Capital Punishment

Capital punishment is an issue that people have very strong feelings about, whether they support or oppose it, so please don't think there's a right or wrong answer here.  We'd just like to get your thoughts about this polarizing subject after hearing it covered on Friday's show.

Capital punishment is wrong. The capital of a country should not have different punishments than another city. People from different places may not act the same, but they are still human beings. Just like you and me.

Killers shouldn't be allowed to live, because they took the life of someone else.

I think that capitol punishment is wrong unless their is solid proof of the murder. What happened was wrong because there was not enough evidence to say that he did it. I believe he should have been jailed for a long amount of time, not capitol punishment.

i belive in capital punishment. i belive if you have commited a crime were anyone has been killed you deserve the same fate. i do belive though that all evidence from the case shold be looked at and considerd. even if it is small amounts that small amount of evidence can decied the whole trial

I believe we should use capital punishments more often as they will keep crime rates low and save tax payers money.

I Think Capital Punishment is good for our soicety because we need to get rid of some of the people that's doing the murdering, and rapeing and these things that hurt our soicety and the these children. I Believe that they shold have in most states cause most people doesn't get caugth with the most tragic murders, and homicides. Family Are being hurt and also our society

I am always on the side that has less misfourtune, but I think that death penalties are reasonable to have because it is best from events like 9/11 of the murder group to serve death penalties than to allow them to murder many more innocent people.

I agree with it in theory, but not in practice.

I think those convicted and sentenced to the DP spend too much time in prison. They receive food, medical care, shelter and entertainment for "free".

That money could be better spent on reforming other criminals, feeding and housing the homeless or education to prevent crime in the first place.

personally, i think that capital punishment is a terrible policy. humans should never make the call about whether or not another person has the right to live.

Capital punishment is a not or good thing or bad thing. It brings justice to the person found guilty for their charges. But it is a bad thing when someone that your not sure committed the crime gets sentenced to death. There has to be proof that the person is 100% guilty before they get put to death.

it is wrong to have the capital punishment because no one deserves to die for something they may have or not done let them live in prison for the rest of there lives not death it only brings more thats how a war gets started.

It's wrong, period. I think the worst punishment should be a life sentence in jail. No one deserves to die as a punishment.

I think that it is unfair to kill them. It's not right no mater what they did. No one deserves to be killed to killed for any reason at all. No mater what they did I don't it is fair to take someones life.

I think it is not good because killing is painful because he his friends and family will be sad to loose a loved one and it isn't fun for anybody's friend or family to be killed because once he's dead, he is dead forever and there's no way that people can make up for the loss.

    September 22, 2011 at 8:59 pm |
  15. Clara

It's not very fair because what if we realized that the person given the death penalty was innocent AFTER they got the penalty? The person would be gone forever and the mistake would have to weigh on everyone's minds.

I support the death penally as long as the original crime was severe enough.

Capital punishment should be illegal because even if someone commits a capital crime, they do not deserve to die. Life is something that everyone deserves no matter what their crime. It is a human right. If they decide to kill people for crimes they might not have even committed it would be sending out a message that it is okay to murder innocent people on the street. Killing one man for committing a crime won't stop another from doing it.

i think the death penalty is a good idea but only if it is a serious crime in other words "an eye for an eye"

    September 22, 2011 at 9:15 pm |
  19. Alice

I think that people should not use the death penalty as a punishment, because it takes somethings as important as a life to be thrown away for a punishment as severe as a crime. Also, the death penalty is permanent and cannot be undone, so if the punished person was proved guilty several years later, the wrongly convicted cannot be brought back. There are other ways in punishing those who have committed murder instead of killing them.

Well, i think capitol punishment is wrong. People shouldn't be forced to die. They should die naturally. Those 32 states are making a mistake with capitol punishment.

I"m not sure to the exact of what capital punishment is but I can respond to what I know. Many argue against capital punishment. The capital punishment is basically The penalty of death for the commission of a crime. I agree with it being a Undecidable option of being wrong or right in are country. I would say that it is right to have it in the U.s and others. I don't feel that it should be used Against anyone unless they are fully sure that a person is guilty of commiting a crime.

    September 22, 2011 at 9:44 pm |
  25. David

I think capital punishment should administered when the situation calls for it. If someone can take away another persons life, they clearly don't have any respect for their own. People need to be held accountable for their actions

ahh this subject catches my attention even though i cant put my finger on it. one side of me says capital punishment is immoral another side says otherwise. im going to go with it being immoral considering killing someone because they killed someone only creates more negative friction. but i can see someone using capital punishment against someone who has killed thousands of people but it is still immoral. what ive realized with my country the u.s.a is that when it comes to everyone else we say capital punishment is immoral but yet we preform it in the u.s.a. do i sense Hypocrisy? i think so. so no i do not believe in the abomination called capital punishment

My World Affairs Class in 7th period watches your show everyday and it's awesome! Anyways, I believe capital punishment should be supported. People who are guilty for a crime should be sentenced to death and be off our streets. Innocent people who have done nothing are being killed everyday all around the world. Life is already hard enough; I don't need to be worrying about watching out for a killer on the loose. So, if you put an end to violence the world might get a little bit better.

I strongly oppose capital punishment. I believe I remember in 5th grade having a Social Studies unit on the Constitution, and in the Constitution, it says that punishments for crimes cannot be extremely severe or painful.

I think that it is wrong, just as "two wrongs don't make a right", and "an eye for an eye just makes the whole world blind." Ghandi.
Killing a killer just makes you a killer, and it is not justifying what they did, and you can not tell your children and family that you are an innocent good person if you murder somebody else. Especially if it is in cold blood, like capital punishment.
I don't care if a person kills half of the planet, no one is completely innocent or pure, we all lie and make mistakes, and just because someone does more than someone else DOES NOT make them inhumane. It just means that they need to learn that what they did was wrong, and make up for it. There are other ways! Community service, prison, money... the list goes on and on.
I don't care how many times someone does something bad. You should forgive them "not seven times, but seventy times seven".

I think that the U.S should use capital Punishment, because it enforces laws, and shows crimnals that they cant go around killing people. But the U.S needs to be careful because they cant go around serving the death penelty to anyone that has none nothing. The U.S also shouldnt use anything too cruel, even with the eighth ammendment, some punishments are still a bit cruel.

Capital Punishment, like communism, sounds like a good IDEA. But I do not think we can trust our government to make the right call. I would rather a guilty person sit in jail than an innocent person be put to death.

This, to me, is very hipocritical to me, klling IS illegal right? However, under the right circumstances I guess this could be allright. Ultamate crimes equal ultamate punishment, but there has to be solid proof.

To me this is highly hipocritical, killing is illegal. However with the right circumstances this could be acceptable. Afterall the ultamate crime equals the ultamate punishment, I just think that there should be solid proof before someone is exicuted.

I think that death is scary, but that from my point of view. I don't think that the capital punishment is right. I think that just putting the person in jail is right so they can have a long time to think about what they did. When I was little my mom use to punish me when I did something wrong and would send me to my room, That way I notice what i did wrong i can learn from my actions and i don't think death is a right punishment

    September 23, 2011 at 12:16 am |
  45. Stephanie

First I don't think I have the right to play GOD. But I have never been in a situation like that where I am a family member of the person who is being put to death or a part of the the victims family and I hope I never am. This man spent a long time on death row waiting to die. We have heard the stories where the person who was put to death and they find out that this person didn't do it after all then what and who is to blame.
But then sometimes I feel that if you would see a person hanging in the
middle of your town maybe you would think twice before committing the crime. Remember the kid in China who vandalized property and he was flogged I wonder what lesson he learned and what he is doing now.

We do not have the right in us to take a life although sometimes it's nessisary. Capital punishment sould only be used on crimals who have no remorse and have solid prove of their crime. Justice is one thing but dont repay evil for evil.

Capital punishment should only be used in the appropriate circumstances. If a person willingly committed murder and there is evidence to support it, then capital punishment would be a form of justice.
But if a person is accused of committing murder, and doesn't have strong supporting evidence to support the case, then capital punishment could mean the death of an innocent human being.

I think capitol punishment is fine and is a good way to put some people to justice because sometimes crimes are too big and jail just isn't enough. Although, it should probably happen when the case is perfectly clear, that way you don't end up having an innocent man put to death

    September 23, 2011 at 7:29 am |
  56. Britta

I think that Capitol punishment is a great way to protect this country. Not many people deserve it but murderers do. I believe that anyone who takes a life doesn't deserve to live, not even in jail.

In our society i think we have enough punishment not to resort to the death punishment. In some cases it might seem to be "a justice" but to take another life instead of liveing out the pinishment is in my opinion not right.

The United States is one of the only developed nations in the world to still use capital punishment. A sentence of life in prison without parole gives a similar result without the possibility of taking an innocent life.

i believe that capital punishment is right because if people kill other people than they need to die. especially if they killed more than one person. The government should not get red of capital punishment.

They say that the death penalty is for when you kill someone right.? Well if you give someone the death penalty then your killing that person so you should get it, but that would mean going in a continuing circle of death. I don't believe in it. I think that you should just go to Jail for the rest of your life there.

I think that Capital Punishment is okay to a certain degree. If there's still people who don't believe that that person did kill that other person ; then I don't think it's okay. But it is okay if the person for sure really did kill the person, then they should be punished for what they did.

Capital Punishment shouldn't be allowed. Everyone deserves a second chance. The U.S. Constitution even has an amendment against cruel and unusual punishment. Everybody's a human being, and we all deserve to be treated like human beings

Captiol punishment is only necessary if the criminal is proven guilty with every piece of incriminating evidense, otherwise it's wrong

I personally don't believe in death sentences for one who murders. Is it not the same thing, to kill a killer? Are we also committing the same crime, if we do give them capital punishment? If we truly wanted to punish them ourselves, would it be more fitting to let them suffer in jail instead of a quick death?

    September 23, 2011 at 8:04 am |

I think it is wrong, because you don't know 100% that the person is guilty. Just because someone kills someone, doesn't mean that they should be killed.

    September 23, 2011 at 8:09 am |
  69. Steve

Capitol Punishment should used only if there is enough evidence to use it. You can't use the death penalty when there is no evidence that the suspect killed the victim.

    September 23, 2011 at 8:11 am |
  70. Megan

If the crime was despicable or fierce enough, I think he/she should be given the death penalty. On the other hand, if the crime is low and he/she does not plead guilty, the person should be given a sentence, but the not penalty.

    September 23, 2011 at 8:19 am |
  71. Avery

I am against capital Punishment, especially if the person that is convicted is not guilty. My class talked about a case in which a man was not proved guilty, but he was given capital punishment. I do not believe capital punishment should be enforced on any cases in which the convicted has not been completely proven guilty.

    September 23, 2011 at 8:22 am |
  72. Cathryn

Capital punishment is a harsh punishment, but I do not think that it should be abolished. States shouldn't be doing it to people unless they have 100% proof that the person is guilty of their crime and that the crime is worthy of capital punishment. Where to draw the line on who deserves capital punishment and who doesn't is where things get sticky, but I do not think capital punishment should be taken away from the states. Only so many people can sit in jail, so eventually someone will have to go.

    September 23, 2011 at 8:24 am |
  73. Brandon

I oppose the capital punihsment laws, because if people are put in prison i think that is a bad enough punishment. but i think giving someone the death penalty would be wrong. that person has a family. i also think that would be double jepurty. Because he had already been put in prison but now you want to put him to death. plus it says it in the bible depending on your religion. One of the commanment says thou shall not kill. When you put man to death penalty that is killing man kind. Sure he killed someone but two wrongs dont make it right.

    September 23, 2011 at 8:25 am |
  74. ETHAN

Well i think that the death punishment is totaly not right.I think that if you did somthing bad enough to get the death sentence you should have life in prison because the death penalty is just torcher to the person. Its cruel, mean, and nobody should kill anybody for what they have done. Thanks hope you enjoyed.

I think execution is okay and actually good we used it for centuries and we turn out great. The inmates would more likely learn their lesson with life in prison though.

Capital punishment is sometimes necessary. If someone only killed one person, it isn't needed. Although, if there were several deaths, capital punishment should be used.

I am totally against the capital punishment our constitution states beyond a reasonable doubt. If we can't prove it is shouldn't be!

  79. Sean

I think that it is not fair if you don't have proof. An eye for an eye does not mean that we as a nation has the right to be a killer. It (our Constitution) says "beyond a reasonable doubt."

    September 23, 2011 at 8:34 am |
  80. Noble

The death penalty is not the answer, proof is important and no one else should die if it is not beyond a reasonable doubt. Who should be a god other than God?

  81. Emily

Capital punishment can be a good thing. It serves justic to those who committed serious crimes. However, there is always some chance, however small, that the person sentenced to death rowe is innocent. Just like people have been put in jail for crimes they did not commit, there could have been people who were killed for a crime they did not commit. In my opinion, capital punishment should only be used in cases where the jury is more than 100% sure that the suspect committed the crime. There needs to be strong evidence, to make sure that the death penalty is not used unnecesssarily. If there is any doubt in a trial or case, the accused should only be sentenced to life in jail.

    September 23, 2011 at 9:17 am |
  82. Rebecca

I definitely oppose the death penalty. If someone is punished with the death penalty, they only suffer from the time of the verdict, to the time executed. Although the time in between the verdict and the execution tends to be long, it would be a better punishment if the criminal was put in prison for life. Then, their suffering would be a lot longer. If they are killed, their suffering ends. A lifetime in prison could almost triple the amount of time suffering.

    September 23, 2011 at 9:17 am |
  83. Paige

In my opinion, criminal punishment should be legal. If someone is willing to take another person's life, then their life should be taking as well. However, depending on the severity of the circumstances life in jail is almost as bad. Sitting in jail and rotting away until you die is another horrible thing. Knowing that there is nothing for you to do and no where for you to go for the rest of your life. No one's life should be cut short from what it should be, so if someone kills another, the death penalty should absolutely be used.

I personally feel that capital punishment is unjust in Troy Davis' circumstance. People who have comitted a crime and are sentenced to the death penalty usually plead guilty the last minute and try to work out a deal so they can live. Troy Davis though pleaded innocent all the way up until he died. He even told the victims family that he did not kill their son and continued to plead innocent. Personally i feel he was innocent. Another thing that was suspicious was that 7 out of the 9 witnesses came back and changed their stories to say it wasnt him. This in my mind is just another reason why he was innocent. Yes, i agree that the Death penalty is valuable in certain cases but not this one. It was an unfair punishment.

If the government is taking action to get rid of abortion because it is murdering a yet to be born child, then they should be doing the same for the death penalty because it is the murder of a already born human being.

    September 23, 2011 at 9:18 am |
  86. Sean

Capital Punishment is the worst idea this country has ever had. Life in prison without parole is enough to do some damage even if they took the life of someone. If the murderer took the life of someone does it make it right to take his life too. This just means that you’re a murderer too and you have the same sins and convicted the same crime as the killer. It does not matter if your the supreme court judge. If you give the death penalty to someone, evevitable you killed him. The same way he killed the victim.

    September 23, 2011 at 9:19 am |

Capital punishment is a supposes to help people abstain from violence as a threat to take the one thing that cannot be replaced, one's own life. But even when the most distorted images of retaliation or inhumane actions are committed, how can we make these people see the wrong in their actions when it is the very same thing we will do onto them in response. Murder onto the murderer simply frees them from the lifelong suffering jail sentence that they deserve.

The government should not be able to decide the fate of a person. There should be punishment if it is necessary but there should be no death penalty.

"An eye for an eye makes the world blind" Gandhi once said, and rightfully so. If killing for a crime is the only way for a person to get justice in their life, than that person needs to re-think his motives. Revenge never feels as good as you think it will. How much different are you from the person who did you the injustice if you do the same injustice to them? Personally, I believe that capital punishment, no matter how inhumane the offense, is never the just punishment. It just takes away from the years that they would have to suffer in prison.

I strongly support Capital Punishment. People who commit dreadful crimes such as rape and murder shouldn't be simply sent off to prision where they may even get parole after doing these things. Kill them and get it over with.

  91. Bridgette

I think that people should get Capital Punishment only if the person is 100% guilty. I would hate to see someone die if they're innocent.

I do not agree at all with the death penalty. I think it is wrong in every way. No one deserves to lose there life, and lets be honest a lifetime in jail is a lot bigger punishment than the death penalty.

    September 23, 2011 at 9:27 am |
  93. Julianne

I agree with capital punishment. Some say that a life in jail would be worse and I think that may be true because even though you die, at least you get it over with. A life in jail is awful. I do agree with the Death Penalty though. I think that if you comitted a crime bad enough, like kiling someone, you should die.

    September 23, 2011 at 9:28 am |
  94. Caitlyn

I think Capital Punishment should only be used if they can prove 100% that the defendent is quilty. If there is even 1% of innocence proven, capital punishment should not be the answer.

    September 23, 2011 at 9:28 am |
  95. Sophie

I agree with Capital Punishment because if someone did something really bad ( for example murder) you should get a big punshiment. Whether your punishment is life in jail, or maybe you go on death row the person who did it definetly deserves it.

    September 23, 2011 at 9:28 am |
  96. Nicki

I think the death penalty is good AND bad. Many people deserve it, but also, many dont deserve it. I think that some people would honestly rather sit in jail for the rest of their lives. Others may feel the opposite but I believe that if you get convicted of a crime and you are sentenced to death, they should have to have a LOT of proof that you comitted the crime.

Captial Punishment is very complicated. I agree with capital punishment and that it should be used effectively. I think about the families and at least some closure brought to them. Justice should be brought forth.

Capital punishment/death penalty is a good and bad idea. The reason why this is a bad idea is because it cost alot of money and we dont have a great economy right now. But the reason why this is a good idea is because they rightfully deserve it! If they have killed someone else they should die to!

    September 23, 2011 at 9:30 am |

I believe in the death penalty. However i will say that unless the court system is absolutley sure that the person is guilty then they should only be senteced to a life in jail or until the true culprit comes forward. Somehow I doubt that it is cheaper to keep them in jail for 40+ years so I do not believe that is a viable arguement as we have to pay for food, health care, and other life necessities.

I dont think its right because its not right to take somebody's life they should just do things like keeping them in jail there whole life and/or making them do a certian amount of community service.

capital punishment should not be used because people should not be put to death because they did unless it is that serious or that important that people are in danger

I think we should have Capital Punishment, because if someone kills someone then get caught. If we did not have the Capital Punishment when they got out of jail the could be so mad and just kill more innocent people, but if we do the innocent people can still be here on Earth. If the police let them out of jail it is like the police killing the innocent people. If they kill someone then they get of the hook, then they think they could do it again. That is just not right.

Honestly , I Believe That Capatial Punishment Isnt Needed Unless They Have All The Evidence And Know Everything About The Case . Some Cases They Are Killing People That Are Innocent Like Troy Davis , Also Because Some Officers Are Dirty Or Bad Cops And They Force People To Make Statements That Were Incorrect . Capitial Punishment Isnt The Best Thing To Me And I Honestly Think It Shouldnt Be Used .

Capital punishment is ok sometimes when use in a right way, like is the person is on trial for being a serial kileer then yes they should be punish with Capital punishment. But i dont really think that it should be a first suggestion, maybe there are crooked people in the police force or the crime isnt really that serious, so captial punishment should be use if the crime is extreme even if the person killed a cop they shouldnt be punish wit Capital.

I think before killing Troy Davis, they shoulded have waited a little longer because people think he did it and people think he didnt do it. I blieve that this case was a races cace bacause a cop white cop got killed by a black man in the south, i believe the trail soulded been fair.

I think capital punishment is fine because if someone kills 5 people, then they should get the death penalty.

    September 23, 2011 at 9:50 am |

I believe that capital punishment is a very serious matter and should be deeply considered before it occurs. I think that it should be administered only to the most horrible crimes. However, life in jail can be a punishment worst than death. If the crime was awful, the courts should decide on the fate of the offender.

    September 23, 2011 at 9:50 am |
  114. Bobby

the death penatel is something good/bad. i think they should have listen to the people that were faored by the police. the trialwas not fair. i think they just found a black man to blamebecause it was a white cop killed.i really do believe that troy was inocent.

    September 23, 2011 at 9:52 am |

I think capital punishment is necessary in some cases, but not all. If someone is serial killer then yes they deserve to die. If there isn't enough evidence to prove the killing then I see no reason to for that person to be put to death because it's not fair.

It takes a lot of money for capital punishment to take place. That guy in georgia was put to death and to me it didn't really seem fare because they didn't have any evidence that he killed the police officer. So i disagree with the death penalty.

I think that capital punishment is wrong and inhumane. If a person is convicted of murder why would you murder them back? I think life in prison is a better punishment.

    September 23, 2011 at 9:54 am |
  120. Danielle

I think capital punishment is cruel and harsh because i dont think you should kill another human being . What of the person just rbbed a bank i think they should just serve a certain amout of time in prison than them getting the legal ejection and dying. Also like for troy davis foor exmaple they aint have enough evidence to know if he killed the offcier or not but he still was on detah row nd end up being sentenced to death couple years after . So yes , i am very against capital punishment they mines welln just get rid of it.

    September 23, 2011 at 9:54 am |

I think that capital punishment is ok if the court has a good reason to do so. Also if someone kidded a person and a court has hard proof then that person should have the same consinquence.

I think that capital punishment is wrong. It's wrong because everybody should have the right to life..... no matter what wrong things that person has done. I think it would be just as bad to have life in prision. I mean those people are going to die one day, why can't they just wait till then?

    September 23, 2011 at 9:56 am |
  123. Alex

What i think about the Troy Davis is that they had killed him for no reason. They should listen to the people when they were talking about it.The police should have did everything to listen to them.Troy Davis was doing things right to get out of troble.

I disagree with capital punishment because i think its unfair that someone has the authority to say their going to take someone else life. Everyone has a death date, and is going to die eventully so why cant they just sit the rest of their life in jail. Instead of taking their life, and making them suffer i think spending the rest of their life in jail is enough punishment.

    September 23, 2011 at 9:56 am |

I do belive in capitol punishment as long as it is for a good reason. Like if someone murdered someone that is a good reason.

I agree and Disagree because I don't feel it's right to just kill people just because they made a mistake. But , at the same time there is criminals out there that just don't care and that's going to do what they want. Basically I feel as though the death penalty should only be used for a reason, Only use it when it is meant to be used .

    September 23, 2011 at 9:57 am |
  127. Zaire

I agree and disagree.I think that it depends on what the case is. If somone did a crime that deserves a death penalty then they should keep. But they shouldn't sentence somone to a death penalty if they dont have enough evidence on the case or if the person does not deserve that penalty. If they don't deserve it they should just put them in jail.

    September 23, 2011 at 9:57 am |

I think capital punishment is necessary in some cases, but not all. If someone is serial killer then yes they deserve to die. If there isn't enough evidence to prove the killing then I see no reason to for that person to be put to death because it's not fair. I always try to put myself in other peoples shoes and if I was being put to death for something they had no evidence of me doing then I would be very upset.

  129. Shane

I am against Capitol Punishment for these reasons. First The Police or FBI should have all their evidence in order. Someone might be innocent and they died because of someone else killing a federal officer.
Second they should have waited until they found actual evidence against him until they had found the weapon and then convicted him of murder.Last If they did not have fingerprints proving someone guilty they should not be arrested. Everyone Is innocent until proven guilty. This is why i am against capitol punishment.

    September 23, 2011 at 9:57 am |
  130. Ann-Renee

I think it is wrong to kill even if they killed someone. It is easier on them to be killed then spending the rest of there life in jail. The longer they spend in jail the mre time they have to think about what they did wrong and no that it was wrong to do that. Also it will prevent people from being killed inosently.

    September 23, 2011 at 9:57 am |
  131. Tyra

I think that they should support capital punishment overall. I agree with it because I think if someone does a really really bad crime such as murder to a certain degree, they deserve to die for what they have done. This is only in some cases though. They should have lots of lots of evidence, not just one or two things! If it is something that they have alittle bit of evidence for the crime then they should think of an alternitave punishment, no matter who it is.

    September 23, 2011 at 9:58 am |
  132. roslyn

I agree and also, I disagree with the capital punishment because although someone may have done something wrong they don't deserve to die. I also, agree because if someone does something they should get the same in return. So if someone killed someone they should die as well but a lot of times you don't know for sure if they really did it, So why kill someone if they may be innocent?

i dissagree with the policy of the death pentaly.first of all, i dont think anyone should determine weather somone should die or not. also i dont think that anyone should die nomatter what they do wrong, who is the government to determine weather you should die or not. dont get me wrong you should be punished for doing something wrong but you dont diserve to die. and if it does come down to the death pentaly you got to have more than enough information or prof saying that the person did wrong thank you!!!!!!

  134. Shatawn

I am totally against capital punishment for many reasons. In my opinion capital punishment is unfair and wrong. I think its unfair because your taking someone`s life. It doesn`t matter if that person killed someone or commited another crime, two wrongs do not make a right. For the government to kill someone who killed somebody else, that sets a bad example. That makes it as if you`re saying when someone does wrong to me, I have to get revenge, and thats not always whats right. That might make people in the streets think that its okay for them to kill the person who may have killed one of their family members. That isn`t right either. I think its wrong because the people who are getting capital punishment have a family also. If you think about how tragic it was for the other person who lost their family, think about how it would be for that family. Thats why I think capital punishment is wrong.

I think capital punishment is wrong. We have no right to take a man/women life it says in the bible that only god has the right to destroy man. I’m pretty sure that were not god so we don’t have the right to take anyone else life. There is much wrong in what you’re doing as much as what he/she did. Plus I feel that capital punishment is cruel and usually punishment which is part of our 8th amendment

    September 23, 2011 at 10:00 am |
  136. Jillian

I think that capital punishment in some cases is justice served but when certain cases lack evidence they should not be able to carry out the death penalty because some people could be innocent.

    September 23, 2011 at 10:02 am |
  137. Jalen

I strongly appose the capital punishment, because of the fact that a person is a person the death penalty is very harsh. Espically when the courts do not know if the person is all the way guilty.

    September 23, 2011 at 10:06 am |
  138. alan

i think capitial punishment is a good thing because the people that comminted serious crimes deserve justice. if capitial punishment dosent work then going to jail for life is good enough

    September 23, 2011 at 10:11 am |
  139. R.J.

I kind of have mixed feelings about capital punishment, because if the person who commited the crime is found guilty and they have proof it was them then i'd be okay with the death penalty but if the court has no proof it was them that commited the crime then i'd be pretty angry if they got that penalty.

    September 23, 2011 at 10:14 am |
  140. Andrew

I don't support it because people should get a second chance....unless the person didn't care of the crime and didn't regret it.

    September 23, 2011 at 10:15 am |
  141. Jonathan

I believe that Capital Punishment should be allowed, as long as it is used to justifiy a malicious crime. It should be used in moderation because it is very expensive. It would be less expensive to just put them in Prison for Life.

    September 23, 2011 at 10:16 am |
  142. Joseph

I believe taking someone's life is one of the worst crimes someone can commit. And taking the life of a killer, in my opinion, is just punishment for that crime. We, as a country, should be able to trust the justice system to make the right decision every time and so the Troy Davis case, to the dismay of many, was closed and he was given the punishment for what he was accused of.

    September 23, 2011 at 10:16 am |

I am for it only if it has gone through the sysem.people with anti-social disorder shouldn't live if the kill someone. They shold be killed because they are just wasting tax payer money. If their was a jailbreak and all the murderers taken out people would die. Carlie manson deserves to die for what he has done to all those families.

  145. Alex

I am with the death penalty because if you kill a person once you go to prison. If you kill anather person you so get executed. We should be able to get another chance.the only problem in the death penalty is what if the criminal didn't do it?

    September 23, 2011 at 4:28 pm |
  146. Joanna

I think that capital punishment is ok if you commit a bad crime like murder. Also they should have good proof that that person committed that crime. If they don't have facts or if they didn't commit a really bad crime then I think that there is no reason to put that person to death. If they let someone who murdered someone out of jail then there is a chance that they will do it again, if they die, they can't.

    September 23, 2011 at 4:29 pm |
  147. Sekoya

I am having troubles deciding whether or not not we should have the death penalty so I am on both sides. I am with it because some people like jail because they have no worries, they make their food, they still get recess, they give them some where to sleep, they give them a bathroom, they have no bills to pay so some people like it there. A reason I am against it is because sometimes you don't know if that person truly did it so you may be executed an Innocent person. Another reason is that some people might not have did something that bad and they might deserve another chance in life. I will keep thinking about it and hopefully I will come to a choice.

    September 23, 2011 at 4:31 pm |
  148. Mackenzie

I support the death penalty because if they did one thing to someone and then people say to give them a second chance they may be pretending that they are good when they can just be acting that jail has helped them change but it may have not have helped them change.

  149. Maddie

I am against the idea of executing a man or woman if he or she just murdered just one person and got executed for it I think that that is wrong.but I think that is would be right if he spent 16 or 17 year in prison and was on parole for 4 to 5 year and still had second chance and if he murdered another person them I agree that he or she should be executed for he or she's crime.

    September 23, 2011 at 4:32 pm |
  150. Kemsley

I support the death penalty because I don't think it's right for people to go kill innocent people. If people do and they are found guilty they should be executed so that they don't kill even more people when they get out if they get out and so if they did commit murder they wouldn't have a chance of killing people in jail.

    September 23, 2011 at 4:32 pm |
  151. Al

I think that it is a good idea and a bad idea. I think it is a good idea because it will make criminals not steal and murder. This is a bad idea because jail is worse than death. It is worse because you are just dead and no punishment but jail is worse because you are just sitting there on the bed doing nothing every day.

I am for it because it is not right for someone to take someones life from them and I am against it because it is not right for the government to take the someones life from them.I think that should be in prison for 12years and if they kill someone again they should be in prison for the rest of their life

I believe that they should have a second chance like fool me once shame on you fool me twice shame on me. I was hit by a car and my parents wanted to sue her but relized it was not there choice and asked me but I said give here a second chance even though I could of died.also I am against this idea.also it doesnt do anything for the dead person.

    September 23, 2011 at 4:37 pm |
  155. Kyra

I am with the death penalty and at the same time I am against the Idea. I believe that it might be more of a punishment if the criminal spends his/her life in jail. If you think that you have proof of someone murdering someone else and later find out that they are innocent what are you going to do? You can't bring someone back from the dead.
I do believe that depending on your record that you deserve a second chance, even if you are under house arrest . if you murder someone else then you could use the death penalty on them. I also believe that if you could convince anyone and if you had enough proof that the person was guilty then you could use the death penalty.
I do agree that the death penalty is a good solution to make sure that they do not do it again but they might think that it is the easy way out because in a couple of minutes they will be dead and they won't know anything about it.

    September 23, 2011 at 4:38 pm |
  156. Ashlee

I am against the death penalty because some people need a second chance and if you can't prove that that person did a crime they should not have to die. But if they did a bad enough crime than I think that they should be put in prison for life because it is almost a second change by letting them live and they would get to think about what they did instead of house payments, buying food and other stuff. So they get to think about why they are in there in the first place. What I am trying to say is that everyone should get a second chance or if they blow there second chance then they should go to prison for life. That is why I am against the death penalty.

    September 23, 2011 at 4:39 pm |
  157. Dylan

I believe that the death penalty is not right to do because when someone killed a person you do not just go and kill them I think you should put them in jail for the rest of there live or something besides kill them.also I do not think they deserve to just die because they did something bad and you should just give them a second chance.

    September 23, 2011 at 4:39 pm |
  158. Anthony

It depends on the person whether or not they should receive the death penalty. For example, some who didn't mean to anyone at all shouldn't die for because of a accident. Though, if they did mean to kill a person, than they should be sentenced to a death penalty.

    September 23, 2011 at 4:40 pm |
  159. Marisela

I don't agree with the death penalty all the time like when the person is not guilty and they don't have a lot of proof for example, the person might just be a suspect but they don't have finger prints on a murder weapon. On the other hand they might have done a terrible crime like killing a lot of people.

I don't agree with Andrew, if someone kills another person for no reason I think that should be killed on the spot.Hamarabi's Code an eye for an eye.

  164. Tatiana

I believe that Capital Punishment should be encouraged. Criminals aren't going to change after being in prison for two years or so, they'll probably murder more people. The justice system will keep it under control and they have the authority to kill humans who have committed crimes. So yes, I believe Capital Punishment is a good idea and should be encouraged.

    September 23, 2011 at 4:46 pm |
  165. Casey

I think it is unnecessary to have a death penalty. What if you were a judge and you sent someone to their execution and then some evidence is uncovered proving their innocence?

    September 23, 2011 at 4:47 pm |
  166. Kayla

I don't think it should be allowed. It doesn't matter what they did, death is the easy way out if they were truly guilty. They get to stop thinking about it, but the victim or the victim's family still has to think about it so how does that solve anything? If it was really bad then life in prison gives them plenty of time to think about it all. If they weren't then you're killing an innocent man. The man they killed on Wednesday, that wasn't right. If you can't give me hard proof then you have to reason to kill him. Even if you could, it won't bring back anyone and it doesn't solve anything. Killing people because they killed someone doesn't right a wrong. Who gives any human the right to decide who lives and dies...

Capital Punishment is good and also can be bad. If you aren't completely sure that the man or woman did the crime, than it shouldn't be allowed. If you are certain, only then, should you be able to Prosecute them.

I think it should be legal in all states. I believe a tooth for a tooth, it also depends on what kind of crime they committed too.

I believe its wrong mostly cause all christians would be against it in the bible it says "thou shall not kill" and Capital Punishment is killing people which is breaking that commandment.

I do not agree with the death penalty I think it is wrong in lots of ways. No one deserves to lose there life, and a life sentence in jail is a lot bigger punishment than the death penalty of no living.

Capital punishment can be a good thing. It serves justice to those who committed serious crimes. However, there is always some chance, however small, that the person sentenced to death row is innocent. Just like people have been put in jail for crimes they did not commit, there could have been people who were killed for a crime they did not commit. In my opinion, capital punishment should only be used in cases where the jury is more than 100% sure that the suspect committed the crime. There needs to be strong evidence, to make sure that the death penalty is not used unnecessarily. If there is any doubt in a trial or case, the accused should only be sentenced to life in jail.

    September 23, 2011 at 4:49 pm |
  174. Hannah

I think Capital Punishment is wrong. Even if the person did something wrong they shouldn't be killed for it. What if the person who they found guilty, was actually not guilty? They'd be killing an innocent person, and that's not right.

    September 23, 2011 at 4:50 pm |
  175. Nikki

Capital justice is a good way to distribute justice, but only if they jury are absolutely positive that person committed the crime and all of the evidence is substantial . I also think it would have to be used for murder trials or repeat offenders. But I also believe that if the person were on trial for murder the family of the victim should choose what happens to the person who is on trial.

This is a really popular topic. I believe that it should be take a life give a life. And its not just murder, some crimes deserve the death penalty as well.

I say it's wrong. 2 reasons: one, killing someone is wrong, and 2 wrongs don't make a right. And two, punishment is supposed to make someone learn their lesson- how are they supposed to do so if they're dead?

if you are going to commit a crime you should have to do a sentence. a minor crime is small and a major crime should revive the death sentience.

I think taking the life of a person is wrong but i dont think that they should be aloud to kill the killer, they should just put them in a prison for life they will end up dying in their instead of having to do that and make others mad about that they can go in their and what ever happens in their happens then it wouldnt be the governments fault.

I believe in the death penalty but only when there is 100% proof and evidence that the person being convicted is guilty. Otherwise it is unjust. In the case of Troy Davis, there is not 100% proof, the man plead not guilty the whole case, it is unfair and unjust to put a man who may be innocent to death. So, i believe in the death penalty, but not in cases like Troy Davis where there just isn't enough proof.

I think that the Capital Punishment is perfectly fine in certain cases like murder and other crimes associated with murder. I think that the punishment should not be carried out untill proven completely guilty. If there are changes in stories repeatedly then I beleive the person is still innocent until proven guilty. In in the end, some person took a life and needs to face the consequences bye losing their own life.

I don't think peoples life should be taken because that is like making crime themselves. If they would be punished it would be some thing els beside death. Every one deserves to live. I don't think anyone wants to be ordered a death sentence because one day that might be you. Its just a punishment for the killer its not like the other killers are gonna care. We shouldn't hurt our kind

I believe that taking someone's life is a bad crime that a person can commmit but killing the murderer isnt going to solve our problems and i also think its so harsh just giving another person's life away even though he commmited to the crime. I also think its unfair unless the murderer doesnt regret it but if he does, than he deserves a second chance.

What if right after they get out of prison they go and kill someone? Or commit whatever crime that got them in prison in the first place? They have to accept their punishment. Maybe instead of excecuting them they could just give them a life sentence. I don't think community service will do it, to be honest with you. People need to be responsible for their actions. All we can do is pray for them and hope they change their ways.

I believe that capital punishment can be a good/bad thing, its a good thing because there are many people who deserve that sort of punishment, and bad because to some people sitting in a prison cell for the rest of their lives may be a worse punishment than death. I feel that letting them deal with their guilt or remorse would be a better punishment than killing them if the emotion was there.

I think that execution is wrong because everyone has the right to live (it is also written in the constitution). I think that the government has gone too far as to execute a man with NO EVIDENCE of him being guilty. The least they (the united states) can do is put people who are convicted of felony in prison for life.

    September 23, 2011 at 5:06 pm |

I think that the Capital Punishment is not a good thing because if the people really didn't do the crime that they are being charged for than the Capital Punishment law is just putting innocent people to death.

i dont think they should have a say in their punishment. i don't think we should consider what they want and would rather. i think we should give them a life sentence of something like that. but not community service. that would not change a muderer.

Capital Punishment should be illegal all over America. Even the ten commandments God gave to Moses many years ago said that you shall not punish or murder someone else. Troy Davis might've been guilty, but he could've been innocent because they had no proof of his murder he commited years ago. I just can't believe they have a law like that. How shameful.

The death penalty should only be served to people who deserve it. It is hard to tell on some cases but I believe it is fair but can be unfair. If you take a life, you give your life. It's only fair.

Capatial Punishment is a cruel and unusual punishment. No matter what the person did they should at least get a second chance. The death penelty should not be used in any case because to me its the same thing as murder.

    September 23, 2011 at 5:41 pm |
  212. Kailynn

I agree and disagree with capitol punishment. In most cases I believe it is not neccessary. It is a very controversial topic, but I think as a generalization, it is not needed. Sitting in jail for many, many years will hurt them more, rather than relieving them of their pain by killing them. To me, killing someone because they killed another person doesn't seem like justice. There's a saying that many of you might know, "Two wrongs doesn't make a right." The Judicial branch of the government should listen to this quote and follow it. We should not kill others because they murdered another human. Sitting in jail for the rest of their life; having to live with the weight on their chest knowing they did such an inhumane, horrible thing is punishment enough.

Even though what all of the convicted people did was unforgivable, that still shouldn't mean that government can take away there lives. The government didn't give s our lives, so what makes them think they have the right to take them away? In my opinion, letting them sit in a jail cell would work just fine where they wouldn't hurt anyone anyway.

    September 23, 2011 at 5:46 pm |
  215. Antonio

I belive that there are more ways to solve crimes than death penelties. Although capital punishments might make people re-think their actions before they actually do them the effectivety of this support is lost in most cases. Many killings are done either emotionally or planned beforehand, both situations this 'beforehand thinking law' don't effect. I belive their should be more fundamental solutions for this matter. If someone killed somebody, find out why and try to stop further incidents. Do not just kill everyone who committed murder. If no fundamental solution is given, this fallacious kill-and-kill cycle will continue infinitely.

    September 23, 2011 at 5:59 pm |
  216. Isabella

I don't believe in a life for a life, but in some cases, capital punishment is necessary. I believe that in order for the government/courts to hand down this sentence, the accused must have a fair trial, and there must be decisive evidence against that person.

    September 23, 2011 at 6:02 pm |
  217. Emma

No, I don't myself believe in capital punishment and strongly oppose of it. Capital punishment is just plain and simply wrong. It is also very inhumane to kill someone with an electric chair or even in a shot. The court should not decide if someone should die or not . What if the judge decides you are guilty and they kill you? 3 years later the judge can't say "sorry" you are innocent it will have been too late. God should decide if you are able to die or live.(it even says that in the Bible) The judge shouldn't even have that possibility. People should be able to have a second chance to start over...

    September 23, 2011 at 6:05 pm |
  218. Anna

Capital Punishment is an unnecessary process. Personally, I feel guilty that out our country thinks it's OK to kill people. Just because they have made "bad" decisions, dose not mean that they should be killed. America is better than that, we are a democracy, we are a modern, productive society, we are respected. Capital punishment is NOT alright!

    September 23, 2011 at 6:08 pm |
  219. Audrey

I've read lots of comments here and I see that most people are strongly against capital punishment. I think I'd be one of the few to say that I think capital punishment is okay. What if your husband, wife, child, or any other family member was killed? I think that you wouldn't exactly be best friends with the murderer. However, I do think that capital punishment should be a last resort. If someone is possibly innocent, they should not kill them. Capital punishment should only be done when they are absolutely sure that this person is dangerous, and cannot even function in jail.

Capital punishment is an unfortunate necessary in our society. People commit atrocities and if they stay in prisons, they are taking up government taxes that could be spent on helping people. When a hate crime happens to this magnitude, they must not be allowed to continue in society.

I disagree with capital punishment. We, as citizens of the United states, do not the right to decide whether someone should die or not especially when we don't have hard evidence. I believe we should make capital punishment illegal. What's next, are they going to kill us for shop lifting, hitting, or even be a bully? We cannot let this slide or are rights will be taken away.

Many people converse over this, though an answer may never be reached. I think that it is not needed because of prison and other things that we can do. It even causes more pain for the criminal's family, who may have done nothing bad in their lives. It also depends on your religion, if you have a different religion than most or if your country has a specific one, then you (naturally) have different views. For these reasons, I think that something should be done about it. After all, we are a country of peace.

    September 23, 2011 at 7:28 pm |

In a modern society we might think it is okay to kill for certain acts that go against the law, but is it fair? We live our life in fear that one day we could be killed. It is human nature to want revenge, but even that could destroy our way of living. I believe capital punishment is morally wrong and should not be used in America. We should not use death as a punishment.

I believe that God is the only one who may decide who shall and shall not die, therefore I do not believe in capital punishment. The old saying is an eye for an eye, and that is true to a degree.I think capital punishment is just and fair and that first degree murder should be treated like they say, fair and square. I think that Capital Punishment is a good way to take care of people that have done something terribly wrong like if they serverly hurt or kill another person. Life in prison won't do any thing. Plus people can escape from prison. If we keep people like that in prison they can hurt their cell mates too. Capital Punishment should only apply to people that deserve it.

    September 23, 2011 at 9:11 pm |
  236. Anne

Cappital punishment is fair and in no way wrong. Even in the bible the three circumstances in which it is right to kill are war, defence, and punishment.

    September 23, 2011 at 9:12 pm |
  237. Kennadi

I strongly oppose Capital Punishment. It's not a fair process. Everyone deserves a chance to live, even if they did do something bad. I don't believe others, not even the Supreme Court, have a right to choose if someone should die or not. Instead, people should be given another chance at life instead of having it taken away all together. It's also a risky process, especially if someone did not actually commit the crime. Capital Punishment is an unnecessary form of punishment. After all, aren't people who execute the punishment, also committing a form of "murder"?

    September 23, 2011 at 9:15 pm |
  238. Lucas

Personally, I feel that capital punishment should only be used on people who have committed very serious crimes. Also, people who have committed serious crimes in death penalty states should not receive the death penalty if they admit that they committed the crime.

I think that if someone is convicted of murder, they deserve to be sentenced to a death penalty. We do not need to waste tax money that could be used towards other more useful purposes, on a criminal in prison. Also, if we release the convicted murderer back into society, giving them their "second chance", we risk giving them a "second chance" to harm someone else.

Capital Punishment is basically telling people, "it's not OK to kill others, so we're going to kill this person to teach them a lesson." Instead of killing them, put them in jail for life and/or a shorter time. At first, I was all up for that idea, but them some classmates shared the other side, and I realized just how horrible it was.

I disagree with capital punishment. I believe it is inhumane I do not think that it makes much sense it's like a legal murder because of a murder. Also with the advances in forensics many death row inmates have been exonerated. It doesn't make much sense to me.

Sometimes, punishment is not only effective to teach convicts but also to warn others. Imagining that there are no capital punishment at all, people are easily to kill others and acceptance for several years in prison, the society would be disorder afterwards. Young generation should be teached by witnessing a serious price for crime instead of the forgiveness which might leave room for crime growth.

It depends on the trial. If there in concrete evidence then the death penalty could be enforce making good. But if there is little evidence and the death penalty is enforced, then capital punishment is bad.

Capital punishment is something needs to be done responsibly. Yes I believe that if someone is killed that the Person who did it should be punished in such manner, but however you need enough evidence and proof to do it. In this case the court did not have enough proof. I believe that you need to have a lot of evidence because it would not be fair if you did not have enough evidence but you killed that person anyways and then you found out a year later that the person was not guilty. So honestly make sure you have all the facts before you punish someone because once they are dead they wont come back.

I strongly oppose capital punishment. why? Because if someone murders and then is killed then we are criminals. He should be put in jail for many-life yrs. As Jesus said do not resist to an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. and as Ghandi said an Eye for an Eye make the whole world blind. The only one who can end a life is God, we should only put them in jail period.

I think that the death penatly is cruel. I think that they should just
sentence a life time in prision because no matter what they did, people don't need to be dead to learn thier lesson.

i think its wrong because what if they have the wrong person and thats not right. You shouldn't take soeones life because u think they did something i think that u should prove they did it.Troy Davis he was accused of something he probably didnt do.Just cause he had a criminal record people change. They learn from there mistakes.

I think that it is wrong to kill some one that killed a other person. God should only have the power to take life's from people not the court.

I feel that Capital Punishment is not ok. I feel this, because some people go to prison innocent, and get killed. Even though there are bad people in prison they shouldn't die, they should stay in prison for their whole life.

Capital punishment is utterly wrong, and is against the constitution and some religions!!! Even the Supreme Court said it was unconstitutional!!! Plus, what if the person was the wrong person, or was mentally unstable!?!?!? It is proven that the death penality costs more than to put a person in jail for life. When you add up the facts, IT IS COMPLETLY WRONG!!!!

Somebody who has murdered somebody deserves to be punished like that. We spend millions of dollars to give unrepentent criminals grace.

People should not kill other people, and we should not kill them for doing it. We need to fight agianst this, because it is wrong. Nobody should be killed for any reason.

I don't think that it was right to kill a man but I don't think that death punishment is always resonable because a man could be charged and he might not have even really done it

I would personally oppose to Capital Punishment-death penalty- because, especially in this case, the witnesses, though they changed their stories and reports, are opposing, and the government isn't listening, and there were no real video proof or photos of the guy murdering the the police officer. And also, the time until execution tends to be long, or at least, feels long, making it a time of torture for the person who is being the one accused or is guilty of murder. And even if they decide to do Capital Punishment, it would be better if they execute the person fast, ending their misery.

I absolutely disagree with the death penalty. Basically all Capital Punishment is telling people is, it's not okay to kill people. Okay, then why are you killing the guy who you think did it? Think about it. Does it really prove a point?

Capital Punishment, in my eyes, is an incredibly reasonable punishment that should be used for crimes that are so cruel or violent, that the option of death is brought up by the jury. 'An Eye for an Eye' may be an appropriate phrase to sum up the death penalty.

Capital punishment has been around...and is somewhat a cruel tradition. I think that keeping it around can help with the crime rates because some people who serve the crimes excpect to go straight to jail and hope to get out early for good behavior and keep living their lives like they did before. With capital punishment people can not just do illegal things and hope to keep living thier lives like it never happened. I say capital punishment is ok as long as its not over used.

I don't agree that the answer to a person's punishment is to be killed, they get their punishment to be taught a lesson, not be harmed themselves.

I've heard it said that capitol punishment is preventing world peace because i is a manslaughter and it makes us look bad. I think otherwise, because if we let these individuals who have killed others, we are not making the world a more peacefull place. We are acually taking away the peace of mind by "eliminating" these dangerous people. Although i dont agree with davis's capitol punishment because there wasn't enough evidence to support he was guilty.

My opinion is that people should not be killed for what they did wrong. It just makes it even worse that they killed that certain person. Some that is not good for our country. Its like you kill him i kill you. That would make you just as bad as the criminal.

Well I think that this can be fair and unfair at the sametime. There are always different sides of a story. Maybe they should do one of the lie test to see if the person on trial is guilty in the first place. If I were to be in that position I rather die in prison/jail.

I think capitol punishment is a terrible way of punishing someone. Everyone should have the chance to change, even if they have a life sentence in prison.

  275. Hannah

I believe that it is necessary but can be unnecessary. I think that if people use their heads, and don't do things that require the death penalty, then it obviously wouldn't be needed. Unfortunatly people aren't perfect so I see the importance in the death penalty, but I don't like it.

I think that the Capital Punishment is fair because I wouldn't want to sit in jail with the same clothes have the same things to eat and drink. I'd just want to be executed and it costs money to keep those people in jail. As long as they did something really bad than it's ok.

    September 24, 2011 at 9:15 pm |
  277. Leela

I personally believe that punishing someone by death is not a fitting punishment because they will never learn their lessons. They will still have the mind-set that killing people is ok.

I don't believe in capital punishment. We should be able to die naturally because that's the way God intended it. And I believe everyone deserves a second chance because nothing is to big that God can't forgive us. Yes I believe in a life sentence but not a death sentence. Do we really want to sink down to a level where we destroy a person's life. I believe capital punishment makes us murderers.

I don't think the death penalty is right because if you kill someone then1- 10 years later you find the person who actually did the crime then you just killed an innocent person

  280. Maddie

Capital Punishment can be a good thing for those who want justice. However, it can also be a bad thing, everyone on the planet should have a chance to live their life, but in some cases that's not the case. However, by giving them a "second chance" at living their life, could mean putting more people at risk by sending that person out into the world again. You shouldn't just kill someone if you don't have all the proof to that case.

  281. kimberly

Capital Punishment is basically telling people, " it's not OK to kill others, so we're going to kill this person to teach them a lesson." Instead of killing them, put them in jail for life and/or a shorter time.At first,I was all up for that idea, but them some classmates shared the other side, and I realized just how horrible it was.

i believe that capital punishment is wrong how does killing someone who killed another person make it better.theres a chance that the person being executed is innocent.no matter how bad a person is do they really deserve to die.i think that capital punishment is barbaric.

There are a lot of pro's and con's about Capital Punishment. If we were to abuse, neglect, and kill the innocent then where would we be? On the other side, it's really good to get rid of the people who have done cruel things. I certainly don't want a murderer walking down my street.

I think capitol punishment is the right thing to do. I think its the right thing to do because it will tell everybody else to stop murdering people so less deaths will happen. So if they want to kill someone they should die because of it.

    September 25, 2011 at 11:11 am |
  290. Lucas

I think it is ok if they are proven guilty after years of trial to make sure it is the right person. I also think that if it is a bad enough murder they should be executed right away. I think that if we do the execution there won't be as much murders because if they know if they get caught they would be executed so they won't do it.

    September 25, 2011 at 11:24 am |
  291. Creighton

I think capital punishment is okay sometimes. There has been alot of times where the person they killed turned out to be innocent. If they are 100% sure this is the person and they did a horrible crime i think its ok. If not then i think they shouldnt be aloud.

    September 25, 2011 at 11:30 am |
  292. Tim

I am against capital punishment because if the court were to kill someone who commited murder than they are no better than the murderer. Also if the court system were to find evidence that the person in question was actual innocent and they already kill them then they just punishment someone who didn't deserve it.

I disagree with capital punishment. No one deserves to die. No matter what they did, and what happened. Sometimes they don't even have proof of who commited the crime.

I disagree with capitol punishment. I think this way because no one deserves to be killed. If they murder someone why murder them back? I think they should of just placed him in jail.

Capital punishment is wrong to me. I mean everybody makes mistakes, and you don't have to kill them for those mistakes. And yes people may be very upset because of what he or she did but in the long run you would feel better with he or she in jail not dead.

I think capital punishment is not illegal so if the same people don't think twice about what they did they won't get a second chance or thought because they shouldn't have done it in the first place.

I think capital punishment should only be a consequence if they have solid evidence that the crime has been committed by that person. It also depends on how serious the crime is. Death is a serious thing and I think it deserves a second look before it’s done.

    September 25, 2011 at 12:44 pm |
  301. E

I think capital punishment is a good thing because if the person dosen't decide to think twice they won't have a second chance to do it again.

Well, about the Capital Punishment it could be good only if its a serious crime, but if its just like hitting someone hard, but not killing I really don't think its necassary to be doing it. Because your killing someone and thats a crime. (murder) and its not necassary to be killing or hurting people! I don't think its good and not good like its kinda in between.

    September 25, 2011 at 1:13 pm |
  303. Laura

I think the death penalty is both a good and bad idea. It is good because it provides immediate punishment for the people who commit a crime. They committed a crime and I think they should pay for it. However, it is a quick way out for them. If they are entitled to a lifetime in prison, they suffer for the rest of their life. They are stuck in a jail cell with usually bad tasting food. They hardly ever get to see their friends and family. I think that sounds like a worse punishment then suffering for about 2 minutes. Capital punishment serves justice right away, but it doesn’t really teach them a lesson. They don’t have to worry about doing the right thing after being sentenced. I think we should do away with capital punishment and instead sentence them to a lifetime in prison.

    September 25, 2011 at 1:58 pm |
  304. Aaron

I think Capital Punishment should not be kept in our country. In some cases there are innocent people...who are put on Death Row for a crime that they were wrongly convicted for. And then they are put to death. But, on the other hand there are people who have committed serious crimes. They deserve punishment, but no one, and i mean no one no matter how serious the crime, deserves to be killed. The criminals should suffer with a life sentence in prison having to live with all of the remorse and feeling they have about their crime for the rest of their life. And what happens if we do inject them with the lethal chemicals, doesn't that just make us as bad as the criminal them self, I say we get rid of Capital Punishment
