Racism an Issue?

Is racism an issue in America today?

Nobody in Tony Harris' report on Thursday said America is beyond race.  But most seemed to agree that the country had moved beyond the racism of the 1960s. And when you compare today's diversity of our government and our corporations and our schools to how it was back then, it's easy to see how things have changed.

The question isn't whether racism still exists - it clearly does in all races of today's society. But we'd like you to vote and comment on whether it's still a major issue in today's America, versus the America of your grandparents.

Racism isn't as bad as it was for our grandparents, but racism is ALWAYS going to be around. Society as a whole fears differences.

Yes it is in fact a issue because at the school that I attend you can see whites hanging with whites and blacks with blacks. My school is like in the south also so you can really see the racial problem.

I think that it is still an issue, but it is better than in the past.
We can prevent it by learning from the past, talk to others about the subject and then show what we know by creating a better future.

Racism will still be one of the issues of America-as little or as big.
But we think that racism isn't that bad as it was in the olden days.
What we're sure about is, that racism based on skin color is not the main standard as it was when our grandparents lived

Yes. It might not be such a big issue but I believe it will exist in some way. And also, in a way, racism on such standards which have existed for a long time will fade away and racism might not be that strong anymore.

  9. Clouder

No way. Racism will be groing weaker, but some new subjects on racism might pop up. I believe that racism is not going to be that a big deal in the future.

Racism will exist. But the major subjects in racism might fade away, or likely. I'm in a international school and you can see no racism in here. I hope America will turn to be a openminded country, with not much racism

I've heard that Americans treat people from a former enemy country unfairly. We might not still not like that country, or look them in a bad way, but just because they are from that country does not mean that they are responsible for the things their ancestors have done. We need to live in the modern age. If every American looks at foreigners that way, then America will be a country where racism is strong.

We might have broken a few glass ceilings but racism is still going to exist, and in a strong way ,if we still blame people for what their ancestors have done in the past.
Foreigners should be able to look at America with admiring eyes, but Americans are somtimes unjust, and do not forget the past and forgive.

We think that there will still be a wall of racism that blocks people from having complete freedom. Thinking about the past is not going to help if we want America to be a country where racism is not a big issue. Look at foreigners with a neutral view. We cannot blame them for the past because they did not do it and they might have different thoughts from other people. We think that racism with countries is the strongest, which may make other people look at America in a disapproving glance in return.

I think racism is a problem to a point, but it's not right. I don't judge cherry pie by the crust, it's cherry pie on the inside right?

Racism is../ Better then it has been in the past.
    But it's still here.
I hoped we have learned not to, but it's still here.
I think it will be always here, despite the years.
So yes, it is still a problem.
Not a major one, or a minor one, just a regular sized one.

I think race is still an issue in America. Although I'm a foreigner, I look newspapers and CNN news daily so I know some things about race. If race is not an issue in America then why the medias are so eager to report Barack is an 'African America'? If it was McCain who was voted for the president the newspapers will just report 'McCain elected' and not will be this eager to report about him – at least this is what I think.
But like any other students who wrote comments before me, it is better than my grandfather's days.

Racism is still a huge issue today, everybody says America has given people equal rights but they are WRONG! I read a story that the day before the New Year that to African American's were walking up to one of their driveway's. A cop who came out of the shadows out of nowhere told them to get on the ground, because they stole that car which was one of the African American's. That cop was profiling big time. Anyways... The African American's parents come out to see what was going on and guess what. The cop shoved the woman against the wall and shot the "suspect" on the ground. The African American is in the hospital severely injured and the cop IS going to spend the rest of his life in jail. Why can't people understand that African American's are people too and they have feelings. They don't want to be hurt as much as anybody else does.

I feel that even though the country has come a long way, we're still in a place where racism exists. I think that we all know racism is wrong so instead of saying there's racism we tend to hide it, but not so well.

Racism is still there, it will always be there. But I’ve grown up I look on my left I look on my right and there’s two different colors. I've grown up in a multicultural environment so it’s not a big deal for me and there are people who it is a big deal for them. Racism real and its scary don’t think it’s gone it’s still very much there.

i think racism is still an issue but not as bad as it was in the 60's because we have come as far as to electing an african-american president. YA OBAMA!!! 🙂

I think that now since we elected an African-American president everything will fade. I think that even though racism will still be on the back burner, it is becoming less of an issue.

I think that we still all think of racism and just because Obama is black does not mean that he will be a better president or a worse president (he would be great either way) and because black people are getting jobs not slaved is a huge improvment.

Racism isn't as big of an issue as it used to be, but behind backs, there is still probably some racism going on...Racism hasn't gone away, and I would probably expect a lot more racism to come, this is because some people have problems with different people..."Xenophobia"...

yes I think that racism is still a problem. even thought we have been through a lot to abolish racism there are still people who think that racism is ok. and even though it is very roung people still think that they are beter than some one els becuase they have a differant skin color. I don't think that it is going to go away I think that people will just try to hide it more.

Racism is still there, it will always be there and just because we have elected a new President it doesn’t change anything. This just makes it harder on President Obama because of his color; he was at the bottom and rose to the top. Racism is still an issue in some areas but it has gotten better then when our grandparents were kids.

    January 15, 2009 at 8:40 am |

i don't know and i think that that will be a lot of peoples answer is that they just don't know. We don't see it on a regular basis but it is still out there so you can't really tell if the people of the U.S. are beyond racism because we have elected an african american president.

As long as whites, blacks, asians, arabs, and jews live together in the same land there will allways be issues. Look at South Africa or Israel. They are both great examples of how races cannot live together in harmony. If you want to fix the "race" problem in this nation take Abraham Lincons advice and give the blacks reparations for there land and ship them back to Africa. Same thing with Latinos and all other non white races. ITs like putting lion and tigers together, there going to fight.

Yes I think racism is still an issue. I am an african american, and I hear racist remarks everyday. The reason I don't get mad is because some people they don't notice that they sound racist.

  40. Mr. Tegens Class

Hi Carl, our class disscussed the issue of racism in class today and we believe that racism in America will never completely go away because some people have racism hardwired into their lives. It's the way that they were raised and it was taught to them by their parents and they will teach it to their children and grandchildren and it is a cycle that will not end for a long long time.

  53. Mrs. Spivey's AM SHOW Class

We agree that racism is still a major issue here in America. It may not be in the forefront as much as it was in our parents generation but it is still just as tragic a crime in society. Until people realize that is takes teaching children to be accepting rather than teaching them to be exclusionary or prejudice for any reason we have a long way to go. When people feel slighted by someone else it is human nature to then pass judgement and catagorize and it will only be through teaching and training that that behavior changes.

I think racism today is not an issue as it was in the 1960's,
but it's still problem. The KKK still exists but it's very very small compared to the1960's. Racism is still there but people are not as open about their discrimination.

    January 15, 2009 at 9:52 am |
  55. Bobipher

From my experiences I still think racism is an issue. Just because racism is less advertised that doesn't mean it has vanished from our ever-changing country. I mean the Ku Klux Klan is still in existence and every other day there is news about some person under the eye of the paparazzi making a racist comment. So on the contrary to 14% of our nation I believe racism is a problem.

    January 15, 2009 at 9:53 am |

Racism is not quite as much of an issue as it used to be. It still seems to be a problem though. Parents should be more careful of what they are teaching their children. They may not always be aware of it, but they could be the cause of some serious controversy. The color of someone's skin should not make a difference on how they are treated. Everyone is the same on the inside, and that should be all that matters. Hopefully in the future, racism will be completely forgotton and no longer a problem.

Unfortunately racism still exists, it may not be as known, or talked about now, but it is still around. We may be accepting of races now, but some people don`t like Asians, or African Americans, which fuels racism.

Racism has been a big deal in our country for the last 50 or so years, But I feel that people are thinking to much about the past and not enough about now, for all of the americans in the US racism is a minority.

I think racism is definitely still an existing problem. Too many people judge others by their color, and it is not right. People are people, different color or not. Nobody should be excluded because of their color.

I don't think that Racism is not as big of a problem as it used to be in the 1960s. I think that a lot of people have moved on and don't really care what race or color you are. I think that our nation has gone along way and progressed a lot.

    January 15, 2009 at 10:13 am |
  76. Taylor

I don't really think racism is a problem in the nation. I think that everybody is the same, just that some people are different in color. Some people just don't know that some people are shaded in a little bit more than others.

    January 15, 2009 at 10:14 am |
  77. Alayna

Yeah racism is always going to be a problem in this country. It may not be such a big deal where the different races are growing up together but in the cities where the races are seperated it is always going to be a issue. The problem is not as big of deal as it was during the civil war but there are still those few who feel differently.

    January 15, 2009 at 10:58 am |
  78. Geordan

Racism is a problem today because there are jsut so many people making racist jokes and stuff. We make fun of the terrorist that attacked the twin towers but then we make fun of them because of a few people that did it. We still got racism going on right now.

    January 15, 2009 at 11:00 am |

I think that no one should be race because we all the same. I look at most people as the same.So what about you?

    January 15, 2009 at 11:01 am |
  80. Marissa

Well it's really not an issue, it's only an issue if someone makes it one. If we are positive about the fact that people except others than things will get better. But if we keep it an issue and keep saying that it is than it will always be one and racism will never go away. Things are only what you make them.

    January 15, 2009 at 11:02 am |
  81. Veronica

I don't think that we're beyond Racism YET! We've taken a big step since the 1960's, though. The kids of the future should see two different colors and think nothing bad of it! People just need to realize that we can't help how we are!

    January 15, 2009 at 11:03 am |
  82. Kyler

I think that racism is a problem today. This will always be a problem in America. We will evolve more and more but this problem will never go away. Just because we have a african-american president-elect doesn't mean that all racism is just going to disappear.

    January 15, 2009 at 11:06 am |
  83. Sarah

I think that it is a issue still. I think it has changed a lot but it is still an issue. In the olden days we had all white and al black schools and now we can go to the same school. Also back in the olden days whites had more rights then blacks did and now we have about the same. Yeah we still have problems but it has changed a lot. Some white people treat black people badly because that is how they were raised. So yes it is still a problem.

    January 15, 2009 at 11:07 am |
  84. Xitlali

Yes this is one of the few problems in America people don't like people because of the color of there skin..... This problem bothers me a lot.... I think every one should treat every one the same

I'm in a Girl Scout troop that is all white in the south and I think racisim is still a problem because when my troop went to montgomery for a civil rights day, I saw many Girl Scout troops that were all black or all white. I don't even think I saw a mixed troop. Everyone from each troop was still friendly to each other, but these girls split up and hung out with people that were their skin color.

  87. amber

I still think racism is an issue, but it is not as horrible as it was back in the past. I think that people can learned to not be racist if they really want to. One people should not be treated any different than another person just because of their religion, looks, skin color, or any other reason.

I do think that racism is still an issue, but it is not the main idea that everyone thinks about, when they see a colored person. There is still a bump in the road on this particular issue, but no one has hit it and made a big deal about it.

I think that racism is still a problem but it isn't as bad as it was years ago. I don't think that people should have a problem with the color of peoples skin. I think that it doesn't matter what color there skin is, what really matters is how they truely are. And what there personality is. Hopefully people realize that its not good to judge by there color but by there personality.

Less than 6 months ago I was traveling in NW Georgia. There was a neon sign outside a convenience store (that happened to have a large inventory of rebel flags) that overtly made negative references towards African Americans. I found it to be extremely offensive and downright disgusting. Clearly, Racism still exists in America. This fact makes it even more astounding that next Tuesday our country will be inaugurating an African American in the White House. It is these types of accomplishments that will lessen the racial barrier in America.

There is racism here in America. I agree with what all the students had to say. People need to look beyond the color of people skins or where they come from. We can't cure racsim but we should teach our future kids of the world that everybody is the same whether they come from a african american family or if they come from a white family. There is really is no diffrence.

I don't think racisim is as big as it used to be, but I feel no matter what people are going to keep seperating themselves because of some factor in their life wether it be the color of their skin or how much money they make.

It is a bad issue today. There has been a lot of racial jokes and slurs about other races or skin color and all sorts of things. I think it was worse for my grandparents because there was a lot more racists then, than there is now.

  114. Teacher Nicci's Class, East Mesa Juvenile Detention Facility

Our class pretty much agreed that racism is still an issue in the United States. Racism is always going to be around no matter what. It just depends on where you are in the U.S., for example the southern states might have a higher incidence of racism than say California. It also depends on the values that your parents instill in you, whether or not they view different groups as equals or inferiior. Another student felt that racism in normal society is not as bad as it used to be but racism is more evident in our prison systems.

I think racism, though not as bad as it was in the 20th century, will always be a problem in society. As long as there are still differences, there will be those who fear others' differences. I think the ideal America would be as Barack Obama put it: "There is no black America and white America, Latino America and Asian America. There is the United States of America."

I feel that racism has gone down a bit, but racism definitely is still here. No matter what, there will always be the few that think they are better than other people, and are prejudice towards someone racially different. Whenever someone hears "racism" most think about African Americans, and Whites. It isn't just racism between them, it is between many different cultures also, and too many people don't realize that.

Racism is a big issue when people vote based on race and not qualifications. It creates a lot of contraversy and can promote conflict over it. I wish we would all just be americans without concerns about race. America is known for being a melting pot of races and more and more families are becoming mutiracial. We just need to all get along and accept each other regardless of race.

It seems to me that America has a lot of masked racism. Though people say that they aren't, you can still hear rude side-comments about different races and their religions. If people would learn to look beyond another's skin tones they'd see some one quite similar to themselves. Until this problem is solved, I fear for our future generation's behavior towards others and themselves.

I think racism is still an issue. Not everywhere but most places. However, I don't think that it is as big of a problem as it used to be in the past. Racism it tottaly an issue today, it's just not as bad towards the blacks. There are a lot of different groups all over America and it really depends on where you live as to what it's like. The main thing really is the way your tought to think about certain things from a young age.

I personally think that there is still some racism in our country, not as bad as it used to be, but it is still a problem. I know a lot of white people that don't like black people, because of the fact that they feel as though blacks are taking over. I do believe there is racism in all race, but I do not believe that racism is an issue. If there was a group such as the Ku Klux Klan, I believe there is a huge and dangerous issue. Or if there was discrimination in organizations, there is a problem, but around these present days, I do not see or hear about race discrimination at all. There may be in other places but not where I live.

I think that racism is still a problem. It isn't as big of a problem as it was in the 1960's when they had the black and white bathrooms and water fountains. I think having our first black president might help decrease the amount of racism. But it can depend on how the next generation is raised and told about racism. It can also depend on where you live. If you live in a place that is mostly urban area then racism most likely won't be as big of a problem as if you live in a city.

Carl, there is going to be racism no matter what goes on in the world. You will always have those racist groups, and there will be more wars. Everbody has to worry about if your a different color because something could happen.

I think there still is some racism in America, but I think we're mostly over it. The election of Barrack Obama shows that we, as Americans, can look past a person's skin color and judge them for who they really are. It's not that we don't notice the difference between blacks and whites; it's that we don't base our actions on that.

rasicism is an issue. i am a 16 year old african american and i think it is but there are different kinds. some kids are only racist because their familys are and dont want to be in trouble or because their freinds are and dont wanna be uncool but still there is no reason for it at all in my home town there is a park named after my great grandma because she broke color segregation in the schools and she was the first black settler here. as for me i think that rasiscm is a way for someone to hurt some one else and make themselves feel good.

It isn't as bad as in the past, but racism will always be with us, whether we like it or not.

I think that racism will still exist but decreese over time, but no totally because if you were to look back in history things changed. For instance around the 1960's there was a seperation between caucasian and black but later that was changed but not enough. Now we have more of a diversity in school and public places but ther are people who are racist. We cannot change people on how they think.

Racism is an issue back then and now we as people [americans] need to grow up and treat people equally.its a pitty thing to creat a feud about. people are people wether they are white, black ,brown purple...idc...seriously people get over it.

  204. Ms. Fulford's Class

Our class has agreed that racism will always be a problem. Sure, we have broken a few glass ceilings, but all in all racism will exist far into the future. We have it better than our grandparents though, atleast we are not told where to eat and go to school.

I think racism is a issue still today. Whites still hang out with whites and blacks with blacks. It is though going down and it is not coming any worse. I think people should know by now though that we are all people with unique features and were all the same.

Racism is still an issue in America. We are still racist when we have Black History Month and Hispanic Heritage Month. When we decide to thank people by their achievements and not by the color of their skin, then we are not racist.

Yes racism is a problem and for the whole world to stop it will take a while for that to happen. We can always hope though.

Racism is a bad thing. I can't believe racism actually happens in our world. But, Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech has changed our future a little. I think Barack Obama will be a great president!

As much as people do not want to believe it, racism is still an America. But, we have the ability to be tolerant of other races and other people.

Racism definitely isn't as big a problem as it used to be. It's not really a problem now, but sometimes it is an issue, we think.

yes i do think that racism is a problem today .Just yesterday i asked a person not of my color because im colored and she said alot lot of racist things about my color.

It's amazing how strange humans can act, there's no difference between people. Some people have darker skin, and some have lighter... so what? It's like saying someone has green eyes, and another has blue, and because of that one is apparently better. I go to a compound school building, we have 2 schools in the same building. One school is more black, the other more white. There are fights almost every day, it's annoying when you're afraid to go where you want, but you can't.

Yeah racism is still an issue! Just look at all of the commotion Obama’s candidacy stirred up within the country. I’ve encountered numerous students at my school that attack Obama not on his political standpoints but on trivial things such as his middle name and the color of his skin. The fact that so many fellow Americans feel the need to judge and/or demean successful people just on the basis of race, cultural background and of all things NAMES, shows that America is still a very long way from arriving at the utopia that is everybody realizing that we are more alike than different.

i think racism is a big issue white people think they are better and black people think they are better. So we argue about that.. But we are all the same so make up and forgive (:

I think that the issue we should cover first is the issue of the economy. We really need to get our economy in order fast. I also think that after our economy is straitened out the President Obama should focus on the war in Iraq.

I think that racism is still an issue in America today. There are still simple issues like people not wanting to be served in restraunts by African Americans. Now not only is there racism for African Americans, it also now includes asians, chinese, mexicans and a number of other races. Our country is supposed to be above that, America started out by just being a refuge for a number of people, of all races, to escape the opressions of their own countries and to practice their own religions. That should still be what our country stands for, freedom.

I think racism is very high up in issues in the United States. The reason is because we now have the first black president now.Not many whites don't like it but what can we do about it?
We only have him for 4 years and I think he will make good choses though...

racism isn't as bad as it was back in 40's, 50's, and 60's but it is still going on in the U.S.

I think it is a big issue!!! GOD made us the way he wanted us and GOD created all of us with his own hands. We should treat each other the way we would want to be treated. So if someone treat someone bad they shouldn't be praised for treating someone like crap lust because they ain't the same color as you. there is not one person in the whole intire universe that is the same skin color as you do.

    I LOVE YOU CARL!!!!
P.S. ThAt Is JuSt WhAt I tHiNk!!!!!!!!!!!

It depends on the area you live in. Some areas have it more than others. Which in those areas Obama should try to improve the way it's treated.

AMERICA HAS COME A LONG WAY THROUGH RACE,BUT IT'S STILL OUT THERE & I'M PRETTY SURE IT WAS A LOT WORSER BACK IN THE 60'S AND 70'S. NOW DAYS PEOPLE ARE MORE SKEPTICLE ABOUT HOW PEOPLE DRESS,FOR EXAMPLE I WAS TOLD BY A RESTERAUNTBUT HIRING MANAGER,THAT THEY WAS LOOKING FOR HELP,BUT WHEN I FILLED OUT A APPLICATION,I BROUGHT IT BACK A WEEK LATER . THEN WHEN I TALKED TO THE HIRING MANAGER,HE SET ME UP FOR A INTERVIEW,BUT WHEN I CAME DRESSED UP URBAN STYLE SPORTING DICKIES GEAR LOOKING LIKE A HOOD RAPPER-THE MANAGER LOOKED AT MY BRAND NEW RED LUGZ BOOTS & THEN LOOKED AT MY HAT & SAID (THE POSITIONS JUST GOT FILLED. BUT HE CALLED ME?

The issue of racism in america is still a major issue and always will be. The only difference between racism now as opposed to back then is that now it's more hidden. In our grandparents day people could speak about it more open and freely than they can today. So for anyone who says it's not as prevalent today as it was then is mistaken and a bit naive.

to me, i dont think its as big of an issue but now that obama is president it could get close to it. I love all racsis personally.

  231. Tierra

Yes I think it is an issue we face today. Especially now that the election is over with and Barack Obama is our president i most definately feel tension between different races. But i don't look at nobody different. You can be purple or even green to me we all are the same and as long as everyone sticks together and stop looking at the negative side of everything then everything will be alright. 🙂

Yes racism is and will be the issue for the next couple of years. But I think that it will be a dissolving issue and will soon disapear. It is also a reason why more wars and gangs are in the world.

    January 27, 2009 at 8:53 pm |
  233. tyler

Racism is an issue that can not be solved as whole. Its like pot, If you bann it/ make it illigal people will still smoke and sell it. Racism is a personal thing, its like calling fighting an issue.

I think that racism is bad. i also think that people should stop be making fun of people because of how they look or what color they are.

I think that we should at least slightly move on from rasism it is wrong they are no diffrent from us except for the color of their skin we need to move on from that we are not in the 1800s any more but maybe you were born then but if you were stop harshing other peoples vibes! =]

I think that it was more of a problem back when my grandparents were young but it still is a pretty major problem today. I read an article a while back about a wrestler forfeited because it was against his morals to wrestle a girl. I think that is kind of prejudice.

America is probably a country that will always tke thing like this very seriuosly. There are some cases when people are hated just for the colour of their skin. DOes it really matter? But i'll say one thing. If i was green, yes I would be different. But that doesn't seem to matter to me. BEcause it is different, doesn't mean its not something we can also be around and befriend. i fully agree with sean.
