A School Goes Old-School

In the technology-rich environment of Silicon Valley, a school is going technology-free:  no computers, no SMART boards, no Internet.  These things are being replaced with chalkboards, physical activity...and an old-fashioned education.

The question for you is:  Will this make for a better education?

I think it is wrong because technology is what brong everone together and schools need it to do daily lessons and to teach students, the students are the future generation.

Yes, however when you think about it, we didn't actually get technology until we did research with things that are not technology like the Encyclopedia. After that, some genius guy decided that we needed something simple so we didn't have to flip pages and get paper cuts and finger-aches (if that exists...).

Well it can be good in some ways that way they wont use lots of electricedy also it can be bad in some ways like some kids need it to help them learn!! im just saying from my opinion!!!!!!!!!

        # dont judge!!!!!

i think that this insn't fare because technology makes students want to learn.also we student love technology.
it is the best way to have fun learning.

      • Tyler

It depends on the student. Some will have more fun with technology-based activities, and others with more old-fashioned methods. So no method is the "best" way.

I agree with you, but technology can also be a distraction in the classroom. Kids should have the opportunity to use technology because it opens up new options, but they also need to learn to use their brains.

I do think that you are right, but technology is very expensive today. Instead, those funds can be used on more useful things, such as sports, the music department, and after school academics, where students can spend more time focusing on physical education and the amazing talents that they have!!

    • Daniele

i agree with you because students need the computers because the real world uses computers and other things to get around...Like a job, most jobs have computers and the students will get so used to the "old generation"

    • anna

I think its fine to not have technology because kids rely on it too much and need to learn without it and it helps them focus a lot better on how it was in the past.

No because the school computers have tutoring programs for the students. And takeing away that Privlege takes away a chance to learn!

    March 15, 2012 at 6:54 pm |
    • Sarah

Real people can tutor just as well as turtoring programs. Giving students experience interacting with one another is more important than ease of use. People have been learning for thousands of years without technology, and just because there is now an abundence of it doesn't mean it has to be incorporated into everything we do.

Most likely not because kids are now using technology now a days. It will make it less interesting. like in my class has this cool new smart board and more people want to get up a share. That's why I disagree.

Don't forget that also in the non-tech world, we have chalkboards and whiteboards, too that people would want to interact with also... *giggle*

I think he means that the technology encourages kids to get up so they can use it.

I think this is a great idea. The way it used to be done worked very well, and I don't see why our society demands that we change it. It would save the school money, and the physical activities would allow them to become more active. It would also take away the unnecessary distractions many students have because of technology. This would benefit the teachers, the students, and the school. I don't see any reason why they shouldn't.

i dont think it will because the teachers can tech better and we all foucus on one thing

yes , students are odessed with the internet. mostly students use technology for other stuff instead of education. kids need to learn how it was back in the day. Yay! For the oldies

    March 15, 2012 at 9:37 pm |
    • Sammy

No, we need to teach about how to succeed in the future, not in the past! This is exactly how America will and is falling behind in education. Yay! For the kids who need to be rightly educated

      March 18, 2012 at 12:40 am |
      • Hallie

I think you are right. We need to be teaching children how to be prepared in the future. The children may be getting more exercise but once they graduate they need to know how to deal with all the technology in the world now.

I'd like to go there. I honestly like old-style things, and I think that without the distractions of technology, kids would be able to learn more.
Technology can be useful, like Discovery Education, but at that school, the teachers teach, and don't let technology teach for them.

YES. This way students will be more hands on and interactive with each other. They will also learn how to look for information without trying to shortcut themselves. They will use something called books for research and their heads for math, instead of calculators.
Technology has been proven to make a society less interactive, more likely to be depressed, and has proven that over the course of time that it helps people to use less than the 10% of our brains that we are supposed to. Over time with technology we became intelligent, and now we are backtracking.
I see nothing but good coming from this.

I think no technology in classrooms will make a worse education, because it is more fun for students to learn with technology. Also, computers and internet provide free dictionaries, which are easier for students to use than the normal dictionaries. When writing, students tend to write less because they get tired, while on the keyboard, most students can write a good essay.

I think that is terrable. how are these students suppose to learn how we do things in the 21st century, while there learning how do things in 20th century.

    March 15, 2012 at 10:00 pm |
    • Despues

Aren't those two centuries relatively similar? We still had TONS of technology in the 20th century.

Not at all! I don't think that going old school will make for a better education. In this world there is NO way to escape technology. You should embrace it not reject it. Not having technology in a school will not equip student's with the knowledge they need to survive in today's ever changing world.

I agree. We make everything with tech. That school building is made of wood, iron and our building-making tech. So that kinda education is not right. It can do some goods, but I think that is wrong.

I think that no electronics is good for younger kids because The less we have the more we can concentrate on our paper work assigned by our teachers, not printed off the internet.

  14. alejandro

they wont listen so it doesnt make a differens to do that so why bother?!

    March 15, 2012 at 10:20 pm |
    • Despues

? What do you mean? I'm having a hard time understanding what you're saying. Are you saying that the students won't listen to them as in the teachers because they don't have technology and that without it, it's boring? If so, I'll try my best to answer.
The school in itself MUST be a higher-curriculum school, and if the kids don't listen to them, depending on their policy, they'll fail and probably get kicked out if they disrespect the teachers/staff or even the students in any way, shape, or form. I'm actually pretty surprised that the school CAN afford not having internet. And I don't mean that in money. What I mean is that now that we have all of this tech stuff. REALLY REALLY high tech stuff, and it's hard to go back to those roots with encyclopedias and dictionaries. They probably write on Papyrus, too. The school might not have the ELECTRONIC valuables, but they have the ANTIQUE valuables. In other words, there's more brain in doing it the old-fashioned way. With electronics, it's doing it for you. YOU have to do it.

Even thought it seems easier and more modern to use technology today, using an old-school method can be more effictive and simpler to give the information not having to worry about technical glitches or internet problems during the lesson.

    March 15, 2012 at 10:20 pm |
  16. Evelyn

Well yes it's better with out technology because you dont have a lot of distractions and you get to pay more attention in class and have more respect to the teachers and in other country's they don't have technology and they have better chances of getting really good chances of a good education.

    March 15, 2012 at 10:26 pm |
  17. Calista

Yes because since they did not have no computers and internet i would give them those stuff that they don't have.

    March 15, 2012 at 10:37 pm |
    • Despues

But wait, wasn't it their choice to have no internet or technology period? It's very nice of you to send them the things they don't have. It's just that they chose not to use/have technology. Plus, as you saw, the students, parents, and teachers/staff at the school think that it's a good experience regardless of the fact that their parents have a bunch of high-tech stuff in their homes. Whether or not the kids choose to use it or not or CAN'T use it because their parents say the can't because of their school not having it is all because they wanted to. And as far as I'm concerned, I think I would love to venture this school and if I enjoy it enough, I might want to stay for a school year. Maybe longer. Depending on the age range.

it will not make education better because technology is all over now days

In some ways yes, children will understand the importance of basic education and increased physical activity. On the down side, without the skills to use technology in day to day life, these students will have difficulty navigating in the real world.

the modern world is only making life without technologoy harder. its good that they are learning off the computer but if students go completely without technology, we wont have the skills to be succesful in the real world

  21. jeff

i believe in there college years they will be left out because of technology being all around. as well who to not think that their parents will end up using computers in the household so as to destroy the purpose of this concept of a no tech school. as well cell phones could possibly be used in the classroom as well unless the school has taken those away as well.

I think that it's wonderful that the schools are interacting more with each other then with technology. We tend to learn more from working with the teacher "old school" style then we do with our faces glued to a screen.

  23. Miguell

Technology is a distraction to most people. If we remove technology from school, there should be a good reason. Any kind of technology in a school should be used for academics and learning, NOT video games and/or viral videos.

This will further their learning, with no technology. But it would be faster with technology.

  25. Kyu-Ry

YES. Why some teachers make a school like this? Because it is much better than the other schools. It is surprising news that this school in the Silicon Valley, the center of the IT techonolgy, but in my opinion this means sometimes old-fashioned education is give us many lessons.

Since technology has come in our lives we have been using then too much instead of chalkboards we can have white boards. I think that we should have limited technology and limited time with technology. We should have a balanced life and if we can study with both our studies will be balanced too.

    March 16, 2012 at 5:22 am |
  27. Larissa

I believe it all depends on the student's preference, whether no tech schools can make education better. If you learn better without the "distractions" of technology, then the education of a no tech school will help you better progress as a student. However, if you are used to the fast and easy advantages of technology, it may be very hard to adjust to a school without it.

I don't think old fashion school is better than new one. In Japan, almost schools are old fashion school. But I can't think Japanese students are cleverer than American students. So both new fashion and old fashion schools has problems.

I think this is right because then kids won't go home and be on the computer, and watching TV, and spend their life doing that.

    March 16, 2012 at 6:55 pm |

I think that it's a bad idea because, when you are working on a hard question, and you answer it you don't know if the answer is right or not because, you don't have the technology to check and see if it's right. Later on in your life if your in a classroom that has and uses technology then you won't know/have the right skills to do what everyone else is doing.

    March 16, 2012 at 7:00 pm |
  33. Mohammad

I think they've took it too far with no technology, because some people need some sort of technology to speed things up. Also, it's easier for teachers to teach.

yes,Because kids now a days think that they need a computer for everything. So it would help the kids see how people use to live in the early times,And realize they dont need a computer of cell phone for everything.

There are postives and negatives to this story. I want to make sure that I get this all out before this closes.
I honestly LOVE the fact that students get a chance to experience what it's like to live without technology. I noticed that when you do more non-tech stuff, you learn more patience and patience can help you with loud, obnoxious children (MY FAVORITES!!!!), school (HEY!!!!), work, etc. Things like sewing can help improve your patience. Sure, sure, sure, if you want to hear a song or find the newest thing out that would take a while to find out in an almanac, you'd have to use the internet or something tech-like. But why not use your imagination, your brain, and stuff, and write your OWN songs. It'll improve your skills at singing or writing songs. Then you can show them to your friends, teachers, parents, and they can give you feedback. It's always fun. And if you don't want to write a song, write a book, whether it be about yourself or from your imagination. A healthy imagination = a hard-working person, because if you have an imagination, it'll be easier for you to occupy yourself when you feel lonely.
Now on the other hand, technology is AWESOME. I'm using it right now. I use it all the time. But it doesn't mean I don't go outside and play with my friends and talk. If I want to write a book, I can type it, which is SO much faster than writing. I can look something up and get a bunch of different opinions and facts about something. I can write a review on an article and reply to many different people's opinions (Like I'm doing now.). MILLIONS of things I can do. I don't see why the school couldn't have at least one electronic thing. It doesn't have to be a computer. I'm thinking more of surveillance cameras to protect their school, because people steal from schools.

Anyways, I think I've posted enough, I'm gonna play some videogames. LOL. SEE YA!!!!

I think that there are pros and cons. Technology is a completely different way of learning and it teaches so many new things that children can use in the real world. But having no technology give students a chance to focus on learning and physical education instead of being distracted in the classroom.

    March 17, 2012 at 12:00 pm |
  38. Kylie

Yes, but no. From now on people will be making more and more electronics. If these children don't learn how to use these electronics they will be lost when it comes to using them in the future. On the other hand, it is important to use basic education.

    March 17, 2012 at 12:06 pm |
  39. Austin

No, in the future, when we have even more technology, the kids that grew up not using technology won't know how to use it, so it might hurt them in the future.

In today's invierment its important to have some te h experiance, almost every Job has electronics in the work place without skilled employees a businesses will go under

    No

    March 17, 2012 at 3:02 pm |

I think it could be good and bad. Good because it will teach kids about basic educational resources. Bad because technology is what brings the world together, as one

  43. Jaira

I believe that having technology can help you because it can prepare what you will use in the real world, but with no technology then you won't know what to use.

    March 17, 2012 at 3:52 pm |
  44. Diamond

I think it would give them a better education, because they wouldn't get distracted by any other television show or movies.

    March 17, 2012 at 5:16 pm |
  45. Lola

I'm kind of in between the two ideas. It's a good idea because it can make children more active and get them on there feet to not always rely on electronics to do the work for you. But every thing has it's down side and the events down side is that even though it it great to not rely on technology now days technology is whats going on in the real world and one of the schools responsibilities for a child is to help by preparing them for the real world.

    March 17, 2012 at 5:20 pm |
  46. Ty

I think there should be educaton with tecnology so the children will learn responsibiity and to take care of the electronics and it will be boring without computers in a class room.

    March 17, 2012 at 5:44 pm |
  47. Catherine

i think that it is actually a really good idea! kids now are WAY to reliant on computers and phones and all that. More schools like this could defiantly change things for the better! students would have to actually pay attention to the lesson and not just wait till the last minute and look it up.

    March 17, 2012 at 5:55 pm |

We need technolgy. Some of my books are really old and there are so many changes(e.g. cournty names, new terms/ discoveries) . My second hour echer always usses the smartboard

    March 17, 2012 at 6:06 pm |
  49. Alyssa

I think it's great that a school wants to do that, but the world is all about the internet, so the students won't have the same knowledge as their peers in other schools.

    March 17, 2012 at 6:55 pm |
  50. Ariana

Yes, I believe that going technology-free will make a better education because all kids do nowadays (including me) go on the computer, text. etc. almost all of the time. It will be better for the kids to communicate with their peers and teachers in person better.

    March 17, 2012 at 7:16 pm |
  51. Steve

I think that getting rid of technology isn't the right thing. We have created technology to interact with it. The reason we have it is to make life easier, not to ignore it's abilities.

    March 17, 2012 at 8:03 pm |
  52. EJ

I think using no technology is a very good idea. Children can learn to live without depending on technology. Also they can stick to traditional ways of learning. Children can still have great fun . There will be no distraction for them so they can concentrate on just learning. There should be more school built withouyt technology to show that we can live just the same without technology.

    March 17, 2012 at 8:44 pm |
  53. JonMarie

I think, that having this "no-tech" community, will allow many opportunities, and many loses. Think of it this way, when we used to have no technology in the normal day classrooms, we still managed to have very smart and educated people around in our world.

    March 17, 2012 at 9:53 pm |
  54. JonMarie

This is really a self-oppinion question. some people enjoy old-style school with no technology, just a teacher, a desk and pencil. Other people like to be introduced to new things, and want to have experiance with the new enviornment. I really can't decide.

    March 17, 2012 at 9:57 pm |
  55. Jenny

No, the old-fashioned education will have too many negative impacts. Of course, it will help children understand the basics of education. But today's teachers and students are so used to the advanced technology and without it, it will take a while to adjust. Also, technology is the key to the modern world. The students are going to have a difficult time living their everyday lives.

    March 17, 2012 at 10:06 pm |
  56. Trask

I think that it has it's ups and downs. Without it people will have to probably do things a lot different then other kids do and they will probably have trouble in the work force when they have to do a report or something on a computer. But it could get rid of distractions that may hurt their learning experience, to have no technology at school.

    March 17, 2012 at 10:57 pm |
  57. Alexis

In some ways this is a good idea and others not so much. Mostly every person in the world relies on technology no matter if its school, work, anything. You don't see many schools in the world without technology stuff. Think if any kid came to that school they would be lost because everyone is used to technoloy, doing their homework on computers, everything being wrote on the smartboard, internet for research. Kids would have to work harder without technology.

    March 17, 2012 at 11:53 pm |
  58. Sammy

This is the worst idea a school has ever had. The 21st century school needs to prepare kids to work with computers and other technology, so they can succeed when they grow up. In this day and age, we need to teach kids how to succeed in the FUTURE, not how to succeed in the past!

    March 18, 2012 at 12:36 am |
  59. Cincia

In a way, this is a great idea, because students interact with each other and are more active. Also, they don't spend all their time in front of a screen like lots of people are doing these days. But since everyone is using technology, the students might have difficulty later on handling screens and technology since they have no experience.

  60. Alissa

Everyone feels like an outside now a days and electronics alienate us from our peers even more. The no electronics schools builds trust and communication without relying on text messaging and other multimedia forms. People want to feel accepted in society and in a no electronic classroom everyone gets a chance to make a name for themselves without having any technological history.

    March 18, 2012 at 2:37 am |
  61. James

no because the kids wont have the skills to have very proficient, evolved job.

    March 18, 2012 at 8:34 am |
  62. thomas

Well I would not take technolgy out of schools. If you need to look up something that they need, but the good thing is thst they woul not get in trouble for looking up something that is aginst school policy.

    March 18, 2012 at 8:46 am |
  63. byron

I agree with both thomas`s but I think it is a horable idea becouse trying to supply that many chalkboards and chalk for that many students will make the taxes increase, but that is also a good idea because it means students won`t fry there brain cells because they are not constantly on the computer

    March 18, 2012 at 9:13 am |
  64. Hamzeh

First it will make student hate school even more and without technology it will be harder for student to learn or do research. thet sudents should have say in it cause adults only think that might help the students but they don't really know for sure. students have got used to technolgy you can't just take it away.

    March 18, 2012 at 9:35 am |

Exactly, Students will not want to attend school if teachers take away their lives, which are basically hooked on computers and stuff

A BETTER education is a relative word. Two people can argue opposite perspectives as to what a better education is. A technology-free school would allow students to focus more on the subjects taught, however some technology only increases efficiency when learning, such as the SMART Board.

I think it's a great idea because most kids these days only rely on technology. I think it's a great idea because it gets kids to think a lot harder

Yes and no because the old fashion books they can look up information and they use text books to look up information they need for a project. The no part would be they have no computers and if they can’t find information in a book they need to use the internet and they are old fashion and some of those text book are so old. Another reason is that they won’t have a calculator for math that they need they do it all by hand and I don’t think k I would like it by not having a calculator because I need my calculator for math. No technology is ok at a certain point but sooner or later the world is going to be filled with technology and we just can’t get away with it. It used in our natural lives all the time.

  68. Katrin

I think it might actually be a more efficient way to learn because you have less distractions and have to think more about answers instead of a website or yahoo answers doing that for you. They rely more on their brains.

  69. Tahirah

i think becasue the world is based on technology it is in intrest of the teachers and students to prepare them for that type of world. if they dont know how to use a computer then how are they going to get a job. now in days computers, phones, TV have taken its mark on the world. im not saying dont use the books but find a balance in using books and technology so that you have the best of both worlds

i think it might actually teach the kids some things on how they use to teach back when are parents were in school

I think that if you can get your hands on something it's easier to learn about, but I also think that completely removing the technology that makes information easy to obtain can hurt the students

yes because if school has technology is the new era and if don't have technology if would be all wrong.

I believe that a return to old-fashioned education is of a great benefit to the students of Silicon Valley. Technology such as smartboards and computers can divert students away from the true purpose of why they are at school, which is to learn. Since there are students with financially strained families who do not have computers, they will most likely spend more time marveling at the computer than learning. Futhermore, a majority of students will be tempted to log onto a social networking site, such as Facebook or Twitter, when a teacher is not present, which obviously slows down the educational process. With the technology society currently has, the bulk of America's schools will be tempted to spend a majority of their funds on technology rather than spend it on a teacher that is better qualified for her job than than the usual public school teacher.

  74. Mike

I don't think this is a good idea because we are always expanding the technology in our country especially in education and by taking it away we are hurting rather than helping the students.

    March 18, 2012 at 5:15 pm |
  75. Hunter

I think it is a good thing. That way they will learn to use a dictionary correct. In my school most people don't know how to.

    March 18, 2012 at 5:28 pm |
  76. Michael

This does not surprise me as all education trends come back around to where they started!

    March 18, 2012 at 5:53 pm |
  77. Mell

Of course this will make for a better education! Most kids think they can't survive without technology and they're wrong! In fact, I think that the old school way will strengthen kids even more mentally and when they grow older they'll know how to work both ways, with or without technology.

    March 18, 2012 at 6:47 pm |
  78. Johnny

I think it would probably be better without technology because you are staring at a lot of bright lights for a while, and it is kind of distracting.

    March 18, 2012 at 6:52 pm |
  79. Nissaba

My school uses Promethean boards, Dell computers, and a lot of technology. When there is a question in class that our teacher can not answer he/she Googles it. Having technology in the classroom allows brains to explore and new questions to be answered.

    March 18, 2012 at 6:58 pm |
  80. Mariah

I think this is a splendid idea for maybe the ages of K-8 students. However the point of school is to educate us for the future that awaits. Sadly the future only seems to be advancing its ability to use technology, not to down-grade it. I think students should be limited and have the skill of being educated without the use of technology but when they are mature enough they should also be taught to use technology in order to better there future.

    March 18, 2012 at 7:06 pm |
  81. Maria

I believe this is actually better for us students because we won't get distracted so easily. We can actually pay more attention to what we are learning which would be bring our grades up. Instead of going online to get answers for homework, they can actually look it up and also learn what it means or does. Technology sometime lets us go to other websites to listen to music, play games, or go into social medias then paying attention to what the teacher is saying.

    March 18, 2012 at 7:27 pm |
  82. Steve

Although it may seem right, technology-free is not the best choice. Sure we could show students that there wasn't technology back then, or much, but we should be grateful that we have it, and not ignore it.

    March 18, 2012 at 7:46 pm |
  83. Alex

No. If you did not have any technology, we wouldn't be watching CNN Student News, wouldn't be doing research on a project, and teaching kids at my school on a SMARTBOARD

    March 18, 2012 at 7:54 pm |
  84. Leah

It just doesn't make sense to me. Technology is all around us now, you can't make it go away.

    March 18, 2012 at 8:13 pm |
  85. Hayley~

I think this is right because then kids won't go home and be on the computer, and watching TV, and spend their life doing that.

    March 18, 2012 at 8:29 pm |
  86. Katrina

I don't think this is a good idea for the school to do because kids today need to have technology in School to help them prepare for the future for Jobs and where everything could be computerized. Laptops will encourage students to learn and want to attend school more often. Students will be getting better grades and alot more smarter by giving them the Electronics to learn.

    March 18, 2012 at 8:55 pm |
  87. Reem

Removing electronics from Silicon Valley School is a good idea and a bad idea and these are the reasons why. It's a good idea for kids not to rely on electronics all the time and use diffrent resources. It is a bad idea to the remove electronics from the school because kids need to be familiar with the using electronical devices for the future.

    March 18, 2012 at 9:20 pm |
  88. Kosty

Removing the electronics from the Silicon Valley school is not a good idea because electronics have brought us far in education, and will keep advancing us mentally in learning situations. This will not make a better education because the world we are in will keep on technologicly advancing, and computers and other technoligical supplies will boost education greatly in our society.

    March 18, 2012 at 9:20 pm |
  89. Cale

I say yes it would make for a better education. What would they be really taking away from school? Not a lot. There aren’t many computer classes at my school that a kid cannot get afford to not have for his or her education. Most the things taught on computers at school could easily be done just as well at home. Kids are computer savvy enough these days to teach themselves the skills necessary to excel in life after high school. I don’t think there was any time in my education where computers improved my knowledge or learning ability besides maybe in calculus and trig using an advanced graphing calculator this year as a senior. Most or all of the kids my age learned to do math by writing it out, reading with an actual paper paged book, and writing and English with a pencil and paper. Truthfully, I don’t think I would notice the difference, besides I couldn’t check my email and listen to “Party Rock Anthem” in my downtime.

    March 18, 2012 at 11:08 pm |
  90. Zach

I think we should teach students by using technology because the world is not going to go old school. Technology will get more advanced and I think those students will be behind on how to use technology since they didn't learn by using it.

yes because technology might make people stress and stop physical activities and won't know what is happening and only game game and socialize with other and not learn and do homework.

  92. Em

yes because technology might make people stress and stop physical activities and won't know what is happening and only game game and socialize with other and not learn and do homework. every one knows technology is helpful in a way like CNN online to access it easily and it has some bad things about it too.

  93. Brian

yes and no because sometimes people take forever looking in textbooks and some of the info isn't in textbooks they would have to look it up on the internet.

    March 19, 2012 at 7:55 am |
  94. brandon

I think it could go either way depending on the student's wanting to learn.

    March 19, 2012 at 8:08 am |
  95. Ms. Rice

The middle school where I work in Northern Kentucky, has done just the opposite. They have recently implemented a "Bring Your Own Device" program where students can use assistive technology by using their laptops, IPads, cell phones, etc.. in the classroom for research and group projects/assignments. The program has been very successful and students have been more engaged in the learning process while using their personal devices. Students also have learned to follow the rules when using the school's internet wireless network. I truly believe School districts nation wide would greatly benefit if they would be more open minded about combining learning and technology instead of fighting the wave of technology which is here to stay.

    March 19, 2012 at 8:55 am |
  96. Daniel

This is not a good way to teach students because today's society relies on technology. Without technology, we (humans) will lose out on job opportunity. It may be fine when the students are younger, but once the students hit high school and college, they will be lost and "computer illiterate"; most jobs out in the job industry requires at least some knowledge of a computer.

I think that a school is going back to old school style must be thinking a crazy thing of trying to making kids learn the old way and not depending on technology.

the future will have a lot to do with technology and computers so i think that they should have computers and internet and such.

    March 19, 2012 at 9:59 am |
  99. zane

I think that the old school teaching is a awsome idea it keeps kids sharp and they have to use chalk boards and chalk and not computers and have to work stuff out by hand on chalk boadrs. I think by use old school teaching it also keeps kids from being distracted and they can concentrate more on there work and not other things. The only bad thing about old school teaching is eventualy the schools going to have to switch to technology to keep up with the technology in todays world. So in my opion I guess old school teaching is a good idea and a bad idea.

  100. adrian

It would be harder for some students to work. Imagine not being able to look for research on a social studies project. But it will save alot of money for school events.

    March 19, 2012 at 10:47 am |
  101. Nick

Yes. Technology has often been a makor source of distraction ( such as when students text in class, when they visit a different website on their school computer, etc.) So to take that away will have some very positive results.

    March 19, 2012 at 11:02 am |
  102. Angie

Education is education it shouldn't matter how you receive it, as long as you do receive it. But I do believe that technology can access much more information.

I think no techology would be good for students because they interact with other students and be more active.

    March 19, 2012 at 12:48 pm |

I think a school with more hands-on activity is okay, but most schools depend on technology now, so taking it away could cause the school to lose students and not very good grades.

I think it is ok for the school to take away the technology but the not so much because they cant really connect with the outside world, like news and what is going on around the world and maybe just outside their classroom.

  118. kelby

I think that they are doing the right thing. Its kind of funny everyone that is blogging right now are on some type of technology. So we know that were technology at our school.... but really i think that it is fun to not have technology!!!

    March 19, 2012 at 12:51 pm |
  119. Emma

I think it's a good way to keep children focused on each other and not focused on their computer. They also probably get a lot more excercise.

    March 19, 2012 at 12:52 pm |
  120. Ashlie

I neither agree nor disagree with this situation. It is nice that students are getting away from electronic devices and technology, but they need to be able to use the internet and calculators for research and quick answers. That school district should be allowing some more time for students to get their work done! : ]

    March 19, 2012 at 1:07 pm |
  121. Matthew

people depend too much on technology, if it wasn't used as much we might be able to get things done.. Plus surfing the web can also get students off topic and not learning as much.

    March 19, 2012 at 2:04 pm |
  122. Fayez

I think kids depend on their school & self study more than technology.Sometimes kids use technology and they don't focus lesson. They see it more as an entertainment Tool than education.

    March 19, 2012 at 2:04 pm |
  123. dakota

well we do need to rely on our brains and not our computers! we have brains to use them not to sit in our heads.

    March 19, 2012 at 2:05 pm |
  124. Ethan

It is not a good thing to get rid of technology. Lots of people do say that it is not good or maybe it is better to learn without it. Maybe that is true, but today, technology is everything. What if you got out of school and was faced with all these gadgets. We need to adapt fast otherwise we will never catch up. This school should bring back their technology sources and understand it will be a better decision to leave them there.

    March 19, 2012 at 3:42 pm |
  125. Miranda

This is basically the technology generation; kids shouldn't be deprived of technology. We aren't studying for the past, we're studying for our futures, so we should know how to use the internet, how to write a paper, etc,.

I AGREE,schools shouldn't have computers because it wastes energy because kids could be out there actually working and trying. It will make it harder on kids but will also help their writing skills and many other things.

i think that every school should should have technology cause it can help u with your education and give the teachers a little rest cause they don't have 2 give the students a math lesson the computer could.

Using no technology I think is a really good idea because if we use just computers and calculators and that kind of stuff then we wouldnt get that much smarter because technology is doing it for us!If we dont start doing this by ourselves and working hard then what would this world look like?

    March 19, 2012 at 4:52 pm |
  141. Sabrina

I think not having technology is a bad thing because if they need to look up something thats not in a book they wont be able to look it up.

    March 19, 2012 at 4:55 pm |
  142. Robert

I think that new technology should be in all schools but stuff like chalk boards should be replaced by white boards. The change from new to old should be within the schools budget, like if the school has a lot of money the change should be fast.If not it should be slow. But as mentioned in sentence one there should still be white boards.

What ever happened to paper and pencil?Today its computer, phone, ipad,or laptops. Students say its better to use computers instead of paper because its saves air and trees for us to breathe. Others say that its easier to use paper and pencil rather than computers because its waist power. To me i have to agree with technology[computers] rather than paper and pencil.

    March 19, 2012 at 5:00 pm |
  145. Lauren

I say no technology. Since the economy is running slow, why not limit or even take away the technology schools in the U.S have? Schools that have very limited technology probably are doing the very best they can to keep the school interactive with a better education, involving computers. They can't afford it! Schools will save thousands of dollars a year without technology. It would be much better with tech.
Students will have an opportunity to interact with students. They will also be able to meet other students who they haven't met yet.Doing physical activities everyday will increase physical education and improve behavior by following directions. Being "old-school" is much better. NO TECH!

    March 19, 2012 at 5:14 pm |
  146. Flourence

I think that students learn better when they dont have to just look at a book. They are more attentive when you switch between different kinds of media.

    March 19, 2012 at 5:25 pm |
  147. Javier

I think that it is good that they have no technology because it couses distractions but the bad part is that they aren't going to hav computers for research so they have to read books. It also delays school work with out technology. In the end, it is good that 98% go to college but they wouldn't learn how to use a computer in the future.

    March 19, 2012 at 5:26 pm |
  148. Alyssa

I say let them do it. If they think the children will learn better without the distraction of technology, then by all means... go for it!

    March 19, 2012 at 5:36 pm |
  149. CJ

Students today need technology to learn and succeed in the future. They need to stay in the present, not move into the past. There is a lot of learning using computers and other forms of technology.

    March 19, 2012 at 6:00 pm |
  150. Allison

I don't think it will benefit education. Text books and assorted materials are often so outdated that we need the internet to figure out what's going on now; for example, the events in Libya and Syria are historical, but not in our history books. Not to mention, how can we teach children to innovate if we aren't using innovative technologies in the class room?

    March 19, 2012 at 6:04 pm |
  151. Sam

i think that schools going old school is a really cool idea. Looking at it from a educational and scientific aspect, i think that it will inprove social skills, and those students will have high grades.

it really doesn't changes the education and it doesn't changes how we learn because they could still teach us. But on the other hand it's hard not to reaserch anything on the computer. Also i think they'er just doing to much will the changing, they should just leave it how it is now because there is really no trouble with what we have now.

    March 19, 2012 at 6:42 pm |
  154. Erma

I could go back to flat irons, wash boards, and coal oil lanterns, but WHY WOULD I WANT TO?! I am a public school library media specialist and I can tell you that my students are learning how to research, evaluate sources, and locate information using all the technology available to them and when they get out into the real world, they will need these skills. The world will not go back in time to the old-fashioned methods, so education must keep up! Example: Encyclopaedia Britannica has just announced that this will be their last print editions – only online editions for the future!

    March 19, 2012 at 7:02 pm |

I think that you should keep technology in school because it helps the learning environment stay fun and it teaches the students how to interact with the educational virtual world. KEEP THE TECH-KNOWLLEDGEY

  159. Marian

Using old-fashioned teaching methods in a technology improved society will not enhance students' education because those methods were helpful for students who were learning less complicated topics in the past than what students learn today. Since the concepts students learn today are more complicated, modern technology is needed to help students understand those harder topics.

I think that it wouldn't make it better because they would get left behind in the technology usage and they would need to know how no use a computer and all of this new technology for future jobs.

In some ways it's good and some ways it's bad, computers can be useful sometimes but other technology some kids can be too into it.

I think that this video has been going up the rank because people have realized what is happening in the world and how bad it is. It take more than one person to make the change I think that this guy has really made a change by publishing this video.

I say yes and no. Yes because it will be good for the kids not to depend on technology, and No because technology is a part of us. If you have used it you can't let go

I think that we need the technology because it helps us do many task that we would not be able to do with books. I also think this because most teachers use the computers to do their work also

Yes and no. Yes because there might be less distractions and more focus on what is being taught. They can’t stray off on some sight while doing their assignment or disrupt class with a phone. On the other hand kids may rebel or become bored which in the end may cause them to lose focus and not concentrate. How many kids go 8 hours of school and pay attention every minute without getting bored and needing to stray off a few times? Not any that I know of. It sounds like a good idea to try but I honestly don’t think it will make it very far since technology is growing more and more every day.

I think it is clear using technological devices makes children easy to understand the subject because it can visualize the subject they can't understand well. A cause of the educational problem we're faceing now is not only technoloby.

I think that taking away the technology from kids is a bad idea. Later on in life when we get to college or get a job we will need to type and use technology. It is easiest to learn at a young age and it is best for children to learn when we are in school.

I think that getting rid of all technology is not a smart thing because the kids are going to have to use it pretty much everyday when they grow up and they need to learn how to use it .

Without Technology there is no subjects in school, we all need technology in our lives we are trying to make the the future easier not harder.

I think the meaning of school is to prepare you for the future and in the future there will most likely be technology. So when we are young we should learn how to use technology and work with it.

I think kids should be allowed to use technoligy because it keps them caught up in World criseses. And current events

i think its a bad idea because people need computers to learn from them and have a lil free time from teachers. And its more eaiser to get on a computer and do math probelms and reading and stuff like that so if i was the teachers or in charge of the skool I WOULD BRING IT BACK!!!!!

I think its good for schools to go technology free for awhile, so kids understand whats its like to not have it. Kids theses days are soo addicted to their phones or their computers that they can't even have a good time with out always haveing to have their phones and text. Its actually a little annoying to me. I think that the school should also not let them use their cell phones. I know people in ou school would cry if they took away all of out technology. They just can't live without it. and thats sad.

I think they are trying to prove a good point but I think its taking away from the students learning. With the enternet you can research and find out more. And when they take notes the teacher will have toi write them on the board and it would just be easier to project them so its harder on the teacher. So by taking away technology they are taking awaay from kids learning and putting more work on the teachers. I think its just to prove a point

I think technology is a good idea, because we can learn about a variety of topics quickly. It has also allowed all of us to communicate in this posting.

We think this story is getting so much media attention because it needs to be stopped. Without any media attention nobody would know who he is or what he does and he would not be stopped.

Well we believe that it is a good thing. In a world filled with technology, we should be introduced to these tools as early as possible so that we can be successful in this advanced world.

Too any jobs require you to use a computer, so if you are not taught how to use them, it will be even harder than it is now to achieve.

I am a school student and I think we should keep technology. People are using technology now and school is for now not then. Nowadays kids forget textbooks and page numbers but online techbooks take care of that, kids need to reaserch stuff and computers make that faster so teachers can get on to the next lesson, there are youtube videos that can teach stuff faster then a teacher might, teachers can get assinment papers from online, Ipods take less room and can do what a pencil/pen and paper can do. Sure kids text and facebook and tweet and stuff but it makes them well them, and no matter what you do. And isn't school spose to help lids be themselfs.

i think it is an interesting idea to not have technology but what about learing how to use the technology for later on in life because if we keep up on the new technology we will have many new high-tech things they will not know how to use.

I believe that it's okay to go old school, we do use computers a lot but we always shave things like encyclopedias and other sources. I actually think we could lay off the computers a teeny tiny little bitty itty bit. It's okay to have schools with computs, because I also think It gives an advantage, but there is nothing wrong with going old school.

It is a good idea. It's not like you have to go to that school, and it's a good option.

That is a really good idea. You don't have to go to that school, after all. You an go somewhere else and use technology. But no tech has advantages.

I think to many kids depend on technology but kids should still learn how to use it because they might need it for when there adults or for there career path.

I think Its a good idea to use less technology but no technology is extreme because when you are older and are in college or in a job you use technology a lot.

I think they should get internet, technology, computers..., because all of the other schools do, so why shouldn't they? It would be different for the students, since last year my school finaly started to get Ipods and things like that. But it was a different experience for us, I would just like to be there one morning to see their faces when there are computers sitting in their classrooms. But it all adds up to, they need technology at their school.

I think it is a bad idea and a good one. If there is no technology then that means no CNN. But a good one, possibly writing with pen and pencil will help with grammar and spelling. Even most of the words in the comments are spelt wrong or used with improper grammar.

I think all the students would learn more better. All of the teachers would not be on there cell phones or kids. Everyone would be friendly and more "down to earth".

Since this school is replacing all technology, it will cause the students to earn a better education. Without the distraction of modern technology, the students will be able to become paragons among their piers. Using computers may not be beneficial if used in a cogent manner. Fortunately, the students will get to learn more about the past of their ancestors and what they endured. The hardships of the earlier years would be unbareable for this generation. Clearly, the removal of technology is beneficial to the students at this school.
