Teen Violence
It was a hard story to watch, especially when you hear from the grandfather of Derrion Albert. The 16-year-old honor student was described as an "innocent bystander" when an off-campus fight broke out between two groups from his Chicago high school. Albert was killed in the fight.
I wanted to use this post to give you a place to talk about this story and the issue of teen violence. And if you're willing to share your thoughts on why it happens - and what can be done to stop it - we welcome your comments.

wow, that's so sad to hear. i feel extremely bad for the family of him. our prayers go out to them.
Teen violence is a horrible thing. Teens probably fight to show the other that he/she is the tough one.
i dont thik it was right for these people yo kill this poor teen at this time. he sounds like he was a straight A student.
Why was the street fight started in the first place?
I think that only wat to stop teen violence espeseily between high schools is for the rivil high schools come to gether and be freinds
I think teen violence is extreamly dangerous and is happening across the country.The one way i would try to stop it is to have a police car drive around the schools once or twice a day to see and make sure nothing is happening
I think the kids who were in the fight shouldn't have even been fighting eachother. Now that they were fighting with eachother they killed somebody else who wasn't even in the fight.
I think that the kids did this to the poor kid because he maybe had a friend who got in a fight. And they just wanted to get revenge, so they decided to really injure the kids best friend. Or maybe they just did this because he was walking there at the time and the kids just wanted to hurt some one. I think that people can start carrying more phones and maybe start getting life alert. It couldn't hurt to have to wear a necklace that could save your life.
I think teen violence happens because it starts with bad homes with physicaly or emotionally abused teens letting out their frustration in a horrific mannor. It can also start from bad neighborhoods, unbareable stress, or pear pressure.
i think its really mean that out of no where they would harm someone soo innocent..it a shame it really is ..i cant believe people would just comeout and do thatt.. she should seee how that feels
i think its sad that he would get beat to death when nothing happened between the groups and Derrion Albert. This kid did not do anything and yet he gets killed. Thats very upseting.
i think that it was very wrong for a innocent kid who did nothing to be killed...i think that there is a big problem with teen violence and that we should do something to help solve this issue! And i think that the kids that can be identified that was a part of this street fight should be put in jail then be put on probation and then have to do so many hours of community service. What they did was wrong and the should have to deal with the consiquences becuase we that derrion albert did.
I think that it was just one of those times when your in the wrong place at the wrong time or maybe it was gang fitting. I think that people should stop fighting and maybe be watched more closely, because if 16 yr olds are fighting bad enough to kill each other then obviously they were not raised right. I think that when kids get into fights at school they should take it more seriously and find out what is really going on....like seeing whats going on at home or fight out why they are so angry and wanting to fight.
I don't thing that it was right. That was really low i don't think gangs should be around without gang violence the world would definitely be a better place. If everybody would just get along The World Would Be A Better Place.
I felt a wave of sadness while watching this news report. I honestly think there is no way of completely stopping teen violence. All we can do is think of things to do to reduce these type of fights. I just hope that the kids learned their lesson on fighting, considering they killed an innocent boy who did nothing but succeed in his academics, and then all of a sudden one day it was all over for him... things like this make me irritated, especially when the child did nothing wrong.
have security there to make sure that fights dont break out and if they do the security can stop them. fights usually start cause of people runnin their mouth and being ignorrant.
I Think that everyone should get along and should not fight,But teen violence cant be solved everywhere even though it happens as we speak.
It would be secure to make sure that teen's are watched out for and are not involved in violence, people should take percutions and start worrying for their children even though the Teenagers might feel embarassed by it.
Teen Violence is a copy of Being Bullied and Abused by other Teens,
i think Countys should go to the High-schools and talk to teh teens abotu it and shoudl take lessons about it thats my resolution!

This is outrageous. I pity that humans can be so... inhuman. It's sad that anyone would do this. What is even the purpose of forming these "gangs"? It seems like they do it for their own amusement, and that is just plain sick.
I don’t like gangs and anything they do. I think the communities should be responsible for controlling them so that things like this wouldn’t happen. Those kids should be put in jail for a long time and be fined. These kind of things make me sick.
Fighting is not always bad. One guy has a problem with another or a situation calls for self defense a fair fight can help things. But this was far from anything fair. This was a gang fight, war, whatever you want to call it. Makes me think of two countries bombing each other and killing each other. Now that is violence.
i mean, think about what was going through the kids minds that were beating this guy to death. people arnt just born with natural hate and violence, they are raised in it, they grow up with it. that's all they know. i do feel bad for the boy tht lost his life, but i also pitty the poor kids that are raised to be such unintentionally hateful people
He shouldn’t have been killed all because he didn’t want to be in their gang. Because who was he hurting when he said no he didn’t want to be in their group. The boy really shouldn’t of even of been messed with because all he was doing was waiting on his grandfather to pick him up.
I think that this is a very sad and unfortunate event. This type of thing should never happen! Parents or kid's guardians can help prevent this kind of behavior by giving them support and encouraging them to do what is best. I don't see how this wasn't noticed by any adults when it was occurring, if these fights are on the rise, why would they not zone police officers to that area?
it was very cruel and cold-hearted that someone would do that to someone. i hope everyone who was involved with his murder never gets out of jail. That was so messed up. I don't see how someone could ever do that. Unfortunetly, that is extremely common and honestly i don't think there is a way to stop it. Some people will always act like that and don't take second thoughts on what people say or do.
Many teens are getting involved into the whole gang thing. They don’t know what they are getting their selves into until after they get in a fight like this one and either kills someone or they get hurt and are sitting in jail, hospital. If a parent cannot control their kid and they end up killing someone else’s kid then I think that they should have some type of punishment also. It is not okay to go around and do these types of things and i guess one day they will just have to learn the hard way. Although really that is the only way that they are going to learn. Law enforcement needs to step up and try to get all these "gangs" off the street and put them behind bars or somewhere else other than the streets where they are hurting others. Let them see what it is like when they are beating up on other kids and they cannot do anything about it.
That whole thing was just pure cruelty and as the story my teacher says it was over the victim not being in the game. I’m a teen which most people who post blogs are, I think we just keep learning violence from TV criminals and other bad influences which caused the death of the honor student.
Teen violence is escalating, a lot of parents blame it on video games but violent video games just give me a chance to do things that I can't do in real life. Innocent people are going to get hurt just like one got hurt, no killed here. More and more teens are forming gangs, what is the point in that; no one gains anything from a gang war or a fight. It's just stupid.
I think that this is a terrible thing that happened to the teenager. I think that this probably couldn’t be avoided that he was just at the wrong place at the wrong time. I don’t understand why he was killed he wasn’t even in the groups that were fighting he just happen to be walking by. Many people unfortunately die this way and we need to find a way to stop this violence and killing.
that was intense. i really never think about gang violence, because where i live nobody fights. it's all rumors and lies here, but never is there a punch thrown. i feel for the family of Derrion. this was a terrible mishap and i wish things like this didn't happen, but they do. he did the right thing by saying 'no', but who knew they would hurt him just as bad for choosing to stay out of it? that's just not humane.
I think it was very sad that an innocent kid like Derrion had to die in that fight like that. It was also sad and very wrong that those kids were fighting, but what surprises me most is that the teens had no reason at all to be fighting.
I think that this is a horrible thing.That one innocent kid should not have been killed.He didn't deserve that for such a good kid he was.The people that were fighting should be charged money and have to go to jail.
One student says it sucks. It happens a lot and mostly because of gang affiliation. Another student thinks that teens are angry. One student thinks that some groups of people are better then others.
I feel very sorry for the kids why did a kid get siverly beat up for nothing he was just minding his own buisness i mean really.

i think that it wasn't fair when that boy got beat up for no reason at all!!>.<! but that was no shock because who knows what will happen in the real world. Thing in life isn't fair but the thing i dont get is that why didn't he yell help because there had to be people aroud that area. ^.^
poor kid, i can't imagine dying at all. He never deserved it. im geussing hes walking, minding his own busniess and then suddenly gets beat to death. i feel upset, even from states away.

I think they should be making sure fights like this dont happen and have people on survalince. This way nobody will be hurt or have there lives lost.
Isnt it terrible how that teen died. He wasnt meant to die and he was innocent. I feel bad for that teens family. Especially the people in the Phillipenes

i think it is sad and horrible that this student died, and i wish they would stop because it is upsetting for the family.
I think it was very hard on the parents and grandparents that he died during a street fight. I also think street fights are stupid to do if you die.

WOW! kids shouldnt be fighting like this. and this kid was just an inncocent child stepping in. i cant believe how his family feels! and he was a good student and honors in everyhting.. but that doesnt matter, it matters that he was alive. and now hes dead. and thats just horrible. i can actually connect to this. my very close friends, their son, 2 years old. was forgotten in a casr by their neighbor who was driving him to daycare. he was left alone n the conditions of about 106 degrees inside the car. and when he was found un responsive. it was too late. and i knew him and saw him. and wow. but nevermindd that. im so sorry about the boy and his family
It was wrong for the them to kill albert he was inocent he did nothing wrong to anything or anyone.I would be very angrey and upset if that was my friend now his family and friends are probaly all angrey and upset.It is the worst to kill someone that is innocent.Albert was very inocent and they had no right to fight and end up killing him.

one of the reasons that fights happen is because a guys did something to his girlfriend and he did not like it or one of the guys or the group in this case is talking trash to the other group or person and that is how they usally happen and they do i at school to make them think that they are cool and get poppular cause they beat someone up
It always makes me sad when i hear about these things. Now every time i go to these bigger cities like Chicago i am always afraid that i'll somehow get mixed up in one of these fights.
Violence is violence. There is no magic bullet that will stop all violence in the world and there is no magic bullet to stop teen violence. People will always use violence against each other and it seems naïve to think that there is any surefire way to stop it.
I think more teenagers should stand up and tell more teachers, and or parents about what is happening around them, if kids are becoming more violent or if they know anything.
This is quite ridiculous like the grandfather said, where does all this anger come from? It’s unbelievable that kids are acting this way, not just kids but anyone at all, and it is a real tragedy that an honorable and respected innocent student had to die because of it.
Violance ant goin no were so just forget about it if you thinking about stopping it ..them kids in chicago was probly just defending there zone or somerthing the boy that got killed was just in the rong place at the rong time but that lets you know that anybody can get it..

I'm not for teen violence at alla and as much as people would like to stop it, it's not gonna happen. People fight when they get angry or have different views on something. not every one is going to agree, so there is no stopping it. Also to take all of the anger out of the world has as good of chance as noone laughing at Carl's puns. it's just not gonna happen.
These incidents of teen violence that are growing across the U.S. are really concerning me. It is horrible that all these kids are already in gangs. I am not sure of a clear way to stop teen violence, but one theory I have is attempting to rid all areas of gangs. I know it would be very difficult to do, but it would stop all these outbreaks and murders. I give all my sympathy to Albert's family.
Ok coming from a former student in the chicago-land area violent is getting out of hand. People fight over crazy things and somtimes it calms a students life. It brings shame upon me at times to say that im from Chicago just because of the violent that can be heard around the world. it's really crazy and is uncalled for there is really no reason to be fighting and killing over the things you here about.
I don’t really understand what happened to Derrion Albert, but I know that he was killed by a gang for no reason at all. It makes me sick inside to know a good student who refuses a gang offer can lose their life. I think someone needs to stop this teen violence. I have never seen or experienced anything as sickening as that.
People fight its human nature to fight. Not all people arre perfect, but we manage to prevent it.
I deffinently think that the violence should be stoped. Life isnt made for you to be put in fear that you cant even walk down the street without being attacked. Something should be done to make those gangs or groups of people stop doing these types of things. I think they should make the concequences bigger.
There is no reason that this should have happened. What happened to Derrion shouldnt have happened. This happened out of hate. These boys had no reason to do this. All i can think about is that these kids probably were not raised in a loving home. They probably had problems with a family life. It is the only explanation for all the hate inside them that it took to do this. The violence needs to stop. There is no excuse for it. NONE at all.
I think that teenage violence is a big problem, and not just necessarily in America’s cities. Teenage violence is motivated by many things, bullying, ignorance, and spread of gossip. I think that if both parties were able to have an option other than fighting, that they ought to take it. For example, if the option presented itself, I think the opposing parties ought to stop and talk about why they are pitted against each other.
I think it’s really sad that what happen about him. He just walking by and he didn’t know anything; he didn’t know who they are. I think for those kids that did the bad stuff should go to jail or to special place, so they can keep them in their eyes, and all of this would be better than this.
Teen violence is going to get worse as the years progress if there is nothing done about it. At my high school we have a program that eliminates violence and bullying to other students, and if we do get into a fight or harass another student our punishment is very strict.
I think all the people from the fight should go to jail. I feel bad for the family. The people that killed the kid should be in jail for the rest of his life.

I think kids hurt people because it makes them feel more powerful. Maybe they have a bad home to go to, and maybe they get beat up. It might make their self-esteem rise, like “Oh, I’m not the one getting beat up. I like it when I’m not the one who is.” It might also be because they get mob mentality. It’s a very weird thing where kids just snap.

Teen violence is occurring more and more often, even though some or most people not notice. We can never know for sure why they fight though. There just isn’t enough time in life to fight. For Derrion, he was just at the wrong place at the wrong time, and was very unfortunate.

I think its just terrible when things like this happen, its just not right for someone so young with a future ahead of them to die for no reason by the hand of someone their own age. Its just aweful and my heart goes out to the family of Derrion Albert in this sad time.
I think that maybe if we give these kind of people a little more attention then maybe they won't build up so much anger and be so violent.

what could stop the violence is somebody should stand up to them and show no violence some people should be punished for it did you see the results sombody was killed!we should put a stpo to it now! not later now! Violence is a big part of the world today. Most people fight because of gangs or skin color. I think fighting because of these things are acts of people that are uneducated.

there is a difference between an innocent bystander and a bystander. "teen" violence may be the effect but maybe the cause is "grown up" apathy. if the ADULTS would step in BEFORE it came to violence then there wouldnt be any teen violence. a teen caught in the middle of a fight is an innocent bystander but an ADULT who had the chance to stop the violence before hand and did NOTHING is a bystander and in my opinion is in a way, more at fault than the teens participating in the act of violence. maybe if the grown ups of the world would GROW UP and open there eyes... teens who die because of "teen violence" could get the chance to grow up themselves.
Teen Violence is bad for the community .Gangs are the main reason that many teens are getting killed.There are a difference in inocent and a bystander .Gangs are killing incocent people.The communty needs to cease gangs .I hope that it works.

As a nation we have tried to cover up teen violence like it was a little cut that just needed a band-aid and a kiss. But now we can not just cover the issue up with a band-aid and say everything is going to be okay, because it is not. If we just let stuff like this happens it is just going to get worst and worst. When innocent people get hurt because of ingnorance we can not just cover it up. It makes no sense that a 16-year boy does not get to go to college or make it pass the age of 16 because a group of ingnorant teens decided to beat him to death. As a nation we should better. To Derrion's grandfather I would just like say "just know that your grandson is in a better place, and I'm sorry for you loss."
I think that it is very sad that albert had to die like that,but whole youth fighting youth is just crazy because they dont know what they are doing!!!
I think teen violenceis a serious matter and its getting worse daily. Its sad that we as peers can't get along.What happened to that boy was rediculous and i'm ashamed to say that i am teen because i'll be catagorized as being violent.
This is a very tragic story and I think teen violence should not exist. Teen violence ends thousands of lives each year and is completely unnecessary. It endangers innocent bystanders like in the case of Derrion Albert. Gang prevention needs to be put in place as many kida re pressured into violence through such institutions.
This is an innocent kid that got hurt. This kid had done nothing to provoke violence or anything of that sort. Many people probably don't care that this happened. They might think that something like that wouldn't happen but here is proof that it can.
I think that the teen violence that every teen experiences happens because of certain people's situations at home, but what makes it worse is when they compare themselves to other people. The only thing that could really make a difference is if the punishment for violence was so great that no one would even pretend to show any violence to anyone.
I think that many of the violence in today’s community come from the violence in television shows and video games. Anyone can watch these programs but not everybody should. As it says before a show like that comes on, parental discretion is advised and should be taken seriously.
first off i think that this is horrible that this happened, but if he saw all of those people there why didn't he just wait or stay inside somewhere? Also, i think that this is just another example of gangs in schools which is all over the country, but this case just happened to be about a kid who was innocently killed in it.
What happened to the boy was not right at al. the boy had a lot of potential and just because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time he won’t get to fulfill his potential the way he would have been able to do. Teen violence is not right at all. Teens shouldn’t have that much hatred built up inside to hurt someone like they do. I don’t understand teen violence but it has to stop.
The gang should go to jail for what they did why they would beat up a human being he was hurting nothing he was just minding his own business I feel so sorry for his family they should say sorry to the family of what they did for that 16 year old.
Seeing this report saddened me. Someone that had nothing to do with the fight ended up getting killed from it, for teen violence or any violence at all don't bring someone else in there that doesn't want to fight. There was absolutely no reason that that fight should've happened in the first place.
I think that a lot of time bad things happen to the people who deserve it the least. You never really know why it does happen, but you just have to accept the fact that sometimes things that we wish wouldn’t happen do. This story is very sad. It is especially sad because he seemed like someone who wanted to do something with his life, and because of other peoples’ stupid mistakes he’ll never be able to do that.
I think that what happened was horrible and unforgivable. Youth violence is very significant and must be stopped. It is a sign of that those same children will grow up later to become criminals. We need to do much more avocation in school and communities to prevent it and we need to give harder punishments to youth who commit these crimes. If they don’t choose to stop it, the parents don’t choose to stop it, and the community does not choose to stop it then who will?
I think that it is a tragedy that Albert died when he had nothing to do with either group. Maybe people can try and help teens who do this type of stuff, and if we help them maybe they won't do it. Sometimes we can't stop what people do but we can try and help them make better decisions.

What happened to Albert was terrible! It’s really sad to find out that happened to someone who wasn't even part of the fight was killed. There is a ton of teen violence in the world. I think it starts in the home and that’s what influences these kids to fight. Maybe there should be more places were these kids can go to after school, a place that will help bring them up to be better people. I know there is no way to help everyone, but at least more will be helped.
My brother was in a fight and got his jaw broken. The fight was for no reason, it could have been avoided if the other guy would have just stopped and thought about it. My brother was the one that said I’m not going to fight but the other guy cheap shot him. Teen violence is getting out of control these days. People need to teach us either how to fight or why not to.
Stuff like this happens and its difficult to prevent. We need to stop the hate, but violence is sometimes inevitable.
I think that teen violence is caused from kids being put down for being different so they join a gang. This is not a very good reason to cause havoc and rage but it is for some.
Deepest prayers to his family. It's the worst when someone innocent has to get involved without doing a thing, then being killed. Teen violence is totally uncalled for, as most of the time it is for the craziest reasons why it starts. I'm not sure on a way to stop it, but if it could be stopped, that would be the best. This is a horribly sad situation. This kid seemed like an excellent kid, and he lost his life to a bunch of gang members who are lost in life and have nothing better to do than start gang fights and kill people... This gang violence is awful and the worst thing about this violence is that there is so many gangs that stopping gang violence is probably never going to happen...

I think that it's sad that a honor roll student has to lose his life when he had a great future ahead of him
Man i think that was messed up how teens could be so violent these days. I'm a teenager too, im 14 years old turning 15 this year and i dont even have that much rage that i end up killing an innocent person. Supposely a whole bunch of kids got arrested and i'm happy because, there is no way how a teenager is going to kill somebody and get away with it also if there were kids who didn't participate in the fight and they still got arrested, AMEN to that because, you cant just stand there and watch somebody getting murdered espeacially if their innocent! I understand if you didnt do anything because, you didnt want to get hurt as well, but if thats the case you shouldn't have been there in the first place. Also i think schools should have more security gaurds and school police officers gaurding their school and the students. And i really dont care if other students dont agree because, if students feel that they are responsible and mature then this sort of thing shouldn't be happening. These kids could be future bank robbers, murders, child abusers, ect.ect.ect. if we dont make a difference, take a positive and beneficial action then more kids will be corrupt and there would be no turning back!

That was cruel what they did to derrion Albert and no one should be treated that way. It's wrong that everyone gets hurt because of one disagreement. If you ask me that would be the worse thing I ever heard.
I believe that teenager violence is a growing problem in our society, and that it should be consulted. I also believe that it was very tragic for that teen, condolences to him. Teens are getting screwed up, some are being abused, so they take out their anger on other people. Others have no friends, and are depressed. This problem is more serious then most people think, the government should help us, but we the people must help out too. Think about all the lives lost in teen violence, it breaks my heart. T_T
I think that teen violence is a real issue and it is so sad that an innocent life was lost because of it.
It is sooo sad to see what our generation is doing today. I am from Chicago and I know what it's like there and it just makes me upset on how such an innocent person gets hurt like that. And it sickens me that people would actually do that. I pray that his family will try to get through this tragic time. I really hope that these teens will know that they did wrong and that they should be ashamed!
I think that the fight was started because some kids may have some problems at home and this is their way to get rid of that anger. Teen violence is terrible and it needs to be controlled by witnesses informing the police.
It's just sad when things like this happen. I wonder why people want to act like this. As this kind of thing keeps happening i want to know some ways i can help to make it stop.
I think that if the kids were off campus the school could do nothing about it. i think that teen voilence is very common. however, there are some teens out there who are bystanders and can't do anything about the fight. sometimes kids are just in the wrong place at the wrong time. i personally have never seen a group fight with mutiple people on one side. i have only seen a one on one fight and i was happy that i wasn't the one who died. i think that there should be more programs on teen violence because i think if kids hear about a story like this they will think twice before they start something that would start or fight or even fight back. teens need to learn that there is a ceartin extent before funny and fun become serious and even dangerous. this fight got to the point of where it took and innocent life away. these kinds of fights cause many deaths and the kids that are killed are not even over twenty and they had a whole life ahead of them. a life can be taken just like that. teens need to be more careful of what they do and think before they act!

Carl, teen violence is not hard to come by.. But it can be hard to stop. It all starts with a bit of teasing, then arguements, then.. They become Physical, it's always scary to see, an even scarier to be apart of.
I think that every generation seems to get more and more violent as our weapons get more and more advanced. We should stop handing out weapons and start handing out candy 😀
I cant believe somone killed him. I hope they didn't kill him on purpose.
This story is such a sad and horrible thing to hear and I think that the teens who started this fight have not had a good life so far. I feel so bad for the family and I just wanted to say that our prayers are with you.
I think that the people that started the fight should be in prison because they killed the guy and he did not desever that. And I feel bad for his family, they weren't expecting him to be killed for no reason. I pray his family recovers.

This was a very sad story indeed. A 16 year old Honor student who could have been one of the world's best doctors killed because someone else's foolishness. They should both go to jail for killing someone who wasn't even involved in the fight.

When I heard about this story I felt really sad and really bad. That is the worst thing that can ever happen to someone's life. I bet Albert was a very good guy and did really good in school. I bet Albert will be remembered by his family, friends and all through the world.

Like some people said, teen violence can come from a bad environment, bad frineds, or being critisized can make someone very mad. I do not think albert should of died. Albert was not in the fight. I think to help poeple they could change change there attitudes and control there anger problems. Alot of bad things happen in this world and that shouldnt of been one of them. Another reason I think the fight happened is because I am pretty sure most of the teens were African Americans. Why are all the african americans raised poorly or , raised from city schools? Alot of things need to change!
i believe that teen violence is a growing problem because more and more teens are getting interested in the concept of fighting. Although many teens don't think that fighting is a growing problem, i see it more as a issue that the government needs to solve. Quickly, because the more they put of the issue of teen fighting, another student or innocent bystander might die. How they can stop it is by maybe taking this kids story, and spreading it across America. So that teens see what might possibly happen if they accidentally get caught up in a fight. i think that this story is sad and i hope that the family lives through this tragic event. I hope that the kids who kill this poor boy are ashamed, and that they regret being in that fight

Teen violence is a problem. Teens that have poverty stricken childhoods find it hard to cheer them up, to get them motivated. So when they get mad at someone, or when they feel like bullying someone to make them feel as bad as they do, they take out their violence on an innocent schoolmate, an innocent bystander, an innocent best friend.
This is so sad...Were all acting like animals! Why does this have to happen? We are fighting amoungst ourselves, and therefore tearing ourselves and our country apart!
I have a friend who was bullied quite the amount of times. When she school was out she would cry her eyes out. One day she told me that she was being bullied and I told her to just ignore the person who was bullying her. Then she told me that her parent’s told her that too. After a few months she told me that she took my advice and totally forgot about the person who was bullying her. Whenever she saw the person who bullied her she got a sickening feeling in her but she went on with life. So the lesson is, if anybody bullies you just ignore him or her.
I believe any kind of violene is wrong, especially teen violence. Whether it's a student against a student, or an adult against a teen, it's not something anyone wants to be faced with. Teens have a hard time finding their place throughout high school and it's pretty much the stepping stones to our future. High school helps define ourselves as individuals and helps mold our characters. I think abuse or violence against us at this age has the most devastating effect. We're at an age where we can remember important things and something as tragic as being attacked, or killed. You would think teens would hear about all the gun fights and murders of kids their age, that they'd stop. I think it's something that should be confronted. My school has an anti-bullying meeting twice a month, it helps outcasts find connections with their classmates and finds alternative ways to face bullying/violence. They're really helpful!
It's very awful when there are those passing by seem to get stuck in the middle of an argument or fight and they get stuck in the middle of it. My prayers go out to family on their awful loss.

This is truly a heartbreaking story. Derrion did not deserve to by killed. One way to prevent teen violence is for the parents to actually ask their kids whats going on in school . Some parents come home late from work and dont go and ask their kids whats going on in life!!!!

I think we should have more hours in a school day . Think of all the parents that work till 5p.m. or even later, most of the kids are either put in after school care or go to a babysitters. So most kids are all ready in a school basically.

At my middle school, there is a gaurd andthe teachers are out at lunch time. I feel pretty safe at my school, but anyone could very easily be beaten up after school by the starbucks, or, heck, even in the middle of the street! I think in the elementarys there should be more anti-violence talk.

We shouldn't have longer or all year around.We need exersize sitting in school for hours isn't exersize.Summer is fun for us.We need to get away from school.Kids would not even go to scool for June,July,and August, because we need a break.Scool you sit around learning at home you get exersice.You can eat when you want.At school you starve until lunch.We dont have snack and we already starve until lunch.Longer school days will make us starve even more and we could get sick of not eating.

Teen violence should stop because I saw the video of what happened to the 16 year old and it was the most horrific thing I have ever seen. The sticks they were using to hit him and other people were the wood blocks from the rail road tracks. In all, we should seriously stop all of this fighting and killing because it has no purpose or meaning.
What i personally think makes the kids get into a fight is something stupid going on in school. I also believe that it happens because, Teen need to be feared they think if their feared then they can rule everybody. when someone stands u to them they get scared they think they will lose their power. Teen violence is rampant in our country, and I also believe it's a result of the lack of family values. Kids today are being raised without any morals or a faith to guide them with a conscience that would assist in showing respect to one another. The schools can't do it all; parents, whether married, divorced or single, need to do their job as well.

At our school, we don't have much violence. It's more like bullying and calling people "gay" which can be very hurtful. But then again, we will NEVER be able to stop bullying like that, no matter how hard we try. Our school has an on campus police officer, maybe that would help. Also, steroids are known for making people "temperamental" so they could also bring an drug dog to their school to check it out.

I think that media plays a big part in teen violence as well as pycological problems and social problems. People, of all ages, get the idea that being able to throw a punch and perform a round-house kick is just simply amazing. Television and movies imply that being able to fight makes you look tough and infinitely cool.

That was so "Uncalled for" for those high school students a.k.a young adults to jump that 16 year old boy that day.I blame the school, parents and the police for not coming to break it up, they should be ashamed of their selves to do such a thing. But we all know that now he's in a better place and everybody is sad but now he's happy and looking down and watching over his family everyday.

I felt a wave of sadness while watching this news report. I honestly think there is no way of completely stopping teen violence. All we can do is think of things to do to reduce these type of fights.
