TVs Watching You?

Imagine your cable box or DVR collecting information about the shows you watch and then sharing that information with advertisers.  Benefits:  Advertisers might get a better idea of what you might buy, and the ads you see could be more relevant to you.  Drawbacks:  There are concerns that your privacy is being violated, with records being kept of what you're watching and when you're watching it.

What do you think?

I believe that it does violate your privacy. But then again everyone knows what is shown on tv and it is not like people are going to be able to tell what you personally watch at home. But that could be a big step in technology.

Tv's watching people are to much of an invasion on privacy and in my opinion it would make me feel uncomfortable.

I think this is a great idea because lots of conmmercials are a nuisance to me and believe this could attract my attention!

I Would not mind as long as they don't get any more information the reason why is because when they advertise more people will get interested in buying these products.

Think about this – an adult that watches TV shows and movies that aren't really child appropriate, and he/she has a kid, they wouldn't want their children seeing suggestive advertisements. Or if someone just watches some really embarassing stuff, they wouldn't want other people to know about it.

I think that ads should be how they are. On the other hand if people are compensated for there time and aren't randomly video taped then they would be cool to see.

I think it is really wroung how some people will just violate us like that. It's the worst shance idea ever. Like what happens when were watching something secret that only we want to watch. It's called privacy

Privacy is better than selling a product and making money.

You shouldn't violate privacy it is wrong, and it should not be done.

i think its a bad idea that they do that it is not there privacy. If thay do that the person can find out and they mite get in big trouble. If the person finds out it is going to be a rough time fro thwm for going that

I think that it would be an invasion of privacy because the things people watch on t.v are not always good. for example, if an adult is watching a Rated R movie and they have small childen i dont think they would want their children to see commercials and ad's that relate to it. But then again it would help sell merchandise.

I don't see a problem with it. I feel like it is important for these people to locate our demographic to help them with their research. I don't find it a breach of my privacy for them to see that I watched any program. It's only fair when we use the DVR and cable we are offered by them.

I think while it can definetely benefit our entire television process, AND make it easier for advirtisers to be able to make sure their ads are going to people who actually care about what they're seeing, there is an extremely fine line between help and annoyance. This idea isn't fool-proof, in any way, shape, or form. If this setting can be turned off however, this can help us greatly.

Although I can see how it would be better if ads were more relevant, that is a major invasion of privacy. Imagine if someone monitored your emails and texts and gave it to random companies so they could sell you things. That is exactly what would be happening there; random companies would be seeing what we watch on our televisions – which is our business, not theirs.

    March 30, 2011 at 7:30 pm |
  17. Maverick

It says that the ads will be more relevant to me, so does that mean if everyone watches something different on TV, will the advertisement company have to individually set commercials for certain households? If that's the case, then that would be without a doubt impossible!

Just think about this, whould you like it if you git followed around on your T.V. It's almost like your being staulk on your oun personol T.V.

that is not cool.you dont want someone knowing all the things you watch when you watch it.

I believe this may be a great way to build up our economy. With more TV's adjusting commercials, people can start to buy more products suitable to them and then saved over time, this could possibly be a great factor to us coming out of this current recession.

i think is approtriate and saves time, if youre going to pay for it why not pay for what you want to watch.

  22. luke

i totally believe that the tv watching you is pretty insane that even when the video hasn't come out yet we would joke around saying that a tv watching you is weird almost like stalking. the tv companies have already gained billions of dollars so why target indivisuals who will only pay at least $600. So i say find new creative technology for example a tv that could surf the at the same time watching tv on the other half of the screen.

saves que... I think that the advertisers should give us privacy. Although advertisers will use our information they recieve as a way to supply better quality for the users, their should still be a good amount of privacy that we the users should have.

  24. Jacquie

I think that it is an invasion of privacy and that people shouldn't have to worry about people knowing every second of every day what they are watching just so they can get better advertisements. I don't even think your TV remembering what you are watching is going to make advertisements any better because they don't know if you’re watching the show or just left their TV on by accident. This may be a good idea but there are downfalls to this idea. Overall I don’t think anyone would like the idea of their TV remembering what they are watching.

I say some people think it not right for you to know what they are watching and what time they are watching it.I think it a good idea if they did it to teens beacause they are the most watching television in there homes

    March 31, 2011 at 12:21 am |
  27. Judy

I believe that it would be an invasion of privacy. The advertisers do not have any rights to know what people are doing on internet. This will only benifit the advertisors and the company. If people are interested in buying a product, they can actually search it on their own.

    March 31, 2011 at 1:47 am |
  28. Elly

I can see how this would benefit me in not having to to watch useless commercials, but the TV now knows what you like and don't like. Its a complete invasion of privacy, but it is a big step in technology.

    March 31, 2011 at 4:09 am |
  29. Ben

This is another form of personal information, basically. Big companies should NOT be monitoring what you're watching. It seems just as bad as strangers looking through your window to see what you're doing. Just go back to 'everyone sees the same commercial.'

    March 31, 2011 at 6:40 am |
  30. Courtney

I think it is a violation of one families privacy. They should be able to watch whatever they want to without everyone knowing. TV advertisers need to come up with a better idea to showcase their ideas.

    March 31, 2011 at 7:28 am |
  31. Kyle

I think it's a little weird....you can't seem to do anything without people watching or listening to what you're doing. Still, it could be a good thing in terms of watching better commercials. (No commercials at all would be fine as well!)

    March 31, 2011 at 7:46 am |
  32. Rosa

Personally, I think that they are going too far. Okay, it can be a benefit but imagine getting watched, getting followed by this ad almost every moment. This is too far, they shouldn't go one about one's privacy, right?

well I think you should put comercials that we like.why? so we have more entertament for us people

It seems like an invasion of privacy; kind of like stalking. I don't like the idea of watching TV and feeling like I am being watched back. It gives me a creepy feeling.

    March 31, 2011 at 8:49 am |
  35. bryan

I think it's good because a lot of times, the ads you're watching are boring and sometimes even inaproporate, so I think it's a good idea.

    March 31, 2011 at 8:51 am |
  36. kels

I think they should not control the ads on your tv. It may make some people uncomfortable knowing that someone else knows what they're watching. I think it would be more effective for advertisers if the people chose what ads they watch.

    March 31, 2011 at 9:05 am |
  37. Alex

Ads that are more relevant to what i am watching would be cool but i dont want people looking at what i am watching it would just be plain weird.

To get better adv for our future shopping, it is required to survey.
But ,of course there is privacy conversation. For me I do not care about it if I can get good adv. It is better to set particular regulation for protect one's privacy.

Our class feels that the "TV watching you" is an invasion of privacy. However, we do see the benefit in having commercials that would be of more interest to our age groups.

    March 31, 2011 at 9:39 am |
  40. Miranda

I suppose it's not that appropriate because to our know that all the cable company should do is to provide us with programs. They can do surveys or stuff like that individually or in another way instead of peaking into people's tv hours.

    March 31, 2011 at 9:51 am |
  41. Lee

I think it's invation of privacy. There is no our agreements. We have a rights that we keep our privacy from others. Also, I don't think it's helpful to us that companies collect imformation like that. It's just a benefit for them.

    March 31, 2011 at 9:55 am |
  42. Darío

I think the problem ist not even the privacy. The fact is that, I am the only one who should decide what to buy, based on my needs and my judgment. I think its pretty enough with the suggestions inside the publicitty, to buy products that I really dont' need and the life's models that television promotes and people adopt sometimes without notice it.

  43. Alexis

I like it and then again I think that its an invasion of your privacy. It's nice to see every Television show is dedicated to you, but then again you might not like everyone seeing the television shows that you like and don't like.

I don't think that its right to share other stuff because that is a major invasion of privacy. I like that they are trying to make commercials and advertisements better but that's just not right. It's just not right because that's like spying on someone through their own TV.

  48. Jessica

I think it is an invasion of privacy, but at the same time, we can't choose what commercials we watch, only the show, so if they watch us watching the commercial, chances are we don't even like the commercial or what its about.

I don't think this is the way to advertise I think there would be a better way to do this because I don't think a tv show expresses what you want to see as a product

  52. John

i think it is an invasion of privacy to let others know what your watching at that time i mean like no one want to no what your watching what if they don't care about what that person is watching or something like that.

    March 31, 2011 at 10:04 am |
  53. Jasper

I think that it wouldn't be a good idea because it's like someones watching what you watch and it's kind of creepy.

    March 31, 2011 at 10:04 am |
  54. Daikysha

I think that if you are watching a television in your own house that's your privacy because what if your watching a movie on lifetime about a crazy person then maybe the people that are watching you might get the wrong idea about you and that is not a good thing to have because what you do in your home is your business, let's say one of your friends asked you what you were doing?, or can they come over? and you don't feel like being bothered and you make up a lie to not hurt their feeling and then they are watching these advertisements and they see that you are watching t.v that might cause a fight or a argument.

    March 31, 2011 at 10:04 am |
  55. nancy

its a violation of privacy and it can be pretty creepy to think that your tv knows what you are whatching or other people know

  56. luis

I think it is better because you don't have to watch ads that you don't want to but i don't think they are doing something bad

If this technology spread, I am glad to be released from watching ads indifferent to me, but at the same time maybe I loose a chance to know commodities or ideas I did not even know before. So I do not want this technology to be used.

    March 31, 2011 at 10:17 am |
  58. Eliza

I think it's a good idea 🙂 because there is alot of random commercials that are really annoying.

    March 31, 2011 at 10:24 am |
  59. Matt

I think that this could be a great way to help businesses show their products to people who would really want to buy them. This could also bring a whole list of possibilities for all types of digital surveys, not just for business ads.

    March 31, 2011 at 10:26 am |
  60. Max

I don't like advertisements because they interfere with what I do. That should be enough for not invading my privacy.

I think it is O.K. because it is not like they are watching you go to the bathroom. And they aren't watching you literally just what you watch gets recorded and is now data for them.

  62. Even

I think that it does violate peoples privacy and that all the shows that people watch should be kept for there own mind.

ok it may be good mony but i like my shows not my mom and dads some shows of thers i like but not all

    March 31, 2011 at 10:37 am |
  64. Brenna

I beleive that it is kinda creepy that they watch you but they are only recording what shows you watch it is not like they are WATCHING YOU ! they are finding popular shows and the right commercials

    March 31, 2011 at 10:38 am |
  65. Alexander

I dont think this is a good idea because if multiple people are watching the same tv, and they all watch different channels, the advertisers might get the wrong information.

    March 31, 2011 at 10:38 am |
  66. Ashley

Its kind of a strange feeling about Ads company to be recording what you're watching on TV. They aren't trying to completely invade your privacy, they're just trying to out in more ads between shows to get more money for their company.

    March 31, 2011 at 10:39 am |
  67. Julia

Definitely invading privacy. It's just like if someone is starring at you, and they now know everything about you. What I watch is personal and private, I only want my friends and family knowing what I watch and what I like. It is definitely wrong watching someone without them knowing.

    March 31, 2011 at 10:40 am |
  68. sine

I don't like it a all because it would be annoying and a big invasion of privacy. Plus it's not any of their business. You also might want to watch every show.

    March 31, 2011 at 10:40 am |
  69. kaleb

This is unconstitutional and an invasion of privacy. I think they already track our phones and computers and so now our T.V's. This can't happen anymore.

    March 31, 2011 at 10:43 am |
  70. Dani

I think that it would be weird to have someone watching what shows you watch. If someone sees every single show you watch, then they know what you hate, like , and possibly are embarrassed about. That could be a good thing or a bad thing. It might help advertising but it is an invasion of privacy in my opinion.

    March 31, 2011 at 10:44 am |
  71. Mario

Changing the commercials to get people to bu and stuff, is stupid there all stupid me frankly i could care less but yes its a friggen invasion of privacy. its like someone one always watching you in you'r living room watching you.

    March 31, 2011 at 10:45 am |
  72. Jessica

I think the T.V. is watching you thing is not the best idea. Some people prefer privacy, while others don't. This personally would make me uncomfortable. For example, if my parents saw a show that is Rated R, my parents wouldn't want me to see commercials of that specific show. I would hate it if someone was monitoring what shows I watch and what shows I don't watch.

    March 31, 2011 at 10:45 am |
  73. ROBERTO

i think it is a violation of your privacy.it a violating it because not everyone want people looking at there business.

    March 31, 2011 at 10:45 am |
  74. Rich

I think this could go both ways because for some people they could consider it a violation of privacy and for others it might be okay. I personally think this is a good idea because then you don't have to see those commercials that aren't necessarily geared or aimed towards you. I think they should test it out and get feedback from the viewers.

    March 31, 2011 at 10:45 am |
  75. jessy

I have two different sides. I think it is a bad idea to have the ads with the stuff that u watch because if a parent is watching a rated-R movie and have a kid that is under age to see it then they should not show rated-R commercials for a new movie or t.v. show that is coming out. On the other hand i can see that they want to show t.v. shows or movies that relate to your movies and shows so that you could watch your shows that you like. It also advertises movies that come out in the movie theaters and you might want to see it and that gets them to go because of that commercial which gets people to go see that movie. I think it does not invade your privacy because it is not like the t.v. is watching you change or anything while you watch t.v. That is my opinion.

    March 31, 2011 at 10:46 am |
  76. Ashley

I don't think it is a very good idea because people don't want to be judged by what they watch on T.V. And if you watch the same type of T.V. shows, you wouldn't get a variety of commercials. Also, it would be an invasion of people's privacy because they wouldn't want someone seeing what they watch.

    March 31, 2011 at 10:46 am |
  77. Rivera

I get that they want make money from ads but that is a big invasion of privacy. Next thing you know they are going to sell you random stuff. When your parents or families watch T.V that is inappropriate and then your children watch T.V and inappropriate stuff comes on i don't think that is ok for companies to monitor what you watch and have ads you like from shows to come on.

    March 31, 2011 at 10:47 am |
  78. Chelse

Well i think that it is a smart way to make money. But i think that it is a violation of your privacy at the same time because some people dont want other people knowning what their watching. But it mite be a great idea because some people can never really find things that go with them on t.v and now they just mite get the chance to actually find those things.

    March 31, 2011 at 10:47 am |
  79. Carlos

I think that it would be evading privacy. Other people don't have the right to see what you are doing but they still do it any way.

    March 31, 2011 at 10:48 am |
  80. alyssa

i think it a good but then is not cause why are u go to advertisement that we are ready know about u should advertisement the thing that we dont know about

    March 31, 2011 at 10:48 am |
  81. Chelsey

I think that its kinda a weird thing how they could see every thing you do I feel like some ones watching me now from my tv its just like another thing kids can be afraid of.

    March 31, 2011 at 10:49 am |
  82. Zoey

I think it is very affective on use because if they know what you get they can advertise the stuff that you don't buy and they can perswade u to buy it.

    March 31, 2011 at 10:50 am |
  83. Megan

I think that it is a invasion of privacy because they would know what you like to watch and when you watch it. I also think though that it is a smart idea because then when you watch your favorite shows you can have your favorite thing that you like on the commercials.

    March 31, 2011 at 10:50 am |

I think that it is outragious. That is a complete invasion of privacy. People don't need to see what you are watching, ecspecially if it's something not appropriate.

i think thats invison of privicy cause if we dont buy it we dont want it and some of us coould be allget

Although I can see how it would be better if ads were more relevant, that is a major invasion of privacy. Privacy is better than selling a product and making money people don't need to see what you are watching, ecspecially if it's something not appropriate.

    March 31, 2011 at 10:53 am |
  89. fernando

i think it would be bad because if there is more than one person in the house and one watches t.v more than the other than they will only get what one persons likes

    March 31, 2011 at 10:53 am |
  90. Katie

they already know what you do online so i think there goin to much over your privacy Privacy is better than selling a product and making money People don't need to see what you are watching, especially if it's something not appropriate.

  91. CHERRY

I think that it does violate your privacy. But everyone knows what kind of shows are shown on t.v and Imagine if someone monitored your emails and texts and gave it to random companies so they could sell you things. That is what would be happening here. It's our business, not theirs.

It might be violated to the privacy for some people, but it isn't really that bad to me. Compare to switch the tv show continuously, I would rether just watch the ads I love. In addition, I think the advertisers just want to provide a better tv-watching quality.

    March 31, 2011 at 10:57 am |
  95. arturo

i think that it doesnt matter because some already know what your watching

    March 31, 2011 at 11:04 am |
  96. Jessica

That tv watching you thing would be an invasion of privacy! The tv would know and watch you when your watching tv. I mean if yoou were watching your favorite show and its not approiate for your youth group they would know and they would change it and that would be wrong.

    March 31, 2011 at 11:06 am |
  97. Portal Middle QUEST

Our class believes that this is an invasion of privacy. Adults might not care for certain commercials and vice versa. We also believe that it could be a good idea in a way that the commerical producers are not wasting as much time and money on something that the viewer does not care about.

    March 31, 2011 at 11:08 am |
  98. Mike

I think this is both a plus for producer and consumer. The producer knows what you want, so they can show you what your interested in. Which in return, makes it way easier for the customer to find what they are looking for. The downside of this would be the invasion of privacy, if they started doing this with T.V. and it works well, what will they turn to next? Are they going to try using cellphones and internet to see what you talk about to hit your groups of interests. They'll practically know our whole lives if they start looking at texts. As long as limits are set and this sticks to only T.V. I don't see this being a problem, I see it being a plus.

    March 31, 2011 at 11:12 am |
  99. Emileigh

I Believe that it is invading you privacy. They have no right to do that. Would they like it if someone was watching them? No. So they should not take away our privacy for advertisment. Really, it doesn`t matter at all. It is not appropriate to do that , even if it is better fo the ads. I would not like someone doing that.

    March 31, 2011 at 11:24 am |
  100. Brandon

Well that privacy is very important more important than ads but we can improvise like we have always done in all of the wars we have been in ect and we cold pick 3 or 4 channels and when one show goes to commercial switch to the next show when that one goes to commercial goes to the next one its that simple

    March 31, 2011 at 11:42 am |
  101. Dawson

This is ridiculous, people should not be able to see what you watch just to try and convince people to buy a product. Some people have privet stuff they like to watch and they don't know that people are seeing what they watch. If you want somebody to try sell a product then don't get into peoples business, I mean that is just wrong. Try selling something a different way instead of doing it this way. 🙂

    March 31, 2011 at 11:44 am |
  102. Lucy

I think that it must be an invasion of privacy!
I can't imagine if someone monitors my emails, credit cards, retail discounts.
It sounds crazy and I am very opposed to it!

    March 31, 2011 at 11:44 am |
  103. Cordell

I don't think that people should be able to track what you watch. America is obese. If food companies are able to increase productivity we might become even more over weight. Also if they are able to know what we are watching then next thing you know they will be able to put cameras in our TVs then maybe in our kitchens. We need to stop this now.

    March 31, 2011 at 12:27 pm |
  104. Mollay

I don't understand how this is thought of an invasion of privacy. If you tell your friend "I watched Glee last night" is that giving away private infromation? No, its not. It's not like giving out your address or telephone number, not even your name. It's not even like somebody reading your texts or emails.
You people are crazy, everybody thinks everything should be kept private nowadays.

    March 31, 2011 at 12:31 pm |
  105. Abrianna

Think about it this way, if you were watching something inappropriate and you didnt want anyone to know about it, then someother day you're having a little get together then advertisments about what you were watching come up, you would be very immbaressed. I think invasion of privacy is very wrong and we shouldnt have it.

    March 31, 2011 at 12:34 pm |
  106. Cole

Think about this – an adult that watches TV shows and movies that aren't really child appropriate, and he/she has a kid, they wouldn't want their children seeing suggestive advertisements. Or if someone just watches some really embarassing stuff, they wouldn't want other people to know about it.

    March 31, 2011 at 12:43 pm |
  107. Breanna

I like some of the commercials because they make me laugh and that would be sad if they were gone because of stalkers or the people that are watching us watch t.v.

    March 31, 2011 at 12:43 pm |
  108. mac

    its a inviasion of privicy.

    March 31, 2011 at 12:43 pm |
  109. Levi

I don't think it is an invasion, its not like they are watching you get dressed or anything, they are just trying to do business. I think they have every right to. Think about it, what bad are they really doing, all they're doing is whats best for the economy and their business.

    March 31, 2011 at 12:45 pm |
  110. Adrian

I think that this is a bad idea they are invading our privacy ans should not know what we are watching,,,but also its a good idea so im not saying good or bad

    March 31, 2011 at 12:45 pm |
  111. Joan

I think this idea is kind of bad because their invading our privacy, but It would be also cool if they made new shows based on the things we like to watch. 😀

    March 31, 2011 at 12:45 pm |
  112. Elizabeth

I really don't think we have anything to worry about. Personally, the advertisements don't affect or concern me as an individual, but this new experiment coulld be useful. I say let it be. The worst that could go wrong is that people know that you watch inappropriate shows, and even then, they most likely don't know you personally.

    March 31, 2011 at 12:46 pm |
  113. shampagne

I think it's a bad idea because its our privacy of what we watch on tv and they shouldn't be seeing of what tv shows or movies we watch. It would feel comfortable people watching you I think it's not a great idea.

    March 31, 2011 at 12:46 pm |
  114. lego

Tv's watching people are to much of an invasion on privacy and in my opinion it would make me feel uncomfortable.

    March 31, 2011 at 12:47 pm |
  115. Taylor

I think its outragious. It invades your privacy. People should not see what you are watching. If adults are watching bad movies then I don't think other parents want the children to watch those kind of movies.

    March 31, 2011 at 12:47 pm |
  116. Jesus

dont like that one bitt it invades privacy and people will not buy it if they know it does that.

    March 31, 2011 at 12:48 pm |
  117. samson

i think they should get rid of advertising cause companys advertise something and it dont help them at all people just u tvo and fast forward threw it all so get rid of em

    March 31, 2011 at 12:48 pm |
  118. Morgan

i think that its a good idea because most people theses days record the shows or movies so they dont have to watch the comersals... but if something they are interested in is on they might watch it. how would you know in the first place what movies where coming out or what new resturants there is etc....

    March 31, 2011 at 12:48 pm |
  119. Warren

I think it is a good idea because people mite like watching ads on tv more instead of having to hate watching ads.

    March 31, 2011 at 12:48 pm |
  120. Genaro

I think that if a tv is watching what I'm doing is a big invasion of privacy because lots of kids in my class even me think it is creepy of someone to be watching every thing we do.

    March 31, 2011 at 12:48 pm |
  121. Briana

Well I think that it is an invasion in privacy.I think that it is an invasion of privacy because most kids and adults don't know what's happening when there watching t.v .

    March 31, 2011 at 12:49 pm |
  122. lynette

I say that haveing the box record your records of what your whaching and when your whatching it is a via lashon of privesy. And that is not far to what people whach,it shud be keept to them self. Not for sum people to know.

    March 31, 2011 at 12:49 pm |
  123. Marcos

I think that this is a invasion of privacy because they know what u like while you are watching tv.Imagine if you are texting and when you send it also goes to a random company so they send adds so you can buy or purchase.Dont you think that this is outragious?its as if the people that work there are stalking you.Whats next a camera in the signal box?

    March 31, 2011 at 12:49 pm |
  124. Park

It's true that this can significantly invade your privacy. However, we cannot ignore the benefits of this TV box. In addition to those introduced in the broadcast, it can also reduce the cost of advertising, which can lead to cost-cutting effect of numerous products. As you know, advertising cost comprises much of the product's price. This can be a significant advancement in market economy.

    March 31, 2011 at 12:51 pm |
  125. tricia

    March 31, 2011 at 12:54 pm |
  126. Alston

i think this would be a good idea because what ever you watch would be in the advertisments and that would make advertisments better

    March 31, 2011 at 12:55 pm |
  127. peach

i think it is an invasion of privacy

    March 31, 2011 at 12:55 pm |
  128. Cynthia

I think that tv box should not be watching you or of what you are watching because it is olny our privacy to know not no one else. Also because it is creepy and weird.

    March 31, 2011 at 12:58 pm |
  129. Jose

I think they shoud not be keeping track of what people are watching and doing because that would be a big invasoin of privacy and i think it is creepy.

    March 31, 2011 at 12:58 pm |
  130. kristel

I dont think its a good idea because its kind of creepy of keeping track of what we watch and what if we were in the middle of our favorite show the ad will just get in the way. Its feels the best way is just let us have our privacy.

    March 31, 2011 at 12:58 pm |
  131. Ryan

I think it makes allot of sense, but people should be able to choose weather or not they want there box monitored. some people value there privacy highly and may chose to not buy the box just for this reason.

    March 31, 2011 at 1:00 pm |
  132. james

i thank they are trying to make you buy

    March 31, 2011 at 1:01 pm |
  133. Nick

I dont think the boxs should know what your watching cause i think it is in vasion of privacy. Also it is wired cause its our bissnues to know what were watching.

    March 31, 2011 at 1:02 pm |
  134. phoebe

no wonder someone was watching tv in the other room and i was watching tv in the living room and it had diffrent ads !!!! that is not fair thats invading our privacy!!!

    March 31, 2011 at 1:03 pm |
  135. Drake

I concure that the TV wathing you is a giant invasion of privicy and really spooky

    March 31, 2011 at 1:03 pm |
  136. Phillip

It Wrong Share To infomation to adversiter because they some are products on T.V. that children don't want to buy and people have a right to keep their show private.

    March 31, 2011 at 1:04 pm |
  137. Nelly

i really dont think this idea is so good cause i really dont want peaple to know at what time and what i am watching and the bow of apps is not like the box but i still dont like none of it

    March 31, 2011 at 1:04 pm |
  138. DAN

I think the tv companies are completely violating our privacy, i think they shouldnt do this

    March 31, 2011 at 1:06 pm |
  139. Arnold

I can see how this might benefit a little, but this is a major invasion of privacy. This system is monitoring what you buy and your credit card. Imagine getting loads and loads of junk mail on your email account. Plus, this also might lead to things like identity theft and sometimes may lead to bankruptcy for some people.

    March 31, 2011 at 1:06 pm |
  140. joseph

i dont think this is cool at all if we watching like a good movie u is going to shutit off in turn to something else that mess and crazy.

    March 31, 2011 at 1:06 pm |
  141. Jessica

I think that it is a bad idea because it is kinda going though your privicy

    March 31, 2011 at 1:06 pm |
  142. Shawn

While I watch TV, I don’t like to see advertisements. I want to watch my show, not the ads. And I also don’t like that they are watching me watch my show. I at least want a little privacy when I watch my show. I just don’t think this is a good idea at all!

    March 31, 2011 at 1:06 pm |
  143. Jenny

I think that it's not as big of a deal as people make it. Both people are benefiting because people watching the t.v. get to see commercials that are relevant to them and the advertising companies have a higher chance of people buying their products. I think it could go both ways though.

    March 31, 2011 at 1:06 pm |
  144. (: SIERRA :)

Think about this – an adult that watches TV shows and movies that aren't really child appropriate, and he/she has a kid, they wouldn't want their children seeing suggestive advertisements. Or if someone just watches some really embarassing stuff, they wouldn't want other people to know about it.

    March 31, 2011 at 1:06 pm |
  145. John

I think they have a right to do this. They do all that reaserch to find what they want to buy.

    March 31, 2011 at 1:06 pm |
  146. Daniel

If advertisers stream more relevant commercials, they would probably pay more for their advertisements. The advertisements would become more effective and fewer in number. So in a way it could be a good thing.

    March 31, 2011 at 1:06 pm |
  147. Karlin

I don't understand why people are so upset about this? The advertising companies are just trying to give you something that would be more interesting to you instead of you having to watch a ton of things that are completely boring to you. It's not like the advertising people are coming in to your house and looking through your stuff they are just looking at information that you have already put out there.

    March 31, 2011 at 1:09 pm |
  148. Evan

I think it is better if they show you stuff you want to see because then you aren't watching stuff you don't want to watch.

    March 31, 2011 at 1:09 pm |
  149. osama

i think that it is not a invasion of privacy. They research what we like so they can make money. It is not getting into any private info that will get into publice hands. Commercial people want to get rich and spend all of our money, it is smart to do. they are smart for doing that.

    March 31, 2011 at 1:10 pm |
  150. Noah

i would rather see comercials that are actually relevant to me and what i am watching.

    March 31, 2011 at 1:10 pm |
  151. John

They will get rich because people will buy more stuff from them.

    March 31, 2011 at 1:10 pm |
  152. Brad

I think that this is a good idea, but I thinks there are many draw backs with this system some people don't actually have DVR's. Also many people don't want to have people know every thing that they watch because it might be very bad to watch. It may be kids watching one thing then the parents get the TV and they still get all the kids ads like toys and other stuff that kids may want.

    March 31, 2011 at 1:10 pm |
  153. Brandon

i think personal adds are an invasion of privacy and that who ever thought of it is a perve and is stalking us individuals that are inesent. the guy u made this should have ppl stalk him and see if he likes it then maybe he will change our tv's back to normal. ppl should protest against this idea and sut him down.

    March 31, 2011 at 1:10 pm |
  154. Hailey!

i think that it is an invasion of privacy. They could be putting research into somthing that is more important then TV commercials. Its cool that they can create the technology that can remember everything you watch and match that with ads that would interest you but people should be able to watch what they want to watch without having to worry about people watching them.

    March 31, 2011 at 1:10 pm |
  155. Kaylee

To me its a little creeperish because if they monitor what your watching....like they said on student news that what you watch sort of reflects your personality...so its really weird,stalker-like and a violation of our privacy....So they shouldn't be aloud to record and share it with people we don't know or are even aware of. I honestly did not know that the cable box records what you watch and shares it with people that failed to mention anywhere that its being monitored. I personally dont even like commercials...they are just annoying...i skip them as much as i can. We have rights to our privacy and it's being violated by the companies. It should either stop, or the companies could ask their customers if they are comfortable with being monitored.

    March 31, 2011 at 1:11 pm |
  156. Lily

I think that it can go both ways. There are good things about this idea like you would only be watching the commercials that somehow relate to you. But it seems like this could be invading your privacy because your tv would be watching. And that seems a little bit weird...

    March 31, 2011 at 1:12 pm |
  157. Calli

The tv isnt technically watching you its benefitting you. Dont Hate It Just Go With The Flow.

    March 31, 2011 at 1:12 pm |
  158. nathan

i think that it is a invashon of privecy because they do not have a reoson to know what your waching so that they can send you advertisments.Another reoson is beacuse you may not what advertisments sent to you. Also because you may not whant people knowing what you like to whach. This is what i think about your cable box waching you and sending you advertisment.

    March 31, 2011 at 1:12 pm |
  159. giovanni

I think it is a good idea to put on commerical because what if you want to see a movie but with no commerical you dont know when its comeing out.

    March 31, 2011 at 1:12 pm |
  160. MARIO

I think it's a good idea because you don't have to watch commericial that don't interest you. Also, how is this an invasion of privacy it's not like it has hidden cameras are hing you or something come on now don't be paranoid.Next, people aren't watching you!!!!!!!!!

    March 31, 2011 at 1:13 pm |
  161. Ryan

Why should I (a young white male) have to watch [irrelevant television ads], when all I want to do is watch ESPN? I'm ok with watching an occasional ad on an upcoming sporting event or sports season, but I dont want to watch something that has absolutely zero relevance towards what I'm expecting.

    March 31, 2011 at 1:13 pm |
  162. yocelyn

i think that why sould the people give the reavls stuff becuase they are in a diffent team and they are going in the side of america.

    March 31, 2011 at 1:13 pm |
  163. Taylor

I belive that the 'T.Vs Watching you" is an ok idea but companies cant give you comercials just based on the T.V. shows you watch. Some poeple could watch kitchen shows all day but still want to see all the differnt adds on T.V. So I would say unless people know you personally, they cant decide what you watch based on someone that likes the same T.V shows.

    March 31, 2011 at 1:14 pm |
  164. Sierra

I think that this is not a voilation of personal "space" i mean its just like t.v omg what is wrong the only thing i think thats wrong is that, nobody can really afford to go out and buy everthing and thats what this is persuading you to do.

    March 31, 2011 at 1:14 pm |
  165. Kaylie

I think this is an invasion of privicy and should be stopped. They are watching us just so they can sell something. This is a leap in tecnolgy, but I'm not happy about it.

    March 31, 2011 at 1:14 pm |
  166. luke

i think that watching us throught the tv is wierd

    March 31, 2011 at 1:16 pm |
  167. Quinton

I think this is going way to far in means of privacy. Not only that, it would make you spend more money on items that are less relevant; such as junk food, soda, and anything else that is not needed.

    March 31, 2011 at 1:16 pm |
  168. Richie

I think that people should stop worrying about there privacy. There just seeing what your watching so they can make ads that actually are relevant to you. I wouldnt want ads about improving stuff that I havent broken... I think its a good idea. Even though all commercials suck I would rather watch some commercials that might intrest me or maybe something I would buy. Personaly I think there should not be any commercials.

    March 31, 2011 at 1:17 pm |
  169. Rebeccah

I think that it does violate our privacy, when they can track what you watch, and when..... Cause like it said on student news, what you watch is part of your personality, and posibly a little bit of how you actullay could act in real life.... I really did not know that something like this could happen..... It's just wierd... and i have never read anywhere that this could happen with your cable box.... All cable companies have failed to tell their customers that something like this could happen..... so when something like this happens.... it kinda makes me feel like i'm being stalked.....

    March 31, 2011 at 1:17 pm |
  170. Codey

i think that it is a invasion of privacy. i wouldnt want people to see what i am watching and useing it to make money of of it. It makes me feel like i am being tracked all the time when i turn on the tv.

    March 31, 2011 at 1:19 pm |
  171. Brenna

I think that it is not a violation of privacy! It allows you to watch ads that you are interested in, instead of ads that you dont even care about. I dont see how its a violation of privacy. Its not like theres a camera on the t.v literally watching you! I mean think about it, if you are in love with a show, for example C.S.I wouldnt you want more of C.S.I to be on? Instead of a show that you like! It is a genius idea, kinda like step brothers!!

    March 31, 2011 at 1:19 pm |
  172. Omar

I feel very agenst this because its an invation of pivacy. I realy dont want other people looking at what im waching at what time of the day, i just dont like it.

    March 31, 2011 at 1:19 pm |
  173. Emma

All this sued stuff. It is a violation but they already know what you are watching. They have machines in the sky watching us RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!! Suing people is not the answer JACOB!!!

    March 31, 2011 at 1:19 pm |
  174. Bekah

I don't think that it is a big deal that they know what we watch. It is just a TV show. they are doing this because they want to show you thinggs that they think you personally would be interested in. They aren't going to stock you or anything bad. I have sibblings and they watch TV that little kids would watch because they are little kids, same thing gose for teenagers and adults. They watch shows that interest them so what's that big deal if they send you something to get your attention. I think it is a good idea. There are a lot of people right know sitting at home trying to figure out how they can stop this, well i have a solution, IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT THEN DON'T WATCH TV.

    March 31, 2011 at 1:20 pm |
  175. Jasmine

Yes, this is most definetly an invadion of privacy. I should be able to relax and watch TV in the comfort of my own home with out worring about advertizers trying to sell me something. There are bowndries for advertizers. If they want to know more about what their target audience is interested in, they should take a pole, not spy on them.

    March 31, 2011 at 1:21 pm |
  176. Celeste

I think that this isn't a good idea. People watching/knowing what we watch is an invasion of privacy. People shouldn't need to know what we watch, when we watch it, nor control the commercials we watch. The should already be set up ahead of time and ready to go. Most people don't even watch them unless it the funny Cave-Man guy. : )

    March 31, 2011 at 1:21 pm |
  177. sunny

I think that it Is kinda cool that you get adds that are for you and that each t.v could have a diffrent add when they are watching the same channel. But It Is creepy that the t.v watches you, so I don't know about the idia.

    March 31, 2011 at 1:23 pm |
  178. Isaias

I think that we should not have the new cabel box because it is sometimes perivit what you wach and people wouid not feel good if other people know what you are waching.

    March 31, 2011 at 1:23 pm |
  179. Carlos

I think the advertisers should give us more privacy instead of knowing what we are watching and when we are watching that. I also think it is kind of cool because instead of boring random commercials there can be commercials about video games and football which i like.

    March 31, 2011 at 1:24 pm |
  180. joey

I think it is invation of privasy and that you should keep pooting camershals so we can know when the next movie is caming out for instans the movie Hop. If there were no camershals we would not now about the movie Hop.

    March 31, 2011 at 1:26 pm |

i believe that it does violate your privacy. it also macks me feel uncomfortable and i think it is a bad idea.

I think that there is no harm in advertisement companies observing what we watch. In fact, most people don't even know if they're being watched. Its a good way for advertisement to get ahead of their game and give us relevant information and ads.

    March 31, 2011 at 1:27 pm |
  183. Sam

I see this as a complete invasion of privacy. I feel a person should have the right to watch TV or surf the internet without being profiled by companies for advertisement.

    March 31, 2011 at 1:29 pm |
  184. Jasmine

Probably you could choose when you want to be traced and when you want to get the Ads that targeting on your interests, then you can decide what you want to show to the advertiser and the person who is watching TV with you.

I always knew this, and I still hate it. I mute the advertisments. Changing channsls so they won't know what I watch or like.

And I would be willing to pay more for a TV program that has very few or no advertisments. I simply hate them!!!!

I would like it because i don't like watching commercials that i don't care about but all together i don't like commercials that much.

I personally think it is okay. I like advertisements that appeal to me. Sports, video games, and politics. But I think it should also be optional by the viewers if they want this "service".

  188. Dominick

I feel our tv's watching us could be a good thing because companies could see what we want and what interests us. but at the same time its invasion of privacy and kinda creeps me out.

    March 31, 2011 at 2:05 pm |
  189. Hill

I think that it is not a bad thing. The reason I think this is that I only want to know about things in commercials that I want to know. I don't care if they made a new baby toy, I want to know about new, awsome movies. I also don't care if they made a new doll, I want to know about new, cool stuff.

well I do not think that the tvs are watching you. Its crazy if that thing
is watching you! what if poeple are watching you from the boxs. And that is no cool. And they watch if you are wtaching tv. wow.
They should not have that. And see the channles to watch.

I do have to say that when your watching a show that u somewhat dont like and shows you do like well how whould they know if you just fliped the channel to somthing you hate and then u walk in to a difrent part of the house. In many diffrent ways i do have to say its wrong. well thats my oppinon

I think that is creepy and if they want to watch you then they are conciderdstocking and that is not cool because we do not stock them and they should not beable to put eyes in the boxes because that means that they can watch you every second of the day so the people put the eyes in the boxes i would call them creepers/ stocker

I think that they should not be able to keep track of what we watch on TV. i think that it is a complete violation of privacy what someone watches is their own business. That would be like me walking into their offices and snooping around. No! It is just not ethical.

we think this is infiltrating our privacy. we don't watch tv that much and we hate adds. i don't think that adds about things i like would really help- lets just get back to the show! WOW! waste of money. We could use this money for better stuff, not commercials... People don't even watch commercials. And yes, they might have some stuff on there that we want, but who's really going to get up and go buy them. Maybe we could have the time or money to buy them IF THEY STOPPED WASTING MONEY ON USELESS STUFF.

i think that it is kinda cool but i would like it because its kinda dumb i really do like the fact that they would be knowing what i would be watching. i think that they shouldn't be allowed to do that in America because its a free country and they shouldn't be allowed to know that stuff.

I don't like it because people like to see every commercial.Even though it might not be there favorite thing. People don't have to buy things for there self they can buy it for themselves .That's why I don't like it

It sis true that your tv knows what your watching and when you watch it if the person uses dish network. It lets your record your show. So that tv will know what your watching and when your wathing it. For other tv's it would be kinda scarey if it was watching me.

I THINK IF A TV IS WATCHING EVERY THANG YOUR DOING ALL THE TIME THAT IS A BIG INVASION OF PRIVACY BECAUSE LOTS OF KIDS EVEN ME THINK IT IS CREEPY BECAUSE SOMEONE IS WATCHING USE AND I THINK THAT IS JUST CREEPY.

    March 31, 2011 at 2:48 pm |
  212. Mark

I think that the tv station tracking every channel you go on is an invasion of privacy. If companies want you to buy their product they have to get it out to all viewers and not just the ones they think are more likely to buy them.

    March 31, 2011 at 2:48 pm |
  213. Kayla

I think this is an invasion of privacy. They should not be able to know what your watching and when you are watching it just so advertisers can put on commercials that may interest you.

    March 31, 2011 at 2:48 pm |
  214. Jamie

I agree with both sides because it would be nice to watch commercials of things you like, but I think that it's weird that my cable box watches everything I watch. I'm going more towards the no side though because if you watch TV and see adds you like, you won't want to get away from the TV and you'd be glued to it which makes you lazier and always wanting to watch TV.

    March 31, 2011 at 2:48 pm |
  215. juan

well i think i wont like it because that is like an invasion and i wont like people watching what you are looking at

    March 31, 2011 at 2:49 pm |

I don't see a problem with it. I feel like it is important for these people to locate our demographic to help them with their research. I don't find it a breach of my privacy for them to see that I watched any program. It's only fair when we use the DVR and cable we are offered by them.

    March 31, 2011 at 2:49 pm |
  217. Jovan

This is a waste of money for commercials, and even though i would want to get the commercials i want to watch I wouldn't want them to know what Im watching.

If you only put things that they think you would buy on there, then how are you supposed to investigate in more things. How are you supposed to look at different things if only certain categories are there for you to look at. In my opinion I think that this is a bad idea. If they make it easier for people to just sit and call someone to buy something, it will start to make people rely on the t.v.'s to get things. Then no one will go out and get things they will just sit there and order it.

    March 31, 2011 at 2:50 pm |
  221. Araceli

I think they shouldn't keep track of what we watch on t.v. That's our privacy . And also what somebody watches is none of their bussiness. It's like if we went into you're office and was looking around. NO THATS NOT RIGHT!!!

    March 31, 2011 at 2:50 pm |
  222. Michael

I think it is a very large invasion of privacy. It would make me fell violated. It is just a another way for perverts to stare at you, just like the new airport security. It may help the viewers attention but do the companies really want people to stare at them? It is a horrible idea.

    March 31, 2011 at 2:50 pm |
  223. Samantha

I think its a big waste of money. Why should we waste money on commercials when no one even watches them.

    BILLY"S POINT IS AMAZINGLY AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    March 31, 2011 at 2:51 pm |
  225. Alexis

I would say no this is not so good idea because depending on how many people are in your household everyone has their favorite shows. So its not just targeting the person watching tv it is targeting everyone who is watching tv so I would think it is a waste of money. Also I dont like seeing the same comerical all the time so if they have the same catagory for my liking their is bound to be a lot of repeats. Also no one like watching comericals any way so I believe this is a waste of money.

    March 31, 2011 at 2:51 pm |
  226. Victor

I think that it would be creepy to have big business guys paying attention to what you watch. I don't watch T.V. enough to really care, but can't ad people find something better to do than invade your privacy. To be honest, this really makes me mad how people can adjust to MY favorite shows. Gosh, they are CRAZY!

    March 31, 2011 at 2:52 pm |

    I ALSO AGREE WITH CHAUNCEY

I think that they should see what we are watching because some people that work on that company they might use our information and they might fake an id or something and they could see what we watch or they might see our parents credit card and they might take some money from them and i also thing that they should not be able to keep track of what we are watching on TV and that is a complete violation of privacy what someone is watching the TV is their own business.

I THINK ALL OF YOU ARE WRONG

    March 31, 2011 at 2:55 pm |
  230. Rutta

I think it is dumb because people don't really pay attention to commercials that much anyway. It doesn't that they are keeping track of what I am watching I just think that it is a waste of time. I think companies could better spend their money advertising in magazines instead.

    March 31, 2011 at 2:57 pm |
  231. Matt

I think it is a huge invasion of privacy. i think it is ridiculous just for showing ads that most people do not watch anyways. To me it feels like they are putting a camera right in your living room.

    March 31, 2011 at 3:04 pm |
  232. Danielle

I can't choose a side for this, but I'm leaning towards thinking it's wrong. It is nice to have ads that are geared towards you, because they can help you with savings, but at the same time it is wrong for advertisers to know so much about the people they are studying without pemission. If people signed up for this it would be right, but they aren't therefore it is bad.

    March 31, 2011 at 3:15 pm |
  233. Brenda

This is actually a pretty cool advancement and use of modern technology. Maybe they should be collecting data over the shows that are being watched by which T.V. I am one who hates irrelevant, annoying commercials.
However, I believe the amount of information retained by them should be limited. It shouldn't really make that much of difference anyway because certain commercials only play on certain channels. For instance, you wouldn't find a commercial advertising toys on Comedy Central, which is aimed at an older audience.

    March 31, 2011 at 3:26 pm |
  234. Carly

I think its an invasion of privacy. If i buy something and then a commercial comes on for the same product, its not going to make me buy the product more even if it is something I like.

    March 31, 2011 at 3:40 pm |
  235. KG

I think it is a good idea but my point is that it might be a total invasion. i bet my mom wouldn't like this idea because she doesn't like people invading her privacy, especially on her credit card. but my daddy wouldn't care, at least if they don't mess around and take away anything that has to do with money.

    March 31, 2011 at 3:47 pm |
  236. Emily

I would be careful what shows i watch from now on. I don’t like the fact that my DVD or cable box sends information out to advertisers. I would feel pretty violated if my DVD or cable box memorized my favorite shows. What about if you send out your credit card number to buy something off On Demand. Wii someone take your card use it and then you get all the bills for it? I wouldn’t like that at all.

    March 31, 2011 at 3:49 pm |
  237. Genevieve

It is kind of wierd, but it is interesting to! I mean, you get stuck watching the same old commercials. They might pay attention to them if they want to. The pepole are probably tracking what we watch because they want to know what you like to find out what kind of products you would buy.

    March 31, 2011 at 4:10 pm |
  238. Liam

Yes some people may seam that this is an invasion of privacy for cable cvompanies to know what your watching but i dont believe it is. The companies are trying to persuade you to buy products they believe you would enjoy. Yes they are trying to make money, but who isnt these days? Even though you may believe its an invasion of privacy its not, the companies are trying to promote new items and make money

    March 31, 2011 at 5:06 pm |
  239. Carley

I don't think that this is a bad idea, it's just a persons job to figure out what you might want to buy, it's just for advertising. Just think about it, there are people that watching everything that you are doing on your computer when your online. Everyone has a digital fingerprint you know! It's amaing how some person has the smarts to come up with a piece of technology to be able to do this.

    March 31, 2011 at 5:24 pm |
  240. Liz

I dont think it's a invasion of privacy because why should you be embarresed over a tv show or movie? ( unless it inapproprite). It really bugs me when i have to wacth the same commercials over and over for a prouduct or show that I'm not even intrested in. I think that this is interesting that if your neighbor is wacthing the same show they won't see commercials I'm seeing!

    March 31, 2011 at 5:26 pm |
  241. Sol

As you said, there are benefits and drawbacks.

But I think they should not, because today, there are lots of ways to figure it out such as e-voting.
Alsp, it could be huge damage to one's privacy.

    March 31, 2011 at 6:18 pm |
  242. Qi

I don't care if other people knowing what I am watching, and I prefer not to to watch ads which has nothing to do with my need, so I like the idea of showing the relevant ads to me.

    March 31, 2011 at 6:25 pm |
  243. Chelsie

I think it is just plain wrong for the cable companies/commercial companies to record what we watch. Our TV's are a private way to send time at home and have quality time with your family, and for someone to mess that up is just immoral. Think about if your television company was recording the shows you watch? I think it is a major invasion of privacy, and just plain creepy.

    March 31, 2011 at 6:44 pm |
  244. Gregg

I think that this idea is going to be a very controversial topic, but I beleive that seeing more relevent ads to me is less of a waste of time. Instead of saying "Aww man a comercial!" you can say "wow that looks interesting, i'm glad that comercial came on!"

    March 31, 2011 at 7:06 pm |
  245. Djuna(read as Juna)

I think that it is an invasion of privacy, but everyone will agree it is a ssaving of time to look for an advertisement, so even if it IS an invasion of privacy, everyone should risk it.

    March 31, 2011 at 7:23 pm |
  246. Charlotte

I think this is an invasion of privacy. Its no one's business- not even an advertisement company- what shows someone is watching or when they are watching them! Ads are ads, t.v. watchers are aware of them and they are a part of t.v.! Most people get up and do something else during commercial breaks anyways, so they dont even see many ads!!

    March 31, 2011 at 7:48 pm |
  247. Nick

This is a violation of privacy. Just like the government isn't supposed to save or check your calls and emails, companies shoudn't be able to see what you watch on tv. It's illegal for the GOVERNMENT and they have a better REASON to do it. Also, multiple people live in most households: adults, teens, kids, seniors, etc. Since they can't tell who watched it the commercials based on what people watch wouldn't work. If a senior is watching one channel and they advertise to children on another for senior products it won't work.

    March 31, 2011 at 7:49 pm |
  248. Taylor

I think that this is a good thing. It saves you time in watching commercials that may not pertain to you. This also saves advertisers money by knowing which TV station they would get the most veiwed by thier target market.

    March 31, 2011 at 7:50 pm |
  249. Chole and Summer

I totally agree with everyone who is against the idea. It is completly invading your privacy.

    March 31, 2011 at 9:35 pm |
  250. Kate

About privacy, they're not watching YOU, they're recording your dvr. So yeah they can see that your watching Glee on Tuesday night, but a lot of people are, it' not giving away that much about who you are. Also, how can you get into something new if you only get certain commercials? So I think in a way it's good and in a way it's bad.

    March 31, 2011 at 11:37 pm |
  251. Kali

I think it is important to have your privacy. Even though advertisers want to promote whatever they might be selling, they have to keep in mind that everyone needs their privacy. It would feel as if a camera were on you at all times............ which might make people feel uncomfortable.

    March 31, 2011 at 11:49 pm |
  252. Caylyn

Acts like this may benefit the advertisers, however, everybody has a certain right to privacy. People don't often watch commercials with all the new systems like DVR and not many people will feel comfertable knowing the fact that they are being watched and used for an advertiser. It may be helpful to advertisers but I don't agree with it. Like I said before it's an invasion of privacy and most people may not be okay with it either.

    April 1, 2011 at 12:07 am |
  253. Nick

It's not like the people who monitor the T.V. are actually watching every movement you do in your house. It actually is very smart. It will save people from watching these bad ads and let them watch ones that interest them. This is not a way of invading your policy but it is a way to help save people trouble...

    April 1, 2011 at 8:30 am |

I think it's an invasion of privacy. Don't get me wrong I take great enjoyment in TV but this has gone way to far. I'm not calling any one out in particular out but what if someone had a TV in they're bedroom. If the TV people could see them through they're DVR they could feasibly see them getting dressed and other things like that. Again I say "invasion of privacy!"

    April 1, 2011 at 8:55 am |
  256. Tamara

believe that it does violate your privacy.believe that it does violate your privacy like the fact that they would be knowing what i would be watching. i think that they shouldn't be allowed to do that in America because its a free country and they shouldn't be allowed to know that stuff.

    April 1, 2011 at 9:18 am |
  257. Catlyn

This new idea of the t.v. watching you is not literal. It's just a way for the t.v. company to gain business. There are different ways it could be taken to far, but in some ways it is a very interesting idea. What if your information was to be shared with the rest of the world though, how would that make you feel?

    April 1, 2011 at 9:20 am |
  258. Alana

I believe that it does violate your privacy. people should have the choice if they want their satellite box watching what they watch. Not only because it is an invasion of privacy, but because it may charge the people additional cost they do not wish to pay.

    April 1, 2011 at 9:20 am |
  259. Robb

Consumers should have the choice to determine if they want cable boxes or DVRs to collect information about them, instead of businesses profiting at the expense of the consumer without permission. A simple switch on the device itself would be a perfect compromise for the business and the consumer. If the businesses want to encourage the collection of data then they should offer a discount on services provided.

Consumers should have the right to market their choices, not have them pick-pocketed from their own couch.

    April 1, 2011 at 9:24 am |
  260. Grace

I think that it's a cool idea, but it invades privacy. it's almost like giving a robot its own mind. My little sister likes to watch children's shows like Dora, SamSam, and Go Diego, Go! I wouldn't like to see commericals about products relating to these shows. The commericals they show just might not be relevant to everyone who is watching T.V, just to the one (my little sister) who dosen't care about cmmercials.

    April 1, 2011 at 10:12 am |
  261. Grace

I think that this is a very bad idea.
Kids watch kids shows so that means that the commercials would be targeted to kids. The commercials could be about something negative like smoking or drugs.
That would be a terrible influence.

    April 1, 2011 at 10:17 am |
  262. Jel- Anjelica

My opinion is that we need privacy and watching our televisions is weird. Its a cool idea but i wouldn't want that to be on my tv. Hopefully they dont pass it and just keep as an idea.

    April 1, 2011 at 10:18 am |
  263. Christian

I think it's a good idea. I hate when i have to watch commercials that don't intrest me. It's not that much of any invasion if privacy because it's just tv, it's not like there in your house watching everything you do. So i think it's a good idea and that they should go ahead with it.

    April 1, 2011 at 10:19 am |
  264. Franco

I think that it's kinda cool they way they have the technology that they could do that, but i think it is an invasion of privacy. I don't think that they should have the right to just go and do it without asking the people. I think that if they want to do it they should ask or something not just go and do it.

    April 1, 2011 at 10:19 am |
  265. mack

I do not think that this is a privacy problem. They just want to see what people are interested in, so they're not spending billions putting ads up that no one is going to watch. But there should still be a choice to if you want it or not, because some people might think that it is invading their privacy. It would be a good thing for me cause i hate watching stupid ads.

    April 1, 2011 at 10:19 am |
  266. Beniamino

I think is not right I would not people knowing what I will be watching because what would happen if my mother would happen to watch one of her shows. So now when I go and watch my shows I have the ads that i dont want.

I think that this is a very good idea, because people will be more interested in the add that they watch and its possible that they would actually pay more attention and watch them. A lot of time is wasted when these adds come on because they don't watch them. I do think it's weird how they keep a record on what we are watching though.

I think that this is not a bad thing and does not invade privacy. All what they are doing is looking at what you watched, it's not like they are watching you, it's just the shows you watch and when you watch them. They should have an option to turn this ability off and if people really wanted the TV companies to send you certain things, they would turn on the option.

  269. Shayne

I think that it is a good idea, but they really should give us the option to be monitored or to not be monitored. It is violating your rights, but it could also help you watch what you would like to watch.

I think that its a major invasion of privacy! I understand why they want to do this but, its kinda weird. Also not a lot of people watch commercials because they can fast forward through them or they could just change the channel.

You can either love or hate this idea. You can hate the fact that random business's are collecting information from you based on what you are watching. Or you can love the idea that this information is being collecting and now you can watch something that actually appeals to you during these commercials. Personally I do not care.

i think that its a good thing because it will be some commercials that you wold like by the certain shows that you watch. I don't think there invading privacy that much they are looking at the shows you watch and putting advertisements in that are based on what you like to watch. it would be better instead of watching advertisements that no one likes to watch.

I dislike the idea of every time I watch a commercial, I am being watched to see if it is influencing me at all. I think it is like trying to directly control what you see, and try to get you to buy things you will not likely need. I cannot and will not ever agree with this idea. I do not understand why anyone would like this idea of being watched, it is like having your phone tapped or your car bugged. I suppose in the end, one must hope that people realize how foolish this idea is.

I think that the advertising agencies just want to see what we watch that way they can see what we are interested in and what shows we like. I do not see the reason why people think that this is an invasion of privacy because its not. The advertisers just want to see what commercials and shows that would be interesting to you. Some people might be for this idea and others might be against this idea, but I am for this idea.I think that if the advertising agencies engage this idea, many people will not have to watch boring advertisements while waiting for their show to come back on.

  275. Treysean

I think i is a good idea because all of the unnecessary ads that they show are really annoying, and they show the same commercials over and over. In my opinion it would be better to not show ads at all but if they do it is better to gear it towards things that you would most likely be interested in.

I think that it is a good idea for companies. I do not think that it is a invasion of privacy.

I think they have no right to watch what you are watching and what you do at home. What do you think of someone watching what you are doing at home??

    April 1, 2011 at 10:21 am |
  278. Caitlin

I think this is a good idea because ads can get annoying especially if they're are ones you don't like. I also think it is a good idea because if they are watching what you like to watch they will just show you the ads that might interest you. It can violate your privacy, but you should have the option if you want them to watch what you are watching or not. This is very useful because you can actually enjoy watching t.v instead of being bored from all the ads you dislike.

  279. Shannon

I think that it's an invasion of privacy but it's not that big of a deal. Just because companies know what you watch doesn't personally mean that they are stalking you.

I think this technology is a big step towards the future. Advertisers who are gaining the information will use it to the watchers advantage. The commercials will be relevant to you, and you will not waste time watching ads that are not relevant to you. This is not an invasion of privacy because all they are monitoring is what your watching.

The point of commercials is to show you thing that you do not have and it dose not have to be something you like. If get rid of commercials all to gether!!

  282. triston

it can be used for bad and good if some one gets on and they could get your personal info that you dont wont for them to school but the good part is you dont have to see a dall comerchal and you could get adds from for things you

    April 1, 2011 at 10:54 am |
  283. Ryan

I think it's good that advertisers know what you like to watch, because you will be advertised in what you like instead of things you are not interested in. It's really not invading your privacy that much, but the cable companies should tell you that your shows are being monitored, and ask if you would like this or you don't want this.

It really depends on the household. There could be just one person or several that watch similar shows, in which case it would be fine and work, but in a large family with people of different ages with completely different opinions and favorites, it would be hard to make sure the right person sees the right ad.

    April 1, 2011 at 4:38 pm |
  285. Heather

I think this is a HUGE invasion of you privacy. I think this would be fine if you could choose if you wanted your TV to "watch you," but I think it should be an option if it even happens. Soon, companies may be wanting to see what you do on the Internet. That would be an outrage!! I think this idea should be deleted and never thought of again.

    April 1, 2011 at 4:45 pm |
  286. Dominic

Also no one like watching comericals any way so I believe this is a waste of money.

personally i would rather have my tv watch me because i do not like watching somehting i don't like on television. It's only business and people need to relax because the tv is just watching what we are.

  288. Katie

TV's shouldn't be watching people and what they watch. not only does it invade privacy but it isn't accurate. some people go to new channels to see what is on and don't watch it ever again or they accidentally hit the scrolling button and turn back. just because someone thinks something is appealing, in times like this, people cant get everything they like or see. they should quit watching people and let what commercials go on go on, not manipulate them.

    April 1, 2011 at 8:24 pm |
  289. Catherine

I believe advertising is well, because it helps raise money for the company, but it also is a distraction to people worldwide. Most of the materials that my parents want are from advertisement, and I think it's quite unfair how they invade you favorite television show, or favorite music group. Now if my DVR were to keep track of this, it would be MORE demanding. Not that they invade my privacy, but they also try to advertise products and materials that they know I would like.

I think this is cool that they are giving us commercials that we would be interested in, but it is also an invation of privacy! Now that I know that my TV is watching me, I look at my cable box and am like,"Are you really watching me?" It is FREAKY.

Privacy is a big part of people's life and if even the T.V can't respect that then no one can!

    April 1, 2011 at 9:55 pm |
  292. Holly

I feel that this is a MAJOR invasion of privacy !!! When you watch TV , you shouldn't have to worry about someone seeing what you watch and then controlling what commercials are on your screen. Though it does not really matter, because not many people pay attention to commercials anyway.

    April 1, 2011 at 10:03 pm |

it should be somthing you should turn off.

A violation of privacy is a whole different concept than this, this is just telling what you watch and when you do, when you really don't want people seeing where you live.

    April 2, 2011 at 12:58 am |
  295. lesrisa

this situation has its pros and cons. Pro; first, they aren't watching your personal life and what you are doing and second they might show commericals that you'll be interested in. Con; privacy is violated to a certain degree because they are keeping records of your viewing selection without your permission

I think it is an invasion of privacy. Like, I mean I like commercials intresting to me but do the buisnesses really need to know what you are watching all day? I mean, seriously!

    April 2, 2011 at 11:53 am |
  297. caitlin

I think its really cool. I think its not going to do anything about your privacy. Its amazing how when you watch the T.V show and then they can see it and see what you want to buy.

    April 2, 2011 at 1:20 pm |
  298. Matt

I think this is a great idea because if I was an adult watching t.v on how to remodel my house i wouldn't want to see commercials about restaurants and other useless things i would want to see commercials about remodeling my house and see places to go to buy useful tools.

    April 2, 2011 at 1:58 pm |
  299. Laura

If only the people who devoted so much time to changing advertisements to our liking devoted their time to inventing life-saving technology for hospitals, or technology that could protect us in some way. I think our own televisions watching us is going way too far. I don't want to sit in front of my t.v. and feel like I'm being stalked by a company who wants me to buy their product.

I think that it is and is not an invasion of privacy at the same time however i think that they shouldn't just play commercals that pretain to you becuase i enjoy watching commercials that dont have anything to do with me. I also think they should just play all commercials becuase I think that some of the commercials are very funny and I enjoy watching them!

    April 2, 2011 at 3:24 pm |
  301. Bianca

It's not that the technology itself is THAT scary... It's just scary to think what would happen if the wrong people got ahold of the data. It's like genetic engineering - we should be very careful to make sure we SHOULD do something, not just that we COULD do something!

    April 2, 2011 at 4:25 pm |
  302. Abigail

Having your tv watching you not only benefits you, but also the advertisers. It is a win-win situation, you get to watch commercials that interest you, and the advertisers get to make money off of it.... It isn't hurting anybody, it is actually helping everybody!

    April 2, 2011 at 4:33 pm |
  303. Joseph

That is very annoying. If you want to know what people watch just ask them. Don't invade there privacy. They can tell you if they want.

    April 2, 2011 at 5:02 pm |
  304. Neha

I think this is an advancement in technology as well a privacy violation. I feel happy that I don't have to watch ads that I don't need or don't care about. Also, I wouldn't want to watched this way. It would make me uncomfortable when I'm trying to relax!

    April 2, 2011 at 5:11 pm |
  305. Emma

It is ok because it is not like they are in your living room watching you and you wouldn't want a five year old to be siting, watching saterday morning cartoons and suddenly an inapropriate commercial comes up.

    April 2, 2011 at 5:14 pm |
  306. Sara

I wouldn't like having my TV watch me. These people could be lying to us so we won't stop watching TV. If I was these people, yeah I would lie, but i also want to tell the truth. It's kind of creepy that TV's watching you. I say we shouldn't have TV watching us. Just play whatever commercials. I don't care what commercials play. I don't want TV watching me.

    April 2, 2011 at 5:54 pm |
  307. Christina

I am deadset against this "personalized advertisments" buisness. Not only is it a violation of privacy, but what next? Companies already track where you go on the internet. Why allow them to extend their grip over us any more? We have a right to watch and do what we want through TV and the Internet without cut-throat greedy companies trying to entice us while we watch M*A*S*H and "Whos Line is it Anyway" reruns.

    April 2, 2011 at 5:58 pm |
  308. Montse

I think we need our privacy. Other people wouldn't want you to watch you so you shouldn't either. we need our privacy. i wouldn't like it you wouldn't like so we should stop this NOW!!!

  309. Morgan

I think it is overly wrong and not useful. it is also invating peoples personal lives.. it should be extremly illegal.

  310. Brad

I think this a total invasion of privacy. How the companies get the information from our cable boxes I don't know . The fact that they can is just creepy.Knowing what we watch is like knowing where we go and what we do.Most families mute the tv on commercials anyway so i don't think this will benifit a lot of companies. I think it would be nice if most of the companies if not all took a survey of whether people agree or disagree on this idea.

    April 2, 2011 at 7:23 pm |
  311. Isabel

it's not the best idea, they didn't ask people for permission. but as long as there's not too many ads I am okay with it.

  312. Justice

My personal opinion is that anything that comes into your house and watches you is a invastion of privicy. Yes, this would be a invastion of privicy and not a good idea for anyone but the companys that want to do this.

i think it does invade their privacy whether your a kid or an adult it is still invading your privacy

I think that is not a good thing to do because who cares what we watch I don't care what my friends watch the only person who dose is my mom and ya that is a good thing

no way! that could violate privacy, and do a whole lotta other stuff!

    April 3, 2011 at 10:24 am |

I would say that it's kind of going to far because just thinking that somebody knows your watching them, it's creepy. Besides, if you don't buy that product they'll keep showing that commercial and it gets annoying seeing it over and over again.
