Ads in Video Games?
I knew there were billboards in the Burnout series, but I never really paid attention to them. I was too busy trying to wreck.
But the story in Friday's show made us wonder if you would even care if you saw a political advertisement in a video game. I mean, would you be any more interested in a candidate if you noticed an ad for one in a game you were playing? And do you even think games are a good place for political ads?

I really don't think it would be a good idea to show a political ad during a video game because the kids would be having too much fun to pay any attention to the ad, so maybe just stick with putting them on T.V.That seems to work just fine.

Why waste money paying to put ads in video games? The majority of people who play video games, play them to play the actual game, not to go around looking at billboards and advertisements. It's a waste of money if you ask me.
That wouldn't be the greatest idea. How many kids even pay attention to those ads? Politics and gaming don't go together at all! People would be focusing on the game and nothing else. They like to "get in the zone" and beat records, but when you intertwine politics with it, it destroys the whole mood... The candidates' best bet are television ads.
I think that would be a good idea, if the people who played the games actually cared, or if they were old enough to vote.
I play video games to ESCAPE the circus that is the 2008 election... not get drug deeper into it. It's bad enough to have supporters on BOTH sides try to drag me in to thier side and call me names when I don't agree with them... but now to have them try to get me to vote by putting adds in video games.... that's just plain tacky. And the fact that the games with ads are only being released in battle ground states makes the canidates, in my opinion, seem desperate and almost socialitic... and makes me wonder how close the race really is. I mean, why even bother putting an ad in a game unless your a sponser? It makes me want to vote LESS for the canidate because, really... now it feels like they are invading the one escape I have.
All in all, I don't think it'll make much of a differance, and risky. The last thing most people want is to find that thier escape from real-life hardships and general stress has been invaded to pressure them even more. I for one feel it's a slap in the face and hope that the gamers make a stand and say "stay outta our world." Just my two cents. 🙂
It's really cool but I don't think it’s a good idea. Obama is wasting his money on something that nobody would want to see while playing a video game.

I think this a great strategy to put the president candidates in these games because a lot of people do play video games. But put them on the sides of the cars and make it a hard car to earn, or put it on a huge stadium's ceilings. That would help me vote!
I think that it's kind of funny. I don't think that it really mater's though, because I don't think people will notice.
i think obama has a different way of thinking, and thats what we need for our country. i know i would never think to put an add in a video game. i think its a very creative way to say: vote for obama!

I think putting campaign ads on video games isn't an affective tool to convince people to vote, because they would be too distracted by the video game to pay attention to the ad!

I also think that it is REALLY low when they have to put them in video games to get people's attention, which I guess that they don't watch T.V. alot to see what's going on in the Presidential Debate and stuff. Well I think ads in video games would not be a good idea because most people that play them are not looking for ads in the middle of the game. So to me he is wasting his money.
Putting your picture in a video game,and saying vote for Obama is a very good idea I think that puting Obama and Maccane in a race car to see who would win.

I don't agree with wasting money on putting your face in a video game just to help you win an election, because by now most people have decited who they want to win. Just because someone sees his face in a game dosent mean there going to vote for him. I know it wouldnt change my mind, so why dont you spend money one things that will help the America, because Id rather spend money on the troops in Iraq so they can come home and not so people will see your face one some dumb bilbord. that how you win actually do something show you can be a good President that you'll go the distance thats what we need.
I think that is a good idea to put the ads in video games. A lot of people get video games so if they put it in a high selling games they should get a lot of people to see it.

I think that showing a political add during a video game is a good idea because when someone is playing a game and they seen that they would want to go and vote if they are old enough and it looks kool in the in video games.

I don't think that using video games as an advertisement strategy is a good idea because i think that they would not be interested in the ads as much as beating the game.
I think presidential ads shouldn't be in the video games; or any politics for that matter(unless it's part of the plot). Video games are essentially a place to escape reality if you put these kinds of things into video games, you're destroying that purpose. Put it this way would you like to have an add on a video game about your credit card debt; or a game where the only purpose is to be called by telemarketers? I don't think so. But, that's just my opinion.

i think it is a very good idea because so many people play. i play alot of video games and whenever i play online.. i play with alot of older people. you dont know how many fathers and mothers actually play. just because there there older doesent mean they dont play.

I think it's a good campaign idea for both candidates. Thousands of americans play video games, and whether or not the human eye catches it, the subconscious sees it and records it. People might not realize it, but in truth, our political candidates running for office are trying every means necessary to influence the young people, and their votes.

I think that it isn't a good idea to put the ads in video games. It seems that the candidates are really desperate to get more voters.
I think that gaming people is a bad group to advertise on because my opinion is that most people who play video games are unable to vote yet because of their age.
It's kind of like subliminal messaging. You're focused on the game but your mind sees it. I think it might it might be helpful because there are tons of 18 and older gamers.
I think that it is a complete waste of time to put adds in video games. first of all, nobody is going to see them because you're either going to be going to fast, in the case of burnout, or you are going to be to busy playing in the case of the basketball. And anyways, most people who would play these games would be kids who are too young to vote. even though I am rooting for Obama, I still think he could come up with much better things to do with Campaign money.

About the advertisements in games. They are in a lot of games other then burnout paradise. They are in basically any game with billboards. But unless you are an adult and are not paying much attention to playing the game, you wouldn't notice any of the advertisements.
I thought the driver for the game was intense. I think that they should put the candidates in the cars. If they did I would definitely crash and destroy the car they were in.

I think it is very clever by Obama, but it is innapropriate because these kids are between 13-16 and the posibiltiy of them regestring phony ballots will likley increase. Don't we get enough of political ads on TV and newspapers? They should leave their campaigns out of video games, considering thats the only place we seem to be able to get away from the ads! And most of the people playing are under 18, so how can that possibly help them anyway?
I think that putting signs (only about Barack Obama, might I add) in a video game is ridiculus! It just shows how desprate Obama really is, and wants to reach out to all people. I don't really like it at all. Why can't Obama just concentrate ion the COUNTRY for a change? His campaign is all about change, yet he will not actually change anything!
Our class is split. Some feel that Obama's money is wasted on the video games. Others think that it has resulted in a lot of publicity on the news, making it worthwhile.

I don't think that having ads in video games will get any more or less people vote. When you are driving a car in a video game you don't usually look up to see what is on the billboards.
I don't know if it would help the canidates, but I do know that I wouldn't really care about the ads since I'd be to interested playing the game.
I think it's a creative idea, but I am not sure that it will bring in many votes. Not many people will pay attention to the things in the background. But I give Obama props for being creative! =-)

If I'm playing Burnout Paradise I think it would catch my attention and would make me laugh just enough to show my parents. I think its an ingenious way to target a new generation
I played video games not very much. But anyway when I play video games I never noticed the ads on the game. I think many people won't pay attention to the ads like me. We play games for fun not for observing or something. Sometimes we lose even if we concentrated on games. So why do we pay attention to the ads??? I think making advertisement on video games are not a good idea.
I'm not sure if people would notice the ads if they are busy playing the actual game. I think it's a good try but if you're going to put the ads in the games at all try more popular games that way you have a better chance of people noticing.
When they put presidential ads in video games they're waisting their time, People are going to be to lazy to get up and vote so why try?

Since kids, that can't vote, usually play the video games I don't think that having political ads in them will really matter. Just having an ad in a video game isn't going to change a voters decision. It's just like any other ad on TV or an actual billboard. There is no use in wasting money on ads in games that aren't even going to get noticed.
Certainly! Because if I find the ads shown in the game, I will be really excited! It's like we are playing in the real world. That sounds pretty interesting to me. Moreover, I think if I do see the senator Obama on the billboard in the game, I would think "that's funny" and want to support him for doing this special campaign. I dont think its a good idea to put ads in video games. On the Friday episode w/ the basket ball one they would be too busy watching who has the ball and on the Burnout game they would be to busy doing spins w/ there car then to pay attention to the bill boards. There might be 'some' gamers who would look at the ads and maybe vote if there not too lazy to drive to the nearest polling place(or walk). If there was some games who would vote I dont think it would make a difference in the Electoral College.

I don't think they should do that. It would be a wast of time for the creators of the game to advertise something like that in a videogame. When people play a videogame, they play it for just that. They will be too interrested in getting to the next level, that they won't take the time to look for something like that. Besides if you put it in the game and it's current at that time, then two maybe three years down the road when they choose to play the videogame again, then that political advertisement would be outdated anyways. If you do, it would be more of an unique easter egg than an adervertisment.
yes and no. for one, you don't know how old the person is that's playing. and two, if its only on billboards and stuff, who's going to slow down and read it?
i think that its different which is always good but if i was actually playing i would never notice i would be wrecking to much and getting to mad to even be looking at anything other than the road but i think its pretty cool that a president would even think about putting an ad in a video game who is kinda old............
Wow,it's really creative to think of that! But I think it's no use. Videogame players won't just go and vote someone because they see the ads in their games.(that is, if they do notice them)

I think that it isn't a good idea because then what if the parent or person who's playing is voting for the other person, and not the one in the ad! Uh-Oh unless the player gets to choose which candidate goes in the ad of the game there playing.
I think that the ads in video games are ridiculous. I mean, i LOVE video games, you could even say im a video game addict :D. Ok im not an addict, but i like them a lot. Anyways, i think that its almost hypocritocal (spelled wrong im guessing) that they discuss how we can save money, then they go and spend probably millions of dollars on 20 megabytes of memory on a game to show a small sign, that we probably wont see, in the middle of a virtual town. When we play video games, we dont wanna think about candidates, we just wanna shoot things (or whatever you do in your games). Its absolutely a waste of time and money.
P.S. – I'm guessing that most gamers are younger then 18, not saying all gamers are, ill prob play video games when im older then 18, but a lot of the crowd that virtual game advertising is trying to attract either dont care about the election, or simply cant vote.

I think it's like subliminal messaging. If they are showing pics of just one candidate in the video games, you won't concously see it, but your subconcios will pick it up and then you'll side with that candidate. I think it's wrong.

Politics has gone too far with these advertisements in video games. If I know videogamers, They arn't usually looking to do anything but play their games! Plus, videogamers are usually teens and kids and adults that don't have much to do in their life. I don't think this is the type of audience presidental canidates want to appeal to.

I believe that putting ads in video games is a great way to get your name out to the younger crowd. As an avid Madden player I would have the candidate's name embedded in the back of my brain. Nearly all guys that I know ranging from the football team to a few young adults all play madden religously.
if i saw an ad for a Presidential campaign and i had not registered to vote then it would remind me that HEY i need to go register.
I don't think that it will add to many voters, and in the game they showed it was very hard to see. But who knows? Video games could be the next frontier in presidential candidates. If people can get influenced by violence in video games, why not politcal views?
I think putting ads in video games is a waste. When I'm playing video games, I'm trying to beat the level. The only reason someone would notice is if they can't pass a certain level and end up go through the map slowy trying to find something. Another thing is people who mostly play video games on a daily bases are younger then 18. Anyone older seem to play every once in a while. so if the ads do have an impact, then its a microscopic one.

I think they should advertise in better games like madden 09. The only people that play burnout paradise are little kids. Madden is a real game, plus older people play madden
Yeah it’s a great idea because of all the people that play video games but I think it would have been better if they advertised all the candidates for the presidency.
its great to find anyway possible to get people to vote. it shows what type of campaign the candidates are running. i think its a good chance to get kids or whoever plays video games to check out whats on the billboards.
I think that putting ads in video games is smart but might show that they are desperate and afraid that their opponent is farther ahead. It is definitely smart to put that into the video games but quite honestly, I don't think that it is going to make people vote for that person. It will probably just make them think that its funny and be more of a joke then it is an advertisement.

I think that putting advertisements in video games is a waste of money and that people don’t really notice them. If I saw a bunch of advertisements for voting on one certain president, I think that it would change my mind about who I wanted to vote for. If the advertisements came often it would get quit annoying and I would want to change my vote.

We already get enough ads about video games, we don't need them IN the video games. Plus, we see too many political ads on TV anyways. Can't we just break away from that when we turn on our video games?

I think posting political ads in a video game is abusing what the concept of video games was based on. Pure mindless fun. Not many people are going to play Halo 3 or COD4 and say,” look Obama supports me killing aliens” that is not going to appeal to kids.
I think that ads in videogames are really low down, especially on OH-BAMA’s side. The only political ad in a videogame I know of is OH-BAMA’s ad in the Burnout Paradise game online. When the OH-BAMA campaign goes as far as to put in an ad on a videogame, they are going too far. I have yet to hear or see a John McCain ad in a videogame, and I do not think that he is going to go that low to get a vote.
I think that it is a good idea for candidates to put ads on video games. Most people I know play video games, so they would probably receive some votes from this. I wouldn’t vote for someone just because they did that though. I would vote for a candidate based on what they were going to do, not if they had the money to advertise on a video game or not.
I think it is a good idea because it is letting people know what is going on in this world who the leader is going to be.
i do not think that it is a good idea to put political ads in video games. besides most people that play video games are to young. also it will not help cause no one will see it and its only a picture of the person.
I really only play Rock Band, video games are kinda boring to me..but I'd be pretty annoyed if I saw an advertisement for a presidential candidate in Rock Band. Seriously, it's everywhere else, the last place I want to see it is Rock Band. x.x

Personally this has never happened to me, but that would be pretty low to advertise your campaign in video game commercials. "EA SPORTS, challenge everything! 'McCain likes to be challenged, thats why you should vote for him' "Come on. Besides most "gamers" probably aren't old enough to vote.

Honestly, not many voters play video games, and if that's pretty much all they do " Get off your but and get a job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Also, I have burnout and untill I watched your news cast I hadn't even noticed the ads.
Personally, I don't think that's a good idea, because A. You're wasting like a million dollars on advertisements a day and B. People who play video games really don't care about the backgrounds and stuff. I think that Obama and McCain should stop with the video games and stick with the buttons, the shirts, those things.
Ok, this is a waste of money. Kids who play video games don't look at the backgrounds, they just want to get to the final level of the game! It doesn't really matter to those people about the backgrounds(like me). If i was running, i wouldn't waste my money on video games just something else that people look at daily, like the newspaper. NOT new released video games.
It wouldent mater that much because the kids play the video games usually and they might notice but they can't vote plus the parents barely watch so its no use and anyways by the time the kids that play can vote the people running for presidential office the canedates can't run again.
I think that in game advertisements are just plain lame. First of all, most of the games that they advertise in are for people too young to vote. It's just another way to waste money when we need it the most.

What about after the election? It would seem wierd playing video games, and seeing an ad for the defeated candidate. In a sense, I don't think it is realized that the world goes on after the election.
I think it is ridiculous. It comes to show that Obama has to much money to know what to do with. I think he should give some of the money to the government.
