Texting, Walking...and a Ticket?

Should there be a law against texting while walking?
"Tuning in and tuning out can be a fatal combination on the streets of New York," says New York state Senator Carl Kruger (D-Brooklyn).  That's why he wants to make it illegal to use any electronic device while crossing the street.  The idea may not actually become a law, but if it does, it could mean a $100 ticket for listening to an MP3 player or calling a friend when you're walking from block to block.

What would you think of a law like this?  And let's say you get caught texting while walking in a place where that isn't allowed - what would you say to defend yourself?

if someone is crossing the street and was texting it would give a higher possibility of being hit by a car and getting seriously injured. so a law that said you cant use a electronic device could save a life or many lives.

The proposed law is ridiculous! Senator Kruger gives Dems a bad name. Keep Your Laws Off My iPod!

I think we should they should have a law against it. It is dangerous to walk across the street and messing with your IPod, because if you are looking at the IPod then how are you looking at the road?

I dont think you should get a ticket for texting and walking beacuse you can get distracted by anything. Your constantly thinking about something.

No, because many people walk from home to work or school and if something ever happens and they need to call emergency they would be fined. So I believe we should not have a law against this matter.

Of course. I wouldn't want to go to jail or fine any money. I would definately pretect myself. I will tell them it was a really urgent call or I need my MP3 player to listen to my sister's voice or something. I do not wish t opay any FINES!

I think that getting a ticket for texting (or doing anything else that's electronic) while walking is ridiculous. People should get to do what they need to do on-the-move.

I don't think a law like this should be passed. It is ridiculous why would someone get a ticket for texting while walking? I understand texting while driving but getting a ticket for walking?? I know I wouldn't be happy if I got a ticket for listening to my ipod. I do it all the time I go places and I'll be listening to my ipod. Whats the problem with using any devices while walking its no like your going to get hurt by doing it. You can still see where your going your not going to cause someones death by texing while walking, calling someone while walking,or listening to your ipodwhile walking.

I think that this should defiantly become a law! You could get hit by a car when crossing the street if your focus is on texting or talking on a cell phone. But before the government puts any energy into this law they should focus on a bigger issue texting and driving.

I believe that electronic devices are so common in the 21 cenury that if they started giving tickets out for having them while crossing the street there would be massive protests also i believe they are invading peoples personal privacy

I think that texting or using any electronic devices that occupys your vision or ability to see while crossing the street should become a law. Although I dont think that this law should apply while in a store or inside a building. I think it should apply only while crossing the street because that is when you can actually get seriously injured or injure other people. But if your in a store or inside a building it wont really affect anybody.

I think that there should be a law for texting and walking. If there is a law for texting and walking it will be a big safety rule for the pedestrians.

I think there should be a law because if you were walking across a street and not paying attention, someone could pull out and hit you. If i ever got a ticket, I would agree and take my $100 dollar fine. Yet, I would have to babysit for a long time.

Now, I listen to my iPod all the time while I'm walking; it doesn't affect me, or any feeling of safety at all. Texting, though, is the question here. You hear all the time of people getting hurt while distracted by their phones, texting. On the other hand, I don't think ticketing for MP3's or iPods would be fair; but I can see this working for texting.

i think this is a great idea because people should pay attention while crossing the street. texting is to much of a distraction while you should be paying attention to the traffic that you will be walking in front of.

I think Text-Walkers shoulld be careful but they should'nt be fined for it. Having to pay would be kind of exteme.

I think texting while walking can cause problems, for your head isn't up to look at dangerous problems. But tickets for calliing and using your mp3? It's true that you might get distracted, but you can see where you're going. And if I was caught with an electronic device while walking, I would head to CNN student new's blog to see what other people said

Texting while driving is really bad, texting in school will get you busted, but walking? Surely not many people would get killed doing this, but making it illegal is going over the top. If this does become law, it would make us as a country look too strict. And, if the pedestrian is hit, it's their fault and the driver's fault.

    January 26, 2011 at 9:17 pm |

I think Text-Walkers should be careful but they shouldnt be fined for it. If I had to defend myself i would say that he should pay less attention to pedestrians and more attention to bigger hazards.

I think people should be held accountable for their own actions, if they want to walk and text, it wont impose any real danger to anyone else but them selfs. Making a law like this goes against our freedom.

I do not think this law would pass. The world we live in today is very social, and the state of New York is a very big industrial state, and one of the highest cell phone rates alone is in the state of New York.

this can kill someone!!! I saw someone who is walking on the street only watching his cellphone screen. At night it's too dark so sometimes people in the car can't see other people who is crossing the street especially in rainy days.
It can be very uncomfortable to everyone as we can see in the results of vote. but it will benefit us..

Well if i got caught texting while walking in a place where that isn't allowed I would say to the police man/woman "I know your trying to protect me and everyone around me but did you have to pick me" .Thats certainly what i would say! .

I am in support of this law; Do you know how many people are killed each year because they're texting while walking? Problem is, so many people are absolutly addicted to texting that it won't gain a lot of supprt. I agree that this law should be passed, but that would mean a lot less texting for me!

i think that it is a good law because we all have been guilty of texting while walking and this law is only a pro caution. its the same thing with texting while driving, pedestrian aren't any different. even though its less of harm to people around them alot of times drivers around them aren't paying attention so it's our job as pedestrians to also pay attention.

I believe that that in New York people should not be texting and walking at the same time. While the people in New York don't care because they only care about walking to the subway in the amount of time they have to reach the next stop in the 42nd street. If New Yorkers walk and text there could be a serious problem because problem for instance they might think they are still on the sidewalk and go walking in the street and a terrible car crash just happened because the cab driver's break didn't stop and made a sideways turn leading for the other cars to lead on in a messy crash, the chances are 1 in a million that the fact of that happening anytime soon. But what are the chances of stopping texting and walking at the same time, lets get real it's New York they'll say" forget about it" in the Italian/ New York accent, believe me, me and my family are from there but moved but we still think like one.

    January 26, 2011 at 10:35 pm |

I think this should be a law, I think it should be common sense. New York is a busy place and not being able to hear or see what's going on around you is dangerous. I don't think people should be using electronics anyway but if they do I think someone should definitely do something about it. If I happened to be caught doing this, I would probably just say it's an emergency, because that's the only time I would do it.

Getting ticketed for walking and texting?? That's ridicolous...we should have the freedon to text where and as we please....except for when behind the wheel of a car. That's a whole different story.

I think that crossing the street while texting should be illegal because if you are texting and walking and you are unaware of your surroundings its an accident waiting to happen.

    January 26, 2011 at 11:44 pm |

Even if it was illegal police wouldnt be able to enforce it that well because there would be so many people doing it that they wouldnt be able to stop them all.

    January 26, 2011 at 11:45 pm |
  48. Anissa

Honestly, I think there should be a law. Texting and walking can be just as dangerous as texting and driving. You'd be more focused on what you were saying to someone than where you were going.

  49. Riley

I text in the hallways of my schools all the time while walking, I wouldn't say its fatal, but you could make some wrong turns. Texting on the streets of New York is probably very dangerous, so even though I'm not asking for a ticket, i still agree with this law.

    January 27, 2011 at 12:02 am |

I think it should be enforced as it may decrease the death rates but i hope i will never get caught. If i do i might just that it was an emergency.

This law would be extremely unreasonable. In this century, everyone is very busy and often need to multi-task. It would be like making a law that says you can't listen to the radio while driving because it's "distracting." If this was a law and I got caught, I would defend myself by saying that I'm busy and have a lot of things to do, and not much time to do them in. No one can argue with that because everyone, at some point, has been in that position.

    January 27, 2011 at 12:33 am |
  52. Will

I think that people should have enough common sense to not cross the street while listening to music or texting but apparently they don't so a law might be able to solve the issue but it should be state wide. If laws are passed, places where enforcement should be highest are places with a dense population: New York, LA, etc. I live in a rural area where I don't have to worry about it.

I think that the banned of texting while walking is a good idea because if you are texting and just looking at your phone and not at what is ahead of you then you can endup walking into someone or worst getting hit by a car.

I strongly believe that making a new law like this wouldn’t persuade many citizens, and what will causeーanother problem for the U.S.

    January 27, 2011 at 2:23 am |
  55. Naomi

I don't think that this law is nesscary AT all. The fact that you try to ban electronic devices while walking somewhere is obsured , it's their own personal device granted you must have listening ears and viewing eyes to cross traffic but listening to that new Taylor Swift song has never stopped someone from crossing the street. What else are they going to try to ban? No listening to music in the car? Or better yet stop street consumers from selling hot dogs because they are to greasy?

What an absurd suggestion! Cellphone and Mp3 is for people who is in outside. Then why we have cellphone? Law that doesn't allow possessing cellphone and MP3 is better than it.

  57. Zach

I vote for this law because if people text while walking they usually end up walking into people, busy roads, or poles.

    January 27, 2011 at 5:30 am |
  58. sophia

I think i would have it illegal because it is our fault that we got an accident while walking. For my caculation i think having that for a law is not that great. For example if mr.carl azuz was walking in the streat and playing a game and the police got him even though he didn't get into an accident, he might not like it. Not everyone gets into an accident while they are crossing the road with their ear phones on. I think it is not fair for everyone to not having their electronic devices while they are walking.

    January 27, 2011 at 5:32 am |

The texting and driving is a major deal but coild be txting and walking pedestrians could be to focused on there phone to look both ways to see if a car is coming and the same for a car the driver could be txting and not looking for pedestrians so either someone is going to get hurt and the situation wont be pretty.

    January 27, 2011 at 7:03 am |
  61. Tim

if the pedestrians have head phones in they cant listen for emergency vehicles that alone is a problem

    January 27, 2011 at 7:05 am |
  62. David

It's a nonsense to make it illegal to use electronic device like cell phone or MP3. If we got a emergency call whie we're walking street, we have to stop walking and answer the phone? Although using telephone or MP3 on the street is danger than not. However, we don't need to specify it as ilegal acting. Just campaigning for not using cellphone or listneing to music.

It depends because if you were going to text someone to NOT text that's ok, but if you bring up a subject to text about you may be asking for trouble.

  64. Jamie

I think the law is good thing, its there to protect people and make them more that their lives are more important than a mere text. If I got caught I would just take the ticket knowing that my life is more precious than any message on my phone.

    January 27, 2011 at 7:16 am |
  65. Jenn

I believe this is a good, law... the walking while texting part that is. When i am texting and walking it easily distracts me and I'm not looking up to see where im going. But when i walk with my IPOD in I'm not looking down the whole time so i can see where I'm going. Especially in New York walking while texting could get you seriously hurt. If i got caught walking and texting i would say that i was aware of my surroundings, and i looked up every so often. I believe this law should only be walking while texting, not walking with IPODs. For the fine i think it should start out as $50, but when they keep getting caught, the fine should go up.

    January 27, 2011 at 7:21 am |

It should be illegal for people to walk and text. When poeple text and walk, they walk slower and also have a tendancy to run into things more.

    January 27, 2011 at 7:44 am |
  67. Fred

I think this law is not really necessary. If we were worried that people would not cross the street safely, we should hire more crossing guards. Hiring crossing guards would also help the employment issue. If I got caught texting while walking, I wouldn't argue, but I'd keep in mind that tickets help pay the U.S. debt of 9 trillion dollars.

    January 27, 2011 at 7:48 am |
  68. Ashley

why would anyone give a ticket for texting!? Seriously driving and texting is a bigger problem than this, what else are they going to out law? Radio? I believe this is going to be a waste of time for cops when they can be out stopping crimes such as speeding and robberies, than babysitting people texting and walking.

I think there should not be a law...but it also makes since that it could hurt the person texting/calling while crossing the street. So I think it's both ways...there should not be a law about texting while walking but...they should ask people not to text/call during walking across the street for the safety of the person walking across the street and the safety of the drivers.

People should not have a law against texting and walking down the cross walk. Its the people's fault, for not paying attention. If people choose to they maybe able to live and have a joyful day and rushing to the ER!

    January 27, 2011 at 8:27 am |
  73. Gaia

I think this law should go through because people wouldn't think of the dangers in texting while walking. They could walk right out into traffic! People would understand that if they needed to text someone then they would stop and sit down on a bench. It isn't that hard to do so.

If I got a ticket for texting while walking I wouldn't say anything. I wouldn't even be walk-texting. I don't even text that much but that doesn't mean I don't text. I've never walk-texted and I don't think I ever will because I understand how that could be a safety hazard.

I don't think that texing while walking is a good idea.It incidentally brings us some accidents like bumped by cars or other people. Also,we may distracked and then get lost because we don't focus on our route!

I think that it should be a law against walking and texting because people dosent relize they risk theyre life until something traggic actually happens.

Texting and crossing streets is dangerous sometimes i guess. people should pay attention ? so i guess if its really needed ,a law should be placed

  77. Bryan

I know that I have been walking around the streets and will get a text or call and pull my phone out! this won't stop me from walking around, I think that this law should be in effect for ONLY those people that are crossing a road or highway as it is more unpredictable than the sidewalk. If getting ticketed for walking on the sidewalk my question would be where can we text?

    January 27, 2011 at 8:38 am |

People should NOT be aloud to text and walk. We always need to be aware of their surroundings. When we don't, we are more likely to get robbed or hit by a truck.

    January 27, 2011 at 8:46 am |
  80. Solwoo

Well,, I think itis personal worry for this statement.
You could not texting whilr walking if you are worrying about your health and safefy.
Or you could text if you want to enjoy your phone world!
So, I think it doesn't have to be limited with a law.

I think it should be a law for texting but not for listning to music while walking because texting on the street is like reading on the street, not a good idea, but listing to music is not, and I do it all the time, and never get distracted.

    January 27, 2011 at 8:56 am |

i think it's totally kind of funny thing.
Think about when we talking on the cellphone in the street

i'm gonna cross the street. so i'll call you in 20seconds.

We don't think the law would be effective because no one will take it seriously and it is not as dangerous as using a phone while driving. Has there ever been an accident with a car and a pedestrian texting? We think they should create a hand free texting method, similar to the hand free phone.

    January 27, 2011 at 9:22 am |

I guess the law makes some sense, since the people who get hit aren't just hurting themselves, but also possibly emotionally damaging the person who hit them. Personally, I would never walk across the street while texting, because that would be just plain stupid.

    January 27, 2011 at 9:30 am |
  87. Cathryn

I think that it was rational to make a law of texting while driving but , not walking . That doesn't make sense . Pedestrians don't 'pose a threat to anyone's safe but themselves. It should be their choice whether or not they want to risk their lives or not .

I think there should be because it is dangerous. Also i know how distracted you can get when your playing your DSI. When you are playing it you can completely zone out i do it all the time. You get completely cut off from everything else.

While texting and walking may be a problem, it should not be against the law. Many people want to be "in the loop" 24/7, and being informed should not cost people a hundred dollars.

what i think about this whole texting while walking problem is that doing that is very dangerous. i think people should defenitely get a ticket because a ticket should most likely solve this problem and put an end to texting while walking.

Any electrical advice? So what I can't use my ipod to walk to the bus or walk down the street? I don't have a car, that's all I do is walk.

When I cross the street, I always stop using my phone until I am all the way on the other side of the street. I don't trust the drivers. I have almost been hit a few times by people in there car's not paying attention. This means I have to be especially careful of my surroundings. So by use of common sense I choose to pay attention to where I am walking.

People who don't pay attention are just lacking common sense. The law should look at trying to watch drivers who text. They have a giant killing machine at there hands vs. someone just walking.

I think texting and walking isn't much of a big deal but then again I don't live in the city. If I was to get a ticket for texting and walking I would be a little irate. I would try and argue my way out of it. I could see if the officer gave me a ticket for walking across the street and texting but if I was just on the sidewalk and texting thats a little ridiculous!

    January 27, 2011 at 10:01 am |
  98. john

I Don't think that this should be a law because if they have thier MP3 player down where they can hear stuff around them . then that is fine. they don't need to listen to thier music way up high because they will destroy thier hearing damage. if your are taslking on the phone then just look straight head and look around you. when you come up to the crosswalk look both ways or look at the sign thing.

    January 27, 2011 at 10:02 am |
  99. Taylor

If I was caught texting and walking I would tell the police officer that it was an emergency, like a life or death matter. People should be allowed to text and walk. Its your phone and you should be allowed to do what you want with it. These new laws that are being passed about cell phones are absolutely ridiculous. I understand the laws about texting whikle drving, but ones like these are really uncalled for.

A law about texting while walking! now that is just crazy. I am a person who texts five people while walking to the store, and if the police give me a ticket I will not pay them!Because, that law is just crazy.

I think that they should have it as the law becasue it is safer if you dont text while walking because you can bump into some one and cost their life and someone come up and grab you. I think totally it should be the law.

There should be no law of using a electronic device while walking because we pay taxes and our electronics and now they think they can tell us not to use them.

I think that's the best law they had ever made because there's been lots of accidents because there on there phone and there not paying attention at the street lights and next thing you know they are on the floor asking for help.

I think that people should be more aware of their surroundings and look both ways before crossing like always. Plus if people were smart enough to realize if you listen to music that loud it can give you hearing aids! People listen to me when I tell you this; "TURN THE MUSIC DOWN!!!". Or you can just text, listen to music, while playing a game at the same time and just get hit by a car. 🙂

    January 27, 2011 at 10:55 am |
  122. Lucy

It wouldn't be right not to text or anying while crossing the street. What if someone was late for work and had to use a phone while crossing the street? That wouldn't be really fair.

It's not good enough to protect people from accidents. Maybe there are more people who want to deceive their behavior than to observe the law. If i get caught texting while walking in a restricted area I will say, "oh, i didn't. I just want to know what time it is. "

    January 27, 2011 at 11:19 am |

I , don't think there should be a law agianst walking and texting , talking , and listening too music. Because if they see you crossing the street and they still drive it's there fault for not stoping for a pedestrian regaurdeless too what there doing.

    January 27, 2011 at 11:20 am |
  129. Christina

No there shouldnt be thats stupid you know how many people wlk with electronics , what if its a long distance bussniess call yu have to stop talking because you need to cross a street? Thats abosourtly stupid. You know how people live in New York. The goverment should be working on fixing our economy not about people walking across a road with an iPod in there ear.

  130. victoria

I think it should be a law in busy places like new york. I know people live on thier phones but when ur crossing such busy streets u hav to be careful. I also think it shold only be for texting. becuz if ur on the phone u can say hold on and walk right? and ur ipod shld not count at all. thats just stupid!

    January 27, 2011 at 11:21 am |
  131. Austin

I voted yes it should be a law because if a pedestrian is struck whats the first thing they will say "its the cars fault they should of been paying attention" and thats wrong and passing this law will save people from injury and maby even death so next time you are walking to the store think about it before you pull out your phoe and start getting distracted

I Think we should text. The reasons why is because it's a god way to communicate with family and friends. It's also good for emergency needs. Texting can benefit a good cause because people need to do work on there phone in order to keep there jobs.

    January 27, 2011 at 11:21 am |
  134. jalynn

i tthink it shouldnt be a law because you walk at your own risk but it shouldnt be allowed in school zones because if someone not looking and they have ear phones in and they run into some pre schoolers and they get hurt its not there fault that someone is not looking where there going and listing to music

    January 27, 2011 at 11:22 am |
  135. Nick

I think there should not be a law on texting while walking because it would frustrate business workers on the go. Texting doesn't need to be against the law. It's what people do to stay occupied. It makes sense to ban this because of people being inured or killed. But it will complicate peoples lives.

    January 27, 2011 at 11:22 am |
  136. Mike

I think that there should not be a law against texting while walking, because if theres an emergency and someone tries to reach you through a text then u could look and see it. These people are making it seem like people just walk across the street with out looking. We are not dumb. When I am texting before I walk across the street I look both ways before I start going across. If this law get's passed I will be kinda mad.

    January 27, 2011 at 11:22 am |
  137. Foxx

i think that a law like this would be useless because everyone has the reason to be texting or on the phone, or even using an ipod while crossing the street. a law like this might as well ban cell phones and mp3's all together. as for if i were to get caught texting while crossing the street, i would just simply tell the officer that i was getting directions from a friend.

    January 27, 2011 at 11:23 am |
  138. Nickolas

I do not think there should be a law banning people from texting while walking. This might be a little dangerus, but people should be careful. I do think there should be a law that requires no one to text and drive at the same time. Drivers should watch out for people walking.

    January 27, 2011 at 11:23 am |
  139. Justin

I think that to some degree that it should pass. I have had people run into me at walmart because their phone was a distraction. Carl is right, this could be fatal to the pedestrian. I think that they should allow people to have their phones out, but if caught walking across the street and texting, a fine should be issued, just like proposed. I don't think the fine should be that much though. A good $75 fine would be good.

    January 27, 2011 at 11:23 am |
  140. rachel

Think about the facts, bad to walk and text at the same time. Cause you could get killed or injurded, if your texting on the street/sidewalk. somewhat, it's okay to text and walk. like when your with someone they can tell you when to stop. But if your alone and there is traffic going on, and they probaly won't tell you when to stop. You can't trust everyone.

I agree that walking around busy streets distracted can be a serious hazard, but i disapprove of fining people. While it is a safety risk, they shouldn't have to pay for simply using their own devices. It is at their own discretion that they use them and it is not our place to take away something they might’ve worked hard for.

    January 27, 2011 at 11:25 am |
  143. Bob

No i don't think we should have this law because there is way more important things to take care in this world instead of this. Its the person's choice to text while walking into the streets not the people that make the laws up. Its there fault to get hurt not everybody else, and if they keep doing it they can learn from it and stop. So no i don't think we should have a law on texting while walking.

    January 27, 2011 at 11:26 am |
  144. Jesus

Texting while walking shouldn't be outlawed because if people can't text they will call, and if they can't call, then the world would lose connection to others and the world they live in. Devices such as phones are here for us to get into contact with one another, texting is a good way to get in contact without having to take away from the activity there doing. Just waiting to call, or calling can be defective cause what if the area there in is to loud, or they don't want to talk in front of people. There is a lot of reasons why texting is useful, and if your careful while walking and texting then your good. There is no reason people should be limmited to the use of there devices. If the people in cars are not texting and are careful then everything will be fine.

  145. Clive

I think the idea of banning texting while crossing the street is probably a good idea to keep people safer. I guess if for some reason I was NYC and I got texting while crossing the street, I’d probably say “I’m from small town Nebraska where we ain’t got none of them fancy phones or crosswalks.”

    January 27, 2011 at 11:26 am |
  146. Gabby

I believe there should be a law against texting while walking. Many people say that texting while driving is dangerous, but texting while crossing a street is just as dangerous. Many places have banned texting while driving which will cut out most accidents due to distractions but not all of them. Say a person is texting while crossing a street and walks out right in front of a car because their mind was more wrapped up in their conversation than their safety. The driver in the car may be paying full attention but they still may not be able to stop in time. Another scenario would be if someone crossed the street while texting and slipped on ice or tripped in a pot hole and fell. Again by the time the driver realized they were in the road it would be too late. All in all texting while walking can be extremely dangerous and should be limited.

I think there should not be a ban because honestly it makes no sense. The Senator is so concerned with people texting, that they cant even get our economy together. Really doesn't the Senator have anything better to do with the country accept ban something they don't even know how to do. Half of the members in Politics are above the age are age of about 50, and probably can't even work electronics. So how about we stop worrying about electronic devices that Help Us and try and get our economy together.
    Thank You! 🙂

I think the new law about using your phone while walking is unfair. If I lived in a big city like New York where I walked everywhere I would want the privelege of talking on my phone to my boss, mom, or whoever while going places. Lawmakers should more concerned about citizens talking on their cellphone while DRIVING.

I think that texting and walking is okay, but there are some circumstances that you have to follow. Like if there is a busy street and you are texting while walking, that that's your fault. So if you are walking and texing then you can get injured or killed. One thing I've learned is that you have to be careful with your surroundings.

Yes, there should be a law aginest texting while walking because some people might died by texting while walking there is a news about a lady she was at the mall she was a texting while she was walking, and she fell into a fountain and now she is mad at the mall people.

No, because that is absolutely ridiculous. If someone decides to text while walking well let them do as they please. They will just have to face the consequences of what might happen. Texting while driving is bad and you should have a law for that , but texting while walking. If you are walking and texting you are not going to hurt anyone. So if their was any thought of making a law that says walking while texting is not allowed would be a bit of exaggeration.

    January 27, 2011 at 11:33 am |
  155. Chris

I see both sides of this argument. You obviously should not be texting while walking across the street, it is common sense. Also listening to an ipod or mp3 player could make it so you could not hear the horn of a speeding car. But it should not be $100, thats crazy, make it $20.

    January 27, 2011 at 11:56 am |
  156. JON

People should really put down their phones when they are doing other tasks. It is kind of pathetic that people walk into fountains at the mall, and while walking down the street. Just pay attention and we'll all get along just fine!

    January 27, 2011 at 11:59 am |
  157. Chris

There is no way I would pay a hundred dollar fine! If I want to multi-task, I should be able too. WIth the technology today you are bound to be using one of these devices while "crossing the street".

  162. Chad

I think that giving a ticket for simply crossing a street while listening to your iPod is just plain ridiculous. What is the difference if you are just looking around and not paying attention while you cross the street. If I were to ever be caught for this I would have to say that what are the cops paying attention to if they see me with my phone shouldn’t they be watching the road.

I think if they make this a law people would be paying 100 doller tickets alot. there can be an emergency and you would not know about it because you cant answer your phone.

I can see how they would want to keep people safe, but not that way. Probably a lot of people already owe them money. I don't think that's right, taking money from people that might not have even herd of the new law.

I think it is not a good idea. I think it would irritate a majority of people. Although the idea does have some merit. Using an MP3 player a person wouldn't be able to hear as well and they may be focused too much on the cell phone.

There should be no law for it, but it could be safer if phones were updated with alert so when you don't notice your walking across a street it goes beep beep beep or something and says alert alert alert.

I think someone should get fined more then 100 dollars for using electronic devices while crossing the street. I think this because it is stupid that people would do that kind of thing. also I think that if you are stupid enough to do that you should get fined for it

    January 27, 2011 at 12:36 pm |
  179. collyn

I think this is the supidest thing ive ever heard in my life timee!
we should be able to walk and talk as long as were cordinatedd!

    January 27, 2011 at 12:36 pm |
  180. Cole

it would be the drivers fault if they hit you and you could sue them. if the walk sign comes up you should be able to text or be in the phone its your live live it how you want.

    January 27, 2011 at 12:36 pm |
  181. Elizabeth

I don't think this law should actually be passed because a lot of people could simply forget about it and would be fined. But I definitely think that pedestrians should be made more aware of the danger that arises from using electronic devices while crossing the street.

    January 27, 2011 at 12:36 pm |

i think that the govermnent is more and more trying to control our lives. By making stupid laws that provent you from doing anthing.

    i hate tickets:)

    January 27, 2011 at 12:39 pm |

The only way you can get hurt walking 10 or 20 feet is if you lay down and roll around, besides the red light is on so no one is going to go.

    January 27, 2011 at 12:39 pm |
  185. james

there should not be a law if you get hit by a car its the drivers falt for not honking there horn.

    January 27, 2011 at 12:40 pm |
  186. larry

    i don't like tickets either:)

    January 27, 2011 at 12:41 pm |

No! thats a bad idea, cause if that law gets pass kids will get tickets too.

Look both ways before texting...it's your own business...it is a safe idea but goes too far...could keep people safe but won't really stop the problem...it's your fault if you get hit so why get a ticket for your own fault...is a safe idea but drivers should watch for walkers anyway...it is a dumb idea...

This is TALKED AGAINIST in these admentments
Amendment 4 – Search and Seizure. Ratified 12/15/1791.

Texting and driving should be legal still because if you were to make it illegal it would then make people still be distracted by the radio. I even know people that will eat while driving which is dangerous too. And if there was a law it would make people text in there lap so nobody could see and be more dangerous...

    January 27, 2011 at 12:53 pm |
  191. Ms. Sherrie's Class

No ticketing for texting while walking, but use common sense and look both ways before crossing the street.

    January 27, 2011 at 12:56 pm |
  192. Nick

This shows that the country has no limits on their laws. If they do get hurt it's the peoples fault and if they try to sue the government. Then make a law for that. We have rights and what they are doing is bending the rights to make the truth very flexible. So I dis agree on the law it should be vetoed just like the health care law

    January 27, 2011 at 1:03 pm |
  193. Grace

I think this could be a good law if it saves people's lives. I mean can't you wait a just a few minutes to call someone or text them if it might save your life?

    January 27, 2011 at 1:06 pm |
  194. Zed

When I was 8 I was playing my GameBoy (remember those?) and crossing the street to a restaurant. Thank goodness I didn't get run over, but an oncoming car I didn't see did have to screech to a halt. I'd rather get a ticket than get injured. Better be safe than sorry.

    January 27, 2011 at 1:07 pm |
  195. Shawn

I think that this is a good idea to have in bigger cities, however; I don’t think it is a good idea for smaller towns like mine where there are few people and less drivers. Even still, I highly doubt that this bill will pass, but I have been wrong before!!

    January 27, 2011 at 1:07 pm |
  196. Zeus

The law is a good idea, but one hundred dollars for a ticket is too much. I think it should be, at the, maximum fifty dollars .

    January 27, 2011 at 1:11 pm |
  197. ray

It would be stupid for that law to be legal but if I got cought texting while walking accros the road I wouldnt be able to do anything because its the law.

    January 27, 2011 at 1:26 pm |
  198. Omar

I don't think it should be a law people just need to smarten up and pay attention to whats going on. There are consequences for actions and people should take them as they come.

    January 27, 2011 at 1:26 pm |
  199. teresa

I think it's very serious; but yet people don't tend to think about what they are doing. However, it's a great safety idea. But getting a ticket for texting, listening to an i-pod or such, is a bit blown out of portion. There's something else they can do for this serious problem, verse getting a ticket.

    January 27, 2011 at 1:26 pm |
  200. Anonymous

i don't think there should be a law against texting and walking because we can always look for cars then pass. The cars are supposed to stop for us anyway.
i would defend my self by telling them that people text or chat on the phone while driving even though it's not allowed. We're being safe because we're not causing a problem

    January 27, 2011 at 1:27 pm |
  201. clockwork

i would say hay y is there a car on the side walk then say good bye

    January 27, 2011 at 1:28 pm |
  202. tasha

I dont think that there should not be a law about texting and walking. People need to open there eyes and pay attention to what is going on. If people were smarter when it came to texting, there would not be as many accidents. not all people are dangerous texters.

    January 27, 2011 at 1:29 pm |
  203. masen

I think there should be no law because some people can text and walk. But then you get some people that don't so i honestly think that is there fault.

    January 27, 2011 at 1:29 pm |
  204. brooks

Maybe a law against texting but definetly not talking

    January 27, 2011 at 1:32 pm |

This just proves that there is nothing you can do that won't be come a law, I think that it should not be a law it should just be frowned upon.

    January 27, 2011 at 1:33 pm |
  206. Natasha

I don’t think there should be a law saying that you are not allowed to text in the street. But people should be smart enough to text and then walk across the street.

    January 27, 2011 at 1:33 pm |
  207. Veronika

I dont think it's a great idea to make low like that, but at the same time it's necessary to show people that it's a real problem!

    January 27, 2011 at 1:36 pm |
  208. Brandon

I think ts good because there will be less distractions and accidents. I thinks its bad thing to because if your listening to music and they get a ticket they will probably flip out. And what if somthing is happening to there family are they supose to do, ignore it?

    January 27, 2011 at 1:37 pm |
  209. BrAnDon

People have to listen to music.they can't just take that way form us music is everything. We shouldn't have to get a ticket just because we walk across the street with our ear phones in. It's reatarded

    January 27, 2011 at 1:37 pm |
  210. brianna

O_O no way. if that law passes then, uhhh i'd have a ticket in five minuets! i really dont think its worth the time. i mean you see how many people walk around texting, and chating, why change it now? i understand that it is a little dangerous crossing roads but, i mean really? like say your walking down the street and your phone beeps. you open it up and its you grandma has crashed her car, thats worth the risk of getting a $100 fine. thinks for reading 😀

    January 27, 2011 at 1:38 pm |

There should not be laws against texting/listening and walking. It would be to controlling of the people.

    January 27, 2011 at 1:44 pm |
  212. Colby and Michael

I believe this new propisition is an outrage people who care enough about their safety and or well being will stop on their own. People should be able to text whenever they would like except while driving.

    January 27, 2011 at 1:45 pm |
  213. la-dasha

I think there shoukld be a law because walking while textin may result in a major injury like running into a pole and breaking your nose...

    January 27, 2011 at 1:46 pm |
  214. Rhapsidy

I think that there should not be a law on texting and walking. Has there ever been anyone who has been killed while texting and walking. There is no point in doing it.

    January 27, 2011 at 1:50 pm |
  215. Sam

i think this is proof of a law that doesn't to happen. i understand that its a problem but it could be a "do at your own risk" type of thing. If this becomes a law it will be a waste of time for it to pass

    January 27, 2011 at 1:53 pm |
  216. lindsay

I dont think that texting, Walking Sould Be banded

    January 27, 2011 at 1:54 pm |
  217. Ky

I believe this shoudnt be a law because people are texting while walking at their own risk. They should know the consequences, people shouldnt have to stop because others fail to stay safe.

    January 27, 2011 at 1:59 pm |
  218. Chet'Tona

It would be a great idea because people aren't paying attention like they should, same with driving but come on do you really think this is serious to be passed, beause I don't.

    January 27, 2011 at 2:00 pm |
  219. jeferory

i think they shouldnt put a law about texting and walking because if there texting it shouldnt be our fault if they got hurt or died becasue they were texting and if the driver was texting thats a different story.

    January 27, 2011 at 2:03 pm |

Well i think that its fine to walk and text . People just need to pay attention when they are walking but i think they have takin this way to far. I dont want to get a ticket every time i am walking across the street and i am on the phone doing something!

    January 27, 2011 at 2:04 pm |

I believe that there should be a law against walking and texting. Even I have walked and texted and ran into a pole. It is not very fun, and then I never did it again. I do think that some people are responsible for walking across the street (ect.), and others just probably don't even care. I think that there should be a law... because one day you might pay for it.

    January 27, 2011 at 2:06 pm |

    January 27, 2011 at 2:07 pm |

I think that that would be a stupid law because plenty of people are reely good whith multi tasking and that includes walking and texting.

    January 27, 2011 at 2:07 pm |
  231. joanna

I would say that it is just the way of life.
I think that is just crazy doing that law.
It is just not a good idea.
I hope you don't put that law.
That is al i want to say.

    January 27, 2011 at 2:08 pm |
  232. Maddie

Well I think that people crossing streets should always be careful and pay attention. But a ticket? Really? What is it with this new fascination with giving people tickets and fining them? I think this is a very bad idea. And what would I say? I would ask him if he liked to listen to music and to talk on the phone. And if he would really stop just to listen to music when you’re trying to get somewhere really quickly. That's what I would say.

    January 27, 2011 at 2:09 pm |
  235. l

I think that this is a bad law because i fell when your walking in a cross walk then it should be illegal but then if you are on the side walk they is no way to get hurt. The cars should be stopped for us anyways. This should not be a law.

    January 27, 2011 at 2:09 pm |
  236. bob

I dont think that there should be a law like that because what if some people are good at walking and texting and watching out and they are a very important person then they need thier phone and they are walking. Also what if your kid is in troubel and u cant answer the phone or anything or you'll get a ticket.

    January 27, 2011 at 2:09 pm |
  237. Henry

i think this should be a law only in large cities, where there is lots of traffic. sa for me being caught doing this, i would state i am very attentive when texting and walking

    January 27, 2011 at 2:13 pm |
  238. Chris

I could actually see this in larger cities, but with less of a fine than $100, that is a little too big...there is no way that this would be passed up here in [my state].

    January 27, 2011 at 2:22 pm |
  239. Tyler

I think there should be a law for this. Because texting while walking is clearly a distraction, and should be stopped. Besides, you can always just stop walking and then send your text. Better safe then sorry.

    January 27, 2011 at 2:22 pm |
  240. Mitchell

No one wants a ticket for having head phones in their ears, it's not exactly covering your eyes, and I don't really think you can run some one over while walking. it's not really a health hazard.

    January 27, 2011 at 2:23 pm |
  241. Ali

I don't think they should get a ticket because texting and walking isn't the problem. People are just stupid and don't pay attention.

    January 27, 2011 at 2:30 pm |
  242. Massey's class

I think it would be useless because people would probably still do it anyways. It's dumb the only thing it will do is give the government more money. If you can't walk across the street and use your phone at the same time, you should just stay at home. It's not like policeman will be on the street looking at everyone crossing the street. They should be out stopping real criminals. It shouldn't be a law because it's our turn to walk. It's not our fault if we're clumsy!

WE WILL NOT FOLLOW THIS LAW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    January 27, 2011 at 2:31 pm |
  243. Alex

You should not be fined for texting and walking while crossing the street because it is not the electronic devices that cause people to be oblivious to their surroundings, it is their own fault and they should be fined for being so dumb

    January 27, 2011 at 2:35 pm |
  244. Sarah

I honestly don't think there should be a law against that.. I mean, its Our fault. Its The People's fault. If your not smart enough to stop texting long enough to cross the street, your not very smart. NOt to be rude but I mean come on..

    January 27, 2011 at 2:48 pm |
  245. Rosario

A law against texting? How do you suppose they will tell the difference between calling someone or texting? In the age of touchscreen phones the precision of this law is really what will doom ot.

    January 27, 2011 at 2:54 pm |
  246. alex

i think texting while walking should't be issused a ticket because everyone does.. at work, in school and just because people do it out side in the street should be a problem

i mean yeah i could probably be a safety issuse but it shouldnt be the fault of the person who is texting and walking. it would also be the person that is driving the car to reconize the person thats walking

    January 27, 2011 at 2:57 pm |
  247. jeremy

it may be a good thought but really its the fault of the driver. drivers should keep their eyes on the road to see hazards like pedestrians.

    January 27, 2011 at 2:58 pm |
  248. Ian

I get the safety reasons of the proposal, but putting a law against using electronics while crossing the road with a fine of 100 dollars is taking it to the extreme.

    January 27, 2011 at 3:11 pm |
  249. Lucas

Personally, i disagree, if they look both ways before they cross, it's fine.

    January 27, 2011 at 3:12 pm |
  250. Nathan

I think that this law is not a god thing even though it is still better safe then sorry. But people do this because what if you have to pick up a call or text to someone while walking.

    January 27, 2011 at 3:17 pm |
  251. Andrew

I think that the law should not be permitted because people should have a call for business and people should know that they can walk while the sign says" walk" in the streets. They can be make it to the other side of the streets.

    January 27, 2011 at 3:19 pm |
  252. Guffey

I hate technological advancement as much as the next guy, but are there going to be tickets for everything in the near future? It's already a law that drivers are responsible for their driving, and hitting a pedestrian is the driver's fault. CARS are what are dangerous. Not the little doodads folks put in their ears or glue to their eyes. Issuing tickets for such a thing is just ridiculous.

    January 27, 2011 at 3:22 pm |
  253. Chris

No driving and texting, no walking and texting, whats next. It's not like we can hurt somebody. More laws and more laws, next thing you know we aren't going to be able to listen to the radio. Some laws aren't necessary. What can pssibly happen texting and walking, run into somebody, just say excuse me and move on, no law needed. 🙂

    January 27, 2011 at 3:24 pm |
  254. Josh

I don't think there should be a law against texting while walking because it doesn't hurt anyone to multitask while getting excercise. Also no one will abide this law.

    January 27, 2011 at 3:25 pm |
  255. jacob

I dont think it would be worth it because nobody would abide by that law. Wlking while texting doesnt cause a threat because they wont be able to do that much damage.

    January 27, 2011 at 3:25 pm |
  256. Daniel

I do not think this should become a law. What about people who have those BlueTooth devices? They would not get caught because you cannot tell if there on the phone or listening to music. This would be an unfair law as it would be the persons fault if hurt, not the electronic devices.

    January 27, 2011 at 3:25 pm |
  257. amy

i think this is dumb because it is your choice and what if your talking to your mom and you need to be picked up and yourmom is stuipd and wont call you... text is the awnser to everything!!!

    January 27, 2011 at 3:26 pm |
  258. Jerryka

If people can't text and drive then why take their priviledge of texting and walking. It's not their fault they get ran over it's the driver. Aren't there pedestrian lights that's what they're used for.

    January 27, 2011 at 3:27 pm |
  259. Bob

I am pretty sure that no one is so into texting that they will walk cluelessly into the street. They will probably check if a car is coming or not. If they still get hit, then it is the driver's fault because the drivers should stop and let them walk.

    January 27, 2011 at 3:27 pm |
  260. Gaby

No there should not be a law against walking and texting. If you are walking on a busy street and there's a law, you may get a call or a text that may be important.

    January 27, 2011 at 3:30 pm |
  261. Jarob

No! Thats dumb! Obviously you shouldn't text and drive but texting while walking? Seriously? We seriously can text anywhere! If this is a law i will break it! Drivers should be careful of people walking the street. Why should the pedesitrains be in trouble when its THEIR time to walk and the cars SHOULD be at a stop? This doesn't make sence to me. If everyone thinks these gadgets are such a problem, why do they make them!!!

    January 27, 2011 at 3:37 pm |
  262. riku

Texting and walking shouldn't be banned because the whole world does it even if they don't notice it. Police do it and politicians. Getting a ticket for just texting and walking is stupid because it is just more money the economy gets and I am totally against it. I even do it and yes i might be weird and walk and text should people get a ticket for texting their girl friend, boyfriend, husband, wife, brother, sister, and so on.

    January 27, 2011 at 3:39 pm |
  263. Jaryel

Whoever said yes must be crazy. I mean crossing the street is dangerous but some people can watch a movie, while texting, and talking to their friend. If you ask what the three conversations were about they'll tell you. Do you serously need to put a ticket for texting and walking? The government just needs to worry about bigger problems.

    January 27, 2011 at 3:40 pm |
  264. Haley

they cant give people tickets while walking, because it doesnt make sense. Ar you really going to make people
stop walking just to text, it could be something important.

    January 27, 2011 at 3:45 pm |
  265. Yvette

well you have to think what if you were playing your nintendo and you had to get home so you looked both ways and just held it and a cop says you have to pay $100, its not like you get that kind of money for allowence.

    January 27, 2011 at 3:51 pm |
  266. Taylor

I think that a $100 fine is a little much for calling someone when walking. Puls if it is a emergency then you have to. I understand texting because you are looking down and not paying attention.

    January 27, 2011 at 3:52 pm |
  267. Rihanna

I disagree that it shouldn't be a law because they need to understand that things happen. Instead of it becoming a law, you should just create a video about being careful on the streets. And every school needs to watch it so all the students can be aware of what can happen. I think you should do that instead, because if it's a law then alot of people are going to get a ticket because they are already use to have ipods and cell phones crossing the streets. people will forget that law.

    January 27, 2011 at 3:52 pm |
  268. sunshine

I think there should be a law because those stupid pedestrians should not text while walking.I think there should only be a law in New York.

i think the law is a stupid law because how you suppose to use your phone

Where is the justice in this law. You are just going to make people furious. Why should we pay $100,000 just for talking to you're friends or discousing global crisis. But then again, youe could get in a dangerous accident. This law is very unlawful. But if it isn't, somebody could get hurt.

No, because it may not be the safest thing to do, but it's not worth getting a ticket for doing. you should be ticketed for talking on the cell phone also, because it can be just as distracting.

i think there shouldn't be a law against maybe they should just warn them if there not paying attention

    January 27, 2011 at 3:55 pm |

No, because police should be more occupoed with more serious crimes, than walking and texting.

It is true look both ways before walking it may be for the best, trust your brain, it's telling you to stop texting!

    January 27, 2011 at 3:57 pm |

I don't think they should have that law because bad things don't really happen when people are walking across the street on a cross walk. Plus if somethimg bad does happen it would be the person driving the cars fault beause they might be the one texting while driving.

    January 27, 2011 at 4:00 pm |
  280. Ashtin

Being fined for texting while walking is not practical. If a person wishes to text and walk they should be able to do so at thier own risk. Texting while walking is a lot less harmful than texting while driving. This is a growing problem in our culture that needs closer attention.

    January 27, 2011 at 4:01 pm |
  281. josiah

There should not be a law because what if your in a confrence over the phone and a cop will give you a ticket just for talking over the phone.

i think that it is stupid to ban the texting law while walking because the drivers should be watching the road

    January 27, 2011 at 4:04 pm |
  284. Kelsey

Fining a person for texting while walking seems rather unreasonable. Many accidents occur every day that do not involve distracting devices and it is the responsibility of the pedestrian to pay attention to their surroundings. Although texting while driving is a serious concern, texting while walking seems petty and unmanageable for the government (local or state) to implement.

    January 27, 2011 at 4:05 pm |
  285. Sam

People should take precaution on their own. Adults should know better then to be distracted. There should be a law against it, but the fine shouldn't be so high in this economy.

  286. dalton

i think there should be a law because people can get hurt texting and walking

    January 27, 2011 at 4:10 pm |
  287. Lily

I think this is a fair law. For example if you are texting or using any media related device you could get seriously injured by not looking while you are walking. If you are outside of home, it's probobly for a reason and unless that reason isn't using media then you should be using that time as a chance to get away from all that social time you get at home on media devices.

    January 27, 2011 at 4:13 pm |
  288. Raquel

I think it is a good idea to have a law that says you can't cross the street while text on your phone, because I think it will prevent a lot of accidents. I would rather put down my phone for 20 seconds then pay the 100 dollar fine or get hurt.

    January 27, 2011 at 4:16 pm |
  289. Sam

Yes, i do agree texting while walking is dangerous, but there is a new app on iphones or android phones that shows the camera in the background while you text, so you can see where you are walking while you text. It is a safer and cooler way to text and walk!

    January 27, 2011 at 4:21 pm |
  290. Dominik

I think that it should be a law since that a person that is walking down a street and crossing should be looking in both directions since that is what we were tought when people are like five

    January 27, 2011 at 4:24 pm |
  291. Jake

Having a law against texting and walking is ridiculous of course but on the other hand, it could help prevent law suits from people who don't pay attention and may be injured by a motor vehicle.

    January 27, 2011 at 4:27 pm |
  292. Kate

Hi all! I think that texting while walking, is just as dangerous as texting while driving. Because say you're walking across the street in the city and the sign doesn't say to go but you arent paying any attention so the car comes and runs you over. Also the city is very busy so you never know what kind of accident could happen. But also I don't agree with the city making that a law, because people should have the right to listen to thier MP3 player or ipod while walking around the city so I say I am on both sides.

    January 27, 2011 at 4:31 pm |
  293. Karen

They don't enforce the texting and driving rule, would they enforce the texting and walking rule?

    January 27, 2011 at 4:31 pm |
  294. Josiah

I think that they shouldn't take away electronics from pedestrians because if a car hits you it's not your fault but there should be caution while texting when walking.

    January 27, 2011 at 4:32 pm |
  295. Kendall

I agree with this law completely, i mean, getting a ticket is way less of a big deal than getting hurt. People should learn to appreciate their lives more than the appreciate their electronics. Nobody likes tickets, i agree, but your safety is a bigger deal than anything.

I think that the government shouldnt have the abilty to change what people do its what we do its life a way of life sure someone will get hurn but the human population rate is growing just like the unemploment rate and to everyone else its not fair

    January 27, 2011 at 4:34 pm |
  297. Zoe

I think that it's a good idea to ban it, because it's meant to keep us safe. However, I think that it is the driver that should pay more attention to the road, because they're the ones that are going to hit them anyway, so it's not really the texter's fault as much as the driver's.

    January 27, 2011 at 4:35 pm |
  298. Alexa

There sould be a law against texting because anything can happen like if you are walking near water you could fall in.

    January 27, 2011 at 4:38 pm |
  299. Brittany

I think that people are smart enought to know to look out where they are going and we do not need a low to tell us that . I also think that they are only trying to lower the death rate of humans, and is trying to make the community a better place, but we do not need a law to make sure of that!!

    January 27, 2011 at 4:38 pm |
  300. Melissa

If someone has enough responsibility to own a cell phone or any other device, they should have enough responsibility to pay attention to their surroundings. It won’t prevent anyone from walking and texting, maybe just when someone is watching.

    January 27, 2011 at 4:40 pm |
  301. Megan

This is so stupid! Would if you have to take a very important phone call? What are you supposed to do, hang up in between streets?

    January 27, 2011 at 4:41 pm |
  302. Tessa

When I walk to school I walk by myself so once and a while I text while walking. I dont text while crossing the street thats very dangerous! I dont know any people that would do that. It should not be ticketed. It would not matter to kids the parents would have to pay it not the kid.

It's in New York... I went to New York over this past summer in 2010 and there were so many people text and walking when they would cross the streets adn one almost got hit by a car!
I think in places like NYC this is the perfect way to keep people safe.
Its about crossing the streets not on the side walk. And if you havent noticed people in NYC are the most pleasing drivers they wanna get where the need to go on time you texting and being distracted is not part of there day plan.

This is crazy! Why would they give you a ticket for walking and texting?! Pedestrians don't pose as much of a threat as cars do so I don't see what the problem is with texting and walking. On top of all this, the fine is $100?! I would not pay that much...

    January 27, 2011 at 4:47 pm |

    January 27, 2011 at 4:48 pm |
  308. Samantha

Get a ticket for texting? OUTRAGIOUS! It might be really hard not to sometimes and might be really hard adapting to new things. Also, with the economy so bad most people wouldn't be able to afford a ticket!

    January 27, 2011 at 4:48 pm |
  309. Alexis

If we got tickets for texting and talking and things of that sort, then what would be the point of having our cellphones, to only use at home, when were out of the house most of the day anyways? Or what about our ipods? Do they think that we should only listen to them while we're at home, when we can just turn on the radio? It really just matters that all the drivers are watching the roads, because we already have a law against texting and listening to ipods while driving.

    January 27, 2011 at 4:49 pm |
  310. Marissa

I think it would be a good idea, because it helps make you and everyone around you safe, except their are way too many people and phones and not enough people to stop them, so I believe it would be ignored, or worse, people would get angry if they got caught.

    January 27, 2011 at 4:50 pm |
  311. Sarah

I believe that there shouldn’t be a law against texting some people are careful about this others aren’t. What if a person got a text message the automatic response is to check it what if it’s an emergency?? There supposed to wait till they get to their destination till they can see it? I don’t agree with this at all!

    January 27, 2011 at 4:50 pm |
  312. LUCAS

Hi, Carl Azuz I think it is wrong to aresst people just when there texting while walking. But 1 thing I agree on is that its not safe and they could get hit by a car so that is all i have for now. Wait one more thing when you text when walking they should look both ways then cross because as like I said before aslong as their safe then the police dont have to give them a ticket.

    January 27, 2011 at 4:51 pm |
  313. olivia

First off, if you make this a law 99.9% of people wont follow it so its just stupid! I see the safety issue with it but theres other way to get around it. Mabey we can do more public adds like the texting and driving commercail now we can do it with the texting and walking theres many options we can choose from other then tickets.

    January 27, 2011 at 4:51 pm |
  314. Felix

It is a good idea for no texting but with an I-Pod or other MP3 player you should not get a ticket. Think about it like this: if your texting you can't see around you and might norr hear due to the distration, but with an I-Pod you can still see and if you turn it down enough you can hear around you.

    January 27, 2011 at 4:51 pm |
  315. Harjyot

I think it's a brilliant idea! So many people lose focus whil texting or playing with a device. If you were walking and texting you could bump into someone and make them fall or get them injured. Don't do it make a difference. How would you feel if you were one of the people who got injured by someone who was texting. pretty mad.

    January 27, 2011 at 4:56 pm |
  316. Macey

People should have enough common sense to not text and walk across the street. The law should not have to get involved. If people want to endanger their lives for a call or text, then so be it.

    January 27, 2011 at 4:58 pm |
  317. Kendall

I don't think it should be a allowed to text while walking. Because people can get hurt from tripping or bumping in to someone. Also you could get hit by a car if you are walking across the street.

Electronics these days have been very high tec and everyone has them. Many occurring problems have happened sence our streak of invetions and most have alot of problems. I agree and think that this is a good idea because image the damage and injury of a addictded driver and padestrain. This may limit car crashes. I think that if it's important call or message that the pedestrian can wait, or do it on the other side of the road.

    January 27, 2011 at 5:10 pm |
  319. Gabriella

    Yes,
I think there should be a law about texting while walking, because when your crossing the street you can get in a car actsadint or when your walking and not looking you can trip or fall and hurt yourself. I think we should lay off the technology, I mean come on technology is some peoples lifes. We should spend more time watching out, spending more time with your famliy, and putting more time in inportant things.

The world is revolving around electronics. Cell phones, IPods, laptops, wii, and so much more. Safety has become lost from the minds of people who live in the 21st century and we need to bring it back. Death isn't anything better than replying to a friend after you cross the street or replying before you cross. Us as kids who are growing up in the electronic age don't get the fact that they could get hurt and all the laws they are making are for your safety and help, not to make you give up your electronic device.

If pedestrians are texting while crossing a busy street and get hit by cars, its kind of the pedestrian's fault because they got distracted and weren't paying attention on what's going on in their surroundings.

I believe that this should be a law because if you are walking while texting and and the red lights change you could be run over and even if you do it the first time I would just let them know it is not safe to text while walking and give them a heads up and if they keep doing it then give them a ticket.

    January 27, 2011 at 5:52 pm |
  333. Theresa

I think this wouldn't be a good law. People just need to be careful and look around at their surroundings. I think if you text, talk or listen to music while you walk that is fine just make sure every few seconds you look up and make sure no cars are coming. If people actually take two seconds to look up from their phone it would be fine. I don't think people should be fined for texting, talking or listening to music while walking if so what's the point of having these mobile devices any way.

    January 27, 2011 at 5:52 pm |

i think there should be a law. Because lot of people

What i would say to defend myself is: " Well, Even if i was texting while walking, my freind gets annoyed easily if i dont text her often. I know that's no excuse, but really. If someone was texting while walking and they got ran over it's THEIR fault AND the drivers fault!! Not MY fault!!!!!!".

There should be a law that states you cannot walk and text. It is an unsafe thing to do, especially when walking near busier roads where there could be trouble. Texting distracts people and can make lose focus of their surroundings. Who knows what might happen when you don't watch where your going.

People who are texting while walking into the streets should get a ticket because they don't know that every body in the car is paying attention to the road because THEY might be texting!! When you get the into the street pay attention because anything can cross those white lines.

    January 27, 2011 at 6:12 pm |
  343. Tommy

I think that this would be a good law because pedestrians are most likely to not be watching when they cross the street when they are texting, and they could get hit by cars. We all think, "Oh, this couldn't happen to me," but who knows? You could be the next one that gets hit. I mean, yeah, we've all done this, or something like it, but it couldn't hurt to have a little extra safety, now could it?

    January 27, 2011 at 6:12 pm |
  344. Sam

I think it wouldn't be very fair to make people who are using electronics because a lot of people like listening to music while they're out and about, and to get a ticket for listening to music while crossing the street would be unfair to that person.

    January 27, 2011 at 6:16 pm |
  345. Tommy

I mean, yeah, there could be some good sides to not having that law, but there are also some disastrous downsides, including injury and even death! If I were caught breaking this law, I probably wouldn't or couldn't defend myself. I would have known that the consequences could have been serious, and it would have been a huge safety hazard. This would be a good law to put in place.

    January 27, 2011 at 6:17 pm |

I think that getting fined for crossing the street would not enforce anything. If I were fined for texting or on the phone and walking I would be extremely mad if a police came and gave me a ticket.

they don't need to ban it people should just be a little more careful while texting and where they are texting.

    January 27, 2011 at 6:18 pm |
  348. Brett

I think there should be a ticket because if there isn't we can have multiple deaths because people do not see their surroundings so they can have fatal damage.

    January 27, 2011 at 6:21 pm |
  349. Kody

I don't see the point of making this a law. When pedestrains text while crossing a street, they aren't putting anyone in danger but themselves. It's not like somebody texing while driving where the put both themselves and others at danger. I say it's their choice, and if they choose to put themselves in danger, so be it. An injury from that would be nobody's fault but their own.

    January 27, 2011 at 6:21 pm |
  350. Katie

I think they shouldn't make it a law.. Because if anything happened to us, it'd be our fault, not our phone/ipod etc. WE pay for our cellphones/ipods.. not the government, i don't think they have the right to make it a law. If they want to make it a law so bad, they could like ban them. I honestly think this is a really stupid idea.

it'll be little hard if i cannot cross the street without even my mobile, though my mom says somthing about 'dangerous on the street'.
so, i'm not using (at least) earphones on the street......
anyway, i think we could need that law, but fine is little to much for it..

    January 27, 2011 at 6:39 pm |
  358. Brandon

Why would they give a ticket to people WALKING and texting? I see the logic when it comes to driving and texting because your putting other people in danger, but the most damage you could do while WALKING and texting is you could step on somones foot. With the wole part where you could get hit by a vehicle most big cities like New York they have indicators that tell you when and when not to walk so as long as you follow those indicators people should refrain from being hit even when texting and walking.

    January 27, 2011 at 6:39 pm |
  359. Emily

I have to go both ways with this one mainly because i've almost been hit by a car because i was texting and there only trying to make this law for our own safety but on the other hand i love texting whenever i get the chance. and what i think is really crazy is not letting us listen to our music while were walking we can still see music isn't blocking our eyes.

    January 27, 2011 at 6:40 pm |
  360. Nykeria

I could see that in large cities, but where i live that shouldn't be a problem and the $100 fine is to much money.i mean the drivers should be able to stop if they see a pedestrian texting and walking across the street and if they don't the driver might be texting and now that is a problem.

    January 27, 2011 at 6:42 pm |
  361. Matthew

I do not think that this law is a very good idea because it is your fault if you are not paying attention while walking. Although it does pose a threat it is your choice that you are making and if they take away our choice they take away our freedom to make our own decisions.

    January 27, 2011 at 6:42 pm |
  362. CoraBeth

I think that texting and crossing a street is very dangerous because most people tend to block everything else out. If they didn't enforce that and people continued to do this, it will lead to careless injuries on the pedestrians part.

    January 27, 2011 at 6:44 pm |
  363. Mandy

I understand why some think there should be a law against it, but I don't think it'd stop them anyway. It would waste the police department's time trying to track everyone down for tickets, when people probably won't follow it anyway. Maybe it should be enforced if something fatal almost happened, but otherwise, it is safe as long as the texter is watching they're surroundings.

It shouldn't be a law about texting and walking , but there should just be a law about texting and waking in certain areas . Lot's of people text and walk , mostly teens so i think that if this was to become a law it wouuld just be broken and noone would actually follow that law .

    January 27, 2011 at 6:48 pm |
  365. chris

I think that people should not be fined when using electronics while crossing the streets. Instead, they should put sings saying "walk with electronics at your own risk". If I was caught I would say "I bet you have done it before too so you should turn yourself in".

    January 27, 2011 at 6:54 pm |
  366. Mitchell

I don't think they should make this a law. I mean when people cross the street they should have enough common sense to look both ways before they do, even when they're texting.

    January 27, 2011 at 6:54 pm |
  367. Caitlin

I don't think that it is a good idea. Who is going to have to pay the fine? Our parents. I think that maybe you should just get a warning and have your parents get called so they are aware of the situation.

    January 27, 2011 at 7:05 pm |
  368. Chelly

I dont think texting while walking should be against the law. If you were walking across the street it would be a driver's responsibility to stop.

I think this is super silly it should be a persons own choice i feel like the goverment and law are just gettin more into power hungrie and are personal life and besides its just dumb i mean they do it to

    January 27, 2011 at 7:20 pm |
  370. Francisca

I think there should only be a ticket for when you cross the street. But other than that i should be fine. The worst thing you could do is run into something!

    January 27, 2011 at 7:21 pm |
  371. Nolan

I think they should not make a law on no electronics crossing the street, because if I want to listen to my ipod or talking on a phone, I can see whats going on.

    January 27, 2011 at 7:22 pm |
  372. Nick

I believe that people should not be ticketed for texting and walking. However, if they are to get hit by a car, then the texter should be ticketed because they are a traffic interference.

    January 27, 2011 at 7:22 pm |
  373. josephine

I think that is a bad law.Because if you are listening to music it wont be hard to not notice something. But a phone can be bad because sometimes it can makeseeing other things difficult.

    January 27, 2011 at 7:22 pm |
  374. Ben

i am all for this law except for the music factor. I think that it is fine for people to listen to music because their eyes are still alert. It is just their ears that aren't. texting is not good because both your eyes and mind are on your message, totally zoning u out of the civilized world.

Uncle Sam does not need to baby sit every citizen. What next... outlaw toys in happy meals because it is bad for us........ ohh wait.... their already trying to do this... my bad

  376. Rebekah

I think it's not good to be texting while you are crossing the street, but there should not be a law to texting pedestrians.

    January 27, 2011 at 7:28 pm |
  377. Natasha

This seems like a good idea, but I believe there's another way. Some people should watching where they go, but it isn't as dangourous as other things you would get fined, like driving after drinking. Maybe our government could find another way, because its unfair if that person isn't even 18 yet. It's not just the pedestrians, it's the drivers. Thety should also watch the road.

    January 27, 2011 at 7:30 pm |
  378. Kevin

I think it's ok if you text while walking as long as you look both ways before you cross. Its that simple if people would just do it. It shoudn't be a big problem at all.

    January 27, 2011 at 7:34 pm |
  379. Kayley

True, it may cause distraction, but getting a ticket is not worth it.

I don't think so, i just think that people can walk across the street with out texting then after they get over the road they can text if they want to.

    January 27, 2011 at 7:43 pm |
  383. Spencer

Why would anyone have to get a ticket for just texting? Even if texting and driving is a Big Deal that does not mean texting and walk should be.

    January 27, 2011 at 7:47 pm |
  384. katy

i think there shele be a law about it becase you can get ranover

    January 27, 2011 at 7:49 pm |
  385. Sophia

I think that there is some purpose to this law, but it is also not the best idea. I think that some people get hurt from walking and texting and if they aren't paying attention well then that is their own fault, but it woudl also be the driver's fault for hitting them. Whenever I walk my dog I listen to my iPod and sometimes text, but I always look both ways before crossing a street. Most moms weren't telling a fallacy when they told their kids to look both ways. There is truth behind it. If I had to say yes or no to this law I would say no. I would just say people should be more careful when they cross the street and drivers should watch where they are going.

    January 27, 2011 at 7:53 pm |

i think that there should be a law beacause if u are waiking across the parking lot and your texting you could get hit

    January 27, 2011 at 7:55 pm |
  387. Madison

Its unfair to get a ticket when you are just watching. Walkers have the right away, and if they get a ticket for showing their rights, do we have any?

    January 27, 2011 at 7:55 pm |
  388. julianna

hi I think it is a bad idea to walk and tex at the same time because you could get a ticket and you could get hit by a car or fall in to a fountain or get severally hurt so it shoud be a law that you shoud not walk and tex at the same time

    January 27, 2011 at 7:57 pm |
  389. Sydney

I think its a great idea. i ran into a parked car because i was too busy texting one of my friends. it can prevent future accidents and injuries.

    January 27, 2011 at 7:58 pm |
  390. Katiee

You shouldnt get a ticket for walking. The driver should be watching the road, and sometimes calls are important. They could be conferance calls for work. Some are really important

    January 27, 2011 at 7:59 pm |
  391. molly

i think you should be able to text or talk on the phone while crossing the streets because,on iphones you could have the directions and the map so you can find a place. This is a good and bad thing because you might be on the phone for a very good reason and if you do give tickets it causes noone getting hurt or killed. im very impressed that someone came up with this idea, but all people have done it before and nothing happend. Why are people choosing to start a new law now?

    January 27, 2011 at 8:04 pm |

i think that tis is not a good law to put because what in you get out of school and you tell your parents to pick you up and if a person see`s you you will tan get a ticke .THIS IS SUCH A BAD LAW!!!!!

    January 27, 2011 at 8:12 pm |
  394. Brandon

Are your kidding me. I know walking while texting is dangerous, but getting fine for $100. I would even get fine for $20. $100 CRAZY!

    January 27, 2011 at 8:18 pm |
  395. Christina

I think it is a good idea, drivers sometimes don't see if there are people coming and the pedestrians need to be aware of their surroundings.

    January 27, 2011 at 8:25 pm |
  396. Alex

Getting a ticket for texting and walking across the street is a rely stupid law. I mean people with phones are so use to texting and walking it's only going to make matters in the econemy worse. People will probably not be able to pay a hundred dollors so then they'll go to jail and when they apply for a job they won't be accepted most likely because they went to jail. But that is only my thoughts on it.

    January 27, 2011 at 8:27 pm |
  397. Hannah

If we weren't aloud to use electronic devices while walking OR driving , then where would we need to use mobile devices at ? Most people use there cell phones in the car & while walking.

    January 27, 2011 at 8:33 pm |
  398. Katia

If you think about it, what do we become distracted by the most? the answer is, technology. It's everywhere you look. People could get hurt if they are playing games like Zombie Farm on their iPod, or listening to Usher on their MP3, and not paying attention while crossing the streets.

    January 27, 2011 at 8:43 pm |
  399. Dallas

I think it should be illegal because, kids listen to ipods, mp3 players, etc. and it blocks the noise of the street so they don't pay attention and it could lead to serious accidents.

    January 27, 2011 at 8:51 pm |
  400. Mackenzie

I think it would help keep pedestrians safe by making a law against walking acroos a busy street while texting, but only walking across a buzy street. If it is against anything else then people are even more likely to not follow it. Also, the fines shouldn't be to expensive.

    January 27, 2011 at 8:53 pm |
  401. Madison

When your crossing the streets while talking or listing to music, I don't see why there should be a law against that. But if your texting while crossing the street, I can understand that. But then again, with the "new and improve technolegy" you can speak a text.

    January 27, 2011 at 9:04 pm |
  402. Patrina

Giving a ticket to a person that is just WALKING is really idiotic. If it was driving them it would be a completely different story.

    January 27, 2011 at 9:04 pm |
  403. Autumn

In my opinion is that Texting while walking is clearly a distraction, and should be stopped. Besides, you can always just stop walking and then send your text or hang up your call. Better safe then sorry!!!

    January 27, 2011 at 9:05 pm |
  404. Kallie

No way that is not right to get a ticket for texting while walking. What if that were you and it was important like trying to find where to go. It would be thew drivers fault cause they arent watching the road carfully enough if they run his/her over.

    January 27, 2011 at 9:09 pm |
  405. jason

I would try to run away and not try to get caught while I go to a taxi.Another way would be to defend my self with my hat.

    January 27, 2011 at 9:11 pm |
  406. Erica

I would just tell them it was very important text or tell them what ever I was doing was important. Then if that didn't get them then I would just pay the 100 dollers.

    January 27, 2011 at 9:12 pm |
  407. Dawson

I dont see how that would make a hole lot a sense. Its the driver's falt. If a car came at you at you at 25mph you cant run away wither your on a phone or not.

    January 27, 2011 at 9:13 pm |
  408. Marcos

I think those tickets are a bad idea because it takes away are rights. There not harming every body.

    January 27, 2011 at 9:15 pm |
  409. perry

i dont think it should be a law...because its the persons responsibility to watch where they are going common sense tells you to look both ways when you cross the street if there was a law that was passed it would be to hard to enforce it why go through all the trouble when its something so small

    January 27, 2011 at 9:18 pm |
  410. Troy

I think it's a good idea. Many people are injured every year because of people not paying attention to traffic because they are too busy paying attention to their cell phones, E books, and I pads. As long as it will keep people from getting into serious danger, I'm all for it.

    January 27, 2011 at 9:19 pm |
  411. Tyanna

If that becomes a law I'd be arrested for my whole life!

    January 27, 2011 at 9:23 pm |
  412. kevin

you should not texting and calling while you are crossing at the street because if somebody didn't the stop sign and you texting in your phone maybe you getting accident. But its better to funish them to!

    January 27, 2011 at 9:23 pm |
  413. Lara

It is a safe idea, but a stupid one. People should look both ways before crossing the road, it should be an automatic reaction considering we grew up with our parents holding our hands as we cross the road telling us to look left and right. Drivers should look out for pedestrians anyway.

    January 27, 2011 at 9:27 pm |
  414. Gonzalez

i think texting while walking is not bad but why should they give you a ticket? The law is wrong.

    January 27, 2011 at 9:27 pm |
  415. Kelsey

Well if you think about it is it just the government trying to keep you safe but in the other hand it shouldnt be the government who is controlling the way you txt.

    January 27, 2011 at 9:28 pm |
  416. Kelsey

Txting and driving is one thing but txting and walking is just another way for the government to take control of our txting

    January 27, 2011 at 9:33 pm |
  417. Aaiz

I agree with this rule because texting while crossing the road is extremely dangerous. People can get easily distracted because they are paying more attention to the phone more than the road.

    January 27, 2011 at 9:34 pm |
  418. yubin

It is a fairly dumb law because what harm does it do? The drivers are the one who has to be careful

    January 27, 2011 at 9:39 pm |
  419. Lindsey

I think that there shouldn't be a law against it because the screen is small so you can still see things around it while your walking.

    January 27, 2011 at 9:45 pm |
  420. Emil

i think its fair because they can get distracted and severely hurt themselves but if the driver tried to turn around and not hit the pedestian they might swerve and hurt themselves all because of the pedestrian.

    January 27, 2011 at 9:47 pm |
  421. Kayla

I think it's great, to an extent though. Yes, it is VERY dangerous to cross and text- I've been guilty and have almost gotten myself in a sticky situation. Being distracted in the middle of the road, whether it's busy or absolutely no cars, is dangerous.

    January 27, 2011 at 9:50 pm |
  422. Kaylee

Personally i don't think it's a good idea because texting while driving makes sense because you can crash. The worst that can happen when texting while walking is you can bump into someone. I do agree with not texting while crossing the street because you can get hit by a car.

    January 27, 2011 at 9:52 pm |
  423. Niki

I think the people who walk and are occupyed on their phone at the same time should learn the hard way. Giving pedestrians a ticket could be one way to teach them to always be aware of their surroundings. Also, I think this policy should only follow thrrough in high- populated cities because of the higher chance of being hit by a car.

    January 27, 2011 at 9:57 pm |
  427. Andrew

No I don't think that should be a law. People are smart enough to pay attention. If the person in the crosswalk is texing and the driver is it should be the driver's fault because he shouldn't be texing while driving. And everyone listens to music. This bill is just a excuse for getting more money. And if it does become a law,it should not be $100 dollars, it should be like $25 dollars.

    January 27, 2011 at 9:58 pm |
  428. Lexiee

Since texting while driving is illegal, it will make the drivers more aware of pedestrians. Leaving no point for there to be a ban on texting while walking. I think they should leave it be, but raise awareness of the dangers of crossing streets while paying attention to your phone.

    January 27, 2011 at 9:59 pm |
  429. Lindsey

I don't think it should be a law because if people aren't paying attencion while crossing the road and they get hurt it is their own fault. pluss the police have enough to worry about instead of watching out for texters crossing the road!

    January 27, 2011 at 10:00 pm |
  430. kierra

i honestly dont think there should be a band on texting because if they are gonna band it they should know that about 50% of americans will follow, but at the same time they should make the law since more americans are getting hurt over the years. Well i should know when i was 8 my mom got us in a car accident because SHE was texting so ya. i think they should spend more time on the economic situation in the U.S.A then texting

    January 27, 2011 at 10:00 pm |
  431. Corinne

I think as long as you know when to cross, the only problem with texting while walking in New York is that you will run into people! Generally, when listening to music or calling someone, you are still looking up. I think it is unfair to ticket someone when they could easily solve the problem themselves. surely when many people yell at you for bumping into them or worse, you would get the idea that texting and walking is a bad combination, right?

    January 27, 2011 at 10:02 pm |
  432. Alec

I think this should be a law ,texting and walking in those big cities, could be very dangerous with cars whizzing past at the walk ways.

    January 27, 2011 at 10:17 pm |
  433. Shy

I think that it is a good law because you could get hit if someone were not paying attention and pull out and hit you.

    January 27, 2011 at 10:20 pm |
  434. Tevin

I feel that texting and walking can in fact be a dangerous thing. but i don't think that there should be a LAW against it. i don't encourage to text and walk but there shouldn't be a law against it.

    January 27, 2011 at 10:29 pm |
  435. Jazmine

I don't think a law would be nessacary. If I was on the street with an electronic device I would not think it fair it recieve a ticket. I beleive that because this is an issue they should raise more awarness in people using their intrests for their spefic age, for example, if I were 14 you you post it say on facebook and get an awareness account or if you're 50 you would maybe want to get a flyer when you vote.

    January 27, 2011 at 10:31 pm |
  436. Ashley

It shouldnt become illegal. People just need to pay more attention to where they're going and what's going on around them.

    January 27, 2011 at 10:45 pm |
  437. Andre

i don't think you should get a ticket for texting and walking because people are really at risk for serious injury. if drivers aren't paying attention, that's their fault. if someone runs into a pole while texting, they don't deserve a ticket

    January 27, 2011 at 10:47 pm |
  438. Alex

I think yes, because people can get killed. They don't look left or right. There might be a car rushing through the traffic and might not see you and you won't see it. A lot of people can get hurt that way.

    January 27, 2011 at 10:53 pm |
  439. Jack

Well of course I would defend myself! I would be very annoyed if I was listening to my iPod and I got a ticket while on my way to school or just walking around. It passes the time nicely. Although I do see the frustration of the drivers, I don't think it should be ILLEGAL!

    January 27, 2011 at 10:53 pm |
  440. Trisha

I don't think that there should be a law for that because I text when I walk sometimes, but I can see where I'm going. I text with one hand. Maybe there should be phones that start beeping when you are about to bumb into something. Drivers should be looking in all directions when they are driving. Pedestrians should watch out, too. If they choose to text and walk, then it's their fault. They shouldn't be given a ticket. WARNING TO EVERYBODY: DON"T TEXT WHILE WALKING & WATCH WHERE YOU ARE DRIVING!

    January 27, 2011 at 10:57 pm |
  441. Sandra

no this is so dumb i think that people should be able to text listen to music any time they want i know that i listen to music and text when walking and i have no trubles seeing or hearing i just turn it down and glance every now and then

the person texting would be so distracted they possibly would walk right in front of a car.

    January 27, 2011 at 11:06 pm |
  444. Matt

I don't think that it should not be illegal. I think the person texting, talking, or listening to music should care for themselves and pay attention to what they are doing. the only reason it should be illegal is if that person is being a public nuisance to the other pedestrians and especially drivers.

    January 27, 2011 at 11:07 pm |
  445. Amanda

I dont think think they should have a law about if people can walk and text or talk at the same time.Only because i think when i see people on the streets it looks like they pay more attention when they are walking across the street while on their phone.

    January 27, 2011 at 11:12 pm |
  446. Sam

There shouldn't be a law against walking and texting because that would defeat the purpose of MOBILE phones, which were obviously created for on-the-go communication, and people are smart enough to walk and text while paying enough attention to their surroundings to keep out of any danger.

    January 27, 2011 at 11:23 pm |
  447. Casey

When i'm talking to someome on my cell phone, i can still see if drivers are coming. Same with ipods and other things. But if you had to wear a blindfold in order to call, listen to music and other things, that would be a whole different story.

    January 27, 2011 at 11:28 pm |
  448. Jacob

I think this is a good punishment, because if you'r lisening to music and/or texting u could get hit or not notice you'r walking when u arn't supost to.

    January 27, 2011 at 11:34 pm |
  449. Ian

I think it should be illegal to use an electronic device while crossing a road. Besides it is only while you are crossing a street so take a little break and become aware of your surroundings. It isn't that big a deal not looking at your phone or iPod for barely 30 seconds.

    January 27, 2011 at 11:38 pm |
  450. Emily

I personally think that the law is a good idea. In the CNN Student News coverage of the story, it was mentioned that critics say it is not as important as texting while driving because pedestrians pose less of a threat. Maybe we should be considering the danger it poses to pedestrians as well as drivers. People won't realize the danger of their actions until it is too late and they've been injured or killed. If a law were passed, it is probable that the amount of people who text while crossing the street would decline. Many lives could be saved.

And as for drivers? Think about the drivers who would swerve to avoid clueless texters. They could run off the road and injure themselves or others.

All in all, this is a dangerous thing that should be prohibited.

    January 28, 2011 at 12:02 am |
  451. Courtney

I think people should not text, try to call other people, or listen to music. But the music should NOT have both earphones in their ears or have the music up to full blast. BUT, it could become the driver's problem too. So pay attention or pay the price.

    January 28, 2011 at 8:18 am |
  458. Melanie

I think not being able to text or use an electric device while crossing the road or walking around the block, it should be the own persons responsibility to be able to text or use electronics. its crazy that they are trying to make a law against it after they invented the damn devices !

    January 28, 2011 at 8:19 am |
  459. thompson

i dont think thre should be a law txting while walking buti do think there be a rule about txting while driving because that is a lot more dangerous.

    January 28, 2011 at 8:20 am |
  460. marquis

i think it stupid because your just txting and if you do walk in the road drivers should be watchin the road

    January 28, 2011 at 8:20 am |
  461. amber

I dont thinlk there should be a law against texting while walking because its the persons fault if they hit you while their driving. They should be looking were their driving.

    January 28, 2011 at 8:20 am |
  462. shakia

I dont think that you should get a ticket just for texting while walking i could see getting a ticket for driving and texting but if your just walking i dont see whats the big deal if your texting at the same time.

    January 28, 2011 at 8:21 am |
  463. Stephen

I really think this is the most idiotic law ive ever heard of. I mean its mostly the drivers fault they should keep their eyes on the road. if they see a pedestrien walking they should immeadietly stop.

    January 28, 2011 at 8:22 am |
  464. christian

NO way sould there be a law against texting while walking but against driving YES. stay safe.

    January 28, 2011 at 8:28 am |
  465. charles

This is a stupid law.If people get hurt while txting its their fault for txting and why dont people just call each other.

    January 28, 2011 at 8:29 am |
  466. emily

i think that this i dea is smart but stupid at the same time. i say this because some people pay attention and look up every other second, but then there are those who don't pay attention at all...

    January 28, 2011 at 8:50 am |
  467. Stephanie

Texting and walking should not be banned because it is not the responsibility of the pedestrian to not get hit by a car. It is the sole responsibility of the driver to be careful of people crossing the road.

    January 28, 2011 at 9:03 am |
  468. Nathan

Seriously?!?! It sounds like they're trying to take over our lives. Do I believe in this law.... NO! Part of the reason we bought them was to use them. If they change this law, it would effect companies like Apple because their #'s would go down. This could potentially effect the economy. And plus, we already have a law against driving and texting, the drivers should be now more alert. Not only will the city police have lots of tickets on their hands, it might bring down the middle class to the lower class. Our "Free" nation doesn't sound so free anymore. Aren't the unalienable rights "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness"? What happened to the freedom of Life?!?

    January 28, 2011 at 9:05 am |
  469. Brea...

First off it makes since, they are only trying to keep the people who have to walk safe, just like only one who is driving. I’m sure they aren’t doing it to upset people, just concerned about their safety. I don’t think they should be fined that much or maybe given warnings first like any other offense.

    January 28, 2011 at 9:10 am |
  470. Trae

Even though i vote against the ticketing law, i think that it is a safety hazard to text, talk, or listen to music while walking because it just totally throws you off be cautios at all.

    January 28, 2011 at 9:15 am |
  471. Kyle

This law is ridiculous. What if you are crossing a street and a relative has a heart attack or something. You would need to be in contact with your family. A $100 fine for listening to music? Outrageous!

    January 28, 2011 at 9:16 am |
  472. Sasha

that law is not a very good idea. i mean, like, what happened to the freedom to use our phone, ipods, or whatever, on th street? if i DID get a ticket i would pay it, but i would probably move from that area if i could.

    January 28, 2011 at 9:40 am |
  473. Alex

We should have a law banning texting while DRIVING, not texting while WALKING. Honestly, that just dosen't make sense.

    January 28, 2011 at 9:43 am |
  474. Ryan

I think they should make a it a law to not use a device while crossing. It could be fatal considering the way new yorkers drive.

    January 28, 2011 at 9:45 am |
  475. Kody

I do not think that people should get tickets for that. They should use common sense and be aware of their surroundings.

    January 28, 2011 at 10:10 am |
  476. Nicole

I think it is stupid because texting and walking isent like running a red light its not that bad the worst that could happen is you could fall....

    January 28, 2011 at 10:15 am |
  477. tyler

i think there should be a law because someone could get hurt

    January 28, 2011 at 10:19 am |
  478. ns

I think the law is stupid. People should be able to something as simple as texting while their walking. After all it is "A Free Country"

    January 28, 2011 at 10:19 am |
  479. brisco

You should not get a ticket for walking and texting because it is not a real harm to people so maybe for driving.

    January 28, 2011 at 10:20 am |
  480. carrie

its a stupid idea it is the drivers fault if they hit us while were texting because there soppose to be a responsible drivers!!

    January 28, 2011 at 10:28 am |
  481. Michelle

You shouldn't get a ticket fror walking and texting because it will be the drivers fault because he or she hit them they should be paying attention

    January 28, 2011 at 10:28 am |
  482. Adrianne

I think that giving out tickets could be a good way to help stop accidents from happening. Think if you were walking down the street would you rather be hit by a car or would you rather just stop listening to Taylor Swift's new album cover music? So shut off the tunes for two seconds, cross the street the jam out after. And no matter what stop if you get a text don't keep walking and run into someone!!

    January 28, 2011 at 10:30 am |
  483. ryan

i do not think that you should get a ticket just for walking and if you do that then you should be careful and you should be fine.

    January 28, 2011 at 10:44 am |
  484. Rebecca

texting while walking souldn't be illegal. maybe it should be a law if you are srossng a street but not just walking down the sidewalk.

    January 28, 2011 at 10:51 am |
  485. Katherine

In small cities, this is not needed since people don't really tend to be walk across busy streets in highways....

But in places like new york city and downtown atlanta... I can see the need for this law.

    January 28, 2011 at 11:16 am |
  486. Ryan

I think their should'nt be a law because people should be more reposneable for their own actions,

    January 28, 2011 at 11:17 am |
  487. Lauren

I think that it shouldn't be illegal because people are in complete control of there actions. And they should be responsible for themselves and also the drivers should be aware of everything going on around them.

    January 28, 2011 at 11:17 am |
  488. Lindsey

I dont think there should be a law or a fine for texting or listening to music while crossing the street. I just think people should watch where they are driving.

    January 28, 2011 at 11:18 am |
  489. daniel

I thik there should not be fined for texting and talking because people should more careful and if they get hit thats their problem.

    January 28, 2011 at 11:18 am |
  490. Dani

I don't think there should be a law because people should watch out for there own actions and if they get hit by a car, that is a choice they made

    January 28, 2011 at 11:18 am |
  491. Daisha

There should not be a law against texting while walking because drivers should be careful not to hit walking pedestrians. And pedestians should take their eyes off of their phone for at least a minute to walk across the street and then continue what they're doing on their phone.

    January 28, 2011 at 11:18 am |
  492. Jazmin

I think that ticketing people for using any type of electronic device while crossing the road is not right. People are responsible for their own actions and it would be their own fault if an accident happened because they were too involved into their electronic device.

    January 28, 2011 at 11:19 am |
  493. francheska

no i dont think there should be a law that you cant text while walking beacuse thats really dumb and people should be looking where there walking before they go any where.

    January 28, 2011 at 11:24 am |
  494. Talia

I think it's a good idea because it will make sure that people are safe
and won't get hurt. It will also teach people that they need to be responsible and if they are not responsible there will be consequences for their actions. It will also help because usually when you're walking and you're looking at everything else BUT where you're going that's where the accidents and the"Oh, i didn't mean to!"
    come from.

    January 28, 2011 at 11:37 am |
  495. tori

yeah it might be a good idea for like 2 weeks , then people are going to get tired of obeying the law , and it will wont the person to text more just to get the law off or try to show something , so no i dont think its a good idea and it wouldnt make a difference .

    January 28, 2011 at 11:44 am |
  496. nick

i have heard that some cities are planing on putting cameras up to know when to use a red light because people are to lazy to push that little button to turn a green light in to a red light

    January 28, 2011 at 11:50 am |
  497. ChRiS

ive seen seen several teenagers walking while texting or blast there music in there ears so loud they cant here anything.. the idea of a ticket is a great idea but teens should be able to atleast have one headphone in if they have both then the should get a ticket.

    January 28, 2011 at 11:53 am |
  498. Jessica

I do not agree with the law as I am texting and walking I pay attention. In New York City though I do not dare to text and walk because of the danger, but in my my small town it`s just silly.

    January 28, 2011 at 11:59 am |
  499. Holly

No, that is so stupid if you cant text or listen to mp3s or ipods i know for a fact i wouldnt pay i fine for talking to my mom or dad while i am walking down the street to let them know where i am going or checking in with them, that is just plain dumb!!

    January 28, 2011 at 12:01 pm |
  500. Erin

No. I don't think so. In my opinion, i think that its not bad thing to do. If an emergency accrues, and lets say your phone doesn't have calling, how are you able to find out the emergency if your say walking on a non busy street and you check your phone because of a text and you get a ticket? Well that's not even fair. Now i would understand if it was a very bust street then yes i find that reasonable for safety reasons.

    January 28, 2011 at 12:07 pm |
  501. Elyse

I personally think that its not a good idea to make it a law to not be able to text while walking. Because I understand why its illeagal to text while driving, but it is not a good idea for walking. Because teenagers/highschoolers would never listen to those laws. And if you cant walk and text, where can you?

    January 28, 2011 at 12:09 pm |
  502. Ambara

I think that there SHOULD'NT be a no texting and walking law. People listen, im not allowed to have my IPhone on the week days... But when i do, I am VERY careful. I am always in the social network! And sometimes when I am walking i do text and maybe more than one person at a time but... When i do I am always careful where i walk, cause if you dont something bad could happen like"falling in a water fountain!!" actually when I walk i carry my phone in my hand till I am almost done. Yeah, this is LONG and if i saw a post like this on CNN i might not stop to read it....But i think i have a POINT

    January 28, 2011 at 12:09 pm |
  503. Jessica

I agree but not in small towns in my city there are 3 or 4 car when I am crossing the street however in NYC I would not dare to even pull out my phone while walking on the sidewalk.

    January 28, 2011 at 12:10 pm |
  504. Trey

i think its stupid because most people know what they are doing and are responsible for their own actions.

    January 28, 2011 at 12:19 pm |
  505. Kassy

I think it is the drivers fault if they aren't paying attention they should get a fine. They should be watching out for the pedestrians. So they should just forget about giving fines....

    January 28, 2011 at 12:21 pm |
  506. Kendall

While people should be more careful while they are walking, it does not mean that people should be fined. Often times people are running late and they can not stop waling to make a call. Also MP3 players and cellphones do not distract people anymore then talking to someone verbally.

    January 28, 2011 at 12:24 pm |
  507. Miles

It should not be illigal to use a phone and cross the street. Crashing while in the crosswalk is the driver's fault. The reason we have crosswalks is so people don't have to worry when crossing the street.

    January 28, 2011 at 12:30 pm |
  508. Michaela

I think that there should be a law because i think that it is the pedestrians fault because the drivers don't do any thing they should look and STOP TEXTING

    January 28, 2011 at 12:52 pm |
  509. Fredonia

choices are what make this counrty. if we take the choice from people than what kind of country is this? I understand that you shouldnt test in certain places, but restricting people from texting, calling, listioning to music would be takeing their choices away from them.

    January 28, 2011 at 12:55 pm |
  510. Valerie

i think it should be against the law because people could get hurt. say you run into some one and you acidently push them in front of a car. or if you ran into a car your self. do you want to die or be a murderer.

    January 28, 2011 at 12:58 pm |
  511. Lora

I don't Believe that this should be a law because of the fact that all you are doing is walking and it's not like you will kill someone cuz u r textin.
But All u I have to say is just don't run into the street.

    January 28, 2011 at 12:59 pm |
  512. Clay

Their should be a law, but not a full law, sort of a, restricted law, with only enforced in places with a high amount of traffic or danger sites. Where as in you get a fine.

    January 28, 2011 at 1:03 pm |
  513. braydon

I walk everywhere listening to music i've only been hit a cpl times because i didnt look both ways they should put a reminder that tells u to look b4 u cross better than stomping on our rights

    January 28, 2011 at 1:05 pm |
  514. Eric

i DONT THINK THERE SHOULD BE A LAW BECAUSE EVERYONE TEXT AND WALK SOMETIMES AND IF YOU PUT EVERYONE IN JAIL THATS STOOPID

    January 28, 2011 at 1:06 pm |
  515. Paul

I think there should not be a law for texting while walking. If we get hurt or possibly a more deadly fate (death). Then it is your fault.

    January 28, 2011 at 1:06 pm |
  516. Hailey

I think that this is a stupid thing to do...People driving and walking should both be cautious of what they are doing but they shouldn't put a law on this. Seriously, just be more cautious and maybe you won't get hit by a car or paying for someone's hospital bill.

    January 28, 2011 at 1:07 pm |
  517. darian

I don't think there should be a law about texting because there just making us pay for something that we not only already pay for, they make us pay for something that we do every day!

    January 28, 2011 at 1:08 pm |
  518. dylan

people are dumb and should pay more attention to whats happening around them..... we all shouldnt pay for those idiots mistakes..... and if they can get off their phones then they deserve to get ranover

    January 28, 2011 at 1:08 pm |
  519. santo

I think it’s a good idea, but it would depend on the size of the town and the nature of the activity. I live in a small town in southwestern Nebraska and texting while crossing the street isn't really that big of a problem out here, but in a place like New York City or Minneapolis it's a reasonable concern. So I say it would depend on how the law was written, personally I think I'd make a law saying there has to be a law about it, but leave it up to the States to make specifics. Also if a person is walking or jogging for exercise and happens to be crossing the street on their route and has ear buds in, I really think they should be exempt from a law like this. If I got caught, I'd probably say I was on my daily walk and just happened to get a text from a very good friend and had no intention of replying while crossing, I was simply looking at what they sent me.

    January 28, 2011 at 1:11 pm |
  520. tay

i think its so stupin to have such a retarted law for texting and walking
people should just be more responsible

    January 28, 2011 at 1:12 pm |
  521. Chelsea

I think that people themselves are the one who should watch out where they are going and also that drivers should watch out for pedstrains who are texting and walking across a busy street/ road in my opnion i think that it is both the drivers and the walkers should have to use caution on both there parts and if the walker get hit because the driver who cant stop thats there own fault ! Also once i was in new york and it was me or the phone i picked me over the phone drop the phone and run people i would never risk my life for the life of my phone no matter what so chew on this people chew on this !!!!!

    January 28, 2011 at 1:12 pm |
  522. nick

i think there should be a law against it beacause it can be dangerous.A woman got hit by a car when she was texting and walking!I think the better thing to do would be to create a law against texting while walking,or at least try to warn people of the conciqueces of it. people text while they drive that is just as dangerous as texting while walking.

    January 28, 2011 at 1:13 pm |
  523. Indya

Someone got ranover by a car and another woman fell in a fountain. It can get worse than that! I always have to watch out for my brother who is always playing is ds instead of watching where hes going. He almost bumped into a pregnant woman

    January 28, 2011 at 1:13 pm |
  524. Angel

Even though this may seem like a good idea to some people, its not gonna work really. Too many people text while walking americans are going to get fed up with the situation. Besides i text all the time while i walk and i wouldnt wanna get a ticket for something so irrelevant. I don't like the idea i think its insane now, just because a few people have been unaware while texting dosnt mean everyone will its sooo out of line especially inforcing it on teens! i guess more teens will be locked up if this insane law gose through....

    January 28, 2011 at 1:15 pm |
  525. Sarah

If some one gets ran over by car then the driver should help them not just get out of the car and kick the person 2 times of course u shouldnt hurt the person oncethey got hit cuz they got in ur way...Like i saidthey should bring the person 2 the hospital instead of the person sitting the n bleedding with broken bones...i have2 watch my lil sister everytime we r nearthe road so shedoesnt get hit n die or get hurt

    January 28, 2011 at 1:15 pm |
  526. dcp

are u kidding me with thst stupid but law ya;; trying to in force if peopple stupid enouch to walk in the road then thats there fault yall dont worry about it

    January 28, 2011 at 1:18 pm |
  527. Savannah

You make the choice of texting while you are walking. Therefore you need to deal with the consequences of what happens. Its the risk you take as a pedestrian! Common sense people!

    January 28, 2011 at 1:20 pm |
  528. Brooke

I think it is a good law. Driver's should keep their eyes on the road at all times, but what if someone is distracted by texting and steps out onto the street at the worst moment??? What if the car doesn't have time to stop? People are thinking from the perspective of the texter, think of it from the perspective of the driver.

    January 28, 2011 at 1:38 pm |
  529. Nathan

Haveing a law aginst texting is unneeded i agree that there is a danger to texting while walking but, that just means that the one texting needs to be more carefull.

    January 28, 2011 at 1:38 pm |
  530. Romeo

i dont think you should get fined for walking and texting. Its one thing for driving and texting because you can hit someone or something but if your walking why can you just look up every couple of seconds so your not causing a accident for you or someone else near you.

    January 28, 2011 at 1:40 pm |
  531. Makiya

I thought this was a good law because it can decrease accidents. California is a very busy state and drivers aren't always paying attention. If this law comes in affect, I would feel very safe to walk around California.

    January 28, 2011 at 1:41 pm |
  532. michael

i thinck it is a bad idea because it is the drivers responsibility to pay attention to pedestrians, that is one of the reasons you need to pass a drivers test to get a licence

    January 28, 2011 at 1:44 pm |
  533. Pepe

There shouldn't be a law against texting and walking. That is something we do in are every day life, if you made a law against that it would not only anger teenagers but also adults.

    January 28, 2011 at 1:53 pm |
  534. Amy

I think it should because if you think about it people could get really hurt by walking and being on your phone and i think it is stupid because, the people who might hit the person on the phone might get blamed but it would really be the people on the phones.

    January 28, 2011 at 1:55 pm |
  535. Dude

uuhhhhh.............i think it should be like totaly not legal man......like for real who will put a law for poeple to get a 100 $ ticket for just texting

    January 28, 2011 at 1:57 pm |
  536. karine

    I DON'T LIKE THIS LAW

    January 28, 2011 at 2:11 pm |
  537. Matthew

Everyone shouldn't have to pay the cost of not texting while walking because it is their own resposibility to pay attention while walking in the road and on sidewalks.

    January 28, 2011 at 2:12 pm |
  538. Taylor

I think it is a good and bad idea. Its a good idea because you the texter are taking a risk of being hit or injured by a car. I think its a dumb idea because some people(law inforcment officers) are taking the texting while driving way to far.

    January 28, 2011 at 2:15 pm |
  539. Giovanna

I personally think that there should absolutely NOT be a law against texting while walking. When your out on the street and your walking all alone texting is like your entertainment. Because when your in the car your entertainment is the radio. So therefore there shouldnt be a law against texting while walking.

    January 28, 2011 at 2:53 pm |

    January 28, 2011 at 3:00 pm |
  543. jesus

I think it is a good idea for people to get ticket because they must pay more on where they are going than texing on there phone that is my opinion

    January 28, 2011 at 3:01 pm |
  544. Alia

I think its bad cause, you are walking a cross the street and texting andd a car hits you . And you can bump in to a little kid and me/she gets hurt and starts crying that would be your fult

    January 28, 2011 at 3:02 pm |
  545. alex

I think no because some one could be driking and some one is walking and texting and that person could get ran over from the driking driver.

    January 28, 2011 at 3:06 pm |
  546. daniel

Erest people who text wale walk, they gest want to get run over, they are dumb, I don't like people who walk and text.

    January 28, 2011 at 3:06 pm |
  547. rosa

I thinck texting when you are walking is not a good idea because you can get ranover by a car and you can hurt someone els.

    January 28, 2011 at 3:06 pm |
  548. malcolm

ging a ticket for texting is a good idea because if you are texting wen you are carosing the staret you can git ranover.////////

    January 28, 2011 at 3:07 pm |

people hou text and walk at the same time should get tickets because they don't no where they are going.

If you are texting while you are walking i would think you be careful . where you go and you might get a lot of trouble by a police.

I think that people could not be texting wild walking because you can die.

    January 28, 2011 at 3:09 pm |

You should not text anywhere because you can get hurt easy or die and go to jail too.

I think texting and walking should be a rule but it would be better when a cop doesnt give you a ticket because a lot of people work hard for it and they should just tell you to focus on what your doing and if you dont listen you shouid do something for them.

I think ther shoud be a law against walking while texing becaus not just u could get hert u can cous someone eles 2 get hert and u mite hit a lil girl or a lil boy .

Some people can't people can't walk and chew gum at the same time should that be illegal.

    January 28, 2011 at 3:47 pm |
  556. Yoselin

I dont believe it should be illegal to use any electronic device while crossing the street. The fault would be just as much the drivers than the pedestrian. The pedestrian should pay more attention nand stop while crossing the street.
if i got caught texting while walking in a place where that isnt allowed i would try to avoid that ever happening but if it did i would just take the $100 fine.
    RESPONSE TO alex: i agree

I thought about it and I really believe that it really should be a law it's a safer way to stay ALIVE.I know others may thing about it as a dumb law but it's for the best.[STUDENTS]you may learn a lesson or you should just go with it and see for yourself it will be good.

    January 28, 2011 at 3:51 pm |
  558. LaUrEn

I think that whoever is texting should be responsible for whatever their doing if their texting they should know their surroundings for safety reasons.

    January 28, 2011 at 3:54 pm |
  559. Delaney

There shouldn't be a law against texting while walking!!! It's the same as listening to the radio in the car. And that's allowed. Plus the driver should be looking after the people in front of them. It's their job to keep their eyes on the road.

    January 28, 2011 at 4:10 pm |
  560. WiseDude

I don't know how people in general should respond to this in a changing America where you cant even have a decient conversation with a kid these days... It may be for the best...

  561. Aurora

I personally beleive that every individual is entitled to talk to whoever they want wherever they want over the phone while crossing the strret. Peolpe living in New York have a job and other priorities they must attend to therefore, a cellphone, or any other electronic device is essential in comleting their daily tasks. It is ludricous to be charged with a fine of $100 just for talking to someone over the phone when it is neccessary.

    January 28, 2011 at 4:19 pm |
  562. Kelsey

There is a difference between safety laws and downright just violating a person's rights. Has this world gone so bonkers that we can't cross the street while listening to music?

    January 28, 2011 at 5:13 pm |
  563. Gracen

The "texter" must be prepared for the worst! safety is important, If the law is to continue, i do not think there will be an easy way to monitor exacally who texts while walking or not, making it unreasonable without a fixed plan to catch everyone who is to do it!

    January 28, 2011 at 5:25 pm |
  564. Jack

This suggestion is rediculous. If anything, drivers should be more careful, not walkers. Even if this regulation is accepted, who is going to stop the four ton car? The walker or the driver

    January 28, 2011 at 5:40 pm |
  565. Jonah

I think this would be a good idea in the bigger cities of the U.S. Very few people walk in smaller towns and it wouldn't make much sense. If it was made a law, the fine should only be made after a set number of times breaking that rule. So basically, I think it would be a good idea in bigger cities, but not in small towns.

    January 28, 2011 at 5:54 pm |
  566. Maggie

Texting could not only hurt the person walking but the driver and the people standing on the sidewalk if a wreck occurred. Texting shouldn't cause pain to people. People should wait till they get to a spot to stop and text so they can save their life and others.

    January 28, 2011 at 6:12 pm |
  567. Yessica

i believer that you shouldn't text while walking, you should always look both ways before crossing the street it is a rule and it will always be a rule

    January 28, 2011 at 6:16 pm |
  568. Sarah

I think texting and walking crossing the street at the same time is putting your own life at risk. It's also pathetic. What text in all the world would be more important than worrying about getting hit?! Probably none, because if you are blinded by the technology in your hand, tradgedy happens.

    January 28, 2011 at 6:33 pm |
  569. Lacey

Hey! If people who want to text while walking they should.Eventhough you text while walking the phone makers should come out with a phone you can see through so you text and walk at the same time.If you try texting in the mall you might get wet or hurt.So don't try texting while walking in the mall. You to could end-up in the water tank with money LIKE ME!!!!!

    January 28, 2011 at 6:38 pm |
  570. Mckenna

i think that electronic book are cool...for example ipad but still that would take a lot of money to replace one. you can drop a book not an ipad... 🙂

    January 28, 2011 at 6:44 pm |
  571. lucas

i think it should be banned because the walkers would not see were they are going.

    January 28, 2011 at 6:47 pm |
  572. McKenna

!!! wow if they really have a law for not texting and walking, the goverment either is not making enough money to keep themselves satisfied and happy or they are just picking on teens cause they are bored!!!
    >:(

    January 28, 2011 at 6:48 pm |
  573. Jessica

think it could be fatal to use electronic devices while walking, there is no doubt about it. However, I think it should be frowned upon, instead of illegal. Obviously, it would be dangerous to cross the street while texting/talking/emailing but it’s up to the pedestrian to “look both ways before crossing the street.” The NYPD should not spend time and tax payer’s money to ticket people for texting while walking.

    January 28, 2011 at 6:51 pm |
  574. Spencer

I think texting while your walking is ok because if your trying to get a hold of your boss or co-worker you can't just stop to text, you may need to keep walking.

    January 28, 2011 at 7:09 pm |
  575. matthew

It proboly is a bad idea to text while crossing the street is that you could not see signal for walking and stoping signal. I think it should be a law in most states.I think it should be in stores too so you don't break anything or bump in to anyone.

    January 28, 2011 at 7:22 pm |
  576. Nikki

I think it is not very wise to text and walk at the same time, because I am very clumsy myself. But, its not someones fault if you don't take your eyes and look up and watch where you're going.

    January 28, 2011 at 7:25 pm |
  577. Misty

Its better for people to be given 1-4 warnings, but if you're caught again, I don't think you should recieve a ticket. Just like drinking and smoking, people would be encourage to go against the rules, just for the thrill of doing something wrong.

    January 28, 2011 at 8:04 pm |

In my personal opion I think that texting while walking shouldn't be a law because I do it all the time and you don't see me SPLAT FLAT on the street or sidewalk now do you NO you don't.

  581. Grace and Abby

We think you shouldn't get a ticket; because we think you should get a few chances before you get a ticket. Instead of going after the people with electronics they could go after the driver and tell to keep their eyes on the road. If there was an accident that happened to the people with the phones like sombody got hurt and they got a ticket then they would not be able to pay for the medical bill because of the ticket!

    January 28, 2011 at 8:47 pm |
  582. Ariana

You have the choice of obeying the law or disobey but just think would you rather risk your life over a silly old cell phone or have an oppurtunity to save yourself a 100$. My life is more important than my cellphone.

PERRIFIAL VISION!!! i know I can see things out the corner of MY eye if i ever text while walking. once i texted while biking...not hard.

  584. JADA

I think there should be law becuz students really need to put their phones down and focuse on the street so they won't get hit.

    January 28, 2011 at 9:41 pm |
  585. Kort

This is insane drivers should pay more attention to pedestrians what if it was important. Furthermore dont they teach you that pedestrians have the right away.

Do you know how sad it is that the senate is worrying about CELL PHONE laws and not the tax cut or how to prevent another recession I personally think they should be frowned upon for even thinking about something that is so small that 99.9% of people would disagree.

i think its okay if you text while walking as long as you look up while you are texting.

    January 29, 2011 at 12:39 am |
  590. Dawson

I don't think people should get a ticket while texting. I would not like to pay $100 just for texting and walking across the street. Everybody is responsible to watch the street they are about to cross. The only reason people should get a ticket while texting is if they are jaywalking and texting. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. The only place people should be texting is on the sidewalk. If you get a text while crossing the road you should wait till you cross the street. I think people would learn their lession the first time. If a driver sees you texting that person should honk their horn at you. We Americans have the right to multi-task,make our own choices, and do what we feel is right. Most people probaly think "Okay 1...2...3...GO" then run across the street while texting. Maybe some kids are peer pressured into doing it, they don't deserve a ticket but that person will probaly still get a ticket. It's not right to give poeple a ticket who don't deserve a ticket. Parents should also take responsibility for their kids texting while crossing the road. It's the parents decision to tell their kids to not text or "if you pay attention first, then you can text." People should invent a phone that you say whatever you what to text just by saying it and when you get a text you press a button and it acts like a bluetooth. That way you can keep your head focused on the street you're crossing. Crosswalks should have a no signal zone. Thats why I think kids should not get a ticket when they are texting and walking across the street.

    January 29, 2011 at 12:40 am |
  591. Lauren

I think that we shouldnt get a ticket just for texting because what if you need to respond to the text/call and its a emergancy so its not right

    January 29, 2011 at 12:44 am |
  592. Drake

There is a law against texting while driving because you run the risk of endangering innocent lives. If you are texting while walking and get hit by a car then it is your fault not the drivers. It is okay to walk and text because it's your choice if you want to be safe or not.

    January 29, 2011 at 1:03 am |
  593. kijana

it a bad idea because you can get hit by a car.

    January 29, 2011 at 8:37 am |
  594. Edianne

I don't think people should get in trouble for texting while walking across the street if they get hurt they'll learn their lesson

    January 29, 2011 at 10:32 am |
  595. Eric

This law is quite good but needs some changes. They should be able to listen to any form of Music Players long as it is in their pocket. Phones should not be allowed as it stops you from hearing and seeing signals.

    January 29, 2011 at 11:01 am |
  596. Brienn

I think its a good idea because my family does it some times and their lives are in dangered on the street I've seen accidents and i don't like them.

    January 29, 2011 at 11:44 am |
  597. Alexis

I'm really stumped on which side to go on actually. This law could be good in some ways, but in other ways could be a bother to people. In my opinion, if I were to cross the street with just my earbuds in my ears, would I get ticketed or would I get ticketed if I just took out my ipod while I was walking? I think this is a pretty confusing topic once you put some thought into it.

    January 29, 2011 at 12:27 pm |
  598. Kelli

There shouldnt be a law for texting while walking across the street because the people of the road need to be watching where they're going. Pedestrians dont need to worry about an accident happening at a red light,

    January 29, 2011 at 12:51 pm |
  599. jenna

you should not get a tiket for walking and texting me and my famly does it all the time so we shoud no get tikets if we can only text at home or in the car if we are driving then what is the pont of even haveing a cell phone

    January 29, 2011 at 12:56 pm |
  600. Melissa

melissa i agree with you, people should be held responsible for their own lives, they were given a vehicle to get around with nbut also to have caution because they might take away someones life and the pedestrains should know that some people are lunatics when it comes to driving

    January 29, 2011 at 3:03 pm |
  601. Karri

People seem to get very distracted with their electronics. I think that for most people this is a good law to put in place. Yet, most people will just keep on doing what they want. I think people need to understand that laws are set in place to PROTECT them, maybe then they'll be a littel more willing to listen and follow!

    January 29, 2011 at 3:05 pm |
  602. Carson

Saying it is illegal to text and walk is taking away from our freedom, if we keep making laws preventing us from doing stuff, we would be able to say this is the land of the free!

    January 29, 2011 at 3:11 pm |
  603. Chloe

It's a good idea. I disagree with the people who say it's partly the driver's fault, they teach you to look both ways don't they? It's a different matter if you are not crossing the street, but while near or crossing busy streets the pedestrian should watch the road just as much as the driver.

    January 29, 2011 at 3:41 pm |
  604. Hanna

I personally think there shoud not be a law against texting and walking unless it is while crossing roads, people should still take responsibility for there actions either way.

    January 29, 2011 at 4:23 pm |
  605. Laura

i think that texting while walking shouldnt be illegal because then even up to ten year olds would be fined. Also i think that the government has to deal with the texting issue appropriately not just giving fines out like if nothing. Besides pedestrians have the right to walk so the people that should be fined are the irresponsible drivers that text while driving.

I agree with alex on his statement on that the driver has to recognize the pedestrian. Like i think that if you put a case of this in a court of law the pedestrian is going to end up winning for the reason being is that the driver has to be alert all time.

    January 29, 2011 at 5:20 pm |
  606. Pauline

I think you can be smart enough to be able texting while walking. Making a law to prevent it would be a childish law.

    January 29, 2011 at 5:23 pm |
  607. savannah

there should be a law against texting and walking because someone could get hurt and try to blame someone and maybe even sue!!!

    January 29, 2011 at 5:42 pm |
  608. Hibah

I think the driver and the walker should both be careful because the driver should be watching the road and the walker should be watching too.

    January 29, 2011 at 5:43 pm |
  609. Hayden

I do not agree with the law, but if i got caught i will take the fine and pay it without trying to find an excuse because it is the law.

    January 29, 2011 at 6:35 pm |
  610. Shelby

    January 29, 2011 at 7:20 pm |
  611. Haley

No i don't think their should be a law for texting and walking it shouldn't be a law that if your caught texting and walking you would get a ticket that's just stupid a lot of people text and walk.... it would be the drivers fault if they got hurt i'm not saying that the other person shouldn't be getting in trouble to but its partly their fault people should be aware of whats happening around them while they are texting!!

    January 29, 2011 at 7:48 pm |
  612. Megan

This is so dumb i mean really. You could have had someone from work who needed you to get something and you would not get the call, pass the store he needed it from and have to go back later. As lazy people we are now you would not want to do it and refuse!

    January 29, 2011 at 8:35 pm |
  613. Yarely

I don't think this law should be made. The reason is that sometimes people get kidnapped. This is just an example maybe i'm thinking to much but just think about it. When one of your family members get kidnapped the killer probably calls you and he's telling you what to do to get that person back. If you hang up you can't help that individual. This can also occur if you're listening to music. I mean listening to your ipod isn't a bad thing because you're conscious of what you're doing.

    January 29, 2011 at 8:57 pm |
  614. Matthew

i dont think that this is a bad idea for crossing a cross walk, i will admit it would help people pay attention to people in cars that ned to get somewhere, but i think if your just walking and texting in a hallway you should not be fined

    January 29, 2011 at 9:05 pm |
  615. deontay

i think it is good to have that law because a lot of people get killed each day

    January 29, 2011 at 9:32 pm |
  616. Veronica

the driver and the pedestrian should be watching for hazards even if that means putting down the phone. i don't think people should get a ticket though, and pedestrians have the right away even if they aren't watching.

    January 29, 2011 at 9:46 pm |
  617. Briyana

I don't think it's a good idea to have a law like that at all. We have a right to listen to our Ipods or text on our phones. We have the responsibility to be watching for cars but at the same time the cars have to watch for us too.

    January 29, 2011 at 9:54 pm |

WALKING AND TEXTING IS NOT A CRIME I THINK IT IS REDICULIOS THAT PEOPLE GET CHARGED ONE HUNDRED DOLLERS

    January 29, 2011 at 9:56 pm |
  619. BILLIEJO

WOW HOLD THAT WHY WOULD THEY CHARGE ONE HUNDRED DOLLERS FOR TXTING OR TALKING OR ANY ELECTRONIC DEVICES BAD IDEA IT IS YOUR PROPERTY THEY CANT TELL YOU NOTHING BECAUSE ITS YOUR YOU OWN IT BAD IDEA ONCE AGAIN

    January 29, 2011 at 10:00 pm |
  620. Kale

I think its completly fair! People should be aware of where they are and where they are going. Plus if your texting while your walking you could accidentily trip over something and injure yourself and possibly people around you.

    January 29, 2011 at 11:12 pm |
  621. Mercedes

I think if u text while walking u u should not get a ticket because people who are driving should keep their WIDE EYES OPEN.

    January 29, 2011 at 11:27 pm |
  622. Austin

I think it matters what the driver is doing because their the ones who are supposed to be paying attention to the road so if someone ever gets hits by a car the driver is the one to blame

    January 30, 2011 at 12:00 am |
  623. JASON

it would be the person with the ear phone in or on the phone, really how long does take to get along a street

    January 30, 2011 at 12:18 am |
  624. patrcia

well i dont think there should be a law because if the people know they will be walking in a major trafic area then they should wait until they are in a safe location to view texts or text back.

    January 30, 2011 at 12:33 am |
  625. laila

I think being fined for texting and walking is wrong. Mainly because it's the driver who should be paying attention to where they're driving. But that doesn't let the pedestrian whose not paying attention either off the hook.

    January 30, 2011 at 12:56 am |
  626. Ali

I'm split. I agree that you should not be on any electronics while crossing the street, because that could be dangerous. But the fact that you could recieve a $100 fine, that's a little over the top. If I were caught texting while crossing the streets where it's illegal, I would apologize to the policeman and assure him it would not happen again. But, I doubt he/she would believe it.

    January 30, 2011 at 9:39 am |
  627. daisy

i would like to respong to bens comment well the same thing happens to me when i use my ipod im not distracted by it while crossing the street .But my phone could be sometimes distracting but i believe getting a ticket for it wouldnt be the right thing because some people are using there phones for emergencies and that would not be fair that they get a ticket for it .But also the driver should watch out for the pedistrain croossing the streets, they shouldnt be driving crazy in a intersection

    January 30, 2011 at 9:53 am |
  628. alari

good idea. but however, the law needs to say no using electronic devices while DRIVING not WALKING. drivers need keep their eyes on the road.

    January 30, 2011 at 10:29 am |
  629. camryn

If you are texting and walking you can fall or run into someone and you can walk in the street while not know and get hit by a car.

    January 30, 2011 at 11:29 am |
  630. Olivia

I think it should be your own choice to text while walking and you shouldn't get tickets for texting your friends. It would be a big sacrifice for kids these days and not to mention it is very expensive $500! It's unrealistic to have someone pay that much because they were just texting...

    January 30, 2011 at 1:38 pm |
  631. Olivia

Fining people for texting while walking is rediculous in my opinion. Yes they should be save but fining them $500 is to steep of a penalty.

    January 30, 2011 at 1:41 pm |
  632. Tyler

I don't believe it's right. It's a free country, so people are free to do their own actions, but they are also responsible for the consequence.

    January 30, 2011 at 2:21 pm |
  633. Alejandra

I belive they shouldn't issue tickets out just because they are texting in the street. The person conducting the vehicle should notice that theres someone passing the street and be aware that people suddenly may be passing the street. Apart from this if you are good sending text you don't even need to bother to look at the keyboard. If someone isn't that well experienced with texting and is clumsy they should think about passing the street while texting first then putting yourself out their knowing that their could be consequences afterwards. Do you really think that people wll follow this law? It would be a waste of time. If you think about it when something is illegal its more tempting for people to do. I don't really believe police officers will take their time to track down people texting while in the street. People text everywhere imaginable!

    January 30, 2011 at 2:22 pm |
  634. CRYSTAL

i agree with zachary.we have rights and making this law would be underminding these laws.so why are they trying to bend the amendments?it makes no sense plus zachary lists the amendments and proves how the government is going to break the law if they go through with this law.

    January 30, 2011 at 3:13 pm |
  635. Casey

People should not be ticketed for listening to their ipods or even talking on their cell phones I have friends that talk on their cell phones all the time especially when walking down the street. you shouldn't have to worry about getting hit by a car when talking to a friend or texting

    January 30, 2011 at 3:25 pm |
  636. Samantha

Walking across a street. Do we really need a law for this? Or is it just not using common sense? I wouldn't text while walking across a street. But listening to an ipod or calling someone is a little less dangerous. I don't think there should be a law. If your stupid enough, it's your fault. It's ridiculous that sometimes the law has to go this far. And I don't think little things like this should be up to the government to decide. It kind of like saying it's going to be illegal to wear red on flag day. If your a proud American you wear red and blue on flag day. If you want to live, you don't text when your crossing a street. COMMON SENSE!

    January 30, 2011 at 3:37 pm |
  637. kayla

well in my own opinion i really think its a good idea because now in days txting is becoming very addicting especially to teenegaers we do it like 24/7 and thats becoming an issue.. so now maybe if they actually put this law peaplo can atleast stop txting when there walking. Like that thety actually do something else for a while. 😀

    January 30, 2011 at 3:56 pm |

I think texting while walking should not be permitted prohibited against law. I think that if you are using a mobile device, you should be careful around your surroundings and drivers and other mobiles should also try to look out for their surroundings. It all deals with responsibility.

I don't think that fines should be placed for texting and walking. If you fine for texting and walking might as well fine for talking and walking. Your still getting distracted. Texting, talking to a person, or on the phone, I think it's all the same. It should be the responsibility of the driver to watch out for pedestrians.

    January 30, 2011 at 4:21 pm |

I think it's the fault of the driver because the driver should be watching the road at ALL times

I think this law is CRAZY busy cities should have it but not smaller towns. This law would be OUTRAGEOUS where I live.

i think that before they even decide to make this a law where you can get tickets for this that they should get more statics for other places in the u.s besides new york. we all know that there is alot of people in new york and most of them dont pay attention do what they are doing half of the time. so why base this all on new york what about califonia and florida?
alot of think that it is not just the people of cell phones and mp3s that should get a ticket. like people that are in cars should be more caution like there horn sohlud be working so they could warn people that or on cell phones but on mp3's i just dont know that to say besides the fact that people should try to not be so into the song that much or what ever they are listening to.

i think walking while texting should be allowed becuase it could be something important like, for example mom could be saying she wont be home or to come straight home, and teens will tend to forget by the time they get across to check their phones so hey wouldnt know and then moms would be freaking out! That would be very bad!

    January 30, 2011 at 6:25 pm |
  644. Sam

@Sarah Actually i think they should have that law, mainly because tehre are many accidents regarding what they just prohibited, texting and listening to music with both headphones plugged in, many people may disagree, but this is a way to stop many accidents. i am sure they didn't approve this law for no reason, this will help you in your future, and you will see how much accidents decrease.

I don't think that listening to your mp3 player or iPod should be illegal when we're crossing the street. We pay to use the device, correct? so why shouldn't we be able to listen to it while we're crossing the street? I, myself, think this is an absurd idea. The people that have iPods should be able to listen to it without a problem except if it's during class.
On the other hand, texting while crossing the street? I don't think anyone's dumb enough to do that. I always say that cars have brakes and they can use them for something. I am completely agreeing with the idea to make texting while crossing the street illegal for the good of people's safety.

  646. Ushaia

I personally believe this new law is not a good idea. It would definitely irritate a majority of people. Although the idea does do a good, benefiting effect to pedestrians with their own safety, it would cause more problems based around this law. No matter what, people would still use electronics regardless of this law. The cars are supposed to stop for us anyway.
I would defend myself by telling the court or whoever it may concern, that the driver may be either using their electronic device or not paying attention to the road how they should be.

    January 30, 2011 at 8:02 pm |
  647. Stephanie

I think it shouldn’t be illegal because it’s just useless to put a law like that. People should be concerned of how they walk in the street. If they want to get run over, then let it be. If they don’t want to pay attention to traffic lights/signals because there too busy to watch where they are going, then let it be their destiny. People need to stop and think twice of what they do, because a law is not going to stop them. Many people don’t obey laws, who thinks someone is going to listen to this one…not that many people.

Pedestrians have the right of way, so even if you are hit by a car, the driver will have to pay the fine, not you. As long as you are on the crosswalk, you should be able to text.

    January 30, 2011 at 9:30 pm |
  649. carlos

txting and walking can cause danger to the person. the person may not be awair of its surroundigs and cross the street and not notice it. a car can easily run that person over. and i do agree to this new law, people should know that for their own safety txing can cause alot of damage. the right thing to do is to stop on a side walk and txt.

One Solution: use one of those apps that use the camera on your phone that lets you see through the keyboard while you text/ walk (not the same when driving though). As for MP3 players PowerBeats are a good headphone for good music quality while letting in outside noise to keep up with your surroundings.

It could be dangerous and deadly i would want it to be protected by law ensted of by death

i think people should pay more attention to their surroundings but giving somebody a ticket for texting while walking isnt a good idea. mostly if the person got hit it would be the drivers fault that is what yeild for pedestrians is for and i really dont think a person can pay so much to a text that they dont see a car about to hit them

    January 30, 2011 at 10:30 pm |
  653. RED

i think there should NOT be a fine for texting & walking i mean, its ridicules..
what if your texting your parents? cause most parents now a days text, and they like little kids texting in there job sneaking it cause they cant talk on the phone...
or what if someone happens to be stalking you and you dont want to say it out loud so u prefer to text it to notify someone, like your PARENT .. just saying...
and usually when people get to the corner of a street people stop and look they might try to get ahead of cars and stuff but i dont think noone is stupid enough to keep walking when they get to a corner ..to get ranned over? yeah i dont think so...

    January 31, 2011 at 12:36 am |
  654. wendy

I think they should have a law against texting while walking but not a law against talking. Because for one I understand why texting, when i text while walking I attend to don’t pay attention on where i am going because I am too busy pay attention on the text message. But talking is different because you can see where you’re going.

    January 31, 2011 at 7:17 am |

No you shouldn't get a ticket because i do it all the time and i have never gotten hit by a car or anything like that you should just pay attention while texting and walking and not get hit by a car.

Texting while talking is something you shouldn't do. But getting a ticket for it?! That's rediculous! Nobody should be getting fined for texting while walking. If they get killed texting while walking, let them! Acually don't let them, but you probably get the point.

    January 31, 2011 at 9:18 am |
  658. stephanie

i dont think a law like this would be very convinient many teenagers cant afford to pay for a $100 ticket and you would end up with a court room ful of kids who cant pay or simply refuse to.. its not very smart to think that this law is gonna work out..

@ jeremy. i agree that drivers should keep their eyes on the road. drivers license are issued to supposedly good drivers anyways.

    January 31, 2011 at 9:38 am |
  659. Kayley

I don't think their should be a law for texting while walking, because people cant really get hurt, all they have to do is look before walking. And if someone gets hurt, it's the persons problem not the electronic's.

    January 31, 2011 at 10:48 am |
  660. Jordie

I think their should be a law against texting and walking. It's not the people in the cars fault if the pedestrian is not watching where they are going. Texting on a sidewalk should be okay, but if you are on a crosswalk and texting, you should be fined.

    January 31, 2011 at 11:10 am |
  661. Natalia

I think that getting a ticket for texting while walking is a good idea.It is dangerous for people to be walking across a crosswalk and texting. Now that there are not many crossing guards to make cars stop, people will be on the phone while walking, and only look up to see when they can go.Getting a ticket might make them think twice about staring at their phone rather than the road.

    January 31, 2011 at 11:16 am |
  662. Hannah

I think it would be wrong to give someone a ticket for listening to your iPod or for calling your friend. I listen to my iPod when I cross the road, but I still pay attention when I cross the road. Thanks 🙂

  663. Jenah

I think this is wrong. the government just want to add something that they can charge us for. many people are able to accomplish texting and walking. just because not every single person is able to do it doesn't make it an OverAll danger.

    January 31, 2011 at 12:11 pm |
  664. Nikki

I don't think it would be safe to text and walk, because there are alot of clumsy people out there. I think they should make a law about it too.

  665. riley

i think it should not matter if people walk and text becasu ethey already took it away on driving ( for a very very good reason) but know if we cant text and walk then the only time we will be able to text is when we are sitting down and the only time i basically ever sit down is with family and when im with my freinds i really have no reason to tex at all!

    January 31, 2011 at 1:45 pm |

I'm OK with talking on the phone when you're walking, but texting might be a problem. You can hit someone or something. Texting and driving is a big problem. Did you know that the risk of accident in a truck is up 2320 percent while texting. Wow! I know I'll never text and drive!

i think they should makethis a law because people today are stupid, some people cross the street without looking and people are texting while their crossing a busy street i think they should give people tickets if their crossing a street while texting they should be paying attention not talking to their freind. it could save many lives if they start giving out tickets.

    January 31, 2011 at 4:16 pm |
  671. Nathan

What's the purpose of cellphones, MP3 players, etc.? To listen to music or call people while on the go. If you fine someone for using a cellphone for its intened purpose, you may as well take it away from them for having it. It's like being fined for eatting food and not wearing it. Food is made for eatting, not wearing. But then again weapons are made for destrution, should they only be legal for their intened purpose? Now it is a problem when crossing the street while texting, so maybe a cellphone blocker could be placed at every major intersection. To me, this seems like just a way for the state to make money.

I think this is a ridiculous law. Most teenagers now in days text and hear their ipods while walking, therefore most teenagers would get a ticket. We can multitask and pay attention to what is going on. I don't think we are dumb enough to cross the street while texting when a car is coming. The government would just be using this law to get money.

    January 31, 2011 at 5:53 pm |
  675. mary

If you aren't watching yourself, how can you expect others to. its a matter of taking responsibility for your actions. thats why i believe ticketing for discipline is a good idea.

    January 31, 2011 at 5:54 pm |
  676. Patricia

I completely, disagree with this new idea, because texting while walking isn't a bad thing, you can't blame the technology for that, you blame the person that's so into the phone, or ipod. There shouldn't be a ticket for texting while walking because it's ridiculous, it makes no sense to fine someone, who received an emergency call, like a death in the family, or sickness someone in the hospitol. Besides, everyone does it, there's no point if your'e going to fine everyone who has a phone in use and walking at the same time.

I agree with what alex stated, the person who should be at fault for the event, would have to be the person driving the car because it's there job to watch the road, and what's in front of them. The person who is walking right in front of them, with the phone would be in danger, but not because of the phone and texting, it's because of the drivers on the road who don't keep their eyes open.

    January 31, 2011 at 6:06 pm |
  677. Jonathan

@ ben: In the eyes of law enforcement, an mp3 and a phone are practically the same thing. I don't think they would be able to tell the difference between someone changing a song or texting someone else.

I do not see this to be fair or to work out. This wouldn't just mean the ban of texting but the ban of all cellular phone use. This is also against our constitutional rights of communication. This is completely unjust and wrong and i am completely against it. I mean, it's only a matter of time before they replace no phone usage with no talking.

    January 31, 2011 at 6:12 pm |
  678. Hannah

I personally think that this is a good idea. Maybe if some people were more attentive, then there wouldn't be so may accidents

    January 31, 2011 at 6:18 pm |
  679. Alberto

I think that this law would be pointless. Its a bad habit, not a crime. Enforcing ít would be almost impossible in big cities because some many people are doing it at the same time. The only thing we can do is to teach people not to do it, and hope that drivers pay attention to the road.

    January 31, 2011 at 6:25 pm |
  680. Savannah

There should not be a law about no texting while walking. Its ridiculous!!! Just because some people cant watch what their doing while texting doesnt mean we all have to suffer with them.

    January 31, 2011 at 6:26 pm |
  681. Sabrina

Of course there should be one. Do you know how many people are killed or hurt with people just driving while texting alone? And it's really rude to bumb into somebody when your texting, what if you bumb into your grandma? and you dont apologize, then what?

    January 31, 2011 at 6:36 pm |
  682. Audrey

To Kathyrn, If you're doing something you know is wrong or will be fined, then just stop. I'm sure you have time in your very busy life to not walk across a street. If you want to endanger your life, that is within your natural right to liberty to do as you please. It's when you hurt other people that it's just wrong. And to jeremy, If a person stepped a few feet in front of your car with their eyes glued to the screen, it's just not physically possible to stop. If you want to spread the blame out like most Americans do, then it's the police's fault for not being there to watch you and tell you to be careful, it's the phone company's fault for giving you a texting phone, it's everyone's fault. That kind of argument just doesn't hold up.
To Massey's class, it's your own choice to not compensate for your "clumsiness," and you're free to be as clumsy as you choose. It's when your clumsiness hurts other people who were just going about their day that makes it illegal. Ali: Ha! Yes, we can be very stupid sometimes. And maybe the "stupid" people need a lesson, a lesson of a couple hundred dollars out of their pockets. How can we protect ourselves from people who don't care about others' safety?

I'd like to ask everyone here, if someone texting walked in front of your car obliviously and you swerved off the road and got hurt because of it, would you like them to get off scot-free? And to the people who don't like giving their money to the government: no one likes it. But if you want a government, you either have to follow the rules or pay for the mistakes. There's no "oh, well, I guess that conversation was really important, so we'll let you go" kind of mentality in the real world. No excuses, just cold, hard cash. And if you don't like the fine, what else are they going to do? Put you in detention? Make you stay after to write a letter to your parents telling them how you made a mistake and how you'll fix it? You'll probably be texting that letter to them anyway and get into an accident.

My final note: People got around fine before texting in the road. If they survived and made great livings and had satisfactory lives without an insane addiction to electronics, why can't we all just look up for a minute and just cross the road? Everyone in America likes to spread the blame, eg. it's the supermarket's fault for making unhealthy food so cheap, but we as the next generation need to step up and take responsibility for some of our actions.

    January 31, 2011 at 7:00 pm |
  683. Victoria

There needs to be some kind of punishment for people who could be hurt via distraction by cell phone. Sice we have done what we can to stop drivers we should focus on pedstrians.

    January 31, 2011 at 7:02 pm |
  684. Eric

Not at all! You should not be fined or sented to jail for texting and walking. I can see the safety reasons in this but you shouldn't be penilized so heavily. But texting and driving is a different story, people can actually get injured or killed.

    January 31, 2011 at 7:24 pm |
  685. Estefani

NO, DEFINITELY NOT. That should never even be considered as a law. The reason I say this is because we are human. And as a result of that we have rights. Because of those rights we can decide for ourselves what we should and should not do. Its on you if you decide to take out your phone and start texting in the middle of the street on a green light. You know your consequences to your choices. You are the only one to decide which one to choose from.

    January 31, 2011 at 7:31 pm |
  686. Josselyn

I believe that texting while walking is not grounds for penalization by ticket. People should be aware of their surroundings and realize what their actions are. In addition it will be difficult for an officer to determine whether a person is texting or not, especially with touch screen phones. The officer may not know whether they are giving urgent information to a friend or are reading or replying to an important email from their boss, the person who puts themselves in danger should be responsible for themselves without recieving a penalty.

    January 31, 2011 at 7:44 pm |
  687. Estefani

    To Mr.Kemper's Class
I completely agree with your perspective. The concept of the idea is good but goes way too far for the safety. It is our own responsibility and should not be fined.

    January 31, 2011 at 8:02 pm |
  688. Aaron

I personally think it's a horrible idea. If someone gets hit by a car, that's their fault, and their problem. If they make a law like that, then people would still do it, just not in a noticable way! People learn from their own mistakes so making a law like that wouldn't even accomplish that much.

    January 31, 2011 at 8:19 pm |
  689. Lexi

There should be a law with no txting while walking because who if you might I get ran over

    @Tyler
I know you say it's a distraction and all, but is it really worth paying money for it? And to top it off, its mainly teens texting while walking, so is it really fair to make their parents pay for something their child did? I really don't think that's fair, and i think this law is just pointless...

    January 31, 2011 at 8:27 pm |

I think yes, because its your responsibilty to make sure that when texting you make sure your at a place that your able to multitask so u can text and do other things.

Really ? Get a ticket for texting & walking thats ridiculous . Why should walkers get a ticket , i believe drivers should be the on getting a ticket they are a bigger danger the people walking & texting .

I think it is fine to be listening to an iPod while walking; it's good company! Texting while walking, however, is dangerous. You could easily run into a pole or into the street!

    January 31, 2011 at 8:42 pm |
  694. Armando

I think that texting while walking is pretty not a good law to be passed on, because what happens if a emergency really happens ? The thing is in that case why even by a cellphone , if you can't text and drive or text and walk. Next thing you know you wont be able to do nothing with a cellphone.

    January 31, 2011 at 8:49 pm |
  695. Xander

I think texting is very distracting and addicting, therefore it should not be used while walking. Some people think that it should not be illegal, but think about about it this way would you rather miss a text or a life.

    January 31, 2011 at 9:11 pm |
  696. Tyler

I don't think something like this should be made into a law. Kids just aren't being very smart, and I don't think they should be fined for this. It should should though be made into a warning to all kids and for law to enforce strict rules toward this No Tech. While Walking, but only to give off warnings. No one wants to go telling their parents they have to pay $100 because they walked across the street while texting.

i tdon't think there should be a law per se but there should at least some sort of punishment that would make us not want to doi it again. if you really think about it it wouldn't really be the driver's fault ifand when he hits you with the car but your own becaus eyou weren't paying attention. so yea. i think there should be some type of law or punishment for that but illegalness is too far in my opinion.

One terrible thing that could happen is if a person was walking across the street and a car came the person was texting and did not see the car the car then swiveled and ran into a gas station.I shouldent have to say more.

i think texting while we across the street should be issued a ticket but necessary when you are walking. we should pay 100% attention to the cars while you across the stree, lots of people lost their life and got hurt because they didn't do that. so cell phones or life, i rather across the street safely. i think this law can provent this kind of car accidents.

texting while walking is worse then making a call because texting your looking at the phone when your calling your looking ahead of you because the is by your ear but i still dont thing their should be a law.

Good! It's about time we become responsible parents. We need to teach our children better from early age to be aware of the dangers that happen while not paying attention as well for adults. It can't be that important of a text message that you are willing to loose your life or kill someone else due to ill education. I hope that one day cell phone service is automatically turned off while kids are in school.
I do realize that no system is perfect but with a little help and a conscious mind from adults we can help better this system before we resort to punishing humans for a lack of knowledge that can easily be taught.

i think texting and walking shouldnt be illegal because most people are able to multitask. its up to the type of person it is to state whether or not he or she would be able to handle the great task at texting and walking. and if any accidents occur because of this it would the driver and texter fault all simiply because its their responsible and option of their act.

i agree with sarah. it all depends on the person. if you're a great texter and have like great super vision power then go ahead and enjoy texting and walking. just be caution on the incidents that might happen.

i dont think ther should be a law because if someone gets hurt from texting while walking that is there own falt

    February 1, 2011 at 10:15 am |
  713. julia

i think texting and walking is a bad thing and people should be able to put there phone away while they walk across the street at least but i dont think they should get a ticket for texting i think they should get a warning then a ticket if they do it again

    February 1, 2011 at 10:41 am |
  714. Jordyn

Both people involved should be the one's to blame because texting is not important at all. Safety comes first. Also, the driver should be paying attention. But to keep things safe if you someone texting while walking or driving you should honk your horn and tell them to get off the phone, because like driving you could get seriously hurt.

  715. Sho

It's not right to restrict texting while walking, I think. It is surely dangerous to use electronic devices while crossing street, but we should be given the right to choose whether to use them or not, and then we should take responsibility for its outcome.
And to defend myself, I would say I don't know the law, or it was a emergency call or mail.

    February 1, 2011 at 11:07 am |
  716. Leanne

It is not at all right for that to become law. I would be fined for walking from school everday and about 20 of my other friends would too. we listen to music it's what makes us who we are. you can't take away our identity.

Its not cool to walk and text at the same time only God knows whats going to happen.

If you text while you walk alot ,get a walk and text app on your phone it uses the camera to let you see where you are going and when your done typing just send the message!

    February 1, 2011 at 11:54 am |
  719. amber

I would hate a law like texting, walking because you have to be safe out in the streets so if anything happens like a fight you would need to call 911 for help right. If I got caught I would say listen I need my phone if anything bad happened I would have to call my mom or the police

    February 1, 2011 at 1:22 pm |
  720. Stephen

I think texting and walking can be dangerous because you are not paying attention where you are walking and you can get hit by a car. If I got caught texting and walking,I would say that is dumb law because if you are listening to a mp3 player, you are still watching where you are going.

    February 1, 2011 at 1:28 pm |
  721. devon

i think a law like no texting would be weird, because you can look both ways and still listen, or talk, or text on your cellphone. if i were to get caught talking, or texting i would be really mad, and i would probaly sue them for taking my phone, and i phone. also i would probaly run from the cops, sike but anyway you really can not get hurt texting on the phone while crossing the street. also you no what law i think they should suspend standing on the corners, because when i was standing on the corner the police said to me, what you doing on the corner go home and i was going home. I was taking a bus home that day. i think that they should make that a rule. thank you bye

    February 1, 2011 at 1:29 pm |
  722. katera

I wouldn't think of a law such as getting a ticket for texting while walking.I wouldn't say it's fair but,I don't want to have to pay for for something that's going to help me or save my life.If I were to get caught texting and walking in a place where it's not permitted, the way I'd defend myself is "I'm sorry and I know what I did was wrong, and next time I'll remember what to do.Thank You 🙂 <3

i honestly think that senator carl krunger is crazy for thinking that we should get a tickect for walking and texting each other if wereally need to. what if a person who has a cellphone and is in trouble aand their cellphone is the only resource they have? how are they to ask for help? i live in a dangerous neighborhood and it wouldnt seem right not making a call if i get into trouble.if i got caught i would tell them i have a right as a citizen of america to talk on the phone if i am in trouble.

    February 1, 2011 at 1:35 pm |
  724. Tyler

Man I be very mad and upset if walking and txting, or listning to music was a law. Why cant you just listin to music. Me i would never walking a text because i could got hit by a car. So that's out of the situation. Look I can see everything when I walk and listin to music. Also i can hear everything. If I got caught texting where it isnt allowed too, I would curse the person that is aresting me. Cause its so stupid cause i would never walk and text. I might get hit by a car. Then i would get my family and stuff and move to LA. Then change my name and i'll be fine.

    February 1, 2011 at 1:37 pm |
  725. Yasin

I think that the law for texting while crossing is reasonable because, texting and crossing the street doesnt go together

    February 1, 2011 at 1:42 pm |
  726. WILLIAM

I think texting and walking is smart because textingor talking on the phone while walking is dangerous because you could be texting and not look to see if theres a car and get injured really bad. but,it"s also stupid because what if it is an important phone call

    February 1, 2011 at 1:42 pm |
  727. Taliah

There shouldn't be a law. If people want to text and walk why bother? The government as bigger fish to fry. we can't be spending money on something this ridiculous.

    February 1, 2011 at 1:43 pm |
  728. Jazzia

Why is the goverment paying attention to small things like this? This is so stupid! If the goverment wants to protect people why not stop the fight thats going on in egypt? That is something worth fighting for. Not some crazy law that makes people stop texting and walking. Why not like NOW stop texting and DRIVING???!!! Ugh. The goverment is having a slow moment!

    February 1, 2011 at 2:01 pm |
  729. Juan

there should not be a law against texting and walking when in a crosswalk. It takes two. Pedestrians should have enough common sense to now that they shouldn't be walking and texting anyways, and drivers should know that they need to watch for pedestrians, and always yield to them.

    February 1, 2011 at 3:27 pm |
  730. masie

no this is just idiotic eventually were not even gonna get are own privlages this is just rediculous

    February 1, 2011 at 3:30 pm |
  731. Heather

Music does not impair your vision. Texting does. If your crossing a street then yeah it should be a problem. But while just walking on the sidewalk I dont think thats right. there should be no law against listening to music. WHAT IS THIS WORLD COMING TO???

    February 1, 2011 at 4:13 pm |
  732. Hunter

I think that a person should be able to text and drive if they are good drivers.

    February 1, 2011 at 4:15 pm |
  733. Brandon

in this time of year there are very advanced phones out there and if they create this law people are not going to follow this law at all!!!!!!!

    February 1, 2011 at 4:18 pm |
  734. Stephen

I think they should make this a law. it's like texting and driving all over again

    February 1, 2011 at 4:35 pm |
  735. Dally

If their really gonna make this a law then just same some time and send me to jail!!

    February 1, 2011 at 5:24 pm |
  736. hailey

i would say for safety issues ,well what i am saying is that if people want to do it.let them do it free will. just say that you cant be blamed for there own actions because everyone is accountable for there own.

    February 1, 2011 at 5:28 pm |
  737. Ashley

Yes they should have a law like this, come on people half the stuff we send isnt important! whats your choice, getting hit by a car because you were texting something dumb, OR waiting until you get home to text and still have your life?

    February 1, 2011 at 6:01 pm |
  738. Elizabeth

If you decided to go out and start texting and walking out in the cities, you really ought to get a ticket because it'll teach you to value your life. But if you're out here in the country, it shouldn't be AS important as getting as getting a ticket for texting and driving. There are less people to ticket who will go out and walk where they CAN text and walk.

    February 1, 2011 at 6:12 pm |
  739. Amber

Sereously!!!!!! If you get hit by a car or fall into a foutain it's YOUR own fualt. You are the one who is looking on that little screen not paying attention to a bright red car running you over! I say " Text ( or talk ) at your on risk." The driver is driving, the foutain is flowing but your the one texting it is totally your responsibility to whatever may happen. I don't think they should give tickets because it's your fualt if you get hurt.

    February 1, 2011 at 7:11 pm |
  740. stephanie

I think yes because they can get hurt from cars

    February 1, 2011 at 7:14 pm |
  741. stephanie

No because some kids like it.It is not nice to take it away when kids think it is fun and cool.

    February 1, 2011 at 7:18 pm |
  742. Jojo

Well I see why they would want to pass this law but still its just really silly!!!

    February 1, 2011 at 7:41 pm |
  743. Frank

I don't really think there should be a law against texting while walking. Kids at my school do it as soon as school is out. If this law was passed then they would all get tickets. Why would you give a ticket to a kid who wasn't really doing something that wrong.

    February 1, 2011 at 7:49 pm |
  744. Ellie

I text and walk all the time. I would get a ticket every day! It is my decision to walk and text. I believe that it would be my fault if something happened while I was texting. I also believe that it is important to not text and drive. These are totally different issues so don’t address them the same!

    February 1, 2011 at 7:56 pm |
  745. Adriana

' wouldn't be suprised if in the future they'd be giving tickets for Walking!!!

    February 1, 2011 at 8:05 pm |
  746. Emmett

    NO
I text like 24-7 i would never last i would have like 200 tickets all ready it would suck real bad i would be poor because of it.

    February 1, 2011 at 8:06 pm |
  747. Maddy

I think that people should be held responsible to their actions and learn the results, but giving tickets is outragous.

    February 1, 2011 at 9:04 pm |
  748. Itzel

i think it is crazy that they want to fine you $100 for texting and/or talking on the phone. I understand they want us to be safe but they went to the extreme . i know we should look where were going and our surroundings but we should just get fined when were texting or walking when we aren't suppose to walk and the light is on green for the cars. Also IF WE DO GET FINED IT SHOULD NOT BE $100,IT SHOULD BE $30 0R LESS

    February 1, 2011 at 9:30 pm |
  749. Brendan

Texting and listening to music while walking should be legal because otherwise there is almost no time left to. Besides, a lot of people listen to their I-pods or text on the way to school or work

    February 1, 2011 at 9:54 pm |
  750. Itzel

I agree completely with DT .If someone is walking by the street with n electronic it is common sense to pay attention to your surroundings and even when pedestrians do pay attention it is usually the drivers fault because they don't pay for doing something else. Also we are just people walking they have huge cars that can run over someone and kill them, if they have a car that means they should know ow to use the breaks.

    February 1, 2011 at 10:02 pm |
  751. Hannah

I understand not being able to text while your driving, but I think this is going a little to far.very few people are going to follow it why make it a law?

    February 1, 2011 at 10:23 pm |
  752. Jayne

There should be a law against walking and texting in big cities such as Seattle or New York because people could be hit by oncoming traffic or walk in to the middle of a busy street.

    February 1, 2011 at 10:31 pm |
  753. Betsy

walking and texting, and you get a ticket.
well i see now my dad has the law on his side. and i'm still not getting a phone. talk about idiotic!

    February 2, 2011 at 8:00 am |
  754. devonte

why should that be a law what i mean is pepole text wile walking all the time so it shouldint be a l

    February 2, 2011 at 10:02 am |
  755. ANTONINI

I don't think people should get a ticket for walking and texting because if they get hurt or something like that it is their falt.

    February 2, 2011 at 11:32 am |
  756. Nathan

i don't think it should be taught because it messes you up and confusses people i don't like it my self.

    February 2, 2011 at 2:01 pm |
  757. Alex

I think cursive should be taught so we can still make checks

    February 2, 2011 at 2:03 pm |
  758. Adrianne

Like many teachers have told me you just can't multi-task. You can try but you won't be doing every thing that you can really do. If you text and walk you could actually cause more accidents then if you ran across the street without looking both ways, because you don't know when the light switches if your talking.

    February 2, 2011 at 2:38 pm |
  759. Nicole

First of all,if your on the phone, you can still see if a cars about to run over you if you, and second of all it should be the drivers watching out pedestrians.

    February 2, 2011 at 2:55 pm |
  760. Alston

I agree to the law, if someone is walking across the street and a car is coming through the car might hit someone. That would cause the person thta got hit trouble and the person driving the car.

    February 2, 2011 at 3:14 pm |
  761. Jayla

If you text while walking you could get hit by a car and get seriously injured. Some people say it is the drivers fault but some people just walk into the road even when it says DO NOT WALK.

    February 2, 2011 at 4:24 pm |
  762. donald

i say no because we can just look up once and a while but trust me.... i never walk across a street and text at the same time thats WAY TO DANGEROUS!!!

    February 2, 2011 at 4:28 pm |
  763. Kaitielyn

Walking? I can see why for driving, and I guess it does matter WHERE you're walking. Okay, if you're walking on a busy street, then you should have the sense not to text when you can be run over or something.

    February 2, 2011 at 4:50 pm |
  764. alydia

i really dont think it should because we will have to use it sometime or later and really i think its a really good way of showing good pendminship

    February 2, 2011 at 5:00 pm |
  765. Bernadette

i think it should be against the law texting and walking because you can get hurt or you could run into someone. But i don't think you should get a ticket because some people cant afford speeding fines in the 1st place they should not have to pay a ticket for texting and walking.

    February 2, 2011 at 5:07 pm |
  766. andrea

i think it shoukd be the student's choice if they want to write in cursive... and not the teachers choice or the states at all... if they want to learn it let them if they don't let them...

    February 2, 2011 at 6:20 pm |
  767. Madeline

I think that they should not allow it. When people are crossing the street, A car might not see the red light and go speeding through the crosswalk and the pedrestrian might not see them while texting and get injured or maybe even die.

    February 2, 2011 at 6:24 pm |
  768. Jose

I agree with hailey, it is the own persons fault but at the same time, it is also the drivers fault for not seeing hazards such as pedestrians who are not paying attention to the events going on around them such as texting but i dont believe a fine should be issued

    February 2, 2011 at 6:32 pm |
  769. Kenny

I think giving tickets out to the people who text while walking is dumb because every one text while walking they even do it while driving and plus with this bad economy no one will pay their ticket and the only people who will be benefiting from all this will be the goverment or the state who ever so in my opinion this should not be a law because a lot of people would be behind bars for no reason
    THANK YOU 🙂

    February 2, 2011 at 6:37 pm |
  770. Kenny

I agree with Dally just send half of the population to jail because every one is still going to keep on doing it and no one is going to pay their tickets or stop texting while walking i get the point of the law of texting while driving but texting while walking is that what its come to thats how bad we are economically that we have to make laws that dont make sense just to get some cash for the government

    February 2, 2011 at 6:43 pm |
  771. Ashlyn

Texting and walking is a dangerous thing. Don't try it. You shouldn't be able to walk and text at the same.....

    February 2, 2011 at 8:08 pm |
  772. Nathan

Yes there should be a law that there is no texting while crossing the road. any time a driver could be drunk and not focusing. then its the walking persons fault.

    February 2, 2011 at 9:28 pm |
  773. Kameron

Getting a ticket for texting while walking is a good idea. People won't dislike you for not texting you back. Pedestrians won't be so confused and cars won't have to watch out for people crossing as much.

    February 2, 2011 at 10:04 pm |
  774. sofia

Yes, I think there should be a law about texting and driving, I mean come on people get hit all the time because they aren't paying attention when they are walking. But, there should also be a fine to the driver becaues they didn't stop or honk there horn. but, yes I think there should be a law no texting while crossing a street at least. And if someone does get hit the fine should be sent to the driver and the person doing it.

    February 2, 2011 at 10:36 pm |
  775. Cece

If it was a law it would be suitable especially for New York. If your listening to your Ipod or MP3 player you cant even hear a car coming. And if you're texting you're not watching and even if a car comes speeding towards you you won't have any time to get away.

    February 2, 2011 at 10:37 pm |
