Finally...Good News on the Economy

Market losses have become so commonplace recently that it's actually a major headline when things go up.  Believe me, it's a refreshing change on Tuesday's show to be telling you about good news for the U.S. economy.

Of course, that doesn't mean it's going to last.  Wednesday, I may be bringing you more gloomy news from Wall Street.  But the silver lining is this:  If the market hasn't bottomed out yet, as some think it has, it will eventually.  And after that happens, you'll slowly but surely see a turnaround in reports about stocks, credit, home sales, and businesses from the streets of New York to the streets of your neighborhood.

As Nancy Pelosi suggest a second financial suport plan of +/- $1 trillion USD is not out of the question, we need to stand behind our American investors, banks and finacial institutions if we (Americans) are to continue being the number one economic global leader, timing is everything during this financial crises.

The country has too much in the stock market they need to have a plan so if the stock market crashes the country won’t go under maybe the new president will realize this and fix it

When it comes to the economy I’m a conservative, but when the election comes around and our president starts to act on the economy that’s when I will worry. I’m just a 14 year old kid, there is not much I can do about this so I will let the men on Wall Street do their thing and help fix this mess.

It is good to know that the economy is getting better. It would be great if the economy was fixed very quickly. It will take a while, but the sooner the better. Hopefully we all vote on a president that will help in this crisis.

I haven't watched anything about stocks and that stuff lately, but I have seen the impact it's having on gas prices. About a week ago gas had to be at least $3.80, now it's actually under $3! That's amazing, the lowest I've seen it so far has been $2.97.

The economy went up big on tuesday but we won't know if it will last. I think it is just the bailout money getting in. After it is gone it will all go back to how it was just weeks a go, or at least hope so.

This is important because if the economy was to go down more it would be like in 1929.If that happened we would go hungy. That would be bad for us.

It's good that stocks are now increasing and it is surprising that Dow has had the largest increase ever. It is amazing that in one day, it increased by so much money. I was worried that there might be another Great Depression. I hope stocks keep increasing as time goes on.

I think that it is good that our stocks ou rgoing back up because ot os making gas prices gp down so i can now afford to fill up my tank.

I'm fairly pessimistic about this whole thing. Just because the economy has gone up in one day doesn't necessarily mean things are going to get better. For all we know, the stock market could've just been experiencing a massive dead cat bounce. I hope it gets better instead of worse, but I don't have much faith that it will.

im glad that the economy is finally getting a little better from the past eight days. i hope it helps out the prices with costs of gas and food so i can live cheaper and start saving more money.

I hope the economy is getting better. The situatuion is just getting worse and worse, and if something doesn't happen soon, we may go into another Great Depresssion.

Its great that the economy went up recently, but i dont think anyone should get to excited. Its been so low for so long. I just dont see this large raise lasting for long.

Even though the Economy issue never really affected my family it was still on everyone’s shoulders to save because you never knew what could happen. The economy going up yesterday may not last very long but were out of the rut we were in and it’s nice to hear for once. Hopefully we’ll keep it up because it put a lot of stress on people, and in some way had affected everyone. I just hope the cat bounce just doesn’t happen tremendously this time.

Yeah it's good to see stocks raise but that is just for now. For all we know we could be heading into another great depression and it all started when Bush was elected. That was the biggest mistake we could of made even if he is finally trying to do the right thing. I believe that if Obama is elected we will turn our economy around and go back to living our lives

This news of the economy making a strong recovery, is great news. This may help some people to keep believeing in the stock market, or to become a believer again. This also could get us out of the hole that we are already in economically. This is great news.

The likelyhood of the stock market staying this high is very low. This is a chance for people who have invested in the stock market to get out, so we can avoid another, even greater economic depression.

I think the economy will get better sooner then we think. I think that most of it will depend on who is elected president and what kind of job they do. If they mess up then we may be in trouble, but I'm not really going to worry about it until then.

    October 14, 2008 at 2:41 pm |
  38. Brett

The economy will not recover, the world banks are pushing for a global economy (like the North American Union). Because that would make the super rich bankers even richer and give them even more power... Obama or McCaine, things will still be bad... Invest it tangible things, like gold and silver... Not stocks.

Its funny how a saying that parents use all the time "everything must get worse to get better" is used in economy. Also another saying "everything must get ugly to become pretty" is also applied. I think its crazy how this has been crazy terrible then all of a sudden a small increase and everyone goes crazy but soon it will go down once again.

Geez it's about time! We need some good news. But we shouldn't celebrate yet... we still have a long way to go.

    October 14, 2008 at 9:02 pm |

I'm taking this special class on the economics and my teacher described what happened and basically the banks made loans that they new that the people couldn't afford, so when the person didn't pay it off they lost their house but the banks might not sell the foreclosed house so then they just lost a lot of money. So, when the next person went to take a loan they didn't have enough money so then they couldn't give out loans so then people couldn't buy new houses or new cars and all that other stuff. So the main thing is that it is a vicious circle and a chain reaction that starts with banks not lending money to people. There I said it without writing a novel!

This is really good news. I'm happy, believe me 🙂

The recent climb on Wall Street is no doubt a good thing, but it will inevitably fall again if we don't come up with a better or more plans to solve this economic crisis.

While the economy will recover, as it always does, I can't help but question the belief that we can really raise or expedite the bottom of the market simply by throwing money at the problem. I'm beginning to subscribe to those on wall street who say that we really need a purge to clear out the marketplace and restore confidence.

This is good news but that doesnt mean that it will continue to stay like that, we cant assume that things will get better right away and continue to spend like we do now, we have to change our spending habbits in the chance that something will happen.

I hope that people realize that a lot of this upturn happened because of European nations flooding money into liquidity for their banks, something that the Henry Paulson did not want to do at first but has started to consider it now. But now, the stock market has fallen again, like many analysts predicted, and we are almost back to square one.

I think that the bailout plan was just a quick fix to a long term problem. This week alone we have seen an increase in the stock market along with second biggest drop in history, averaging 733.08 points !!!! It will take a great deal to get our nation's economy back in shape and I believe that it will take a lot of people to work this mess out. This will undoubtedly be a challenge for next president.

I think it will be hard to get out of this hole we dug. Our feeble attemps to climb out of the hole isn't working. Everyone is just faling back down. We not only have to get a ladder to get out of this hole, we also have to fill the hole in so it dosn't happen again. Americans shouldn't get their hopes up too much. Who knows. We could fall even deeper.

    October 16, 2008 at 8:28 pm |

I think that we just have to keep our heads up about the economy because if we get really depressed and scared about it, it could lead the nation into a scary depression as well.

  85. matthew

I believe the economy is in worse shape than we know. And those who think that it has bottomed out are confusing wishful thinking with the facts. the economy wont get better until the people gain back the trust they had in it. What i mean by this is that the economy isn't going to go up until people start spending again. because it is people spending and investing money that makes our markets go up. But if we are going to fix this GLOBAL problem, we need a GLOBAL effort. And i am afraid that if this effort doesn't start very soon it will be my generation and my kids generation that will be the victims.

I'm glad that there is good news about the economy. I worry about the depression, what with humans struggling to pay their taxes and having to feast down on innocent animals and people. Yet this good news won't last long.

  93. Alex

This is just like The Great Depression all over again. One minute the economey is on the top of the world and the next it's in the Underworld. You people shouldn't be getting your hopes up about it going up because it's just going to fall again.

    October 25, 2008 at 11:46 pm |
  94. Meredith

I think that people need to shape up and act like the economic suffering isn't just effecting the rest of the world or is just a rumor. They need to understand that it may and probably will somehow effect them, and they need to be prepared for it. They could lose their jobs, have to pay more than expected for everyday needs, or other simple day-to-day items. People need to pay attention and prepare themselves for the near future.

I have to sya that I agree; if the economy hasn't fallen through yet, it will VERY soon. I predict that the economy will fall apart by the end of the year or the begining of the next year. This next year or two is going to be very rough. In my opinion we might be looking at the next depression. But then again, that's just my opinion. Don't get affended anyone, and if you agree thank-you and thats great.

As the economy collapses, you have to wonder how it happened. First the housing market sank, then people defaulted on their home loans, then the banks reaped the downfall and they were then stuck with the houses as they stopped loaning money. Without the loans from the bank, small businesses closes down and huge businesses had to ask for the government’s aid. Car dealerships are closing because they couldn’t sell cars. Companies downsized as they started firing workers, now one in ten people are out of work and jobs. This is all a strain on the government to provide for them with unemployment, food stamps, and welfare; so then, that all equals into less tax dollars. And the states are going to be billions of dollars in debt.

Congress passed a bill that allowed $700 billion dollars to be given to companies such as the Insurance AIG companies, banking, car makers, mortgage which made up to $335 billion from the $700 billion money from the bill. And I have to ask you, what truly started everything? It was President Clinton’s fault that all this started, I understand him wanting to help poor people get loans to buy houses but he should have known why it was so hard to get a loan in the first place, seeing as he was the president and all.

Now, how can we resolve this? I think that if you give money to the people then it would help spending and would get everything started again. And the banks should start loaning money again, this would all help the economy start up again as well. But instead, the government chooses not to. Why? Because the government does not want to give people the money, but whatever happened to “the government is the people”? You might say to my writings that you do get money, which are stimulus packages, but that isn’t a lot of money at all and it is not enough to get the economy going. We have as much right as the other companies to receive money like they do if we think if would help the economy or if we really need it. What did our ancestors fight for if the government refuses to see that the people is the government and have rights as much as anyone else?
