Michael Vick and the NFL

He committed a crime, he's done time, and now, former NFL quarterback Michael Vick is hoping he can get back in the game.  The league says he needs to show "genuine remorse" before it'll let him take the field; others say he's "paid his dues" and should be eligible to play.

Well, here's where YOU can sound off:  Should Vick be allowed to play pro football again?  Or do you feel he should be permanently benched?

I don’t think he should play cause he did something eligal. Playing professional is a privilage. I fyou do something bad should not have that privilage anymore.

I think that Vick should be able to play! The dog fights and football are two different things, and his punishment should not be being baned from playing football. And no Carl, i am not a Falcons fan.

I believe that Vick has paid his dues. He did something illegal and he apologized, paid the money, and did the time. But what does dog fighting have to do with football? Sure maybe he shouldn't own a pet for what he did. When he starts using steroids then say he can't play football. However, what he did had nothing to do with football so why is he being punished for that?

When I hear the terms "Does he deserve a chance to earn a living I get really P'd off. Because it is coming from people that care more about animals than people. Did slave owners deserve to keep their wealth and pass it on to their clan? Heck they killed people like Vick, but that is forgiveable right? And we should just move on. And we wonder why America is going backwards. You can't go up if you are holding someone else down America!!!!

No I do not think he should be allowed back in the game because the children of the US look up to him as a hero. Yes he did the time but he still did the crime. If he is allowed to play the game children will think that you can get away with treating animals like that. Would you want aother criminals playing the game if they did the time? What makes him any different?

well i think that vick should still play beacuse he has done his time. he has done his time by being in jail for a long time i dont think its right for him to do genuine remorse. i think they should go by wat carl azuz says. i think that they need to know what crime is and explain what he did i dont think that he did anything bad so he can come back i love football even though im a girl i can still play and i want him back so please carl let this show this is what i have to say about the football player i dont think that its right and that is what i belive now let it show

I think m.vick has paid for what he did so he should be able to get back to what he does best and thats playing football. How does everybody else know that he does feel bad for whats he has done? He is a football player he is not suppose to show his soft side.

In my opinion I think that Michael vick shouldn't be able to go back to being the quarterback for the NFL because he commited a murder, and I don't know about you but in my opinion even though it was a dog and not a human it is just as bad. And i also think that he didn't get enough of a punishment for that crime and that he should have, on top of going to jail, having to pay a fine of a big sum of money.

I believe that Mike Vick deserves a second chance. He was one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. He has paid his depts. He needs to be back n the field. We all understand what he did was wrong, but you have to put yourself in that situation. If you made a mistake would you want others to believe you deserve a second chance.

I think Michael Vick should get a second chance becausse he has paid his dues. Why should he need a brain scane? Do you want a brain scane? I don't think so. JUST LET HIM BE!!!!!!! he got locked up, paid hundres of dollars, and hs to work at a construction site man. give him a breck.

I think that Michael Vick should still have a chance the play in the NFL. Yes he has done wrong, but everybody makes mistakes.
I feel that he has payed his do's and showed alot of "genuine remorse". also the "brain scean" is just outta this world and uneeded. Remeber you have to forgive to for get. so he should have a second chance.

I don't think Vick should be allowed to play football again. Why would you want a guy that beats up dogs for a living to play football? I say he needs a worse punishment. They should have put him in the Space Needle. That would've been a suitable punishment.

I thnk that they should let Micheal Vick play in the NFL again because he commited his crime but then he did his time. But some other people that do worser things than dog fighting get off their case. So I dont thnk it fair to make him go through more drama.

People are reacting like Micheal Vick's dog fighting crime is a murder crime!!! Animal rights organizations are doing to much. Homosides and murder charges are made everyday. This is way overhyped. Micheal Vick should be alowed to play in the NFL again. If Ray Lewis can come back and still be a stud, so can Vick!

    May 22, 2009 at 9:15 am |
  22. Shelene

No he shouldn't be allowed back!! The men who play in professional sports should be held to a high standard and they should have real consequences for doing dispicable things – not just minor illegal infractions – but horrible, nasty things (such as harming animals or children on purpose!). We, as Americans, value our sports – but don't we also value our children? These athletes are role models and they know it. If they are allowed back into the NFL, we are saying to our kids that it's not a big deal to break these laws. We shouldn't allow them such an honor as the NFL and to be our childrens' role models after they've done things that devalue our general beliefs as Americans.

i believe he should be let back in to the NFL and the brain can thing is a stupid idea........and he shouldn't have had to pay all that money. He also shouldn't have had to go to jail for that long 21 months for a dog fight?

Michael Vick was curly miss treating dogs and that is a crime and even though he has done his time he has no remorse for what he has done how can someone harm something so innocent and feel nothing and by taking what he loves away foot ball maybe then he will feel something!

Surely, Michael Vick has been humiliated, imprisoned for 21months, payed a great sum of money including illegal fees. Though it might be enough punishment for him, what's more important is whether he took this seriously enough: that he looked back on himself and is firm he will not let the same thing happen again, and thus, I assist he has to show genuine remorse,

Michael Vick made a huge mistake. We all do but even though he apoligized dos not mean he sould be given a second chance. I think that he should not be able to play again, but he should do something else. People look up to him and he should not go back out on that feild becaus it just shows its alright to do as he did.

  46. East Mesa Detention Facility (Foxtrot)

Michael Vick deserves a second chance because he paid his dues. Drug charges are worse than dog fighting, so the NFL needs to recognize a chance to have an all-star player back on the field.

I actually didn't hear about this until now, so I'm not sure. If some animals were seriously injured or even killed, then no, he shouldn't be allowed to play even is he does show genuine remorse.

    His crime was horrible!

He sholuld not be allowed to have any position which may influence children.

If the NFL allows him to play, I will not purchase my season tickets.

Maybe he should spend time at a shelter or animal hospital to see how animals suffer, are afraid, and come to understand the importance of animals in our lives.

i think that vick payed his due and everybody deserves a srcond chance, i dont feel his crime has anything 2 do wit his career. 21 months of his life was wasted and i think he is ready to come back.

I don't know why he would want to go back. I've seen books making fun of him, he has a become someone that not very many people like. If he really did feel remorse for what he did, he should have really shown it.

No. Vick did something very wrong, and I think that the NFL doesn't need that for their image. To be allowed to play is a privilege that he was given, and after breaking it he shouldn't get another chance.

Michael Vick should not be allowed to play football anymore. He committed a crime and should pay the price. Just because he is famous, he should not recieve special treatment. He should take responsibility for his actions! Dogs are man's best friend not punching bags!

I personally think that former nfl star michael vick does not deserve a second chance what he did was not right. there should be something in the nfl rules where one strike your out deal. when he played in the nfl it was a privelage not a right and i think he should lose that privelage

  89. C/AB S.

    Hey Carl.

Well. Its hard to give you support to some one who has done such a crime. A dog lover myself, I truly get emotional when events like this happen. But it is wrong to take a Career away from someone who has made a mistake. Lets take Michael Phelps for an example, he was caught doing drugs, but a month or two later he is allowed back into the Olympics Organization. Michael Vick has served his time and payed the fines for such a crime, so why crucify him for it. In conclusion I think he should have a Second Chance and I will stand by Michael Vick in his journey to getting his life back.

    May 22, 2009 at 3:56 pm |
  90. Lorene

I believe he should be able to play agian, but ONLY if he interacts with dogs. He would have to show that he cares about them and he would have to be supervised. He should also have a councler while he does this and help rescue lost or hurt animals for atleast a year. Than he should be able to play again.

    May 22, 2009 at 3:56 pm |
  91. Avery

I think Michal Vick should be able to play in the NFL because if Michal Phelps does drugs and still is able to swim for medals. Michal Vick should be able to play football.

    May 22, 2009 at 4:02 pm |
  92. Holly

He should NOT be able to play! He messed it up, it should stay like that. Sometimes forgiving is good, but not in this case.

    May 22, 2009 at 4:07 pm |
  93. Hunter

He should. He got caught, he paid in cash and time, and he apologized. Why let others come back like Michael Phelps but not him for something not as worse that Phelps did? Really, you'll let someone who smoked out of a pipe but Vick can't play for what he did. Phelps did worse than Vick. Phelps is still playing, Vick should too. Plus, he didn't kill the dogs, so stop saying he did.

    May 22, 2009 at 4:34 pm |
  94. Jaeda

I think they should let him play, but with a suspension. What he did was wrong, but he DID pay his time and he was sorry. If all of the other players got a second chance, i think he should, too. He is only human.....

I think Michael Vick definitely deserves MORE TIME behind bars. I completely agree with Shelene who stated that "the men who play in professional sports should be held to a high standard and they should have real consequences for doing dispicable things." So many people, among those millions of young children, look up to these athletes as idols and as people who they want to be when they grow up. He doesn't deserve the chance to get paid millions of dollars again after what he did. If it was someone who wasn't popularly known, the person would definitely have been incarcerated for a longer time. Just because he is "important to the team" and he has the money to pay the bail, does NOT mean that he should get the second chance. Dog fighting is a cruel and disgusting crime that is wrong on so many different levels. I agree with the spokesman from PETA who said that evidence needs to be shown to prove that he does show remorse, BEFORE he gets any form of a second chance. I do think that the brain scan idea is a little over-the-top, though.

Micheal Vicks put those dogs through enough and the system had to put some down and i think that punishment enough for those dogs. HE SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO PLAY NFL FOOTBALL ANYMORE!!!

  97. Anonymous

What Michael Vick did was unacceptable. He should not be aloud to continue playing whether or not he feels remorse because he deserves to be punished for what he did and 21 months is far to short.

NO WAY!!! He should N-O-T be let back in! Because what he did is terrible. Making innocent dogs fight is cruel and if you let him back in, he'll just think that he can get away with anything. He was banned in the first place for a reason!!!

i think he should come back because he really didnt mean to do it and he has fans who love him and his family who wants to see him on television. michael vick loves having fun on the feild and playing football

Personally I have no problem with the redeeming of people. But as a concerned animal lover, I am troubled. This gives us kids a message, and that message says that its ok for animals to suffer under our accounts. It will ware off in a few years. Not for the animals however! For the rest of that dog's life it will always remember Mr. Vick's cruel treatment. As for PETA, I don't think a physical examination of the brain is going to help Vick feel, if he has, remorse.

I think from both opinions that he did do wrong. Yet everyone deserves a second chance.

and i do agree that he should be at least benched for a couple of years. Carl, what do you think?

    May 22, 2009 at 6:10 pm |
  104. Jenny

I think that Vick should NOT get back on unless he does something majorly against his past crimes. Like volentering at animal shelters and humane socioties. (of course under supervision!!!) He should also pay up more money for hurting those poor dogs. even then he shouldn't play.

    May 22, 2009 at 6:20 pm |
  105. JULIANA

I think YES he should. He should because he is a really good player and he deserves to be able to play.

    May 22, 2009 at 6:34 pm |
  106. Karissa

He shouldn't be able to go back to the NFL because if he is let back into the NFL then he might try to have dog fights again someday.

  107. Chase

I think he should have a second chance to his career, cause' he was a HUGE NFL superstar, but I still don't like him.

  108. A student from Mrs.Mcdowells class

  109. Rachel

He does not deserve to go back to the NFL at all. He ruined dogs' lives, so his should be ruined too, for a lesson.
I think it would be better for Vick if he doesn't go back to playing football. He would learn more that way. Remember, experience is what you get when you don't get what you want.

    May 22, 2009 at 7:14 pm |

I think that Vick shoud'nt play because sorry doesn't cut it he knows they were trained to kill each other and lose are LIVES he will never get back

I really don't think he should be able to play! Yes some people think he payed his dues but he made a concious decision and if he played football it would just be more money and fun for him, if he it would be like a reword and yes he payed money and went to jail but if that it its like he could do it again if that was it, and was hitting animals and makeing them fight for no reason. He knew what he was doing and new it was wrong, we all make mistakes but that ones not like accidently throwing a baceball threw a window.

Look, the fact is that dog fighting is wrong, period. He should have a longer sentence. Tip for Vick: try again in 30 years because we're not ready to see a loser back on the field.

    May 22, 2009 at 8:34 pm |
  119. Wilson

Personally, I don't think he should play again. Call me crazy but thats what I believe. He needs to learn that what he did was wrong

Yes, he is a good person he just made one bad choice. And he is really good at football!!

    May 22, 2009 at 9:10 pm |
  121. Kristine

I do NOT think he should be allowed back into the NFL. He committed a crime that lost him tons of fans!!! This was a decission where he should have thought of his fans first!! Many of them probobly have dogs and think of them as best friends. That is not a good thing to do and I think lots of people agree.

    May 22, 2009 at 9:27 pm |
  122. Daniel

I think that Vick should be allowed to pay after he has to do something for animal shelters like giving 25% of his salary to the shelter for 4 years or something along that lines. But over all i think he should be able to play again

    May 22, 2009 at 9:28 pm |
  123. Daniel

and to let all you know if you have to deal with dogs 24/7 you will agree with me dogs stink and they are not mans best friend

He should be able to join the NFL again because he already got his punishment in jail. But what team would want him?

    May 22, 2009 at 10:35 pm |
  130. Alex

No, there's no reson he should be let back in the NFL! I don't think there should ever be an amount of money to fix his mistake and help those dogs that he abused. If he wanted to keep his status as a NFL superstar, he should've thought of that before he fought dogs.

    May 22, 2009 at 11:51 pm |
  131. Kelsey

well i think he shouldn't play for the NFL anymore because he was in trouble for illegal dog fighting. And that he was told that he could never play football ever again unless he got his act together. But i don't think he should not play anymore.

Yes. I believe Vick should have a second chance. Yes he did a terrible thing and he was punished for what he did to those dogs. If he does something like this again then he should lose his spot in the NFL forever.

He should play but keep him under a watchfull eye because he might do this again.

    May 23, 2009 at 10:16 pm |

Are you kidding me? There is no reason that he should be able to play again. He has done terrible things to those dogs. If they let him play I will very angry. The dogs did nothing to him and he had to fight them! That is not right no matter how you look at it. If it were my choice i would not let him play. I dont care if football and dog fighting are two separate things!

    May 23, 2009 at 11:38 pm |
  148. Aya

I think that Vick should still play for the NFL. People make mistakes and if he is really sorry for doing what he did, he shouldn't be punished even more. Sometime punishing someone after them being sorry can really make it a lot worse than before.

    May 24, 2009 at 2:43 pm |
  154. Jamie

Yes I do belive that Micheal Vick should be allowed back in the NFL although the actions that he took were unethical he apoligized and served his time in prison, and keeping him out of the NFL wont change the past.

no because he killed so many inocent dogs for fun!! now way he's a killer and a drug user. Those things are unexseptible horrible person, and he's been doing it for awhile so what do you think carl

    May 24, 2009 at 5:44 pm |
  156. Stephanie

I say give him a second chance but keep a good eye on him. I don't think he deserves to have him career crushed because he did apologize. Maybe if someone can prove that we truly is sorry, that could give him his ticket back to the NFL. Either way, I think if you keep an eye on him, he should be let back into the NFL.

I think that Vick should be suspended for a while, but after a while he should be put back on the bench. Although what he did was wrong, he deserves another shot at life.

    May 25, 2009 at 12:14 pm |

Micheal Vick is just human and deserves another chance for what he did. I agree it is VERY wrong but he was a great NFL player and he could grow to be as popular as he was back before he was jailed/arrested.

    May 25, 2009 at 12:53 pm |
  165. Karla

I believe that Michael Vick has paid his dues and should be allowed to get on with his life. A person shouldn't be judged forever, especially if they already went to prison and paid a fine.

    May 25, 2009 at 1:41 pm |
  166. Addy

Dog fighting is a horrible crime and vick is now paying the price , i do not think he should be allowed to play again , the injured and dead dogs should get some respect from that.

    May 25, 2009 at 2:06 pm |
  167. Alexis

There are some players in the NFL who have comitted crimes. Like you said, Ray Lewis was found guilty of obstruction of justice in a murder case in 2002. A person was killed and the killer was harder because of Lewis giving false information, or not give any information at all. This is a persons life, in Vicks case, it is animals. Animals are importnat, but i think that humans are just a bit more important. if someone can mess with a murder case and still be in football, the why shouldn't Vick. Vick is a huge role model for football and should be able to play with limmits; we do not want him to control the young minds in america. if he becomes really big again then younger people would listen to him and thing that what he did was okay because he is a good spots player. he is probly in his mid twenteys, and the retirement age is about mid thiries. so he would only play for about ten years, so why not let him have his fun.

    May 25, 2009 at 2:15 pm |

No,I think it's cruel to the dogs and he should not get to play again. Also it's his living if he loses that he might lose his family, friends, and home.

  175. Jennette

I think that Vick has paid all his dues. I mean he gave up his carrer for the satisfaction of everyone else. To some people animals are just animals. To some people animals are their babies. I think that it really depends on what your background story is and where you come from. I think people should just give up the fight and let Vick play. Plus his team needs him on the field.

    May 25, 2009 at 9:20 pm |
  176. Allison

I feel michael vick should not be allowed to play football for the NFL. because at that level it is a privillage. and he is a growen man and if any other person did what he did they would have lost there job. and he should be treated like an equal. he is a person and just because he is a star does not mean he should get treated better than normal people.

    May 25, 2009 at 9:37 pm |
  177. Zachary

I think that Vick shouldn't go to the NFL because want he did is a crime only life in jail could only pay the price plus NFL is a privillage and he lost it.

  178. John

If The NFL wants good people they will put him back in it and i think it is fine for criminal convicts to go back to there career (LOL).

He paid his dues in prison, i think he sould play, the only people who dont want him to play and think he sould still be in jail are those animal right groups. There are still millions of dogs everywhere in the world.

I think that Michael Vick should be allowed back in the NFL. He is a great athlete and is very good at football. He made a stupid move by having dog fights, but i dont think he should be banned from the NFL. He payed his time in jail and he should be let back in the NFL. I loved watching his games and his style of play even though i am a Dallas Cowboys fan.

just because he's famous doesnt mean he can just get off the hook of illegal stuff even if he did do his time. if he was some other ordinary guy he wouldnt be allowed but nooooooo hes MICHAEL VICK omg lets have a cow. he needs to be treated equal just like everyone else. i think if they do let him play he would be hated for a really long time anyway cause most people are not going to just forgive him and move on. people will throw trash at him and not want him playing soooo really im neutral on this one. theres pros and cons for which ever they choose

  187. Sage

I don't think so. He did something wrong. What's the point of letting him back? He paid some money, spent some time, but for a pro footballer, that's nothing. I don't think he should be allowed to go play again.

    May 26, 2009 at 10:25 pm |
  188. Brooke

I don't think that Vick should be aloud to play again because what he did was horrible. Children all around the world need someone to look up to. They have to know that what he did was not okay so they shouldn't just let him off the hook like that.

    May 27, 2009 at 12:14 am |
  189. J-Queezy

I say Vick should play..I'm not saying what he did with the dogs was right but he was punished and he apologized...he apparently learned his lesson....unless he is doing something against league rules like drugs then technically... he should be allowed to play. So forget all of you haters he is getting treated like everyone else....he is not getting special treatment just because he is famous

    May 27, 2009 at 2:31 am |
  190. Josh

Yes, Vick should be able to play football again. Everyone makes bad decisions and they pay the consequences, just like Vick did. Millions of people dog fight but just aren't caught, Vick was just one of the people who were caught. He had to do the time for the crime so now they sjhould just leave all of that in the past.

    May 27, 2009 at 10:08 am |
  191. brady

I think they should let the man play again. If it wasn't someone good then they would let him play once more. Its a guy who many kids once idled the guy. Then we they found out about the dog fighting he mad a lot people upset, but if it was someone no one knew they would forgive him.

i think that Michael Vick SHOULD NOT go back to the NFL i think his sorry is weak it does not prove that he might do dog fight again it was very sad that how many pitbulls was killed during the fights. He is a very sad man and plus he is not that good at being QB!
    i'm at Rowlett High School!!!

    May 28, 2009 at 1:06 pm |
  196. Jordan

Personally I don't think he should be allowed to play anymore. One reason is that if he is out there on that field every sunday than you know some kid is going to be looking up to him as a role model. And well in my perspective he is not a very good role model. Yes he was a good quarterback but he committed a crime and it may not seem serious but dogs have feelings to and they probably don't like beating up on their own kind. So I dont think someone like Michael Vick should be allowed back in the NFL just because he was once a good QB.

    May 28, 2009 at 1:21 pm |
  197. Marcus

I do not think that Michael Vick should be allowed to play in the NFL again, there are much better deserving people who are just as good as he used to be. Even though he was a great athlete the NFL doesn't need the drama of having someone who used to dog fight because that message will be sent out to younger kids. I think he would have to do some sort of public speaking and have to kiss up to the public until his respect level goes back up even a little bit. Plus even if he did when he played the Pittsburgh Steelers he would have wished that he had never started playing again.

    May 28, 2009 at 6:21 pm |
  198. Ryan

Mike deffinately did something horrible and in return was punished. But does being punished for ones actions really make them a better person, or a more disciplined person, especially after such a crime? I think that it does not. This man should not be allowed back into the NFL no matter how sorry he is. This was a crime, disciplinary actions should carry over to all aspects of this mans life.

    May 28, 2009 at 7:41 pm |
  199. Marques

I personally think he should be allowed to play again in pro football because he has served his time for his crime. His crime was bad... i guess but like it didn't hurt any humans... like ya, it hurt dogs which are 'mans best friend' ya dogs always help us but, everyone messes up. He has paid his time by going to jail for like two years and honestly everyone wants him back in the NFL cause he was good. There are a few teams that could use a star like him. He also did apologize and like they should just watch him closely then make sure he doesn't slip up or anything. Its not even like Vick is the only player who broke the law other football players broke the law and were allowed to play in the NFL example Ray Lewis. He's worked, went to jail, and paid fines..... Michael Vick deserves a second chance. (:

    May 29, 2009 at 1:02 am |
  200. Lucy

I strongly disagree that he should come bak to NFL because he commit a crime and it is shocking for this famous person. He might return with his crime again, who knows?

  201. Kira

Everyone deserves a second chance. even people who we don't like.

    May 31, 2009 at 1:24 pm |
  202. Veronica

I'm not sure how to feel about him. I could care less about football or any other sport. Sure he paid his dues, but those dogs are the ones he needs to be apologizing to. Dogs who are only trained to fight have to go through therapy before they can rejoin reality again. Some dogs are trained to fight from the day they are born. It's the only thing they know. A dog's life shouldn't be like that. They deserve a life where they have everything they need and someone who loves them. I don't believe that everyone deserves a second chance, I know those dogs do. They did nothing wrong. They were innocent and defenseless. We need to think about both sides of the story. Not just the side of the celebrity.
