Daylight Meteor over Texas?

The reason for the question mark here is that we're still not sure what the thing was.  Called a "fireball" and recorded by a videographer covering a footrace, the object that streaked across the Texas sky looked a lot like a meteor and was accompanied by a sonic boom.

What we do know, according to the U.S. Strategic Command, is that it wasn't the remains of satellites that collided in orbit last week.  A spokeswoman from the command said, "It's possible it was some kind of natural phenomenon - maybe a meteor."

It certainly looked like that to me.  I've seen a few of those before, though rarely that bright and never in the daytime.  What do you think it was?

It wouldn't be the first time. In fact at my Elementary, which is in Texas, our mascot was the Meteors and we had an actual meteor in a display case.

I think it probably was a meteor or maybe even some other kind of debris, besides that of the satellites, because there is a bunch in space.

I think it was just a meteor that had fallen from orbit. What else would fall from space and have a sonic boom along with it? Aliens? haha......Right

I don't know, maybe it was a message from mars!

It could have ben some sort of space junk or maybe it really was a meteor coming in tired from flying all over space, and it was too tired to wait for night fall, when your a rock you can't tell what time it is before you hit the ground anyway.

I think it could of been a meteor, although to have seen and heard it in broad daylight, then my assumption is it would have had to be a pretty darn big one.

I think that that falling object was a meteor because meteors have different brightness to it. I don't think it was part of the satellites because even though it was from space, it wouldn't take from Thursday to Monday to come and hit the ground.

I obviously think that it was a mutant alien bunny Sasquatch being
Or it just could be a meteor. Either way it was cool how the cameraman caught that on tape. There was a sonic boom and none of the runners turned around?

    February 17, 2009 at 8:59 am |

I believe that it was a meteor and was probably just natural. Meteors happen all the time. It was probably just a rock or something.

I think it could have been a UFO. It had that oddly shaped look and had some kind of radiation like looking coming off of it. This person happened to be in the right place at the right time.

The phenomenon could posibly be considered anything. To an ecentric it could be aliens that have come to harvest our blood like in war of the worlds, or a government conspiracy that they wish to keep secret, but that's probably out of the question because they'd probably say it was part of the satelite. To someone a little more rationaly minded it looks to be a meteor of course that is probably false due to the fact of its brightness. The thing is we realy don't know what it is

I honestly don't beleive that could have been part of one of the satelites that collided. It's very unlikely that it could have gone without deteriorating in our atmosphere. It's possible that it was a meteor, but i doubt a meteor would cause a sonic boom. I agree with the spokes woman; it seems to be some kind of natural phenomenon.

Honestly i believe it was a meteor. Many meteors collide in to Earth's atmosphere every day, though most do not make it to the trophesphere before being deterriorated into dust, some are very large and can make it to earth's crust. And like I said, even Carl Azuz has seen them before.

I've researched on these things and found three things likely...
    1. U.F.O falling down because of laviation problem.(Mayve the U.S Army will hid them In Roswell!)
    2. Daylight comet.(If that's true the guy who caught them on camera can name it since no one ever knew about the presence of this bizzare extraterrestrial-thingy)
    3. .......The most likely and possible of all YOU CARL!!!! Carl AZUZ as ailen from outer space!!!

    Daylight Meteor over Texas?

I think that it was a meteor. But I don't know for sure. It could have been anything.

I think it was a meteor, The Earth gets bombarded with meteors daily, its just luck of the draw of which Meteor will break through the atmosphere.

  16. Emmett

It's very hard to tell what it was if you weren't really there I mean I feel like you have to be there to know what it is and they still don't know what it is so really it could be anything from outer space.

    February 17, 2009 at 10:03 am |
  17. Taylor

It might be a meteor. But it also could have been a piece of the satellites. I can't really decide.

    February 17, 2009 at 10:03 am |
  18. Tyler

I do not think that it is a satellite but it could be an alien space ship part or a actual ship all together and that would prove that there is life out there!

    go aliens!!!!

  19. Devon

I say that it was a Fireball because it was coming very fast and it looked on fire. Maybe they should find it so they know what it is!

    February 17, 2009 at 10:04 am |
  20. Brian

I think it might be a bad thing that it fall because it could be a bomb from something or it could be a pieace of our satellite from spack or it could be something else.

    February 17, 2009 at 10:04 am |
  21. Mitch

I think it was a piece of satellite from last week

    February 17, 2009 at 10:04 am |

i think that it is also a fireball to because it looks round like a ball.

    February 17, 2009 at 10:04 am |
  23. Shaun

I think that it was a meteor from the sonic boom like the spokesman said.

    February 17, 2009 at 10:05 am |
  24. Nick

i think that it was some kind of part from the satellite just because there is nothing that comes from there different really.

    February 17, 2009 at 10:05 am |
  25. Alexander

I think it was a piece of the satellite collision in space. It was white, so it couldn't be a meteor. Meteors wouldn't break the sound barrier either.

    February 17, 2009 at 10:07 am |
  26. Brittney

I don't think it was anything to big like a meteor. If it was it would have been a lot louder and EVERYONE would have heard it. It think it was just a satellite.

    February 17, 2009 at 10:07 am |
  27. Brittany

I am not sure what that was. It looked like a meteor, but I have never seen a meteor. So it could be that or it could be something else.

    February 17, 2009 at 10:07 am |
  28. Josh

I first thought it was a falling start but I think that only happens at night. A piece of satellite that fell down was probably what it was. That would be pretty cool if it was a meteor but I donʻt think it was.

    February 17, 2009 at 10:08 am |
  29. brady

I think that it was a chunk of of the Mars. It broke the atmosphere, and then it couldnʻt hold the pressure of the gravity. Then it went boom, and now we have no evidence.

    February 17, 2009 at 10:08 am |
  30. Samantha

I think that it is just a little meteorite.

    February 17, 2009 at 10:08 am |

I think it was an alien and he was skydiving from the Hubble. Or it might have been part of the satellites that crashed. I hope nobody got crushed to death very bloodily.

I think that the meteoroid is just the satellites crashing together. Because what else could that have been?

Why couldn't it be the remains of the satellites that collided. That would be the most logical answer. I guess we will just have to wait and see if anything happens with it to make a for sure answer, but for right now, anything is possible, from a meteor to a UFO...no one knows.

    February 17, 2009 at 11:12 am |
  41. Nick

Its just a regular meteor. A flying saucer wouldn't have flames coming from behind it "Franny". Its just a meteor. Not a Piece of the satalites that collided together.

Well, on the video, the "UFO" was silver, so I think it was a couple of satelites, like you said.

    February 17, 2009 at 12:45 pm |
  46. Charlie

That is not a meteor. It is probably part of the two sattalites. Carl, your jokes need to be a little less "funny."

No way. That is a scientific impossiblity. That was NOT a meteor. The most common meteor orbits our solar system and comes around yearly. Today is not that day and sense a satelite just fell out of orbit I know I'm right.

    February 17, 2009 at 12:47 pm |
  49. Charlie

I agree with the scientist that the thing that fell out of the sky was part of the collision in space.

i think that it could have been a secret objet from area 51 that they dont want us to know about. the goverment that is they probalbly think were not capable to understand and mabey there right but it could be anything.

It was definitely a UFO. You never see meteors during the day. It had to be big, too.

    February 17, 2009 at 1:33 pm |
  53. jon

I think it was a metor that didn't burn up all the way in the atmosphere and fell to earth in a weird way. It also came from a fair space from earth to gain the speed it did like all of the debri in the outer most atmosphere.☺

    February 17, 2009 at 1:49 pm |
  54. Annie

Meteor?–>Err, sure. I guess it could be, but that looked like a pretty small meteor compared to some that could have happened!

    February 17, 2009 at 1:49 pm |

We here in Texas have two theories: Large amount of space debris burning up in orbit, or somebody added to much spice to the chili. You be the judge.

  56. Indiana Girl

Why couldn’t it be the remains of the satellites that collided. That would be the most logical answer. But everybody is going have a different opinion about this. I guess we will just have to wait and see if anything happens with it to make a for an answer, but for right now anything is possible!

what we saw here was something that was not from our galaxy, and we probably will never see an event like this captured on film for a long time. I think that maybe something extraterrestral was either going to, or coming from Rosewell, New Mexico to try to find it's friends that landed there in the 50's....take it or leave it, thats my theory.

    February 17, 2009 at 4:07 pm |
  58. Cece

I think that it was a piece of something that was floating in space and randomly ran into us. That or a message from the aliens! Ah!

    February 17, 2009 at 5:45 pm |
  59. Courtney

It could be a meteor, as it's not like the meteor actually decides when it's going to fall. There might be many other daylight meteors, but they wouldn't be as easy to see and might not create a sonic boom.

And it could be debris from any other smashed machines in space. This isn't the first time something floated off in space.

I happen to think it is a satalite from last week from the russian one because they didn't even tell us if it was part of theirs or i could be wrong you never really know.

I think its unclear but interesting. You cant see it very well because of the camera person, the camera was wigilling too much to tell exactly.

That sure looked like one of those fake "alien" flying discs to me. Like the ones that fool people into thinking that aliens are real. That is the only logic to the "flying space fire"

    February 17, 2009 at 8:47 pm |
  68. nina.

    oh snap.
That is absolutley wild. Maybe it was something from a UFO? Or posssibly a top secret government project reetnering the athmosphere? But whatever it is, it has obviously made a big enough commotion to the point where we as citizens should be allowed to know what it was. No secrets Obama, remember? Ahaha:D
Or maybe it was an extraterrestrial coming to show you up at dancing! He thinks he could take you: yeah, right!

    February 17, 2009 at 9:03 pm |
  69. Rachel

I agree. I think it's from the two satilights crashing together. Carl, you're jokes are not too good, but you got to work on it.

    February 17, 2009 at 10:09 pm |
  70. KK

Well you never know what it could be. The sources that Carl said sound pretty logical and easy to understand. Man, I wish something would happen in Nevada. (Besides all the casinos because all of them are for the grownups!) I hope it is a meteor and Texas is pretty LUCKY! 🙂

    February 17, 2009 at 11:25 pm |
  71. Drew

I highly doubt this was a meteor. No matter what is said, this is obviously just debris from the satellite collision. What, people didn't run over to it to see what it was? Geez.

    February 18, 2009 at 12:12 am |
  72. Jeremiah

I think that the meteroite might be part of the sattalite that colided. I think it would be cool to be there when it landed. I hope that they find the pieces that fell from the sky.

    February 18, 2009 at 8:48 am |
  73. Paige

I think that it was probably just a meteor. I doubt because it was during daylight and brighter then usual that it wouldn't be one. What are the chances of it being some sort of martian? Not very high. Maybe they should find out where it landed, and see if anything is there.

    February 18, 2009 at 8:52 am |
  74. The Stevester

Everybody knows how sneaky the government is, they cover up who knows how many accidents and incidents. To think that it was not a piece of the collided satellites is kind of hard to believe. It might not have been that, it could have been a meteor, but I can't explain the sonic boom.

  83. Alexx

    – Hmh, well metors happen once in a while and its a natrual shooting star, if its stuff from the colllision all we really need to worry about is if more is coming down so that maybe NASA can do something about it. One thing I do know is that there are no green gross aliens coming down to abduct Carl Azuz or the rest of us. People need to calm their heads down about it, it was at the least, a falsh of light!

The meteor you saw, was actually an object from deep space. My family had an up close vision of it and probed the remnants of the break off. What we found was fantastic. It was you, Carl Azuz!

The Aliens Have Landed!! Just kidding. The only thing I can think of is a meteor. A lot of rocks fly through space all the time so it's very possible to see one fight through earth's atmosphere. However, if it is indeed a meteor then it's the first one I’ve ever seen.

It really is just a chunk of space junk that flew through our atmosphere. Nothing more then that. I was maybe those two satellites that collided, so yeah, space junk. What do you think it was? Aliens? Gimme a break.....

Why would you want to know what the fireball thing that just flew over your head is called.....i would just be glad it didn't land on me. Once i got over the fact it went directly over me, then i would look further into what it was called.

I think that its really cool how it might have been a meteor. I still think it might be a meteor even if people might wonder something else.

    February 25, 2009 at 7:45 pm |
  101. Salena

That is super cool, but wouldn't it be impposible for a meteor to get through the atmosphere? Meteors are supposed to burn and disinigrate before they have a chance to make it to Earth. Hmmmm....something to think about.

    February 26, 2009 at 7:57 am |

Whoevers house it landed on should cell it on ebay.

I acually couldnt tell you what it was because i never been to texas.
but whoevers house it landed on should chip it into a million peices and sell it on craigslist... or ebay..... anything works.
it would be awesome though if it landed right in a museum doing hardly damage to the ceiling. It would be an almost free if we didnt have to fix the roof, exhibit.

Ive watched all of those videos and i completely think that it is a meteor there isn't much more that it could be but that satellite. and there is one about a farmer that said it crashed there and i definitely think that it is staged

The most logical answer is the debrie when the two satillites that colided over earth and then it fell to earth. if it was a nuc there would be no one to prove it, they'd all be dead.

i think it was a meteorite because i have seen a meteorite before down in texas when i was 5. i think that the sonic boom was just the meteorite crossing into the atmosphere.

I don't know what it was but I was on the golf course at Castle Hills and I saw it while on the 7th tee box. A bright fireball and gone in seconds.
