What Does Your School Need Most?

You've heard over and over that money is tight; funding is hard to get; school systems nationwide are trying to figure out how to make ends meet.  And you've probably got something in mind that could really help your school get through hard times.

So tell us what it is.  Could be something that helps your overall education; could be something that helps your team or your band or your test scores.  What's the most valuable thing you can think of that would make your school better?

I think that what schools need most are good teachers who are willing to commit to their jobs and successfully teach the students.

The one thing that can make my school better is unity. Without building a sturdy foundation we will fall. There will always be disagreements whether it be race, sex, religion, personal morals, but we should all still learn and grow together and put those things aside.

they don't need to judge people by if they bring the same gender the prom shouldn't be cancelled.

I think that it should not be cancaled. They could make a rule at the school were you can't bring someone as the same gender ,but they can still go alone and be able to hang out with friends. Even though they are gay they still have the right to hang out with friends!! Also if the gay kids don't like it they don't have to go to the prom.

one thing would help at least my school is toning down all all of the little punishments that make teachers stay after school if they did not do that then the school would spend less money on overtime

Our school needs about every thing! We need sports because when they play sports they have to keep their grades up so in return the grades and class averages go up. We need to have chorus and drama because it lets students get out there and be them selves. But we dont realy need all of the keyboards in our music class.

What my school needs right now is more school supplies ( pencils, paper, glue, ect.) We in California are having a tough time getting school funds so until the recession gets better we will be reading from old books and using our own pencils.

Our school is giving out 60 chocolates to each student for the student to sell them to thieir neighborhoods. I don't if any other school is doing this but I think it will definetly work because just in 3 days, I sold 17 chocolates

What schools need most is teachers that will commit to their students. In many shools teachers don't give enough effort to teach their students. That's their job and they need to work harder at it.

My band program is having a very difficult time right now. Our school is huge, but our band is very small right now. And the school is only 5 years old and our band is hurting from not only growing pains, but also a lack of funding. We're not even sure that we will have a marching band next season because it costs too much for us to continue. To make it even worse, I'll be a senior on the drumline next year and this may be my last chance to ever do this again. And I'm scared that I won't be able to do this activity that I love just one last time. We're from South Carolina and work very hard, and achieve very high levels of performance. And I would love to experience it one last time before I'm off to college!

If my school could have one thing, I beleive that our school would need our smarboards. My class uses them for almost everything we work on. Our teacher posts our morning wotk on the smart board and when we walk in we can easily see what we have to do. When somebody is having trouble with something they do up to the smart board and we help them with what to do. It makes learning new things so much more fun!!

What our school needs most is better school lunches. I (And other students) get sick of the same things, like tacos ever Tuesday. It gets annoying, and soon enough, kids start to pack their own lunches.

Many schools have begun to use different ideas to help save money because how bad our economy is, in my opinion what schools need most is to be left alone. Many schools have gone down to four-day weeks, bigger classrooms, and many other factors that can make learning harder for students. The government should stop saying, 'We can do this and save money from schools,' but begin to say something like, 'hey lets leave the schools alone and look at other things that use way too much money.' Sure taking out certain stuff from schools will save money, but it won't help students learning environment and there ability to learn. If anything trying to save money from schools will only harm us students and not benefit us.

While funding is being cut, I think the most important thing schools can do is emphasize passion. Even with all the money in the world, without enthused students who are interested in what they are learning, the school is really not effective. Our school needs inspirational teachers who can motivate students; in turn, these students will become the future leaders our country so desperately needs.

I believe over all it would help if all the teachers are qualified and properly trained! Especially the advanced classes, if your going to teach a class at about high school level you should be qualified to teach it at a high school level. I also believe sports should be a major thing that we keep up with and keep it in school because with the sport the players have to keep up their grade to stay in the game, with that the used to be failers may be passers and keeps many of them off the streets. Sports really inspires kids to do good in school and gives them what they love to do as a reward.

i think that we should cut down on the new text books, and get used ones. Every year we get new books when really it is just the same thing. These days the price can range in the $50- $100. Imagine the money schools can have if we used old ones and any info they leave out we can look it up on the internet.

Our school needs teacher that would stop giving use so mutch hand outs. Some of them give so mutch that its just a waste. About half the time we don't go bake and look at them so why bother giveing use so many. Teachers really need to learn to cut back on paper.

Our school needs more funding for things like field trips. My grade is the first grade in a long line that hasn't been able to go on several field trips. Also more jobs to pay teachers, because right now the classes are packed and crowded. Better lunches would be nice, but we need to focus on the more important things.

every school is hit hard around the whole united states.
I think schools should think of not spending money on high-tech stuff
like smart boards and other things.they can use boards and chalk boards to teach students. when the economy is right i think they can spend all they want, but if they spend a lot of money right now in this reccesion they might have problems in the future.

In my school we are recyceling paper, so that way we can reuse it and not keep waisting money! Other schools could do that too. So far, my school is doing okay with the economy......so far..... Some kids need help with a lot of things in school, maybe we could stay longer for the torturing. That way the stidents can understand it better.Kids are complaning about school lunches, maybe we could bring our own lunches to fix that problem.

The Bible clearly states that homosexuality is wrong. If God hates it, then I hate it. If a girl takes another girl on a DATE, that could lead to a homosexual life for that person. We are all God's children, and we still need to do what is right in His eyes.

I say cut be for back on lights because we can work and concentrate without as much lighting and some students can concentrate better. Also buses could be cut back like for instance; in the mornings. But the less some things are needed the less we need to spend. Donations do not seem to be working so find a new way.

I think the most valuable thing that could make our school a better place is new lockers. Students are strugling with opening and shutting lockers and being late for classes. I have problems with mine too. The lockers are also small. I believe 6th graders also just recive lockers as big as highschoolers. It will eliminate people being late for classes.

At [our school] we just found out that we might have to cut our principle or some teachers because of our school's SAT scores. I don't think it's right to have to cut our principle or our teachers because it's not really our teachers fault that we failed the SAT's but it's our fault that we didn't do so well because the teachers give us all of the info that we need but we don't pay attention in class and listen to the teachers. It defiantly is not our principles fault because he isn't the person teaching us he is the one that we know we can go to if we need to talk to him about something that is going on in our school. I think our school should keep our teachers and our principle we just need a time everyday that they help us study for the SAT's.

For my school money is really tight and because of this they had to cut fall cheering. Fall cheering is when we get the freshmen ready for winter cheering. Cheering is really important to me and its something that I was good at doing and without it I don't know what fall sport I am going to do.

    March 17, 2010 at 12:10 pm |
  62. Katelyn

Right now many schools are tight money wise. So many schools are having to cut a lot of sports. In my school they have to cut cheering. For our school homecoming is something that the cheerleaders pretty much put on. They say it's because of budget cuts but money is only used to pay the coach and that's it. We don't go to away games we have all the uniform and we pay for everything we have. Also there is a person who is willing to volunteer to be the coach. So there is no reason to cut it. Also if we get a new principle chances are the musical group will be taken away and that is really important in my mind

I think that our school needs to stick to the handbook more. Students are getting off with things they do wrong too easily which makes them not try as hard or makes them think they can do what they want. We need to enforce punishment and consequences a lot more.

more help!!!! its not that the students are dumb or anything we just need more help when it comes to certain subjects.Everyone has their weaknesses and there are ways to make them stronger! every school has problems with sat's and its not the teacher's fault or anything its the students because its up to them if they want an education or not or if they want to go college! but i know we need more help at my school!

One thing that I've seen to be a major issue from low funding is textbooks. I'm taking precalculus and our books are falling apart, most missing at four or five pages every few chapters. My school is 8 years old, our precalculus textbooks were published in 1999/2000...they're over 10 years old. Most of us can't even use them, our teacher has to print out photocopies of the books so we can learn.

Also, why not cut some of the sports related funding? I'm not saying to completely ruin a school's funding for sports but why not put it towards Math or Science? We used to have a Math Help room for after and before school were teachers and student-tutors would be, I used it a lot last year along with many other kids. What we've been told is that Teachers just don't have the time to do such things right now...could the real reason be from budget cuts?

i think they should have pay to play sports and extra curricular activities. also i think they should not be allowed to fail any classes when they do play. late buses should be taken away and let the parents become more involved in what they are doing after school. parents need to become more proactive instead of waiting for the bad things to happen first. also to all my peers.....wake up and apply yourself to your work. be a contributing student to our schools and not just dead wood. you are the one to benefit from it in the future.

my school should have something like that F List thing. Too many people don't care if they pass or fail. Or at least there should be consequences for failing like not being able to do extra curricular activities and go to dances.

It all comes down to the students and the teachers.. the reason schools need budget cuts is because of the economy. The reason our economy is doing bad is because more and more people are failing to succeed. People are failing to succeed because they don't see the reason to try...Earth to America–start trying harder! And Earth to all the teachers out there that treat students like dirt or something close to that...you are just hurting the future of America because you are discouraging students to WANT to try!

Our school needs laptops. We have computers at out school, but the computers are desktops, really dusty, and old. They are not the new desk tops, they are the old HUGE desktops, that mess up your papers, and logs off without you even doing it. So we need laptops, or atleast the new and improved desktops.

Our school does not have that many kids, but the 7th grade halls have lockers, and when the bell rings for our next class, the students are pushed into the walls and into other students. Very often there are fights or pushing going on, sinse people are rushing to their next class, and trying not to trip over the people at their lockers. So we need bigger halls.

My school hasn't really changed much but if I was in charge and the school was in a financial crisis I would have more fundraisers like car washes and cut a few things for lunch that isn't all that healthy like the nonbaked chips so its a win win.

I think my school Cresthill needs more money. I bet thats what all schools need but its true. Our school has terrible supplies to learn and that wont help with our education. If we get a bad education then we wont get good jobs and our U.S money will go down. Soon our education will be terrible and no one will be working at the good jobs giving U.S money.

Our school needs a way to make the taxes lower!! In our state, all school taxes went up on an average of 3% but our school has gone up at least 15% from what has been said!! Some people could barely afford the taxes anyway!! I surely hope that the recession ends so states fund schools and education more than the health care reformation...

I think the thing my school needs the most is Fundraisers, I think this because my school on average only has about 1-4 fundraisers each year. I think to get my school and other schools more money is to have more fundraisers like at least 5-10 each year

My school could really use a better computer network because ours (LHS) is extremely slow because they have everything all on one. So when you are trying to do work or research it takes about 10 minutes longer then it should. And for the kids that don't have a computer at home they have to use the school computers and they have to sacrifice other things to get there work done.

The most valuable thing to make a school better would be having some of the best grades in the country. This does include test scores, because if a school has really good grades, the entire school can feel accomplished. When kids feel accomplished, they want to do more and to show how good they can be. Kids need that feeling of self-accomplishment to help them get through the day.
Sometimes, a sports team or a school band can be good for the school. A sports team can make it to the championship if they work as hard as they can. With a band, there are many competitions where the kids can go out and be who they are and show that they can do it. Of course, school should always come first and kids with this extra curricular need to keep themselves at the top of their game.

I think that the most valuable thing we could get for our school is a bunch of new gym equipment. A lot of kids in our school only have one elective. So gym is like their second elective. We need to be able to provide ample gym equipment for everyone.
We also need to be able to buy new stuff if the current stuff breaks. Like if a dodge ball get lodged in the roof we need to be able to be a new one. Also if someone breaks the volleyball net we need to be able to buy a new one. I think it is really important to the kids to have ample gym equipment.

The most valuable thing I can think of that would make my school better is giving the students a way to have fun while learning. This would help them be engaged in each lesson. If a student is enjoying learning, they will want to keep learning. If they want to keep learning, their grades will improve, and not just in their extra-curricular classes.
This method will help students go above and beyond in their learning. Teachers can help students have fun while learning by playing games in class and not giving lessons out of the textbook, but verbally and enthusiastically. Copying notes, although it is effective, is not very exciting. The main goal is to make students excited about coming to school.

Something that could help students overall education I believe could be a study hall. We have lots of students failing Middle School and I think its time to do something about it. I think that the occasional tutoring is not enough. Most students failing are the ones that do not care to come to tutoring.
A study hall can give students time to get one on one tutoring before they go home every day. This could be a great opportunity for students and I do care strongly about it. I believe that every teacher cares about his or her students and that they would take a half an hour out of their day for their students. This could make our school better for the teachers and the students.

I think that we need to have more strict rules on education because my school's test scores and SAT scores are really bad. My school is on the the low performing list which is really bad. My school needs to make sure the students know what the teacher is telling them so they actually get it.

I believe better teachers that care more about the kids personally like in smaller schools. I think it's all up to the teachers and how they teach, it doesn't matter what extra dollar amount we have. I think that the school need to help out the kids more that are failing, and that don't like to work at all . maybe the teachers should help them out and then our school wouldn't be like it is and also i think that the school needs to make kids pay for some of the big sports at the school so that they aren't wasting all there money on sending the kids to different towns i think that they should have to pay for the transportation. i mean we get free rides to school but to sporting events we should have to pay.

What does my school need? Well to be honest, I think we, first, need to cut back on some things. If we were to get some money I don't think we should spend it on more sports uniforms, or band uniforms or money for extra stuff, if students want that, they can pitch money in to buy it. It's not a logical way of spending money. We need money to spend on rebuilding our school, because it's not in great condition..Of course, new uniforms and getting new flashy things are nice, but it's not a necessity to have all of that, but...if you think about it, would you rather have new sports uniforms or a nice school? Our school needs more space.

I think my school needs better discipline for not having their homework and just being rude to the teachers. Also people are cussing way to much. I know that you can't really do anything about that, but we can have more discipline so when a teacher hears it they can immedetly take action. Hopefully the kids will learn their lesson and stop all of it.

Our school is suffering as well with these economic troubles.
Classes that arent required for the standards have been cut along with the possiabilty of sports. Although these extra activities dont seem vital to our education they are just as importan to us socially and mentally. We need every class, and we should have every oppertunity to broaden our minds. if our own schools hold us back our future as a society is doomed. Somehow third world countries are capable of having strict classes with no questions of cutting the classes. What needs to be cut instead is the luxarys and and uneccistys of our community and country. Although it is a nice thing funding other countries to help them out, but we need to worry about our country 1st, and our people need an education no matter how it gets done.

Our school was recently put on a list that consists of the ten schools that did poorly on the SATs. I think it's because most of our students don't want to go to college or don't see the importance of doing well on the SATs. In order to improve our school, I think we need SAT preparation workshops or to have people come in to talk about it.

Our school was just placed on the lower percentage of SAT scores so we're now going through a number of changes. Our principal may be fired and programs our school has had for years may be cut. We might also lose some teachers who have worked here since our school was built. Right now, I think, our school needs these teachers and our principal that have been with us for so long. Although our test grades are lower, I feel that we have done a lot of good things together as a school and shouldn't be punished because we had lower grades on one single test (the SAT's) in two areas of schooling (math and english).

I think our school needs more funding for music programs. So many kids here are into music and it's hard for all of us to do certain programs because there isn't enough funding for instruments and music.

My school needs dedicated students, and different ways of learning. The ways that we are taut in are school in some subjects are boring and not hands-on enough. A lot of my classmates don't care at all about school and it is bringing our schools test scores down.

Everyone thinks their school needs money the most, but what and where the money goes to is the most important factor. I would put the money given to our school into educational funds and purposes to improve school grades and have actions take place within the school to help motivate kids. I would also use the money to improve the school quality and make it healthier. I would under construction to places within the school that need it in make the school healthier by getting better food for lunches.

We would like laptops, better food in the cafeteria, be allowed to chew gum, more language class choices, more field trips, and access to ESPN, Facebook, Youtube and other blocked websites. We are lucky that these little complaints are the only ones we have in an economy like this!

I think that my school could benefit from having new teachers. We have a lot of great teachers that are aways here for us, but we also have some teachers that are really pretty bad and just over protected in there contract. So that makes it tuff to really get rid of the teachers that we don't need so much.

What my school needs most of all is more funding. Our school is old and recently an initiative was passed to remodel it, but we're going to need quite a bit of money to do so. We've also had some trouble with our test scores and the state is pushing us to do something about it. With more money, we could have our teachers go to workshops or do other things to help improve our education. If our school is renovated and our scores improve, I feel like a lot of the students and community will feel more proud of our school and going there.

My School needs more Democratic voters to vote in more Democratic lawmakers who by and large share the American value of America's brightest future in Public Education and Higher Education.

The Republican lawmakers have routinely gutted Public School funding, and Higher Education college grants. The Republican lawmakers feel it is better and cheaper to offshore their need for college graduates and to force American taxpayers to pay 75,000 dollars per year per homeless teen that finds themselves in America's massive prison system.

I think my school most needs is enough classrooms so that kids to not have to be taught in a storage room.My school was so caught up on looking the best that it never got finished its not safe and we dont have enough room for the students to learn. My sister had to be put in a storage room as her new classroom we had to fight with the school just to get her a seat in the classroom i think my school needs to focuse on the student and what were bieng taught and were instead of how they look.

A big problem in our school is the lack of spirit. Our school is not as wealthy as the others in our class and people are always saying you wont get anywhere because your from this school. I think we need to get our teachers more concerned about the students attitudes and raise our standards so others see us that way, and then eventually we can see ourselves that way

I don't think that money is what our school needs the most. What we need is for students to work hard and want to succeed. There are many people that don't even try during school. It is important to do your best and to learn each and every day. Since our school was put on a list of 10 schools that didn't do so well with the SATs, I think that students need to work harder so that they can do better in school. Students should try to do their best on their SATs and not just blow them off like some students do. They are an important matter, and people should pay more attention to preparing for them.

Well, our school was recently put on a list of ten schools that did poorly on the SATs. Teachers may be fired, and same with our principle, I believe that right now we need to keep these teachers and our principle, and that firing them wouldn't make anything better, because the reason we were put on that list was because of one test grade (the SAT's) and that is only based on two subjects (math and reading).

I think that our school needs to be able to have more money put into our drama programs because most of our money is put into sporting events, but the statistics of someone excelling in sports is lower than that of someone becoming an actor or singer. If more money was put into our drama club, I think more kids would have a chance at success.

If our school really needs something, it should be lower prices on lunch! It may be more money for the school, but it's less money for the students, and their parents. Some students don't eat lunch because their parents can't pay $15-20 a week, due to the job losses.

My school needs to crack down on some of the drugies. There are too many kids and teenagers at my school doing drugs and drinking. Several teachers have caught people doing stuff in between classes.

i think that most schools in the southern or eastern area's are in need of air conditioning. if days get to hot theres no possibility of any students going into school to sweat and worry about the possibility of passing out or something along the lines of that.

I think that what my school needs most is a better attitude towards our educations. Our school is filled with apathy. Many students do not care about grades, and I think some teachers allow this to happen. The teachers don't fail enough kids even if they are not doing their work.

I think schools need to cut back on homework. I don't mean get rid of it entirely, but we need to cut back on it. I am in 9th grade and I go to a school where homework is given pretty much everyday; especially on A days because I have English, Algebra, Science, and Geography on that day. I get a lot of homework in Algebra and Science and English. I get frustrated because my homework takes all day to do and sometimes I don't get a subject done. I also have world civilizations on B days and I get homework in that class. If we cut back on homework, we would be able to pay attention in our classes the next day because we don't have to do homework until 11:30 at night. We would also reduce the usage of ink caterages for the printers and having to buy boxes of paper. We would be able to save money if we don't have so much homework. And if we don't have a lot of homework, we can do things that would also help us and other people like doing service and we'll be more happy.

They could keep Wednesdays half days and also have the more tasty lunches more expensive or have less home work because they really only need five minutes of home work for memory and such they don't need to learn division at home or spelling since it is all done in the class room.

I think our school needs to let loose and let people wear what they want. I am so tired of people getting dress code for wearing a tang top I mean if its a hot day who wouldt wear a tangtop!!!!! Also i think we should be able to chew gum some gum...are good for your teeth!!!!!! Thats all i gotta say..BYEEEE!!!

I think that my school needs to observe the teachers and take out the ones that don't have good methods, also to make more of an effort to motivate students with more fun projects.

I think we need more peppy teachers. Its not that kids dont want to do the work, its that they aren't motivated to do the work. If the teachers were happier, then we would be more up to do what we are told.

Students have many ways to fund raise and lots of schools already do them. Schools need to step back and see how their school runs and need to see what the school least uses and take that out. You can't just generalize all schools because all schools are different.

Healthier lunches, not prison food! And they wonder why the obesity rate is so high....
We need teachers who AREN'T losing their minds.......before we lose ours.
And the PE program at our school stinks! All we do is run around or play four square or basketball. Does nothing to help people who aren't that fit or healthy or who don't get to do many sports...like me. They should have an active program. I suggest martial arts or yoga instead of making us to the same things every day.

What our school really needs the most is to replace the old grumpy teachers with new teachers who understand us better and know how to explain it better. But if they do the negative side is that the old teachers have actual expierence unlike the new teachers.

My school needs something that money can't buy. We need enthusiasm. I think that the separation of our peers into different categories ("jock", "nerd", etc.) would dissolve if only we had more spirit. If we aren't bound by always trying to look and act "cool", then what do we have to lose by getting excited at pep rallies or having energy in class?

If it were possible to rechieve money for my deep in dept school, I would try. But our budget is so low that the Board gave up on our middle school and they are making our elementry school extremely nice. I find this very unfair, considering we are waisting money on painting lines in the parking lot. Our water isn't even filtered (I don't think) and when you put it in a cup, it is a grey colliod. At least our teachers can thrive in this enviroment, because I can't wait to get out of here.

My school district is cutting the following programs: sports, music, clubs, art, band, and our education time. Our school will go from 9:00 to 3:00. Our superintendent is trying to cut obesity. But cutting these programs he's only making it worse. Our only excercise's will be pe and after school at home. Our state...owes our district 482,200$. Now we aren't the only school having to do this. Throughout [our state] schools are being cut. The healthcare bill that recently passed is going to make it even harder to have our education the way it is. Or was. 🙁 Now, we're going to have a hard time learning things. Our superintendent has kindergarden and, 1st grade at one school, 2nd grade and 3rd grade at another, and so on. Everybody voted against it and he did it anyway...We need help! We are one of the United State schools that are in trouble. Please help us!

What my school needs is a larger building, larger classrooms, new textbooks (newest editions in the school are from 2002,) and more students (the entire school, grades K-8, contains only *65 students*.) My school also needs to teach a few things. One thing, which I agree with Annabel, is enthusiasm and no separation of kids with a status of "cool to nerd". My school also needs to teach loyalty to friends and respect to adults, teachers, fellow students, etc. My school is small and it greatly needs to be changed!!! 🙁

Our school mainly needs more space and more teachers. Many different classes are being taught by the same teachers, they need people who have actually studied the subject to teach them. The space is also a problem because there cannot be more electives offered because of the scarcity of space.

Schools should try to sell their old text books online. There are some other (home)schools that need and don't have those text books because they are short on money.
They could also increase spectator prices of extracurricular gatherings like Athletic Games and Band/Dance Contests.
Schools can host events that will attract a lot of people and set a price on entry tickets baste on the supply and demand idea – have them pre-order w/o paying yet, and tell them to bring at least $xx.xx because price will be announced when they get to door.
My HS band just had their 2nd annual Plant Sale. Last year it wasn't that popular, but this year it was HUGE because of the publicity that went out because of it. We have gained at least (approximately) $1000 in 11hours.

My school has over 1000 students so some of the students have to go to other shcools now. My grade seems to be out of pencils, pens, and other school supplies all the time.

I think our school needs better computers. They can be used for more complex things like for math you can make animated diagrams. What my school need most is the room to learn more less trailers. I wouldn’t have to have gum on my shoe if I didn’t have to go walk out to the trailers. Our school could due with some handi-cap things to help people out. They should spend more money on new textbooks and paper rather than spending on new doors. Updating computers so they won’t crash when we are doing our projects at school is a necessity at our school. Maybe getting better school lunches that are healthier and maybe tastes better, these are just some of my opinions on what my school might need.

if they had better teachers i think that they would have higher grades then they do now. i also think that if some teachers weren't so strict more students would cooperate.

I think the school can get better books because the books we use are from 2001. They could also save money by fining kids for their cell phones getting taken up.
