veggies and stuff they willl probably throw them away therfore wasting food.

I have noticed that our scool lunch have been getting smaller.Iget hungry after school so I have to buy more snacks , and this much more unhealthy. I think it is right to lower the calorie level but you should just get a food that has just as much but healthier.

I think that my school gives us enough lunch. The reason that kids get hungry, is because they don't eat everything that is given to them. I am currently a sophomore in high school and I buy lunch every now and then, but I see my friends buy lunch everyday. We are a bunch of soccer girls, so if the school lunches keep us energetic until 7 at night, then kids should have no reason to be hungry again!

I have seen a great change in the lunches. The portions have gotten smaller causing me to have to buy from the al carte at my school. Maybe this isn't about having students eat healthier and the obesity in America but the money the schools need. Perhaps they are serving smaller portions, so students will buy more, making more money.

I think that kids should be able to get full and go for seconds on the main meal. When we have a healthy snack we should be able to have ranch with broccoli and celery. We do not need the government telling what to eat. I think teaching healthy eating habits is good, but do not mandate it.

I Think The Schools Aren't At Fault Here The Students are The Who Choose To Pick only A Pizza And Nothing Else When the Have A choice To Have Fruit Or A small Salad So The School Doesn't Have To Increase The Food That Students Eat when They Have The Choice.

  228. Zoreily

There's both a good side and a bad side to limiting the calories that student's eat, The good side is that students wont have to consume a whole lot of calories as usual. But the downside is by limiting the calories and replacing them with healthier foods that have less calories will completely make the students feel like they are not getting much too eat because there a certain things students will not go near or get that food. The conclusion is that people are just used to getting served foods many calories than getting served foods that have less calories.

I don't buy school lunches at my school because i did see a difference in the school lunches and the difference isn't good, they should just use the the same amount of calories and put more good foods with less calories.

my highschool has been have more healthy foods like fruits and I think that the schools should let the kids pick how much they want so this way they get enough to eat but also make right choes

  233. Inga

Getting enough to eat is an issue, although I think that a bigger issue is getting enough time to eat. One of my friends sat down after being in line for school lunch right as everyone else was leaving, but I also do think that cutting calories is not the way to handle obesity, especially in middle schoolers like me.

The school lunch might have changed but it's for the better . Too many calories aren't good and too little calories aren't good either , still we should try and eat healthy foods like fruits and vegetables. My school lunch has changed and they are serving more fruits and also juice , if you get a healthy breakfast in the morning then with just a little healthy serving for lunch will fill you up .

    September 28, 2012 at 9:17 pm |
  235. Maya

I am getting less food at school and it really bothers me how the government is taking over our lives by limiting what we eat. Limiting calories may cut down on the amount of food given therefore making kids hungry and perform worse during school. If the lunches are smaller kids may start to pack their own lunches with more food. Also, giving kids healthier food does not mean that they want to eat it. Kids can throw away their entire lunch if they do not like the food.

I don't get enough to eat because school lunches aren't very good. One time i looked at my burger and the meat was totally pink so i didn't eat it.

At our school we get served lunch at 12:35 so we are very hungry when we get to lunch. But we only get served 2 sides and about 5 ounces of meat. We are hungry again by recess.

Even though it is not as big of a problem, there are many students who are under-weight, too. If they restrict school portions, they are not only affecting people who are already okay, but also those who need to gain weight as well.

Our school lunches are not good. At the beginning of the year we had to take a fruit and a vegtable even if you didn't eat. I mean give that to the people who want it. If you didn't get a fruit they would make you go back in the line and get one.

I don't think the student can blame the schools for being hungery after lunch, because school lunchs has enough food for the students to eat. The students just dont eat at school like they should.

The new changes to our school lunch includes adding more fruits and vegetables while cutting back on fat and carbs. Students who dislike fruits and vegetables don't eat them and are hungry and hour after lunch. To solve hunger my shcool features and Al La Carte. This cart contains foods that taste good and are bought for only a quarter. This cart should be added to every school so stuedents don't leave lunch hungry.

I think my school's lunches is the perfect portion size. I don't understand why people are saying that it isn't enough. The cafeteria food is packed with carbs and calories so a small amount of the food is the proper serving. I think what causes obesity in kids is the lack of portion control. So what if you are hungry for a couple of hours? When you get home, have a healthy snack like a piece of fruit. Why do kids always have to feel full all the time? At my school, a piece of fruit is offered to you along with the lunch. Most kids don't take it, but if they are hungry, they should eat the fruit rather than chips from the vending machine. When they eat the fruit they will notice how they know they are still hungry but they don't feel it. Children complain that they're STARVING but I think they are just exaggerating.

Since we have the ability to leave campus to go get food and come back, that's what a lot of people do instead of eating at school. Our lunches aren't all that bad sometimes but when you get your food and eat it its not enough because you still get hungry or still are hungry.

I have noticed some changes from middle school to high school this year. It seems like the foods that are served are unhealthy and, I think, sometimes, inedible. Just because the school system has to feed us healthier 'foods' doesn't mean that they can't be good. I think that because they aren't as good as some used to be, most kids just throw away the food and still end up hungry if not more hungry. Most people are starting to pack their own lunches that are filling and healthy.

When it comes to childhood obesity, it all boils down to personal choice. If a kid's parents want him/her to be obese, so be it. That's their decision. I do not believe that the government has any right in which to tell us how much to eat and what to eat.

At my school I think we still have enough to eat, but the choices are limited to corn from a can, carrots from a bag, and frozen green beans. there are lmost no carbohydrates in our meals. I very much dislike the fact that the government is controlling what the kids eat. I believe that the schools or district should decide what to serve and how much to serve at lunch.

There is definitely enough to eat. Although most kids will eat the food that tastes good and though away the fruits and vegetables.

I think that schools aren't giving students kids enough food because, kids aren't allowed to get what amount of food they want. We have to get one of any thing we want to eat that they serve. Kids are going hungry because, of these changes. Many kids are bringing their own food because they can bring what ever they want if their allowed by the approval of their parents.

At my age and height I'm supposed to be having about 2500 calories a day. With this limit I need to eat 1700 calories worth which is very hard, and believe it or not, I'm not a fan of big macs. If I'm trying to get by on something actually healthy, like salad, I'd need to eat a ton. Instead, in order to reach that goal of calories, I need to eat something unhealthy with tons of preservatives and other unhealthy things. This just isn't right.

I don't agree because students should have a choice of what to eat and not to throw away lunches

    September 29, 2012 at 1:15 pm |
  259. Holly

I do see a difference in our school lunches. We can get as many fruit and vegtables as we want, but we can only reject two things. We have quite a few choices two choose from, and people get so many fruits and vegtables (because they dont get enough food) that they are throwing away more then last year. We are suppost to eat so many calories a day, and by cutting down lunches at school, our families have to buy more for dinner. Even the prices went up ten cents for the lunches, and we get less. Some people don't even eat to prove a point. A lot of kids are also bringing lunches from home. In many sports we play, we have to run a lot just because one person on the team did something not right. Every time we run, we burn more and more calories. We need begger lunches so people don't starve theirselves. The good athletes need more food at lunch and aren't getting what they need so they're practically becoming annorexic.
If the person wants to eat a lot, that's their choice, it shouldn't be the governments choice.

I am glad that the goverment cares about us and tries to keep us healthy, but they really shouldn't be limiting what we eat. Kids can't focus and pay attention in class if they are hungry! Alot of kids dont like veggies that much and thats all they serve you now.

I think people should worry about how many calories they eat and give kids more food so they will not be hungry.School cooks want to give kids more food, but the calorie limit wont let them. They can't even give kids ranch for their dressing or they can pick mustard or ketchup not both! Kids before lunch are starving and all they can think about is food, nothing changes afterword.

I noteced that at my school some kids throw away a lot of food, and I do to. It's beacause it doesn't taste good. We also have ahleates at our school who eat the same amout as everyone esle, but htey need more calories to participate in their sports. Yeah , I totally see a difference in our school lunches ! It's outragious ! There's close to no food on my plate anymore ! I hate it ! I truly think government should stay out of schools ! I total disagree, with the school lunches. I'm an athlete, and i have athletics right after lunch. During athletics, i am starving during athletics. The government has no right telling us what we can and what we can't eat. It's our bodies not theirs. Its ok they are cutting down on sugar, but that doesn't mean to make it were we can't have any sugar.

Although the new government rules may be aimed to improve students' health, the different lunches served in schools today may not make much of a difference. Many students, including me, find these foods unsatisfactory. So, we either bring our own lunches, skip eating lunch all together, or eat at a fast-food restaurant after school.

Schools portians are way to small in my opinian. I used to go home full, now, i'm hungry. If lunches are to small, kids go home and have junk food as a snack, more lunch equals less snacks. And less snacks equal mor obbesity.

I agree with school limiting the calories student could take per a meal. However, it's not going to change what the students normally eat. Students don't get vegetables or fruit if they don't like. If the school wants to make their students to have healthy diet, it's not about the limit they write on a paper. They have to change the menus and stop giving students junk foods. If they don't, I don't think it's going to make any big process.

I have definatly seen a differecnce in our school's lunches. To me, it's a good difference. We used to get so many sugary things for lunch, it was unbelivable. Kelsey, Jasmine and Allysa say that the change is bad. They think that more people are going to starve because most people don't eat enough and end up burning it off at practice after school.
Mathew thinks the change is good. He thinks that the people who don't do sports, like himself, eat less, so they are inspired to choose healthier things.
The rest of the class thinks that the change is bad, because they are hungry by seventh hour and have to pay more for extras.

First off, I really want to say, that it is NOT the parents' fault that their children are obese, the child needs to take care of themselves at one point. Their parents will not always be there to tell their kid what to eat and what NOT to eat. However, I do agree that the school lunch has made a turn for the worse. I do have fast metabolism and I burn off the calories really fast, also, as many people have stated, the lunch is terrible enough that they don't want to eat it. They end up wasting food and wasting school funds. Then, there are also the people who bring their own lunches.

We've definitely noticed a drastic change in out school lunch. We're forced to get two fruits, when we never eat them. They're basically asking us to waste food that could be used towards someone who doesn't even have any food. They also decreased the calories for this school year, and we have a lot of the same things every day. Also, even when they supply us with sandwiches, they give us fun buns to put them on. We always have wheat bread, and everythings much more developed.. but not necessarily in a good way.

I believe we are getting fewer calories than we have before. School lunches have only got smaller and worse through the years. Even with the fruit, our lunches’ aren’t enough for most students. Athletic students need the energy and motivation to get them through practice or games, and with the less calories of the lunch, students are less motivated. Now a day’s students are all about their hobbies or after school activity, and with the right amount of food they can get through the day and feel joyful. With the new school lunches, students are packing and eating their own food. Fewer calories mean less energetic students or less athletic kids. In my opinion our school lunches need to have more but with fruit too. It is not hard to have more food and fruit to go with it, along with water or milk. Students shouldn’t have to deprived themselves of food and be miserable throughout the rough day. These new lunches are only making it worse for them to stay awake in class and go to any after school hobbies/sports. We need more choices, more food, and more food in our cafeteria then less of everything.

Hi.Im a student in Japan.maybe you know, Japanese food is low calories, so we've never concerned about school lunch carolies. so im really suprised to hear the news. I think it's really big problem. You know, eating meat use a lot of a lot of water we cant see. now, the world face to 'not enogh water' problem. so we have to know how to eat in right way, good for envorioment way.. Using a lot of vegetable teach student how to cook and eat a lot of vegetable instead of meat, It's really important education! isnt it??

  295. Tabitha

I think it's pretty much a universal thing that cafeterias make kids take all the necessary items in hopes that we'll actually eat it, but really all we do is waste it by throwing it away. I agree with the logic, and I understand that they're trying to make kids healthier, but the real kicker in this situation is that we just make our own decisions. No one can force us to like vegetables, and we go off our own preferences. It's kind of like how no one can force people to exercise–in the end, we make our own choices about our health habits. The school lunch issue can possibly make a small difference, but it's not like we're all suddenly going to become magazine-model healthy overnight.

Every "problem" and "complaint" about the new school lunch policy is based on a very specific circumstance – the government's job is to do whats best for the people as a whole. The government CANNOT please and satisfy everyone. The being said, the FREE school lunch program was created to provide low income students with a hot meal. If your family can afford to provide you with a lunch, please stop complaining! The government's role has never been to feed the students of middle income families, who can and have the ability to provide their children with adequate nutritional intake.
In addition, physiologically, if your body is used to taking in more calories than its requires, once you reduce your caloric intake, your body is going to be "hungry". But don't be fooled! You don't necessarily need more calories. Obviously if you take in 3,500 calories/day and eat a cheeseburger and fries for lunch, your body will THINK it needs more to eat when you feed yourself salad, a sandwich and fruit. But this doesn't mean you need to eat more. Your body needs to readjust to obtaining the proper amount of nutrition.
All in all, the new policy isn't meant to "hurt" or "deprive" anyone of food. The new guidelines are based on the actual caloric needs of the average student. Yes, there are variations to the caloric needs of kids. But again, its NOT the government's job to provide every student an specifically catered meal to their SPECIFIC nutritional requirements. And let's be honest here...American students are not performing well in math, science, and reading compared to other countries world wide...and if I'm not mistaken, many countries that perform better than the US in these academic categories DO NOT provide free food to thier students. What's the correlation b/t quality of school lunches and academic performance?

Unfortunately, I always bring my lunch to school no matter what. That being said, I have not had a chance to try the new lunch choices we have. Just from looking at the food, however, I can tell that changes have been made. I do feel that i has not made any type of change in anyone's eating habits for 2 reasons. One, the kids that are still hungry can just get extra food in the cafeteria or get snacks from the snack machines. Two, if they do not enjoy the school lunch they just simply will not eat food for lunch which is unhealthy for your body!

Yes, because we need to eat healthy. It is a good difference so now we won't gain weight from eating bad school lunches. The difference it could make health wise is tremendous. I'm glad that they are serving healthy foods instead of unhealthy foods.

They mean good by the change but it's not a good thing. Kids at my school are eating less and less. The food is nasty, and it is not appetizing. Plus we never get enough to eat and we are having to go get snacks after lunch. I mean we can make our own decisions and do not need the government making them for us.

    October 1, 2012 at 9:59 am |
  306. Chad

It's worse, students don't get enough food and end up being charged for extra. The school is making money by charging us for how much food we want. Some kids need more food than others. For example, athletes need more because of how much energy they will need for practice. People should be able to choose how much food they want.

I think that it is worse. Students do not get enough food and end up being charged for extra. The school is making money by charging us for how much we want. Some kids need more food than others. For example, athletes need more because of how much energy they will need for practice. People should be able to choose mow much food they want.

I disagree with the new lunch room rules. I am an athlete, and I need as much energy as possible for practice in the afternoon. We get that energy from our lunches that we eat, and if they are limiting the lunches then I am going to have to pay to get a larger portion so that I can have the energy I will need for practice. I think that this is good in theory but in reality by just adding different portions and variety is not going to make students eat more healthy. They are going to put the food on their tray that they want to eat, and leave the food that they don't want to eat.

I Believe that we should get more food for school lunch because kids need their bellies full so if or when you have a test after lunch you won't be thinking of food instead of doing your test.

My opinion is if the government wants schools to cut back on calories, fine. But, if that means cutting back on the amount of food we get, now we have a problem. We barely get enough food as it is. I have football after school and before practice I wolf four or five sandwiches. That's probably not a good sign. ~8)

Yes, I have noticed a change in school lunches this year. Last year we actually had real burgers, but now the school changed it to tofu burgers. There has also been a decrease in other filling foods and they replaced it with salad, fruits, and vegetables. I believe that it is a bad difference. When you don't like the main course as a secondary you get some non-filling healthy food and when I get home and go to practice I'm starving.

I think the new rule is bad. Some kids need to eat a lot otherwise they will get hungry during the rest of the day. Also kids have sports after school and it is very unhealthy when you are playing hard with an empty stomach. This rule has to change.

I don't think we get enough food in our lunch, I think it would be better if we can have seconds or if got more in the first place. Giving us more food will make sure we are not hungry, and ready for the rest of the school day.

I think that we do eat enough because at school because are lunch-man and gives use a meal. If you ask me I like the salad, the fruit, and the main food they give me. I think we do get enough food in our school lunch, and our school lunch should stay the same.

I think people do not get enough food because they do not get seconds or they think they are fat and think eating to much is bad for you so they do not eat lunch or dinner or breckfest that is why I think students do not get enough food for lunch.

We don't get enough food because some kids think it is to much calories so they won't eat the food and then they don't have enough energy to stay fit. So I think our school should serve more of aveity at are school.

I think its wrong for the government to mess with school foods, I have friends that dont always get to eat when they get home and school is the only place they can eat sometimes. And limiting the food they are alowed to eat makes them starve at home. I also thought we lived in America where we can eat what we want without someone telling us we cant eat this and we cant eat that.

  328. Dylan

Hey I agree obesity is high but come on... Me and my fellow students are starving I say we should give the fit the food and they fat the diet. Because I myself have a high metabolism and I speak for many others listen guys it isn't the food it's the fact that overweight kids don't exercise and they won't get any skinnier by eating less. If anything you should be making gym requirements better and give kids an exercise sheet.

Our school janitors have said that they have never seen so much uneaten food in the trash is forever. Kids are waisting food because they have to get 2 servings of fruit or veggies or one of each.. It's not going to help anyone when we can just throw it away

    October 1, 2012 at 11:45 am |
  330. Mary

The government isn't really doing anything by changing there food, most kids go home after school and eat, because they can eat whatever they want to.

  331. Bridget

I think they should have it the way it used to be when they would have options and you didn't have to choose certain things for like my school for instance we have to have a main course, one scoop vegetable and one scoop fruit or two scoop vegetable or two scoop fruit and I honestly hate it. 🙂 🙁

Only letting us get 2 small packets of ketchup is stupid. Then having more ranch than usual. My friends and I bring ketchup bottles to school cause of it.

  333. Kashma

Just because you change what kids can eat at school, that doesn't mean people are gonna get skinnier. Most kids go home after school and eat all the foods. Its a good thing that there trying to make us eat healthy but its not doing anything, its making kids get hungry and tired during the day.

    October 1, 2012 at 11:56 am |
  334. Jasmine

I have noticed more food change this year than ever.. We can't leave our lunch line until we have 2 scoops of fruit/veggies and the main meal so many kids just throw away all their food and don't eat it also doesn't help the fact that some kids don't eat breakfast so they're starving all day

    October 1, 2012 at 11:57 am |

I think that the government shouldn't tell the kids of America how to eat and how much to eat at school the U.S.A. is a free country and we should eat what we want and the government should have no say in it. The government needs to chill with the heathy kids act and focus on the debt in the united states and how to get it lower then 16 trillion. 🙁

I think our school lunches have been getting smaller. The problem is that people don't eat what they get. I don't blame them, though. Our lunches taste horrible and they need to put good food on our trays, or else we will waste them.

I think that the school lunches are giving kids enough to eat. Kids these days think that they need a heaping plate full of food but the calories that come with that aren't healthy. America is in an obesity epidemic. If you get hungry again then buy another lunch or bring a snack.

Well to begin with i dont even eat school lunches!!!! I bring my own lucnch because the food here is grossing and sickening. First time going to school never get hot lunch\school luch!!!

I think they should change the lunches back to the way they were healthier or not because lots of kids aren't getting enough to eat or they aren't eating their food because they don't like it. And if they are hungry for the rest of the day they don't do their best in school.

I think kids should eat healthier foods but they still need protien in them or they will be starving for the rest of the day unless they bring a snack for afterwards.I think it's a good idea but i think that kids should be able to chouse what they want to eat. They shouldnt be pressured to eat something they don't want.

I am a Varsity volleyball player and during the school day my friends (who are also athletes) and I find ourselves skipping lunch, bringing our own lunch, or throwing much of what is on our tray away because of these new changes. When we do eat lunch we still find ourselfs lagging in practice because we don't get enough protien and foods that will actually fill us up and supply energy to our body. Everyone including myself are a lean, fit, healthy weight by the way. If you were wondering, Im 5'9 132lbs I'm a very lean and muscular girl and so are my friends. PLEASE change our lunchs back! Somone needs to hear us out on this, that we are not getting enough food to get us through our busey high-school lives! you were all in high-school once, dont you remember how busey and hetic things get for us high-schoolers? especially for athletes? c'mon....

I'm so tired of this new policy its a free country isn't it? why can't we eat what we like? seriously Mrs.Obama we'v had enough! Were fed up with your new policy! this is a joke! 80% of the people running our country are over weight? is this really fair if they get to sit in their office all day with no physical activity while we are learning and trying to focus on school on an emptystomach? some of us work are butts off in athletics and were physically drained because of the smaller portions. WE ARE NOT GETTING ENOUGH TO EAT! PLEASE hear us out!

Its the goverments fault. For sauces we get little packets we dont get the bottle. It is all leading up to kids not buying luch so then the school does NOT get money. Who wants to pay for a three dollar meal when you only get three things and you dont even like those things. Someone needs to step up and make a change.

chances of getting in a crash go up like crazy.
I personally have not noticed a big change in the school food at my school, however I don’t buy lunch very often and I just started at a new school (the town middle school grades 7-8) so I can’t really say much. However, I have noticed that our school lunches aren’t un- filling from what I have seen. I think that if schools want to cut back on calories, they should just say here is the food you can eat, you can pick whatever you want as long as it is all is under (a certain number) of calories.

I have noticed a change in our school lunches. Last year at the middle school, we had a lot of unhealthy choices like ice cream and cookies. The cookies were always soaked with grease~ no wonder kids are becoming more overwieght in the U.S. But the good part is, this year in High School, we have a LOT more choices; we still have the things I mentioned before, but hardly anyone gets them and the cookies actually look like real cookies. At lunch, we have a lot of choices, the food is actually real & it tastes good, and the prices are reasonable for what we get.

My family now has to spend more money to buy the necessary groceries for my family to make my lunch or (because of the lack of food) spending money on an "afternoon snack". This "simple" change is also affecting my decision on the presidential election. It's not helping the economy, nor America's hunger.

    October 1, 2012 at 5:28 pm |
  381. Michael

I don't think that the Gov. should have to tell kids and people in general what to eat. I think that everyone should be able to make their own choices. Although the guidelines that are being given to us by the Gov. for eating healthy are being disregarded by basically the whole U.S. every day. But everyone wants to blame the problem on somebody else. So I guess i partially agree with the Gov.

I have noticed a change in the school lunch menus. I'm a high school student, and while I've noticed that the cookies and other sugary things are being replaced with fruits and vegetables, most of my classmates are unhappy with the small quantity and low quality of the food. I don't eat school lunches, but most of my friends do. I think that this change to the school lunches is a good change, but not everyone would agree.

I have noticed that there has a bit of a step up. Last year I was in elementary school, and now I am in middle school. Lower School's food wasn't great and I found myself eating sandwiches everyday and anticipating for Friday to come when we got chocolate milk and ice cream. Now that I am in Middle School, I actually look forward to lunch and don't fret about what I am going to eat.

I have noticed a change in my school lunches. And its a big problem, some of my friends dont get to eat at home and school is the only place they can eat sometimes. And lowering the portions doesnt give them much to eat which makes them starve at home. I feel like the way most people are responding to this is silly. If you feel that the government shouldn't tell us what to eat, they are only telling us that because we aren't doing a good enough job taking care of ourselves. Others may say that they aren't getting enough to eat. Then bring your own lunch. It is more wholesome, and if you aren't on reduced cost lunches, then it is also a whole lot cheaper! I'm a student athlete I get that you don't have enough to get you through the day, but there are options for you, if only you have enough ingenuity to find them

I have seen a difference in our school lunches. It might not be a big change, but it is a start and I think keeping the food healthy is a good decision.

  389. Jane

My school’s lunches have changed a lot and I think that it’s causing a lot of problems. For example, the meals have not only gotten smaller, but the food is different too. Now every meal has more vegetables and whole-wheat foods. I don’t eat the school lunches myself, but a lot of my friends who get them end up not even eating the “healthy” foods. So if the lunch was chicken nuggets, tater tots, green beans, and an apple, kids usually only eat the chicken nuggets and the tater tots. This is a problem not only because they are wasting a lot of food, but they also and getting the proper nutrients they need to help them grow. Many times the portions are very small, so if you only eat part of the meal you will still be hungry later and having a bunch of snacks all day. I think that changing the school lunches might not be the best idea to help make us a healthier community.

    October 1, 2012 at 7:47 pm |
  390. Annika

I have noticed a difference in our school lunches....they have a lot healthier things to choose from and more choices too. We also have a more balanced meal. The changes are a good thing because we have a lot of athletes and they have practices after school. The healthier foods keep us fuller for a longer amount of time. It also helps others learn to make better choices in what they eat throughout the day by setting the example at school, since a lot of their time is spent at school. 🙂

I see their point of curing obesity of this plan. But, kids like me need energy to think so they wont feel sleepy and doze off in class. A plan would be to get rid of the sugary stuff, or talk to your lunch ladies to set up a healthy food line. Also you can talk to your teachers to sign a petition to get the word out.

    October 1, 2012 at 8:06 pm |
  392. Nick

It is definitely not he government's job to say what we can and cannot eat for lunch. I do think that obesity should come to an end, but it is not the government's job to change our lunches.

  393. Chaz

I think that the school lunches are really ridiculous! School lunches should be healthier, but they should at least make it high quality or good. Delicious and nutritious not just nutritious.

    October 1, 2012 at 10:31 pm |
  394. Christina

I think the schools should no cell less food. I think this because kids should have the choice of how much calories they eat. This should be decided by parents and kids, not schools. Schools are now not getting as much money as they could be. Kids aren't going to live threw the day hungry, they will just bring their own food to eat.

School Lunches haven't been fair to students this year but they have been fair to our health. The taste isn't that great but the calories are very less and that will reduce the obesity rate in America. The public thinks this is unfair especially kids because they have school lunches the most. If you want to have a snack that isn't available at school, there's always the grocery store.

I don't get hardly any food now.I think it had been change was for the larger people, but look at the smaller people. Now I have to start bring food from home to eat. Also about the salad bar, really points now people can't have what they want. they have to have certain things they may not like. I play football and im alaways feeling hungry during football. I wish that we get bigger lunches. thanks for listing to my opinon.

I think that making our meals healthier is a good idea. It has not improved that much, but it is a start.

I personally do not buy school lunch but when I look at the kids around me I do notice a few things. I think that the portions do seem a little small but not too bad. Our school does not have a big issue with kids being overweight so we probably don't pay as much attention as other schools. I prefer a packed lunch because it not only gives me the power to have as much food as I want but I can have whatever I want. This makes me satisfied with my meal so that I eat it all and am still active in the afternoon. Some people don't finish their lunches which could lead to tiredness or just being hungry afterwards. School lunches still seem to be fine at my school but I like to bring my own stuff.

I have seen a change in the food and not a good change.
Today they had chicken fajitas. All i ate was the soft
taco shell just a little bit and dipped it in my salsa.
I would've packed a lunch from home but I woke up late
and I missed the bus plus my sister was rushing me.
    I mean really I would've made myself a YUMMY
nutella and banana sandwich instead of the school's
junk. It was nasty. Oh yeah they also had refried
beans and their nasty corn. So I agree sorry my comment
    is so long. ;D

I never take school lunch because my mom used to work there, but kids have to now take a fruit or veggy, and they are wasting it and the rest of the food is very unhealthy, the juice is worse than soda!

I don't think that the government should tell you how to eat, though its good to put in healthier foods, they shouldn't tell you how and what to eat.

I think they should have made a rule for gym instead of for lunch. When the students don't get enough to eat they just go home and eat all they want – mostly junk food. They should make it so we have to have gym every trimester instead of an ENTIRE trimester! Some people probably dont do any excersising that tri! Or they could make gym every day! That is what would really help! This is just making it worse for some people!

response to Abbey "I completly agree with you completly agreeing with limiting lunch calories. I agree with you because my school has very unhealthy food choices"
kid's should be able to choose what they want to eat. I'm not saying school lunches aren't unhealthy but it's not the governments job to dictate what kids are aloud to eat
