Selfless Sacrifice
...a pretty accurate way to describe a California woman's decision to give up her job so that one of her coworkers could stay employed.
If you have a cool story of something that someone has sacrificed to get through this recession, we'd love to hear about it!

Elroy has done so much for our community. He picks up our community and raises money for our school so we can have things for band or field trips. Elroy is what makes our town run and is a friend with every one!
Kristy gave up her job to help a sick family member during the recession. Although the family member passed away; the couragous woman did a good deed.
I dont really have a story, but my mom's friend got fired, but then got rehired!
When I was about 7 years old, we went to a birthday party and had a pinata. When we broke it, I got the most candy and I saw that some of the little kids didn't get any candy. So I gave all of my candy to them. I knew that I wanted them too, but I also knew that they would enjoy the candy more than i would.
If my family was secure in our home and if i was financially stable, i would have gave my job up to someone in need because sometimes you need to look at things from someone less fortunates point of view. Because there are alot of people in our society struggling that could really use a job. So i respect anyone who may be selfless during rough times in society!

If my family was secure in our home and if i was financially stable, i would have gave my job up to someone in need because sometimes you need to look at things from someone less fortunate point of view. i think its kinda not cool the way she just gave up her job like that i hope she reconsider doing that with the economy going under
When the recession hit my town my grandfather lost his job. So my aunt used her time and worked extra hours to help him out.

I myself havent had to give something away like a job but all the american people have had to give up so much it is sad
she was being nice and she wont have any karma.
Her decision has a good side and a bad side. For instance: I think it's good to see if you could cope without a job, but if you have a job at the moment you should keep it. Jobs are very hard to find right now, so even if you DO have a job, you should at least think what you would do if you didi'nt.
I think that, that was really nice of her and to tell you the truth i dont know if i would!
That is a very nice thing to do....but I don't know of anyone that has ever done or thought about doing anything like that.
i think that it was pretty cool that she gave up her job so that someone else could have there job. The was the most selfless thing that i have ever seen.

I apperently do not have a cool story but I think people give up something that they have or own is because they want to feel generous and be kind to others. But if it is their job, they just might of got tired of it or just wanted to be a fine person.
Well there was this one time where we were voting to be the highest rank in something and it was a tie. I let the other runner-up win instead of letting myself win
if she didn`t want the job then she did what she had to but why does everyone make a big deal about it
I have noticed that my family doesn't go out as much as we used to. When we go to the store, we only get what we need. Not some of the extra stuff we used to get.
I think it was a great thing for someone to do because it was generous and it gave someone a better life! 🙂 🙂 🙂

I think that it was great, and that she is like a real hero. Maybe she had enough money, and sacrificed her job for somebody that really would need it.
A lot of people that I know gave up going out to eat & going to the movies. Just a lot of stuff like that.

I couldn't imagen myself doing such thing, but this woman has done an outstanding thing in her life. To do such thing someone would have to have courage to let down her job for co-worker.
I think that the women who had gave up her job for some one else. she must have been very brave to do that. As i think she must be a very coraguse human bean.
i think it was ice of her to give up her job. if she felt that it was her duty to do that then let her do it. i wouldn't have personally done that. i understand that she could cope better than most, but she might need that money. life is hard living on a little bit of cash so i hope she can cope with that. :/ there are probably alot of people thankful that she did that..
That was very generous for that lady to give up her job just so someone else could take her place. Not many people are like that today...I guess they just don't make them like that anymore.
First of all it is not us but the goverment should be making sacrifices. But for the people that are making sacrifices should be proud that they are doing their best to get through these tough times.
I know that a lot of people give up their (lives) to sacrifice something that they cherish.
Our school is talking about going from 4 classes a day to 7. I dont like this at all because it means less time in class,more homework and less electives...
There is a kid at my school that has problems and there is a game that has a sertant amount of peopl and he could not play so I gave up my spot.
I havent sacrificed alot, but for a woman to give up her job for someone else I.... think that is just incledible
some peopleare selfless like that. we need more people like that in the world.
I thunk i would not give up my job so that some one else can keep their because it would be hard to find another job in this economy.

my aunt lost her job so my uncle worked twice as hardto support for his family.
When people do stuff like that, then you know that there are people out there who are willing to make sacrifices to help.

If I was in that situation, i honestly don't believe that I would be able to do what she did. In that situation I probably would have kept my job because it would be so hard to find another one.
if it were me i wouldn't give up my job for anyone because i wasn't the one who got laid off the job. i would just keep it and wait until i get laid off the job.
I would "take that bullet" for my coworkers and just find another job because "all for one and one for all".
i don't know if i know anyone that has done this, but i know i would do the same thing if i anybody that worked with me were to be about to lose their job because of the economy
I haven't heard of anything like that where I am, but I think that all these men and women sacrificing their jobs for others are [basically] heroes. I know a lot of people who need to keep their jobs who are on the firing list. Many need their jobs because they are a single parent or because one of the spouses work and the other stays home to watch kids. Also, others are working hours late to just barely get by.
i have had to give up my time at the mall to save gas money.
i think that she did something really nice for somebody else and that more people should be like that.
I have to spend less time spending money on things i want and save money to get things i need to get foward in life.
Ithink that was insanely brave of her. She must have alot of faith to give up her job to co-workers. I just hope her husband ( if she has one) can support her.
As a family, my parents and I gave up junk food to help in the recession.
In this economy many people could use some help. I joined a local boy scout troop and we have gone to nursing homes, picked up litter at parks, and even earned money to donate to charities. Even little things like these can do great things.
well .... this woman did something that's very impressive. if that's me i would probably never ever done that this way. if she actually do, that persom who got her job would probably see her as their life saver and a hero afterward... my friend had done a similar thing, she donated her favorit new MP3 player to those poor homeless kids at christmas last year..
I've learned to spend my money on charitable things. I would like to help the world get better. People like the woman who gave up her job for her employee really inspired me. She will always be a hero to me. Someday I hope I can do something as good as she did.
iWhat she did was a selfless act of kindness. Things like this show how kind some people are, and i think she will make a great role modle for kids everywhere.
my school had a fundraiser for the people of Haiti and we raised over $1,000 in just 3 days and i had donated what i had which was only a few bucks to buy a gatorade but you know what that few dollars could have bought many bottles of water for them.....you know what? no matter what you contribute it always helps:}
What that woman did was price less.That she would give up her job for someone else.Most likely none of us would do that for someone else.I wouldn't have done that times are tough and some of us need our jobs.

my teacher keeps saying how people are in tough times right now, and so is our school, which makes paper low. to me though, it doesn't look too much like a shortage.
I think one of the most important things people have given is their time. From coaches to tutors at school, a lot of people have continued to volunteer in positions of responsibilty that don't earn them money. In this economy, that's a big deal.
That proves she's devoted to her own country and assuming we got to carry on with our economy
I have not given up any thing yet but that dosent meen i wont in a flas i bet my perants could lose their house and i would be lined up n a soap cichen with thousands of other peopel I think obama needs to star to lower taxes and wory about the littel guy for once
I think that that womans sacrifice was truly one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. With the economy failing giving up your job so a co-worker can keep their's is selfless. I belive that what she did for those 11 people is an incredible feat of bravery and freindship.
This is a very good story. I might be able to give up my job for a family member or something but not any of my co-workers. My job is very important to me and I definetly like the money so it would be very hard for me to give it up.
Its really sad when our economy has gotten so bad that a citizen has to make that kind of a sacrifice! We need to do something now before we cant afford anything. That woman shouldn't of had to give up her job but she did and that shows alot of character!
I think the girl from California did a very nice thing. I don't think I would have done that though. Because I need a job just like her employee did. It's like a fend for yourself kind of thing. Now what is she going to do when she cant find another job?
That woman's sacrifice was very selfless. I think it's good that some people are still putting others before themselves in the midst of a failing economy. Those people are uniting our country instead of pulling it apart. The woman who gave up her job made a very brave decision, giving up her income so that someone else could have it. We all need to be more like her.
i believe most people are out for their own and will never do such a thing even provided the opportunity, i would love to do something that big for someone some day. i have no stories about selfless sacrifise because they are far and few between, sorry : (. That was really nice of her and its sad that it had to come down to that and there could be no mediation or compromises.
I think that many people have given up a lot. I have gave a few thinks up but nothing major. Just stuff that is simple that a lot of kids go with out. I use to go out a lot but i have given that up, now i go out about once a month or so. I use to drive my truck a lot more than what i do now, i try to watch my mileage and how much money i spend on gas. I know that a lot of people have given up a lot more and i have a lot to be thankful for but, i have tried to change my lifestyle some with the recession hitting.
selfless sacrifice is something that you give up. like the one girl in california.she gave her job up for someone to stay employed. that is what selfless sacrifice is. that was kind of her to do that but if it was me i would probaly keep my job
I really could not say that I have done something that selfless, but I look up to anyone who would do something like that. I know that it would be hard for me to make that decision, not because I am selfish, but just because I don't know if I could risk my job, or even life for a stranger. I know that I would do all that I could for them but it would be a very difficult decison. Today, there are not a lot of selfless people, but I know they are out there and I have alot of respect for those select few. I hope that one day I can learn to be that selfless as to sacrifice something that I've worked hard for.
why would a lady give up her job just so another could have there job they might lose there job in a month or so. cuase obama his sitmulis things has not worked cause some may like it and some may not know but most think it is stupid.
This happened a few years ago, but it is something I will always remember. My family by no means has money; however we did have 2 vehicles, 1 of which did not run that well. Well it was the dead middle of winter and my mom and dad saw a couple pushing a baby in the cold and wind due to the fact they had no means of transportation, which is a necessity where we live. My parent’s hearts must have really went out to the young family because they went and jumped the car and drove over to the couples house and gave them the car. The couple was so thankful and it was a really warm thought to know that we helped them in that big of way.
Obama need to lower taxes! Some people can't afford houses because of to high of tax pay! Well i was at school last year and i gave up my game so some else could play!
That woman was a true hero. She did it for somebody who really needs it. There should be an award for her. The niceness award would get given to her.
I hope that it all works out. I hope she can get antoher job, and I can hope that someone can find a job.

i dont think that i would give up my job for a coworker because just of the things that i would lose like all the benefits and not being able to feed my family or pay bills then what would we do and with the economy like it is it would be hard to find another job.
I had to sell my car and I now take the bus every day to work. I hope the recession subsides soon.
My Dad has worked his job in the Air National Guard past his vacations and when he is sick to try and keep us afloat and our country safe. But it has really taken a toll on our family and his health this recession needs to end so i can see my father again
Definitely a huge sacrifice. My dad always donates large sums of money to charities, and not just sense the recession. However, he CHOOSES the charities he donates too, that way he can decide what is done with his money.
I have given up going to see my family... but instead i stay to help out around my community. when someone in my neighborhood needs help, im allways ready to take charge.
The woman was very kind to give her job for someone else. I really hope she has the extra money to support herself. Maybe the recession has not hit her as hard and she is giving what she has. I hope all Americans can pull through these hard times.
my dad just got a HUGE cut in sallary. We have given up most of the things my sister and i enjoy doing, just so we can stay in our home and keep food on the table. Also i want to keep my two dogs, Max and Nala.

i think that she did a very courages think to give up her job in this economy.
this was dumb because she was trained into her job already now they have to train a new person into her possition, if everyone did this then we all would haveto be trained in on a new job and all of us would have to pause and wait for the new person to be done, it was stupid
i agree with this because i think that is really cool and thoughtful of someone to give up there job for one of there other workers and i know i would have done the same thing, and it also shows that this person isn't selfish and thinks about other people which is a good thing and good friendship.

I think that she probably had the support of her family and she felt comfortable giving her job to someone that maybe didn't have that freedom. I hope we will see more people do things like this in the future so that they can help others support their families. This really shows how people really do care about other people.

I have to give a lot that my momma would usually give to me and now that the economy is really bad are family has to struggle for 20 dollars and we still manage to help our community.
My realatively wealthy neighbor just got into a small college that had a limited capacity of students and gave her spot to an unpriveledged young man after overhearing his conversation outside of a fast-food restaurant.
My neighbor lost his job a few months ago and had no money to pay for his sick dog. My parents, along with other neighbors, gave him a total of $200 to help out.
Well i think that if we all sacrificed something just for one person we could make a very big difference. Also i know if i was in that ladys situation i would do the same thing. That lady has a very kind heart. <3

Quite honestly, I personally believe that this person in reality had no desire to "sacrifice" her job to save another's, but to draw attention to herself. I see this publicity stunt as a way for people to easily make it on television. In my point of view, these actions are far from selfless.
Hey my family has had to give up alot. My mom has no job and has 5 kids. My baby sister has a disease that is extremely rare... We go every day without things that other children have. My mom and her faith is what keeps me going!!
I' would deffinatley give my job up to save someone elses. It's a tough recession were going through right now but' it's affecting some much worse than others.
I think it was very generous of her to do that.
Sometimes infront of our school,some people sell little animal like chicks or a quail.When I looked at some quail,they were poorly treated.So I used my pocket money to buy four of them.Three died but one survived and I freed him in a mountain. By this,I believe that I saved one life in this planet.

At my dads work some of the workers close to retirement age offered up their jobs so that the younger workers with families could keep their jobs.
That proves that she really loves the country and her co-workers that have lost their jobs. I really think that she is so brave to do that.

That women is very inspiring. In this ecomony everyone needs a job. Giving up yours for somebody else is an amazing sacrifice. Even though she wasn't getting laid off she quit so those people could stay, and that is an amazing act of kindness.
I think it's saddening to see all those students protest. Lots of students need to work multiple jobs to have enough money to pay rents and stay in school.
I believe this was a very heroic action! For someone now a days to do something like that is big! Also it has probably saved someone from going on the streets and in debt or anything worse! Normally people don't do things like that because most people just think all for one, but this women went one for all by generously sacraficing her job for someone else!
My frined gave up texting so that she and her parents would beable to call people esier to reache them any whay. Pluse most people don't have texting because it's expenceve as well.
I haven't given up anything but its sad to hear all the other stories of people losing their jobs. But all i want to do is help but how am i suppose do anything I'm just a kid i can't fix the economy but even though I'm a kid and i can't help much i don't see anyone else doing anything but protesting and yelling at people for what i really don't get it seriously! One thing other grades at my school have been doing for a while is that the seventh and eighth grade band goes to Cedar Point, now were not going to. I think the woman did a great thing and I hope she can get another job.
I myself havent given anything up yet, but I'm sure I will have to in the future with how the recession is going. People around me have had to give up their houses because they have been laid off and cant pay off their house bill. Many other people have had to give up really expensive things lying around their house just so they can get a little extra cash. Why should we even have to be going through this? Shouldn't Obama & the government be worrying about how their bills, which are going to cost the tax payers a fortune, are going to effect us in the long run? The way it looks to be going we may all be healthy and a little more dumb then the people older then us. Arent the youth supposed to be the future lawyers, doctors, teachers, etc?
My family and I give food and money to charities for those in need, so they can have a nice meal and maybe a warm place to sleep. We don't have alot to give but every little bit helps.

But shoulden't Presidant Obama and the government be taking care of all that kind of stuff? I mean people are living in the streets! My mom lost her job to the recession and we're having a tough time trying to find a new one for her.

Before the reccesion we use to go out everyday to eat and spent on careless things but now we cut back and we are waiting for things to get better.

My parents have sacrafied many cool things that we could have so I can play travel softball, and so my brither can play travel football. If we didnt play expensive sports, plus hotels, we might have more stuff, and a less chaotic life. We dont go out to eat much, and when we do it is not somewhere expensive like Carrabas or something.
I have to sacrifise all my toys and games so that we can have food and try to get health insurence. Thanks alot president. And now my mom works two jobs.Now im trying to get a job to help but im too young.

I haven't given up my job, seeing how I am not old enough to have one. But trust me when I say that if I did, I would give it up so someone else could be alright. I would find a new job, eventually. Even though we keep saying there are little jobs out there, that is a lie. There are jobs out there that we just have to put our minds together to find.

My dad works over time and on weekends so that we can have a roof over are heads he also gives up his work launches so we can buy the school launches he sacrifices alot for us and are family.
I think doing this is a very kind thing to do. Today in this economy with such unemployed people it was very generous for this lady to give up her job for someone else.
That was a very nice sacrifice of that California woman, but I wonder what she has to do now since it is very hard to get a job. It was an act of Kindness but I think she should have also thought about whats good for herself.

Why would someone not want to give there job to someone who actually needs it. I think that this couragous act is what everyone should try to do. What really would get me excited would be someone like a manager or even a CEO would do it.

I don't know of anyone who has given up their job for someone else, but i know of a bunch of people who have given up their job because they did not think people could afford to buy their products...
Thats a real nice thing to do, but my sister did something simular to that...she gave money to someone in need that needed money for gas (atleast we think so)..but how can you know that someone really needs something? What if they take avenage of what they get?

Honestly, that took alot to give up her job, so that someone else that needed it more then her, maybe because they got cut or something else. But Alot of people should look at this, beacause it takes alot of power and niceness to give a job up. But if your a billoionare then again you may need to give up your job, beacause someone else needs that job, to maybe pervide for their family. Sometimes we just need to look in front of us, to see what were fortunate for.
I think that people have to give stuff alot but giving up a job is crazy. If you lose your job then people can help you, but if you give up your job then you may not find the help you need.

i did something like that before. I gave up my riding my bike so my friend could ride her bike to her friends house.
There is a boy at my church that is homeschooled and he litearly spends all of his time helping others. He wakes up at 3 A.M. every morning and starts school and he is done by 11 A.M.then he gets ready and goes to the homeless shelter. Sometimes he picks up trash or volunteers at the animal shelter.
In our small town more people have benn trying to sell there stuff or give it to the pawn shop. I thimk they are doing this because more people are trying to spend money on stuff they need like food and shelter
That was a great Sacrifice the women made and it should not go unnoticed without anyone trying to offer her a new job. That selfish sacrifice should show the government they need to open more jobs so people would not have to pay a big price and give up there job to help a good friend
Giving up something as important as a job for a coworker takes a lot of guts. I've never done anything like that on my own but I've always had help from my church youth group. We volunteer all the time and do fundraisers for our church. This summer we are going to Montana to help out at a Native American Reservation.

When my family has alot of stuff we dont need such as beds, clothes, stuffed animals, and canned food. We give it to the house of hope so that they have stuff when they have no money.
i conserve energy by turnig off lights,and don't leve water runinng and the light on when i leve the house and i recycle paper and other things. i try to help others recycle and conserve things too

I mean, it depends on what job you have. If you work at burger king than who cares, but if you work for a high paying job than i wouldnt give that up. i dont know how this person is going to pay the bills if they dont have a job. I mean good luck finding a job in the recession the we're in. If i had a high paying job, lots of bills, kids, and i pay taxes, i wouldnt be able to afford to give up a job. Especially if you are a middle class worker.

I think that is great that some one would make a sacrafice like that in order for some one else to be able to go to work. I would hope that I would be able to do something like that; however, I think that it might be hard if I am able to work in a high paying job. I think that I would think carefully about what I chose to so that I could make a good choice. I think that I would be able to give up a hobby or something that entertains me to help – but I know I would have to think about it first.
This woman did a very generous thing. Its nice to see this kinf of people are still in this world...
My friend gave up her dog because it was costing money against her family. She had to get pet food, dog toys, vet checkups, toys, care but her family just couldnt afford it at the time. i think this is a sacrifice. She had her dog for more than 3 years.
I think that was a very matture thing to do.Not many poeple are that polite to sacrfice there only support.It takes a true well raised person to do such a thing.
For the woman to give up her job is very nice, but what will happen to her? She intentionally gave up her job. Does she have another one lined up or something? This could be a very stupid decision on her part.
It is great that someone would do that but i dont know anyone who did somrthing like that.
I dont think it really matters which color steps. It should be about the love of the sport. Just to get out there and steps sould be for fun, not to tell someone they cant because of there color.
I think everyone has had to give somethinmg up, even if they dont realize it. They may give up something as small as a daily coffee run, or something as large as a job. Everyone was hit by this recission. As for the california woman, i think people are making abig fuss over nothing. Its her life and she can live it as she wants WITHOUT the media all over her.
To sacrafice ones job for another person in that kind of situation could be considered as a heroic thing to do. That womans sacrafice has had a huge impact on what other may think about the people who are and aren't loosing their jobs. But still. She doesn't deserve the kind of attention she is getting from the tabloids. It was her decision, and it was a nice one.
My friend and i decided if we both got to finals in a dance comp. that we would work as a team sorta like if one of us got second and one got first and we thought it should be switched then one of us would drop out that's sorta what happened.
The women who gave up her job thats was a real nice thing to do. To do that so someone else could work to feed there familys good thing to do 🙂 And thats she did it of her will.

I think that what she did was couragous. How many people do you know that would give up thier job in this economy?
One of the most precious things in the world to do for someone or a large mass of people is "Selfless Sacrifice". I really pray that Iam able to do great things for others, without seeking anything in return. What that lady did for another person to be employeed; shows just how great of a genuine soul that she is. I sincerily want to pattern my actions after people like her!
Helping others is one of the most important qualities in which a person should develop. Reading stories like this: Makes me push more towards doing good deeds for others as much as possible I'd like to do great things for others constantly. And besides, for all of the good actions in which we all should do, We end up growing in ways in which helps our overall growth. However, we must be sincere by our actions towards helping others! Just as sincere as the lady who in which gave up her job for someone to have one.
Her actions was done from her pure heart. I like to look at people like her as a role model. And then pattern myself from watching them towards doing great things for other people, without seeking any gratiitude nor seeking to be noticed as some hero.
i don't know if this has hit my school. i do know some ways that we could save money for berea. the some ways are:
-Cut buses
-less field trips
-do not buy extra recess stuff let the schools use their old stuff to further notice
-do not buy more shelfs just organize them for more space
-have more funraising comminties that DO NOT COST ALOT
-don't use so much light just open the windows
-do not use so much computer energy in 1 week just cut i down to only 20 minutes on the computers
-do not use the smart board alot just use the books more
-walk down to tell a teacher something or have a kid deliver a note not call them from the school phone
i think this was a nice thing to do,espicially since our economy is bad.
well, someone i know had to give up her hair for kids suffering of luchemia. i was so proud of her. her hair is almost grown back in now. she is a role model for me, and should be a role model for everyone.
One of my teachers told the class a story about a military woman struggling to pay at a grocery store. The guy in front of my teacher went up to the woman and paid for her grocery items. The military woman said thank you and when the woman left, the girl at the cash register told the man, "You are a hero."
Selflessness is one thting that americans are ignoring in modern society. If everyone was like that woman, this country would be greater and stronger in brotherhood and peace. Our country would have greater bonds(with other countries) and greater prosperity among the world. We wouldn't be at war if we where selfless, but it would have to be asserted other wise ther wouldn't be an america.
We need selflessness in our world today. There isn't enough.
