Greatest Achievement EVER?

On the 40th anniversary of the moon landing, a lot of folks are calling that "giant leap for mankind" our greatest achievement.  There's no doubt it was incredible - especially at a time before cell phones and computers and GPS were even available to us.

But was it humanity's greatest achievement EVER?  Was it bigger than the invention of the Internet, the discovery of the New World or the Wright Brothers' first flight?  Can you think of any achievements that rival our first steps on the moon?

    Dearest Carl,

Well everyone who has invented or introduced anything new, has done the greatest achievement in this life. I believe that going to the moon was the mens biggest achievement ever because it was away from the earth. As far as the internet is concerned we humans would have found another way of communication if the internet was no there. As far as travelling is concerned it wasn't that hard to come with that idea. But as far as going on the moon is converned there was no way that some one would have thought going there or that far.

Well, flying to the moon and the Wright brothers' first flight was historical. However, was it really impossible to fly? I think that the greatest achievement was the thing that we needed most at the time. Such as fire and growing the first crops and animals.

The best way to approach the issues of our past accomplishments as a society is to have different categories.

Not only the discovery of the new world, but the independence we gained from winning the revolutionary war. And then setting up our own independent government, different somewhat from the one in the "homeland". Those measure up to me.

One student says that camouflage and stealth technology that military uses is one of the greatest achievements. Another student thinks that the invention of electricity and the light bulb by Benjamin Franklin is the greatest. The last student thought that the invention of computers is probably the greatest achievement..

I think that every people who did achieve their goal made the greast achievement ever. It's different to everyone. Some people might think that landing on a moon is the greatest achievement ever but some people might think that maybe creating Internet is the greatest achievement ever. So we can say that every great achievements are the greatest achievements EVER!!!!

I don't think man had a greatest achievement. Man has made and done many amazing things. Going to the moon is nice, but it's not helping me everyday like i use the computer

How could anything beat landing on the moon for the first time? Everything has to be absolutely PERFECT, and if anything is even the slightest bit wrong, then there is a major catastrophe for the rocket and everyone in it: they might blow up, or be several miles too far to a side, and go rocketing off into space to who-knows-where.

Although going to the moon is a big achivement the Wright brothers creating planes is also a big historial moment. They were real the foundation of human flight but from cave men to the morden day technology were all very important in history.

Great achievement? Yes. Greatest achievement EVER? No.
It’s my opinion that the advances we are making today are better than walking on the moon. It was a great achievement, but it was just the start. I can’t honestly think of one single event or achievement that is the greatest ever. I think that there are way too many achievements or events to pick one as the greatest ever.

Landing on the moon is most definitely not mans greatest achievement. The creation of a written language or the discovery of metalworking far surpasses a rather worthless landing on a hunk of rock in space.

I think that an achievement bigger than the first step on the moon is when Obama was elected president. The first black president in history of the U.S. in a time like our is huge.

if you really think about it we couldn't be doing any of this; going to the moon, sitting at our computers etc. if we didn't have our freedom and independents.

What about medicine? Without medicine at least 15% of the population would die from little more than the common cold every year!
