I think the people in Tuscon will be a little more careful. It was a bad thing that happened

the lesson that can be learned that is no matter what, violence is not a option and people need to be more respectful of others beliefs and ideas. doesn't matter if you republican or democratic. people need to learn to control themselves, even if that means keeping your opinion to yourself to be respectfull.

This makes me very sad because some innocent people had to die because someone was upset. So now I think all of us have learned that we just need to just be happy with each other because we are probably one of the best places to live in the world. I just hope people will soon learn this.

Be careful on what you do. If you have a gun you should first have control. Without control no one would be able to predict what tragedy you might cause. CONTROL then GUNS.

I think people take life to serious and they dont know how to let their anger out other than wanting to kill

Violence is NOT an option! The Lessons are that your beliefs don't matter in this World we know as Today! My Mom is Republican and My Dad is Democratic! I Don't think it matters!

Doesn't matter who you are that doesn't mean you can run around a grocery store shooting people.

The lesson that can be learned is be more protective when important people come to visit, exspecially when all the people who got hurt who didn't deserve to! It doesn't matter what color you are, a rebublican, or a democratic, or religon. This shouldn't of happend people need to be more careful about what they say or do.

When things like this happen, I often wonder "what were the signs that he was going to do this and why could no one see them?" The event honestly scares me because it could happen at anytime, anywhere without you having any idea until it's over.
I don't believe in the death penalty because I think it is cruel and inhumane, but so is what he did to the victims of the shooting.
The entire situation has me a bit torn.

This is another reason to be careful of the people around you. You never know what might be going on in peoples heads, what they are thinking, and what they are capable of- not only physically, but mentally and emotionally.
The smile on his face when his mugshot was taken shows he felt no regret about what he did to those people.

If you don't feel regret for killing people who are innocent you don't feel regret for anything. I think that what he did was wrong no matter why he did it. Taking down people that you don't know for no typical reson is crazy. It's sad that this happens to these people.

Why hould peoples' lives be risked. Violence Is not and is never the answerto any situation. No matter what, even though you don't like republicans or democrats, it should not be taken with violence. I learned that in no way, violence is not the way to go.

That was a terrible thing that happened in Tuson. May they be able to over come this terrible thing. The only lesson is that people need to think about what they do before they do that terrible thing.

I think it is out rages for somone to feel the need to kill inocent people ! what did they do to him nothin so he had no right to shoot !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The lesson I think is that no matter what you believe the faith is always the same thing. Violence is scary but republican and democrat are opinions.

I live in arizona and i think this was totally unnessesary just because you might not like someone dosnt mean you have to shoot them and everyone around them. This was totally wrong and i think the lesson that needs to be learned is that no matter what vilonce is not an option if i was the guy who shoot them i would of just went up to her and said hey i really dont like you say what your fellings its a free country you aloud to do what you want but i say just because its a free country dosnt mean you can get away with everything

The lesson is, Violence is not an option, there's other ways. People need to control themsleves, Be respectful. The world has to learn that, or this will be every other day. that won't be fun.

There is no excuse for acts of violence such as this. This has proven to be a flaw in US defense; there wasn't enough security at this gathering to prevent it from happening. But if we lived in a civilized country, we wouldn't NEED that security. In the future, I would hope that we could prevent something like this from happening again.

I think that the guy who shot all those people should feel really bad because he shot a little girl! All those people were inasent.

i think that people should not be scared of this problem because its not something that you should not be scared of because another bad guy in jail and i think that the little girl had nothing to do with it.

I think you could benfit from the Arizonia shooting because, no one can go anywhere without thinking about death. No one is safe when they go anywhere. You never know whats going to come. Not everyone can be trusted.

It is a very tragic moment in history and the moment of silence on monday was just a few moment to honor all of the people who were wounded or who passed. The young and the old were all effected by this and it should of never happened or ever hapless again for that matter. R.I.P for who all lost there lives and sorry for all who have lost love ones also we don't think if we werenthere and that was a family member of ours but we can't stop every thing that comes out way and this is one of third things.

    January 11, 2011 at 10:04 pm |
  23. Kelsey

Why are people so vilent these days? There are other options but most people take the wrong one. shouldnt we work on trying to be kinder and more respectful in this world?

    January 11, 2011 at 10:08 pm |
  24. Kelsey

Also a lesson that can be learned is that this world isn't perfect so we all need to take safety checks.

When we came over in 1620, we learned to have religious tolerance. I think it's time we learn political tolerance almost 400 years later. It's strange to think of someone shooting randomly at a grocery store, because most of us wouldn't think about doing that same thing. You have to wonder what was going through that shooter's mind when he shot and killed a 9 year old.

I was sorry to hear the news. I was afraid of the shooting. So i couldn't sleep easily. The people who were killed and wounded by the shooter including representative Giffords can help to realize the dangerous violence in our happy lives. I appreciate them to know the dangerousness of violence.

This shooting showed a lot of people that violence is never the answer and that politicians should never be killed for what they do.

I think people can learn from this. people need to be restpectful of others jas which they want in return. just like the golden rule. People also need to ber able to control themselves and watch what they do and say.

This is what happens when you have freedom to carry arms....why arent there safeguards to insure that a person who posses a gun licence must have a cert of mental stabilty. – Liza, London, 10/1/2011 16:36 And yet, Liza, in Switzerland it is a legal requirement for most of the male population (military reservists) to keep their personal , often large caliber automatic, weapons at home! Why is Switzerland not also littered with bodies? It does not automatically follow that the carrying of arms leads to this type of lunacy. However it probably does help to ensure that Switzerland will continue to be the most democratic country in Europe where the state can make no major decision without first consulting the people in a referendum. Unlike here!

There is too much violence and I don't blame video games or T.V. It's society's fault for setting a bad example. But, there really isn't much of a lesson, just that violence is bad and to deal with your problems before they make you do something you will regret

I think its really gonna show how different American people act.
It shows how people can 'over react' to certin things and even if there wasnt a politcal motive there still has to be a reason why he did that. He cant just blame it on a 'minal illness' because everyone can say no. It seemed like he had thought about the shooting before maybe not with the same people or place but it seems like to me that he had time to really think over what he was going to do.

I think that it is sad that all these people had to die for nothing. And that the guy that saved his wife is an amazing person, and the other people that risked theirs are wonderful too! I hope the people that got hurt get better.

I think that whoever did this should go straight to jail especialy for killing a nine year old girl that girl should have not lost her like that quick

    January 12, 2011 at 7:16 am |
  38. Michael

What happened in Arizona was rare and tragic. It doesn't matter if you are republican or democratic this shouldn't happen for neither of them. The nine year- old girl followed by the staff shouldnt've been shot.

I feel like the country is shocked, we think of ourselves in a pretty safe environment and the fact that this happened is a huge thing. It makes us think of what we have to do to improve in the U.S. I give my blessings to all family and friends who were effected someway either by death or something other and hope they will pull through. God bless America!

This only shows you how bad things are getting when it comes to the mental soundness of some people. The guy shot a 9-year-old girl. Just think about what kind of pain the parents must be in. Congressman or no congressman, the parents still lost their child.

    January 12, 2011 at 9:06 am |
  41. Dylan

I personally don't think any lessons were learned from it because there was no point for the shooter to do that in the first place.

I don't think it makes sense for this guy to kill so many people, also I think this guy should stay in jail for the rest of his life.

That story is sad, how could someone live knowing that they killed a 9 year old girl...I know that if i even thought of hurting or killing someone, I wouldn't even be able to live with myself!!!

i think that if i were any one of those people i would be mad and sad that a guy would even think about doing that

While limiting the number of bullets in a clip, you can't really limit the number of shootings. people are just going to use more bullets, and do the same number of shootings, if not more.

    January 12, 2011 at 10:32 am |
  47. Taylor

I don't know why that happened but ether way I think that there thould have been more security, because that person was just able to walk up in plain sight and shoot.

    January 12, 2011 at 10:35 am |
  48. dean

People are not supposed to be shoot or killed, even if u are angry with your self or your past. People first of all should not be killing people, they should limit the use of magazines per gun so there should be less killings.

    January 12, 2011 at 10:36 am |
  49. Casey

I think this is sad because innocent people had to die just because someone couldn't control their anger problems. This is an important way of showing that violence is not the solution to any problem. If this is how people always handled their problems people would be dying ever day. Also I Want to now how someone that may have mental problems gets a gun.

  50. marissa

I think that this was very sad that just becasue someone was mad dosent mean that they can just go kill six people injure twelve and badly injure a U.S. senator.I think that the lesson that should be learned is that everyone should be happy with the people around us and the free country that we live in.I don't think that this was a political problem.

    January 12, 2011 at 10:36 am |
  51. Jahlil

The guy who shoot the 9 year old and many more should be put in a mental hospital to be tested. If he is not because once he is bailed he will just continue killing innocent people and children

    January 12, 2011 at 10:55 am |
  56. Brandon

I mean if you are to think about it. There are crazy people in this world. We should always keep the right to bare arms. If we dont keep that, we wouldnt have the freedom that we have now.

The tuscon Arizona shooting shows us what is happening in america.
It shows america is'nt the one that we used to live in. My Dad always says that americas golden age has passed. Thats probably true. The way I see it america has'nt passed it's golden age.You see there is two sides to every story. Some blame the shooter as a consperacy theorist. The truth is we kids are the future and if we start changing the world now, there may be a golden age once more. Now i'm not saying that america will be perfect, but it could be The America that our ansestors once Knew.

Yes i beleive that there is a lesson that we shouldnt freak out because some peson came to talk to us we dont need to shoot them to make are selves feel better because it is like bullying but with a gun.

People need to know about these things and the horror people can bring to other people. When a fellow citizen of mankind gets crazy from anger and obtains a firearm bad things will happen.

I think that people get to political and take it to the next level and sometimes it costs people there lives or the lives of loved ones. They should have also checked the people who went to the place just to make sure maybe if they did, this incident wouldn't have happened.

I feel as if the Arizona shooting was a very scary and sad thing. There was absolutley no reason for this guy, who had to connections to the congresswomen herself to shoot her and kill other people. I think that there is no lesson to be taught or learned, just that people that are sketchy should be watched closley so nothing like this ever happens again. Everything seems to be so violent today and it should change. It was a sad time and people need to pay more attention to those people who set off a red flag. I feel terrible for that congresswomen and especially the 9 year old girl and her parents that had to go through that loss.

    January 12, 2011 at 12:30 pm |
  72. Hunter

I think that the man must have been going through some tough times in his life. I mean we all do he just took a different approach on how to handle it. People have their own opinions about political parties and would rather have one person have the spot then another but this is going way to far.

    January 12, 2011 at 12:58 pm |
  73. Chris

i think it would have been better to do the community meetings in a building so that wouldn't have as big of a chance to happen again. Also us really good guards to check people before they came to make sure no one had any kind of weapon or anything that can be used like a weapon.

    January 12, 2011 at 12:59 pm |
  74. Luke

I dont think that there are any lessons that can be learned from this. Nobody could of done anything, just someone that had a bad day (or was under the influence) couldnt control there anger, so they went out and did this. I dont think it was under political influence, if it was it would have happened sooner.

    January 12, 2011 at 12:59 pm |
  75. Rebekah

I think what happened to those people was horrible. i don't think it had to do with anything political. i think the guy was just a little bit crazy.

    January 12, 2011 at 1:00 pm |

I think people should watch what they say around certain people because some people culold be really insecure about goverment stuff

    January 12, 2011 at 1:01 pm |

I think we learned that if it was related to political issues, that some people should be nicer. And even if it wasn't they really should be nicer anyway...

  81. Sydnee

I think people should really not do things like this I understand that some people do need help and even if they dont people dont think about what there about t do. What i think people should learn from this is think before you act becuase you can really hurt someone by doing something you dont mean to do.

Something this tragic can only be beneficial if we come together and learn from the mistakes we have made. It was a horrible event, but we must come through it stronger than we were before.

  83. Nakia

I think there are lessons we can learn from this. I think that now everybody know that they have to watch what they say about anyplace and if they want to say somthing do it a little more privetly.

    January 12, 2011 at 1:03 pm |
  84. Devon

I believe the shooting was bad for the country because people can have the wrong political view about the United States and can think wrongly of us and also begin to make stereotypes about us just because a man with a unbalanced mental illness shot up a place in Arizona. It's not that bad in my view though because in Afghanistan this happens daily. It's still pretty bad though to think this happened in our own country.

    January 12, 2011 at 1:04 pm |
  85. Chad

This shooting in Arizona, was a perfect example of how someone who has a conflicting ideas can take their anger out on innocent people. Not only did he shoot government officials, but he also shot a nine year old. Unfortunately when things like this happen we see the ugly side of America and what people are capable of doing. Let’s hope that something like this won't happen again.

I believe, That the shooting in Arizona is terrible. I think that it was partly enocomic veiws, and I also think that he migh have been just straight up crazy. But the thing is that every body should have more security and take peoples threats more seriously.

I think it was uncalled for that someone that was trying to make a difference in our nation to be shot do to someone not agreeing with what she had to say.

I think that this could go either way or even both, either he was psyco or he didn't like this representative or politics. Honestly I think he was just coocoo and felt like killing some people and if that is the case, then he needs some serious help.

I think the situation in Arizona is very sad and it makes me mad because we are suppose to be a More PERFECT UNION not a place were shooting and crims happen. Idk if you agree but yeah

I think that the shooting in Arizona is terrible and that if you have a gun then you need to have responciblity for it and that meens no matter what happens like not bellieving in something that someone else does.

    January 12, 2011 at 1:49 pm |
  95. Kobe

I think that it's messed up that someone would do something like that it's probably because he has some problems and didn't do anything about it.

i was very sad to here what happend with the shooting the families who were affected by this traidy are in my prayers.

    January 12, 2011 at 1:50 pm |
  97. Josh

People do say that the shooting was encouraged by the political talk shows, but since it is almost impossible to test for evidence on the account of ideas in the mind, we will never know. From the given information, it seems more likely that yes, the shooter was indeed mentally unstable. One question is, what set him off?

    January 12, 2011 at 1:52 pm |
  98. Anna

After watching what happen to Congresswoman we can take action for our community and our world to prevent this happing just to change a little at a time we learned that we need to watch to the special people that make this world and community safe for everyone to live in. Pray for everyone who got shoot and injured in this Shooting in Arizona!!!

    January 12, 2011 at 1:53 pm |
  99. Griffin

I personally dont think the attack had anything to do with the congresswoman's policies as much as it had to do with a mans altered mental status. Do I think that we can learn anything from this, maby we can beef up security around events like this so the man with the gun doesn't get in in the first place. He was obviously not trying to assassinate her for any good reason, he was just a sociopath who wanted to do something big.

I think it was very tragic and we know more of what our nation is becoming.

I think that the only lesson learned is to keep a watchful eye out for everything that happens around us. Maybe we can be more prepared fo stuf like this.

I think that we all mite have learned something from what had happened.
Maybe now somethings will change.Maybe someone in the world will look at this and see that something needs to be done.

  106. Pride

I do not think that there is a lesson to be learned from what has happened. There is nothing anyone can really do to stop random attacks like this... Maybe the people who take part in the government will take special precautions when interacting with the public...

    January 12, 2011 at 2:50 pm |
  107. Panda

I think that the lesson is important people should get more portection when outside.

    January 12, 2011 at 3:01 pm |
  108. Tim

I think that the only lesson to be learned is to watch suspicious people or people that may have some sort of mental issues. But I also believe that there was some sort of political tie to this. Maybe the Representative did something that the man didn't like in that case I think that we should always know where the representatives are going and what they are doing.

    January 12, 2011 at 3:08 pm |
  109. Emily

My toughts on the Arizona shooting are that the man who did it had so much hatred stored up in side of him and he decieded to do what he did. But i think that that was the worst thing that he could have done!! He never thought of the devestation that he would cause!!

    January 12, 2011 at 3:09 pm |
  110. Elaine

I think that there is a lesson to be learned from this and it is that everybody should watch what is happening around them and take extra procautions for things like this.

  111. Candi

My opinion about the delemias is that wait for the goverment to report to us and tell us what was trully happening. Also for the person who did this I'd truly like to understand what was going through their mind.

    January 12, 2011 at 3:11 pm |
  112. brien

I think that the lesson here is that it doesn't matter what you and only you want. It matters what everybody together wants and that what happens just happens. That doesn't give anybody anywhere the reason to kill anybody I don't care who they are.

    January 12, 2011 at 3:15 pm |
  113. Dick

I feel very sorry for the families of those in the shooting. It was a very bad thing and I hope it will never happen again. What if that was a member of my family?

  114. Brandon

Why did the guy even get a chance to kill 6 people and hurt 14 others, ware were the guards when all of this happened. And I think that he should be in prison for a really long time for killing that little girl.

    January 12, 2011 at 3:17 pm |
  115. Danika

I think that there isn't a lot that we can do to prevent things like this from happening. It is hard to control them because you can't control the person. You can't change what one person believes or what the have in their head to do in their life.

    January 12, 2011 at 3:17 pm |
  116. Hannah

I think that lessons that can be learned from the Arizona shooting is that there are good people and bad people in this world and that even though you are angry at someone dose not make it ok to out and kill some one or several people and if you really think that because you are mad at someone you are going to try and go and kill them then you may need help.

    January 12, 2011 at 3:17 pm |
  117. Bailey

First off I'd like to say, what would make a person feel the need to do this?! I think all we can do is try to keep a watchful eye out for anything! This is something that is devestating to tons of people and families and we should do all we can to prevent it.

    January 12, 2011 at 3:20 pm |
  118. Hanna

The shooting in Arizona was horrible. Other people shouldn't suffer because of someone else's problem. Sometimes I really wish guns weren't invented!

  121. payton

i think there is no lesson you just have to keep an eye out for people who do these things..nobody thinks the same as someone else so you can never know what will happen.all you can do is try and be as safe as possible.

    January 12, 2011 at 4:04 pm |
  122. Coolio

I think the lesson that can be learned is these guys need to be reported when they are showing signs of being disturbed as he was.

    January 12, 2011 at 4:05 pm |
  123. Julia

The shooting in Arizona was a tragedy that should not be repeated. People have to realize that violence will not fix anything. By shooting the federal judge and Giffords, the suspect accomplished nothing except possibly going to death row! The lesson to be learned is that politics have to stay clean to work. If we start getting violence involved in it then bad things happen. My heart goes out to everyone in Arizona right now, whether they were related to someone who was shot/wounded or just in the community!

    January 12, 2011 at 4:17 pm |
  124. Alison

We can learn that we all have to work together or things like shootings will happen and other people will have to pay the price for you not liking something.

    January 12, 2011 at 4:22 pm |
  125. Max

Why would anyone think they have the right to go around shooting anyone? This is without a doubt a tragedy! Mrs. Giffords will be in my prayers.

  126. Gracie

I think it's just plain wrong. Knowing that our country may not be safe anymore is scary. I don't want to wake up knowing I might be killed. I don't want to risk my life for my family.

    January 12, 2011 at 4:54 pm |
  127. Jasmine

I think the lesson is that everyone is going to have separate opinions and that will never change you just have to learn to accept and respect that.

    January 12, 2011 at 4:59 pm |
  128. Jesse

I think we should use this to remind us that this world is dangerous and that our schools and even our whole county should strive for safety.

    January 12, 2011 at 5:02 pm |
  129. Talia

You know some times we should all think about what we do before we do it. The guy who shot all these people only had one person in mind. He shot them because he had the power. But just because you have the power to do something doesn't meen you should do it. With great power comes great responsibility. :]

    January 12, 2011 at 5:08 pm |
  130. MiCayla

Not to shoot anybody because it can be harmful. The shooter had no rights to kill a 9 year old girl. I hope he learn his lesson. I pray for the parent of the 9 year old girl.

  131. DJ

I think that this guy was just crazy. He may have had a problem with the people saying stuff about the politics but, there reallly is no reason for anyone to have done this.

    January 12, 2011 at 6:05 pm |
  132. Morgan

There are many lessons to be learned from the Arizona shooting, one of the most important is that even if the shooter did hate Mrs. Gliffords, or any other Congressman, Judge, or Governor, no matter what they fight for, the penalty should never be death. Everyone has their own opinions and you must learn to accept that.

    January 12, 2011 at 6:10 pm |
  133. Nora

Maybe there are some lessons to be learned, but killing is still killing, and killing is against the law. I feel no sympathy for the man, whether he has mental problems or not.

    January 12, 2011 at 6:17 pm |
  134. Jack

Now that this attack has happened, I thinking that police should try to protect political figures when they are out in THE open.

    January 12, 2011 at 6:53 pm |
  135. Annie

I think the shooting was horrible! People should learn that you need to be prepared for an emergency at all times. Nobody knew this was going to happen, but it did. 6 too many people were killed and 14 too many wounded. ALWAYS BE PREPARED! It's not always possible to stop it, but we should try.

    January 12, 2011 at 6:54 pm |
  136. Sasha

I feel that this could have all been prevented much earlier on, probably starting with the parents & up bringing. It is obviously sad to all the lives lost, but there is nothing to do when a child has such angry & deranged feelings & thoughts. No one could have prevented his way of life, including the cliques he stuck with, as well as the family he was born into.

    January 12, 2011 at 6:54 pm |
  137. Nick

To suggest that the shooter was motivated by political rhetoric is irrelevant. Political rhetoric is not meant to incite violence and anybody who commits a violent act should be directly blamed for their actions, not the voices in the media whether they are conservative or liberal.

    January 12, 2011 at 6:56 pm |
  138. Luce

I don't see why he would do such a thing and get away with it, mental or not. I really hope the congress woman is okay, and that she gets a great full recovery. I think the shooter should be arrested, and that everyone should know that violence is not the answer, because sometimes, well, people get severly hurt. It definetly wasn't worth it in my oppinion, shooting a congress women because of animosity and getting a lifelong sentance of jail (what he diserves), opposed to a better way to expose the 'apparent' unfairness in her ways or whatever she did for the "random" shooter to shoot her. Though, I don't believe what happened happened without a motive . . . .

    January 12, 2011 at 6:57 pm |
  139. Luce

I also very much agree with Jack, about how political figures should be protected, because they are us. We are as good as our government and we need every one of them. Hope the congress women gets better!

  142. Taylor

Things like this are gonna happen until WE learn to have better security.... OR when other people learn that trying to kill or assassinate someone is not gonna do any good and it just harms others. If they are mad, or just have issues, than they need to talk, not let their anger out by hurting or killing someone or something.

    January 12, 2011 at 7:16 pm |
  143. Angie

It is terrible what the shooter did to Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and the other victims involved in this tragedy. All we can hope for is the best for Giffords and hope the shooter is put behind bars. He has broken laws. We learn to be very careful, and what our parents say to us, don't talk to strangers, is very true.

    January 12, 2011 at 7:17 pm |
  144. xander

a political speech may have influenced the shooter, but he was probably mostly insane. an angering government action may have pushed him over the top

I believe that it was out of place for the sheriff to voice his opinion, however he does bring a point. If we have political figures and the media shouting statements like "Don't retreat,Reload!" we'll have people who are unstable hearing this, and doing something violent.

Yes there is. There should be a gun check before the speech to make sure that no one can hurt anyone if this happens it could save many lifes and prevent shootings.Shootings could still happen but they would rarely happen so i think there should be a gun check if not we should try are hardest to be safe.

  152. emalee

its just wrong that the shooter would shoot and injure random people that could actually be innocent and that might not even have a clue on what is going on or the political speech might of motivated the shooter and just started shooting people randomly.

    January 12, 2011 at 8:23 pm |
  153. Anonymous

This shows that some people are heartless. That shooter might have been crazy, but thet doesnt excuse what hes done. On the other hand, all the people who feel sorrow have a right to do so because that killed many innocent people. To some of you six may not seem like many, to me those people are priceless. Those people had their whole lives to live, but they were cut short because of that shooter. They had families who loved them and miss them.

I think no matter what you have no right to kill someone. Even though you don't get your way you still don't have a right.

    January 12, 2011 at 8:27 pm |
  155. Allie

I believe the one lesson to be learned is that anything can be turned into a political battle or the blame game. Even a tragedy such as this is being used to try to hurt certain political parties and denounce the media as the cause of crimes such of this. This is showing what some have feared for a long time, america is far too politically divided. It used to be tragedy would bring us together but now it is being used as a wedge to drive us apart.

If you ask me,i think that the man who did this to Arizona should be gaven the death penalty or sentenced to jail for life.To kill someone is a terrible crime but to kill a congress women/man is a horrifying crime.

    January 12, 2011 at 9:31 pm |
  159. Tyler

I think members of both parties in congress will learn to stop making hateful remarks about each other. Clearly, this is not a game, and there are some needed changes to prevent this from happening again. Hopefully our government will learn from this and actually start working together.

I thought this wasn't right at all, the shooting that he did was insane!
I heard how that 9 yr. old had gotten elected for student council and she went and met the congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords to talk about how it actually works in the government but was shot for doing nothing, very sad,

What happened on Monday in Tuscon, Arizona was a very tragic moment. The problem that needs to be addressed here is how a psycho was even able to get his hands on a gun. Our society can't afford to have dangerous people able to obtain weapons and be able to use them to kill innocent others. Hopefully this event will used as a warning to take action to try to reduce the violence i this world. Lastly, these poor families who had lost there loved ones, should receive the support from the community they deserve.

Violence happens everywhere, but I find it strange that if one of the people harmed isn't Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, I doubt that the media wouldn't care as much. It would probably be just another shooting in the world that people and the government would overlook.

  165. malika

I feel very bad for the families of the people who died and its very very cruel for the guy who killed and ruined the happiness of others. The last thing I want is this country having one thing common with all the others : VIOLENCE

    January 12, 2011 at 10:11 pm |
  166. Erin

Just because you have hatred towards someone does not mean that you can just take their lives. Just like the saying "Violence is not the answer", some people seem to disagree. The shooter's voice is only one in a million, but he seems to think that only his voice counts. Well, it doesn't. The nine year old that got killed from this was born on a tragic day (9/11), and killed tragically. One lesson that I have learned is that life is too short to hold anger against someone.

i believe that there can be something to be learned here , but not for the citizen's ,but for the security in charge of protecting the senator. There should have been more security than there was, because with the security they had it would have been no problem for some ordinary guy to come up and do what he did.

    January 12, 2011 at 10:53 pm |
  169. Stella

I think he was not thinking when he tried to carry out his assassination. I'm sure he never intended to kill all of those people, but he did. He shouldn't have tried anything in the first place because committing murder is just wrong. I'm sure many families were hurt by their losses. He should not get away without a punishment for this. I think that he should be sentenced to life in prison, for not only attempting assassination but, also for the murders he committed. If he got away with it, I would be very upset with our justice system.

As I watched the Memorial Service tonight on CNN I was in awe of the unity that filled the building. The words of President Obama were moving and healing to all who listened. In times of great tragedy, we, as Americans, come together to support and sustain each other in our grief. Tonight was another example of how great loss and tragedy can help a nation come together and learn once again, the importance of love within a family, a city, and a nation.

    January 12, 2011 at 11:19 pm |
  171. Alan

I think that open events like this should have a little more security to them. There is no reason why a person should be able to walk on into public meet and greet event with a gun. Also this shows the risk of having open greet events, cause there people out there that are willing to go to extrem measures to get what they want.

    January 12, 2011 at 11:29 pm |
  172. Natalie

I think that this never should have happened. I dont understand why no one did anything about the way he was acting. Although he had enough sanity to know that he was shooting at the congresswoman he still should be punished.

    January 12, 2011 at 11:36 pm |
  173. Mary

This could really happen to anyone but most likely to people in office. It is always a tragedy when some one dies.I don't think a speech is why the shooting occurred otherwise I don't think anyone else would be hurt or not as many people.

  174. Domineek

A sign of how things are in the world. The fact that things with politics has gotten to the point were a person would decide to attack a Representative. is just insane. They need to find a more secure way of making sure guns don't end up in the wrong hands. If they had done that before, this may have never happened.

I think that we did learn something and that is that we should have more armed guards at these "meetings" and that we should have back round checks on the people who are going to be there.

I think that the shooting was very terrible thing to happen. A 9 year old girl was killed, thats just horrible if there is a death penalty in Arizona, he should be put to death.

    January 13, 2011 at 9:46 am |
  181. Daniel

We should protect everyone in the House and the Senate. They should have one or two armed guards with them at all times. So a guy can't take a gun and shoot them in the head.

    January 13, 2011 at 9:47 am |
  182. Paul

I think that the shooting in Arizona was a tragic event considering that many people were severely injured or killed. I also think that the government should be more secretive about there where abouts when they have meetings. There should be more security for government officals such as the congriss woman Gabrielle Giffords who was shot in the head and is still in recovery. The lesson learned is that no one can plan these horrible events but they can prepare for them to be safe.

    January 13, 2011 at 10:09 am |
  183. James

I personally think that if your going to have a congress woman arriving anywhere, no matter how safe you think it is, you need to have better protection than there actually was.

Yes there can be something learned from the shooting. There can be a lot of bad people in the world, but we can do everything we can to prevent this from happening again. My prayers are with the congresswoman for a full recovery

As tragic as it may be, we still have other problems to take care of such as economy and foreign relations. To be honest, I think it's a simple waste of time and a distraction from more urgent matters.

My thoughts on the Arizona shooting is that it is an extremely tragic event. I believe that when many people get shot it is an act of terrorism. I believe that if a person is found guilty they should be in prison for life. A lesson we could learn from this tragedy is that there are many crazy people in the world that do crazy acts like this. Those are my thoughts on the events that transpired in Arizona this past weekend

I'm a little confused about why everyone is reacting the way they are to this shooting. Other shootings have happened before without this much support afterward. I hope the government gets better security to protect the important people like the congresswoman that was shot.

In my opinion, the Tuscon shooting was a terrible mishap and I believe that in this country it is impossible to think you can go into a major city and not here about shootings like this. Everyone should be a little more careful.

i think that if that person is able to go around and shoot people that he/she is able to be punished to the full level of the law, because if he is that unstable then he should be in a mental hospital, i also think the problem is somewhat with the goverment because if they pay attetion then he should have been in a hospital somewhere, i also think that there should have been more protection in the area because they know anything can happen.

i do think that the shooting was a bad thing for someone to do and i do think that he should be behind bars and also i think that everybody deserved to live in he shouldn't take anybodys life for no reason at all. i think that the young girl was at the wrong place at the wrong time and now we all know that shes somewhere where she belong.........

I believe the lesson that needs to be learned soon is that despite what party someone is, violence is never the answer. If someone uses violence as their solutions, innocent people are going to get hurt. That is the case in the Arizona shooting. A nine-year-old girl was killed for no reason, but hatred of a political party.

    January 13, 2011 at 3:49 pm |
  204. Terrence

Political opinions are morphing into violent statements. Some politicians are not very kind to each other and their words are too harsh. Such language might set the scene for a violent situation. What happened in Arizona was the work of one sick individual and does not speak for most people.

well what i have to say about the shooting is that it should have never happened. and i wish that it didn't happen so that all those people wouldn't have to go through this trauma and sadness. But hopefully America does not take a step back because of this situation, but takes a big step forward for all of the victims, and for all of America.

The guy who shot and injured all of those people knew what he was doing. I believe he planed everything out, and someone helped him. He needs to be locked up, because what he did to those people is unacceptable.

In my opinion, if he is mentally sane enough to try to assassinate a member of the United States Congress, then he is mentally sane enough to stand trial and pay for the crimes he committed.

I think more lives would have been spared if there was better security. And plus, if the shooter was so emotionally unstable, then why was he out in public with a gun rather than getting therapy?

    January 13, 2011 at 4:40 pm |
  212. Sarah

Violence will never make peace. It will simply make things worse and more devastating to the family of the victim(s). Why people shoot others is because they are sick in the minds and only want more attention. This won't give you anything.

In my opinion I believe that the shooting was a terrible thing that happened. What kind of person would do this thing to innocent people especially a nine year old girl. I think what we should learn from this that we should create a better security and to create stricter laws on owning and using a weapon especially if you live in an urban enviroment.

I think that the Arizona shooting could have been stopped in its tracks. I don't think that anyone should be able to walk into a place with a gun, unless they have had a medical examination, for further protection for themselves, and everyone around them. I think that the man that did this had to know what he was doing, to have a plan like that, and carry it through. I think that higher security could be one answer. I know that people are hurt by this, but I don't think that giving this publicity is helping matters very much. I think that the man that did this is happy because the President spoke about it, and so did other people around the world. Hopefully, we can take this sad experience, and learn from it.

    January 13, 2011 at 6:47 pm |
  227. Robbie

I believe that Arizona should increase its security, and not allow the citizens to carry a loaded gun on them. I feel in the the right to bear arms. All citizens can have a gun in their homes to protect themselves and their families, but should not be aloud to bring a loaded weapon around with them. I cant believe that people have to settle their problems with violence instead of just talking it out. When people can understand that violence isn't always the answer then there would be a lot less shootings.

Dose everything happen in Arizona.? It seems like everything dose but in different area's... like the flood.. and that guy needs to be put in a mental hospital ... thoes people did not deserve to die or even to be injred .. i hope he sees what he did and know that his punishment is right and that nobody is going to like him and i was very sad when i heard about that little girl it made me cry .. that is just horrible...and i thought that it was funny that the first person to stop him was a 60 year old grandma but then i thank the guys who takeled him and that people in other states should be happy for what they have not complain of what they dont have yet.!(:

It's sad to think that no matter how far humans advance, there will always be crazies that think they can solve the world with violence. I think the whole world has learned that no matter what political party you are, no matter where you're from, no matter the color of your skin or what language you speak, we're all just people. People need to stand up for each other. What that man did was aweful, and this probably won't be the last time someone does something like this. We need to join together as a nation. It shouldn't matter if you're Republican or Democrat. If people just got along, this never would have happened.

I'm personally sick of hearing politicians blame each other for the shootings. No one is to blame but the mentally unstable person who did it. I think the main lesson to learn from this horrid event is more thorough evaulations of people who appear to have mental issues. We will never be able to "uninvent" the gun, and there will always be issues in politics. However, we as a country can control how ourselves and others around us react to it.

Only a crazy person would do such thing. A lesson that we could learn from this story is that you should never, ever play with a gun. Guns are dangerous and you should only use them if you are a police or someother sort.

    January 13, 2011 at 8:02 pm |
  239. Jack

i think this is terrible. i feel really bad for all the families that lost someone in this event. i think that a person should go through many tests and a deep background check before buying a gun. People should know who the real person is before buying a gun and make sure they do not intend to do anything bad. Also, i think there should have been more security around an important person.

Tucson Arizona did not diserve this tragic event. No where diserves this tragic event.Everyone that passed away that day, woke up that Saturday morning expecting to have a normal day.Gabrielle Giffords does every thing she can to help our district. She was just doing a generous thing that day.And maybe this happened because some one disagreed one some one elses opinion. This is America, everyone has freedom to speech.Free to express their feelings, their emotions. That's all this might be over, just because some thing some one else believes. When some one says they like orange juice, you don't have to agree. I just think that this is a terrible, tragic event that I think should have never happend. R.I.P. to all that has died.

This event makes me very sad. Innocent people died because someone was upset. Instead attempting to voice his disagreements and views peacefully, he thought violence was the answer. I think we all have learned that we just need to just be happy with each other and talk, not fight. We can take a lesson out of this – if you have a gun you should first have control, because without control no one can predict what tragedy you might cause. Also, I think it is disgusting that people are already making “excuses” for his actions, i.e., he must be insane. Bottom line – he was caught and he should fess up and take responsibility for his actions.

This is very dramatic but it is attracting to much spotlight we should just leave it for now and focus on the unemployment rate and the nations economy. Just give are condolences and go back to are normal lives.

I think this event that happened is one of the many things that is tearing nation apart. You have people saying that it was influenced by people like Glenn Beck or Sarah Palin, or saying that he was an Conservative Republican. He was part of the Independent Party. And also some of his favorite books were Mein Kampf and A Communist Manifesto. Another argument going after this event is gun control, gun control only punishes the law abiding citizens not criminals. Criminals will still find ways to get weapons if there is another weapons ban, like the Assault Weapons Ban of 1994.

The lesson that can be learned is arizona police should be more protective twords not just only famous people but also the citizens of arizona, especialy when inocent by standersgot hurt. This shouldn't have happend police need to be more aware of important events.

I think that the shooter should get a death penalty, crazy or not. it is a wicked thing to do, and I think it would be unjust to the families of those who died to keep him locked in a prison. Unfortunatly, many years ago, the federal government shut down many of the mental institutions and let go of all the patients. Now, there are still many people who need mental help. If those institutions had not been shut down, this man could of gotten help, and this may not have happened.

Someone needs to be held accountable. He didn't need to do that and although he may be not able to process what he was doing, but people cannot just get hurt like that and no one gets held accountable. I think he should go to prison, insane or not.

It's a sad situation when innocent people die because they decided to watch their congresswoman speak in their local food store. Arizona and other states in our country need better gun laws. How can a psycho path be able to buy a hand gun so easily? I feel terrible about the little girl, my sister is the same age, he deserves life in prison, and that's too good for him.

I think the shooting in Tuscon, Arizona was a horrible moment in history. It goes to say that a person with mental disablities should be in a hospital not in the open! I feel for the youngest to the oldest of these victims of this mental shooter. I think that this "person" should be put to justice and tried in a court of law. This "person" should not get off on killing 6 people and injurying 14 other just because he has mentaal issues! The lesson that can be learned from this is that you have to keep your beliefs to yourselves no matter if your a republican or a democrat.

It's really shocking to me to hear of such a tragedy as this Arizona shooting. How could someone get away with plotting to go on a shooting rampage without getting noticed? I grieve for the families who lost their innocent loved ones, but know that this country can take this as an opportunity to grow stronger as a nation to get rid of such violence as best as they can. Most people are too afraid to stand up to say something in the midst of a violent act of crime, but in the end, it could make a huge difference to the people who suffered through it, or lost their loved ones. Citizens of the United States should learn a lesson from this and think about what they would do in such an act to help the victims. Even a simple call to the police could have been made at the first sign of a gun. I know that it wasn't the fault of the by-standers in the incident, but more action could have been taken to stop it. It pains me to think about innocent people dying because of the mental instability of a man who obviously needed help that he was not provided with. From this point on, the United States should take a great step foward in trying to prevent tragedies such as this from happening again.

The lesson of hurting someone should be taught to him. I dont think that is the people that need to learn that. I think the people need to understand that it happens and its horrible and vile, but what we need know that them as by standers should know that nothing about this is thier fault.

The lesson that can be learned is to be more cautious when important people come to visit, especially when all the people who got hurt who didn’t deserve to. It doesn't matter what color you are, a republican, or a democratic, or religion. This shouldn't of happened people need to be more cautious about what they say or do.

I've been learning about this story, and when people mention "deranged and mentally ill people" are the ones shooting people, they have to realize along with this that there are soldiers shooting people to defend us from threat. Isn't it possible the man who committed the shooting felt he was defending people from something?

Courts and other people are saying that the man who shot 19 people was mentally unstable, I think that that is a very weak excuse for murder, and that the man should be thrown in jail.

  274. Kazon

In my opinion they should have had made security stronger and checked everyone of there belongings before the Arizona Meeting began. They also should have checked everyone's mental state because there people who are mentally ill and will hurt someone I've we don't know about it first hand. Also my thoughts go out for the deaths of them all.

I think the shooting in Tucson should teach people that no matter who you are, you are always in danger.

i know the shooting was wrong and the worst that could that could have ever happen and i wish to give my condolences to the families that have lost there family members or friends but maybe this was a way to tell the politicians to listen to the people maybe not everybody is being herd and so i wish that this had not come up to happen but we need to start listening to the people.

i think that we should think about all of the other people that were killed, instead of just the senator. because this person could have had tried to kill other people to for a purpose. this man could have killed that little girl on purpose. like he could have killed that old man for a reason too.

    January 14, 2011 at 8:22 am |
  279. Maggie

I think that the shooter should go to jail even if he is mentally unstable. People knew about him being mentally unstable and didn't help him.

  280. Brandon

i think that we have nothing to learn because anybody can go on a shooting spree but i think that it should be indoors or something and have a metal detector thing in the door way so something like this can be avoided

    January 14, 2011 at 8:24 am |
  281. Nicole

I think that the shooting in Arizona was very unnecessary. People should be able to believe in what they want to believe, that what freedom of speech is for. We should also consider not just the senator, but the other people that we killed/injured.

I think that the shooting was a terrible tragedy. Theres nothing that can be done now except remember the people that lost their lives.

    January 14, 2011 at 8:27 am |

I think the shooting is sad and wrong. Those people were innocent and didn't deserve to die. If someone is mentally unstable they should get help and not be aloud to have guns or be near any weapons of any type.

I wish this didn't happen. I think some of it was political. The shooting of the judge, congress women, and the child, and the other people was terrible. I feel bad for the girl- she was going to meet her congress women. And, now she doesn't have that wonderful life ahead of her. The girl getting shot was very bad, but I think we also need to recognize everyone else that was killed and/or injured. Violence is never the answer.

I was very sad when I watched this with my mom. A young child was killed they said the man that shot these people was a victim of bullying I don't believe that is a reason to Hirt others at all. There is Lot of help for bullying these days

I love how everyone here is wondering where the guards were at a supermarket... I mean, it's to influence people to vote for them... They aren't going to have guards for everyone who's running for some form of office. We have gun laws that are more than acceptable, and we don't need to restrict them. Cars kill more people than guns but we're not restricting them... If someone at the area was legally carrying a concealed firearm, this would've been a non issue because the "terrorist" would've been incapacitated before he did anything. Society needs to understand that just because something or someone did something wrong or illegal doesn't mean we need to prevent the weapon he used. What if he ran in with a knife? Would we restrict kitchen knives and pocket knives? This is what bothers me... people need to understand a problem and what's wrong before they complain.

    January 14, 2011 at 8:34 am |
  288. Paul

Honestly, Society will be our own destruction. We are literally throwing away our lives by hate, racism, and greed. If our world and the people die from Global Warming, I really won't be surprised. Its because of all of us that our world, and people, are coming to an end. So really...why hate? Its just pointless. I feel sorry for the families of the people who were killed, they have my deepest apologies for what happened.

The thing that happened to the people in Tucson will help think more about how dangerous this country can be. A guy coming up to a group of people and shooting them is just like someone coming up to you and hitting you, it is a very strong form of bullying that will always end in tragedy.

    January 14, 2011 at 9:40 am |
  291. Bryce

People in Tucson will learn how bad ther ual area can be ..... some are good nothing happens some where else there could be shooting now.... now we have to think about birds fallying out of the sky.

This shooting shows just how corrupt our world is becoming. I can't imagine what the families are going through right now. Although I am glad that Giffords is doing better. I think we need to pay a little more attention to the people who are mentally disabled, to help prevent these kind of things from happening.

I think the shooting was a terrible tragedy. I feel so bad for the families that lost their loved ones, especially the little girl. I understand that the guy was mentally unstable but how come nobody informed people of this until he went on a shooting spree..someone needs to step up and take responsibility.

I that people in Arizona will be a little more careful. it was no one's fault. I Think that the guy is unstable. i feel bad for all the shooting victims and thier family. i hope that the house speaker gets better. I am pulling for all of them.

I think that the Arizona shooting was unbelievable. When things like this happens it makes you wonder what kind of world we live in. I can't imagine anyone wanting to go out and shoot people; its ridiculous. Our country should crack down on these issues more. I don't think there is any excuse for this behavior.

I think that there is no reason for all of this violence. Maybe when he was younger he was teased and that he had a choice and he knew what he was doing. I think that he should go to jail and stay there.

The shooting in Arizona is a very terrible event. Many people, and families, were hurt by it. Eve+n though most people only heard about Gabrielle Gifferds getting shot, we have to remember everyone else affected by the shooting. The shooting was a very terrible event in America, and the man who did the shootings, was obviously not normal. We can learn that, even though this country is good, some people are crazy and not normal. Hopefully, an event like this will not happen again.

Just because your mad doesnt mean you have to be doing crazy things. All those loses , All the people who saw the shooting . It was a tragety what he did now will be a regreat later on. Because he can never take that heartbreaking moment back.

I think this shows that anything can happen at any time to anyone. Security should become tighter and be highly considered to be added and public places. As well as being ready for anything. People should think about public places like malls and should be checked for weapons before being allowed to enter. If security became tighter, maybe this would stop happening so much.

    January 14, 2011 at 10:45 am |
  306. Corey

I think the shooting is a horrible thing that has happened. But I also think that gun-control is not the solution to the violence. Banning weapons is only going to make things worse, and history can tell you how banning things in the past has worked. There really isn’t anything that we can do to help prevent this…except for being more watchful of our surroundings.

I think this tradedgy could not have been prevented, yes there were some signs of him not being in his right stat of mind. But there wasn't enogh signs to show authorites that this could have been stoped. I also think no one could have lead this man to belive bad things about Mrs. Giffords. I think it was just his own wrong doing and that he should be put into jail for his wrong doings.

It doesn't matter if he ment to hurt her or if he was just drunk, what matters is that he hurt her and killed 5 people in the process. He should be thrown in jail.

Well I live directly in tucson and a few miles away from were it hapend but I belive this could have been avoided by having securaty there regardless if she did'nt want it. She is a public figure and you cant asume that everyone wont do something stupid. Its sad that other lives were lost but maby if there was secuaty there they could have took him down when he shot gabrial and then citizens would not have to.God bless the ones that were lost and and the little girl who did't live a full life also a full recovery to gabrail giferts.

My opinion on the Arizona shooting is that it was a horrible thing that residents from Tucson, Arizona had to experience. I think that we need better security so that these kinds of tragedies can be prevented and innocent lives can be spared.

I think that the shooting is a horrible accident. The guy that shot those people was insane. He has a serious mentall problem that needs to be fixed. But before we deal with him, we should morn for the innocent people who's lives were taken. RIP, their families are in my prayers.

This was an absolute tragety. I cannot imagine hating someone so much as to kill them and 6 others. What he did was completely unneccessary. If you hate someone that bad, write them a letter discussing what you want changed or even go to therapy. Don't kill people. They have families and loved ones whos lives are now very disrupted and turned upside down. I know personally how it feels to lose someone close to me, and to have 6 families have that happen under such stupid and irresponsible circumstances is beyond me. That guy needs help. For God's sake, HE WAS SMILING IN HIS MUGSHOT!!!
Some lessons that you can learn from this is that hate is never a good thing. It can cause some of the hugest trageties in the world, in fact, it already has. Nobody needs to go to such extremes to voice their concern or diliking of a situation. If you are really having issues, get help.

Why bother giving guns to anyone when you can just allow police officers and other military personnel to be in possesion of one. Plus, the person who shot all those inoccent people should be put to prison for 10 lifetimes for all those lives he has taken.

The lessons I think that can be learned from this is that there should be more security. A lot of people don't like it when they see security because some people think that security don't do their job, when they do because they make sure that nothing bad will happen. Adding more security to going to these places and such will make people safer and feel safer.

I think in reference to the shooting that it's great that people are looking to the positive side with Rep. Gifford's recovery, but I think we as a nation need to pay notice to how someone gets to the point of public shootings, not just in this instance but in recent school shootings as well, how can a person get that far with no one noticing, it gets chalked up to "if I had only answered my phone when he called", or he was creepy but seemed harmless, how can a person go from being seeming harmless to murdering 6 people and injuring many others, and no one notice any changes?

This just shows the many flaws in the American Government. There was a lack of security at the meeting, it should have never gotten this bad. This was an attack on all Americans, not just the victims of the shooting. There should have been more security protecting the victims. This incident just shows how when someone disagrees with the American government, they feel its okay to use violence to end it. My respects go out to the families of the victims, may they rest in peace for all eternity.

When i heard about this shoting, I didn't really know what to think. I was shocked because so many people died before somone stopped the shooter, and also sad because such a young girl was killed. I hope all the victims peace and i wish their families good wishes.

The lesson that can be learned is be more protective when important politictions come to visit , exspecially when all the people who got hurt who didn't deserve to! It doesn't matter what color you are, or what political views you have,or what religon. This shouldn't of happend people need to be more careful about what they say or do. Also we need to help others and watch their backs

This was a terrible tragedy that has worried people across the nation. I hope it won't happen ever again. Question: if someone saw the signs of the gunman being mentally unstable, why didn't he/she tell anyone?

There should be no need for violence in this world, but people have always been violent and you cant really change that. The one thing that i think is a wierd conicedence is that every time something like this happens the shooter seems to be mentally ill, so i wondered what causes them to think they have to injure people? do they need to feel some satisfaction or do they not know what theyre really doing? i dont mean to sound mean, but it makes me really sad to think how someone could do that. my thoughts go out to all the families who lost their loved ones. i wish we could stop things like this from happening.

I think it was terrible, whether or not he's a madman. We'd all love to know why he committed this foul crime, but it still doesn't change the facts: he's a murderer. I'm very sorry for all those lost lives. Personally, if he's got all the mental problems they say he has going on, I don't think it'll have anything to do with parties or political views. If he's THAT crazy, I sure hope he has a better reason than, She's a Democrat! It'd better have been something good, like, She and all the other people I killed murdered my first born child and spat on its grave. Even then, I tell you. I thought we were CIVILIZED.

To those who would call Jared Loughner evil are mistaken. This man is mentally ill not evil. He is a victim of an illness that steals your mind and distorts and twists your perceptions. Mental illness is a disease of the mind. Cancer is a disease of the body.. The only difference is how mental illness stigmatized. The cancer patient gets support and compassion. The mentally ill get scorn and mistrust and are isolated and ostracized. The mental health system in America is in tatters with budget cuts. The mentally ill, Who need support are getting left to fend for themselves. If America is serious about the issue of mental illness and Loughner was getting quality treatment for his illness. Gabrielle Giffords might still be alive.

The fact that he tried to kill a member of congress has no affect on what happened. I think the fact is he killed innocent people who had no idea it was coming. Like the rug being pulled out from under them

Who in their right mind would ever want to hurt anybody? You have to be seriously mad at someone to want to hurt someone. But don't just go around with a gun and hurt someone. Find another way to let ou your anger.

I think gun laws should be MUCH stricter! There is no reason that politician had to get hurt and that little girl had to die! Its unfortunate that Rep. Giffords and others had to be injured, and it was entirely unnecessary. However, I think this opens America's eyes to the fact that we aren't invincible. There are people out there who are being affected by everything our government does and sometimes, like an animal who has its cage rattled, they lash out. I feel as though this stands to be a reminder that we aren't just numbers in a society.

  411. Guffey

I think a few simple lessons COULD be learned from the shooting, but like most disasters, nothing more than a short (or long) period of mourning has been done about it. For instance, national security could be improved technologically. I have no idea why people care so much about privacy. It's not as though the GOVERNMENT is going to tell all its friends about what it read about your party last night. It's not going to go around gossiping about your love life and the phone call you shared with your companion the other day. People should suck it up. If we can't give up our privacy for the lives of our fellow Americans, we are no better than the people who killed them.

While guns should not be taken away from civilians, people should be watched more closely. I don't mean that the police should be watching your every move, just that people be careful what they say. What you say to the geek down the hall could be the difference between living another 24 hrs and living another 90 yrs.

I think it was horrible that he shoot and killed those six people. I am upset about the other people that got shot, too. I think that they need to mention his parents more. Even though he was a adult he was living with them and they raised him. He is a very sick man. I think what we can learn from it is that we need to moniter exactly who buys a gun. It does help if we make laws but even if we do make better laws there will always be a criminal out there.

    January 17, 2011 at 4:06 pm |
  420. Emma

It was a very horrible, and sad thing that happened. They need to mention his parents more. I don't care if he was an adult, they raised this human and he was living with them. I think we can learn that we need to moniter exactly who buys a gun, or weapon. If we make better laws that would help, but there will always, always be a criminal out there. It had nothing to do with one party or the other. Jared's friend even said something like: He didn't listen to political radio. So people also need to stop blaming the tea party and the rest of the Republicans. He is a sick man however you say it.

Personally, I think it was a horrible tragedy. Yet, politics still find a way to take an advantage out of the situation and criticize how the country is and isn't progressing. At the end of the day, it could affect anyone politic or not.

I think we can learn a lot from this tragedy. As Americans we always pride ourselves in our ability to come together in a time of despair, this time however, we started pointing fingers. If anything good comes of this, hopefully it’s the full realization of President Lincoln’s words “A house divided against itself cannot stand"! Instead of throwing the blame around and widening party lines, as Americans we need to come together, like we did at 9/11 at Katrina, we need to be a UNITED States, not go around blaming each other. This event split people, but it also brought America closer together. Once the blame stopped going around, Republicans and Democrats alike finally found something they can agree on. They all and we all as Americans agree that this was a terrible event, all Americans no matter what party agree that those who stopped the shooter were heroic, and all of us senators and constituents alike take hope from every message of recovery that comes from Rep. Giffords. This proves that Democrats and Republicans can agree on something, a lesson that, hopefully, will be used in this new session of Congress

I believe that this incident is a reflection of all of the hate speech irresponsibly uttered by many people. That type of speech produces an environment conducive to people beginning to believe that it is permissible to act in violent ways. A speech that diminishes respect for other people can lead to violence.

Was this an attempted assasitination, or a terroist attack? It was really what the murder thought. It's heartbreaking to see that all these people die, but this has happened before. Some stories are never heard. Violence is not an awnser, why does this happen?

This should tell the people in arizona to be more careful now. it would be awful if more people died knoawing that we might have been able to prevent it. I hope that people will learn from this and that they will be careful. I also hope that there will be a day that we dont have to worry about shooters of gangs or even being mugged.

    January 18, 2011 at 7:16 pm |
  458. Mollie

Well first off I think that what happened to all these people is a horrible event. They did not deserve to die and they were not ready to die. The family of the little nine year old must be devastated right now. I just cannot imagine living in Tucson Arizona right now and having your life be interrupted and disturbed because someone took out a gun, shot, and killed people in your community who you cared about. I hope that in the future the families of the deceased will be able to move on with their lives But I do think that there is a lesson to be learned from this terrible event, the lesson is that we have to be more aware of people who could potentially have a mental problem. We should have more thorough tests to try and find out if a person has a mental illness or not. Also guns should not be given out to people who do not pass a mental stability test. This is my opinion about the Arizona shooting and what I think we can learn from it.

I think that the shooting in Arizona is a sign that congress need to put stricter laws on weapon sales because weapons only should be sold to people without a mental/violent background. If the laws of weapon sales were stricter, the act of violence against "congress" and the public would be reduced.

I thing he had no rights to dvo that he took his anger on other a shot a little girl(she was born on 8-11-01)allmost killed a juge.that shows how much vioeance is in this world he dident care about who was harmed and who was killed all he thought about was him self.me and my dad were in the car talking about it we had the same opinion.it is not right.

I think that we all need to learn to get along , the incident was unnecessary. innocent people were killed and people should think about how there action will effect people around them.

I think that we can most defiantly learn a couple of things form the Arizona shooting. first of all i believe that we can never be to careful, there are always opportunities to reassure peoples safety. Also and most importantly, we need to pay closer attention to people with a mental disability. I am not saying people with mental disabilities are harmful and not to be trusted, it is just that we have no idea of what they are going to do and what they are thinking. mental disables should have more options for medication and controlling their disability at younger ages so we could prevent further damage. if we also treat them like any body else, they could feel like they fit in and belong for a change.

A lesson that can be learned from this, is that we need to stand together both democrat and republican as one nation. We got to be strong and not be seperated by our differences.

The shooting was un called for and should have never happen. The man should have been reported when people thought he was going crazy. If people had reported him Congress Lady Gifford would not be in the hospital.

There are a lot of crazy people out there but I dont think that killing the women from the government was on purpose. This guy killed a lot of people at that shooting so I'm sure he wasnt aware that this women was from the government. Although killing all those people was very bad.

I believe a lesson will be learned. The Arizona shooting was awful but the people know that something unexpected can happen at any moment and they should know to live life to the fullest. I do not think shooting those people from the government was the killers intention, I believe that he killed those people because something was wrong with him, not because they were from the government.

I think that the Arizona shooting was very inappropriate and destructive. There is no reason to shoot and try to kill someone just because you disagree with them on political issues. I also think that for now on, people of power should wear a bullet proof vest in public. Lastly, I think that it is not right that people got hurt even though they were just hanging out with the target.

The Arizona shooting was totally unexpected and is still shocking many today. During this time doors should have been locked or secured with security guards watching. While the shooter came why didn't the men watching the cameras didn't alert others. Therefore, there wasn't cameras which is where they did one of the mistakes not putting cameras for safety purposes.

My reaction to this article is that why couldn’t peers or authorities predict this incident what about to occur. At school where always talking about bulling and the negative effects it has on people and how the anger gets stored up and the only way he could get it out was through aggression and violence. When they interviewed some of his old class mates all they could say was negative things about him, which is hard to believe that he didn’t have one friend! Also nobody intervened, not his parents, not his teaches, no one!

I think that it was wrong of this man to try an assassinate a congress member just because he was either told to do that or because he didn't agree with her opinions. I hope that he is punished to the limit because he has not only commited a crime, but also killed a few other innonscent people. And all of my best wishes to the famillies of the shooting victims and their friends.

I believe this act is most horrendous and believe it could have possibly been controlled. Lives were taken on account of this and many were severely scathed. We need to come together and find a way to organize peace abroad, so that this can never happen again or be prevented effectively! As for the culprit of this affair, he needs to be punished to the highest degree being that his enmity was directed to a congresswoman, no quandary about it.

I think the shooting in Arizona was horrible. I feel the people in Arizona are most likely angry with the senseless killing of a young 9 year old girl. The world needs to protect each other.

    lots of lessons!

Not only for the people in Tuscon, but all over the U.S, even the world. Just because it happend there doesn't mean it couldn't have anywhere else. It was just a struck of fate. We should be more careful, better security should be used, though there will always be a mistake. We are only human.

I think the shooter was definitely insane. The shooter was only 22 years old, but threw his life away by shooting all those people. And even if he only meant to harm the congresswoman, why did he continue with the crowd, killing a 9-year-old girl and several others?

I think that the lesson to be learned is that we can't be to careful when a senator comes to town because something bad could happen just like the shooting in Arizona. Also I think that security needs to be powered up a little bit so if someone tries to kill someone they'll think twice about it.

I think this could of been a whole different situation then my class mates think. i think this was both political and the shooter had just went crazy and snapped. He decided he would kill senator Gifford, the things she believed in but can you ever really kill a dream no matter what you think politically doesn't just mean you can kill some one he should be in for life.

The world needs to get better people are killing over nothing. Life is not easy you have to try your best to live.Just know life anit easy you have to protect your children and your family.

In my opinion in Tuscon, Arizona. I think it was politically based. But at the same time I think the shooter was crazy for shooting everyone. No matter how mad you are you just can't go around shooting people. He went to Senator Gifford speech and he probably didn't like what senator Gifford was saying politically and he was probably super mad that he want to shoot her and kill her.

I think that the man that was shooting should be taught a lesson because he just went in that Safe way parking lot and shot a 9 year old child and 5 others and it's a good thing they called the police because the people who were there thought of what they should do and they did the right thing. that tragic man is crazy enough.I'm glad hes in jail because if that was me what would of happened?

I believe that the shooting was not good at all.I have Love, Joy, Hope for the families that lost their loved ones because that is very sad. I wonder what was he thinking when he was shooting? He should remain silent.WOW six people were killed because of him. Innocent people who didn't even do anything to him . That also hurt my heart because I can imagine one of my loved ones getting injured or killed, and I can't picture them getting killed or injured. It's bad enough out in this world now. People are on welfare and can hardly feed their families everyday . No one really has the money to bury their love ones.
p.s I have sympathy for the families who lost their love ones .

But why take out your anger on innocient people.I bet

I am sorry for the families of those hurt in the shooting. I think that the lesson to be learned is that there should be more security around Politicians . the shooting was an unnecessary event and could have/should have been prevented. i am extreamly sorry for the congress woman but it is a miracle that she is recovering. yet to me something was all wrong to be having a national moment of silence for her and the other victoms, when every day some one some where is dying. i know she is important to our country but still. at my school we do have a moment of silence before the pledge, but i do not see why we can't have an individual moment for all the soldiers that are dying for our country when she may not even die. please trust that i am truely sorry for the incidentbut what about our troops??

    January 20, 2011 at 5:19 pm |
  539. Kamaria

I personally don't think the attack had anything to do with the congresswoman's policies. Well, not as much as it had to do with a mans altered mental status. Do I think that we can learn anything from this, maybe we can beef up security around events like this so the man with the gun doesn't get in in the first place. He was obviously not trying to assassinate her for any good reason, he was just a sociopath who wanted to do something big.

    January 20, 2011 at 5:22 pm |
  540. Will

I think that security will tighten in public events. But I also think we should be careful about what we interpret this as. It wasn't the gun that decided to kill those people. It was the person with the gun so we shouldn't interpret this as a way to help change the right for guns.

Why would someone even do that? what were they trying too do get there selves put in jail or something? i think that was totally wrong look how many people were injured and killed he should be put in jail for the rest of his life! if he did not like someone at the store there was probably a better way to solve things then killing people.

I think that the shooting was a very unfortunate accident and those innocent people had a life to live and for someone to just take it away from them because they're angry is very inconsiderate and selfish. There are plenty of other ways to solve a problem without going out of control.

What happened in Tucson was an awful tradgedy, that in my opinion, could have been stopped. From the Az shooting I think that it teaches us that we all should be careful where we go when there is someone important or big crowds. I don't think that guns need to be banned but maybe a restriction on where they can go and the kinds of people who have them. The shooting really opened everyones eyes to see that shocking things happened everyday and the only thing we can do now is hope for the best and learn from our mistakes.

I think that what the man did was wrong but with his "condition" , i think he probably didn't no right from wrong . I think the government should be on the look out for things like this ,so it does happen again. i know it sounds weird, but i sort of feel bad for him cause he might not have know what he was doing , if it was a dream or not .

This shooting was a very terrible accident and I was very sad to hear about all the people who died or who were injured. Just because people have the right to bear arms doesn't mean they have the right to go around shooting people when ever they want.

I can't believe that anyone could be so upset that they would shoot senior citizens, a nine year old girl out to do great things, and a congress woman. Violence is NEVER the answer, especially if it means killing lives. It's horrible, and I hope the families and friends of the people who were shot recover quickly.

    A quote from Ronald Regan's son, Michael, says;
"... I then asked the head of the secret service, "Why were they able to shoot my dad?" And he replied, “Our job is to protect the president of the United States, your father. We can protect him from everything, except the “crazies.”
What happened to my father was a “crazy” incident, and as was the Arizona shooting. You can’t stop these things from happening, it’s inevitable.”

I believe that what happened on that day was extremely sad. The person that shot the Congresswoman, in my opinion, is probably not right in the mind. I am so glad that she survived what happened even though the poor 9 year old and the other people didn't. That was very sad and I hope that this won't strike our country again. No one has the right to shoot someone when they are going out there in their community to help. It was very tragic and unpredictable.

i think the massacre is terrible. And to think that someone would ever even think about killing or shooting congress........ i think he should be in a death sentence with the jail walll and cruddy toilets. i think that people should not own guns and if they did they shouldnt have any criminal record and they should be able to use them at shooting ranges with someone supervising them like little kids.

The shooting is truly a sad loss. Their were some innocent lives lost and I wish they could have another chance. I truly wish the man would have considered it and have decided not do it. I think there wasnt much of a lesson because it couldnt have been avoided.

The shooting i thought was tragic. To hear about it was not so good. To kill other people is not cool at all. To take a life of a person is just rude and not very good because after you do that the police are comming after you and you cant stop them from arresting you. You can't say oh that was an accident you shot the person so you are going into jail for a while. It is just not cool.

    January 24, 2011 at 4:49 pm |

I don't think people should have guns for protection, even if it is for the house. Fire arms are dangerous and shouldn't be sold to people. It should only be used for the military and police. Not just any person should have a gun.

This shooting is a horrible thing, and the man who did this should be punished. Though it is a miracle she is alive, those people who died should be remembered. A lesson from this would be to give backgound checks before buying weapons, and better security at these speeches.

It is a terrible way to handle things by shooting and taking people's lives. Even for the bad guy, you can't just shoot people whenever you feel like it, it's wrong. Like how would you feel if someone came to you and just shot you adn say oh well your died.

    January 24, 2011 at 4:58 pm |
  609. Darian

It wasn't the best way to handle whatever this person was feeling. I don't know how anyone could just go around shooting people they don't know just because they're angry. It's not fair, and it's wrong.

I think the shooting is dispicable because it is so worrying and sad to hear this on the radio and T.V. but I am glad to hear that she is recovering very fast and I hope she is treated nicely by her friends, family, and neighbors.

    January 24, 2011 at 7:05 pm |
  613. Marcy

No one should have to go through that experience. All the families that have to deal with the death of one of their loved ones just isn't fair. The shooting was a traumatic experience there, whether they were shot, one of their loved ones were shot, or they were just standing their. Even the ones that saw this happen on the TV or the web were effected. I don't know about everyone else but this makes me full of questions. Why was and what caused this man to be so full of emotion that he took nine innocent lives and wounded others? Is this likely to happen if someone else tries to talk to public? Are we, as American citizens, at the beginning of a new war but we just don't know it yet?

    January 24, 2011 at 7:33 pm |
  614. Peggy

The lessons that can be learned form the shooting is that there are still people that live in America that will kill and murder for reasons unknown to us, but that exist. As well as people "heros" in America that will sacrifice there lives for others.

Although the shooting in Arizona was very terrifying for some of the people who live there, they have now learned that they need to keep their kids safe as well as themselves. Their community needs to be more strict about weapons and need to work together to make Arizona a better place.

This event is horrible. The man with the gun had a mental illness and he was kicked out of the college he went to. Even though he never went back to school, he was somehow able to buy a gun. How is that possible? He killed six people including a nine year old girl. I feel so bad for her family because not only was she killed at a very young age but she was born on September 11, 2001. Her parents have been through a lot and they deserve to be recognized.

Viloence is not an option. You dont just go around shooting people because your angry at somone or something. You need to control you actions and use your words. If you do use your words then other people can help you. So the lesson from this is control your actions.

People who even have the nerves to walk into a store with a gun obviously have mental problems. It is unfortunate that people died in this shooting. The shooter doesnt realize how many people are affected by this.

First of all, I would like to send my condolences to the families who lost loved ones in the shooting. What happened was not ok. People shouldn't just go around shooting other people just because they are mad. If you are going through a hard time in your life, you should talk to someone about it.

I think that this is a real tragedy and it is extremely sad for not only the families of the victims, but to everyone that hears about it. it is amazing that Congress Woman Giffords is doing so well and i think i speak for everyone when i say i wsh her a speedy recovery.

    January 25, 2011 at 1:38 pm |
  634. Jake

This shooting had nothing to do with the killer's personal beliefs. He might have a mental illness, but no one helped him. You have to remeber to help those who need it, even if they don't want it. I don't think they should ban guns. Think about it, there's probably more people who defend themselves with guns than people who kill people with guns.
