Winning, Shutout or Not

It's not every day we blog about a "Before We Go" segment, but Wednesday's story was worth it.  Leading 46-0, a high school football team agreed to give up its shutout so that a player on the other team - a 15-year-old with Down Syndrome - could realize his dream to score a touchdown.

What would you give up a shutout for?

if i was on the winning team i would give him a touchdown because it must be hard dealing with down syndrome. i mean if it helps him fell good that he got one then let him! its not like ur giving up the whole game

I think that is the greatest thing I heard today. Way to go. That just made the winning team a double winner. That's TRUE sportsmanship. Keep it up.

That is something we should all realize. Be nice to others, and care about their feelings. I bet that the boy with down-syndrome is quite happy that he scoured a T-down. It's making someone's dream come true that helps you be a better person.

One touchdown is nothing compared to making someones dreams come true.

I think that was kind of risky both for the team & the player that got hurt

I would definetly give the shut out. THe team was winning 46-0, and the game was almost over. My sister has down syndrome, and I like to get involved with special Olympics and stuff like that. So I would give away the shut out.

I think that was a really good thing that the 2 teams let that 15 year old with Down Syndrome score a touch down just so he could fulfill his dream. I bet that made that one kid feel really good to know his dream has been filled and it's not everyday something like that happens.

I think what the winning team did was really great, I would hope I would do the same thing if I was in the same position.

I think it is great that his dream came true. I would have never done that. What the winning team did was great.

If I were winning by that much I wouldn’t hesitate to give up a touchdown. If it were close personally I wouldn't want to give up a touchdown, but I think what they did was great.

I think that it was very nice of the winning team to give up a shutout. If i would give a shutout to someone it would be because of them being new to the game and not knowing the game very much. I would also give it to them for it to be their first touchdown.

I would probably give up a shutout for a scenario of the magnitude or worse

I would also give up a shutout is it was that kid's dream to score a touchdown if I was in that position.

    Carl....
We did this for a young man at one of our high school football games who just happened to be on the opposing team. He was battling cancer and it was an incredible experience for everyone that attended that game! It was all set up by the coaches and the players. but nobody else knew what was happening. My only concern is that this young man in your video will find out that it was all a "set up" and it may take away some of the excitement that this young man has experienced because it's now national news.

I would give up the shut out so I could see somebody like that score a touchdown. And he is is probably really happy.

Yes, i would of gave the ball to him. I think that was a very good idea, and very unselfish. I think i would of been very happy if i were him.

I think the coach did the right thing to do. someone with down syndrome is very hard to live and when you play football. I would of gave hhim a chance

  27. Gianni

I think that what that coach did for that boy was great it raised his confidence and a shutout is not that big of deal anyway

I think that was very nice and i would want to do that for a kid who had down snydrome. It does not matter if you get a shoutout I would rather make a kid feel better.

    September 23, 2009 at 10:04 am |
  29. Lauren

I very much agree that was ever sweet. I think that the other coach understuded it.

I think it was definetely a good choice to let the down syndrome boy get the touchdown because anyway that you can make someone happy when there life is already hard is a great thing to do. I would have loved to see his face when that touchdown was scored!!!

i thought that the coach on the other team was sooooo nice to let the 15 year old get a touch down! if i was the boy who got the touch down, i would be sooo happy to have people can about me and cared about my dreams!!!!

  33. Rebecca

I think that the coach made the right choice to let the Down Syndrome student make a touchdown. In my opinion, it wouldnt really mater ayway because the other team was going to win either way.

  34. Thomas

I think that what the coach did for the kid with down syndrome was very nice. He wasn't giving up the game because there was no way the other team could win. If I were the kid with down syndrome I would go up to the coach after the game and thank him. That coach was very nice.

    September 23, 2009 at 10:06 am |
  35. Alina

I think it was really nice of the other team to allow the guy with Down Syndrome to score a touchdown when the score was like 0-49. I think that even in the heat of the game, it is nice to let someone on the opposing team score a touchdown.

  36. CASSIDY:)(:!

I think that what the coach did was very nice. I think i would do the same but just because i dont watch football so its not importaint to me. I am very glad that this kid with drown syndrome had a very nice chance and he took it and didnt let his team down.:)

  37. Sydney

I believe that this was a very nice, generous gesture. Both of the coaches had their heart in the right place and if we had more people that do the same type gestures the world would be a better place.

  38. George

It was nice to let him score a touchdown when he really wanted to even if they let him. Even though they lost i bet he was still very happy to do it!

  39. kendall

I think is a good opurtunity for the school and football team to show how kind they are and to help someone that needs it .Because people feel un equal about themselves when they have down syndrome so this is good for him to feel equal about him self with the other football teams.

    September 23, 2009 at 10:06 am |
  40. nikita

I think it was nice that they were willing to do that for a team they were going up against. It probly ment the world to him. I hope he injoyed his chance to shine!!

  43. Matthew

I think its nice of the coaches to do that for a kid with down syndrome. Down syndrome is pretty serious... Its nice to let the kid have his 15 minutes of fame.

    September 23, 2009 at 10:32 am |
  44. Sasha

I think that was really nice!! Being completely honest-I don't know if I would have done that!! Really touching.

I agree with the decision to let the person with down syndrome score a touchdown. I feel really bad for him. It must have made him feel good inside. I would have felt really good.

    September 23, 2009 at 10:36 am |
  46. lexa

yes because then the down syndrome player will actually feel like he is good at football as all other players even thougth he has down syndrome

I think it's awsome that the coach did that for the kid. I bet he was so happy that he scored a touchdown! 🙂

O my gosh i think that was the nices thing ever. I cant blevie that a football team would do that. That is so aperitave. I wish people would do that all the time , i would total do some thing like that .That was so cool !)

  49. PLUS class

One student said that anyone with any kind of disability should have their chance to live their dream out at least once. Maybe if a foreign exchange student who loves football, or any other sport that they don't have could be allowed to score.

    September 23, 2009 at 10:38 am |
  50. alexa/tommy

yes because it was his dream to score a touchdown

    September 23, 2009 at 10:38 am |

I think that the coach is a good guy so that the down syndromen kid can score a touch down .

I'm glad the coaches let the kid with Down's Syndrome score, but if he found out that he really didn't score without help, what would he think?

    September 23, 2009 at 10:41 am |

I think that the couch did the right thing by leting the kid score

    September 23, 2009 at 10:41 am |

I would do the same thing for the 15 year-old with down syndrome because it was his dream to score a touchdown.

    September 23, 2009 at 10:42 am |
  55. griffin

I think that was very nice of the opposing team. I think the kid with down syndrom deserved to score. On my personal opinoin They did the right think. SO i hope that kid with down syndrum feels really good.

    that waz beast

    September 23, 2009 at 10:43 am |
  57. billy

i think he was smart to do that. He made the kid feel good. His dream was to do that. Who cares about a shut out if you can help a kid in need.

    September 23, 2009 at 10:43 am |
  58. Emily

I think that the coach was extraordinarily kind to give up a shut out for a teenager with down syndrome. Not many coaches would do that for a kid. It realy doesnt matter if it is a shut out. All that matters is that everyone had fun. The team that had the most fun is the real winners. The teen with down syndrome probobly had the night of his life beacuse a coach was kind enough to give away a shut out. That is one of the kindest think I have heard about in my life. The other team won, so I dont see the need in having a shut out. That kid probobly feels extremely awesome for scoring a touchdown even thoguh he has down syndrome.

    September 23, 2009 at 10:43 am |
  59. john

I would not of gave up the shut out just because its really important

    September 23, 2009 at 10:44 am |
  60. aida

I think that it was an awesome idea that a football player with a down syndrom got to follow his dream if a person with out a disease can do it than he can too. There is no reason to not follow your dream.

    September 23, 2009 at 10:44 am |
  61. Caroline

I thought that this story was great! Even though the other team was going to win, it was very nice to let him score and fulfill his dream.

    September 23, 2009 at 10:58 am |
  62. Bryce

I would because he is disabled and the shutout is nothing and a disabled person has a dream of getting a TD or the team i would let him.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:03 am |
  63. xavier

no i would not you have to earn it it is a competition

    September 23, 2009 at 11:05 am |
  64. Jonathan

yes i would i can always try again to win another year

    September 23, 2009 at 11:07 am |

You shouldnt give up you should keep trying. You should get it in the future.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:07 am |
  66. Jonathan

yes i would let him because i can always try again next year

    September 23, 2009 at 11:08 am |
  67. sofia

of course but i wouldnt give up a shout out for no reason i would obiusly be concious that my team was wining and that that id deserved what he got, he had a dream and for one person to makes someones dream come true is nearly impossible sometimes but if you have a chance to make someones life happier thats a one in a lifetime because its a huge thing to be the one to make someones life happier like they say give to recieve so i would give a shoutout if it ment making someones life happier even though its just a tiny detail.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:08 am |
  68. Abel

I would have that was very kind of the other team

    September 23, 2009 at 11:08 am |
  69. Isaac

Well I think it was a good idea because that kid that scored a touchdown with a serious sickness does not get to enjoy a lot of special moments like that. It is very rare that kids like that get to enjoy special moments and he is also disabled. That was his dream to score a touchdown for his team.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:08 am |
  70. Alessandra,Vanessa,&Sydney

Alessandra: I think that was nice of the other team to do that. Besides, the other team was already winning so they need to at least give the other team a chance.

Vanessa: I think that it was nice of the team to pass the ball to a guy with down-syndrome. It has always been his dream to shoot a touchdown, and now, he has.

Sydney: I am not really that football smart but I do think that is was a good thing what they did for him.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:09 am |
  71. Damali

I would have done that for anyone. The other team was very thoughtful on making a kids dream come true. Also, the coaches were very thoughtful to let the kid have his moment even if his team was losing. That moment probably made the kids life!

    September 23, 2009 at 11:11 am |
  72. Kim

46-0 that is unbelievable! It would be so fun if I was able to be at that game.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:11 am |
  73. Brandon

I would give up the shutout, its for a good reason. I mean the kid has down syndrome and his dream is to score a touchdown. That other team made his dream come true. They did the right thing, I mean the other team still won but to let that kid score, that is really nice.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:11 am |
  74. xiomara

I think it was good that the coach was good to let the boy play. He had a dream and his dream got true. Even though heir team didn't won he score the only touch down of the team.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:12 am |
  75. citlalli

i think that that's nice. I think that I will have done the same thing. Because that was a dream that some one have and thanks to them is now realized. I think if you can help someone realized his or her dream you should do it.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:12 am |
  76. Deborah

When I saw the video about Matt, I thought it was very sweet from the other team to let him score a touchdown. I would've let him score too because if it was a kid's dream I would've let him have his moment.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:13 am |
  77. Dianira

I think that what the football team did was very nice because they help one of there team players score. Also thanks to that they help him accomplished his dream and that was very thoughtful.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:13 am |
  78. Zahida

i would have done the same thing , because i know what it feels to have a dream you can't make true.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:13 am |
  79. Irad

if someone is really sick and has any type of dream that i am allow to make it become true i would.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:15 am |
  80. Jack

I will give a shutout to someone that has never played in the team. Also if he is sick of something and cant do that much things.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:15 am |
  81. Pedro

If I had the chance of giving up a shutout for a cause like that then I would because its for a good cause. Also if tis to help someone to realize their dream then it would not just give me a good feeling, but it would also give them the chance to realize their dream, and thats really nice.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:15 am |
  82. christopher

I would give up a shutout to for someone in a physically challenged position or a mentally challenged position.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:16 am |
  83. René

The video about Matt, I think it was really nice of the other team to give him a shutout to score a touchdown which was hi dream. I would give a shutout to someone who is about to die.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:16 am |
  84. Meghan

This story is really good, it was so nice of the other coach to let the boy with down syndrome score a touchdown.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:17 am |
  85. Alina

As my friend Zahida said, i would have done the same thing because the poor guy deserves the same chances and opportunities as any other person. Also because everyone deserves to acommplish their dreams.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:17 am |
  86. Paulette

I think that this story is great and i think that it was very nice thing that they did that for him. I would have done that for him. What i would do is well if i was in a sport i would have let him because if that was his dream to score a touch down. I would wright a shut out for any one with autism because it would be a realy nice thing to do for a person with a dream of scoreing a touch down.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:17 am |
  87. Stephanie

I think letting a kid with Down Syndrome score a touchdown was a great thing to do. I am pretty sure that that was his dream come true moment. 🙂

    September 23, 2009 at 11:17 am |
  88. jose

I will give a shutout to some one who has down syndrome, and that he never scored a touchdown on the hole season and that he finally scored all the touchdowns to win the game.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:17 am |
  89. kristal

i would do the same thing, if i had to give up points for someone who is struggling.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:17 am |
  90. Rifaat

I think that it was nice of them to let the kid with down syndrome score a point, but what if the kid didn't really have down syndrome,

    September 23, 2009 at 11:18 am |
  91. andrew

it was a good thing to do because it was that kids dream to score a TD and that kid has down syndrome
and the game was already a shutout so it was a good thing to let the kid score a TD.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:18 am |
  92. mia(:

i think that was really sweet of the boys on the team to let the boy with down syndrome score the winning touch down. Im shocked the highschool boys would acctually be good sports and let the boy do that! it was very nice. (:

    September 23, 2009 at 11:19 am |
  93. eemmily. (:

I would give up a shutout for someone that had a genetic disorder, or someone that wanted to give up and didn't feel they could achieve something. I think what the other team did was very thoughtful, and generous.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:19 am |
  94. Christina

I think that the coach should not have PURPOSELY let the kid score. Even if he had downsyndrom! If I were him, I would want to score because I did it my self, not because the other team felt bad for me. I would take that as an insult.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:19 am |
  95. kayla

I think what they did was really nice of them. I would have done the same thing. I also respect them for doing that. That was a true act in kindness(:

    September 23, 2009 at 11:19 am |
  96. sydney

yea i would totally do that thats a way of showing generosity and also a lot of compassion and if i was part of the other team i would feel really good inside cause i did something good

    September 23, 2009 at 11:19 am |
  97. alan

that was very cool that they did let the kid do that. so if the kid was on that team did he score the last touchdown and why diddint the other people diddnt do anything ?

    September 23, 2009 at 11:19 am |
  98. jessica

If i was in a sport i would give a shutout to a kid who has problem because i would want him to feel better about himself......its nice to tell someone win ones in a while....

    September 23, 2009 at 11:19 am |
  99. Victoria(:

If i had to give up points or anything for someone who's struggling, I would because I've been able to do everything that someone who struggles mentally can't and if it would help the person, I would.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:20 am |
  100. christian

I thought it was nice that the other team let him score a touchdown knowing they could have a shutout but they let thus kid score probably his only touchdown.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:20 am |
  101. Katrina

I would give a shutout for a kid who hasn't sparred before but wants to give it a try. Though it may be me up to go I'd give up my place so a kid could try something new. Even if they might not take it on or know the right ways to throw they could experience what it's like one to one against another person.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:20 am |
  102. Rub3n

if i was the coach of the football team i would defenitly let the 15 year old win. it was his dream and dreams are meant to be reached. i would give up a shutout for the same exact reason.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:20 am |
  103. Summer

It was a really nice thing when the other team let the boy with Down Syndrome get his dream touchdown. I would give a shutout for someone less fortuate then I, either someone with a special nedd or someone disabled. It is a good thing to do.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:20 am |
  104. melissa :)

i think that was a very nice thing to do from him. because he might was so proud for himself. and that was a very good thing to do to the kid if i were there i would had let him do that because that is very nice thing to do. 🙂

I think that what the coach did was very nice and i think that if i had down syndrome i would deffinitly want to score that touchdown.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:20 am |
  106. Trisha

I think it was good that the coach let the guy with down- syndrome score. Sometimes winning isn't everything. 🙂

    September 23, 2009 at 11:20 am |
  107. Emigdio

I will give a shutout to help a kid who really wanted to make a touchdown in his whole entire life. Who was sick and in special Ed. So yes I will give a shutout to a kid who wants it.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:20 am |
  108. Daniella

I think that i would do a shutout for kids that have cancer and would to play soccer. if they practice and practice and they loosing 3-0 i would give them a shutout so all the that they would be for a reason to at least score a goal that would be my shutout for!!!!!!1

    September 23, 2009 at 11:20 am |
  109. Zach

I think that it was the right thing to do since its high school football. it was a nice thing thing to do since the kid had down sydrome.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:21 am |
  110. Taylor

I think that the couch was a good sport letting the kid who had down syndrome score his first touch down and to let him feel good about him self.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:21 am |
  111. Karli

I think that I would have let the guy make a touch down and let his dream come true. Thats really sick that people or coaches can just make something ike that happen for one kid. God has a plan for that kid's life and what ever it takes to get that kid he will help him and God made one of his dreams come true by the coaches putting the kindness in their hearts. Its truly amazing.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:21 am |
  112. Mary

It's nice that the coaches gave up their shout out for the boy.Evey kid has a dream and special need kids are just the same as other kids. From my opinion I think that other teams should do this as well. Special need kids like to participate in sports too they like to be included. So I want to say that it was cool what the coaches did for the Down Syndrome.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:21 am |
  113. Michelle

It was really nice that the other team agree to let the kid score a touchdown, because that was like his dream! In my point of view if i was in a sport and their was this kid that wanted to play and score a goal i would be happy to give up my spot for him.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:22 am |
  114. :)

    that was nice of him.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:22 am |
  115. Eliza

I think that was a very nice gesture for the coach to do letting the kid with Down syndrome score a touchdown even though it was giving up there shut out. I would have done the same thing if I was the coach. Winning isn’t everything but being a good person is.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:22 am |
  116. mausam and erica

we think it was nice of the other coach to let him score the touchdown even though in sports you are supposed try your hardest. It was nice because the person with the down-syndrome dreamed of making that touchdown happen, and it happened.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:23 am |
  117. Cassandra

I would give a shutout to make someone else dream come true. Many people like the team that let the 15-year-old score a touchdown wouldn't do something like that. Some teams/athletes are too competitive that they wouldn't do something make someone feel that special. This shows how much the winning team cares about others.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:23 am |
  118. Daniella

I think that i would do a shutout for kids that have cancer and would like to play soccer. if they have practice and practice all days and they would be loosing 2-0 i would give them a shutout for the team so all the that they did would be for a reason to win. At least one or more goals that would be my shutout for!!!!

  119. Chelsea

If i had the chance to i would because its the right thing to do. Helping someone accomplish their dream is something you can never forget. I play foot ball and i think that is one good way to show sportsmanship.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:25 am |
  120. hector

I would give a shutout so i could help the boy that has down syndrome because it would help his life alot better and i would fell good because for helping a boy of that condision.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:25 am |
  121. Ramon

I would give up a shutout for the same thing if someone that is sick or ever dreamed of scoring.I would give a shutout to a boy with Down Syndrome because it will make him happy and give him a dream he always wanted.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:26 am |
  122. Victor

i would have probably done the same thing to help a person with down syndrome fulfill their dream. it wouldn't matter to me anymore to get a shutout and just give him a chance. everyone should be treated the same and fairly.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:26 am |
  123. Anissa

I would give up a shutout to make someone else' dream come true, if that was something he/she always wanted to do. Most athletes wouldn't have let that happen but it shows how much compassion this team had to make a 15 year old boys dream come true. That was a very generous of them.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:27 am |
  124. Jair

I Would gave that shutout for that kid.Something he can remember forever. And make him feel better.I would also give a shutout for like someone who is like has a team noncomplete

    September 23, 2009 at 11:27 am |
  125. Benjamin

This team did a good dead in helping this person realize his dream. If i was the Head Coach of that team, i would have given up the TD too. I would give the shutout up because you are already losing, and you are helping somebody that society has pretty much separated from everyone else.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:27 am |
  126. Cristian

I would make someone accomplish their dream. When someone accomplishes their dream, it is something they will never forget. I play sports and I know what that feels.

the flood was reallly high and the two guys had to float on matresses.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:29 am |
  128. Cynthia

My shutout would be to make someone else dream come true. Many people liked that they let a 15-year-old boy to play and make a touchdown. Was very kind of then to do that. It showed that the team cares about others and not just winning.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:29 am |
  129. Anthony

If we were in a sprinting race and i was against a handicap person i'll let him win so he can feel better.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:30 am |
  130. BOWER

I think giving him a free point instead of having a shutout is nice. They gave a kid his dream.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:32 am |
  131. David

I think letting him score was okay. I would give up a shutout if the other team's player never scored ant it was his last year or if the player had a terminal illness.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:33 am |
  132. Pamela

I would let the guy do the touchdown because then he will feel good and then that would make me a better person and since I would let him get the touchdown that would probably make the team feel good, that at lest we made a touchdown.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:36 am |
  133. Cladia

i think i would, i would do a shout out to kids that have cancer and would like to play sports. i would do anything in my power when i grow up just so kids could play sports and feel good. everyone deserves to me happy.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:36 am |
  134. Bill

    Very nice story.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:37 am |
  135. Steve

I think what the other team did was really kind, I I hope I would be able to do the same sort of thing if I was in the situation.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:38 am |
  136. REBEKA

    okkk.

    September 23, 2009 at 11:43 am |
  139. Kinsey

I think that letting a kid with down syndrome was a grest thing to do.because the other coach accepting of letting the kid score a touchdown let the kid reach his dreams.

    September 23, 2009 at 12:02 pm |
  140. rachel

i think that ity was nice of the other coach to let the kid score because he could of siad no we have other things to do the boys are tired just do it next game or whatever. It was very nice to let him score and the kid was oviously very happy. :))

    September 23, 2009 at 12:03 pm |
  141. Garett

I think the coach did the right thing to to let the kid score. It was his dream to score a touchdown. He was probally so happy to him.

    September 23, 2009 at 12:03 pm |
  142. Maria:))))

i think that it was amzing that they would do that for him. It made the child feel so much better about him selve. It was his dream to make a touchdown and he finally got it. it was a shut out game it wasnt like it was going to hurt them. im realllllly glad that the coach let him make the touchdown!!

    September 23, 2009 at 12:04 pm |
  143. randy

I think what the coach did was very nice. They really made the kid happy and alot of coaches probibly woudent do that.

    September 23, 2009 at 12:04 pm |
  144. regan

I would definently do that to make a persons dream of scoring a touchdown. That would be something that I would do without even thinking about it. That was very nice of the coaches, I belive that they deserve a round of applause! Great Job Coaches!

    September 23, 2009 at 12:04 pm |
  145. andrew

I would give anything. Football is only a game and it is always fun to see someone do somthing good. Thats was very nice of the coach. Many down syndrom kids dont get the chance to accomplish their dreams.

    September 23, 2009 at 12:04 pm |
  146. rachel

Maybe one day the kid will grow up to be a professional and score many other touchdowns.

    September 23, 2009 at 12:04 pm |
  147. Benjamin

I think that it was a excelllent choice for the winning coach to let the kid the always dreamed of socring a touchdown even though that did brake their shut out. I believe that it is really important for everyone to have their dreams come ture.

    September 23, 2009 at 12:05 pm |
  148. Rachel

I think that it was a really good idea to let the kid score a touchdown. Im on a softball team and i would have let someone score if they wanted to.

    September 23, 2009 at 12:05 pm |
  149. cole

I think the coach was nice to let him win and that was good that he did that instead of not leting him not leting him crush his dreams.

    September 23, 2009 at 12:05 pm |
  150. Madi

I think the teem did a very good thing. The fact that they let the loosing team get a point was so nice. And it probebley ment the world to the jid/teen with down sindrum. The kid with down sindrum wil probebly remember it all of his life. And the fact that the winning team choose to do that is good. Becaause some of those players may be other people athere schools, romatle. And the kids may have beet up the kid so now they might not

    September 23, 2009 at 12:06 pm |

  153. gabriel

i would let hte kid get a short out cuause i would want his dream to come true even though im giving them a touch down.

    September 23, 2009 at 12:07 pm |
  154. Nikita

Yes I think it is fair. The reason I think it is fair because they should let him because he tried realy hard.

    September 23, 2009 at 12:07 pm |
  155. jasmine

I don't think that they should have let him make a touchdown because that's not one of the rules that you can do. And it's kinda unfair to the other players that wanna make a touchdown. Just because they have a disability doesn't mean that they get special treatmeant from the other players on the team. But i do think that was nice of them to let him exceed in his dream and maek it happen.

    September 23, 2009 at 12:07 pm |
  156. Marissa

I would not give them a shoutout because if the team thats wining work so hard tho win , the other team needs to work harder so they can win without asking for a touch down.

    September 23, 2009 at 12:08 pm |
  157. colin

i wouldnt haVE SAID ANYTHING I WOULD HAVE JUST LEFT IT ALONE FOR A LONG TIME AND NEVER TOLD ANYONE THE WHOLE TIME THAT I WAS ALIVE EXACPT FOR THE PEOPLE THAT ALREADY KNOW ABOUT IT AND THAT IS MY PARENT AND ANYONE THAT THEY TOLD THAN YA

    September 23, 2009 at 12:14 pm |
  158. Avery

I think that was good sports man ship to give up a touchdown for someone elses dreams when their is a door to your dreams you should take it

    September 23, 2009 at 12:19 pm |
  159. JOSH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe if it uhhhh..... if that peorson was goiing to die and that was their dieing wish theni would give a shutout for them.

    September 23, 2009 at 12:21 pm |
  160. Talyon

i think that was very nice

    September 23, 2009 at 12:39 pm |
  161. shelby

i would do something like that for a boy that wanted to score a touchdown. If i had down syndrome ,and i wanted to do something extravagant like that i would want someone to help me do it. I may not be able to do myself so if they were willing to help i would say go for it. You never know whats going to happen in the future ,so I live life while you can. Life's to short to be anything but happy.

    September 23, 2009 at 12:59 pm |
  162. Joplin

We think that we would definitely let the other team score a touchdown. We feel like even though Matt's team did not win, he really was able to have a personal victory. Way to go other team.

    September 23, 2009 at 1:17 pm |
  163. riley

i would let him score we have a kid with down syndrome in are school

    September 23, 2009 at 1:18 pm |
  164. Andrew

if i were the coach i would let that kid score because a shutout isnt that important if people know that team isnt that good. i would also let him because he deserves a chance to score a touchdown because he has worked so hard with the team, probably harder then any of the others so he deserves to score.

    September 23, 2009 at 1:20 pm |
  165. Conner

I think that I would give up a whole game for a kid with a disability to score a winning touchdown. Just giving up a shutout is way less difficult to do, but to make someone feel good about themselves is an awesome feeling to have.

    September 23, 2009 at 1:20 pm |
  166. Hank

If I was up by 46 six and another coach came up to me and told me that a kid on his team had down syndrome and their dream was to score a touchdown I would give up the shutout. This would probably be the only chance for him to score and he would probably remember it his whole life. I would give up the shutout.

    September 23, 2009 at 1:20 pm |
  167. Souki

Yes, even if the student did not have a disability I would let some one take the Touchdown.

    September 23, 2009 at 1:20 pm |
  168. Ian

I would definitly let him get the pointe who cares if we dont get a shutout well still win.

    September 23, 2009 at 1:21 pm |
  169. Beth

I would give up a shut out for a kid who had special needs, because he would be pretty sad if if were never to score a touchdown. If a kid wanted to realize his dream, I would let him have it.

    September 23, 2009 at 1:21 pm |
  170. shaun

I would give up the shutout to let the kid with Down Syndrome so he could live his dream my team still won, and it made his day.

    September 23, 2009 at 1:21 pm |
  171. sarah:)

I would let him score even if that would cause us to lose the game , just so he could live his one dream that night and i would feel realy good after i got to see his face after the touch down.

    September 23, 2009 at 1:22 pm |
  172. Jacob

If i was the winning coach I would have let the kid score. The team was 47 – 0 its not like it would be that bad. Plus its highschool not the NFL it dosent count for that much. So even if my team was winning I would let him.

    September 23, 2009 at 1:22 pm |
  173. Dustin

I think what the coauches did is conciderate. I would of did same the thing also. But if he sees this he may feel bad that they let him cause he thinks he realy scored. Also i think the coaches are really nice and if they didnt let him score they would feel bad

    September 23, 2009 at 1:22 pm |
  174. Jacob , Tara

I think that was good sportsmanship jacob,I think that it was really good sportsmanship because he wanted to do that all day, tara

    September 23, 2009 at 1:22 pm |
  175. luigi

Yes I think the other coach should have let the player with down syndrome score a touchdown because his dream was to always score a touchdown and the coach of the other team gave him that dream.

    September 23, 2009 at 1:23 pm |
  176. Jakob

I think that what the highschool football team did a good thing for the student, and I would do the same thing for the student because I have a cousin with down syndrom.

    September 23, 2009 at 1:24 pm |
  177. nmoah

i think if i was a coach i would do the same thing

    September 23, 2009 at 1:24 pm |
  178. Deanna

Yes i would because some people have dreams and people wanna make them come true and if he is in down sindrum atleast let him score aq touchdown so he can have his dream come true anyday i would help him or her

    September 23, 2009 at 1:25 pm |
  179. kate

    yes because mat has downcindrome

    September 23, 2009 at 1:25 pm |
  180. Nick

I think that it was right to let him score a touchdown because they were winning already so they just let him and it was a nice thing to do.

    September 23, 2009 at 1:25 pm |
  181. chardonay

Yes i would because evey one should live their dream and a person with down synfrome should always life theis dream

    September 23, 2009 at 1:25 pm |
  182. Bailey

I think that was REALLY nice of the team[s] to do that!
If i were in charge of the coaches then i would probably and most likely do the same.
His coach was VERY nice to make a deal with the other team more or less the other teams coach was very nice!!!

    September 23, 2009 at 1:59 pm |
  183. Steve

I think what the winning team did really respectable. I hope that if I'm in the same circumstance, that I can act as honorably.

    September 23, 2009 at 2:14 pm |
  184. Haley

He did a great deed for his teammates. he gave them a helping hand.

    September 23, 2009 at 2:33 pm |
  185. PLUS class

The whole class felt that giving up the shut out was the right thing to do. One student did say that it kind of takes away from the game a little but it was still the right thing to do.

    September 23, 2009 at 2:40 pm |
  186. Amy

I would give up a shutout for someone who has Down Syndrome I would give up a game for that person to score a touch down. It would be the least that I could do for someone like that! I would feel soo good for doing that.

    September 23, 2009 at 3:07 pm |
  187. Nyssa

I would give up a shutout. It's a very small thing to give for a kid who has such troble in life. Why not fullfill a boy's dreams?

    September 23, 2009 at 3:07 pm |
  188. kater

his coach wanted him to score a touchdown

    September 23, 2009 at 3:08 pm |
  189. sean

we have a kid in our school that has down syndrome

    September 23, 2009 at 3:11 pm |
  190. Miranda

I would definately let someone like that score a touchdown because he should live up to his dreams too. I just think it would be the right thing to do for someone like that, and also feel good about doing it.

    September 23, 2009 at 3:18 pm |
  191. zack

of course. It's his dream. YOu're already going to blow them out. How about doing something nice for him?

    September 23, 2009 at 3:26 pm |
  192. Tuan

I would do that to Matt to please him and fulfill his dream. Think about it, if his dream won't come true, he will be sad forever, which is not a good thing I would do to my friend.

    September 23, 2009 at 3:33 pm |
  193. Hunter

It was respectable, but I really don't see 15 year old being happy to learn that people let him. What I'm trying to say is not being said the right way.....Anyways, I think it was a very nice and respectable thing, but how would he feel when he learns they just gave it to him?

    September 23, 2009 at 3:47 pm |
  194. Emma

what the winning team did i thuoght was really nice and he deserved the touchdown

    September 23, 2009 at 3:55 pm |
  195. laquontics

I would have "LOVED" to give him a change to feel good about hisself instead of always felling down beacuse of his sickness

    September 23, 2009 at 4:02 pm |
  196. Nigel

I think it was a good thing they did for that boy he needed a pick me up. But I also think that the players would be angry with having to give up their win but I think personally it was one of the nicest things anyone could of done for him

    September 23, 2009 at 4:16 pm |
  197. Taylor

I think they did a good thing by letting that player make his one and only football dream come true by letting him score a touchdown and giving up the shutout.

    September 23, 2009 at 4:16 pm |
  198. Joseph

they should let them try to run a touchdown if they can cathch good.

    September 23, 2009 at 4:21 pm |
  199. Stavo

I think it was a noble thing to do. A simple goal like scoring one little touchdown can go along way for anybody, not just people with disabilities.

    September 23, 2009 at 4:21 pm |
  200. Josh

Wow...What a great thing to see. Now that's true sportsmanship!

    September 23, 2009 at 4:32 pm |
  201. Ally

I think it was a great idea for his coach and the other team to let his dream come true. Very mice story.

    September 23, 2009 at 4:43 pm |
  202. Jared

I think that it was very cool because all that kid wanted to do was score a touchdown and he got to do what he always wanted to do and that was very nice.

    September 23, 2009 at 4:47 pm |
  203. Thomas

I feel that the other team, giving up their shutout, is something that really touches people, and helps them realize that things like this are still possible.

The boy had down syndrome, a mentally crippling disorder, and the other team gave up a complete and total win, a shutout, so that this boy could score a touch down, one of his dreams. He could run down the field, ball in hand, and fulfill one of his dreams. And the winning coach, and the winning team, were willing to let a touchdown be scored against them, for the only reason of this child's down snydrome and wish.

    September 23, 2009 at 4:48 pm |
  204. Makae &TR& Amber

Yes we have a kid that has down syndrome and can shoot 3 pointers, makae.I think that was really nice of the other coach to do that for the other coach to do that,TR.I agree with Makae and TR.

    September 23, 2009 at 4:49 pm |
  205. Alex

I think that was really nice for the two teams to do something like that, for someone to have Down syndrome and not be able to do things that we take for granted. I'm sure that kid would be talking about that for some time after that day.

    September 23, 2009 at 4:55 pm |

i would because i know some people with illness like that, but my teacher said he wouldnt because he doesn"t know what down syndrome is and we told him and he still siad he wouldn't

I think that the coach did a very supprtive and heart warming thing to give that boy (Matt) a chance at his dream. Everyone deserves that!

  209. melissa

I think that was the sweetest thing a football team could do. I am sure that he will never forget that game in his life. He will all ways remember that team and coach.

  210. Kelsey

I think that it was wonderful that both team cooperated and allowed Matt to score. If i was Matt I would be so happy that I scored. This is a great thing that happened to Matt and I think his coaches need to be thanked. Matt seems amazing. Keep it up boys.

No because we need some troops here for defense if we have an attack.

    September 23, 2009 at 5:44 pm |
  212. alez

I think the coches did the right thing letting him score

    September 23, 2009 at 5:48 pm |
  213. Carly

Of course I would. If I knew that he had down syndrome, I would without hesitation. That boy needed to realize, and set an example for others with down syndrome, that he could set a goal and reach it. Many people in the world have down syndrome, and people tease them and bully them about it, so they think they can't do anything. But this boy, even though the other team let him, knew he could. I would give up a shutout for him.

That was one of the nicest thing some body has

in a heart beat i would give up a touchdown. not only is it respectable, but it is caring. the winning team showed great sporstmanship... good looking you guys

    September 23, 2009 at 7:03 pm |
  216. Andrew

I think that was the nicest thing in the world for the other team to do. They helped that boy fulfill his dream by giving up their shutout. If i was in the same situation I would have even given up the win for that boy.

    September 23, 2009 at 7:31 pm |
  217. Jacqueline

I would diefenitly give up a play for a person on the opposinging team with a sickness or disability because it would make them really really happy and they would be so proud that they scored the only points for their team for the game!
P.S those teams in the 'Before We Go' section, it was really nice of you to do that for him and it is a very good sportsmanship example for all schools, teams, teammates, sports players, athletes, and anyone else who dose not fall under those categories (;-) (wink wink)

    September 23, 2009 at 7:48 pm |
  218. Hugo

I yhink it was pretty nice from the other team to let that guy to make his dream come true

i thought it was really cool that his coach put him out there! i would do tha same thing. =)

    September 23, 2009 at 8:14 pm |
  220. Ethan

It's not really a touchdown if the other team let the kid have it. Did he really acomplish something? It could be compared to moving out of the way to give someone a clear shot at the goal in soccer, or letting him make an easy layup in basketball. They were trying to be nice, but if I really wanted to score a touchdown, I would want to earn it.

    September 23, 2009 at 8:22 pm |
  221. Jared

I personally play football myself, and it would be spectacular if i scored a touchdown. The league I play in has a weight limit and I am 1 pound over so I couldn't run the ball anyway. If I were to take this into the opposite team's coaches perpsective, two-weeks ago I played a crude team with a nasty coach, and if our team had a disabled player, and our coach asked if he could let him run a touchdown that coach would have said N-O. If you ask me though, I will simply say, "Sure"

    September 23, 2009 at 8:33 pm |
  222. Alex

I would let a person who dreamed of scoring a touch down get one and I would give up the shutout, its just one touch down big deal.It was very nice of the other coach to agree to give up the shutout.

  223. Emma

Many in my class who played sports agreed that it was acctually bad sportsmanship to just let him win like that. They also said that the sportsmanship would only be good when you acctually have the glory in winning against a challenge. Under his circumstance, I thought is was absolutely touching that they gave a kid some glory–to his point of things. I mean, seriously. Let the kid have some fun. He isn't thinking that he only got that touchdown because the others just handed it to him... He got the glory, in his mind. Isn't that what counts? He won a game, that's what he wanted. I know people like him, and something like that, that happened to him that day was amazing to him!! He felt the intensity of victory! He felt the challenge! He had fun! In my opinion, my fellow sporty classmates' opinions don't mean anything. Way to go, kid!

    September 23, 2009 at 9:04 pm |
  224. Daren

I think that it was a great gesture... but i would only do it if asked otherwise i would see it in the same way as letting a 5 year old win a game of monopoly, It would spoil them and make them pout every time they didn't after that. Sorry for sounding so cold.

    September 23, 2009 at 9:05 pm |

    Yes i would

In 6th grade our football team was winning 37-0 and in the 4th quarter we let the other team score a touchdown. They felt amazing, some of the other teams in the league beat them 70-0 and kept their starters in at the end and showed no mercy. When the touchdown was scored against us somebody took a picture of the kid scoring and it was posted on the front page of the league's website. But, that story was not as good as this one because the kid had Down's Syndrome

In the world we live in today, people with disabilities don't get the chances they should. I think it was so wonderful that that team did that because that wonderful young man was able to realize his dream!

I would give up those 6 or 7 points so that someone can relize his dream of making a touchdown. In the end its just a sport, and thats all that counts.

That flooding was horible. A lot of people must of suffered from that flooding. I will help the football player because he's sick and not well. And for with the U.N. Barack Obama and the Chinese president should team up with each other.

it was nice for the other team to give him the touchdown but if you were that guy and you found out about that dont you think you would be a little angry because you didnt actually get the touchdown it was just given to you but i have to agree it was nice.

What the winning team did was great ! They were nice enough to help someone with down syndrome to let him score a touchdown. I would also do something as kind as that

s thing i will give a shutout for is while i am playing world of warcraft and we are dominaiting the other battlegrounds team i let them capture our flag once or twice so the team doesn’t think it's horrible. if i also have the chance i could tell the other team saying nice or good job

    September 24, 2009 at 9:12 am |
  243. Tim

I would let Matt score because he should deserve his first t.d. Let him have his moment and score at least once. That's what i would do.

I think letting that kid scoree oa touch down is basicly letting him score his dream which is a very nice thing to do.

    September 24, 2009 at 9:14 am |
  246. Joahua

I think that nice for the football team to let the player have a chance at making a touchdown. I think that the other team was nice enough to do that. I would give a shutout so that player will have his dream come true.

    September 24, 2009 at 9:15 am |
  247. Kayla

I think that what the winning team did was extremely thoughtful. They were winning 46-0, and obviously the other football team would have no chance beating them. But even though they defeated the other football team, they let a player who had down syndrome make a touchdown. I think that this is a true heartwarming story. I would have done the same thing, except I am not on a football team! 🙂 But if something like this were to come up in my life, i would totally make their dream happen. 🙂

    September 24, 2009 at 9:16 am |

I believe that what the winning team did was courageose, nice and awesome of them! I mean doing something good for someone else is always good! I hope there is a situation like this in my life when i can help someone like this!

    September 24, 2009 at 9:19 am |
  250. Claire

.I think the winning team did something that was very nice. The player had Down Syndrom and he had a dream,a wish was to score a touchdown. What the players and the coaches did was awesome, how they wanted to help another person who had a disability, get his moment. Even if the players knew that they were winning, they let the player get his dream come true.If I had that happen to me I would let the player score, no doubt about it (unless they were beating me).

    September 24, 2009 at 9:19 am |

    September 24, 2009 at 1:43 pm |
  256. April, Carly and Colette

We think that the coach on the oppistite team was very generous to let the kid score a touchdown since that was his dream. Anyone with down syndrome should at least be able to achieve their dreams.

It was nice that they let him do it. He had a sickness and missed a lot of things in his life. He was happy that he scored the touchdown.

    September 24, 2009 at 2:32 pm |
  260. Brittney

I would of done the same thing for him because if I were him I'd want to make a touchdown whether the other team let me or not.

    September 24, 2009 at 5:12 pm |
  261. HOSEA

I THINK THAT YOU WILL BE MEST UP BECAUSE YOU WILL DO THAT BECAUSE IN FRONT OF EVERYBODY THEY PUT HIM IN JUST BECAUSE HE HAS A DISABLE PROBLEM EVEN THOUGH THEY WON THEY SHOULD OF PUT HIM IN AT LEAST SECOND QUARTER SO HE CAN ACTUALLY WORK FOR HIS POINT AND NOT SCORE EASLY BECAUSE HE IS DISABLE. IF I WAS ON THE OTHER TEAM I WOULD NOT TREAT HIM DIFFRENT AND STILL TRY TO TACKLE HIM AND MAKE SURE HE DOESNT SCORE JUST BECAUSE THATS HOW NORMAL I WOULD SEE HIM.

    September 24, 2009 at 5:52 pm |
  262. emily

I think it was the right decision. he may never have that chance evr again.

It was cool that the team let him score the touchdown. He is down with a sickness and this like a one of the life time thing that he can do.

    September 24, 2009 at 7:50 pm |
  265. Hunter

I would no doubt have done the same thing if I was the teams coach. I play high school football also and we have a kid that comes to our games that is in a wheelchair and i guarantee that If he got to run a touchdown once It would make his day and be a dream, and something he would never forget in his whole life.

  270. safaa

yes i would do that cuz he is never gonna get a chance to play it in its his dream and you would'nt ike it if you were him and you couldn't do many sports so they were right for giving him a chance

    September 24, 2009 at 9:45 pm |
  271. Shelby

Everyone deserves to accomplish their dream. Especially those with disabiities. I would have gladly given up a shut out to please somebody in such a situation as this.

A shutout isn't important. What they did for Mat was a great thing to do. So thank you for helping Mat finally get his first touchdown.

  273. Cammi

That was so nice that the other team did that for him.Its even cooler because he might never beable to do that ever again. Now i bet he feels on top of the world!!!!

    September 25, 2009 at 9:03 am |
  274. Joe

That was really nice. I mean most coaches won't give up a clean slate (shutout). If I were the coach I would've done the same thing.

i would not give up in no shut out at all i would fight until the end. i can not give up.

    September 25, 2009 at 10:40 am |
  277. Brittany

Everybody has dreams and if one dream is to give up something for somebody else, that just shows what type of person they are. If it was me, I would do anything thing to make that dream possible for that one kid. Nothing is more important than knowing you helped someone out through a difficult time. We as people don't know what others are feeling, and I feel it's important to let people acknowledge what they always wanted to do, or haven't had the privilege of doing so before. So I thank that football team for seeing the other side of the wall.

    September 25, 2009 at 11:48 am |

I think that for another team to give up a shout out for another team’s member with a disability, is just awesome. They must have really thought about that dissision, because it is hard to give up a shout out.

    September 25, 2009 at 1:04 pm |
  280. Fred

I would have let him score the touch down, just because u are making someone feel good!!!!

I’m glad they let him score a touch down, it probably made him very happy.

    September 25, 2009 at 1:05 pm |
  282. Yuuki

I think that what the teams did was sweet, but they should let him play more than once a game because otherwise he'll know that he diden't really do much the and that the team let him score.

    September 25, 2009 at 1:06 pm |
  283. zach

I think that was a great thing to make a kids dream to give up a shut out. Congratz!! Have a great rest of the season

  284. Paco

Giving the kid with a disability the chance to score a touchdown was a really cool thing to do. He might never get that opportunity again. I think that more people should do this kind of things. Everyone should get the chance to have their dream come true.
I would have let him make the goal if I was the other coach. And I would also be cheering for him when he got the touchdown.

    September 25, 2009 at 1:07 pm |
  285. TARY

I think that it was very nice of the opposing team to give up there shutout for the boy who had a problem. It showed true sportsmanship and that 15 year old will remember it for the rest of his life. I would have done the same thing if I was the coach of the other team. WAY TO GO GUYS! YOU MADE HIS DREAM COME TRUE.

    September 25, 2009 at 1:08 pm |
  286. Ashley

That's so COOL! I know that if I had a chance to do anything like that I would! Just because you have a dissability like down syndrome doesn't mean that you shouldn't have a chance to follow your dreams.

    September 25, 2009 at 1:08 pm |
  287. Bob

I think it was nice to let the boy with Down syndrome to score a touchdown. It probably made his spirits high and made him believe that he can do things. I think it was especially nice that it was his dream to get a touchdown so I think that was really nice.

I'd the same for a person with down syndrome. If I were like that I'd want the same thing done to me. Life is full of surprises & this was a surprise that happened to him. What true sports-men-ship.

Yes I would!!!!!!! That was great. It really is touching to me when I have an uncle with Down syndrome. That was a great story! I have also heard that other schools do it too. That was awesome!

Fist off , Wht that that team did was amazing. They gave up a perfect game to help a kid out. Thats true sprtsmanship:)
and for the kid who said it was dumb.... go back in your bubble. Keep those words to your self. Meani>:(
I would have loved to see the look on his face when he scored that touch down:D
he must have been so extatic.

I think it was really nice for the other team to let the kid with Down Syndrome run to score the winning touchdown.. Because it was his dream to be able to do that, the other team shows great sportsmanship and is actually very caring. It is very hard to have a person with down syndrome on a team but obviously it isn’t is hard as I thought.

    September 25, 2009 at 2:10 pm |
  298. Alex

I think that was a very nice thing to do for that kid... Even though he has a disability they still let him fulfill his dreams... That was really nice of the football team that was beating them 46-0... And I just wanted to say thanks for letting him score that touchdown 🙂

I think i would give him the touchdown because it was his dream in life and if that was my dream i would want someone to do that for me too! It probably gave him a lot of convidence in life too so i think it is a great thing!

    September 25, 2009 at 4:22 pm |

I think it was very big of the other team to allow the boy to get a touchdown. It would have made his day and life to score for the team even if it was on purpose.

    September 25, 2009 at 4:24 pm |
  303. Luigi

I think it was great the other team gave up the shut out to have the kid score the touchdown. It made that boys day and will for the rest of his life.

    September 25, 2009 at 4:25 pm |
  304. Hailey

I think that it was really cool that those kids were nice enough to realize that value comes before victory. I really hope that somehow those kids get rewarded for their efforts, not with an item but with karma or something. I love how he jumped over the touchdown line and his team congratulated him. If I was that team, I would give up the shut out because it wasn’t like it would cost the game. I would probably give up a shut out for the same reason. I would also give up a shut out if my team was winning by so much that it was undermining the other team’s confidence overly. I really hope that that boy is happy. 

Those kids were so thoughtful to give that kind something that would raise his self confidence forever. I think that I would give up a winning shutout for the same thing.

i would give up my points for a person who wanted to make a touchdown. i think it would make him very happy and he would feel good about himself.

I would give up the shutout for him. It was his dream to get a touchdown and he deserves it. He would be happy every time he thinks about it. If you were him you would want to score a touchdown.

I think it was cool of the other team to let the boy with down syndrome score and give up the shutout. That was probably the boys biggest dream. It takes a good coach to give up the shutout for someone on the other team.

I think it was really nice for them to let him score a touchdown. I would have done the same thing for him. Because of them he got to realize his dream of scoring a touchdown.

i think that it was the right thing to do. Not many poeple are accepting people that are different, and or have down syndrome. I think that this team was very loving, and accepting to who this team member was. I think that the experience that this boy had was incredible. he should thank his team and be proud that he scored a touchdown!

yes I would have given up that shut out if I was the coach. I think the coach did the right thing. Plus, I think I would feel better giving him the touch down then having the shutuout

i think it was a good idea but they should have left out that part about them letting him win it. that way he wouldn't find out and he would be really happy. but its sad to say but i think he found out and i'm sorry for him that he had to find out it was just a flook.

I thought it was a nice gesture and it means a LOT to me because my brother has C.P (Cerebral Palsy) so seeing others make a dream come true makes me feel better.

i think its great that the team gave up a shutout to let a person with disability to score a touchdown. I think that a shutout should be given up if it will allow someone to have a once in a life time experience

  320. Sarah

I think that i would have given that boy a chance to do that. Many coaches wouldnt have the diencey to do it although how could you not. Im pretty sure that he barely gets to play anyways and you killing them so why not. Its just all about how good of a sport someone is.

  321. E.O

Of course I would give up a shutout for this reason. But if it was just for some unathletic kid who rode the bench then no. But to give someone with a disability a chance to live their dream then of course I would. Unless it was a really close game but if not then of course.

Well just like the winning high school team did, I definately would have also given up the shut-out for that boy to score. I think that by scoring that one touchdown he was the most happy he has probably ever been in his life. And if i were the coach, I would feel honored to allow him to do that.

I think that it was very sportsman like for the other team to let the boy with Down’s Syndrome get a touchdown. I would definitely give the shout out to the team wow that was such a nice thing to do. I also think that they can feel good about themselves because they helped a boy accomplish his dream!!

I like the idea that they let that kid score a touchdown. My little sister has down syndrome and I would want to have anything she wants. A win is a win, and when you can do something like that for a kid with down syndrome then it makes them so happy and they never forget it.

i thought it was a very considerate thing for the football team to do that. im sure the kid will always remember that. it was very honorable.

My shutout would be to let someone be the center of attention for a day. So that they can feel happy about themselves. That way that gives them a chance to interact with other people and make new friends. Because it is always good to make good friends.

I would definitely give up a shutout for a kid who has dreamed about anything all of his life but cannot achieve it on their own due to a disability. Sometimes doing something nice for someone else is better than achieving a perfect win and benefit yourself. If you decided to get a shutout instead, sure you would get a lot of recognition, but by giving it up for someone else, well just look what it did for both teams. Sportsmanship is the key, what does one little game matter, and besides they still one!

I would give up a shut-out for nearly anything, that is, anything that would cause me to lose the game. It’s a win either way, whether the score be 30-0 or 30-7, so the score really doesn’t matter that much. Also if my team was really far ahead, I would let them score multiple times, if it made them feel better.

I would give up a shutout for someone who has a dream to score a TD, or to anything that is more important at the time. I think that the to who gave up a shutout to let a boy with downsyndrome and a dream to score a touchdown one dayy,, was amazing! I am glad to know that there are some people out there, that care enought to let a downsyndrome boy finally live his dream. When i watched the story it touch my heart. So there is a kid at my school who i have gone to school with since the 2nd grade, one day he said to the class that he had always dreamed to have someone be nice to him for once, and not pick on him because of his mental health issue. When i heard him say that i felt very bad so i stepped up, even though i still get picked on for doing it, and asked him if he would like to be my friend. We are still friends to this dayy.! SOOO when i heard that someone did that for a kid who had mental issues, i was glad that some people decided to step up and let a boy live his dreamm, Thanks Guys!!!

I think that the team did a very good thing. Even though the team was winning it agreed on letting the kid do a touchdown. Now the kid with down syndrome will be very happy because he scored his first touchdown.

What happened is a great example of sportsmanship. It is surprising that they gave up a shutout so someone could score. Almost everyone in sports is too competitive and they don't like to give up a shutout. It is very rare that they did that but very sportsman like.

Letting the boy score his first touchdown was the right thing to do. i would give up a score to help anyone out, like the other team did. it made the boy happy and proud of himself for scoring a touchdown, and that is basically what sports are supposed to be about...making people happy!

I think it was extremely kind of them to do that from him. I would do the same. It shows great sportsmanship of that other team. There should be more people in the world like that.

It’s not every day we blog about a “Before We Go” segment, but Wednesday’s story was worth it. Leading 46-0, a high school football team agreed to give up its shutout so that a player on the other team a 15-year-old with Down Syndrome could realize his dream to score a touchdown. My dream is to win not to score.

That was very kind of the other teams coach. Because of his down syndrome he doesn't get to do a lot of the stuff other kids do.

I think that schools should not have longer school days because they could kill the environment because they have to print more paper so they would have to cut down more trees and kids would lose their focus more so they wouldn't be listening in school.

This reminds me of that softball team that carried the other team's player to the home plate for a homerun 'cause she got injured. It's people that do things like this that makes this horrible world a better place...

I know we all want to be like this, but if you think about it, a lot of us don't have the compassion like these people, even tho we think we do

if i was on the winning team i would give him a touchdown because it must be hard dealing with down syndrome. i mean if it helps him fell good that he got one then let him! its not like ur giving up the whole game
