Unusual Thanksgiving Traditions

When do you plan to start your holiday shopping?
Some folks get up at the crack of dawn on Thanksgiving Day for a community race.  Some get up at the crack of dawn on Black Friday to start their holiday shopping.  And some try to outdo those folks by lining up to shop at midnight on Thanksgiving.

Next week, I'm planning a report on some of the unusual Thanksgiving traditions that don't seem to have anything to do with that first feast in 1621.  Whether it's bowling frozen turkeys, frying thawed turkeys, or passing up turkey for another meal altogether, we know there are a lot of offbeat traditions out there.

Tell us yours!

I will go to the mall for shopping in the morning on Thanksgiving Day. I can get a lot of cheaper goods on that day. So I can buy whatever I want such as the new laptop, new clothes, new shoes, new school bags even. In my opinion, I will have a good day at that moment ! Just enjoy the rare discount everywhere. I love it .

I will play with my friends and held a party with my classmates . It will be interesting, isn't it ? hah,my parents promised to me, they will go shopping with me. It is a long time before my last shopping together with my parents. I am enjoying staying with my parents and looking forward to the Thanksgiving Day's coming.

Every year we go on top of the house and start yelling the words to the chicken dance while also doing the chicken dance. Then later we go to my favorite restaurant to eat turduckin. A chicken inside of a duck inside of a turkey.

There are a lot of wierd traditions on the Earth, but my family is kind of wierd. All the other boys go and sit down and watch the football games while I help all the moms and girls in the kitchen with the food. I love to help cook! I feel kind of weird.

well my family has a very traditional thanksgiving week.

    Monday:clean the house.

Tuesday:buy all the food for the dinner

Wednsday:prepare all food to be cooked, and thats when all of the out of town people come to the house.

Thursday: big day everybody cooks something, then feast time

Friday : spend time with the family, then we all go out shopping

Saturday: go out either to the movies or somewhere fun

Sunday: we chill at home all day and going back home, and start living our normal lives.

People have different traditions and celebrate in many ways but even if it doesnt relate to the original feast, its up to them on how to celebrate this holiday.

every thanksgiving my brother has this weird tradition of putting on a skit in which he acts as if he's lost his memory of who he is and who the rest of his family is.

Even though creating funky traditions on Thanksgiving doesn't have anything to do with the original Thanksgiving, it makes our nation unique from all of the other traditional nations, and I think that is pretty cool.

I don't have much of a Thanksgiving tradition. When i go to Maryland, we go bowling Thanksgiving morning. On Christmas though, we watch A Christmas Story. I know almost all the linea because this tradition has been going on forever! We also give each other an ornament that signifies something big that has happened to us this year.

The way I celebrate Thanksgiving is with my friends and family and give thanks to each other and to the Lord as well. Thanksgiving was and still is a momentous occasion that the pilgrims brought when they were on the Mayflower and shared food and joy with the Indians as we do today with each other and we're so glad that Thanksgiving became such a wonderful and joyous holiday too.

This year, shoppers and buyers will be overloading stores and causing rampages to get whatever they need that's on sale dramatically. Black Friday, not green is a holiday to just waste your delicate money on worthless groceries anyways.

Usually, my family takes time to do many things on Thanksgiving. We buy a turkey, chicken, and duck and we bake all that in side of the turkey. We call it "TURKENCK". After we finish dinner,we have pumpkin pie,and disscuss what we will do for Black Friday. At 10:00 we take our sleeping bags, blankets, pillows and many other items. We also bring our leftovers,so when we are "shopstruck" we take a break and eat.My family usually finishes at 3:30 so, that is really the time we go over to my friends house and sleepover.
This year we have a change of plans......

I'm from South Korea, and Koreans eat a cake that is made up of rice which is named "songpyeon". They put some small crops in there. It's really tasty. And, Koreans dance "kangkangsulae" which is our traditional dancing. And many of Koreans wish their dreams to come true staring at semicircle moon. And we wear "hanbok", the beautiful and colorful traditional wearing in Thanksgiving day in Korea.

There are not many out-of-the-ordinary traditions that my family share, but we do enjoy cooking a nice big turkey while the Macy's Parade plays in the background on are TV. I don't know if this is unusual, but to some people, it might be. Well the last two Thanksgivings' my family (including me) moved the dining table to the front room. then we moved the couch and the carpet (which belong to the living room) into the dining room. To me the first time I saw it like that those two room's looked weird. I hope we do that again on this Thanksgiving.

I think that it's the people choice of when they can go shopping and when they can't. But in my opinion, the shopping holiday is called Black Friday, not Black Thursday. So all the stores should open at the same time they opened last year.

I know you may like to shop on black friday but what about workers. They might not even get to eat Thanksgiving dinner with their family because they need sleep. I think black friday should be either moved and still be early or open later.

My friends and I would play games like catch the turkey. In catch the turkey, you would assign a people to be the turkey and the rest would catch the turkeys. We would then play other games that are very exciting. We eat turkey and ham, and we all play with eachother till midnight. Once it is close to midnight, we would all get in the cars and go shopping!

My Thanksgiving Holiday Traditions includes my dad and my brother getting up early and going deer hunting with my popa, my uncles, and my cousins. My mom, my sisters and I stay at home and prepare for the feast. The 27 lb. pound turkey goes in the oven bright and early in the morning. We peel potatoes, make the salad, cut vegetables, and make pies. A couple hours later you can smell the mouth watering smell of the turkey roasting! By 9:00 am we have turned on the TV to the Macy's day parade. Family starts to arrive by 1 and we spend our relaxing day together eating, playing games, and enjoy each other’s company. Of course the best part is eating the turkey, gravy, stuffing, and mashed potatoes. This is how I spend my thanksgiving with my family 🙂

In my family we usually don't just eat traditional thanksgiving food. We like to eat Filipino food and Mexican food. We also do a thanksgiving gift exchange and we make it a game. The kids all roll dice and whatever number you get thats the present you get. The gifts can be stolen too, which makes it fun.

On Thanksgiving, me and my family play a game after we finish eating. We get a really big spoon, then start passing it around the table. When it gets passed to you, you put a piece of your leftover food on it. If the spoon is full, you just have to get creative! Maybe you could rub butter on the handle. But be careful! If you drop it, you have to eat everything on the spoon!

Thanksgiving is about being with your family and friends. And having a good time. I don't think it's right to go shopping on thanksgiving. When your shopping, your not spending time with your family and friends.

Well, I don't really have a wacky Thanksgiving tradition, but last year, I didn't even have turkey! My family ate steak instead. And it shouldn't matter if you have a wacky tradition, it only matters that you spend the holidays with people that you love.

I always go over to have Thanksgiving with my Dad's side. Every year, family members bring lots of food and we stuff ourselves. The next day, I eat even more food with my Mom's side of the family! That's a lot of turkey!

On Thanksgiving, my mom, dad, sister, grandmother, great grandmother, grandfather, and I , make dinner together. Then we have a turkey that we always name Pablo. We name him Pablo because, in Spanish pavo means turkey and pavo sounds like Pablo. Then, all throughout dinner my grandfather sings songs about Pablo that he made up while eating. Our Thanksgiving is always amazing.

I would eat usually like anybody else on thanksgiving with my family. But I WOULD NEVER SHOP on Black Friday because every single family in the world goes Christmas shopping after thanksgiving and the stores are packed. And all the early shoppers take everything good, and in my opinion, I would want to sleep in on Black Friday- a day off. Forget me, I can shop 3 to 4 days before Christmas when the stores have the clearances are.

On Thanksgiving, our family has a "Thanksgiving Bowl" in our backyard. We use ripped up pieces of cloth (which are usually decorated with turkeys or other thanksgiving designs) and play flag football. It's usually my dad and brother against my mom, and us (boys against girls). Our "In Zones" are usually a section of a fence and the clothesline. Whichever team wins, gets an extra big or sometimes even another piece of pumpkin or pecan pie. We've been doing this for about 4 years now and it is so much fun!

My family makes turducken, which is a de-boned chicken, stuffed into a de-boned duck, stuffed into a de-boned turkey. The rest of the hollow spaces are filled with either sausage or bread, but we usually use bread. It may sound disgusting, but it really tastes good!

for my family we have a big Ham in stead of Turkey. Also we usually get up late and have to start making food as soon as we get up because it is like 10. So our Thanksgiving dinner usually gets later and later

Thanksgiving is a time to be thankful and be happy for what we have. I feel like everyone is forgetting the meaning of the Thanks in Thanksgiving. So, every Thanksgiving I get together with my family and we have a big feast. We all take time to show how greatful we all are. Then we make lots of more food and give the leftovers and the new feast to the food shelters. It's our way of giving back and showing our greatfulness.

    November 20, 2011 at 4:23 pm |

I’m not sure if I would refer to my family’s Turkey Day traditions as weird, but do what you will. Of course all week until Thanksgiving, my mom’s in her crazy cleaning “make sure the house is spotless top to bottom” mode, then on Thanksgiving Day, the whole family gets together to celebrate. The girls usually do the most of the cooking besides the Turkey, which my dad usually does, and the boys, no surprise, will watch football until dinner is done. We eat, everyone helps clean up, and then to the living room we all go to continue watching football and our every year “after Thanksgiving” naps!

In honor of the history of Thanksgiving, my family dresses up as Pilgrims and Native Americans. I like to be Squanto. We buy three wild turkeys every year from our local turkey farmer. We then set the turkeys loose in our field and chase them around with hatchets until we find the unlucky turkey who we are going to feast on. The other two earn their freedom and we give them maize as a reward.

I have two different family traditions. When I go to my grandma's house she always makes a big feast and makes sure she has fudge and turkey. We gather the whole family and camp out on her 5 acres of land. It is lots of fun and very crowded. When I go to my grandfather's house he makes a turkey and we stay the night. It is also very very crowded there but not nearly as much as when we're at my grandma's house. It is not as fun there as it is at my grandma's house because because he has a small yard. All together I have a wild ride and three different turkeys.

I really have a CRAZY Thanksgiving and you might think it's not, but I usually have to try something new and it's usually something nasty. I've tried scallops, pickled cucumbers (not pickles), refried beans, and a bunch of stuff that should be in a toxic waste dump. I hope I don't gag or puke like every year I have to try something new. The other thing I have to do is go shopping with my aunt on Black Friday and all you hear is, "I want that!", "That's nasty!", "That is the weirdest thing on Earth!", and a bunch of other stuff I HATE. I have a crazy Thanksgiving. 🙂

I call them them whip cream. Because whip cream is good. I think every one should eat whip cream for every thing. And with pie of course.

Thanksgiving is a time to be happy for what we have and to appreciate the times we have as familys. Some people dont have to oppertunity to have a full thanksgiving meal so we should enjoy what we have. Every thanksgiving i go to my grandmas house and all of my aunts and uncles are there and even my cousins that are in college. We all sit on the couch and watch some football and play games or even go outside. No matter what what thanksgiving will always be about being thankfull for what you have, and be thankfull for being there with your family and friend.

When me and my family has Thanksgiving we will usually all go outside and play a big football game. Or otherwise if we don't play football we will play a big game of kick ball and usually the team who has the kids on the side will easily win. But the adults don't take it very easy on us.

    November 21, 2011 at 2:34 pm |
  348. Gabe

My family doesn’t really have any unusual thanksgiving traditions. The only thing that we do is all the family that comes to visit and we go to my grandmas. Then we just sit around talking waiting for the turkey dinner to be done. The best part of the day I think is the eating part. We get doubled eggs, turkey, cranberries, stuffing and potato salad. Then the best part of the meal comes….pumpkin pie. We just have a normal family gathering for thanksgiving nothing unusual. Which in my opinion is a little bit better than having some big extravagant tradition.

Weirdly enough, we take the turkeys, (cooked, and because we are vegetarians) and go to a mountain. Once we went to the other side of the country! But then we drop them over the cliff, and watch them fall. Then we discuss thankfulness. The longest it once took was 5 minutes to fall to the bottom!

Our family usually doesn't have a unusual Thanksgiving tradition. Usually we just go to my mom parents house and eat and sit around and watch movies and talk. At my dads we go to my dads moms and eat and then usually talk and hang around my grandmas place for the day or go out and do something or us grandkids might go outside and play games or football depending on the weather. At my grandparents we sometimes take naps and watch football or go to my aunt and uncles house to see them and the rest of the family.

Every year the day after Thanksgiving (Black Friday,) me and my family drive down to the woods where it is snowing, grab our scarfs, and search the woods for the perfect tree. My brothers chop it down and we tie it to the top of our car. My dog is always running around the woods and it takes us a couple of minutes to find him, and then we get in our car and drive home. At home, we set up the Christmas tree and we all help each other put the ornaments on. It's not about what you do for Thanksgiving, no matter how weird it is, but the most important thing about this holiday, is spending time with the people you love and being around your friends and just being thankful for what you have, not what you don't have.

My family usually goes to my aunts and has thanksgiving dinner and we spend the day together talking about funny stories, playing with little cousins. But one thanksgiving day a bunch of my cousin and I went to shoot some blue rocks and had a contest to see who could shoot the most blue rocks. It was pretty funny to watch us all shoot for the same one but we had fun doing it and there was a bird flying around so we tried to shoot it but we didn’t want to get the bird a heart attack, it didn’t matter who won or not all that we know is that we had a great time and it’s just matter so spent time with your family and being there for one another.

My family is pretty typical in our thanksgiving traditions. My mom tries to clean the house all week long, but its normally such a task that she ends up getting up at the crack of dawn Thursday morning to finish cleaning. My mom, grandma, and aunt spend the week before deciding who will make what. Usually though, it ends up the same. My grandma always makes the turkey, my aunt a desert and stuffing, and my mom everything else. All my aunts, uncles, cousins, and other family members gather at my house to start the feast at noon sharp. After dinner we sit stuffed into my families little living room and dining room watching football and talking. For supper my mom always boils the turkey bones and makes turkey and rice soup.

I am so happy that my mom makes great food or I think Thanksgiving would be really weird. But I am also happy that I get to have it with my family. Thanksgiving and Christmas would not ever be as great as it is when they are there and we eat together and we have our presents opened together and it just feels like it was made so we can have it with the ones we love!:)

Thanksgiving was originated when English pilgrims fought with Indians to take over a neighboring tribe then they had a great feast. But now most people recognize Thanksgiving as a time for shopping and "Black Friday" but they are getting it confused with the the true virtue of Thanksgiving...Peace and joy.

I don't really have any unusual thanksgiving trdition, such as the very first one. However, every Thanksgiving my family and I go to my aunt's house for our huge family dinner. Instead of turkey, mashpotatoes, and all that good stuff we have a meal entirely different. My aunt would order pizza, we would have a lot of desserts of chocolate. Since my family loves chocolate, we can never have a family get-together without that. It wouldn't be my family if they didn't have chocolate!

In our family, on Thanksgiving, we trade of who is going to have everyone over that day. Usually we would just hang out and eat turkey, but when I was little my cousins and I would act out a skit. My brother was never happy about doing them, so he pretended to be the turkey.

On Thanksgiving we go to one of our uncle's house. We usually go swimming next. If we don't we do it on Black Friday. Shopping doesn't usually occur at our house. We have turkey, but I don't eat it. The mashed potatos and chicken stroganoff are my favorite things at our Thanksgiving potlock. Nothing goes wrong. Sometimes we play pin the feathers on the turkey.

One of the things I do on thanksgiving is go to my cousin Chris house and have a thanksgiving dinner with the rest of the family there.
We would have turkey and other good things to eat and after words we would some times play different card games and play other types of game on the television and talk to each about different things.

My grandma makes thanksgiving dinner before Thanksgiving. I would jump out of my bed smelling the food. MY family Mostly has Thanks giving at around 2:00. In my dinning room, we are not allowed to in the dinning toom, but at Thanksgiving we get to eat on the dinning room table, made out of carved wood. My aunt always brings her specil cheesy potatos, that everybody loves. After dinner we all sit in my living room, and tell jokes or stories. The time flies by, and it is time for everybody to go home, but we all know that we had a great time together!

I think that people who have weird traditions should be left alone.Since they might have inherited it from their from ancestors.People even might just like doing strange things ,and might be offended because they don't understand.

I believe that some families do have strange traditions but as long as they're with their family it should'nt matter.I don't see why they do it but they do and if they keep doing it then they must be having fun doing it.So the way i see it is that if people are thankful, with their family, and having fun then it is a great Thanksgiving.

My family doesn't really do anything unusual. We drive to my Uncle's house and eat. Then we go outside and chill. Sometimes we watch a movie or two before going back to eating the pies.Yum! :] If there is anything abnormal that we do, I haven't figured it out yet.

Every year on Thanksgiving, I would go to my grandma and grandpa's house and hangout with my uncle and aunt's dog. I would also sit down and watch TV with my family, and we would sometimes go down to the lake and sit in the boathouse. Then we would go back up to the house and have turky, potatoes, and rolls for the Thanksgiving dinner.

Last year I went to Arizona to see the Grand Canyon I ate "turkey" there. This year we're going to Memphis, TN. It seems that we always go out of town. Sometimes my grand parents come over but that's when we're in town. Also I don't understand why Thanksgiving changed, but I could see adding the turkey.

I feel thanksgiving is a time for cheerfulness with your family. On thanksgiving my family normally has ham and not turkey. Then everyone has to bring a dish to eat. After that we either play pit or poker and have dessert the women are normally in the living room talking with each other while I play with the men I never knew that can be so much fun. Then we eventually leave and go Christmas shopping.

What I do for Thanksgiving is my family and friends all come to this one park and we play tackle football. Although we are not doing it this year because it is a big game for the Packers I don't mind.
Another holiday tradition is we always have turkey.
Also last year my grandpa made a mess up so it was not the best Thanksgiving.
Since it snowed one year for our football game I made a pretty big snow ball.
I wish everybody at CNN a happy Thanksgiving.

Then the parents sit at the table and talks and talks and talks. We might play with my dog and walk around the neighbor hood. The last thing we do is have a piano recital. Then everybody leaves. After everyone is gone we have a huge mess to clean up.

My Thanksgiving is pretty mellow exept for the fact that when we are done with the pies my brother and I sometimes throw the pies in each others face before we leave our family members house.Like most families we sit down to say our prayers and thank god for the life we have now. I would like to send food to orphans and homless people and people who are struggling in life for a Thanksgiving feast so they can have the feeling we have when we are sitting down with our siblings. I would also need some help for those people who are in need of food. So I might have a bit of a challenge or it might be too late.

But we have ham, sea food, duck, sweet poato pie, and bread. We always look though the adds and once your 11 in our family or older you can go black Friday shopping. We always do a show for every one and we celabrate December birthday's since the other wise we do it on Decmber 25 and it you do with Christmas morning. We always have our Christmas list started and finished. The girls stay in one room and do one thing and the boys are in another and watch the football games. We also pull a name out of a hat once your an adult so that is the person you buy there christmas list. This year we are going to have you pull out the christmas list and you wouldn't know who got you . No madar what you give the person you christmas list. We also go to my other gandparents house and do the same thing but this time we get to eat turky since my other grandma has no allargies.

My Thanksgiving this year is where I'm driving to my aunt and uncle's house, and staying there for a couple of days. Every Thanksgiving we get up extremely early, and we all eat a bowl of cereal, and my brothers, dad, and I always help mom make all of the desserts, and the stuffing and turkey and of course, mashed patatoes and gravy. We let the meals cool, and since we'll have three others to help out this year, we can finish around four or five. We rest until six or seven, and then set the table and all of the trays of foods out. Starved, we pray a very, very, very long prayer, sometimes when I open my eyes the cookies are gone and my older brothers' faces are covered in crumbs, and then.... We devour it and laugh and joke, and we gather at the couch and watch a bunch of movies. That's my strange- sort of- Thanksgiving tradition.

Every thanksgiving I go to my cousins house in the bronx and we go out have a great time. Then we come home eat rest and get prepared for the next day. There is always something fun happening the next day. Last year we went to thanksgiving. Usually thanksgiving is about being thankful. But people just eat. So me and my cousins just go out and have fun. Thats the true meaning of thanksgiving having fun and being with people you love ( and being thankful ) : )

Our family traditions are kinda strange before we go shopping we do a funny dance then we invite our family and friends to come and when they do we do kart wheels if you are under 55 and when we are done with that we balance gravy in a bowl (plastic) on our head to see who gets to serve food if you keep it on your head longest and like it is so fun to serve the food because at the end instead of getting rid of our food we have a messy surprise we have a giant food fight in our kitchen........ when we are done with that we go to our back yard and we throw flour at each other and we also get some eggs and we balance them on a spoon and have races down the road.........................I love my family traditions..............I bet no one else has that tradition ha........ :p

My meal this Thanksgiving will include three turkeys!!
Every year my time is spent first with my close family for lunch- one turkey.
Later, my mom, sister and I travel to my aunt's house and eat with our cousins for dinner – two turkeys.
That yearly tradition is a time welcomed to spend time with some important people we do not regularly see. This year, a third turkey will be needed. That just means a little more time with family!

My Family, we all get together. and bring our new boy/girl friends, or any new family member, and we eat a huge meal, of Turkey, Ham, and all the good stuff. But the most funniest part of it is. That my cousins and myself, go outside and either play EXTREME Tag, or play Hide & Seek , in the Dark.. XD. It may be childish, but its fun to kid, and be with the ones you care about. SO WHO CARES WHAT CHILDISH GAME WE PLAY? We all laugh at ourselves. That's what it all matters anyway.

My Thanksgiving traditions aren’t much, if any at all. We eat lunch as a family and then we watch Television the rest of the day. Later that night we get together and share stories from when we were younger, it gets pretty humorous at times. Then we play games, some card games, some board games. It isn’t much, but that is what my family does for Thanksgiving. We have never gone Black Friday shopping; my family isn’t interested in fighting over gifts or other items. If we want an item we usually just wait to buy it. I know some people enjoy the drama of Black Friday but not me, some camp out for weeks before Black Friday even starts; personally I think it is ridiculous. I also feel bad for the employees who have to work , they even feel they are getting their Thanksgiving taken away, I think Thanksgiving is a time for thanks, so why not take this Thanksgiving and thank those people using their holiday to work.

My family and I don't bowl frozen turkeys but I do however do some unusual things around this holiday. Just before the big feast my family shares what we are thankful for...that's pretty normal, but when it comes to the feast my family has... ham because my dad is allergic to turkey. Pie, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and green-bean casserole.

I wake up in time for the Thanksgiving parade and help my family cook. Sometimes we even take the skin from the turkey and put it on our face while making funny noises. It might not be the most wackiest tradition, but it has a lot to do with spending time with family. We students spend so much time in school that times like these, that's all we should be focused on. Family.

It doesn't matter if you have crazy traditions. All that matters is that you spend a day with the people you love. That's what a real holliday is!

my family and i usually have thanksgiving on thursday every year since '05. we usually eat turkey and/or chicken but this time we decided not to celebrate it i don't know why. once we had hot wings with shrimp fried rice on thanksgiving. the way we spend our thanksgiviing when we have it is telling my friends and some church members to come over and we give thanks and finally have a "feast" usually after that we all just watch tv or go back to what we were all doing.

For my family, Thanksgiving is not just about the meal. Yes, we stuff ourselves with all the delicious foods, we always watch The Day After Tomorrow. Frankly, I do not like apocalypse movies, but this reminds us of what we should be thankful for. We do not have to worry about freezing currents or multiple tornadoes, and frankly, I am VERY thankful for that.

Every Thanksgiving my family and I have a great big meal. We always have some friends over to enjoy it with. Our big tradition is that every Thanksgiving night, we set up our Christmas tree. It's a great way to spend time with my family and after all that's what Thanksgiving is about. 🙂

My meal this Thanksgiving will include three turkeys!!
Every year my time is spent first with my close family for lunch- one turkey.
Later, my mom, Brother and I travel to my aunt's house and eat with our cousins for dinner – two turkeys.
That yearly tradition is a time welcomed to spend time with some important people we do not regularly see. This year, a third turkey will be needed. That just means a little more time with family!
