Taxing Mileage?

If you had to choose...
On every gallon of gas you buy, 18.4 cents go to the government. The money helps keep our highways in shape, and part of it also goes to mass transit.

Well, cars are getting better gas mileage, so the government is taking in less money from the federal gas tax. So some lawmakers are batting around the idea of taxing Americans on how many miles they drive - either instead of, or in addition to - the gas that we buy.

The pros and cons are covered on Friday's show, and after you hear them, we'd like to hear your two cents' worth!

I've never thought about taxing mileage.
That'll surely help drivers to drive less, anyway.
    But that seems strange.
I live in Korea, and in Korea, taxing mileage may be possible, with all those bus systems and everything, but I heard that a large sum of Americans must drive to get anywhere.
And taxing milleage wil make them to pay more, and citizens will get astonished and angry. Well, goverment will get some more taxes, but what about the drivers, paying high-taxes?
I think taxing gasoline would be better.

Well in my opinion that would be a bad idea. My first thought is how would you be able to track how many miles you drive. It would very hard to enforce. Plus I live farther away from my actually town. So if my family had to go get groceries, we would have to pay more than someone who lives one fourth of a mile away from the grocery store. So all in all I think it's a bad idea.

I think that that we shouldn't be punished to be driving a number of miles. The gas costs are expensive enough.

i think they should not raise the taxes up on gas because not many people will buy the gas.from Beverton middle school.

The whole reason for the engineers job is to create better engines for cars companies. So there doing there job, it's the governments job to make the money

The whole point of an engineers job is to create good fuel efficient engines. There doing there job. It's the government's job to make money. It's not the normal humans fault to spend $1.3 trillion.

I Think Taxing people for how many miles they drive is crazy! I think it is crazy gas is already 4$ a gallon some people barely have a enough money to pay that, imagine people paying for taxing of the miles. It is a horrible idea!

i think that it is a bad idea because if it costs $3.50 for gas and 18.4 cents of that goes to the government ...they should lower the taxes!!!!!!!!!!!!

By paying mileage, we pay more to the governement to travel around. Seeing how one gallon can be 20-30 miles of road travel, that's a whole load of cash for the government. Americans do not need this tax placed on them.

Why make us give more money for gasoline if its already a big problem on tax!? Its mileage they should be worried about, gasoline is just one big excuse for tax.

I don't think they should do that because that would make a lot of families get mad and probably start a protest.

It is wrong to tax on mileage because like carl said people in rural areas will have to pay higher taxes because they are farther from everything. My grandpa lives in a rural area, and he has to drive miles and miles to get groceries and other necessities.

I think we should tax on the gas we use for our car. The reason i think that is because i think we should be awarded for having a very fuel efficient car instead of being taxed for going green. To me being taxed on mileage is just plane stupid

I think it unfair for people that got out to buy a car that well use less gas so that they save some money then the government turn around and starts taxing then on there miles and then there back to paying the same thing if not more

  17. Maia

I would tax on mileage, it's hard to tax on gas because prices vary so much all the time. I also think that taxing on mileage would make people drive less which is good for the environment.

  18. reyna

I think instead of taxing on things that we actually need everyday they need to start taking on things we don't want in the world anymore but people still do like drugs and alcohol so that way we can try to get people to quit while still raising money for the government.

    May 19, 2011 at 10:33 pm |

It will be a bad thing to tax on mileage because you have to hire more people and we would have to pay more taxes.

I think this would be a good idea. so the goverment would get more money to get better roads and schools. we should have more jobs with this coming.

I dont think the people should be taxed on gas or maleage, gas and tax prices are high enough. i think the gas componies should pay the taxes that are needed. the government need to stop taxing the people for everything, were barely hanging on how it is now.

I dont think the people should be taxed on gas or mileage at all. Gas and tax prices are high enough. i think the gas componies should pay the taxes that are needed. the government need to stop taxing the people for everything, were barely hanging on how it is now.

I think that they should just tax us on the gasoline because our country does not believe in taxing us for the amount of miles that we drive.

    May 19, 2011 at 11:39 pm |
  24. Ashlee

There should be a little bit of tax on both. If there is to much tax in one place, people would get angry, but if there is a little bit in both places, people may not notice as much.

  25. Pazazzz

I cant say! Sense the gas is rising they wont tax how many miles we drive. But the prices will have to stay at the price it is or get higher. But I has cause so much chaous!! But if you tax how many miles we drive, the gas might go down alittle. But that would mean less money so harder to keep are highways in shape! ❤

My opinion is that is better by paying gas because some cars are economic and waste less gas. What the government wants is to pay the fee of 14,000,000,000 that they owe to other countries but they want to do that with gas but that is like people getting riped off.

    May 20, 2011 at 1:00 am |
  27. Dan

I don't think that the government should add yet another tax on to something as critical as driving, however, considering the current financial situation of the country, it my be necessary so that we can continue to have drivable roads. People may not want to pay more, but roads are not cheap.

    May 20, 2011 at 1:01 am |
  28. Arturo

I think its bad because the govenment is trying to charge money to people whos cars are hybrid

A lot of times, lawmakers say "This will help the country bring in more money." But the truth is, it that this probably won't. People that have a choice would just start riding with friends, or taking a public bus. I think that in the future, if this passes, buses may be overwhelmed.

I think that the government should tax on to the gasoline, because I live in the country and our car gets good mileage. Some people have to drive miles and miles to get to their work and more people are switching to more fuel efficient cars. If they taxed on miage, the government would more. I know we are in debt, but if people don't have enough money to get to work or go places, the economy will fall apart!

    May 20, 2011 at 7:30 am |
  31. Bob

It doesn't matter to me if I have to pay taxes on gas or taxes on milage because they have equal pros and cons to me. For example, my family drives everywhere, but our car can not hold much gas in its tank.

    May 20, 2011 at 8:14 am |
  32. Aaron

I think that putting a tax on mileage is the gov. trying to make money on citizens that drive 20 miles a day. When I heard this I thought that the gov. had been watching specfic people and then over time decided that they would make money off of people who drive tons of miles a day and/or week.

    May 20, 2011 at 8:40 am |
  33. Cassie

It's unfair to tax citizens on mileage, we are already spending over four dollars on gas. Even if we tax mileage instead of gas it will still be unfair for those people who have to drive far to go work.
Ride a bike, skate, walk, ...unless we get taxed on those too!

    May 20, 2011 at 8:46 am |
  34. Hunter

I think that we should just stick with the taxing on gas. Anything else simply makes it more complicated.

    May 20, 2011 at 9:12 am |
  35. Madison

I do not think that it is fair to tax people on the milage they drive. Think of the people who commute an hour to go to work and the miles they rack up in one week. It is just another way that the governement is trying to screw us over. I hope that this never happens because I would be broke! I drive everywhere, all the time and my car doesnt get that good of gas milage. Just because cars are getting better gas milage doesn't mean that we have to be taxed on that too.

    May 20, 2011 at 9:19 am |
  36. Nick

It's a terrible idea because every car that gets good gas mileage would become obsolete.

    May 20, 2011 at 9:36 am |
  37. Owen

It would actually help the environment to put the tax on gasoline because you would have to pay more for gas so less would be bought, therefore less would have to be pumped.

    May 20, 2011 at 9:37 am |
  38. Brandon

I think would be more expensive if you tax the mileage because certain people who have to commute a farther distance which means more mileage. This wouldn't be fair.

    May 20, 2011 at 9:39 am |
  39. Quincy

I think that it would be bad for the economy to charge by mileage because less people would be able to purchase gas. If you charge by how much gas they get, it would be cheaper to the public.

    May 20, 2011 at 9:41 am |
  40. Ben.

With gas prices at an all time high in USA, it would be more cost worthy to tax mileage

    May 20, 2011 at 9:41 am |
  41. Sylvia

If the government taxes mileage less people would be able to travel so it would effect the economy and tourism.

    May 20, 2011 at 9:42 am |
  42. Noah

Well, I personally believe that taxing on mileage would be worse because those people who do have the electric cars although they have the luxury of not paying for gas they would have to pay for the mileage.

    May 20, 2011 at 9:43 am |
  43. Nicole

Charging by the mileage wouldn't be fair and it would violate personal property, like if the government can get to your mileage it makes you think about everything else they might be able to know about you.

    May 20, 2011 at 9:45 am |
  44. Dylan

I think that it would be bad to charge on mileage, just think about the buses as they travel to school. Many of them have multiple routes, their mileage would be up, which would affect the population because we pay the taxes to public school systems.

    May 20, 2011 at 9:47 am |
  45. Grace

I think taxing Mileage is a bad idea because it's using more of the people's money, and if that happens, no one will want to drive much anymore. That will cause the taxing Mileage income to go down. Basically, it's the domino effect for everyone.

    May 20, 2011 at 9:59 am |
  46. Morgan

I think we should have tax on gasoline because some poeple have to drive further for work than others if they live in the country. Taxing on milage would not be fair.

    May 20, 2011 at 10:04 am |
  47. Julie

I think that think that they should not tax on mileage because it may be to expensive for people who dont have jobs, and people who dont have jobs may be frostrated with how much they payy. What we pay is already to much.....

    May 20, 2011 at 10:06 am |
  48. Tommie

Taxing on mileage is not right though man really. How the people is going to drive a car if the Government is taxing mileage of how many mileages are people driving. Now people is going to walk, take the bus, take a taxi, etc... What else is the Government is going to do now taxes people on house or something. I just don't know dude but it is just wrong to do.

My mom has to drive about 60 minutes to go to her work and drives during work, so I dont feel that the tax on milage is kinda stupid.

  50. Francis

I think the gas prices should go down. I think that because the prices keep going up and some people do not have enough money to pay for it!

    May 20, 2011 at 10:29 am |
  51. Paul

I think if the gas prices are so high they should not tax how much cars
drive.I think that because every other day people lose their homes

    May 20, 2011 at 10:32 am |
  52. selena

I think that it is unfair to tax americans on how much they drive. Some families have to share a car. They drive many more miles than a family with less people. Plus if you have to drive to a different town for your work, it puts a major strain on your wallet. The government should not tax people on their miles because every family would be taxed different amounts and it is unfair for those who have to drive constantly.

  53. Mrs. Moore's Class

If you tax on mileage, there's no point in getting fuel efficient cars.

I think that their shouldn't be taxed on mileage.Their shouldn't because we are already being taxed on the gasoline.

    May 20, 2011 at 10:38 am |
  55. c

I think the tax should go on gasoline because people drive more miles than they buy gallons of gas. that's what I think.

    May 20, 2011 at 10:39 am |
  56. Allison

I think we should be taxed on gasonline, not mileage. I understand that the government is not making as much money as before but it is not fair to the citizens who buy the gasoline. People work hard for their money and if you have to commute for work, taxes on gas mileage would cost them more. Better cars with better gas mileage was a great idea and it saves people a lot of money. I do not think people should be taxed because they were smart enough to come up with a car that has good gas mileage.

    May 20, 2011 at 10:40 am |
  57. Kira

I think that it's unfair to tax people based on how many miles they drive. Some people have to drive a long way to go to work, and I don't think it would be right to make them pay the government just to drive to their job.

    May 20, 2011 at 10:40 am |
  58. Robyn

Well I pesonaly think that the government shouldn't tax drivers for how many miles they drive. Thats just ridiculous . If they did that people wouldn't go on car trips and you would see more an more people walking everywhere they go. I know that would be healthier for America but It would also make some people loose their businesses because so much money is going twards how much they drive they could loose so much money over it that they cant afford most of the things they can now. I think that the government should just lower the gas prices so they really dont loose buissness.

    May 20, 2011 at 10:40 am |
  59. Jonathan

I think in my personal opinion, it is unfare to tax people on something the government has nothing to do with. Some people drive more than others and it is hard already with gas prices at $4 a gallon, now they are trying to make use pay for how many miles they drive? It just isnt right to the average, hard working american.

    May 20, 2011 at 10:41 am |
  60. Jason

I think we should just pay for our gas because some Americans have jobs that require them to drive a lot. If they had to pay for how many miles as well or instead of gas prices, that could very well bankrupt them. Taxes are already very high, so we do not need a tax on mileage as well. I hope that mileage is not taxed and gas prices can go down as well.

    May 20, 2011 at 10:43 am |
  61. Hanna

I think we shouldn't be taxed on mileage, because car producers are making cars that don't need to be filled up as much, so we save money. Also, on the plus side saving money could help the government. So all in all it would be better not to tax on gas mileage.

    May 20, 2011 at 10:45 am |
  62. christopher

i thing taxing mileage would be a bad idea because that mean you be paying more money for gas, when it is all readly $4.00 a gallon.

    May 20, 2011 at 10:46 am |
  63. Austin

i think it is not cool that people are not getting as much gas for the amount of money that u are paying for. I think that alot of people are going to nongas cars for they do not have to pay as much to be able to drive around and get u from A to B. I think that they should not tax on gas mileage.

    May 20, 2011 at 10:47 am |
  64. Raeann

i think it's a good way to give money to the goverment because if we didn't then we wouldn't have roads and highways and travelways to get to the places we need to get to. We should be grateful that we even have cars to get around in and travel wherever we want to go. We would need ways to get there and back. We also have good transportation but we couldn't go anywhere without gas. It's very understandable that half of the money goes to all government agencies and all the other important people involved.

    May 20, 2011 at 10:48 am |
  65. adriana

I think that tax should be on the gas price. I think that because there are cars with better gas mileage than others. The cars with better gas mileage were made to make driving around easier and cheaper. If the government makes taxes based on milage then people wont drive as much. The result of that is that the government would get more money for gas prices because people will pay for gas still.

    May 20, 2011 at 10:49 am |
  66. Stephen

I think taxing mileage is a bad idea. Why would tax someone who just want to go see its family?
Taxing on mileage is just like taxing people just for driving.
Gas is high enough as it is, just leave the tax on mileage away.

    May 20, 2011 at 10:49 am |
  67. Maria

I think it is good that half of the money goes to our highways but if the money didnt go to our highways they would be messed up. What I mean by that is our highways would only have one or two roads to drive back and forth and get to places. It is also good that the exta money goes to the mass transit beacaise a lot of people use those kinds of things like taxis and the subways. The govenment is doing the right choice of sending 18.4 of the money is going to the roads and stuff. The roads and water ways are making our state a beautiful place.

    May 20, 2011 at 10:51 am |
  68. Awn

It should be more tax on gasoline because mileage that you drive does not afect anything. I also think it should be gas because mileage doesn't effect anything why charge mileage?

    May 20, 2011 at 10:53 am |
  69. brex

If you spend money on mileage every time you drive a mile ,you have to pay 20$ every mile but if you choose gasoline you have to pay 18.4$.

    May 20, 2011 at 10:54 am |
  70. Kyle

I would pick gasoline because if you payed tax and mileage you would have to pay a lot sometimes because some places could be far from your home and you would have to drive a lot and the more you drive the more you pay so you could lose more money and you have to drive to places to get food and shelter. If you payed tax on gas it would be less money because you don't get gas as much as you drive so you would pay less money and you would be able keep more money that you need.

    May 20, 2011 at 10:56 am |
  71. Mazir

I think it should be gasoline because we travel 50 miles a day and that would be like 150 dollars. Also because people travel alot.

    May 20, 2011 at 10:58 am |
  72. Ashlyn

I think they should charge more money on the gas mileage because people are started to get mad at the gas price. People are starting to get new new cars with better gas mileage. Also you can go further on better gas mileage so then you wouldn't have to pay as much. I usualy go on vacations in the summer so it would be hard to go if the gas prices keep rising. Overall I think they shouln't tax on the gas price.

    May 20, 2011 at 10:58 am |
  73. olivia & Elizabeth

We think that we should pay for gas instead of mileage because for mileage some people drive more distance then others and that is one reason why we say its better to pay for gas.A other way that we should pay for gas instead is because some people are from other places and it takes more time for them on the rode so they will have to pay more than a person who lives near the area. The last way that they should pay or gas then how they pay for mileage is because everyones life is different.

    May 20, 2011 at 11:00 am |
  74. Maria

I think that money that goes to build highways is a good thing. At least it doesn't go to waste.

    May 20, 2011 at 11:00 am |
  75. Joseph

I think there should be tax on gas because if someone had 100,000 miles on his or her car then the tax would be 500 dollars.

    May 20, 2011 at 11:01 am |
  76. tina and gwyn

Its's not fair that people keep driving and they keep highering the amount of money of mileage. And it doesn't make sence because they alredy highered the amount of gasoline so why would they do mileage.

    May 20, 2011 at 11:02 am |
  77. Jyler and Tude

I think the milage tax is dumb because it's not fair for the driver because if the driver lives in a rural area the driver will have to drive which means pay more money and that's not fair.

    May 20, 2011 at 11:02 am |
  78. Matt, Brian

We think it is better for tax on gasoline because you can save money and you get better savings.

    May 20, 2011 at 11:04 am |
  79. sula

I think paying money for how far you drive is an awful idea. Not only would people not want the government to know how far they drive, but most people would to have to pay WAY more tax then they have to for gas. When I get to drive I don't want to over pay.

    May 20, 2011 at 11:06 am |
  80. Adric

IT is not fair because everyone has to go far away to work and visit And people have to wast money thats not fair to people what if there moving far away.

    May 20, 2011 at 11:09 am |
  81. Genna

I honestly think this is unfair because the gas you have to pay for is to expensive for most pepole. The more efficent cars need gas though. The pepole that have to drive even more to get to there have to pay more money.

    May 20, 2011 at 11:20 am |
  82. Brandon

I believe that this is not a good idea because what will end up happening is that it will most likely decrease the amount of people who will take road trips, and decrease tourism in many places that you have to drive long distances because people don't want to pay the extra fees.

    May 20, 2011 at 11:23 am |
  83. Dani

I think it would be very unfair to tax drivers on their mileage. It would be unfair because if you have a longer commute to work you would have to pay more. It could also be bad for the economy because people wouldn't drive as much.

    May 20, 2011 at 11:32 am |
  84. grey

Well i think that the tax is wrong. Take the people that have more mileage they may get taxed more then the people that have less mileage. I think the tax on gas is better becaus the govenment is getting more money from the people that buy gas. Then with the new cars coming out it is cosing less and less for you car. So the tax on gas would be better off keeping because some people want to stay with gas powered cars and some people want to go to the new electric cars. So it makes you think why charg people for the mileage they have on the car they have.

    May 20, 2011 at 11:32 am |
  85. michael

what i think of this is pretty dumb lots of roads are not evan taken care of as good as they say they are taking care of them. its like a cycal as people buy cars the mest up roads an pot holes mest up cars as the cars mess up the roads so as i see it, it is a very evan balaced deal there should be no tax on people who drive the most ,for driving to work to make money they would now have to spend money on gas to drive to work an money just to drive.

    May 20, 2011 at 11:33 am |
  86. spencer

the tax on gasolen is ok. but i think it should be lowerd about 8 cents. if the gov. taxes mileage it would be bad. i think that most convents stores will close their pups because more and more people will start riding other things like bikes. if the gov. dose tax maileage that would be very bad for the economy, stalks will most likely fall for convent stores and for auto delerships. that would be total caos. some small car derlerships might even shut down. the price of food would sky rocket. so i think the tax on mileage is a very bad idea!

  87. Bethany

I think that they should not tax on mileage. They should just keep taxing on the gas. But then they should make the gas money down . Because we have always been tax and pay on the gas like all the years. And the company is rich as it is. And some people don't have that much money for gas.

    May 20, 2011 at 11:37 am |
  88. Ashley

I think it's a bad idea because more the people go on the road there putting to much money on gas.It helps the gas stations. But people are loosing to much money on gas cause the gas cost is going up 5 percent once a week mostly. Also people need to spend money on clothes & food and bills. The gas prices are costing to much now. But also when people get gas it helps for the road getting them in better shape.

    May 20, 2011 at 11:37 am |
  89. Lesley

I think americans should not have to pay taxes on how many miles they drive. We already pay alot for gas. Some people dont have that kind of money. Parents have to take there kids to day care and school. They also have to have to drive to work, stores, and drive to go pay bills. Some people are already have money problems so no they should not pay extra.

    May 20, 2011 at 11:40 am |
  90. Devin

I say that gas cost enough money. They need to lower the price before they can tax us for it. If they do start taxing on gas then we would see a decreace in how many people drive. One good thing is if they do start taxing us on gas poeple might start getting electric cars and thet would help are enviernment

    May 20, 2011 at 11:42 am |
  91. Michael

I think that gas already costs enough. And i also think that the government has no right to give less money to the federal gas tax just so we can pay gas for how many miles we drive. If we had to pay money for all of our miles half the people in the united states and the world would go broke and then people would not be able to pay rent for their houses and nobody would be able to buy food to feed their famalies

    May 20, 2011 at 11:43 am |
  92. marissa

we don't need no highways we have plenty. the government should leave the highways alone. they should not build anymore highways so we don't kill anymore animals. when we build road or highways we put more plutents in the air. we need to stick to dirt roads.

    May 20, 2011 at 11:45 am |
  93. leslie

the highways dont need any fixing. we dont need anymore highways. if u do not want to pay the goverment u can ride bikes or walk to work every day .if we make more highways we can distroy the homes of animals. we can also kill animals.

    May 20, 2011 at 11:49 am |
  94. Javier

You already pay to much for gas now for mileage. That does not sound fair. I would rather walk

    May 20, 2011 at 12:02 pm |
  95. Tina

i think that the U.S. should have taxes on milage instead of paying for gas because then we can have more gas. Also since we are getting better car mileage then, if we do have to pay for the mileage then we don't have to pay as much.

    May 20, 2011 at 12:05 pm |
  96. nick

i think this is dumb becau se some of the drivers who have poor milage on there cars well have to pay both of the taxes. plus since our goverment messed up and went in debt they are just finding new ways to make up the money they lost.

    May 20, 2011 at 12:07 pm |
  97. Anthony

I think that this will hurt the people in rural areas seeing that they have to drive for a long time to get out to the city. So it would be a bad idea to do.

    May 20, 2011 at 12:20 pm |
  98. Zuan

Driving tax? Are you kidding me? Gases prices were is too much to deal with, now they want to add more to the situation? I'm glad I take the bus to school.

    May 20, 2011 at 12:22 pm |
  99. alexis

I think that tax on gasoline is better because if your taxing gas it is taxed once but if your taxing miles its taxed every single mile you go.

    May 20, 2011 at 12:24 pm |
  100. Phillip

Taxing mileage it like taxing T.V. and I don't that american should tax how much we travel day in and day out.

    May 20, 2011 at 12:26 pm |
  101. Rochel

I think its a bad idea to add tax on gas. This will just make it so that more people won't wanna go anywhere. Also that it will be way to expensive to go anywhere. This is an out of control issue that is becoming a national issue. People can't do what they want because it costs way to much.

    May 20, 2011 at 12:29 pm |
  102. Kylee

I think taxing people on gas is pointless. They tax our parents already.. I think the government is just being very greedy. They find a way to tax everything in the U.S. It is flat out greedy. Taxing people on their gas mileage is downright low. Gas prices have gone up majorly within the past three months and we'll be facing a new crisis. Perhaps another Great Depression. Lawmakers need to think of the fate of America rather than the condition of pointless things and budget their spending.

    May 20, 2011 at 12:33 pm |
  103. Nick

I think its a bad idea for the government to take 18.4 cents from the gas stations. The money for the gas mileage should just stay in the gas stations profit. The miles that people drive should count because they shouldn't have to have to pay a lot for gas. People shoulnt have to get all that gas if the government is going to take. Some people wont have the freedom as much as they used to like last summer.

    May 20, 2011 at 12:35 pm |
  104. Jake

I don't like the tax because it goes to the government. Our gas prices are rising higher and higher. My dad is getting mad. It makes our country more nice. But i still hate it.

    May 20, 2011 at 12:35 pm |
  105. Karlee

i think that taxing gas is kinda wrong but it does help our government build new roads and taking care of the enviorment. I think they need to lower taxes cause my mommie cant afford it because she drives alot. Taxing on gas mileage is not the smartes thing that they could of done but people got to make their money. I

    May 20, 2011 at 12:35 pm |
  106. Jeff

Well i dont really like this, im going to be driving school but im in no rush do to the gas prices. At this point ill rather ride a bike to were i need to go then drive a car.

    May 20, 2011 at 12:35 pm |
  107. Kraiger

If i had i had a choice between taxing gasoline or taxing mileage, i would have to pick gasoline so i dont gotta pay as much at the pump. I really think it is really stupid about thinking about taxing people for every place they go. The government is trying to take over or lives so we need to have a right to fight for this. We need to join forces with other contries and come up qwith a way to lower prices on crude oil so the government wont have to tax us at the pump instead they will already have it.

    May 20, 2011 at 12:36 pm |
  108. Kimberly

I think it's good that they are improving cars with better gas milage. Because that way people don't have to buy or go to the gas station much an they can go places without stopping. And also taxing the economy is getting worse with our dept. Taxes hurt people because there having taxes on things that dont need to be taxed or taxed to much on.

    May 20, 2011 at 12:37 pm |
  109. Travis

I think that we shouldnt tax people on the mileage because some people have to travel around for sports or school events like quizbowl or anything else like that. For my family they wouldnt like it because we have to travel around the state sometimes. We are losing money because of all of the gas prices and if you tax us on mileage we would be in debt even more than we already are. I gues if they do tax mileage people would ride more bikes or walk.

    May 20, 2011 at 12:37 pm |
  110. Mark

I think that the government is taking this taxing to far. They are already taxing us to by the gas why would they take it to far by taxing milage. If they want to tax us on milage do it for a good reason. I dont think they have the right to do that. If we buy the gas and we by the car we should have tax free milage. They should atleast put money into this before they tax us.

    May 20, 2011 at 12:38 pm |
  111. Brooklyn

i think they should lower the prices on the gas because some of us people cant afford that much gas.Taxing gas is wrong but It also helps our government so it good and also bad. When I start driving I don't want to be paying a gallon cause thats just dumb.I think its good that newer cars are getting better gas milege.I might have to get a car that is like that cause paying for gas will empty my wallet.

    May 20, 2011 at 12:39 pm |
  112. Rosie

If i were to chose between tax on gasoline or on mileage i would choose gasoline. I chose that cause why would you even put tax on mileage. How much mileage your car takes dont mean nothing. The government is taxing everything that everyone does now and that is not fair to the poeple no more. Why is the government doing this to punish the people or what?

    May 20, 2011 at 12:39 pm |
  113. Karl

i think that taxing gas is kinda wrong but it does help our government build new roads and taking care of the enviorment. I think they need to lower taxes cause my mommie cant afford it because she drives alot. Taxing on gas mileage is not the smartes thing that they could of done but people got to make their money. I personally do not want to pay 5 bucks for a gallon of gas. Thanks for destroying the enviorment!

    May 20, 2011 at 12:40 pm |
  114. russell

Taxing milage is better than taxing gasoline because it is better than taxing on gas.Because less people would be on the road and save the money on gas.Or tax something rather than gas because my family cant afford the gas.Because if you drive 1000 miles than then you have to pay 1000 dollars.Or just tax the rich and make it less for the poor.

    May 20, 2011 at 12:41 pm |
  115. Jake

The prices on gas are good for our country. Our taxes go to keeping our country in good condition. The government is raising them because they need more money than their getting. The gas prices won't stop rising until the governments debt goes down.

    May 20, 2011 at 12:41 pm |
  116. Emylee

If they were taxing us for the miles we drive, because what if some people have a long distance drive to work that would not be fair to them. They would have a double whammy, because they would have to buy gas, plus they would have to pay for their miles. Also how would they plan to find out how many miles we have driven? I somewhat understand why they would tax our miles, because the government needs money to function as it's supposed to.

    May 20, 2011 at 12:43 pm |
  117. Makayla

I dont think people should not tax us on mileage because what if we have to travel for sports, and other activities. If you want to travel but not have to pay for your mileage then that could efect some things. If you add the taxing on the miles people drive then that will just raise the price.

    May 20, 2011 at 12:43 pm |
  118. Jeff

this is dumb. people r going to go broke if gas prices keep going up. why cant they just lower gas prises to were they were 20 years ago. no one was complaining how high it was back then and every one is camplaining. now there trying to get more money out iof you trying to taxt youon your gas milage. everyones going to go broke

    May 20, 2011 at 12:43 pm |
  119. Cristal

I personaly think that a lot of people are struggling with the gas prices and dont know whether they should start finding some cheaper transportation to either school, work, or any other places. I dont agree with some of the lawmakers who are planning to tax people for how many miles they drive,I really dont see how that could be possible. Its seems to me that this government isnt helping us at all.

    May 20, 2011 at 12:51 pm |
  120. jessica

it's not fair to people who go far away to tax on milage. bills can be bad enough.

    May 20, 2011 at 1:11 pm |
  121. Alston

I think that idea is unfair to the drivers because they can be charged by miles instead of gallons which you would have to pay more for gas.

    May 20, 2011 at 1:17 pm |
  122. Jose

I think that the gas prices are too high and they are charging just for how much they drive. Also some people can't buy gas and they are making the people pay just for driving.

    May 20, 2011 at 1:21 pm |
  123. Warren

That is a very bad idea. I think the goverment is just trying to cheat people out of there hard earned money. Also I think people checking how many miles is a invasion of privacy.

    May 20, 2011 at 1:23 pm |
  124. Nick

i think this new tax is a bad idea because it is adding to the already expensive gas prices and then people are going to start rideing bike instead of using cars or find other means of transport becuase it will cost to much to drive your own car to work

    May 20, 2011 at 1:24 pm |
  125. Lucas

I think they should not charge money for how many miles you drive because some people drive more than others and that would be unfair.

    May 20, 2011 at 1:27 pm |
  126. Sam

I think that taxes should depend on how much money the person has. It shouldn't be the same for poor and rich people. I think for rich people the taxes should be higer, and for poor people the taxes should be hardly anything.

    May 20, 2011 at 1:30 pm |
  127. Jamie

I think they should not do it beacuse we already have enough highways to get from place to place. Insted of mass transit we can just use our own transportation. Or, they can make the milage cost 1 penny which would be a little odd though. Doing both would just be to much for the country. We would have to pay tax for somthing that doesn't matter that much.

    May 20, 2011 at 1:32 pm |
  128. Szilvia

I think people shouldn't be taxed on mileage because people already are paying a hole lot of taxes so, if people have to pay tax on mileage they have to pay more on gas.

    May 20, 2011 at 1:33 pm |
  129. cece

I think that is a great idea, though, it should'nt cost much. maybe, like, no more than... 20 cents per mile. or maybe for free!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    May 20, 2011 at 1:33 pm |
  130. Morgan

People should deffenetly not have to pay taxes on mileage, like if someone drove to Maine paying mileage on that would be way more expensive then just paying the tax we already have. Diffrent people could live like five miles from the grocery store and have enough gas to get there , but if you had to pay by mileage you would have to pay even if you did have the gas.

    May 20, 2011 at 1:34 pm |
  131. Katelyn

I think the government should go by mileage because is already to expensive

    May 20, 2011 at 1:38 pm |
  132. Mr. Lee's SS Class

It violates your privacy and it would double tax Americans. With rising oil and gas prices citizens don't need additional money coming out of their pockets.

    May 20, 2011 at 1:39 pm |
  133. Amanda

I think taxing people based on mileage is worse than taxing gasonline because there are many people who drive very far every day. Personally, my mom drives 120 miles a day. It's going to cost more money for her because of how far away her work is. Taxing gasoline is the way to go.

    May 20, 2011 at 1:42 pm |
  134. Samantha

I'm from a small town in Indiana, and my mom works an hour away in Indianapolis. It would be frustrating for her to have to pay extra when it comes to taxes because of the fact that she works far away. I disagree with the purposal of taxing mileage, and I believe it woud only cause frustration in the hearts of busy drivers!

    May 20, 2011 at 1:45 pm |
  135. Elise

I disagree because the people that pay so much money for a fuel-efficient car don't get as much of a reward if they are still being taxed on their mileage. People who work in a different city will also be affected because they will get charged for every mile they drive to work, they will be charged.

    May 20, 2011 at 1:45 pm |
  136. Mackenzie

Not all people in the US own fuel-efficient cars, so taxing gas mileage would be a loss for them. They already have to pay for the tax on gas anyway, so the people would have to pay taxes anyway. Some individuals also travel in cars more than others like my family does for all of me and my sister's sporting events.

    May 20, 2011 at 1:46 pm |
  137. Brady

This is just stupid. My friend lives in the country and they struggle already, why should they struggle more?

    May 20, 2011 at 1:47 pm |
  138. Zane

I think that the idea is rediculous and that the government needs to spend it's money on more efficiant things. The United States of America has been in a war in Iraq for several years and we have spent trillions using government money. When the government raises taxes I think that people will decide to walk or ride bikes places rather than drive because it will be cheaper. When that happens I think that it will cause the gas market to fail as well as bring our economy down. Over all

    May 20, 2011 at 1:50 pm |
  139. Charlotte

I think that it is a bad idea. I am one of those people who live in a rural area. My parents have to drive me an hour to get to school. We already have enough trouble getting our recsources, this would not help us any.

    May 20, 2011 at 1:51 pm |
  140. Taylor

I think its a bad idea because people who have to drive along ways to get to work will have to pay for driving to work. Most companys will not want to pay for that and the paychecks you get from working will go directly to paying your driving taxes for when you drive to work.

    May 20, 2011 at 1:53 pm |
  141. Hazel

I just got my liscense this year. I have a good job for a teenager but getting there can be troubling. If there was tax on how many miles you drive I would definetly have to consider quitting my job. For some people the miles they drive and what they make would be the same, so you would not get anything out of working.

    May 20, 2011 at 1:54 pm |
  142. Taylor

Most people wont be able to do school sports because a lot of people dont live near there school they have to drive farther to pick there kids up from sports. a lot of people already are having trouble with money and if they start taxing i know i will not be able to do sports and what about school buses will the schools be charged for that? its a bad idea

    May 20, 2011 at 1:56 pm |
  143. Aleena

I think its a good idea it will help pay for road fixings. Like i live in Minnesota and we are having a lot of bridges redone here because one of our bridges collapsed and it killed a lot of people so tons of bridges are being redone so i bet a lot of the tax money would go to that.

    May 20, 2011 at 1:57 pm |
  144. Charles

I think taxing on how many miles you drive is a good idea. It would be a good way to help our government. The money helps keep our highways in good condition. Also it could eliminate sitting in traffic if we had better highways.

    May 20, 2011 at 1:58 pm |
  145. Gregory

For most of us kids we let our parents worry about that kind of stuff. But as we continue to get older it could have a large impact on how we shape our lives. For children it is something to consider. Also where we go to college or the careers we choose.

    May 20, 2011 at 2:04 pm |
  146. Kennedy

I believe that mileage should not be taxed. It's already taxed on the gasoline put into cars, and people already are feeling robbed. For the people who live out in the boondocks, like me, taxing mileage would be even harder on the family's budget.

    May 20, 2011 at 2:15 pm |
  147. Mitchell

If the point of buying a hybrid or fuel efficient car is to save money, then doesn't this defeat the purpose of buying them?

    May 20, 2011 at 2:25 pm |
  148. tyler

i think it is really stupid to charge on millage. I think it would be wrong to know how much people drive. I think that if they tried to tax me on my millage because i dont want people knowing how much i drive.

    May 20, 2011 at 2:30 pm |
  149. jessica

I don't think that people should get taxed on how far they go when driving. Some people have to drive really far to get to places. Also some people don't have enough money to pay for a car and pay for tax that you get for driving to far.

    May 20, 2011 at 2:31 pm |
  150. andrea

i don't think people should be taxed on gas or mileage at all gas and taxes prices are high enough now think the gas componies should pay the taxes that are needed .the gov need to stop taxes .

    May 20, 2011 at 2:33 pm |
  151. Travis

I think the government shouldnt tax us on how may miles we drive we. Its are car and we can do anything we want to our cars. Also people should have te right to drive anytime

    May 20, 2011 at 2:34 pm |
  152. Feather

A tax on mileage doesn't make sense. How do you collect the data without invading peoples privacy. Rural people would be hit harder.

    May 20, 2011 at 2:37 pm |
  153. Erin/Dakota

The government thinks that being taxed on mileage is better than being taxed on gallons. We don't agree with having to pay a fee for miles. We disagree because we think that the adminstration doesn't need to know how many miles we drive a day. Some people have to drive really far to get to work or school. We think that being taxed on gallons is the right idea because that way we don't have to pay that much money everytime we fill our gas tanks. Most people disagree with being taxed on mileage because it's a psycotic idea. Some cars have better milage than other, but most cars don't have very good milage, so cars that drive long distances and don't have good mileage should't be taxed on miles. Overall, the government shouldn' t tax by miles we drive.

    May 20, 2011 at 2:42 pm |
  154. Hailey

The goverment wants Americans to pay more taxes on gasoline. I belive that the goverment shouldn't tax us on milage because we spend enough money as it is on gas every month. With all of the driving we do, having taxes on mileage would be hriffying, and howwould it help in this recession? What if, for example, a family had to drive to school, then to work, then to back to school, then finally home? That would be 50-60 miles depending on how far the their job is from the school. We shouldn't have to pay for mileage it's just too much!

    May 20, 2011 at 2:44 pm |
  155. Chase and Yannick

Many people these days are having conversations on how gas prises are sky rocketing, and the government is thinking about raising it even higher. We strongly belive that we should not have to pay more for tax mileage because we already spend enough money on daily expenses, paying the mortgage, and and for our groceries. We hear that our taxes go to fixing roadways, but since the roads are fine the way they are,why should we spend more money on it? We also think that we should not be taxed on both mileage and gallons. Why make us pay more of our money on something that doesn't need fixing, it just doesn't make sense. Overall we still stand firm on not having to pay more tax milage.

    May 20, 2011 at 2:46 pm |
  156. Ken

This idea of taxes is rediculous . If the government needs money then they should stop helping Lybia so they can save a ton of money. A ton of people travel a lot for work and if the business doesnt pay for the trip, then they would have to pay alot more money. If the government passes this law many people will do something about it. The government needs to find many more ideas to raise money.

    May 20, 2011 at 2:49 pm |
  157. lucia

I think people should not have taxes.

    May 20, 2011 at 2:50 pm |
  158. Brenden

I don't thin thats very fair. Or reasonable. Some people have to drive all over the state, or country even. I don't think 18.4 cents needs to go the government. Maybe just like 10 cents, because the highway doesn't need much work in our town!

    May 20, 2011 at 2:50 pm |
  159. Mason

I feel that we should be taxed on the amount of gas, instead of how far we go. I'm going to Montana for three weeks and my parents will be driving a lot of miles. I feel that we should be taxed on feul we buy because it is a substance. The miles we drive is basically a number. I don't like the idea the country will be losing money becuase of the finacial and economic crisis we are in.

    May 20, 2011 at 2:51 pm |
  160. Keagan

Well in my opinion, this is a bad idea. My first thought is how would you know how many miles a person drives to tax them. Then there's the thought of how people who live in the outskirts of their city would have to pay more. I live in the outskirts of my town. So if my parents needed to get groceries, they would have to pay more than a person who lives down the street, but is to lazy to walk. So all in all I think this is a bad idea for a way of taxing.

    May 20, 2011 at 2:52 pm |
  161. Hadley

Since gas prices are controlled by OPAC, taxing mileage could give Americans an advantage. It would be equal to all people because everyone would pay the same for going the same distance. And it would benifit those who only drive in city. But to tax both the gas and the mileage, would be unfair to the people.
It would prove that our government is really only concerned with their own success.

    May 20, 2011 at 2:52 pm |
  162. Ella

I find that silly, especially the fact we are all ready struggling with paying for gas. If we tax people on how many miles they drive, that could lead to less family trips, causing National Park income coming down. Personally, my family is already trying to cut back on traveling, the taxing would make it just that much harder. Our family's can't afford to be taxed, due to mileage.

    May 20, 2011 at 2:53 pm |
  163. Rashel

I belive taxing mileage is an idea worth trying. If we are not getting enough from taxing gas then we need to do something. We should, however, only tax mileage instead of both mileage and gas. To do this would be unfair to lots of people. Also we might get more supporters if we only do tax mileage.

Lately. some government officials have been planning a new tax on car mileage in addition to already taxing per gallon. However, we are in complete disagreement. As you might already know, the US is in a serious recession and we literally can't afford to give anymore money that we don't have; by persuing this idea, all citizens will be upset and our country will be in the dumps! If the government is careless enough to pass a law making American people pay mileage taxes, they obviously haven't taken all the people who have active lives into consideration. Adults drive hours to jobs, hours to sports, and students to school; making people pay for these parts of life isn't fair. Also, the field trip that could have been the time of your life would end up cancelled because most schools wouldn't be able to pay for the taxes due, therefore stopping the education of children (which could have been prevented).
The smallest pieces of life are the most amazing and they shouldn't be taken away from inocent people. If the government still finds the need to pass this law, lives will be crushed.

The goverment should not put tax on gas! It is already TO EXPENSIVE!! It is defiantly to expensive for when teenagers start driving! They don't have the money yet to buy $5 a gallon gas. I don't think it is fare. That is my input.

    May 20, 2011 at 2:55 pm |
  166. Joe

I kinda agree with this. I agree beacause it is helpfull with our roads . I also think the government shouldn't get some of the money because who knows what they could do with the money . They could probably spend it on like something that we are already stocked up on . So they shouldn't get a whole lot. I think they should only get like 7 cents.

    May 20, 2011 at 2:56 pm |
  167. Frank

I don't think it is ok for the goverment to tax people. some people drive every day like to work, or other cities. If some people lose there money a lot they might become homeless. Some people might lose there jobs. They might not buy food and die. that is why the goverment shouldn't tax people.

I think that if the Gov. makes tax on the amount of miles you drive it will drive people insane. I know a friend whose dad lives out in the county, but works a job in the city as a policeman. He would have to cut a lot of money to things he likes to do. I think that if the Gov. needs money they should cut spending.

I don't think the government should tax people on gas mileage, becaue it would change from person to person. Depending on the circumstances, one person who makes three times more than another, could pay three times less. If the government taxed us on the gas prices, it would be a steady income for the government. Therefore, a win-win situation for both us and the government.

Many people are talking about taxes on gas for gallons, mileage, or even both. We strongly belive the American public shouldn't get taxed at all. We already pay for gas so why we pay more. This will create more problems for people paying for everyday expenses because they'll have less money. The American public shouldnt be forced to pay money for better roads when people can donate, we dont want to be controlled by our govrnment and therefore do no not want to be taxed.

for a while, the government have being charging a tax on the ammount of gas in gallons. as if that's not bad ehough, law-makers are now thinking that the government can get away witha tax on wath's on your cars odmeter. We strougly believe that taxing mileage impedes the American people's rights as citizens and is a horrid idea in all areas. We know that the federal government needs money for taxes, but what most Americans don't thinkabout is the long run. Hybrids may take away from the initial income, but they reduce the amount of smog polluting our country, therefore improving the quality of our crops and increasing the overall economy for the US. This country was founded upon the fact that the American people don't like being over taxed. Who says that the american sprit has changed since 1776? History might just repeat itself. If people charged taxes on how far poeple went the entire west would be forever different. People don't need the government to know about how far they're going and that, along with the aforementioned ideas, is why tax on milage should not evn be considered.

The government has just recently told us that they want to tax Americans on car mileage. I belive that the government should not tax us on mileage because we drive several miles every day, just by going to school, then to work, then back to school, then home. How will taxing mileage help the people who drive constantly, or live in rural areas? Just doing a few errands would be about 26 miles, and who knows how much even that short of a distance could cost? No one should have to pay money for doing everyday things! I still strongly belive that having tax on mileage has no point whatsoever.

i think that they should not tax people on mileage instead of gasoline. i think they should tax people on gas. it will help better and stop protests.

    May 20, 2011 at 3:14 pm |
  174. Matthew

I think this is ridiculus. Drivers should be able to drive as far as they want to without being taxed. With gas, you pay about $40-50 for a full tank, and depending what car you have, it can get you a long way. With taxing mileage, you would have to pay more just to go to the store or something. Plus, if gas was free, we would be taxed even more so the goverment could pay for the gas. Overall, it's a bad idea.

    May 20, 2011 at 3:22 pm |

It's not fair! I feel like they are going to make us pay taxes on everything.

    May 20, 2011 at 3:28 pm |
  176. Shamus

I think this is ridiculous. The sole purpose of getting a hybrid car is to save money on gas. Pretty soon we will be getting taxed for taking our bikes to work or even walking to work.

    May 20, 2011 at 3:28 pm |
  177. Morgan

I think its stupid that they want to tax you on the miles you drive. If they are going to tax anything it should be the gas itself. Some people drive a lot but have good gas milage so it doesn't cost as much for them. So if they HAVE to tax something it should be the gas.

    May 20, 2011 at 3:43 pm |
  178. Anonymous

I think that the money that we spend goes to a good cause and keeps our highways in good shape, but it is also is costing us more money just to go places. Also it is rising the prices of our goods and makes it harder to get things from the store, when you don't have the money to but what we need to get through these hard times.

    May 20, 2011 at 3:44 pm |
  179. Luke

I think that this is completely unfair. One reason why we buy fuel-efficient cars is to save money on gas. Also, if the government starts taxing us on our milage instead of gas, people might start buying cheaper, less fuel-efficient cars that are bad to the environment.

    May 20, 2011 at 3:44 pm |
  180. Tegan

I think that they shouldnt be able to tax gasoline because that is unfair because gas is already at a ver VERY high price right now even though there are more gas efficent cars today not everyone can afford to buy a brand new gas efficent car in todays economy and then adding on taxing to the gas prices would just make things even more diffucult for the middle and lower class working families

    May 20, 2011 at 3:44 pm |
  181. Taylor

I don't think that we should be taxed on the amount of miles that we drive. If someone had to drive 90 miles to see their parents that are dieing or something, and they are getting charged extra for that, that's kind of out there. I do think that being taxed makes sense, but not on the amount of miles you're driving. Maybe if it was a differnt cause such as teenagers and young adults cruising, but not on the regular amount of miles.

    May 20, 2011 at 3:44 pm |
  182. Sara

I don't think this is fair because what if you lived in a farming state where you drive all over the farmland to harvest your crops you would have some serious money to pay for.

    May 20, 2011 at 3:45 pm |
  183. Haylee

I think it is not good because of all the money it is already costing us at the pump.So we should not be taxed even more because people will go broke then people wont drive then the government wont be making any money. It could be good as well because it could help the government and we could get major improvements on road and highways.

    May 20, 2011 at 3:46 pm |
  184. Ty

I think that this idea is realy bad. As the new cars get better gas milage people won't have to fill up their car as frequently. Then hopefuly less gas will be used. I think that they shuold leave the price of gas and all of that alone. They should not tax drivers on every mile per gallon they do. It is just stupid they should realy leave it at where it is now.

    May 20, 2011 at 3:48 pm |
  185. lesli

i would rather my parents pay money for the gas then for the milage because my parents go on alot of trips. so if they taxed by millage it would cost my parents more money witch means for me less clothses

    May 20, 2011 at 3:49 pm |
  186. Bobby

I think that without the taxing we wouldnt have anybody to protect are streets and our country. So I think that is important to have taxes. However, I think that it is bad because it is costing our family more money. I also, think it is good because it keeps are streets nice so that we can drive on them ,and it makes it easier for us to drive.

    May 20, 2011 at 3:50 pm |
  187. joseph

I think that they sould not tax milage.People can drive many miles on a gallon of gas.The tax on gas is bad enough. If they need money maybe they should cut down on the amount we spend to help other countries. For example, the money we spent to help Libya.Im not saying we shouldnt help just that we shouldnt help as much.

    May 20, 2011 at 3:50 pm |
  188. Jade

I think that it is a bad idea to tax people on the mileage...because then we would be taxed for gas and for how many miles we drive... and if your like me and have to drive 30 miles to get to town, then that could be a big draw back.

    May 20, 2011 at 3:51 pm |
  189. Cassie

i think this is good and bad. its good because it will be cheaper for some people. its bad because some people drive on a lot of trips like my family. so for the people who drive a lot it will be more expensive for them.

    May 20, 2011 at 3:51 pm |
  190. Gabriella

I think it is a good idea because we do need to keep our highways in shape....but also bad because of the taxes. The taxes may get to be so high that some people may not be able to pay for them. That is why the government probably should not tax for gas mileage.

i think if they tax americans it would help the government but not very many american people. So in my opinion if they want to help the government they should do somthing helpful for the government but at the same time helpful for the american people for everyone to be okay with the disission.

    May 20, 2011 at 3:59 pm |
  192. Alli & Tori

The government is changing taxes that are currently on gasoline. We beleive that it would be a bad idea to have tax on mileage, because we think that could weaken our ecconomy. Transportation is important especially puplic transportation. However, if gas is taxed, then transportation would be more limited and posibly cost more money. Many schools take trips to places out of the city and they get there by bus. If there is tax on mileage the school may not be able to afford that and that could cause a negative impact. Gas prices are already very high so asking people to pay more taxes would be very complicated and many people might struggle. Overall, we disagree with the govrnment and strongly beleive that there should be no tax on car mileage, and that gas prices should be lowered.

    May 20, 2011 at 4:02 pm |
  193. Matt

With all new cars that sounds like a great idea. Although maybe it would be better to give rural citizens deductibles and city citizens more taxes because of how far they drive

  194. raghav

If you tax on mileage it will force many people to walk or ride bikes and help the Earth.

    May 20, 2011 at 4:55 pm |
  195. Jackson

I think that the tax should be on gasoline. When you think about it there are tons of people who would suffer if the tax were on mileage. These are people like truck drivers and traveling salesmen who travel hundreds of miles each day.

    May 20, 2011 at 5:08 pm |
  196. Maddy

I think we should be taxed on the gasoline cars use. Some people drive more than others and it wouldn't be fair to charge them by mileage. While others drive only to work and back and to the store a few times, others drive from work, to the store, and have children they need to drive to sports practice, instrument practice, friends houses, etc. They can't help that their children have to go to so many places. Taxing them by miles rather than gallons would raise their bills, decline the money they have to spend, and possibly put them in dept.

    May 20, 2011 at 5:32 pm |
  197. Connor

i think that taxing on mileage is not a good idea because my family travels alot and we already pay a ton for gas alone. We don't need taxes for how far you drive.

I do not like this idea i mean people are already paying a lot for gas and to put mileage taxes on top of that is insane. Even if it was separate then it would coast the same.

I think that is wrong for them to do that and it is not fair for people who live far away from there job or who live out in the country to have to pay that much money to just go pick something up at the store.

    May 20, 2011 at 7:05 pm |
  203. Matt

I think this is a bad idea. this country gets taxed for so much in this country we shouldnt tax driving. its not fair to everybody including us teens who will be getting our licenses soon.

  204. Sarah

I don't think it's fair to tax people on milage. Some people have to drive extreamly far to just get to work. It would be cheaper to just pay on gas and not milage. My family drives 4,000 miles per summer. Imagine how much it would cost if we had to pay tax on milage too!

    May 20, 2011 at 7:19 pm |
  205. Taryn

I think this is seriously wrong because there are privacy issues involved. Plus this is extremely unfair to the citizens that live in one place and have to travel about 60-70 out. Its like weird.Like its bad enough that grown ups have to worry about regular taxes, now they probably have to worry about make another end meet. And that is not fair. Some peomileage taxes.People struggle enough, and now mileage taxes. That is one of the most ridiculous things or ideas I have heard.CRAZY

  206. Landen

I feel that since the government supports hybrids and fuel efficient cars , and a big reason people buy hybrids is to save money on gas. Then there would' be as big of a need to get hybrids or other fuel efficient cars.

    May 20, 2011 at 7:41 pm |
  207. josephine

it would make it more expensive to buy gas, and more people in smaller towns, like where i live, would resort to walking, biking or carpooling if it is a longer distsance. yet it would help our economy.

    May 20, 2011 at 7:52 pm |
  208. robert

it should be on gas because if on mileage that would be a pain for US drivers.Yes it would bring alote of money but if you put it on gas that would be good because gas prices are going up and if you tax gas USA get more money to buy more gas

    May 20, 2011 at 8:08 pm |
  209. Renee'

charge by the gallon because it's an invation of privacy. and if the government wants to charge by the mile then they will have to track you.

gas these day are getting higher and people these days travel longer if we'd charge people by the mileage we'd be spending even more then if we charged by gasoline

  211. gianluca

I think this is the worst idea ever because if we get taxed on mileage we would have to pay for gas and mileage and aren't we suffering already.

    May 20, 2011 at 8:18 pm |
  212. Allan

Taxing your mileage is totally wrong. I agree that it's a concern when it comes to privacy reasons, and while we're still in a deficit, it says nothing about going to the government, so i disagree with this

    May 20, 2011 at 8:29 pm |
  213. Logan

this is severely unfair people in North Dakota normally have to drive 20 minutes worth if not more to get to their job. If we did get charged based on mileage people in rural areas are going to be charged more

    May 20, 2011 at 8:37 pm |
  214. Tracy

I think mileage taxing if just wrong, but if it was between gasoline taxing and tax on mileage i would pick the gasoline since i would only go to the gas station like once a month.

    May 20, 2011 at 8:42 pm |
  215. Rachel

I think that tax on gasoline is a better idea. I live out in the country and my family has to drive pretty far to go shopping. When you live in city you can walk places, but in more rural places you have to drive. It would be hard for a lot of people. In the country it seems like most of the people here don't have cars with super good gas mileage, anyways. I don't want everyone to know how much I'm driving.

    May 20, 2011 at 8:45 pm |

The government should not be able to check your milage. what about the people that have to drive 100 miles a day.

    May 20, 2011 at 9:03 pm |
  217. Maureen

The government should tax on mileage because it could discourage the excessive use of gasoline-powered vehicles. It would probably help moderate the air pollution, too.

    May 20, 2011 at 9:13 pm |
  218. Benny

My family lives in a small, rural town. We need to drive to a larger town four times a week, so we needed to buy a fuel efficent car in order to save money. This law will greatly hurt the people who live in rural areas to an unfair degree.

    May 20, 2011 at 9:32 pm |
  219. Vivienne

I think that it is VERY unfair and a invasion of our privacy. Gas is already up, and we have to suffer enough. People travel miles a day. It would also hurt our economy on traveling. Think on how much it'd be damaged. Money for each mile is just not the right idea, and I think we should just stick with the routine we all follow out by now. Just think on all the people who would be angry if this idea actually passed.

    May 20, 2011 at 9:33 pm |
  220. Kelly

I don't think they should start taxing on mileage. I live in a small town and have to drive more and that wouldn't be right to charge a tax on mileage. Also, if they charge a tax on mileage, people will find a new way of transporting, and some people won't be able to pay for some of those ways.

    May 20, 2011 at 9:38 pm |

The only reason this law is being tossed around is because it would decrease incentives to buy fuel efficient cars. I guarantee that this is engineered by the desire to enrich oil industries, one of which recently dumped 4.9 million barrels of oil, and got out almost unscathed.

    May 20, 2011 at 9:41 pm |
  223. Ryann

It's a chain reaction: Taxing people by how many miles could lead up to people not driving as much. People not driving as much means less on gas. No tax on gas means trouble for government.

I think its a bad idea cause it makes people nervous about how much they drive and then they will drive less but spend less on gas money and make the economy worse

    May 20, 2011 at 10:37 pm |
  228. Lilly

I personally don't hate the idea, but i don't like it either. The reason why people bother to buy fuel efficient cars for more money is to save money in the long run. When they tax us by the mile, it's as if they're charging us for being fuel efficient. When you remove one factor from the equation, the rest of it just falls apart. Maybe in 10-20 years this won't be a bad idea. But certainly not now with this economy.

    May 20, 2011 at 10:39 pm |

I think its not fair that governers charge mileage. If they do the gasoline would cost more then it use to be. The gas price is enough.thats how I feel about the governers charging the mileages

    May 21, 2011 at 12:15 am |
  231. Alicia

Taxing mileage makes drivers to pay more taxes, and they will not certainly welcome it. (Of course, goverment would like it because they can raise more money.) Well, but it has some good sides: they will drive less to get less taxes, and air pollution could be reduced.

My family lives out in the counry, and I have 3 brothers who love to play sports... My dad takes me and my brother everywhere which means he is driving a lot so if the start taxing milage that would put people who live in more rural areas start paying more taxes than everybody else, I mean its not our fault that we love nature...

    May 21, 2011 at 12:55 am |
  233. Grace

It all comes back to privacy. It would be extremely hard for the government to track millions of cars across America and still get 100% accountability.

Also, with the high unemployment rate, people have been forced to take jobs far away from home. That mean more miles and more money for gas.

It would be much easier to tax by the gallon because of all the fuel efficient cars. If their plan was to decrease the spending of gas, why are we diverting from that plan? Also, it could clear up major smog in the air.

    May 21, 2011 at 2:53 am |

well, in my opinion, if tax on mileage instead of gasoline, the problem is that no matter which political department will calculates the mileage and any other stuffs, the sure thing is lots of time and resources will be wasted.
what`s more , taxing on mileage is no good for us to form and enhance our Environmentally Friendly minds.

I disagree with both is a good idea because gas prices are getting higher so adding tax per gallon would make the price rise. What if highways thought tax mileage was a good idea but they started rising tax prices? Everything should just go back to the way it is.

i don't think this is right. Drivers need their privacy and it won't be fair to others who have to drive a lot for their jobs. Why add more tax on top of gas prices which are still really high? Plus, isn't it better for people have to spend less on gas right now, and for cars to be more efficient and have more mileage?

    May 21, 2011 at 9:51 am |

I don't think that it is fair to tax people on milage because we already get taxed on almost everything and the people in rural areas that have to drive longer distsances will be taxed for just wanting to get home or somewhere.

I dont think that it is fair that people with jobs far away would have to pay more money. Some people would save money by not going to work. The unemployment rate would go up.

    May 21, 2011 at 10:19 am |
  244. cfms

our school believes that taxing millage would be the wrong thing to do. WE think this because people who buy fuel efficient cars wont get what they paid for.

    May 21, 2011 at 10:22 am |
  245. Bacteria

I don't think the lawmakers should tax you on how many miles you use, because there are people that have a long commute to work so they would get taxed on a lot then.

    May 21, 2011 at 10:24 am |
  246. Wanda

I think that it is a bad idea. The money we pay for every gallon of gas goes to help keep our highways clean. If the government tracks how many miles you drive, that is like knowing things about you, that i think is personal.

    May 21, 2011 at 10:27 am |
  247. Majia

The world we live in today is getting very smart. People are going to figure out how to take miles off their cars. We are getting intelligent about cars, but not with money.

    May 21, 2011 at 10:29 am |
  248. Hobart

I dont think that it is such a bad idea! The government needs money, and if nothing happens, the world will loose peace. The world needs peace, not war!

    May 21, 2011 at 10:31 am |
  249. Tibby

I think that this is not a good idea. People are already starting to give up driving because of the outrageous price of gas. Its just going to make it worse. We need to find other ways this is not the right way to do it.

    May 21, 2011 at 10:33 am |
  250. Sarah

No, i dont think it would be fair to the people who have to drive farther to go to work, than the people that only have to drive a smaller distance. Gas is expensive anyways. People wont want to have to pay for the amount they drive. The government doesn't need to know how far we drive.
Plus dont we pay enough money to the government anyways?

    May 21, 2011 at 10:53 am |
  251. Kayla

Taxing by the mileage is going to be a lot of money, besides gas is already high enough.

    May 21, 2011 at 11:22 am |
  252. Joshua

I believe that taxing the mileage on a car is an idea not worth using. I think it would be better to keep the taxes the way they are so we dont make any other people mad. It wouldn't be a good idea.

    May 21, 2011 at 11:36 am |
  253. Jade

I think it is a bad idea to tax people on how far they drive because if you live in a rual area, then it could be a huge drawback. And if you travel for your job. then that could also be a drawback as well.

    May 21, 2011 at 12:23 pm |
  254. Vivienne

I think it is a very big invasion of our privacy. It was toss up our economy, and peoples mood. Gasoline products are already up in money. Think of miles, that'd cost even more. Many people like to travel, and if they'd have to pay for each mile, nobody would want to travel. Which would hurt the economy. I don't think we need to pay even more tax then what we already pay.

    May 21, 2011 at 2:10 pm |
  255. Mort

My opinion of putting taxes on mileage is bad because that's not something to make the price higher it's just better with the regular price so people don't get frustrated.

    May 21, 2011 at 2:12 pm |
  256. Pip

the government taxes way to many things... i don't like the idea that they tax on gallon and now their going to tax on mileage too.

    May 21, 2011 at 2:36 pm |
  257. Ashley

I think they should keep it the way it is. It would make drivers in city and rural area have to pay more taxes...and in this economy, it would make it harder on people who can't afford it.

    May 21, 2011 at 3:50 pm |
  258. Laura

I think that this tax on mileage would be unfair to those who drive many miles for work everyday. Driving a lot of miles should be penalized, and having to pay for gas is already like a tax on how many miles you drive. I think that neither gas nor mileage should be taxed, especially with gas prices being high enough already.

    May 21, 2011 at 4:58 pm |
  259. Karissa

This is so outrageous! People who have long commutes or live in rural areasand have to drive more would be taken advantage of compared to people in big cities who drive a lot less.

    May 21, 2011 at 5:37 pm |
  260. Taylor

I think that we should not tax mileage! I think we should not because people who are almost always on the run will go broke or maybe even stop driving all together!

    May 21, 2011 at 6:17 pm |
  261. Lily

People have different distances to travel everyday... I don't like that the government would be monitoring how far we drive, and I also don't like that we work so hard to save money and buy cars that need less gas, and the government decides they aren't sucking enough money out of us, so they add more taxes.

    May 21, 2011 at 7:22 pm |
  262. Katie

I think it is a really stupid idea because not everyone can afford a new car and like the one they have, so if they charged people for mileage that would not be fair for others with older cars.

    May 21, 2011 at 7:38 pm |
  263. Brian

I think that taxing mileage is a mistake because people will drive 70 or 80 miles to work alone, plus your ride home, taxing gas is an efficient way to get the government money, taxing mileage is just completely unfair, especially for people who don't have jobs

    May 21, 2011 at 9:51 pm |
  264. Katherine

I believe that people should be taxed on gas, not mileage. For one thing, it would encourage people to buy Hybrids and other gas-saving cars. Also, seeing how far a person travels in a car is a voilation of privacy.

    May 21, 2011 at 9:56 pm |
  265. Justin

Taxing the mileage on cars shouldn't come into affect because many people can't afford their cars now. If (and I hope not) the government were to assign this idea than many people won't be caught on the road because of how scared they are to drive and that leads to less drivers paying for gas and many mechanics for their cars. Not a swell idea, will affect the economy worse than it is now.

    May 21, 2011 at 10:21 pm |
  266. Nina

I think they shouldn't do this because it wouldn't help U.S. because the economy is still bad and people would drive less.

    May 22, 2011 at 1:26 am |
  267. Ricky

I think this would be a great way to help the economy. If the government taxes miles driven they can make more public transportation systems. If it costs more to drive people will use the buses and trains while the government makes money off of them.

    May 22, 2011 at 1:32 am |
  268. Tanner

I think that that would be a bad idea. I live in a very rural area and it takes a lot longer to go to places. For example I live 22 miles from school and drove in a car not a bus.

    May 22, 2011 at 9:02 am |
  269. Katie

Putting taxes on milage is a terrible idea. Our family lives far away from us and since flying costs alot, driving is our only option and they live in Florida. And we do sports, and my mom is always driving us around. It would really hurt us in times like this to be taxed on mileage.

Just because people have rule efficient cars, it doesn't mean taxes on gas should go up or that they should tax mileage. People sometimes have to take jobs fa away but stay where they are so their family doesn't have to settle dOwn somewhere else and they shouldn't be taxed because of that.

    May 22, 2011 at 11:15 am |
  270. Darbi

I don't think we should have to pay for milage because we already pay a lot on gas, etc.

    May 22, 2011 at 11:18 am |
  271. Delaney

I think that this is wrong. Now that gas prices are going up, people have less money, like my family. Some people wouldn't be able to afford that. I think that we are fine with what we have on taxes. Adding more will make us all more mad than ever, and I don't want our country in a political unrest.

    May 22, 2011 at 2:09 pm |
  272. Betsy

I live in a rural area really I think that could not get any more stupider if it had to. I mean what about the farmers especially during the growing and planting season. And then with people going on vacations this summer and lots of them will be driving that would be a huge tax.

    May 22, 2011 at 3:49 pm |
  273. Darian

I do think that taxing the mileage would be a good idea for the government that way they could take care of highways, roads and other governmental issues, but i think it would affect humans in ways like not having money for gas then not being able to go to work then not being able to buy groceries and then last not being able to feed yourself or your family.

    May 22, 2011 at 4:38 pm |
  274. stevie

i don't think we should be taxed on mileage is not fair what if you take a long drive for vacation and decide you would like to drive there so dose that mean you have to take a plane which also is not cheap

    May 22, 2011 at 5:45 pm |
  275. Sabrina

I would rather have tax on gas, because I live so far from town, that if we had to pay per mile, we would have major problems.

    May 22, 2011 at 5:50 pm |
  276. Ashlyn

Either way people are getting charged more so it doesn't really matter to me but others may argue

    May 22, 2011 at 5:53 pm |
  277. Jefferson

I can't believe that they are taxing mileage! Alot of people have to drive, and it's unfair people have to pay for it, along with the ever rising gas money. This idea should not be used and it is a pretty bad idea in the first place.

    May 22, 2011 at 6:06 pm |
  278. Miguel

They shouldn't have the permission to look at how far people drive. And people go on road trips and vacations all the time, so it is unfair for everyone if they are taxed by the mile

    May 22, 2011 at 7:23 pm |
  279. Amanda

Taxing people on how many miles they drive is ridiculous. People are already giving up driving and others are carpooling. No one will like this and more people will stop driving. It isn't a good idea and it shouldn't be enabled on any American.

    May 22, 2011 at 7:49 pm |
  280. Gianni

Taxing people on the mileage they drive would not be a very smart idea in my opinion. The government already taxes you when buy your car, when you regerister your car, and when when you put gas into your car. How much more are they going to tax you on?

    May 22, 2011 at 8:10 pm |
  281. Alex

Dumbest idea ever. This makes me mad because I've wanted to drive ever since I was little. and now that I am close to three years away from it, I don't want to have to deal with the government's privacy invasion of taxing by the milage of my car. It's none of their business

    May 22, 2011 at 8:39 pm |
  282. Kate

Taxing by the mileage for non-gasoline using cars would be a great idea, but taxing cars for miles that already have to pay taxes for gas isn't. People already have to pay a lot for gasoline, and adding on to those costs won't help the economy.

    May 22, 2011 at 8:49 pm |
  283. Tyler

I think taxing mileage is a terrible idea. Gas prices are already way too high. Citizens already have to pay for gas. I don't think they should have to pay for mileage too.

    May 22, 2011 at 9:31 pm |
  284. Summer

I don't think this is a good idea. Don't we already pay enough taxes?

    May 22, 2011 at 10:03 pm |
  285. Cory

The problem with taxing on gasoline is people have cars with different gas millages. If its by the miles you get a true measurement of how much the person is driving

    May 22, 2011 at 10:17 pm |
  286. Arturo

If motorcyclist pay a little bit for gas know they would pay more money

    May 22, 2011 at 10:26 pm |
  287. Catherine

I think that they should charge us only on Gasoline Tax instead of Mileage. ONe of the reasons why is because it wouldn't be so fair to pay tax of how much we travel, due to work, school, etc. The price of Gasoline is already a big amount, and it wouldn't be fair if we were charged of how much we travel.

    May 22, 2011 at 10:47 pm |
  288. Amber

I think taxing people on the miles they drive is a bad idea because some people have to commute to work and school and taxing their mileage wouldn't be fair.

    May 22, 2011 at 11:46 pm |
  289. Caitlin

i would do the gas because gas is high enough and my family gets good gas mileage and if you charge by the mileage morer families wouldn't travel a lot because of the mileage i love to tracvel. That would be disappointing if i couldn't go places just because of the tax on gas mileage.

    May 23, 2011 at 8:42 am |
  290. Darbi

we already pay a lot on a gas etc. So why should we pay on milage.

    May 23, 2011 at 9:14 am |
  291. Ben

I think its a bad idea because the trucking companies would have to pay a lot of money.

    May 23, 2011 at 9:17 am |
  292. Sandy

I think they shouldn't have tax on mileage because some people have to go far for thier jobs, it wouldn't be fair for them. It may help the gas price go down, but its also unfair.

    May 23, 2011 at 9:19 am |
  293. Edwin

I think they shouldnt charge you on how much you drive because alot of people drive alot and they would be charged alot but if people wont buy gas anymore the gas prices will go up

    May 23, 2011 at 9:19 am |
  294. Joseph

Its a bad idea, we already pay for gas and us paying for how far we drive is just another way for them to get even more money from us.Plus its unfair to people that have to drive farther than others because they live in rural areas.

    May 23, 2011 at 9:23 am |
  295. Angel

I think changing it would make alot of people mad . So its better to just keep it how it is .

    May 23, 2011 at 9:29 am |
  296. Gabby

i think that the should keep it the same because people that are driving farther are going to have to pay more and i dont think that is fair and the people are going to be unhappy and about it. also people have longer commuts to get to get to work and back home. and some people go travaling around and that can be a long trip.

my opinion on the subject is that we should not be chargedm on how many miles we drive. i think there are more cons then pros to the subject. the cons are that it will hurt our economy more as in people probabley wont drive as far to do stuff. so that would make companies loose business. I dont think its far for people who have to drive long distances for work because you have to have work to have money and if the only job you can find is far away then thats not fair. the only pro thta i can think of is that thg

    May 23, 2011 at 9:41 am |
  298. michael

adults dirve because they need to be some where and taxing the mileage is just going to create more and more broke people and more homeless people and america doesnt need more homeless people.

i dont really like the idea but then again i dont drive so it could go either way some people like the idea and some people do i just hope they make a decision before i get to drive.

  301. Karianna

I would be ok with taxing mileage because our family owns a suburban and a minivan and doesn't drive very far to work and school. As a whole country, I think that gas should be taxed because of everyone else using fuel-eficient cars, so it's hard to say.

    May 23, 2011 at 9:47 am |
  302. Mona

i think taxing by milage cost alot of money so it's better to tax by gasoline

i think its not a good idea to tax a mileage on a car becuasse it will be really expensive and some people dont have the money and time to pay atteention on those.and it may violate their privacy and not feel safe anymore...

tax is not fair because peoples are losing there jobs and they got to pay the bills and
    stuff.

    May 23, 2011 at 10:30 am |
  309. Minyoung

I think taxing the mileage is practical to prevent hirting envirment and filling the hole of taxing.but it would not be best way when global emergency of the economy is gettng better. In fact, taxing the mileage is useful method of secure the country's economy.but it could intruded the people's basic human rights because mileage give nation a uncomfortable minding.

    May 23, 2011 at 10:32 am |
  310. Aaron

The gas price is really going up.And many people drive very far to their jobs and that is why they are buying cars that let them save more money. So charging for the mileage is not very fair. The govenment should really just stick to one thing and not change things because it might not affect them but it does affect the people who have to drive far.

    May 23, 2011 at 10:33 am |
  311. Tg

This is totally not fair becaues my mom have to drive every day and she allways get so mad becaues of how much money she have to pay for the gas! 😦

    May 23, 2011 at 10:36 am |
  312. zoe

i think that it isnt fair to tax people on the milage that their car has so they should just tax the gas. But it isnt fair to tax gas either so i dont agree with anything the government choses when it comes to cars and gas.

    May 23, 2011 at 10:37 am |
  313. Amaris

I think is good to have good gas milage around and the government taking in less money. I think this is just one step closer to our government getting better.

  314. maya

I say that it is good but bad at the same time .It is good because it helps make roads and mass transit. but it is bad because people need that money now a days because of the tough economy.

tax on houses is one thing but tax on miles and gas to. that's just not right

    May 23, 2011 at 10:56 am |
  317. Millie

i understand we need the money but, this would be unfair for people in rual areas like me also what about companies and people who teach others to drive ? it also wouldn't be fair to tax people with a job in somewhere in Boston who lives in worcester or the other way around
i cannot see this helping us very much.

    May 23, 2011 at 11:12 am |
  318. Aaron

With the prices of gas already on the rise, people can't afford to pay taxes on the miles they drive. There is no way that this idea would work, people would just not drive as much...

    May 23, 2011 at 11:25 am |
  319. Brooke

Putting a tax on mileage would just make people angry, especially because the economy is already in a bad state. No one wants to spend more money on gas and their car since so much is already spent on them.

    May 23, 2011 at 11:27 am |
  320. mieesha

I think its not right because if you go on a trip of some kinds in your car not only will you have to pay for snacks but you will also have to pay for how ever many miles you go which could be a lot.

    May 23, 2011 at 11:29 am |

I do not think you should tax mileage because some people use there cars more than others.

    May 23, 2011 at 12:22 pm |

I think that gas prices are already high enough, and to make it on how many miles you travel? Thats unfair. Maybe some people work is far away or requirs traveling..

    May 23, 2011 at 12:22 pm |
  326. ayden

i dont think that is a good thing to do, because so many people already dont want to drive anymore because of how expensive gas is. not a good idea!

    May 23, 2011 at 12:24 pm |
  327. Eddie

I think if the government does tax miles it will be good and bad for different reasons because we will be losing more money, but the government will do more repairs to roads.

    May 23, 2011 at 12:24 pm |
  328. anthony

I personally think that they shoudent do that cause people are alredy giving up on driving cause of the gas prices and now there thinking of making us pay for how many miles we drive we pay in tax this is getting to far. also carl i like your puns 🙂

    May 23, 2011 at 12:28 pm |
  329. Jaclyn

Some government officials want to begin a new tax on gasoline. I strongly believe that we are already taxed too much. This proposed tax, on mileage vs. gallons could negatively impact the sale of more environmentally conscious vehicles which are hopefully the wave of the future. Should we really tax people trying to make a difference? The impacts of the recession are already taking their toll on the common American family. We can't afford another unthoughtful tax.

    May 23, 2011 at 12:45 pm |
  330. Chrystine

I think they should just bring the Gas price down its going to get worse when i hit like 32 >.> i mean the government gets money the government goes up but we as the people go down the tube >.< can we just get along..

    May 23, 2011 at 1:22 pm |
  331. Zane

I think that taking on the milage is a bad idea and that they should tax the gas. It is unfair for people who live a long way away from places they need to go. If anything I think that they should tax on gas.

    May 23, 2011 at 1:29 pm |
  332. Tenzin

I think we shouldnt add the tax mileage on our cars because it would just be a wast of money and people probably wont even drive their cars if they have to pay on how many miles they drive.

    May 23, 2011 at 1:30 pm |
  333. Adam

I think that gas should be the same;Taxed by gallon not by miles. My thoughts on this is that it would be to much money. Also that people wouldn't like the change and maybe start a strike or a boycott .

    May 23, 2011 at 1:30 pm |
  334. Tyler

Taxing people for the miles they drive i think is a bad idea because gas prices are high enough. Also some peolpe have to drive far ways to get to work and it would cost a lot more money for them just to get to work.

    May 23, 2011 at 1:32 pm |
  335. Kelsey

I think people should still be charged by the gallon. Because people are spending their money on buying these new cars that get better mileage. So its fair to to keep things the way they are.

    May 23, 2011 at 1:33 pm |
  336. mikayla

i dont think that they should tax people on the miles because people might go more miles then gallons they use because there gallons can let them go more miles.

    May 23, 2011 at 1:33 pm |
  337. luke

i dont think it is fair to put tax on milage because what if someone has alot of money and has to drive alot for there kids they put more money into taxes than anyone

    May 23, 2011 at 1:33 pm |
  338. Ashton

i think we should be charged for mileage not gas because for one gas is expensive enough and some people have to drive farther than others. so it would only be fair.

I don't really care either, as long as it goes toward something big that will make travel on the roads better in the future. like if you want to make a new road with that money, but if there is another problum like [potholes], you should probally fix the potholes because they might be popping tires more than a good, paved road, brand new.

i think taxing mileage is not fare ,because some people might have a job far away from home or an other activity and drive farther than others.so it is not fare to them against people who dont work far away

On every gallon of gas you buy, 18.4 cents go to the government. If you put 20 gallons of gas in your vehicle and 18.4 of it goes to the government 386.00 you spend on 20 gallons of gas and I don't think thats' fair to the buyer [of gas]. It isn't fair that the government gets some of our parent's, grandparent's, or even our brother's or sister's hard earned cash to blow on something silly.....

    It's just not fair.

It is a really bad idea. A lot of people HAVE to drive state to state, whether it be to get to work or just so that they can see their families. Putting a tax on the number of miles we drive would not only make it harder for the average person, but make it almost impossible for anyone with minimum wage. Bye bye, budget family vacations!

I think its a bad idea because if someone in California doesn't like planes and wants to go to Florida then they have to pay a TON of money.

I don't hate the idea, but i don't like it either. The reason people buy fuel efficient cars is to save money. Maybe in a few years this won't be a bad idea, but definitely not now with this economy.

Taxing mileage is wrong, we never did it before and we did just fine.

I think that it is actually a good idea to use money from gas to keep highways in shape, but to tax people on how many miles they drive isn't a good idea because people can't help where they have to go.

charging for the amount you drive is ridiculous. gas prices are already really high. having to drive a long way to work would make you go bankrupt.

Why would you make people pay tax for mileage? With gas prices don't we already pay enough? Plus, it would be unfair to older cars with more mileage. That's just ridiculous.

Taxing on mileage is not a good idea. It won't be fair to people who have to drive long distances to get to work, go shopping, etc. Gas prices are already high enough, and if you are going to be charged because of your miles, then people might not go to different places as much.

I want our higways to look nice so I think they should tax on both but, not raise the price of gas (we are already paying too much). We need our highways working and that means a little piece of your money has to beused. They take money anway what 1s 19 cents going to do?

I think taxing on gas is OK it has to be done so, let it be done.

Tax on both. You are going to get taxed onyway so what is 19 cents going to do. We need our highways to look nice and that can only be done with a little tax. So, don't raise the price of gas just take more for our highways and roads.

What's the point on taxing milage rather than gasoline? If you drive a half a mile to and from work, it seems pretty fair, but for those who have to drive six or maybe even seven miles to get to work seems unfair. Plus, if you're trying to save up for an XBOX 360 I bet a third of that money would go to milage taxation. I think it's best if we just keep the gasoline tax.
