Kid vs. Coyote

A coyote may not be nearly as scary as a wolf.  But it'd still be unnerving for ANYONE - especially a 9-year-old - to have a coyote suddenly start circling him while he was playing outside.

So what 9-year-old Tony Sandlin did was pretty smart:  He yelled for help, but he didn't panic; he kept the snowboard between himself and the animal, and he kicked out at the coyote when it got too close.  Eventually, he frightened off the creature.  And he got a pretty cool story to tell his friends.

If you or your friends have any stories like that, tell us about them here!

So, I was outside in the woods and my grandparents told me to go with a friend, but I was stubborn. I was laying down in there when all of a sudden I heard the shaking of a rattle snakes tail. Boy, I was terrified. It was horrible. But, I was confused rather to run or not, and before it got to bite me, I ran faster than I ever have in my life. It was really. And, I wish I was as smart as Tony. I did panic...and I'm. By the way Carl, I love you silly puns. It makes are class better. We have to watch this daily, and most look foward to it. Everybody is Mrs. Stouts Journalism class says," Wow, his puns are awesome."

I don't believe the kid when he said that he hit the coyote i think that his dad might have scared it of or some thing.

    December 11, 2008 at 10:05 am |

That's pretty brave i probably would of got in the fetal position and screamed like a little girl.

I was in a situation like that when I was younger. When I took my dog out to go to the bath room there was a coyote in my back yard and my dog chased it right out of my yard I was freaked.

Thats really cool how that kid fought the coyote. That is very brave of him to do that and it seems pretty fun, (except for the getting bit part). And I like how he said peace out at the end, that kid is such a stud.

    December 11, 2008 at 10:08 am |
  27. Krista

I would be so scared. Wow that kid was brave to just stay there I would of started running like as fast as I could. But then again that probably would not be the right decision.

    December 11, 2008 at 10:08 am |
  28. Kailtyn T.

Wicked, I would of fought back at the coyote too, because it is usually for a coyote to attack someone.

I hope that kid is okay because that had to hart a lot. If that was me I would be very scared I would not know what to do.

  32. brady

That kid is very brave for facing a coyote. If a coyote would of bit me I would not let it get away. I would be going coyote hunting until I get the mean sucker.

    December 11, 2008 at 10:11 am |
  33. Alexander

I would have hit the coyote with my snowboard. I would have stayed calm and called for help. If I would've gotten bit, I would have hit him over the head with my snowboard again.

    December 11, 2008 at 10:11 am |
  34. Jordan

I don't have a story like that. But I would be freaked out if that ever happened to me. I would be screaming for help. I would try to stay clam but it would be really hard.

    December 11, 2008 at 10:11 am |
  35. LeAndra

If I was that kid I would of screamed or i would of ran for home and then tell my mom about it. but I think the kid did a good job with what he did to get the coyote away.

    December 11, 2008 at 10:12 am |
  36. Brittany

This kid stayed calm when the coyote attached him. That is something that would be so hard for me to do. But this kid thought about what was going on, and quickly thought of a way to keep the animal away. That is brave.

well..... my uncle, dad, and brother, and some other people were all out bear hunting when I was about six and there was a bear up in a tree. When it came down it charged at my uncle and got about three feet away from him and my dad shot it on the spot, my uncle basically wet his pants. It now proudly sits in our living room as a trophy.

I went on a trip to California in 5th grade and my friend and I thought there was a coyote outside our tent. We hid under our sleeping bags in the hot heat of the night for hours fearing that the coyotes might rip through the tent. It turned out to be two cats.

    December 11, 2008 at 10:42 am |
  39. Kailie

That is pretty scary, especially for a little kid.

When I went to Australia with my uncle, we decided it would be cool to go snorkeling on the reefs. And when we did we got to whiteness one of the coolest/scariest things I have ever seen. A bunch of sharks were feeding on the reef fish below us. That scared me to death, plus some of them were coming up to check me and him out... In this case, I'm glad I took marine biology last year (how to prevent shark attacks 101).

  46. *TRENIQUE*

This is crAzy, I would have got eaten lol, but hes a smart kiddo, kUdos for him. or i would have ran and then the coyote would have just ran after me, so the kid is smarter then me.

  47. megan

I don’t have any stories like the coyote story but that little boy is really smart! I would have panicked and definitely not been that smart because I would have been way too scared. He is like his won hero, something to be very proud about.

    December 11, 2008 at 12:20 pm |
  48. Brittani

I think that the boy did a very good job of fighting back so that he wouldn't get hurt but if I had the time I would have taken the snowboard off and started swinging it at him. but atleast he isn't hurt really bad but his mom did the right thing taking hin the hospital to see if the coyote had rabiees.

    December 11, 2008 at 12:22 pm |
  49. Kira

That would be really scary. One time there was a shark was swimming around me and my sister in Florida a few years ago. Luckily we got out of the water quickly enough before it attacked.

    December 11, 2008 at 12:24 pm |
  50. josh

i think the boy had alot of guts to fight back for a young age i would have never thought a boy that young would do that
    Way to go dude

    December 11, 2008 at 12:32 pm |
  51. Brianne

I think that was a good thing to do. The kid was being smart, and if he had not have tried to scare the coyote, he might have been seriously injured. I think parents should be paranoid because this is a serious issue. One of their kids got attacked by a coyote. They need to take serious immediate action.

    December 11, 2008 at 12:32 pm |
  52. Jessica

I've never been in an experience like that, due to the fact that I rarely go outside and there's not much wildlife that comes out when I am outside. But I think that that boy was very smart in not panicking because the coyote would have been able to sense his fear.

    December 11, 2008 at 12:32 pm |
  53. April

For such a little boy I can't believe he stayed so calm. :] But he did what he was suppose to in order to stay alive. I would have defiantly freaked out.

    December 11, 2008 at 12:33 pm |
  54. Anthony

i dont know what i would do in that situation... i would have to experience it. but for him only being nine i think he handled it very well

    December 11, 2008 at 12:34 pm |
  55. Matt

That would really suck. I hope that the kid didnt get any diseases from the coyot.

    December 11, 2008 at 12:34 pm |

I think that the young boy fighting off the coyote is very heroic and lucky for him that he reacted and didn’t try and run!

    December 11, 2008 at 12:34 pm |
  57. Courtney

I dont have any interesting stories but i think that Tony was very smart to use his snowboard as a barrier to keep the cayote away.

    December 11, 2008 at 12:34 pm |
  58. alexis

the boy is pretty smart for a 9 year old.
but i've gotten attacked by a moose before.
i lived in alaska about two years ago, and i was outside in the morning waiting for my bus, and i kept hearing all these little noises like someone breathing heavily and then right behind me a moose came up and ran right into me, i hit the ice and the moose kept running but half my face was scratched and bruised and i broke my arm.
it was the scarest moment of my whole entire life.

    December 11, 2008 at 12:35 pm |
  59. NICOLE

The boy was very brave, because if a coyote bothered me like that I wouldn’t know what to do. The coyote would probably beat me up.

  62. Sammie

I think he was doing what he thought would help protect himself from the coyote. And it was the right thing to do instead of running.

    December 11, 2008 at 12:36 pm |
  63. Nicole

I think it’s really cool that he was able to stay clam and fought off the coyote.

    December 11, 2008 at 12:36 pm |
  64. kylie

i think tony is stupid for snowboarding on a golf course, but i think that he was smart for not paniking when the cayote started to circle him. he should have taken off his snowboard & wacked him in the head

    December 11, 2008 at 12:37 pm |
  65. Shelby

this kid is smart because animals are more afraid of us than we are of them and he must not have been very scared to no panic like that. i probably wouldnt have thought of keeping the snowboard between myself and the coyote. not gonna lie. good job!

    December 11, 2008 at 12:37 pm |
  66. Alex

I think the kids got a good spirit and a brave heart to stand up against the coyote and not to panic.

One time me and my friend were at a lake, we asked my parents if we could go walk on the rocks and he said that we could. When we went there i looked between two rocks and i saw something move, i told him to step on the rock to see what it was, and when he did a copperhead popped out and started chasing us across the rocks. It scared me a lot and we arent goign to step on a rock with something under it again.

That child is super smart for calling for help. I would have probably scream my head of! I think all children should know the dangers of wild life aminals. they should be properly taught on how to respond when face to face with a wildlife aminal. luckly he knew how to react.

    December 11, 2008 at 5:07 pm |
  87. Kaitlin

I think it's pretty extrodinary that a nine-year-old was brave, let alone strong, enough to fight off a full grown coyote. I know that if I tried, I might not have been able to accomplish such an incredible feat.

    December 11, 2008 at 5:33 pm |

Honestly, this has nothing to do with the article, but I felt I needed to post it somewhere:

Who is your stylist? Because my friend and I are wondering where in the world you can find an overshirt/jacket thing as odd as the one you had on today. A shirt and tie works better. Just thought I'd give you a heads up on your fashion faux paux. Lotsa love! You have a great show. =D

  91. Bayan

tony is a brave boy. I liked how he handled the situation, he didnt panic and he kept the board between them.he acted so natural telling his story on the news, it was like he wasnt scared at all.i think i would have done the same, but i would have probably screamed!

    December 11, 2008 at 6:34 pm |

Wow, that was crazy. It's good that he did the right thing, he could've became kibble for the coyote had he not done that! Tony was very brave.

I was swimming once and I was trying to get in an innertube. I slipped and fell. My head hit the step in the pool, and I was knocked unconscious. My friend was scared and the life guards were'nt watching. I was under the water for a long time. Then i came up from the water and my head had a huge bump on the back. My friend pulled me out of the water and helped me. I am glad to have a good friend.

    December 13, 2008 at 9:16 pm |
  123. Lillie

Its odd that a cyotoe would act that way. They usually are very shy animals and would perfer to not be seen. I know that here in wyoming it is great sport to hunt them so they are hard to find. Tonys mother was right to get Tony checked because he could of been rabid.

    December 14, 2008 at 2:34 pm |

Well, i was out side helping my mom garden, i know boring right? So, all of a sudden my dog starts barking and we look over and my dog was being chased by a cyotoe! Then my dog turns around and HE started chasing the cyotoe! And then they started coming near me and my mom, then we see the cyotoe and he is literally two or three feet away from us! But soon enough my dog chased him off into the woods. So that was a fun day for me. I think . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Yes because if she works she should get paid...If Obama loses his job then they could end up homeless.

  128. Paris

I think the First Lady should get paid becasue if Michelle Obama was making all that money before by being an attorney she still should be able to make money too.

Well, I don't know if this counts, but one time I was feeding some geese, and I guess I got too close to one, and it started hissing and trying to hit me with its wings. I got scared and ran back to my house, where my Mom proceeded to tell me about how a goose's wing force can break a perosn's neck. I will never, EVER go near one that close again!!!!

  133. Cassaundra & Ryan

Cassaundra: being attacked by wild animals can be a very bad situation. People getting attacked by bears, lions, and even deer. A little boy to be attacked by a coyote sounds like the same situation as if a bear attacked a man. I'm glad the boy didn't get hurt and the coyote didn't get hurt either. There could've been alot of reasons that the coyote circled him also. Ryan says it's good that the boy didn't get hurt also.

  134. Aryanna

I think that if one of your kids got attack by a(n) wild animal you would of either moved or put the animal to sleep after you found it right well i would but nobody listens to me and yeah so thats a reason that i would do but nobody listens to me anymore............................................

    December 16, 2008 at 1:22 pm |

  142. Tiffany

That kid is really smart!!! Maybe we should read more books and gather information about animals-incase you met one.

    December 17, 2008 at 7:39 pm |
  143. Chloe

Thats pretty smart of the little boy. I probably would have spazzed and not have been calm enough to think and protect myself. I don't know how a nine year old would have thought to do that with the snowboard. That was very smart of him to do.

    December 18, 2008 at 9:18 am |
  144. Kaylee

I would be scared to death if that happend to me. I think anyone would. What that kid did though was smart and hes only 9 years old!! Hes younger than i am and I probably wouldnt even know what to do! Good think he did and that he is safe. Wasnt a parent watch him, hes seems to young to be left outside alone.

    December 18, 2008 at 10:51 am |
  145. Ryan

hey he did the right thing i've been in the same sitution exept i was hunting not snow boarding but my gun was out of reach after i fell out of a deer stand

  146. Charlotte

I got confronted by a turkey once, that looked like it was about to kill me! I live somewhere where there are a lot of trees around, and I always have to be careful where I play, in case, some animal comes out of no where. We've had everything. Bobcats, wolves, bears, turkeys, cayotes, and every other animal out there! It is so cool, when you get to see them from in side the house. They are cool animals, and a great experiance!

    December 18, 2008 at 4:15 pm |
  147. markida

    December 19, 2008 at 6:15 pm |
  150. Alex

I'm not a hippy/animal protection officer, so I would have taken off my snowboard and beat that thing. It may sound a bit too much but if a coyote was circling me, I would have attacked it.

    December 19, 2008 at 11:37 pm |
  151. James

Well i have a similar story. I was attacked by a wild dog lucky my dad was a yell away though.
