Does Making Cents Make Sense?

Your two cents:

Canada's government has decided to stop making pennies. People can still use them, but the country won't be minting any new ones. Part of the reason: They cost more to make than they're actually worth.

Could this make life easier for many Canadians?  Yes.  Could this lead to rounding up and possibly higher prices?  Yes.

But it got us all wondering whether you think the penny should stick around where you live.  Penny for your thoughts?

It would make sense to ditch the penny. This cut could save the Canadians money and put that extra money to other important costs.

I think Canada should ditch the penny because with a penny you can't buy anything with just a penny.

But it would cost more money for the citizens of Canada because if you take away the penny the government wont round down they will round up.

It has been proven that, on average, rounding (due to eliminating pennies) does not raise prices. Pennies are also a hassle for cashiers and customers, and do not adequately facilitate the exchange of goods and services. In addition, inflation has made a penny close to worthless in comparison to other coins.

I think they should get rid of the penny, it's just one cent.

but think about it its a yes no situation bcuase what about taxes because things that are 4.99 then it would be plus tax witch means it would 5.00 but then what about then what would it be

I think the penny should stay, because many people collect pennies and it adds a lower element to the economy, so there is not only dollars, but also individual pieces.

I think that they should keep the penny going, but stop making new ones because it is only costing them money and they shouldn't spend that kind of money on a coin that barely has value.

I think that it is dumb that it costs more to make the penny than what it is actually worth so I say ditch the penny because then prices may go up but taxes on food and stuff might go down

Canada has a good idea for stopping pennies. Stopping production will help Canada focus more on other problems like pollution or education. Even though prices may be a bit higher, Canadians have a good idea of the big picture.

I think that we should keep the penny where we live. If not, generally the highest 5 cent mark would be the new price. You would actually pay more than you would normally.

I think they should keep it but if they don’t there are plenty of pennies that we already have that will circle around... It’s not like we have a shortage of pennies and it’s not like pennies will break us. We have other change that we can still use. I just don’t see any big concern from this. Penny or no Penny we will still have money just not all of the same amounts.

I think making cents doesn't make any sense because Canadian government tried to solve economic and financial problems. Although people can use it, it will take a long time for people to realize why they are still facing economy crisis just like us in the US.

    April 2, 2012 at 12:04 am |
  11. Tri-Minh

I may not be a good mathematician on money, but I think the Canadian government is trying to tell us something. I think they are trying to help us to reach out of this crisis. It makes more sense if the government can stop making pennies so that Canadian citizens don't have to worry about their money. Even though making pennies could make life easier for many Canadians, people still concern about their future that includes their children's future.

I think it won't make such a big difference if the goverment stops making pennies. Korea stopped making one won, but there is no problem to anyone.

Getting rid of the penny may increase prices by four cents, as the nickel is not eliminated, but saving over a million dollars a year would most likely be the better option.

Coins rock! They are an easy way to save money because if you have spare change every day after shopping or somthing, you could through them into a jar and befor you know it you could have $100 saved up because you had some spare pennies laying around and put them in a jar.

I think the penny should not be used anymore if the goverment announce their speech. Because this phenomenon only cause the non-unity of money, which lost the meaning of using money as a tool to exchange things.

If costs more to make than what it is really worth when spent then there is no reason to continue to make it even though it may have a not so good effect on a lot of businesses but a lot of is going to be saved from doing this and that money can go to a source that needs it

in my opinoion i think that it does make sense only because if they can save billions of dollars each year and make everything better than maybe eventually they will start making pennies again.

    April 2, 2012 at 10:05 am |

yes they should keep making Canadian pennies, because people would start losing pennies and they would eventually run out of pennies, so yes keep making it

making cents doesnt really matter because most people dont use it and dont like to carry aruond change all the time it would be better to stop making change and just round up the change

I think that we should get rid of the penny. It takes more than a cent to make a penny,so why should we make more?We would just lose more money making pennies.

  40. Kyah

It is good that the Canadian penny will stop being minted because the estimated 11 million dollars that could be saved could go towards more serious issues in the country.

    April 2, 2012 at 10:11 am |
  41. Danielle

If it costs Canada more to make them then what they are worth then is there really a point? Save some money and get rid of it. It doesn't really make a difference if the price is $7.99 or $8.00. It's pretty much the same thing.

    April 2, 2012 at 10:12 am |
  42. Ali

If the penny costs more than its worth, they should just ditch it. Yes, it will raise the price of items not drastically, but keeping them doesn't make sense. Ditch the penny. Carl I love you your sooo cool 😉

    April 2, 2012 at 10:12 am |
  43. Killian

I see where their going with this, if it costs more to make a penny than to spend a penny you probably should ditch it. But it could cause higher prices which isn't very good. I say ditch the penny.

    April 2, 2012 at 10:12 am |
  44. CJ

Why does it not seem necessary to use a penny? It is actually useful for lower price items. If they ditch the penny, they might as well ditch the nickel, and the dime, and so forth.

    April 2, 2012 at 10:12 am |
  45. Alexis

Off with the penny! If it worth that much more, there no need for it. I think they use that saved money, for something more eco- friendly!

I think that they should get rid of pennies. It will cost more and they make no profit. They lose .6 cents and they are wasting money.

    April 2, 2012 at 10:13 am |

well, I think it is a good choice but it will bring up problems like the prices. They should round of each price to a doller with tax..... XD

i think you should keep the pennies because the government will not have money and need to make more money and will cost money to make cents so dont get rid of and pennies

    A penny for your thoughts?
Think about it, a penny saved is a penny earned.
How do you earn pennies without pennies?

    April 2, 2012 at 10:19 am |
  51. Nina

First off, the economy in the USA isn't very strong right now, so making pennies is able to weaken it a considerable amount. I would have never thought of what Canada is doing right now, but they have a good idea. If we can stop making pennies, or make something else instead, our economy can save money.

    April 2, 2012 at 10:24 am |
  52. Jamison

I think that Canadians should be able to still use pennies, just not use new ones. Because pennies cost more to make than they are worth, they should not waste money on making more. Pennies will still be in use!

I think the United States should keep the penny because not only is it currency but, at least to me it has a lot of meaning.

  54. Gabe

I have change, especially pennies lying all around from my car to my house. I use them when I am buying something at the convenience store that doesn’t cost that much or if I don’t want to break a certain bill. Everything these days is going to electronics, such as debit and credit cards so there really isn’t any use of a penny. If the people can still use them, but they are just not making any more than I think that should be fine. I would still use them. If it costs more to make them then they are worth then we should get rid of them.

    April 2, 2012 at 10:44 am |
  55. Mikey

I hate to say it, but keep the penny. We need it to make change, since tax makes prices uneven, you might need it to give change. Nickels are the next shortest coin, but, for example, $8.73 would need pennies to pay for it/give change.

    April 2, 2012 at 10:49 am |

I think that the Canadian government should ditch the penny; it only makes sense to stop minting them if it costs to make a penny is more than the value of the coin

    April 2, 2012 at 10:59 am |
  57. Luzelena,Vonte,Fidencio

I think we should keep it because they mostly make prices with change.

I think that we should keep on making pennies because they're still useful for savings and they help a lot even though they're only worth one cent.THEY MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We should keep the pennies because people are used to them.It helps to buy things.

    April 2, 2012 at 11:04 am |
  64. Michael

The theory is right: if the cost is greater than the benefit, get rid of it. However, I think that they may regret ditching the penny, as it has been show that people are more likely to purchase an item that is 99 cents than they are to purchase an item that costs a dollar. The penny makes a difference. Keep it.

If Canada was to take away their penny, it would greatly affect marking, and the economy, because buying something for one penny cheaper, seems alot more than it really is.

I think that they should stop producing the pennies. It is costing them more money than it's worth. With producing the pennies they are losing money.

    April 2, 2012 at 11:09 am |

I think pennies should not be eliminated. A good solution would be to make pennies out of a cheaper metal. That way, businesses would not round up prices to the nearest nickel.

I think they should stop making pennies because they over-dueced the price on them! And also they should just use nickels, dimes, dollars and etc. Thats all Canada needs for money

I say ditch the penny because they could save 11 million dollars. its only worth 1 cent so just get rid of it. pennys are also made of copper so they just look kinda weird to.

    April 2, 2012 at 11:10 am |
  73. zack

i think they should ditch the pennie because they are losing 11 million each year and a pennie is only 1 cent so its not going to be a big deal. they dont need pennies. 🙂

  74. KC

Canada should stop making pennies because eventually they will go into debt. It will not affect store owners income because everyone knows that they make something $.99 instead of $1.00.

    April 2, 2012 at 11:10 am |
  75. Kristyn

I believe we should keep the penny because, even though it may cost more, it surely improves the economy. And if it keeps jobs rolling and stores open, isnt it worth it? thank you for your consideration and have a great day. 🙂

In my opinion, I think they should stop making pennies meaning that it would save more money for the country to have. To me it doesn't seem right that it cost more to make a penny that what it's actual value is.

    April 2, 2012 at 11:11 am |
  77. cristina

I think that Canada should keep pennies because if they don't it will ruin the economy. People tend to buy things that have cents added to them. Such as, people would buy someting that is $7.99 instead of $8.00 even though it is only a penny difference. They tend to do this because they see the seven in the front not the eight. Canada should keep the penny even if it costs more to make than what it is worth because it will keep the economy running. If not, the economy will get worse, even if it is just a penny different.

    April 2, 2012 at 11:12 am |

    April 2, 2012 at 11:12 am |

Making pennies no longer makes sense. Canada has other coins that are much more important than the penny. The government would save about $11,000,000 if pennies are "discontinued". This would be a great choice for Canada to make for their people!

    April 2, 2012 at 11:12 am |
  80. Danielle

I believe that if the pennies cost more to create than they are worth, they should stop meing made. I don't see how there would be a point to continue making them.

    April 2, 2012 at 11:12 am |
  81. Emily

I think that the penny should be continued to be made. But in Canda, if its such a big deal that the pennies cost 1.6 cents instead of one penny per penny, then Canda should not continue making these pennies. But in my personal opinion, the penny should continue being made. The cost is only .6 cents more. What is such the big deal about .6 cents? In the U.S.A. I have the same opinion about pennies.

    April 2, 2012 at 11:12 am |
  82. Adrian

I think Canada should stop making pennies because even though something that is $4.99 looks cheaper than something that is $5.00, most people round up anyway. You could also make it $4.95n if you had to. It doesn't make sense to make something that is worth less than it cost.

    April 2, 2012 at 11:12 am |
  83. Maria

I think we should ditch the pennys. If it takes more to make them then what is the whole point? This could save Canada a lot of money that they could use for different things that are more inportant.

  87. Ang

Pennies cost more to make then they are worth so I don't see why we should keep making them. We should still use them but we should not make more since they aren't cheap to make.

    April 2, 2012 at 11:30 am |
  88. AJ

I think that we should keep making pennies because if you have something that's .99 cents than its easier to pay exact change than more then the item is worth.

    April 2, 2012 at 11:32 am |
  89. Terrance

Yes because then we wouldn't be so far in debt

    April 2, 2012 at 11:33 am |

Making the penny could actually make more money! The penny helps stores with sales, so the penny still helps earn the country more than it's extra cost.

    April 2, 2012 at 11:33 am |
  91. Ang

Since pennies cost so much to make we should not make anymore but we should be able to make them.

    April 2, 2012 at 11:37 am |

Just leave away penny. It is really heavy for wallet, and I have a lot of penny in my drawer without using it.
So keeping it in history or drawer is better choice.

What is the point of making a coin that costs more then itself?

    April 2, 2012 at 12:50 pm |
  94. Mike

I think that even though it will lose the government 1.6 cents for penny, the government still makes money by collecting taxes anyways. Keep the cents, because it makes sense.

    April 2, 2012 at 12:50 pm |

I think we should keep the penny because had the penny for a long time.

    April 2, 2012 at 12:52 pm |

I think Canada should ditch the penny if it is costing them money they should ditch it. (Carl Azus rocks!!!).

    April 2, 2012 at 12:53 pm |
  97. Autumn

I think that we should ditch the penny because you have to pay more than what a penny is worth to produce more penny's so we should ditch the penny.

    April 2, 2012 at 12:53 pm |
  98. SCOTT

If you ditch the penny, it will be worth more and more every year. DITCH THE PENNY! It makes the people of Canada and soon America lose money.

  99. Kelli

I think the penny should go. It cost more just to make one cent, and its going to save canada more money in which they can buy things more improtant than a penny.

    April 2, 2012 at 12:54 pm |
  100. Andrew

I think they should keep the penny, but use cheaper materials and therefore prices won't rise.

    April 2, 2012 at 12:54 pm |
  101. Lauren

I don't thinkk they should get rid of the penny, it will make prices raise. There are enough money problems already, and we definately don't need more. Sooner or later more and more buissnesses will go out of buissness.

    April 2, 2012 at 12:55 pm |
  102. Kaine

They shouold ditch the penny, because a penny cost more making them it is worth. Why would we continue making penny's if it cost more to make one then what it is worth?

    April 2, 2012 at 12:55 pm |
  103. katie

I think they should keep the money in process because even though if they stop production they could save 11 million dollars and it is 1.6 cents they use to make them they are collecting a lot of money from taxes just use some of the tax money to keep the production going.

    April 2, 2012 at 12:56 pm |
  104. alyssa

I think it is resonable to do this because the government is losing money, but do you think it is reasonable for them to do this

I think it would be a good idea to remove the penny. If it costs more to distribute it than the actual value, there is no point. I understand if something is $4.99 not $5.00 there is a penny difference, but we still have other coins.

    April 2, 2012 at 12:56 pm |
  106. Ty

I think you should keep the penny. It may cost 1.6 cents to make a penny but the government gets more money by advertisement. If something cost $5.99 it will have more of a chance of being bought by something that cost $6.00!

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU ALL ITS JUST A PENNY.

  108. Beronica,Joana,Kierah

i think that we should keep the pennies because you need it for change and no because people sometimes don't even use them that much 🙂 ;D

    April 2, 2012 at 12:57 pm |
  109. FELICIANO,EMELY,AND RAFAEL

No I don't think that they should get rid of the pennies because it would be hard to work with change like if you have to pay $1.01 and you use a nickel for the pennie how would they get change.

    April 2, 2012 at 12:59 pm |
  110. austin

we should keep the U.S penny because it is worth more than a one cent.

    April 2, 2012 at 12:59 pm |
  111. Allie

I say keep the penny, because if you don't have the exact change, then the cashier won't either, because there are no pennies. Then you will have to let them keep the change, and you will lose money! Also, every penny counts, especially when trying to help those less fortunate. KEEP THE PENNY!

we should keep the penny because the penny is worth more than your life!!!!

    April 2, 2012 at 1:01 pm |

Yes,because so we can pay taxes and if we keep the ones we have we can lose them and we wont have any so will never run out.

    April 2, 2012 at 1:03 pm |
  115. joe

we should keep the penny because it will be worth something one day

    April 2, 2012 at 1:03 pm |
  116. Raul and Jamall

Yes we think they should keep making pennies because we could run out of pennies then every thing is mess up and it is l money that we could use.

    April 2, 2012 at 1:03 pm |

I think the cents should be made of something else.

i think that most people would not miss the penny because so many people use their debit cards for most transactions

    April 2, 2012 at 1:04 pm |

They should keep making pennies because what if we ran out of pennies and what about we have to pay taxes.

    April 2, 2012 at 1:04 pm |
  120. Maritza,Juan, & Ernesto

I Think we should keep the pennies because we could run out of them and when you are at the store you cant give a person 2cents because we ran out of the pennies.

    April 2, 2012 at 1:05 pm |
  121. jess

i think we should keep the pennies because it it worth then a cent because of the medal and stuff like that and if you turn it in u would get alot of money

    April 2, 2012 at 1:06 pm |
  122. Anna

I think the penny is a good thing, with out it every thing would have to be rounded up to 0.05 which would make things more expencive because companies selling supplys are not going to take a loss on materials by lowering costs, even if it is only a couple cents. Also what would become of the statement "A penny saved is a penny earned" if there were no more pennies?

    April 2, 2012 at 1:16 pm |
  123. Sarah

I believe that the penny is no longer important in our growing economy. I can see the use of the penny plumitting and becoming more of a problem for our daily life. While prices will either be rounded up or down, meaning that someone, somewhere is losing money, the government is losing money by spending more to make the penny than it is even worth. I think that a good sollution to this, if we MUST keep the penny is to find a cheaper material to make it from.

    April 2, 2012 at 1:24 pm |
  124. Valerie

I think it is a good decision to get rid of the pennies because it won't cost money and you can put that money saved into good use for Canada.

    April 2, 2012 at 1:27 pm |
  125. Juliann

I think we should keep the penny becuse if we have something like $9.99 what change will we get back?

    April 2, 2012 at 1:29 pm |
  126. Jamoll

If the government is losing money making the coin, then removing the penny will save money and contribute to the society and that money could be used to help people

    April 2, 2012 at 2:17 pm |
  127. Jeremy

I honestly believe that the penny is a great thing, but if it costs too much to make pennies, then they should cease production. Even without pennies, the people of Canada have nickles as well, and there will be a ton of leftover pennies.

    April 2, 2012 at 2:18 pm |
  128. Deandre

They should ditch the penny because it cost more to make it than it actually costs

    April 2, 2012 at 2:18 pm |
  129. Gergen

I think that they should still make them but not as many that way the government saves money and stores can still charge $4.99 or $9.99 instead of $5 or $10

    April 2, 2012 at 2:18 pm |
  130. J.P.

I don't think they should get rid of the penny because it is a part of history. It will also raise prices of things that would normally be cheaper.

    April 2, 2012 at 2:19 pm |
  131. Christian

I think they should get rid of the penny because if they are going to make money they should be paying an equil amount to currency in use.

    April 2, 2012 at 2:19 pm |
  132. Alfanzo

I beleive that the importance of pennies has declined. In many cases, people think of coins as a hassle to cary around, and don't see the value in them. The penny has become too expensive to produce, and is costing countries more to make. These soins should stop their production in manufacturing mints.

    April 2, 2012 at 2:20 pm |
  133. seth

I dont think they should make anymore because its a waste of money. It just does not make any "CENTS".

    April 2, 2012 at 2:20 pm |
  134. ramses

i believe that we should keep pennies because it keeps stores opened and if someone buys something for $4.09 and that person gives him or her $4.10 what will we get back and it helps the economy.

    April 2, 2012 at 2:20 pm |
  135. Jessica

The Government should get rid of the penny if there is no reason to have it because you are spending more money to make these pennies.

    April 2, 2012 at 2:21 pm |
  136. Krysie .

If its wasting money, i think they should get rid of pennies.

    April 2, 2012 at 2:21 pm |
  137. De'Anthony

The government should stop making penny's. so instead the government can save more money than where selling making.

    April 2, 2012 at 2:21 pm |
  138. Bailey

I think we should ditch the pennies because either way your going to pay tax so it would just be raised up to say instead of 4.99 five dollars. Also, it would be easier to add in your head

    April 2, 2012 at 2:21 pm |
  139. Mark

I think pennies should not be completely done away with, but rather pennies should be made out of different materials. It is ridiculous to continue making pennies for more money than each one is worth, so the government should use cheaper materials for cheaper production.

    April 2, 2012 at 2:24 pm |
  140. Reed

I think there shouldn't be pennies. To me, it's useless piece of money because it's easy to lose and we barely use it.

    April 2, 2012 at 2:25 pm |
  141. Baker

The penny is dumb, they should get rid of it

    April 2, 2012 at 2:31 pm |
  142. Anthony

I think that they should just get rid of the penny it makes no sense to keep making it if you only have to make more to produce it

    April 2, 2012 at 2:31 pm |
  143. APL

If any item sells for less then how much it cost to make it, I don't think anyone would continue to produce that product. If a company makes a product that costs $5 to make, that company would go into major dept selling that product for $3, same goes to the government and making pennies.

    April 2, 2012 at 2:34 pm |
  144. McKenzie

I think that they should stop making pennies not a lot of people use them and they always get lost in my pockets anyways. It would also save a lot of money that they could use somewhere else!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    April 2, 2012 at 2:51 pm |
  145. Amanda

I agree with it because we would have more money it's not worth making them if they cost more to make then they are worth

    April 2, 2012 at 2:54 pm |
  146. AJ

They should get rid of the penny because it is making the country lose money.

    April 2, 2012 at 3:05 pm |
  147. Brian

Even though the price is expensive you dont have to make new pennies every year. Keep the pennies that are already used and after a low amout of pennies make new ones!!!

    April 2, 2012 at 3:07 pm |
  148. Kennen

i think they should ditch the penny beacuse it will save us money and then they could use for marketing instead of $4.99 they could use the price of $4.95 because then the marketing still ooks farely cheaper even though it is only a 5 cent difference so you still get your marketing and dont need the penny.

    April 2, 2012 at 3:07 pm |
  149. Collin

I think that people should keep the penny in production, because it is useful to have them when you want exact change.

    April 2, 2012 at 3:07 pm |
  150. josh

Although you wont have pennys anymore what they could do is just sell items one ninety five instead of one ninety nine. Also what canada could do is find a different type of medal or even make the penny smaller so they are not losing money.

    April 2, 2012 at 3:07 pm |
  151. tyler

i think that they should get rid of the penny because they cost more to make them.

    April 2, 2012 at 3:08 pm |
  152. Megan

I think you should ditch the penny, because if it costs more money to make the penny, than what it's worth; then why would you keep making it?

    April 2, 2012 at 3:08 pm |
  153. Danielle

I think you you should ditch the pennies. If they cost more to make then why make them? Like seriously, what is the point. Hehe Lol

    April 2, 2012 at 3:09 pm |
  154. Ali

I say forget the pennies! If they cost more to make them than what they are worth, they are not worth it!!! I think that people could get over the fact that something is priced at $5.00 instead of $4.99. I know i could... 🙂

    April 2, 2012 at 3:09 pm |
  155. Payton

No it doesn't make sense because they would have to change is whole coin system. People would have to pay a lot more money on items. People would care. The government has a lot of money waste and just making money gets the government a lot more money. So it makes no sense

    April 2, 2012 at 3:10 pm |
  156. Lyndsey

I think you should ditch the pennies. Look at it this way, if it costs more money to make a penny then it is actually worth, there is no point!!!!!!!!!!! There is already enough pennies in the world!!! It would even save money not to make money. There is enough to go around.

    April 2, 2012 at 3:11 pm |
  157. Ciarra

why do the candians stop making pennies, how do they make them, whos picture is on the pennies and who makes pennies.Carl azuz do you have pennies and stop them befoore.

    April 2, 2012 at 3:12 pm |
  158. Danielle

I think getting rid of the penny is a good idea. I don't know about you but I think saving over 11 million dollars is a good idea. Sure pennies are used quite often, but it's not like they aren't worth anything after the Government stops making them. You can still use them they will just be a lower population of them. Next time you see a penny on the ground, be sure to pick it up cause there's not going to be a lot of them after they stop being made!

    April 2, 2012 at 3:12 pm |
  159. Jennifer

I think you should ditch the penny, because more and more penny's add up and the more penny's that add up the more we spend 1.6 cents to make 1 penny, that's more than what a penny's worth !

    April 2, 2012 at 3:13 pm |
  160. Courtney

I think that canada should keep the penny because if they do have sales tax there it would make the sales tax go up. another reason i think they should keep the penny the prices on things that are for example $4.99 it would make things look so much more expensive!

    April 2, 2012 at 3:13 pm |
  161. Ciarra

    pennies are great

    April 2, 2012 at 3:13 pm |
  162. Ashlyn

I think getting rid of the penny is a smarter choice finacially. It will help the government save lot of money, and it is more beneficilal to change the currency a little bit to save some money, than to waste money that could be used for better, more purposful and helpful causes. I say ditch the penny!

    April 2, 2012 at 3:13 pm |
  163. Nicolee

For them to stop minting pennies is a smart idea. If they stop making pennies, then people that have them will be able to hold something rare and special from their time. Not to mention the money they would save to not make new "shinier" pennies.

    April 2, 2012 at 3:14 pm |
  164. Stefan

I think that the government of Canada should find a way to make the pennies with less money like other countries

    April 2, 2012 at 3:14 pm |
  165. Frances

Canada's government should stop making pennys because they cost more than the're actually worth. And it can make life easier for many Canadians.

    April 2, 2012 at 3:18 pm |
  166. Kaille

I think it could save money but when people pay 8 dollars for something that is 7.99, then sooner or later people wont have a penny back so then prices are going to go up a penny and people will think that it is more expensive.

    April 2, 2012 at 3:26 pm |
  167. Rachel

I think every cent counts and they should keep them for jobs and just for people. Maybe they collect them. My opinion is KEEP PENNIES!

    April 2, 2012 at 3:27 pm |
  168. Ja-kyung

If I had one I will just keep it for myself untill the penny gets rare

    April 2, 2012 at 3:36 pm |
  169. Stevie

I think we should keep the penny because if we ditch it, every thing will be more expensive, and people will be cheated out of their money. We should also keep the penny because people like me who can count change back will be confused, make mistakes, and if not careful, they could give people too much or too little change back. These things would not be good at all.

    April 2, 2012 at 3:46 pm |
  170. sebastian

I dont think making the penny is smart. Nothing that you will buy in stores is worth one cent. The penny also cost more to make than the penny is worth. Canada should leave the penny

    April 2, 2012 at 4:00 pm |
  171. Conway

To me, Canada should keep the penny, because what if you need to give, lets say, $1.03 in change. Unless they have a 3 cent peice, thoses people need to make sense.

    April 2, 2012 at 4:01 pm |
  172. Kayleigh

I think we should not "ditch" the penny. If you think about it, it will cause havoc with prices being changed and prices being rounded to the nearest nickle. Maybe the government can come up with a solution to produce pennies, but a lesser amount of them. It can save the US money without completely discarding our penny.

    April 2, 2012 at 4:03 pm |
  173. Heather

I do not think it makes sense for Canada to get rid of the penny. It may decrease the money spent for printing currency, but it can potentially hurt the economy and Canada's businesses incomes.

    April 2, 2012 at 4:03 pm |
  174. Brittany

I believe that we should be able to keep the penny. Think about all the issues it will cause stores; well known prices will have to be changed. It's not worth the trouble. Ditching the penny just doesn't make 'cents.'

    April 2, 2012 at 4:03 pm |
  175. sebastian

I dont think making the penny is smart. Nothing that you will buy in stores is worth one cent. The penny also costs more to make than the penny is worth. Canada should leave the penny

    April 2, 2012 at 4:04 pm |
  176. Leon

I think you should keep the penny even though its more than what its worth. The reason why you should keep it is because businesses could run out of pennies and then if someone needs 7 cents you can give them pennies if they run out, so i think you should still keep the penny.
    ok bye ,

    April 2, 2012 at 4:04 pm |
  177. Jordon

I think Canada should ditch the penny. If they ditch the penny the will save a lot. The only problem with ditching the penny is that prices like, $4.99, would have to be changed. Unless, Canada finds a new type of metal for the penny.

    April 2, 2012 at 4:04 pm |
  178. Alex

I think they should not keep the pennies because it costs more to make it than it is worth and they would save 11 million dollars in one year.

    April 2, 2012 at 4:05 pm |
  179. Mackenzie

Ditching the penny would be beneficial. When I look at a probuct that has a 99 at the end I naturally round it up. If something cost more to make then it is worth then there is no room for profit. There is no need to continue to roduce the penny.

    April 2, 2012 at 4:05 pm |
  180. Zach

It does not make any sense to spend more than a penny for a penny. It's bad for the economy because the goverment is losing money that could be used for other important purposes.

    April 2, 2012 at 4:05 pm |
  181. Amber

I believe they should get rid of the penny because it doesn't make any sense to keep something that costs more to make then it's worth. Even if the prices are raised they should still get rid of the penny also because they would save as much as 11 million dollars a year.

    April 2, 2012 at 4:05 pm |
  182. Graham

I think they should ditch the penny cause its costing them 1 million dollers every year and people never use them. They either put them in their pockets or just do nothing with them cause you can't buy anything with them (carl rocks)

    April 2, 2012 at 4:06 pm |
  183. Shae

Keep the penny ! Whatwould you do if a price $1.76 ? If its a problem with money then you could make it out of something else.

    April 2, 2012 at 4:06 pm |
  184. Isaac

I think they should ditch the penny. It is basically worthless because nothing is worth exactly a penny. It even cost more to make a penny than it does to spend one.

    April 2, 2012 at 4:06 pm |
  185. Jeremy

I am with the idea of getting rid of the penny one hundred percent. I think that if the penny cost more to make it then it isn't worth it. The government would lose a lot of money...so the idea of getting rid of the penny is a good idea.

    April 2, 2012 at 4:06 pm |
  186. Austin

Taking away the one cent penny of Canada will dramasticly increase the amount of money Canada has. The government of Canada could then use the money against making there military stronger, building homes and help fight poverty.

    April 2, 2012 at 4:07 pm |
  187. Zoe

I believe the government should keep the pennies and just make them worth two cents instead of being less than what it actually is worth and loosing money. If the world didnt have pennies then they have the change tax's too. Take the price of $1.07, you have to use two nickels instead of just using two pennies and a nickel. So keep the penny but make it worth 2 cents instead being based on my opinion.

    April 2, 2012 at 4:07 pm |
  188. Karina

Hmmm... This leads me to think... I think the penny should be kept. Imagine how bad taxes would be if they took away the penny, It would round up.

    April 2, 2012 at 4:08 pm |
  189. Nina

Although, having the penny is an American tradition and it used to be money, people walking in the streets would actually pick it up some years ago, I think we should discard it.

    April 2, 2012 at 4:14 pm |
  190. Brenden

Keeping the penny would be a good thing because without it if something was $7.99 we would have to pay $8.00 and we would get no change back.

    April 2, 2012 at 4:31 pm |
  191. Bugsy

It is good that they will stopp making the penny so they will save money. But some store will have to change there praces because of it.

    April 2, 2012 at 4:58 pm |
  192. Mykaila

I think it is a good idea to stop making pennies because it is just costing us more money than it should. All the pennies that are out right now can just keep cycling through everyone. Such as, if someone has to pay some pennies to a store, the store will eventualy give it to someone else.

    April 2, 2012 at 5:36 pm |
  193. jonathon

i think that we should ditch the penney. if they cost more than there worth, IT'S NOT WORTH KEEPING THEM. plus if it will save us more money in the long run it'll be for the best. i also think that the penny is kind of worthless because you dont really use them much. i don't know about you but when my total price is 9.99 i'll just get out a 10 dallor bill and 3 quarters.

i don't think it makes sense to make the penny and nickel, they spend more than its worth to actually make it.They should just stop making Pennies and Nickels and round everything, even though the things you wanted would cost a little bit more its worth it.We'd also save Lots of money not producing the penny and nickel.

    April 2, 2012 at 5:56 pm |

What if I want to get something that is 99 cents???

    April 2, 2012 at 6:24 pm |
  196. Naomi

I think that they should continue to make cents but the price should go down by .6 cents.why is the manufacturing price 1.6 cents anyway?I think its silly that its only .6 cents more than 1 cent.

    April 2, 2012 at 6:48 pm |
  197. Calista

If Canada is not making new pennies we can't collect them anymore 🙁

    April 2, 2012 at 6:52 pm |

I believe that taking away the penny could lead to increased prices of many items throughout the country which is why I say that they should keep the penny.

  199. Morgan

I think that getting rid of the penny in Canada is a good idea considering that it cost more to mint a penny. It could help Canada finacualy. It could help them save more money

    April 2, 2012 at 6:58 pm |
  200. Lucille

I think the penny should stay. Why? Imagine what it would be like without the penny: higher, rounded up prices. Even though there is not much of a difference in five cents, stores may make less sales if something says $20.00 instead of $19.99, or, $19.95. I think the penny should stay. Why get rid of it?

    April 2, 2012 at 7:16 pm |
  201. Cameron

I think that they should cut down the process of making pennies. Only make 1/4 of the amount they usually made.

    April 2, 2012 at 7:24 pm |
  202. Will

I think that the penny should be kept because it could lead to higher prices and harder time making change. If you bought something and the total with tax was 6.96, you couldn't give back the 4 cents, so it would be rounded to 7. Also, it costs 11 cents to make the nickel and they aren't getting rid of that right now.

    April 2, 2012 at 7:36 pm |
  203. Joe

Stamps are worth around 44 cents. So people would not be able to buy stamps in accurate prices if pennies were ridded.

I think Canada should stop making pennies because 1. it would save money 2.with the saved money Canada can do a lot of stuff with the saved money. I think the U.S. should follow Canada's footsteps and stop making the penny too

    April 2, 2012 at 8:10 pm |
  206. Jacob

I think they shouldn't ditch the Canadian pennies for two reasons
1: pennies can help people a lot more than you think they can, just think about Canadians on the street they need pennies a lot sometimes.
2: would you want Obama to get rid of American pennies, well that's how the Canadians would feel to.

I think that they should get rid of the penny. It really just tricks you. Stores can sell something for 7.99, which sounds cheaper then 8 dollars.

i think you should keep the pennie. seriously what if you need an ektra pennie?

    April 2, 2012 at 10:04 pm |

I believe that the penny should remain being manufactured everywhere. My reasoning is that a lot of people travel and id they go somewhere to eat or something and they are a penny or so short, what are they supposed to do, starve?

  210. Amber

I think they should ditch the pennines because when you buy something like a book it usually cost $4.99 majority of americans don't pay the extra penny they just pay $5.00 so if they do get rid of the pennines it wouldn't make such a big diffrence.Plus they will save 11 million dollars so they could use that money to pay fo rmore important stuff.

    April 2, 2012 at 10:17 pm |
  211. Cody

I think keeping the penny would keep prices lower; but ditching the penny would save money for the economy, I'd keep the penny for the lower prices, even if it does make the government spend more.

    April 2, 2012 at 10:24 pm |
  212. Julie

I think that the government should't do that because it is just going to affect economy.

    April 2, 2012 at 10:39 pm |

I say keep the penny. If you pay for an item, you get money back, and sometimes, the penny will be apart of taxes.

I think penny is inconvenient and contains a lot of bacterium.

I believe getting rid of the penny will probably not even effect us. Look at our high advance technology, such as the credit card and electronic banking. Why would we need cash especially pennies?

    April 3, 2012 at 2:23 am |
  216. Gingy

If it costs more money to make a penny than what it’s worth, than I don't see why all countries don't follow their lead, because it seems like a waste to spend more to get less. In the case that pennies were no longer minted, things would be bought with exact change or in increments’ of 5 cents, which to me isn't too bad of an image to imagine, less change to carry around in my pocket. All in all, I’d say it be beneficiary for the country as a whole, to stop wasting money to produce pennies since they are worth less than it costs to make them.

    April 3, 2012 at 9:04 am |
  217. Nicholas

ahh i think the penny is very important but if there is anof then they stop making them

    April 3, 2012 at 10:15 am |

hey I say keep them because you never know when your going to need change so keep pennies

    April 3, 2012 at 10:30 am |

I think they should keep the penny. What if something costs $7.99? Rounding up will lead to higher prices. This will affect many Canadians.

    April 3, 2012 at 10:47 am |
  220. Emmett

I think it is a good idea to stop minting pennies. I mean, it costs more to make them than they're actually worth. That's not good.

    April 3, 2012 at 11:34 am |
  221. Taylor

I think the penny is a very important piece to our economy. The pennys are really the most important because of the little numbers and when you get change back everything isn't going to be in perfect quaters especially with sales tax. So not making a penny anymore could cause tons of controversy.

    April 3, 2012 at 11:35 am |
  222. Sammey

I think that ditching the penny wouldnt be a good idea because a lot of people in america save pennies for extra activities to do with their family. So keeping the pennies you find in on the ground, or in your house, or wherever, help them towards things they want to do. If we didn't have the penny, we wouldnt be able to do that.

    April 3, 2012 at 11:35 am |
  223. Katie & Kellyn

The pennies waste the United States money. That money could be spent on other things such as education systems.

    April 3, 2012 at 11:35 am |
  224. Jana

I think the penny should be kept. Pennies add up and can be useful! Without the penny, things will start costing more and/or less. The pennies, when found on the ground heads up, are good luck! Which can make somebodies day that much better!!

    April 3, 2012 at 11:36 am |
  225. Abby

Canada made a good decision to stop making pennies and the U.S. should follow their example and save some money by doing the same.

    April 3, 2012 at 11:37 am |
  226. Karon

I think the penny should be ditched because it is only worth one cent and u can use a dime for ten pennies.
Logically if we exterminate pennies, the world would be a better place because people wouldn't believe in penny suspisions. 🙂

    April 3, 2012 at 11:37 am |
  227. Amy

I think the penny is important to the economy. The penny is the most common coin and if we got rid of them I think there would be a debate about it. The penny should continue to be produced, pennies are very convenient coins.

    April 3, 2012 at 11:39 am |
  228. Sydney

I think that we should ditch the penny because when you put more money in than it's worth, it doesn't make sense. So, ditching the penny makes the most sense to save the country money.

    April 3, 2012 at 11:39 am |
  229. Lark

I believe that, in anyway you look at it, this is above all a positive choice for Canadians. If making the penny causes more money than the penny actually is, it makes sense to give up on it. Not to be rude to these poor little pennys... but I never thought anyone used them anymore.

    April 3, 2012 at 11:40 am |
  230. Raylee

we sould not get ridof pennys because as we all know find a penny pick it up all day long you will have good luck. without pennys we wont have good luck!

  231. Korteney

I think that they should stop making pennies. Most people dont like or use pennies and if it cost more to make a penny then what a penny is worth then why would they continue making them?

    April 3, 2012 at 11:41 am |
  232. Janessa

I agree with getting rid of the penny. Considering the fact that they cost more to make than they're worth, it seems very reasonable that the U.S gets rid of them.

    April 3, 2012 at 11:41 am |
  233. Karon

I think pennies should be kept because if you find a penny heads up it can bring good luck to people. Pennies are useful when something costs 5.99. Logically the worl would be a better place with pennies around.

    April 3, 2012 at 11:42 am |
  234. Derek

I believe that they should keep this lovely penny because it is easier to pay with more exact change. It would be so much easier to keep this copper coin.

    April 3, 2012 at 11:42 am |
  235. Emma

Since the united states is in billions of dollars in debt and we are losing money making pennies then we should just stop making them and lower the debt but the thing is what is people want their penny back i mean you can still use it.

    April 3, 2012 at 11:45 am |
  238. Madison

Ditching the penny is a good idea because thy cost more to make then they actually are so what's the point of making them? People find pennies on the ground almost everyday so if they got rid of them then they could just use the pennies on the ground.

I think that if the penny is costing more to make than it is worth, there really isn't much of a point in keeping it. The money that is being saved from having the penny disposed, can be used for more important things.

If these pennies cost more to make them then they are to actually use them, then it doesn't make much sense to make more, if we already have so many pennies in the world.

    April 3, 2012 at 12:41 pm |
  260. Brooks

I think that by keeping the penny, the government will bring in more money because of taxes. Pricing something at $6.99 looks cheaper than pricing it at $7.00. Which you need a penny to make $.99.

    April 3, 2012 at 12:43 pm |
  261. Gavin

I think they should ditch the penny becuase after all it costs more then it is worth. The government would be wasting money that could be used for something else and every penny counts.

    April 3, 2012 at 2:15 pm |
  265. Kaylee

I don't think that we should keep the penny especially when they cost more than they're worth.I like pennies because they are lucky when their head is up but they are only one cent and that does'nt bye anything unless you have 100 of them and then you have a dollar but all that will get you is some candie or something from the dollar store. So I think we should stop making pennies but don't get rid of the ones we already made.

    April 3, 2012 at 2:27 pm |
  266. Samantha

I think pennies should stay around for a couple reasons. One reason why i think pennies should stay around is because, if you go to the store and you need two cents then you would have to give the register a nickel. It will be hardly impossible to get pennies out of this world because there's millions.

    April 3, 2012 at 2:31 pm |
  267. Adrienne

I think pennies should stay around because they make a difference in money and we use them for donations, cancer, and alot of other foundations.Pennies could be valuable (someday) but maybe just not right now.And someday you may be able to find a rare penny from somewhere thats has a three legged buffalo that could be worth $2000 you could be a lucky lucky person. You could donate some of that to foundations.

    April 3, 2012 at 2:31 pm |
  268. chance

I do think they should keep the penny but they should change it to the 2-cent piece. Also there are a lot of people that collect pennies and i know someone that has over eight-million pennies collected.since the penny is considered a American symbol like the baseball bat so it might be offensive to some Americans to not have them anymore.

    April 3, 2012 at 2:31 pm |
  269. cas

I think that if it costs the goverment 11million dollors a year it could lower taxes because 11 million dollors is a lot. Also it costs 1.6cence to make a penny so they should make 2cents coins so it would save .4 cents

    April 3, 2012 at 2:32 pm |
  270. gwinevere

I think that it would be better because if it cost more than its worth wy make penies. The govermet would not have to spend extra on penies. The Canadian goverment could us the mony they save on helping there comunity.

    April 3, 2012 at 2:32 pm |
  271. Gabriella

I would ditch the penny because it takes up more space and because i'd rather have a dime because its more money. Also a penny cost more than their worth so it really isnt fare. so i say no more making pennies and keep the ones we already have.

    April 3, 2012 at 2:34 pm |
  272. skyla

I would ditch the penny, because you can get nothing with them unless you have a hundred of them.I would not collect one-hundred pennies just for a dollar.I would rather collect four quarters or ten dimes.

    April 3, 2012 at 2:34 pm |
  273. sarah

Penny's are made more than they cost so I think they should only make as enough as they need. But penny 's are good for like if you needed a couple cent's more. The weird thing is that it cost 6 cents to make one penny.

    April 3, 2012 at 2:35 pm |
  274. Tori

I think we should not keep making the penny but keep the ones we already have. Also when there are not a lot of pennys around the U.S.A we should start making more. That is my opinion about the penny we shoud not make more unless there are only a few left around the United States of America cause the penny is a important part of my life.

    April 3, 2012 at 2:35 pm |
  275. Shannon

I think that creating pennies is a very useful way to use money, although, it does cost a lot more than the penny does originally, so tecnically that would cause them to lose a small ammount of money, but I believe it is worth making the penny. Pennies are cute, in my opinion, and useful, and, besides, if you find a really old one, you can earn more money than it's worth!! Canada should definately continue making the penny, even though it may cost just six cents more than it actually is. As I said before, pennies are extremely useful, and I know a few people who collect pennies, and who would love to get Canadian pennies! I, myself, enjoy studying the small ridges ontop of pennies, and realizing there were several other types of pennies out there in the world, and often I study them. Pennies are a symbol to all countries, and so we should keep making them until we find an entirely different type of money in the future at some point, which I am sure we will. That is why I think Canada should still make pennies.

    April 3, 2012 at 2:37 pm |
  276. ashley

i think that we should have the pennies that we had befor and we should still have what we got to make a dollor. and plus it has one of out presadent on it and if we stop makeing thoses they would be verey upset. and i think that any thing that has our presadent on it we should ceep i thinkpennies we need because if we strat makeing pennies would be really help ful because if we run out of pennies the if u got to the store and u get change back like1.01 dollors and what if we dident even have the pennies and it hleps whewen u dont have the money to get some things to the store. i would think those are verey helpful. we should still have PENNIES if we dident have them i would be mad because i sometimes use them. :):(

    April 3, 2012 at 2:39 pm |
  277. Dillon

Yes i think the penny should stay around in America because it`s the only way to get exact change for your candy bar, soda and etc.It also helps with donations for cancer and other types of diseases. So that is why I think the penny should stay around.

    April 3, 2012 at 2:40 pm |
  278. Larkin

I think it would make sense because pennies are worthless to the people. It is not worthless it has no purpose it cost more pennies to make one then to make seven.Thats why we should stop making them.

    April 3, 2012 at 2:41 pm |
  279. cameron

I do not thiak they shold make them at all. caus thay are not werth very much.

    April 3, 2012 at 2:42 pm |
  280. Sammi

Everyone has thier own opinion, but can they express what they really think?
Pennies can help people with thier saving because what can you buy with one cent, EXACTLY nothing so you need to keep saving! I also suppose that they cost more than what they're worth, but it's worth it to me! I say keep the penny!

    April 3, 2012 at 2:43 pm |

i think this will be good to help with their economy

    April 3, 2012 at 3:04 pm |

Pennies are useful. The only thing that the country has to do is raise there value.

Well I think that money is a very important topic for we have stuff that has high demand. Sometimes we need that little extra 2 cents in our pockets. Why stop what might not go to wast later on. Some people live on pennies every day. Well theres one of my five sences for you. Have a nice day and thanks for hearing me out. Peace out peoples. 😉

i belive you should keep the penny because the penny has great value in society and taking it out could ruin the economy

    April 3, 2012 at 5:11 pm |
  287. Garrett

I think we should keep the penny because it is a big part of the history of our money. Also, money amounts would have to be rounded up or rounded down, potentially costing people more money than they should pay.

    April 3, 2012 at 5:12 pm |
  288. AzJaya

getting rid of the penny would only make people pay more or less of thier actual change.

    April 3, 2012 at 5:12 pm |
  289. Ashley

I think the penny has been around for so long that it wouldn't make sense to get rid of pennies all around now. Keep pennies. We all have history with the penny and it has connection to the United States.

    April 3, 2012 at 5:12 pm |
  290. Darren

I think that it is quite logical to get rid of the dam thing if it costs more to make then it is actually worth. Chances are its worth more in scrap metal than it is real currency.

    April 3, 2012 at 5:13 pm |
  291. Myriah

I think the penny should be ditched because it is so uneconomical to make because of its limited worth. The minting of the penny is costing the government hundreds to thousands of dollars, yet it isn't making any profit, so the making of pennies is just spending tax payers money.

    April 3, 2012 at 5:13 pm |
  292. Daniel

I think it is a good idea to get rid of the penny, because from what they said it cost more to make it then it is all worth all together.

    April 3, 2012 at 5:14 pm |
  293. David

I don't think canada should keep pennies because they cost more to make than there worth also all that money could go to a waste if alot of people loose pennies every day

    April 3, 2012 at 5:14 pm |
  294. Jared

I believe that canada should stop minting pennies. I think this because they are losing money by making pennies. Even though it will be an inconvenience for citizens and buisness owners a like. Canada may need the money for other items of importance

    April 3, 2012 at 5:14 pm |
  295. ethan

I think that canada should not get rid of the penny but find a way to make it cheaper. They should keep the penny to make it easier for shoppers and store owners if they keep the penny and that way canada stays the same with every one else.

    April 3, 2012 at 5:15 pm |
  296. Samuel

I think the penny is unconstitutional. It costs almost 2 cents to make a penny (which is one cent). So therefore our country is 16 trillion dollars in debt thanks to the penny!

    April 3, 2012 at 5:16 pm |
  297. kerrigan

i think that we should not keep the penny because even though the price might raise on items it will only be by 4 cents at the most

    April 3, 2012 at 5:16 pm |
  298. Christopher

I think keeping the penny would be better. If something cost 3.63 and we didnt have pennies, the price would either have to increase to 3.65 or decrease to 3.60, and I think that could easily effect Americans in there own ways.

    April 3, 2012 at 5:18 pm |
  299. Clara

If we were to get rid of the penny what would happen to prices, $1.99 would turn into $2.00... The penny is somewhat important in the fact that without it, prices would go up.

    April 3, 2012 at 5:18 pm |
    • sebastian

true i would pay 2.00 instead of 1.99 cents, so i cant stand that.

I think that the penny is not totally needed in the u.s. because we cant use it very offten an half the time people just throw out there pennies or drop themon the ground.

    P.S. Carl I love you!

    April 3, 2012 at 5:19 pm |
  302. Samuel

Pennys in canada have a very pretty queen on them and leafs on the back. These leafs are awsome. I think that the penny should not be ditched because it would be like throwing away a queen and some awsome leafs. The penny is also very shiny which can make you feel like the queen on it.

    April 3, 2012 at 5:23 pm |
  303. Claire

I feel that pennies arent nessesary in prices today, and should be retired.

    April 3, 2012 at 5:23 pm |
  304. Conor

I think it it is useful for people because stores often write prices as $4.99 or $5.95 so it makes it look cheaper luring customers, also when you get change back you can get an exact amount instead of too much or too little. Without this you stores may lose money because prices are more exact and people will think differently.

    April 3, 2012 at 5:32 pm |
  305. Abbie

I think we should keep the penny. It has been around for years. To stop making new pennies would be like to stop making houses or growing apples. The penny is part of our history. Save the penny!

I think cents is kind of useless when it comes to shopping, but it can be helpful in other ways of life. I have two agruements to get rid of cents...
    1. It's kind of a pain to grab exact change when shopping and then carry it around all day.
    2. It costs a lot of money to make just a penny! It's not right. In that case, the penny that we use should be worth more money to spend.

I also have two agruements to keep cents...
    1. Cents helps kids with math. Having kids learning to count, take away, and many more skills you can learn with having money (cents).
    2. If we get rid of cents it might save money for the companies that make the money, but groceries, gas, and everything else would just get more expense! Its already worse enough that gas is nearly $4 per gallon and that red meat is getting nearly $10 a pound!!!

In conclusion, cents should STAY in my opinion...
By The Way, sorry, I made a mistake on my first comment.

I think pennies are important. . . The only way to make correct change. . . Id vote to keep it

Why would you keep making the penny if it costs more to make than they are actually worth? It's not only a waste of time, it's a waste of money. The people who make Canada's currency are there to have their job and make money for their families. If the buisness isn't making a profit, how can they pay their worker's? Then the workers don't get money. They then lose their job. So, if the buisness wanted to invest their time in making a new kind of money to profit on, that would be more logical thinking.

I have 2 different opinions.I think we should keep the penny because it would make prices of goods higher. For example $2.57 would turn into three dollars because if they lowered the price, than stores would lose money.
I think we could also ditch the penny because most people buy something using dollar bills. If something was $4.95 some people would just give the cashier $5.00 and get change back.

but what if something costed $21.91 and you only had $21.90 you would need that penny if you had no more bills

i thimk it is reasonable because if canadian goveernment keeps earning -o.6 cent per penny, the country can even earn a debt

It's not only one cent. It's more then that. It's just like saying ten dollars is just ten dollars. I think they should keep it. The reason is because it's been in our lives for so long. If we throw it out of our lives, how will the little kids learn when there is bigger numbers to add with.

I think that the penny should stick around, I mean what is the point of having penny candy and things that cast 1.99 where does the extra cent come from?

    April 3, 2012 at 7:28 pm |
  313. Evelyn

Well I think both but then I realize that if the canadians keep the penny it is a terrible choice so I think now DON'T KEEP IT! 🙂

In this economy we all want to save money, so it seems like a good idea but getting rid of the penny will also raise prices

    April 3, 2012 at 7:41 pm |

I believe that even though the minting of Canadian pennies exceeds the monetary value of them, the sentimental value far outweighs the money issue. It would be nice of them to find some way to lower the cost of making the coins.

i would not use the penny anymore because it is not being made any more,so its not a good idea to use them anymore.

I think that it would be in our best interest to abolish further production of pennies; With our economy as bad as it is, additional costs for something as unnessecary as pennies is just another burden. Some may argue that it's easier to give back change, but people could still do that since we wouldn't be getting rd of pennies just ending the creation of new pennies.

    April 3, 2012 at 8:47 pm |
  318. Jayden

I think instead of getting rid of the penny altogether, we should make a new type of penny that is cheaper to make.

    April 3, 2012 at 8:50 pm |
  319. Jayden

Since there are both pros and cons to ending the production of pennies, I think that we might as well try to quit making them. If we do not find it beneficial, we can always return to our old ways. After all, you learn from your mistakes.

I think we should keep pennies; we've kept them around this long, so they must not be too much of a burden.

    April 3, 2012 at 9:05 pm |

I believe that we should give the abolishment of the production of pennies a try; Our economy is so bad we should give whatever could possibly fix it a try.

Some people seem to have a kind of sentimental attachment to the penny. I mean who wouldn't its small and its got Abe Lincoln on it. Keep the penny!!!!!!!

  323. Ryuku

I think they should stop making the pennies. It costs more to make the pennies than to spend them. Imagine how much money the government is losing every day! We still are able to keep and spend our pennies, so the pennies should still be around, so to me, it makes sense to stop making cents.

    April 4, 2012 at 4:53 am |

I really think we should ditch it. It's because there's no benefit making it when they decide to keep it.

    April 4, 2012 at 5:38 am |
  325. Sofia

I think they should keep the cent because it would be easier for kids that don't know how to add or subtract money. How will it make it easier for them to do the math without a penny?

    April 4, 2012 at 9:03 am |
  326. Haley :)

I think it totally makes sense to ditch the penny. I think it is a waste of time and money to make so many pennies, but what if you bought something and it cost $1.99 and the cashier owed you that penny. The penny should be kept around but not made as much as it is. The penny is really not that important but should be kept around.

    April 4, 2012 at 9:07 am |

I think that the U.S should keep pennies because we need them. Say if something comes up to $3.41, and you give the cashier 4 dimes and a nickle. You wont get your change back. Pennies does add up too! All the prices would have to be changed and there are trillions of things in the US that are not rounded to a whole buck so that would take precious time.

I think the money should stay around because its going to be hard on business but then they cant make stuff be like 8.99 they will have to make it reasonable.

  329. Erin

I still think that the government should keep the penny. If they got rid of it, prices of certain things would have to be all in even numbers.

i think that they should keep the penny. They need to keep the penny because then you can get the exact amount of change back if they keep the penny. Plus it is an easy way for little kids to start counting change by using the penny.

    April 4, 2012 at 11:13 am |

pennies arnt just one cent, in a while those pennies will add up. So I say don't get rid of the pennies.

I think that they should have kept the penny because money is money. The next coin to the penny is the nickel and so what will Canada do when I someone needs to get their change just give them nickels?

  345. Lilly

i agree that it does cost alot but maybe they should just cut down on making them. i know at my house we have a penny jar and when we fill it up we do somthing with the money like going out 2 dinner or getiing a pool pass but pennies do matter just in different ways to different people.

I think the penny should stay because it apart of government money. Every now and then you might need a penny and if the penny doesn’t exist anymore then you can’t get a penny. A penny is worth it might not be as much now but in the future they might be worth something like the old time penny’s that just came out and you never know they might end up worth something valuable in the future. Penny’s is a part of money it might be one cent but it make sense that the penny is in the American government. You never know when you are going to need a penny that why it a good thing that we have penny’s here in the United States.

In my opinion, pennies should keep being produced. Economically speaking, discontinuation of the production of pennies will gradually hurt businesses. Here in South Carolina, taxes on a purchased item are $0.07 to every dollar that is spent. Getting rid of pennies means that every time someone here purchases an item, businesses will lose $0.03 to each dollar that is spent. If twenty people make a purchase of an item of $1.00,without the production of pennies, that business loses $0.60 every twenty people that made that purchase for that amount of a product. The loss of that amount will add up at the end of each annually or quarterly quota report.

  348. John

They won't really be getting rid of it, they will just stop making new ones. It won't really affect anything for a while because the pennies in circulation will probably stay in circulation for a long time.

They should keep the penny. Maybe they could find an alternative method of producing them so it is beneficial, or not distribute as many.

    MAKING CENTS MAKES SENSE
Eliminating the penny is a losing proposition because it will result in rounding to the nearest nickel and higher prices for working families. This increased cost to consumers will be felt in everything from the grocery store to the gas pump. Pennies add up to millions of dollars every year for charities across the country. Simply put, the penny plays an important role in our everyday lives and in our nation’s economy.

In Korea where I live, we have a kind of coin that worths a cent. But since it was too expensive, we didn't ditch the pennies, but we reduced the size of the pennies.

I think we should keep the penny because if we don't, then prices will rise. For example $1.99 would turn into $2.
