Why do people text and drive?
In Wednesday's CNN Student News, we hear about some things that are being done in an effort to get people to stop texting while they drive. We all hear about the dangers of texting while driving; we know that it can result in accidents, even fatal ones, but we still see people doing it. So we want to know: Why do you think that people still text and drive?

I believe people still text and drive because they don't know about the consequences they could face. They just get so caught up in their texts, they forget they're in a car.

I think people text and drive because we are in such a hurry to get or give information to one another and we don't really think anything will happen to us.
I think that people should start taking more action for texting and driving. Too many people are dying from this terrible action. Someone needs to take action and try to stop it.

I think your so right!People just think Oh nothings going to happen to me i'm fine, there's like a one in 1,000,000 that's that's going to hppen to me." And then they take their eyes off the road for two seconds, and then they're in a car accident.Then they hurt themselves and other people. 🙁
they are just breaking the law for fun cause its something than they can do easily.
People Just don`t think that it will be them who will get in that car accident.Thats why i think its so important for there to be ads about texting and driving, those things do happen more often than most would think.
People text and drive because they feel like they need to give an immediate response

I think that people text and drive because they are bored during the ride. When people are bored and have nothing to do they want to communicate with someone else. That is one of the reasons people text and drive. Another reason is because people hear all these things about people who texted during driving and died, but don't think that they could get hurt during texting.
People are rsuhing to get wherever they're going and send a message because they might be late. When people get stuck in traffic they think that thay can send a messgae quickly. Little do they realize the dramamtic effect and how suddenly heir life can change with one moment of distracted attention.
texting or calling while definitely not necessary unless it is a life or death situation. If you have a way of texting or driving with both hands on the wheel, be my guest.
A big reason why people still text and drive is because they are giving excuses, like they say that i need to know who it is or they get bored and they want something to do.
It relates to the same questions like, why do people drink and drive. People think it does not apply to them or does not see it as a big enough threat to their lives or the people around them.
Along the same lines, not enough people are getting reprimanded/ticketed for doing it. How many times do people text and drive or drink and drive and not get caught. Not getting caught only reinforces negative behavior that they wont get caught. Its an odds game.
Maybe because if they don't text back then maybe they will think there not cool
Most people text and drive because they can't wait until they stop driving. Some people just don't think before they do things like breaking the law. They don't realize that by them doing that there is a accident waiting to happen. I bet when they finally get in that accident they are going to regret texting and driving. So why not stop now?
People text and drive because they don't have enough patients. Some teenagers just can't wait to hear the gossip or news of whats happening with them and their friends right now. Also as I have heard teenagers that text and drive just think that it not going to happen to me.
They may think that they have time to text but it does not work.
I think people text and drive because their impatient. It's not because they wanna hurt people, but just because their impatient and want to respond right away. Although, they need to understand the risk and they can seriously hurt and/or kill someone. I think rules on texting and driving need to be stricter because of the risk and how much their being ignored and for the driver's and other's safety.
They text and drive because sometimes they might have an impulse to do it when they see a friend or a family member doing it. Then instead of telling them to NOT do it, they want to try it out to see how it would feel even though they probably know it is wrong. Then they get so addicted to it, they won't stop and ignore what's right and what's wrong.
I think people text and drive because they are in a hurry. My mom sometimes does that on her android in my car while driving me to school. She says her text instead of typing and that is safer but still unsafe. I also think people do that because of drunk driving.
Tell your mom not to text.
People text and drive because they believe that the message they need to send is more important than their safety. I think that if they need to communicate immediatly with someone, then a phone call is best when the driver reaches their destination. Wouldn't you be uncomfortable if the driver of a car you are in was not focused on the road?
I think people text and drive because they just don't want to listen to the law and they don'"t know that they are putting there life in danger and other people driving on the road in danger and I think it should stop!!
I don't know why people text and drive, and I don't get why they would either. They are not only risking their lives, but someone elses as well. If What the person wants is an emergency, they should call. If it isn't an emergency, it should be a text, which means it can wait until the driver isn't driving.
I think people text and drive, because texts are like the sun to the world. What I mean is that their world revolves around their phones they have to be on it 24/7. Texting and driving is wrong and they could be harming theirselves, other drivers, nature, or their cars. If they just harm their cars, they are lucky that no one or nothing got hurt.
Driving should be taken seriously and texting and driving isn't taking driving seriously. Texts should be able to wait. If it is an evergency then that person should call them, not text them.
I think people still text and drive because they are ignorant. With teenagers, they hear about the warnings and such, but they just pass it off and think that nothing will happen to them if they do it "just this once". With adults, it's not really a problem, because they have more common sense, unlike the teens who text and drive.
I belive that people should not even be on the rode if the do not follow the rules of the rode because that is just taking someone's life away each day.
People die every day from it and when the lives of those peope are lost, nobody even cares, but when a celebrity dies, everyone in the USA cries about it for months.
I am not saying that texting while driving is safe or right, but I think that it is teens inability to just say" I'm driving text me later." that is why we see so many deaths today.
People text and drive because they feel like they have to answer immediately or the other person texting you will freak out . And let's be honest how many times have you felt worried because your friend didn't to respond to your text for an hour
Texting and driving is something a lot of people do even though it has caused crashes they will continue I personally would never text while driving
People are more like socializing each other while driving. But even if they want to talk about something while on the car, they didn't care about their safeway. Well, they are already safe, in their opinion. They don't really get a good pictures from these crash victims. Probably lack of focusing on the road. Having all friends on your cell phone makes you to stay in touch for every single second they waste, not everyday though. Though they (in their opinion) are on their road everyday, they know it will not going to happen on them. But sadly, they are too late to fix their mistakes.
People are thinking only about the present and not the future. The same applies when people are driving and texting. Drivers are only thinking about their friends and not thinking that they could be hurt.
Maybe the text was so IMPORTANT. You know, some thinks they can't live without texting. Or the text was about his or her EMERGENCY. If that's the fact, you can't just ignore the text, can you?
Then pull over. NOTHING is so important that you have to risk your life or others to answer.
I think people text while driving because they think it's harmless. 'It don't even take a minute, and its urgent'. If it's really urgent, than I think they should stop the car, get the thing done, and than get back on the pedal. The 'only a minute' can leave dire consequences...
People still text and drive although they know that it can result in accidents for some reasons. First, Some of them need to communicate with their friends on-fly, and chatting anytime ; another need to check their message from business and they have to reply messages immediately. Some people text messages as their habit because of boring when driving in along time...
People still text and drive because they they want to still be in touch with people while going places. Some people forget how dangerous it is for them to be doing that and sometimes the worst happens. This is just like smoking, they how bad it is for them, but yet they keep doing it.
I think that people text and drive because they feel like it is a OK time to text. So I think if all states do the same thing NC is doing by punishing people for texting and driving it would certainly decrease it and possibly demolish it.
I don't actually have a very accurate answer for this question because I've never driven, but, I think that people just don't realize that they are doing something fatal that not just them, but others could get hurt! And I think that the people who text things are lazy by not stopping the car, and then doing something else.
It's a chance that people are willing to take. Its the question of which asks, "in what chances would it kill me?" People don't seem to realize that it could always be them, and why not them but always others. They have only seem to see these occur on the news or to people which don't necessarily affect them. It's only until that state, where they are greatly hurt or even dead, when they realize the awful circumstances faced. In which the case goes the same for me and everyone.
Refusing your friend's text message can be hard.Especially if they are a teen.
Maybe, people that text while driving think that they are too good as drivers to get hurt.
I think people text and drive because, they have so many other things going on and they don't realize there own saftey is at risk.
I think its kind of wierd that people text and drive and they KNOW its dangerous, its just tht they do it because they can.
People just have a natural instinct to "reply" to whatever they get, or the thought that "It will never happen to me". Thus they continue doing it.

I believe texting while driving is an addiction. When you are addicted to something you can't stop it even knowing the consequences of your actions. It's just like drinking and driving. You don't think you are going to get in an accident until it happens, and then it may be fatal.
I think that texting and driving is, or should be, illegal in all states because it is killing our friends and family. I think people text and drive because they think it is better than drinking and driving or that they think that they are capable of doing so without getting hurt.

People text and drive because they're busy. I think that only a fraction of America's text-drivers face any consequences. Also texting isn't the problem. The problem is being a bad driver. I think that only good drivers should be allowed to text. I've been in a car with a text-driver many times before but have not crashed. Otherwise I wouldn't be sending this comment...
This is a ridiculous response. Nobody can safely text and drive. It takes only a second of distraction to end a life.
I think that people shouldn't text and drive because it just seems dumb. I mean you know you can just wait. It's not that big of a deal. Its just a text your whole life doesnt depend on the text. So don't text and drive... your does depend on this.

I think that texting and driving is one of the main reasons for mobile accidents.

Even if you take your eyes off the rode for one second you could get into a accident. If the text is important, pull over and answer it. If a friend texted you, you can wait to talk to them.

The ads on television don't affect people because that is not a personal example. People only understand how serious something is when it happens to them or to someone they love.
In my opinion, if I ever text and drive or have a friend text and drive it is because of our parents. Since I first started driving, my parents have always wanted me to keep them informed on every little detail possible. For example, if I were to meet my friends in Jackson one day to go eat dinner with them, my parents would want me to text them as soon as I got there and left. Sometimes I forget to text on the way back home because I get caught up in hanging out with my friends. That being said, I have to text them while I'm driving back home, otherwise I'll get in trouble.

Well i think texting and driving is something that people should abide by because you should be watching the road not looking at your a message that could be read once you have stopped the car so some people have to take consideration that when you are texting that not only your life is in danger but also the people around you.

People dont know how dangerous it is to be txting and driving untill something bad happens to them or to one of their loved ones... They should take more percautions about what their doing when their driving... people just care about themselves and not others!! Cops should also put the example and not use their phones!! A person using a phone should get a good punishment!!
Many or one the reasons i think people text and drive is because, they just can't wait to get home or to stop somewhere and read there messages and or ansewer there calls. At times you never know a message can be really important but i don't think that message is worth you'r life!
I don't believe many people really think about what they're doing, and I'm a bit shocked at the very thought of that. Since people are on their phones 24/7, they don't really know how to put their phones down for few moments while they drive. Also, I don't think many parents inforce the no texting and driving rule on their kids, and teenagers will go just as far as the rules will allow them.
They don't care about people or themselves.
Some people are believe that the rule doesn't apply to them because they think they're such skilled drivers. My older brother tests while driving sometimes, but usually at stop signs and lights, where he thinks he's safe, but isn't really.
People, especially teenagers, often think that the negative consequences won't happen to them.
I think people who text and drive are in less populated areas so they think it is less dangerous. But, texting and driving is still dangerous.
I think people who text and drive believe that nothing will happen to them. They probably have done it before without anything happening to them. So, they think they are safe.

I believe that people still text and drive because they don't see it as a potential harm to other people, and they don't understand that they could kill people if they do not pay attention to the road. There are just so many obstacles that could cause a person to get into an accident, and not a lot of teenagers realize that. if they don't want to suffer from severe head trauma or brain injuries, then they need to leave their phone off or just wait until they have reached their destination to respond to the text.
We are still texting while driving because every person who does this thinks that they are different. They all believe that they are either good at it and its okay for them or that nothing will happen to them so they don't need to worry about it.

Teens simply don't care what adults are telling them. I my self do not listen because i text when i want. If you don't like my driving get off of the sidewalk!
People are texting and driving because people are impatient and don't know how to wait. It is sad because they all know it could harm someone. I think that now in society people need to be taught what patients are because nobody has any, sad very sad.

Some habits are hard to break. When it comes to driving and texting simultaneously, people should lay off their phones and pay attention to the road. Sometimes people forget that it isn't safe and probably just live in the moment.

In my opinion people are just incompetent of other people on the road. They think its a simple text that won't effect there driving. Well let me tell you, one second on a text is one second that a pedestrian could walk in front of the car.

people text while driving because they have stuff to talk abot that can't wait. if you value your life and your friends life, don't text while driving. even if your state doesn't have a Texting While Driving ban in your state, you should still keep both hands on the wheel no matter your experience level. driving requires your full on attention. every second counts in the game of life.
Well I think its a good idea to ilegalise textin wile driving because its closely the same as drinking and driving it causes likely the same of accidents.

Not everyone is fully aware of just how dangerous texting and driving can be. People tend to have the mind set of, "Oh no that wouldn't happen to. I can multitask." People are just in-denial of the true possibility and consequences. People shouldn't text or do anything with the phone before or after you get in the car. Many driver's will admit they know, or they have done done it before, and nothing happens. But are they going to do or say when something does happen?
first of all i could roll a blunt, hotbox my car completely full of smoke and still drive perfect cuz i do that everyday LIKE A BOSS MOB1
People that need to text and if its important they should pull over and text instead of taking the chance of getting into an accident. People should be more cautious and pay more attention the the road instead of their phones!

They also feel like they are good enough drivers that they can text and drive at the same time. They don't feel like they would ever get in a wreck, until the last thing they see is their finger pushing a useless button...

I think texting and driving is a really big distraction. If you cant even pay attion in school and talk about something else. What makes you think you can have control of a 2,000 lb vehicle and text at the same time and not be distracted.

This is something I have noticed too. Could it be people believe "no it's not gonna happen to me." or is it that they know the what, but not the the why. As toddlers we might have been interested in that red glowing thing on the stove and we understand that that mom and dad have told us not to touch it. Texting while driving is a huge danger in our modern society. You may take your eyes off the road approximatly 10 seconds and may end up dead or worse killing another innocent driver. In my opinion they should make it illegal in every state. Even having the possibility and leaverage of having your cell phone in the car may inforce your habbit to text back as soon as you get a text message. Many of th people in my school and around our town, when the parents are driving they hand the phone to their children to read the text to them, then reply so they never have to take their eyes off the road.

Texting and driving is stupid and dangerous! I feel strongly that it should stop but i dont think a piece of paper will fix the problem. I have a 19 year old brother and i know he texts and drives. Its just more important to talk to your friends i guess. The signature is along the right track but it wont stop it.
