Why Can't We Disconnect?
"The perfect storm of attentional problems...the worst situation to be in": That's how one brain researcher describes texting while driving. The last time our blog covered the subject, more than 100 of you logged on to say that it's a bad idea.
But it doesn't take a brain expert, a blog, or a bucket full of statistics to tell you that it's dangerous to text while operating heavy equipment. So why do you think that people still do it? Why can't we disconnect, even if it's only for long enough to get from A to B?

I think people still text wile they drive because they dint realize the real dangers of it while they are doing it. People know that its dangerous and not smart to do it but when the situation comes to them they don't realize it.
I think that people can't get off there phones even for a little while because habits die hard. If you're talking on a phone you are having a continuous conversation, and you'll want to have a continuous conversation through texting.
People just can't stop talking about how awesome you are Carl!!!
I think that people do it because they're ridiculously addicted to their cell phones, and sometimes they're just like my mother; once you start talking on the phone, you can't stop (but my mother doesn't talk on her cell phone while she's driving). I remember CNN Student News covered a cell phone ban on the January 14th show, and I agree that talking on the cell phone while driving should be illegal. I just don't see why people use their cell phone while they drive. It's not like they're talking about a life-or-death situation.
I think that people text when they are working is because thier allways wondering whats going on in thier lives like whats happening whos getting fired. ps love the puns carl

I think it's because people grow up texting so much, they can't stop. I have a friend who takes his parents' phone and texts onthat because he can't text on his own phone!!
its obviously not needed to text someone. Its called calling someone. I mean isn't that the main point of a phone, texting is just like going back in time. a phone is a phone so use it AS A PHONE. BE SMART.
Most people can not stop texting because they believe nothing bad will happen, But then it does and it is to late.
thats why it is important to pay attention to your surroundings especially when driving. It's not just you at risk but others as well.

One of the reason people can't stop texting is because now people do not have control on what they are doing. As the new wireless technology is coming out the people are loosing there patience. At last becasue of our brains are controlling us today we need all the research and statistics to make us aware even then the death and accident number is high and increasing. Lastly I think that pretty soon we we will either need more jail to build up or more cemetry's for many getting convicted of a crime and dying.
People just believe they can take good care of all. Moreover, cell phones are simply magical!
People will continue to text because they think they won't get into an accident or get caught. More people would stop if the fines were higher.
I think people do it because even if they know its dangerous, they are so used to driveing and confident that nothing big will happen because nothing happened this far.

Of course I can't drive cars 'cause I'm not old enough yet but when I ride a bike, I send text messeges and make a call with only one hane gripping the handle.
I almost got hit by a car once by doing that . But I still do it.
Doing it would prove fatal to you but people wouldn't think about it much at the time once you are good at driving. Even if that the most dangerous time.

in my opinion we live in an era where we don't have to wait for anything. In certain way, we can control the time: we can make our channel in tv, we can listen to our preferred radio programme when we want, or we have any new at the moment it happens...
I thing that for this reason we are not able to wait to writing a sms, we have to do in the moment we want to do, althoug we are driving..
We would have to learn to wait, to learn to do one thing after the other... We would be more relax.

I am 19 and have my provisional license. I feel that people forget that our cell phones have voice mail. I am on a prepaid cell phone plan, so that makes me limit my text message usage.
I think people still text because, well....people usually, including me, get rid of their stress by doing something what they want and one common thing is texting!!!! I don't know how it gets rid of our stress but it helps. It really does.
Text messaging might be their way to relieve stress!
Sending messages to people who you like and love is such a pleasuere.(Girlfriends, family members etc.)
Another thing is that businessmen have to receive information and notice from their co-workers through text messaging for immediate reaction. If they don't, he might be fired by his boss for delinquency problems.

I think all the states should have a law against texting while driving. But how will they enforce this law? How will the police know if someone is texting unless they hold the phone up to the windshield? No one will admit to it if they are pulled over.
Because it's addicting!! And I think people think they can get away with it.
I don't know why people stop texting while driving. I think that it's the fact that people think that it's safe and it's not. They don't know the risk.
I think it is really dumb to text when your driving because you probably can't multytask. And I don't know why people still do it. It's DUMB!!!

I think that if you need to text you should pull over to the side of the road and if you need to comunicate that fast you should call.
IT'S JUST PLAIN STUPID!!!!! Texting while driving is setting yourself up for some sort of serious accident. It takes common sense to realize that. I'm not sure why people are so addicted to texting that they do it while driving, but it's definitely not a smart thing to do. It should be banned in all 50 states.
People have just gotten so used to texting and staying in contact with people that it is second nature for people to keep texting when they are in the car. I don't think that any one really thinks that they will crash or be pulled over for teting so they keep doing it.

I think that people still text while driving because the laws have not been enforced enough to stop texting while driving. They also, unfortunately, think that they can still communicate with their friends and drive at the same time.
I have seen a show where they tested if driving while drunk was as bad as driving while talking on a cell phone, and that was talking amagine texting.

I think, that people still text while they drive because they are having a conversation that they THINK, Is Important when In all actuality no conversation could be worth someone's Life. I think that If a Conversation, Was THAT Important, They Would Be ON THE PHONE Rather Than, Texting.

Texting is addicting... we need special patrols or tickets, install a cell phone blocker or scrambler in all cars. Increase the costs of texting to minimize its use.

I think that it is a bad idea to text while drive but sometimes if you are making plans you have to text or if you are getting directions, or if it is an emergency. Even then you should not text while you are driving because many people die.

I don't think that it needs to be researched because a lot of people die when they're on the phone so I think it should be against the law. Plus i have had some scary experiences with my mom.
i think that people text while driving because its a way to socialize. if i were a bus driver that drove people that u dont even know i would get very bored and would like to socialize with someone i know, and one way of doing that is texting
I have no idea because I have never had a cell phone before. It's got to be important, or else they wouldn't text while driving, or actually I wouldn't. I think.
The problem is that people are saying "Oh, I'm not that stupid!" or "I can do it quickly!" But they are not the best drivers ion the world and they still get hurt!
People are so reliant on technology now because they are used to being able to text in a car before the law was around. It is just bad habit.
People set a higher priority on what they need to say at that moment instead of their lives... Instant Gratification!
People think that it's okay if they send just one text, and nothing will happen. Or they think that if they stop at a stoplight, then they have a while to send a text before they need to advance again.
Young people see their elders texting, and think it's okay, so they do it. People also don't realize that texting while driving is illegal in certain states. And, when they are stuck in traffic, or waiting at a stoplight, they use the time to text. The problem with that is that they get too involved in their phone and don't realize when it's time to advance. And, if they're in traffic, they may not see that the traffic is clearing up.

I think we can't disconnect because it's been part of our culture for so long. Teens and a lot of other people have great social lifes so they want to talk all the time! A lot of people think that the rules don't apply to them!
I think people need to buy bluetooth head sets so you can talk and drive at the same time without holding the phone to your ear with one hand and drive with one hand.

It is an addiction. They need to have conversation. They just don't see the real issues of texting while they drive. The police need to do something more because not very many people are caught. They also do it because they know they are not going to be caught. So, they do it anyway.
I think that the phone conpany should add a motion-sencor chip so when the phone move more then 10 mph the phone will shut off adamadicly.

i think that the reason y people text on their phones while they are driving is because they cant wait for destination to text. they just have the urge when that phone rings for a text we just have to answer it right away because they think its important and if they dont answer it the person might get mad. if they were in a car accident or needed help with a personal problem they need the best person for the job so they need people that are usually driving the people driving feel that if they look at the phone for a couple minutes then nothing will happen to them if they look at it.

I think you shoudn't text while driving because it shows lack of responsbility and it is very dangerous. People can die if you miss a red light or somthing and you can crash into a truck or somthing. Texting is addicting... you can't not respond back to a text. It's hard not to open it
If you don't text a person back they will get really mad and your friends will not be happy with you.
Texting is addicting to some people. People pay for unlimited texting and you need to be able to use it.
People will get mad at you if you do not text them back. You have to pay for it so you should be able to use it whenever you want.
Because I am good at it, and I don't even have to look at my cell phone to text.
I have to always stay in contact with my girlfriend and I wouldn't want to upset her.
A lot of times people don't think ahead about what consequences may come of their actions.
I find it ridiculous that people even text at all, it doesn't make any sense to me. Why would you waste your time trying to send short text messages on a device that was never meant to be used that way, when you can simply talk to the person (not that I'm saying you should talk on the phone while driving). It's a danger to everyone on the road when somebody is texting while driving.

I will be first to say that texting while driving is dangerous. But it wont stop because you will have people out there who will think, "I'm a great driver, i can text and drive. I could never get in an accident". Thus showing that those people are usually top of the list to have accidents. Our society has been so consumed by texting, we look like robots with our eyes glued to our cell phones.

It is so addicting! I have a hard time stopping when my parents say so. It is a lot easier that calling. And it is fun to click the buttons. And you can have a conversation without people hearing you. So it is more private. But we should try to avoid texting. It will be a struggle but we can manage. I think the reason they don't stop texting while they're driving is because (maybe they realize the problem or maybe they don't) they probably don't think it will happen to them. Either that or they need to contact some one, and don't think that they will die by doing that. They might just not want to stop driving.
People are constantly trying to multi-task in an effort to speed up and get things done quicker. People really should just slow down and wait for better times to text and communicate to others.

I think people still text while driving because they can't stop and also if they ignore a message maybe the person texting them will get mad at them for not replying. Also because they think that they can be one of those people who won't get in a crash if they are texting at the same time.

Well people should take a break from texting while driving and working with heavy equipment because if you get in an accident your insurance wont let you off the hook because you werent smart enough to not text while doing these things. its silly to think that people get in bad accidents for something as little as texting. just take a couple minutes, set your phone down and get where you need to be or do what you have to do. not that hard. so just take some time and be safe because nobody wants to say they got in an accident for texting!!!
I think people want to be social all of the time so they dont want to stop texting while driving. I have almost wrecked my truck by texting and driving but yet i still do it. Maybe its because i just want to be socializing at all times.
If it was up to me, every state in america would have the rule of not texting when driving.

Coach Wyatt's 3rd Block Current Events class say's we believe that people continue to text while driving for a number of reasons: mainly because we beleive that people do not want to be rude to the person sending the message and they want to reply quickly. We also believe that texting is an addiction, and many people are also beleive that they can multitask when in reality they should only be focused on their driving!

I think that people get way into texting. I think that is way to risky to text while driving, and people need to STOP! This accident is proof that bad thinks happen while texting. I hope this makes people think twice about texting while driving.
I think texting is very dangerous because you can't pay attention to two things at once. I am not even able to text and I don't like texting. It is easier to have a conversation with someone when you can acutally understand them rather than trying to learn texting language.
For some texting is the greatest thing in the world, but I think that it should not be brought on the road. I think we don't need to "disconnect" if you're good at it. Texting while driving is bad if you don't know how to do it.
I know people will do it , even if Illegal. That just how things are.
I think that people are now obsessed with texting, and many people have to answer their phone as soon as they recieve a message. Also, people don't realize the danger that there is when texting and driving.
In our society where you can be reached at any time, it is impossible for people to stop texting even just for a few minutes so that they can safely drive. It is viewed as rude if you don't answer back text messages, even if you are in your car driving. I think that is why so many people put their lives at risk just for a text message.

People can't stop doing it because it's like a drug. Once you take it you can't get off, and people need to learn to stop this. They don't understand that they are a danger to everyone around them and themself. That's why the others states should ban texting while driving. You know, slowly ease them off of texting while driving if possible.

when i turn 16 i will be more muture about my driving and texting . well i can't even text right now because i dont have a phoneand i am not even closeto getting my drivers licence because it will be 6 more years . texting teenagers who are driving are down right not very safe .hope this eventually becomes illegal.

I do not think that you should text when you drive because you need to keep your hand on the wheel and then press all those buttons on your phone. I also think when you text you need to keep your head down and when you drive you need to keep your head up. First off, I think that many people should not text and drive,because I mean look at the man who drag raced on that rode and where did he end up in...the hospital???NO he ended up pushing up daisy's(Dead). And just because that cellphones are illegal to use while driving,dose not mean that you should text in-stead,i mean do you you really have to talk to somebody that bad??and what might probably already happend was that teens who just learned how to drive (before the rule was established) took advantage of the texting rule(until now or they'll get pulled over).So i just wanted to clear up what i thought

My sister texts while driving when my parents aren't in the car. It's scary. She does it because she says she has to talk to her boyfriend every second. People probably text while driving to stay in touch with loved ones.

It might just be a habit for some people to text while driving, and they just cant break it even if they know the dangers.
I think that people still do it becuase they dont think before they drive. If everybody would just stop txting while driving for just a little while there would be less accidents in the country. but i could be wrong
Honestly, people are just too obsessed with texting and talking on their phones. If you want to take your phone some where, go ahead. But turn it off when you're driving. It should be illegal in every country. People worry about things like, "Oh no, my girlfriend might get worried 'cause I'm not texting her back." Who cares!?!?!?! You should really be worrying about your safety.
In life it may seem faster to do more then one thing at a time but in the long run it will hurt you. Its best to just keep your mind on one thing at a time.

I think that people text while they are driving because they think that connecting to other peple is more important then paying attention to the road.

I thik young drivers keep texting because they are fearless. Also it might get addicting. Also they think they know nothing is going to happen but another second there in a car crash. And my opion is that we have had to much crashes over texting. And those people who text are risking there lives just for that one little tex that they sent.
People may think that texting while driving is safe because they have never been into an accident when texting and driving, but car accidents can happen at any second if you are not completely focused on the road.

People text during driving because maybe they have to much confidence in themselves, and they believe that getting into an accident while texting will never happen to them. Some people just don't realize the danger that they are putting others and themselves in, so they continue to text.
To me tewting while driving is a major problem teenagers dig themselves by having cell phones. Cell phone used for emergencys are useful but phones should not be permitted. Tewting while is a bigger problem than Carl Azuz's puns. Yours puns just the eyes off the storys.
i think people still do it because they been use to it and cant let go of that feeling to just text or check your message 2 seconds- people !! it takes that little so what ??- well you get into some accident- my older sister waits until we stop she knows that message can wait! =)
I believe that people continue to text while they are driving because they want to be rebellious. Teens especially love being rebellious and I believe that is why they still text while driving. Also, most people don’t go around saying, “ Today I’m going to get in a car crash.” People don’t think that way, they think that they are invincible and nothing bad will happen to them, but the truth is that bad things happen all the time.

Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should do it. Many people (including teens) don't think of the risk of driving and multi-tasking. That takes maturity and a realization that it is not necessary to answer every phone,text,twit you get. Sometimes it is better to wait for a "reflective moment".

People do it because they think they can do two things, even though they're really being stupid. Driving needs your undivided attention. It's nothing like guitar. I can play guitar without looking at the fretboard even in some solos and talk at the same time while pressing my distortion pedal. If I did that while driving, I'd crash, no doubt about it. Also, I hate texting. Why not just talk instead? (Not while driving.)

I think that we are just too caught up to care. They show that stuff on the news and the people think "oh that will never happen to me!" so they just keep on doing it. It's kind of like when you hear about a burglary and you forget about it and leave your doors unlocked then they steal your' stuff and you think to your' self "I probably should've locked my doors right?".
I think it's pretty stupid to text and drive at the same time. Not only have you heard about it in the news, but my natural instinct would be to not take my eyes off of the road. Texting is like second nature to most people who have cell phones, so when they go somewhere, i think some people don't even realize what they are doing because they always text.
I believe people can't disconnect and stop texting even when their life is in danger because it is addicting. I also think that it is easier to say something while texting rather than being audible. It is a trend, if you don't do it you will feel out of the loop or uncool. Almost everyone I know texts and it has sort of just become a way of life for them. They don't have to call them up and have a complete conversation with the person, it is a lot simpler to text the person because it is faster and more convenient. It is also very addicting because more than one person can talk to you and you have to manage being able to talk to more than one person at a time. You also have to be able to keep up with all the different conversations. It is extremely dangerous to text while driving or even riding a bike near traffic.

I think that the problem with texting and talking while driving is that people can't stand to be disconnected from each other for even a couple of minuets. This generation is constantly talking to each other on Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, and obviously by texting.
Every time you drive a car there is risk involved. I understand that using a cell phone while driving is dangerous, but I think making laws prohibiting cell phone use while driving doesn't solve anything. It would just be another way for the state to collect revenue by issuing out more tickets. It would also add to the needless government micro-managing. People need to use common sense. If texting while driving is too much of a distraction for you, you shouldn't do it. In this case, the punishment is the crime. If you get in an accident and seriously injure yourself and others because you are careless, the last thing you want on your mind is a citation for texting
People can't unplug because once you star, it's hard to stop. I know people who text and talk on the phone while they drive...until they see a police car, then they hang up.
I think it is dangerous but sometimes it should be ok. I mean what if someone in your family died or was injured. If you don't answer that then that will be devastating for that family. With no texting dose that mean that there are no phone calls either. I text alot i rarley ever talk on the phone.
In my opinion people these days can't disconnect from texting because in our era everyone needs to stay in contact with everyone at all times. I know for me i am always texting and that is because that is how i make my plans with friends. I think that once someone gets attached to something (like talking on the phone alot, playing videogames, or watching lots of T.V) they begin to depend upon it more and it becomes a part of their lives they feel they cannot live without. So in the case of people texting alot, even at inappropriate times, perhaps they feel that they can't stop even though they really could if they willed themselves to. Maybe when they drive and text, they feel confident because they've been texting for a long time so they think that texting won't distract them. Or maybe they are just bored and like to fiddle with their phones. Perhaps one of the issues is that they really don't think about the huge risks and dangers their texting could have beyond the phone and actually think about doing something about those risks. So I guess when push comes to pull, it all comes down to the individual and their choice on when and where to text as well as facing the consiquences for their actions.

I think that so many people can't disconnect, because they're so addicted to it and the new technology. Today, not only kids have texting but also adults have texting which I think is just as bad. I see so many adults texting while they're driving, and really the easier thing to do is just dial the phone number and talk to them. In our society today, we're loosing the conversation aspect of the telephone. We're loosing the meaning of what the telephone was made for. With texting no one either bothers calling the person. Texting is a quick deal, and it doesn't cause so concentration. Though talking on the phone does, but I think that it's better. Because you get to here the persons voice and have a longer conversation and not worry how many sentences you're sending to add up to $80.

A personal belief about why people can�t hang up there phone is because life isn�t how it used to be 10 years ago. Everyone�s lives are so busy and chaotic and cell phones are the only way to keep in touch and updated on events.
Yeah, texting is really addictive, i can't stop. but some people can't multi-task, i know i can't. So, there so into texting, and it might be a like "emergency" text. But i don't see why they can't just call them or text them later. Gossip can wait :]
I agree that texting while driving is very dangerous. Just about two weeks ago, where I go to school, there was an accident because a lady was texting. But why can't we stop texting even though its dangerous? Well why can't people stop smoking, when they know its unhealthy for them? Its a habit and sometimes we just don't think it will be us, who will get in the accident.
I am going away to a different country. i can't wait to go. i'm leaving on the 13 of june.
One student feels that it is a bad idea because it causes a lot of accidents. The drivers are paying more attention to their phone and not to the road. Another student thinks that if you can text without looking then it is ok to drive while texting. Another student thinks that it easier to text because the cops cant see you doing it and wont get caught. One student thinks that people text so much that it has become a habit and they have to do it all the time, even while driving. Those that are textting think they are cool doing it and they dont want to miss out on any texts.
One student feels that it is a good idea to text while driving only if you can text while not looking at your phone. Another student feels that if someone has something important to say they may text you and you might need to see what they are saying. Another student felt that he was in the middle of the topic. He said that it is dangerous and could cause accidents but for some people they can handle doing both. Some of the students had varying opinions on why people still text while driving. Some do it to test the law and others do it to get business information that might be important to them.
The reason why people can't disconnect from texting is because they are to addicied to it. People should make the effort to stop texting while driving until they at least get to where they are going. It is not a good idea to text while driving.
I believe that it is right to ban texting while driving. That just endangers people's lives.Why do people even text while they drive? It isn't neded at all. Plus when you text it puts your life and other people's lives at risk.
People still text they drive. They don't see the dangers ahead of them. Sometimes it's annoying also.
Don't text while you drive. You're a hazard to everybody on or near the road. If you do text, make sure you are at a complete stop.
When the cell phone was introduced, people thought that it was the greatest thing in the world. That craze has yet to die down. When you go into any of my classes, you can expect to see people pulling out their cell phones and check their incoming messages or send a message. It is possible that this craze will end, but we must act before more lives are lost at the hands of "driving while intexticated". If the country, or even the world followed the steps of the state of California and banned talking on the phone and texting while driving, this situation would all be over and done with.
i love to text! but when i start to drive ( not for a long long time) i dont want to get in a carcrash cause some one was texting! i could die!
I think it’s because people grow up texting so much, they can’t stop. So they use texting while driving.

People today can't seem to live without their cellphones, especially teenagers. Unfortunately, they have caused many distractions for people. It surprises me that people talk on the phone while driving, but text messaging is even more dangerous, because you have to look at the keys and in a lot of cases, you need both hands! Not only does texting while driving put the driver in danger, but is is just as hazardous to other people on the road, because the person texting is paying attention to the message they're sending rather than keeping their eyes on the road. The recent law that banned people from talking on the phone while driving (unless they have a headset) was a smart one and i believe that texting while driving should be just as bad an offense. This law should be strictly enforced, because it is becoming habit to some people and it is dangerous to have disconnected people driving down the street and taking the risk of crashing.
people allways still text in the road but they dont know they have to stop for there safty and the safty of there pasengers

i think it's is very dengerous to use mobile phone during driving because, it is rick your life to a crash accident . if you do both things you can't focus on both of them . people should not breake the rules.
