Music: For Better or for Worse?

It was a study that took a look at teenagers who listen to a lot of music - we're talking four to five hours a day - and it suggested they may be at a higher risk for depression.  One thing that's unclear is whether teens may listen to more music when they're already down - or if listening to a lot of music can bring them down.

Think about this:  When you're feeling down, do you believe that listening to music is more helpful or harmful?  ...or does it all just depend on the music and the timing?

I think listening to music for that long everyday plays with your emotions too much, and can make you more suseptible to feeling depressed. Music is generally about the extremes of the emotional spectrum, and if you are constantly exposed to that, then you can lose touch with the safer areas in between. You learn to feel things much more strongly.

The type of music you listen to depends on how you might feel afterward. If you listen to depressing music then your might feel depressed. If you listen to music that is more delightful then the chances of the person being depressed afterwards are lower.

If I'm feeling down and I'm listening to music, it's actually helpful. I actually sing to a song if I'm sad. This cheers me up. It makes me think of the reason why I'm sad. Then I actually go to sleep and wake up happy after I've thought it through.

When your feeling down it could be harmful to listen to music, but it could be helpful it just depends on the song. Some songs are happy and up beat could be helpful, but song that are sad or depressing could harmful and could lead to depression.

Its been proven that listing to your favorite song, improves concentration and memorie through out the day. For me, listing to my favorite song makes me happy, and sing along. Although sometimes, when you are down, about anything, they may bring up your situation in the song, and that makes you feel even worse. So it depends on the music, and your situation.

I think that the music that kids are listening to these days are 90% up-beat and happy sounding. I personally enjoy coming home from a hard day at school and turning on my playest titled "Dance Party".

If teens have a passion for music then there going to listen to it no matter what I'm pretty sure it's not the misic thats bringing the teens down it's somethingelse that is not our buisness. I think teens should continue to listen to music. When I feel down thats what I do.

I listen to music whenever I am in my room. When I am down listening to music helps get my mind off of the subject and gets my mind thinking of music. Music helps me to get away from reality and calm down.

I could definitely see how music could make someone depressed. I think it just depends on the person. For some people it might just release some emotions. I think it also depends on the type of music you’re listening to as well. I definitely get depressed when I listen to rap music so I could see how it could be an issue.

Listening to music, I think , is simply a way to express emotions. Whether you were already sad or if you weren't. Music can and has always been powerful enough to change anyone's opinions on anything. I don't think it is music that makes teens depressed, if anything i think it does give them a way to show their feelings in a more literal fashion. Therefore , music can be helpful because sometimes with all the hormones us teens experience, it can be difficult for us to describe it in words. Music is what helps us do that.

Different types of music can either make you feel better or worse. It is up to the listener to decide which that is since everyone is effected differently.

Well I listen to music when I'm down and I usually try to skip the sad songs when I'm feeling down. I usually listen to music whenever I got time; I could listen to music when I'm doing my homework or when my parents tell me some bad news and it helps a whole lot. I really don't think I could do anything without music in my life. Life would just be to complicated without the music.

I don't think music is a bad thing at all. For me, that is the one way I can deal with my emotions. When I have a bad day, I tend to listen to more music. I sometimes listen to songs to help me feel better, or songs to just help let it all out. I don't think that listening to music is ever a bad thing, but sometimes certain songs can effect peoples mood in a negative way.

I don't think that it's music in general that get people down, but rather the content of the music that depresses them. A lot of popular bands are about negative topics – suicide, broken hearts. But a lot of stuff out there can be equally encouraging.

Music helps in both ways; It can help when you are depressed, it can also hurt when you are happy or sad. But it is always a choice by the listener about what music to listen to!

It depends on the type and the timing. For example, many teens listening to dark, depressing, sad music when they're feeling sad. This just makes the emotions worse. But on the other hand, if you were to try listening to a bright, happy song instead of the sad one when you were feeling down, the music would actually make you feel happier.

I guess this all depends on what kind of music you listen to. If your listening to a depressing song, then naturally it's like salting your wounds. But, if your listening to hopeful, or inspiring song, that may help. Personally, when I am down I don't listen to the words as much as the rhythm and tune, that helps me.

Hello, I'm from South Korea. In our country also many teens listen music. Well, I think if the music is sad, they will be down, if music is cheerful.... being down's probabilty will be low.

I know from experience. It all depends on the song and the situation. I have been depressed before and am often treated for it, and music is a comfort because some songs I can relate to and know other people feel the same way sometimes so I'm not the only one. But also, depending on what song I do listen to, I could get depressed from it because it can bring back painful memories. It all depends on the situation and the person.

I don't think it is harmful to hear music. I think it is sometimes helpful when your feeling sad or emotional but if you are listening to music like four to five hours i think it will probably affect you. I also think that maybe music is the kind of thing that gets you depressed because music is written with a meaning and sometimes that meaning can make you feel bad or it might mean something to you.

  33. Khymie

Well I do listen to music when I'm down but that shouldn't really affect teens of having depression. When I'm sad or down I listen to music to open up and pretend I'm in my own little world and it makes me feel good. But it doesn't really depend on the timing of the music. It depends on the words in the music because that's where all their sadness comes from because those words have a meaning and purpose.

I believe that music is helpful. I know that when something is going on in my life, i listen to music. Plus when i am reading , or having to do chores i listen to music.. it just helps me concentrate. But yet, i don't listen ALL the time. The only time that i listen to music for a long time is when we are going on a road trip, or flying on a plane.

I listen to a lot of music, hours a day. I listen to music when I'm sad, and it helps, depending on what you listen to. I like to listen to music that the lyrics are connected to how I'm feeling, and it doesn't make me sad, it makes me feel better. It's good to know that other people have the same feelings as you, and it makes me feel better.

Well when I am feeling sad or depressed I find that music makes me fell better. There are certain songs that have an up beat tempo that makes me want to dance and it makes me happier. But I think listening to music can make you more depressed and it can make you happy. It can go both ways. Like say you and your boyfriend or girlfriend just broke up and there is that song that reminds you of them. Well that would probably make you more depressed. But most of the time it makes me happier.

When I am feeling down, listening to sad slow songs does make me feel more down sometimes, but other times it makes me think hard about the situation making it easier to decide how I will fight through whatever struggle I may be passing. The lyrics and tune of songs definitely effect moods, it just depends on the person whether you consider the effect positive or negative. I consider it positively because it helps me. Listening to up beat songs when I am down might help bring my mood up. If I'm not already down, listening to sad songs don't tend to bring me down, I just sing along and enjoy the story in the lyrics.

I completely believe that depressed people listen to music much more than others. Most of the people I know who have depression are music addicts, and it seems like the people who aren't just don't listen to as much music, because everybody listens to a little. But, I'm not saying music causes depression because it is scientifically proven that its a mental defect which could have been brought on by expierences or just a chemical defect, but most often music is what people with depression turn to as a release or as something to connect with artistically, not something to make them more depressed.

When I feel sad, I love listening to "sad music" like acoustic or piano songs because it reflects how I feel, and when I feel bad I can't listen to anything else because it would be inappropriate. On the other hand it also tends to extend the period of sadness : I mean it doesn't really help to feel better... but it is an important step before becoming happy again. According to me, it helps to make the transition 😉 So for me it is more helpful than harmful. Good bye !

Some of the students in our class feel that listening to music is helpful. A student's reply is that when he feels sad, listening to music can help him become hyper. Another student feels that listening to country music can make one sad, but some of it can also help. Overall, the students feel it is the timing of listening to music that plays an important role.

I think that people are sad, and therefore they listen to more music. From personal experience, I know that music often helps people cope with many issues and the emotional pain they feel. They just need to be careful that they don't drown out the music they should be creating in their real lifes.

I think that it's good to listen to music! I feel like if I don't have my iPod to listen to when I get home, I'll freak. And it also depends on the type of music you listen to – the music on my iPod makes me want to get up and dance, but if you have more sadenning songs, then maybe you do have a higher risk of depression.

Music isn't harmful.Depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain. Sometimes memories come with songs that make someone feel down but its not the music's fault. To me I love music I listen to it 24/7. I am always happy, motivated, and energetic. Everyone's body is different so we each have different reactions physically and mentally. Not every teen will have the same result to listening to music. If you think outside the box music has a message that can effect you in a negative or in a positive way.

I believe whether getting depressed or not highly depends on the duration of listening to it.

Even if it gets your mind tranquil on first an hour, you would lose your attention span 3 or more hours later and start to be annoyed with it because It has turned out to be "a noise", not "a music" anymore.

I think music is really effective to ease my mind only in my capacity to accept it as a music.

Music is helpful because it inspires people to try their best like the song we are the world by Michael Jackson it inspires people to try and help the world. Music is also helpful because some music is educational like the ABC's. The song make a wave is also a good inspirational song too . It's not the music's fault if children are depressed it's the child's fault. Don't blame the music blame yourself. You made yourself depressed!

Music can be helpful because when somebody that is sad could make them happy. It could also inspire them to do stuff. Music could also be educational. The way it is educational is you could make a rap that tells you how to mutiply or divide numbers. Some songs also be harmful and helpful. It depens on the song type.

It depends on the type of music the person and timing because if you're really sad and you listen to slow and sad music you may get depressed even more and if you listen to fast music you may feel happier. I think that music can both help you and make you sad. I think it can help because maybe there are certain songs that remind someone of something good that's happened and it makes them feel better. but it can also make you sad, because there are certain songs that are just sad and maybe a certain song reminds someone of something bad that's happened to them or their family.

Music to me is a way to cheer up after a bad day at school. It helps me concentrate and escape the real world. I listen to a lot of up-beat country songs, with positive vibes. I believe it depends on the music and timing. For example when, I'm sad, I'll admit the music I listen to kinda makes me worse. When I'm happy though and listen to happy music, nothing stands in my way. I think music is both helpful and harmful. It helps you express your feelings and thoughts.

I think that teenagers go towards music as a solution to there problems and how they feel. If a girl/boy is feeling sad , he or she may listen to music because it will remind them of a time in there life , and in that situation music may be a leading cause to teenage depression.

Music could also be a leading cause to teenage depression because teenagers may listen music that is more positive and it may give them hope but, when they think back to reality they get sad.

Music, for me is way to cope with any situation. A different problem everyday, and for everyone there's a song to show me I'm never alone. Listening to music makes it easier for me to get threw the rough times and enjoy the good ones too. Music hits memory and feelings differently for each person.
To much music causing depression, I do not agree with at all. It's all about how you look at it, obviously a song you like other people do to. Music to me shows me no matter what situation I'm in, somebody has been through it, and someone will always help me through it. 🙂

I think that music does effect people's mood. I don't really think that music alone can cause depression though. There has to be other things going on. I do think that music can put a person in a better mood and can pump them up, but I don't think people should get depressed over music.

Considering I actually struggle with Bipolar disorder, my mood generally depicts what music I'm going to listen to. I feel that music doesn't particularly choose my mood, but coushens it. If I'm feeling sad I will listen to maybe slower tempo music, but I wouldn't say it makes me more sad.

Just because it makes me forget about everything and make everything alright. Music is made to express peoples feelings. I can see how some music can make you depressed. That doesn't mean that all music makes you that way. For me, music relaxes me and gets me pumped up. I focus more if I am listening to music. If I am having a bad day music is the only solution. Imagine where we would be if we didn't have music? I think we would be missing out on how people are feeling. Music is a big part of my life and it inspires me.

I think that it depends on the type of music you are listening to and your mood. Music can definitely affect a person's mood. When I'm feeling down I can listen to music to either lighten the mood or reflect on the mood. It all depends on what I feel like...feeling sorry for myself or getting the depressing stuff out of my head.

I dont think that if you are depressed and you listen to music a lot it is going to bring you down. I think it all mostly depends on the person and what music they listen to. Say someone just went through a bad break up and they are listening to sad break up songs, then that might bring them down but music could also pump you up. I know for a lot of sports people listen to music to get pumped up. That doesnt make people depressed.

I don't think that music and depression have any correlation. I think that people listen to whatever music fits their mood. I listen to a lot of music and whatever music I listen to is what mood I'm in. If i was just not having a good day I would listen to rock, if it was a really good day and I was in a good mood it would be pop/ hip hop like energizer songs. I guess in my case if the more music I listened to the more depressed I was, I wouldn't be healthy. I live my life and I'm happy with lots of music in my life so I don't think that music can tell the mental state of someone.

I think that music is way more helpful then harmful, people use music as an escape from certain emotions or situations they are facing. The only way it can be depressing is if you are listening to a song with a depressing tone. Since i'm an aspiring artist/ musician i know the influence music can have on people, every song has a message depending on how you interpret it determines how it effects you.

Im a teenager that enjoys the impact of music on emotions. I do believe that listening to music depends on the music and the timing for many reasons. The lyrics, rhythm, and the speed/melody all effects a teenagers mind set as well as emotions. R&B and slow songs tend to have a soothing and calming effect on a person's mood oppose to rap music and heavy rock. As a teenager, I use music as a channel to relieve stress and to have a way to connect myself with others through the words of the songs. I do believe that music has a major influnce on teenagers in a sense of their mood, emotions, and lifestyle.

Music is defiantly away that most teens deal with some situations. When I heard that music could cause depression it concerns me, but what would we use to cope in a healthier way?

I think music is amazing! It never makes me sad ever! It makes me feel good, and listening to music should make other people happy too. It expresses peoples feelings, happy or sad, and its creative, and society doesn't have enough creativity so where ever you can find it is good.

I don't think that it's just music in general that makes teens depressed. It probably would be the type of music. I do listen to music when I'm sad and some songs might remind me of certain thing, but I wouldn't say they make me depressed. I ❤ Music!

I think that when you are having a bad day listening to music does help. I think this because music can relate to your life so well, and make you feel better. I also think that listening to music when you are happy and in a good mood, is good for you. I think that the only way it can depress you is if you listen to really sad depressing music. But in most ways I think that music helps us, it gets us through the day!

When I'm feeling down I listen to music a lot. I find it very helpful in taking my mind off the problems and especially if it's an upbeat, fun song it helps lighten my mood. I do listen to some depressing music, but that's mostly because I can relate to those songs better than others sometimes. I'm sure a lot of other kids feel the same.

It's hard being a teenager in high school, and music is my escape.

I think music is good if you are feeling down because there are alot of songs that can really cheer you up and if you choose to listen to a sad song then thats your choice. Listening to a happy song can really help you when your feeling down.

These studies may be correct but it really depends on what type of music I'm listening to. If I'm already depressed and want to wallow in self-pity I'll turn on some 'emo' music like Paramore or Lifehouse. But if I'm in a good mood I'll turn on some peppy Kesha song or maybe Katy Perry. Now say I'm depressed and I don't want to feel sorry for myself. Then I'll turn on a dance song and dance my problems away. If I'm happy and I listen to Patrick Watson's the Great Escape of course I'm going to feel sad for the rest of the day. But human emotions are very changable and by the next day I'm fine. So really this 'study' they had is irrelevant because teens are different.

Whenever I am down I always think of music being helpful, but there is some time in life where you get told bad news or your relationship ends and you listen to music, but it makes things worse. I am on both sides but I am more for the music helps, because it does help me in alot of ways.

I think that listening to music increases how good you feel. When I am down and depressed, the first thing I do is turn on the radio or listen to my ipod. I really think that listening to music is helpful, but I do think that you shouldn't listen to it all the time. Try taking a book out and READ!

Listening to music isn't bad for your health, it is good for the soul. It is like a sad movie you cry and then you walk out happy.

It depends on the type of music. If you are listening to happy music, it will probably put you in a good mood. If you are listening to sad, slow music it will tend to make you depressed. If I am in a bad mood, I listen to faster music. It puts me in a good mood.

I think that music is helpful when your sad because it might be talking about your probelm and it might tel you that things are going to get better and it might help. I also think that maybe it could not be helpful because maybe something has happened and you're getting over it and then a song comes on that reminds you of it and it makes you sad again.

sometimes when i am feeling down i like to listen to music and sometimes i dont. i guess that it all depends on why i am feeling down and what type of music it is. i think that if you are feeling down or if someone has done wrong to you, you shouldnt listen to songs with cuss words or bad messages in them. however if you do then that might make you want to go get back at them and thats not always the brightest idea.

Music can help your mood get better or worse depending on who you are. In making your mood better, you can listen to music that fits your mood and lightens it in time. In making it worse, if you were depressed and listened to depressing music, the music could bring you down even lower.

I think that depression being related to music depends entirely on the timing. While listening to music after a close loved one has passed away may make it harder. However, other types of music might set the scene for a fun party. Also, listening to music often times helps students to concentrate while doing homework because it minimizes distractions that might be happening around them. All in all, I do not think that music is related to depression, simply because almost everyone listens to music on a regular basis, depressed or not.

I am one of those teens that listens to 4 to 5 hours a music per day, I rarely leave the house or even a room in my house without my iPod. I find music to be very helpful in many ways, not just when I am in a bad mood. Songs can do many things for teens and people in general, inspire, encourage, cheer them up, say the things we can't. I believe music is helpful and does not relate directly to depression. Music, says everything I can't.

It depeneds on the person and what they are feeling at that point in time if you're depressed and want to feel happy you probably shouldn't be listening to sad music instead music that it is upbeat. But again it really just depends on a person's state of mind.

I feel that listening to music is good, no matter the situation. I listen to loud music when I lift weights and quiet sad music when I am unhappy. If it fits my mood, I end up feeling good afterwards, no matter the song.

Life can be full of ups and downs. As a teenager, its important to have an effective outlet. Music is the outlet that most teens turn to. You can be in a horrible mood and when your favorite song comes on, your day is completely turned around. Being a teen girl, sadness and heartbreak happen, but every now and then, its nice to have a song that speaks to your situation. Music is great because of how it makes one feel. Nothing beats singing your favorite tune.

Listening to music is a sort of stress release for me, and it helps take my mind off of events that may be troubling in my life. I listen to music to bring my attitude up because I think music is empowering...after all it is the global language!

Like most people, I choose to listen to music that matches my mood. When I'm down, I choose more depressing music, which a lot of times gets me thinking even more about why I'm upset. Listening to numerous sad songs in a row makes me dwell on my emotions. I don't really think that affects my overall state of mind though. I always get over it and move on, then listen to different styles of music depending on my new current mood.

  104. Whitney

Whether I'm in a good mood or a bad mood, I can always find that one song that keeps me going or brings me up. I think that music is a simple of way for somebody to express their personality, character traits, and emotions without actually having to write it down on a piece of paper or telling somebody. I do think, however, that if somebody chooses to sit alone all day and listen to music that there could be a high risk of them not being as social as others and becoming depressed as a result. I love music so to think that it could cause somebody to go into depression kind of bums me out. Music is a great thing in all of ours lives and should lift our spirits instead of bringing us down. 🙂

I am always listening to music when I am sad. And music can bring me into another world without sadness and troubles, which makes my spirit free and comfortable. So, I can't imagine how music could cause people deprssion.

I work on two seperate farms, when i'm in the tractor I always have the radio on. I listen to about 4 hours of music a day during the school year, and in the summer about 8 hours of music a day. Music can make me both happy and sad, it all depends on the day and current events around town. One of the main reasons I love music is because I am a singer, i think people who can't sing don't like music as much, and listening to music can cause them to be depressed.

    April 14, 2011 at 12:16 pm |

I think it depends on the content. I listen to Greenday on my computer and most of their songs have cussing and other bad things, but I know that that isn't saying that I should do that. I think that music can sometimes affect your attitude. I listen to music when I'm happy and sad, but not for hours at a time. I think that I read more than I listen to music. I usually read about 4 to 5 hours a day.

It would be for better and for worse. Usually kids express thierselves by the music they listen to. Some songs may be something they can relate to when they're going through something or just feel down. I listen to music just for the fun of it, and to block out noises. The sad songs are what bring them down, I guess. If they want to listen to music just let them.=D

Whenever I'm feeling down, I've usually found music to help me, and almost never make it worse. It sort of depends on your personality, and what music affects you in different ways. For instance, if you like rap and hip-hop, that might make you feel better. But if you are a hard rock fan, it might make you feel worse.

Music is a big part of my life, I'll tell you that. I don't listen to music as much as others; I probably only spend less two hours listening to music, but when I do, I'm also busy doing something else like cleaning my room or doing my homework. Music definitely helps bring me back up when I'm down. I can be totally devistated and in a depressed mood one minute, but as soon as the music turns on, I can't help but smile. Music makes me happy. Period.
So in my opinion, I think society is just frantically looking for answers, but not finding anything significant enough.

I disagree. Some kids have a rough life or a hard time at school with bullys and school work ect. and music helps them get through it. The artists or song lyrics may relate to what the kid is going through or has gone through. & I bet that at almost everyone looks up to one singer/performing artist.

I think people can listen to music to cheer them up or they can listen to it for enjoyment. Some people listen to their ipods or mp3s on shuffle and a sad song can come on that reminds you of a deceased relative or friend or family moved far away.

Music is something that we all enjoy to listen to, and something teens find they can relate to. So when we're feeling a certain way, we gravitate towards music that help us enhance that feeling. As such, I can see where it can be harmful when someone is feeling angry or sad or upset, and the music they listen to focuses on those feelings. Other than that, I don't see how something we all enjoy can be harmful to our well being.

The type of genre is the main cause of emotion. If the music talks about death, suicide, hard times really, it WILL make you sad. If the music is upbeat and talks about happy or funny things, it will most likely make you happy.

The majority of youngsters in my class believe that listening to music is helpful because you can express your feelings through music.

personally i listen to music at least 8 hours a day, music is my life. but, i listen to it when in upset, when im sad, but mostly when im happy. for some reason if i DONT listen to music, i get even more depressed. i really think that it just depends on what kind of music you listen to. sad music, makes you sad, happy music makes you happy, and get up and move music, makes you want to get up and move. all in all, i think music is an amazing thing, and that it can influence you. wheather in a good way, or a bad way.

From what i think... i think music can be helpful and harmful to many diffrent people. To some people music can be helpful by them taking out thier emotions and make them feel better when they are down. Also to some other people it can be harmful because it can remember them of there brake up or somethng related to that but it also depends to what music you play.

In my opinion, Yes i do think most kids do listen to music because they are sad, and since there's so many different types of music out there to fit our personality and are emotion at that time, that it feels almost like they know exactly what we are going threw or like someone out there is listening to us.

I can understand it bringing someone down when they listen to it 4-5 hours a day. Personally, i listen to it when I'm feeling down. Or sometimes just because I want to. I think it depends on what kind of music the person listens to. Is it a fast, happy song or a slow, sad song. I think it all depends on the type of music that they decide on.

Whenever I'm feeling down I like to listen to music. It helps me feel better. I think why it helps me feel better is the songs that I listen to explain the feelings that I'm feeling. But for other kids it might be bad for them to listen to music when they're down or depressed. Why I think this is because the song that they are listening to might attempt them to do something bad or wrong. But it all depends on the song.

it depends on my mood and the song i am listening to. If i am happy and i listen to we're walking on sunshine it will make me happy. If i am in a regular mood and i happen to listen to a love song it would make me sad because i don't have a girlfreind.

I think it helps you if you are already down because it allows you to block out the things that are bringing you down. Also I think it can depend on the type of music and the timing, like if you are sad its probably not the best idea to listen to sad and depressing music. You would probably turn on happier music or your favorite song if you are already down.

i think its helpful when your down because it might keep you from hitting something. It can also be harmful if you listen to rock or heavy metal you might want to hit something. As long as your not listening to that kind of music your good. I listen to about 6 hours of music if im outside i have my ipod on listening to music on that. When im inside i listen to the radio. I think music helps me calm down when im mad at someone or something. I have an ipod, radio and i have music on my phone. You can tell that i listen to alot of music.

Music is a great way to express yourself. If you are having a good day you listen to a good song.. If your having a bad day you listen to a song that makes you feel better. No matter what you do you can express your self in different ways. I and most other people express our selfs through music. Music does have some effect on your emotions but, honestly everyone is different. In some ways some people may get depressed by music but, in different ways different people dont get depressed. So in my opioion music is a great way to express your self.!

Phooey! It's ridiculous to think all music will cause depression. It is more likely the type of music they listen to. Rap and heavy metal may go so fast and loud it overloads their brain. I listen to music all the time, and it helps my brain, often lifting my spirits when I'm down. Besides, if all music was harmful, there would be many more kids here with signs of depression.

To me its not about being depressed. Music is a huge part of my life. I live my life to rhythm. Though I am not in to the newer songs and style I listen to a lot of old music and some more recent rock songs. I live to the beat because I think music makes people feel free. When I hit that play button I know that jumping into a new world of rhythm and sound.

I listen to music when I am already feeling down. Music has always been my escape from this world into one that I know of and feel knows me. I admit some of the music I listen to is very depressing, but it's all apart of the mood that I'm in. If I'm in a bad mood I will find a very happy song annoying and I'll shut it off. I would never say that music makes people depressed, we listen to find comfort.

Maybe its just me, but I have not once noticed any negative fluxuation in my mood while or after listening to music. Music is aesthetically pleasing. Most of it, but that is subjective opinion. Unless you listen to sad music 24/7. But I'm not really aware of anyone who does that. It probably depends almost entirely on the person.

I find music very helpfull in life. It expresses emotions and can make you feel a different emotion. For example if your sad turn on a happy song or maybe one that makes you laugh and it will make you feel better, and ,maybe for a little while make you forget what you were sad about. Also it is better to let your emotions out so if you need to cry maybe a sad song is what you need to cry and feel better. Each song is only how you interpret it most of the time. And you pick the song sometimes it goes with your mood but music is helpfull in most situations at least for me.

The music doesn't make you depressed. It helps me to look at my problems in a different way. It helps me fight the depression by making me want to dance, especially upbeat or fast music. Sad songs make me want to sleep, and I feel better when I wake up.

I believe that alot of it has to do with the music you choose to listen too. I find that listening to certain music depending on how I feel makes me feel happy. I think music is a good way to lift your spirits. When I'm mad or down I listen to music a lot. I dont think it brings people down; I think it does the opposite. It also depends on the type of music you listen to. If you listen to heavy metal 24/7, yeah that could do it. But if its country or dance music, your going to want to get up and MOVE!!

Personally I feel that music is a great way for people, me especially, to get away from everyday things. If they are good or bad it is a way for people to relate to something different in a relaxing way. It can be nice and calming for people, or pump people up. It helps people show all different emotions, which is good! Yes, there is music out there that can be upsetting but that sometimes helps people for the better, and if you do feel that it is giving you bad thoughts than you should chose not to listen to it.

I listen to a lot of like dark metal but i can be a great person to get along with. I have my days and so do everyone else so i say pick music you like whether its pop, rock, or easy listening but if you listen to darker stuff like Screamo, that, if it can, can really mess you up big time.

I believe that depressed people have issues with letting people know that they are sick or down so they look for comfort and understanding in the music around them, music is a crazy creation; for every mood, there are countless songs to match it.

I actually belive in this statement because i walk around school and I see the people that have headphones in all the time and i see them walk alone all the time. Its not that they don't have friends it just that they either don't want to talk to anyone or its just the fact that we are becoming an anti-social people in this world.

I think that music makes teens feel more depresedin different situations. I think this beacuse if you already are depressed and if you listen to music i belive from experience that it does make you feel more depressed. But when i sometimes have friends over and we have dance parties or just listen to the music we dont really get more depressed. I belive that in different situations music can make you feel different ways, and I belive it depends what kind of music your listing to, if its slow sad songs and your already depressed then it will make you even more depressed. There is two differnt sides to the story and many many different kinds of music.

When I'm felling down I listen to music as an escape to get my mind off of the things that bother me. I don't get depressed while listening to music and I think a lot of teens use music to escape or use music to explain what they can't. Music is important in daily life, everybody listens to music and I bet everybody has at least one song they know no matter what will cheer them up. Music can be powerful and bring up sad things are other emotions to if the person relates the song to a traumatic experience that they went through. I don't think that music makes teens depressed when they listen to it because teens always have there iPods on them and are always listening to music.

Overall, most of my class feels that music is helpful when you are down. The students also feel that it depends on the music you listen, too:

Billy- Like, Elenor Rigby is a sad song by the Beatles that could make you sad. And Yellow Submarine is a happy song!

Levi- If a person is listening to something bad, they might feel worse.

Autumn- If you are depressed and you don't know what to do, you could listen to Kelly Clarkson or soulful music to make you feel better.

In my opinion, Yes I really think it depends on the type of music you're listening to . If you are listening to a happy song, it will put you in a good mood. in the begining music created the depression in those who listened to it. this caused them to return to the music and think it helped with their depression. music is like a drug. when you listen to it so much you create a dependance on it and therefore when you are not on it you feel depressed. there are not any physical ways to see it affecting you but it is all mental. it is one of those things that help aspiring muscians. the listners get sepressed from listening and turn back to get better and never leave.

Music definitly affects the mind but it depends on what type your listining to. Somtimes it depends on the mood a person is in. If your in a bad mood and you listin to bad music with bad words in them, it can make you in an even worse mood. The same concept applys with the beat of the music. If the music has a low beat to it, your mood comes down, but if it has an uprising beat it brings up your spirits. Both ways, the songs can also affect your personality. They might tell you how to dress, how to talk, how to act, and it results in both good and bad.

Music was created based on feelings of the artist, i feel music can be similar to the way we talk to one another. If someone is sad, you may feel sad. If someone is mad you may feel mad. I feel if you listen to Sad music you will also feel sad. I listen to slow music when im sad because i feel like i can relate to the lyrics but when im happy i bring out the techno. The time and situation plays along with it too of course.

Honestly, i think it depends ont he genre of music
example: up beat, rock/pop music will have a positive effect
as opposed to a slow, emotional songwhich could Lead to a short period of sadness
also the meaning of the song has the same effect and rules

personally i listen to music as my escape so i don't think it poses a health risk, also reading is my escape so i dont think that either have a roll in teenage deprssion, because a teen can blare music or read like a maniac when depressed it all depends on the person.

I think that it most definitely depends on WHAT music you listen to! If you listen to nothing but loud rap or rock with foul language, I sure do think it will bring you down.

I for one do listen to a lot of music and it is usually to boost my spirits. I listen to things that are uplifting, though, like up-beat, fun, or even some spiritual, which DO help.

Some music could be a risk of depression. But it all depends on what you listen to. You can control what you listen to. I think that TV would have a higher risk of depression, not music. Most people love music, and look they are not depressed. Because with music all you do is hear the message, with TV you see the message. Besides, who could just sit there for 4-5 hours and listen to that many songs. I can't listen to music for more than 2 hours, at the most. My opinion is that it depends on what kind of music you listen to.

Personally, i don't think the study was very accurate, it the indevidual because i listen to 6 or 7 hours of music and i'm not deperssed, music makes me happy. Plus there were a lot of things that wern't taken into account dring the study, like if the music they listen to was depressing or sad, and what was going on in the kids life at that time, or maybe the reason they listen to so much music, is because they don't have any friends or have nothing better to do, thats a big factor of depresstion and is really sad.

I like to listen to music, it cheers me up. It makes you think, "There's someone out there who's in the same situation as me." I think people judge music too harshly, depression comes on its own for some people. Music gives us a chance to think about things and look at things in another point of view.

I think it really depends on the type of music you listen to. Yes, if you listen to sad, depressing music then it can bring your mood down but if you listen to bright, cheerful music then it would make you happy. Also the words in the song can effect you. The song can have a happy mood but if the word make you feel bad then it would be making you depressed.

Listening to music can great stress relief. But some types of music appeals to certain groups. It can be in the person's personality to listen to music for long period of time. As long as their parents can distinguish a "Natural Music Personality" that music is a big part of their child's life, I don't think anyone should be concerned.

I believe that music is a good way for someone to express themselves or escape from the world and relax. Most kids like listening to music for fun , and it is fun. But music can also be bad for you, if you listen to the wrong type of music. Music with positive lyrics and a happy tune will most likely brighten your mood. Songs with lyrics that tear you down and have a depressing tune are likely to make you unhappy.

When you listen to music, it can actually help you feel more "happy."
Sometimes when people say that music makes them feel sad, well it depends on what kind of music you listen to. When you listen to it when your mad however, it often makes you madder, if it is not positive music.

I think listening to music is very relaxing but it doesn't ever make me feel depressed. I think listening to music is actually pretty comforting. I also think it depends a lot on the type of music you listen to. For example if you listen to songs about break-ups and things like that then it will have a different effect on you if you listened to music about love and happiness. So overall I think that the type of music plays a big role in whether it will depress you.

Music can vary on weather a kid will get depressed or not at certain times. It all depends on the type of music you listen to. Myself personally, listen to music that matches my mood. Blues music when I'm a bit depressed or lighter music when I'm in a good mood. If kids only listen to depressing music, that's their taste in music, and shouldn't be something that people tamper with.

i think music is all about the type you listen to, if you listen to up beat-good music, how can that bring you down?if you listen to sad, depressing music, its not going to make you feel good about yourself.i listen to music 97% of the time, while doing homework, cleaning my room, hanging out with friends, music just sets its own standars by which ever type of music you choose.personaily, its for the better, its what brings me up when im down.music is part of me! ❤

If they think people are sad because they listen to music then they are wrong. It's people who were already sad to begin with and they think it's because of music. Adults need something to blame when their child isn't perfect and music, games and televison are easy targets when really it could be the parents fault or something else. Either that or this study is propaganda to get us to read more.

I listen to music for about 10-30 minutes on days I'm sad, but if I'm in a good mood I listen to 20-40 mintues becasue music cheers me up! I listen to it wherever, while reading, writing, or relaxing.
I don't listen to depressing sad music, it just makes me upset and sad.

I think that if you can use music in a good way then it doesn't bother you. Music does NOT cause depression, but I can see why some parents think so because maybe the parents want the children to do chores instead of listening to the music all the time. Although, music is good for the soul.

I think That music is helpful to people. I am a Christain and listening to

Music has always been there as a source of pleasure and comfort. Unfortunately, with the increase in technology, people have begun to rely too heavily on music to help them deal with situations or to lift their mood. This unhealthy dependency may be costing them their mental health.

When i listen to music it helps me concentrate more. It doesn't always affect my mood... unless l end up listening to my favorite song when i hit shuffle on my ipod or I Turn on my radio at the right time. Music has always helped my get my feeling out, lift a lot of weight of my shoulders. i think it can be better for some... maybe not so good for others.

I think that listning to alot of music isn't a bad thing, I just think it is good to express how you feel inside. It is alone time for yourself to calm down. I have a friend who listens to WAY more than 4 hours of music a day, and she is just fine, not depressed! My Geography teacher always listen to music in class!

    April 14, 2011 at 5:47 pm |
  250. Ohma

Personaly, I think that listning to to much music is not good for you! You dont comunicate with people, and you dont talk about how you feel. My teacher dosn't alow my class to listen to our iPods in class because then we dont pay attention, and you go into your own "little world". I think that us kids should have better things to do then be by yourself and your music divice!!!!!

I think that music can only effect your mood or personality when you listen to wrong kinds of it. Sometimes, I use music to help me be in a better mood, or just to relax me. My History teacher plays music in class, which helps me focus on my work and clear my mind of any other distractions. It all depends what kind of music you are listening to.

    April 14, 2011 at 6:16 pm |
  252. Ashley!

when your depressed, you really don't feel like listening to music, depending on the song, if its a song that has lyrics how you feel makes you feel a little better. it depends on how i feel when im depressed i don't feel like listening to much music, when its a song that touches me and if its the song thats lyrics sound like how im feeling makes me feel sometimes better. like when i feel down i listen to a certain song that i always listening to. But i think listening to music is not a bad thing.

    April 14, 2011 at 6:33 pm |
  253. Nick

Well, I would think it depends on the type of music you listen to. If you listen to rap or country or hip hop... pretty much anything upbeat you shouldn't become depressed. However, if you listen to like dreary orchestra music I can see where you would. Music cheers me up, Why would you listen to something depressing. Emphasis on cheers me up, that means I sometimes feel bad before I listen and others do to. It's not the music!!!

    April 14, 2011 at 6:54 pm |
  254. Michael

I think that it really depends on the type of music your listening to. Happy, inspiring music can make you self confident and feel self worth. But if your listening to jazz or maybe even slow rock, you get the deep vibe of saddness and somewhat slowness. You can't just pin point high school teens who listen to rock then middle school teens who listen to katy Perry!

    April 14, 2011 at 7:01 pm |
  255. Charlotte

I think that it is the type of music that teens listen to. The music that is coming out lately are filled with cussing and other things that adults would know and not kids. Music that is somewhat older actually cheers you up while the music now makes kids feel bad because it involves taking drugs and drinking alchoholic beverages and everyone knows that those stuff are bad.

Music has not been a problem for anybody that I know of, I know someone who listens to music in my class and they don't have anything wrong with them.Does not seem wrong with me

I truly do believe it certainly depends on who you are, what kind of music you listen to, and the timing of it.

For example, if you... let's say, fail a test, then go home, and play some sad songs. As if you weren't already down enough, the music might bring you down more. Others, it helps.

It's a self pity thing. Boo-hoo, I'm sad. *listens to sad music* Then, after that, you usually feel different, because it helped you get something off your chest without you having to do anything.

It helps take a lot of things off my mind, and somehow cleanses me. I listen to music two hours in the morning, and up until I go to sleep, I still have my iPod plugged in. Even when I go to sleep, I have some radio station on playing constant music to help me.

You can't base the entire teenage population off of just a few subjects in a survey. I believe, that a good portion of the teen population would say that it depends on who you are, when you listen to it, and what kind of music you listen to.

Music is helpful to me. I go to music for everything, even when doing my homework. I don't understand how a beat and lyrics could be harmful to someone.

First of all I think that listining to 4 hours of music a day is crazy but it depends on the type of music that you are listining to because if it is happy music then maybe it will influence the way that you are thinking. Also I think that if you are listining to 4 hours of music a day then for four or more hours of the day you are not in on what is around you so you are limited to only what is in your own head which may lead to some forms of depression because you are so secluded from the rest of the world.

I think that music can help you think and concentrate. My teacher plays classical music for us when we are creative writing and it helps me focus and stay concentrated. It is not the amount of music that is harmful, but the type of music that is harmful

My class and I have discusted this topic and have came up with many differet answers. Some of us say that is is a good thing because it can make you think about the answers as the lyrics of the songs. This will help kids study. Others think it is bad becuase it will bring out the emotion that they have stressed through the day. They think this will put grades in an all time low but i have done an experiment with this and it acually brings grades up. I think Music is a good thing to help kids study !!!

I think people are taking this out of proportion. Music is how many people express themselves, if your mad, music is how you can express that anger without disrupting others. Go home and sing a song that screams alot with very angry lyrics and that helps you relieve your stress. Music is supposed to relate to kids and how they feel, i am a guitarist in a heavy metal band and i think music has changed me so much is the past few months, and i like who i am much better now than i was before. It only makes you depressed if you take it like that. You can have the most positive song in the world and if taken the wrong way, it could cause depression.

  264. Addison

Maybe it's depends the music they're listening to, like sad songs or songs that have cussing in them. Or it could be the way you feel or what happened to you. Listening to happy, upbeat songs actually soothes me. I guess it just depends what type of person you are.

    April 14, 2011 at 10:22 pm |
  265. Alexander

I can see it going both ways. If someone just got dumped, and they hear a song about getting dumped, it'll make them more sad then happy. But if someone just got dumped, and heard a beach party song, that would probably cheer them up with the fast pace and the good beat. So this subject depends on what mood they are in, and what kind of song they listen to in that mood.

Music changes lives, it has been proven to be a powerful aspect in people's daily routines. I listen to music when I'm sad, not to bring me down but to simply find something to relate to. There are a lot of harmful things in the world, but treating music as if it's a harmful drug doesn't seem right.

    April 14, 2011 at 10:29 pm |
  267. Ikeya

I don't support the idea that listening to a lot of music is harmful. In fact, many people, particularly young people, are eager to listen to (pop)music
.You can see people in the train or on the streets enjoy listening to music with an ipod in their hands. If a lot of music does any harm, it means that a number of people already have depression or something like that. It seems a little ridiculous.

In my opinion, music can be like fire, light or dark, depending on what it is, but more importantly, how it is used. I suffer from depression big time. Often, slow, flowing music helps me to calm down. If one wants to calm down, most types of music may help them, but only if that is what they wish. However, listening to one type of music for hours on end, and though you may not think it, it can have a negative effect on the brain. Remember, let moderation be your guide.

I listen to music when im down. Especially if im mad. I mean, It's better than going off and punching a whole in the wall. When I listen to music, it makes me listen and think about the lyrics and comforts me and makes me feel to where I'm not alone. I believe music is far more helpful than harmful.

The mood of the music you listen to is a huge factor in how you feel when you listen to it. If you are feeling down and listen to a happy and up-beat song, you spirits will tend to lift a little. Also, if you listen to a slow song with melancholy lyrics, you might start feeling a little blue. Music is a huge factor in how you feel, but remember, it all depends on the song you are listening to.

While this study claimed that teens are more likely to become depressed when listening to "overdoses" of music, it never specified what type of music it is that these teens in the study were listening to. I believe there is a time and a place for different types of music. It may be that these teens in the study were listening to depressing music! When I'm down, I try to listen to something more upbeat, not something that's going make me feel even worse about my situation, and it works!

Well i read books and listen to music both. i feel like way too many of us students listen to music all the time. my sister always listen to music and her emotions are kinda depressed but i on the other hand feel fine. i can listen up to an 1 hor or so. i know it may be diffrent for other students but i feel we should cut the time we listen to music and spend half the time reading books.

I think that the type of music you listen to can depend on your mood. Some people listen to rock and it can make them mad or others that love rock it may make them happy. I think that it all depends on the person because every one is different. Maybe some of these people are depressed for completly different reasons. I don't know that music has anything to do with these peoples depression. If the music has anything to do with there depression then it more than likely has to do with the type of music.

From what i think... i think music can be helpful and harmful to many diffrent people. To some people music can be helpful by them taking out thier emotions and make them feel better when they are down. Also to some other people it can be harmful because it can remember them of there brake up or somethng related to that but it also depends to what music you play.

i believe that depending on the person, the song, and the situation music can be both helpful and harmful. when i listen to music, i try and find songs that relate to the situations i'm going through. to some people doing this could just make them feel worse if they already do. but it can also make them feel even happier if the situation is a joyful thing.

I think that music is for the better because it helps some people like myself, get over hard things or it make us feel happy when we are down or something like that. If we didn't have music, can you imagine how boring things would be? I sure couldn't and I wouldn't want to. So in my opinion, MUSIC IS FOR THE BEST!

I think that is not true I listen to music all the time sometimes it makes me sad but a lot more of times I get really happy listening to my music. I really enjoy listening to my music and so do lot of other people I mean it really depends on the music you listen to to make you happy or sad. 🙂

I listen to music all the time. but i listen to music alot more when i feel down to make me feel a littlle better. but it alwasy depends on the situation, the time, the person, and why they are feeling down. this study is going to be almost impossible to get a legit result because each person is different and each situation is different, so this study is impossible to do and will never get a real result.

listening to music can be very helpful. It does depend on the type of music though. I listen to classical music and that always help me calm down and focus on the beauty of life. he music that makes life seem miserable and that you have no hope is the kind of music the increases the problem. i noticed one time that i could start listening to depressing music while in a happy mood and by the time the song is over i would be depressed. Music can influence your emotions.

Depending on the mood a person is in will tell what kind of music they are listening to. Usually music can help people concentrate and if a person is listening to sad music while in a depressed mood it is their own fault. They are making themselves more depressed by the music they are listening to.

    April 15, 2011 at 12:34 pm |
  283. Michaila

Music is everything to me- I play 3 musical instruments and I constantly listen to music when I'm not playing it. Right now I'm listening to Vivaldi because it helps me concentrate. When my brothers bother me, I know that I can tune them out with music. When I'm stressed or upset or whatever, I can go play. I honestly can come to school in a horrible mood and go to band, and within an hour, I'm my usual happy, hyper self, especially if we play an upbeat song.

I can see how if a person were depressed, they would listen to more music to make them feel better, but it's not the music they're listening to that should cause them to be depressed, unless they listen to bad music.

    April 15, 2011 at 12:41 pm |
  284. Heather

I play music that reflexs my mood, whether I am happy or sad. The songs I choose usually help me to overcome any sad moments I have. I even created a depression playlist that starts off with the saddest and depressing songs first slowly gradually climbing the scale to the more happier energetic songs to improve my mood. I listen to music constantly and it helps me put life into perspective.

I think that music can cheer kids up and can upset them more. It all depends on the type of music they listen to. If when they are upset they listen to sad music then yes it may upset them more. But if they are upset and listen to happy up beat music then they would probably be in a better mood.

    April 15, 2011 at 2:48 pm |

I think music can be helpful OR harmful. i mean it depends on what song you listen to. If your depressed and you listen to a song that was lets say sung at your dad's funeral. Its gonna make you more upset. But if you listened to a song you and your best friend have happy memories with it will cheer you up. Honestly when im upset i listen to songs about people who have it worse. Then i realize im lucky and it makes me feel better.

It depends on the type of music your listening to and how you are feeling right then and there. I know when I'm sad I listen to fast and fun songs like rock and hip-hop, and then when I'm happy or too excited I listen to slow songs like country. I am always listening to music. When ever there is a chance to listen to the music I will jump to the chance. I love music no matter what I'm feeling like. They only thing I can't stand is the really bad raps. Like when you can't understand what they are saying. Otherwise I listen to any type of music.

    April 15, 2011 at 2:50 pm |
  288. Amanda

I listen to music all the time. It helps me feel better depending on the song. Most country and pop songs make me happy but others make me mad or sad. Most kids do listen to music a lot but that's not a way i think that you get depression. Reading is what makes me sad. But i do understand why people would be concerned. I listen to music about 3 hours everyday.

    April 15, 2011 at 6:49 pm |
  289. Noelle

It depends on the kind of music listened to. For example, if someone is listening to Bach or Mozart they are less likely to be depressed by music than by some more current artists. However, I think that music has little or no role in depression.

I don't think that listening to music causes depression, it just expresses who you are. if you are feeling down, music can bring your attitude around and make you feel better. My friend and I will listen to music in class when we aren't doing anything, music just describes your style and who you are.

    April 15, 2011 at 9:30 pm |
  292. Jason

To me, i love listening to music that are my favorites. I think that some artists who make up the songs that involve drugs and alcohol are influencing kids to do that too and it isn't good for them. It depends on what music they listen to and for how long.

    April 16, 2011 at 4:08 pm |
  293. Jenny

I think that listening to music for hours at a time can be helpful in some cases and harmful in others. I really think it depends on the type of music you are listening to and whether you are busy doing something else while you are listening to music. I think it can be harmful if you are listening to very emotional music that sounds depressing and you are just lying there on your bed doing nothing.

    April 16, 2011 at 4:20 pm |

I think that if people are depressed they tend to listen to more music than anything eles because the music tends to be their voice about what they feel about and comforts them when they are depressed.
I also think that music isn't a bad thing because some teen listen to music way more than 4 hours and are just fine. Some people listen to music because they diontt like their life so they think thats the only way to become calm.

I beleive that music helps me when im depressed. i tend to listen to happy songs when im depressed. but every once in a while ill listen to a sad song that reminds me that life isnt all butterflies and ponies. its about getting through the storm and dancing in the rain. i dont know who first said the storm thing, but im glad they did. because that helps alot.

Music is always there for people, esspecially teens to express any and all emotions or feelings. Scientists may have the wrong idea for musical culture today. Many average teens from the age 13-18 may like differant music than an average 40-60 year old.

    April 16, 2011 at 7:20 pm |

Music helps me a lot with any of my emotions, not just depression. Depending on the song or genre, it can get me in a bad mood. Something sad can bring anyone down obviously. I doubt that if someone is listening to a decent song it will dampen their mood. Basically, teens will listen to music for a variety of reasons: to feel better, to know that someone can relate to them, or just for fun. But they won't listen to it to make themselves depressed. Even teenagers aren't that dumb.

    April 16, 2011 at 8:25 pm |

The timing is what does it for me. If I'm already really happy, music makes me even more happy. But if I'm not doing much, or already upset, I feel like it can actually make me more depressed.

Any type of media could both help and hurt people. In this case music can help if you are depressed to start with. For me when I'm depressed I listen to sad songs and I feel better, however if I ever feel more depressed by it I switch to a happier song. For other people it may make them more depressed but it mainly has to do with the type of life they have and how impressionable they are.

I think that when teens are sad, they tend to listen to a song that they can relate to. This might make them think more about it, which worsens their sadness. I don't, however, think that music can cause depression, only worsen or even relieve it.

I would say music can be both cause I have thought about what would happen if someone killed themselves and relatives sue a band or record company because of lyrics they used, and those lyrics was what the suicide-person were listening to the most or before they did it. But music can also be what stops people from doing that because music, or even a simple song, can turn a day around for someone.

I believe that what ever goes in comes out- if a teenage is listening to depressing music then sure they are going to be depressed, but if you are listening to upbeat happy music then i think that you are going to be a lot more happy and upbeat. It all depends on the music.

I think music is a good way to express my feelings. No matter when I am happy or depressed, and I don't want to share my emotions with anyone,I could listen to music.Following the rhythms to shout,I feel relaxed.

it is all about music and timing because some musics were meant to bring you down but others were made to cheer you up

I, personally, listen to music almost 24/7. I mostly listen when I'm bored and it almost always brings my mood up. If I'm ever sad or down, listening to my favorite song will automatically make me happy because I'm hearing something that I like. I've noticed that I don't get sad anymore because I've been listening to so much music. Of course, it's music that I like. I do think that when you listen to music that you don't like, or maybe even hate, will make you sad or even frustrated.

Listening to alot of music is what teens do these days but if it could effect you then we should band somwe of the music players like mp3 players and ipods and all of the good stuff that they have for us to listen to music on.

I don't find at as a problem, but it depends what type of music is teens listening to. When i feel down, I listen to music that talks about my feelings. From there, I feel like if the singer understands me, so it helps, a lot. Then if I listening to music thats so depressing, that the singer put so much emotions in it. I feel what the singer feels, and instead of putting it on my mind, i begin to cry. It depends, on how teens are when they listen to these types of music. If they could handle the depression or not.

It is more helpful in my opinion. Especially if you go through a breakup songs would cheer you up. Music doesn't get you in a bad mood it boosts your confidence if anything. so in the end music is healthy for you.

I literally listen to music whenever I am in my room all the time. So I must get over 4-5 hours of music a day, right? I listen to country music mostly. I usually listen to music that suits my mood. So if I am already a little down, music brings me a little bit more down. If I am happy or hyper, then music will make me even happier. Music helps me cope with my feeling because I am very expressive through my music.
