9/11 Anniversary

The terrible events of September 11, 2001 changed the U.S.  You probably know about the terrorist attacks and the emotions that Americans and others around the world experienced that day. What are your thoughts on the ninth anniversary of 9/11? Do you plan to observe the day in any special way?

I believe that 9-11 is sort of like Pearl Harbor. Right now 9-11 is on the forefront of our minds because it was so much more recent, but that doesn't really make it much different. Do you realize that this year makes the 69th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor? What do we do for Pearl Harbor day? Not too much anymore, and eventually 9-11 will be the same. It may not seem true at the moment, but unless we do something this day will soon become just as forgotten as Pearl Harbor is (at least in this generation.)

Personally, I think the day should be used to comfort people who were affected by it. Otherwise I think we shouldn't bring it up unless in prayer for those people.

9/11 was a horrible day. I think everyone should take a little time out of their day and think about what happened. 9/11 was devastating.

We are doing something special on 9/11 because its my dads birthday. If it wasn't his birthday i would not do anything special because thousands of people died that day and it's terrible!!!

The U.S. took a emotional blow that day. People are scared to go on planes now. I think the security systems to get on a plane should protect us.

9 years have passed already?During these nine years, all I've heard about was war, and violence, and "oh my gosh its so tragic in Afganistan". I hope, that after the anniversary, this will simply recede. On the anniversary, I'll simply remember those who have lost their lives during the 9/11 attack, and pray that their families are alright.

I plan to see the day as one to remember the fallen heros of Ground Zero. I know they worked hard for a long time to save people and I am grateful for them.

The 9/11 attacks were terrible, but it should not be said that all Islamic cultures should be trashed. And the anniversary should not be viewed as a rememory of the terror but to make new relationships and forget the past. Thats what I think.

September eleventh it was one oh the worst day since war world 2. I feel still that nobody should judge other people for there mistakes no body is the same. It is the people who didn't.

It is a day that will be long remembered and is close in ways to Pearl Harbor. It started a war that changed the world again and made us once again prove both our militaristic and diplomatic ways. We moved in to the desert like a sandstorm as we did in the Pacific like a wave. In ways we should remember this day and I will take a moment to remember those who died in wars before and today, who gave their lives to make sure we are safe and free.

I plan to take 1 hour on 9/11 to respect and understand what has happened on that day. And say thank you to all the fire fighters and other forces at the 9/11 destruction. The people that lived and that had died saving other people and our country.

The coming of the ninth anniversary of 9/11 holds mixed emotions for me. I plan on observing the day with a sad, yet peaceful mindset. 9/11 to me isn't about the destruction and devastation experienced that day, although i know it's nothing to be dismissed. In my mind, 9/11 is the day that Americans all over the country came together and united to help one part of our nation. Coming together and working towards the common good, that’s what 9/11 brings to me.

I was a wee lad when I heard the news, and at the time, I didn’t really know the significance. Year after year, I was moved by what had no impact on me in the beginning. Now, after growing accustomed to the sorrows in life, I will henceforth look on 9/11 with pride and fortitude that America will forever stand strong, no matter what.

What a historic day in the United States! It is so sad that so many lives were sacrificed.
It was also great that so many people reached out to help the families of the victims-I know a family that went around to schools and asked them to donate teddy bears and write letters to the kids whose parents had died. After a deadline they collected the bears and the letters and took them to their home-some rooms were filled top to bottom. After that they examined the letters and tied them to the bears with a little heart. It's so great that that family went out of their way to help those poor little kids.

Sure it was a bad idea to go and attack the towers, but they were terrorists that attacked not Muslims. The Quran does not teach to do destruction but to promote peace.

It sure was an unfortunate event in U.S. history but we recovered and I don't really know if there is a way to really celebrate it. But we will keep that moment in our memories and hope nothing like that happens again.

  39. Abby

Not really. I just have to know some people are so sad. I have to thank Muslims for celebrating Ramadon Friday.

    September 10, 2010 at 4:44 pm |
  40. Sorn

Carl, i believe that the territory around gound zero, including where the mosque is said to be built, should not be changed what so ever, even though america is a free country, we shouldnt replace the land where one of the worst events in U.S. history was taken place.

    September 10, 2010 at 4:48 pm |
  41. Tom

It's non sense, we shouldnt build over land, even though its two blocks from where one of the worst events that's ever happend in the U.S. was taken place, 9/11. And I know that this is a free country, and some people have strong beliefs that they should not build it, and i'm one of them, that land is sacred, and it was there religious group that caused 9/11, I believe they should build the mosque somewhere other than in that location.

I was only 2 or 3 at the time but I want to spend part of my day studying about 9/11. I remember someone telling me about it a couple years later and I thought it was just wrong to kill that many people.

I plan to celebrate by going to my neighbor's house because they were in New York when the World Trade Center collapsed. I also plan to ask them what it was like to hear the towers crashing down. Then I am going to remember those who died trying to save lives.

9/11 was one of the most terrible things to happen in the USA.I think they will make a memorial for the ones who died in 9/11.Hopefully everyone will pay respects to the dead.

I believe 9/11 is a day to mourn for those who passed in the attacks, and to be aware of the fact that anything could happen, and appreciate that we live in such a safe country.

9/11 was a terrible event that many have suffered. We should all take time to rember all the men and women that lost there lives in NYC, the Pentagon, and Penslvania Also, we should make homemade memorials. I hope that America will never have to see anthing like 9/11 again.

    September 10, 2010 at 6:34 pm |

I think that even though the terrorists have not attacked since 2001, they might have a 10 year plan that will be finished next year. Then, they will have some sort of special surprise attack.

I think it was wrong of the teriorists to attack on September 11. And i am not doing anything to make it a special day, just praying that I dont die.

I think that 9/11 both hurt and helpped the U.S. We saw all the horrible things that happened and that made us be more aware of what happens around the world even though it was a terrible event it did help us in the end.

Well, I don't really recall that day too well, that being I was very young, but I remember the shock and horror a lot of the teachers and adults in my school were in, and I remember when I was home, it was ALL over the news. Now that I'm older, I realize the devastation of the whole ordeal. Rest in peace those of 9/11. God Bless! 🙂

I think that the terrorist who hijacked the four planes on 9/11 where showing that we can be hurt. I do believe that it worked. I plan on spending 9/11 honoring veterans from WWII on the last Honor Flight.

I'm korean but, I was very surprised and sad that day, 9 11, 2001. I felt terrorists were mean stupid. I Also felt sorry and sadness towards the dead people in the building and their families. I think we should never forget the issues that many people died especially an attack. In recent korea, there were issues like 9 11. Cheonan ship issue. We Korea amd America need to remember those issues.

I think the 9/11 anniversary should be celebrated for every one in the U.S. Every one should take a hour out of there day to give thanks to people who lost there lives in this event, which is what i'm doing for today.

I remember 9-11. I was getting ready for school when we turned on the news. I was to young then to understand the magnatude of its damage to the country and to soo many familys who lost loved ones. I now understand at 13 and know how it is to feel after some one you love dies. I didn't understand then but now I do and I just want to say I sorry for any familys, friends, who lost someone special to them. We are all mourning on this sad day but those who left us would most likely not enjoy us crying for them.

I know today is 9/11, and it is a sad day. I feel for the people who lost family members and friends. Although, I do not like to watch programs about 9/11 on T.V. because it freaks me out. I do plan on going to church though to pray for the people who lost family members and friends.

    September 11, 2010 at 10:29 am |
  68. Marti

I really don't know to do what to do about it, it's like it was so terrible there's almost no way to admire the people who sacrificed their life for others enough, so we can only know they will remembered forever, and the acts of the cruel terrorists were terrible. and that we must try as hard as we can to stop it from happening again, which I sure hope we do.

    September 11, 2010 at 11:29 am |
  69. Eric

September 11 was one of the worst days in American history. For some families the pain of lost loved ones still haunts them nine years later.

    September 11, 2010 at 11:52 am |
  70. Lillian

I feel it is unfortunate that the towers had to fall for someone to 'prove' something to the U.S. I certainly wish that today had never happened. What happened nine years ago is the sad aftermath of misunderstandings and violence of immature people. We could've avoided that if people could solve problems with peacful resolutions rather than war and death.

    September 11, 2010 at 12:07 pm |
  71. Ray

I was little when the terrorists attacks happened, but I know that for many Americans, it's burned into their minds like it happened yesterday. My parents still can't believe that it's been nine years to the day that so many people died. For many people it's a day of sadness, remembering that their loved ones along with many others lives ended. Personally, I don't care that their are people hating us so much that they are willing to kill themselves just to kill us. Today I' going to hold my head high, hang the flag out side my door, and thank God for letting me be born in such an amazing country.

  74. Eyre

9/11 will always be remenbered in my heart as the day my veiw of our safe country was shattered. I started to question how we couldn't have seen something like this coming. There have been many things that if we had only looked could have given us some kind of warning. I feel sorry that so many lives were lost. But i believe that some people have taken the terrible tragtie to far as a excuse for violence. I want only peace andno more violence.

I may be only 18 years old but i am old enough to know that tragites can bring out the worse and the good in people. Its time to end the HATE and try to work for more PEACE.

I am tried of hearing that people hate muslims in a whole. I know i can't stand people for reasons but i don't hold 9/11 against all Muslims only the ones who have done the deed. They are the ones that have my pity for they should have tried to understand us.

If there is no understanding than there is no peace. If you have peace without understanding its only a ticking time bomb readly to go off.

I think that 9/11 is one of those events that are out of the blue (of course) and, I know that 9/11 brought many family to their feet and prayer. And, even though I was very, very young when this event happened, It effects every person that lives in the U.S. But, people now don't care about that they just do without thinking. Even though my family didn't lose a family member in the ...misfortune we are still praying for those family's.

9/11 was probobly the worst disaster in history. The remeberance of everyone who died in that disaster should be remembered everyday. Can you imagine being there?

    September 11, 2010 at 9:51 pm |
  82. Lauren

You know i think that every one should care about 9/11 no matter if you were involved or effected by 9/11. I think that 9/11 is a very important day and that we should celebrate by just talking about 9/11. The people that were killed in the 9/11 crash were so inisint and should have neer had to go through the stress of being in the building and haveing to either jump or die. I am a very sympathetic person and have benn watch and listening to all the speeches that have benn said about 9/11. I want to say that im sorry to all the families that have lost a loved one and who have had someone very important to them get hurt or even parilized. <3 🙂 Thank you cnn student news!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🙂

I remember when 9/11 happened. I was in my 2nd grade classroom. A teacher came in screaming that a plane had run into one of the Twin Towers in New York. I thought, "So what." I didn't understand the magnitude of what was going on. Suddenly all of my friends parents came to school to pick them up. Everyone was so afraid. Our lives in America changed that day. I always pray for those who dies on the anniversary of 911, and i think of my friends in second grade.

On second thought there is something special about 9/11. I was pretty young when it happened. I was one or two when it happened, and I am ten now. I can't really remember what hapened but come to think of it, it was a pretty tradgic event. I hope someone else does anything like it ever again. 🙂

i think making people pay for public transportation for a public education is stupid, because its not a private education is it? school is supposed to be free so everyone gets an education so america can keep functioning as a whole.

I think $400 is way to much to ride the school bus. Mabe 100 per kid would be "ok". Riding the school bus is a lot of helps to parents and kids everywere, do we really want to mess that up? NO.

who would be out of thier right mind to stress parents and students with such a silly thing? i understand that the school district may be needing help with money but asking for four hundred is a little much i think. im sure they could find a much more resonable way to ask fer help.

It is heartwrenching, but should we continue to promote government spending on a memorial when we're in a recession? Would you rather have taxdollars go towards a memorial, or to your education or roadways?

I was so sad when the attacks of 9/11 happened. I think it's a tragic memory, but I also think that people can learn from that day. The past can make our future better.

..... $400 thats crazy why cant we just do fundraisers to pay for yourself or others. In my opinion we should have money for the students not the activities.

The 9/11 attacks are probably one of the U.S.'s most upsetting disaster. It should not have happened to all thos innocent people and their families and friends. Not to mention their children.

9/11 is really an upsetting event to look back on. This year was the first year I saw real footage from the 9/11 attacks. Until then I never really knew how tragic the whole thing was. I never knew how much fear everyone was in and how scary it was for that to happened in a country where it seems like nothing like that could happened. Looking back on all of the tragic events that happened that day really makes me thankful for my family.

The attacks on September 11, 2001 were a very devastating event in American history, many people were killed and those who weren't suffered. As this is the ninth year since the attacks, how we are living now is a view of how we have and are dealing with the attack; the reactions to the Moving of the Mosque closer to Ground Zero show how Americans still haven't learned from our past. We still blame a religion for what people do.Yes, it was a horrible day for American history but it was also a day were we were given a chance to learn something about and correct ourselves. I believe that we need to not forget about that past but let go of it, and learn from it, or else history will repeat itself.

9/11 was a sad day i was 5 so i do not remember much but what i remember was i was getting ready for school when i herd a sound on the t.v. and i herd my mom talking to someone. i went out and i watched what happened on the t.v. i did not understand at the time all i knew that it was sad because my mom was crying. now at age 14 i think no matter what day it is you should thank the people who risked there life's for you and pray for there family's and there loss. i feel that 9/11 was a tragic and heartbreaking time and no matter what day it is we should have the flag half staff everyday for those soldiers out there saving are life's at this very moment and that we should pray for them and there family's and that everyday we should sing are national anthem in honer of those who have passed in the line of duty of saving are life's and the ones out there doing it right now 9/11 will never be forgotten.

I feel so awful about 9/11 and those muslims who burned it down. They have no right to have any privledges in the U.S. There's also a video on youtube about 9/11 and it's a little girl talking about her dad dying. Watch it and understand.

When I hear about the horror of 9/11 it makes me sad to think about one of NY's landmarks to be gone along with the hundreds of people. I don't know what the terrorist feels about his actions but with the tradgedy he caused he shiuld feel really guilty and sympathetic to the people he killed and especially their families. All the firefighters that died helping others, I admire their bravery. And others should too.

This day was a sad day for us. So, why keep it alive? We are burning their sacered books because of something people did a while ago? Why? The people who made the planes crash are dead with the planes, so why do we punish the ones who had nothing to do with it? Many think its a right, well I say its a right that shouldn't be used. Im not even saying don't be sad, or don't do religious things on that day for loved ones, im saying don't punish the ones that are living today. Just think, would you really like it if someone was burning something prized of yours?

But if 9/11 is a very tragic day then shouldnt everyone just pray morman or not still pray to god and other people for the tragic day of 9/11. 9/11 is like a very very special day to me now but i just want to know if anyone is going to do it again,if they do i should be a whole lot older and prepared for what could happen again from 9/11. it just makes sick to my stomach that someone would hurt people in america and the rest of the world, people eventually die but 9/11! that is going to make me remember it for ever shall i live.but the guy who had planned that out and the people who had been in the olan of the one dude they are seriously going to have to go to hell! yes it is a bad word to mormen it still is a bad word even to say or write.
GOD Bless the familys that had to suffer! i will pray for them that had someone in the 9/11 crash or jumped i will pray and pray for the familys!

We should have respect for those who died or lived through 9/11.Kinda like pearl harbor. We respect those vets and people and we should respect those of 9/11.

It's weird to think that people can ignore a day like this, as if it never happened. I've heard people make jokes about the national terror and I can not comprehend why. Not only is it wrong, but it is completely disrespectful. This day should be respected by everyone, even if you didn't lose a family member in those attacks. It is a symbol of the strength in our nation, and it should not go by without notice.

I believe the 9/11 anniversary is a grieving time for most victims of loved ones , people who experienced it and more. Some people still can't even believe it happened and that it was a terrorist attack and that someone would do such a terrible thing . I consider the 9/11 as a 911 attack meaning " get help fast ". In my class we researched how many muslims are terrorists and we realized there aren't as many as we thought. There are only about 6 percent.

I remember where I was when I found out. At the time, I didn't think it was that big of a deal because as a 5 year old, I was naive and thought that because this kind of event happened in movies all of the time, the attack wasn't that big of a deal. Media had somehow desensitized me. Now, I realize the magnitude of the event.

i feel so sorry for the people that had family friends or just anybody. that type of stuff nobody really think about it. its the type of stuff that happens in movie and stories. even though it sad and painful they need to stop. everyone knows about 9-11 but as the stories go around and around people keep changing it. its like telephone at the end its differnet than what really happen. and people are having negative affections and blaming people who dont know.
