What Could You Give Up?

It's gotta be something difficult to go without, so vegetables or dodgeball don't count.

While we were talking about Lent in Thursday's show, we started thinking about things we could reluctantly (but realistically) give up.  Steak would be a tough one for me, but I know I could do it.  Texting would be tougher - not sure I could commit to that one.

Whether or not you celebrate Lent, what's something you enjoy that you think you could live without for 40 days?

Giving up something means alot. I honestly would give up something that i enjoy, but not too deep like skiing, which i LOVE!. My religion teacher, Pam gave us rice bowls to collect money. I am putting all of the change i find, and am giving all of my money in my piggy bank. Its great to know that the money i give is helping kids in africa that dont have enough money to barely even live.

Even though I do not celebrate Lent, I think I would give up texting or listening to music on my iPod. It would be exteremely hard for me because I listen to my music on the bus, in the car, while doing homework, while waliking my dog, etc. I always text when I can get ahold of one of my friends so that wouldn't be very easy either.

I think texting and television (even television on TV sites like Netflix) would be difficult to give up, but would definatly be worth it. Television would be more difficult then texting though, especially now that Survivor is back on!

    February 13, 2013 at 11:47 pm |

Maybe try texting. Text for emergencies, like if you need to text your parents, but don't go off on conversation with your friends. Good luck!

If I had to give up something for Lent, it would be my favorite books, everything related to technology, and my freedom to do what I want. From personal experience I can say that it's super hard to give up everything that you like to do. I can say this because once to make sure I passed my test, my parents wouldn't let me go on any electronics unless for homework, and didn't let me do anything fun. I was basically cut off from technology, and the rest of the world!

Some things that would be hard for me to sacrifice would be screen time, dessert, fun snack (such as gummies, crackers, etc), books, free time, board and card games, art, favorite activities, and more. There are some things that I would like to give up that don't mean a lot to me (like homework) but the point of this holiday is to give something up that does mean a lot to you so you can reflect on the biggest sacrifice that was made (the death of Jesus Christ). The thing I ended up sacrificing was my fun snack and I am going to miss it. :)

If I did the tradition of Lent, I would give up Dr. Pepper for forty days. I know it would be very hard for me, but I would do it. All the sugar and caffeine is not good for you. It's hard enough right now, but if I had to do it religiously, it would be a lot harder. I would try to eat a lot healthier and exercise more, and my goal is to get a six pack. I would also try to give up all sweets. That one wouldn't be as hard for me, but it would still be hard. I think it would be very tempting, though.

Why should we give up something...why don't we do something special...like be more gracious, more kind, more happy and spread cheer. Take time to shake someone's hand, give a big bright smile, or if you would rather....give a lovely gift anonymously especially to shut ins. Maybe help someone fix their wheelchair, move a sofa, cook an extra meal and give it to a shutin or someone who lives alone. Your actions or lack there of do make a difference, right or wrong, with or without recognition.

I would probably give up all my social networking accounts. I chose this because really think I could spend more of my time doing more productive things rather then sitting for hours at the computer or on my phone. I remember when no my age had a Facebook or Instagram, life was so much more fun. I could go outside and play with my friends or learn things, really anything more productive than staring at a computer screen. It would be tough, but I think I could do it. Not only would it benefit my life, but it would take up less of my phone storage! :)

Since I'm a Muslim, in Ramadan we give up all food, water, and sexual activities every day from sunrise until sunset. If I celebrated Lent, however, I might give up talking back to people, or not complain at all, and try really hard to be a better person. This doesn't mean I'd go back the second Easter starts, I would try to stay like that.

    February 15, 2013 at 5:47 pm |

Something that would be hard to live without for 40 days would be having friends over. People don't realize how socially attached they are to there friends and it would be hard to not be able to hang out with them.

I don't celebrate Lent, since I'm not a Christian, but if someone tells me I have to give up someting for 40 days, I'd give up fat foods. I've put on some weight during winter vacation. I have to lose weight. My mom's killing me by using that fact.

    February 16, 2013 at 7:10 pm |
  457. Jason

Every year at Lent, my wife and I institute a practice of abstinence and engagement. We choose something in our lives that's proven to be distracting from our walk with God – not necessarily something bad, just something that's filling that we can do without. Last year I gave up nationwide news, such as Fox and CNN (no offense). Then we also choose to engage in something that draws us closer to God, such as praying for X number of minutes or intentionally journaling on a daily basis. The idea comes from Dallas Willard's "Spirit of the Disciplines" book. May this be a fulfilling season for all – Catholic, Protestant, or otherwise.

The thing I could give up is, texting. I rarely use my phone, but when I do I use it for that reason. I have actually done it before, as a punishment. There was a huge group text -216 texts in total-. So my parents took away the possibility of texting for 2 months. It was difficult!!!!!!

For myself, I think I could give up on going on electronics for no good reason, and use them only for emergencies or school projects. But for many people around me, I think using their phones for only calling would be already a huge challenge, 'cause every time I think of a friend, I think of them staring at their phones.

As an Eastern Orthodox Christian, Lent is a Vegan affair. Orthodox Christians traditionally give up all meat (including fish), dairy, eggs, alcohol, and olive oil. This is an ancient practice that I was rather sad to hear that few western Christians ever observe. I think a traditional observance of a strict Lenten fast could greatly renew some of the spiritual awareness lost to our Catholic and Protestant brothers and sisters.

Honestly, everything I could give up, I don't want to. Although speaking realistically, I will give up more of my time and read the Bible, along with running a mile a day. I need to start exercising more.

I could give up texting since I don't text much! It is somewhat sad to see that everywhere I look someone is glued to their smartphone. Our nation is typing itself into its lowest state of real social interaction ever.

I'm trying Lent for the first time this year, and I'm giving up searching the internet as a recreation. It was starting to get in the way of doing my schoolwork, and I figured that God would accept it being something that both helped me be more responsible, and was a sacrifice on my part.

I've always failed at trying to give up something for lent. One year I attempted to give up chocolate. Let's just say that after forty days, the huge box of Hershey's my mom buys every other month was gone. This year I hope to give up something easier, NOT vegetables, but Facebook.
