Phoning while Flying?

The FCC is considering whether to allow people to make calls from their cell phones while flying.  Many folks would undoubtedly find this convenient and a good way to pass the time on a long flight.  But what would it be like to sit next to someone (who may not be a quiet talker) while he or she is on the phone for hours at a time?

Would love to get your thoughts on whether the FCC and the airlines should allow talking on the phone while you're in flight.

I think that using a phone while on a plane is fine.I mean what's wrong with that?

the problem with that is the WIFI signal that the phone produces can scramble the plains radar and navigation systems

Using a phone – fine. Go ahead and play games, watch movies, text, email, etc.

Talking – no way. It's rude, it's probably not important, and you subject everyone in your vicinity to unwanted details from your life. It reflects poorly upon you, and makes those around you uncomfortable. It's just basic human decency not to talk on the phone. I am surprised people don't seem to know this, frankly.

I THINK THEY SHOULD LET PEOPLE USE LAPTOPS,iPODS, iPHONES AND ANY OTHER DEVICES IT A GOOD IDEA TO USE DEVICES ON THE PLANES. BECAUSE PEOPLE JUST DON'T WANT TO SIT THERE UNTIL THEY GET TO THEY FLIGHT AND JUST LOOK AT THE WINDOW A DO NOTHING IT NOT FAIR

I think people should be able to wait for the duration of the flight to make phone calls. It is more important to have a safe flight without any interference than to talk to your friends. People are too attached to their phones...

What if you had to sit next to a loud talker with your young child who is trying to sleep?

What if you had to sit next to a loud person on a plane for a long time with your child trying to sleep.

My mom works for an airline and and they have already allowed other devices like iPads, iPods, and Laptops from gate to gate. I think they should let cell phones only during taxi and after takeoff, you don't want any malfunctions during takeoff, but also it may be a safety hazard for the connections running with the planes navigation system that was the reason they wouldn't allow them in the first place

I think you should be able to use your phone (on the plane) but I think calling can wait

Flying regularly for work, I hear various types of conversations on an airplane - and, participate in some myself. Generally, people hold "normal" level conversation but to add that extra level that accompanies cell phone conversations would be obnoxious. There is rarely something so life-critical that cannot wait. So, how about opening the web and texting to everyone, free of charge (or have the carrier pitch in some money to the airlines) ? To the point of talking on one's cell phone - being in a confined space w/ 50-100 others talking slightly-louder-than-usual......just say NO.....please.

They should allow phones on flights. As long as they are on airplane mode, what's the big deal? To some people Instagram cannot wait.

    November 24, 2013 at 10:52 pm |
  9. Avery

Absolutely not. When I'm on a plane, I feel relaxed because you can't use phones so the plane doesn't crash. If this takes effect I don't think I will ever fly again.

    November 24, 2013 at 10:54 pm |
  10. Maranda

Yes they should. On my most recent flight I was using my iPod and they confiscated it. Some people need them for work or school. The rule should certainly be adjusted.

cant you just wait until they lift off then use your Ipad why cant you just wait 5 or 10 minutes

  11. Erika

Of course not. If everyone on the plane uses their phone there is a greater chance of the plane's mechanics going wrong. If this happens I will not use my phone on board and influence others not to either.

  12. Kendell

I support it all the way. I use my phone 24/7 and I always have to put my phone in my bags in flight. I think as long as it is on Airplane Mode everything should be fine. We pay for the phone every month, we have the right to use it in the air.

    November 24, 2013 at 11:03 pm |
  13. Kamryn

Personally, I fly every month for softball. My parents don't fly with me and they are always wondering if I'm okay. I would prefer for it to be issued but you have to follow the rules.

I often get bored on long plane flights and would love to be able to talk on my phone. If the person sitting next to me was really distracted by it, I am sure they would talk to me and we could work out a solution.

    November 24, 2013 at 11:16 pm |
  15. Rob

No way! There's. already enough annoyance and rudeness on airplanes. People can do their phoning before or after the flight.

  16. Royce

Sure, I would love to chat with my friend while falling asleep. Just as long as it doesn't kill me.

No Phone of any type shod make phone calls on a plane in the air. It can interfere with the autopilot and make the plane crash.

Yes, only if research proves this would work. I don know.

    November 25, 2013 at 4:15 am |
  18. Danny

I think its a bad idea. I wouldn't like the whole plane chattering away while I'm trying to sleep.

    November 25, 2013 at 7:47 am |
  19. Hunter

this would be nice, to be able to contact people while on a long flight, but it could make flights worse for fellow passengers. they could enforce a time limit for cell phone usage so they don't annoy everyone too bad.

    November 25, 2013 at 8:22 am |
  20. Joe

I think it wouldn't do much harm. People should be aloud to speak with friends or family on the trip to where ever. All though people say it could affect the plane people should be able to contact some one in case of a emergency,

    November 25, 2013 at 8:45 am |
  21. Minsue

Phone calls wouldn't make the airlines explode or damage the parts in the plane, but it will surely make the other passengers feel uncomfortable listening to those who talk on their phones...

    November 25, 2013 at 9:09 am |
  22. Lizzy

People need to be respectful of other people. If they allow people to talk on cell phones during the flight no one will feel peaceful. People could be talking during night hours and others might get any sleep. If they do allow it I say only for emergencies.

Carl, I don't think it's a good idea to be able to use your phone on a plane. What if terrorists are communicating through cellular phones.

    November 25, 2013 at 9:37 am |
  26. Dukey

I believe that there should be a soundproof room or booth where passengers can call other people. It won't interrupt and annoy people as well as give the caller some privacy.

  27. Dreamer

if I was beside a loud talker on the airplane I would put earphones on and turn the music all the way up so I wont hear them.

  28. RD7

I think allowing people to use their cell phones during a flight because it could be very useful and less boring. That way people can have things to do instead of sitting there for hours.

    November 25, 2013 at 9:44 am |
  29. David

i really don't think people should talk on there phones while on a plane. some people really talk loud when they are talking on a phone. some people want to sleep on the whole way there and not be interrupted by the loud talking people

    November 25, 2013 at 9:45 am |
  30. Austin

i think that they should be able to ralk on their phone, but for a limited time while on the flight. So that will make every one happy.

    November 25, 2013 at 9:45 am |
  31. Diana

It wont matter to me unless I'm very sleepy. Many people who get on airplanes are busy and have been working for some time. They'll be irritated. I think we should have some earphones that block noise for people who really need/want it. I'd hate to see people fight over something like this.

  32. lazaro

i think that it all right to talk on you phone while you are in a plane but they most just letme talk for a while and the not to be talk for a long time

    November 25, 2013 at 9:47 am |
  33. Claudia

I think that people should just use the phone on the airplane to call someone but if not i still think you shouldn't use a cell phone on the airplane. And another think i think you should use it if someone calls you only just in case of an emergencys.

    November 25, 2013 at 9:55 am |
  34. Seth

I would think that this wouldn't be aloud simply because of all the technology on the plane. I would have though that it would have interrupted the systems on the plane. But in some cases im pretty sure its safe.

    November 25, 2013 at 10:14 am |
  35. Dylan

I think It is a good idea because I have never seen proof that it can cause a problem.

    November 25, 2013 at 10:30 am |
  36. Ashlynn

I think that people should be allowed to text on their phone as long as the phone is not loud. Talking on the phone while flying is not cool, some people are just loud and this would make it so people would not want to fly.

    November 25, 2013 at 10:34 am |
  37. Nick

No,because for many years people have been telling other people"turn of your cellphones". Talking on your phone could distract the pilot or cause discomfort to the passengers because of the persons conversation.

    November 25, 2013 at 10:42 am |
  38. Dra

I really don't think they should allow anyone to TALK on the phone, because if everyone did that, it would sound like you're in a lunchroom and the other line won't hear you. Other than that, I don't know about using it for games or anything because it might damage the plane itself and might crash.

PS. My name is pronounced DRAY.

i Think It Should Remain the same people should not be on the phone while flying

    November 25, 2013 at 11:11 am |
  40. Kaye

I think people on planes should be able to use their phones but they shouldn't be able to talk on them. I couldn't imagine being on a flight beside someone who is constantly talking on the phone. It can annoy and aggravate a lot of people who doesn't talk that much or communicate a lot.

    November 25, 2013 at 11:13 am |
  41. Tyler

some people want to but that's there opinion I mean I don't take flights but it gets boring and people wanna talk when nobody aint around.

no you shoudnt be able to talk on the phone on a airplane. because it is a in convinence for others on the plane with you

  43. thomas

i think it should be aginst the rules to talk on the cell phone cause what happens if somebody would have there phone on speaker to it would get on your neves to have to hear a arrgument over the phone.

  44. Tori

I think that people should be able to make calls while there on planes because what if a emergency or something happened to a family member

    November 25, 2013 at 11:15 am |
  45. Audrey

I think they shouldn't let people have phone calls on planes because its a disturbance to the rest of the passengers.

    November 25, 2013 at 11:15 am |
  46. Jessica

I think people need to continue not to use phones on a airplane. There's enough casualties as it is riding planes and adding something like that won't help. I could see if it would be beneficial but if you're in the sky you don't need nothing from nobody on a phone.

    November 25, 2013 at 11:15 am |
  47. Stefanie

I think that there should be texting aloud on airplanes and phone usage because this allows you to communicate to family and friends on your location and such.

    November 25, 2013 at 11:16 am |
  48. Zachary

    It won't work very well.

    November 25, 2013 at 11:16 am |
  49. Leah

I think they should allow it because there are plenty of ways to contact others outside of the plane so they should just let it go!

    November 25, 2013 at 11:16 am |
  50. ryan

i don't think it will fly

    November 25, 2013 at 11:17 am |
  51. Will

It's not a good idea. Loud talkers would be extremely irritating to those nearby him, trying to sleep, or pass the time some other way. We are already allowed to text on wifi, so let's just stick with that

    November 25, 2013 at 11:17 am |
  52. Audrey

I dont think they will pass it because having phone calls on a plane is a disturbance to the other passengers.

    November 25, 2013 at 11:17 am |
  53. Andrew

    It won't pass!

    November 25, 2013 at 11:17 am |
  54. Alexandra

I think airlines should not allow talking on the phone while you're in flight. There is the possibility of being disruptive to others and risks with the security of the flight. Because of the security issues that have been going on recently, I don't think this would be a smart decision since it can put those flights at risk of danger.

    November 25, 2013 at 11:18 am |
  55. Annette

Although some people will be annoyed with the fact that they cannot use their phones on planes, I think it is a good idea to ultimately help prevent terrorist attacks. This way, the pilot will have a better connection with whoever they'd have to contact in case there was an attack.

    November 25, 2013 at 11:19 am |
  56. Camille

I wouldn't feel any safer on a plane if people weren't allowed to make phone calls. Though I don't know about you, but I don't want to listen to someone else's conversations while flying in such a contained space. Lets stick to silent texting via wifi.

    November 25, 2013 at 11:20 am |
  57. Ro'darius

i think that the fcc should not approve that because that would cause more trouble in the airport

    November 25, 2013 at 11:22 am |
  58. Jaye

I mean having your phone would be a convenient way to pass along time seeing that there might be a very talkative person next to you. Cell phones just shouldn't be on planes.

    November 25, 2013 at 11:22 am |
  59. Alysia

I don't think they should let us talk on the phone while flying a plane cause u can lose control and plus how u going to talk on the phone when u don't have service up in the air.

    November 25, 2013 at 11:24 am |
  60. Sierra

they should allow phones on a flight incase they need to contact someone at home but have an area where they can do that.

    November 25, 2013 at 11:24 am |
  61. Chloe

I think that you should be able to use your phone on a plane because maybe you have to talk to a family member or even a far away friend.

    November 25, 2013 at 11:41 am |
  62. Hannah

I think they should allow us to have cell phones and other electronics on air planes because if there is an emergency and you need to call someone or you need to go on line to pay a bill you can! Or if you for got to lock your car and you have the app on your phone you could do that too! So that us why I think you should be able to have electronics on an airplane

    November 25, 2013 at 11:46 am |
  63. Abby

I think people should be able to use their phones while flying because if there was an emergency and they needed to call someone they could do it quickly and not have to wait till the flight is over.

    November 25, 2013 at 11:48 am |
  64. casiana

I think being on the phone while flying should be a personal choice. I don't agree or disagree with it. To be honest I wouldn't do it. But that's just me. Make up your own mind.

    November 25, 2013 at 11:49 am |
  65. Amanda

I think we should get to use our phones on an airplane, but I don't think we should be able to make calls. Other people can be disrespectful of other peoples personal space. We should be aloud to use our phones for texting and games and things because you can still communicate and keep yourself entertained.

    November 25, 2013 at 11:51 am |
  66. Cecily and Sara

We think that this idea of phoning while flying is not a good idea because it will disturb others. Flying in a plane is stressful enough, but flying while the people next to you are talking really loud on their phone will not help your situation.

    November 25, 2013 at 11:55 am |
  67. Andrew

I think you should because you shold beable to talk or text your friends and play games on your phone

    November 25, 2013 at 11:56 am |
  68. Bryce

Being an experienced traveler, I know that calling someone on a plane can be pretty convienient. But, someone who doesn't necessarily have a quiet voice, even when they aren't talking on the phone, can be really annoying and disruptive (espescialy on overnight flights). I don't think that the FAA should let people talk on the phone, but Ithink that people should be allowed to text, because it would be a lot less disruptive to other people on the plane.

    November 25, 2013 at 11:56 am |

It's already bad listening to baby's cry now phone calls? I couldn't handle myself.

    November 25, 2013 at 11:56 am |

I think you should because you should talk or text your friends and play games on the phone

    November 25, 2013 at 11:57 am |

If it could possible mess with the planes stuff than NO safety first..even if their is a little chance of it happening ,it could happen so I do not think using a phone on a plane, rather than using ur phone talk to people around you

  72. Mr. Miller's Period 4/5 A Social Studies class

  73. Arion

If the FCC decided to let people make calls on their cell phones while flying they should have a rule that says you must keep an inside voice while on making a phone call the plane.

    November 25, 2013 at 11:57 am |
  74. felicity

They should not allow people to talk on a phone while being on a plane because I'm sure people would be very annoyed to sit next to someone who talks very loud on the phone for the whole plane ride. It may even ruin someone's whole plane ride experience.

    November 25, 2013 at 11:58 am |
  75. Alyse

I don't think people should talk on the phone while they are on the plane because phones interfere with the plane(s) also I think it would bug people because I don't think people want to listen to your phone calls with your family and friends.

  76. Cynthia

Well i think emergency calls should be made if necessary, but these days, most people prefer to text instead of actually calling some one. It is up to the individual airlines to decide whether or not phones should be allowed, but i believe that unless the plane is taking off or landing or there is some sort of weather interference, phones and other electronic devices should be allowed.

    November 25, 2013 at 12:01 pm |
  77. Hailey

I don't think it should be allowed because it obviously has some kind of effect on how the planes run, if it didn't do anything then they would have allowed to before.

    November 25, 2013 at 12:03 pm |
  78. Ethan

I think it would a good and bad idea. Good because you can plug in your headphones to ignore Mr. Noisy on the plane. Bad because it is possible that electronics could mess up the satelittles or your battery can die.

    November 25, 2013 at 12:06 pm |
  79. Samuel

I don't really know if cell phone signals do affect planes, but if it doesn't they should be allowed. If it is proven then they shouldn't allow cell phone calls.

    November 25, 2013 at 12:32 pm |
  80. Harper

I think you should be allowed to make calls on the plane because as we know the phone does not interfere with the plane

    November 25, 2013 at 12:43 pm |

    November 25, 2013 at 1:23 pm |

they shouldn't because it can mess with the airplane stuff and make them wreck

well in my opinion if a person as a important call they have to make they should use their cell phones but other than that they shouldn't use use their cell phones

    November 25, 2013 at 1:25 pm |
  85. Romana

My thoughts about this are that people should not have their phones on during the flight. In the planes have been hijacked and people could start complaining about it. Also those people who talk louder than they should on the phone during the flight , that is some people's petpeeve

    November 25, 2013 at 1:27 pm |
  86. Hayden

I don't think they should ban phone calls on flights. Everyone has the right to use their phone. If someone does not like it then they can move, ask to move away from the person on the phone, or ask the person on the phone to be quite.

    November 25, 2013 at 1:28 pm |
  87. Sha-Tara

No they should not. Some people do not know how to talk quiet. It will get very annoying if you can hear someone whole conversation. Then they wonder why people know all their business.

    November 25, 2013 at 1:29 pm |
  88. zaria

i think it is not a good thing because it passes time to be able to post or chat.

    November 25, 2013 at 1:29 pm |
  89. Dillon

i may sound like a pessimist here, but it is a great idea because people could call their loved ones if a plane is hijacked, or is going down.

    November 25, 2013 at 2:06 pm |
  90. Ivan

I think we should have it because what if people are on a trip and something happens? But yet it's bad becausee u could affect the plne

It would be cool to be on your phone during flight, but I think people shouldn't be able to talk on their phones because that would be annoying.

  93. Cassidy

I think that talking on the phone on planes should be banned because if I was on a plane I would not want people blabbering in my ear when I'm trying to relax.

    November 25, 2013 at 2:51 pm |
  94. Jazmine

No it should not be banned. People want to watch television when they're on a plane not watch what's on the planes television. They want to communicate with friends not wait until they get off the plane.

We'll I have never been on a plane before so but I would never want some being like " CAN YOU HERE ME?"I mean I would hate that

    November 25, 2013 at 3:00 pm |
  96. Shane

I don't think people should use a phone on planes period. The world won't end if you can't contact that person right away and if it has the potential to put others in danger than they are causing nothing but trouble.

    November 25, 2013 at 3:01 pm |
  97. Miguel

i feel if people need to use their phone for urgent needs, then thats ok. If it isnt urgent, then they should keep themselves occupied with other things. People talking on their phones could bother other people.

i think they should cause if your caught in a storm and have no way of calling your family or friends to ask them to pick u up then u have to wait until the plain lands to call and if your visiting a releative in a diffrent state it would be good to call from the plane and tell the person your visting that your on your way.

I think we should NOT be able because think how annoying it would be, the person next to you talking the whole time!

    November 25, 2013 at 6:16 pm |
  102. olivia

i don't believe we should because the noise level would rise and nobody could hear anything. And do they even get a reception that high?

  103. Alisa

I don't think they should allow phone calls during a plane trip. Even if they confirm it's safe, I would be too anxious about it. The first time I went on a plane, they made it a very big deal to keep our phones off during the trip because it could interfere with satellites so I would feel very uneasy if the person next to me could talk on the phone. I think just to make humans less scared of planes, they shouldn't not allow phone calls on plane since a lot of people are afraid of planes, like myself, already.

  104. Ruben

The FCC should allow using phones in certain flights (who knows? Maybe the plane can or cannot hold phones being used) If people use their phones randomly without the FCC approving it, the phone signal might interfere with the plane signal to its airport/ station.

  105. Addy

I think that it would be convenient for people who run businesses and other work related things, But it would be a burden for others who may need to catch up on sleep to constantly hear talking around them, especially if the people talking are loud and talking about something that their passionate about. For example, last night's football game.

    November 25, 2013 at 7:58 pm |
  106. Jonathan

I would not allow it. In case the pilot or captain says something that is needed to be heard, they could miss it and something bad could happen.

    November 25, 2013 at 8:42 pm |
  107. Carter

If the person is talking rudely, than they shouldn't allow it.

    November 25, 2013 at 8:46 pm |
  108. Nicole

I think it shouldn't be allowed, because it never has before. Sometimes innocent people get stuck sitting by someone who talks a lot, and if they are going to be allowed to talk on their phones, they will talk more. It may then cause those innocent people to not fly anymore.

    November 25, 2013 at 9:54 pm |
  109. Tate

I don't know why its bad while talking on the plane, but if its an international issue then its major

    November 25, 2013 at 10:08 pm |
  110. Jake

If it were approved, and said no damage was done during the flight, why would the airlines not allow it? If there is no harm then there is no point in not?

    The benefits outweigh the negatives!

    November 25, 2013 at 10:09 pm |
  111. sheril

I think they should not allow people to use phones during the flight. It could be a disturbance to other passengers. It could also distract the pilot.

    November 25, 2013 at 10:15 pm |
  112. Kate

I believe that the FCC and the airlines should allow passengers to make calls on their phone during their flight. To avoid people who talk loud disturbing others, maybe the FCC or the airlines should consider creating a rule that states that passengers can use their celllphones to make calls, but they can't be loud while making their call.

    November 26, 2013 at 8:30 am |
  113. Lucas

This is a controversial decision. People know that making calls on a plane can disrupt it and cause a malfunction, but if the airlines allow it than people will think it is okay to make a call at any altitude. I say no because if I was on a plane, I would not want to take that risk.

    November 26, 2013 at 8:44 am |
  114. Joshua

I personally believe that they should allow cell phone calls on a flight, especially if it is a two day flight.

    November 26, 2013 at 10:04 am |
  115. jessica

I don't think that the FCC should allow people to make calls on a plane because even though it is a small chance that it will interfere with the how well the plane flies. I just don't think the people should risk there safety to be entertained.

    November 26, 2013 at 5:23 pm |
  116. jessica

I don't think that the FCC should allow people to make calls on a plane there are already enough things on them like t.vs, bathrooms and many more electronics even though it is a small chance that it will interfere with the how well the plane flies there is still a chance. I just don't think the people should risk there safety to be entertained that just seems stupid.

    November 26, 2013 at 5:34 pm |
  117. Caitlynn

I think people should only use their cell phones when or if they need them. using a phone on a flying aircraft can cause miscalculations because it might get into the radio channel the pilot is using. therefore the people should not be using a cell phone a lot on a flying aircraft

    November 26, 2013 at 6:03 pm |
  118. Kayla

The FCC should not allow phones. If I were sitting next to my brother while he's tweeting away on his phone it'd be a pretty dull flight.

    November 26, 2013 at 9:47 pm |
  119. Shelia

We are already a captive audience on a flight with enough noise and no options to move. A good percentage of passengers try to catch a quick nap, do some reading or a bit of work. Do we really have to have that noise pollution added? If so, make the passengers that WANT to talk on thier phones purchase seats in a separate section with a sound divider, not the ones that want a little peace on their trip.

    November 27, 2013 at 9:09 am |
  120. Kayleigh

I think its a great idea! Seriously you could play awesome games like temple run, minecraft, and if they let you have phones ipods etc. hopefully they will have WIFI so you can text. It would be great!

    November 27, 2013 at 1:28 pm |
  121. Madye

In airplanes, the captain prefers that all phones are off or not in use during flight. The rule is used for a reason. You don't want to mess up the mechanics of the plane for a greater chance of crash. It's best the rule doesn't become a thing.

    November 27, 2013 at 1:53 pm |
  122. Tony

I think allowing internet access if fine for any flight over 60 minutes (less 20 minutes post/prior to takeoff or landing). Being able to conduct business, check e-mail, or just goof off on a social network makes the time go by a little easier.

However, I do not want to listen to other people's conversations. That's part of the reasons alirlines stopped having those phones in the seatbacks. Short of an emergency, it's just plain rude. No one is that important that they cannot wait unti they are safely back on the ground to makr or receive a call. The people that think they are that important, usually fly a government, private or charter aircraft anyhow.

I work in a position where I am on call for 24 – 96 hours (or more) at a time; and whether its business or pleasure travel, when I'm flying, I do not want to be bothered. Besides, commercial airlines are private businesses, and if they are smart, they won't allow it even if the FCC/FAA permit it. Too much business to lose from people llike me who can afford to fly on their vacations.

    November 27, 2013 at 2:56 pm |
  123. Shaeleigh

I think people are allowed to phone while flying because what happens when your flight is delayed or you made it to the location safely, no one knows what goes on inside an airport.

    November 27, 2013 at 4:31 pm |
  124. Taegun

The FCC should not allow phoning while flying because if something goes wrong the phones might only make it worse.

    November 27, 2013 at 7:37 pm |
  125. Edward

Commercial flying now is barely tolerable at best and typically horrible. With small and getting smaller seats, jam-packed small planes, large carry-ons to avoid paying luggage fees, disinterested flight attendants, delays, fees for everything. Now we might have to put up with people yacking on their cell phones during flights?! NO THANKS! That long drive to avoid flying is looking better and better.

    November 29, 2013 at 11:12 am |
  126. Judi

No, No, please no cellphone use on commercial airlines – not in flight, not while taxiing.

    November 30, 2013 at 8:43 am |
  127. Ben

I find talking on phones in a confined area just as offensive as smoking. So they should take it outside (30,000 ft) with the smokers. It might be cold and breezy but they will get the point!

    November 30, 2013 at 7:00 pm |
  128. Shawn

I think that it would be OK if they had no talk zones in planes.

    November 30, 2013 at 11:17 pm |
  129. Marcus

The use of cellular devices while on a plane can indeed be beneficial to bored individuals who wish to pass the time, however this also runs the risk of allowing certain loud and disruptive talkers to disturb others. If cell phone usage is going to be allowed, then separate sections should be introduced also, like a smoker area being away from a non-smoking area.

    December 1, 2013 at 2:37 am |
  130. Miriam

I think it would be okay to phone while flying, as long as the person talks on the phone for an appropriate amount of time!

    December 1, 2013 at 10:45 am |
  131. Grant

Although convenient, using a phone while in flight is not worth the risk of death, not only for the caller, but each passenger aboard until proven safe. The phone call can wait.

    December 2, 2013 at 12:22 am |
  132. Christopher

From what I understand, we now have the technology to be able to use our cell phones while on a flight, and now that we have that technology why not use it? As long as it poses no threat to the safety and well being of the passengers onboard.

    December 2, 2013 at 1:07 am |
  133. Ryan

I think it would be okay to be on your phone, so you can talk to your relatives but for a limited amount of time.

    December 2, 2013 at 9:39 am |
  134. Natalie

I think it would be okay to use a phone on the plane if it is allowed because people do get bored and need something to do especially when it is a long flight. But if it interferes with the plane and is a hazard to everyone on the plane the no I don't think they should be allowed.

    December 2, 2013 at 9:40 am |
  135. Dalton and Timothy

Yeah, why not its the reason people buy phones is to use them and if they are not aloud to use them on a airplane then that would stop a lot of people from flying instead to drive

    December 2, 2013 at 9:40 am |
  136. Sabrina

I think people should not be able to use their phones because the didn't allow phones to be on, on the plane as a safety precaution. If people can't wait to talk to that person, or play games on their phone their too attached. You can read a book, it's quiet and doesn't disturb anyone.

    December 2, 2013 at 9:44 am |
  137. Amie

I think that phones (on airplanes) is okay as long as it doesn't interfere with the radio signals, and/or others on the plane.

    December 2, 2013 at 9:44 am |
  138. savannah

Yeah, we should be able to use are phones on the plane because its a free country and we can use are phone only IF they allow it if they don't then we are going to have to listen to the FCC and not use phones.

    December 2, 2013 at 9:44 am |
  139. Whittany

Yes, I think you should be able to have phones on planes. Because celebrities tweet and text on planes. So, why can't we? Also there are other things you can do on technical devices, like reading, or playing games.

    December 2, 2013 at 9:45 am |
  140. Morgan

I do not think that people should be able to talk on their phones while flying because a lot of people can talk for hours at a time without stopping, and if that happens it is possible that someone could freak out and cause harm to other passengers.

    December 2, 2013 at 9:46 am |
  141. Mary

Safety should be first. If the cell phone signals interfere with the plane, then they shouldn't have them. If making a call could jeopardize the safety of the people on the plane, then they shouldn't be allowed. If cellphones don't interfere with the plane then I think it would be okay, as long they speak for the appropriate mount of time. They would also have to be aware of their surroundings, so they don't bother anyone around them.

    December 2, 2013 at 9:47 am |
  142. Lexie

I think we should be able to use our phones on the planes but you should just be able to text not call cuz like the story said you don't want to be sitting by someone who is on the phone and isn't a quiet talker.

    December 2, 2013 at 9:47 am |
  143. Asia & Alisa

We don't think people should be to use there phones for calling because if they have games or something other than that than they could easily be occupied by that. if they wanted to talk they could talk to someone new. its always good to meet new people. Plus I'm sure the plane has stuff they could do to.

    December 2, 2013 at 9:49 am |
  144. Trevor

I think they should be allowed to text, play games, look up something or want to listen to music at a reasonable volume (with headphones) that should be allowed but I don't think calling should be allowed on planes. I also think they should have ringers down.

    December 2, 2013 at 9:49 am |
  145. Moses

No, I don't think there should be cell phone use on planes because of the chances that the mechanics of the plane being messed with the signals from the phones and you could get the 24/7 talker sitting next to you which would ruin the peace of the plane rides. The second option for the people that would want to talk could be to go outside and talk...

    December 2, 2013 at 9:51 am |
  146. Caleb

I think that if they find a way to allow you to talk on the phone without interfering with the instruments on the plane, that's great. But if its still even a little bit of a safety concern then they should keep the rule, since your not only putting yourself in danger, but other passengers as well.

    December 2, 2013 at 10:36 am |

I think it would be okay to talk on the phone on a plane because if your going long distances then you'll want to talk to the family member your visiting, or whoever your going to see.

    December 2, 2013 at 10:36 am |
  148. Jared

yes: because it doesn't hurt anybody and if someone in your family id really ill or dying your going to want to know and it is also a good way to pass time.

    December 2, 2013 at 10:36 am |
  149. GiGi

Sitting next to someone who is constantly talking would really be annoying. If you had a 17 hour flight and wanted to get some sleep before you landed it would hardly be possible, especially if they didn't talk quietly.

    December 2, 2013 at 10:37 am |
  150. Gage

I think that they should not allow people to talk while on a plane, I personally would like to relax on a plane instead of listening to a persons conversation that may be loud and obnoxious.

    December 2, 2013 at 10:37 am |
  151. Kalli

Phoning while flying has always been a hot issue. I think that if you get to a certain safe altitude you should be aloud to use your phone to pass the time away, but when the flight attendants tell you to turn them off you should do so.

    December 2, 2013 at 10:37 am |
  152. Brad

yes because there is nothing to do on a plane.

    December 2, 2013 at 10:38 am |

yes because there is nothing to do on a plane.

    December 2, 2013 at 10:38 am |
  154. Heather

I don't think phone should be allowed on planes, because it could cause the plane to have problems. If the plane has problems it could crash. If it crashes many people could die, and if people die the company could have to pay money for what happened. The captain could go to jail because that is considered murder.

    December 2, 2013 at 10:38 am |
  155. Samantha

I think it would be great for those long 12 hour flights, but I talk kinda loud when I am on the phone, and I wouldn't want to disturb other people. If someone around me was talking on their phone (really loud) and I was trying to sleep I would be kinda mad. If people kept their voices quiet, it would be great, and I would do the same thing for them.

    December 2, 2013 at 10:39 am |
  156. Garett

It would not be a good idea to let people talk on their phones, because of the annoyance of people talking constantly, when you are trying to sleep or do any kind of work. The phones may distracted the flight crew in an emergency, or interfere with cockpit controls in an emergency at 30,000 ft.

    December 2, 2013 at 10:39 am |
  157. Aemilio

I think that it would be good to have the right to use your phone on the plane their has been no proof that it makes a problem.

    December 2, 2013 at 10:39 am |
  158. Jessa

I think its okay to call someone on the phone. If hes talking to loud you can kindly ask him to be quiet. But if that doesn`t work, there should be a place that he can go to talk so he dosen

    December 2, 2013 at 10:39 am |
  159. Hallie

I think that it would be fine if that person would be respectful to others while there talking on the phone, if there being to loud I think they shouldn't worry about there phone. Also if one of the flight audiences asks you to put your phone you should do it, because it could interfere with the planes radio or technology.

    December 2, 2013 at 10:40 am |
  160. Gloria

I don't think having you're phone on is a good idea on a plane. But if it is an emergency and its very urgent then maybe just talk quite and quick but talking on the phone for hours would get annoying to others. so you should be respectful.

    December 2, 2013 at 10:40 am |
  161. hannah

I don't think that it would be so bad because if you are talking to a family member on a plane why should the people on the plane would complain about it, and there's nothing to do on the plane.

    December 2, 2013 at 10:41 am |
  162. Dillon

I think people should be able to go to the back of the plane and do it or in a bathroom or something. It would be inconvenient to have to take a flight and have to listen to someone jabber on for ten minutes or even a half-hour. At the same time though it would be tough to communicate with people if you were to meet someone at the airport or something to tell them if you're close to landing or what time they should come to pick you up.

    December 2, 2013 at 10:41 am |
  163. Earl

I don't have a problem with what you do up there. Plane tickets are so expensive you should be able to at least be talkin on your cell phone. #YEEYEE

  164. Jessie

I think it`s okay to call someone on the phone while on the plane. If he's talking to loud you can kindly ask him to be quiet. But if that doesn't work, there should be a place he can go to talk on the phone so he doesn't disturb the other people on the plane.

    December 2, 2013 at 10:43 am |
  165. Skye

Well, I don't think it should matter because I'm not the one talking on the phone, but people should not get into another's business when on the plane. I could understand if someone did not like the noise, but I guess it would be okay for someone talk!

    December 2, 2013 at 10:43 am |
  166. Chase

Sure it might be convenient for the people using their devices but for people without them they might just want some peace and quiet. I think if someone is taking a nap or resting the people talking on their phones should be polite and just text.

    December 2, 2013 at 10:47 am |
  167. Akeem

I think that they shouldn't be able to use cellular devices on a plan because i don't want to die

    December 2, 2013 at 10:52 am |
  168. Dillon

I think they shouldn't because it could be annoying they can text but if its like important they should make an area or somewhere for people to go to talk on the phone

    December 2, 2013 at 12:19 pm |
  169. Quinten

I think it should be up to you but you would have to have your device on mute and no calling only texting.

i find that it would be a good way to pass time on a plane and may be a good idea if it weren't so annoying to listen to somebody talking on the phone for hours at a time.its a good idea but no it isn't possible some one to listen to that.

    December 2, 2013 at 12:20 pm |

  172. claire

No I don't think people should be allowed to talk on the phone while on an airplane. I personally wouldn't want to sit next to somebody talking loudly about their plans for the weekend. On the other hand people can talk in person on planes and be loud so it may not make a difference.

    December 2, 2013 at 12:23 pm |
  173. Faith

Well, it doesn't really matter to me because what if they are having personal business and it's really important, but you also have to think about the interactions between the phone and the plane also people trying to relax. :{)

    December 2, 2013 at 12:23 pm |
  174. Lils

In my own opinion, I don't really care if we are allowed to use cellular devices, because sometimes people need to call because of something important, but some people might want it to be quiet and relaxing.

    December 2, 2013 at 12:24 pm |
  175. Jordan

i think they shouldn't because this could interfere with the ground control and the pilots this might confesses them and end up in a crass also it is rude to call but texting next to some one might be fine cause they cant hear. just turn off the cellar data and play games to pass the time

    December 2, 2013 at 12:24 pm |
  176. Madisyn

I think it's a good idea because it is a good way to pass the time. Also if there was an emergency at home you would want someone to contact you and let you know what is going on right? I know I would. If you just wanted someone to talk to as well you can't unless the rules change. If I sat by someone who was a loud talker I would ask them to quit there voice and if they don't then drown them out with music!

    December 2, 2013 at 12:25 pm |
  177. Connor

I would say it would be okay to let them only if it doesn't affect anything in the control area. It would nice to use your phone if you have kids that you are going away from for some time to talk on the plane to them. They just need to be polite to the people around them.

    December 2, 2013 at 12:29 pm |
  178. Trevor

I think its OK at a certain altitude

    December 2, 2013 at 2:12 pm |
  179. Ricky

I think it is a bad idea because your call might be privet and the person next to you might eavesdrop on your call.

    December 2, 2013 at 2:14 pm |
  180. Jenna

I think no. They shouldn't let people talk on their phone because their phones can mess with the plane receivers, making them crash. They should only be able to use their phones if it is a plane that is made for that kind of thing.

    December 2, 2013 at 2:15 pm |
  181. Lauren

I think that would be okay, because if you are going on a long trip you would be very bored and also could get sleepy and could possibly crash.

    December 2, 2013 at 2:16 pm |
  182. Brenden

I think we should be able to use phones on airplanes so we can communicate with others. also I think this because what happens if your planes is in a storm or you will be late to the airport how are people suppose to help you or know were you are.

    December 2, 2013 at 2:16 pm |
  183. Seanna

I say they shouldn't be aloud to talk on there phones while in flight because that would be very annoying sitting there for hours just talking. I say it would be okay to text but not talk because texting doesnt bother anyone.

    December 2, 2013 at 2:16 pm |
  184. steven

I think they should allow it because if you are taking a long flight, you would like to pass the time by playing on your phone. Also, they shouldn't allow it because it could mess up the receivers and they plane might lose power or we could lose communication with the tower. So, I am good with both ways.

    December 2, 2013 at 2:17 pm |
  185. Zoe

I think it would be a great pastime, but if you're sitting next to someone who is a loud talker just ask them nicely to quiet down or ask them to text instead of talking.

    December 2, 2013 at 2:17 pm |
  186. Penelope

I think people should be able to use phones on planes, because if a family emergency happened and you were on a plane wouldn't you want to know about it as soon as possible. And about the loud mouths, you can get those head phones that have a microphone attached so it is easier to hear and speak to a person you are contacting.

    December 2, 2013 at 2:18 pm |
  187. Jasmine

I don't think this is a good idea because what if you do sit by someone that talks really loud, but what if you need to call some family to let them know if you made it on the plane or not. I kind of in the middle on this one

    December 2, 2013 at 2:19 pm |
  188. LeeAnn

I think people should be able to use cell phones on planes. It would be a good convenience, and you would be able to let your family know when you're almost landing. However I understand the point of view of the person sitting by the person talking on the phone. It would become quite annoying to sit by someone that is on the phone if you were trying to sleep. I think they should divide the plane up into sections where people sit if they want to call on their phones and a section where people can sit if they don't want to.

    December 2, 2013 at 2:19 pm |
  189. Hannah

I think that they should allow cellular devices on planes because if you needed to call home then you would be able to. Also plane rides can be quit boring so that would give you things to do like play games and call people ect.

  190. Jaelyn

I think that it would be alright to use your phone or electronic device if you are at an acceptable duration where it will not disturb the flight. I don't think they should but if you are going to allow them to use their phones to call they should have a separate part of the plane for that because many people like to sleep on planes and it would be a big disturbance to them. I think that texting would be much better, you need to tell your family and friends how the flight is going.

    December 2, 2013 at 2:20 pm |
  191. Emma

I would think that it would get a little annoying at times if they were on for a long period of time, but only for a few minutes I don't think that would be any bother to me! But what i wouldn't understand is why can't they just text so that it wont annoying anyone? So over all i don't really think its a big deal and it should be aloud as long as they didn't talk for hours at a time.

    December 2, 2013 at 2:20 pm |
  192. Austin

I say yes and no because I don't want to be by someone who keeps on talking for hours, but on the other hand long flights get very boring and talking on the phone could pass the time for people.

    December 2, 2013 at 2:20 pm |
  193. Kinley

I think that they should allow it if they don't bother the people around them. If it's an inconvenience a flight attendant will politely ask you to be quiet or to turn the electronic device off. Maybe be able to limit the amount of time allowed per person.

    December 2, 2013 at 2:21 pm |
  194. Emily

I don't think that you should be allowed to make cell phone calls mid-flight because it has never been allowed before. Surely there is a reason why cell phone calls haven't been allowed before. The cell signals interfere with the plane's devices and a device malfunction 30,000 feet in the air would not be good. Would you like to risk your life just to make a phone call to check in on your hotel room reservations? Besides, better safe than sorry.

    December 2, 2013 at 2:21 pm |
  195. caleb

i think that it should be allowed but if you are talking really loud and there are people taking naps or just want peace and quiet then you should text or not talk at all and do something else.

    December 2, 2013 at 2:22 pm |
  196. Megan

I believe that you should not be able to make calls with your cell phone because some people haven't slept for a while to be able to make their flight and they need some peace and quiet. Or if everyone was on their phone it would be a mess of talking and rude to other people around them. Maybe if they make it so you can only text for privacy reasons that would be better.

    December 2, 2013 at 2:22 pm |
  197. Nathan

I think people should answer cell phones if its a vary important call not something simple like hi or hello.

    December 2, 2013 at 2:23 pm |
  198. Jordan

I think people should be able to do whatever they want, its their business but at the same time I think that people have the right to ask someone to be quiet when they are bothered and even complain to an attendant. I think phones should be allowed because most of the people on the plane are adults and they should be able to handle it.

    December 2, 2013 at 2:32 pm |
  199. Mrs. B

If there is a legitimate safety concern with using cell phones during a flight, then I fully support the ban. However, on most flights, people are talking to other passengers sitting nearby. So to say that you don't want cell phones because you don't want to hear other people's conversations is a moot point. You can't ban all talking. I think if a cell phone user's call becomes disruptive, then a flight attendant should intervene.....the same way they would if an actual conversation became too boisterous on a flight. So, yes cell phones should be allowed, but rules of common courtesy should apply, too.

    December 2, 2013 at 2:58 pm |
  200. skeeter

It would help pass time but there are a lot of people on the plane so it would get loud so it might not be a good thing

    December 2, 2013 at 3:13 pm |
  201. Alexis

I think people should not be able to talk or text on their phone while the plane is air. They shouldn't because if they do let them talk while on the plane, there might be a malfunction and the plane could crash.

    December 2, 2013 at 3:14 pm |
  202. Emily

I don't think that you should be allowed to text or use your phone while in the air. The devices could mess up the pilots radio connection. Then the plane might crash.

    December 2, 2013 at 3:15 pm |
  203. Jessika

I say no, because it could interrupt the pilot's radio to contact the airport for landing and emergencies.

    December 2, 2013 at 3:15 pm |
  204. Jacob

well....Just think of the ground casualties

    December 2, 2013 at 3:15 pm |
  205. Megan

I don't think people should have cell phones while flying because you don't know if it would make the air plane get messed up. And it could be dangerous..!

    December 2, 2013 at 3:16 pm |
  206. Regan

I would NOT want to be stuck be someone for hours having to listen to there phone about their live. I only think they should allow the phone calls if it is a short and brief conversation.

    December 2, 2013 at 3:16 pm |
  207. zayne

I think if it does not interfere with any of the radio control then they should but if it interferes with lots of control were they don't know where they are then no but one more rule is that you have to have the sound all the way down

    December 2, 2013 at 3:16 pm |
  208. Caleb

My opinion about talking on the phone while on a is that people should be able to because they can call someone any other time and people around them could ask them to quiet down if they don't like them being noisy. It passes time for some people because some flights can be long.

    December 2, 2013 at 3:17 pm |
  209. McKenna

I would not want people talking on the phone right next to me, talking about their personal info., that other people don't need to hear or know. It would get annoying and disruptive to the others on the plane, I would be pretty mad if I had to listen to that for a long ride.

    December 2, 2013 at 3:17 pm |
  210. jesse

I think that they should let them use their cell phones on planes because maybe it is an emergency and they should know about it.

    December 2, 2013 at 3:17 pm |
  211. Mikey

I think it would be a bad idea because if people are coming back from a family reunion they might want to nap. People on there phone's should ask if it's ok, they may want you turn it down so they can nap. Other then that I think it would be fine because you might get bored or miss your family.

    December 2, 2013 at 3:18 pm |
  212. Cheyenne

I think it is very dangerous anything could happen at anytime. If it was an emergency I think they should be able to but its not a good idea to just talk to someone for hours for nothing. It I was sitting next to someone that was on the phone for hours I would kind of get mad I didn't get on a plane just to here somebody talk on the phone.

    December 2, 2013 at 3:19 pm |
  213. Jake

If it were approved, and said no damage was done during the flight, why would the airlines not allow it? If there is no harm then there is no point in not?

    December 2, 2013 at 3:21 pm |
  214. Libertee

I think that they should be able to because say if you are going to a different state and you have kids at home and there is a baby sitter watching them and if something bad happened the baby sitter would need to call you

    December 2, 2013 at 4:05 pm |
  215. Jordyn

I think it would be good, but you can only use it for so long like 5-10 minutes. It would get a little annoying but it can be very useful.

    December 2, 2013 at 4:06 pm |
  216. Haley

It is very convenient to pass time by, I don't think it will cause any interference with the plane. I do see where people have issues with it but if it was up to me I would allow it.

    December 2, 2013 at 4:07 pm |
  217. Ashlee

I think using cellphones on a planes would be good and bad at the same time because you could be making an important phone call an the planes but sometimes using a cellphone on a plane can mess up the plane in some way and could cause a crash.

    December 2, 2013 at 4:08 pm |
  218. Haliegh

I don't think they should use their cellular devices because it can cause a interference with the plane. For example, if someone is trying to sleep and the other person next to them might say get off your phone please. So this is what i got to say about it.

    December 2, 2013 at 4:08 pm |
  219. Kyra

I think there should be a certain amount of time to talk. Like if they were talking for to long the flight attendant would tell them to get off.

    December 2, 2013 at 4:08 pm |
  220. Zach

I don't think they should allow cell phone use during a flight because it could interfere with the pilot and the control center communicating. By the way Carol, love your puns!

    December 2, 2013 at 4:09 pm |
  221. Jesse

No because it would be really annoying if your trying to get some sleep for a long flight and someone is on a phone constantly talking to somebody. Just imagine how annoying it would be for 4 people to be on the phone at once, you wouldn't be able to concentrate at all.

    December 2, 2013 at 4:09 pm |
  222. Abby

I don't think they should. It would be disturbing others peace. You should only be able to take a call if its an emergency. Not be talking about how your boyfriend just dumped you.

    December 2, 2013 at 4:10 pm |
  223. Colby

I think its ok if they talk to their friends and family on the plane. I could just put on headphones and listen to my jams so I don't have to listen to them.

    December 2, 2013 at 4:11 pm |
  224. Anonymous

No because if I want to go to sleep but I can't because someone is being loud talking to someone else.

    December 2, 2013 at 4:12 pm |
  225. arron

I don't think that they should allow it because it could lead to a terrorist attack with them using electronics.

    December 2, 2013 at 4:12 pm |
  226. Syer

I think that you should be able to use your phone but only for a very limited time. Like a couple minutes at tops.

    December 2, 2013 at 4:12 pm |
  227. Grant

I believe that you should be able to call on your cellular devices on a plane but only at regulated times of the flight. For example, about half way through the flight they should allow you to talk on your cellular devices for about 10-30 min.

    December 2, 2013 at 4:13 pm |
  228. Kylie

I think it would really bug me if I was sitting next to someone on a plane that was talking really loud on their phone, but really it doesn't matter weather or not they allow you to use cell phones on the plane because it doesn't affect the plane at all. I don't care if they let you use your cell phone, but I don't want them talking on the phone next to me!

    December 2, 2013 at 4:14 pm |
  229. Madison

I think it should be aloud if your flight gets delayed or on a holiday, but if that isn't the case then I don't think its a very good idea because it could cause something to go wrong in the plane and personally I wouldn't want to sit next to someone who talks really loud because I like to sleep on planes!

    December 2, 2013 at 4:15 pm |
  230. Maddie

This would be very convenient because if there is a family crisis or you need to get a hold of the person that is picking you up because they don't live near the airport, you could call them. There are many situations that you would need to call someone. Maybe, to prevent people being to loud and bothering you, you could bring headphones and some kind of ipod to block out the sound.

    December 2, 2013 at 4:15 pm |
  231. stefanie

I don't think it would be a good idea to allow people to talk on the phone while on the air plane because it could get annoying to others,it may encourage the staff of the plane to be able to do the same, and it might not be safe for anyone.their are many other things you can do to pass the time on a plane like read a book,do job work or school work, the list goes on and on why it is a bad idea and what other things can occupy a person for just a few hours.

    December 2, 2013 at 4:15 pm |
  232. Peter

I think that they should make an room in the plane for the phoning area

    December 2, 2013 at 6:09 pm |
  233. Nick

I believe phoning while flying is bad because it could causedscomfort to the other passengers.

    December 3, 2013 at 10:41 am |
  234. Nick

I think it is a good idea, let's say a person left his/her presentation at the air port he/she could phone a relative or staff to send his presentation to the place he/she was going or if there is a person high jacking the plane the person(with the phone) could call the authorities to tell them about the high jacking and arrest them at the airport.

    December 3, 2013 at 10:45 am |
  235. TeNeil

I think that using a phone on a flight is fine. But I don't think that I could sit beside someone who was on the phone and being loud and annoying.

    December 3, 2013 at 11:50 am |
  236. Andrew

Just imagine. This is your first time flying in an airplane. You sit down and after a couple of minutes someone else sits down beside you. As the airplane takes off and enters the sky, the person gets on their phone. They are very loud and obnoxious and all you wanted was some peace and quiet on your vacation. I would like them to be allowed, but there are too many negative consequences that come with them.

    December 3, 2013 at 11:54 am |
  237. Brent

This shouldn't be allowed. For once, I think we should leave things as is. People can be annoying enough as is, and phone calls on a plane would only exacerbate this. It would be like allowing phone use during movies. It just shouldn't be done to preserve the comfort of wveryone

    December 3, 2013 at 12:03 pm |
  238. Eric

Phones on airplanes should be allowed, but to an extent. if a person is being obnoxious or overly loud while talking on their phones, or if it is somehow interfering with the plane and/or passengers, the flight attendant should have the right to ask the person to stop talking.

    December 3, 2013 at 7:37 pm |
  239. Taylor

I think it's cool that we are doing this, but I don't feel like we really need it. It gets so annoying when a person talks loudly and their obnoxious. Other people can do it but I'm not.

    December 4, 2013 at 11:28 am |
  240. Daniel

I think that there should be phones allowed on airlines, but there would be a different compartment for the people using them and those people should also have to pay a fee.

    December 4, 2013 at 8:12 pm |
  241. doug

    texting yes, talking no!

    December 5, 2013 at 7:32 am |
  242. Joe

Not happnin' any time soon. Texting is one thing, but talking on one's cell will continue to be disallowed.

    December 5, 2013 at 4:49 pm |
  243. Lance

i think that you should be able to talk and text and play games on the plane. its the only way to keep yourself busy.

    December 5, 2013 at 6:06 pm |
  244. lydia

I think talking on the phone while in flight is very dangerous because every oncee in awhile there is going to be a person who forgets to turn there phone on "airplane mode" and that can interfere with the planes radio signals and they plane will have a high risk of crashing and injuring or killing a lot of people

    December 5, 2013 at 9:41 pm |
  245. Ferhad

I think playing games, or soundless activities would be fine, as they don't annoy other passengers. I don't think talking should be permitted though.

    December 6, 2013 at 12:01 am |
  246. Marissa

If it truly does not mess with the planes system and the FCC believes that they are okay to use, than let them use them. If someone next to you is a loud talker you should be a respectful person and just deal. I'm sure there have been times where you have been rowdy or loud and others haven't appreciated it. It is only fair to others that may need to be on a call.

    December 6, 2013 at 10:11 am |
  247. Tristen

I think that using a Cell phone on a plane is fine, if they want to talk on the flight, the can talk on the flight. They paid for it and it is a public place.

    December 6, 2013 at 10:13 am |
  248. Ashley

I think the FCC should not allow people to call while on the airlines. Talking would disturb other passengers that might be tired and want to sleep during the flight. Some people can not control their voice and it would get too loud and disturb many passengers. On the other hand texting should be allowed it is also a way to pass time, and at the same time you wouldn't be disrupting anyone else.

    December 6, 2013 at 10:18 am |
  249. Anna

Talking should be allowed on the airplane. It is a great way to waste time away on a plane ride. There are also situations where you might need to call family or friends, like if they are picking you up at the airport. Although it may be distracting or obnoxious to other passengers, the are ways to black out the sound like headphones. If it becomes to big of a distraction or problem, the flight attendant can always ask the person to lower their voices or to end the call.

    December 6, 2013 at 10:18 am |
  250. Gracey

In-flight phone calls can be loud and obnoxious. However, as long as it has been proven that cell phones do not inference with the plane's mechanisms in any form, I believe quiet uses of the phone should be allowed (texting, etc.) because they are much less likely to affect other passengers.

    December 6, 2013 at 10:19 am |
  251. Jocelyn

To talk on the phone on the plane would be very rude. Some people do not have the ability to control their voice as it is so handing them a call to someone they know would be even worse. Texting to would be fine, and a reasonable way to correspond with someone. Playing games on your phone would be fine to, but not talking on the phone. Some people go on air planes to get away and have a silent plane ride; not have someone blab in their ear for hours at a time. If the FAA does choose to allow this the flight attendants should be required to control the volume at which someone speaks.

    December 6, 2013 at 10:20 am |
  252. Angelique

Cell phones on a plane is fine, your are able to entertain yourself and your children if you have any. But talking on the phone is not the answer. It's rude. No one else needs to know your personal information. The only time I can see it okay talking on a cell phone while on a plane is if something serious were to happen.

    December 6, 2013 at 10:20 am |
  253. Joshua

People should be allowed to talk on their cell phones, but they will need to remember to be courteous and respectful of the people around them. I mean all you need is to use common sense. You don't know how sensitive the people around you might be to sound. They might be used to sleeping with no sound. On the other hand, if someone want's to talk, let them. It's their mouth for a reason. Just suck it up. The flight won't last forever.

    December 6, 2013 at 10:21 am |
  254. Walther

If you're on a plane, there is someone obnoxious; phones would just make this problem worse. Texting is a reasonable, common form of communication, and I don't see a problem with it. People can't control themselves when talking to a friend, it's just natural. Texting is a happy medium.

    December 6, 2013 at 10:26 am |
  255. Jada

I do not think there is a problem if you are watching a movie or something with headphones. But talking, no way. I do not want to hear your gossip, love life, and all that stuff. And I hate when someone is so loud you can't even sleep. They could have phones, but they have to know their are limits.

    December 6, 2013 at 10:27 am |
  256. Julia

Flying can be very boring and most people want something to keep their mind off of how bored they are. I can understand how it might be irritating when you have someone talking on the phone next to you. It is your choice if you want to pay the fee for using your phone on an airplane, and you should be able to do that.

    December 6, 2013 at 10:28 am |
  257. Lincoln

I think that people should not be able to have a phone conversation on the plane. I do think that it would be ok to text on a plane because that is a private thing and wouldn't interfere with other people

    December 6, 2013 at 11:58 am |
  258. Sydney

Texting i would understand because it doesn't effect other passengers but listening to someone else talking the whole time would be extremely annoying. No calling but texting is understandable.

    December 6, 2013 at 12:01 pm |
  259. Jade

I believe talking on your cell phone during your flight would be a nuisance to everyone. This is the time to relax and enjoy others things rather than your technology. Maybe read a book or draw a picture. What's so important that you have to tell someone. Even if they allowed it I think that it should be for emergencies only and there should be a specific area for that.
    Thank You.

    December 6, 2013 at 12:03 pm |
  260. Andre

i think its fine but it has to be on airplane mode

    December 6, 2013 at 2:59 pm |
  261. Sandra

Absolutely not! It is bad enough sitting in the waiting area and listening to the details of everyone's life without having your seatmate discuss, in a loud voice, what to cook for dinner!!! NO, NO, NO.

    December 7, 2013 at 9:24 am |
  262. Thomas

It should've be a problem they can block phone connection from the airplane connection

    December 7, 2013 at 11:11 am |
  263. Kaitlyn

I think that they should allow you to use your cellular phone but, they should have a separate section of the Air-plane for people who would like to call their family/spouse/friends, that way the people who would like to sleep in peace, or read could have a silent environment to do so.

    December 7, 2013 at 7:46 pm |
  264. Olivia

I personally think phone calls on planes is a really bad idea. On most flights, most passengers want to sleep or rest during airtime. Calls would disturb passengers big time; but, I can see no problem with texting.
