Pardon?

In legal terms, a pardon means someone convicted of a crime is forgiven or let off the hook.  Presidents and state governors sometimes pardon criminals, but as you'll see in Friday's show, that can come with a risk.

We'd like to hear your thoughts on what a president or governor should consider when pardoning a criminal.

нєℓℓσ. I think that any President or Governor should consider to pardon a criminal. Its either fair or not, but I think that it should be up to the to President or Governor. It not the people's choice, its the President's.

I hope they would consider choosing those who were almost deemed incessant in court and wonder why they are releasing the criminal- and what could happen if they did. If they think about the cause and effect of his/her release, use some common sense, and are decisive when considering whether or not to pardon the criminal they will most likely make the right decision.

I think pardoning a criminal depends on what they did if they did murder they shouldn't but if it was drinking alcahol or too many spending tickets then they have to sign a contract saying that if they do those things again then they will have to spend 7 months in jail

they should see what they did, and then decide if they deserve to and are safe.

I think they should look at the record of the person who's accused of the crime before they make any decisions. Also I think they should analyze how bad the crime is.

I think a pardon should be issued only when we really "forgive" a person. The murderers spoken about were convicted and they, according to law, were not pardoned.

I think Governers should really look hard and a criminals background before giving them a pardon. They should look at if they have a family at home, or if they had a job. They should also look into the crime more.

When it comes to pardoning criminals, I think that it should always depend on the crime... such as if you were to weigh a boutique theft against arson, and you had to choose which one to pardon... it would be the theft. Since that person caused a crime yes, yet it created no physical damage.

I think the governor and or president should take into consideration, what crime they committed in the first place, and they're behavior while in prison.

I think it is only acceptable if the criminal has learned his/hers lesson very well. And to make sure of that officials should put them on a strict lying test. I do realize that pardoning a criminal in some situations can be a big mistake but that probably happens 5 percent of the time. Lastly, if the culprit did not keep his/her promises then they should be locked up in jail for life to secure the safety of others.

To me pardon is the forgiveness of a crime. I don't think that is Acceptable. For my opinion a criminal is a criminal and there's nothing else to that. It's like trying to erase a criminal's record or letting them off easy with commiting a crime.

I think that any governors and the president alike, should take the severity of the conviction given to the criminal. For example, pardoning a convicted murderer versus pardoning a counterfeiter. And with the overcrowding of prisons being another topic of choice, that could explain such hastily given pardons.

    January 13, 2012 at 1:56 am |
  13. Ben

They SHOULDN'T give pardons in the first place. If there's a murderer in a federal prison, I don't care if he or she has a job or can vote. If they release this kind of people, then it will make people feel less safe, and that could lead to more problems.

It would be wrong to pardon someone because of what position they hold, no one should be above the law. When considering whether or not to pardon a criminal you should consider the nature of the crime. It who be morally wrong to pardon a convicted murder. And it would be wrong to pardon a person who has done the same thing before.

I think that they should take account of earlier crimes and be a little more careful about who they let out. Especially if they have done multiple crimes.

I think a president should choose wisely, sometimes criminals act nice and gentle, but when they are let go, they get to their old tricks again, they should also look into the permanent record to make shure they haven't done something similar already

  17. Will

Well, if someone is convicted of a murder, or has committed a murder, then it would be the smarter/common sense answer to not let them out of jail. And when you hear about all of the murders in Mississippi already, just think what this will do. I think it is just a mindless decision.

They Should think about the bad things that the criminals can do when they get out of prison

I think that they should consider the magnitude of their crime more carefully. That way they can help avoid that person committing that same crime again.

I think that criminals should be pardoned. It would help lower the unemployment rate and help poor businesses.

Yeah they should be able to vote and get jobs but why let them get away with it. They had killed a person. Just say if that person he killed was your wife. Would you still let him out?

  22. Joe

I think a governor or president should look for the how bad the crime was if it was something trivial like stealing something it should be OK but if its something like murder i would want to be a little more careful when it comes to pardoning them.

    January 13, 2012 at 9:20 am |
  23. Alexis

They should let them serve there time in jail and then when they get out they can find jobs. They should be able to vote in jail so they don't have to let them out and so they don't run away like the other 4 did.

I think the should consider if the person if the have not done a murder, if they stole from a store or something they should be pardon.

  27. Gina

What you should do is you could leave them in jail until there time is done or you could make them do a cleaning job in the jail so they could keep track of them and that would be there punishment.

    January 13, 2012 at 9:22 am |
  28. Olivia

They should consider how much they are trusted and what they will do when they are let free

    January 13, 2012 at 9:22 am |
  29. Megan

I think that a governor should consider, first of all, what crime was committed. Like if the criminal in consideration committed murder, they should not be pardoned in the aspect that they might take a mind to murder someone else, therefore being a danger to society. If they did something like stealing, then they might have a chance to on the scale of what they did. (As long as they didn't hurt anybody.)

    January 13, 2012 at 9:22 am |
  30. Jake

They should consider putting trackers on them so they know where they are at all times, and should not let them out of a certain area, and if their gonna go anywhere they should have a parole officer with them.

The people should have to call in every day and ware an anklet. The people should be able to vote but it will be hard to find a job.

    January 13, 2012 at 9:23 am |
  32. Daniel

I think that when a president or state governor pardons a criminal then what they should do is put an ankle bracelet that as a gps on it and put it on him/her so if he try's to run away you can find that person easier.

    January 13, 2012 at 9:23 am |
  33. Andy

I think that they should not pardon criminals because the people could run away like the 4 people did.

    January 13, 2012 at 9:23 am |
  34. Natalie

I think presidents and state governors should consider what crime the person committed and how many times they have been in jail or prison before giving them a pardon.

    January 13, 2012 at 9:23 am |
  35. Dylan

They should consider warning them before they let them out and tell them if they do not check in they will send someone looking for them and for the person to be let out he should have to be good for 3 years and do what the guards tell them to do and another thing before they let them out they should put trackers on there foot

    January 13, 2012 at 9:23 am |
  36. Jason

The people should have a tracking devise on there ankle or arm that they can't get off until they prove they are being a good citizen.

    January 13, 2012 at 9:24 am |
  37. Hunter

I think they should make them be under house arrest or something so they know where they are at. Just for 3 months or something like that. Also I think they should only let the criminal with small charges. And not let out criminals with murder charges or any other big charges. So that way they dont try and do the same thing. Also if they do let out murders and make them under house arrest for a year or something like that.

I think that the state should not let people out before they are done severing their time.

    January 13, 2012 at 9:26 am |
  39. Rachel

I think that they shouldn't because they could go out and kill 30 people and then get let off the hook again and then do the same thing. Pardoning comes with consequences and maybe they should stop pardoning people for bad things they did.

    January 13, 2012 at 9:33 am |
  40. zane

Personalty I think if you have committed a sever crime such as murder you should do the time for it not get off scott free for something and wont mean they might go out and kill another person. But if its a less sever crime then they should maybe be pardoned for what they did wrong. If its a crime like murder i think they should spend the time in where ever they get sent for there punisment to keep them from killing someone else while getting out of it due to a pardon.

I think that pardoning should be done extremely carefully. If you think that someone might be dangerous still, have a few people follow them for a week or so.

    January 13, 2012 at 10:02 am |
  42. Brianna

They should consider thinking what criminal act they committed and if they would ever do that again they shouldn't really just leave them off the hooked because they washed their windows or washed their car or something similar to that.

You shouldn't really pardon any murderer because, if you let them out of prison or jail...they could possibly murder more innocent people.

When a president or governor wants to pardon a criminal you should make sure the criminal doesn't go and doesn't call their officers to check in with them.Like the 4 murders in todays show that ran off and didn't call their officers.

I think that the governor was not thinking when he let the prisoners go because they can go and do what they did before they went to jail.

There are many things that presidents and state governors should think about when pardoning criminals. They should check and see if the criminal has made any similar offences before. If so then they should be in even more trouble because they have already been warned or arrested.
Also, they should take into consideration what the defense said in court. If there was a good reason for someones doing such as they were threatened to be shot unless they stole something then they should be somewhat pardoned where as if someone killed another they should have no pardon whatsoever.

I think that if a president paradons criminals he is putting himself and him country in danger. Because if he lets him out he might take it as an advantage. He/she could start doing the crime again and hurt people.
I dont think it is good if they paradon criminals. I dont think that the president even has anything to do with it if it is not in the white house.

  51. Alexys

I think that a pardoning is bad but also good. It would be bad because the criminal has a family. It would be good because the victims family would want some justice. I think either way its bad or good that is what i think.

    January 13, 2012 at 10:22 am |
  52. Gabriella

I think that the people who have had criminal records should be in jail for as long as they need to and not be pardon for it. If they have a horrible criminal record the they should be in jail for it. The governor and the president should not consider pardoning criminals from jail. People could be in more danger then they already. Pardoning is a bad idea.
I also think that if they do pardon that people won't like it. For the people who want to see their relative is to bad. We don't want to be in danger and more then we already are. We don't want to feel like we have to hide all the time. They should't pardon the criminals.

People in the government should keep the criminals in their jail. It is important to keep them in their because you dont want to let them out and for them to have no brains and do something bad again. It is stupid that they let them out because you forgave them and that you dont think they will do that again.Pardons are a very bad thing, because people are out to kill other people.
The government, cant forgive them and let the "loose." I think that they would probably go out and kill somebody again, and you cant take that persons life back. That there will be more harm around the world.

  54. karen

i think peole should be more responsable and help other people on the world that need help. some peolpe need to stop the criminal thats going around the world .

    January 13, 2012 at 10:24 am |
  55. Annie

People in the government should be very smart to keep the criminals in their jail cell. It is completely stupid for someone to let out a criminal just because you forgive them and you think they wont be bad again well thats not always gonna be the case. The govenment i think dont see that they are putting the people in more danger than they already are. For the people in jail are in there for a reason and that reason isnt to be let out and cause more harm around the world.
Also I think that people who are let out think that they can just do it again until they are out back in. Pardon should not even exist in this world. The people of the U.S.A will rebel against the people who are doing this is what i think and what everyone else.

    January 13, 2012 at 10:24 am |
  56. Ashlyn

I think that people that did a crime should be in jail a long time because they will just continue to the same thing again. The president and the governors should never pardon any criminals from jail. People should stay in jail if they have done something bad. Pardoning is not a good thing.

I like if they do pardon people they will just do something bad again and will be in jail again. The president and the governors should not put the people in danger. I think they shouldnt pardon people.

    January 13, 2012 at 10:24 am |
  57. Abbi

I think pardoning is good to a certain extent. Injuring someone is no excuse but for smaller crimes should have some freedom. It may be a risk to have someone out that has commiting a crime but having someone happy or having some unhappy and angry that has committed a crime would have a better chance of going again or doing something even worse.
The President/ governors should take into consideration that not every thing was meant as harm or to harm someone else. Putting someone in jail doesnt mean they wont do it again it just means you have more time to yourself and with other people who have commited same or even bigger crimes. So not all should be forgiven but for they should have another chance.

if someone is convicted of a crime i think that the president or governor should stay with what they decided when they found him guilty . beacuse if they dont stick with what they decided , they will never be able to do as they say or to teach other people from right and wrong doings!!!!!!!!!!
And when they release the people that was convicted of the crime , they will always end up doing the same thing and end up back where they started. so i think that the president and governor should stay with what they decided!!!!!!!

When the president or the governor pardons some one they should take the persons past history into count. If this isint ther first ofens and has not improved, it should be well thot out wether or not he/she should get pardond.

I think that pardon is not so bad because the criminal also has a family. Its also not a good think because the victums family might want them in prison.I think that is not okay because the victums family dont realy understand that people dont have to be locked up all their life to change their ways.

    January 13, 2012 at 10:26 am |
  61. Alex

I think that pardoning will be bad because the criminal might do the same thing that he/she has done before. the victums family might want to be safe like the saying safe than sorry.

I think that criminals that are pardoned should atleast have evidence before. If they do not have good evidence they should be jailed. if they have good evidence i think they should atleast keep an eye on them.

When they pardon them they should have a really good reason for doing so because they might do it again and think that they can get away with anything.

    January 13, 2012 at 10:29 am |
  63. Amanda

If someone is convicted of a crime I think that the president or the govenor should have the choice to what they want to do to that person. But if the govenor and the president say we shouldn't send him to jail. But the Judge found him guilty then they should sent him to jail. But if they found another person doing the same thing and the judge and govenor send the person to jail. Then it wouldnt be fair for that person to go to jail and not the other one.

When someone is bailed out of jail or released. Then they will go home but they will end up doing the same thing as last time. But will they end up back and jail probably not.So I think that the president and the govenor should choose what they think is right.

  64. Royel

I think that our president and governer do what they do in term of criminals. I think that criminals that are pardoned sould at least have evidence before. If they do not have good enough evidence they should be put in jail. If they do have good evidence I think they should kept watch on them.
When they pardon them they should have a very good reason for doing so because they might let a dangerous criminal out into the world.

    January 13, 2012 at 10:30 am |
  65. mike

i think that only some people should be let off a hook. like if someone kills someone thay should stay in jail. but if someone has unpaid parking tickets.thay should just be fined. only if the accuser has good evidence. the jails are getting filled to the limmits. when thay let them go thay should have a good reason for doing so becouse thay could go and do another crime. and then the courts going to feel bad about them selfs

    January 13, 2012 at 10:30 am |
  66. Brandon

first off, the gonvenor shouldnt have pardoned anyone of such an offense without doing something more strict than to just have them contact officals daily, he could have put some sort of tracking device in/on them to keep their were abouts known, a hidden camera could have been added also so that if they murder someone else there is first person evidence of the action happening

    January 13, 2012 at 10:31 am |
  67. Alyson

I think that a pardon is a good thing because I believe that anyone deserves a second chance. For one thing they might not be guilty. however i think it could be a bad thing because if you just let them go they might go off and begin another crime because they havn't learned their lesson. I guess there are bad things and positive points so i come to the decision i'm really glad that i am not or won't be a govener or a president. So i'm going to say that i think if their on death row i believe they should be pardoned. Serving time in jail is temporary but death lasts forever. What if they didn't comit the crime? And wat if it's affecting the children of america? Its teaching them them the wrong thing and teaching them that the rule our parents taught us, "Dont stoop to their level", is so not true.

    January 13, 2012 at 10:34 am |
  68. Shea

Pardons are sometimes a good thing, but they can be a bad thing also. The president needs to think about what crime this person commited, and the behavior this criminal has had in prison. If they murdered someone they probably shouldn't get out. If they did a less severe crime then they probably deserve a second chance.

    January 13, 2012 at 10:36 am |
  69. DeAnna

I believe that everyone deserves a second chance, even if they did murder somebody . Prison is for changing people not for punishing them. So I think its good to pardon people. Some major factors that President Barack Obama should consider are , maybe they're not ready to be outside of prison , or their bad behavior might be something to consider.

    January 13, 2012 at 10:38 am |
  70. Keyden

I think that Obama can pardon people, but it depends on the crime. For example someone was a murderer and killed five people I don't think they should be able to get out, but if they robbed a bank they could get out.Not for a crime that took another life.

    January 13, 2012 at 10:40 am |
  71. Carsey

I think that prison has different effects on different people. Sometimes prison can make people more violent by the environment they are in. They should do some more reasearch on the people they let out, by how prison changed them. And, sertainly never let out a serial killer.

  72. Poky High Gov. Class

We think that the governor of the state should consider the criminals record, their likelihood to commit another crime, and if the crime committed was premeditated. Carl ROCKS!

I believe that if the criminal is guilty, they should not get a pardon. They have committed a crime, and they should not be able to be let off the hook when they've done something wrong.

    January 13, 2012 at 11:22 am |

The president or "pardoner" needs to take into thought that maybe that person has done something very bad and needs to stay in jail. They need to find out excactly what they have done and by this then make their desision. ...............
Dont be irrisponsible and let crazed wacko people go free. and dont expect them to call you to check in, they won't do that in a million years. They have their own agenda to fullfill. Thoe people are there for a reason, respect that.

    January 13, 2012 at 11:23 am |
  76. Hanna

I don't think any criminal should have a pardon for anything at any time. They had their chance but they blew it. They need to know that what they did is against the law.
A president or governor shouldn't consider s pardon because the criminal broke the law. We have rules for a reason. We're meant to follow those rules unless told otherwise. Criminals think those rules don't apply to them so I don't think they deserve a pardon.

    January 13, 2012 at 11:23 am |
  77. Madison

I don' t think any criminals such as murderers or kidnappers should be pardoned. Even if they say they've "changed", chances are, they probably haven't. Once they get free, they'll just go back to what they were doing before. Prison is meant to hold criminals away from other people to keep us safe, so why let them go?
While lots of people say, "Everybody deserves a second chance," some people don't. These criminals did something seriously wrong and they can't think right, so they're a danger to everyone. If we pardon any criminals, no matter what they did or how long they've been in prison, they're going to break the law again. They were given laws and rules and they broke them, so they need to have their punishment, not a reward.

They should consider how serious the crime is first. If the crime is to serious, they should stay in jail. If it is a minor crime I can see them taking them of the hook. I do not think that murderers should get out of jail scott free.
The president is the one who has all of the tough decisions. The people that have minor crimes should be able to get another chance. If they do it again then they should go right back to prison. The murderers that got out should be put back in prison for life.

I dont think they should of been let out.I think they should stayed in jail. They are a thret to sociaty. They could group up together.

They could buy wepon's.They could murder more people. They should be found. They should be sent back to jail.

I think that they should only give pardons to people who haven't committed something as serious as murder; such as stealing.

    January 13, 2012 at 11:26 am |

I don't think that some crimals should be pardoned due to the seriousness of the crime they commited. There is a reason for them being in jail, and that was for doing the wrong thing. Chances are if they do it once, they will do it again as soon as they are let off the hook.
Its a great risk to let these criminals loose, and if they are they should be kept under close watch. Pardoning should be given to the criminals with less crime records, than those with higher records. This situation should be looked over more before they let it happen because it could cause more danger than we need.

I think if you pardon a criminal he might just go out and do the same thing he did again. Once a criminal always a criminal. If we pardon a criminal he should be responsible and respectful instead of causing problems. In prison they should keep track of how many days they go with out trouble and if he reaches a certain amount of days he should be able to get out with a pardon.
I personally think its a dumb idea for them to let criminals out putting the citizens of United States of America in danger.

I think that a pardon could be ok in some situations but if it is a really bad crime like murder,a pardon shouldnt be ok.

I think that everyone should have a second chance depending on what they did. If the crime is serious like murder or rape then they should not be given a pardon. Some people just make mistakes.

  85. Madison

I think they should think about what the crime is that the person committed. If they murdered someone why would you let them go out in the world? Shouldn't they pay the price?

  86. chrystal

i thin k that the pardon criminals is ok depenending on what they didlike if its was a murder or theft then no they shouldnt be able to get a pardon but if it involvers someone buying stuff that was stolen and they didnt now then they should b aloud to get a pardon because it wasnt there fault they hadnt nown it was taken.so depending on what the reason for having to get a pardon is then yes they can get one but now if its for somin awful

    January 13, 2012 at 11:29 am |
  87. ariel

I think that parding criminals should not be aloud because when they skip bail you have criminals on the streets comiting crimes. i guess it would depend on the crime murderers shouldent be aloud out on pardon.

    January 13, 2012 at 11:29 am |
  88. ben

i think that pardons are good and bad at the same time. I think this because theres murders that would be happy to go off and kill again. Also there are arsonists and stuff that would burn stuff. But then there are the people that made one bad choice and the people that made one bad choice, should have a pardon. Not the killers and and people who would do more bad things.
also i think the gov. should stop giving so many pardons out. And for the good people, they should get pardons.

    January 13, 2012 at 11:29 am |

I think that the Government should not give criminals a pardon. They did the crime so they pay the time. Even though time can't give a life back it will give them time to think about what they have done and why they did it.

I think the person in jail that commited a minor crime should be free if he doesn't do any more crimes in his life. A person who killed somebody should be in jail for the rest of their life.
The government and the state should decide on any other minor crimes that some crimnals did. Most of those people should be free and living the rest of their life.

The govenor should ask him self if the criminal might commit another crime. If the person in prison commited murder keep him in prison.
Can the person get a job?Does he have a place to live and family support?

    January 13, 2012 at 11:32 am |
  93. Kianna

I think that when a criminal does a crime they shouldn't be pardoned. They shouldn't be pardoned beacause if they did it one time then the chances are that they will do it again. There is a reason for the criminals too be locked up, and thats cause they did something really serious or for doing the wrong thing.
If the criminals are pardoned they should be watched really carefully so they won't do the same thing or even worse.

    January 13, 2012 at 11:32 am |
  94. Austin

I think that the president should make the person that might have done the crime do there time in jail. They are risking alot. The person that got let off the hook could just go out and do the same crime again
They should just make the criminal do there time. I just think that they should have to do there time or even stay there untell they find out who did the crime.

How bad was the crime, has the person started acting more civilized, has he done good deeds around the jail, has he gotten in any fights, has he ever commited any other crimes, how many crimes has he commited?

  102. Jake

I think that you should take in consideration who you are letting out and what crimes they did so you can decide wisely on who would use the pardon appropriately.

    January 13, 2012 at 11:34 am |

I would think that the governors and such would look at their records and see if they committed hate crimes or murder. But if the prisoner didn't do anything dangerous they should be pardoned but under watch by the law enforcement.

They should take the seriousness of the crime into consideration when giving a pardon. They should also take into consideration whether or not the person has been to jail before.

What they should take into consideration is are they going to d another crime, will they run to a different town, will they not see their patrol officer.

    January 13, 2012 at 11:35 am |
  108. Maggie

i think they should consider what crime they committed when they pardon a criminal. It would be better to pardon someone who stole something than someone who killed someone.

  113. Spencer

Lots of things could go wrong when you pardon a criminal. They could just run off not be heard of again or go back to the life of criminals. The president and governors should take precaution on who they pardon, and what the person did.

    January 13, 2012 at 11:36 am |
  114. James!

Presidents and governors should take in to consideration the person's crime. If a person has been convicted with more serious crimes, pardoning may not be the best option.

    January 13, 2012 at 11:36 am |
  115. Jaret

I think that when considering a pardon, the official in charge should ask a prison warden to monitor the prisoner for a few days to see how he behaves. Then a pardon can be much more easily given out because it'll be easier to tell if the prisoner has repented from his crime and really deserves to be pardoned. If this is done than there wouldn't be any problems about prisoners not checking in.

    January 13, 2012 at 11:36 am |
  116. Gretchen

When a political leader gives someone a pardon they should pay attention to what the crime is. If I were the governor or president, I would not give someone a pardon if they were a murderer because, They could just go and kill more people. I would only give pardons to people who did crimes that aren't to bad.

    January 13, 2012 at 11:37 am |
  117. Cody

Some things they should take into consideration when pardoning are how much evidence they had against the convicted person, the seriousness of the crime, and if they have a history of crime.

    January 13, 2012 at 11:37 am |
  118. Sarah

Before They Pardon A criminal They should Make them do a secret test without the criminals knowing Like they set them free but before they have a taking device attached to there clothes just in case then at the boundary line of the prison they tell them if they have passed or not .

    January 13, 2012 at 11:37 am |
  119. Fez

I think that they should check the persons criminal record before they let them go. And they shouldn't pardon to many criminals because then there would be very bad people on the streets. They would be hurting people and destroying society. The governer should take into consideration all of the serial killers that could continue killing if they are released.

They should set a limit on how many criminals can be released. Because if they go over that limit then ther would be more dangerous people on the streets. We already have enough criminals then their should be. And more people will be getting injured.

    January 13, 2012 at 11:40 am |
  120. Antherton

I think that they shouldn't even consider pardoning criminals from jail because they are in there for a good reason and deserve to be there!!!!

I think the presedent or governor should not pardon with crimanals that have a really bad record. They would most likely try to run. They should consider what the crimanal has done or why they have been convicted with a crime.

    January 13, 2012 at 11:49 am |
  124. Nikko

I think that is stupid because they are criminals and they were committed for murder so they might murder again so they should stay in prison.

    January 13, 2012 at 11:50 am |
  125. Ashley

I don't think that they should do pardons because if you give them something to do and then they don't go to jail they might kill or rob more people and that is not good.

    January 13, 2012 at 11:50 am |
  126. Landen

I think the president or governor should not pardon murders or very infamous people because they most likely will continue murdering or causing theft. I believe that criminals should only be pardoned once and thats if it is a very petty crime. Crimes should never be forgotten but small thefts do not need to be punished severely.

    January 13, 2012 at 11:51 am |
  127. Gerard

I don't think this is right. Prisons should do their time for what they did wrong. They should not be excused or "pardon" from jail when they've murdered, robbed, etc.

    January 13, 2012 at 11:51 am |
  128. Brittany

I think that is wrong to do. Its perfectly unjust.

The president or governor should consider when pardoning a criminal if there going to finish there job they started or refresh and start a new life.

    January 13, 2012 at 11:54 am |
  130. Danae

I think thats a terrible thing to do especially if your a governor or a president. Its not right to have a pardon with someone thats in prison, they have been put in there for a reason and should not be let out until their time is up. Then theres criminals and killers running around your town just because someone couldn't do something yourself.

    January 13, 2012 at 11:56 am |
  131. Nigel

i think they will regret their choice and soon feel guilty of bringing the criminals back to the public. If they wanted their car washed, they can just go to a car wash and pay at least $30.00 for it to get cleaned. If they needed their house fixed up, they can just do it themselves, and stop being so lazy.

    January 13, 2012 at 11:57 am |

I think it is not fair and people should not be let free for the crime they did.

    January 13, 2012 at 12:00 pm |
  133. Justin

They should consider how they could be saving one persons life from a crime they didn't commit.Or they could be ruining another persons life by bringing there nightmares back after they nearly escaped death from the criminal. They really need to have a good reason to pardon the criminal not just that they washed there car or cleaned there house.(Governor Barbour)

    January 13, 2012 at 12:03 pm |
  134. Emily

I think that this is a HORRIBLE idea. The people that got arrested for murders and were sentenced to life-long prison should not get out for cleaning the governors car! They could go and rob someone or kill someone again! Just because you got out of jail doesn't mean they are going to clean up their act and think straight!

    January 13, 2012 at 12:06 pm |
  135. Robert

It could be a good idea but they should put them under watch secretly so others can be safe without worrying that a murderor is left off the hook and he might still be a murderor.

  136. Bailey

i think no its not fair to the people.

    January 13, 2012 at 12:34 pm |
  137. Bailey

I think it depends on the crime and the criminal. Sometimes, it is just an accident. And you can also send them to court if nothing else works out. But you can't just COMPLETELY let them off the hook or "pardon" them without doing anything else.

    January 13, 2012 at 12:35 pm |
  138. Derian

I don't think they should just be let off the hook.
They should get should get some kind of punishment depending on how bad the crime is.

Well if they are convicted of something major then there should be no pardon. If it is something small like a robbery and nobody gets hurt then they should be aloud a pardon.

    January 13, 2012 at 12:35 pm |
  141. Allison

I think they should consider on whether or not that criminal would the same thing again. If that criminal does it again, they may not be able to catch him again.

I think that they should consider what the person went to jail for then think if they would do this thing again. And if its the appropriate time for it to be done. And if its a person who went to jail for murder i wouldnt pardon them because they killed someone and they could do it again. What would be the point of putting them in jail anways if youre just going to pardon them?

    January 13, 2012 at 12:40 pm |
  146. Elisadora

I think they should look at how responsible and well-behaved they'd been. I think that if convicts follow rules in jail, behave, and generally know that what they've done is wrong, they should be forgiven, but if someone doesn't follow rules and does not feel remorse for their actions should not be forgiven. Forgiveness is something that must be wanted and earned, but should be given to those that deserve it.

It think that it is important for officials to look at the crimes that a person has committed before he pardons them. Another important aspect would be how much the individual had changed for the better/worse. This will help keep America safe, while giving people a second chance.

    January 13, 2012 at 12:49 pm |
  152. johanna

prisoners should not be pardoned at all, the prisoners did the action that got them into jail, and must pay the consequence for it. that's like excusing someone who violated the school rules from detention. It's just not fair

    January 13, 2012 at 1:09 pm |
  153. Nick

I think that any governed or president should look at person's judicial case that they are pardoning, to see how bad the crime was. If it's terrible to the person that is judging them, that person should stay in prison. But if it is not bad and it is a petty crime, the person should be put on probation.

    January 13, 2012 at 1:59 pm |
  156. Brittany

A president or governor should consider a few things when pardoning a criminal.
First off, considering the extent of the crime. If a prisoner has killed 5 people and rapped two should he get a pardon over someone who has set a house on fire.
Secondly, what is the odds that this person is going to do it again? People that are more likely to repeat their crime should not have their crimes pardoned. If most likely they won't repeat the crime then maybe giving them a pardon wouldn't be a bad thing.
Thidly, while that person was serving their time, did they cause a lot of trouble? If a person is bad in prison then most likely they aren't going to do very well in the real world, pardon's shouldn't even be considered for these people.
Finally, how many times has that person been in jail/prison? if it was their first or second time then, yeah, maybe a pardon should be considered.
Most people should have second chances, but some people don't deserve one. Our president and mayors should take the rest of America's safety and well-being into consideration!

I think that they should look at the crime that the criminal committed. If it was a murderer, and they were sentenced a life sentence, they should have to finish it because doing work around a house should not mean that they should get pardoned.

I think it would be wrong to pardon anyone that is being considered guilty because if they are, there would be a good chance that they will just go back out and do it over and over again. Then if they got caught again, they could use the same story to be pardoned and go back to what they were doing earlier.

I don't like that because the people are killers and the Governor let them go cause they washed his car.? There just going to go out there and kill more. They were sent to life and they let them go when they have been there a week. Thats really going to make them learn what they did...

A criminal should not be given a pardoning because they decide to kill somebody and they should pay for it. In so many words there telling us that if we kill somebody we are going to be forgiven. Pardoning a criminal also brings danger because they might kill people again think they are going to be forgiving right away.

I don't understand why this would happen. If someone has killed people then why would you let them of the hook? Its like letting a hungry lion out in the zoo where everybody is a threat. I just don't understand

  177. Colin

When pardoning someone the government must consider what the convict did especially if it was murder. They have to think about what would happen if they were left out for the rest of their life also since their criminal record is erased know one else will know what the convict did.The government probably shouldn't have let the criminal out of prison in the first place.

I think that is a very bad idea because people getting let out of jail for murder and crimes should not be let out of jail because they killed a person,or hurt a child,or caused a family to be homeless because of there bad decision. I think that they should not be let off the hook because they hurt people and that is not humane.

    January 13, 2012 at 2:07 pm |
  180. Aaron

They shouldn't let them out because they are still going to be criminals and murder and all kinds of things.

    January 13, 2012 at 2:09 pm |
  181. danielle

i think that the murderers shouldn't have been released because they could still murder without knowing. So everyone is endangered because they could be anywhere at anytime. they should still be in prison for murder. well i think it is very wrong.

    January 13, 2012 at 2:12 pm |
  182. hannah

I don't think they should do that because what if they start to kill again? Then they would go back in prison.

  183. Jaclyn

I think a President should take into consideration, that these people did bad things. Things that are against the law. They have hurt people and families, and the President is just letting them off the hook.

    January 13, 2012 at 2:54 pm |
  184. Kalee

Well I think presidents should take into consideration that these criminals did things that were against the law. They were sent to jail to serve their punishment and they should not be aloud to just be let off the hook.

    January 13, 2012 at 2:56 pm |
  185. Victoria

I don't think they should forgive the crime because if they committed a murder or two they might (most likely) do it again. So when that happens they'll just end up in the same spot they were in. Either way they'll be in prison or court so might as well keep them there first.

    January 13, 2012 at 2:56 pm |
  186. bronson

I think it is ok to give pardons as long as they have certain limits they should be able to get out of jail {depending on what they did} as long as they do not commit another crime they should not go to jail if they do there original sentence should be triple the time in jail after getting a second chance.

    January 13, 2012 at 2:57 pm |

I think that all people that go to jail should stay in jail

I think the governor should reconsider letting these criminals loose. If they committed murder, there's no telling about what could go wrong.

I think if they did something bad they should not get a pardon and i think they should stay in jail i think the Governor did bad.

    January 13, 2012 at 3:01 pm |
  194. sarah

I think that it was a bad idea......Before they pardon a criminal they should make to a secret test without the criminals knowing like they set them free but before they have a talking and tracking device attached to them on the back of the there neck just in case..... then at the boundary line of the prison they tell them if they had passed or not.

    January 13, 2012 at 3:01 pm |

I think the criminals should stay in jail.

Ok....so if you are convicted of a crime why are you let off the hook?? I mean Carl how would you feel if a cerial killer is arrested and then he moved into your community?? I know it would make me feel unsafe....that is what I think about the Pardon.

    January 13, 2012 at 3:13 pm |

I don't think they should be set free i think they should serve their time.

    January 13, 2012 at 3:14 pm |

They should serve there time. Have you ever heard the saying "Do the crime, you do the time" They should be able to get jobs when they get out. They shouldn't run away. That's not good.

    January 13, 2012 at 3:15 pm |
  199. Adriana

I think that criminals should not be pardoned. If they did something wrong, they should have to get punished. The criminal should at least get a fine. They shouldnt just be let off the hook. Its not fair to the rest of the people in jail, that did a less crime then them, and the people that have to live near or by them. They might feel intimadated.

    January 13, 2012 at 3:29 pm |
  200. Maria

People who get away with things is not all that good beacuse it could happen again and for what should they gat away with it again the answer is no.
My opion is that they should stay in jail for a really long time to do all the time.Peolple should know that there are all kinds of people around and that they should not be forgiven because if they did not mean it they would of not done it in the first place.

    January 13, 2012 at 3:30 pm |
  201. Evelyn

the president or governors should think about the crimes that the person did and if he/she deserves it. some people would take advantage of that. they should think about the consequences before they decide to pardon someone. if they murdered someone or if they tried to murder someone they should not get a pardon but if it was stealing or something similar then they should. they should also think about it if they decide to pardon someone.
they should throughly think it through instead of just deciding to give them a pardon. they should analize thier behavior.

    January 13, 2012 at 3:34 pm |
  202. Raeann

The president and govener shouldn't let people off the hook if they murdered someone or anything because it's not fair to the victim's family. Criminals are responsable for their own actions and deserve some punishment that severe. In this lifetime, people go to jail or get sentenced because of that. I think they should at least give them a lengthful jail time period to let them over think what they've done and what their actions caused.

    January 13, 2012 at 3:34 pm |
  203. Cassie

The president should consider pardons by what the crime is like if its some thing big they shouldnt have a pardon because its well a big thing. If they have done soemthing big they should know that it comes with a price. But if its something small they should get a pardon because its not that big but before the pardon theys hould have consequences.
But if the person has a background of being in jail before they shouldnt have a pardon. If they hvent been in jail before and its big they should have a pardon because it gives a chance and everyone deserves a second chance.

    January 13, 2012 at 3:34 pm |
  204. Suziee

I think when the president or govoner when pardoning a criminal they should consider house arrest. I also think that there shoulod be no pardonin gin the United States because, we are letting dangerous criminals out into the communities before they ended their full term in jail that they were assinged for comitting crimes. I also belive for minor things a pardon would be okay with some house arrrest or probation. But for the criminals who murder people they should have to stay full term in jail with no pardons or bails.

    January 13, 2012 at 3:35 pm |
  205. Riley

I think if its like a minor offence they should forget about it. But something like letting murders go is like not cool. IIts sad that they let them go. Theres no justice for the family of the victims.

And also its unfair to do that because all the innocent peoples have to sit in jail while the bad peoples get to go free. I dont think all that stuff is fair.

    January 13, 2012 at 3:36 pm |
  206. Josh

I think that to be pardoned. You have to have a less crime conviction than Murder. I think that the governer should be watched by a government official of justice to see if the pardon should be allowed on the person being pardon.
Also I think that the Federal Government should put a law on how much pardons an official can have.

    January 13, 2012 at 3:36 pm |
  207. April

They should make sure that they check the back round on the one who was charged with a crime. If they were charged with murder or bank robbery they should never get a pardon. They should finish out with their term in jail. If they give a pardon to a criminal who did some of those crimes then some of them might do it again.
If they went to jail and didn't commit the crime they should be offerd a second chance. They should make sure that the person will not commit another crime or the same one over again.

    January 13, 2012 at 3:36 pm |
  208. byron

the criminal should just stay in prisin cause theres a reason there in there for the first place. so if the president lets them out then they would most likly go back to what they were doing that got them in prisin in the first place. and its better not to take the chance of accidentily letting go a killer or raper. plus just because the people test prisiners for early realease the could just be faking it till they get out.

    January 13, 2012 at 3:37 pm |
  209. Ramon

I think the governor or president should check that the criminal is not likely to do a new crime.

    January 13, 2012 at 3:39 pm |
  210. Justin

the president, should give the criminal a pardon if they have a minor offence or has served a year in prision. If the prisnor has been given a pardon a tracking device should be put around his ankel for the remainder of his sentance that he had been given, and a mandatory drug test if that is what they had been in prision for. They cops should be able to search their house 24/7.

    January 13, 2012 at 3:40 pm |
  211. josh

i don't think they should give pardon to criminals they are most likely to run away. And so that that would be safer for the community.
And safer for all the states.

    January 13, 2012 at 3:40 pm |
  212. Priscilla

The president or the governor should forgive or let off the hook for something they did. I think someone for murdering someone should be in prson for a long time for what they did nd their actions.

    January 13, 2012 at 3:40 pm |
  213. Tyler

I think the president should never pardon a person that is convicted of a crime. If they were convicted of a crime they were obviously there for a reason. If I was president I dont think I would pardon anyone unless I absolutely new they were innocent even then id still have to think about it.

    January 13, 2012 at 3:41 pm |
  214. Kaitlyn

My thoughts on what a president or govenor should consider when pardoning a criminal is that they shouldn't do pardon, because the person who did the crime might of done something really bad and they should be punished of whatever they did.
And if the peson might have kidnapped a child they shouldn't get let off the hook because the child was probably scared that the person was going to murder her/him.

    January 13, 2012 at 3:42 pm |
  215. Austin

They should make sure the person pardoned will not commit a new crime . And they should make sure the person who did the crime was punished.

    January 13, 2012 at 3:44 pm |
  216. Raemona

I think people who commites a crime should be locked up, because if they are let go they might do it again. Also if the person gets a slap on the wrist and is let go then it is going to be a big problem. Also they just let 1 more criminal free in the world.
So if that happens again the people should think twice before letting someone loose.

    January 13, 2012 at 3:45 pm |
  217. Weston

I think that some of the people should be let off the hook. Like the people who have minor crimes such as the people who get arrested for stupid things. The governor should not take all the blame . but I think he should do something. Also the people should do do something by help the people by helping The children with school or by teaching them the right thing.

i think that it's not fair because the person that they are letting go did something against the law. I feel that they aren't going to learn that what they are doing is wrong if they are not punished. That scares me to know that someone who did a crime is getting away when they could of hurt somebody.

I personally think that it's the wrong thing to do president or state governor. That is just putting peoples life on the risk. How do you know if they've changed or not?Think about all of the kids that walk home from school by their self with no adult around and what if one of those "prisoners" come up to them and do something bad to them, then what?Back to prison one day then out the next?

    January 13, 2012 at 3:58 pm |

    January 13, 2012 at 3:58 pm |
  229. miya

I think its important that if people killed or harmed some one they should stay in jail but others that did nothing that bad should stay there for awhile just to think of what they did and how they can change that part of there lifes.....

  230. Jade,

PARDON; I think that if its not that bad then they can be pardoned. But, if it's that bad then they shouldn't be pardoned. Like killing someone or something. But, yeah I think it depends what they have done or did.

I don't think any criminal should be pardoned by any president or governor.

    January 13, 2012 at 4:26 pm |
  240. Haley

If they have convicted a crime, multiple murders, or have been proven of murder and admit to it, they shouldn't be let free. If they committed a crime because of a mental illness, they should be put under surveillance with medication for a while so you know if they will do something again. If it was an accident, which in most cases it isn't, they should have the chance of a pardon.

    January 13, 2012 at 4:26 pm |
  241. Kevin

Our leaders when pardoning should consider whether or not the criminal is truly a detriment to society. If a president is going to pardon a criminal, they need to be absolutely certain that the person will not commit more crimes. The president or governor should only be able to pardon someone who can help, stop, or prevent other crimes from happening.

    January 13, 2012 at 4:27 pm |
  242. chance

I think it is 50/50, because there are people in our world who have been convicted of a crime, and had done nothing. There are also people who commit a crime, and are so bad that they shouldn't be forgiven.

    January 13, 2012 at 4:28 pm |
  243. Austin

I understand the governor wanting to give pardons to people, but don't give pardons to murderers that are still in prison unless, they have extremely strong evidence that they are not guilty.

    January 13, 2012 at 4:31 pm |
  244. Tala

The president and the governer should look up the history of the criminal and based on that they should see if he is worthy to be let go because most of the criminals today are likely to strike again

    January 13, 2012 at 5:16 pm |
  245. Kevin

A criminal shouldn't be pardoned for such a harrowing crime. Criminals shouldn't be let go since they've done crimes. The mere thought of having a feral criminal to wonder around resident's domiciles is too much to bear. This would leave many in a despondent nature and makes them taciturn.

    January 13, 2012 at 5:24 pm |
  246. Samuel

I think that they should consider how bad the crime was. If somebody set off a bomb while being drunk then there should be some second thought. But if it was something like trespassing private property then they deserve a second chance.

    January 13, 2012 at 5:27 pm |
  247. Nat

I think they should consider if it was their first offense, how they act in jail (respectful or not towards authorities), and what the crime was. Stealing (in my opinion) is a more forgivable crime than murdering someone (even though they are both bad). They could also try to find out, if possible, why the person did what they did (a stupid decision, or plotting for months to kill their ex because he/she got a good settlement).

    January 13, 2012 at 5:48 pm |
  248. Wyatt

I think they should consider how severe of a crime the person committed and what the person has been notorious for in the past. That way they know if they are likely to commit another crime.

    January 13, 2012 at 6:36 pm |
  249. Avery

I think that the government should consider how they are going to treat people wen out of jail. They might think this is an opportunity to do more bad crimes. Don't they think that they will keep on doing bad things because if they go to jail again, then they know that they might get let out again. Besides, if other criminals see other people getting loose than they are going to want to escape and eventually their will be man hunts all around the place!

    In my country, south Korea.
There are a few people who is given pardon.
And most of the prisoner who is given a pardon are model prisoner.

In my opinion, governor should consider whether the prisoner regrets one's wrongdoings or not and observe one's behavior carfully before give pardon. But murderer sould not be given pardon because there is no conviction that he or her will not make the same mistake which will make citiziens terrified and.I think. the crime that kill other people cannot be forgiven.

    January 13, 2012 at 7:14 pm |
  251. Melinda

I dont think that criminals should get off the hook for doing horrible things, It gets the country more in danger when having these criminals let out for doing things like murder and bank robbing.

    January 13, 2012 at 7:45 pm |
  252. Caeli

I think that it depends on what the criminal did. If the criminal murdered someone, robbed a bank, or soemthing serious like that, they need to stay in jail for the safety of the country. If the criminal did something small like shoplifting a small object then a pardon should be considered – not necesarrily alowed.

  253. tracy

i honestly think if you did the crime you got to do the time, no matter if you learned your lesson when i get grounded i dont get off the hook for being good! and if you do let people off the hook they will be tempted to do more bad things

    January 13, 2012 at 8:42 pm |

I think we should not use "pardon" because if the criminals have a second chance, they would take advantages to the second chance and make the society worse.

When considering a pardon, one must always look at the person and their complex. When someone takes on the daunting task of deciphering one's complex or mentality, one needs to watch out for how they act. In jail, the person may be the paragon of all the inmates. Releasing them may bring forth an unknown personality not shown while in prison. Aside from the personality, president's and governors must also take the prisoner's criminal record and school records into consideration. Clearly, there numerous other things to look out for when releasing a criminal.

    January 13, 2012 at 11:54 pm |
  258. Samantha

When pardoring a criminal the judge should think about what the person was put in jail for and whether or not he would be good for the community. They should also consider how trustworthy the person is and how sincere they are.

For a president it is a sign of giving a person that has done wrong another chance. For people of government and people effected in what ever the crime was it is a terrible moment. Of Course, this sometimes causes problems for the country or state. What presidents or state officials should consider is what are the affects are when criminals are freed. Having enough trust in them is one thing, but just reading about them in this letter to pardon is another. Also people who have a load of anxiety with this, have to sedate them selves for this. Thus, we all have to think of the chance they are having.

    January 14, 2012 at 12:15 pm |

  263. Keerthika

Before pardoning a criminal, the president or the governor should ratiocinate about the pros and cons of letting the criminal "off the hook". Realizing if the cons are more voluminous than the pros or vice versa, they should then make the decision whether or not to pardon the criminal. The president or the governor, should also muster background information about the specific criminal they are planing to pardon. Doing so, the president or governor may understand the characteristics of the criminal better knowing if the criminal is trustworthy enough to let go.By considering these few points, the president or governor wont regret their choice of pardoning the criminal or not. Therefore, the president or governor should ponder the pros is bigger than the cons or vice versa and get to know the criminal better understanding what type of person they are dealing with.

    January 14, 2012 at 2:37 pm |
  264. Anna

They should not consider pardoning a criminal, because who knows what they might do when they are? There's a good chance they might commit crime again.

  265. Ali

I personally don’t think a president or governor should be allowed to pardon a criminal. I think that if a person is convicted of a crime that they should have to pay the price for the crime they commit amount and not be forgiven. The President shouldn’t be able to use his/her power to forgive someone and allow them to not go to jail or to let them be released from the rest of their criminal sentences because when someone does something wrong they have to take responsibility for it and suffer the consequences. Criminals should have to stay in jail for the length of time that a judge and jury decide. Everyone has their own opinions.

I believe that the government should give everyone a fair trial. All people should be treated like humans but we do need to take inaccount the seriousness of the persons crime.

    January 14, 2012 at 8:48 pm |
  267. Kenny

No, they should never pardon criminals for their wrong doings. It was illegal and to let them off the hook could mean to them repeating their crime and maybe getting away with it. Our founding fathers wanted to hang King George the Third for taxing them. A murder or robbery is much more serious and should result in years of jail time or probation. If America will let murderers, robbers, and various other types of criminals get away with their crime, then why do we send anybody to jail. Less serious crimes such as speeding and running a red light can be pardoned because they didn't make much of an impact.

No, if you do a seirious crime then imagine how many people will do it over and over again because they think it's O.K. My mom always tells me that when I don't listen and get away it, my brother and sister think it's O.K. so they do the same.

Pardoning criminals is an imperative part of the United States, because it allows convicts to redact their lives for the better. However, it's vital to carefully select who is pardoned and who isn't. When considering to pardon a criminal it is crucial to ratiocinate over the fact whether they even qualify. Perusing over what crime(s) that criminal did is also a significant detail. Finally, a president or governor should consider whether or not those convicts will commit more crimes. Undoubtedly, governors and presidents shouldn't be letting murderers and other feral and daunting people cavort around and commence killing other citizens of the United States or other heinous, reprehensible crimes. Thus, it is critical to diligently choose which recalcitrant persons get to make their lives more meritorious.

When pardoning a criminal, the president must be aware of the crime of course and shpuld knoww exactly what happened. in some cases, criminals are reprehensible, and the presidesnt or governor must know what he is getting into. Ratiocinating about this, criminals should not be pardoned because they were obviously sent to jail or prison for a reason. When pardoning a criminal every little detail must be kept in mind. its a very tricky decision but if one feels that the criminal got in jail for the wrong reason, that is understandable. Obviously, there is much to onsider before pardoning a criminal.

What I think the government should do if they forgive a criminal if they don’t do what they didn’t mean. For example if they murdered for no reason then they will be in jail for a long period of their life and they might get the electric chair if they don’t admit to that a criminal did it. The government should take full responsibility they should send the criminal in jail and they should let the criminal stay there all longs as he needs if they criminal did a really terrible thing like kill somebody for no reason they the criminal should be in jail for life.

In my opinion, when pardoning a criminal, a president or governor should consider the crime committed, the time done in jail or prison, and what the criminal has done to rectify the crime. It would help a criminal to be pardoned if they were to do something such has, further their education or organize a community group to right their wrongs. If the crime was victimless, such as tax evasion, then it is not that big of a deal, but if the crime involved a victim, like assault or murder, it’s what the victim’s, or the victim’s family’s, feelings are about the pardon. It just depends on the crime committed and the view of the situation.

Understandably, the president cannot enter the room or start of by thinking the defendant is guilty. It is important to enter thinking the defendant is not guilty because that could cause the president or governor's (p/g's) final decision to be biased, and daft. Amazingly, even if all the evidence points to the conclusion that the defendant is guilty, the p/g has to try to be clairvoyant and keep an even mind. Also, the p/g has to treat the man evenly, even due to their race, or their background, and the reason that they are getting tried for. Clearly, it is important for the p/g to be be an even minded individual.

I think criminals should make a list of the promise that he or she won't make any crime out of prison, if they are pardoned. And they should be done with another list, which is writing their plans or something good to do if they go out. Governer should read that, and pardon the criminals who wrote it properly.

In many court trials, criminals get pardoned, or let off the hook. However, this is not always a meritorious idea. Presidents and governors should ratiocinate about what to do before letting criminals do. During the meeting, they should go over everything the criminal has done and see what evidence they have against them. Also, the should consider what the criminal did and why they did it. If the evidence is too good to contradict, the criminals should not be let go. In many matters, the criminal might be innocent, but if he or she is not, then that will cause many issues. Therefore, the president and governors should go over many things before pardoning a criminal.

I don’t think it’s right or fair. All criminals should have to do the time for whatever crime they did whether it’s big or small. Then they think they can just go do it again or even do worse. They won’t learn anything. They should get a fair sentence like anyone else who is punished for their wrong doings. Why give people a free ride to hurt people or commit hurtful crimes? Don’t we want a safe and fair world then you shouldn’t applaud or reward them. Give them what they deserve like everyone else.

I think that pardons are stupid. Obviously those people did something wrong to be convicted of a crime. The President and governors can’t just let people go without reasonable explanation. If they have real proof that a person did not commit that crime, then they can be pardoned. It isn’t safe to pardon criminals if there is not solid proof that they did not commit the crime. The President and governors should look at all of the proof and the persons past record and see if they had any other criminal charges. Some people do deserve pardons, but only if they absolutely didn’t commit that crime. The President and governors need to keep us safe.

I think that when a president or governor is going to pardon someone they should take in to consideration what their offence(s) are. They shouldn’t be pardoning someone who is in jail for rape or murder. That just puts them back into society for the chance to do it again. They could be a case where the person was wrongly convicted of the crime. That would be a time to pardon someone. I would also give a pardon to a person that was showing great behavior and was really looking forward to being released so they could start their new lives and better themselves. You would also have to be able to trust the person to know if they would continually check in like they are supposed to. In all honesty, pardoning someone from jail/prison just all together makes me a little nervous.

I think people should only pardon criminals when they are going to make the criminal do good deeds. I also think pardoning should only happen when the criminals are going to be let out in a couple days so it will be easy for them to get a job. I think that because if you have a criminal in prison then they did something bad and need to serve their time for the crime they did.

I think that they should consider if they have been good in jail. People often say if they do something now they are likely to do it in the future or something like it. If a criminal is in jail more than once then they should not be let out. Again, behavior is a huge key to be getting a pardon.

A president or governor should think about what the criminal has done. If it was a really horrible thing, they should not trust him/ her. It is vital when a governor or the president decides to pardon a criminal. In one's mind, the governor or president should ratiocinate about their decision. As time goes by, later in life they should not abhor their choice, but be proud of it. Pardoning a criminal, the criminal should be forgiven because they know they are wrong. Simply, the accused will try to make up for their wronging and better up their life. The decider of the person should recall the person's past and see if they are deserving of a second chance. Therefore, there are many decisions to whether or not the higher person should pardon a criminal.

There are many things you should consider when it comes to pardoning a convict, or in this case convicts, including what that person might of done to get him or her into this position of conviction. I'm not sure what was goin through Governor Barbour's head when he pardoned over 200 convicted criminals, 17 of which were convicted of murder, which included cases of brutal murder. To me, there is no justification for releasing hardened criminals and murderers back onto the streets, even if daily check-in is mandatory that doesnt ensure that they will all show up, which is exactly what happened in this case.

When a president or governor is considering pardoning a criminal they should be considering a number of things. One of them being how serious is the crime that the criminal is in jail for? If they are in jail for something minor than yes I believe its ok for them to be pardoned. If the person that is in jail committed murder or attempted murder, kidnapping or sexual assault then there is no way I believe that they should be pardoned. Pardons are usually issued to people that the president and governor formally know of from past experiences with them.

When that governor pardoned those 200 criminals, all I could say is why? Why pardon convicted criminals? Why reward people for doing wrong? It makes no sense what so ever. Personally I think Uncle Sam should have that governor’s job. He should not have the power to be able to do that, no way, no shape, and no form. I personally don’t think the President should be a loud to pardon anyone he wants to pardon. What’s the United States coming too? I think something needs to be changed since that happened. Laws or whatever needs to be changed.

The President or Governor should look at each case before just releasing a big group of criminals. They should look at what was the crime, have they had good behavior, and how long they have been in custody. Some of those criminals are obviously really guilty if they took off as soon as they were released. Plus it sends a bad message of even if you are convicted, you don't always have to pay the full penalty.

i think that when any authorized person is pardoning criminals, they should revise the situation, and consider what crimes were done. i also think that one single person, like Governor Barbour, should not be in charge of that, but instead a vote should be taken. our founding fathers built this country under leadership and resonsibility, and it is the responsibility of our leaders to keep our streets clean of violence and detruction by all means.

    January 16, 2012 at 6:28 pm |

i think that some governors and presidents are right when they pardon criminals. it is sometimes needed to pardon criminals because of the limitted space in prisons, and becaue of the extent of the crime committed. if the criminal is truly sorry and did not commit a major crime, i feel that it is alright to pardon them.

When a Governer or President is determining a Pardon..they should take in consideration what the criminal has done, look at their whole criminal record. If the criminal has been convicted or anything like attempted murder or actual murder, or anything of such sort, they should not be granted a pardon. What if they haven't changed? What if they might do something like that again? It would be putting the citizens at risk...

Pardoning a criminal can sometimes be a good thing. However, the current population of prison's are growing by the day especially because some Americans have resorted to crimes to get paid. Letting a criminal go would depend on the severity of the crime. For example, a psychopath who has committed first degree murder definitely deserves to go to jail compared to a jaywalker. Also, why are prisoners getting T.V's and training equipment while the children in public schools get derelict books that have been used for six years? Clearly, the U.S needs to ratiocinate and reevaluate their priorities.

During the course of a daunting crime, criminals should not be pardoned by the president or state govenors. Although the crime may not be as severe and reprehensible as others, it would give a gate way of unfairness to other criminals. Quickly, Other criminals would start considering their crimes less abject. Unfortunately, this would cause a disturbance in the court system. After a criminal is pardoned, it would cause chaos due to them not being properly repremanded. Therefore, the president nor state governors should be allowed to pardon crimes or criminals.

    January 16, 2012 at 9:00 pm |
  306. Natalie

When governors or presidents ratiocinate pardoning criminals they must consider why that person deserves it. Knowing why the choice is cogent should tell why a governor or president should do it. Generally, they should ask them self why do they deserve a second chance. Still with pardons they would think about the crime committed, the time done in jail, and what the criminal has done to compensate for the crime. For example, when a criminal turns a new leaf and the governor or president notices and decides they deserve a pardon. Clearly, presidents or governors should consider many things before deciding they should pardon a criminal.

When pardoning a criminal, the president or governor, needs to peruse if this person is responsible enough. Can this person not commit another crime? Also, someone might have a higher chance of being pardoned. An example would be if one had used illegal drugs and another killing a person. The drug abuser would probably have a higher chance of being pardoned. Pardoning should be done for crimes with fewer penalties. Therefore, governors and presidents need to be very cogent when they pardon a person.

After perusing the blog question, a president or governor should ratiocinate about many things before pardoning a criminal. Sometimes if a criminal is pardoned, there may be consequences. Before pardoning someone, a president or governor should first think of the outcome and consequences that will happen if the criminal is pardoned. For example, if a criminal is pardoned but does not learn from their mistakes, they could cause more feral things to happen. Also, if someone is pardoned but most citizens think that they shouldn't be, they may start protesting and that could cause serious problems. Thus, a president or governor should consider consequences before pardoning a criminal.

I think the governer should look at what kind of crime they commited before giving them a pardon. I someone commited a murder, our any other very serious crime I don't want them being able to be back on the streets and possibly hurt or do something to some more people.

In my opinion, a pardon gives governers and presidents an exorbitant amount of power. When someone has the power to release another from prison then that truly is the case. On one hand, a pardon could be meritorious because it gives a prisoner a second chance. On the other hand, it could be a dangerous, and non-diligent suggestion to release a possibly deadly convict.Definitely, a background check is needed before this is done. Clearly, a pardon should only be used if a prisoner is needed in an emergency.

Pardoning a crimal is a very tough decision to make, things such as if the individual will do something like this again need to be thought about diligently. When pardoning a crimal state governors or presidents should think about the welfare and opinions of other citizens. Placing other citizens life in danger is a risk of pardoning a criminal. For example it might make many citizens afraid to do daily activities because there may be criminals living amongst them. Crimnals should not be pardoned as this cliche renders"you do the crime, you do the time". suggesting that if someone does something wrong they need to face their consequences, many other peopl may feel this way too. Clearly, state governors should not pardon criminals!

Pardoning a criminal may seem silly and daft, however, there are many things to be considered. Frankly, one of the things that need to be reviewed is the severity of the crime. Committing a petty crime is reprehensible, but does not hold the same weight of a person perpetrating the act of murder or other serious crimes. The only people who should be let out are the ones who are not a threat to society. Obviously, it would not be alright if a dangerous person was pardoned.

    January 17, 2012 at 12:33 am |

A governor or president should first ratiocinate what the criminal did. Doing something completely terrible could never deserve a pardon. However, even if the crime wasn't so terrible, pardons shouldn't be allowed. Needing to learn their lesson, if criminals do the crime, they need to pay the time. One may abhor and regret the decision to "let them off easy" when the criminals start doing more crimes and hurting more people, in some cases. Clearly, only rarely should a criminal be pardon.

When a president or governor is considering to pardon a criminal, they really need to analyze the situation. If the situation seems kind of insignificant or the criminal has a clean record, then I think pardoing them is a way of warning them for their future endeavors. However, some presidents or governors may biased, so criminals will take advantage of that and try to get away with murder... literally. As stated, pardoning is a very risky thing to do, especially when dealing with people who have a reputation of involving themselves in bad crimes, but if the situation seems right and the president or governor isn't biased, then it is definitely a conceivable concept.

After perusing your newsletter, presidents should not pardon a criminal. In most conditions a criminal has done something recalcitrant and should not be given a "free pass". In order to learn from your mistake you must be punished and taught a lesson. Thus it is not fair. Also your country will become feral and untamed. In jail, some criminals are hardcore criminals. Committing crimes all their life from gigantic to miniscule these types of criminals should not be pardoned because they are most likely commit crimes again. Pardoning hardcore criminals sends a message to those who have committed crimes and those who are thinking of committing crimes. This message is that there are not responsible for their actions and will not have to face severe consequences for their actions. Other criminals such as those who commit petty crimes may be pardoned if they are sorry and pay back to those who they have committed a crime against. Undeniably, the Presidents or Governors should think carefully before pardoning a criminal

I think it is ridiculous to pardon criminals. I mean, they're CRIMINALS. We don't want murderers and robbers running around the place! I know it's trying to stop prison overcrowding, but seriously. Just build more prisons, not let dangerous people go. No matter what the crime, it's been proven that most people who are in jail get right back into jail from doing the same sort of crime when pardoned. People that are supposed to be in jail for life for murder are being let go? Do you think that will make the family or friends of the ones who were killed happy? It is incredibly unfair to those who worked hard in court, testifying, having to deal with the sadness and loss of a crime someone else has committed, then learning that person is going to be let out of jail when they needed to be punished. Releasing criminals that were condemned to life in jail, or maybe ones that sentence will be up soon just rewards them. Then they might start to believe that the law has gone soft and they can get out of more crimes, therefore they think they can commit MORE crimes without punishment. It's stupid. They shouldn't pardon anybody.

In deciding if a criminal should be pardoned or not, people should first make sure the crime is really that low and not very important. But after that, they must think about how the criminal will think after he gets away with the crime. The criminal could get the impression that he can go and do the crime again and get away with it ... again. This could result in more damage and trouble for the criminal as well as the authorities. This should be taken into consideration when deciding if a criminal should be pardoned or not.

i think the risk of pardon criminals is bad because its not good to have killers on the street. because thats only making it wrost for the people of our streets.and if you release criminals who has life sentence is just rewarding them.

If no one votes some canidates could give money to some people and say 'Vote for me.' If that happens this nation is going to have a hard time.

i think when a president pardons a criminal that they look at the criminals record and there behavior in jail

I dont think that they should pardon any criminals because they might not have learned their lesson. I think they need to serve the time they were sentenced.

one thing a president or governor should consider when pardoning a criminal is that the person they are letting go free could have killed people. Do you really want to let a murder loose on the streets? I know for sure that i don't!

    I think that...
1.) The background of the criminal is reviewed and the trial citations are retrieved.
2.) The government should post on their website or something, and have people vote.
3.) They should take the criminal to a facility and have him spend 1 month there, so he will lose the anger, aggression, and recover. Then they should let him out, supervised, but so he could have a test day. 4.)Then after they finish the paperwork, they should release him.
I think that everyone deserves a full life, that their life should not be controlled by others, and even though it is horrible that he ( considering he was convicted of murder) took away that privilege for someone, he should have a second chance.
    Justice...

I think that if a president or governor pardons a criminal they should think about, if the person could end up back in jail or could harm another person, obviously. If leaders are doing this to make it so jails are not so crowded, its wrong. Criminals are in jail or prison for a reason. A criminal can't get a free pass for no reason. Just build more jails, or find something to teach children so they don't grow up to be bad people so you don't have to deal with them when they are older. We need to think ahead.

Officials should first look at the severity of the crime. If they(officials) can not decide a punishment look at the criminal's background. If they have been in prison before then officials should double that punishment. If not, start with a smaller punishment. Although if officials still can't find a "suitable" punishment, stick the criminal in jail for a certain amount of time(as long as the crime fits the punishment) and be done with it.

I think that criminals shouldn't be able to be pardoned they did something wrong and should have to pay for there actions there not 3 anymore they knew what they were doing in the first place and need to be punished.

    January 18, 2012 at 1:06 pm |
  347. Ivan

Officials should check if the crime is severe. If they see that there is no punishment they should look at the criminals background. If the criminals have been in prison the punishment should be more severe. But if they don't have a criminal background the punishment should not be as big.

Pardoning a criminal brings up so many legal, ethical, and moral issues, as well as questions about the purpose and effectiveness of incarceration. There are times I think our country's judicial system puts the rights of the criminals before the rights of the victims (and their families), and I would hate to see this happen when pardons are granted.

    January 18, 2012 at 1:21 pm |
  349. Madison

They should consider what the criminal did. For an example, if the criminal murdered, then the should be sentenced to a longer time in prison. But if they did something like rob a gas station, then they should be sentenced to about 3 years, which is fair.

I feel sorry for the families that have a criminal that lives with them. I think that criminals that have done something bad should be in prison, but not for long depending on what they did.

First off, I hate it when criminals no matter how petty the crime are pardoned. I mean that's just like telling them "Come on over and commit another crime". Hope this doesn't offend anyone, but once a villian, always a villian.

    January 18, 2012 at 2:05 pm |
  354. Angel

You really have to think carefully about doing this kind of thing, if they were to give a murderer a pardon and he/she hasn't changed they're very likely to strike again.

    January 18, 2012 at 2:57 pm |
  355. Tyler

I think the crimes and their punishments shouls co exist(For once). Example: You murder someone, you never get out. You protect yourself and accidentally kill they attacker, then you should get pardoned. That doesn't exist because murderers get out because of guilty pleas, but heroes suffer years of isolasion, pain, not getting to see their families, and when they get out they can't get a job. The system is messed up, terribly.

    I think that.....
that it depends what the crimanal has done and how long he/she has been in jail.

    January 18, 2012 at 3:00 pm |
  357. Solange

I think that if the crime is more severe like murder they should not be pardoned. However, if the crime is less minor and the government feels that the criminal won't cause anymore crime that they should be released.

I think that the government should not pardon criminals for what they have done. The criminalshould face the consequences.

    January 18, 2012 at 3:17 pm |
  360. Christian

I think that jail was made so that people would be punished for their wrong doings and I don't think that they should be pardoned, because the jury and the judge probably have a reason why they gave this criminal an amount of time in jail.

    January 18, 2012 at 3:18 pm |
  361. Ian

I think that people that can be pardoned cant be pardoned by the Governor if they or there family/friends are influential in any way to the Governor and his actions.Like if the Governors son is put in jail i dont think he should be able to pardon him.

    January 18, 2012 at 3:18 pm |
  362. Angelo

I think both sides make sense because it's kind of unfair to be in jail for the rest of your life but also I think it's safer if criminals aren't running around.

    January 18, 2012 at 3:19 pm |
  363. Jackie

They should check the criminal's records to see how many times they've committed a crime. They should also make them have some sort of punishment such as community and service.

    January 18, 2012 at 3:23 pm |
  364. Cailin

The leaders should most of all consider why the person was in prison. If they murdered or tortured someone or some other horrible crime, there is no good reason to let them run around, possibly commiting more crimes.

    January 18, 2012 at 3:27 pm |
  365. Koko

I think it depends on what the person did to get him/her self into jail. If its killing some people then no pardon. But if the person got into jail by doing something forgivable, then maybe pardon him. Overall, i think its whatever the governor or his people wants to do.

How can the president even think about a pardon to criminals. How do you know the criminals are even mature enough to get back on there feet? It will not only be bad to them but discomfert to the citizens.

i dont think that criminals should ever be pardoned because chances are that if you let them go they say that they will be a better person but they probably wont be

  370. Marisa

The smart thing to do would be to not let them out of jail if they were doing someting really bad. If they let them out they might have not changed and do something horrible or bad again!!

    January 18, 2012 at 5:54 pm |
  371. Zigon

I think that in order to get a pardon, they should hold another trial for the accused criminal. A jury should decide whether the person would be a danger to society or not if released. Even so, those people did bad things and deserve to be punished.

    January 18, 2012 at 6:36 pm |
  372. Caeli

I think that it depends on the crime the crminal comitted. If they did something serious, like robbing a bank or murder, they need to stay in jail. If the criminal did something smaller, like shoplifting, it's not really hurting anyone so the pardon should be considered – not necessarily allowed.

    January 18, 2012 at 7:04 pm |
  373. Mags

I personally think that when a governor or president is considering pardoning someone, s/he should first take into account exactly what that person is in prison: a person guilty of a violent and/or sexual crime should not be pardoned under any circumstance because oftentimes these are the kinds of people that can't be trusted, and they also deserve to continue being punished. Secondly, the person's conduct in jail should be considered, as well as their crime frequency and the circumstances under which they committed their crime(s). I think that the ideal candidate for being pardoned would be an otherwise well-behaved person who committed a desperate crime, like robbery or shoplifting, but is remorseful and does not seem likely to replicate his/her previous actions.

    January 18, 2012 at 7:16 pm |
  374. Kat

I think that a governor or president should consider the severity of the crime. If they committed a crime that puts you in jail for a month or two, the criminal should not be pardoned because by the time the government official decides to pardon, the criminal will have already served most of their time in jail. If someone who committed a really bad crime that keeps you in jail for at least 5 years, there could easily be some pardoning going on.

there is a reason they are in jail, beacause they did a crime so they should stay there

    January 18, 2012 at 7:39 pm |

They should stay in jail if they are still looking guilty, like before they let the criminal go, they should take a little test.

    January 18, 2012 at 8:13 pm |
  377. Makayla

I honestly believe, that it depends on the crime, consequences, and their past records before they went to prison. If they never went to jail or never really did anything to bad before and if their crime wasn`t the absolute worst crime ever, then, after maybe another trial with a vote from a jury , should (depending on the vote) be let out (but obviously on parole). On the other hand if it was completely opposite than they would stay in prison. Like I said it all depends on the situation.

    Sincerely,
    Makayla

I think they should see how bad the crime was and look at the background . I mean its not like I'm going let a murder out on the streets. Even a simple robbery of a store should not be dealt lightly. If the criminals think the won't get in trouble they'll do more worst crimes.

    January 18, 2012 at 8:47 pm |
  379. Kaela

Pardoning a criminal could be a cogent or not so clever idea. Depending on if the criminal is innocent are the standards of a pardon. Recapitulating the long process of investigation might be neccassary only for certain cases. There is also a huge chance of a pardon 2 minutes too late. To prevent this from happening make sure you claim the defendant innocent until proven guilty. Clearly, everyone deserves the chance to have freedom.

I think that a criminl such as murders or arsiniosts should be sent to jail, but people who break laws shouldn't. Because its a law not a crime.

I think that it is okay to pardon some criminals... if you truly think that they have changed. But you shoeld always make sure that they will be safe, have support, and not be a threat to society.
Pardoning one or two prisioners is okay, but more than 20? that's a lot of background checks...

Criminals be given a second chance, right? So when a judge looks upon a criminal, they have to consider what the criminal did, and if there we're any followers or victims and if the criminal was sorry about what they did.

NO! a pardon is a horrible idea! a criminal should never be released! what if they're a murderer?! Or a child molester?!? Do we really want to release them back into our society? Don't ever believe them when they say they've changed. Once a criminal always a criminal. If they didn't want to be locked up they never should have done something so stupid and wrong in the first place. Now they have to pay for their mistakes. They should never be 'forgiven'. If someone killed you baby or your family, and then said I'm sorry would you forgive them? NO!!! You lock them up and hope you never have to see their face again!

I think that if the judge who let the murderers out of prison actually thought that they were really going to call back then that judge needs to go back to law school he should be smarter than that. If i got out of prison i don't think they would call back and say how you doing. Do you?

If you commit a crime I think you should go to prison! It's not right they get out early, which means they can go out and do it again. People's lives are in jeopardy, because of this.

If crimes day will be a bad day then cops should arrest them. But i would think that this is like a battle of cops and criminals in every state, city and also every country in around the world. I wonder wish it would be over normal these days.
