Childhood Obesity

The government says that about one-third of American children are overweight or obese.  Suggestions on how to get young people to slim down:  Make food labels easier to read, make school lunches healthier, limit the amount of TV kids watch, and reduce the size of the portions that kids eat.

Tell us what you think would be the most effective way to reduce childhood obesity, whether it's listed here or you have your own ideas.

Well you should maybe talk to the parents about cutting down on the foods, not the schools. Because it benefits the parents just as much that their child is over weight.

I think that making the labels on a food can easier to read is just a waste of money because kid don't normally read the labels on a food can.

Well first off all, most people in the United States, especially younger people, are obese because of the expenses of healthy food. Unhealthy food is much cheaper, and therefore, easier to obtain in this economy. If healthy food were cheaper, we would see a drastic decrease of obesity in the United States.

If I was gonna try to reduce childhood obesity I would try to find another solution instead of taking away the things that kids love.

I think exercising about 30 minutes a day is a great way to reduce your weight. Playing sport is a way you could reduce your weight and have fun. However, choosing the right food to eat is important too. Especially, staying away from junk food like chips or candy.

I think that the most effective idea is to limit the amount of TV kids watch. Children almost always eat snacks, or something when they watch TV. Snacks fully consist of unheathful materials, that can make kids more fatter. So children's TV time should be limited.

The most common causes of childhood obesity are genetic factors, lack of physical activity, unhealthy eating patterns, or a combination of these factors. Only in rare cases is being overweight caused by a medical condition such as a hormonal problem. What would be ways to combat these problems?
It's hard to get rid of genetic factors, although many of those are results of environmental problems. If parents have an unhealthy lifestyle, it's much more likely for the kids to lead an unhealthy lifestyle as well. They grew up in an environment where junk food and/or lack of exercise is usual. Adults should probably lead by example, converting to healthier lifestyles so their kids won't lead an unhealthy lifestyle.
Lack of physical activity could be solved by more supported, vigorous Physical Education classes in school. Even though it would compromise the amount of time left for actual education, it would help to combat childhood obesity.
Unhealthy eating patterns could be eliminated by making school lunches healthier. Unfortunately, kids love sugar and things high in fat content. It would be harder convince kids that vegetables are actually tasty. One way that it could be helped would be if parents would cook more vegetables for kids. I know several good recipes that helped me get over my aversion to vegetables.

The government should also get kids to get up and be active more often, make foods that a lot of kids like, such as pizza, healthier by giving us whole wheat bread, and making the fruits and vegetables organic. They should also get us to read more often, for example my school is doing a reading club where all the students read for 15 minutes a night, get a sheet signed and if we read a certain number of nights, we get a prize.

I think the only way to lower children's obesity rate is to go straight to the source: America's food system. Not many people know what actually goes into their food. It's easier to go pick up a meal at Burger King than prepare a healthy meal at home. The first step to stop obesity is to educate people on the food they put in their mouths.

I think that kids should slow down on the chocolate. And go out and play more or walk and ride a bicycle!!Alot of kids are obesed and there problem is because they watch t.v to much and that's not healthy.

    February 10, 2010 at 9:47 pm |

some kids dont understand that it's not healthy to be obeased. I think that for kids to become more healthier is for them to go out and evcersize and not watch as much as T.V. Or to eat more foods that are healthy for them.

The best way to curb childhood obesity is to raise awareness of what causes the obesity. If kids don't learn to associate junk food, TV, and soda with obesity, then no progress will be made. We'll just keep getting fatter and fatter.

I don't know why people i so fat when they know that obesity kills you. What I think they should do is go outside and play or exercise and stop thinking about food.

Kids should spend more time running outside than inside playing computer games and such. Also, parents should help them develop healthy eating habbits they are young.

Obesity would be a lot better if people just TRIED. The government needs to be encouraging people to just try to not eat as much. The food labels help, but you need to go deeper than just the box.

well,i think the best way to solve this problem is to eat less and do more exercise which is the traditional way for people to balance their daily life.morever ,it will be better if parents see to this problem and put this into practise together with their children to set an example.

I think that an alert should go out to parents, telling them to talk with their children about obesity. Schools can also think of tastier foods for lunches but also nutritious and healthy.

People in other countries are alot more less weight than America's children. I have visited to Asia before and have noticed that everything they eat include tons of vegetables and it tastes good. As well as that, they eat like 2/3 the amount of what we eat every meal. Also, most people don't use cars to go anywhere. For example, every student rode their bike or walked to school at the school I visited while I was there. My parents are Japanese and they always walked like 4 kilometers only to get to school! It took 40 minutes just to get to school! I believe that Americans should take initiative to use less of their car, to get more excersize, and don't be lazy and just stop by at a fast food restaurant to eat.

I think the most effective way to decrease childhood obesity is to persuade people to eat less junkfood. To do this, i think people should make "healthy junkfood" I've heard of a group that make food taste good, but it was actually healthy food for veggie haters, actually.

I think a realistic option would be to encourage fast food restaurants to promote their healthier menu meals to children. The reality of the situation is that many parents of obese children are also parents who are in such a rush that they frequently stop at a fast food restaurant instead of making dinner. With healthier food options at these fast food locations at least there would be some attempt at healthier than usual food choices. Of course, the best choice scenario would be parents just making balanced meals for their children, but not everyone wants to set aside enough time for that.

I believe that dealing with the issue of obesity is important and my wonderful teacher Mr. Youman has helped me to realize the effects it can have on society. Taking care of obesity will indirectly help the Health Care issue our country is torn over.

Excercising is a great way of lowering obesity but you can't force kids to do it. So I think it's their parents' job to make healthy meal for their children. Also, showing them the ingredients of fast foods can be effective. They would be surprised and maybe they won't dare eating those kinds of food again.

Parents can help out. Like putting a treadmill in front of the T.V. or only buying healthy food. As for school launchs it costs less money to make your own launch and then you can determin what healthy snacks you pack.

It is easier to raise a child eating healthy and being active from the start than to try to change their habits after years of inactivity and junk food. So some efforts should focus on educating expectant mothers. That said, we also need to help those children who are currently obese. That will take a mix of educating parents, educating children and offering healthy choices at reasonable prices. For the most part, obesity is a bigger problem among the very poorest of American children. So we need to give those children more access to healthy food choices, playgrounds, and noncompetitive fitness programs that focus on fitness rather than competition.

Teachers should stop giving candy out to their students. They are influencing the students too much. Eatting junk food will stop; when parents don't let their children eat chips, and watch TV, there will be a difference.

I think kids should attend sports or any other activities to exercise and work out to lose weight. If kids don't make a sports team they can go to and weight lift, run, and play outside and keep trying to make the team every year. Plus I think kids should have recess in the elementary and middel schools again. Also kids should cut back on fast food and should eat more vegetables and fruit and a little less protien and meats.

To reduce child obesity, the government should maybe make some sort of plan for what foods kids eat, and how much kids excersise everyday. Obese children could follow this plan everyday and hopefully lose weight.

Do you know the fact that the american kids that are abroad aren't so fat? So I think it's a good idea to eat and drink Asian food and tea than junk food and soda.

Many of the kids are obeis because the parents are big so the kids are following in the parents foot steps. SO what we should do is maybe pass a law stopping big companies in making so many sugary and fat foods.Just because you can do it does not mean you can. Yes it might be good but our youth should stop eating some of the stuff because of the commercials they see. SOme of the kids see the commericials are showing the kids what we can eat does not mean we should eat some of the stuff the big sugary companies are making

the most effective way to fix childhood obesity is not through the economy because they don't control how the kids live. the only way to fix it is through the parents. parents aren't really caring enough about their own weight, so why are they going to care about their kids weight? thats the main source of the problem: parents.

    February 11, 2010 at 10:04 am |
  53. Sandra

Kids should not have to worry about the risks about childhood obesity. The ones who should truely fix this is adults and schools. Adults should buy healthier foods then junk food. Schools should prepare healthier and more nutritious lunches. One thing we can improve are vending machines. Why do kids need junk food in school, that gives kids one more reason to eat it. Parents dont like how their kids are unhealthy , but you see them buying candy bars and soda. Honeslty, the ones who should be helping children out are the school districts and parents.

The way to combat childhood obesity is through portion control and physical exercise. You can still eat something like a burger or ice cream as long as you have it in moderation: once in a while or in small portions. Plus, kids need to exercise more. Instead of playing something like dodgeball or jump-rope during physical education, they should do something more exerting. Kids also need to be educated in health class about healthy food choices, exercise, and the effects of obesity.

What we need to do to slow down the rate of childhood obesity is to GET OUTSIDE AND PLAY! That includes parents too! The whole family should be outside playing, even the pets. Ok, making the food labels easier to read wouldn't change anything. Kids still wouldn't pay anymore attention to them. Our school lunches are about as healthy as they can get, but they could only have pizza one day rather than offering it everyday. I do think that limiting the amount of T.V. kids watch is a good idea, because my little sister spends all of her time in front of it and she never goes outside. Reducing the portion might also help. I think the best thing that could reduce childhood obesity, is adults making heathly changes. Children mirror adults and if the adult is eating unhealthily so will the child.

I think that schools should 1. make P.E. mandatory everyday or have recess, 2. Schools should serve healthier lunches, and 3. Parents should limit the amount of TV and video games that their children play.

  73. Amari

Well i dont think that making the labels on foods easier to read will make a differnece. Most kids dont read the labels even if they are readable. I am a kid and i know i dont read it. I blame most of the fact that kids are obese on parents. They should watch what they kids eat and not just let them eat whatever. Some of it is the schools fault. They feed the kids anything and also sell cooks, sodas, and other sugary foods and drinks. If you do let your kid eat whatever they want at least get them in a sport so they cn work the calories off

    February 11, 2010 at 11:18 am |
  74. Nick

The results of obesity are appauling and if people are made to understand that with a poor diet comes a poor figure they can personally make changes and if more children are made to exercise at school through P.E and are fed better at home by their parents, in time the obesity level will go down.

fat people need to control themselfs. they know if they are getting fat and they need to exercise. If they do not get outside and play they will die when they are 20. Fat people can limit what they eat. everybody has some self control and they are not just pigs.

I believe that people with obesity is to give them more fruits and vegtables and less fat like with every meal they shoud fruits or vegtables and have fats once a month or never. And they should also exercise.

I think that the parents of a child have a big impact, or influence, on how well the child can control the foods they eat, how much they eat, and how much they are active. If the parent would focus more on their weight and obesity, then the child will too.

It starts, like everything, with parents. Neither the government, nor its extension–the public school, can possibly do anything to change kids' habits. Schools have been educating children about healthy eating for generations, yet kids keep getting fatter and fatter. When parents wake up and realize that their job is to help their child grow up healthy and prepared to meet the challenges of the real world, rather than thinking that their job is to make their kids happy, the childhood obesity rate will start to decline. Until then, kids, like adults, will just keep getting fatter.

I think that a good way to reduce obesity is that making the labels bigger and more kid friendly. Also making the price of unhealthy food more expensive than making healthy cheaper. For example they could do some more two for one deal on fruits and veges. I believe it's interesting how a lot of people will place blame on portion size and school lunches for childhood obesity. I will admit, I didn't have the healthiest choices growing up in school, but things have gotten better. I believe that there will never be a set portion size for every person, because every person needs a different amount of food.

I believe that Nintendo had a great idea toward physical fitness with the Wii Fit game. This game in itself promotes physical activity, which is important for kids who don't make a lot of friends, or for people who don't have money to drive to a gym and pay 100 dollars a week/month for a membership.

If there were more things out there (not just games) promoting physical activity, and physical fitness, there would be a better incentive to "get out and play" as said by Nickelodeon. Kids and teenagers need to know that healthy food can taste delicious. They need to know that getting out and playing with friends is just as fun as playing a video game. They need to understand what they're putting in their bodies.

But it's hard with all the commercialism with every company attempting to get you to buy its product. Obviously, if we all cut back, they would loose money, and none of us want that because we all like it. I admit, i like it.

In short, we need to let kids and teens understand how to stay healthy and how to have fun doing it.

I think the best way to cut down on childhood obesity is to encourage kids to exercise. Even something as simple as going outside and playing a game could help make kids more active.

i think child obesity about it if y is a problem. so many people you see in my school are over waight. i mean think about it if you want to have less stress or healthier skin you would not want to go to school and have all these skinnyf people around you and if i was over waight and i had to do that and have all those kids making fun me i would slim down. i would not want to be over waight becuse you will not want to get up out of were you were sitting and that causes you to be over waight.i think of over waight people are like babies all they do is eat sleep and sit down and watch t.v. i think a good way to stop it is to set your t.v on a timer and when your t.v turns off go outside and play for atleast 30 miutes.

I think that a way to reduce childhood obesity is for kids to get more exercise, eat healthier meals like fruits, vegetables, less meats, and read food labels before they choose a certain food to eat. The parents also need to take a big step in teaching there children the smarter and healthier way to eat!!!

    February 11, 2010 at 1:21 pm |
  99. Brandon

I think the parents should take more control over their child's weight. They shouldn't let the child eat whatever they want, and they need to make sure their children are eating healthy. Most parents probably don't know the dangers of letting their children become obese, so we need to let them know what will hapen to their children if they are overweight.

well its not that kids cannot see food labels its that they choose not to so the parents should set a example for those kids and make them go outside for a hour and play football cause i know most kids know how to play football

Making school lunches healthier is always a good idea. Kids complain about healthy food tasting bad, but they also complain about school food tasting bad. If you make the school food better for us, we won't know the difference.

If we want to lower obesity we should all Get Up and Move just like Mrs. Obama said. It is hard to get up and exercise when we have a t.v or computer at home but we all have to understand that obesity is not healthy for us and get more movitated to improve our health and well being. we all need to take conciouse of what our bodys need instead of giving it what it shouldnt have.

I think the parents of these children need to take responsibility and bring healthier food in the house and not so many sugary snacks. And since there's a lot of unhealthy foods at school, the parents should pack their children personal lunches to carry to school that will be healthier for them.

Where I live you see fast food place after fast food place. And you see so many obese children its sad. I think we need to change that by making healthier foods and get more exercise during the school hours because most children wont if they are home. Its very important to stop childhood obesity people need to make a difference and i am trying to help but its hard when theres so many fatty foods everywhere.

I most definently agree with Obama and I think obesity should be delt with because it is a serious problem. Overweight kids can lose their lives at the most youngest age all because nobody doesn't pay attention to their weight.

  110. chris

think the only way to lower children's obesity rate is to go straight to the source: America's food system. Not many people know what actually goes into their food. It's easier to go pick up a meal at Burger King than prepare a healthy meal at home. The first step to stop obesity is to educate people on the food they put in their mouths-hayden.
for example deer meat is healthier than beef because you know where it came from, is not grown using steroids and is able to go somewhere.

I agree with the Childhood Obesity situation 100%. I feel like our youth today are overweight do to all of the junk food. It's time for Parents to take control of what their child eats and how much of it they do eat. Fast food is great, but too much of it is unhealthy and I feel as a part of our youth that it's becoming a big problem and something needs to be done about now before it gets out of hand.

I think there are to simple solutions for child obiesity you need to stop letting kids eat Mcdonalds every day and make them exercise 60 minutes a day kinda like what the NFL is doing with the play 60

  115. rachel

i think that stores and manufacturerers should take some of the fat and suger away from their food and that kids should run around and play out side for like an hour or 30 minutes a day.

    February 11, 2010 at 1:33 pm |
  116. Deborah

The reason so many teens are obese is because they have so much! Americans are lucky enough to have the food they need, and others don't. Many teens in America are obese because they have a freezer full of ice cream, something others can't even think about. Teens don't have to worry about running out, because they have enough. They buy more, though, and soon, they're just eating junk food like there's no tomorrow! If we shared what we had with others, then teens would probably be more towards the normal weight side.

I think that parents should try to control what there kids eat , because now days there is so much food out there that has tons of fat and sugar in it, and sugar can cause diabetes and hurt your kindneys and things like that.

I think we should stop eating all of that Mcdonalds food and start eating things like grapes, salads, apples and things like that. Also I think they should put more natural things in food instead of alot of sugar and calcium. So that is what I think they should do to stop child obeisity.

I think that the food companys should use natural food instead of prosest food. At school they should use recess to burn off the food they ate and then they can not get as fat, and i think that paent s should make kids what for dinner or eat heather food.

    February 11, 2010 at 1:36 pm |

I think that excerising about 30 minuints a day is a good way to help people from getting fat and also to not sit in front os the tv all the time because most people just sit there and eat junk food and watch tv for hours. And just go outside and play and get excerise every day.

    February 11, 2010 at 1:41 pm |
  125. Logan

I think they should make it easier for children to join sports. Some children can't join sports because they don't have anyone to take them, because it is too expensive, or because they aren't very good. Children could loose a lot of weight if more of them could join sports all year.

    February 11, 2010 at 1:41 pm |
  126. Mitch

first you should tell parents to try to cut down on the food she gives her children because it partly the parents fault that children are so fat and that adults are fat because the excersise equipment costs like $1,000 and they should just start out with like walking and the children dont even know they are fat until their parent say they should cut down on the junk food but until then the parents say they are all muscle.

its up to the kids to make the right choice not to eat a lot of bad food. The only idea I have for the government is have a couple of commercials that reaches out to kids to be active and control their eating habits.

There's no easy way to stop child obesity. This is the child's decision along with the parents. The government can do whatever they can to try and stop it, but they can't change every kid's mind about food.

When i see a obese person honestly i feel bad. But i want to do something to help. I thought a show like the Biggest loser but for children would be great. We would take around fifteen groups of two people per group and they would be partners. They would do two activitys or game type of things like how they do in survivor but with less hitting in the sports. Just something where you would have to run, lift stuff like that type of thing. They would get get healthy meals, get rooms with a t.v. in it that they could watch but lights out at 9:15. ( unless something like the Super Bowl comes up or another big sporting event is going to be on.) Hopefully we would be able to get some big superstar to come on every now and then to inspire the kids.

A way to get America's children back to a healthy weight is to raise prices on junk food/unhealthy food and video games or television systems. If we make it harder to purchase the things that are making us overweight, then we might get back down to size.

Childhood obesity hits home for me beacuse my sister is obese. I think that when we children go to the movies they think that they have to get a large slushie and a large popcorn! But you don't have to you can get a small popcorn and a small slushie. My sister doesn't cut out the unhealthy food she just eats them less often. So all food is fine in moderation.

I think making labels for food bigger is a good idea(not for those companies) but that way you can see the nutrition better. Some people say, "Well you should just stop eating, but its no that easy." I also think making school food healthier would be a good idea, but usually kids dont eat the healthy things because they don't look very appetizing.

    February 11, 2010 at 1:53 pm |
  145. Lateeda

If they make the labels for food bigger, they will just be WASTTING money! No kid looks at the nutrition labels any way. Besides, homework is the real cause of the obeasidy problem. When teachers give too much homework, children don't have enough time to go outside and play.

I think that childhood obesity is just wrong, i think that it can be cured with more exercise. Every child should have to join at least one sport, even if they don't want to. Parents should be able to help their kids, but if they don't want to go through the extra hassle of taking their kids to practices, or even games, they should at least have their kids join a gym, or an after school health program, and take a late bus home, unless they always ride home with their parents, or walk home. I think that childhood obesity is just not right, because the more exercise a kid gets, the longer a kid might live his or her life, but this is only my 7th grade student opinion, and I think that somebody older than 12 should handle it better than only me.

    February 11, 2010 at 1:59 pm |
  148. Samantha

I think that our schools should have healthier foods also have healthier food at our houses. We could also cut down on fast food. There are some families that have fast food just about everyday and that isn't healthy at all, because fast food has grease and grease is not healthy. We should start having healthier resturants. If we try to find a recipe to make unhealthy food more healthier that would help too. I also think that grown ups need to limit their kids time on the t.v. And the computer, Because just sitting around all day doing that it might get the kids to gain more weight because they are not being activie. Also they should keep sports throughout the year. During the winter they play sports inside and during the summer they should play sports outside, also during the summer they should atleast go out for about an hour so they can get some exercise to make them more healthier. I agree that making food labels easier for kids to read would help a lot more so they can see all the sugar and calories that the food has.Thats what I think could help there are a lot more though.

I don't think that kids listen when adults talk about obesity. The comments are much more effective if they come from friends, peers, or themselves. You can't force a person to want to be healthy and to change their way of eating. Many people struggle with this issue.

    February 11, 2010 at 2:41 pm |

In order to reduce childhood obesity is to get most elementary schools to have a physical education class that lasts all school year long. When a child goes to this class, it should be fun for the kids and not seem like a weight losss program.... yet another way to help reduce obesity in kids is to educate them about what is healthy and what is unheatlhy and explain why. Too many children are not educated enough to understand the importance of heatlh.

I think that there should be something done with the nutirtion. As one of the one-third kids of america that are overweight, I find it hard to lose weight easily. I exercise everyday almost, I eat healthy, and I watch how much I eat. Even doing that, I realize that it is mostly the nutritional fats. Sometimes I look on the internet for nutritional-looking words and realize that they aren't healthy at all. They should have someone make sure that everrything is absolutely sure that it is healthy before it is shipped out.

I believe that childhood Obesity is a very unhealthy, and a bad thing but some people can not help it. Some kids have a disease that makes them obese, and they get taken away from there families, and that is horable and wrong. If you can help being over weight try to eat right. If not them try and eat healthy, but dont judge.

The thing is that most people don't know how hard it is for people to quit. They just expect people to understand. Everyone just says it's easy but they don't know that. So really you have to talk to that person and get to know what they do so that it can actually be something personal to them. Although some kids don't really think they can do that, but parent are the ones that have to slowly but gradually keep them from going the wrong path.

I understand that it is not healthy to be obese but you should get of your couch and go work out some where. Also eating healthy foods like meat vegtibles and fruit can also help alot to.

I think children that are obese should be eating healthier and be working out more. One day the obesety will really effect these children later on in life. They could possibly die.

We think that recreational centers should be built, more guidelines for fast-food restaurants to make labels easier to read, more opportunities for schools to implement recess, and parents should take responsibility to make sure their children exercise and eat right.

-Get kids to play on "Play 60" on cartoon network (a excercise show for kids)
-Go outside and play with your friends.
    -Start a kids gym
    -Eat tiny pieces of food
-Make more things like mini burgers, because they are cute and fun, plus less food to eat.
    -Eat less junk food
-Teach your kids how to pack a healthy lunch
-Teach kids how to count calories
-Have a daily fit tip for your students.

Overweight children have their parents to blame for part of it. Kids don't know any better than to keep eating. They don't know the long term effects so it should be up to the parents to control what their kid is eating. The world would be a better place if parents started to pay attention to what their kids are doing.

I think kids are obese because something bad has happened in there life so they eat to take away the pain. It`s also part of the parents fault because they let there kids eat everything and anything they want and don`t tell them when they have to stop! Most kids are lazy adn play video games all day instead of going outside and getting activie.

    February 11, 2010 at 4:13 pm |
  184. Jennie

I think the time of television should be limited, and when theyre not busy, or doing anything they should be active. They should get out and do sports or go play catch or something. I don't think all obese kids care about being unhealthy and over weight. The school lunches don't help either with the obesity problem, they're serving us more sugar and fat than we need. Half of the people I sit by barely eat their food because it just looks disgusting. They aren't usually very good, and don't look very healthy.

I feel bad for those kids. I really hope that people can think of a way to get those kids healthier. We really need to just get the message out there to exercise daily and eat healthier. If everyone just stays on top of that then everything could work itself out and america would become a healthy nation.

i think that the government should lower the prices of healthy food so that kids can get there daily fruits and vegtables. i also think that kids should at lease work out or go outside for 30 mins to 1 hour. just to stay healthy and fit.

i think that kids should be more active and eat more healthy. If they eat to much they will become lazy and not participate in any active activities. Have more activity involed in moving at school should help kids be more healthy.

Obviously childhood obesity is a very large and growing issue... as to how to handle it is a very good question. There are obviously many different ways to approach the problem. Ideas such as funding for healthier school lunches and "getting fit" campaigns are decent ideas and much to my biased point of view... stock. In my honest opinion I believe that to fight childhood obesity and any other issue you must attack the problem at the scource... their leisure activities. What they do and dont do is the problem. If they just sit at home and munch on fried chips all day long instead of going for a bike ride are factors. Maybe instead of getting somebody to drive you 2 blocks to your friends you could WALK... or eat more fruits and vegetables instead of cookies and soda. The government and schools can only do so much. At some point... its up to the children.

I know that obesity is a growing problem in our community and nation. It first started with mostly the adults because kids were told that they would grow out of it. They are wrong. Childhood obesity is a problem and we need to do something about it. We need to create a program that will make kids want to get up and play and not sit to watch TV!

    February 11, 2010 at 4:29 pm |
  191. kallie

i think most childhood obesity comes from their moms and dads. They feed their children alot more than what they should, they try to make the kids eat more than what they can handle and they let their children sit in front of the tv all day not caring if they excersize or not. I think childhood obesity starts at a very young age like maybe after they turn one. all we need to do is start excersizing more and quit being couch potatos get on a bike take a walk with some friends all theese things can help stop childhood obesity.

you can not force any body to do anything. you can encourage them but it is his/her life and if you force things down thier throat they will not be happy. but i do agree with people getting healthier and making the right decisions. but just bcuz you make look skinny doesn't mean you are healthy. i say if you going the extra mile to make obese kids get healthy you should go all the way by making all American kids get healthy

One of the most affective ways would be parents signing the kid up for sports that they would enjoy. This would get the kid active, and maybe even get the kid to practice at home(if they can).

    It is a 3-step system:
    Turn off disney channel
    Eat heathier and in moderation
    Get outside and get active

If you think that is hard you are SO right but which one do you want more the bag of potato chips or a body every person dreams of.

Oh and one more thing.... SHUT UP AND GET ACTIVE!!!!!!

I think that kids parents should take away or limit the amount of tv their kids watch. Throw away all the junk food and replace it with healthier snacks. Plus instead of just telling their kids to go outside, go outside with them.

Well, kids would probably eat good, healthy food, if they could. (and if it was good food) But a lot of parents can't cook or just don't want to, which results in them just driving through McDonalds.

I think that the government, parents and teachers need to be teaching kids a lot more about nutrition, and the values of a healthy lifestyle. Also, the dangers of obesity, and what junk food and too much of it can do to you overeat it.

i believe that kids with obesity or becoming and even before they are becoming one they need to have their parents an them selves make a(n)
chart of what kind of foods they eat a day, how many calories and so on.
They need over 3 hours of outside..sounds easy enough i do about 5 hours, and play with your friends or run jog walk fast paced an even walk pretty simple too do people. Kids who are need help from parents or maybe coaches or staff of obesity help make a better life style for the kids.. Certain foods can be eaten daily, not make so to speak too much food. some little junk a week like 3-6 depends on how bad an need to work off that weight then. Less tv an food inside house majorily please! kids must have play time certain amount of hours an so much more i can think about, i wanna see/hear what all of you think about CHILD OBESITY.

i think everyone is obese because America is getting fatter. plus we have a show that worships everyone that weighs more then 300 pounds and some shows that follow family that have more than 9 people.

If people sit around all day they will get fatter...

so if we stop the food that is bad for you from getting made and they go out and exercise like at snap fitness or whatever and stop laying down and doing nothing

To me, it is all about American diet. eating healthier food instead of fast food (Burgers, french fries, and especially Soda...) would have a significant impact on eliminating obesity. I think the best results can be achieved through creating an entirely new culture of nutrition for the long run.

Well it's time to turn that weight into muscle and become A LOT stronger. Help them get outside and shoot some hoops or something or how about football! I don't like the fact that America is one of the fattest countries in the WORLD! Oh and get off those video games and turn over a new leaf.

i think that kids should start eating healthy because if they keep on eating fattening foods there going to become over weight or there going to die. if it was up to me i would be owning my own exercise business. because that would be changing children's life on there obesity. i don't think that junk food, t.v, and sodas are not that good for obesity children.

I think That Children really actually become obese because it runs through the family. I don't think they're obese because of pop. It may be because people treat them differently and (NO OFFENSE) they get what they want and so they sit around everywhere and not do anything. A child about 11 years old and weighing in over 120 pounds is too much. Thanks... By the way Carl Azuz..... You're AWESOME!!!

The two things that you could do to stop yourself form getting obese are eating healthy, and ecxersising every day if you do these two things you chould be fine.

There is no way to stop childhood obesity during this day and age. Video games can be played with friends, making less effort than going outside there's fast food restaurants on every corner, and the internet requires much less effort to talk to friends or hang out than it used to.

It does not matter how large the print on the label is. If someone is going to buy a food item, chances are they will buy it no matter how large the print may be.

  221. Jessie

I agree completely with this Childhood Obesity Campaign. But what I don't get about this bill is why it's important to make food labels bigger... I mean kids don't really ever read food labels unless we have to do it in our Health class.

    February 11, 2010 at 6:56 pm |
  222. Jessica

I that it starts with the parents, the parents have a bigger influence on the kids than anybody else does.

    February 11, 2010 at 6:58 pm |
  223. Jessie

I think that it's not us kids' fault. If it weren't for the cost of healthy food, maybe the country would have a lower obesity rate. For example, you go to a baseball game and you get a hotdog... the people there are the ones serving it not us so how can you blame US?

    February 11, 2010 at 6:59 pm |
  224. Kevin

Obesity is not always the fault of the person with it. If the First Lady really wants to take care of this problem, she needs to talk to kids too. She also needs to create an excercise program that is fun, not tedious and pressuring.

    February 11, 2010 at 7:04 pm |
  225. Rachel

Childhood Obesity is a serious problem. To reduce Childhood Obesity, you should eat healthy and workout every morning before school and before you go to bed. Try push-ups or sit-ups. Do that every day and you will definitely loose weight.

    February 11, 2010 at 7:13 pm |
  226. Anagha

I think that the most effective way to reduce childhood obesity issues is to get the parents or an adult with an influence on a child's life to introdue foods with a good nutritional value in a way that makes it "endeering" to the child. Also discourage them from going on a diet-that only slows down their metabolism, and in the procces makes their obesity increase.

    February 11, 2010 at 7:16 pm |
  227. Anna

I think that parents should enforce healthy eating habits. How? 1. Parents should influence the kids to eat healthy foods by eating it themselves. If the kids see the parents eating healthy foods then maybe the kids will start eating them as well. 2. Don't go to as many fast food restaurants. Instead, eat at home. You're bound to get a much healthier meal. 3. Get healthier lunch menus at the schools.

    February 11, 2010 at 7:16 pm |
  228. Maria

Making food labels easier to read would help the parents know what's best for their kids. I also think running anti-obesity campaigns for kids on TV would be a good idea as well as improving the quality of school lunches and educating the parents.

    February 11, 2010 at 7:17 pm |
  229. Cassidy

I believe that child obesity is not as much as the kids fault as the parents. The parents allow the child to eat so much. We should not blame everyone for obesity when it's not our fault, it is the individuals fault.

    February 11, 2010 at 7:27 pm |
  230. Bryce

The way to lower child obesity should start at the source like what they put in the food like sugar, fat and calories. They should reduce stuff like that because that's the cause. But it's mostly sugat

    February 11, 2010 at 7:38 pm |
  231. Dillon

I don't know how it is for other schools, but my school lunch consists of fatty, sugary, salty, oily frozen junk. That's probably the biggest problem, but it's close with the fact that American children have just gotten lazy. I've seen friends quit sports teams just because they don't want to put in the extra effort. this is an outrage.

    February 11, 2010 at 7:53 pm |
  232. Jared

There aren't many things that we can do to actually fight childhood obesity. Most of the time, it's actually the obese child's fault because they chose not to do things like eat healthier foods and work out. If everyone would exercise some self-control about what they eat and things like that, then not as many children would be obese.

    February 11, 2010 at 8:06 pm |
  233. Ashelee

" I think that children & teens stare at screens to much, & eat ALOT more than there suppose to. If we lowered the size of the meals they eat it would probally help them out. School lunches should be healthier but, also they you should give you many varities of what you would like to eat. Children these days do not really pay attention to things they eat and they should. Thats how i feel about it"

    February 11, 2010 at 8:08 pm |
  234. Thomas

I love how they are tiring to help children lose weight, but they should let children be themselves, even if they are fat.

    February 11, 2010 at 8:12 pm |
  235. Kayen

I think the most effective way to help childhood obesity would to stop having constant junk food at school. It's not healthy, but there are no parents or anyone who can tell them not to buy six bags of chips or ten cookies every single day. Everywhere at school you can find some sort of candy, and who is to say that this obesity problem can't be fixed just a bit better if school stopped letting kids get away with it?

If kids are, at school, always allowed to buy junk at lunch, then I think that's the problem. Their parents would not be letting them buy cookies and chips everyday at their house, it's just because no one at school is saying 'No' to them. If there was just one rule in every school, that ONE day out of the week was a healthy day, where NO candy would be handed out, NO chips/cookies would be allowed to be bought at school, and if you bought school lunch, you would have to get something healthy as a side, such as a small salad or fruit.

    February 11, 2010 at 8:21 pm |
  236. Michael *

I think that obesity will always be a problem that Americans are faced with. But i think that there are ways that we can all work together to get ourselves in better shape and more fit. We can all make a conscious effort to pay attention to what we pack in our lunches as well as that of our children. We can also not give into our little whims and pay attention to when we shop and not waste our money on junk food and buy the things that are more good for you. If we all come together and try this we could help each other help the economy and help our children.

    Sophomore – American University,

I love the show; I TiVo it so I never miss it. I'm currently writing a paper on what would happen if Senator Rangel's draft proposal ever passed. The effect I chose would be the federal government's interest in physical education. There are only a number of states that require a physical education class be offered, and even fewer that require it to be taken every year k-12. So to answer your proposed question, requiring all students, nation-wide, to take a physical education course k-12 (like my home-state of Illinois), or a mandatory draft requiring all American citizens ages 18-26 to serve in the military. You have to have a certain BMI to serve, and as the pentagon released this past November – 35% of Americans ages 17-24 are unfit to serve in the military.

So how do we solve child obesity? I believe physical education is a must. Also, my mother always told me to finish my plate at dinner, I did, but I was also a tri-sport athlete in high school, two sports in college, but I'm sure that proverb ends up a little worse for the over weight children who aren't as active, also being required to clear their plates.

    Keep up the good work,

Obestiy is bad, but we have more pressing issues. The economy, the enviroment, Haiti, like three wars, I think that is what we should focus on. But don't ban bake sales. My school raised over a thousand dollars for Haiti with one.

    February 11, 2010 at 8:45 pm |
  244. Stefano

I think that things involving making the economy should come first, spending billions of dollars on helping these childeren is not a good use of money on my opinion. Plus, fixing food can labels is not going to be very effective since most kids know what they are getting when they eat.

    February 11, 2010 at 8:46 pm |
  245. Liz

I think that the parents are at fault. They need to set a healthy example for children. If kids grow up in a household full of junk food and bad eating habits, they will think that it is okay to eat unhealthy food all the time. Unless America wants to be know as the Nation of Obesity, we need to pull our act together and make a change in what we eat.

If there is no stop sign, no one will stop. Here, the stop sign must be placed at school. It has been shown that kids eat junk food more often at school than anywhere else. If the school doesn't have any junk food but sells delicious fruit and juice instead of chips and soda, the we don't have any choice except to buy what has been laid out for us. This has been done at my school, and trust me, I have been feeling much more comfortable in a bikini now. We may not notice it, but with every bag of chips we put into our system we are simply overflowing it with trash that doesn't benefit our body in any way. When we have fruit, we are putting natural goodness into our system that gives us energy and tastes just as good, if not better. My solution: STOP SELLING JUNK FOOD AT SCHOOL!

I think childhood obesity is due to the parents because they sometimes offer no encouragement to their overweight child to work out and get in shape and instead they hope that when they grow up they will be on the Biggest Loser.

  252. Christian

I think schools should have a mandatory physical education program that forces kids to get exercise for at least 30 minutes everyday, and healthier school lunches with less junk food.

    February 11, 2010 at 9:15 pm |
  253. Maddy

I thimk that kids should be more careful about what they eat and when they exercise. They might think working out and eating well is only for parents. Ther could be books or programs for kids about staying healthy and getting exercise and good food.

    February 11, 2010 at 9:19 pm |

Obesity... it is terrible as much as anorexia. Especially in that case(child), it's more horrible. In korea, We usually eat vegetable since childhood. The staple food of the Koreans is rice. Nowadays, although
many children enjoy eating fastfood, soda , etc... , It is not too much to say that korean dish's Eating habits are keep the child health. you try to prefer a vegetable diet to meat food. so you certainly feel satisfation and satisfy your healthy body and mind.

I think that kids who are obese may not only be eating poorly, but also have low self esteem. I'm non making a generalization for everyone, but I think that it is possible that people might get depressed and vent by eating. I think it would be good for schools to change what they serve, and talk to kids, have more interacton with the students. I think it would also help to get them into a sport: it would burn calories, and make them feel that they are good at somthing.

We should make labels easier to read and lunches heathier. But, don't we have more important issues, like Haiti, all the terrorists trying to get in our conrty, and even in Iran with all the Nuclear weapons their building?

I do not think we have serious childhood obesity issues. The problems we do have with that though could be solved by educating kids on how to use food properly. It is a nessicity for life, and should not be a bordom buster. Also we need to make sure kids are eating good food. One thing that would help there is if school lunches were healthier. I know oftentimes i dont get friut simply because the only options are unripe pears or bannanas. Also the vegetables dont look very appetizing either. We need to educate America on the uses of food!

I think all schools should give kids a better life by giving them a better lunch when they cant pack it and I know that a lot of school districts especially mine have enough money to give kids a healthier more naturel lunch then the fast food they give to kids and the really huge porshons we all need to learn portion control.

During the weekends, school breaks ect., kids should do more outdoor activities with friends or family because one of the major causes of childhood obesity is that kids don't get much exercise while overeating non healthy foods.

I think that children should watch what thy are eating. People should start teaching their children that if you eat too much now, it will affect their life later on.

I think we should alter the parents’ dietary habits before trying anything to make children fit. If the parents are used to eat unhealthy food, their children would have less choice, but follow them—some obese children look just like their parents. Moreover, the authorities should make healthy food more affordable than junk food while healthy diet and fitness seem to be the symbol of wealth or upper social status

    February 11, 2010 at 10:33 pm |

well i think if they are hungry let them get a healthy snack like a apple or fruit. and is not just the kids fault. So the schools just give kids healthy foods.

I feel that you should not judge anyone by their weight, but by their charactor.I am a 135 lbs. 6th grade student and people can see past it, but one way is to get slimmer kids is to hide it behind sports that make you run off fat and carbs. It can really work.

I believe it's not only the children who are obese, but also patents. To make a difference i think we should have a sugar tax.

More P.E. Time, less fatty food choices in the cafeteria. Healthier choices in the store. This will limit how much kids will consume, and in the limited eating, will be healthier food, and more physical exercise. Kids should take the initiative on improving themselves for the better. While this may not be the most serious problem facing America, it's still a serious one. We should put this by parents first. Get them to step it up so their kids will live a healthier lifestyle. American children are slowly becoming obese because we have much too much junk food and not enough opportunity to exercise. In other, healthier countries, they stay fit because some of those countries don't have the food choices we have and they can manage their time to involve exercise.

I think one of the reasons of childhood obesity is that people eat and don't get any exercise. If you ate and got at least 30 to an hour of exercise you should see a difference in the way you feel and look.

Excercise, plain and simple is the easiest way to reduce childhood obesity. I like the Wii and the concept behind it. We need more video games that get kids more active.

I think that if we encourage children to spend less time watching T.V. and encourage them instead to take action in sports and outdoor activities, the obese rate will decrease. If we don't take action now, children of all ages will grab themselves a bag of chips and start munching on their couch in front of their T.V. Not only does it kill their health, but also their brains.

Children and young adults need to take responsibility for their diet. Although our parents always have a major influence on what our choices are, we still know the difference between right and wrong, and what's healthy and what's not.

Schools should change the menus to something healthy and still good. They should make like healthy candy bars like with healthy fruits.
They should give kids vitamin fruit flavor drinks so kids will think its junk food but its really not!!! Parents should try to make their kids come to the table and their kids should put a blind fold on and the parents should say a junk food and put a vegie or a fruit in front of the kikids and make the kids eat it and they will tell you what it tastes like and if it is a junk food which it wont be!!!!! So thats what you should do!!

I think that these schools around the USA need to look what they are eating and need more exersizing time. If other people do the right thing, more and more kids will follow your foot steps in the right directon and not the bad. The only real way to solve the problem is for parents to take the initiative to help their children. Sure, the government can stress eating healthier and excersising all they want, but kids probably won't want to change.

(parent prospectve) I think to reduce this problem parents sould not buy junk food for thier children very offten,if you give a child money for lunch (milk for example) make shore they are spending it on that item (if you aren't sure how mabey ask a teacher or trustworthy student.) (loseing wait prospectve) If you're trying to lose wait, before you buy or bite into something bad for you lok into a mirror and ask yourself is this the person I want to be, if not don't eat it.

Making kids watch less television is all up to the parents decisions, but I think the best way would be P.E. for four years. That's the only thing schools can help control. The rest is up to the parents. Kids can eat what their parents let them eat, so if their parents let them eat a double double at In and Out with a large fries, there's honestly nothing the government or schools can do about it. P.E. is the only alternative we have.

You can always tell kids what to do but is that honestly the way to go about it? I think the better way to go is to put out info on the problem, make kids understand the issues with obesity and the health problems that go along with them instead of forcing them to do things they don't want to do.

I think they shouldn't tax people but have programs of different sports come to P.E. classes like ti kwon do. It will show kids different was to exersize plus be some thing fun that the will join more sports. Plus the school lunches should cut down on the salt that the put in school lunches. We should stop eating so much and donate food to people that are under weight and have them heathy and us too. Its a win-win thing here! We should have schools accrost the U.S. doing this and it can be fun!!!!

i think that it will take a lot more then just less T.V and less junk food its going to take a lot of modivation. i would know I'm a teen. It will take will-power and attention for kids to loose weight and some kids it is a medical condition, take my sister for example she is 200 some odd pounds she cant loose any of it but she can gain it because she had a surgery.

i think that fast food joints like mc donalds and burger king should not be allowed to give out toys. because if little 4year old timmy sees a transformes toy on a burger king comercial he wants to go get it. he goes to BK and gets his toy and is all happy but is also eating their food. (which is generaly not healthy) now he always wants to go back and get more toys and nasty food.

Some Cafeteria could post a chart that tells children how much fat on each kind of foods and they highlight the number of fat on most unhealthy foods. That could be intimidating for children who like to eat junk food.

I believe one way of preventing childhood obesity would be to require students to have more gym classes and to have more activities were the students are involved and up and moving around. Also I believe that if the tax percent went down to 5 cents to a dollar and then candy, energy drinks pop, and gum was taxed there would be more money coming in and it would prevent people in general including kids from buying unhealthy and unnecessary items from the store.

  311. Rachel

I don't think that we have a big obesity problem. I mean you walk into school, how many people are obese? 2,3 out of maybe 30? But I think that we should have more phisical education time and for younger students more recess (except they have to do at least one active thing) or just teach them that the choices they make now will matter in their future even though they may not relize it. Because if they want to know why it will effect them, they should take a look at some of the grown-ups, and think about how many times they made fun of the obese people or joked about being pbse because if they choose to be obese now, in the future, they will be those people kids look at and make jokes about. But some kids don't even have an obesity problem, and for the kids who do, they don't want to be laughed at or treated differently.

It's extremely difficult to maintain a healthy diet today because of the mad load of unhealthy food choices available, as well as the infestation of fast food restaurants that have dominated. These choices should either be cut down, or somehow miraculously made healthy.

    February 12, 2010 at 7:32 pm |
  313. Ashley

I do not think it is a serious issue childhood obesity. because we educate kids about eating healthy but there are more inportant issues than childhood obesity because all we can really do is educate the kids and some times it is not the childs fault because some time the child has medication like asthma that makes them look like they are over weight. the goverment should not interfear in the publics biusness because the public has the right to privacy. and the right to eat what they want. there should be limits to what the goverment can put in to law based on the rights of the general public. I know that there are so many people that do eat too much but not always the case. every one know how to eat right there are many people choose to eat all the food they want.

I think governments should work on what the schools do, too, because schools are where every child should be until they graduate.I think they should concentrate on gym classes, because some schools don't even have them, or worse, they have them but they use them just to do plain things and not to work hard to get in shape. I have an overweight person in my gym class, and my coach works him hard because I think he knows that if he doesn't do something, that kid will probably stay that way for the rest of his teenage life.

If you made healthy food more apealing to junk food it helps. But if you realy want ot get down to the core just plain don't keep to much junk in the house. I'm 13 and I have had about 20 cups of soda in my life. I am presently fine and I dont crave sugar and junk all the time. Infact if you dont drink soda young you find that its revolting exspecialy coke. But if you dont like this aproach insted of using sugar use splenda they taste the same and its better for you. But if you realy think about it there are more important things going on in the world. So just get over it like i did and it helped my life I used to be addicted to ice cream but now im hook on .......cucumbers. :0

Making labels more noticeable is not the best way to solve childhood obesity. Not only innovative but basic solution is to have children and their family perceive obesity issues. To acheive it, the president of all over the world must dispose special team and then discuss the problem together. Finally, they have to distribute their thought and the result of the conference to the nation with various media. The most important thing in here is that the speech and expression should be persuasive. Only in that case, the citizen may notice how childhood obesity is serious in their country.

Parents should MAKE there kids go out and play. Most parents just let there kids do what ever they want, like watch tv all day or dont just eat junk food all day, and most parents dont even tell there kids to eat there vegatables, usually when they get older (teenage) they dont listen so they think they can do what ever they want.

Physical Educations helps alot in health. In middle schools, some school have less time running or doing activities then sitting in the class doing works. I proudly think that we should have same amount of pshysical excerises and 1 period of studing.

I don't think it's a good idea. It's not any of the government's buisness if a kid is overweight or not. They should be concerned about the economy–Not childrens images.

-Get kids to play on "Play 60" on cartoon network (a excercise show for kids) – Or play60.com
-Go outside and play with your friends.

    -Eat tiny pieces of food
-Make more things like mini burgers, because they are cute and fun, plus less food to eat.
    -Eat less junk food
-Teach kids how to pack a healthy lunch
-Teach kids how to count calories
-Have a daily fit tip for your students.

I think schools should add better gym classes. Some students just go out and walk the track during gym, or sit and listen to their Ipods. Couldnt the schools do a better job of getting the students more active? Teaching the students a sport and letting the students play it like football or soccer. Also teaching children at an early age to exercise and be healthy would make them be more aware of the "dangers" of being obese.

I think childhood obesity can be prevented if the parents limit the kinds of food their kids eat. There's alott of stuff that little kids wants and their parents just give it to them. It's important for the parents to get active as well as the kids because if the kids see that their parents fat they don't see anything wrong with them being fat. Parents are kids role models. Whatever they eat they will eat.

    P.S. Hi Carl! (:

I think the issue with overweight children is something that we need to help. There are many ways we can help solve this problem but here are some of my ideas. I think that if we get kids to do more sports or recreational activity that would help....another idea that might help is to not let kids eat meats all the time give them some vegetables and fruits often.

Childhood obesity is an issue and I think we should make gym a required class in all schools and in all grades. I'm a senior in High School and at my school we still need to take a physical education class, but we only have it two days a week. I think all kids should be given the chance of a physical education class everyday they are in school. We should also look at what schools are serving in their lunch rooms because that is also a problem some schools have been having.

    February 13, 2010 at 2:23 pm |

I think that recreational programs, like soccer, should be made cheaper, and that we should have more of them. Also, fast food "secrets" and ingredients should be publicized on TV.

I think a big contributor to childhood obesity is not in meals, but what kids eat between them. Most unhealthy food is eaten as a "snack," and not really counted as food by most people. Also, many schools sell and encourage this unhealthy practice by raising money for extracurricular activities through selling candy, donuts and other junk food.

I think the best way to get ride of this is to make high suger food more expancive and take 5% of tax off helthy food like:fruits,vetiboles,ect..At schools have them surve skim milk, low fat or nonfat foods.

I think childhood obesity is a problem because you see some kids out there so skinny and then you see some kids out there just really heavy set and the kids that are heavy set get made fun of. I think its a problem because they should watch how much they eat.

I would say that in PE classes, the coaches should measure the weight of every student in the whole school in the beggining of the school year. Then they should tell each student how much many pounds they need to lose or sometimes gain, for the entire school year. The gym teachers should check up evry quarter on the students to see how they're doing. Finally at the end of the year, the coaches should see what students lost or gained what they were supposed to, if they did a good job, then they'd pass gym class, but if they did a bad job, they might have to repeat gym class for the next school year, the school could also use it for the students grade in PE. Both options are up to the school to decide, but both options will keep kids motivated to stay in shape.

Obesity is a growing epidemic in America today. Everyone is usually told at a young age what is good to eat and what is bad to eat, but that doesnt mean that people dont eat the bad stuff. It may be bad but it tastes good, and more convinient and cheaper. Eating always satisfys boredom, so along with unhealthy choices comes portions. Over eating is easy when the food tastes good and you have n othing else better to do. Its hard to eliminate obesity because its so convinent. If someone whats to be healthy its all about self determination and contiously choosing healthy or easy.

First thing kids dont even read the labels so we dont care if you make them bigger. Second we dont like the luches as are so if you make them more whole wheat gag!!! Third i dont see how you will stop kids from watching t.v or gettting on the internet its like our lives and if we want it that much we will find a way. So i dont think any of these will help but if you get the kids active and in a sport or activity with exercise in it that would be more successful.

There are many factors involved in obesity. In many cases, obesity is directly related to one's emotions. Also a major issue is the increasing rate of depression in teens. I think, in many ways, our schools are failing in providing real education that we can use when we become adults. Everything is about that little glowing box with all the little glowing grades. Stress is a factor for obesity. Homework limits students' time to get outside and be active, and stress can debilitize anyone.

i think that one way to lower childhood obisity is to make sure that kids should be able to go to a gym for 1 hour before school so they can lose weight and gain muscles. also kidss that have trouble eating healthy should be able to get sighned up for a nutrition class and maybe every body should do that. also instead of kids having gym two times a week make it three times to help them exersise more. also i think that kids who sit infront of their TV's and don't do anything and enjoy life are the kids that are most likley ro become obesite

    February 15, 2010 at 11:33 am |
  351. Lindsay

If you think about it, those obese kids are the ones who sit and play video games all day. I have never seen the obese kids working out on their own time which I think would help the rate go down.

I think parents need to take more control over what their child is eating.
I also think that we should put up banners or posters encouraging your child to look a little closer at food lables and the banners should recomend a helthier choice.

I think that to help with childhood obesity we do need to eat healthier at school. But also instead of gym class only being half a year it could be a whole year every other day, then you are exercising throughout the whole year. And parents shouldn’t buy a whole bunch of chips and soda because just having them in the house will make kids want to eat them. So you could replace them with fruit and healthy stuff. I also think kids should start exercising more, like going for walks and playing outside.

    February 15, 2010 at 3:38 pm |
  354. Cherry

Schools and parents have to provide healthier lunch, especially for young students who are growing up. Kids also have to drink more vegitable and fruit juice, instead of drinking sodas. Drinking excessive amount of soda is a serious problem in the U.S.

    February 15, 2010 at 3:49 pm |
  355. Ben

I think that childhood obesity is partly your parents fault. Some don't care for their children's health. Other parents will "over" nurish their children, because they are worried. Some adults hide snacks and junk food. So, some kids are being blamed for their own obesity.

    February 15, 2010 at 5:39 pm |

I think that trying to take care of the children that are obese is a good idea, but we need to not make a federal case out of it and worry about the forecloser and job finding problems with the economy.

The reason why people are obese is because they take a soft drink a big bag of chips and sit down on the T.V. all day long. If we drink and eat less soft drinks and unhealthy foods, go outside more and get more exercise we will become a healthier country.

    February 15, 2010 at 9:41 pm |

I think that childhood obesity is not the kid's fault. Their parents didn't watch what they ate and the schools don't really provide healthy food. I mean sure they have veggies and fruits but do the kids always eat them or take them? I know i don't really do that. But all i am really trying to say is that its normal to have kids that are obesity its not like they are different from us, their parents just need to help them eat healthier.

We have just celebrated spring festival these days here in china, people get together and share the traditional chinese food and watched the spring festival gala which is watched by billions of people while eating traditional snancks. But miracles happened!Eating so much didn't make things bad. That's beacause i prepared food like dumplings with my family and went out to participate in the local celebrations.I even skip rope !Physical exercise is a way of life.so no matter how busy you are, never forget to set aside some time to jump,to run ,to enjoy the pure happiness of life.Slow down your speed of life a little ,go out of your car for a walk to work or school.you will find miracles happen and the problem of obesity is no longer that serious.

I think that the U.S. government is on the right track and they have good ideas on controlling obesity. Some school cafeterias cook some really unhealthy stuff and a lot of food cans have unclear labels. Fixing these two problems might help control chilhood obesity. Having kids do more excercise in P. E. might also be a great way to control obesity.

Everybody knows that kids must run, play sports, ride their bicycle or swim,as a part of their education, rather than play videogames or just watch TV, so let them do these. Also instead of feedding them with pies or cakes give them a pair of fruits and do not let them dinner pasta, pizzas or burgers. These are the real clues to avoid obesity.

I think get school lunches to be healthier is a good idea, but it won’t be enough. Personally I think prices need to be lowered on healthy food. When I go to the store it’s cheaper to buy a bag of chips than fruit and with the economy the way it is we go for whatever is cheapest.

I think to limit children to be obese, the government should open up sports programs, and fitness centers for kids, and shut down things like, Burger King, and McDonalds. Also parents should put their kids on healthier diets

  372. Dylan

I think that kids should be excersizing more, but I also think it is up to the teachers to make sure that kids get more excersize time in. The teachers could make gym a period instead of a special that kids would have every 3 or 4 days. The teachers could also make more time in a lesson to walk around the class and learn or have a little time to excersize but still be learning.

I think that there should be no preheating school lunches. For i had many bad experiences with them. I think we should have a day for healthy eating. We should have also more time to eat lunch. As for me i get my food late and have to shove it into my mouth. This i think is causing me to be overweight. finnally we should be exercising more to burn off the food we ate at the end of the day.

i think that with one third of all american kids obeise we can have more activitys in the community and have more sports to do year round. maybe we can even have a kids community gym. kids watch tv to fill in some bored spaces. if most of the spaces were filled with activitys kids wont be watching tv as much. since im a kid i know that me and my friends get bored then watch tv or play video games. we love to play sports, but dont know where to play because we have no room to play. maybe more activitys could help us. our cafeterias dont have regular food they have processed food that comes in each morning frozen, these meals are disgusting and very bad for you, but some times they make delicious foods that are not bad for you and i think if they had more cafeteria workers they could make homemade food that can be good and nutritious.

I dont think them putting bigger labels on the food items will help because we teens dont even read them in the first place. Besides i think going outside and getting exercise would work alot better than portion sizes and healthy lunches at school ( i dont like them already)

    February 16, 2010 at 10:05 am |
  379. Chris

The best way to reduce obesity is for us kids to stop sitting around on our butts eating junk food all day long. The kids have also got to get involved in activities. It is not cookie monsters fault. He didn't make the kids get fat, so don't turn him into veggie monster. It's also not oreo's fault. It's the kids fault for eating to many oreos. in the end, it is the kids fault for eating the junk food.

Personally I beleive that child obesity may be a problem, but it is also a lifestyle. I do not find it fair to set a food limit for younger people. Some people are actually born bigger. Think about how articles like this make them feel. Bigger people need more food. Do they need to cut back for health reasons, yes, but that is there choice. People are going to live there life the way they want to. Although i do agree that school should enforse ealthier foods to help steer kids into the right foods to gorge on.

    February 16, 2010 at 10:13 am |
  384. Mattirose

i think that is has to be somewhat of the parents fault to to make all that food available for the kids they dont just get it from no where and at my school we have already slimmed down on food in the lunches and idk if that will even make a differance

Food labels should be emphasized, and made larger. by doing this kids will have a better chance of understanding the labels, and knowing how much they should eat/ if they should even eat it.

  388. John

kids and others are obese because all they do is drink and eat bad things, play video games and watch television. people need to go out and play with their friends or read a book, but then instead of going to meet face to face they go on face book ond other web stites

    February 16, 2010 at 10:24 am |
  389. Cesare

Well I think that they should do something about the food lables and healtier lunches at school because at my school, we get pizza and cheese fries. And there is so much grease on the that you can hold it up and watch it all just run off. But instead of limiting TV and stuff, parents should get their kids into something that is active and that they really enjoy doing.

    February 16, 2010 at 11:39 am |
  390. Ty

I think that makeing lables bigger is a waste of time and money along with cutting back on t.v what needs to be done is useing less grease on school food at my school i can litterly hold it up and watch the grease roll rite of it and make a puddle on my plate.

    February 16, 2010 at 12:00 pm |
  391. nick

Making the labels on food larger so it is easier to read may help but i beleive the real solution can be found in changing school lunches. Currently our school lunches have a lot of grease and usually don't taste that great, but if we had something like a salad bar everyday along with our other choices then people could have the choice to eat healthy. Also getting rid of chips in vending machines for healthier snacks.

    February 16, 2010 at 12:03 pm |
  392. Miranda

I think that parents should not buy snacks and fatty foods when going shopping. Find foods that will hide the vegetables that children will not eat. When cooking, try not to use alot of oils and grease. I do not think that the schools should start dieting their students. It does not help. The children just get angry and spend more money for snacks they do like eating. Of course, the food in the cafeteria should be healthy as well. Perhaps if parents would watch how their child eat then it would work out perfectly.

    February 16, 2010 at 12:05 pm |
  393. Kaylee

I think the #1 thing to make children slimmer is to eat healthier and eventually, if you keep it up, you will suddenly see a change and feel better about yourself. Sometimes you should have a person to help you get healthier. That person will have to make sure you do not eat too much junk food and not too fried foods. There should be a change in child obesity!

    February 16, 2010 at 12:11 pm |
  394. Kaly

I think you should put fake labels on healthier foods. That way the kids will eat better when they don't think they are. They might think it tastes bad, but they will still eat it. You might think it is lying to your child, but it will help them a lot. Usually kids would rather watch TV then playing outside and having FUN!!! They have to or go to a gym or they might be up to 450 lbs. when they grow up. That won't be fun because then they might go on Biggest Loser. People will make fun of them. The company of the Biggest Loser should make an episode for kids who are overweight. Labels should be bigger to read and I mean way bigger. Now a days little kids and adults don't care about what is in their food. There could be 470 calories in one meal and thay don't work it off. Then the calories burn to sugar which leads to fat. Well, try my ideas. The kids in my class always read food labels for two reasons. 1) They like to have fun. 2) They try to watch out at what they are eating. Well, BYE!! 🙂

i think those are all graet ways to get kids to slim down. i think you tell them what could happen to them so that they get encouraged. they should exersize more often. in school let them got to special classses where they only stand and exsersize while learning.

i think they should make food labels easier to read and should put suggestions on the labels like if you are 200 pounds don't drink cherry coke or dont eat a Twinkie

  398. Griffin

Young kids parents should pretend the tv is broken and make them go outside

I think the children's parent should always watch what their children/child are eating. This will make sure their kids aren't eatting unhealty with out permission. This will help alot.

one reason kids are getting obese and overweight is because of tv. ads are always showing food that look so good and it makes kids want that food. i think there should be less ads with foods. if they want to show their foods they should do it in magazines because kids watch too much tv. when they watch the ads they start to crave it because it looks so good. then they tell their parents they want it and their parent get it for them. that why there should be less ads with food.

Parnets need to quit listening to their kids whining and just feed them healthy food. Cost wise, healthy snacks, like raw carrots, are cheaper than a bag of chips. Oatmeal is cheaper for breakfast than packaged, sweetened cereal. Caffeinated beverages also make you really hungry when you crash and burn–and kids usually go for more simple carbs to satisify the hunger. Water is not only cheaper, it is way healthier and there's no caffeine in it.

    February 16, 2010 at 1:03 pm |
  402. Colby

I think a good way to motivate kids to loose weight is for TV channels to do what a certain kids channel does, a world wide day of play. Shut the programming off (for kids specifically) for 2 hours, and maybe kids will get up and play outside or with friends.

    February 16, 2010 at 2:16 pm |
  403. Basia

I think that it is true, but stupid. Some kids have problems with there weight and it is not there fault. Even kids who eat healthy, some are still overweight. A lot of times as they get older they slim down. The whole thing about healthier lunches, one word ew. Not because healthy food, no one eats school lunches. They usually are cold, look nasty, smell funny. That's why usually kids go to the vending machines and get chips and a soda. School lunches are just nasty.

I know several good recipes that helped me get over my aversion to vegetables

I think that it is the parents fault that the child is so obese. The parents are the ones that provide the food, therefore if the kids don't have access to the food, they probably won't eat as much of it. Outside exercise and more activity could also keep the childs mind off of eating, and more on doing something else.

    February 16, 2010 at 3:36 pm |
  416. Ben

I think to make kids healthier the schools need to make healthy choices at lunch available and to make sure the kids have an opportunity to excersise during the day. It's also up to the parents to make sure their kids excersise and have healthy foods in the house.

To reduce childhood obesity, the goverment could help encourage parents to feed their kids healthier and lower salt, sugar, and fatty foods. This would also help the entire family's health as well as the kid's. Also, schools could have more gym class and open gyms so kids aren't sitting in classes all day. Schools could, as well, provide foods that are healthy and good tasting.

the things that they are talking about doing are unreasonable, kids don't even read the labels on food. the government should start a new program that children can join to get slimmer. it's just like sylvan, they can have a personal trainer and can keep track of how much weight they loose in a week or so, and they can get prizes or treats once they complete their goal. who cares if they get a treat once in a while, they deserve it!

Personally I don't think the government should be trying to control the diets of all the obese kids in America. I think it should be the parents' concern if their kids are not health. Plus, all these changes are going to cost a lot, and the nation is already having enough financhial problems.

I honestly think all the healthy alternatives in schools are to blame. Because if kids can't have their sweets at school...what do they do? They chow down on candy and soda at home.

  426. Mitchell

I think the best thing way to reduce childhood obesity is to teach kids that it is important to eat well-balanced meals so you won't eat snacks throughout the day.

    February 16, 2010 at 7:59 pm |
  427. Ashley

The only reason kids are obese is because all of the unhealthy food is cheaper than the healthy food. With the economy now, people don't have a lot of money and they won't buy the higher priced food. If they lowered the prices of healthy food, and raised the prices of unhealthy food the they would see a drastic change in childhood obesity.

    February 16, 2010 at 8:18 pm |
  428. Arthur

Obesity sometimes come from playing too many video games or watch television. Kids get distracted, and sometimes doesn't pay attention to what they are eating. It may be for teens and adults as well. If they start using their time in exercising rather than play Halo or watching Spongebob, then the obesity level would drop in the U.S.

    February 16, 2010 at 9:38 pm |
  429. Danielle

In my opinion, this would be a step forward, but since obesity has been around for thousands of years it is impossible to completely eradicate it. Still, every difference counts. But one must keep in mind that everyone chooses their own path.

    February 16, 2010 at 9:55 pm |
  430. Emily

I think that childhood obesity shouldn't be happening. Schools should give more healthier food and lots of opportunities to be active. Parents should not allow their kid to sit in front of the computer/TV all day. Being active could help improve this a lot.

How about reducing fat contained in junk food?
If junk food companies really consider their clients, thy should reduce fat or calories contained in their product.

i think exercise is very important for children. Exercise make us healthier and also prevent obesity
so, government let school extend more time for physical education class. and also make more club for lose weight.
and public service annoucement let obesity children know how important keep the balance weight.,

Kids are getting obese because of what their
schools sells for lunch like chili hotdogs and
potatoes every week. They should have more
    fruits choices and vegetable choices.

I think the most effective way to reduce the child obesity is to increase P.E. and make it more strict to make those children (students) to use their muscels more than before. Also, parents may have to try buying vegetables than meat for their children and should force them to eat them even if they deny.
Furthermore, schools should teach children 'how to choose the right food'. Earlier they learn, healthier they'd be.

Obesity is hard to change from a habit. I believe it is your life chioce, but we should try to change that. People who are obsese have to try to change their choices. Many people don't care because it occurs when you play games or watch tv. People need to exercise. I would try to change that by making some type of club for fitness.

    February 17, 2010 at 12:24 pm |

I think that people are over weight by playing too much games and watching too much TV. That can effect their health and blood pressure by going lower, which is bad. They should satrt eating more food with not too much fat and more with protien. They should also be outside at least 80% of the time in a day. That would definetly help others.

I think that the obese kids should learn how to read foodables to destingish the healther food, exersize more, and eat healthy like eating your fruits and occationally eat fatty foods.

Make food labels easier to read, make school lunches healthier, and limit the amount of TV kids watch.

    February 17, 2010 at 12:42 pm |
  444. Neerav

It doesn't matter whether a child eats a lot or not. They eat what they want. If we make healthy school lunches or enforce things on them, they'll groan and whine even more. What we should do is encourage more outdoor activities, getting friends together and just play some sports in the local park, basically they will enjoy themselves outdoors.

    February 17, 2010 at 1:26 pm |
  445. annette

I think that school should make lunches and breakfast healthier. Another thing that could be affective is that some t.v shows that some kids watch should be turned off for about an hour everyday and to encourage kids to go outside and play.

Like most of us have stated before child obesity is mainly a problem when we get home cuz that's where we spend most of the time even though we spend a pretty long time in school we don't eat as much as at our houses.

    February 17, 2010 at 5:16 pm |
  449. Katie

This is a hard issue. In the U.S. most people are obese. However, kids are influenced by their friends and parents. For example, a student who has more obese friends is more likely to become obese. Likewise, kids who have obese family members will more likely be obese. But it all boils down to what we choose. As a far as communities go the schools could offer more fruits and vegetables. At my middle school, I often hear my friends commenting on the fact that the fruits and veggies are split onto the same " column/row," but there are 2 "columns/rows" of french fries. Schools could fix this easily, all that has to happen is they bring in more fruits and veggies than fries or desserts. I also think that schools should get kids more active, bring their metabolisms up. I do not believe that schools or the government should be able to control how much time anyone spends watching t.v. I was unaware that this country was becoming a communism=).

It seems to me like the best solution is to do what many chinese schools do, and that's make kids do a variety of exercises in the morning for anywhere between 20 minutes to a whole hour. That is how China manages to keep their kids healthy, and fit. I just honestly don't see how it could work out here, since we've fallen far behind many Asian countries in grade school academics that we begin to focus too much on academics, when the true answer to solve that is to make kids exercise, raise their self esteem beyond eating at McDonalds, and make them realize that eating six cheeseburgers a day and playing video games can't help them get smarter, or accomplish anything, for that matter.

    February 17, 2010 at 6:44 pm |
  451. maggie

I don't think you can change school luches anymore, at our school in Ohio they are healthy but discusting. No one ends up eating the healthy lunch just the food sold seperetly. Another thing is kids could just bring their lunch and their lunch may be filled with junk food. You can't force kids to buy school lunch or to eat the food they buy,Most kids don't!

    February 17, 2010 at 7:43 pm |
  452. Stephen

I think that the schools should limit or have no "EXTRAS." Kids waist their money or better yet parents money and most of the choices are unhealthy. Also we should have more time to exercise in school instead of only having about a half an hour.

    February 17, 2010 at 9:09 pm |
  453. Dan

Coming from a kids prospective, kids should be encouraged more by parents, school teachers, and other public authority to get active and make those healthy choices. To encourage them that being healthy is important for the body and mind.

Obesety for kids is just ridiculous! Its both the child and the parents resposibility to know whats right to eat and whats wrong.Once you get addicted to eating junk food, there is really no going ack unless you have support from family and friends.

I think children on obesety should either join a weight loss program with children who have the same problem as you do.You always still have your friends and family with you, too. You can also join a sport such as gymnastics, karate, or even yoga.I also think your parents should pay attention to the food you eat.Kids are like babies because you have to pay attention to what their putting in your mouths.

I think the best way to stop childhood obesity is by teaching kids about what could happen if they continue to gain so much weight. This would help because if kids were more aware of what they were doing to their bodies, they would stop.

  458. Hars

The fast paced lives we live, the unhealthy foods, the lack of well balanced meals, and lack of activity outside have played a role in children being over weight.

    February 18, 2010 at 11:25 am |
  459. Nicole

I think that you really cant change what the kids eat that it is there choice. Some of the kids could be the way they are because of the way that their parents eat or what they buy. You could change the school lunches but that dont mean that they are going to lose weight. I am not be critical about them. I am saying you can make school lunches healthy but when they are at home they might eat all junk food. Also to me i think that it would be the parents choice for children to watch less televison because the government cant really change that. This is what i have to say on kids being over weight.

It's not the child's fault...It's the parent's fault. I'm not trying to sound mean but it is. The parents are letting them eat and stuff themselves. If the parents say no and then help them exercise. The child will be mad at you at first(all children are) but they will thank you in the future!

I think T.V. and video games are a big part of the problem.

Being a junior in high school and having moved about 6 times over the course of 5 years I can tell you that this is partly schools fault(but more on the parents).Schools will not allow the gruesome images and videos of what people go through while being severly overweight.SCHOOL IS A PLACE OF EDUCATION!Teach!Show videos such as "Super Size Me".After I saw that, it shaped my life!I run every other day and eat very well.I watch the carbs and calories I take in.I have lost over 30 pounds since I became concerned.I now weigh 125!Now I am working with my parents.
Onto the parents.Take more control over what your children are eating and taking in.Energy drinks, fast food, candy, popcorn, starches, fats, and oils are not appropriate.BTW 5 hour energy shots may give you a boost but your MAKING YOURSELF FAT!Educate yourselves! You don't need someone else doing the work for you! Also getting a good nights rest(yes more than a couple hours)will boost your energy more than any energy drink will!I have been there and I am part of this generation of high school kids.I know what I am talking about.

The formula for losing weight is quite simple: burn more calories than you eat. Children these days are eating more, but not exercising enough. They need to get off the gaming systems and computers!

Chiildhood obesity is a big porblem that need to be adressed...but not by the government. It \should be an idividual choice on how to take action. I think that if people could find ways to make excersise more funpeople would do it more often. Eating healthy is hard. If we could find a way to make healthy food more appealing people would eat more of them. These are not always easy tasks, but if the goverment is concerned about our nation's youth then they will perservere to get what needs to be done, done.

My mother is a personal trainer, I'm a vegetarian, I play lacrosse and Competitive Cheer leading. You have to guess I'm not obese. I've seen really bad situations of childhood obesity and I think it needs to stop. I'd love to see [fast food restaurants] shut down, school offer healthier foods, and parents step up and teach there kids how to eat proportions and healthy food only when they're hungry, parents also need to teach there kids to be active in a sport they can stick to. Maybe if people have a loved one or they are obese themselves; should stop complaining and do something about it! Don't blame how you were raised or where you live. There is always a way.

Children should really watch thier weight.I am experinced i was over wieght when i was 4 but my mother hid the junkfood and all i did for 2 hours was extersixe. i would play with Charlie (my bunny but he died a few years ago) , i laso would fly my kite untill I was in the right range.
That was very hard because all i could eat instead of icecream on a hot day i had broccolii EWWWWWWWWWWWWWW! by the way.
i now read food lables and i only have 1 icecream cone.
some children hear thier parents saying they are trying to loose wieght and they think in thier minds "Am I FAT!!!!!!!!!!!" thats the children who thinks and lays off the junk food for a wile.
other children think "oh wow my mom/dad is Fatt hehehehe" they are the over wieghted ones. before you pick up that bag of high colestrol THINK "S THIS THE RIGHT THING TO BE EATIN OR SHOULD I EAT A FRUIT OR VETGABLE"...
    this measage is for adalts
If your child is over wieght give them money to extersize
please for the heath and well being of your child

I think childhood obesity is a pressing matter in todays society. Children should be excercising AT LEAST 30 minutes a day. With a healthy diet and making good choices we can help decrease childhood obesity. Remember anything in moderation is ok.

I think childhood obesity is a huge problem in America. I think a good way to reduce that is to give kids smaller portions and cut down snacks. Also I think we should teach kids how to stop eating when they aren't hungry anymore. Children also need to be more active so they can burn more calories and be more healthy.

    February 19, 2010 at 10:57 am |
  475. Cody

Alright...this problem could be easily corrected. To loose wait or stay in shape, there are requirements such as: eating healthy and exercising. There are more and more kids that sit around and do nothing at all. They dont play sports, work, or do anything to get any type of exercising.Kids need to be more active. It is their own responsibility, but their parents should help their children with these weight problems.

  476. Rachel

I think it’s our food we are giving our children. These days when people go out to eat they go to places like McDonalds or Burger King, which are not the healthiest places to eat. I think we should give kids healthier foods to eat, and when you go out to eat at McDonalds or something get them a happy meal with apples instead of fries. Also make them go outside a couple hours a day. My parents made me do that and I would be mad at first, but then I would just go play. Even a little bit of exercise a day would help out a lot.

    February 19, 2010 at 11:03 am |
  477. Melissa

I believe that they key to losing weight and living a healthy lifestyle is burning more calories than we eat. We should go do physical activities like walking or biking versus sitting on the couch watching tv and playing video games. This would make children more active and burn more calories. I think that staying active wil keep will help the children digest their food instead of their body automatically storing it as fat. I also believe that children should be more aware of what they are eating instead of not even looking at nutritional information. This would keep them from eating junk food that is contributing to their weight gain.

I think that the parents should stop giving their kids chocolate but its okay on the holidays. You could give them a carrot or something else that is good for them. Chocolate is okay every now and then but not every single day and they should take out the soda machines in schools

I have personally observed myself that most obese childern have obese parents. Parents influence their children in many ways. I know my dad encourages me in my sports and that had contributed in the healthy life Im living today. When I have children I will encourage them to get involved in their school sports as well as making sure they are aware of unhealthy food habbits that will effect them in the long run. Parents wonder why their children are unhealthy and its obivous that the parents wondering are normally obese themselves. If they take care of themselves first they will be doing more for their family in the long run as well.

Childhood obesity is definitely a continuous and growing probem, however, I believe a big cause of childhood obesity isn't necessarily about how much they eat, but how little physical activity kids these days participate in. We need to encourage exercise even more along with parents stepping in and monitoring what their children eat, how long they watch T.V. and play video games.

    February 19, 2010 at 11:07 am |
  481. Megan

Childhood obesity is a major problem for our country. It would be a lot easier to be healthy if the healthy food was as cheap as junk food. Some people can't afford to buy fresh fruit or vegetables or whole grain options. Also, parents need to limit their kids time in front of the tv. Sitting on the couch isn't exercise. I think wii fit and other exercise-promoting video games are a great idea, kids already love video games, why not make them healthy while they play them? There are several things that we all could do to be healthier and help the children in our lives be healthy too.

    February 19, 2010 at 11:08 am |
  482. cody

i think that childhood obesity is mostly caused by the parents, they are the ones that provide us with our food and they are the ones that should be careful about what their children eat. Its not always the child's fault that they are obese, they need to be taught what "eating healthy" is at a young age, so NO i don't think that it is always the childs fault

    February 19, 2010 at 11:15 am |
  483. Harley

I think that they should hide there junk food so they dontget so fat. Or dont buy any junkfood AT ALL! its simple they shouldnt eat junk food and they should get some exercise every once in a while. plus they should eat vegatbles and fruits os they can stay strong and healthy.

    February 19, 2010 at 2:36 pm |

I think we should reduce the amount of tv we watch, because some kids spend more than four hours sitting on the couch watching tv and doing absolutly nothing, but that.

child obesey is one of the hardest things for kids to over come so we as people need to help them to over come that by fiving them less junk food and moer more vegies and fruits. and more exersise

  487. Danica

I agree that making food labels easier to read and lunch choices heathier would make the kids less obese. I know that if i had better lunches or heathier things to chose from,I would definatly slim down. Maybe if my school only sold fries on friday then kids would only eat something unheathly one day a week. Kid's can't make heathly choices on their own,and if they changed the menu's it would better everyone.

    February 19, 2010 at 3:19 pm |
  488. Rachel

Many children dont get enough exercise because of staying inside and not going out. They need to excersise and eat heathier. Kids are eating unheathy and not getting enough exercise. I suggest joining sports teams and trying to get others to join to. This will impact you and others. School lunches dont help either, we need heathier choices to choose from to help us make better decisions.

I think obesity in children is wrong because there parentsare not teaching them to eat food in quantity and because of this they will keep eating and could become self concious of there wait. Also because of this they could be picked on and as a result of being picked on they could commit suicide or they could just die at a young age becuase of there wait

Child obesity is crazy these days, but for teens like us we should practice a hobby or a after school team like track, soccer, basketball. And for people that are home schooled should try to walk on a daily bases for like say, homework

    February 19, 2010 at 4:57 pm |
  491. Lily

I think that kids should slim down on the fast food and if they eat fast food they should wait 10 minutes and play for at LEAST 30 min. – 2 hours. This year I have only had 2 soda's and 1 meal of fast food. I think that kids should do more things outside than watching television

    February 19, 2010 at 5:22 pm |
  492. Jay

Obesity is a huge problem. People need to eat healthier, exercise more, and try to work out.

    February 19, 2010 at 5:43 pm |
  493. Jessica

I think schools should provide more sports and let all the kids that try out on at LEAST one team. People sometimes say its the parents fault that the kids are fat in some cases thats true but kids should learn how to read food labels! I learned in health class how to read food labels, so now I can watch how many carbs, sodium, and sugar I take in. Kids should be exercising 1 hour a day! To me that is not alot but for some kids thats like asking them to jump off a cliff. To me all you have to do is something you enjoy, like riding a bike, or jumping on a tramopline. If you are having fun one hour will go by fast.

    February 19, 2010 at 6:14 pm |
  494. robby

i think it should be the parents that should tell the kids how to slim down on the calories and the best suggestion i would make is let them do a sport or a outdoor activitie that the would like to do them selves and at their own pace

losing weight can be hard just close up your snack closet and eat real meals you also have to get out and get exercise at least 60 minutes a day the "lets move" campaign will help kids to get exercise but eating healthy is also a factor.

Even if schools did cut down, the kids would just eat even more at home. It's up to the parents. Making food labels easier to read wouldn't help. it has to do with the obese person and how much they care about losing weight.

I partly feel it is the schools fault. The school's should greatly increase the schools physical period for more than just 30 to 45 minutes. Physical Education should also involve more cardio, than anything else, as research has shown it has many benefits. (higher self-esteem, average bmi, and more concentration in school).

I think that the school should serve healthier food instead of hamburgers and hotdogs and french fries. A salad bar, fruit, vegetables, and sandwhiches should be nice! Also, since kids like desert the school could give one cookie/brownie to each person. In gym teachers should talk about the importance of fitness once every two months and have a tougher curriculm.

It should be up to the parents to choose the foods that the kids should eat, you should try to start off at a young age by making them eat healty food. Parents shouldnt buy the junk food it would be more tempting for the kids to eat make them do a sport or family activity outside.

I think fast food places should be shut down so people can stop eating the fattining and unhealthy foods. Without those fast food places...children will be able to slim down because they might stop eating all that fat and unhealthy grease. Also, i believe schools should have longer recesses and physical education classes. With longer physical education and longer recess children can work out more and loose weight.

    February 22, 2010 at 12:17 pm |
  502. Emily

I think that children should eat halthier foods than they are because a lot like to eat out or go to fast food places. There are other things than junk food to eat that taste really good. They should eat junk food one in a while not all the time. Sometimes schools feed the kids unhealthy stuff which gets them hooked up on the junk like icecream or pizza.

  503. Kurt

Schools should implement a mandatory P.E. period (at least 3 periods per week). Exercise is the best way to burn those calories, and the children of today need a little nudge to kind of 'force' them to do something outside (instead of doing everything indoors...).
That's what they do here in South Korea. It also let the students relax a little and take their minds of the sometimes 'stressful' workload, which is necessary.

This is a very serious topic because of the fact that it means a lot more heart attacks and internal problems for the children with obesity are in dier need of help to exceed and go beyond that to be healthier. Steps to do that are is to get people that will actualy stay there to help them exersize and no give up to easy

I think that if you limit the time you spand watching TV would help because then you would be more that likely to go play outside and get some exercise.

I think the parents play a big part in this problem because they let their kids watch a lot of TV. Most people eat when they watch TV and the less TV the kid watches the less food will be eaten.

I think childhood obesity is due to the over-advertisement of fattening foods. It is also due to the fact that some kids are lazy, and not brought up by there parents to work hard.

    February 24, 2010 at 4:35 pm |

Putting bigger labels will probably not work because people probably know what they are eating. If they don't know what they are eating, they probably noticed they are fat.

I think the most effective way to reduce child obesity is to redo the school cafeteria lunch menu, and make it so the food is more healthy. For example a school could have fry fridays so the kids are not eating fries every day. Another suggestion is to have more choices in the salad bar part of the cafeteria.

everyone should jest try to loose it.Also schools could have heathly foods. Also if you ahve a soda machene take it out of the school. Also talk to parents so they know what ios good to feed your kids. Then if we stick to that plan it will help but we will need more ides and thats why everyone needs to put ther comments on and then we will solve this the right way

I do not believe that school lunches should be reduced they are already small enough! The real problem is what kids take in after school. Parents getting home from work and think they can just go to a fast food restaraunt and get done with it easy... if kids eat the school lunches now, have a good nutritional dinner, and take in a little less candy and soda they'll be better off... You dont have to take anything out of your diet just limit yourself to how much of it you eat!...

I think that parents should cut down on the potato chips and soda and have their kids excercise for at least 30 minutes a day. Get them Wii Fit or something!

  518. Kit

I think obesity happens because of what the child grows up with. Most likely if the are over weight then there is a chance that the child is too. Parents see how junk food is cheaper when in reality it affects your health. Kids love junk food but they dont know what will happen if they eat it all the time.

I think mabey we should all get healther lunches, like no more greasy pizza, chips, cookies, or icecream. Kids are buying 3 cookies every day! Waste of money and their health.

I think that child obesity should be stopped. U.S should have longer time in gym and sports teams in school so that kids will use their spare time exercising. Child obesity can effect your life forever if you don't stop it.

I dont think bthere is a truly effective way to end childhood obesity because it is the childs choice what to eat and no matter what adults do, the kid ultamately decides what to put in its body. One way to reduce it, would be to stop offering such fattening foods in school cafeterias.

    February 26, 2010 at 11:44 am |

agreed. schools don't seem to realize this becuase we can buy like 3 cookies a day, with fries. it is all very bad for you, that is why i don't drink soda or eat fastfood. Wendys, McDonalds and french fries have seemed to be everywhere. eat healthy, it actually wont kill you. Being athletic could be fun too. Just go out and run or play a game, its easier that debating whether you should ir not. effort goes a long way. government really needs to begin to do something. thanks

I heard an interesting idea a while back. We could tax food producers if it meets the standards of producing, unhealth foods. This would cause them to raise their prices, and people would buy less of these unhealthy products.

The government could tax unhealth food producers if they meet a set standard which says they are producing unhealthy foods. If we do this, the prices of junk food would rise and people would buy it less.

Children should be able to get fat if they want. But, they should have some guidance in a health class where the teacher tells what is healthy and what is unhealthy. Us kids should have access to fatty and unhealthy food, but also have access to healthy food.

I think people just need to watch what they eat. If they eat a lot, they get fatter. I agree that we should make food labels bigger and easier to read, but I still don't think that will help much more. People usually don't even look at the food labels even if they CAN find them.

I feel that kids should be taught early on what foods are bad for them and what foods are good for them. Parents should give their children a diet plan as they grow up, Parents, your kid can't eat bad food if you don't buy bad food! You should encourage your children to play outside or to exercise, don't give in to temper tantrums and let them play video games for two hours a day, keep yourself involved in your child's life, interact and play with them. It can keep them healthier and happier in the long run.

childhood obisity is a huge problem, some people say blame the parent for letting their kids eat the junk food some say its the kids fault others the companies that supply the stuff.these are all good answers but your apperince makes no difference when your a kid it only starts to hit when your older so at that age the only thing your concered about is taste not your body and how the food reacts with youself.

    March 1, 2010 at 9:04 pm |
  538. Kate

I think that schools should have healthier lunches. Making food labels easier to read and limiting the amount of TV kids watch would be a wasted effort because most kids just ignore the food label and eat until they're full and TV doesn't make kids fat, overeating unhealthy foods does. Limiting food portions is a better idea than making food labels easier to read and limiting the amount of TV kids watch but the problem is not just that kids are overeating, its also that they're eating unhealthy foods. Kids could be eating regular portions of unhealthy foods and still become overweight were one the other hand, kids can be over eating healthy foods and still be skinny, so I think getting healthier lunches is a better solution that anything.

It is kind of weird seeing many kids that aren't in shape. However, usually child obesity is caused because it is the kids parents choice of the kids diet. I think that all kids should be fit so that ALL kids can be energetic instead of staying in the house eating junkfood infront of the T.V.

    March 3, 2010 at 12:16 pm |

i think that schools should have healthier lunches.also i think that if a kid is overweight they should get active and not sit down watching t.v all the time.also if the house that they are living in has alot of unhealthy food most likely they are going to eat that unhealthy food.but if there is healthy food and not that much to choose from that would be better.

being overweight is a result of freedom in America. If people want to be fat, let them be fat. It is none of your or anyone else's business. food labels are easier to read than stop signs. We don't need to make them any easier. I eat a hamburger and french fries everyday at school. I'm in very good shape (3 miles in 21 minutes). School lunches aren't the problem. the other "suggestions" are parents choices, not the governments. I think people should just worry about themselves.

In [my] state...parents and education officials alike complain about children's obesity, yet we students...do not have any physical activity time. We have P.E. (physical education) only 7 weeks of a year. Everyone needs at least 30 minutes everyday to stay healthy and we are not getting that.

I as an ex fatty believe that one of the main causes of overweight children is one fatty foods and soda and two no exercise. Kids that do nothing but sit on there couches and play video games are more likely to gain extra weight. And parents that don’t make there kids do anything besides sit around are to blame just as much as the kids.

I think one of the hugest factors of obesity is all of the fast- food places. Almost all of the food is horrible for you. I think trans-fats shouldn't be allowed. If schools also improved the heath of the cafeteria food. Sadly most children's obesity is because of their parents. Parents need to be educated about haelthy foods more then the children.

    March 7, 2010 at 10:43 am |
  551. Zienab

It's not the childrens'ault! It's the fault of their uneducated parent feeding them all the junk. Maybe if their parents put effort in caring for their kids' health our generation won't be overweight.

I think that school lunches should be healthier. I also think that if popular shows should express how important it is to go outside and excercise, maybe they could take a break daily and stop shows for like an hour so that kids go outside and excercise. I think the best way is the support that people should give these kids. Say you have a friend that is over weight, you should encourage him to play a sport, eat healthy, or even excercise daily.

    March 8, 2010 at 1:40 pm |
  559. regan

I don't think making food lables easier to read would do anything because they would just ignore them. So I think that limiting food portions would work but you wouldn't want them to be hungry so mabey making the meals healthier and more effective for hunger.

I think what people should do is to get the younger aged kids to slimd down would be to tell them what could happen to them or have create a fitness club for over weighed children. Aniother way to make them slim down is to have some friends excersie with them or make them eat healthier foods.

    March 8, 2010 at 1:44 pm |

Now, Linzy I agree with you and I don't on the fast food part. Fatty fast food places are a big problem. Including Mcdonalds, Wendy's, Arby's, Culver's and more. But our family owns many Subway restaurants and Subway isn't fatty at all. It actually helps you with your diet. I think that these fast food places do need to stop putting so much fatty options on the menu and put more healthy options on the menu. I also agree with Linzy on the cafeteria part. I think that alot of school cafeterias give non-healthy foods and that doesn't help the child's weight! I also think that the parents should give the child healthy foods and go to the school and tell the school their concerns on the unhealthy food that they are feeding their children. Also parents should encourage their children to excersize! If the child is overweight, make him/her excersize! Make them join a sport at school or join an excersize class and take your kid(s) along!

I think one of the main causes of childhood obesity is because of not wanting to play outside. My dad runs a lot. He considers it as a break from his life. Of course, running isn't the only sport that can cause this. There are other individual activities that can do this as well, such as bicycling or swimming.

    March 8, 2010 at 9:39 pm |
  575. Michael

There are many ways to reduce childhood obesity, some are simple and others are more difficult to implement. Things like cost and easy of use make it difficult to change how children eat, how active they are and how they perceive physical fitness. Reducing a child's lunch might not be the best way and providing school cafeteria's with healthy foods can become rather expensive. However, changing a child's perspective might be a better way to teach them about how to 'live' healthy from the start and not try to 'fix' their eating habits. A child who has grown up eating whatever they want is not going to just give up eating what they love to become healthy. It doesn't work that way. Start at the beginning, early childhood, and teach them not to love junk food and we might get somewhere. This might not fix the ones who are already obese, but it will help prevent future children from living an unhealthy life.

To help stop childhood obesity I think the schools should change the food they serve. Alot of school lunchs are full of greasey fries and pizza. First of all, I think childhood obesity is something the parents should deal with but if the school has to get in on it to I guess they should make school portions healthier but not limit the amount because I AM A HUNGRY GIRL!!! And I'm not overweight or anything like that. And sometimes kids are born that way but slim down when they get into middle school. The kids could also try participating in sports clubs more too but it's not my place to say. It's really about the kid and how much effort they put into it.

I beleive that parents should force there kids to play outside for thirty minutes or more because most larger kids don't play as much or aren't active.

When me and my mom go to the grocery store, we only buy healthy food because some junk foods are addictive. Like ice cream is really fattening, but addicting for everyone so my mom usually buys fat free ice cream. I think everyone should start watching what they eat because its very easy to get fat.

I think that the most effective thing that could be done to help prevent childhood obesity would be to feed kids healthier food at school. If you do a little research, you'll learn that school lunches really aren't good for you.

Obesity is a really big problem that should be addressed. The government should dedicate laws that put rules on the amounts artificial preservitives allowed in foods and more advertisements should give obese children positive messages on how they can lose weight.

First of all, I think that childhood obesity is something the parents should deal with but if the school has to get in on it to I guess they should make school portions healthier but not limit the amount. School food is very very greasy and unhealthy expesealy for kids. A nother way to keep form getting fat is playing outside or phisical activety, like swimming, biking, hiking or just going to the gym. So that is what i think about the weight issue in the U.S.

The parents are the biggest factor in this. They need to get their kids into something exercising and that the child loves to do. Second thing is the schools need to make better food for the kids. At our school, you can hold the pizza and watch the grease run off. Plus another idea is to put tvs or games/music on workout equiptment allowing kids to do what they want but still are working out.

I believe it's not the schools responsibility to reduce children's weight, but the parent's. They should encourage their children to be more active or encourage them to eat more fruits and vegetables, not reduce their meal amounts or reduce their amount of time to watch t.v. If they aren't watching t.v. that doesn't automatically make them go play outside. The kids could easily go read a book, which is good, but doesn't reduce their weight.

There are plenty to blame in this case. The parents are first. They should keep track of their child(ren)'s weight. They should not allow junk foods in their homes. Next is the child themself. If you're old enough, try out for a sports team, just ride your bike, or even go for a walk. There is no excuse. Lastly, the schools. Offer healthier choices. Put in a salad bar, for example. It's worth it. Ban soda at school and get rid of the "school store" as most schools have. Or if not, make the school store offer only healthy alturnatives. These are all easy fixes if you think about it.

I think people should eat healthier but the most important thing is to be active in sports or just exercise

In our Debate class, we debated whether or not junk food should be banned in schools. The biggest reason we should is that childhood obesity is rocketing. Lots of people, like anorexics, think that starving themselves is the answer, but it's not. If children (and their parents) want to cut down on obesity, and if teenagers want to be skinnier, the answer is healthy eating and excercise. That's all there is to it.
