Shutting Down during Takeoff and Landing

When I flew out to the Student Television Network convention a few weeks ago, I remember the flight attendants telling us to turn off all electronics during takeoff and landing.  (We could turn 'em back on when we'd reached 10,000 feet.)  Most airlines have this rule, but the FAA is considering whether it's needed.

On Thursday, you'll hear some arguments for keeping the rule in place - and some for getting rid of it.  Where do you stand?

I really do not see why this is necessary. It seems like it it just a way to get Americans off of their cellphones.

I personally think that it matters. I mean, if you could save you life by turning off your electronics, why not? Even if it matters to some, others will care and still turn on their electronics. People know that texting and driving could possibly be dangerous but they still do it. Its like the same thing.

I do not think its good to have them do this because i love electronics and cant survive without them. But i could undrestand where they might not want people to do this. So i do not and want them to do this and want them to do this to planes.

I think it would be very important to safety if it ment paying atention to the pilot

I'd rather be safe than sorry..... If 15 minutes without my handheld device means that I will have a safe flight, I'm willing to wait.

I think that if it will help with safety than it's worth doing so I would shut off my electronics after takeoff.

I believe that the rules are perfectly fine because safety comes first. If you're not paying attention and a real accident happens, you don't know what to do because the aircrafts are different. If you just shut off for a while, it's worth it. If you use your cell phone and it interfers with the connection, it not only causes death, but you also caused death for others that were innocent.

I think it might be a good idea, but I also think people should be weighed with their luggage so they won't be embarrassed about their weight

It doesn't really matter to me. As long as I can turn them back on. I enjoy the take off and landing so I don't see why it matters.

I think they shuld let you tern your phones back on after you take off as long as you tern them back off when you land.

I think passengers should have the right to use electronics during mid-flight. If you're on a fifteen hour flight and your seat doesn't have a television, you need something to do. You should have to agree to listen to the announcements. Also, some people might get plane sick. My favorite airlines, Emirates, Lufthansa, and JetBlue, just to name a few, all let passengers use electronic devices during mid-flight, and there haven't been many problems in my experience. If you have headphones to listen to the television, you can hear the announcements. This would be a bad rule if the FAA makes the rule.

Well I think that it isn't a big deal to turn of electronics landing or taking flight. You turn it off then on easy!

I think they should not charge more for being heavy because it can be enbaresing to be wieghed .Plus It is not fare to people with thiroid prolblem. I am speaking as a fat person. Also if the person behind you see your whieght thay might horas you.

I think that if there were no reason for this rule, they never would have put it into effect in the first place. It obviously has potential to hinder takeoff, and we should not jepordize our safety.

I think that it is fine that you have to turn off your electronics during takeoff and landing. It enforces your safety and is not much; it's only about 5 or 10 minutes. Turning off your electronics is a small price to pay for your safety.

Before anything is done, they should make sure its one hundred percent safe, thats rescing hundreds of peoples lives and they should even be put in danger from something so small like that.

  17. Sofi

I think that they should NOT let electronics on airlines because the passengers might get distracted during important parts of the flight. That could get very dangerous.

  18. Monique

I'm sorry anti-electronics people: Many people have tablets or phones or whatever. It's how we communicate and have fun. Telling a bunch of people to turn off their electronics is not going to work: most modern Americans are attached to them. And if there's no proven evidence that affects the flight I wouldn't take immediate action, FAA.

Electronics should remain off during flights because of the safety implications they may cause. Ultimately, safety should be weighed more than convenience.

i think we should not take turning our electronic devices off in a bad way. It's not really a hassle for me to turn off my phone on the airplane. plus its better to be safe than sorry.

    March 27, 2013 at 9:53 pm |
  21. Kayla

I really don't care. I think it is better to shut the electronics because people need to spend less time on phones and tablets. this gives them a time to do something new.

    March 27, 2013 at 9:59 pm |
  22. Avery

I think shutting down devices during take off and landing is a great idea. If it is to get the peoples' attention, then I would turn off my device, even if it wasn't required. The problem is when people are asked a question, or someone is talking to them, it takes them a while to respond. Why is that? Because they are too busy on the smart phones and tablets.

    March 27, 2013 at 10:03 pm |
  23. Aaron

It is not a good idea to have electronics on because if you are listening to music on headphones or watching video, you wouldn't hear the announcement and wouldn't know what to do.

I think you should be allowed to use electronics because it can get very boring on a plane without them. I want to be safe but I think the FAA should really do experiments find out if electronics are not safe because I really want to play on them on planes.

When the FAA tells us to turn off our electronics it is to protect US. It is a great price to pay for your safty and all the other passengers aboard.

The FAA is trying to protect US. The little hassle you pay is great if you want your safty and others aboard the plane.

I think that if the pilots get the ability to use tablets and electronics, then passengers should have the freedom and privilege to use their devices too.

I am training to become a pilot. The regulation by the FAA is true saying that devices must be shut off for take off and landing. What the passengers could do in the air above 10,000 feet is simply turn their device to airplane mode. This mode does not inter fear with the plane.

    March 28, 2013 at 6:54 am |
  36. Shamus

It is a good idea to have shut-down your iPhone, IPad, computer, ect. It is very important that you are attentive during the safety demonstration, take-off and landing.

I think that we should be able to have electronics out during to the reason that some of the magazine's that are provided for us aren't really necessarily to our likes. I would like to read a book on my kindle!

I think that electronics should be our choice, if we want to use them or not on the plane. I mean, if electronics are a problem, then why are there little television screens in planes?

    March 28, 2013 at 7:18 am |
  42. Ben

Well, I think it would be worth it to unplug/turn off your electronics for just a few minutes for better safety during takeoff.

I don't mind shutting off my tablet or phone during take off and landing as long as I can do what I want with it during the rest of the trip. Also if the flight attendents need our attention we should stop what we are doing and give them our full attention.

People are becoming lazy. Do we really need to play one little game to put the whole airplane in jeopardy?Just turn off your electronics for taking off and landing, its not like they are asking them to throw phones and tablets out of the window. Its really not that hard to press a power button for a few seconds and wait a few minutes before having to press the button to turn it on again. We are making it sound as if it is so much work.

    March 28, 2013 at 8:54 am |

I don't see why, unless if it harms the electronic device.

I think people should have to turn off their electronics during take off and landing because it can cause a wreck.

Having electronics on may help people that are nervous to fly relax.

    March 28, 2013 at 9:41 am |
  52. Faustina

Honestly, I think people could spare a moment to turn off their electronics and listen to the pilot. People have so many other chances to be on their electronics that I don't see why it would be a problem. Taking this small measure of safety can make all the difference in the long run.

    March 28, 2013 at 9:45 am |
  53. Nicholas

I think devices should be left on because I get bored on the plane.

If you have to shut down your electronics for 10 minutes so take off and landing is safer, then there is no problem. By having it on, not only are you endangering your own life but other passangers on the plane.

    March 28, 2013 at 10:18 am |

No i do not have a problem with turning my phone off while we take off and land because it could cause problems with the plane. I would like to stay safe so i will just turn my phone off until we get to where we need to be anyways you really dont need your phone on the plane anyways.

I don’t think that keeping your electronics off for a few minutes will be a big deal. It’s not like you won’t be able to use them eventually. If I wanted to ensure my own safety, I would definitely take precaution.

I honestly don’t see what the big deal is. You can just turn your electronic device for about five minutes to listen what they have to say, have some safety, just relax for moment before going back on your phone. There shouldn’t be so much controversy on it, if your that addicted to your device to not be able to stop what your doing for a few minutes, then just don’t travel by plane and find a new form of transformation that would allow you to go on your device at all times.

    March 28, 2013 at 10:24 am |

I think the rule about the cell phones and electronics being turned off on take off and landing should be kept because it has been the rule for a long time and it should not be taken away.

  64. Summer

Being from England I have been on many many planes ride to America and back. I have been through take off and landing so many times I can’t even begin to count. It’s never been a problem to not have my IPod/phone on for 45 minutes of a plane ride. There are plenty of other things to do like talk, read, play card games or just watch the land get smaller or larger as you take off or land. It’s not that big of a price to pay that could potentially save your life.

I agree with this rule because using an electronic device is very distracting for some people. If the plane ever were to crash during takeoff or landing, (when most crashes accur) most people would be extremely hurt, injured, or even killed. These rules are in place for the safety of the passengers, not to be mean and not let you play Fruit Ninja for the first and last half hour of the flight.

    March 28, 2013 at 10:36 am |

I think it’s a good idea to turn off cell phones and electronics during take off because there were electronics leaked to problems on airplanes.

However, is it so hard to turn it off for 5 or 10 minutes? Would you rather become severly hurt or just spend 5 to 10 minutes without your electronics?

  71. Ajak

This is proof that society is addicted to their phones/electronics. I don't understand how people function at their jobs if they cant be away from their electronics for this short amount of time.

    March 28, 2013 at 10:41 am |
  72. Tiffany

I think while it is important for technology to be turned off during flights, it can create dissension among passengers who feel a "need" to use technology. At the same time, technology, like a cell phone, if turned on, could possibly in an emergency, save someone's life.

    March 28, 2013 at 10:43 am |

I think you should turn off the electronics because it could interfere with the planes engines and could cause a major crash.

    March 28, 2013 at 10:53 am |
  77. Maggie

I think it is a good idea because, I have heard that when you have your electronics out during takeoff and landing it can interfere with the tower that the pilot talks to, and if there is an emergency and you can't connect with the tower you will not be able to get any help so whatever has happened could get worse.

Yes, I care electronics are a really big part of my life. With no electronics I would die!!! They are amazingly awesome with a side of coolness.!! If we couldn't play with electronics my life would be over.

    March 28, 2013 at 11:00 am |
  82. GILLIAN

I think you should turn off electronics because it would mess up the engines because when your in the planes satellites could interfere with the engines and it will crash and a lot of people could die or get hurt bad.

    March 28, 2013 at 11:01 am |
  83. jeannine

I do care, because if you have headphones on and there is an important announcement, you might not hear it and get seriously hurt.

    March 28, 2013 at 11:03 am |
  84. Priscilla

It's really not such a big deal to turn electronics off, especially when you consider the importance of not only your, but other people's safety- after all, if it's entertainment you're concerned about, there's books, drawing, origami, and (one of the most fun) introducing yourself to other passengers, and seeing if they're just as crazy as you are! Plus, looking out the window at the clouds you could touch if there wasn't a wall in between can really put you in awe at God's creation.

    March 28, 2013 at 11:13 am |
  85. Gavin

I am on vacation while I watch this and leaving today, I personaly don't care that I am going to have to turn off my device for 15 minutes because it is a small price to pay to make the flight safer.

    March 28, 2013 at 11:18 am |
  86. Zachary

I say you should because the take off and landing are the most dangerous. People could activate a bomb using their phone during take off and landing.

    March 28, 2013 at 11:24 am |
  87. Maddie

I think it would be the safest to have people shut their phones off durring a flight.

    March 28, 2013 at 11:40 am |

I think that it should be a law that you have to shut off your devices while taking off and landing ,because that is only a small price to pay. That might even mean your life.

    March 28, 2013 at 11:40 am |
  89. Jasmine

I think they should allow cell phones on the plane because if there is an emergency with one of the passengers they have a way to contact family or friends.

    March 28, 2013 at 11:41 am |
  90. Derek

I really don't care as long as during the flight, I can use them.

    March 28, 2013 at 11:45 am |
  91. Brianna

I honestly think that they should keep the rule, but only if they need it. If people don't need to shut off any cellular devices because it won't affect anything to the airplane, then the rules shouldn't be needed.

    March 28, 2013 at 11:48 am |
  92. Yessica

I think that we should turn off electronic devices cause it could be dangerous cause you might not pay attention when the conductor says something and you might not of heard what he said cause you were on your device.

    March 28, 2013 at 11:49 am |
  93. Kodi

i think that shutting off electronics isnt that big of a deal i mean if something goes wrong your going to know its not like the planes engines stop working and your just gonna keep on messing around on your laptop or phone...

Turning your electronics off is really not that big of a deal. This wouldn’t be a problem a couple years ago, being able to turn them back on is a privilege they shouldn’t allow them on at all. The electronics can interfere with the radios incase of an emergency

    March 28, 2013 at 11:51 am |
  98. Joseph

I don’t really mind about turning off my electronic devices because you can turn them back on when you’re cruising. So you can still read a magazine on your iPad just can’t go online. Just make sure that you turn them off when you’re landing or taking off.

    March 28, 2013 at 11:51 am |
  99. Matthew

I think that electronics should be turned off during takeoff and landing. Nothing is more important than safety and it only takes about ten minuets to take off or land. I think people can wait that long without there electronics.

I think if it keeps us save from dyeing its ok we all can live with out are phones 2 to 6 hours you can call or txt who ever before the trip and after the trip what I think we should do.

I am with the rule for shutting your electronics off during take-off and when you land. Because if you are playing on you electronic while they are going over the rules then you never know during the flight something could happen and you wouldn’t know what to do. Shutting off your electronics when you take off and when you land is a good thing it only takes up 10-20 minutes of your time. It’s okay. You will live. This rule is a great idea because you never know what will happen during a flight.

  107. gabe

i believe we should not cause im a kid and you get bord on trips so you have to bring a electronic so i dont think that you should not

    March 28, 2013 at 11:58 am |
  108. Lance

I stand for keeping the rule in place.

    March 28, 2013 at 11:58 am |

    March 28, 2013 at 11:59 am |
  110. Ally

I think that you should turn off electronics on the plane because it could mess up your plane that you are riding on and a lot of people could get very hurt. There should be rules on each plane that you should turn off your electronics.

    March 28, 2013 at 11:59 am |
  111. steven

I think the rule should not stay. The reason why is because I don't want to have to stop playing video games if I ever go on a plane

    March 28, 2013 at 11:59 am |

i think we should get to have electronics

When I remember the flight attendants telling us to turn off all electronics during takeoff and landing. Think that is a good idea for the safety in the plan because we just turn off electronics during in few minutes because it may had some thing not safe when they give you attentions about turn off electronics

    March 28, 2013 at 12:00 pm |
  114. Kyleigh

I think that this Rule should stay the way it is. Where no one on the plane can use any electronic Device before take off and Landing because that is that time were the Captain and flight audients explain all the rules and safety regulations. People can wait to use there Electronics until the plane as taken off and Landed.

    March 28, 2013 at 12:01 pm |

UM, i think we should be able to because when will we know a plane gose?

once someone in my family used a smart phone on a plane and a stwertess or what ever it is called saw him and the person took his phone and he never got it back. I think you shod not bring phones on the plane

    March 28, 2013 at 12:02 pm |
  117. Sarah

I think they should not get rid of this rule, the reason being is that I think that passengers should be listening at takeoff and landing just incase they have any important information to tell the passenger.

    March 28, 2013 at 12:04 pm |
  118. hailey

i think they don't need them if the studertest come with the water and they spill the water on the tv it will be broken

    March 28, 2013 at 12:05 pm |
  119. jacob

it would probably be better to not have electronics on during landing and take off, because it might mess up the connection, and it would be better for the plane to not get messed up.so that everyone in the plane would be safe.

    March 28, 2013 at 12:06 pm |
  120. London

I would rather turn off my electronics for a few minutes, than to not turn them off, and not land safely. Though if it didn't interfere in the performance of the plane I would be happier to keep my electronics on.

    March 28, 2013 at 12:08 pm |
  121. Megan

I think we should turn all cell phones off if the pilot tells us to. If you want to be safe listen to the person who got the job and knows what to do. If it interferes with the pilot he should have the voice to tell you to turn them off.

    March 28, 2013 at 12:09 pm |
  122. Megan

I think that we should shut off electronics during take off and landing because no one needs their phone 24/7.

    March 28, 2013 at 12:09 pm |
  123. Emma

the rule should stay, after all if it doesn't then people are risking death for their's and others lives.

    March 28, 2013 at 12:09 pm |
  124. Carter

I think that you can wait 5 to 20 minuets without a computer or phone. Only for takeoff and landing you don't need it.

    March 28, 2013 at 12:09 pm |
  125. Hope

I think it is unsafe to have electronics turned on in an airplane during take off and landing because it might effect the take off and the landing.

    March 28, 2013 at 12:09 pm |
  126. Sam

I think there should be a ban with electronics on a airplane during takeoff and landing. Because it might affect the possibility of the pilot and the air Air Traffic Controller.

    March 28, 2013 at 12:10 pm |
  127. Macy

I think all passengers should turn of all electronics for their own sake and listen to the flight attendants who are only trying to keep you safe.

    March 28, 2013 at 12:10 pm |
  128. Hannah

I think we should not be allowed to have electronics on planes because it might interfere with the radio waves. If you want time to FLY take a nap.

    March 28, 2013 at 12:10 pm |
  129. Brooke

I know that some people don't like turning off their electronics for very long, me I don't mind I would like to have a safe take off and landing. I think people should just turn the electronics off for a few minutes, it won't hurt anything.

I think that phones and tablets should be powered off at take off and landing. Because it will interfere with the tower resulting in people will be hurt, or killed

    March 28, 2013 at 12:11 pm |
  131. Kristy

I think that they should stay with that rule, because kids get really bored on the planes and they can just go on there parents phones. But if kids get to bored they can start kicking the seats.

    March 28, 2013 at 12:14 pm |
  132. Jacob

I see what they mean, it doesn't bother me. I mean it shouldn't be a problem. It's only 5 minutes, what's the big deal?

  133. Cooper

When I flew out to the Student Television Network convention a few weeks ago, I remember the flight attendants telling us to turn off all electronics during takeoff and landing. (We could turn 'em back on when we'd reached 10,000 feet.) Most airlines have this rule, but the FAA is considering whether it's needed, its a good idea

If it's to keep us safe it shoud still be there i mean you only have to turn in off when your take off and land.... that's not that long of a time

    March 28, 2013 at 12:34 pm |
  136. Noelia

I think she should be ablee to have our electronics on becuase what if your takinga really long flight and want to contact a relative oe friend or if you want to play games on your tablet or phone to keep you from getting bored.

    March 28, 2013 at 12:35 pm |
  137. Tyler

people should shut off their eletronics for safety reasons like the phones signals getting in the radio connection with the plane.

    March 28, 2013 at 12:35 pm |

It dosen't matter the flight is boring so you need

i strongly disagree. I would rather listen to my parent lecture me about how they cant stand that i am allergic to, or there tailor than to have to flee the plane or go to the hospital.

they said only 15 minutes at take-off and landing. not the hole thing. after the pilot says its ok, everyone can go back to their electronics.

      March 29, 2013 at 12:37 am |
  141. Gabby

I think they should keep the rule in place because if the electronics mess up the stuff in the airplane you could die.

    March 28, 2013 at 12:36 pm |
  142. Megan

I think that if we are told to by a person who has a job where they know what they are doing in that situation(pilot, co-pilot, stewardess, steward, etc.) we should listen to them and turn off our electronics, it won't kill us to turn it off for a few minutes. Though the people who work there should have to find out about if it will mess up the plane because if not, there should be no reason to turn them off.

Most smartphones have airplane mode now. It would be sufficient to use that instead of turning off the phone completely.

    March 28, 2013 at 12:41 pm |
  147. Markus

No, I don't think that there is a problem with using cellphones on airplanes for texting and browsing using cellular. However phone calls should be banned or limited because its highly disturbing to other passengers.

    March 28, 2013 at 12:48 pm |
  148. Donavan

If it helps with the take off and landing they should only be shut of for that time.

    March 28, 2013 at 12:50 pm |
  149. Irene

I personally think that electronics should be on planes because people can keep in contact with family or friends to tell then there safe and when the pilots are talking the people would listen because they want to know the update about whats happening but unless electronics mess up the planes then electronics shouldn't be allowed on the planes and if the plane crashes it might be the electronic

    March 28, 2013 at 1:00 pm |

whats the point in shutting off your phone if you just going to turn it back on and the shut it off again when you land, like in the pilots area they have a bunch of electronics up there and it never effect the plan from take off or landing, if you have to get on two flights you will just be draining your battery from turning it off and on all the time so i think they should just let us keep our phones on.

    March 28, 2013 at 1:26 pm |

    March 28, 2013 at 1:31 pm |
  154. Tom

I think that this is a good idea because electronics interfear with the plane's electrical system. The plane could go out of control and could crash at any moment. that means that it would be a good idea to wait and just in case put your phone on air plane mode.

    March 28, 2013 at 1:31 pm |
  155. Baylee

I think that they should keep the rule because if somebody didn't turn off their electronic device and the plane wrecked on take off or landing it would be bad. It should be a rule that should be taken seriously.

What i think of turning off devices is ok for me but if it is not good for the airplanes then i think they should turn off their phones and devices.

    March 28, 2013 at 1:33 pm |

i think that is not a good idea becuase people ccan have the privalege to use there eletronics like ipad ipods or there phone they say that you may not be paying attention when they are going to land or take off but they have tv s so that is a problem cause they say you cant have eletronics but the tv is an eletronic so people should be able to have there eletronics.

If there going to take the rule out then they should definetly do some testing befor a real flight and see what happens.

    March 28, 2013 at 1:38 pm |
  159. Trevor

I don't know why they shokdn't be able to. All the years that flights have been going on and people have been on there phones, almost nothing happens. If it was somehting they really nedded to know, texting on there phone is not going to affect the way they here what the pilot has to say,

    March 28, 2013 at 1:39 pm |
  160. Danielle

I feel that if having electronics on after you've reached 10,000 feet hasn't caused any accidents before, then it is okay to have them on. If, however, it was proved that having an electronic on would cause something to happen, they should be off at all times.

    March 28, 2013 at 1:40 pm |
  161. Ryan

I think that they should keep this rule because it is a small price to pay for everyone's saftey, including your own. If shutting down means that ther is a less likely chance of getting killed, then it should still be a rule for ALL airlines and should not be taken away.

    March 28, 2013 at 1:40 pm |
  162. Kailey

When it comes to shutting down your cell phones for only a few minutes at take off and landing, I don’t really think it’s a big deal. It only takes a few seconds and isn’t too hard to do. In my opinion, they should just keep it the way it is because it doesn’t hurt anyone.

    March 28, 2013 at 1:40 pm |
  163. Robbie

I think that we should have to shut our phones down. I've been on airplanes many times and even when peoples phones or tablets are shut off they still don't pay attention to what others are saying. Also most flight attendents don't pay attention to people who do or don't have their phones or any other electronic.

    March 28, 2013 at 1:40 pm |
  164. Trevor

I don't know why they shouldn't be able to. All the years that flights have been going on and people have been on there phones, almost nothing happens. If it was somehting they really nedded to know, texting on there phone is not going to affect the way they hear what the pilot has to say,

    March 28, 2013 at 1:41 pm |
  165. Hannah

I think that there should be testing done to see if cell phones or electronics’ affect the airplane. If it doesn’t then anyone who rides an airplane should be able to have their cell phone or electronic.

    March 28, 2013 at 1:41 pm |
  166. Hannah

Considering the amount of technology that is on a plane such as televisions and pilots equipment, we should be able to have our technology on too.

    March 28, 2013 at 1:41 pm |
  167. Emerson

If it disrupts flight then keep it, but I think its more of a safety precaution so when the flight attendant starts giving instructions or an anouncement comes on you're not distracted.

    March 28, 2013 at 1:44 pm |
  168. Kelsi

I feel the sacrifice is worth the safety. The small amount of no electronic time is not a big deal when it comes to the safety of yourself as well as the safety of those around you. I feel the rule might not be needed but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

    March 28, 2013 at 1:55 pm |
  169. manie

People should turn there phones off because, what if the phones messed with the plane while they are in the air. When the airplane reaches a serten hight then you can turn ur phone on.

    March 28, 2013 at 1:58 pm |
  170. Adam

I enjoy technology considerably; however, if it is a matter of safety, I believe electronics should be turned off when required. Even if there is only the smallest of chances that they will interfere, that's still a chance.

    March 28, 2013 at 2:08 pm |
  171. Michelle

I think it doesn’t matter if you have you’re electronics turned on during a flight. Your own devices aren’t involved in the airplane’s technology.

    March 28, 2013 at 2:13 pm |
  172. Jarod

I think that we should put our devices away during landing because it distracts us and landing can be very dangerous. So you have to take precautions.

    March 28, 2013 at 2:21 pm |
  173. Brian

I think for now it's a good idea, but with how technology is advancing they should come up with software that can support the plane while passengers use their phones with full access.

    March 28, 2013 at 2:26 pm |
  174. Charles

I think that we should shut down electronics because, if your on a certain app, that could interfere with the radio waves coming from ATC to the plane.

    March 28, 2013 at 2:44 pm |
  175. Vivian

Even though no one knows for sure if it effects it or not – I still would want to be safe, and non distracted for the instructions and turn off my electronics. Just in case.

    March 28, 2013 at 2:56 pm |
  176. Nick

I think the FAA should let people have electronic device out and on.

    March 28, 2013 at 2:59 pm |
  177. Liam

Since it only takes about 28 minutes tops till you are aloud to use your phone I have no problem with it, but when you think about it both of the twin towers were hit withing 8 minutes of each other, so what if you are about to take off and something critical occurs to your family. Is the flight attendent supposed to make you hang up, and not get any details. But what if planes used cellular communication, phones don't have interference with each other. I'm just saying, maybe its time for a change!

    March 28, 2013 at 3:20 pm |
  178. Hannah..

I don't know much about planes, but I don't think it would cause a plane to have problems. I think its fine if you use electronics during the whole plane ride.

    March 28, 2013 at 3:25 pm |
  179. Morgan

I think that the rule should stay. Why risk the lives of hundreds of people on a plane if they aren't positive that electronics with mess with the planes function?

    March 28, 2013 at 3:26 pm |
  180. Taylor

I think we should keep the rule. Even if it doesn't mess with the airplane it is important to listen to the airplane pilots at those times. It is also not that difficult just to turn off your electronics.

    March 28, 2013 at 3:26 pm |
  181. Sean

I think they shouldn't, because why would it even matter. Its not like something bad is gonna happen during take off.

    March 28, 2013 at 3:26 pm |
  182. shayne

I think that you sould shutdown your phone during a flight because if it can save lives you souldent take the chance

    March 28, 2013 at 3:27 pm |
  183. Antoinette

I could honestly care less if I have to turn off my device for landing and take off. Its such a small price to pay for extra safety, why not pay it? I also agree that having electronic devices on is a distraction.

    March 28, 2013 at 3:28 pm |
  184. Kenna

I think that what ever they say is safe should be fallowed, it could mean life or death.

    March 28, 2013 at 3:39 pm |
  185. Ammon

Let 'em keep it on. It doesn't interfere with the plane's preformance and if the flight attendants really need their attention, they could use the intercom.

    March 28, 2013 at 3:39 pm |
  186. Maha

I don't see anything wrong with it, because safety is way more important than any kind of electronic device.

    March 28, 2013 at 3:45 pm |
  187. Andy

No i do not think it is nessescary. I can just turn my ipad on airplane mode and it won`tr interfer with the communication.

    March 28, 2013 at 4:30 pm |
  188. Kate

During takeoff and landing electronics should be turned off. During that time I'm usually reading a book or looking out the window.

    March 28, 2013 at 4:38 pm |
  189. Derek

I think that we shouldn't need to because if we really needed to they would check. Also we all know someone some time forgot to shut it down but it didn't affect the plane only when they know it was on.

    March 28, 2013 at 5:07 pm |
  190. Avery

I think people should be able to keep their electronics on. I mean does it affect anything?

    March 28, 2013 at 5:41 pm |
  191. Liv

I don't think it is a problem if they keep that rule if it means potentially safer flights because it only lasts for a few minutes and there are plenty of other things to do during that time period.

    March 28, 2013 at 5:47 pm |

I think that people should turn off there phone, just do it for your safety. Cause I am sure if your parents or children hear your hurt or dead, I think you would not like them to hear them cry. So ya i think you should turn off your phone when you are taking off and landing. 🙂

    March 28, 2013 at 6:31 pm |

Safety first! If there is even a chance that the use of these devices might compromise safety, the rule should stay in place. I can wait a few minutes before using any electronic equipment.

    March 28, 2013 at 6:35 pm |
  197. Kaya

In my opinion, I believe that we should keep the rule that you should shut down all electronics because a piece inside of your device interacts with the plain causing it to lose its "energy" and "shut down", which could be dangerous to anyone on the plain.

    March 28, 2013 at 6:40 pm |
  198. johanna

when your turn on any of your electronics, it sends out an electronic signal. This electronic signal can be picked up by the instruments a pilot uses for take off and landing. If we have inaccurate measurements during these crucial times, chances are the plane will crash.

    March 28, 2013 at 6:52 pm |
  199. hilda

I don't think it matters like when do you see a plane crash happened because of electronics

    March 28, 2013 at 6:58 pm |
  200. Rachel

I've recently been on a plane and the flight attendents forced my brother with autism to turn off his DS. I don't believe electronics have any effect on the plane and it wasn't necessary for them to cause my brother to cry and yell the five hour trip.

    March 28, 2013 at 7:10 pm |
  201. Elijah

Shutting down your device is a very small price to pay. If there is even a small risk of malfunction because of devices being on, devices should be turned off.

    March 28, 2013 at 7:31 pm |
  202. Meghan

I definitely feel that phones should be shut down during takeoff and landing. It's not even for a long time, and it could save your life and the lives of those around you. After all, better safe than sorry.

    March 28, 2013 at 7:45 pm |
  203. Kai

I think that now we have more efficient airplanes that have higher security and if the pilots can use tablets then why can't we. Also we never now who is bad and who is good.

  204. jessica

if we could use are devices during takeoff and landing we might endanger the flight, or not hear important safety instructions. its only for like 15 minutes!! 15 minutes for your life. safety before fun.

I think that rule SHOULD be kept because it is extremely that you pay attention.People can get distracted and IGNORE what the person is saying. It MIGHT just save your life

it really affects me because what if one of my family members gets hurt or needs my help i could call or text them back.

I agree. I wouldn't want to be the one messing up the flight. Plus, all we do on our phones are text, play apps, or listen to music. That can wait.

I think that the rule should stay in effect because if you take it away the electronics can interfere with the airplanes radio. Then the pilots could not know important details and could lead to fatal injuries.

it is important to pay attention to the safety presentation, wether you have flown 100 times or 1 time. One way to make people do that is to turn off your electronics.

I think that this rule should be enforced because not only could electronics mess with airplane technology, but electronics on during takeoff could spark a new way of terrorism, such as hacking into the airplane's technology and making something malfunction.

I think that people should get to have electronics on plant trips. People use nooks, phones, IPads iPods and other things to keep entertain. And with most products people can use an airplane mode.

I can understand why they would ask you to turn off your electronics because it is a good way to get you to listen to your pilot. Also, the electronics may play around with the gear and make the plane crash. I can go without an I-pod or phone for 10-15 minutes!

    March 29, 2013 at 12:30 am |
  213. Brody

I think your electronics should be turned off during takeoff and landing.

I understand the need to have everyones attention during important take off and landing instructions. If you think it is wrong for them to expect you to unplug your headphone and turn off your phone just long enough for them to give you information that just might save your life them i dont know what else to tell you other than your putting your phone ahead of your life. By not knowing the information given at the take off and landing you could be threatening not only your life bu tthe lives of everyone else around you.

I think shutting down electronic devices is a good idea because I have not heard of the accidents caused by electronic waves. I am concerned of the unexpected accidents to happen when I turn on my devices.

  216. Heather

I think that further testing should definitely be done, but at this point in time, I think that shutting down is important; if not for the "interference issue", then for the "attention aspect".

Shutting down our electronic devices for a few seconds before and after the flight is not going to kill anybody. With the TVs on airplanes today, I rarely ever use my personal devices anyway.

I think safety comes before mobile games and internet.Passengers should be forced to turn their mobile devices off when entering the plane.

    March 29, 2013 at 7:54 am |
  219. Catie

I think that it a great idea to turn cells off when taking off and landing, but when the plane is in flight you should be able to use them to read or play games.

I understand that they want us to be safe, but we are in the polits hands. If they are able to use tablets, we should be able to use our elctronics. I normally don't fly in a plane, but if we did we would need our electronics, because my brother would end up causing havic. If anything the pilots tablets are going to mess up the plane.

I think it is necessary because what if it did somehow interfere with the airplane's takeoff/landing? It is better to be safe than sorry.

I believe that cellular devices should be powered off because it's not that big of a deal to turn off a cell phone or anything for a couple of minutes. Plus, safety first.

    March 29, 2013 at 12:00 pm |
  223. Chloe

I think that passengers should have to turn off their cell phones during takeoff/landing because there is a possibility that it could cause miscommunication and lead the plane into danger. It is better to be safe than sorry in my opinion.

  224. Paige

Honestly I think that the whole "turning off electronics" rule is a great idea. It's a great safety caution. I would rather turn them off than risk my life. It's kind of a no brainier if you think about it.

If it is honestly true that there is a piece in your electronic device that will interact with the plane and cause it to lose energy, the we should not be able to have the electronics on the plane; but if it is not true, then i think it would be ok for people to have their phone because it may be exciting for them, it could be there first time or something; they'd have a right to be happy(:

i think its a great idea. it will save alot of lives and keep people safe. and maby help people becomw better drivers.

  227. Kora

I think devices should not be allowed on planes. I think people should do this for their safety and the safety of others, there is a piece of your device that can mess with the plane and cause the plane to lose energy.

  228. kaitlin

In my opinion i feel that we should still keep this rule. then again it is a sefety caution and I rather be safe then having my device on .

  229. Johnathon

I could see how thi would be badat some points butif the pilots can use there devices i the cockpit we should be able to ours in our seats.

    March 29, 2013 at 4:23 pm |
  230. John

They do that baecause if they are on the connction between the pilots and the control tower will mess it up so they cant talk to them that is why they do that

    March 29, 2013 at 7:11 pm |
  231. Amanda

I think that it is important to shut down, or at least turn your electronics on sleep so that your total attention to the flight attendents when they explain the safety rules. It may also compromise the safety of the aircraft if you leave your electronics on. Would you rather have your social life at stake or your life at stake?

    March 29, 2013 at 9:41 pm |
  232. Stephanie

I don't see how it helps, but I don't see how it hurts either. But I think its still good to listen to the government.

  233. Karina

If it's for yours safety, then yes please, but if not then sure it'll be nice to have it a little longer. But honestly it saves my game's life/battery for the long trip.

  234. Maycie

I think passengers should be allowed to have electronics, but not the pilots or flight attendants. The employees need to be on task and be paying attention to what they supposed to be doing for the passengers safety. But if people are going to compromise their safety for an electronic device, the rule should stay.

  235. Bailey

It is a good idea for people to have to shut off their phones during take off and landing. If there was something important the pilot needed to tell the passengers but they were all on their phones something could go wrong.people can live for 15 minutes with out their phones on. I recently went on a plane to Chicago and they had us power down when we were taking off and landing, I was fine with it. If it meant my safety then i would listen to them.

    March 30, 2013 at 2:02 pm |
  236. Arturo

I agree with them. You can live without one a whole flight. Its not going to kill someone if not in use. I mean is it worth 1,000 people life if you can use a device? The answer is clearly no and I support them 100%

    March 30, 2013 at 4:07 pm |
  237. Madison

I always thought that the reason we turned off electronics was so the signals wouldn't interfer with the plane or something, but if it doesn't, then I would say get rid of the rule.

    March 30, 2013 at 7:31 pm |
  238. Laura

I would rather be safe than sorry plus not having your electronics in front of you would give you more time to get to know who you are sitting next to on the plane

it's a lack of information why we should do that.
if it give more information why we should,it's my pleasure to follow it.
