Meatless Mondays?

One of the questions I thought of when I first saw this report was, "How is it offering more choices if a school is actually taking meat off the Monday menu?"  And my guess is that doing so will increase awareness about vegetarian options - and that students are going to get more of those on Mondays.

There's no denying that corn, green beans and fruits are good for you, and the vegetarian chili that the school is offering definitely has protein.  But so do beef, pork and poultry, and there's an argument to be made for always including meats too.

Tell us what your argument is:  Would you be willing to go vegetarian at school one day a week, or do you think meat should always be on the menu?

With the way our meat looks in our school lunches, Meatless Monday should be Meatless Everyday.

I think going vegitarian wouldn't be a good idea. If the schools still keep meat as part of the meal on Mondays, it would be fine, but some people actually really like meat. Meat should at least be on the menu somewhere everyday.

personaky i would never go vegitarian because no meat = no protien and you must eat meat to stay alive its nature...

I'm from Korea. so as you know we don't have meat in our lunch very often. But in my opinion, I think it's a very GOOD idea. Because if
you eat too much meat (if you are not vegetarian.) you get really
really fat. And it's not meatless everyday! so i guss I'm agreeing
    with that.

I think that on meatless mondays, rather than serving no meat, schools should serve biological meat, because it is eco friendly and it leaves students the choice on what they would like to eat.

Oh no I don't!!! Not that I LOVE meat But when meatless monday come

I think that if parents are upset with the school lunch menus then they should bring there own lunches, besides the lunches are offering protein in a different form.

They should have at least a little bit of meat offered every day, maybe just cut back on the amount. There shouldn't be a day when it isn't available. They could just offer more vegetarian choices every day too. Kids like the freedom of choosing what they like. If there is nothing that they like on the menu, they may end up going without lunch.

I think there should be meat AND vegtables. Both are good for you and both will help kids like me have enough energy to participate in class. At my school we have both fruit, vegatables, and meat each day.

All school lunches should have a variety of food and drinks. Not everyone likes the same food. Some people are vegetarians and others don't like vegetables at all. Our middle and high schools provide a choice of salad bar or a hot tray lunch. This leaves most students with an acceptable option for lunch.

    Hey Carl,

Although our school does't serve school lunches, I think that encouraging kids to go vegetarian for a day is a good idea. I say this becuz the meat at schools can be gross and have a lot of fat. Meat is an important source of protein but it should be eaten in moderation. As long as the schools are providing an alterante source of protein with the vegetarian meal it will be a good healthy alternative.

I think that they should let the kids and parents choose, like have a vote thing or something. I think that it should be up to the people not the school district or the state. If the kids are the ones eating it then they should be able to have the most say In It.

i think that schools should offer everything so that students have their own choices on what they eat. they should have it all available, some students already do not eat meat. they should have it set up like a buffet. offer a variety of things.

I think it would be better to have the meat served all week. Some students never get there protein at home and school lunch is were most of the students get there protein. Serve meat all week !!!!

We would be willing to go vegetarian if it was optional. There should be meat as one option and vegetarian as another option.

i really don't think that meatless mondays are a good idea....kids need protien and the only way we can usually get that is through meat...maybe we could do veggie burgers instead of hamburgers!

  21. Miss Spaanstra's 4th Grade

In our school, we are lucky to have choices. Each day we have a meat and vegetable option. Students wishing to go meatless can choose vegetarian selections any day of the week.On the other hand, students still need a meat option because some of us are very picky. Therefore, we are not willing to go meatless.

I think that the students should have a choice, because they still need their protein. There should be an option to not eat meat once a week.

In my opinion, Meatless Mondays are an awesome idea. Like the interviewed parent said, it's giving her child a chance to experience something different. The meat producers need to realize that it's only one day of the week, and their argument falls short. Yes, maybe some children are not supplied with the adequate amount of protein, but that doesn't mean they can't find protein in other places on Meatless Mondays. Peanut butter and pretty much any type of bean supply protein as well as meat.
Also, I think that limiting students' diets is a great idea. In my previous high school that was never addressed. It was sad to see students with weight issues going up for more food, and nothing getting done about it. Again, I realize that some children do not have much at home, but there should still be a limit.

We think that both sides have a good point. On one hand, having a vegetarian menu for one day would help students make healthier choices and help the environment. On the other hand, there are some people that think that it's up to the individual to choose what they want to eat and should have meat as an option to eat if they want to do so.

I believe that they should give us the junky food were going to eat it anyways. If the parents dont like it then they should send their kids with lunch. They also should make an effort to prepare better food. The parents dont care because they're not the ones eating it.

i think that meatless mondays is good for the kids at the schools and but where is the protein coming from that what they should start doing is put some kind of protein is the food

I think that it's cool that their is a choice with nutrition, but at the same time, it's the most ridiculous choice in the school system. Kids have the right to choose what they want to eat, but at the same time, have the choice of nutritious foods. I believe every kid has the right to make their own decisions, yes the not meat monday is pretty cool, but at the same time, they should be able to have their protein. at least a little of it a day. or bring in the veggie burgers. every kid should have their nutrition and their protein.

I believe that going Vegetarian once a week will be good for schools and students. However, if there is an uproar about school lunchs being the only source of protein for students, then they should continue to offer the meat on the side, but also continue to offer a Vegetarian alternative for those who wish to try it.

Meatless Mondays are bad because not everyone likes vegetables. Students should have a choice. Our schools have at least a salad bar and a hot tray option. This gives students a chance to go a day without meat if that is what they want to do.

We think that the Meatless Mondays are just fine, as long as the school hasn't gone completely vegetarian. We don't think PETA should be promoting vegetarianism in schools with non-information.

There is nothing wrong with promoting a healthy lifestyle. But singling meat out is unfair and not wise. PETA's goals are politically motivated not nutritionally motivated.

I understand the goal behind Meatless Mondays, but you can't force someone to not eat meat for one day. It is a clear personal choice and it should be offered no matter what. If kids want to eat vegan for a day, then they can choose to do so; simple as that.

Our middle school social studies class in Cascade Locks, Oregon mostly agrees that one day a week with a meatless menu is a good option. However, there are a few who say the meat in our diet provides the vitamins and minerals and protien needed for our bodies. One student suggested bringing your own lunch on those days if your opposed to the alternative diet.

Students should have a choice. If you don’t serve meat, students would need to be given a larger portion of food because it takes more vegetables to fill you up. Students should be surveyed to see what types of food they want instead of being forced to eat whatever is available.

I think schools should always offer meat because protein builds muscle to growing students. Also, many kids may not get enough protein at home. "Meat sticks to your ribs."

Our 7th grade Civics class made a list of pros and cons for both sides of this issue.

The advantage of doing a meatless Monday is that it would raise the awareness of additional nutritional needs and sources. It also helps students fight obesity. However, on the downside of that, kids would not get their usual sources of proteins. This could cause problems with students' digestive systems thus interfering with their everyday activities including sports. Also, if students are stubborn and skip lunch because they do not like vegetables, they will not be able to concentrate on school work and function properly in class. They will be focusing their attention on their hunger instead of their studies.

My family has been vegitarian since I was very young, and since we are home-schooled, we got to choose between meat and veggies in our own home. Not very many kids get that choice. Our classroom is split between offering meatless Mondays and not. Most of the students want to have the option of eating meat for lunch everyday. A few ot the students think meatless Mondays would not be a problem. I think that there should be options everyday. There should be healthy things the are meatless and meat choices too, then the student should be able to choose them selfs wether or not they want to be vegetarian or not.

i think we could go vegeterian i day a week cause we have a good amount of meat at school anyway but in some schools it won't matter because even though the main meal is vegeterian you still have a choice of different sandwhiches, but it wouldn't hurt to try vegeterian, i mean i personally don't really care, but it would be a little different and you need different sometimes!!!

Meatless Monday would be bad if you don’t like fruits and vegetables. It is best to give students a choice. Most middle and high schools have a variety of lunches. It is the elementary school kids that usually don’t have any options.

I believe that meatless mondays are a great idea and should be in high schools as well. I go to a school where you see poor overweight kids eat lunch everyday because they dont have enough money to buy healthier lunches. Bringing meatless mondays to high schools are just one more step into making a healthier america

Meat should always be around this is from my own perspective I'm not trying to state any facts but thats my own opinion. I see why they think we should have veggies at school but thats not of my own point of view.

Been a vegetarian for longer than my students have been alive and I seem to be healthier than most of them. What's the big deal with the protein scare? You can get sufficient protein without eating any meat. Every hear of vitamins. Then again, most parents I know probably have not.

I'd eat it, it would be ten times better then that 'stuff' they call food at my school! It's like we HAVE to have Pizza twice a weak an dif it's not Pizza it's chicken nuggets. (I don't eat school food anymore, but when I did it was annoying) so I'd defenitly opt for a vegetarian menu if it was natural and tasted god, Cooked right no over or whatever they do with it.

Cutting meat out of the lunch menu may be a money saver, buy the Baltimore school district didn't even ask for parents' opinions when they chose to do so. I am opposed to it, as the district doesn't even know how many kids rely on school meals for protein.

I don't think only vegetables should be put on the menu for once a week. We students love the way lunch is surved with out this activity and we already eat vegetables when we get home.

i think meatless mondays is a great idea. some kids don't get there servings of vegetables at home so school is the only place to eat healthy.

I think that meat should be served at schools all days. This is because protein and many of the healthy fats found in meat are essential, especially in growing kids! I do think it would be beneficial if their were some sort of program where you had to have meat as well as a nutritious serving of fruit of vegetables. Also, if the meat were served in smaller portions and cooked in healthier ways (like grilling instead of frying) school meals would be healthier. So healthy is good, but don't forget balance!

I think it is a great idea. I think kids should eat more healthy food and yet still enjoy it because not all of it is gross and and it's only one day.

    October 21, 2009 at 4:30 pm |
  129. Kat

Everyone should be able to choose between a meal consisting of vegetables and healthy meats. But only one day of just vegetales doesn't seem as bad as vegetables only everyday. Also some kids would need the additional nutrition from meats but that's another story.

    October 21, 2009 at 4:30 pm |
  130. Carly

I would be willing to not eat meat on Mondays. Although I know some people wouldn't agree with it, but it is a wonderful idea because it gives kids a more diverse diet. I think they should try it in schools for a while, but after a few weeks of it, students should be able to choose for themselves, whether or not they wish to continue with the vegeterian lunches.

I learned something in heath class and that was the heath triangle. There is absolutely nothing wrong with meat, it is recomended that an average adult should consume about 6 to 8 oz. of cooked meat a day. I also learned that you are supposed to eat a balanced diet and to maintain that diet on daily basis. So if they took away my meat I wouldn't be running on all 10 cylinders.

Hey dude veggies area okay but only eating them for a meal is a bit overboard don't you think? Meat is the bomb yo! Don't force us to eat stuff that came out of the dirt. too much veggies is messed up!!!! bye.

    October 21, 2009 at 4:44 pm |
  137. Kate

I dont think there's anything wrong with meatless Mondays. Many kids do eat to much or very unhealthy things. The money saved from the meat can go toward things like new books and papers. As for getting enough protein, that's not an issue. Foods such as bean and nuts give us lots of protein in a much more nutritionus way. My best friend is a vegitarian, and she gettes her protein from eggs, milk, nuts and beans.

    October 21, 2009 at 4:48 pm |
  138. Medha

It is good for children to try out new thins.Meatless Mondays does just that.Kids will discover that not everyone eats meat and that will introduce new concepts to them. They will become more worldly.People who argue that meat should be on the menu everyday have a point but one day of eating veggies won't make a difference.

    October 21, 2009 at 5:50 pm |
  139. Stevie

I think it's great. It's only on mondays and you don't just get protien from meat. I'm a vegetarian and i get my protien from nuts and beans.

    October 21, 2009 at 5:54 pm |
  140. Bobby

I think that the schools have no right to try to limit meat to students when some can only afford to buy school lunch. They tell us it's about student not getting enough protein when most protien is found in meat. Its a restriction of choice to them.

    October 21, 2009 at 6:13 pm |
  141. Marissa

Some schools like mine have a lunch and everyday meals. So even if like today the lunch is pasta their is still burgers, hamburers, fries, sandwhichs, salads, and all that good stuff. So i think that we should have a meatless monday, but only for the lunch meal, so if u dont want the vegitarian meal, if thats what you wanna call it, then you can still have the regular individual meals that are for everyday. I know alot of schools dont have so many optians like we do, but i think if they wanted to stress this point about meatless mondays, then i think that for the school that have this kind of variaty, then they should make the main meal have no meat. But if the school only has 1 or 2 ideams to choose for the lunch everyday, then i dont think they should have meatless monday because it should be your choice, you shouldnt have to be forced to eat this way. have a good day carl! : )

    October 21, 2009 at 6:18 pm |
  142. Jessica

No. Kids schools should not have Meatles Mondays. For kids that don't eat enough food, that won't be helping.

    October 21, 2009 at 6:20 pm |
  143. William

I think meat should always be on the menu. For some people lunch is the only good meal they get every day. If all they have to eat is vegetables and fruits then they may not be able to make it through the day. I attend a school where a lot of the students play sports of some other after school activity. They don't eat breakfast and don't get home until 6:00 P.M. They need lunch just to make it during school. Having just vegetables and fruits is not enough calories for them to carry out their daily task. If someone does make us go vegetarian then the least they should do is lower the cost of the food down.

    October 21, 2009 at 6:27 pm |
  144. Jacqueline

I think that taking meat off the monday menue is a good idea, but only for those people who are over whight, and can get enough food to eat. But for those who only eat at school because of family crises should be able to eat what they choose.

I think meat should always be on the menu because . . . . . . Meat is amazing and some people don't want to go vegetarian on Monday. its already the worst day of the week.

  148. Blake

No meatless mondays. Are you crazy?! How could you take away meat? Carl, you can't do that. I know its healthy, but kids love to have meat. The only thing bad about meat is cholesterol. Some kids like me hate vegtables. Why make people eat lettuce and cabbage. I'm not trying to make you feel bad but I think that you should lighten up. I say brunch. Today I had a taco and it was great. See why schools can't take away meat? To make it fair, I say 2 days of meat, 1 day of brunch, 1 day of fruit, and 1 day of vegtables, all in 1 week. Fair enough? Do me a favor and tell the Principals that NO MEATLESS MONDAYS!!! The only thing I hate about school lunch is chicken. We have chicken every monday. Its torcher. Everybody used to love it. But now they do it every monday. I know i'm wasting your time so I better go.

    Hi,

I feel this is a retarded idea. Me being a farmer in california, i think that you need to help support the meat industry. How are they also going to be feeding the carnivores lyk myself???? It is highly impossible to do, they need certain proteins nd stuff you cant find anywhere else!!! This is just my opinion ( wich happens to be true).

I think that meat should be an option for those that want it. I myself have friends that are vegetarians and they take it very seriously. It would be nice to give them a day out of each week that they didn't have to pick and choose in the lunch line.

    October 21, 2009 at 7:39 pm |
  152. Samie

How are they giving us more options for lunch, I mean without meat its just the vegies, fruitss, and beans so we reallt don't have much of a choice.

    October 21, 2009 at 7:41 pm |
  153. Hayden

No, because we as kids need protien. I think we should always eat our fruits and vegtables, but some people might not get the nutritonal amount of meat everyday so they need that meat at school.

    October 21, 2009 at 8:23 pm |
  154. Nick

I do not think that meatless Mondays are a good idea. Although it would only be one day out of the week, I look forward to eating meat every day at lunch. Especially if you come from a family that loves to eat meat, states should not make it a requirement. I am not saying that it should not be a choice. If it is a choice, I would not be upset or mad. As long as there is a choice of meat, I will be happy.

    October 21, 2009 at 8:26 pm |
  155. pickle

I think that meatless mondays are a good idea because kids that eat meat alot will see that they can get other choies of foods instead of eating the same thing all the time.

by the way i htink the seals were cute!

    October 21, 2009 at 8:26 pm |
  156. Drew

I think that school should have meatless Mondays because it would be a very easy way to save the schools money and to get kids into some vegetation every once in awhile. Also kids do not have to eat meat every day.

    October 21, 2009 at 8:26 pm |
  157. Jennifer

I thinkthat is a good idea but they should add a chouce of meat so kids can still have it. It dosent have to be unhealthy meat, it can be very healthy some of it. Plus meat is reccomended on the food pyramid

    October 21, 2009 at 8:51 pm |
  158. Megan

Never. I think they should just go organic with everything else. We get cookies in our al' carte line and they are EWY! But organic cookies are AMAZIN'! But if people actually tried organic food they would taste way better then all of that food with sugar. Give food a chance yoooo.

    October 21, 2009 at 8:55 pm |

I think its a great idea to have meatless monday becuase children can eat something different everyday.

They shouldn't have meatless mondays because we are kids and we need meat they should have vegetarian options but should have meat for the rest of the kids who want meat.

  161. Carla

Firstly, Meatless Mondays reduces the students intake of proteins -macromolecules that are essential to our growth, cell structure, and bodily functions...among several other essential purposes!
Secondly, If the main reason Meatless Monday was set up is to take reduce obesity in adolescents, why don't they stop serving cheap snacks with high caloric values? cookies? soft-serve? pretzels? or for that matter start serving un-processed meats? That would be a healthier option as well...

    October 21, 2009 at 9:13 pm |
  162. Kevin

I think there should be Meatless Mondays because first of all it hurts animals. Also the slaughter houses and transportation it takes to get the meat to our schools harm the ozone layer.

    October 21, 2009 at 9:16 pm |
  163. Carla

P.S. How does "reducing adolescent obesity" (as mentioned during the segment on today's news) have any link to vegetarianism? This is about stopping childhood obesity, not turning students into vegetarians. Besides, majority of cafeteria vegetables have added sugars and fats...

    October 21, 2009 at 9:17 pm |

Meatless Mondays are good because kids may start to eat more nutritional so obesity goes down

No meat?????!!!!!! i don't think so, most of the kids i know in school like meat for lunch. Yes i could go Vegetarian for a week but i don't think that most others in the School would like to.

    October 21, 2009 at 9:30 pm |
  166. Katie

The Meatless Monday isn't a bad idea because it helps nutrition. I think it would be a bad thing if some kids don't get enough protein and then don't eat any protein at school. I've never heard of that idea, so it's very unique. Whatever they decide, I'm cool with.

    October 21, 2009 at 10:06 pm |
  167. Kyle

Meatless Mondays has a good point and bad point for me...Its good that for meatless mondays they have no meat because that helps the environment because of slaughter house fumes but on the down side, meat gives all humans a large amount of our daily protein....

    October 21, 2009 at 10:13 pm |
  168. Julie

Kids will be fine without eating meat for one meal a week. I was a vegetarian from age 8-16 and I am completely healthy. I never ate tofu or substituted for protein. There are so many ways to get vitamins and adequate nutrition without meat. America relies too much on meat.

I eat meat now, and enjoy it. But there is no problem without eating meat at some meals. Especially if it is a cost savings.

    October 21, 2009 at 10:32 pm |
  169. Lindsay

I think that this is a great idea! It would put kids on a healthier menu and remember, this is only one day. This is a very good and nutritional idea that I agree with. I hope that they do this at my school!

    October 21, 2009 at 10:33 pm |
  170. Travis

I think kids should have a choice what they have to eat at school by having meatless Monday's your just taking away from kids choices.

    October 21, 2009 at 11:04 pm |
  171. Christopher

I figure that as long as you get your amino acids (those things that build up to make proteins), that this idea is pretty much okay. School lunches usually don't have everything you want in them, that is why you can bring your own lunch, but meat isn't the only source of protein in the world, and I can see the thought behind the total idea (and it's a good one). If you have variety and good taste then it is more of a "food from around the world" kind of deal and it's okay.

    October 21, 2009 at 11:11 pm |
  172. Cassie

I think people should just pony up and deal with whatever is dealt out

    October 21, 2009 at 11:18 pm |
  173. Cassy

I think it's an awesome idea, cause there are lots of different diet varieties that we should be able to explore and doing meatless gives people other ideas and/or options for protein alternatives other than meat, right. Some people don't know, or don't have the ability to find out other protein alternatives to meat, so they're forced to eat whatever meat is availible, and having the "Meatless Monday" option availible to students in the academy will promote healthy ways of living for all age groups.

    October 21, 2009 at 11:38 pm |
  174. Mariah

Meat is good for you, so do not have Meatless Mondays. Meatless Mondays is like taking away fruits and vegetables for one day a week. Having no meat will not cut costs for food, because you have to order more veggies and fruits to make up for the loss of meat in a meal.

    October 22, 2009 at 12:00 am |
  175. Juniper

You can have meat any other days so I think it's okay to have meatless mondays. Even if growing children needs meat very much, still i think they are stuffing ourselves to deaths with them 🙂 I personally would like to have a day off with meat. there are protein in beans and stuff like that anyway (even if not much.)

    October 22, 2009 at 4:06 am |
  176. Sara

I don't really like the idea of "Meatless Mondays". Students should have the choice to decide what they eat; if they want to eat meat, the schools should let them.

    October 22, 2009 at 8:31 am |
  177. Cassandra

I think the school should let the students put it to a vote to see what they want. I may be able to accept it it all just depends.

    October 22, 2009 at 8:32 am |
  178. Thyme

Meatless Mondays is a good idea I think. Some meat is good so withholding from it for a day is actually healthier.

    October 22, 2009 at 8:34 am |
  179. Krystina

I don't like the idea at all. They, the students, should have a choice to eat what they want, not what the school gives them (meatless Mondays); there should be choices like if the students want to eat meat they can, if they don't want to eat meat then don't.

I'm not saying that I don't care, because I do, don't get me wrong. But I bring my own lunch to school and I only get school lunch once a year. So it does not really matter to me if the school starts to go vegetarian. I personally think that it is a great idea, but the school should have both choices anyway to fit the needs of everyone that goes to that school. They would get more business that way!!!!!!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

    October 22, 2009 at 8:43 am |
  181. Kasey

I always bring my lunch to school, but I still care. I think that it would be good to have a change, but I also believe that they should not take meat off the menu, they should just take off some and add more vegetarian options.

i think it is a googd idea that the schools are taking the meat off of the menu for on day of the week, this helps the students rember to eat right and create a goood diet.

I dont like that idea very much. i know people want us to be healthy.. but i think its our choice to pick what we want. its our body and i think we should get to choose. maybe insted of having meatless monday, we could have a different food. like have meat insted of unhealthy food.

The no meat mondays could be a way to save money, but at what cost? some of the kids diffenitaly don't get enough protein in their diets, but they should have meat as a side choice in the menu for those kids or get them a special lunch.

i think meatless mondays is a bad idea. i should be able to eat meat if i want to. i shouldn,t be told what to eat. i do think making food healthier is a good idea. we need more nutrition in our lunches. we could make the meat more healthy for students.

Meatless Mondays would be a bad choice, it should be up to the kids about what they want to eat for lunch that day and with some kids meat is all they like. So i think the choice for the kids meal at school should be a choice made by the kids not the school.

Meatless Mondays isn't really a good idea... Some people love meat too much to give it up for a day. I think some people could handle it... We could still have cheese pizza! If Meatless Mondays doesn't work out, the school could just serve a salad choice everyday.

I think having one day without meat would be fine. Kids don’t need to have red meat every day. Plus, it has a lot of fat and carbs inside of it. I don’t want to sound all vegetarian, but all of those animals are being killed and well, I feel bad for them. I would be a vegetarian except my parents said it’s too much money. I feel it’s a GOOD idea to have at least one day of the week to be meat free. ANIMALS HAVE FEELINGS TOO! 🙂

I believe going vegetarian one day a week at school would be fine. Meat isn’t the only thing to get protein form, you know. Nuts and beans have it, too. Plus, they are healthier as well. It isn’t like we are committing to give up meat forever. It’s just 1-2 meals out of a day per week. If people are worried so much about obesity and other health problems, this will be a great way to get us kids into healthy habits. I say, go for it.

I think that one day a week wouldn't be bad for schools, but it might escalate into more than one day a week. Some people might disagree with one day a week, because you might not be getting enough protien. But not having meat one day would help you make heathier decisions.

Personally, I don’t care about lunch at school. They have a few choices, but the food tastes horrible. We have hamburgers with the worst quality whole wheat bread. The patty is fine, but there is so much bread with it that I hardly taste it. Before you adults shove vegetarian food down our throats, expecting to reduce obesity, you should think about the quality of foods we already have. Skipping lunch, because of tasteless food makes us snack more once we get home.

Meatless Mondays is probably not a good idea because there are so many kids in this country that love meat. It might be good, but it depends what they serve instead. I know our school lunch’s vegetables are completely disgusting. The green beans could make you barf and the rice, you could pass out. Now if it was small like take away pepperoni pizza for a day, I wouldn’t mind that. Plus, if you do that, you are almost forcing kids to eat this and are not giving the kids a big option.

I think that “Meatless Mondays” wouldn’t be a bad idea. Most of the lunch ladies don’t cook meat very healthy so, I don’t think it would hurt to have like a salad or something for lunch one day a week. Most kids don’t get the amount of veggies for the day they are supposed to get, so this would probably help with that.

meatless monday. i think that this could be good and bad. first of all if there was no meat on monday the kids might not eat school lunches on mondays. but if kids did eat on meetless monday they would be eating a lot more vegies. so this is why i think that it would be good and bad.

I personally think that we should have a meatless Monday. America is the number one obiese nation in the world. Having a salad bar, or just more fruits and veggies would really help alot of kids in the health department. Having one day out of the week would NOT be that bad. I mean it would be a great idea to start the weeks lunch. Plus, it would really help the wschools budget. If kids really hated to have some fruit and veggies for lunch, then maybe we could have one line that served meat and three others that served salad, fruits or maybe cheese pizza. Having a healthier choice for lucnch is a great idea. GO MEATLESS MONDAYS!

I think they should have semi-meatless Mondays. If they take away all the meat in school lunches how would we get all the protein that we need to function during the day? If we did have meatless Mondays, wouldn’t that cost more that meaty Mondays? Although we could use meatless Mondays, we would be spending money for that, and not using the money for extra programs at school. and maybe they should take out the vending machines with fatty foods, and put fresh fruits instead.

I believe that they shouldnt have meatless mondays but for 1 school meat sucks, for 2 i think that they should just have more choises like veggitarian types of food and then for kids who want meat and choose to eat it. I also think that the government shouldnt be desiding what the children of america are eating no matter how unhealthy they eat. Also there will be parents protesting to this and instead of turning it to an all meatless monday they need to have atleast five choices like a sub pizza vegitarian food and meat people also the meal of the day thats what i think.

Going vegetarian is not such a bad idea for ONE day a week I mean seriously it would save one more poor innocent cow one more day of life before being chopped up. And plus yes meat is good but most kids just eat junk food at home most likely anyway and meat is all that kids will eat anyway and most of the fruit and vegetables usually rot anyway!!!!!! So ya it would diffidently help obese people and keep kids healthier. Plus its also a $ saver so our school can get more savings and could get better funding for field trips, projects, jamba juice Wednesday .it all just makes sense to give it up a day a week and if you don’t like it…bring cold lunch

I think that meatless Monday would be a great thing for schools to have because as the youth starts to get more involved with what goes on in the world, people are choosing different life styles. For instance going vegetarian. I think that having meat every day is both unhealthy and not supporting of the kids that actually want to help the world. And if not all veggies and fruit, why not more choices for the vegetarians and vegans? Or, if the school just wants to be healthy, choose chicken or another meat besides red meat. Schools have such little all veggie or vegan choices, all my school has is salad, the all have some sort of meat besides greasy gross cheese pizza. And , adding on to the whole pizza thing, if schools are so worried about health, why don’t they cut down having pizza EVERY DAY? Instead they take away the choice of chicken (a healthy kind of meat) as a daily choice on the lunch menu and just to make it even not healthy, they put hamburgers at least twice a week AND Hamburger as a main dish choice. To me they are being totally hipicritical or two faced about the whole health strike thing

i think that meat should always be on the menu because some students wont eat vegtables and some wont eat meat, wich is fine but they need to have meat and vegtables at school. otherwise people cant stay healthy. you need meat and vegtables to be healthy. if they take meat away from monday so kids wont eat anything because they refuse to eat vegtables, and then they wont be healthy anymore. if you dont eat anything than your body stores the fat cells and then you arent healthy anymore. but if you add meat and vegtables kids will eat every day. if some kids wont eat that then make two lines one for vegatarians and one for the ones who eat meat.

Ok, veggies are good for you & that is fine & everything, but no they can not take our protein away. They are a disgrace to the human race!!!! If they want us to eat only veggies then they do it. They are such a hypocrite. If we are the only ones that do it & they don't do it then that is not cool; if we do it then they need to do it too. Diets do not work at all everyone knows that why would they want us on every Monday have no meat. Ya kids that are vegetarians would need it but what about the other kids its just not right. As i said before DIETS DO NOT WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If they did then thousands of people would be doing this every day 24 hours a day. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I SAY THAT THEY SHOULD NOT DO THAT AT ALL!!!!

I think that it would be a good idea to have one day without meat; however, they should give the students ALOT more options, since the healthy stuff doesn’t exactly fill you up all of the way. And besides that fact, they need to consider that if they dont do the meatless mondays, kids are not getting all of the nutrition they need. They should also consider that fact that some of the students might be allergic to the healthy stuff they serve on meatless Mondays. What they should do is get those students names and make a special lunch. Not special enough that the other students don't seem it’s fair. Just give the students some other varieties on what they eat. I think that my school should consider doing this. Like meatless Mondays or fruity Fridays or something that gives students a lot more varieties.
My school has the following we could choose from:
    Main Dish
    Subs
    Salad
    Pizza
    &&
    Some type of meat.

Personally I think that The MEATLESS MONDAYS are a good idea for the environment, but it also has some defects.

i think going vegetarian for on day at school would be ok. If parents have a problem with it they still can pack their kids lunch so either way it should be ok, and besides its only one day.

    October 22, 2009 at 3:09 pm |
  276. Margaret

I don't think it's right to take away the meat for people who aren't vegetarians. But if they are then there should be another choice of food for them.

I believe that meatless Mondays at schools are a great idea. Most kids don’t eat enough veggies anyway, so this is one way they could get some more in their stomach. I’m up for it, are you?

    October 22, 2009 at 4:07 pm |
  278. Beast

I believe we should always have a little bit of meat in our diet but i think its ok if we take it out for one day.

    October 22, 2009 at 4:07 pm |
  279. Justin

I don’t think I would mind having a meatless Monday every week. It has really no affect on me. I like vegetables and I don’t see why people would freak out about a little topic.

    October 22, 2009 at 4:07 pm |
  280. Hannah

I think we should go vegetarian for a day. Not more than one day though. One day would be good for our health without upsetting the meat lovers too much.

    October 22, 2009 at 4:10 pm |
  281. Carl

I don't think that they should make kids eat it. If they chose to they can. There should always be a option to eat meat or veggies.

    October 22, 2009 at 4:10 pm |
  282. Emily

I think that it is a good idea to do this one day out of the week. I think the people who are vegetarians will like this and the people who aren’t have every other day of the week to have meats. It will also be good for our health for one day.

    October 22, 2009 at 4:11 pm |
  283. sixela

i think that going vegetarian for a day wouldnt kill people. i think that people need to eat less meat cuz of the health reasons. but i dont think that people need to go overboard on being vegetarian but meatless mondays would keep health incidents down.

  284. markie

I think that meatless Monday would be ok but at the same time I think that we need meat. I now so vegetarians at are school so maybe it my be good to have a course of just vegetarian we have salads but there is meet and on Monday I think it might be good to have meatless Monday.

    October 22, 2009 at 4:12 pm |

I think we should have meat on the menu every day because we have vegetarian items on the menu every day so it wouldn’t be fair for the people that like to eat meat. Also, some people don’t like plant foods so they wouldn’t eat that day during lunch so that wouldn’t be good for their health.

    October 22, 2009 at 4:14 pm |
  287. anonymous :)!

I do not think that the meat should be taken off of the menu every Monday. It should stay on there because eating meat or not is a personal choice. You can’t make people not eat meat, just like you can’t make people eat meat. You take meat off the menu it takes away the food option. It could be healthier but let the students make that decision. If the meat is taken off every Monday I will be bringing my own lunch.

    October 22, 2009 at 4:14 pm |
  288. Alexis

Meatless Mondays are a good idea, in my opinion. You can live just one day a week without meat. It will help you get off to a good start with a healthy lifestyle. You can enjoy the feeling of knowing that at least one day a week you are not contributing to killing an animal or killing yourself.

    October 22, 2009 at 4:15 pm |
  289. Jason

I wouldn’t want to take meat off the menu. I always get a turkey sub for hot lunch. Fruits and Vegetables aren’t a good source of protein and you should have protein for lunch. Some people need meat to keep them going through the day. They could add more fruits and vegetables to the menu but that doesn’t mean they need to take meat off the menu. They should just keep it on the menu.

    October 22, 2009 at 4:16 pm |
  290. bllary

I think meat is my god given right and i should get to have meat whenever i want.

    October 22, 2009 at 4:17 pm |
  291. Bill

I think not having meat on the menu would be rather foolish. More kids would stop eating lunch especially athletic ones. You can’t just live off of lettuce. You need meat to have your body grow correctly. Yeah, it’s a good idea to try to add more vegetables, but it’s absolutely dim to take away meat.

I think that we should leave it how it is becuase meat is animportant part of our food chart. if we take meat out we will lose important protiens.

  293. Karissa

I think that Meatless Monday's is a good idea. Everybody doesn't eat meat and it gives those people an opportunity to go to school and be able to eat things without having meat . Also it's healthy and can help with some of the concern about obesity, because if children are eating healthy food and if they like it they'll tell their parents about it. This will also help introduce some kids to new types of food. Some kids eat unhealthy food at home and don't eat vegetables. Also, it won't kill people to not eat meat at lunch for one day.

    October 22, 2009 at 4:35 pm |
  294. Vinny

I think that going vegetarian at school for one day isnt enough. Obiesedy rates are rising, and my generation isnt supposed to out live my parents generation. There's a guy in my school who is 100 pounds overweight and yesterday i saw him ordering 2 cheesburgers at lunch. So mabe 3 days a week could get kids thinking right when it comes to food. All I know is, at some point we have to do something about our countrys weight problem because if we dont, everything is goig to go down hill in every catagory.

My school kind of has a meat less day where we have pizza and I agree with taking out meat in some days because they are other kinds of food that have protein other besides meat.

    October 22, 2009 at 6:59 pm |
  297. Victoria

Going "Meatless" on mondays is a HORRIBLE idea we need protein to get through the day even the FDA knows that and a lot of people are carb sensitive like diabetics.

    October 22, 2009 at 7:55 pm |
  298. Ravi

I think meatless mondays is a great idea! Starting something like this in schools will help kids get the idea that meat isn't the only food in the world. Childhood obesity is a problem in our nation and can't be fixed instantly, but this is our first step toward our solution. Being born a vegetarian myself, it makes me wonder what causes the urge for kids to eat other once living things. Imagine you are a turkey, and Thanksgiving is around the corner, but suddenly, you are captured so a family can feast on your guts. Kids who are malnourished in poor country's need meat, but America is just a mountain of surplus meat.
    Go meatless mondays!!

    October 22, 2009 at 8:15 pm |
  299. Sam

Meat should never be taken off the menu! The protein that it provides is the most important nutrient you take in all day. It gives you energy and helps you stay focussed. I'm an athlete and if I didn't get enough meat I would crash and burn

I wouldn't mind not eating meat at school for a day out of the week.

I think that the Meatless Mondays are a great idea, and that if students and parents don't like the idea, they should remember that the options may be new paper, or one day a week with no meat. Plus, how do you think the vegetarians feel with needing to pack their own lunches because all the options include meat?

even thow meat balls are good butt vegtabls are good for you so i thik they did the right thing and they shold keep it that whay...................................................... Don't you think?

  303. Catherine

Meatless Mondays are good for the kids health but that could be there only meal of the day. Some kids dont get food when there at home and some get free lunch. I think kids should have more choices, like when they go through the line choose from meat or not.

    October 23, 2009 at 7:07 am |
  304. Riya

I think that even though it's only one day of th week, you should still always offer meat. Kids need protein, and like CNN stated, 3 out 4 kids don't have enough protein. You should offer vegiterian dishes EVERYDAY, but not only veggie dishes....kids need meat.

    October 23, 2009 at 8:50 am |
  305. Vikki

I think that I could go vegetatarian one day a week. And for the people that can't do that, they should just bring in their lunch. But eating a salad and tofu one day a week wouldn't be too bad. I think know that I do it. And it might save us some money. I think that just ordering some Lettuce and fruit wouldn't cost much. It's also really healthy.

    October 23, 2009 at 8:51 am |
  306. gaby

andrew i totally do agree with you. what if some kids are allgeric to vegietarion chilli? they could have some kind of reaction and it would be the whole schools fault!

    October 23, 2009 at 9:20 am |
  307. angelica

I think that this is a great idea because I believe that personally having no meat for one day is better tasting than having meat. Having salads or chilior stuff like that can still be absolutely delicious without the meat. And as for protein, it is also in beans, peanut butter, and nuts. So you can have a complete nutricious breakfast and lunch without meat.

I agree kids in the usa are getting more and more lazy.....It won't kill u to eat somthing healthy for a change....soo put down the remote and pick up a ball!

    October 23, 2009 at 1:38 pm |
  316. Alyssa

I don't see anything wrong with not serving meat on Mondays. As long as there is still protein in the dish that's being offered, then the kids are still receiving the same nutritional value as if they were being served meat. If any parents of children really have a problem with this change, they can always bring a lunch from home–like vegetarians do every other day.

    October 23, 2009 at 1:41 pm |
  317. Becca

Meatless mondays is a idea for those who ARE a vegetarian and not for those who eat meat. i know that i wouldnt be in a great mood at all if my school went to a meatless monday. instead they should just have a vegetarian selection that day.

    October 23, 2009 at 1:42 pm |
  318. Chelsea

Trying to have no meat on Mondays is trying to in my opinion trying to make people healthier and I dont think you should make people eat meatless foods. I don't think that our choices should be just meat or no meat. I think that if people want meat then they can have it and if they don't want meat then they don't have to have it. Everyone deserves choices and they need to make their own choices, if they want to consume a lot of calories then let them it's their choice, its their life not ours. If people want to be overweight then let them, in our time teachers and doctors are constantly telling everyone to be healthy and stay in shape, so they know what the effects would be, its not like theyre clueless to what could happen to them.

  319. Brittney

I think it is a good idea to go vegetarian more then one time a week because their are some kids that are vegetarians and deserve to have food that they can eat at lunch other than bring their bagged lunch's. their are some kid that like to bring their bagged lunches though and they could still do so it just give the vegetarians a different think about their school. The kids that aren't vegetarians will get to try something new and i am all about trying new things.

meat is a food staple. in order to survive, protein is a necessity to our bodies. Vegetarians, although they do receive a well balanced low-cal diet, are still short of the important natural proteins that there is in the world. to force entire schools into a "once a week" vegetarian lunch is something that i don't really agree with.
perhaps the reason america is stressing the intake of meat is because america is known for eating all the wrong amounts of certain meats. beef is a meat that america looks at as a "healthy protein". school lunches almost always include beef in it in some way. beef is a meat that is pretty harsh on the liver, which can be a cause of obesity and cardio problems (see MCDONALDS).
i can see where the schools are trying to be helpful by reducing the amount of fatty meat intakes in students. maybe if schools were to exclude BEEF on mondays and substitute with healthier meats (like chicken and turkey), then schools would be for opted to choose a healthier route (of some sort) for their "unhealthy meats" diets.

  321. cody

why why no meat we need meat it should not be taken away. what if there is a kid that all they can eat is meat. and if people really dont want meat for a day than dont eat it. no one ever said that u r forced to eat meat every day

    October 23, 2009 at 1:47 pm |
  322. kayla

i dont think schools should get reed of meat on mondays because even if meat is bad for you you still need protein that day you still need to be healthy. what they should is get reed of beef. beef is the stuff thats really bad for you not meat. i think that if you get reed of meat schools will loose there money and they will have to jack there prices up even more than they already are. thats my opinion.

    October 23, 2009 at 1:48 pm |
  323. Brody

Its a horrible idea to do that because it is taking out the necessary protein that we need to run our bodies that going vegetarian wouldnt be the way to go. If they would do that they might as well take all meat out period because meat is a part of the things that the body needs to function.

    October 23, 2009 at 1:48 pm |
  324. collin

no harm... but im a carnivor! i need my meat! maybe just make it just sausage pizza, but to have no meat at all is just reduciuls! let them eat meat if they want. or maybe make it so the parrents chose what the kids eat online... but it is just wrong to take meat away from meat lovers

    October 23, 2009 at 3:43 pm |
  325. emily

I think that kids should not have to be forced to eat meat every monday. If you dont get meat your body will slow down it needs protien to stay active. It is a good idea that kids have a variety in their food choices but you need every food group(exept junk food) to stay healthy.

    October 23, 2009 at 4:16 pm |

i think it is a bad idea there is something called that food pyramid we are soppose to eat meat in our school we have a garden where we get our vegtables why can't they just make the food healthy our school has home made pizza it is healthy fo us to eat. common.

i tihink it is good because it can reduce the obestity level even though they may not eat healty at haome every day the can eat heatly for one day a week and one meal. i know i would perfer heaty food or meat that is fried it has so many calories meatless monday would be good for kids no to eat vegitarian and not always meat it would be very helpful. but it wolud be bad to so they can make kids have P E every day and have meatless mondays

I think it's a really good idea to have meatless mondays. There are a ton of obese kids in America. Also, I'm pretty sure that tests have been done on kids who cut out a little meat from their diets and they have actually done better in school, testing higher. And for all the meat lovers out think just stop and think about what the meat the school gives you is actually made off. It's a mystery meat and it's disgusting! I don't think meatless mondays are going to serve ONLY vegetables. They would serve things like mac n cheese and grilled cheese, and these things have plenty of protein too. It's not like you'd be giving up your cheeseburger for spinach. Be realistic...

    October 25, 2009 at 5:26 pm |
  337. Kensli

i think the idea of meatless mondays is a great idea. As long as the school is still providing a good source of protein to kids. The idea of a day free from the growth hormones, and preservatives found in most lunch meat today can only benefit students.

    October 25, 2009 at 6:36 pm |
  338. Samantha

I wouldn't mind having one day of vegetarian food. I think that they should have a choice of what they can eat. I probably wouldn't like to eat meat all the time. I can't have the same thing for lunch everyday. I usually have different food for lunch. Also, in the video kids get most of their protein from school.

I wish I understood why they want to add vegeterian food with the lunch program. I say no vegeterian food, that there should be normal real meat every day at school. Fruit and vegatables should be on the side.

    October 26, 2009 at 9:44 am |
  352. Paige

I wish you had a choice of which meat was on your plate. This would be a good idea because some kids are picky eaters, and we all know that the lunch money goes to schools tecnology. It would be better this way because you could make the kids have a meat and a side of vegitables. This would be muc better in te kids eyes and te adults eyes too! This is an idea for many lunch lady's of the world.

I think that the menu should always have meat because their meat is good but meat is killing animals that we all think is adoribal. Lots of people will want this and will want that. So, personally i think that the lunch ladies meat is better than their vegaterian food, but some people might disagree.

I think that is wrong. How would you feel if you dident like vegetables? Meat is healthy for you. You should not be forced to eat vegetables.

I think that having meat every day is not a good thing it would be to much just for us kids. Maybe they just should have meat once or twice a week. I'm not a meat lover I eat meat but not that much. I'm not saying that kidsshould never eat meat it is okay but they should not eat meat every day.

Although obesity is a huge problem in the U.S, Meatless Mondays are pointless! Who said meat is bad for you?!?!

    October 26, 2009 at 11:51 am |
  372. Sarah

I think that Meatless Mondays is a great idea. Students don't need to have meat everyday. With our economy and obesity rates, it would help students and schools if every school went to Meatless Mondays. If parents have a problem with it, students can always pack lunch. I think that every school should have some sort of Meatless Mondays.

it hink they should go with the vegetarian day because it will not be fair to the people that are vegetarians that they have to eat meat.

I think if on monday they have meatless monday than they should have a choice if they want meat or not . Lots of people like meat a lot and some people dont like meat that much so they should be able to chose what they eat.

I think we could go vegeterian 1 day a week cause we have a good amount of meat at school anyway but in some schools it won't matter because even though the main meal is vegeterian you still have a choice of different sandwhiches, but it wouldn't hurt to try vegeterian, I mean I personally don't really care, but it would be a little different and you need different sometimes!!!

    October 26, 2009 at 10:21 pm |
  377. Dima

I think that eating all vegetables can be good and saves animals but wgat about energy and proteen. I think that meatless mondays should mot be started although its a good idea i think that schools should not start this lunch program.

    October 26, 2009 at 11:46 pm |
  378. Samantha

I wouldn't mind having one day a week with no meat being served. I bring my lunch to school everyday anyway. If you didn't put "vegetarian" on the menu, kids wouldn't even notice! But if you're going to make one day of the week vegetarian, keep it on Monday. No one likes Mondays! So keep it on that day to get it over with in the beginning of the week.

I think that there should be meat on the menu as well as vegitarian food because some people may not like vegan food so i think sometimes it should be vegitarian but there should always be a choice of meat, vegitarian, something on special, and fruits or vegitables

    October 27, 2009 at 8:56 am |
  380. Jillian

I am a vegetarian, but i'm not a full vegetarian. I eat chicken, turkey, and fish. I don't want to sound like a person who won't eat their vegetable, because I love them, but meat has a lot of things that we need in them. It is very healthy for us. At my school they have a salad bar, and another line that has the meats in them. I do think however, once a month that would be a fine idea.

    October 27, 2009 at 8:59 am |
  381. chaz

I think they should have both because some people like or don't like meat.

WHY it's irony! put meat on the menu already. nobody can survive without meat except veggietereans which I'm sure I'm not one of those! meat must prevail!

After reflecting on your post, I decided that I think that we should be vegetarians on Mondays. It's just a Monday. There are four more days of the week that you could get meat on.
After all, meat does have a lot of fat in it. Shouldn't we lose the fat?? I know that it has protien in it too, but like I said, there four more days of the week left. I mean c'mon, we can live without it for a day!!!!!!!

    October 27, 2009 at 11:02 am |
  385. kelsey

I think that meat shouldn't be served not just one day not served but three days meat not served because meat is animals Don't kill animals!!!

It is only one day of the week. Many kids are overweight in America , so we feel this would be a great idea. This great habit can stay with you for the rest of your life. We feel that a great healthy lunch every day leads to a healthy life.

    October 27, 2009 at 1:59 pm |
  391. JAZZY!

I think it's a great idea because we our need energy and fruit and veggies. But we have to get our protein some times.

    October 27, 2009 at 7:17 pm |
  392. cheese

I think that people need vegitables but people also need meat to servive. I think people should have the choice of eating either meat or vegitables or both.

  393. Keira

Imagine that you're a 1st grader at your house getting ready for school. When you wake up, you usually think about " I wonder what grade I got on my test!" But for some kids, they think about lunch. And waking up on a Monday morning thinking that "today is meatless monday, oh boy." is distgusting. They should still have the meat at schools, but at least make them healthy with a daily serving of nutritious veggies.

    October 27, 2009 at 9:42 pm |
  394. danny

I think they should have more vegitables but they should have meat.

    October 28, 2009 at 9:03 am |
  396. emily

I think it's rather pointless to not serve meat on Mondays. One day a week is not going to make kids healthier. If you want to become healthier, you have to eat healthy all the time. Rather than eliminate meat, meals can be offered with healthy meats, such as chicken. Shouldn't we eat healthy everyday instead of only eating healthy on Mondays?

Regardless of the decision, some action SHOULD be taken. Health is something that should not be beckoned with, especially in the bodies of growing children.

    October 28, 2009 at 1:16 pm |
  398. iZamu

thats totally insane! Your body needs protein everyday or else you won't be able to perform as well as you would with protein.Especially in younger people becaues they're still growing and need more neccisary nutrients.

    October 28, 2009 at 8:03 pm |

I am a vegetarian and one of the main problems that I have with my current school is the fact that there are very few food options for me to have at lunch. Where I live there are not many vegetarians, but that shouldn't matter when it comes to serving the children of a school a meal. My school aruges that there are vegetarian options which, technically speaking, is true. But one can not eat chips, a cheese roll, and a yogurt (the so called 'vegetarian options') every day for lunch; it's unhealthy!! Even the salads have meat on them. I think that Meatless Monday's would be a wonderful thing to install in schools around the country. If there are healthier options offered, then I think kids would begin to realize that healthy foods really aren't that bad, and maybe they too would start to lean towards a healthier lifestyle. Eating healthy at a young age will most likely lead to eating healthy for the rest of your life, and with the obesity rate in American today, eating healthy should be one of our TOP priorities.

Have you seen what most schools in america consider meat it's more like mystery glob, or fried bird but some people would rather thay not take the only thing even closely resembling edible food.

  401. ekaterina

    yo Carl,
I think we need meat to grow better for the protein hmm it is in peanut butter too.But we still need protein.

  402. Catherine

My school eats meat almost every day.i think they only need to add more vegtibles to the menu.not go all syco over every meal. plus school lunches taste horrible all ready.they tase under cooked and leave a stinky smell behind.

    October 29, 2009 at 11:23 am |
  403. Deva

I think that inded vegis are very good for you but so is meat. I think there should always be vegis on the menu, but as well as meat.

  404. Katie :)

well i watch this show every friday with my social studys class and i think they r losing people with no meat mondays because some kids love meat and probley would stop buying lunch on mondays .

    October 29, 2009 at 8:04 pm |
  405. Travis

I think meatless mondays isn't good because KIDS LOVE MEAT!

    October 31, 2009 at 9:05 pm |
  406. Ryan

I think the parents and the kids should be able to decide on their own. I mean, it's a free country right? This kind of censorship leads to unnecessary debates like these. Maybe the school can have a parent sign an agreement for a child saying that the child will participate in Meatless Mondays or not. This will cause less conflict and can give the child an opportunity to eat healthy.

Honestly, I think that meatless mondays is a great idea to decrease obesity. But meat isn't the only thing that causes obesity. On meatless mondays, a kid can go home and eat pizza and donuts for dinner and still be obese. Either way, a child and a parent will have to make a decision to eat healthy. One cannot just force it.

    October 31, 2009 at 9:20 pm |
  407. Simon

I think that one day a week is not that bad and can help kids stay away from heart provlems and get a good diet. The meatless mondays can also show students that vegie foods are not that bad and will include more of it in their life. Maybe healthy greens can help kids stay foccused in school.

I think it wouldn't be good to have a "meatless" day. For one thing meat is a protein and the students won't have enough energy to get through the day without it. 😀 just my opinion.....

For me going to a meatless school would be terible. No more ribs and hamburger, hot dogs, steak and other meat I counldn't live wiht out.

  410. Trisha

I really don't care about this because I don't eat meat anyway... I am a vegetarian, but it would be sort of good if they did that, they would stop asking vegetarians "if you don't eat meat, what do you eat?!"

its not like our school even has any meat anyways the only meat we had today was the peporoni on the pizza

I think meatless mondays are a good idea.......but what about the kids who don't get protien as it is.........and if you don't like veggies suck it up and bring a lunch from home on mondays!=~)

i personally its a horrible idea why does it have to be veggies there disgusting. i know everyone loves fruit why not fruit.and what wrong with chicken and meat anyways i have an apple a day at our school anyways

I guess its not that bad to go meatless for one day a week. it helps prevent heart problems and helps prevent salmenela poisoning too well at least in the meat:) i say go for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's my personal opinion as a vegetarian to say meat should go entirely. Our school doesn't serve REAL meat anyway, its all just soy or something, so I doesn't really matter, but if our school did serve meat I'd say away with it.

going meatless for one day we could survive. I don't like many vegetables but i think i could go meatless for one day

I like the idea of having a meatless monday because it shows students what other things they can eat and be healthy. The whole world doesnt revolve around meat. I think every school in america should have a day where there is no meat on the menu.

    November 5, 2009 at 8:34 pm |
  421. Jayme

In my opinion I think there should be an option for ethier having meat or not having it. I mean, meat is a good source of protein and vegatariens have to eat a lot of eggs and take protein pills to keep their body in good health. I understand that a person who feels strongly for animals wouldn't want to eat meat and they should have the option not to, it is their choice. We also can't forget those of us who like to eat meat, we have the right to choose what we eat too.

    November 6, 2009 at 9:53 am |
  422. ashton

yes. i would dedicate one day a week to going vegitarian, because most of the food is delicious and it is healthy for you. Having meat all the time gets sorta boring. All you need to do is eat only veggies and fruits for one day.

    November 6, 2009 at 9:58 am |
  423. Kacie

I am a vegetarian but i'm homeschooled so my opinion of this doesnt matter much. But to whomever says no meat=no protein is sorely mistaken because lots of things have protein in them.

    November 7, 2009 at 4:03 pm |
  424. chick8

i do think it should be on the menu just not everyday or every week plus that pizza they give us it is not even all the way cooked so that really is just not healthy for us childern that are still growing to eat like that the bad thing is our parents dont even know if it is all the way cooked or not

I think that the guy who cut his hair for his school team shouldn't be suspended because it is his hair, and it is just like shaving your head for cancer. What he did is showing school spirit, and the school wants the students to show school spirit. So why suspend someone who is showing school spirit?

    November 16, 2009 at 4:28 pm |
  432. Sandra

I don't think he should get ISS for just cutting his hair and its his hair !!!!he should do what ever he want's with his body and people should not accuse him for it, and come on!!! he is just showing off his hair, so we students have the right to wear or cut our hair the way we wanted to!!!!!!!! 🙂

I think that is good to have your veggies, but I think that this just going a little to far. You have to mean have to have meat too! Some people say this just a way for them to cut the cost and I am going with them. I think they are making a big deal iver the cost of things

    November 18, 2009 at 8:29 pm |
  435. Shemar

I think that it would be alright to go vegetarian atleast once a weak for a certain period of time only because vegetarians wouldn't go back and eat the food that un-vegetarians would eat.

    November 19, 2009 at 8:59 am |
  436. Heidi

Im kind of in between about this topic. We should be able to choose what we want to eat. But i also think i would be good for the vegitarians in school. Maybe by having it would show us how many different things we can eat without meat and how good veggies really are.

    November 19, 2009 at 12:26 pm |
  437. jenee

I think its wrong for schools to take away meat from everybody. If they had choices, like they could get meat or vegetables, or maybe even both, that would be alot better and there would be many more smiling faces!

    November 19, 2009 at 12:27 pm |
  438. Natalie

I think it is great that they are exposing the kids to different food. Its not everyday....just once a week. You CAN bring a cold lunch if you wish. People need to start eating more veggies – they too have protein. And just because you don't eat meat; doesn't mean you don not get protein. Personally i am a vegetarian and there are TONS of other ways to receive your daily nutrients.

    November 19, 2009 at 12:30 pm |
  439. Hannah

I think that it is a good idea but only if it actually has good vegetables. If they are just going to serve them out of a can than it looses almost all nutrition.
