Lessons Learned?

Six months to the day after the worst oil spill in American history, we're looking at all of the wildlife that has been rescued - and all of the work ahead of cleaning crews as they fight the pollution.

The spill is one of the most significant events of 2010.  What do you think can be learned from it?

I think we can study the animals and see how they survied and we need to learn how to keep the oil spills from happening but until then we just need to keep finding clues and watching plants and animals underwater to see what happend

I think that this oil spill can be a good learning experience about knowing if your equiptment is working at all times

We have learned ways to prevent oil spills. Therefore ways to clean the oil . So we actually moved forward in oil spill knowledge .

I think that is true, we need to study the animals that we t thru this horible tragic thing & see how they survived. We need to study in what lived , what died, how they died/lived & where they where. It is vert important to figure out how our animals live..

    • Mayra

I think that we need to do alot of investagashions especially on the animals to make sure they were not harmed in any way.....

I think we learned alot from the oil spill. It shows how to protect the animals. And how to provent another oil spill. They been more careful on what they did.

    • Bree

I think we need to study the animals that went thru his tragic thing & study what lived, why it lived & how it lived. We also need to study what died, how it dies & why it died. We need to study on which underwater plants died if they did & how they died as well.

I think that we should look or study the animals and plants that were effected by the the oil spill because if another oil spill does happen then we could find a cur o a type of medicine for the animals to help them or save them

I think that the oil spilled destroyed half of our nations wildlife which is the ocean. I think that they should clean the oil as fast as possible because people eat food that's seafood. So without seafood companies that sells food with loose a lot of money because they can't sell seafood thats contaminated.

I think that the oil spill is dangerous for the ocean life. They should do something more about it like cleaning up an they should make ire all the fish are okay ad safe same with the land.!

    • Richard

We learned that the oil spill was very bad. It could of made some fish extict. And very dirty water

I think people can learn what we do has an effect an to be careful because you shouldnt be out mining oil without causing a bad effect so the lesson learned should be always carefull check for mistakes fix em and just be careful

I think this teaches us that even though we have advanced technology we could still make little mistakes which can be disaterous

I think we can learn that offshore drilling is a very dangerous business. It can have a huge effect on the environment and all the people involved. We can't forget that it CAN happen again and we need to take precautions so we don't have to go through this tragic event again.

I think the oil spill is really a eye opener for the u.s. I believe we should do all we can to keep this from happening again

The oil spill was a big devistathion to the u.s. And I wish that I never happened

I think the oil spill shouldn't had happened unless they had been more carefull of what they were doing.

I think that people now understand the worst possibilities of any large transportation. It seems like a restatement of the Exxon Valdez oil spill, but since last time, we didn't really get the repercussions of the spill, this time, we really did understand.

We hopefully learned that we need to balance the need for oil with the reality that it may hurt our wildlife. What is more important to us, oil, or our animals?

    October 20, 2010 at 6:51 pm |
  7. Zuzak

We all can learn from this!!! FIRST: We now know (or SHOULD’VE) that oil is not something to mess with. SECOND: Life is more precious than it looks. An entire ecosystem has been ruined and destroyed by this oil spill. We all need to stop looking just for ourselves and keep the whole world in our conscience. After all, it’s the only world with marine mammals and birds. C:

    (by the way, it's ZOO-ZAK)

I think what I learned is that a lot of people have a lot of care toward a lot of living animals.

I think the lesson learned is that although were 99% sure everything is safe and secure, BP needs to realize that that one perecnt of unsureness, can happen in a split second right before their eyes. A long time before the oil spill, I think they needed a back- up plan just in case and I think they could have cleaned it up quicker.

i think that we have all learned that we need to be more careful about drilling into things near water. that could end up being all bad.

Even though many wild life creatures were hurt, I believe this was a mistake we can learn from. We can prevent this from happening again, but in the mean time we have to worry about cleaning up for the animals sake.

I think that it really hurt our country when this thing happend two the united states i really think since it happend i think think it is going to bost our econamy lower so that will help our united states!!!

I cant believe after 6 months they cleaned it all out and the animals are save.

I think we've learned the dangers of off shore drilling and we should take more safety precautions before we start drilling again.

The lessons that can be learned from this can be to use less fuel. The less fuel we use can effect the pollution rates in a good way.
I'm happy cleaning crews arte working so hard to fight pollution.

    October 20, 2010 at 8:01 pm |
  17. Jimi

I don't think that the lesson will be learned until BP and other oil company's release to the public that they have made changes that will revolutionize the oil industry.

  18. cole

its a good lesson not to put oil rigs ther in the water but they do it for money and just because thats were you can get alot of oil from under water i dont like how the people are acting about the spill pray to god that all the oil is cleand up from the water.

If anyone is to learn about this disaster, it is B.P. The economy was already bad before the spill, and i don't think that event helped it at all. Just thinking about all the innocent animals that died from something that could have been advoided easily wants to make me cry

we have learned to be more careful about how we drill in the ocean and maybe we should stop doing just that

    October 20, 2010 at 8:29 pm |
  21. Helen

I think the lesson learned is that oil drilling has many risks... Maybe too many. We need to develop another effecient energy source that is more eco-friendly. Oil spills have harmed and killed many animals in the past and put others in danger.

    October 20, 2010 at 8:30 pm |
  22. Michael

    So far so good

    October 20, 2010 at 8:42 pm |
  23. Mackenzie

I think me and others learned from it that, we need to be more careful drilling oil because if we make one mistake it will effect our enviroment and the animals that live in it, but not just drilling oil, just making plain mistakes in life.

    October 20, 2010 at 8:44 pm |
  24. Kaitie

Well you would think the workers would know what they were doing so they can practice drills to make sure it doesn't happen again.

You can't always trust other companies, such as the British Petroleum. Some companies are headed only for money, expecially in this recession. I'm not saying BP is an "advertisement," but you have to be aware that everybody makes mistakes.

    October 20, 2010 at 8:52 pm |
  26. Christine

I think it taught us how dangerous oil can be and how it harms the environment. It teaches us all a very valuable lesson that we'll never, ever forget.

    October 20, 2010 at 9:05 pm |
  27. Alexis

I think that much can be learned from this. If this happens again, we might see some extinctions in marine life and that may break our food chain. Even the smallest animals affected from it can change species drastically.

    October 20, 2010 at 9:06 pm |
  28. Ashley

I think that from the oil spill, we can learn that we need to take many, many precautions. We killed and harmed many living creatures because of our want for oil. It is not right to put animals in danger to get oil. We need to make sure that we inspect and test our machines very carefully to make sure nothing like that happens again.

    October 20, 2010 at 9:20 pm |
  29. Ryan

What can be learned is that all of these life killing things should really be payed attention to.

    October 20, 2010 at 9:21 pm |
  30. Nik

I think that the main thing we can learn from this event is that we have to be way more careful when handling oil in the ocean. I also think that we should find a much safer way to transport oil onto boats to ensure that this doesn't happen again.

    October 20, 2010 at 9:29 pm |
  31. anne

There is a lot to learn about the oil spill that hurt a lot of animals and people as well. One of the things that we all probably learned is to take precaution and make sure everything the goverment is doing is safe for everyone including the workers.I thing that this oil spill could have been prevented.

    October 20, 2010 at 9:39 pm |
  32. Jake

I think we can learn that if something goes wrong, wether it involves the whole country or just one state we can all pitch in to help. This is what we did for the oild spill and look where we are now.

    October 20, 2010 at 9:40 pm |
  33. Kira

I think that they are going to work on making the boats more efficient so they are most likely to not spill oil. Hopefully the changes will be made.

Looking at that incident i see that life has been a issue. i hope we have less earthquakes with the big chile earthquake!! i hope that we have no more oil rigs either!

I think that we can learn to start useing other energys other than oil. But ultimatley it is not what we can learn, it is if we can learn

    October 20, 2010 at 9:51 pm |
  37. Chris

I think the oil spill is a good lesson, because it teaches us that the ocean is no place to drill for oil. We already have enough in Alaska, and if we drilled on land, it would be way easier to cap. Also easier to clean. If Alaska ran out of oil, by then we will most likely have a different source of energy.

    October 20, 2010 at 10:01 pm |
  38. Corinne

I would have to say, although it has caused lots of destruction to the gulf, it has brought to the world's attention again that the earth is in a huge state of disrepair. We need to build smarter rigs for the time being, and eventually become independent of oil, foreign or not. If this disaster doesn't motivate people to clean the earth, I don't know what will.

    October 20, 2010 at 10:05 pm |
  39. Samantha

I think we can learn from this tradegy that you have to be careful when oil is being traded by boat because it can affect and harm the enviroment of the animals drastically.

this oil spill taught many people how water pollution can be vile to sea creatures and people.we can also learn from the spill that water pollution can turn into a big crisis.

    October 20, 2010 at 10:22 pm |
  42. Alhassan

`the oil spill made people think of it as a lesson to keep their environment clean so others can live there(in a clean area)

  43. sydney

I think we have all learned that we cant let these things go unnoticed,
before the spill almost nobody cared or took any thought to oil spills
and the oil spill six months ago was a wake up call.

    October 20, 2010 at 10:39 pm |
  44. Daegan

I think the lesson learned is to pay closer attetion on the rigs to reduce the chance of another oil spill

    October 20, 2010 at 11:03 pm |
  45. arriya

the oil spill was so bad but the animals look so strong

    October 20, 2010 at 11:10 pm |
  46. Jake

I learned so much from the oil spill, the suspence of not knowing what the affect will be on our environment, and if the spill could even be caped, brought me to the realization that the world must work together in order to help the environment. Working together is the only way that the world can move on.

please please please, put my comment on the show, ive been trying to get on the show all year

    October 20, 2010 at 11:21 pm |
  47. Jake

wow, can you imagine six months and look how far we've got, this just goes to show, even when the going gets tough, we can all work together to make it through

    October 20, 2010 at 11:23 pm |
  48. Breanne

I think we can learn that using common sense is a tool needed before drilling into the ocean for oil. This gives us a chance to look at how dependent we have come to something, so much that we dont even use our common sense before we do something that could harm people, animals, and the environment.

    October 20, 2010 at 11:45 pm |
  49. Kirk

I think that even with today's technology , we still have to be careful about are work. Its like the way i do home work, i don't double check my work

    October 20, 2010 at 11:51 pm |
  50. Warner

Lesson learned should be that we need to keep oil rigs under more intense regulations

    October 21, 2010 at 1:54 am |
  51. Warner

Oil companies need to be more responsible for the craft they leave on other countries soil to not further tarnish land

    October 21, 2010 at 1:56 am |
  52. Erik

I believe that next time we need to have it checked checked and rechecked

    October 21, 2010 at 2:14 am |
  53. JinWoo(Leo)

We can learn that oil spill is very dangerous to people or nature or anything.Even we can learn that oil spill will be hard to clean(it's the one of the most significant events from 2010.)

  54. dakota

I beleive by haing the oil spill we have new understanding on how to contain it and how fragile our ecosystem acutually is.It may have happened six months ago but the effecdts it had on wild life and land should not be forgotton

    October 21, 2010 at 6:11 am |
  55. Ainsley

I think that we an learn to have more checks on oil rigs, and stuff like that. I also hope that if this ever does happen again, we have a back-up plan.

    October 21, 2010 at 6:42 am |
  56. steven

we have learned that having bp drill in the oceans is not a good idea because it was obvious that they and we were not ready for this level of this kind of an oil spill. so what we need to do is to make sure that before we start to drill in any sector of the world that we actually know what to do is to prepare fully and have the right equipment if this ever happens again

    October 21, 2010 at 7:55 am |
  57. TYLER

i think the lesson has been learned, to an extent but your never sure.

We need to get away from being so oil dependent

    October 21, 2010 at 8:24 am |
  60. Carson

We should try to be more careful next time, maybe some extra protection so nothing dangerous like that happens again.

    October 21, 2010 at 8:26 am |
  61. Meghan

I think that we should take more precautions, and we should double check everything. We need to be more carful, and less carless.

    October 21, 2010 at 8:30 am |
  62. Rachel

I think the lesson that can be learned from this horrible spill is not to drill into the land under the water without knowing what your doing. Maybe the didn't listen to math and science when they could have and saved billions of animals lives.

    October 21, 2010 at 8:31 am |
  63. Corey

I feel bad for all the pour little animals that was in the Gulf when the spill happened, I'm glad that there are some people out there that like to help the animals.

I think we've learned about the dangers of oil spills. now we are also more prepared for an oil spill

    October 21, 2010 at 9:15 am |
  67. Stephen

I learned three things from this disaster
    1. If you are going to do offshore drilling atleast have parts that work
    2. How much I really love seafood and how I could not get any
    3. How an oil spill can affect buisnesses all over the world not just the fishermen

P.S. I would like to give a shoutout to my classmate Zak who got on CNN Student News with his blog about sportmanship!

    To check evreything twice

    October 21, 2010 at 9:23 am |
  69. Kaylee

The lesson learned is, well it's going to take a lot of work. The only thing is finding the people who are willing, to volunteer to to do this.

    October 21, 2010 at 9:24 am |
  70. laniciana

i think they learned to be careful next time because now they know the cost of it,6 months of it and then it finally stops but then all the cost of cleaning it up and all the animals life.

    October 21, 2010 at 9:25 am |
  71. RACHEL

I think they learned to be careful with the gulf ,because they need to think about the animals , plants, water, and sand so it deos not get hurt.

    October 21, 2010 at 9:25 am |
  72. Jacob

The lesson learned here is that you should never leave oil on the ground or in you creek if theres oil anywere you try to clean it up.

    October 21, 2010 at 9:26 am |
  73. laniciana

i think they know the cost of it and they will be more careful next time because of the animals, sand and oil.

    October 21, 2010 at 9:27 am |
  74. laniciana

i think they know the cost of it and they will be more careful next time because of the stuff in the ocean

    October 21, 2010 at 9:27 am |
  75. Macey

I believe that we could learn alot from this event. Alot of animals and people were effected by this. We should take extra precautions next time around to help prevent this from happening again.

    October 21, 2010 at 9:28 am |
  76. Ryan

I know I learned that if a big group of people want to clean the seas all around the world that they can do it. Also how it not only affect the fishermen but everyone all over the world.

    October 21, 2010 at 9:34 am |
  77. JB

i think we have learned to be careful no more assuming it will be ok

    October 21, 2010 at 9:35 am |
  78. Samantha

I think what people are doing to help the animals, and plants is a great thing to do. There is still lots of work to be done, but we will get there. 🙂

    October 21, 2010 at 9:50 am |
  79. Emily

The lesson will never be learned, as long as the oil companys make the big bucks, they wont care. It is very important that we teach the new generation of kids how to respect the wildlife and teach them how to prevent disasters like this

    October 21, 2010 at 9:53 am |
  80. Violet

We all need to take care of the earth. Its were we live and in our future the world may be a very polluted place. We don't want that so we all need to take a stand and take better care of our environment.

    October 21, 2010 at 10:08 am |
  81. Tim

Ithink should put oil rigs in the ocean so we dont polute any more water and kill more animals.

    October 21, 2010 at 10:11 am |
  82. David

Here's what I think I can learn from it. People need to save more the animals in wildlife from dying or sickness.

    October 21, 2010 at 10:13 am |
  83. Gabrielle

i think that we have learned our lesson. our animals have became in danger because of this terrible crises. there we are trying to rescue all the animals from the ocean.

    October 21, 2010 at 10:15 am |
  84. julia

i think that they should stop pumping oil out of the well and that if they keep tinkering with it it only leads to chaos. And not only does it affect us its affects the animals such as birds that eat insects and if you killed birds who would eat the insects and if you killed hawks that eat small little animals who would eat the anmals so that is my opinion for this cnn news blog thank you for your time

    October 21, 2010 at 10:15 am |
  85. isaias

I think They can learn that they should'nt drill for oil near a body of water because then the population of fish and animals will be affected

    October 21, 2010 at 10:16 am |
  86. Athena

I think it will teach us to be more careful in the future. Our efforts in cleaning up the oil and rescuing animals has been terrific, but there is much to be done. This will teach us that things like the oil spill can happen in life and that we should be sure we know how to prevent it.

    October 21, 2010 at 10:18 am |
  87. breana

I think this that the lesson lean was that people should care about the gulf and the ocean and the animals.

    October 21, 2010 at 10:21 am |
  88. Nicole

i think that people should be more cautious with the oil wells. i think that it is good that the animals are getting help so they don't die.

    October 21, 2010 at 10:22 am |
  89. amy

I think that we have learned we should learn to do our work while paying
    attention to detail

    October 21, 2010 at 10:24 am |
  90. patty

i think this is a good way to help the gulf of mexico

    October 21, 2010 at 10:30 am |
  91. Celestine

I think that we learned that with greed comes a price. Numerous animals died because of extensive oil drilling. We as people finially realise that, yes we need oil but there are other alternatives that wouldn't have killed animals.

    October 21, 2010 at 10:36 am |
  92. Kennedy

i think we learned that no matter how much oil they clean up the animals a water will still be affected. at least they are putting some effort into cleaning up the gulf and taking care of all the affected animals.

    October 21, 2010 at 10:40 am |
  93. Wilkins

I think that we learned, or should have learned, that we need to start being less dependent on oil. This would never have happened if we had started to use the alternate energy sources even just a few years ago.

  94. Meg

I learned we have great power to destroy nature and kill wildlife. And also only us who could rescue them.

    October 21, 2010 at 10:44 am |
  95. kayla

I think that this oil spil was the worst. The oil went all over. I am so glad that those who could help......DID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! EVENTUALY WE WILL FINISH THE CLEANUP!!!!!!!!!!

    October 21, 2010 at 10:44 am |
  96. GUSTAVO

WHAT WE CAN LEARN FROM THIS IS TO WORK TOGETHER TO CLEAN THIS OIL UP SO THAT NATURE CAN LIVE IN THEIR OLD HOMES AND SO THAY CAN LIVE SAFE

    October 21, 2010 at 10:50 am |
  97. Shawn

I think that we need to learn how to be more careful with oilrigs and find better ways to find the energy we need so we don’t hurt the environment. We also need to have stricter laws over oilrigs and we have to put the people responsible for the accident to trial.

    October 21, 2010 at 10:56 am |
  98. Kylie

I think that there was and is a lot to be learned with the oil spill. Not only have we learned how to deal with such a tragedy, but how our nation comes together in times of need. The big oil companies are going to have be much more careful now with everything they do. Not only because they don't want history to repeat itself, but also that everyone's eyes will be on them for awhile.

    October 21, 2010 at 11:12 am |
  99. Cadey

I think the main concern that could be thought of the most, is drilling for oil in the ocean! Hopefully, this teaches some of the other oil drilling companies that the same thing could happen to them.

    October 21, 2010 at 11:22 am |
  100. santo

I think we can learn a lot of things from this oil spill. It shows we need more strict guidelines on deep-sea drilling. It also gives another positive example of how good things happen when Americans come together to solve a problem. Another thing we learned is how to deal with a massive oil spill. Now that we know what to do to cap something like this, if it ever comes up again, we'll be prepared. Even though many bad things came of the spill at first, we learned a lot of valuable lessons in the end.

    October 21, 2010 at 11:23 am |
  101. Amber

i think the lesson learned from the oil spill is that the people who were drilling needs to be more careful. 🙂

    October 21, 2010 at 11:23 am |
  102. baily

I think that we can learn a lot from this we can learn a lot from this. We shouldn’t be drilling for oil in the ocean. But I am glad that everything turned out great and nothing bad happened.

    October 21, 2010 at 11:24 am |
  103. Kaleb

I think that we could learn to test the equipment before we put it to work. It would also be a good idea to change out the parts (if possible) so they do not break so often or just buy a new part.

    October 21, 2010 at 11:25 am |
  104. Fabio

I think we learned at least one way to not build an oil tanker. But we also learned one way to cap an oil spill.

    October 21, 2010 at 11:26 am |
  105. Liam

Hopefully BP has learned there lesson and will learn from there mistakes.

    October 21, 2010 at 11:30 am |
  106. brad

I think that BP has learned that they need to check the equipment before they start working on the rig. Just because the oil ruined the environment, they killed a ton of animals. That is wrong.

    October 21, 2010 at 11:31 am |
  107. Leandra

I think we learned to be more cautous and carful and try not to make to many mistakes espcially when working with the oil machines and drillls. It's just heartbreaking that its going to take a couple of years to clean out the spill even if we try really hard, its also diappointing that the wildlife has to suffer from a mistake that us humans made.

    October 21, 2010 at 11:32 am |
  108. Morgan

I think the most important quality that should be adopted by everyone after witnessing this oil spill is integrity. As human beings, we should always do the right thing even when no one is looking.

    October 21, 2010 at 11:33 am |
  109. Claudia

I think that the peolple should have been more cautious and aware of what could happen and that they should have a plan if it happens again.

    October 21, 2010 at 11:35 am |
  110. celest

I hope they learned there lesson i hope they can save all of thow animals and clean up all of that oil that got spilt and went on the beaches.i still cant beleive thows pour animals with all that oil on them.

    October 21, 2010 at 11:35 am |
  111. Amadi

We learned that next time we need to build better machines

    October 21, 2010 at 11:35 am |
  112. Taylor

We learned that the oil company should check it at least one day a month so this doesn't happen anymore.

    October 21, 2010 at 11:37 am |
  113. Drew

I think this oil spill should have taught all oil drill companies not to over look the minor problems with there drills and drilling stations

    October 21, 2010 at 11:37 am |
  114. Gwen

They should have been more prepared for anything that happened. I cried when I found out qabout the oil spill. I am glad they found a way to stop it.

    October 21, 2010 at 11:38 am |
  115. Zachary

I think because of the spill people lost jobs and homes, but BP is doing the best they can.

    October 21, 2010 at 11:41 am |
  116. Zach

They should have been more prepared and have a back up plan to. They hurt a lot of animals and what if animals hurt you? Would you be mad? I think that it was a bad plan all around.

    October 21, 2010 at 11:43 am |
  117. Will

I think that BP should remember to make sure that the oil rigs get checked every couple of months, like bridges.

    October 21, 2010 at 11:44 am |
  118. Eva

BP should have had another plan just in case it happened because many animals that were around died.

    October 21, 2010 at 11:45 am |
  119. Alec

I think that we shouldn't use oil for cars and if we do, we should have a backup plan in case we have another oil spill.

    October 21, 2010 at 11:47 am |
  120. madelynn

i think people should be more careful and think before you say things or do things

    October 21, 2010 at 11:48 am |
  121. Peyton

I think we should have oil rigs like that checked on once a month because it is a big thing to have that happen.

    October 21, 2010 at 11:49 am |
  122. Hannah

what we can learn from it is to be more careful when you are on an oil machine. you could also learn that things don't always go the way you planned.

    October 21, 2010 at 11:51 am |
  123. tiffany

i say this, it teaches us not to go oil hunting in the ocean for one we need to focus on ways to look in the future and helps us save money to biuld things that will inprove our future

    October 21, 2010 at 12:10 pm |
  124. Zack

We now know that an oil not only affect people, but it effects marine life, and the economy. Also, we have realized that these oil spills affects the mental mindset of all the people effected, which in turn hurts their family and friends..

    October 21, 2010 at 12:20 pm |
  125. matt

how to stop it faster next time.if it happens again.

    October 21, 2010 at 12:27 pm |
  126. eliyahu

In answering this question, we usually focus on what we can learn so as not to repeat our mistake. But we can also learn from what we did right. Many, many people, young and old were very shaken, and everyone wanted to help so badly, and many did. So what we can learn from the oil spill is that we really do care about our planet and about all life.

    October 21, 2010 at 12:40 pm |
  127. Nathan

What can be learned is to make sure everything works and won't break and cause another oil spill as bad or worse than this one.

    October 21, 2010 at 12:42 pm |
  128. Ethan

An important lesson we have to learn is that we can never take nature for granted. The oil spill has affected many people's lives because they had to stop work and clean it up.

    October 21, 2010 at 12:44 pm |
  129. Justine

I think a number of things could be learned. First, we should have people thinking and testing different ways to contain oil more effectively. Second, I think the government should create stricter guidelines on how to keep an oil rig safe.

    October 21, 2010 at 12:50 pm |
  130. Tyler

I think we should have been more prepared for something like this because we should have known something like that would have happend

    October 21, 2010 at 12:51 pm |
  131. Ailing

The Earth is being ruined by us humans. The oil spill is a great lesson for us to learn that the Earth needs our help to stay healthy.

    October 21, 2010 at 1:04 pm |
  132. Gabrielle

I learned that the oil spill can kill a-lot of creatures, and its heart breaking that the animals have to sufer things that we did. Even my mom cried cause we saw a pelican that was covered in oil, it was very sad.

    October 21, 2010 at 1:17 pm |
  133. Cassie

OMG! They are doing such a good job taking full responsibility of the spill and cleaning it all up! Keep Going! 😛

    October 21, 2010 at 1:21 pm |
  134. RaeAnne

I think we have all learned the lesson of unity and of how this world can all come together as one to fix such a drastic problem. Much like all the wars we help with, they are returning the favor!

    October 21, 2010 at 1:29 pm |
  135. Nathaniel

I'm really happy that we have made this much progress but there is still much more to do.

    October 21, 2010 at 1:41 pm |
  136. robert

a lot could be learned from the oil spill i think the drilling should stop so there will not be anther oil spill.

    October 21, 2010 at 1:52 pm |
  137. Karina

Something that can be leanerd from the 2010 oil spill is that if there is another one we will know what to do. Another thing is that we learned how to work together.

    October 21, 2010 at 1:54 pm |
  138. Brandon

I think we learned that we should make sure that these caps for the oil is tight enough. We should be prepared for something that happens like the oil spill

    October 21, 2010 at 1:56 pm |
  139. Skylar

I think we could learn that you should always observe things to prevent this kind of stuff from happening and harming all the animals that live in the Gulf Of Mexico. If we do this we could minimize the possibilities of this happeneing again.

    October 21, 2010 at 1:56 pm |
  140. John

Here are the things that I think they have learned from this experience. I think they learned that the wild life is important to the fishing industry. Yes, it does kill other animals but it can hurt the population of the fishing industry. I think they learned that the oil pollution is bad if it spreads to far. I think they would be prepared if the oil spill were to happen again. They learned that it is a good thing to fight the pollution for animals and for the land. That is what I think they have learned from this experience.

    October 21, 2010 at 1:59 pm |
  141. Emily

I believe that we always need to make sure that the machine, the one that caused the problem is in very good condition and won't make anything worse, because I know that machines break down from time to time.

    October 21, 2010 at 1:59 pm |
  142. Ben

I think we should be more aware and be prepared. Also, we should build better equipment

    October 21, 2010 at 2:01 pm |
  143. catlin

what i think we can learn from it is, that cleaning up the oil and helping the beaches to get rid of the oil we can have or save one more animal just by helping picking up garbage. Last we learned that oil can do much damage, and oil is very dangorus to be around.

    October 21, 2010 at 2:02 pm |
  144. Amanda

I think that we have learned to be more aware and the we should do monthly checks on our oil machinery, especially if it is in the water.

    October 21, 2010 at 2:02 pm |
  145. Jalen

From the oil spills happening I learned that the oil spill damaged acres and acres of land. They are still recovering today trying to get oil off the beaches, and in the water and even on the street. I think it affected the way people were confortable living there. I feel bad about it and if I could do something about it I would.

    October 21, 2010 at 2:03 pm |
  146. Payton

I think they should have checked all the pieces before it was built. I think they have really learned a lesson and should be more prepared by checking things better.

    October 21, 2010 at 2:05 pm |
  147. austin

I think the lesson learned is that oil is very messy and everyone should help in it..

    October 21, 2010 at 2:10 pm |
  148. Jordan

I think that it really stresses the point that we as Americans can do anything.

    October 21, 2010 at 2:11 pm |
  149. Ryley

I think that they learned to watch the vessil some more and be aware of whats happening

    October 21, 2010 at 2:11 pm |
  150. Amanda

I think we have had a lesson learned and we should do checkups on the oil machinery, especially if it's going to be in the water.

    October 21, 2010 at 2:11 pm |
  151. Danielle

I think that we have learned to be patient.Somethings take time like cleaning up the spill, but if we can just be patient for a little while longer I think we will be happy with the outcome.

    October 21, 2010 at 2:12 pm |
  152. April

I think we can learn by this by making sure when we go boating to mach sure all of our oil tank is shut tightly.

    October 21, 2010 at 2:12 pm |
  153. Alyssa

I think you can learn and be more careful otherwise you will be stuck with the same situation again so I think you could be more helpful.

    October 21, 2010 at 2:12 pm |
  154. Niles

I think the oil spill will make the oil co. make it so a nother spill will not happen agian.

    October 21, 2010 at 2:12 pm |
  155. Drake

that you can do anything if you just put your mind to it. You can also learn all of the jobs that people do to help and protect the wildlife and plants that live on the islands where the oil infected.

    October 21, 2010 at 2:13 pm |
  156. Bryce

I think that we can learn from this in alot of ways.
    1. Now we know what to do if this ever happens again.
    2. We know that things have to be delt with quicker than we did with this. It seemed like a long time that the oil just keeped spilling out.

    October 21, 2010 at 2:13 pm |
  157. Mickayla

I think that this oil spill will teach Americans and people all over the world that it is not right or safe to be takeing up parts of the ocean to get oil, many animals were and it causes people a whole lot of stress. Maybe this will push scientist even harder to find a gasoline substitution.

    October 21, 2010 at 2:13 pm |
  158. Dylan

At least alot of the oil in the gulf is gone. But know the oil is in the wetlands.

    October 21, 2010 at 2:13 pm |
  159. Haley

I think people can learn from BPs mistake. Because they didn't have a plan for a fire. They sould of had a plan for a fire.

    October 21, 2010 at 2:14 pm |
  160. Dominique

What we learned was that we should be more care full and we should check the caps on the oil every now and then. I am so glade this is starting to get better.

    October 21, 2010 at 2:15 pm |
  161. Angela

I think the news about the clean up is great! If only more could have been done.

    October 21, 2010 at 2:16 pm |
  162. Misty

What I think that can be learned from this horrible event, is basically not to do it again, even though it could have been a lot worse, we shouldn't be thinking of just ourselves, but the sea mammals that have the oceans as their habitats.

    October 21, 2010 at 2:26 pm |
  163. Elan

One of the reasons this happened is BP was not monitoring the "Blowout Preventer." One can learn to always check your work so this kind of stuff doesn't happen.

    October 21, 2010 at 2:31 pm |
  164. J.T.

I think we should just get rid of all the offshore oil rigs out of the Gulf.

    October 21, 2010 at 3:03 pm |
  165. Jade

I am really happy that some of the animals are geting rescued. I hope all them get recued. From teh oil spill.

    October 21, 2010 at 3:05 pm |
  166. Jade

I am really happy that some of the animals are geting rescued. I hope all them get recued. From the oil spill.

    October 21, 2010 at 3:06 pm |
  167. Johnny

We need to make double-checks on the oil reef next time we bring oil to different states/countries. At least twice day. Also make more machines that cleaned the oil spill. That might prevent it next time that happens.

    October 21, 2010 at 3:22 pm |
  168. Joshua

I learned that you dont know what you have until it gone or in this case a diaster.

    October 21, 2010 at 3:29 pm |
  169. Kyle

People should make sure that all pipelines for oil have no holes, cracks, or loose bolts that hold the pipes together

    October 21, 2010 at 3:34 pm |
  170. Ana

There is still a lot of animals and people affected by the spill they should clean it up fast so the animals can go back to the wild

    October 21, 2010 at 3:37 pm |
  171. Kyra

Anything can happen. The Oil spill showed us that we have to prepare for the worst and then hope it doesn't happen.

    October 21, 2010 at 3:41 pm |
  172. derrick

i'm just glad that the oil was sealed and i just hope that you guys can clean up the gulf of mexico and hope that this will never happen again. and we better be extra careful when we bring oil from states and countries plus you should be ready when this happen again .

    October 21, 2010 at 3:50 pm |
  173. Cassidy

I think it is great that they are working so hard to fix the mess that they started 6 months ago, they are making great progress! I'm hoping that they have learned from the mistakes that they made and that this won't happen again.

    October 21, 2010 at 3:59 pm |
  174. Kyra

This teaches us a very important measage of how to work together to make a difference. From the way were workig together we can stop the oil and save the animals

    October 21, 2010 at 4:05 pm |
  175. Sarah

I think the lesson learned is that the drilling buisness is very dangerous and can effect the environment and all humans involved. We need to remember that this incident CAN happen again and we need to take all necessary precautions.

    October 21, 2010 at 4:06 pm |
  176. Josie

A lesson i have learned is thst bp needs to be more careful and next time and be sure to double check the cap.I also learn about all the animals that BP almost killed.

    October 21, 2010 at 4:08 pm |
  177. jared

I can't beleive how much oil spilled into the coasts of North America I hope they can clean it up if not what will America do next?

    October 21, 2010 at 4:16 pm |
  178. O

I am hope BP and other oil companies have learned from this tragic event. I am so glad and thankful to all of the people that have helped to clean this mess up. I love seeing the progress that we have made. I think everyone that is in the oil industry is taking more precaution than ever. It is a happy thing to watch the Gulf being cleaned and well taken care of now.

    October 21, 2010 at 4:17 pm |
  179. Jonie

I hope they have learned their lesson and improve deep ocean oiling. I don't want all those wild animals to die to not teach us humans a lesson.

    October 21, 2010 at 4:18 pm |
  180. Ashton

I think they should keep drilling

    October 21, 2010 at 4:18 pm |
  181. Ethan

There are many things we can learn as oil consumers. The first would be that we should be changing how we look at oil. we should start looking at oil like an endangered energy source. We should also clicked into our minds that we should be looking for more reusable energy resources, and how to improve solar panels and wind turbines. We should not rely fully on oil, it will not be here forever.

    October 21, 2010 at 4:22 pm |
  182. Eric

I think we should be done with the cleaning of the oil spill already, its been 6 months. P.S. Im commenting on this to get an A from my teacher MR.Samiljan so yeah MR.Samiljan YOUR AWESOME thanks Carl Azuz YOUR AWESOME TOO!

    October 21, 2010 at 4:30 pm |
  183. Josie

The lesson many people will learn is we have to be more careful out there. But i bet BP will just keep drilling. to a lot of companies out there money is all that matters...... they need to learn that no matter how small, everything matters. even the animals that got hurt. when will they learn money can't bring back habitats.

    October 21, 2010 at 4:34 pm |
  184. Liz

we have all learned different leasons form the bp oil spill. some people learned the harm that we (as humans) can do to the wildlife, while others learned to potential threat it gave to humans in food consumtion and enviroment. we can also take out of this, that some mistakes we make are going to be to big to completly clean up.

    October 21, 2010 at 4:55 pm |
  185. Hunter

I think since they cleared it up and helped the marine life that they should be ok but as many animals they killed. Thousands of people hate BP for what happened and they are fully resposable but tht doesn't mean they have to show it. People you are putting BP out of Business the least you cand do is try to care

    October 21, 2010 at 4:56 pm |
  186. Paige

I think that we have learned that we need to be careful. We learned that if we don't be careful with things that can harm our enviroment. We hurt the economies down south becasue of sea food and we hurt the animals that live down. Hopefully we have learned from this mistake.

    October 21, 2010 at 5:00 pm |
  187. Taylor

That is amazing how much we as just ordinary people could do. I think that everyone that cared helped out.

    October 21, 2010 at 5:00 pm |
  188. RRS

We have learned that big companies have a social responsibility to take care of the Earth. Making money should not be their main priority.

    October 21, 2010 at 5:06 pm |
  189. Nico

Alternative energy, alternative energy, and alternative energy.

    October 21, 2010 at 5:11 pm |
  190. Hunter

People have to work together in tough times. That way we can keep the animals and other people healthy and safe. Also, people can't rely on other people to get the job done. If you want something done you have to stick time, effort, and commitment into the job, until it is done.

    October 21, 2010 at 5:11 pm |
  191. Hannah

I we have learned that we cannot drill oil in the middle of the ocean. But then again we need it so they have to be careful while their drilling.

    October 21, 2010 at 5:13 pm |
  192. Hunter

We have to be prepared for what might happen. BP wasn't prepared, but next time something like this happens we will have the tools and resources to get the job done.

    October 21, 2010 at 5:17 pm |
  193. Kamran

I think that fixing the well was one part of the job. I know that it was a big part, but we still have to clean up this mess BP made for people down south. I think people who try and help are really thoughtful and unselfish and really think they can make a change, and just a little thing can make a big change. I hope BP and all other oil companies have learned their lesson.

    October 21, 2010 at 5:20 pm |
  194. Jason

I think that this will teach, not just BP, but every Oil company to be more prepared for something like this to happen. That way the effects wont be as bad.

    October 21, 2010 at 5:30 pm |
  195. Matthew

we have learned that when we do this again if we do this again we will have to make sure that everything is able to work and keep working especially in deep water

    October 21, 2010 at 5:31 pm |
  196. Elizabeth

Well, we know not to trust BP with our oil now.

    October 21, 2010 at 5:40 pm |
  197. Elijah

I believe we learned a lot from this tragedy... we need to ensure that we be cautious when carrying large amounts of oil over clean, damageable bodies of water, especially over ones, like the Gulf of Mexico, in which the nearby people depend on for fun and dinner.

    October 21, 2010 at 5:40 pm |
  198. Ryry

So many animals have been affected by the oil spill. They should learn that all the animals should be protected and prepare better. I have a dog named Botey and I wouldn't want her getting affected by the oil spill if i lived on the gulf.

They are doing a great job with the spill, do they need any help?

    October 21, 2010 at 5:45 pm |
  200. john

i think that they should put a wall in the middle of the sea and the oil men.

    October 21, 2010 at 5:50 pm |
  201. Miranda

I think that people have learned to be more responsible and careful. And also, people have learned that a lot of damage can be done by an oil spill, not only affecting the sea life, but also human life.

    October 21, 2010 at 6:01 pm |
  202. Chayse

I think we learned that mining in the Gulf of Mexico is wrong. Because there are tons of places on land in america where we can get or oil. So this is wrong and the sea mammals and other animals shouldn't have to take this.

    October 21, 2010 at 6:01 pm |
  203. Rachel

I think that people shouldn't think nothing wrongs going to happen when we are drilling for oil.

    October 21, 2010 at 6:03 pm |
  204. Miranda C

I think that people have learned that they need to be more responsible and careful. And that the oil didn't just affect the fish and other animals in the gulf, but it really affected people as well.....

i think it is great that people sign up and help save animals that were int he oil spill

    October 21, 2010 at 6:06 pm |
  206. Nadia

I think we learned that we can't really trust bp anymore but then again that would be my opinion, and i also think we could do more to help the Gulf.

    October 21, 2010 at 6:10 pm |
  207. Jackson

That maybe drilling should be made a little safer for everybody

    October 21, 2010 at 6:12 pm |

I think people should be grateful that all the oil is clean up.... People keep complaining....I know it's their own right but, It's over now.

  209. Ryan

Well, you guys might think that we haved learn a lot about this lesson but i thinked that we didn't learn much from it because it has already happend once so why did it happen agin it. Really makes the american people look stupid, and i me that is all of us i now that you might think that you are beter than others, But i don't care if you are red ,blake, white, purple, blue,or even hot pink. God made us all equal so loets all face it that we all faled and if you don't think so well get over it. 🙂
    Sincerly,
    Ryan

i think we all know not to trust BP.

people learned from this oil spill that not every problem can be fixed very easily thank you

    October 21, 2010 at 6:56 pm |
  212. Naomi

I think that we obviously learned that pollution is BAD. If we hadn't stopped the oil spill, it couldve gotten worse. It couldve eventually been unstoppable. Then we would live the rest of our lives with ugly oceans, not beautiful like they should be. Not to mention the fact that there would probably be close to no animals in the ocean. We are lucky we saved the ones we did. We also learned that if we arent careful one thing can lead to another. We were polluting, without knowing how bad it was. Then the oil spill got into the ocean... This affected alot of things such as animals, plant life, and actually if you think about it our lives. We will definately be careful next time 🙂

    October 21, 2010 at 6:59 pm |
  213. Valerie

I think it is a great thing that they worked so hard to get the oil to stop coming out, and to clean all of the lucky animals caught to be cleaned and to recover. What a mess it was six months ago.

    October 21, 2010 at 7:02 pm |
  214. Cheyenne

I think we learned that our oil rigs are very unsecure and that in the future we should be more aware of what has happen and the likelyness that it shall happen again

    October 21, 2010 at 7:04 pm |
  215. Breanna

I think its good that they hve been working so hard to fix the disaster the started, that are making a good progress! I also think its good the rescued so many animals:) but i hope it doesn't ever happen again.

    October 21, 2010 at 7:04 pm |
  216. Kimberly

I think we learned that the oil spills always happen in the water,so we need to deliver it another way than water.

i'm pleased to see all of these people working so hard to help the planet

we learnd a valueble lesson to be more careful with our oil

    October 21, 2010 at 7:14 pm |

We have learned what great strength our country really has. We have also learned that only if the cause effects enough people, will we come together, but when we do we can really come together and make things right.

  221. Farah

I learned that never polute even though i dont it is not good for any living or non living organism you will never learn or even know where the garbage went a animal could it it al large one or even a big one the could sufficate and poissibley die from that

    October 21, 2010 at 7:21 pm |
  222. Farah

it is very bad for the enviroment help clean it up no matter what it takes if i was the president of bp i would do anything to save the world earth

    October 21, 2010 at 7:24 pm |
  223. coleman

Im just glad most of the oil has been boomed or dispersed. Now we need to focus on the wetlands and miles of beaches that still have oil scattered on them.

    October 21, 2010 at 7:26 pm |
  224. Victoria

I think we have learned that no one is perfect but that if we don't want everything and everyone to die we have to try harder. We can not keep slacking off and not trying to fix the problems. We wouldn't have had that problem if it wasn't for a cap coming off, so they need to try harder.

    October 21, 2010 at 7:28 pm |
  225. Zach

For once, to be more cautious. The oil spill was just one of the many disasters we will face around the world, and if we aren't careful, then more disasters will come. But then again, anything can happen.

    October 21, 2010 at 7:41 pm |
  226. Camryn

I think a big lesson learned here was that if we keep messing with the Earth like this, it can harm the Earth. Obviously we have a NEED to keep drilling, so we should, but it's just Earth's little way of reminding us not to mess with it too much.

    October 21, 2010 at 7:46 pm |
  227. corinne

I am so happy for the animals and I hope that the resturants near the gulf weren't affected too much. I also think more things should sponser and fund the clean up of the animals.

    October 21, 2010 at 7:47 pm |
  228. Karina

I think we learne that every dose of oil that we put in the oceans kills a percentage of the wildllife. So, we should be much more carefull.

    October 21, 2010 at 7:47 pm |
  229. Karina

I think that we all learned that we need to be more carful when it comes to drilling.

    October 21, 2010 at 7:52 pm |
  231. Julie Rebecca

Well, it's that oil in the ocean sucks. It's that oil can actually have an effect on the enviroment. Nothing is really going to be done, because all we can do is be careful with the oil. All this has really done is raise awareness and pollute our ocean, really. BP kinda sucks.

    October 21, 2010 at 7:52 pm |
  232. Bailee

We need to be more careful and aware of things that might happen like the oil spill. Lots of animals and land were hurt. The great thing about it is that we have done so much to help clean it up be done with it.

    October 21, 2010 at 7:52 pm |
  233. O'Maree

I think we have learned never to pump gas near a big body of water. The oil spill was not only affecting us but also the wild life.

    October 21, 2010 at 7:54 pm |
  234. Brody

I belive that now we know that there are now unsafe parts in oil drilling and that we should stop it. Animals don't have to suffer for what we don't need so why do we still make them suffer? D:)

    October 21, 2010 at 7:55 pm |
  235. Anonymous

I think we have learned that stuff like this can happen and that we need to take a chance to fix this so it will no happen again.

    October 21, 2010 at 8:06 pm |
  236. Joshua

I think that sometimes a problem happens and it has happened before and it will happen again and again so I think that they should still keep drilling.

    October 21, 2010 at 8:10 pm |
  237. Johnny

It is important to learn from this experience that even with multiple fail safes there is always a possibility of accidents.

    October 21, 2010 at 8:33 pm |
  238. zach

The spill took a big impact on the Gulf Coast.B.P has done the job and every one is feeling just fine.Believe me i live in Mississippi. It took a big portion of money from the seafood industry, but we are rebuilding just fine!

    October 21, 2010 at 8:36 pm |
  239. Keenan

Maybe we should stop drilling with rarley used and old oil rigs.

    October 21, 2010 at 8:42 pm |
  240. Amelia

I think we learned a lot about this spill. And that team work can make a change. If we all sat back and did nothing about it, it would have been a gigantic mess. And when you when to the gulf of Mexico beach you would have been in sludge over your head over time.

    October 21, 2010 at 8:42 pm |
  241. Simon

I think that our lesson has not yet been learned , beacause if it had been learned, then they would find another way to get oil.But I am glad that they fixed this. And if they do keep drilling, I just hope they are more careful doing it.

    October 21, 2010 at 8:44 pm |
  242. Kimberly

I think that one important lesson that needs to be learned is that wild animals have to be safe and to clean the gulf before any other animals are found dead because no one wants to see a once living thing dead. Its also important to check up on the under water pipes so that this doesnt happen again.

    October 21, 2010 at 8:45 pm |
  243. nicholas

i think they should keep drilling becuse you never know how much oil is still down there. it better safe then sorry. the marine animals need as much or more safety than us if we want them to stay here.

    October 21, 2010 at 8:46 pm |
  244. hope

that we can never be to careful and we must always, always think of the consequences before we jump right into something.

    October 21, 2010 at 8:46 pm |
  245. Nick

I think we have learned that off shore drilling is not the safest way to obtain oil and that new restrictions should be put oil wells. Hopefully we have learned from our mistakes and we will make sure this never happens again.

    October 21, 2010 at 8:57 pm |
  246. Lily

We learned people should be checking for all the possible dangers even if they are unlikely to happen.

    October 21, 2010 at 9:02 pm |
  247. Jacob

I think this will teach us to go through daily checks on oil rigs. But it is really good that we got the problem solved but we have to wait tell the oil is all cleaned up.

    October 21, 2010 at 9:12 pm |
  248. conner

The oil spill is hurting no doubt but we need to do something and stop talking about it.

    October 21, 2010 at 9:13 pm |
  249. beker

i think they have to be mor carfull to help prevent more oil spills from hapening 🙂

    October 21, 2010 at 9:17 pm |
  250. katia!

well i think people learned to be more careful and we also learned that we can try to do this by helping clean the ocean. something can be done with the help of others.

    October 21, 2010 at 9:56 pm |
  251. Tebel

I think next time we check it weekly and it's breaking we can fix it fast. I'm just glad it's almost over and i'm glad the animals arent all dead.

    October 21, 2010 at 10:21 pm |
  252. chantel

we should have taken the help from other countries when we had the chance now we'have to fish for oil for years to come.

    October 21, 2010 at 10:34 pm |
  253. Amanda

Maybe we have learned, maybe we haven't, as long as we are not being arigent we shall prosper.

    October 21, 2010 at 10:43 pm |
  254. cristina

I think that what is learned is that they have to be very careful about the animals because you never know how their doing especially in an oil spill like this that is one of the biggest ones

    October 21, 2010 at 10:44 pm |
  255. Paari

I think that BP and others should be more careful while drilling. It is sad to see animals, people, and plants suffering for no reason. The cleanup is going well.

    October 21, 2010 at 11:12 pm |
  256. Emma

I think that Obama needs to start attempting to
help with all these problems, if CNN STUDENT
NEWS is finding all these bad problems then
why dosen't he do anything about it?I think
he needs to fulfill his duties as president.

    October 21, 2010 at 11:16 pm |
  257. Austin

What can we learn from the Gulf oil spill, well first off we can learn to be more cautious when drilling underwater. I think that we learned to make sure that blowout preventers are in prefect working order. I also think that we learned to be a little more cautious when drilling because there were a lot animals affected by the spill. All in all I think that we learned quite a bit from the spill, but I’m not saying that it wont happen again.

    October 21, 2010 at 11:58 pm |
  258. Janella

I think we did learn a valuble lesson in all of this, we finally learned what off shore drilling can do, not only to us, but to the plants and animals around us too. And as long as we keep of shore drilling legal then this will happen agien exept next time it will be much much worse! i think that if we keep off shor drilling then we never really learn our own lesson about off shore driiling how it's hurt full and dangerous to us and everything around us!:-<

    October 22, 2010 at 12:11 am |
  259. mike

What i think can be learned from it is that we human are greedy since everyday we take gallons of oil from the earth and we are accountable for what we have done.

    October 22, 2010 at 5:39 am |
  260. Tristan

I think that we have learned to make things more study and stable and able to withstand more damage in cases of emergncy.

    October 22, 2010 at 7:14 am |
  261. Paul

We shouldn't try putting oil rigs in the ocean, its happened before with ships and all that stuff, so i really don't think we should be putting them in the ocean.

    October 22, 2010 at 7:32 am |
  262. Ellen

I think that the company should be more careful with the design of the under water parts of the oil rigs. What we can learn from this event is that it is hard for us to meet our demand for resources withought changing the earth.

    October 22, 2010 at 7:51 am |
  263. Myranda

I think we could learn that oil is harmful and that people should make sure all of the equipment that is being used is working properly. I'm sure something was wrong with the equipment because how else would we have had that oil spill unless someone wasn't doing their job properly.

    October 22, 2010 at 8:23 am |
  264. Misaki

I think it was great news that the wilderness was saved but, I think we have learned that we should protect the environment .

    October 22, 2010 at 8:33 am |
  265. lauren

If we are not careful we could really hurt the enviorment.

    October 22, 2010 at 8:38 am |
  266. Meg

I think that we should be more prepared, incase of another spill.

    October 22, 2010 at 8:39 am |
  267. kenny

i think that companys should be more responsable!

    October 22, 2010 at 8:40 am |
  268. Isaac

one lesson we may have learned already but need to learn again is that there should be more safety precautions especially when mining oil.

    October 22, 2010 at 9:42 am |
  269. Nadav

I think that we could do a better job in terms of monitering our large and potentialy dangerous energy sources. This would help the economy and the envoronment.

    October 22, 2010 at 9:54 am |
  270. Sarah

We will learn that we should stop being so greedy. It seems like we don't care about what happens, until something does.

    October 22, 2010 at 9:56 am |
  271. nick

that we [the United states of America] need to push business who have oil rigs to be more safe or we are going to be losing alot more sealife.

    October 22, 2010 at 9:56 am |
  272. Alan

I think that BP needs to be more caucious of where they drill, and they need to make sure there parts are working. If all of there parts worked none of the people would lose their jobs from fishing.

    October 22, 2010 at 10:02 am |
  273. Nadav

The world needs to have a healthy environment in order to sustain future generations and a healthful world.

  274. trevon

I think that the oil spill needs to be fixed and these other probs needs to be fixed too also i think the chilean miners are happy to be above ground level instead of below ground level they were playin against the people who rescued them and i hope the rescures win

    October 22, 2010 at 10:04 am |
  275. Oliver

I think we should be more careful when we drill in the ocean, and if other companies have learned anything about this, it is that they shouldn't make the same mistake.

    October 22, 2010 at 10:07 am |
  276. nick

Hi I think that we need to use other energy sources or we will still have these horrible oil rigs in are ocean with a possiblity of leaking

    October 22, 2010 at 10:07 am |
  277. Fiala

I'm pretty sure that we have learned our leason. 🙂 But I don't think that will ever stop us from having another spill. 🙁 All it takes is one little mishap to destroy the ecosystem.

    October 22, 2010 at 10:26 am |
  278. Gabriela

I think that the wildlife has gone through a lot and people need to start caring about these type of stuff because most of the wild life has been rescued but most haven't. Which is a problem people should be concerned about.

    October 22, 2010 at 10:26 am |
  279. naseer

I think that after the oil spill how horribly tragic it was that they will be more causious and check to see if everything is working properly because thats is how a lot of horriible accidents happen

    October 22, 2010 at 10:27 am |
  280. Cheyanne

I think what we learn from this is that we should be more careful with oil not just with pipes but with ships also.

    October 22, 2010 at 10:29 am |
  281. Ostin

I think next time be careful. This time you should check that thing that keeps it clean. This time we could use less gasoline.

    October 22, 2010 at 10:29 am |
  282. jordan

i think they learned to be more safe and more careful about what they do with the oil drill im glad its finally over.

    October 22, 2010 at 10:29 am |
  283. Ariel

We need to be more care full with oil spill. We need to be care full withthe animals. my lesson is that even that animals are not the sameas we are they still have feelings.

    October 22, 2010 at 10:29 am |
  284. leybis

one of the lessons we learned it to be more care full of what we are doing because one careless misstake can harm so many of use because of just one careless mistake, life's not fare

    October 22, 2010 at 10:30 am |
  285. Miguel

I think that Obama should make BP pay for all the damages.
Obama is only caring about health care and other stuff. I mean that is important to but so is the planet we live in. Obama pay attain their are so many things you have to do for the planet. If you want to keep living in this planet then don’t let BP pollute the ocean

    October 22, 2010 at 10:32 am |
  286. Paolo

Thank goodness that most of the fish in the sea are cured and the ocean is now oil free. But it's all thanks to the vets for treating them with such good care to the sea animals. 6 months pass by and now most of the sea animals are back in good shape.

    October 22, 2010 at 10:32 am |
  287. jordan

Well I think we all should be extra careful when dealing with stuff like this. It would be a great embarassment and disater if it happened again.

    October 22, 2010 at 10:32 am |
  288. Ke$ha

We should be way more careful when we drill. Every moth or so we should have a check on all the equitment used. Over all BP did a great job cleaning up.

    October 22, 2010 at 10:33 am |
  289. Ever

I have to thank god that they survived this thing. I was so happy that they survived and how could they go without food for 2 weeks. The thing is im just happy that there okay.

  290. Stephanie

The oil spill was the most dangerous thing that happen to th Gulf of Mexico. I think that we can learn this by telling others how this happen.

    October 22, 2010 at 10:34 am |
  291. Tatyana

What i think we should learn from it is that we should be more careful to not spill any more oil in the ocean. Then lives will be changed!!

    October 22, 2010 at 10:36 am |
  292. dustin 2

I think that we learned that we need to check back flow preventer be for we put it in.

    October 22, 2010 at 10:41 am |
  293. Alex

I don't think they have learned anything they are going to continue to do it and be careless about it.What needs to happen is that they need to take more precautions and be more careful about it.

    October 22, 2010 at 10:44 am |
  294. DEAN

No president can fix the world but you can help save it we need to give people a chance sometimes....We are going to keep grilling no matter what it is good business. But we need to limit to how muh drill?

    October 22, 2010 at 10:44 am |
  295. Angel

We learned that we need to actually start thinking twice about and when we decide and how to do something. Taking pre-caution

    October 22, 2010 at 10:44 am |
  296. tymaine

i think that our country should check all of the oil drills and make sure that there all up to date so that this dosen't happen again

    October 22, 2010 at 10:49 am |
  297. Logan

It makes me want to cry to know of all the wildlife that died because of this oil spill. I burst out in tears when I think of all of the wildlife animals that have suffered, minor or major because of this. I hate to think of the wildlife' s parents or children and what the animals think of the oil spill. I give all my thanks and gratitude to the people who helped clean up the oil spill, and the animals.

    October 22, 2010 at 10:53 am |

The spill taught us the importance of deep sea drilling safety.

    October 22, 2010 at 11:01 am |

That maney people should be more carefrl in what they do! Its our plnet its not just there own its ours too!!!

    October 22, 2010 at 11:29 am |
  300. Kyle

Not only should we have stricter rules and regulations on offshore drilling, we should probably just put a stop to it all together. What has more value, ecological life, or oil?

    October 22, 2010 at 12:36 pm |
  301. Alex

I think that we need to find another way to power our cars and other things before its too late. We can't just stand here and live our lives like nothings happening!!!! WE NEED TO START WORKING TOGETHER TO HELP!

I think that we all learned a lesson from this. I learned that even natural resources can cause a catastrophe. On the flip side another thing I learned is that our country is really fast in cleaning up their messes. Suprisingly we have been able to do the unperdictable. Good job!

I think that the oil spill taught us that we need to be a lot more careful. If the oil spill were ever to happen again some of the marine wildlife would quite possibly become extinct. Just like any history we need to learn from our mistakes so they don’t happen again.

I think we learned to be more carful and care about the environment. Because a lot of things went wrong when it happened.

the oil spill sucked when all those people had to clean it up at the beach i think they should stop drilling so this does not happen again

i think that we learned not to put are animals in that position but i don't think that they learned anything because they still let them drill holes in the ocean

I agree with you we should be more careful but not be so careful that we stop drilling or they stop use from drilling in vertin places.

The number one lesson learned fomr this disaster is to CHECK ALL EQUIPMENT BEFORE FULL PROSESURES!!!

    October 22, 2010 at 2:24 pm |
  311. Disha

I think that ALL oil drilling companies should be more careful now, not just BP. We shouldn't have needed a record-breaking oil spill, leaving hundreds of marine life dead and adding to the millions of sewage waste in the oceans, to get us to understand that oil-drilling should be more careful.

    October 22, 2010 at 2:27 pm |
  312. Anna

I think that the oil spill really took a toll on everyone because it showed us what we can do to hurt the enviroment. Also it made us have a different perspective on how we can help people and animals.

I think that we should be careful were we drill. Or make sure that if we drill we can seal it right away if it leaks. Also we should drill in an isolated situation.

We have learned alot in the last six months. We should learn to take care of our environment.

We should learn that people should take care of things. Like we should have done with the oil mine. It was not fare to all the animals that died in the oil spill. We should do somethin for them.

    October 22, 2010 at 4:47 pm |
  317. Ashley

WE should learn from the past and not drill in the ocean, because the oil wells might explode AGAIN then we would have to start this whole process over.

I feel like we are taking advantage of the Earth's resources. We need to slow down and take a look at what we've got, and make sure that everything is in order before drilling further into the ocean floor. It's not worth the risk of and environmental disaster.

    October 22, 2010 at 6:38 pm |
  322. ankit

I have learned a lot about it and my thought is that we have to keep the oil well more secure and to make big and strong ones so more oil is took out and the oil rig is safe an dno animals will ever get hurt again.

    October 22, 2010 at 8:19 pm |
  323. Allie

I think we learned that ocean drilling is just not worth the price you pay if it breaks. The bp oil company needs to understand that the life of animals is more important than human needs.

    October 22, 2010 at 8:25 pm |
  324. Akiko

As a result of seeking their immediate profits and neglecting their usual safety control, it connected to the terrible disaster in not only their company or country but also the whole world. So they should realize that a company or project takes the responsibility of the world.

    October 22, 2010 at 8:29 pm |
  325. Emily

I think that we can look at the animals in the environment that got polluted with the oil, and study how their health has gotten better/ worse. I know that their are many people trying to clean up the oil but not as many helping the animals. I think that the animals' health is really important so I wish there could be more people helping the animals.

    October 22, 2010 at 8:30 pm |

I think it is both because t told us how it can hurt the enviroment bad.One ting that i good about it is it made a different perspective on us and the animals.

  327. Lauren

I learned that one small problem can make a BIG deal!! I feel bad for all the animals that have gotten harmed by the oil in the Gulf. I think the oil spill never should have happened in the first place. Even though you can get a lot of oil from underground in the Gulf of Mexico and other water masses, i think they shouldn't have oil pumps near water.

    October 22, 2010 at 9:10 pm |

    October 23, 2010 at 8:05 am |
  335. Emma

I don't think a lot was learned from that... we just spent money to get it fixed and never arranged any huge beach cleanups. The cities and states might have arranged them but the government should have taken part in that.

I am happy that the people are acctully doing something about the spill and saving the wild life that was effected by the oil spill, but we all know there is so much work ahead for BP to make sure this mistake does not happen agaian.

I think that this experience has taught us that offshore drilling is very dangerous and people should now take extra precautions to prevent this from happening again. We can also learn how to work together as a team. It was amazing to see how many people volunteered to help clean this up

I think that it cost a lot of money and hurt many animals. People are going to have to do what ever they have to do to get back on track. I think we all learned that things need to be checked before tragic things happen. Like bridges, roads, etc.

I think oil needs to be transported a diffrent way. I dom=nt know how, mabe airplane or somthing, but not by boat. But I am glad for those people who lived there all thier lives knowing thier ocean is oil-free.

  344. Clarissa

    I think we learned that:
We shouldn't have needed a record-breaking oil spill, leaving hundreds of marine life dead and adding to the millions of sewage waste in the oceans, to get us to understand that oil-drilling should be more careful.

    October 23, 2010 at 4:23 pm |
  345. Aus

Foremost, most of us Americans can walk away with some expereince, awareness, and competence about environmental disasters and the long term repercussions of offshore drilling. We can also take away how imperative is to take safety precautions and not “cut corners” on the job. Unfortunatly it cost the life of 11 men because of a failed blowout preventer steming from an incomplete and hazardous job on the support of the oil rig between the reserve and the piping. It also is an incentive to turn towards green energy, something more ecologically and environmentally friendly and is cleaner, cheaper, and less dangerous to harness. So in retrospect, alot of additional measures could have been done to prevent this disaster, and as well as in the future. We’ve learned of the many dangers of deep-sea drilling and how important safety precautions are in ensuring the safety of others.

    October 23, 2010 at 4:41 pm |
  346. James

I feel the wildlife was heavily impacted from the Gulf of Mexico's spill. BP may have not been responsible, maybe no one was. The lesson from the spill is that you should be careful of your surroundings. The cause of the rig's explosion was unknown. It could have been a torpedo or an overheated engine. The crew members need to be aware of what's going on next time so they don't have another exploded rig. That is one too many rigs lost.

    October 23, 2010 at 6:02 pm |
  347. Kit

They should always have a fast acting back up plan so that only a few gallons leak and less wildlife will be hurt and less clean up. The animals depend on us to keep what we have built from contaminating their homes and their health.

  350. Kurumi

I think we learned that oil is hard to deal with and when there's a spill, all things are affected. I think they should stop drilling in the sea since so much marine life already are becoming extinct even without oil spills.

    October 24, 2010 at 4:43 am |
  351. KAYLEIGH

THEY SHOULD NOT HAVE SHIPS WITH OIL GO NEAR THE OCEAN.IT WOULD HURT ALL THE ANIMALS AGAIN.THAT WOULD RECK THE AREA.

    October 24, 2010 at 7:22 am |
  352. Drew

We can learn from the Gulf Oil Spill. We should have known that when a rig i that close to a body of water it could move into the water. The mght have caused it to rust and he split. At least we losed up the rig and helped a lot wildlife before things started to become extinct.

I think we learned to be more careful about things and we should respect animals more because they won't be there some day if we have any more accedents like the gulf oil spill. By then it'll be to late.

    October 24, 2010 at 12:17 pm |
  355. Ken

we need to make it our priority to stop oil from spilling into bodies of water or else none of the water on the world will be safe for drinking

    October 24, 2010 at 3:10 pm |
  356. Fearillis

We should be more careful with what we do, and not always assume that things are safe without testing it first. I think it's cool how some people in Chile waited and sent prayers for the miners to come up. Hopefully we won't have another oil spill, the wildlife was probably greatly effected.

    October 24, 2010 at 3:42 pm |
  357. Clive

I hope the spill taught the government how to take care of a disaster like that. If something like this happens again maybe it won’t take us six months to get it fixed. I hope it taught big oil companies to follow regulations. What people sometimes forget is that 11 workers on the rig were killed because BP officials ignored specifications.

    October 24, 2010 at 4:36 pm |
  358. Taylor

I think the oil spill taught everyone to be a bit more careful in this country. Some people are very shocked by this beacause we know now how bad one thing can do to hurt the environment, but everyone learns from their mistakes.

i think we learned that not looking at things that could be a threat is a very dangerous thing considering everything is possible and that it could easily become very dangerous and ruin alot of people's lives i also think we should study the animals that survived the oil spill and study them.

    October 24, 2010 at 5:35 pm |

I don't think our lesson is learned I mean we live in America, I hope we learned our lesson but if we don't become more careful then we should just say goodbye to the ocean and the animals in them.

    October 24, 2010 at 7:12 pm |
  366. Sasha

People sometimes only think about themselves and don't think of other
living things such as animals. I still can't believe it took 6 months to block
the oil leak. They could have done it so much faster!

    October 24, 2010 at 8:30 pm |
  367. Conor

We learned (I hope) that we need to put more regulations on big oil and huge corporations in general!

    October 24, 2010 at 8:32 pm |
  368. Emma

That we should be care full when the oil is by a body of water were animals would be dying. Its important that we get some people that wont make a big mess. I know that it was a mistake and they didnt mean to but the need to be careful. To many animals died, more than can be counted. And its bad enough that to ocean is know full of oil.

    October 24, 2010 at 10:26 pm |
  369. Chris

The most important thing we learned is something we all ready knew but needed to be reminded of: How fragile the environment really is and the effect that we, as humans, can do to the very tempermental balance of nature.

    October 24, 2010 at 10:42 pm |
  370. Courtney

I think that we need to be more careful when we are drilling for oil. We need to think of what will happen if things go wrong, and who or what will be effected. I wish people would have thought of that.

    October 24, 2010 at 11:25 pm |
  371. Justin

I think that oil companies should start drilling more off coast.

    October 25, 2010 at 9:22 am |
  372. Eric

We learned to make different chemicals to break down the oil. And we also helped lots of wild life. We learned that deep sea drilling is never safe. Espescially when a rig blows up due to not following saftey regulations.

    October 25, 2010 at 9:25 am |
  373. Hannah

I think we have learned quite a bit. We've learned how to stop a large oil spill that was bound to happen AFTER the fact. But there is still alot for us to learn about how to treat the ecosystem like to give where we take, and to treat it as if it were a part of us, which it is, but we still don't get it.

    October 25, 2010 at 9:47 am |
    • Katiiii

I agree that we should find a safer way to transport oil but we do need to carry it across the ocean so taking that risk might be worth it .

I think bp shouldn't get shut down. They didn't mean to spill the oil in the oceans. Everyone has accidents. If it happans again then I would shut them down cause they should be being really careful about spilling the oil.

  378. Tiffinie

There is a lot to be learned about the oil spill. All the damages it caused and all the money it cost should be a huge red flag to enforce more strict regulations on oil drills. We can't just wipe away this event because, like the oil itself, its smeared and a part of our history. And in order for it to not happen again, we have to take steps now towards prevention, instead of letting it go right back to the way it was.

I think us humans need to be more carefull with the environment. We need to watch what we do and before we do something ask ourselves 'Is this going to hurt the environment?'. I think the kids are helping the planet more than grownups, because us kids are the ones picking up trash and helping to save energy. The grownups should learn a lesson from kids.

We learned that oil drilling can be a good way to spark the economy but it can also be a danger to both humans and animals alike. they should soon have to up grade there way obtaining oil.

  392. carnan

  393. Kevyn

I see the gulf oil spill of 2010 as a reminder to humankind that the system in which we put oil to use is not necessarily without flaw. It shows us that the sooner we find an alternative fuel source, the better.

    October 25, 2010 at 1:16 pm |
  394. Jazmin

There are many lessons that can be learned from the incident with the oil spill in the Gulf. We have learned that offshore drilling is a very dangerous business and that if something goes wrong like which it did; it has a major effect on the environment and the animals. We have learned that if we are going to drill into the earth to get resources we must be responsible and have the right tools to prevent this mistake form happening again.

    October 25, 2010 at 1:22 pm |
  395. Carl

One of the biggest lessons to me, was that we need to be more prepared for the worst case scenario. In this case we were not. Now hundreds of animals, plants, and land have been destroyed by something we should have been ready for.

    October 25, 2010 at 1:24 pm |
  396. Sara

I think that from the oil spill people could learn that its not all about doing work as fast as you can, especially when your dealing wiith oil in the middle of a ocean with a habitat!

    October 25, 2010 at 1:26 pm |
  397. Sydney

In my opinion, the oil spill was a terrible accident that won't be forgotten. A lesson we can all learn from it was to not take the world and nature for granted. Lots of animals died, and it was all because of the oil spill.

    October 25, 2010 at 1:36 pm |
  398. Anna

You can learn to respect nature and the animals that live in it. They need to be protected and cared for. I think everyone has learned a big lesson from the oil spill!

I think the gulf spill is very devistating. i still dont think Bp if helping enough yet even. So they go the cap on the well but the problem is its not the permanent cap. What happens if they open the cap and more oil comes out. i guesss we can just wait and see

the oil spill will be defenitly not one of the things the U.S.A will brag about. the lesson here is to take responsibility for your actions, which BP isn't doing enough of. they should step in and give money to organizations who actually care about what has happened. hopefully other oil companies will have a better understanding about how dangerous drilling oil is and how careful you have to be.

    October 25, 2010 at 6:50 pm |

I hope we can fix all that happened. It was horrible that it happened, we should really be more careful about what we do around stuff that could harm the wildlife or even ourselves. Bot I think we learned our lesson.

Although many animals were rescued many died. The lesson to be learned is that we should protect our earth because we wouldnt want to be contaminated by anything.

I don't necessarily think that we have learned our lesson as far as deep sea drilling. I do think that if it ever happens again we will at least know how to fix it.

I think that we can learn that not everything is set in stone. They were so positive that nothing was going to happen to the Oil tanker that they didn't even think of a back up plan for the small minute chance that something would happen. I mean has no one seen The Titanic?!?!?! The unsinkable ship sank! Nothing is set in stone!

In an addition of 60 minutes the cause of the spill was directed towards mistakes by the owners. Maybe, in the future they should release this information to the government and let them decide what is best. If not take the time to fix it yourself before finishing the job.

look at all the animals lost and now almost dead. We might have lost some vary rare animals or species. now most of the beaches ar all full of oil and other tarable stuff. the oil might have stopped spilling finally but not a lot has been cleaned up yet and lots of animals are still suffering. are they shure that the new cap will hold too. because if it happens again than all the animals that were rescude and releced again they might die this time and our beaches might not be clean fully yet soo it would make them so oily that we might not be able to clean them up this time. even this time they would destoy houses and kill peps. hope you think about it now and for pres. obama to think about what I sayed too.

The lessons that I've learned is that these things do happen, but when they do, we should try to stop the problem before it spreads to make an even bigger mess for us to clean up after.

II think that what we can learn from the oil spill is that it was a very tragic thing. Also how something that can happen across the world effects everyone not just the people that are very close to the incident. I also feel that people should know that even today people are still being impacted by the oil spill. For example the people that couldn’t do their jobs are still being impacted because they might not have enough money and have to work even harder to get the money back. So the main thing is how the people were impacted and how if another disaster like this happens again we could know how to help the people with the problems that they are having.

I think that the oil spill was a terrible and tragic event. The biggest victims were the animals that couldnt save themselves. The good news is that the lasting effects arent as horrible as people predicted and as I thought. This teaches humans who want to get rich of of oil that you can't go digging for oil anywhere you feel like it.

    October 27, 2010 at 4:15 pm |
  448. Paul

When things like that oil spill happen, several animals' lives are put in danger. When people around the area in which the oil spill occured they are put to work. Don't let this happen AGAIN.

  449. Camryn

Ok people. First of all, WHY THE MUFFIN?!?!?! Why did we just decide to saunter off and start diggin for precious oil?!?! I mean really... I think we need to 1: Construct our "oil digger machines " a bit better the next time we drill 2: I know this sounds weird, but STOP DRILLING IN THE OCEAN!!!!!! 3: Follow the regulations as well as possible to prevent any problems 4: LEARN TO SEAL OFF AN OIL LEAK ALLOOOTTTT QUICKER!!!!!!!! Its terrible what happened to the fish and crabs and birds and shrimp and lobsters and poor fishermen and their families..... It depresses me...... 🙁

Just because you want to make money doesn't mean that you can just dig at the bottom of the ocean. Even though the oil spill happened it has caused us to think about what we should be doing to help our environment and be like the people who volunteer their time to help like cleaning up ducks who are covered in oil.

    October 28, 2010 at 9:24 am |
  457. Zach

I think the oil spill was a great lessoned learned. It will teach them that we need to keep our earth clean and not harm anything on it. It took months to clean the oil up. I don’t think they want anything like that to happen again.

    October 28, 2010 at 4:56 pm |
  460. Mike

I feel that, even the oil spill being one of the most tragic events in US history, no one has learned a thing. Yes, the harm the animals got and everything was huge. I fell extremely bad for them because they shouldnt have had something like this happen to them, but seriously, BP did not care one BIT about the spill. They didn't care one bit about the harm of the animals. Why do you think the chief executive quit? He didn't want to lose money! They only cared about the harm the company had gotten-the loss of money. I really think that even if you have to go to measure to go bankrupt, you REALLY should help your planet because it's where you live and it's your life, and we'll be here for a while. It happened about 25 years ago in the Exxon Oil spill in Alaska. That was the worst in history and we never thought it would happen again- but it did. Right here in the gulf. Everything happens agaiin and again because after a while we think that oh it won't happen again. Just like Katrina, and when Camille hit in the 1960s, it was devestating. 40 years later they though "oh this'll never happen again." and Katrina killed thousands (3,000). It's because we don't trust our instinct and go the extra mile/measure. If they would've done more inspections on that oil well like they should have, we would never have this problem. What a shame BP. Your commercials a few years ago actually had something about helping the environment, but you ONLY made it worse.

    October 28, 2010 at 5:18 pm |
  461. Jack

It's too bad we can't learn from our past oil spills. Wildlife, turtles especially and birds will not recover for years from the oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. Our environment is the one hurting the most from oil. I'm not sure if we'll ever learn how to take care of it.

    October 28, 2010 at 5:58 pm |
  462. Kiley

we learned that you have to be prepare. this type of disaster does happen! if it ever happens again we have to be prepared so we can stop it sooner which will harm lesss wildlife

    October 28, 2010 at 6:28 pm |
  463. Jack

I think that this was a really bad thing. Hundreds of people lost their jobs, animals lost their homes, and many also died. Offshore drilling is not safe. This should motivate scientists and others to find another alternative to oil. It already does enough harm to the environment. It only takes one mistake for this to happen again.

    October 28, 2010 at 7:01 pm |
  464. Daniel

i think that we have learned from this devastation is that we need to be more concerned about the wildlife around us. if we are going to bring hazardous material into animals natural environment then we should take into consideration for the effects that a disaster could effect.

    October 28, 2010 at 7:48 pm |
  465. Emma

I THINK WE CAN ALL LEARN FROM THE OIL SPILL . I MEAN PEOPLE ARE NOT CAREFUL ANYMORE ALL THEY CARE ABOUT IS MONEY.I THINK THAT WE SHOULD PROTECT OUR WILDLIFE THAT THE LORD HAS GIVEN US INSTEAD OF ONLY CARING ABOUT THE PROFIT WE MAKE OFF OF IT. SO I GUESS WHAT IM SAYING IS WAKE UP WORLD AND REALIZE THERES MORE TO LIFE THAN MONEY.

Sadly, I dont think they learned their lesson. I personally think they will just move on as if nothing happened. Oil companies really need to pay a little more attention to what they just did; cleaning up isnt enough. They should at least help pay for all the damage they're causing. They owe a lot to the government, enviornment, and to the fishermen for all the stress they caused to them. There should'nt be oil shipment over water anyway.

    October 29, 2010 at 12:09 am |
  473. Konnor

For one, it seems like spills are happening more and more often causing more and more damage. In all these times I don't think that any oil company has stepped up and changed their ways. I think it is only going to get worse and more wildlife will suffer because of the oil company's stupidity. It seems like whenever these things happen we start wanting change maybe for like 2 weeks. Then we are back to our lives just like nothing ever happened. The government must step up and start cracking down on oil companies to prevent further damage to the environment and wildlife. All in all, the lesson learned is that we must watch oil drillings to protect ourselves, the environment, and wildlife and if needed start regulating drills.

Just imagine all those poor animals in the water! What if America got covered in oil? What would we do then? We need to have the same amount of courage that we would have if America was covered! we have learned that we need to have a plan or action to take if something like this ever does happen again. And that we will be trying to fix this oil spill for many years to come.

I think the study of all of that needs to become better so we can learn from our mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes and honestly we have to learn from it. This is something to learn from everyday the commitment of our work helps out the world.

I think that the oil spill should teach us a lesson about how the environment and animal are and can react to things that are affecting them. If there is anything we can do, is just what we've been doing; like cleaning it &helping the animal that got oil on them, and to try to prevent this from happening again, or anything like it.

DON'T DRILL TOO DEEP INTO THE FLIPPING OCEAN!!! the oil spill wouldn't have happened in the first place had you been less ignorant about what happens when you try to get oil from the ocean!

What I learned from the oil spill? That we should learn to be more responsible with our enviornment. This isn't the first time that this has happened, and they all could have easily been avoided. I just don't understand why the government continues to allow these mistakes to keep happening. This epidemic could have killed not just the variety of wildlife, but the people surrounding it. It shouldn't have gone on as long as it did, and I believe that it could have been taken care of faster than it was. I really just hope it won't happen again.

I think that I have learned is to allways be careful. Even professionals can make mistakes that can risk lives of people and animals.

It's kind of funny, because didn't this type of oil spill happen in the past? Of course we in the "human race" won't learn a thing! I'm just hoping it won't happen again, but people can be careless. One person can't do a thing. If we "hippies" unite, then we shall be able to work together and stop human stupidity!!!! 🙂

I think what we can learn from the oil spill is that we should should have a plan on what to do in case of these types of disasters. Like how we should have a way to clean it up ahead of time, or just brainstorm ideas if this happens. As far as the wildlife, we should pay attention to what could happen because of this . We should have thought of ways to clean and save animals in quicker and more efficient.

i think what can be learned about this is that this is an important part and i am happy to see all the animals healthy and okay

Everyone should learn that animal have feelings too not just us.Pepole need to realise that the wildlife is in danger. Thats why everyone shoul help to save the widlife. 😉

I hope that this was a lessan to all of us to be more carful, I also hope that all the animals affected by this get better. It sounds like there are a lot of people pitching in to help out all the wild life that hurt by this mistake that we made. I hope by now we have all learned from our mistakes and that this will never happen again!

I think that we're the only reason why the earth is being, treated like a human with luchimia is because we, made pollution, litter, and hurt to many animals. our kind is teribilly cruel.

I think it was a good thing to experience, cause little things we never notice can cause big problems & we don't take care of things as well as we should and maybe from this experience we'll be more prepared & more cautious.

The oil spill can be dangerous becaues it can cause animals to be sick or maybe death.

I think that the oil spill shows that you should be more aware of nature and that you should take better care of the environment.

I think that you can learn to take care of mother nature and take care of the earth...I know that from now and on many people will see the world with different eyes, I know I will try to pollute less and save more energy just because of an oil spill.

Lessons better be learned from this some people need to learn that somethings aren't good for this Earth. We should keep our Earth clean because we live in it. It's are job to keep it good and clean no matter what. I know some people are going through hard times right now buts thats no reason to get lazy on our job.

I feel so bad for those poor animals. It is not fair that just because of that mistake that the animals did not do makes them suffer.

I think the oil spill had ultimately hurt the enviroment, but the good thing is that it is all over and a lot of those sea animals were rescued.

  522. Tierra

I think the oil spill was a great lesson lerned. It will teach them that we need to keep the Earth clean. And not to harm anything on it. It took months to clean the oil up. I dont think they want to do anything like that again.

    November 1, 2010 at 4:43 pm |
  523. Alyssa

The oil spill was a terrible event. BP Gas Stations have definitely learned that they need to be WAY more careful. But, most of all, people learned that nomatter what you do, either throw a can into the ocean, or cause the biggest oil spill in history, you are hurting the sea, its contents, and even yourself.

    November 1, 2010 at 7:02 pm |
  524. Abby

Before the spill, many people didn't have recycling bins around their house. Even though I have grown up in a family where we DO recycle, I forget some of the time. Now I check myself before I throw something away.
Also, I think that more and more people are looking into ways to get electricity without spending lots or using materials that aren't safe for a good environment.

  525. khirstia

i think we now can learn don't put a oil factory by an ocean it may seem dumb but that will prevent the chance of it spilling and hurting animals.

one thing i think that i would be able to learn from this is that we should have a device that would tell us if something is wrong

  527. Eddie

I think that the oil spill has affected are country physically, emotionally and economically not only did it cost a good amount of money to be fixed but it also killed alot of sea animals and it took some jobs of local fisher's which rely on fish and seafood for their faimily's, hopefully this never happens again.

i think the oil spill killed many animals i wish it never happens again and it made the water dirty

    November 2, 2010 at 4:22 pm |
  529. Aime

I think the next time we attempt something like this, we should know the problems it could cause, and have a way to fix it. If we know the problems then it should be easier to find something to change it. We could maybe make a small replica and do all the worst case scenarios, and then use that to fix it.

  530. celestrial

I think that they should have been more careful because they injured all of those poor animals i hope that they will be more careful next time.

    November 3, 2010 at 11:42 am |
  531. Ashton

I think people need to learn how to fix something temporarily, then once you get it all cleaned up then think of a way to fix it for good, it puts marks in my books for what we need to accomplish more, we can't spend all our time debating. act fast, than evaluate and fix.

This issue has really taken me to heart. The spill has not only put wildlife on the coast in harm's way, but it has also put many people at risk of drinking water contamination. Just to see disgusting, brown gook wash up on shore while you're enjoying yourself at the beach is enough to make anyone think to themselves, "Wow. Are we really the ones responsible for this mess?" And I don't mean them as an individual, but humans in general. I think this spill has really been a wake-up call for all to those realizing the problems of oil pollution and how we really should start taking this "Going Green" stuff seriously.

i think the leson is that do it right the first time so you dont hav eto do it again.

    November 3, 2010 at 7:18 pm |
  534. Camille

I think that we need to learn to take every and all precautions seriously. No one thought that this was going to happen-that's why they decided to drill oil so close to the shoreline. That's another mistake. People need to realize that things like this DO happen, even though they seem like they can't. We as a country just need to be careful, and be responsible.

    November 3, 2010 at 7:42 pm |
  535. Vanessa

many people before the spill thought that the enviorment was their play thing. Know people realize that theymust be more"green" and carefull or then world won't even be ours anymore.

    November 3, 2010 at 7:54 pm |
  536. Lucy

I think that the government has now learned that everyone needs to be prepared because many unexpected things could happen at any moment. I'm sure BP learned that they made a dumb mistake and need to thing of the worst thing that could happen and prepare for it, that way they know what to do and won't do more demoralizing things to the country.

    November 3, 2010 at 11:38 pm |
  537. Brandon

They should have been more careful they hurt those animals

    November 4, 2010 at 7:32 am |
  538. Maggie

I dont think the lesson will be learned. Once they finish cleaning up; BP will most likely go back to drilling.

    November 4, 2010 at 9:04 am |
  539. BRYAN

i think that we have learned to plan ahead for things like this. also to be extra safe.

    November 4, 2010 at 9:12 am |
  540. Paige

BP went with a risky type of blowout preventer, and then they did not maintain it. I hope and I do believe that BP learned a lesson from this horrible disaster. I hope they also learned not to blame others for their own mistakes.

    November 4, 2010 at 10:11 am |
  541. Jenah

I think that we have learned that our environment is way more important than the cost of making oil rigs more safety efficient. The cost of not doing anything can lead to greater costs in having to clean the mistake.

    November 4, 2010 at 3:21 pm |
  542. Zoey

I think that we can learn from this oil spill. It was a horrible thing that happened, things will be a mess for a long time because of it. It killed animals, destroyed the fishing business in many areas, because the fish were dying. I think the oil companies need to be more careful, and try and catch issues with their pumps before it causes a catastrophe.

    November 4, 2010 at 4:42 pm |
  543. Sonia

We can learn that oil is a bad energe sorce and we need to fine a new one but it was really good that all thous people helped all thous animals and if i didn't have to go to school i would have helped out to

    November 4, 2010 at 8:24 pm |
  544. KayLyn

If anything happens like that again, well then people need to be more aware than last time.

    November 4, 2010 at 9:59 pm |
  545. Louren

We can learn that we have to be more careful with oil near any body of water and that we sould never trust BP!

    November 4, 2010 at 11:23 pm |
  546. Katie

Some people don't realize it, but not only do we get oil to run cars (etc.) with from the ocean, but also the petroleum to make plastic. There are so many ways that we depend on this resource. We need to find alternate fuel sources, and soon, because his can't happen again.

    November 5, 2010 at 5:52 am |
  547. Tiana

I think that many things should be learned from that oil spill. One thing being that we need to be more careful with what we all do. When we want to do something we need to think of all possible things that can happen and we need to know how to prevent them. Like with the oil spill, we all need to be ready to take charge and not let the oil spread as far as it did, if something like this was ever to happen again.

    November 5, 2010 at 10:21 am |
  548. Ben

I think that we will learn to check on the oil vents so another catastrophe like this will not happen any time soon. We will definitely be more careful about our oil.

    November 5, 2010 at 10:45 am |
  549. Camryn

We need to learn to respect the enviorment a little better... if we keep doing what we are doing, our actual world will end up like the WALL-E movie... We desert poor Earth and it becomes littered, rusted, no plants, no animals, stacks of trash... And no one is there to help... I say no more. Its the worlds choice...

    November 5, 2010 at 11:59 am |
  550. Courtney

All I can say is that we have to be careful not to let this happen again. We learn from our mistakes so hopefully everyone learned a big lesson. It was such a ripple effect.

    November 8, 2010 at 8:52 am |
  551. Mackenzie

I think that we should have but maybe we haven't learned that alternative energy sources should be used.
