What You Want out of College
This Friday, you're going to hear about a community college in Michigan that's offering a money-back guarantee if you don't get a job within a year. It only applies to certain courses you'd take for the four most in-demand technical jobs in the area. But with the nation's unemployment rate at 9.7 percent, it seems like a sweet deal for some students...and a risky idea for the college!
It brings up the subject of why people attend college. Is it specifically to get a job after graduating? Is it to get a higher education, or are there other reasons?
With many of you planning to head off to college, tell us what you hope to get out of it.

i think what i want out of college is for every one to learn,have fun, and to have it be cheap notevery one can aford it right now not even people that heve jobs that pay them alot what im trying to say is take it easy save your money that you get it might help you in the futer you never know??
How would you like to be operated on by an uneducated doctor? Or be taught by a teacher who didn't go to college? It's important to go to college because you are helping your generation and future generations. We need to go to get higher educations, jobs, and to help others.
College is really important to me because I want to get new experiences and get enough training to start a job to support myself.

I think college is important because when you first get out of high school, you're on your own. You don't know what to do. College helps fill your day. I think the guarantee is forcing people to take certain classes but not necessarily the ones for your major which could become a problem for some students.
Well, college is a place where we learn about what we want to be. We study to take the tests so that the proffesors know if the students are learning it correctly. Education is one way to get some sort of job that you worked 4-8 years or more for in college/ university. I'm not saying college is the only way, but it is one way to get to a career in life.
I hope to get a good education because I see how hard my dad has to work. The recession has hit are family hard and he was laid-off of his job.

A lot people want to go to college because they wnat to getting good jobs, me too. But I don't like we need to learn other subject that we don't need them outside of school. If you ask a 35 years old dad what is Factoring Trinomials, maybe they don't know it. But some people don't know the answer, they still successful.
My plain for college is to go to USNA ( United States Naval Academy) in Maryland. But its going to give a chance to do anything I want to do. I want to be a F-18 Hornet pilot for the U.S. Navy and live up to my dream and live my life.
We can learn how to be with people in competition in good faith, what to study by ourselves with responsibility, and how to handle a certain situation with creativity . We call it "experience" and thant's what we want out of College.
College is really important to me. When I go to college, I definitely want to go to a private school, but public school is still an option. First and foremost I would need to get an education that would help me some day and that I would be interested in. im not planning on going because all college does it puts you in debt early in life then you spend a lot of years just trying to pay it off. Even if you do get scholarship you still get in "college debt".

The idea that you would get your money back if you didn’t find a job after a year, I think, is kind of dumb for lack of a better word. I think that you pay for the classes you take and the education, not a guarantee to get a job. Although I would like to get all that money after one year of not having a job, I don’t think that it’s a good idea. If the people try hard enough, and have the degree, they should be able to get a job.
When I go to college I don’t just want to go to make sure I get a job right when I get out of college I would go because I want a higher education. I also want a job when I get out of college as a lawyer and I would have to work really hard to be able to do it and I may not be able to get a job when I get right out of college so if I didn’t get a job within a year of getting out of college I wouldn’t want to get a refund of my money because I did get an education and going to college would of been worth it so there’s no real point of getting a refund when you did get an education and its not like you didn’t learn anything if you did attend all of your classes.

I think this is a great idea for the students. It might encourage them to be able to have an education. This might also back fire because it might get some students to cheat and do other reckless things. They could cheat at the fine print. They can go to job interviews but they might flunk it on purpose. This could have many different outcomes.

I don't think this is a good idea.Well a college can lose alot of money and that's not good.Not one bit.But it help some people if they don't have a job and it would help alot.

I think the money-back ides is bad. If you are going to go to college they shouldn't pay you if you don't get a job. I think people go to college to get a higher education, but also to get a job. If you have a higher education, more people (should) want to hire you. Its basically a win-win. But, if you go to college and still can't get a job then I think that's just either bad luck or you weren't very successful in school. Honestly, I'm in community college, just to kill time. The job I hope to have doesn't really require a degree, but sometimes its good to have on a resume. You don't go to college to get smart, some people naturally have that gift. Whereas others have to study hard just to 'get it'. So I'm in college to kill time, and maybe learn a thing or two. I want to learn. I attend a well-above average public school. My SAT score was 2040. I am clearly an at least okay student, yet the most I have learned in the past few years is that one can work very little and still maintain well over a 4.0.

I don't think that schools should allow this option because this may discourage kids to finish their year our because they know that their money will be given back to them. Most parents urge their children to stay in collage for 2 reasons(a) they want them to get an education (b) the paid way to much for them to drop out! But kids know they won't be letting their parents down 2 ways if they just get the money back after they don't finish.
