Virginia Tech Shooting Anniversary

When we covered the Virginia Tech shooting last year, one aspect of the story I found so amazing was some students' responses to it.  A junior at the time said she "could never imagine leaving"; she felt that she owed it "to the students to go back and just finish the year out."  And a freshman talked about how she wanted to finish her classes to have closure.

Their stories reflected marks of resilience, our Word to the Wise for that day.  And one year later, you could see it rising in the next group of Virginia Tech students, embodied in the decision of Haley Freking to attend the university despite what it went through.  Whether you'd describe this as simple determination or, in the words of CNN reporter Kate Bolduan, "the fighting Hokie spirit," you've got to admit that it's remarkable.

I think it's truly amazing that the student body showed so much support and strength as a whole. Thank you for posting this story, it gives faith and spirit back to that school, as well as the rest of the nation.

I think it is very good that now it has been a long time since the shooting. People are starting to trust each other agian and things are getting back to normal. I hate to think how all of those people have a mind where killing people is okay. That just sickens me.

Time does fly. These shootings make me dissapointed at how vulnerable our schools can be to these kinds of things, especially my school. It has no security system at all whatsoever. I find myself wondering when something such as this could possibly happen. I brought this topic up to some classmates and they were assured that "this kind of thing could never happen here!" This made me shake my head.

I believe this incident should be used to improve the security in school and colleges. In one hand the students want to be free and not have so much security because they do not like it. However in the other hand the security is needed and a lot because in the last 10 years the have been more than a 100 school violence incidents. There has been school violence in kinder garden, middle school, high school and college. The schools havent done anything yet to avoid that this happens again. I believe that after all this deaths the security must improve so this does not happen again.

For my comment I think the schools should put in metal detecdors to make sure nobody is bringing in weapons.

It really doesn't seem like its been a whole year since the shooting. I don't know how they continued going to school there in the same hallways they witnessed that incedent.

The economy has had a substantial decrease with intrest and the stock market. Recently President Bush approved a stimulus package that is supposed to give the economy a bust so that we dont end up going into a recession. With the rising cost of of gas and food many
people dont have the money to spend on luxury things like cars and the more expensive that people would like to have but cant, because the of the rising cost of things that a need for everyday life.

When this happened, i first heard about if from my brother. And when i looked into more i found that things like this need to STOP happening. VT was an act of someone being stupid. This guy shouldn't have even got the permission to own this gun. Now look what happened. But those kids and that professor have been in my memories and prayers since that violent day. God bless them and their families for such a horrible and terrible loss that could've been prevented.
