Sugary Drinks on Campus

A study you'll hear about on Wednesday suggests that it may not matter whether "sugary" drinks are allowed at school; students drank them anyway when they weren't on campus.  So here's my question:  Should schools with bans start to allow the sales of sugary drinks again?  Or do you think a campus ban helps discourage childhood obesity?

i think that only a few days out of the week they let the kids get one drink and that's it! obesity is a big problem in America and the only way we can stop that from happening is if we take it away.

I think that schools should allow students to drink on campus. Because some kids haven't had no breakfast !

i think that it okay cause they deserve to be known because if it wasnt for them, we wouldnt be here. So think its a good thing to do. there the one that help us when we need help so they deserve to be known.

No i think even with a ban that people will stop drinking sugary drink. The only way to have them not drink to much sugary drinks is for the parents to not let them have to much.

Well, most kids these days spend most of their time at school. So if the schools kept their ban of sugary drinks, it would discourage childhood obesity. More than half of America is obese anyway, and we don't need more big bellies to fill.

I think that kids should be able to drink sugary drinks for lunch and or snak not for PE or recess. Because sugary drinks could make kids Esther not prefom well or get tirde.

what is the point of baning surger dranks form students when teachers drank then to so they should just unban them form school period

I think that the campus should not recomend the sugary drink but it is NOT needed to be banned. The right and kids will make the good choices. They should learn to cope with the things they want to have which they shouldn't have.

Does it really matter? It's not the school's choice about the kids' diets.

Schools should not ban sugary drinks. I understand they would think about it because some students get "hyper" after drinking something sugary. But students can still have sugary drinks so it doesn't really matter.

i think schools should allow some sugary drinks like fruit juices, but not stuff like pop. its ok to have some sugar but there also is a lot of caffeine in pop so i think that fruit juice is ok but not stuff like pop

I think schools should not sell sugary drinks. Schools should have food that is good for you. But what ever you eat or drink is your choice so make a healthy choice. Schools should make healthy choices so you will be more healthy.

I think kids should be able to chose what to drink.

    Schools should offer sugary drinks.

To solve obesity we must start at the homes, not the schools. Bringing sugary drinks back to school will help sales at the school. Since the kids will buy the drinks from the school instead of stores.

I say that they should let sodas come back to campus. As Carl said it did not effect the amount that the students drank . also it will just make them crave for it more.

    November 8, 2011 at 7:37 pm |
  23. Chase

I think that schools should have soda sometimes but not all the time. It will perk kids up but to much will slow them down.

Schools should ban these sugary drinks due to the fact that they encourage students to be abssessed with them. Sugar is a symptom of duing worse in school.

If kids are drinking sugary drinks at home while they study, they should have a sugary drink while they test. They'll do better if they have the same thing in their system each time.

    November 8, 2011 at 8:02 pm |
  26. Joey

I think that even if they do ban the sugary drinks, kids will still drink them. Since they have already been exposed to them, they will keep drinking them even if schools do ban them.

  27. Kelsey

Yes I think they should allow sugary drinks because so if your tired and you need an energizer you can use the sugar in the drinks to energize you. Thats my opion. :)

Sugary drinks on campus is a very bad thing to have. This is because America has a high child obesity rate. These sugary drinks are just adding fuel to obesity's fire. Sugary Drinks is definitely not the way to go!

    November 8, 2011 at 8:25 pm |
  29. Thomas

No, people will get fatter and fatter the more they drink the sugary drinks.

    November 8, 2011 at 8:25 pm |
  30. Drew

American's are considered the fattest people in the world. Why should we keep on encouraging drinking sugary beverages when we could actually make students healthier by serving healthier drinks? The students may have a temporary urge to drink something that tastes good, but the long-term effects are being obese and unhealthy.

    November 8, 2011 at 8:47 pm |
  31. ryan

i think that school should allow kids to have a soda or Gatorade on campus because some kids like me need an energy boost so there not asleep in class next period

    November 8, 2011 at 8:51 pm |
  32. Chance

I think that schools should not be focused on drinks nor food and worry about the academic programs more. Schools are changing everyday and students should not be focused on what they are going to drink. They should be more worried about learning!

  33. Naitian

I think that since wether or not the schools do sell vending machines don't really affect if the students consume them, why not sell some drinks and raise money for the school?

    November 8, 2011 at 8:58 pm |
  34. Claire

I think it is perfectly fair that sugary drinks are not allowed on school campus. Though students are capable of drinking them elsewhere, banning the drinks on campus gets the anti-child obesity message across and may encourage students to refrain from drinking them all together.

    Hmm...it's quite hard.
Even though Student live their lives the way they want,it sometimes matter, and sometimes doesn't for childhood obesity.
As long as students don't use the sodas or etc.,they should allow the drinks. If it gets out of hand, they'll have to temporarily ban the use of vending machines.

    November 8, 2011 at 9:18 pm |
  38. Joshua

If students in Campus want to have a sugary drink, then let them have it. its their problem if they get obese or not. But, you SHOULD have a limit on how many sugary drinks a student can get! And if you have a drink machine in your school, then why are you not going to let students use it?

I think it is wrong because doring class they will be all hiper and they will not pay attention to the teacher and talk and dont get there work done on time.

I think that they should allow the drinking of sugary drinks because the survey said that most kids will drink sugary drinks once again in the week.

  41. Faith

I think that schools should keep the ban [on sugary drinks] because some kids are hyper enough as it is, plus some aren't allowed to have sugary drinks in the first place.

    November 8, 2011 at 9:39 pm |
  42. Sahil

I think that they should allow the drinking of sugary drinks because the survey said that most kids will drink sugary drinks once again in the week. The campuses should have drinks with low sugar and low calories.

    November 8, 2011 at 9:40 pm |
  43. Matthew

It is both a good and bad idea. It may help keep the students awake ,but later on they will be hyper and disturb their classmates

    November 8, 2011 at 9:43 pm |
  44. gregory

kids should be able to drink what ever they want

    November 8, 2011 at 9:49 pm |
  45. Haley

I think that having sugary drinks at school would only cause students to be hyper and way too active. Then they would not concentrate or focus. And they will have bad grades.

i think it's the parents responsibility to tell their kids about whats good and whats not having these ending machines or not wont change the difference

    November 8, 2011 at 10:08 pm |
  47. dorian

yes because the drinks will keep the kids up all day not half of the day

If school starts ban all the sugary drinks, I'm pretty sure it would cut down the possibility of obesity rate in somehow, since all the students in school can get those drinks so easily through the vending machine.

  50. gabe

i think it is not a good idea because you never know what could happen to these students

    November 8, 2011 at 10:22 pm |
  51. Robert

I think the drinks should be banned because it can make a person hyper or sleepy and they wont be able to catch any important information, but the caffeine drinks could be used for special parties in classes, I suggest they put non-caffeine drinks but can put sport drinks also if they feel that sports drinks like Gatorade would be good for the human body.

  52. Curtis

I think that schools should not have sugary drinks on campus because in this world everyday, we are fighting obesity. A person might gain weight because of the school's sugary drinks and the school will have a bad reputation.

    November 8, 2011 at 11:07 pm |
  53. Amit

Sugary drinks are not the best choice, because the students don't need the drinks and most of us lived without it on campus.

They should ban sugsry drinks from schools bacause it fights against obesity.

    November 8, 2011 at 11:58 pm |
  56. Brin

Banning sugary drinks does not keep students from drinking them. If students want to drink sugary drinks, then they will. My school doesn't allow you to buy anything but diet drinks from our vending machines but i still have at least one sugary drink a day.

    November 9, 2011 at 12:24 am |
  57. Kathy

I think schools shouldn't allow sugary drinks because students already drink it a lot when they are out campus. If schools allow sugary drinks, the students will drink even more.

    November 9, 2011 at 12:56 am |
  58. Sara

I think they should only ban sodas. Drinks such as Powerade and Gatorade should stay. Everyone should maintain their 2000 calorie diet. Drinks like Powerade and Gatorade with a healthy snack is perfect.

    November 9, 2011 at 12:58 am |
  59. COLE

This policy still should be banned. Even though children have sugary drinks regardless of not being allowed to, it obviously will be better than allowing them to have.

    November 9, 2011 at 1:08 am |
  60. Stephen

Let them have sugary drinks, I think that the ban would do nothing, because students would still bring them in anyway if they really wanted to. If a certain penalty goes along with bringing sugary drinks, then I am for the ban.

    November 9, 2011 at 1:43 am |
  61. Eric

I think it is a good idea to ban surgry pop on campas but only for a while you should let kids get surgry pop on some days.

    November 9, 2011 at 6:16 am |
  62. Scott

I don't think so.If schools ban on sugury drinks, maybe will increase the temptation to buy more drink after school. If we want to prevent children from obesity,we should courage them to do more exercise. And that's the way to solve this problem.

    November 9, 2011 at 6:17 am |
  63. Cam

I think kids should be able to get sugary drinks during lunchtime. It's a moneymaker for the schools and since kids with no sugary drinks available to them during the school day drink the same amount as kids who do, it would make sense to have sugary drinks available to students during the school day.

    November 9, 2011 at 6:36 am |
  64. Tala

they should let people drink sugary drinks on campus unless they limit it to at least 5 drinks a week to keep track with themselves

    November 9, 2011 at 7:01 am |

I think that the bans are doing good to for the kids and keeping them from jumping of the walls.

This isn't the matter of adults that matters, it's the student's decision.

    November 9, 2011 at 7:50 am |

Schools should start allow the sales of sugary drinks. First, school should tell students that sugary drinks are harmful. Second, people sometimes do want sugary drinks, instead of drink 3 bottles of sodas after school, give them 300cc immediately instead.

    November 9, 2011 at 7:53 am |

I think school should start saling them again. The kids in school need to have something to keep them up. Kids fell asleep to much in class.

  70. John

i think that the parents of the homes should do something about it. kids always buy sugary drinks at home so why cant we buy them at schoo? i believe that schools should not offer sodas in school but they should allow fruit drinks and Powerade or Gatorade. its there choice

    November 9, 2011 at 8:22 am |

I think that all students should have the choice to choose what they would like to drink, and not what other people think they should.

I think if it does not harm the students mind they should be able to drink these sodas. Just make sure they do not get to much sugar and bound out the wall.

It should a decison for their parents if they need sugary drinks or not. Banding sugary drinks for kids who can have them would be a problem. But kids who don't really need them could affect there health. Its defintley a decision for the parents.

  78. Savannah

I personally think we should have these drinks. If we can't have sodas we should at least be able to have gatorade and powerade.Kids in school get tired of drinking milk everyday at lunch. There needs to be a better variety of drinks to choose from, so i think the surgary drinks should come back! Those are my thoughts=)

the idea is good but what if the people started to buy soda when nobody
    looking and got what wanted

    November 9, 2011 at 8:31 am |
  80. Baier

I honestly don't think it will help that much. Students can still go out and buy drinks from other places. Also, sugary drinks aren't the only cause of obesity. Other things like fatty foods and lack of exercise create obesity.

    November 9, 2011 at 8:33 am |
  81. Lanier

I personally think that there schould be a time when you get to drink sugary drinks. There is a problem if you let students jus drink and drink and drink sugary drinks all day. You wouldnt be able to calm them down.

    November 9, 2011 at 8:35 am |
  82. Lydia

I think that you shouldn't ban sugary drinks. If kids don't have the opportunity to drink them at home then they should be able to drink them at school. Although when they do drink them they need to control themselves as well.

    November 9, 2011 at 8:36 am |
  83. Kendra

We should be allowed to choose our own diets. We are mature enough to decide for ourselves what goes into our bodies. This will also make a lot of bank for the schools.

  84. Grace

I dont think that schools should have pop/sugary drinks because its all full of sugar and it can make your teeth get cavities and then you have to go to the dentist and its just to much money.

    November 9, 2011 at 8:40 am |
  85. Nathan

i do think that they should have sugary drinks on campus because if some students accidentally sleep in then they can have one of those sugary drinks so they can wake up. i also think they should have it because if they do not want the schools food then they can have a different snack instead

    November 9, 2011 at 8:45 am |
  86. Nathan

Carl what would u do if you had all of your sugary drinks taken away wouldn't u be mad i would

    November 9, 2011 at 8:46 am |
  87. Angie

Thats a tough one, but I think because kids drink so much sugary drinks out of school that they don't need them in school. If a school has a ban against it, well good for them because if kids realize that sugary drinks are not an option it might drive them to make better eating choices. Also to make them get creative with what they eat.

    November 9, 2011 at 8:51 am |

I think they should not ban it bt only let the buy it on certain days of the week and they should do this for all schools

i dont think that kids in band can drink the sugary drinks and the hard working kids in school on campus has to drink regular drinks like water i dont think thats fair to the other kids they should make it equally

I honestly think they should let students drink different kinds of beverages like soda & other like that because most students don't drink as much soda as we think they do because some just drink a soda get through the day. Especially if you tired & did not have anything for breakfast if I may say.

    November 9, 2011 at 9:04 am |

I feel if you take it away the kids are going to want the drinks even more, but i also think if you give it to them they are going to take advantage of it !

    November 9, 2011 at 9:05 am |
  98. Rahjon

First of all i think school boards should keep it just like it is because students who are suffering for childhood obesity are going to sneak & try to get the sugary sodas anyway, so if the school boards DO CHANGE IT, it really wont change anything!

    November 9, 2011 at 9:06 am |
  99. Quinton

I really don't its fair to ban everyone from sugary drinks not everyone is over weight they should just make healthier lunches.

    November 9, 2011 at 9:10 am |
  100. C.j.

I think we need to unban the sugary drinks at school because obesity children are going to drink them at home anyways. Banning it would be bad because it's more tempting to drink sugary drinks when you can't get them at school.

    November 9, 2011 at 9:10 am |
  101. Koby

I think sugary drinks should be allowed on any school campus because kids should have the right to get a drink if they want. Now they should limit the time of when the machine is opened. It should be opened during lunch time and at the end of the day.

    November 9, 2011 at 9:12 am |
  102. Madison

I think that campuses should allow sugary drinks, because if the students are just drinking them anyways what's the point in even having a ban? Students want what they want and sometimes you just have to give it to the.

    November 9, 2011 at 9:23 am |
  103. david

Dont band sugary drinks because it helps the schools prophets

    November 9, 2011 at 9:28 am |

Carl I think that sugary drinks should be allowed on campus. However they should have to pay classroom currency. The school should put some vending machines so they could get some more money.

i think it depends on if the school has sport options or not.if the school has sport options, i think the people who play sports for the school shouldn't be able to drink sugary beverages.

We should not ban these machines because the money earned from them can be used for items needed to improve education. Also, students that are more awake and alert will probably learn more. Schools can't control childhood obesity. Students will still get their drinks! We want our freedom!!!!

    November 9, 2011 at 9:36 am |
  110. Nia

I think you shouldn't because I am one of those kids but, if the children are getting obese then the parents can decide if they want there children to drink the sugary drinks from the school.

  111. camie

i think kids at school can oel have one soda ones a week and at home the parents need to keep there kids in shape or at lested get out side every onen in a walle dont just sat in front of the tv get out and walk your anmal and walk dont be a choch btada

    November 9, 2011 at 9:36 am |

I think you shoun't ban sudary drinks. If kids don't have an oppurtunity to drink them at haome they are going to drink the at home. The thing is kids havr to learn hoe to limit themselves to how many they drink and also to control themselves.

I think it is fair to let the schools have sugary drinks. Sometimes you might need a surgy drink they are very good hope we are able to have sugury drink. Bye Carl Azuz

I thank that they should let kids that are in school have sugar drinks at the schools that band it and still let the kids that are doing it alredey so that it is fare to other people and that they can just live thire life instad of fighting about it and put soda machines in the hallways at the schools that dont have one in the school so that the older kids can get some from the soda machines and put a snack machines so that the older kids can a snack from the snack machines and have someing to eat and drink so that they are not hunnger or trstey for food or drink and that is what i thank that should be in the school

i think they should keep the drinks in the school, but maybe they should have some that have less sugar in them or have a few sections for water, i guess..~

I think that they should allow the sugary drinks but have a study done on the students. The study could tell us how the sugary drinks affect the students.

    November 9, 2011 at 9:52 am |

I think that sugary drinks should be allowed because it is there own fault i f they get fat. The school should not control what they can or can not drink because it is there chose and maybe that is all they have to drink.

I think that the surgery drink ban is fair/unfair. One it can be fair because they are keeping them healthy. Two it can be unfair because they cannot control your life and what you do.Also when someone says something not to do you want to do it even more!

I think it is absolutely crazy that school officials think that if they ban something as trivial as soft drinks, students will listen and actually be discouraged to drink them outside of school. I personally love soda, and as a student myself, I can tell you firsthand that even if kids are not allowed to bring in soft drinks, they'll find a way to smuggle it in. I believe it is up to the parents to educate their kids about unhealthy snacks, and not ban it, but teach them about moderation.

    November 9, 2011 at 10:02 am |
  120. shaun

I think they shouldn't ban them because students can sometimes be hyper and get good grades at the sametime, plus you can't really get hyper unless you drink a lot of soda at the sametime.

    November 9, 2011 at 10:02 am |
  121. Natasha

I think they should allow them even though my school dosn't have soda there i still drink it and a lot more than a should really but if they have soda at school i could get a few during the day and probly would drink less at night and if they offered soda school probly kids would still buy the same thing like water, juice and sports drink anyway

    November 9, 2011 at 10:04 am |
  122. Aleta

I think that they should bring the sugary drinks back because they will bring more money to the school and banning them wont get kids healthier they'll just start uying them from stores and bringing them to school.

    November 9, 2011 at 10:04 am |
  123. Nikki

Childhood weight problems should not be targeting the schools as a first hand start. We should be focusing on home life first. No matter if you band drinks from school kids are still going to get them so how, so its not really doing much good for them.

    November 9, 2011 at 10:04 am |
  124. Alli

I think they should lift the ban on sugary drinks; students bring them from home and drink them there anyway, so what is the point of banning them when it is ineffective of stopping it? If they lifted the ban, then the school could also earn extra money when students buy them.

    November 9, 2011 at 10:04 am |
  125. Oriana

I think that schools should ban sugary drinks, but only if they replace it with something healthier in the vending machines, like V8, water and diet drinks. If obesity is such a bad thing, just put diet sodas and other non-calorie sweeteners in the vending machines.

    November 9, 2011 at 10:04 am |
  126. Ellie

I think it would help if they didn't sell them on campus, but if students want to bring and enjoy their own sugary drink, they shouldn't be stopped.

    November 9, 2011 at 10:05 am |
  127. Nicholas

I think having these drinks on campus can be dangerous because to much of this bad stuff is very unhealthy and its leading to obesity. If the students bring the soda than thats different because they can only get so much and only so many people can get to it. A little bit of soda is sometimes good for you because cafine in the morning can help you stay concentrated during the day.

    November 9, 2011 at 10:05 am |

I think that the schools with bans should let students drink sugary beverages. The school can't control what they drink.

    November 9, 2011 at 10:05 am |
  129. Amanda

I think they should allow the sugary drinks anyway, all day whenever they want to because, Either way there going to get ahold of them anyway, why not sell them on campus to profit the schools, and the students are happy and the schools happy too, I personally think It has almost nothing to do with the obesity. If they choose to drink the sodas and or sports drinks that should be all on them.

    November 9, 2011 at 10:05 am |
  130. Faith

I think that sugary drinks should be al;lowed on campus because its your own body and if you want to have soda and gatorade or other drinks you should be allowed to.

I think taking the ban away would not matter. If kids want to drink sugary drinks let them. They are taking there own chance of becoming overweight. If they don't like the results they will stop drinking sugary drinks.

    November 9, 2011 at 10:06 am |
  132. Xavier

I think they should sell sugary drinks because not everyone is obease.
Also I dont think anyone will buy "lowfat" milk anytime soon ( T_T)\(^-^ )

  133. Briana

I think that the should take sugary drinks away, because that leads to child's obesity! And if they really want sugary drinks at least 1 should be fine a week!

    November 9, 2011 at 10:06 am |
  134. eric

i think they should allow it because it does not really help with obesity because kids are always going to be able to get some one way or another

    November 9, 2011 at 10:07 am |
  135. Jazmyn

I don't think that schools should ban pop because it's the kid's choice not the school's choice and kids should be able to make their own choices.I also think that most schools don't have pop already so there not an issue in most schools.

    November 9, 2011 at 10:07 am |
  136. Marissa

Not only do sugary drinks contribute to childhood obesity, it also contributes to stunted growth, and creates easy bone fractures, especially in teenagers from 12-18. I believe that they should KEEP the ban on soda's and add to the more healthier drinks and foods.

    November 9, 2011 at 10:07 am |
  137. Emily

I believe that child obesity has nothing to do with the schools and sugary drinks. Us children/teenagers know what's bad for us and what's good for us, removing sugary drinks will not help childhood obesity, in my opinion.

    November 9, 2011 at 10:07 am |

I don't think that they need a sugary drink at school.

    November 9, 2011 at 10:07 am |

I think that the kids at the school should get a choice wether or not they get to have a sugary drink, it's the kids decision wether or not they want to take the chances getting obese.

  140. Cornelius

I do not agree on the banning of sugar filled drinks on school campuses. Students of this generation will still try drink such drinks, but a ban has no effect on it. Teachers and principals should have lectures and discussions on the effects of sugary drinks.

    November 9, 2011 at 10:08 am |
  141. Anna

I believe the campus should NOT ban sugary drinks. I believe that they should recommend children to not to drink the sugary drinks, but should not ban it. Children should be able to choose what they drink. The smart children will make the right chooses.

    November 9, 2011 at 10:08 am |
  142. Brianna

Well i think that you should not ban some because its always okay to have one or 2 like a week, i mostly drink water and sometimes i drink Nestea Diet Iced Tea. My school allows some sugary drinks, but they dont have energy drinks. I also dont think that these are whats always causing childhood obesity, Childhood Obesity is cause by Over eating and not doing any Physical Exercising.

    November 9, 2011 at 10:08 am |
  143. Ashley

I think that they should let you drink sugary drinks. I think it is your choice of what you drink. And I think no one can can tell you what not to drink. And anyway I think that wouldn't stop obesity because then when the child gets home he can drink as many soda's as he wants and nobody can stop him.

    November 9, 2011 at 10:09 am |
  144. Alexxis

The schools are not here to worry about what there students are drinking. Thats what parents are here for. Schools need to worry about what there students are learning. The students should be allowed to chose what they want to eat and drink. It's very tempting when the teachers around are drinking sodas and other sugary drinks. If students are not allowed to drink surgary drinks the teachers should not be allowed to ethier.

    November 9, 2011 at 10:09 am |
  145. Aaron

If students are drinking sugary drinks off campus, then why does it matter if they have them at school? if people are concerned that sugary drinks lead to child obesity then I think that they should ban them on and off campus.

    November 9, 2011 at 10:09 am |
  146. Courtney

Sugary drinks banned only at school does not help solve childhood obesity, there are other causes we need take of and keep the ban as well.

I think its not the schools choice what kids drink but kids should only have like two sweet drinks a day to balance there wait. : )

  148. Jada

I think they should drop the ban. After all it is their body. If they want to drink it let them. They will just get big. There are some pros and cons. A pro would be it would keep them hyped up so they should not fall asleep. A con would be they can get big and gain a lot of weight. They should just drop the ban they already buy them at stores. Schools are always complaint thet they have no money,so they should just drop the ban and just bring in the vendi machine.

    November 9, 2011 at 10:10 am |
  149. AJ

I think that everyone in middle and high school should get it if they decide to. There should also be something like a physical assessment and monitor weight loss, and sodas should be a treat.

    November 9, 2011 at 10:11 am |
  150. Kaitlyn

I think schools with bans should drop them.Students are going to drink sugary drinks, and there really isn't a point to banning them from schools if outside school people drink them anyway.

  151. Melani

    Dear CCN student news,

I think that the students should have a choice wether they want to drink sugary or not.I also think that teachers should put the example of not drinking sugary drinks in class so students would do the same.

    November 9, 2011 at 10:11 am |
  152. michael

Will i think that we should have Sugary Drinks on Campus.I mean it what they want to drink. It should be the kids choice weather they want to drink it.and if they want to drink it they should be able to drink it.Or they can do a petition about it.

    November 9, 2011 at 10:11 am |

    November 9, 2011 at 10:11 am |
  154. Brent

I think kids should be allowed to have sugar drinks. Kids already drink them in school so why not let them. If they drink them at home why not drink them at school. I think kids should have what they want.

    November 9, 2011 at 10:12 am |
  155. Joshua

I think that bans on sugary drinks do h elp discourage child hood obesity, sometimes. Even though, there are bans on sugary drinks at school, that doesn't mean that kids won't get the sugary drinks from someone, or somewhere, else. Some children may only have on sugary drink a week, and it might help with the ban put on, but, even with the ban put on, other children probably drink sugary drinks all the time. So even with some of the best efforts not all kids, if any, can be helped by bans on sugary drinks at school.

    November 9, 2011 at 10:12 am |
  156. Jen

I think that they should have one of those soda machines like they have in a restaurant. They should because if it ran out of soda that would be it and it should be fe-filled every week so it would limit the amount of soda we drink.

    November 9, 2011 at 10:12 am |
  157. Elizabeth

I think that the schools that have bans say no sugary drinks should keep the ban in place. Even though students can still get the drinks, its just a little harder.

    November 9, 2011 at 10:12 am |
  158. T.

Schools that have banned sugary drinks should allow them because students are going to buy them anyway and therefore, the school should at least gain some financial benefit from the purchases of these drinks.

    November 9, 2011 at 1:04 pm |
  159. Sergio

If students are drinking them anyway, I don't think a ban would be needed. It can be stopped however by enforcing punishment. Overall, I think there shouldn't be a ban, as students at this age should have responsibility and know what they are putting into their bodies.

I made a poem for this subject:

If you are obese at home it shall not stop
At home there is no teacher to act as a cop
What you drink isn't a major factor
What is is what you do after
Exercise daily, that's what you need
What you drink at school doesn't matter to ye
    What you eat matters most
Like don't over-do it on the Butter
    ON CINNAMON TOAST

Hope you like it. It brings across my point that I believe we should have sports drinks but I do believe that soda is a poor choice. Go play with your cat or dog to stay thin too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    November 9, 2011 at 7:05 pm |

I think that they should have it once in a while not too often but get rewarded for their hard work.

    November 11, 2011 at 2:48 pm |
  162. Stacey

I don't think schools should drop their bans because obesity is a big problem in America. Kids are eating more and more junk food everyday, effecting their health. My school has a wellness policy, so we don't have foods that are TOO FATTENING OR SUGARY. But it schools start dropping their bans, the risk of obesity will be even higher. If students want to drink juice, maybe the can consider sugar-free juice, or they can provide the students lowfat milk like my school does. If students don't go to a boarding school and don't stay overnight, they can have their treats at home so they have a little bit of both. Or if a student has a really good improvement in something sugary drinks can be additional prizes. But it kids start drinking sugary drinks there is going to be big consequences.

    November 11, 2011 at 3:25 pm |
  163. Tracey

Schools with bans should let kids drink unhealthy drinks. There is no point in banning those drinks if kids are going to drink them once they get home. They're not going to stay in school for the rest of their lives. Kids also need to learn that everything comes with a consequence. If they are going to drink those drinks, let them, because they will regret their decision in the future. Kids need to learn how to have will power.

    November 11, 2011 at 3:37 pm |
  164. Maddie

Sugary drinks should be banned on school campuses because kids love sodas and sports drinks and they don't know when to stop themselves from drinking them. Also, the students would not be able to focus in class because they took in so much sugar.

    November 11, 2011 at 3:38 pm |
  165. Ariana

I think that kids should not be allowed to drink "sugary" drinks on campus because it might get them hyped up and then they won't be able to do their work. I also think that they should ban the sugary drinks or at least put a limit on them. Like give the students a card to put in the machine so they can only get around 1 or 2 drinks a day.

    November 11, 2011 at 3:51 pm |
  166. Aryelle

I feel as a middle school student that we should stop child obesity instead of gaining it. Some sugary drinks are okay if you only have them once in a while, but not everyday...we need to start fighting against child obesity and not stop....

    November 11, 2011 at 4:50 pm |
  167. Zigon

I think banning sugary drinks on campuses only increases the want to drink them outside of school. Schools with bans should keep them because the kids are already drinking more of them outside, but schools without bans should stay that way.

    November 11, 2011 at 5:44 pm |
  168. Andrea

Just because it might be banned at school, isn't going to stop people from drinking sugary drinks at home and in restaurants. Middle schoolers especially love the novelty of certain sugary drinks like Sobe, Gatorade, and don't forget Monster Energy drinks. I think education about these types of drinks is important so people can make smart decisions about what to drink.

    November 11, 2011 at 6:24 pm |
  169. jake

even though kids can still drink sugary drinks off campus it souldnt be allowed because students could be too hyper and they could also get answers wrong on tests, homework, or school projects

    November 11, 2011 at 6:52 pm |
  170. Dautiana

I think that they should let people choose what they want to drink ,because they should be old enough to know how to take care of their self.

    November 11, 2011 at 7:05 pm |
  171. Cathrine

I think it's a problem with a solution to be solved. One is even though it is banned they should allow it one day a week. That way everyone is happy. But, sugary drinks DO cause obesity and it's okay once and a while not all of the time. Energy drinks shouldn't be needed if you get the amount of sleep that you need.

    November 11, 2011 at 7:16 pm |
  172. katie

if the drinks help the students with learning then the drinks should stay but if the drinks have like 300 or more calories then the principals should take the drinks away

    November 11, 2011 at 7:53 pm |
  173. katie

Let it be allowed! it helps students!!!!!!!!

    November 11, 2011 at 7:56 pm |

    November 11, 2011 at 7:58 pm |

I do think they sholud do that because we already have enough sugary drinks off campus that is the reason alot of people are obesse in the U.S.A.

    November 11, 2011 at 8:31 pm |
  176. veronica

yes and no.Yes because kids should always have something to drink that has sugar and we don't always want to be thirsty. No because we also don't want to encourage child obesity.

    November 11, 2011 at 8:49 pm |
  177. Tana

This issue goes beyond childhood obesity. Schools are the one place you would hope kids could go and be well fed in both mind and body. It is not simply the issue of sugar, but also about the amount of caffeine some of these products contain. Instead of having sodas that are heavy laden in sugar and caffeine why not have a machine that offers water, juices (100% juice), carbonated flavored waters, and sugar free/caffeine free products.

    November 11, 2011 at 9:14 pm |
  178. Dallas

why shouldn't we be aloud to have sodas and other sugary drinks. obesity should not be blamed on the soda and other drink companies. it's not there fault that some children and teens just don't know when enough is enough

    November 11, 2011 at 9:21 pm |
  179. Joy

I mean, like, we should have a free choice of what we do. It's a free country, and the schools cant make us not drink something as little as Sprite! The people of the world(in this case, school) are mature and should be able to handle what they eat and drink.

    November 11, 2011 at 9:33 pm |
  180. holly

no it does not help because if they drink it at home or bring it to school
the ban is not going to stop them from drinking sugary drinks so whats the point?

    November 11, 2011 at 9:45 pm |
  181. Jimmy

Kids should be able to drink what they want. Surely they shouldn't drink soda all day. Maybe have a soda week where you drink soda and then back to healthy foods.

    November 11, 2011 at 10:00 pm |
  182. Melissa

I think that students should be able to chose their drinks not the school because we are supposed to be a free country.

    November 11, 2011 at 10:07 pm |
  183. Alley

A lot of kids bring the drinks to school anyway, so these bans aren't really helping. As long as they are put in middle and high schools, i think people are old enough to make the right decisions about what they put into their body. If people really cared all that much about what kids drink, they would stop serving greasy pizza and high calorie chicken.

    November 11, 2011 at 10:17 pm |
  184. Tyler

Yes, beacuse all that sugar will make us hyper and not focus and concentrate on the work the teacher is trying to tell us. We should only have a sugary drink once a week.

    November 11, 2011 at 10:27 pm |
  185. melanie

I think we should because sugary drinks are not healthy they should put water machine instead that way it will be healthy and not diabetic

    November 11, 2011 at 10:57 pm |
  186. Briana

I think we should be able to because it's not gonna keep us from learning because I see people falling asleep all the time and if we are able to drink sugared drinks we could stay awake longer and listen better! It's also better for preventing people from being thirsty so they won't have to miss class.

    November 11, 2011 at 11:40 pm |
  187. Raphy

I think reverse psychology would be a good method to stop kids from drinking soft drinks because if you are not aloud to have sugary drinks at school people are going to think it is cool to have them, but if you are aloud to have sugary drinks not many people are going to want to have them because people won't consider it cool.

    November 12, 2011 at 12:46 am |
  188. jonathon

i think they do it to try to git students to stay on a helthy diet they best way they know how

    November 12, 2011 at 5:46 am |
  189. Henry

I think they should unban the sugary drinks because there maybe people in those campuses don't really drink sugary drinks and sometimes need a reward if they do good in a test, have good grades, etc.

    November 12, 2011 at 10:15 am |
  190. Jessica

Since students are drinking them any way, I don't see why they would ban them.

    November 12, 2011 at 10:49 am |
  191. Noelle

I say ban soda basically all it is is sugar and soda has been ban from lots of schools so why let back in? but they should keep drinks like gatorade, powerade and green tea but only aloud to be boughting before and after school.

    November 12, 2011 at 1:11 pm |
  192. bryce

I thimk students should be allowed to drink sugary drinks they just can't go overboard with it. The people who work at a school should let the kids have one sugary drink every week or month. My school let's us get gatorade, but we have to pay extra for it. I think it should be allowed at any other school. it's the child's decison, he or she can pay extra for sugary drinks. They can blow off their money however they want to. At least it's going to the school.

    November 12, 2011 at 2:24 pm |
  193. hailey

i think that sugary drinks should not be allowed because some kids like me are diabetics will get pick on because of they cant have alot of sugary foods or drinks now that will lead back up to bulling which we just a anti-bullied month now if you are a kid that has suger problems like me than would you want to be builled

    November 12, 2011 at 3:01 pm |
  194. Kamryn

Schools should allow students to have sugary drinks, after all it's possible they're up all night doing homework. The sugary drink can wake them up in time for class.

    November 12, 2011 at 3:32 pm |
  195. Tobin

I agree that if kids are drinking the drinks anyway, the school should maybe limit the amounts. True the drinks are bad for you, but ban, give a choice. maybe a make and send a survey to the kid and/or parents.

    November 12, 2011 at 3:41 pm |
  196. Emily

I think students should get pop machines in school so they could get a treat at school. Maybe just for lunch not just for all classes. But if it gets out of hand, It should be banned.

    November 12, 2011 at 3:46 pm |
  197. Darby

I think that they should be more strict with the drinks even though kids drink them anyway. The parents also play a huge roll in this problem. The parents need to make sure that they are paying attention to how much sugar their kids are taking in.

    November 12, 2011 at 3:48 pm |
  198. Paige

I think kids should be aloud one sugary drink a day and that it should NOT be aloud on campus. Kids get hyper and can't stay focused. This means less education and a worse future for America. We are already in a tight spot with our econemy. This would just make matters worse

    November 12, 2011 at 4:14 pm |
  199. briana

i think schools should not ban drinks but students should be only able to buy like one or two pops each week. I think that if they ban pop fom school some students wouldnt want to buy anything else for a drink because they are so use to drinking it.

    November 12, 2011 at 4:58 pm |

No there is no point to a ban to be put in place. If students are still going to bring them into school. At this age you should be thinking about what you consume.

I don't think schools should reinstate selling sugary drinks because even though kids still drink them elsewhere schools are making them less accessible for the 8 hours a day kids are @ school. This way schools are not held responsible for the consequences of sugary drinks.

    November 12, 2011 at 6:27 pm |
  202. Luisa

Sugary Drinks are a cause of childhood obesity, allowing students to drink them on a school campus would encourage students to have sugary drinks every day or more then recommended. Growing up, developing, and learning while having sugary drinks could lead to many students carrying on with their unhealthy diets for the rest of their lives. Instead of banning sugary drinks completely from schools I think schools should refrain from selling them to students and instead educate them about how to take care of their body's and eating right!

  203. Garrett

The study is incomplete. Asking only if they've had a sugary drink doesn't imply that it actually was consumed at school. Additionally, based on the presentation of the results, there was no distinction made between the consumption of 10 drinks and 1 drink. A complete study would need to be done before have adequent information for an informed decision.

I think that schools should give sugary drinks because it
stimulates the brain, and when the brain gets stimulated the students learn better. So schools should not ban sugary drinks.

    November 12, 2011 at 7:34 pm |
  205. Alisha

I think the ban should stay, because even if they drink sugary drinks off campus they would drink it less. If the ban was lifted then kids would drink sugary drinks on campus and off campus.

    November 12, 2011 at 8:32 pm |
  206. Lindsay

I believes students should be able to make their own decisions about what is healthy and what is not. Making decisions is a part of growing up and being an adult, so the machines should stay.

    November 12, 2011 at 8:35 pm |
  207. Anuj

I dont think the school should ban it. The kids can bring whatever they want and that will also help alot of kids become responsible. The school doesnt have to sell it but kids can bring it. And I think that most people think that sugary drinks are soda and sports drink but it could also be juice. The school can atleast sell juice or snapple. The school could also get a good profit.

    November 12, 2011 at 8:39 pm |
  208. Monica

I don't think banning drinks is needed.Students just have a little ammount of time to get drinks if they wanted one.Students don't need sugary drinks.Instead of sugary drinks how about healthy drinks?

    November 12, 2011 at 9:41 pm |
  209. Tom

The school board should allow drinks on campus,{ the ban} , because they are only taking away the soda but what about the other junk food. If you ban it or not somehow the kids will get soda and other junk food

    November 12, 2011 at 9:57 pm |
  210. Jordan

I think a ban would not be needed because kids that are this age should know what they are puting in their body. And some kids are only allowed to drink certaint drinks anyway so they can use this as an advantage.

    November 12, 2011 at 10:17 pm |
  211. Dori

I think the schools should keep the ban, because then the kids have to put in a little more effort to actually get those drinks.

    November 13, 2011 at 1:03 am |
  212. Audrey

I think Sugary drinks at school should be band. Some people thing having sugar and caffeine in their system makes them think better. But, it really doesn't! It just makes you hyper for less than an hour and then it's packed into your blood flow. It really doesn't help, it just decreases your focus. And, the lack of focus is not needed in school, where we need focus the most. So I think sugary things should be band from school cafeteria's.

    November 13, 2011 at 2:42 am |
  213. Audrey

I think the ammount of sugary drinks should be allowed, but limited. Child obesity is a major problem, and shouldn't be encouraged at school. The only way to stop Child obesity, is to take away part of the source!

    November 13, 2011 at 2:44 am |

I think that if schools ban sugary drinks the amount of money they make a week will drop badly that is there big money maker.

    November 13, 2011 at 6:38 am |
  215. Trey

I think that they should still not allow sugary drinks to be sold on campus. Even though it's not making much of a difference it's still a change for the good.

    November 13, 2011 at 8:45 am |
  216. A.J.

It doesn't matter if they do or don't because Students will just bring them from home. My school allows the sale of some a fruit juice called "VeryFine" I really didn't check the label, but by drinking it, you can tell it's sugary, So it really don't matter if they do or don't.

    November 13, 2011 at 10:00 am |
  217. Isaac

I think they should be able to drink what they want. but if it distracts them from there work they should realize it is a personal problem and they should stop drinking surgery drinks.

    November 13, 2011 at 10:10 am |
  218. Natalie

I think sugary drinks should be banned on campus because in these years of a students lives they are choosing career paths and need to stay focused. If they consume the drink they will become a little less serious and could make a mistake or get in trouble.

    November 13, 2011 at 10:28 am |
  219. Amber, Peyton

We think that the school boards should not allow sugary foods or drinks on campus while school is in session, because caffeine or sugar makes the brain react differently But we have to admit as we are true lovers of sugary items that this event will effect how kids/teens react to everyday school life's
    Yours truly,
    Amber and Peyton

  220. Kara

I think that schools with the ban should keep them, because school is about 61/2 hours every week day, and that is 61/2 hours that kids are not drinking soda or other drinks with a lot of sugar in them. Schools without bans should get them, because obesity is a major problem in America

    November 13, 2011 at 12:28 pm |
  221. Myranda

It should be fine for students to drink sugary drinks, if they did ban them.. it'd be like banning "ice-cream" or "Cookies" because they are unhealthy.

    November 13, 2011 at 6:04 pm |
  222. Savannah

In my opinion, trying to ban sugary drinks on campuses isn’t going to stop kids from consuming them. So if students are going to continue to drink pop, Gatorade, and other sugary substances; allow the sales of them on campuses, but only during certain hours in the day. Shut them off for thirty minutes before and after lunch. The only way schools are going to decrease the sales of sugary drinks and fight childhood obesity on campuses depends on the parents of the children, and how much sugar they let their children consume. A child’s sugar consumption is the child’s parent’s decision.

    November 13, 2011 at 6:49 pm |
  223. Emma

I think that if you have to much sugar it won't help you come down and concentrate. I only drink water and I still survive. Powerade ( the drink) is basically sugar and water. You helping the companies because they get money no matter if there band at school or not. But it is not helping you stay healthy. Even if they say there healthy. You could make healthier drinks at home and save money. I think people should put signs up showing the rate and it is not very healthy.

    November 13, 2011 at 7:10 pm |
  224. Cat

I think that they should keep the no sugary drinks rule because kids and teens act hyper enough already as it is! Why give them some thing that would just boost their energy level even more? If they want to drink off campus let them, but it would only make it worse to give them more.

    November 13, 2011 at 7:31 pm |
  225. Devereaux

I think schools should allow sugary drinks, ONLY ON A LIMIT. They should limit the amount of sugary drinks for the students, to 2 drinks a day, at the most...

    November 13, 2011 at 7:33 pm |
  226. Chelsea

Kids could still bring their own drinks onto campus. Although yes it is good that they are banning it, kids will most likely bring their own and store it in their locker. How many people are going to check and make sure they don't bring any.

    November 13, 2011 at 9:02 pm |
  227. Kaitlyn

    Dear carl,
I think sugary drinks should be allowed on the campus because if the students get drinks from other places than what is the point in having the ban. They should let kids drink what they want but have there a limit.
    Sincerly,
    Kaitlyn

    November 13, 2011 at 9:52 pm |
  228. Becca

Whether you like it or not, we are going to drink sugary drinks (like Gatorade). If we don't buy them at school we will buy them elsewhere. So all the school is doing is throwing a fit over something they can't stop. Plus, by trying they lose the income of the money coming from selling those drinks. By the way, if your school won't sell sugary drinks, then the sports programs should not be endorsed by them.

    November 13, 2011 at 10:09 pm |
  229. Jean-Paul

They should be allowed. The thing is though, if they withdraw the ban, they should not sell them on campus. The students should have their own discretion about them and their parents should also help decide weather they can bring them to school.

    November 13, 2011 at 10:26 pm |
  230. Ethan

I think the sugary drinks should be aloud. How are you fighting childhood obesity if the students there are not children. They are old enough to decide for themselves what to drink.

    November 14, 2011 at 6:59 am |
  231. Derek

I don't think it's really a big deal if someone wants to buy a soda they should be allowed to do that.

    November 14, 2011 at 7:34 am |
  232. Emily

I don't think it makes a difference, because if there drinking them off campus, then how is it changing childhood obesity?

    November 14, 2011 at 7:43 am |
  233. paul

i think that sugary drinks should not be allowed on school property because students can always bring them to school then they will get addicted to the sugary drinks so thats is why they should ban them all the time

    November 14, 2011 at 9:01 am |
  234. Dustin

There should not be a ban on sugary drinks in school. Where I go to school over half of the kids stop at the store on the way and bring them to the school anyways. The only thing the ban is doing is preventing kids from buying the drinks on campus. They will still continue to drink them away from school.

    November 14, 2011 at 9:17 am |
  235. Darian

I think they should not have shugary drinks because a lot of childeren would get cavities and would problobly get mad and sew the school and thats just my appinon and also some ways that is a good thing because gatorade is good for you. p.s cal you rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    November 14, 2011 at 9:18 am |
  236. Hannah

I don't think there should be a ban on sugary drinks in schools. Students will consume sugary drinks whether they are discouraged in schools or not. If schools do not sell sugary drinks to their students, there is a possibility that students will buy them other places and bring them into the school anyways. I don't believe that banning these drinks in the school environment will affect what students consume at home.

    November 14, 2011 at 9:22 am |
  237. Jusin

It should be the sudent's choice on whether or not they want to drink sugary drinks. Sugary drinks are NOT the reason that kids are obese. If they want a sugary drink they can eat it at home. Some kids have low blood sugar and might need sugary drinks. If schools take away sugary drinks they will take students freedom(read the constitution).

    November 14, 2011 at 9:23 am |
  238. DYLAN

i dont think there should be a ban on sugary drinks. If Kids cant buy them in school they are most likely going to but them at the store and bring them to school, so why ban it? :)

    November 14, 2011 at 9:24 am |
  239. daniel

i dont think sugary drinks should be banned because alot of kids like a refreshing drink at school while doing all there work all day. even though it may be sugary its not like we cant think while were drinking them or its against the law.

    November 14, 2011 at 9:31 am |

I think they should just allow the drink's becauase no one is tellinfg them they can't bring thier own drinks .

    November 14, 2011 at 10:20 am |
  242. Alan

Banning sugary drinks should be kept. It may not prevent from buying it outside of school but it will limit their consumption.

    November 14, 2011 at 10:24 am |
  243. Sarah

I think they should not be allowed on campus, regardless of what students do outside of school. Not selling them on campus helps prevent the consumption of unhealthy, sugary drinks.

    November 14, 2011 at 10:25 am |
  244. Alex

Having sugary drinks on campus is a privilege that the students choose to abuse. most student have a choice to choose between healthy drinks instead of ones filled with sugar.

    November 14, 2011 at 10:28 am |
  245. Kaimana

school should not ban those types of drinks. Many of those drinks help students get the energy that they need to stay awake or even focus on the work they are assigned to do. So if you ask me keep them in schools and let the STUDENTS have as much as they want.

    November 14, 2011 at 10:29 am |
  246. shannon

yes i think sugar drinks should be allowed because it makes no sense of how banning sugary drinks at school makes a difference we can go home and drink our sugary drink it makes no difference at all.

    November 14, 2011 at 10:29 am |
  247. chelsee

I think it should be our choice because students will drink it out of school if it is continued to be banned.

    November 14, 2011 at 10:29 am |
  248. Frank

If it is banned from school the kids will still do it. its not like it is banned from their household. If a kid really wanted a sugary drink how hard would it be to fill up a tin water bottle with what ever drink they want? i mean kids sneak alcohol, drugs, ect. what makes you think they wont sneak a sugary drink. It should be allowed because kids will do it anyway.

    November 14, 2011 at 10:30 am |
  249. nahom

whether not schools ban them kids are still gonna go home and eat whatever they want usually pertaining to junk food so it really doesnt make a difference

    November 14, 2011 at 10:30 am |
  250. Brennan

You can take away sugery drinks and vending machines, but it won't stop people from bringing their own.

    November 14, 2011 at 10:31 am |
  251. Danny

Well the way i see it is that students drink sugary beverages everyday regardless if your in school or out of school, schools that have banned the sell of sugary beverages should allow the sell of those items because the money the school district would gain from a students addiction to sugar.

    November 14, 2011 at 10:31 am |
  252. Kalisia

It can cause obesity but at the same time some kids dont eat in the morning. And sometimes dont have enough time to eat in the morning also and they might need something to start their day. And at that it may need to be sweet. Personaly i dont eat breakfast in the morning which calls for me to have something sweet to eat or drink.

    November 14, 2011 at 10:32 am |
  253. KYLEY

SUGERY DRINKS SHOULD DEFINATELY BE ALLOWED AT SCHOOL. LET KIDS DRINK WHAT THEY WANNA DRINK, AS LONG AS THEY BRING A NOTE FROM A PARENT!!!!!!!!!!!

    November 14, 2011 at 10:33 am |
  254. rachel

i think that schools should NOT HAVE SUGARY DRINKS ON CAMPUS! IF THE KIDS SEE THAT SCHOOLS HAVE IT IN SCHOOL THEY WILL THINK THAT IT'S OKAY TO DRINK IT, AND IT'S not OKAY! SUGARY DRINKS MAKE PEOPLE OBEASE. THEREFORE WE NEED TO HAVE no sugary drinks on school campus!!!

    November 14, 2011 at 10:33 am |
  255. Aide

I think that it is a persons choice if they want to drink a sugary drink or health drinks. Even though most kids would rather drink an unhealthy drink they will get tired of it at a certain point.

    November 14, 2011 at 10:33 am |
  256. zane

i think as long as students are responsible and not going to make a mess with them or put other things in them such as alcohol or other things. The sugar in sugury drinks makes students hyper and not pays attention well. With kids being hyper it could make it so other students arnt paying attention or concentrate. Some students are drinking to much pop. Due to drinking to much pop, some kids are getting fatter and not getting the exercise they need. . I think they should maybe band pop on campus to certain students maybe so they arn’t drinking it all day.

    November 14, 2011 at 10:35 am |
  257. Yolanda

I believe sugary drinks should not be allowed at school. It will give students the chance to realize that low sugar drinks are just as good.

    November 14, 2011 at 10:37 am |
  258. Gerardo

I believe that schools need to gain some business savvy. The belief that not selling sugary drinks on school will prevent kids from drinking them is absurd. Off campus, kids will drink whatever they please. The smart thing to do would be to sell the drinks to kids along with other popular food choices whether they're healthy or not. Run the school more like a business and maybe then we'd have more money for the students. America was built on freedom of choice and if kids can't make the simple choice of choosing a sugary drink or a healthy snack then what are we teaching them.

    November 14, 2011 at 10:42 am |
  259. akin2

sugary drinks it can give you a boost at school but school dont recommend it because of the sugar rush of it then you'll crush :)

    November 14, 2011 at 10:42 am |
  260. akin1

i thinks school that have them banned should keep them banned and schools that do have them should ban them because it helps keep it away for about 7hrs to help prevent child obesity which a huge problem that America faces. Yea boii

    November 14, 2011 at 10:43 am |
  261. Brent

i think we should have pop machines because kids (like me) sneak them in to schools anyway's so WHATEVAAAA ! Lol

    November 14, 2011 at 10:44 am |
  262. Jorge

Obesity is a major problem in America and although this policy might slightly contribute to this growing problem i do not believe this policy should be in place for two reasons, I highly doubt it will have any major or lasting effects and the denial of sugared drinks to students might be accompanied with severe problems such as dehydration. A fat student is better than a thirsty student.

    November 14, 2011 at 10:46 am |
  263. spencer

they should let them have sugary drinks on only one day of the school week and then if they break the rules then its on their hands not anyone else

    November 14, 2011 at 10:47 am |
  264. Luis

..."students should have the choice to buy suger drinks or heathly drinks. All schools just want to make more money for there school because of the economy"..

  265. kyle

i doubt any law can keep kids from getting sugary drinks on campus. shouldn't we devote more of the schools energy towards the schooling young adults? as i seriously think our eduction system is failing

    November 14, 2011 at 11:14 am |
  266. Emma

I think the schools/governemnt should stay out of our health lives, it is our choice what we say and do and even practice.. so why cant we choose what to eat or drink ourselves? We have to learn to make dicisions about health and other problems, starting us out with a choice is the way to go.

    November 14, 2011 at 11:32 am |
  267. Kassedy

I think that schools should allow students to drink sugery drinks, even if it may be an outcome of childhood obesity. Banning it will make kids want to drink it more anyways.

    November 14, 2011 at 11:37 am |
  268. DeAnna

Sugary drinks have positive and negative affects on school campuses. On the positive side, students would have a product within reach that would help them stay awake during class if they didnt get enough sleep. On the negative side, it could cause obesity in the students that choose to purchase the sugary products. At the end of the day you just have to pick your poison, or in this case, sugar.

    November 14, 2011 at 12:23 pm |
  269. tyler

Schools that already have them banned should keep it banned, and schools who allow them should decide to ban them or keep allowing the drinks. Obesity is a problem in America so i guess the right thing to do is ban them to help them drink healthy drinks while they do spend time at school.

    November 14, 2011 at 12:24 pm |
  270. Sherry

I think that the sugary drink ban should be removed on school campuses because, like it is stated above, students will drink them anyway whether or not they buy it at school. Banning sugary drinks in school won't stop childhood obesity, and sugary drinks aren't the only things that are causing childhood obesity. If you ban the drinks at school you might as well ban all the other sugary items that schools sell. I agree that childhood obesity is a problem and some sugary items should be banned, but cutting it off at school won't do as much as cutting it off at the source.

    November 14, 2011 at 12:25 pm |
  271. Tiffany

i feel its irrelevant because everyones body is different, so their bodies are going to respond to the sugar differently. Everyone should not have to suffer because of how other people bodies respond to the same "sugary drinks"!!

    November 14, 2011 at 12:26 pm |
  272. Danny

my school has sugary drinks i think that its up to the students to choose to drink it or not. in high school you are almost an adult and you should be responsible to my your own choices.

    November 14, 2011 at 12:26 pm |
  273. london

well its up to the students if they want to drink it or not because you can choose to make yourself obese its not any ones fault but yours and other people shouldn't have to suffer because other peoples bodies respond differently to sugar

    November 14, 2011 at 12:26 pm |
  274. Jesus

Banning the sugary drinks in schools should be a policy for every school in america, reason being is that it does help the obesity rate go down. Coke shouldn't be a choice for kids to buy in school, if schools can help in decreasing the rate of obesity than of course ban high sugar drinks especially when kids spend 7-9 hours in school.

    November 14, 2011 at 12:27 pm |
  275. Sevriana

I feel that schools should have sugary drinks on campus. It is not the schools job to control the obesity rate, its not like kids are gonna go home and eat healthy because the school serves healthy food.

    November 14, 2011 at 12:27 pm |
  276. Ernesto

I think that student can do whatever they want because if they want to drink soda or whatever other thing the can do it but they gonna know that they gonna get fat. If the need help they know how find it.

    November 14, 2011 at 12:27 pm |
  277. Reymundo

Schools should not ban "sugary" drinks. Schools should just focus on the students education not their looks. It is the parents responsibility to assure that their kids have healthy lifestyles.

    November 14, 2011 at 12:28 pm |
  278. Hugo

Sugary drinks should be allow on campus, because we are helping the school to get more money. It should be our choice to buy it or not. We are happy for buying the drink and the school is happy by getting money from us. It is a win win situation.

    November 14, 2011 at 12:28 pm |
  279. Taylor

Even though students may drink them at school, sugary drinks should stay banned because of accessibility. A lot of people who would otherwise drink soda or other unhealthy drinks if they were available to them do not because they can't access them during the school day. I know this from experience. Also, many young students do not realize the kind of negative consequences drinking these drinks can have; i.e. diabetes or obesity.

    November 14, 2011 at 12:29 pm |
  280. Dylan

i beleive they should start lifting the ban, because students are going to drink them anyway right? And whats stoping them from just bringing them to school? A student can make the choice to drink or not to drink a soda or other sugary at school.

P.S. Great puns Carl keep it up!

    November 14, 2011 at 12:30 pm |
  281. Amy

It doesn't matter if they ban sugary drinks from school or not because the students will bring them from home anyways. Yes child obesity is a big problem but that's up to the parents to let the children know how sugary drinks can affect them if they keep drinking them.

    November 14, 2011 at 12:30 pm |
  282. Jose

I think that they should let people choose what they want to drink.

    November 14, 2011 at 12:31 pm |
  283. Illene

I think sugary drinks should be allowed, students should be able to have choices. Sugary drinks may not be all healthy but it keeps students awake.

    November 14, 2011 at 12:32 pm |
  284. RYNE

The ban doesn't matter because kids drink that stuff right after school at the fast food places near our school so it defeats the purpose

    November 14, 2011 at 12:33 pm |
  285. Teodor

In my opinion the school putting a ban on the sugary drinks at school will to a point prevent obesity, but like the article said students are still drinking those drinks outside school non stop. I suggest that they should be allowed on campus instead of being banned as the campuses should make an after school program in order to help those children who have overweight problems.

    November 14, 2011 at 12:33 pm |
  286. Zabiba

I think that the school should focus on students education and not what they're drinking because kids come to school to get an education not to be told what to drink.

    November 14, 2011 at 12:34 pm |
  287. Tony

It doesn't matter if schools banned sugary drink on campus because most students would bring it in anyways

    November 14, 2011 at 12:35 pm |
  288. Josh

What's up Carl! Keep those puns up to standards man.

Anyways i think that schools should have sugary drinks. It is the kids problem if they can not not regulate themselves on how much to drink then that is there own fault. So that is the way i see it Carl. Thank you Carl for your time.

If you ban sugary drinks then kids wouldn't be able to choose between healthy or sugary which means that some kids wouldn't take responsibility for what they eat so they would feel compelled to pick sugary things.

    November 14, 2011 at 12:49 pm |
  290. Kelsey

Yes I think they should allow sugary drinks because so if your tired and you need an energizer you can use the sugar in the drinks to energize you. Thats my opion.

    November 14, 2011 at 12:55 pm |
  291. Dani

I think that banning sugary drinks will only help obesity to an extent. The fact remains that kids will still drink them. I do not support the ban.

    November 14, 2011 at 1:22 pm |
  292. Francisco

i think should just let kids drink whatever they want because they will go ahead and bring them to school or drink them after to school anyways so it shouldn't matter

    November 14, 2011 at 1:23 pm |
  293. kiona

schools should keep sugary drinks , especially because we are up early in the morning and with the drinks with the sugar we can get some enegry in our bodies. schools with bans can't help with obesity that is the children choice.

    November 14, 2011 at 1:23 pm |
  294. amber

sugar drink should be allowed at school because it will give you energy to learn better and not fall asleep and you cant blame the school for the bad effects because the students willingly bought the drink

    November 14, 2011 at 1:23 pm |
  295. Cris

Most sugary drinks should be allowed on campus no matter what kind it is. There are some drinks, like Monster, that should be banned. But others like soda or juice, should stay on. Its pretty stupid to ban those kinds of drinks. However, the only time when they should not be allowed is DURING CLASS. Other then that, why not have them at lunch, in the morning, or at the end of the day of course. Beside all that, I see teachers with them all the time so....DURING class.....

    November 14, 2011 at 1:24 pm |
  296. Sydney

I believe that sugary drinks should be permitted because one of the benefits is that it "wakes" the brain of students and increase their learning ability.

    November 14, 2011 at 1:24 pm |
  297. Yohannes

I think they should ban sugary drinks on campus, because it helps kids stay away from sugary stuff.

    November 14, 2011 at 1:25 pm |
  298. Ingrid

I don't think the school should ban the selling of sugary drink because it doesn't have significance effect in solving the children obesity problem. Students generally only stay at school for 6 hours and after school, they still have lots of opportunities to access to sugary drink. Moreover, sugary drink can help students to boost their energy lever. For example, when students feel dizzy when they didn't have breakfast, they can have sugary drink during emergency to boost the glucose level in their body.

    November 14, 2011 at 1:25 pm |
  299. Trevor

Only reason they dont allow it is because you may spill that drink in class which may lead to a number of problems. This starting with Bugs being attracted to the sugar that now lays within the carpet. Also you will have to have the janitor come in and clean the room. This can be a hassle if he has to go to every room every day to clean. I know thats a exaggerating but i mean it would be way easier to just ban sugar drinks from school.

    November 14, 2011 at 1:25 pm |
  300. Beza

i don't think sugary drinks should be banned. every one should drink whatever he\she wants to drink.

    November 14, 2011 at 1:25 pm |
  301. Josh

If teachers are drinking sodas in class, i think its fair for the students to drink sodas too.

    November 14, 2011 at 1:27 pm |
  302. Jeshley

I think that school should sell sugary drinks so the school can make some money. In Las Vegas NV, school are taken out class that can help the students choose what type of future field they want to take.

    November 14, 2011 at 1:27 pm |
  303. Erick

Well Carl, I think its up to the students because either way kids who ditch still go to the Jack in the Box across the street and get them. We are old enough to know what is good for us or not.

    November 14, 2011 at 1:27 pm |
  304. Francisco

Maybe they should allow kids to have sugary drinks if the kids can handle the sugar and be responsible about the drinks

    November 14, 2011 at 1:28 pm |
  305. Matt

Shouldnt what we drink be our decision? Isn't the wellness of our health our problem? We all already have enough people in our lives trying to run it.

    November 14, 2011 at 1:29 pm |
  306. Ann

I think sugary drinks should be banned on campus because it is not healthy and it can lead to weight gain and increase the risk of diabetes.

    November 14, 2011 at 1:29 pm |
  307. Jeff

I think schools shouldn't ban sugary drinks they should keep them I believe it what keeps us going throughout the day. Banning them will result in students sleeping in classes, not having a steady brain, and it is our choice to drink them or not to drink them.

    November 14, 2011 at 1:29 pm |
  308. Bailey

I don't think sugary drinks should be banned from schools because it should be the students choice, we should know right from wrong. Cutting the drinks from school won't stop them from drinking them on their free time. Forcing kids to do something they don't agree with will only cause them to rebel.

    November 14, 2011 at 1:34 pm |
  309. keefe

I think that banning sugary drinks will not help the students drink less at school because they will just bring drinks from home.

    November 14, 2011 at 1:36 pm |
  310. Michael

Schools should choose for them selves if they want to stop selling surgery
its there choice not other schools

    November 14, 2011 at 1:36 pm |
  311. Courtney

It really won't make a difference either way if they keep the ban or get rid of it.

    November 14, 2011 at 1:44 pm |
  312. yanique

i think some should drink but they should have a limited amount of drinks in a party, because people dont know their limite

    November 14, 2011 at 1:50 pm |
  313. carlos

maybe but i think its alright if they put different drinks like gatorade or juices or different types of drinks (including soda)

    November 14, 2011 at 2:08 pm |

i think they should allow sugary drinks at school because schools can make money and kids and be happy.

    November 14, 2011 at 2:13 pm |
  315. Haley

What I think is that it should be bannedfrom school so people do not get over weight. And also so they can't make them unhealthy

    November 14, 2011 at 2:31 pm |
  316. Joey

I think pop machines should be allowed if students can be resposible with pop and if they cant the machine should be taken away from students.

    November 14, 2011 at 2:33 pm |
  317. Hayley

I believe that we should have pop mechines in our school because it will help our school out with money . Also kids love pop so they will probably buy pop everyday so it will also help the comany .

    November 14, 2011 at 2:34 pm |
  318. Haley

I think that it should be banned from school but once in atie they should let the kids have sugary drinks.

    November 14, 2011 at 2:35 pm |
  319. Brad

I think we should we should have soda machines on campus because kids love to drink this stuff

    November 14, 2011 at 2:37 pm |
  320. travis

I think we should have soda machines in school because the sugar could help keeping kids awake. Also we could get funds.Finnally we could get some profits from the machines.

    November 14, 2011 at 2:37 pm |
  321. jasmine

yes because then kids will get to drink what they like to drink.

    November 14, 2011 at 2:39 pm |
  322. keven

I think it would be awsome to have a soda machine in our school because every time I go to school I'm always sleepy so if we had a soda machine in our school I'll buy a coke every morning so I could have lots and lots of energy.

    November 14, 2011 at 2:40 pm |
  323. Madison

Adding sugary drinks can increase child obesity but schools get money from putting these drinks in the school. So what is more important money or healthy kids? I would say healthy kids.

    November 14, 2011 at 2:42 pm |
  324. Wendy

i think schools shouldn't ban sugary drinks at school because students get thirsty during class and lunch.

    November 14, 2011 at 2:42 pm |
  325. Jesse

Sugary Drinks should be allowed on campus because Students should be able to make their own decisions on what they drink. If a student does drink a sugary drink then it's his/her choice. If they choose not to, Then it shows they have restraint. Either way it's a choice. That's what becoming an adult is about, Making choices for yourself, Responsible ones hopefully.

    November 14, 2011 at 2:44 pm |
  326. mindy

I think that schools should sell all the different drinks. its our choice to buy them. so if someone is obese they can choose not to buy the drinks. its not the schools fault for them being the person that they are.

    November 14, 2011 at 2:44 pm |
  327. Joe

I think schools should let students drink sugary drinks because students should be able drink what they want when they are at school.

    November 14, 2011 at 2:44 pm |
  328. Mitzy

I don't think sugary drinks should be banned from schools because caffeine could lift up students energy in the morning .

    November 14, 2011 at 2:45 pm |
  329. Brenda

I don't think sugary drinks should be banned because students are going to drink them either way, it is not the schools job to raise awareness about obesity.

    November 14, 2011 at 2:45 pm |
  330. Samwel

i think that we have the right to drink whatever we want so what if you get fat its your decision. just because they are obese does not mean they are not happy

    November 14, 2011 at 2:46 pm |
  331. Patrick

Sugary drinks on campus shouldnt depend on what the school decides, but on what the student decides. I drink soda on a daily basis and hasnt affected me in the least bit. Sugary drinks are necessary to some, even if they might not be the healthiest. Dont ban them, there useful at some points but limit them.

    November 14, 2011 at 2:47 pm |
  332. aaron

i think the schools not ban soda because this is america. and in america you can drink whatever you want to

    November 14, 2011 at 2:47 pm |
  333. Nani

i think the High Schools should only have sugary drinks because they are at age where teens know how to take care of their own health and make their own decision of what beverages they want to drink.

    November 14, 2011 at 2:47 pm |
  334. gabby

a child has learned to say yes or no and has learned right from wrong. so it should be their choice to whether or not they want to drink a sugary drink on campus or not. the school cant make that choice for us. we're a democracy for a reason.

    November 14, 2011 at 2:47 pm |
  335. Sara

I think that schools that banned sugary drinks did that for a reason. To stop childhood obesity. If they were to start selling sugary drinks then students would buy them everyday. Then there would be no point in healthier choices like milk for instance because students would only drink soda and other sugary drinks.

    November 14, 2011 at 2:48 pm |
  336. Endy

I think that schools with the ban should keep them because we are encouraging the students to be active and healthy. We are advertising and telling parents that their should be active an hour a day so its a good idea to bad the soft drinks. Schools without ban should get them.

    November 14, 2011 at 2:49 pm |
  337. stefan

i think they shouldnt be banned in high schools because students there should know already what to drink and theyll know to keep it in moderation. Other schools like middle schools and elementary schools should because their health as little kids is more important so that their future ahead doesnt have to be hard.

    November 14, 2011 at 2:50 pm |
  338. Yan

If we consider that Sugary Drinks as junk food, and insisting to eliminate all that would harm to children in short or long term, then the government should also take the junk food that serves in the cafeteria, the technologies used in school which release radiation, and the teacher which stresses and damages the students emotional health with their homework and projects.

    November 14, 2011 at 2:51 pm |
  339. Kimmie

Drinking has nothing to do with childhood obesity. Sugary beverages SHOULD be allowed in school so that students may be able to obtain energy from the sugar that the sugary drink provides. So that sugar may access your mitochondria and that mitochondria may give us energy!! If we did allow sugary drinks in school we would all being paying more attention instead of having students sleeping in class due to no energy . If you do not allow us to drink sugary beverages in class, we would probably be drinking it anyway.

    November 14, 2011 at 2:52 pm |
  340. Noelle

I think they should allow sugary drinks in schools. It's not fair to kids to not be able to drink sugary drinks just because some kids are obese. It's the parents fault for not watching their diets, not the kids.

    November 14, 2011 at 2:53 pm |
  341. Dale

Honestly, the schools can't force kids to lose weight. Sugary drinks is a factor to obesity, but it's the kids choice if he or she wants to drink it. Its not the schools responsibility for the kids health.

    November 14, 2011 at 2:53 pm |
  342. kim

I think it shouldn't be allowed. I support you all the way! I love you Karl<3

    November 14, 2011 at 2:55 pm |
  343. Chris

No soda should not be sold on campus because it will increase the obesity in teens and adults. Also sugary foods make students react differently and they might not be able to focas on school work.

    November 14, 2011 at 2:56 pm |
  344. Rhea

The school campuses should allow sugary drinks on campus, and its always a students choice to drink it or not. If a student is thirsty maybe thats the only thing they have to drink at the time. Yes obesity is a problem, but its someone choice. It is the choices someone makes.

    November 14, 2011 at 2:57 pm |
  345. Richard

i believe they should sell sugary drinks at school because the school would earn a lot more money. I also believe it doesn't affect anything with obesity because if you wanted to be healthy you would make the choice to not drink sugary drinks. so schools should bring them back.

    November 14, 2011 at 2:57 pm |
  346. aaron

we should be able to drink what we want when we want

    November 14, 2011 at 2:58 pm |
  347. Will

I think that they should keep the juice because it is not as sugary as soda and that won't make kids fat

    November 14, 2011 at 2:58 pm |
  348. Zach

I think that they should be allowed to sell sugar drinks on campuses because its the kids choice to buy them or not and even if they didnt sell them on the campus i would still bring them to the school so it wouldnt stop me from drinking them so really they would make more money to fund the school for other things that the school needs and would benefit students.

    November 14, 2011 at 3:00 pm |
  349. Majdahlin

Honestly, I don't think sugary drinks affect a student's performance in school. A soda or coffee may not be as healthy as orange juice but will it really affect your grade on a math test ? I believe that the choice should be left to the students, not the schools.

    November 14, 2011 at 3:05 pm |
  350. Emma

I think we should have pop at school because even if we dont we would still drink it.

    November 14, 2011 at 3:33 pm |
  351. braden

i think we should have pop machines because some of the more tired people could be more awake

    November 14, 2011 at 3:37 pm |
  352. Erika

I think sugary drinks should be allowed in school, but it should only be limited to 1 drink per student.

    November 14, 2011 at 3:38 pm |
  353. Jacob

I dont think it really affects a students performence in school i think that it should be more up to the students if they want to have a pop or not and to limit how many they have.

    November 14, 2011 at 3:40 pm |
  354. antonio

we should be able to have them, because some kids need the energy

    November 14, 2011 at 3:44 pm |
  355. Brandon

Sugary Drinks should be added on campus (specifically caffeinated soda), and controlled by the teachers. They should not be given to people over their normal body weight.

    November 14, 2011 at 3:46 pm |
  356. Razzle

I think schools should sell drinks with sugar. Kids will drink sugar drink regardless if its in school or not.

    November 14, 2011 at 3:51 pm |
  357. Axel

I think its fine to do it a couple times out of a week, because sometimes we do need a little bit of sugar to keep us going through out our days. And if we remain fat it isn't due to the drinks, its due to our diets.

    November 14, 2011 at 3:55 pm |
  358. Jo

Well when they say that they should limit it or close the soda machine for a certain amount of days.

    November 14, 2011 at 4:00 pm |
  359. Tannor

I think students should be allowed to drink sugary drinks but with limits like only being able to drink them during lunches of recesses so that it doesn't affect there performance in class

    November 14, 2011 at 4:00 pm |
  360. Kelsey

I think that sugary drinks on campus at school affect some students and some not...but at my school there are soda vending machines in the teachers lounge which is not fair.

    November 14, 2011 at 4:11 pm |
  361. Kelsey

    :) i like sodas~!

    November 14, 2011 at 4:13 pm |

i dont think they shouldnt ban sugary drinks because its some drinks keep us awake.

    November 14, 2011 at 4:16 pm |
  363. jack

i think it should be allowed i mean if a student sleepy they will have drink and wont be tired anymore

    November 14, 2011 at 4:25 pm |
  364. mykayla

no i dont think sugery dirnks should be allowed on capas but just because you banish it at school dosn't mean they wont go home and drink it

    November 14, 2011 at 5:45 pm |
  365. Oindrila

I think they should continue to sell sugary drinks because It's going to help they can also drink them at home so. Also another idea Instead of sugary drinks they can just start selling friut juice or V8's if they really want to help. Students should choose if they want to drink it or not.

    November 14, 2011 at 5:46 pm |
  366. Denise

I believe that sugary drinks don't affect a child"s performance. I drink soda in the morning to wake me up and I have straight A's in school.
Yes, soda can affect child obesity, but it is that child's decision to drink and eat like that. You are what you eat.

    Sincerely,

    Denise

    November 14, 2011 at 6:01 pm |
  367. Cathy

Honestly, I think sugary drinks should be removed from campuses because kids will gain weight and be teased. We already have a high rate of teen sueside because of bullying do you want to cause more?

    November 14, 2011 at 6:12 pm |
  368. Emmah

I think they are doing the right thing because there is childhood obesity all over the world. I think obesity is very dangerous. Sometimes people get very ill or seriously injured.

    November 14, 2011 at 6:55 pm |
  369. Jesse

I think banning the sugary drink will only encourage stundents to get them off campus.

    November 14, 2011 at 7:08 pm |
  370. Parker

I think thier should be a limit for drinking sodas during school. If not, it could lead to getting cavities quicker than usual. It's alright to drink sodas now and then, but drinking it all the time isn't healthy.

    November 14, 2011 at 7:22 pm |
  371. Cole

I think sugary drinks should not be allowed on campus, because kids spend the majority of their time at school and it could be worth a shot at preventing childhood obesity.

    November 14, 2011 at 7:27 pm |
  372. Rid

i think sugary drinks should not be banned from campus. teenagers are old enough to make the right choices

    November 14, 2011 at 7:27 pm |
  373. Darian

If schools ban selling sugary drinks most people would buy the drinks and bring them to school. It wouldn't end childhood obsecity because you are only stopping it in school when they could go home and drink anything they want.

    November 14, 2011 at 8:18 pm |
  374. Jacob

They shouldn't because if they drink too much, they will get too much sugar in their bodies and they will stay up late and they will get tired in the morning, so they should put water and milk to drink.

    November 14, 2011 at 8:24 pm |
  375. Kaitlyn

I think they should be banned, because, even though we drink them out of school, at least it shows the school is trying. Kind of like when other countries have different opinions, one shouldn't change their rules, because others can get away with it in other places.

    November 14, 2011 at 8:50 pm |
  376. David

I think that they should allow sugary drinks because some may have not had breakfast. Also because some kids need the energy cause they're tired and sleepy.

    November 14, 2011 at 9:09 pm |
  377. Mary

Obesity in America is a huge problem. Banning sugary drinks should be allowed, even encouraged, in schools. Some would argue that it is not up the schools to decide wether or not kids can have sugary drinks, but after drinking them, kids get hyper and distracted. It is just like banning cell phones.

    November 14, 2011 at 10:00 pm |
  378. jordon

I think they the should sell sugary drinks in school because sugar keeps kids more awake awake and when there more awake they will be able to concentrate a little better and get a better education

    November 14, 2011 at 10:09 pm |
  379. Tala

people should be allowed to drink what they want but take care and think of what they are drinking

    November 15, 2011 at 6:48 am |
  380. Katy

If I was a student who drank sugary drinks and I was in a school with a ban on them I would be happy to get them unbaned but I would also know that they could cause obesity so I should have self control.

    November 15, 2011 at 7:45 am |
  381. Henry

Realisticly, you have three options. One, you can ban drinks brought into the school, which would cause anger among the parents; two, you can allow drinks freely, which may not be a good idea; or three, you can just do nothing.

    at my school we are not aloud to have sugar drinks so i think they {as in other schools} SHOULD HAVE SUGAR DRINKS {I LUV DR PEPPER}

    November 15, 2011 at 9:24 am |
  383. Kevin

I think they should be able to drink the drinks on campus because it is just a drink i mean i could see if it was alchol or something but it is a soda so they should just let them drink it if they want to i mean get really.

    November 15, 2011 at 10:06 am |
  384. Valerie

I think that having sugary drinks are bad for kids because kids get diabetes and also high blood pressure. So my oppinion is NO.

    November 15, 2011 at 11:29 am |
  385. nerd

Well i think that we should have sugery drinks because its mostly kids choice and most kids want to have drinks and other things. Kids really wouldnt want to get spomething they do not want.

    November 15, 2011 at 11:30 am |
  386. mike

It is not good to drink soda in the morning it bad for your body so if you want to destroy your your life. You have to stop .

People should have a choice to have sugary drink or not.

    November 15, 2011 at 11:57 am |

I think people who have sugary drinks need to take them off of campus. That is really bad.

For Soda Drinkers I Think People Should Not Drink High Sugar Drinks Before School Because People Could Crassh In School. That Means Your Work Is Probally Not Going TO Be Done.

    November 15, 2011 at 12:10 pm |
  390. Niko

I think they should let kids drinks sugary drinks. Sugary is a child's life best firend. Also, kids might be tired and they need a little boost to wake up. Yes, soda can affect child obesity, but that is the childs choice to moderate the amount they drink.

    November 15, 2011 at 12:31 pm |
  391. steven

I think that students should get permission from their parents to drink sweet drinks at school.

    November 15, 2011 at 12:33 pm |
  392. Marcel

i think we should allow sugery drinks because there is always extra caricular activites that can help children stay in shape instead of allowing obesity.

    November 15, 2011 at 12:36 pm |
  393. patrick

i think they should keep on selling sugury drinks because stopping people from a sugury drink wont keep them more fit honestly we pack our own lunch's

    November 15, 2011 at 12:39 pm |
  394. Nikki

My honest opinion is to allow them. Sugar helps kids stay awake, and isn't that what teachers want?

    November 15, 2011 at 12:43 pm |
  395. Emily

I think there should be drinks like that becase it get the kids going and so one day the get the drinks and the next the don't!

I think that not allowing sugary drinks at school is not going to stop children from drinking them. When kids know that they can't do something, it makes them want to do it even more. Sugary drinks are not good for your health but they can give you energy to stay awake in class.

    Sincerely ,

Weather or not sugary drinks are aloud on campus or not kids will always find a way to get a sugary drink. I think it's pointless to ban sugary drink, it doesnt always effect peoples actions. Becaue suger doesnt make you hyper anyway. It's just a way to help stay awake in class. So yea. Pretty pointless to me. But that's what I think. You may think differently but oh well..

I think its a good idea to ban sugary drinks in schools, because we spend most of our days in school. By baning sugary drinks in schools, students are less likely to drink them all the time,

I don't see what's wrong with selling sugary drinks at school. Just because it's not sold at school won't keep the kids from drinking it. They should be able to drink what they want. I drink sugary things all the time and I still do well academically. What's the difference?

No they should ban sugary drinks. Even though its just a little amount being cut that little portion could make a huge difference.

i think that kids eating sugary foods at school is a good idea because kids needs some energy after just sitting down at school for long hours so if they had free time they could ask the teacher if they could go to the vending machine and get what they wanted even though it might lead to child obesty than just tell the kid after you went once you cant go anymore

i think you could just sell them only on Fridays ,monthly or even at school parties like student of the month . Its not like its every day just keep the sodas limited.

I think that schools should allow drinks in school but not pop. It gives students more energy so that way they can pay attention more and not fall asleep in class. I do drink gatorade in class and it does give me more energy.

Kids should be able to choose what their drinks. My school closed our vending machine but kids still bring sugary drinks to school. Kids will still bring those drinks to school no matter what.

I think that some students sometimes need that extra boost of sugar in their body, but on order to maintain the students health, it is up to the school to put the right kind of sugary drinks on sale.

I think that they should let them but only once a day. Sugary drinks help the students stay awake but too much can make them sick.
