Naming Names

ALT TEXT

Ex-Sen. George Mitchell, left, was hired by MLB Commissioner Bud Selig, right, to probe steroid use.

In Friday's story about the Mitchell report on performance enhancing drug use in baseball, you hear the names of several Major League All-Stars who are allegedly linked to steroids. I really don't like publishing these names, after all, they haven't been convicted of anything, they're just listed in the report. And anyway, c‘mon! These guys are supposed to be our heroes. The Boys of Summer who every baseball fan lives and dies with each season. Why do we have to drag them through the mud like this?

Well, here's one reason: Consider the number of young people who are reportedly using HGH or steroids to get ahead in their sport. Maybe this report will make a high school player stop and think before doing it. Of course, I can see a young athlete asking, "If they do it, why shouldn't I?" but I hope they'll see there isn't a happy ending, no matter the results on the field.

Tell us how the discussion went in your class.

I don't think the Mitchell report was a good idea. It's just ruining the image of baseball for many people. There's no way to tell how much of the report is real, or how much is just rumors. I watched ESPN and all they talked about was the Mitchell report and what needs to be done. Its not helping baseball any saying that they have bad people playing.

i think that this kids mom is too mean. that is not a fair punishment. the most that she could have done was maybe give you a second chance, or taken your car away for a couple weeks. anyways you are a little too old for your mom to be doing things like those to you.

I think this mom has a perfect title for herself. As for the kid that was pretty bad. Now for the punishment I don't really know when fair comes into play. That wasn't a very fair way to point out that what he did was wrong. I think should could've told him that she would warn him or take his car away for a couple of weeks. Now that would be fair. But then again my dad always says, "The fair only comes once a year " so in some ways this punishment wasn't fair then again it was fair. (P.S. I think it is really cool you let kids say what they are thinking) Thanx
