Cheerleading Dress Code Controversy

Y'all usually side with the students on stories like this, and I don't blame you:  At a lot of high schools, cheerleaders wear their shirts and skirts to class on the same day that the football players wear their jerseys.

Now guys don't usually wear football pants to class - just the jerseys.  So there's no risk of any dress code violation there.  And it's important to point out that, at the Ohio schools mentioned in Tuesday's show, the cheerleaders are still allowed to wear their skirts - but only at games and assemblies.  So no more uniforms during class hours, unless they're worn over long shorts and T-shirts.

So I guess it comes down to how important you think it is for cheerleaders to be able to wear their uniforms in class.

I like them I think that they need to be shorter. Why would they make them pay for them then not let them wear them.

well, that makes sense. If it's in violation of the school dress code, then don't wear it!!

Schools should have dress codes, but they should not be so extreme.
For instance, at my middle school, our shorts have to be down to our knees. Teachers and administrIn general, do you think that schools should have dress codes? State your rationale.aters say that it will distract us from learning if we wear short-shorts, and strapless shirts. If the shirts aren't really low cut or if our shorts arent too short there won't really be a problem.

The cheerleaders skirts are to long because girls should be able to show off what they got.

Cheer Leading is like any performance activity-keep the dress at the performance only. If that can't be done and the cheer leaders won't comply wit the dress code then its time to drop Cheerleading from the schools.

This is news??? Well, that is first of all funny and ridiculous! It is the schools choice to rethink their dress code policy and I don't have a major problem with a dress code (Rory Gilmore made it work 😀 ). Although if it's not ok in school, it shouldn't be ok at school functions either. Modest is cool and should be required in school! Girls are naive to think guys are not distracted by tight, short or revealing clothing.

I think it shouldn't matter how short the skirts are because like the parents sayed THEY PAID for them.

So let me get this straight, the parents pay the school to give their daughters cheerleading uniforms. The school creates the uniform for the cheerleaders, then they say that the uniforms break the dress code? That insane. They're only trying to show school spirit and enthusiasm. This rule is RIDICULOUS. And since when did public high schools have a dress code anyway? The school has probably allowed worse...

I think shcools are too harsh with dress codes. My school short have to be at the knees, we cant wear hoodies, no tank tops, no shoes without socks. Basically, all the only rule left is uniforms. I dont agree with uniforms. Anyway, cheerleaders should be able to wear there skirts to class.

I believe that the girls can handle themselves, but what about the boys behavior and reactions to the short skirts. I think this for there protection.

I understand that it is against the dress code. The video says that the parents picked the skirt ,but it should not have been approved by the school if it violates any rules. So, if it has already been approved it should be aloud to be worn at school. Even at Carson, my school, cheerleaders wear the same type of skirt and it is allowed during school hours and in classes all by itself.

i think the teachers are wrong but right, reason there wrong is because the parents already bought the dresses and that its expressing school spirit. but there also right cause people might take attention from there school work and look at the cheerleaders. i think the school suprintendent or the school board should refund the payment and add a bonus for putting up with this change right in the middle of the school year, and they should get a new dress without charge. but what i think is that they should keep the dresses, if the kids wana look thats there own fault for taking the time to look at the cheerleaders. but it wont be all year, just during games and pep rallys.

I think it doesn't really matter because the point in being in school is to study. Teachers shouldn't care about the student's clothes unless it distracts them from their school work 🙂

i think their doing the right thing because why let the cheerleaders parade around in their short uniforms when everybody elses have to be finger tip lenght i think they should wear a sweat out fit at school and longer uniforms at games thats just my opion

My daughter cheers at the school involved. This has been a tradition for YEARS. We have some new employees in the district, perhaps they're not used to working with such great students. These are good girls, they're honor students, they're good girls. This is a new policy and no notice was given prior to the implementation of this policy. I disagree totally with this decision.

they should be aloud to wear them to rallys etc. but not in school un less they are 1 to 1 1/2 inches longer.!!!. because if u let them the boys will get distracted and try to look up anyway they can so unless they have shorts or they're longer!!so if u ask me shorts yes no shorts NO NO NO!!!!

    August 27, 2008 at 4:36 pm |
  20. chloe

also if they do look up the skirts the girl will blame them when it's their skirts!!! and the teachers will think the boys are lying when they're not really lying at all. let them be longer or take them AWAY!!!!! and also let them only wear them to only games, rallys etc. not just to show off like lil' miss im prettier or im miss popular or also like hi im lil' missim a cheerleader and ur not so be longer or be gone!!!:):(:):(

If the skirts/shorts are against dress code why do the make them part of the uniform? I honestly dont think having shorts on is distracting from your education. If anything the guys making remarks should be called on for verbal sexual harassment. What about the people with long arms? On hot days they still can't wear shorts.

I'd say that they should have made the uniforms abide by the dresscode in the first place.
If they're going to outlaw students from wearing them during the day, why have made them like that in the first place? I'm sure the cheerleaders are very happy with their positions and would like to be able to wear their outfits at more than just after school things, because everyone wants to be able to say: "Hey, I'm a/in *insert after-school club/extra curricular activity/sport here*."
Perhaps if they wear shorts underneath them during the school day, I'd say the skirts are just fine. If boys OR the cheerleaders act irresponsibly, punish them, not the cheerleaders as a whole.

I understand why the school would not want their cheerlearders to wear their cheerleading skirts, but didn't they make them for them to wear and show school spirit? Plus didn't the parents pay for them? I would change the dress code the following year when they could make the outfits appropriate because i think that the parents would be less angry if they bought outfits from the school that their children could wear.

My cousin is a cheerleader and their school chose the uniforms they wore and the skirts are like an inch shorter. they just wear them on game day and the teachers actually sent out reminders to all the cheerleaders and football players telling them to wear them. i went to her school for a day and they have strict rules there so i dont think its a problem.

I have two sides to this:

First off, If the uniforms are appropiate enough to represent their school at sporting events, then they should be appropiate enough for the classroom. And if the uniforms are distracting to other students, then those students should be held responsible for letting themselves be distracted. These girls are cheerleaders. Why shouldn't they be able to wear their uniforms?

Secondly, however, schools insist that all students are equal and shouldn't recieve special treatment just because they on a sports team, debate team, etc. Therefore, if the students who aren't on a team have to adhere to a dress code during the school day, then the cheerleaders should be expected to as well.

I think that it is just a cheer leading out fit. The staff designed the uniforms so they should have made it they way they wanted it. the parents wouldn't care they paid for one out fit they don't need to pay for another one.

why should it matter what the cheerleaders where during game they they wear thered unforms to show school spirit and to surport the school and there team the reaason why they are short and fitted is because the need it to do tumbling and kicks and jumps so why should it change.

If the cheerleaders had already bought the uniforms just for cheerleading..they should be able to wear them on game days..the football players get to wear their jerseys on game day so whay can't the girls wear there uniforms? It don't make sense if you see it from a teen's eye view.

    Cheerleading Dresscode Controversy:

I think that cheerleaders should be able to wear their uniforms in class because it is a privilage to be a cheerleader, why not show it off?
I mean the uniforms are made to be able to tumble and do kicks and jumps so they cant be that out of dresscode. They are also made to show school spirit, so why cant they were them? Also, the football players wear their jerseys and all there doing is show school spirit. If they dont want them wearing them to school then why did the make them that way in the first place? If you dont want your school out of dresscode, then dont make any of the school uniforms out of dresscode. Its the people who chose thems fault. Oh, and doesent the school have to approve the uniforms before the school buys them? I just dont think its fair to the cheerleaders.

School should do this : Have appropriate uniforms during Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, and let kids wear what they want on Wednesdays. And those uniforms should be under your knees and NOT too tight or small. And cheerleading uniformds shouldn't be shorter, they already are too short. Why do cheerleaders NEED mini skirts? I think that would distract the players.

    September 4, 2008 at 6:57 am |
  37. Tiffany

And think about this : Boys care much more important things on your inside than on your outside! Suppose a girl wear a mini skirt and reavealing clothes but is very moody. Would the guy look over her moodyness and like her? Probably not. But if a girl that is wearing appropriate clothes and is very kind, the guy will probably like her much more. Remember : Looks don't count, your inside counts!

At my country almost EVERY SCHOOL have school dress codes! There are soo much benefits of them! 1. You don't have to take time choosing what to wear. 2. It's very appropriate and not to small, tight, or revealing. 3. If you saw someone in your school, you can recognized that person. I LIKE SCHOOL DRESSCODES. (Even if I'm homeschooled now. ;))

I agree with you peeps because cheerleading uniforms are disgusting. I think they are too short for them to wear to school. I also think its unfair to the other girls that aren't cheerleaders that have to follow the schools dress code on skirt length.

If the school has a dress code, then the uniforms should be dress code appropriate. It is not that hard to find cheerleading uniforms that agree to school dress codes. I do agree the cheerleaders should get to wear their full uniform on game days, and I think that the cheerleading sponser should have made sure the uniforms would be appropriate for the dress code before they were ordered. Why don't the cheerleaders try doing something new, like instead of wearing their cheer shells (tops) with their skirts, wear their shells (tops) with their warm-up pants. Something as simple as that could very well please the school administration. They also have to remember, not only are the cheerleaders representing themselves, but they are representing their school, and they don't want to represent badly by wearing to short of skirts.

cheer leaders are not breaking the dress code the school picks the length of the uniforms so if they do not like it they should get new ones

this is my second year on varsity cheer and the skirts are really not that bad. we have bloomers that we wear underneath our skirts that are the same color as the skirt. people are always saying that our skirts are short but there is a reason for it. in order to do the stunts and tumbling that we do, it is necessary to have a skirt as short as it is. also, our coach makes sure that we conduct ourselves in a manner that makes the school look good; in other words we are not allowed to deliberately bend over and show our butt off. the football players are not distracted either because if they turn around and look at us during a game they will get in trouble.

They should be allowed to wear their skirts.
If their not allowed to wear them then why do they issue the uniforms in the first place?

If they have a problem with them wearing their skirts then they can just make them wear soffes underneath the skirt and roll them up so you cant see them but you know that they are there.

Their making it a bigger deal than it needs to be.

I really dont like cheerleaders at all! But hey if they wanna be a little skimpy at school then let them! I mean just as long as its not showing stuff! Then again i dont think they should be able to wear them around school because the uniforms are made to perform in not to just wear them around. You dont see the basketball players wearing their uniforms!
