Kony and Social Media
CNN Student News reported on Joseph Kony last October, and he'd been covered in various other newscasts before that. But it was a recent viral video that made him infamous across America.
As you'll see in Tuesday's program, the war is over in Northern Uganda, and Kony's force has fled to other African countries, though it still holds children captive. The viral video about Kony continues to spread. And we'd like to get your take on that: Why do you think this story is getting so much attention on social media?

Honestly, i dont think there is an exact reason this story is getting so much attention on social media websites. I think that not many people knew about Kony and the terrible things he is putting these poor children through. So, when the video was put out there it seemed as a shock to many people there for they wanted everyone to see it.
Honestly why did they have to bring it up months later. And since the Internet is so big theses days,all they probably wanted to do is gain popularity in the world. And since he has done that why doesn't he stop? Kids are humans to and they should have their rights too.
People at SMS are putting up posters and some people are writing "STOP KONY" on thier knuckles .
This is rediculus what he is doing and what some people are putting on thier hands.
I honestly agree with everything everyone is saying.
i think that Kony is getting so much attention because he is doing something that would never happen here so everybody is really shocked and wants to share it with their friends.
People must know that there are people like Joseph Kony around the world and that he should be brought to justice. It's wrong what he's doing to kids and it's unacceptable.

Anytime children are involved in dangerous situations us as kids want to help and spread the word to as many people as we can.
I think the reason why Kony has so much attention is because the youth of America feel involved. A great amount of us kids spend a good amount of time on social networks, and it's through these networks that we saw the video of other kids suffering such a terrible fate. It helped us see that not every kids life is as great as that of an American kid, and we cannot stand seeing that! That's why Kony has so much attention. That's why we feel a desire to act!
Kony has gained in popularity recently all because of a 30 minute video on youtube. Now, dont get me wrong, if you took the time and researched the whole ordeal, i applaud you. And if we lived in a black and white world, i would say, god bless you all support this. But we dont live in a black and white world. All of these accusations of Kony...are of 20 YEARS AGO. Now people from Uganda, perfect law abiding Ugandan citizens, are saying, "what ? waht are you people talking about." Another thing, Invisible Children is a VERY shady organization, they advertise as a non profit organization, but the fact of the matter is, the leader of IC, makes 80-100 Thousand dollars a year, off of this NP organization. I just dont see it possible. And now people are saying that the United States should step in and be the world super hero and spend OUR money and risk OUR troops lives, just to solve a problem, that we dont even know if its fixed or not. I hope you have taken time to read this

i think it's going so big because it's a story the media loves news and stories and in the movie the war is over so it's really touching to see even i have seen it love it.
Also the parents and the children were homeless and i will give them blankets, pillows, clothes, and toys.
Thanks to the help of the internet and certain famous websites like Youtube, it's been easier to spread the news since our generation is a "computer" based generation. Young adults or teenagers would find the video easier as for say on the local newspaper.

The reason why Kony 2012 is getting so much attention is because organizations want to spread the word about Kony, since the internet is the strongest way to get peoples attention everybody will post the problem on the internet and it is an issue that is close to our heart.

Joseph Kony has been kidnapping and has manage to escape for years. I think that we should do everything we can to find Kony. Innocent and young children is being kidnapped and they have the right to live. I wonder what is a main reason that kony is doing this. I still wonder why can't we catch kony. People are making him famous as the video says and people are doing this night walk and make the world to know him in 2012. Everyone knew that watched the video and spread the word around the world so other knew.
Before this video came out, 99% of the American population never heard of Joseph Kony. Joseph Kony has kidnapped over 20,000 children for use of fighters and sex slaves. As a part of their initiation, these children are often required to kill their own parents, so they have no home to go to. Imagine you being one of those 20,000 children, wouldn't you want someone to know about it?
I think there are more ways to help make him more famous. We are living in somewhere else and we are trying to make him famous by making a night sweep, creating groups in facebook and sharing status.
The reasons that the social media wants the world to learn about Jospeh Kony because he has commited crimes we cannot see. When the video was relased. The ICO(Internatial Criminal Court) already had him in the wanted list and everyone didnt know that.

Kony is taking kids and making them part of his army. I don't know if the government is bad there, but what he is doing is wrong. It is cruel. When they grow up, if it is their choice to fight for their country they can go ahead. But forcing and capturing kids to fight isn't fair.

Nowadays capturing children without their own will is illegal. And with this law over the world, Kony is vandalizing human rights. Kony is capturing children for his own good and this harms the children mentally and physically. This is why the media is bringing the Kony outbreak as a huge news.
People want to make the world a better place and be a part of a revolution. The video is an easy way to catch people's attention and get them passionate about stopping such horrible crimes on humanity. The video makes it easy to participate.
Not just in America, Kony also got his name known in Asia over night thanks to the video made by Mr. Jason and also due to SNS. The video clarified its goal, showed us an easy way to join, let us know how to take a real action other than just simply showing sympathy without doing anything. Just as what the video last mentioned, we're living in a facebook world, a bigger no boundary community. With this easy accessible tool plus the astonishing info about Kony's against humanity deed the video conveyed, I believe there is no reason for most of us who watched the video to just ignore it.

Social networking has seen expodentional growth over the past few years. There are millions if not billions of people who are frequently on websites like Facebook, Google +, Twitter, Tumblr, youtube, and other social networking sites. This makes social networking a breeding ground and a great bulliton board for stories like this. People know if they post something, it will see millions of people in a very short time.
I think that it gets so much attention because it is so inspirational. The first time I saw the video, I was shocked that this was going on in Uganda. It was so insirational that my friend and I are going to walmart on April 21, 2012 to put up Kony stickers. I bet I will see tons of people doing the same thing.

While this is a legitimate issue, the controversy around Invisible Children is going to overcome any progress they attempt to make. Since they are a non-profit, finances are made public, we now know Invisible Children's organization is shady. Around 70% of donations and funds they acquire do not make it too the children and instead go to their personal salaries, film-making, and other non-direct assistance.

The story deals with kids our age group. I'm 13 years old and it hits home with me because kids my age are being kidnapped. Also, because I have seen it on Facebook, all my friends have been influenced by the video as well.

Kony has indeed been terrorizing the Ugandan area for a long time. Now he is out of Uganda due to our nation's young peoples' efforts. But my worries are that he might have moved out not from fear of the US government but to expand. Hope not but we should always be ready for his danger.

I think this story is getting so much attention partly because it's very interesting. There are plenty of stuff talking about wars and certain types of groups going up against other people, but this person, Joseph Kony, is getting children to fight. And alot of adults may care because these children are being kidnapped. Also, other kids might be interesting because those are other children.
Also, I support Kony 2012. I don't think it's fair to take away children-whatever family they come from, whatever color they are-even if it's for a good cause, kids should never be taken and used to another's advantage.

This man "KONY" is taking little helpless children that can barely even fend for themselves and cant even take care of eahcother. He's getting little kids to fight wars and he's getting kids as young as 9 years old to take fight wars. Our troops needs to go to Uganda and help the little babies. Once again history repeats itself. A similar thing happened around 30 years ago. A foreign country is "in distress" so we make it "famous" and help by getting rid of the ruler. And then the second in command takes over, but that doesn't matter because we "dealt with the problem."

Vitamin A Deficiency (VAD) kills over 600,000 children every year and nobody seems to know about it. Thousands and thousnads of these children could be saved by a few tweets superstar tweets.

I don't think it is fair for the children. They are taken from thier families to fight in a war. They were untrained and probaly won't be returned home. The reason that this has taken off in social media so much is because the video shows what the children are forced to do. With all the social apps and technology these days, it is very hard NOT to know who Joseph Kony is. I learned about the thirty minute video on twitter and I watched it. The power of technology is becoming stronger and stronger.
This video uses a lot of propaganda techniques that makes it almost unbelievable. The cause is good but the video makes it look like too good. Research says most of the money doesn't even go to Africa but to their campaign here in the United States. This is an unreliable source in my opinion and people should research it before becoming involved and giving their money to this organization.
I think something like the Kony video allows people to feel like they are doing something to change the world without needing to put in a lot of effort. All you have to do is click the like button or tweet about it, and you feel like you've done something good.
If the government isn't doing anything to try and solve this problem, then Kony should be able to do whatever he wants. He should be able to do what he wants with the children if the Uganda government isn't enforcing its national laws.
This is a SCAM, because the US discovered oil in Uganda 6 months ago and there are other people saying that he died 5 years ago. Even if he's not dead he was only really bad like 10 years ago and haven't struck in 6 years, so this is just a scam for the US to get more oil.
To me Carl this seems like a passing fad for teenagers and if they are serious to support the cause the cause by being dedicated and sending money or supplies i say it is good. Okay every one that wants us (America) to intervene think about it, do we really have the funding for another war, also Kony's army of CHILDREN, we are going to war with a bunch of kids if we intervene and fight the LRA. Now think about all the "bad parts" of where you live, gang violence is a big thing here (America). Gang violence takes kids lives here and destroys their futures, with drugs and violence, how many kids have been killed by random gang violence this year? What Kony has done (and may still be doing) is wrong, and really should be stopped.
But, there are some flaws with the Kony 2012 video. Invisible Children is notorious for false information and exaggeration, making things seem more urgent than they really are. This video is no exception. In their video, they showed the top 10 most wanted for the ICC, saying that Kony was number 1. In truth, he's number 6.
And, the war in Northern Uganda is over. Has been for a while, and Kony has been out of Uganda for 6 years. I don't see why the Invisible Children Foundation needs donations for it, the situation is already being fixed. Instead of getting involved in ANOTHER war we can't afford, we should just step back and if the situation heats up again, then we go in with a full force and put down the LRA for good.

There are several reasons for the Kony video getting so much attention most noticeably the bandwagon effect where someone post something simply because everyone else does. I'll tell you why this "KONY" campaign has been so successful. The director/producer did such a great job creating that emotional, human appeal that so many people like to see. They did such a wonderful job walking viewers through a step by step process of the problem at hand, how it came about and how it affects us all as well. In recent times, there have been some pretty revolutionary movements driven by social media. So, to target social media with this movement was just appropriate. Reminding the world that they all have a voice and can make a difference in some area that they, at one time, would never have been able to do, really is proving successful.

There are many people that have a facebook, so once someone puts a a video like that on there, then it is likely for it to be noticed, and people will watch it. There are also people that do not have a facebook, so some people may not have cared about it until now. I think someone needs to stop Kony, because he can not keep taking kids like this.
I think its just because to many people spend to much time on Facebook and don't have a life. They will be on Facebook 24/7 365 and don't look to our real world they just sit in front of there computer or phone and when its on Facebook they are there to just sit there and reply like and dislike.

I think the reason why the video has "taken off" on the internet is because more kids and quite a few adults go on the internet to look at things on their Facebook or on Youtube. Rather than TV or the newspaper. So there is a bigger chance that they will see it when it's on the internet.
Its weird because Abc and all the others news show. But Facebook has about billion browsing over it so somebody had to watch it and spread the word. Same with twitter. Twitter gets about the same amount of people. The Kony Campaign is a really good idea. But Osama Bin Laden did something bad and President Obama did something about that. Then why wont President Obama do something about this.I think it would be right if the president sent the Navy Seals to take down the Kony campaign. I think that the video got so famous because so many people were ignorant that Joseph Kony even existed. So once everyone knew he existed everone wanted to help. All the video made me thinks was "If I were old enough to join the army I would certainly do all I could to stop convince my leader to help."

I think he got soooooooo much attention on social media (facebook, twitter, myspace, etc) because so many people are on those websites at one time and some of those people basically live on youtube and so they were probably going to see KONY 2012 andthen they share it. And then more people will see it and more and more...... etc.. And most of those people will probably support making kony infamous and capturing him.

It is just awful what Kony is doing to these kids! They are children for crying out loud! Josesph Kony is a terrible man to be convicted for multiple accounts of abuse, and kidnapping. People in The United States who see my comment, there are kids that need our help and support. They lose their family,they get taken and abused. It is not their fault. They want to grow up, be treated right, be loved, cared and be successful as an adult or parent. NOBODY wants to be abused or kidnapped as a child and be forced to become a soldier. These children are being forced by Joseph to have a weapon in their hands and having it be illegally used. I think it is very popular on social media because they have sympathy for these children and some people that really care would do whatever it takes to get the children out of the source of pain. Well I've watched the video and the Invisible Children Organization wants to have any one, any age to be involved and be aware. They've made it so that anybody can help and make changes. The issue is a serious one and it needs to be handled with. Not be ignored and avoided like it has been in the past. This is our last and only chance to reach out and show that we care, and finally capture Kony.

Even though I don't know what this is about, I think it is a horrible idea to keep innocent children captive. They could have a better life in an orphanage than in little rooms filled with boys and girls. They should be rescued or released back to their families. If Kony finds nice homes for them, then I wouldn't have a problem with it. I think people are just watching his video because they want to know if the children will be okay. I also think that they are watching to find out what Kony is doing to them and if they have been hurt or what their living conditions are. 🙁

I think it is a childhood stealing thing Kony is doing. The fact that only the U.S. cares about doing something is astonishing. I hoped to see more groups involved, but that just states America is a truly amazing country.

The Kony story is getting so much attention from social media because of our reliance on social media. A shocking story such as Kony spreads like wildfire. People feel inept and helpless to do anything, so they do what they can, liking and sharing the story to hopefully call someone to action who can do something.
Kony 2012 was just an excellent video, and its director made it very interesting, so it only takes one group of people to really like it and post it on Facebook for the whole world to see.

There is two resons I belive.
1. More people have the abilty to use the internet. Today more and more people have Facebooks, Twitters, etc so people post videos on there and their friends/ followers will pass it on. Then there friends/ followers will pass it on. It will keep on going
2. Kony has Not been metion in the news for a while. So people probaly forgot.
