The Moon, Mars, and Money

It's a decision that's generating a lot of disagreement among scientists and astronauts:  President Obama is canceling plans to send astronauts to the moon, while he's pushing for a new strategy that could, among other things, put a person on Mars.  He's promising NASA more money, but critics say more jobs will be lost with both the moon plan and the space shuttle program coming to an end.

What do you think the nation's priorities should be when it comes to the space program?

While I agree that the moon program is expending excess money during the recession, we have invested too much time and money in the space shuttle program to drop it. As for Mars, lets try something new!

i tink that they should try to split te money they have and give half to the
NASA program and half to the contrey

Not a good choice in my book. Why would we stop at this point in time? All the gains that we have made will be lost. One more example of how out of touch with reality our President is.
We should make the space program a very high priorty, education should be higher of course.

The priorties should involve what the astronauts really need. I think the astronauts should decide what they really need for the space program. They are the most important part of the space program anyway.

It seems every president wants to rewrite our space program and start from scratch. The moon makes perfect sense as a base where we can learn invaluable lessons for Mars, it's close to home, and it also can provide legitimately valuable research opportunities for us on Earth.

Why is it that we made it to the moon in eight years with barely any rocket technology 40 years ago, yet we can't even get back to the moon in under two decades now? As long as our heroes and inspirations continue being athletes like Tiger Woods and actors like Lindsay Lohan, I fear for the future of our children and our nation.

How long would you keep that person on mars. And giving nasa money is a good idea because nasa needs it.

I don't see any differnts and why cancle trips to the moon when mars is like 30million more miles away it will cost alot any wway and it would be cheaper to just go to the moon.

I think sending somebody to mars would be a bigger step for the astronauts and Nasa. I do, however think that the astronauts who were scheduled to go to the moon should keep their jobs, but just not go to the moon until the man we send to Mars, (if we do) comes back.

    April 15, 2010 at 8:24 pm |

I think we should keep researching things on the moon. It would help to save a lot of jobs.

Our government (including our President) should prioritize going to Mars before our moon. If we went to the moon we would look at the same discoveries we made in the 70's. No human has been to Mars, therefor we would learn more things about our solar system that we haven't ever known before.

We should get someone on the moon again before taking a bite that is to big for us to choose. Actually instead of sending people to Mars we should be focusing on giving schools paper and supplies. Lets take tackle one planet at a time please!

I think the nation priorties should be when the economy is much better then they can start the space program.

It's like our country thinks that if they don't spend big portions of money, it's going to be the end of the U.S. Although I like space, I'm not so sure if they should spend so much money.

I think that the government should care about sending a person to Mars but now is a tough time and should know that instead of using that money to send astronauts to mars they should be using that money to stimulate the economy.

The President would be wise to reconsider. Mars is several months away from the Earth. Our moon is only a few days. The moon is therefore a logical testing ground for a prototype Martian civilization. In the event that something goes wrong, NASA can more easily respond to address the issue.
Secondly, even though we have visited the moon before, we have never colonized another celestrial body before to stay for a prolonged period of time. We may make many new discoveries on the moon.
Thirdly, the costs will be enormous to go directly to Mars. Considering the fact that Congress doesn't know what a balanced budget means, the President would be wise to show some fiscal restraint.
Fourth, the moon is known to have a rare isotope of helium that may be able to supply nuclear energy for us on Earth. What does Mars have? Well, that's the big risk. The President would be wise to go for the low hanging fruit first.

I think this is the largest mistake the president has ever made. It means hundreds of jobs lost, no moon missions to silence the critics, and Americans going to space on Russian & Chinese rockets which would disgrace NASA & the nation.

  17. Anita

I think that we should send astronauts to Mars first. We haven't been there before but we've been to the moon. We should focus on what we haven't done first.

  18. George

The Moon. We can get there in a political cycle. We can show world
leadership. I am afraid that our president does not understand that for a nation to be great it must lead, not follow. Today is a sad day for this once great nation.

I think that President Obama should wait to put someone on Mars. Since people are already making plans to go into space he shouldn;t just cancel plans or stop making people go to the moon. The government should focus on more important issues in the nation. Therefore, the government should just wait to send people to Mars.

i think you should keep going to the moon cause we could maybe found out more research on it. Then maybe construct ways to go to mars and new ways to get money

    April 16, 2010 at 8:19 am |
  21. Josh

I think putting a person on Mars is a great goal, but in this time of less money, we should prioritize more important things like health care or jobs.

    April 16, 2010 at 9:17 am |
  22. Leonardo

I don't thing that right now is important to send people to the moon, I prefer they do some research to send people to mars. Some people think we've been in the moon before.

    April 16, 2010 at 9:52 am |
  23. Steven

They should be out to find more planets and new stuff in space not focusing on one thing but they should try to get men on mars to study more about the place and the planet itself if you can live on it or not.

i think that obama should not put his plan into effect. because then all that time and money the county wasted on the space station would be gone and the space station is still in good condition(i think)

  26. will

i dont think the president is doing the right thing

    April 16, 2010 at 11:03 am |

I think they should use the money for sending moon to men because someday we might not have the money to do that so do it when we actually have the time and money!

    April 16, 2010 at 11:03 am |
  28. sophia

I think that Obama is wasteing are money again...he is speading it on things that are somewhat important but giving the money to communities and jobs would be smarter.

    April 16, 2010 at 11:04 am |

i think they should send people to the moon the lunch from there

    April 16, 2010 at 11:04 am |
  30. Alexes

I think they should try to go to mars. But I think they should get super comfortable with the moon before they try to go to mars.

    April 16, 2010 at 11:04 am |
  31. Dan

I think that Obama should spend a little bit less money, every time I watch your show He is always spending billions of dollars on something, so I'd say spending the 6 billion dollars is a bad idea.

    April 16, 2010 at 11:06 am |
  32. Hank

i think they should make a new station on the moon because we can get to farther away place just a little faster and see a little farther with our larger telescopes and make afew discoveries on the way.

    April 16, 2010 at 11:06 am |
  33. Derek

i think that NASA should still keep going to the moon cause if they do go there enough they could have a base and maybe store things there to try to get to mars. so i think president Obama is making a mistake about canceling the trip to the moon.

    April 16, 2010 at 11:07 am |
  34. nic

i think it is inportant we go to the moon then we might be able to find a way to lanch a shuttle from the moon to Mars.

    April 16, 2010 at 11:08 am |
  35. Sam

i think that they should not do that because we just recently had the health care debate which lost us alot of money and i dont think we havve money for this.

    April 16, 2010 at 11:08 am |
  36. Ashley

NASA should be able to make their own decisions. Obama shouldn't be telling NASA to do whatever he wants. If they want to send another person to the moon, let them! He shouldn't have power over everything.

    April 16, 2010 at 11:09 am |
  37. dale

i dont think we should go to the moon or mars because it would cost a lot of money , they might get a hole lot of infomation but it would cost a lot of money rember and we are already in debt

    April 16, 2010 at 11:10 am |
  38. Spencer

I think Obama did the right thing by stoping the program, we are in ALOT of debt as a country. We dont need to be spending money on visiting the moon if we already know it pretty well. We could always find new discoverys on the moon as we are still doing on the earth. He did the right thing.

    April 16, 2010 at 11:12 am |
  39. Julia

I think we should not explore the moon anymore because we know a lot about it but we don't know as much about mars. Though if we lose jobs to it I think we should keep the moon plan and the space shuttle progtam. Plus I don't think spending that much money on NASA with what the economy is like right now

    April 16, 2010 at 11:15 am |
  40. Debra

I believe we should not spend all of this money on space when there are millions of people on Earth dying of curable and preventable diseases.

    April 16, 2010 at 11:16 am |
  41. Ty

we dshould just end the program

    April 16, 2010 at 11:19 am |
  42. Jennifer

There is still a bunch more things we can study on the Moon. Going to other planets will cost more money. I though we were trying to save money not giving it out like its candy!

  43. Dylan;)

    Space exploration=good more debt=bad

    April 16, 2010 at 11:52 am |
  44. Nate

If the program ends, all of the people that work there [which is a lot]
will be out of a job. Frankly I think that there are enough people without jobs right now.

    April 16, 2010 at 12:20 pm |
  45. Mitch

I don't think the space program should be a priority, we should be worrying about climate change, air pollution, and the economy.

    April 16, 2010 at 1:02 pm |
  46. Lois

I think we should learn more about what we don't know and if that means using some money then i think we can benefit from it.

    April 16, 2010 at 1:03 pm |
  47. Tommy

I dont think they should spend any money on the space program because we have problems on this planet we have to take care of first.

    April 16, 2010 at 1:03 pm |
  48. KYLE

i think its a good idea to stop it because it will save money and it would be better to put more people on the planet mars because it would be a huge leap for the NASA program. We've already been on the moon we need to focus on progressing and going to other planets.

    April 16, 2010 at 1:03 pm |
  49. alex

    Go to mars duh

    April 16, 2010 at 1:04 pm |
  50. Pat

I think we should get everything out of the moon as we can. Eventually we will get to Mars, but until then we should be spending most of our time on the war we are in and our national deficit we are. We need to stop spending money so much money.

    April 16, 2010 at 1:05 pm |
  51. Leanne

I honestly don't think we should go out into space at the moment and I don't think we should spend any money on things in space when down on Earth we have enough problems with money. We are in an economic crisis and spending money on NASA to go to space seems like a waste at the moment. Spend money on things WE need..not what space needs.

    April 16, 2010 at 1:06 pm |
  52. Dan

I think it's a bad idea because Obama is promessing more money witch he can't because he is spending to much money. And if it was going to elimanate more

    April 16, 2010 at 1:07 pm |
  53. Torii

I think that we should be using money to go up to space to take research and learn new things about something we don't learn much about.

    April 16, 2010 at 1:08 pm |
  54. Dan

I think it's a bad idea because Obama is promising more money witch he can't because he is spending to much money that Americans don't have. And if it was going to eliminate more jobs why would you do that there is already enough people that don't have jobs and can't find work. I think it's a bad idea

    April 16, 2010 at 1:09 pm |
  55. bob

I think that we should be using money to go up to space to take research on whether or not the world is going to an end in 2012

    April 16, 2010 at 1:09 pm |
  56. Anthony

I think that President Obama has a good plan to get us to mars, but we need to continue or exporations of the moon. NASA needs to stand up and say that they want to continue sending people to the moon, along with mars.

    April 16, 2010 at 2:06 pm |
  57. Ryan

I think that astronauts should be able to explore the wonders of space, therefore I think they should be able to go to space.

    April 16, 2010 at 2:32 pm |
  58. Sam

Going into space costs a lot of money and there is no use for going into space just to explore what we already know what is there.

    April 16, 2010 at 2:47 pm |
  59. Kaidlyne

I think that the space program should cintinue. The sun will not shine forever and we should try to find a way out of this problem. Our space program should continue for us to find new things that can interest us and help us.

    April 16, 2010 at 3:44 pm |
  60. Robert

I believe that since we have already been to the moon, we should continue going there so that we can collect more data about it. it would be better to know a lot about one planet rather than knowing a little bit about many planets. One day, if we do continue doing research on the moon, humans might be able to live there one day.

    April 16, 2010 at 4:32 pm |
  61. cruz

There is no wrong answer for witch not going to the moon they can study on other things such as going to mars continuing going to the moon is achieving nothing but long trips for witch going to mars could be exiting and finding more about space.

    April 16, 2010 at 4:33 pm |
  62. brittany

i d0nt think dat its a good idea to stop cuz we wont get no more ifo from the moon like we can get a lot of info bout the earths nd if thay stop we wont no wats goin on u know

    April 16, 2010 at 4:33 pm |
  63. jason

i think it is a good idea because our state might actually save some money but i also think that it would be a good idea to explore more of space because we might find something new

    April 16, 2010 at 4:34 pm |
  64. michelle

i think that they should keep on sending astronauts up to the moon because they are the one that check our moon and see what's wrong with it. the astronauts should keep on going instead of obama stopping this whole thing. i think that he is taking things to far

    April 16, 2010 at 4:37 pm |
  65. mathew

We as a country should save some money so I think that this idea is great. If we go to the moon again we won't have a trip to Mars and our debt will continue to grow. These trips to the moon have ended so we should keep it that way.

    April 16, 2010 at 4:38 pm |
  66. joey

i know that obama should not put his plan into effect. because then all that time and money the county wasted on the space station would be gone and the space station is still in good condition

    April 16, 2010 at 5:09 pm |
  67. sarah

i think that we could be doing something much more useful than going in space. we could give money to research cures for cancer and helping poor people in africa rather than getting rocks from other planets.

    April 16, 2010 at 5:17 pm |
  68. Christine*

First of all WHY cant they go explore the rest of the moon? There might be a great discovery, {but if the moon has been explored then travel a little further in the universe.} Who knows there might be life on a near-by planet.

    April 16, 2010 at 6:28 pm |
  69. Erica

I think their priorities should be not cancelling plans to sent astronauts to the moon because many jobs will be lost and so many people have already lost their jobs and its so hard to find a job right now and the moon plan and space shuttle program is a great experience for certain people. I think Obama is making a mistake by cancing the program to sent astronauts the moon.

    April 16, 2010 at 6:56 pm |
  70. Ravi

Personally, I believe that if we scrapped the moon landing, we would have more money to go to Mars. As President Obama already said, we have already been to the moon, why go there again? Some people will argue that we should go back to do more research in the modern age, but if we go to Mars, we could research living there so the world would have a place to colonize after the Earth gets too crowded. The United States is the only country to ever land on the moon. Other countries, like Russia and China, are planning to land on the moon, so let them. Mars should be our first priority.

    April 16, 2010 at 7:06 pm |
  71. Slava

I think that when the people go to space, they should take pics of stuff that are interesting. The nation should also be paying people more money.

    April 16, 2010 at 7:43 pm |
  72. Hanne

Well personally, I don't think we should even be looking outside our own atmosphere right now. It is a tough thing for me to say, because space voyage is such an amazing thing, but this country is in so much debt right now, and there are more pressing issues around the world. But conversely, jobs will lost and peoples' lives at stake. Some are hinting that the U.S. has seen the end of the recession, but money is still tight and is not something to throw around lightly.

    April 16, 2010 at 8:01 pm |

~when you were little you probally wanted to be an astronaut and when one went up you were the first to see it do you really that to end now?WHAT IS THE PRESIDENT THINKING?! we need to keep up on our reasearch about space so why now?~

    April 16, 2010 at 8:33 pm |
  74. Cain

i think yes,Obama is right because N.A.S.A is wasteing money going to the moon witch the U.S already.so They should Lets N.A.S.A got to Mars.

    April 16, 2010 at 8:41 pm |

They should use the money for more jobs and for supplies that schools need.

I think it would be cool if we went to mars. It would probably change my life and we would be the first country to go there.

    April 16, 2010 at 10:05 pm |
  77. Erik

I think we should go to mars because we have already lost a lot of jobs. Also i think it would be cool if the United States of America was the first county to land on mars.

    April 16, 2010 at 10:07 pm |
  78. Joe

I think President Obama is making a good decision. We need to expand our studies of space, because we have been to the moon and know so much about it. I think since we have been there so long people could live there. So we to discover other planets like ours instead of the moon

    April 17, 2010 at 12:15 am |
  79. Ashley

I think it would be interesting to go into space. But the cost is really high.

    April 17, 2010 at 12:39 am |
  80. Docomaly

I think Obama is right to me i just think they should go to other planets and mine for new materials so we dont have to kill the Earth

    April 17, 2010 at 1:10 am |
  81. Jasmine

I think we should worry about our planet and whats going on with it before we go and explore a new one

    April 17, 2010 at 8:57 am |
  82. Maddie

We need to start moving resources into space, and creating "living environments" for when Earth is no longer livable. Maybe we need to start spending the money on research for these new projects, and NOT traveling to the moon.

    April 17, 2010 at 11:07 am |
  83. Alfonzo

I think its a good idea to land humans mars but if we were to do that we would be loosing "thousands of jobs" which would damage the economy even more.

    April 17, 2010 at 1:53 pm |
  84. Lillie

I think it is crazy. They are worrying about making new discoveries when we should be working on nothing but the economy. It would be great to have someone walk on Mars but I still think that spending billions of dollars for being able to stand on Mars is obsurd. President Obama needs to start making changes that don't involve spending money on unimportant things.

    April 17, 2010 at 2:20 pm |
  85. Kayla

I think President Obama needs to get his priorities straight. By sending astronauts to Mars he is making the economy worse because many jobs will be lost. And we really should be focusing on learning about our own moon rather than going to Mars!

    April 17, 2010 at 2:23 pm |
  86. Helmmy

I think Obama is wrong because the astrounat wants to learn about the moon

    April 17, 2010 at 3:25 pm |

I think Obama is right Because N.A.S.A IS WASETING money going to the moon

    April 17, 2010 at 3:30 pm |

I think we should go to the moon again because it has been a white sense we saw it last.. he has some good ideas but needs more

    April 17, 2010 at 4:26 pm |
  89. Shay

we should get our economy up first then going out of this world.

    April 17, 2010 at 4:27 pm |
  90. Victoria

I think that it is too bad that President Obama is canceling the space programs. I hope they will be returning. Also, all of the people that help NASA and other space programs should be paid a lot for what they do because what they're working with is dangerous. I hope the programs get back soon. Money should also be used for more important programs as well- programs that people actually need to live, like school, grocery stores, resturants, schools, etc. Going into space is not must- it's just a nessacery unneeded thing that we are able to do.

    April 17, 2010 at 7:08 pm |
  91. mack

i think its great because we need to explore the final frontier

    April 17, 2010 at 8:12 pm |
  92. amaliah

I think that we should be spending more time focusing on the people who are losing jobs. Its not like mars and the moon is going to explode if we wait a little while longer. Just wait until everything starts falling back into place. That's all that we need is patience.

    April 17, 2010 at 8:39 pm |
  93. Anonymous

While we could discover more about the moon by continuing our studies there, making it to Mars would help us discover even more about the universe and it's creation. If we have to choose between the moon and Mars, I believe Mars would be the better choice.

    April 17, 2010 at 10:07 pm |
  94. David

I think that we should stick to the moon until we're sure that we have the equipment and technology needed...Why waste money when we don't have to

    April 18, 2010 at 12:32 am |
  95. Andy

I think Prisedent Obama should focus of getting this economy better before he thinks about sending people to other planets. I think this idea will spen a lot of money and keep us in this ression longer.

    April 18, 2010 at 9:28 am |
  96. Lindsay

I dont think we should go to mars because that means more job loss bad economy as it already is. I think we should take one small step at a time and wait until the future so the economy will get better and then we could go to mars. we could not be that ready for mars as in saftey and stuff like that

    April 18, 2010 at 10:15 am |
  97. Robby

I believe they should use the money for something else. But removing something that has been part of U.S. history for 52 years. would be wrong. Lastly i thin Obama is wrong in shutting down the N.A.S.A. space program

I think Obama is right because as soon as we get a loose interpretation of what it is really like on Mars, we will be able to go back to the moon and learn even more from it. We have to keep exploring new places.

    April 18, 2010 at 11:41 am |
  99. Grace

I think President Obama is making a wrong choice. Why spend our money and lose jobs on a problem that wasn't even there in the first place? He should just leave our space program alone and deal with the real problems that we have right now instead of creating more.

    April 18, 2010 at 12:11 pm |
  100. Chris

I believe we would be able to further our knowlege about life on mars if we could look at the planet first hand. There may be some things that the rover could not detect. Also, they probably will have to make new space suits to withstand the temperatures on mars.

    April 18, 2010 at 12:57 pm |
  101. Jacob

i believe the president is going crazy and we should first build stations on the moon that can build and repair shuttles that can then be launched when Mars is closest.

    April 18, 2010 at 12:58 pm |
  102. Katie

obama is right. we we're spending too much money trying to land on the moon, even though we already did. nobody landed on mars yet so we should try something new.

    April 18, 2010 at 2:57 pm |
  103. Priscila

I think they should stay at the moon while they can, the president should allow the lunar space walks to continue. I think if they want to go to Mars than fine they can try, but if they want the economy to get better they should allow the people to keep their jobs.

    April 18, 2010 at 3:44 pm |
  104. Kyle

I think that we should send a person to Mars to explore a new planet and find new resources or a source of water supply. It would be a major advancement for United States.

    April 18, 2010 at 5:00 pm |
  105. Chris

I think that the United States should continue to work on getting to Mars and other planets, but still work on visiting the moon. There is still so much that we have not found out about the moon and i think until we do we should keep going there.

    April 18, 2010 at 6:14 pm |
  106. Victoria

I think that since we have already been to the moon once, we should explore new territory and try to go to mars. I don't really think we should spend so much money going back to the moon when we havev already been there before! Let's try something new!

    April 18, 2010 at 6:42 pm |
  107. Natalie

In some ways I agree with Obama and in others I disagree. I do believe that since we have already been to the moon before, we don't need to go again. Instead we should be trying to reach another planet so we can research more about them. On the other hand, I think NASA knows what is right and what is wrong. If they want to go ahead and research more on the moon, they should go ahead and do it. They are the professionals. What ever we would benefit the most from we should go ahead and do.

    April 18, 2010 at 6:48 pm |
  108. Alexander

I myself, am experienced with astrology and am very intrigued with NASA. I believe that Obama's plan to skip the Moon and go straight to Mars is an ineducated statement. People have been trying to get to Mars, let alone the Moon, since it was discovered, but in order to send people there, today's astronauts need to be more experienced, by thus sending them to the Moon first and building a base, then traveling off to Mars' moon, Phobos and building a base there, and then traveling straight to the "Red Planet". I strongly disagree with President Obama's current choices with NASA. Pretty soon, if NASA does not receive the proper funding from the government, they'll be closed down, and then the Russians will beat us to Mars! If we could get to Mars through the Moon, I'm sure it would be worth it. S

I think that he is wrong because scientists have to do that for their job, and if would cancel it, they won't have anything to study,

    April 19, 2010 at 9:15 am |
  110. Appleton

The president needs to stop promising more money to NASA that can make more people lose jobs, when the unemployment job is high enough

    April 19, 2010 at 9:16 am |
  111. Kaylin

I think we should just cut the space program because we already know that there are no other earths out in space. I think it’s a horrible idea for president Obama to stop the funding to go to the moon and go to mars in stead.

    April 19, 2010 at 10:40 am |

I think a manned mars mission is exciting, but unrealistic for 2010. focusing on robotic expoloration is a better idea.

    April 19, 2010 at 11:34 am |
  113. Gina

I think an astronuat going to mars would be awesome! But, i think we need more technology and it is unrealistic for this year.

I think that it would be great to send a man to the moon. we would all know more than if we just saw a robot taking pics.

  116. cathy

i think that it would be very nice to explore mars instead of moon, since there are evidences of living things on mars, but many people would be losing their jobs.

They should keep traveling to the moon ,but if they want to try to go to Mars the can get the money but if the travel doesn't work they will lose the money that they need for travel to the moon.

I think that we should send a person to mars to check everything there and then come back to Earth and tell everyone what the person saw on mars. And to add it's unrealistic.

  126. shiraz

i think that people should go to mars and see what is going on there. if there is a problem then they should send the space program and solve the problem that happened.

    April 19, 2010 at 11:42 am |
  127. David

i think that the nation's priorities should be when it comes to the space program they should stick to robatic things, but a space trip is also exciting, but they also havent proven that there is any oxogen on mars.

    April 19, 2010 at 11:42 am |
  128. Dante

I think having astronauts on mars is a cool idea. This is also a very dangerous idea. It's like when man first landed on the moon. No one really knew what was going to happen. People could die if this trip fails. But if we don't get people on mars we wouldn't know how mars really is like.

    April 19, 2010 at 11:43 am |
  129. Cobe

I think we should send a man to mars. People make movies about astrounauts traveling to mars and breathing without the helmet on, but no man has been sent to mars let alone we haven't proven there is oxegen on mars. We should definatly send a man to mars!

    April 19, 2010 at 11:43 am |
  130. Mikayla

I think they should send a person to mars alothough if this is going to fail, ( which, in my opinion, it will) i think this is a waste of money and time. Jobs will be lost an with all the jobs already being lost, I think they should not cancell everything.

    April 19, 2010 at 11:43 am |
  131. Michelle

I agree with President Obama's idea of cancelling the plans for the trips to moon to Letting a man on Mars. We've been to the moon already so why do we need to go again? Although, going to Mars is very deadly.

    April 19, 2010 at 11:44 am |
  132. Olivia

.I think its really cool to send a person to mars, but it's very deadly because of marses tempacher. The tempacher is very high in mars manly for people.

  133. Alex

I think that Obama just did the dumbest thing of his career. we already lost like a billion jobs. this just eliminates more. keep the program just forget about the moon. there's nothing there anyway. it's boring. send people to Mars already!

    April 19, 2010 at 11:44 am |
  134. Kylie

I think when it comes to the nation's priorities with NASA, President Obama was right to cancel the plans.

    April 19, 2010 at 11:44 am |

i think that they should use the money to go to other planets. because we already went to the moon. they can learn more this way. we can observe other places and descover new things.

    April 19, 2010 at 11:45 am |
  136. Marjanna

I think astronauts should still be sent to the moon. It's important for scientists to be observing the moon, as well as Mars. But, right now we've made enough progress by sending up the Mars Rover. It doesn't seem likely that anyone will be on Mars in the next 100 years.

    April 19, 2010 at 11:45 am |

    April 19, 2010 at 11:45 am |
  138. Cloe

I think a astronaute gooing to space (Mars) would be so cool, but humans living are more important than cheeking out mars right. so why risk there life from the bad weather in Iceland. Schyools should accually pitch in by raising money for safer missions so tht they can go to mars in the bad weather.

    April 19, 2010 at 11:45 am |
  139. Annemarie

I think that NASA should use the money to go to mars or other panets
because a lot of people aready know a lot about the moon. Also, maby people want to no more about mars or other panets. If people go to mars the mite be able to find out if there is living things on mars.

I think that we shouldnt do this. mostly because if we make a whole bunch of robots then it would be taking away a bunch of jobs. and the resession that we are in that would not be a good thing. I understand the importance of space research and the possiblility of life on other planets, so we may live there if the Earth becomes full, but what we need to focus on now is the state of our economy, we should be using money to create jobs and help those in need.

    April 19, 2010 at 3:01 pm |

hey i think that obama is right because thats a total waste of money.we should waste that money on educationor saving houses or world hunger there is noo point

  151. Josh

Wow, really now? We're so focused on exploring space when we haven't even charted more than 50% of our own oceans here on Earth. Won't that be one for the books? "Hey everyone guess what, we never found that cure for cancer on the organisms from Mars... HOWEVER, 2000 years later we DID find the cure from an unknown species in the ocean right here on good ol' Earth! I'm sure all those poor kids who died at age 15 are laughing it up in their graves now..."

As of today we as a people have profited little from the vast amounts of money invested in the space program. The national debt has not been paid off since Andrew Jackson was president and by now it has increased to over 56 TRILLION dollars. We need to focus on AMERICA not space. The country is falling apart at the seams, infrastructure, economy etc.

    April 19, 2010 at 7:16 pm |

Do we really need to put people on the Moon OR Mars? To be quite honest I don't think we need to put humans anyplace they don't naturally occur. We have already polluted Earth and we have started to pollute space with our satellites and rovers and what not. I think we should just leave space alone.

    April 19, 2010 at 7:52 pm |
  156. Cindy

My opinion on this matter is that in ways, Obama is right. We don't need to land on the moon once more after we already have. But, NASA is the expert on these things, since I don't think that Obama majored in astrology. I don't think its right to land on the Moon again, but I also don't believe we should go straight to Mars. My opinion on how the U.S. should handle the problem is to hold off on expeditions till our country can get back on its feet. We shouldn't waste a bunch of money right when they announced this, because something could go wrong! The astronauts need time to train for Mars and study it. But, during the time we take, any other country could go to Mars. Honestly, I am torn between the two decisions.

    April 19, 2010 at 8:07 pm |
  157. Richie

I think President Obama should send a person to Mars, because we can discover new things about Mars that we don't know such as life on Mars.

Space exploration would be a great thing for education resources, but the big question is if is it's something that our country needs right now? Compared to other topics we're facing, Space should not be a top priority.

    April 19, 2010 at 9:20 pm |
  160. john

I think he should not send the astronauts in to space because we all ready owe 3 trillion dollars th other countries in the world who knows how much this will cost !!!!!!!

    April 19, 2010 at 9:38 pm |
  161. Danny

I think that exploring space is important. But, sadly we have barley explored are own earth. If we were to explore the earth more then we would know more about it. Also that is alot of money, I don't think its being wasted but it could be used for alot of other things.

    April 19, 2010 at 9:55 pm |

I think it is kinda of weird like josh said we havent even finished exploring the oceans or the rain forest and we are moving on to space... dont you think its a little to SOON to be going that far!?!
i mean why do we want to see whats out there when we dont even now what all is under our feet, i mean sure space gives us stuff to talk about but .... i dont think we are ready to go that far. If we dont study and abserve what we have now on earth like the rain forest then it might not be here when we need it the most. plus we dont now EVERYTHING about the moon so why move onto mars.

    April 20, 2010 at 9:26 am |
  169. Karina

I think they just want to go to Mars to have something to talk about for a month and then say nothing about it. Or them have there face in a book that will never be read. Going to space cost more than My house, Our school, Cancer treatments.
Whats the point of going if we've never seen the very bottom of the ocean or all of the rain forest !?!
If we just rush every thing to being done then will well have nothing to do in the future so why do we rush?

Obamas plan sounds good to me. We have already been to the moon it's time to expand our knowledge of other planets. If we go to mars we can then try to travel to more planets than just the moon.

  183. Rachel

Space exploration is important. We have already seen the moon, but, should test if its livable in case the earth becomes unsustanable. Also, we should explore new planets, discovering new things! Who knows whats out there in the final frontier? Probaly no one. But we can find out very easily... All we have to do is Countdown.

I think that Obama could do that but, he shouldn't. That won't do any good for the US because without us going to space that won't really help learning about space in school.

I think that they should not the stop the space program because I think they need to keep exploring what is in space. We need to know what is up there and around our planet. I say we don't need to revisit the moon three more times, we know that there wasn't , and couldn't , be life on it so we should visit Mars which actually might be able to support life on it. Also if we find we actually can make life supportable on it, ovepopulation on Earth will never be a problem until mars gets filled up.

We should stop space exploration for a while now to save money and concentrate more on jobs. The money saved will make a big difference in making new jobs available and helping the people of america. We should continue space exploration when the United States are not in trouble.

i dont think they should be sent to mars , i think its pointless, because no one probably cares, and it will be boring

I think we should focus on things that are possible with the budget now although i do like the idea of trying something new by going to mars.

I think that we shouldnt send people to mars because it is a waste of money and is not a good idea in a time of a ressesion

you know i really think that we should put the money toward education because certain kids have problems learning and to help them we should instead of space exploration help them

I do not think we should worry about spending a lot of money going to space because there is a lot of Earth yet to be explored and I think we should spend that money on our own planet we could also lose the people who choose to go to mars!!

I think that we should move on from the Moon and explore Mars. We have a whole solar system to explore so we might as well get started!

For the Moon Project we have put to much time, energy and money to stop now. But before moving on to Mars I think we should finish exploring the Earth.

i think we should go to mars after the economy is fixed up

I agree with what he is doing. We are in a recession, and can't afford to spend more money right now, and i think we should definitely push toward getting our flag on Mars. It would be a big step for our country, and human all together.

I think we need to worry about our problems here on earth instead of wasting money we could use to help our economy.

Why can't we do both. One ship goes to mars while the other goes to the moon. Is it really that hard to do so.

  208. cassidi

i think that going to mars is not a good idea cause then we would waste money and our econmy is not very good right now and because it is months away from earth so that means the longer you cant see your family and freinds sooo just go to the moon.

In my opinion although learning about other places in our solar system is very important I do not feel that we should be spending so much money on technology to get there. We are already in dept and why not keep exploring the wonders of Earth that have yet to be discovered.

i think they should do whatever they can to fix a problem if we have one but also if it is to dangerous to send people up there don't do it because that means you're putting those people in danger.

I think we should go to mars and see what it is like and go there but our econemy is not in a good situation. I think it will be good to go there and expoler different places.

I don't know much about President Obama's proposal on the subject, but I think that continuing trips into space are a good thing. We can learn more about the universe, and people will have jobs. As for going to Mars; technology is expanding at such a fast rate that we will eventually have the ability to go to Mars. Starting now wouldn't hurt.

I think that exploring things outside of our planet is an important thing to be doing. This is why, personally, I think they should keep the old programs as well as developing new ones. This way we not only make new jobs but we make more of a chance for exploration and discovery.

If we have already used so much money for the space program why would we cancel it now? Its that a huge waste?

I think we should try to go to Mars because NASA has already been to the moon and has learned a lot about it, but with mars that isn’t the case.

I think that it's a good thing that we're not spending so much money on the space program. Isn't it kind of sad when we know more about space than our own planet? I think the money we're saving on not going to the moon should be spent exploring the worlds oceans.

I dont think its that big of a deal if it is all bloddy and if it has bad word on it i honestly dont think its that bad, but if they do have a problem with it i think the parents should do something about it. But if not leave them alone

I think at this point in time we don't need to spend billions of dollars to send someone to the moon or mars right now. It would be amazing if we could put someone or something on the moon or mars for we can learn a little more about them. At this point in time though we truly don't have that kind of money. If they send someone up there right now i think it would be really dumb. But in the near future(hopefully) i think we should put someone or something on the moon or mars.

I think that America should continue to explore space. We have made so many great discoveries already, and I think by cancelling the program we will be undermining all the effort that went into previous missions. To understand more about the planet we live on and all the changes it is going through, I think it is important to learn about other planets and the universe in general.

Me, a child who loves to study science and space exploration says that Obama made a bad choice. I think that by designing a new rocket to go to the Moon could help both technology on our planet and maybe to go to Mars. Obama is rushing them to much and should wait.

I think that we should stop the moon funding and lessen the funding of mars exploration. we are still/getting out of a recession and we owe china a lot of money. lets focus on the economy/jobs/ and our debt then we should explore/go to mars.

Right now NASA isn't what we should be worrying about. Why would you even change the plans now anyways? So many people are with out jobs already so why would you give NASA even more money and have even more people with out jobs? The president obviously doesn't know what he is doing. He is supposed to be making things better for this economy and if he does this he is just going to make it even worse.

First of all, NASA should be happy that it still operates in this economy. Personally, I think going to the moon is kind of been there done that.
I mean it would be cool, but its been done before. But MARS! WOW! I would love to be the first astronaut on mars! wouldn't you?
