A Ban on 'Sugary' Drinks?

Mayor Michael Bloomberg says more than half of New York City's adults are overweight or obese, and he believes that banning large, "sugary" drinks in restaurants will help reduce the problem.  If it becomes law, the proposal would make it illegal for restaurants to sell certain drinks in sizes larger than 16 ounces.

There's no shortage of critics of this plan.  McDonald's, Coca-Cola, and some everyday New Yorkers believe that restaurants should be able to sell whatever size beverages they want - and that consumers should be able to buy them.  Others support the proposal, saying it would help cut down on unhealthy diets.

What we'd like to know is what you think of the mayor's proposal.

It's a great idea! I haven't been drinking soda for two weeks and I feel less tired and just overall better.

THATS a bad idea kids need sugar so they can be waken up and not be tired .

I think that it realy dosent matter what we drink, unless we go over board and drink sodas or sugery drinks everyday

I think they should because if they don't most if the the U.S schools will have obsessed kids or the U.S. school boards will just have to fix all the policy on having sugary foods. And if some kids are in Football,Baseball,BasketBall they will only be able to run like 4 FT_

I agree because some of us drink way too much soda and it will be a big challange for of us. Also you might end up not having soda for a while because your not used to it. $$$$$$$$$$$$$

If this becomes a law then it will probably end up like the prohibition of alcohol and people in New York would boot leg larger ounces into NY and sell it.

Yes, It is a good idea because some severely obese peopLe could help cut down and make a path to a better life.

I agree that this law will probably end up like prohibition of alcohol, although not as extreme. Also, it's not just kids who drink soda and other sugary drinks. Other people won't like the fact that their drinks are being regulated by the law.

I think they should because kids depend on surgery drinks but kids should only have very little surgery drinks because of sports and band and chorus.

I don't see why we should be forced on what we can drink, yes while childhood obesity is high that's not their fault it is their parents fault. If their parents want to tell them no then they should, but we shouldn't have our mayors telling us what drink, you wouldn't want him to tell you what to wear.

I believe that the consumer and the provider should be able to buy and sell what ever they like but I also agree with the mayor and I like the fact that he is addressing a major issue that affects the health of many american citizens.

I don't think thay should make this a law because restraunts have the right to sell what they want, when they want, and how much of what they want and it would also be a violation to the 1st amendment in the bill of rights

I like this idea because you have got to limit your drinks. You can not keep gulping lots of soda. You should think about your healt at the same time of having fun. I think you should not have more than a glass of soda

I like this idea because you have got to limit your drinks. You can not keep gulping lots of soda. You should think about your healt at the same time of having fun. I think you should not have more than a glass of soda. I would rather drink Gatorade or Powerade because children always are growing. The also play a lot of sports. From my perspective, I think it should be banned for young and growing kids.

this is a good idea at first, but then you are taking away the choice from the consumer. If somebody wants to buy a soda larger than 16 ounces, then they should be able to. You are limiting somebody's freedom of choice if you limit the size.

Personally, I think this is a good idea. The proposal is a good way to cut down on the amount sugar people get because they would probably feel a little greedy if they got more than a couple drinks/refills to satisfy their thirst. But would New Yorkers even pay attention to the law? Also, does it impose on the American ideal of capitalism?

WOW! That is so sad that the government has to control what we drink. We are slowly inching back to not being a republic!

I believe this takes our civil liberties, freedoms, and rights away. People should be able to decide what they want to drink, and it is not our government's concern what drinks we consume or not.

  17. Adam

To me this proposal in an outrage. It doesn't make any sense to me at all. 15.9 ounces is ok, but 16 isn't? If health is such a big issue in NY City, why not ban subways and have individuals walk? Absurd right? That is what this idea is, a complete waste of time. There are more important concerns that needs to be addressed. In making decisions the benefits need to outweigh the cost, and in no way shape or form can the benefits of this proposal outweigh the cost (Short or Long term)

I think it is an awesome idea. It helps people get into a better shape physically and mentally. Although I also think that the people drinking it should have the right to choose what goes into them, whether it is good or bad. You can stop selling big sodas but can you stop the people from drinking them?

    June 1, 2012 at 5:56 am |
  19. Victoria

I think its a bad idea. Banning large drinks isn't going to stop you from buying 2 mediums. This idea isn't going to stop people from being obese. This also isn't going to work because they could go to a store and but a 2 liter bottle of soda to drink with their meal.

    June 1, 2012 at 6:10 am |

I think it's a great idea people in not just new York but all over the country are obese and I think this will help out a lot with that. When you don't drink soda you feel so much healthier I know it taste good but it's much better for you if you have little to no soda

    June 1, 2012 at 6:37 am |
  21. Yu-jin

America is free country, so I think banding sugar drink is not good. If people want, they could drink. If they don't, they don't have to. I think this is best way.

I think it is a great idea. I'm a Korean, so I don't know how many people drink sugary drinks in America. However in Korea, most of kids never drink sodas, or cokes because it is "un-healthy."

    June 1, 2012 at 7:24 am |
  23. Parth

I think that it is a bad idea since if this turns into a law of no sugary drinks than i can probably bet there will be a protest from children or from some teens since lot's of teens drink cokes and lot's of other energy drinks. It also isn't a problem for me since i drink coke every 10 minutes.

I think this is right because sugars could make your body even bigger and badder. But what if kids eat other sugary foods except sodas or drinks? That makes the banning useless. I think there should be other bannings about sugary foods including drinks. Like ice-cream, sherbert etc.

    June 1, 2012 at 7:55 am |

I think thats a wonderful idea! The law could help end obesity. Most people are making bad choices about food so give them a push in the right direction.

No, because how would we stay a wake if you were at work all night and kids should be aloud to get a drink like that if they want to

    June 1, 2012 at 8:04 am |
  28. Brooke

I don’t think that restaurants should not be able to sell certain types of sugary drinks. They should be able to sell whatever type of drink that they would like. The people that buy these drinks are the ones that are having all of these problems. There should be no reason for selling these dinks to be illegal. Yes I know that it would cut down on peoples unhealthy diets. But if those people really wanted to cut down they should be smart enough to not buy them. They should have to be told no by something being illegal. All and all, people need to start being responsible for there self and not wait for a law to tell them what to do.

This is a good idea because kids depend too much on sugary drinks. Cutting down on the amount of large sugary drinks can reduce the risk of heart problems such as heart disease, strokes, heart attacks, and high cholesterol.

althouth drinks like pesei can lead to kedney problems,it's not all bad stuff, 7-up still good to drink, which i in fact drink when i get sick every now and then

I am against this. I think that people should have the option of drinking more than 16 ounces of sugary drinks. People have the right to make their own decisions.

    June 1, 2012 at 8:43 am |
  34. Laurren

I think this law it actually very fair. Its very fair because the government is complaining about obesity and these drinks have sugar. So the less we have to drink the more people might cut back on large drinks. But some people might take this to advantage and buy more than one drink just to get the right amount. So really its just our fault for drinking too "sugary" drinks.

    June 1, 2012 at 8:46 am |
  35. Belllah

I don't like this idea because I think it makes the government to in control of what we do. This is a free country and if I want to drink a 32 ounce soda I'm going to drink one! If this is a free country people should do what they want to do. Is is NOT the way to decrease obesity by taking away our rights!! Obesity can really only change if people work out and eat healthier but the government can't do it for them!

    June 1, 2012 at 8:46 am |
  36. Nickki

I don't think that the rule is fair or should be in affect because this is a free country and its up to the people to decide what they want to drink, however the government should warn people about what could happen to them in the long run if they keep getting large sugary drinks

    June 1, 2012 at 8:46 am |

I don't think the should be banning sugary drinks because every kid wants a little bit of pop and it's our choice of how much we consume.Let kids be kids

    June 1, 2012 at 8:49 am |
  42. Jonathan

Sugary drinks should have a limit but it must be decided on a mid grown because soda companies will continue to make two liter pop and people have cups at home where they can git fifty times as much.

  43. Cory

I really not sure what to think. I mean this is the US where we all live. I think we all should be able to have the right to have what size sodas we want. I think it all in moderation of how much you have. Parents should control there kids of what and how much they drink soda. Yes It unhealthy but we should be able to choose what size soda we want. I think this is a dumb idea. Of course anything like water is better for you. But let people choose what sizes they want to drink don't punish New Yorkers for what they drink for sizes. I think this should fall short. I hope it fails. Anyways good luck New Yorkers I hope you guys raise your voice up and SAY NO to this.

My thought on sugary drinks is as Americans we are role models for the rest of the world. Children in other countries barely have clean water, so let's clean it up USA and take care of our bodies and maintain care for other countries.

I think the ban on sugary drinks would be beneficial to everyone.evern though they taste good, it would help with the obesity thats been increasing fast. It will be better for the future also.

    June 1, 2012 at 8:52 am |
  48. Eric

It is the best idea because the U.S. is becoming more obesity. But it my have a reflect on the soda company's like Pepsi coke and more.

    June 1, 2012 at 8:55 am |
  49. Skea

I disagree strongly with banding them. It should be our choice whether we get to drink them or not. Yes, the obesity population is increasing, as each day is going on, but taking the sugary drinks away at a 16 oz effect will not help the situation. there are
still so many sugary products out there as a replacement for sugary drinks such as kool-aid, hostess cupcakes..etc..etc.

    June 1, 2012 at 8:55 am |
  50. Michaela

I think they should not ban sugary drinks because if we have freedom of speech then we should be able to make our own choices to drink what we want .if we make the choice to drink a sugary drink then that's our fault that we get sick.

    June 1, 2012 at 8:57 am |

Though I do not live in New York, I still disagree with this ban on sugary drinks. I believe that it is wrong to restrict someone else's choice on how much soda/juice they want to get whether it be for a party or even just them on their own. 2 Liter drinks are the most essential when it comes down to large groups. It would also bring down sales in the soda companies. It's just like the ban on school Bake Sales. Those are fundraisers to help raise money for the school. It's just not fair for everyone.

    June 1, 2012 at 9:05 am |
  60. Jorge

I dont agree with this law because, its just basically the government trying to control everything we buy. First they put tax on sugar filled things and now they are banding large sugary drinks

I think sugary drinks shouldn't be banned because they weren't a problem before then all of a sudden there is a problem. So they should just go back to the way they use to be made. Because for them to not have a problem up until now, that means they did something to the drinks making them be a problem.

    June 1, 2012 at 9:06 am |
  63. Imani

I think that we should get a certain amount of sugary drinks because that is why people die from being obese. Also people's teeth can get rotten and some don't have heath insurance and have to pay for their teeth to get cleaned.

I think it's a good idea because many people will not bear the maximum amount of sugar(sugary drink) in mind when there's no restriction, it will become a great loss to the country because consuming too much sugar will eventually lead to diseases and will cause immense medical expense.

I think banning sugary drinks is not going to solve anything. The mayor shouldn't have a say on what people can or cant drink if it is not positive you are going to get a disease.

  73. Alexandria

i think that this idea is wrong because when people are in school or in work, then they will fall asleep. If they fall asleep, they will get fired. Also it keeps them awake and it gives us energy. I also think its a good idea because the sugar in it gets us really hyper and it could kill u and it can give u diseases.

    June 1, 2012 at 9:09 am |

Even though i don't live in New York I think that the people are obligated to drink whatever they want .Everyone in New York doesn't all drink over 16 oz. of soda so the people that do drink it thats their problem and even if they band them you can get a refills, So therefore they shouldn't band them because they people can make there own decisions if they want to get sugary drinks or not No one should make the decisions for them !

    June 1, 2012 at 9:10 am |

    June 1, 2012 at 9:12 am |
  78. Jacob

I don't think it's a good idea because it is not there choice to decide the health of other people and sugary drinks should be the least of there problems they should be worrying about bigger things about peoples health and if people want more of a drink they will just by there self one extra drink witch is just going to lose people more of there money.

    June 1, 2012 at 9:12 am |
  79. Timothy

I think it is a good idea because people are getting diseases. Also many people get addicted to the sugary drinks. It damages your skin as-well it creates pimples and slows down your speed.

  80. Jake

in my opinion i don't like the idea of banning sugary drinks because a lot of people like sugary drinks including me and i think that everyone should drink or eat what ever they want and if anything happens to them thats they're fault

  81. Daniel

Well i don"t like the idea about not having any sugary drinks above 16 oz because some people like me love to drink lots of sodas like 2 liters and had no side effect.

    June 1, 2012 at 9:15 am |
  82. Daniele

i think that this is not a good idea because if this law passed, people can still buy more than one drink to equal the amount that they want. So to me, this law is pointless because like it or not, they are allowed to buy more and they would still remain overweight.

    June 1, 2012 at 9:15 am |

I think this is a great idea because we are the number one obese in the country. That is so not good. It will slow down the obese. To be honest where ever i go i see people drink pop and few people drink water and kids, i see pop and lots of juice.

i think this is insane because when we have 16 ounces of sugar in drinks we will not have the good rush that we will need and also with no sugary drinks above 16 ounces lots of people may not want to purchase drinks because they most likely will say "Are You Kidding Me" and sneak in some soda larger then 16 ounces with out employees knowing.

    June 1, 2012 at 9:23 am |
  91. Humberto

It's a great idea because a lot of people are having trouble with obesity from soda's sugars.

    June 1, 2012 at 9:24 am |
  92. JOCELYN

I THINK WE NEED TO STOP MAKING BIG SODA CUPS. THEY NEED TO STOP DRINKING SODA. SODA HAVE SUGAR. SODA IS BAD FOR YOU. AND IS NOT GOOD FOR PEOPLE . SOME PEOPLE HAVE DIED BECAUSE OF THE COCA COLA . THEY NEED TO STOP MAKING SODAS. FOR REAL THEY NEED TO STOP NOW.

    June 1, 2012 at 9:25 am |
  93. Rose

I think this is horrible >:O , people need MORE soda in their life . mayor bloomberg you are a horrible example for little kids that love soda .

    June 1, 2012 at 9:27 am |
  94. Noah

I think a lot of places will offer free refills and it won't matter anyway. I do think they should go to the 12 ounce size because more people are becoming obese. This would help people who only drink one serving.

    June 1, 2012 at 9:28 am |
  95. Priscilla

I think that they should not ban on sugary drinks because some people might want to have sugar. But i also agree because there are a lot of obesity and from eating and drinking a lot of sugery things.

    June 1, 2012 at 9:31 am |
  96. Bibi

I think its a good and bad idea. >_____< I think its a bad idea because almost everybody in New York drink soda, why would they want to band it!? But also its a good idea because more, and more people get fat and get diabetes.

    June 1, 2012 at 9:31 am |
  97. Jaylah

Kids someties eat a lot of sugary drinks ad I think its ok if there parents let them drink them its fine also they need the energy sometimes...

    June 1, 2012 at 9:31 am |
  98. ashley

i think this a horrible idea. kids need sugar in there life. if there is no sugar in kids life what do you think kids are going to become O.o

    June 1, 2012 at 9:32 am |
  99. Jessica :)

I think that they should not band buying sugary drinks because, they take away all the drinks from stores delis and other places. If they take it way, they would not make any money or profits. i really disagree because, sometimes you do need sugar once in a while! if this comes to a point where it becomes a law, may by alcohol may follow.

    i think this is stupid:|

    June 1, 2012 at 9:35 am |
  101. Kennedy

I think it's a good idea to cut down on sugary drinks because obesity is a big problem in this country, 64% more than half! It's not like you can't drink any just 16 oz in moderation.

    June 1, 2012 at 9:35 am |
  102. Katie

I think people should be able to buy their own sodas. If it is a very large soda they should be able to buy it. It is their choice.

    i hate this new rule

  104. Caroline & Matthew

We think that this ban should not happen because our families like just getting a 32 ounce to save money. So we do not think this ban should go through.

    June 1, 2012 at 9:37 am |
  105. Katelyn

no , because i love soda !! ❤ and people would like to have as many as they want. And if you want more soda and theres nomore soda then you would have to get refills and pay way more. when you can just buy a bigger cup that would make it cheeper ! ;]

    June 1, 2012 at 9:38 am |
  106. Nick

I think that there should not be a ban on drinks because it the people's choice to have those drinks.

    June 1, 2012 at 9:38 am |
  107. Caroline

I don't think is ban should go through my family just likes getting a 32 ounce and sharing to save money. If this ban pulls through we wont be able to do that.

    June 1, 2012 at 9:38 am |
  108. christine

I think they should not band the large sodas because some people need energy. but it is kind of good because kids would not be that fat and over weight. but if you band that you would have to every thing that is sugary to eat to .

    June 1, 2012 at 9:39 am |
  109. Logan

I do not agree with the sugary drink proposal. I believe it is up to the person who is buying the drink to make the decision. even though they are not good for you, people have the rite to choose.

    June 1, 2012 at 9:39 am |
  110. Priscilla

I do not agree that they are going to ban sugary drinks. But also sugary drinks are bad because thats what cause Diabieties and also other sickness.

    June 1, 2012 at 9:39 am |
  111. Spencer & Jon

I think it's a bad idea because some people have the knowlge to pick the size of their drinks and
Choose a life that they want to live

    June 1, 2012 at 9:40 am |
  112. Cyrus

Sugary drinks aren't the reason people are obese. It's the food restaurants serve. People should be allowed to choose how much they drink.

    June 1, 2012 at 9:40 am |
  113. Carlos

    idk..... i love Sodaaaa !!! 🙂

    June 1, 2012 at 9:41 am |

I agree because most people get one large drink for themselves and that is very unhealthy.

    June 1, 2012 at 9:41 am |
  115. Marissa & Aaron

We believe that the policy is mediocre and the decision to consume any type of sugary beverage should be decided by the consumer, not New york's government. We all have a right to drink what we choose as consumers. We pay for it, so what is the big deal?

    June 1, 2012 at 9:41 am |
  116. Andrew

I do agree because not many people drink sugary drinks so we should all drink healthy drinks

    June 1, 2012 at 9:41 am |

I Do Not Agree With The Mayor Because although it may be uN Healthy BUt People Should Be Able To Drink What They Want and its NOt LIke Everyday People Are Going to DRink SOdas out of a huge cup Maybe once In a while U Just cant take away something that already apart of almost everybody life it like taking away money from buisness which wont be cool (: ❤ ❤ ❤

    June 1, 2012 at 9:41 am |
  118. Brendan

I think they should not have that as a law because people should be able to decide what they drink when or were ever they want.

    June 1, 2012 at 9:42 am |
  119. Trentin

Iin this occasion the decisions are to be made by, The user of the product, therefor I do not agree with the descision of the mayor. It is the persons fault how much they weigh and it is not The city's descision on whom should be using the product or how much, They consume.

    June 1, 2012 at 9:43 am |
  120. Genesis

I think that this is a good and bad idea. This is good because there are many obese children in America, so thats good that they are removing these things and preventing Diabetes. Kids and adults have to start living a healthier life considering that most of America is over weight. To me it is also a bad idea because no one should be making a choice for someone else.

    June 1, 2012 at 9:43 am |
  121. Sami & Aleigha

Its a good idea but it wouldn't really change anything because you could always get more than one of the 16 oz. and that would be just like buying a 32 oz. If the law did get passed you would still be able to choose your own size.

    June 1, 2012 at 9:43 am |
  122. Eddie & Jaden

I think people should be able to drink what they want, the government should not be able to control what people buy with there own hard earned money.

    June 1, 2012 at 9:44 am |
  123. Bryna& Olivia

I don't think it should be a law, Because people should be able to make their own decisions. If they choose to be on an unhealthy diet, then so be it. If people use common sense, they should know not to buy a huge 32 ounce coke. Before people buy it they know how unhealthy it is.

    June 1, 2012 at 9:44 am |
  124. Abby and Natalie

We think that everyone should get to choose what they eat and drink. People will do what they want and government forcing things on them will make them rebell more.

  125. Ryan&matt

we think that it should be up to the people if they want to drink an oversized drink

    June 1, 2012 at 9:45 am |
  126. Emily

I didn't like this ban because, if people chose to have that size of drink, they are taking the risks.

    June 1, 2012 at 9:47 am |
  127. Taylor

I do not agree because if people want to drink soda and a big size of it they have the right to do it. They are taking their own risks.

    June 1, 2012 at 9:48 am |
  128. Krystal

I think that people should be able to drink what ever they want. I think they would know the health problems. But it's up to the people if they want to take that risk. If they want a 32 ounce Pepsi then they should be able to get a 32ounce Pepsi. And the people that sell this stuff make money. Once I went to a arbys and just got a coke cola (32ounce) to share with my brother. They make the money then they pay the bills to the government. So they would lose money.

    June 1, 2012 at 9:52 am |
  129. Nick & David

I agree with this because people go to fast food restaurant and they get drinks like Pepsi and other drinks and People can get cancer by that.i don't think they should band drink because it the people diets that they should worry about and that there problem if they get cancer.

    June 1, 2012 at 9:53 am |
  130. Michael.

All the people saying they should ban it are older...they got to drink as they grow up so why can't we?

    June 1, 2012 at 9:54 am |
  131. Sydney

I think this ban would be ridiculous and it shouldn't be passed. If the common person wants to drink a large amount of sugary drinks let them!

    June 1, 2012 at 9:54 am |
  132. Skyler

i don't think that they should ban sugary drinks because people should decide if they want a certain size of soda

    June 1, 2012 at 9:55 am |

I say that the should not ban sugary drinks if people are overweight that's their lifestyle

    June 1, 2012 at 9:57 am |
  134. Reid

I think they people should be able to do what they want with what they drink. If people like it why take it from them, its not affecting you at all. I think people should be able to have or do what they want, instead of doing what other people think is right.

    June 1, 2012 at 9:58 am |
  135. Jada

I'm not in New York and that's a good thing. If it was to come to Florida everyone(including me) will be sad because that would mean no more Circle K drink.

    June 1, 2012 at 10:01 am |
  136. Brandon

I can't believe that New Yorkers cannot drink Surgary Refreshments

    June 1, 2012 at 10:04 am |
  137. Susan

    It's an awesome idea!
It would be nice so people wouldn't get too much sugar from the drinks, especially the kids.

    June 1, 2012 at 10:05 am |
  138. Harrison

Yes,I think that it is okay for the city to ban over than 16 ounces.

    June 1, 2012 at 10:05 am |
  139. Lucy

I don't think it's good. Why shouldn't people be allowed to drink as much as they want?

    June 1, 2012 at 10:06 am |
  140. Samuel

It's fine with me. I'd just order water or orange juice instead.

    June 1, 2012 at 10:11 am |

I don't like this proposal. I think people should be able to chose what and how much they want to drink.

    June 1, 2012 at 10:12 am |
  142. zach

it is kind of dumb that they are trying to band big sodas the people who want big pops should be able to drink pops it is a free country they can drink and eat what ever they want

    June 1, 2012 at 10:23 am |
  143. CJ

The people can choose what they can get. Unless this is for budget cuts, they shouldn't ban large soda.

    June 1, 2012 at 10:23 am |
  144. zach

and another thing is that if parents what their kids drinking sugary drinks it is up to them to let their kids drink that kind of stuff and if the older people the want to drink sugary drinks can.

    June 1, 2012 at 10:26 am |
  145. Jacob

I think it should be the consumers choice to buy whatever they want and it would probably cause inflation in prices to buy things at the fast food places or the party stores so they can make the same amount they lost from the large drinks

    June 1, 2012 at 10:34 am |
  146. Gareth

I think this is a bad idea because it should be the customers choice to have a large drink or a small drink.

    June 1, 2012 at 10:34 am |
  147. Marina

I think that if people want to buy large sized drinks they should be able to. It's their body and they can put as much sugar in it as they want.

    June 1, 2012 at 10:34 am |
  148. Lexie

I think it's a good idea because sugary drinks are a big cause of obesity and being overweight. If we banned larger amounts America could have a better health rate. I barely drink sugary drinks and I feel more hydrated when I'm not.

    June 1, 2012 at 10:35 am |
  149. Sierra

I think they should be able to drink however much they want. If they want to risk their they should be able to if they want to.

    June 1, 2012 at 10:35 am |
  150. Jack

I personally think this law shouldn't be decided by the mayor. It's the own persons fault how much of the sugary drink they consume and should make their own decisions. Not everyone in New York is overweight and most of the people don't deserve this law.

    June 1, 2012 at 10:35 am |
  151. Amber

I agree with him because there really are a lot of obese people in the world and it's not just adults. We also need less sugery drinks in the world. If I were him I would make the fast food restaurants only be able to sell 16oz. Drinks. I usually don't drink a lot of soda but I think it's a good idea.

    June 1, 2012 at 10:36 am |
  152. Elyza

I think sugary drinks should be banned because people health is more important than getting a huge sugary drink.

    June 1, 2012 at 10:36 am |
  153. Grant

I think that the mayor should not control the amount of pop they get because it is noun of his busiNess if the people want to drink a lot of soda it is there choice

    June 1, 2012 at 10:37 am |
  154. Mackenzie

I think they should ban big sized drinks in restraunts since people are getting obeast and unhealthy. Health should come first! also when parents let their kids have what ever they want when they go out to eat they don't have to worry about them being unhealthy and it won't be a problem. There should be a limit!!!

    June 1, 2012 at 10:37 am |
  155. Sydney

I think that sugary drinks should be banned because if you drink a lot of sugary drinks you have a higher risk of getting cancer, diabetes, and you can become very obese over time.

    June 1, 2012 at 10:38 am |
  156. Chelsea

I think that they should band them because they are un. Healthy and it will refuse the ammont of fat In new York but if you want the people less obsessed then they should close unhealthy restronts and other fattening places to eat. We don't need all this fat food or drinks!

    June 1, 2012 at 10:38 am |
  157. Curtis

I think that the ban on sugary drinks is not a good idea because people should be able to drink what they want who'd you like someone to tell you how to live and what to drink.

    June 1, 2012 at 10:38 am |
  158. Elijah

I think it's the consumers choice to get what they need to satisfy their taste. Doesn't matter how big the cup is.

    June 1, 2012 at 10:39 am |
  159. Lauren

I agree with this law because a lot of people are becoming obesed from these large, sugary drinks and this law can stop it.

    June 1, 2012 at 10:39 am |
  160. Richard

I honestly think that surgery drinks should be band because so many people are already obsessed but if we cut down on the size of the sugary drinks then we might have more people that aren't obsessed then more people would be outside doing more things maybe things would cost less than what they are now because more people are buying from grocery stores than buying from fast food restaurants

    June 1, 2012 at 10:39 am |
  161. Brad

I don't think sugar drinks should get banned from restaurants in New York because it's the peoples opinion to buy the drinks not the mayors opinion so they could buy it if they want.

    June 1, 2012 at 10:39 am |
  162. Michael

I think we shouldn't ban fountain drinks because we buy them because we want them.if we didn't buy them then we wouldn't want them.

    June 1, 2012 at 10:40 am |
  163. Meghan

I think it is a bad Idea because people make choices about what they eat or drink. I think that just banning pop is a bad idea. Because most people who want a large pop will go and get something else like a large milk shake or smooth. They will all have the same sugar count and they are all bad for you but it is people's disition to drink it and if they get sick then they have to live with there choices.

    June 1, 2012 at 10:40 am |
  164. Daniel

I think that it is a smart choice by mayor Bloomberg to do this for the city's health but he is not everyone's mother. It is the people that get to choose. I thought this was a free country?

    June 1, 2012 at 10:40 am |
  165. Noah

I think that there shouldn't be a ban because people should be able to pick how large or how small of a drink they want, I know that I like to drink the biggest size they have.

    June 1, 2012 at 10:40 am |
  166. Claudia

I think the ban on selling sugary drinks over 16 ounces is a very smart idea to help keep people's health in check. I think anything under 16 ounces is definitely enough to drink. It ban will also help sugary drinks be less of a contributer to obesity and health problems.

    June 1, 2012 at 10:41 am |
  167. Ameer

I think that everyone has a right to what they want. I never drink pop but that doesn't mean that I don't want it sometimes. Also how is pop the only reason why people are over weight, because it's not, why doesn't the mayor limit the amount of chocolate or sweets we eat. He wouldn't do that, because that leads to less money each business will make and that will lead to less money for that city or state! But banning large amounts of pop can lead to good things like more money in everyone's pockets, also it may make some people more healthier. So I am on both sides of banning large amounts of pop.

    June 1, 2012 at 10:42 am |
  168. Kai

To be honest I really don’t thing Mayor Bloomberg should put a ban on “sugary drinks” because he shouldn’t be controlling other people’s lives. If people want to drink lots and lots of soda let them. If they want to end up getting cancer or heart disease then that’s their problem. It’s not fair to the people to not allow drinking soda, and if that wins then maybe people will start to move out of New York to move to states that have soda

    June 1, 2012 at 10:46 am |
  169. Ashlynn

Banning sugary drinks would be a great idea. Banning them would be great because they aren’t good for your health anyways. Especially because they are banning them in a big city this would make a big difference in our health and getting people to drink more water, milk, juice, etc. Also if people are trying to go on diet, this would be a great start. People who drink too much soda or artificial flavored, sugary drinks they can start thinking about what else would make them healthier too.

    June 1, 2012 at 10:46 am |
  170. billy

I think that they should let people drink what they want. Its there choice on how much they drink. If it fits with you its ok.

    June 1, 2012 at 11:01 am |
  171. Alex

I dont't think that any forms of government should be babysitting civillians. People should be able to make their own choices. Thats is what our country is all about is the people making most of the choices isn't it? So why should the government be telling people what they can and can't drink?

    June 1, 2012 at 11:15 am |
  172. Finn

I think it is up to the person to make their own choices. Bloomberg should not be able to make their choices for them.

    June 1, 2012 at 11:18 am |
  173. Olivia

In my prospective drinking soda is unhealthy, but sometimes people just want it. Everyone has a freedom of speech, so we should be able to drink soda at the size we prefer. I see what the mayor is getting at, but if citizens want to drink it that's not his problem.

    June 1, 2012 at 11:25 am |
  174. khalifa

i think that they shouldn't abanden selling the big drinks. also the government shouldn't worry bout what what other people drink. my opinion is you should drink what you want.

    June 1, 2012 at 11:31 am |
  175. Marquise

I dont like the idea because the government should not be trying to controlling worrying what other people eat or how sugary people's drinks are.

    June 1, 2012 at 11:32 am |
  176. casiana

I think there should be a limit to the size of sugary drinks.
People in this country are getting diabetes and obesity and the government is trying to make the people more healthy and make those high percentages go down. Hopefully this gets passed. We need to help people change their health.

    June 1, 2012 at 11:33 am |
  177. sabrinna

I think it's messed up because the mayor knows he goes home to a big gulp of Dr Pepper. Also he's not the parent of anybody to tell them what they can and can't do.

    June 1, 2012 at 11:34 am |
  178. Robert

I think that is a bad idea to ban sugary drinks because people should not care about what other people do. It is the citizens choice to drink what they want and how much of it they are gonna drink.

    June 1, 2012 at 11:34 am |
  179. Rutta

i think they should do what they have to do. kids don't need that much sugary. i think we should all work on a team and cut sugary off .

    June 1, 2012 at 11:36 am |
  180. ethan

i think it the parent choice. i disagree with the scientist.kids need sugar.

    June 1, 2012 at 11:36 am |
  181. Krysta

I think the mayor of New York city is not every body's parent so he should stop acting like it. I believe that if people want to get diabetes and eat unhealthy you should let them. I believe this because they know what their drinking is not good for them but its their decision to make a good choice or bad choice.

    June 1, 2012 at 11:41 am |
  182. Zarrow

I think it eon't matter the limit that you put on the sugary drinks. People can always get a refill so it would be kind of pointless

    June 1, 2012 at 11:52 am |
  183. Zarrow

I think it doesn't matter the limit you put on the sugary drinks. People can always get a refill so it would be pointless

    June 1, 2012 at 11:53 am |
  184. Ashley

I don't agree with this idea. People know the risks that come with drinking sugary drinks. But, if they know the risks and still want to drink it, well, that is their decision. I don't think that other people's decision should be made for them.

    June 1, 2012 at 11:55 am |
  185. Jack

I find the ban a little over the top, if the drinks are to sugary then the people just shouldn’t buy it. They shouldn’t have to ban the drinks for them to stop drinking them!

    June 1, 2012 at 12:01 pm |
  186. dakota

I think that people should be able to put whatever they want in there body’s on no there should not be a band on sugary drinks.

    June 1, 2012 at 12:03 pm |
  187. Josh

I am a sugary drinker myself but I think it’s a great idea to ban large sugary drinks in New York. I think this because just yesterday I read that sugary drinks are one of the causes for obesity because we drink too much of it.

    June 1, 2012 at 12:03 pm |
  188. Tristan

I don’t think it is a good thing that they are banning sugary drinks over 16 ounces because people have a choice if they want to get a sugary drink.

    June 1, 2012 at 12:04 pm |
  189. Kody

I don’t think it is right to ban over 16 ounce sugary drinks because it is the people’s choice to drink it or not and if they do so be it. They don’t get a 32 oz. of sugary drink every time they go there.

    June 1, 2012 at 12:04 pm |
  190. Bailey

I don’t think that drinking sugary drinks should become banned from restaurants because people should be able to drink whatever they want. If they do make it a law, some people would turn to other unhealthy foods and drinks anyways. I don’t think it would help the number of obese people go down if they do ban it.

  191. Emma

I don’t think banning sugary drinks was a good Idea because all people get to choose what they eat or drink this ban is just saying that we don’t have our rights anymore. I know he is trying to stop obesity but people should still have their say in what they eat or drink.

    June 1, 2012 at 12:05 pm |
  192. Connor

I believe this is a good idea because people more than half of New Yorkers are obese and this would be an excellent way to help cut that down. If people so many people are obese, they should have the common sense to not drink so much of these drinks.

    June 1, 2012 at 12:05 pm |
  193. Everett

I think the ban on surgery drinks should not be passed because it is there choice if they want to drink it and it’s nobody else to make that decision.

    June 1, 2012 at 12:06 pm |
  194. Maya

I dont think its fair that people would not be allowed to choose what they think is right. It would help obesity, but take away peoples freedom.

  195. Brenda

I think this is great idea because a lot of people drink sugar and they don’t have to drink sugar.

    June 1, 2012 at 12:06 pm |
  196. Jacob

I think it's great that they are trying to put a ban on sugary drinks but that restricts our freedom. Were not land of the free home of the people that can't have what they want. We our free people and we should get to chose what we want.

    June 1, 2012 at 12:06 pm |
  197. Lizbeth

I personally think that it’s the people’s choice on whether or not they want to drink something that’s so ‘sugary’. It’s the same when people smoke, it’s their choice; nobody’s forcing them to smoke.

    June 1, 2012 at 12:06 pm |
  198. Nina

I don’t believe the ban on sugary drinks is fair. It should be up to the person to decide if they would like to drink sugary drinks, no matter how bad they are for your health.

    June 1, 2012 at 12:06 pm |
  199. Emmanuel

I do think they should ban sugary drinks because all kids want is sugary drinks and it is bad for them they should only have a little of sugary drinks because of sports.

    June 1, 2012 at 12:07 pm |
  200. Bryce

I think it’s a bad idea because then most business doesn’t make too much money from it plus most of the time it’s all ice unless the buyer is filling his drink himself.

    June 1, 2012 at 12:07 pm |
  201. Delaney

I think it’s a bad idea because people should choose what they drink and how big the drink is.

I think that it’s a good idea to ban soft drinks because it can cause problems like diabetes and other health problems like pancreatic cancer that’s way my grandma died.

    June 1, 2012 at 12:08 pm |
  203. JoLynn

I believe that people should do, say, and drink whatever they want. Also if they want that much sugar in their body, it’s their problem. But, I don’t want people doing that, it’s just that you can’t really stop them.

    June 1, 2012 at 12:09 pm |
  204. Caleb

I don’t think they should ban over 16 ounce sugary drinks because it’s the people’s choice to choose what size drink they have. It isn’t like they get a 32 ounce drink every day. If they don’t get it too often, they should be fine.

    June 1, 2012 at 12:09 pm |
  205. Carly

I think it’s a bad idea. People should be able to choose what size soda or sugary drink they want. If they know it’s not healthy then they can choose a smaller size. It should be your chose.

    June 1, 2012 at 12:10 pm |
  206. Sheldon

I think they shouldn't ban it because it's the people who are drinking it's decision not the mayors.

    June 1, 2012 at 12:11 pm |

People should be able to make there own decisions

    June 1, 2012 at 12:12 pm |

I think that the ban in New York City is a good idea but they missed one thing. Even if they make the rule that the largest size that a restaurant can have is 16 ounces they have to remember that almost every restaurant gives out free refills. And people have the choice to drink the sugary drinks instead of another choice like water.

    June 1, 2012 at 12:12 pm |
  209. Cori

I don't agree with the ban because if we want the drinks then we want them. It is our choice to buy what size we want. It is taking away profits from the restaurants anyways.

    June 1, 2012 at 12:13 pm |
  210. Lindsay

If people want to ban sugary drinks before alcohol, they have no idea what they are doing. Restrauants should be allowed to sell sugary drinks in any size if they want. And even if they did, then pop company's such as coca cola would shut down and have to fire their workers which would aso cause a higher unemployment rate.

    June 1, 2012 at 12:13 pm |
  211. nick

people will find other ways to get soft drinks and this may lead to more alchohol drinking. yous should be able to drink what you want if you pay for it.

I think the mayor shouldn't have a say because people should be able to do what they want to.

  214. trevor

i think that it really shouldn't matter because soda will be drank no matter what but in a place like that it should be served in all sizes.

  215. Sydney

I don't agree with this ban because I think it should be up to the parent of the child or the person. It's their choice if they want to drink sugary drinks or not. Also even if this ban does become a law, that doesn't mean people are going to stop drinking these drinks or start eating healthier.

    June 1, 2012 at 12:14 pm |
  216. Alexis

I think thIs idea is horrible because some people need to eat/drink sugary stuff to survive, and it should be the resturants choice whether or not they want sugary drinks in their store.

    June 1, 2012 at 12:15 pm |
  217. Kylie

I don't think there should be a ban on large sugary drink because people are responsible for there health and if they think it's ok then they should be able to drink them.

    June 1, 2012 at 12:15 pm |
  218. Anthony

I believe we should raise awareness of the problems with everything with what we eat everyday they can't just complain on one thing you might as well ban everything that has an ounce of sugar. You cant just take one hing away and let other companies with something worse that just stays the sat just they should put signs of the awareness of everything that's not particularly there would be signs everywhere

    June 1, 2012 at 12:15 pm |
  219. Nick

I think that he shouldn't make a law because the person choice on what they eat and drink.

    June 1, 2012 at 12:15 pm |

I think the mayor was doing the right thing by banning the large sugary drinks. The people of new York need their portions controlled based on the obeisity rate and the mayor is trying to help his city get healthier. He is doing his city a favor, not a sin.

    June 1, 2012 at 12:16 pm |
  221. Taylor

I think that resteronts should be able to sell what ever they want. And people who are over weight shouldn't Drink big sized drinks trike that

    June 1, 2012 at 12:17 pm |
  222. Taylor

I think banning sugary drinks is a good idea ,because people are drinking it to much and they are getting obiest and that is bad for your health.

    June 1, 2012 at 12:17 pm |
  223. Matt

I think the idea is bad because people have the knowledge of knowing how much suger is in their drink. But I do think they should at least put a diagram of what might happen in the future. So you should pretty much do what people did on cigars and cigarettes.

    June 1, 2012 at 12:17 pm |
  224. Carson

I think people have the choice. I think this ban is unconstitutional we shouldn't let the government dictate our consumptions.

    June 1, 2012 at 12:17 pm |
  225. Zack

I think banning the large drinks is a good idea because soda these days are causing a lot of teeth rottening and acne. This world can be a healthier place if we minimized the soda drinking

    June 1, 2012 at 12:18 pm |
  226. Sydney

I don't agree with this ban. Just because you ban the sizes these drinks come in, people would still probably drink them and it wouldn't motivate many people to get into shape or eat healthier.

    June 1, 2012 at 12:19 pm |
  227. Jazmyne

I don't think that it is right to take the sugar drinks away because if they want to buy that much sugar they should be able to make there own decisons of how much sugar they want . Or just sell less of sugar to the customers.

    June 1, 2012 at 12:23 pm |
  228. Serena

I don't think thats the right thing to do. They should just inform everyone
That the sugar can cause health issues and leave it up to them I thought this
Was a free country we should be able to choose how much sugar we want.
Or just sell sugar free drinks/less sugar.

    June 1, 2012 at 12:23 pm |
  229. Kristen

I vote against the ban on larger drink sizes. Although it would benefit the restaurants and fast-food places by making people buy more and more soda. I think that people should be able to choose whether or not they want to be healthy. The mayor is doing his city a favor by trying to make them healthy, but at the same time the people might want to have their own say in their weight, and diet. I would not want a law against my drinking or eating habits because I think that's unfair to people.

    June 1, 2012 at 12:24 pm |
  230. Emily

I think it's a good idea to not sell sugary drinks. By banning this, it can hopefully make people have more energy because people are starting to rely on sugary things for sports and it's not healthy.

    June 1, 2012 at 12:27 pm |
  231. Chun

It doesn't really matter because you can still get a free refill.

    June 1, 2012 at 12:38 pm |
  232. Cathy

The ban is fine because drinking sugary drinks just makes you more thirsty!

    June 1, 2012 at 12:46 pm |
  233. Jean

I don't agree with this idea at all. Banning the size of sugary drinks will not help resolve the issue of obesity. People must learn to break negative food habits and practice portion control.

    June 1, 2012 at 1:26 pm |
  234. Sarah

I think that people should deside for them selves what size of drink they want, not having someone deside for you.

    June 1, 2012 at 1:38 pm |
  235. Peter

I think it's a bad idea. Because it's not up to the Mayor Bloomberg to decide what or how much soda someone drinks. It's a free country, we don't have people telling us what we can and can't drink.

    June 1, 2012 at 1:43 pm |
  236. Lauren

I think that baning soda is a good idea. it's real bad for you.
nobody want's to get sick, right?

    June 1, 2012 at 1:44 pm |
  237. Rachelle

I don’t think that our government should be able to tell us what size or what drinks we can have. It may not be good for us, but it’s our personal choice on what we put into our bodies. If they put a law on sugary drinks then they should also put a law on alcohol and cigarettes, because those are bad for you too.

    June 1, 2012 at 2:02 pm |
  238. Austin

say that the should not ban sugary drinks if people are overweight that's their lifestyle and their body they can make their own choices about what they do with their bodies.

    June 1, 2012 at 2:10 pm |
  239. Dylan

I don’t like this idea because it’s all up to the parent, if the kid wants a sugary drink then so be it.

    June 1, 2012 at 2:10 pm |
  240. Alissa

It’s your choice what you want to drink so there shouldn’t be a law against it. Every person has the right to choose.

    June 1, 2012 at 2:11 pm |
  241. Danielle

I think that this law would really help with the diabetes rate and the obesity rate, but unfortunately in the end it’s the person choice whether to drink the soda or not, and for some this law won’t stop them from drinking as much soda as they want.

    June 1, 2012 at 2:11 pm |
  242. Alyssa

They should not ban sugary drinks because people can choose what they to drink. People should be able to choose what they want to do with their own body and people should not choose what we want to drink. Many people get their energy for the day from sugary drinks.

    June 1, 2012 at 2:11 pm |
  243. Devon

I think that it should not matter what you drink. You should be able to choose how much soda you drink. If you don’t want all the sugar you can just choose a small drink, and if you do want sugar you should choose a big drink. I think people can do what they want.

    June 1, 2012 at 2:12 pm |
  244. Amanda

I think that this is a good idea because soda is bad for you. Young kids that drink soda is not very healthy. There are a lot of side effects that drinking soda can cause and you can make that decision to stop that. I believe a little soda now and then isn’t harmful. I think this is a great idea!

    June 1, 2012 at 2:12 pm |
  245. Garrett

I think that you should be able to choose what and what not to drink.

    June 1, 2012 at 2:12 pm |
  246. Noah

I think that it is the drinkers that should make that choice. Why ban it because of all the sugar in it that shouldn’t matter what you drink, eat should up to yourself.

    June 1, 2012 at 2:12 pm |
  247. Angela

I believe that it is up to the people to choose whether or not they wish to drink as much soda as they do. I think that it is going to extremes to say people can only drink so much.

    June 1, 2012 at 2:12 pm |
  248. Emma

I think that banning sugary drinks shouldn’t happen. It’s the person’s choice and if they want to put that into their body, it’s their decision. If they ban sugary drinks, they are basically taking away our rights and we don’t have a say on what we can drink anymore.

    June 1, 2012 at 2:13 pm |
  249. Drake

I think it is the people's choice to put what they want into their body. If the people want to buy the large soda and drink it well that's their choice not someone else's choice. If the ban did go into law I don't think it would last long because there are too many soda drinkers.

    June 1, 2012 at 2:14 pm |
  250. Haley

I think that it’s the person’s choice if they want to drink soda, super-sized. Also, soda is not the leading cause of obesity around the world. So I think that the mayor should just leave the people drink what they want to drink, and not control them.

    June 1, 2012 at 2:14 pm |
  251. Mickayla

I believe that banning Sugary drinks is a good idea. 16 oz. of soda is plenty for one person in one day. One can of soda is only 12 oz. and there is no reason anyone needs more than that. Plus banning soda would make more people choose to drink water, milk, which is good for your bones, or juice.

    June 1, 2012 at 2:14 pm |
  252. Jake

I am a 7th grade teacher and according to 106 students that I surveyed 88 were against the law while 18 were in favor. The majority opinion is that it is not the government's position to decide what we should be able to buy and consume as citizens. The restuarants would lose money and lose jobs. Instead of taking the opportunity to buy these drinks away my students suggest that they should educate students about the adverse effects while in school and spend more money advertising healthier drinks.

    June 1, 2012 at 2:28 pm |
  253. Devin E.

I feel that it shouldn't matter about how much sugary drinks someone consumes at one time.
I think the government needs focus on bigger problems and stay out of our personal lives.
Just like the abortion decsion, I feel that our body is ours to do what we want to do with it.

    June 1, 2012 at 2:33 pm |
  254. Jennna

I think that banning sugary drinks is a good idea. People can decrease their chances of getting sicknesses like diabetes, cancer, heart disease etc. People could be over weight because of this and they might have a chance of getting to be healthier. People will be healthier without these sugary and oversized drinks.

    June 1, 2012 at 3:15 pm |
  255. MaKenna

I think sugary drinks should be banned if they are over 16 ounces. When they’re 32 ounces, they will lead to health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. 32 ounce drinks can also lead to a sugar rush due to the amount of calories and sugar in them. I don’t think you should drink over 16 ounces of a sugary soda.

    June 1, 2012 at 3:17 pm |
  256. Mariah

I think that it is a good idea to band sugary drinks. It could cause a lot of problems for your health. There are a lot of us that are overweight. The sugary drinks don’t help the fact that we are overweight. We should also get rid of the salty foods that are greasy.

    June 1, 2012 at 3:18 pm |
  257. Sarah

I think that having a ban on any 32 oz. drink is not the best idea, some people might not like the idea and get upset, people should be able to drink as much as they want. How much soda do you actually get with all the ice in it?

    June 1, 2012 at 3:19 pm |
  258. Alyssa

I think that banning sugary drinks is good, because they just want less people to get health problems. Lowering the amount of sugar when we have sugary drinks is one step further to having a healthier country.

    June 1, 2012 at 3:19 pm |
  259. Andrea

I think this is a good idea because nobody needs 32oz. of soda in one sitting. Some people don’t realize how much sugar is in 32oz. of soda. Restaurants should try serving healthier drinks such as fruit juices or flavored water.

    June 1, 2012 at 3:20 pm |
  260. Evan

I think that banning sugary drinks is good. If you look at statistics 44.1% of us are obese. Therefore banning sugary drinks is good.

    June 1, 2012 at 3:20 pm |
  261. Shania

I think that it’s a good idea to ban bigger soda drinks because if you look at America today, about 35% of us are obese, and all of that fat and sugar is coming from our bigger soda drinks and all of the other fatty and salty foods. Plus, the bigger soda drinks can wreck your teeth.

    June 1, 2012 at 3:20 pm |
  262. Hailey

I don’t think it’s a good idea to ban sugary drinks over 16 oz. because in most fast food restaurants you can go right back up there to get more soda so people are still able to drink over 16 ounces of soda either way. So if the government wants to ban it they can but it doesn’t mean the rate of obesity is going to change much if it changes at all.

    June 1, 2012 at 3:21 pm |
  263. snober

I think banning sugary drinks is an amazing idea because I think its healthier for adults and kids. I think it's healthier for adults and children because their getting less suger in their body so they don't get sick so often.

  264. Lizeth

I think that sugary drinks are not good for you. It can make you sick and it can even kill you. When you have too many sugar it makes you go crazy (younger kids).

    June 1, 2012 at 3:22 pm |
  265. Kyle

I don’t think they should ban bigger soda drinks. The people should have the right to have what they want. After all, it’s their body and it’s their own responsibility to have it the way they want.

  266. Enrique

I think that's a terrible idea. Why? Without sugar kids won't be happy. Whatever you do, do not ban soda! I'm begging you! p.s HI CARL AZUZ!!!

    June 1, 2012 at 3:24 pm |

  269. Jailyn

Hey Carl! I think that the idea might be great for some people but others might find it unfair that because they might only drink sugary drinks once in a while and might like to have the treat in a large size because some times they dont drink soda. But I think it's an amazing idea and help some people who have diabetes and can't drink a lot of sugar in their system and might get sick if they drink large size sodas. 🙂

    June 1, 2012 at 3:25 pm |
  270. Abbie

I believe this law would benefit people in the future because if people are getting obese now, it will continue even more, if we don't stop obesity now.

I think this a good idea because if the people get healthy maybe they will not band 16oz. sodas.

    June 1, 2012 at 3:26 pm |

I think it's a good idea to ban sugary drinks because sometimes when you drink too much soda or sprite or whatever, it has so much sugar you can get really hyper. Sometimes being hyper can be really bad. Kids should be drinking healthy drinks like juice. Even grown-ups should drink healthy.

    June 1, 2012 at 3:26 pm |

I think this a bad idea. It's basically just telling people not to drink soda. Everyone needs sugar!!!!!! It tastes good and you can't tell people what to drink and what not.

    June 1, 2012 at 3:29 pm |
  280. Gabriel

I think this will cause some commotion because people buying a drink should decide how big of drink they get. This is kind of reminding me of King George the 3rd and his Tea Act where he forced the colonists to buy and drink tea.

    June 1, 2012 at 3:30 pm |
  281. Fiza

I think you should and shouldn't ban soda because soda has sugar. Your body can make you very sick if you drink soda. Once and a while it is ok. It's awesomely tasty.

I think it's a great choice to ban sugary drinks because these sugary drinks are making children and adults are getting obese by these drinks, which is not ok for your body, you should keep your body in shape and be healthy.

    June 1, 2012 at 3:30 pm |
  284. Murtaza

I disagree with this ban. People should have a choice as to what they want to consume. I agree that pop isn't good for you, but you need calories in your body. I love pop, but without it, eating salty fries and big juicy cheeseburgers is tough.

    June 1, 2012 at 3:31 pm |
  285. Amy

I agree with banning sugary drinks because we want to stop the number of people who are obese. We want to have children to be healthy and not have their lives ruined because they have diabetes or something else.

    June 1, 2012 at 3:33 pm |
  286. Alyssa

I think it is good to ban sugary drinks simply because to many people are going obese because of sodas and all of the sugary substances are causing heart issues and cancer so I think that is a good idea no matter what other people think they should know that other people are trying to help you.

I disagree with a bann of sugary drinks. It's not someone else's job to tell you what to drink. It is your own job to tell yourself when enough is enough. I mean yea it's not great to have to much of sugar in your body because it's dangerous, but it's not another persons job to tell.

I agree with banning sugary drinks because we want to stop the number of people who are obese. We want to have children healthy and not have their lives ruined because they have diabetes or something else.

This is a bad idea. Everyone needs suger!!! People can't tell other people what to drink. This is a free country!!!

I agree that we should ban soda because drinking all that soda can cause black, swollen cavities and can damage your perfect, white teeth. In the future,it might even effect your strong health.

I think that’s a great idea. America is one of the most obese countries in the world. I think we have to put a stop to that.

I don’t think people should be thinking about sugary drinks right now they should be more worried about drugs and cigarettes, but I think it is ok to get rid of sugary drinks.

I think every state in the United states should ban having lots of soda from fast food places because costumers would already have lots of calories from what ever greasy food they had. I heard lots of sodas can cause really bad sicknesses that sometimes cause death.

    June 1, 2012 at 3:38 pm |
  295. Alexis

I am a 11 year old student and I think they should ban soda. Soda is not healthy. Many people drink soda, which makes you fat. We all should drink tea or water because in soda they put a lot of sugar and gas.

  296. Jafet

You shouldn't get rid of pop because kids won't be happy. Pop makes kids energized. Kids will be sad when they go to the movies if there is no pop there. It will ruin people's businesses!!!

I think this is a bad idea and a good one to ,I think it's good because think of obesity for a minute ,soda is a big problem it has to much sugar and can cause diabetes most people that are obese go to chain restaurant and buy large cups of soda.I think it is also a bad idea because it's not going to make much of a difference even if New York bans soda fron chain resturants people can simply go to the store and buy soda so it's not such a difference. Also some people don't even finish there soda and ends up in the garbage, you also have to be responsible for how much you drink if you, already drinked a big cup of soda and your going to buy another one that's being irresponsible,it all depends on the people and how much they drink.
P.S You rock Carl Azuz keep it up!:)

I agree with banning sugary drinks because many people are becoming obese and that can cause a lot of sicknesses. However, if banning sugary drinks turns into a law, it can cause a lot of money loss and can effect the economy.

    June 1, 2012 at 3:44 pm |
  299. Athena

I don't particularly like this idea, because if people want to drink certain things, they should not have that right taken away from them. If people want to drink those sugary drinks, then let them. They are doing it at their own personal risks.

    June 1, 2012 at 3:45 pm |

I think the mayor’s proposal should be passed as a law. If it is passed as a law though, the law should also say to not allow restaurants to give refills on these certain sugary drinks. Instead the restaurants should offer customers a healthy drink as a refill. One reason so many people are overweight is because they don’t know when to stop drinking sugary drinks. Drinking only one small sugary drink and a healthier drink as a refill at a restaurant would be a good start to helping people be healthier.

well the people get 22oz. will now get two 16oz.and thats alot more then 22oz. so i think that they should ban that ban

I think its a great idea. I just think that they should ban all soda and alcoholic beverages regardless of quantity. Yeah I know. I have heard this all before that people can drink what they want and blah, blah, blah, but unless they still want to have the nickname ' the birthplace of obesity' then they have got to change and banning hard and soft drinks is the way to do it.

    June 1, 2012 at 4:28 pm |
    • Dan

I don't like that idea. I am a New Yorker myself and I do not like this idea to ban soft drinks. My cousin does not like the idea to ban hard drinks. We do not drink sugar a lot. And New York may be the birthplace of obesity, but you can not be talking because we are not the most obese city.

i think we should have a vote to see if we should BAN on Sugary Drink

    June 1, 2012 at 4:31 pm |

I don't think they should because first of all everyone knows that americas meal is a burger some fries and a surgery soda. Also soda's are priced by their size if we take the large soda's away they will make less money and store's will have to fire people cause there's not enough money and there goes the unemployment rate even higher .

    June 1, 2012 at 4:43 pm |
  305. Sarah

No, do not go on with the ban. What you want to drink is your business. Plus, the government should not be banning too much.

If people want to load up on unhealthy drinks they can. One bottle is normally at least 16 ounces. It is a persons choice and they can decide what they drink.

    June 1, 2012 at 5:16 pm |
  311. Anynomous

I think it is a bad idea.. It is our own faults that we chose to drink the sugary drinks. I know I love mountain dew, but that is the most sugary soda you can get.. And if they pass a law on not to allow sugary drinks, I honestly think lots of people will then rely on Energy Drinks. Such as Monster, Red Bull, Rocksatr etc.

    June 1, 2012 at 5:19 pm |
  312. Nicky

America is a land of freedom. I believe that people shouldn't drink too many sugary drinks, but they do have the right to. The government doesn't have the right to stop people from drinking too much soda. It's a violation of our freedom.

    June 1, 2012 at 5:34 pm |
  313. Dylan

I think the sugary soda ban should not be put into effect because, if people want to have that much sugar they should be able to offer that much sugar, it's not like this idea is going to ban people from buying two regular soda's because if they really wanted to drink that much sugar in soda thats what they would do if large was not available! -(Saint Thomas Aquinas Academy)

  314. Anonymous

I think that, that is a ridiculous idea. I understand completely, that they want people to be healthy, but honestly, that's the overweight person's problem. Just because some people don't care about what they eat (or drink) and are overweight, doesn't mean that everyone else has to have things taken away from them. If drinks are banned, people are going to want them more anyways, and they will find a way to get them. I feel the same way about my school not selling cookies anymore because kids are getting fat and parents are complaining about it. If parents don't like what there kids are eating, then they need to take care of it themselves.
I guess you could say I feel pretty strongly about this.

I completly diagree. This is just stupid! 😡 Frist people sould eat what they want not what our goverment tells them. This is a free country. So what people are obese. It is not only the diets that have an effect on weight, todays work does now. In the early 1900's most of the counrty worked on farms. Now i behind a desk. Also this may hurt our encomny. The three biggest pop comapines are here in the US. They contruibte alot to the economy. With us drinking less they los alot of money. ( we are the second country who drinks the mos tsoda.)

Well I can't tell if we have to ban surgary drinks that's more than 16 ounces because it really depends on how much you drink it. But they are basically telling what to drink or not to us. In other hands it will really help people from getting a lot of sugar.

As I watch CNN Student News with my class almost everyday I know that sugar creates lipids that stores fat. And my theory is that the fatter you are the less you want to exercise (unless you have a large motivation) the less exercise you get the less lactate you can build up. Since lactate is a high energy source and it is also sent to the brain, heart, liver, and other organs it may have an educational effect because the lactate wouldn't be sent to the brain. (As you may see I study A LOT).

I think what there doing is right because it showing us that the care for us and want to help us by saying when you have to much sugary drinks that are a large size that its not good you will get illness like cancer and other horriabel things. Thats when there showing us that they want to band it to helping us.

    June 1, 2012 at 8:13 pm |

I think this is wrong, because everyone should be able to pick what size sodas you get to drink. I never remembered this country being a communist country.

  329. dani

i dont think banning large drinks should not be allowed. Your the one putting the sugar and carolies in your body so why would anyone elese care, it your life. if you dont want people putting bad chemicals in their body ban alcohol

    June 1, 2012 at 8:21 pm |
  330. Helena

On one hand, people should be allowed to make choices for themselves. If they want to indulge in treats that may be harmful to them, that's their choice. However, it is true that it would be better for the people if those bad options were out of the picture. And probably the reason the big corporations are against it, is because they'll lose money if it's banned. Not because they really care.

I think its a great idea because this helps so many Americans with diet problems. It makes us be more healthy, active, and be an overall better person. Even little things like this can make a big difference in society.

I think it's a good idea but it would kind of feel like the law is making decision for other people that they should make myself. But the problem there is that people have a hard time making the right decision.

    June 1, 2012 at 9:37 pm |
  338. Cian

this plan is flawed. if you ban large amonnnts of sugary drinks people would just get their sugar from candy or other things so you would also have to ban these things as well.

  340. Ayush

Restaurants like McDonald Offer unlimited soda ( you could have as many as you want in the cup, again and again.). So I think that the idea won't work, people will buy small cups, but still drink more.

    June 1, 2012 at 10:38 pm |
  341. Ravi

I think they should ban sugary drinks because after school kids usually go to McDonald's and if a kid orders food its likely that they will get a drink with it and the drinks have alot of sugar so it its cause obesity and if you have obesity and because of the sugary drinks kids will grow up and they will also be obese. This is why i think that they should certainly ban sugary drinks. I also think McDonald's should take away the sugary drinks and try to make drinks that are much more healthier, but taste as good.

    June 1, 2012 at 10:53 pm |
  342. Jesse

i thnk banning sugary drinks over sixteen ounces is not a good idea. What is going to stop people from buying two or more smaller drinks that equal thirty two or more ounces?

    June 1, 2012 at 10:55 pm |
  343. Becca

I think that this is unfair. People have a right and the freedom to make choices for themselves. If this becomes a law, then they are taking away that freedom and right that we have as american citizens.

    June 1, 2012 at 11:03 pm |
  344. Valerie

I think with health issue's it is a great idea, but people should be able to choose what kind of health they want and what size drink they want. It is their decision on what kind of health they have and if they choose to have a good health they will just order a small drink anyways.

    June 1, 2012 at 11:04 pm |
  345. Jordan

It's kind of both ways. We all have, or should have, the freedom of choice. But at the same time we should all have the common sense to know what's healthy and what's not.

    June 1, 2012 at 11:07 pm |
  346. Emma

Soda is like achohol- the first few drinks are ok, but an overdosage can definetly hurt your health. Unlike achohol, a couple of Coca-Cola's may not damage your attitude but arer hurting your body in different ways.

    June 1, 2012 at 11:08 pm |
  347. Livija

Well I think it really dosen't matter if it is a law or not because even with 16oz of sugary drinks don't forget at most restauramts they give FREE refills!

    June 1, 2012 at 11:12 pm |
  348. Kelly

I think it's a great idea since children now a days eat or drink too muck sugary items already. A change in America isn't bad when the health of our children and future generations will be healthier. Yet a bigger desire for soda will happen to soda drinkers. So I think soda should just have a limit, and natural fruit juices should be a greater replacement.

    June 1, 2012 at 11:27 pm |
  349. Leanne

The government can try as hard as they can to try and create a healthy life style for people, but what it really comes down to is people's personal decisions. If the government put a limit on soda people will find loopholes in their laws, like buying more than one or getting just refills. I don't think the government should make peoples decisions for them about how much to eat or drink.

    June 1, 2012 at 11:35 pm |
  350. Selvi

People should be able to have sugary drinks because they're the ones who are making the decisions to risk possible illnesses.

    June 2, 2012 at 1:22 am |
  351. Marc

I think that they should not make it a law. It is a choice to get a large drink over a small drink. No one forces you to buy a 32oz drink.

    June 2, 2012 at 1:25 am |
  352. Salma

Michael Bloomberg Does have a point on something. Its true that most adults are over weight because of sugar drinks, But If he does succeed on that, Adults may be sugar low. Its important to have sugar in our body, Adults just need to know how much to digest.

By cutting down on soft drink sizes may reduce obesity. If consumers want more soda then they can get a refill or order more.

I think this is a good rule. Kids need to have energy but not from soda.
Soda has high fructose corn syrup in it and will make you fat and make
    you fat.

    June 2, 2012 at 9:10 am |
  357. Noah

I don't think think they should ban the drinks, just make them more expensive.

    June 2, 2012 at 10:46 am |
  358. Nina

Instead of banning the drink sizes and limiting people's freedoms through this law, give people information. At Subway, on the back of their napkins they inform you of what you are eating. Do the same with our sugary drinks! If people know what is going into them, they might stop and think about it first. It's simple, put up a few posters advertising what is in the product and what is recommended according to your calorie comsupption. Or, in the world of technology we have today, offer an app providing you with this information. This solution would make both sides of the argument happy.

    June 2, 2012 at 10:59 am |
  359. Ina

Banning sugary drinks will help bring down obesity in New York along with other health problems. If the consumer wants more to drink then they can buy more soda or get a refill.

    June 2, 2012 at 1:32 pm |

I think it's the best idea he has because a lot of people may be attatched to larger sizes instead of small or medium ones and most of them might not be able to control themselves from getting the larger ones.

  363. Amanda

I don't like this idea. Yes, almost more than half of our population is obese or overweight but still, if the mayor takes away the large drinks, what's gonna save us from getting up and getting a refill, or wasting paper/plastic when you throw away a small soda and go buy another one? I think that its a very good idea at the moment because personaly i don't like soda, and that if they didn't, the problem could only get worse, and have the outcomes of: limiting how much soda we can drink, having specific age groups for drinking soda, having less soda brands, and the worst: banning of soda in places such as: movie theaters, vendors, pop machines, and fast food restaurants.

I dont think this is a good idea because some people need sugary drinks for medicial problems.

    June 2, 2012 at 7:01 pm |
  372. Jahnavi

Maybe they should put a certain amount of sugar not a lot but an amount that obesity can't take over but could handle. This can help the obese people and the very emaciated people will also have the same amount of sugar that the obese people are having. This can prevent obesity ruling over or emaciation can't back up. If Mayor Bloomberg cuts down on sugary drinks then the obese people will have a withdrawal for sugar. They can hurt people to get the sugary drinks and the skinny people will be struggling for food and fat for their body.

    June 2, 2012 at 8:40 pm |
  373. Apsara

This rule is a great idea because the obesity and sugar levels in the states are rising dramatically, and it would help if they (NYC) could cut that level down a bit. Plus, if you eat/drink too much sugar, you could go to sleep after an annoying sugar rush or have a painful stomachache and headache.

    June 2, 2012 at 9:06 pm |
  374. Alexus

I think it is a great idea because more people die from being obese and it's the number one problem that people die from too much sugar in anything they eat.

  375. Mayson

Some people buy larger drinks to share because its alot cheaper. And i don't think that the government should be able to choose what people eat or drink.

Why do that anway its so crazy since they might ban 2 liter bottles which is how some people can have a glass of pop without going to a resturant and getting something.

    June 3, 2012 at 12:42 am |
  378. Amir

I don't like this idea because if you are obese or overweight you should be able to tell yourself not to get it. It is support to be your choice your choice to buy pop or not not the laws choice.

    June 3, 2012 at 12:51 am |
  379. Liam

Its a two-way street. Yes the drinks are bad for you. They may make you overweight and cause health problems, but the government shouldnt be able to control what you purchase at a restuarant. It is 100% up to the consumer what he or she wants to eat or drink.

    June 3, 2012 at 4:30 am |
  380. Claire

I don't think they should because people who drink sugary drinks are taking the risk of getting unhealthy even though they know that sugary drinks are bad. And if you don't drink sugary drinks too often, then I think it would be okay 🙂

    June 3, 2012 at 7:20 am |
  381. Bella

There are pro's and con's to this idea I suppose. The pro's being that with the lack of carbonated drinks, I'm nearly positive the obesity in adults would decrease, and if the phrase 'monkey-see-monkey-do' plays any significance than the youth in New York would also have a positive benefit from the banning. The only con being the backlash of the people however.

i disagree with this idea because the people should make their own choices, it's not the governments choice on how much soda we drink!

They really shouldn't make the ban. It's not fair to the people who ARE on a good diet. It wouldn't really help you lose weight anyways. You have to exercise along with good eating habits to really be able to lose weight. Helping one samall thing won't do much. It's like washing only the door handle on a dirty car.

This idea may help our population of obese people in New York, but may have a affect on people who may need sugar in their blood stream.

I like the Idea because then you can get smaller portions at a time not huge ones which is better so then its hethier that way.

I think they should ban large amounts of sugary drinks because it very unhealthy for the public and people would have a chance to live longer.

I think sugary drinks shouldn't be ban because people need a little sugar to get energized.

I think it's a bad idea. I know that some people don't drink soda and think it should be banned but some people like soda and think that soda shouldn't be banned. I think that it should be the people's decision if they want to drink soda or not.

I don't think they should ban sugary drinks, it's the obese person's fault for drinking so much sugary drinks. Besides, it won't help either, people might just go and buy even more soda than they do in resturants, that will make the problem worse and it might cause more people being broke

Well, I like to think of it as cigarettes, they're not banned, but they do have a warning label on them, it should be that way with soda, warn them by stating the risks. It wouldn't do much, but I think it would still be effective for this version to be put out there
