We're reporting this Wednesday on the most expensive American school ever built: a $578 million K-12 complex in Los Angeles, California. It's not only big; it's luxurious. And it got us thinking about what makes a school good: Is it having state-of-the-art facilities, or is it in the students, teachers, or something else?

I think it is a combination. You want to be able to go to a school with nice teachers and students to be friends with, but you dont want to go to a dump for that. But at the same time you dont want to go to the Buckingham Palace and have everyone there be rude to you. But if I had to pick which one i would like to have more, I would pick having good teachers and friends. Although I would like to go to a luxury school.... 🙂
I think that the teachers are what make the school good not the school's luxury look.The teachers are the one's that make the student's intellegent it doesn't matter what the school looks like.
Everyone working together as a big extended family and doing their job as a student, teacher, or parent is the key to having an awsome school.
In my opinion, a school is a place where provies us with knowledge, thoughts, the initiative for learning, and also the way of life. All these things will and can only be done by the help of teachers, so I think the teachers should be the most important element of a school.
What makes a good school is a lot of good teachers. A good building does not gaurentee a good school, just as a fancy car does not gaurentee a safe drive.
I believe it is all about the teachers, the foundation, the students, and the after school programs. I say that because the teachers are the main reason why there even are schools. The foundation because if it is a poor building setup or settlement, it will be academically poor. The students because they are the main thing about the learning process. finally the after school programs, they help people getting into the school even more. If they are not fun, what is the point of even going to that school. That is what i think makes a good school.
What makes a great school great to me is the education and the ability for the children to learn, not the way the school looks or anything like that. One on one time with the students helps. Toutoring before and after school is also a great quality in good schools.
I think a good building makes you focous more on learning, but I think good teachers are better.
For example, even if you have a great building, but the teachers are all mean and kind of uneducated, you won't really learn anything.

I think its a great idea because its appealing and not like "school". I wouldve loved to go to school as a child or teen if my school was like that. Plus this school is K-12 so its open to all ages and its public. Therefore the children who don't have the luxuries of private schooling get the chance now.

I think that the school appearance helps to make going to school a little cool, but the teachers themselves and the students willingness to learn is what makes a school. I would say that the teachers are the main impact on our kids. If the teachers would renovate their teaching and make it more updated to the kids times they may be more susceptible to the learning. Lastly, we as parents need to reinforce what the kids are learning in school and not leave the task entirely on the teachers. Everyone needs to be envolved. Nicole

I think that good teachers makes great schools. For example, if that school in los angels, don't have any good teachers, there is probably no point going there since your going to school to learn.
I think the teachers makes a skl good. They should do their best and teach us well. Also, I don't think corporal punishment is a good idea, which is a hot issue in Korea.
To me, teacher is the most important. We, students come to school for studying, so the prime motivation should be what we learn from – what knowledge the teachers give us. Therefore, whether the teachers give us interesting lessons, whether they motivate us to study or not maters, the facilities or anything else just the second. Moreover, too luxurious schools are just temptation for students to get distract from study – the prime purpose. Spend this time to build more school or improve the life of teachers instead.
For me a good school isn't the building, but the teachers and the quality of education what makes it great, they can build the best school but it won't matter if the school doesn't produce the best results for the students

What makes a school great is balance. You can't have bad teachers, but you also need a nice facility, fun classes and clubs, and good lunch food. So you shouldn't spend millions of dollars of a school, cause that takes it only halfway there.

i think that its all three .i mean its better to have a clean nice school then a old falling down school and the school itself can affect the students attitude .But its not just the building itself ,the students and the teachers too. the teachers need to be the best that they can afford so the eduction of the schools students is in mind . But the last thing is its students in particular should be only the best and the ones who want to be there so in my opinion the school should be a private school instead of a public .
Teachers are very influential and supportive. Without them we wouldn't gain the education we need. They need to have good teaching methods.
It is great to have a wonderful school, but without great teachers and administrators that is all it is just a building. People may be awed by the style or construction but school is a place for education, a place for learning. The most important thing is if there is an education taking place. Look at third world countries, they often have small buildings or none at all. The whole idea of school is to receive an education, to learn and this can be done almost anywhere. Will this school have higher test scores? Will students learn more because of a building? I think not. It takes good educators who care and want to help students learn.
My homeroom watches CNN Student News every morning before the school day begins. We believe that the students and the teachers are what make a school a home away from home. When my class were asked 'What Makes a Good School?', this was their response. They came to a consensus that it is the people within the school that really matter, rather than the building itself. They agreed that the faculty, administrators, teachers, and students are what goes into making a school successful. The character of the students and staff are what my students stated as being the most important factor in a quality school. One student summed it up best when he quoted our school motto which is, "...We make a difference in our students' lives with; Understanding Hearts and Positive Attitudes".

Having a great school depends on a variety of things not just the outside but the inside. For example, the school can be great by having great teachers that care and really invest their time into the students. The environment should be condusive for the students to feel safe and want to learn. The facility does not have to be the Tahj Mahal but should look pleasant and inviting.

It is true that students have a big impact as well, but it is the teachers who are the leaders at a school, and if the leaders are setting a good example, most of the other people will follow suit.

A good school a couple of things. It is a school where the teachers care about the students, and not just while they are in their class, but it also a school where the students care about their education, and come ready to work.

I think the school in Los Angles is cool and all but seriously we need to learn. Most the kids in class thought the school was awesome. But then they heard about the teachers and said, " Even better." All I could think of is what if that was you? What would you do? 🙂
At first, I think the students will want to go to school and they might be motivated to learn, but after awhile everyone will get used to the enviroment and the students will return to being unmotivated and start slacking. In the end, I think teachers and a student's will power are what contribute most to making a school good.
I say that a school needs good teachers that make kids want to go to school to learn. If kids go to school in a big building it could distract them and cause less learning.

Its probably a combination of both. Some students may be more motivated by the quality of their surroundings while other students may focus more on the value of their studies.
The most important thing is not the bulding itself,but the teachers in it.It cost almost 600 million dollars to buid this school,that only holds 4200.Plus,they had to cut 3000 teachers because of money issues.What else could have this money gone to?Soup kitchens,shelters,DONATIONS to help those in need,money to fund studies in medical advancement.That's nice that 4,200 kids get a nice school for 8 hours,but what about those living on the street their whole life?!This school has crossed the line.

A luxurious K-12 complex sure entice people and encourage them to study, but luxurious furnitures cannot replace a good teacher... the teacher is talking/teaching/creating relationship with us, not the building. Of course a great building play a part in what makes a school good; but not the biggest part.
I dont think that apperance has anything with makeing the school a good place to learn. Ya you might be more comforantble and it looks good to your community but, how the teachers teach will depend on grades. Another thing that would depend on grades is the students attidue. i think that the school is cool but ridiculous. Because they could have used most of that money to pay for a better education not depending on fanciness but a good education. I think having a school that has all the nice accommodation is unnecessary. For one learing students should be able to learn in any environmental. Yes it would be nice to learn in a luxurious school, but look at all the money that was spent on that school. The millions of dollors could be used to help school across the country that have had there budgets cut. What really makes a good school is the students. The students have the control to make what the school is.

We need to address parental education (moral values) within the home. Parents or Guardians are the first teachers who have a major impact on a childs development. Teachers, administrators, and counselors can bring the skills to education childrens, but who will educate a mentally abusive parent or guardian?
I think that the teachers, faculty, and staff has the biggest effect on how successful a school can become. Yes, the building can have an affect, though, but that is only when it is disorganized, messy, and unsafe to the children on campus. This will change the percentage completely for the information that the kids learn.

The school building is the crust that holds all the learning that go's on there. The mantle is the teachers, the solid holders of the students[ the core]. This school in California may be expensive, but it is the teachers and the students that make up a school. I hope all students in that school do not get lost!!!
The students and teachers are far more important than having a high calibur school. It's good to stay upgraded but the only thing that that school will accomplish is being a place where students want to hang out, NOT learn.

Anything aside from that such a materialistic matters, should just come in second. If you want to have a good school then spend the money to hire teachers who are worthy enough to give students an opportunity for an amazing education. A school does nothing for you if you don't have good teachers. The building itself can not help kids learn. The only purpose of school is to learn, and gain an education.

I believe that the school should be focused mainly on the teachers, and clubs/after school activitys. However, the school's appearance is also important because the students environment effects how the student (s) preform in school. For example, you are making apple pie, you cant have the apple pie without the filling (teachers,students,clubs) and you cant have the apples and not the pie (the schools appearance).

I dont think that the school building helps in students grades. The teachers help give the proper resources to the students to be successful. But ultimately it is up to the student to recieve the grades that they desire. The school building only provides an environment for the students and does not affect the students grades.

I personally think that a school that is that extravagant is a bit on the ridiculous side. When teachers are being cut left and right expecially. I know that the money is divided into different categories of how it should be spent, but I think maybe putting some of this money into the teacher salaries would benefit kids more than giving them a gorgeous school to go to. I believe that it starts with the teachers. With a good teaching staff, it makes it much easier for students to thrive and learn. Then it's the students that have to put in the work to become a good school system. I dont think its as much the school building, as long as you are in an environment that is easy to learn in, it shouldn't make much of a difference. So i think it all starts with the teaching staff.

I think what makes a good school is the academics.the only thing that matters is that you are getting the education that will carry you through life. Never let a big price school make you think it is better. You dont have to spend money just to get a education.
A good school isn't just about how expensive the school is. It is about how well the students will learn and how well the teachers are. School is to prepare you for your future. Having an awesome class room won't make you learn any faster or make you smarter. There are plenty of low financed schools, like mine, and the students are humble and smart. Even though from a student's point of view it would be incredible to have a school like that.

I think that in order to have a good school, the school must have good teachers. I don't believe that the size or the cost of a school has any impact on the education that a student receives. The education that a student receives is based on the ability that the teacher has to educate a student. The main reason for school is to get the best education possible. It's not about going to the most luxurious school. Also, I go to a small school so I know that having a small teacher to student ratio is much better for receiving one-on-one help. So, the fact that the school is so large will decrease the teacher to student ratio, which will decrease the one-on-one help a student could receive from a teacher as well.
I don;t personally think the look of the school matters.Don't get me wrong it's nice to have all the flashy things but, why not put that money toward a better curriculum?

I believe that the faculty is what makes a school good. You can be sitting in any classroom, but you won't learn a thing if the teachers aren't doing their job. Also, the students willingness to work and learn from those teachers affects the decision to call a school "good".
I think that it would be nice to go to a school that fancy. It wouldn't even feel like school and more like a hotel. But the most important this is that the teachers do their jobs well and can help the students improve. Also the students need to have a positive attitude and be able to pass their classes.

Learning is the most important reason that makes a school good. The skill to process the knowledge for a better future. Therefore, the teachers must be movtivated, and grabb the students attention. As for those that do teach, should teach all points of veiws, and try not to indocrinate students into their personal beliefs. I think there are several factors that make a school well-rounded and ideal for a great learning experience. The two primary factors should be the discipline and the overall education. Both go hand in hand. A well rounded school that prides its self on discpline and its morals and values will prepare the students for the world to come. Education is definatly important, and is essential to have teachers willing to engage the students in the day's activites and lessons. A school missing either one of those factors will be sub-par to a school demonstrating both of the previous factors.

I think that the school environment matters somewhat. My family and I travel a lot. And if you are sitting in a prehistoric cave, reading about early man, it makes a difference. As long as the environment is based on the learning instead of a cool movie theater.

I think that A school DOES matter. The teachers also count but the school is what catches the students attention. A school for most normal kids can be boring and un-interesting. Bu tif schools were larger and more interesting it would get more students stimulated during ALL classes not just the subjects they are good at, and that they enjoy. So I think the school was not a waste of money, or time. The school wil have kids more interacted and stimulated with learning

We as a class, have decided that great teachers that spark our imagination, tasty food, a clean and orderly school, reasonable rules, outstanding curriculum, active sports programs, and having fun is what makes an awesome school.

Teachers are the most important part to the best learning experiance. They help to teach and nurture students. But on the other hand having new technology and a nice enviroment helps, but only half the distance. Technology helps by making information more accessable, but Gallieo Galliei, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Edison, Maria Curie and Albert Einstein were some of the best scientists and geniuses who never had computers! They learned by teachers and other people or taught themselves using books and their genius brains. That shows that people can learn without computers, cell phones, MP3 players or anything else technologically advance. So although technology and a good enviroment aid us in our learning it is the teachers and conselors who provide us with the knowledge we need to know to make it through live and strive in college and our careers.
I feel as though the building is what matters the least in a teaching establishment. I think the money should have been spent on obtaining the greatest faculty, and teachers. Not to mention, the school costs entirely too much to attend.

I would find young teachers to teach who have a good sense of humor but can keep the student under control and teach the standards. I would not want a teacher where the kids are bored. Nice learning equipment like computers and science labs are great, but going to school in a "hotel like" building could make a lot of kids, and teachers, alike feel out of the school environment. I think the school is special because of the teachers. You could have no school, but teachers. Books can be our teachers. Parents can be our teachers. The usual teacher we think of can be a teacher. T.V. can be a teacher. Internet can be a teacher. Newspapers can be a teacher. You can't have extracurricular activities without teachers. If we never had teachers, we would have no clue what to do, what is going on around us, or anything.
I think my school will be ameliorated by the school rules and equality,because my school doesn't have a school bell and we are not allowed to use mechanical pencils. Also equality because the teachers' room has an air conditioner and they are allowed to drink coffee

Just think of how schools were ran about 200 years ago.
It matters what the school building is like. What kid want a dusty gym floor. But the teachers are the thing that mostly matters. teachers help with smarts, and guidence.so ithink that the teachers matter the most. on the other hand with me being a person who plays sports i have to keep my grades up so it is hard to play one of your favorite sports and have to keep your grades up so after school programs help two.

Apart from the students, I think its the teachers that make a school a good or bad school. Teachers that are devoted and encourage their students to ask for help tend to be the good teachers, I would've failed classes if it wasn't for teachers giving up some of their time at lunch or after school to give me the extra help.
I think that its a combonation of teachers and kids. becuase if u have fantastic kids,it make learning easier, now, there is no such thing as perfect kids but ones whom really try hard in what they do, and teachers becuase, a teacher csn show you how to do somthing, and then go on. we need good teachers whom know what the student needs how to explain it and knows how to answer questions... thats what i would love in my school...
I think what makes a school good is not the rooms or the building, but the education that your getting, nice,yet pushing teachers, good food, and feeling like your at home, however, i am not saying you should spend thousands of dollars making it feel like home to the students.

But the students do have an effect how you or they treat other people will also matter in the goodness of the school, if the students treat each other respectfuly then the schoool is better and the students might feel better about going to school, but treating each other disrecptfuly then the students wont want to go to school and there wont be a peacefull learing place.
The fact that someone would spend $578 million dollars building a school is outrageous. Good teachers are the cause of a good school. They teach kids new ways to learn and how to find new interests. It is useless to spend so much money on the school building if you dont have good teachers to back it up.
