Safety | Sportsmanship

Check out the sport story in Tuesday's show. The football game between St. George's School and Lawrence Academy never kicked off. But here's where you can sound off: Was St. George's right to forfeit the game in the name of safety? Or should they have taken the challenge in the name of sportsmanship?

i think that it depends on weather or not they just didnt want to play or if they were not up for the challenge and it was ok that hey forfited its not like they quit moe like they were looking out for there safety.

I think it was the right thing to forfeit because if it's because of safety that's not good to hurt someone anyways

I think that it was a good choice to forfiet because nobody wants to be injured. I don't know if te team was afraid of the competition or getting injured. Either way they had a choice and they just decided to forfeit.

I think saftey comes first but they have a chance to win because everybody is a good team they should have just tried to win not just back down

Yeah people need to be safe.and it think that he did the right thing.he was thinking of there safety that's why and I don't blame him for that

I tthink they should have the choice of forfiting but of it was me I would have kept playing and not copmling about my injuries. I think that every one gets there own choice. I don't think that people should not be forced to cplete the task at hand, but it annoys me if you don't cplete the task

I think that they should of played the game because they could of still had some fun no matter what happened in the game they would of played.

I think its good to forfeit over safety because if you don't people can become severely injured

I don't think they should have forfited because it just teaches that group of kids to quit when things look hard and it's not a good example

I believe they do have that right to forfeit for safety purposes. ( safety is top priority), but they do need to consider their meaning of safety, do they mean we are less experienced and so that makes it unsafe or these guys have broken two other peoples arms in a tackle.

I think that it was right not to play the football game. Safety should always come first. After all, if someone gets hurt that could have a life long effect.

I believe that the team had the right to forfeit because the safety of the players comes first because without safety we would not ha e those players!

I think it's kinda both. well It wasn't showing very good sportsmanship but it also does make sense what he did. I mean if they're bigger than you and weigh heavier than you then they can crush you which would break something so i think it's both.

Forfeiting because you are frightened isn't in the true sport of football. Schools should set an example for their students that you can't quit.

Saftey Should come first. No one should have to get hurt. Then would have to sit out most if not all of the season. But, they do sound like wusses to forfeit.

safety is a good but if you want to be the best you got to play the best

Ibelieve the school made a wrong decision to not play in the game. The school is telling the players if you don't think you can do something in life you should give up. This is a bad lesson that won't help the players in the future. I know that the school is concered about saftey but they needed to let players play the game. There are upsets all the time.

i think they should have definatly taken the challenge in the name of sportsmanship. they should have challenged themselves and who knows? they might have won...

    October 11, 2010 at 8:49 pm |
  12. Kayleigh

I do think that safety should come first, but then it teaches the players to give up when something seems impossible. They should have let them play

I think they should've taken the challenge. but also, some others could have been hurt. so theres really no good or right answer

    October 11, 2010 at 9:11 pm |
  15. Cait

It was smart of them to forfeit the game for safety. Though sportsmapship is a good thing, they probably wanted the better for their team. I would chose that, too.

safety is important but you also have to have good sportsmanship to be a good player

they shouldve played the game. it isnt juust about safety trust me i would now but the did not sow any sportsmanship what so ever

I think it was safety because you don't want your players hurt for the season, also the parents might complain the players are to rough for their kids.

    October 11, 2010 at 9:18 pm |
  19. Kyle

I think that sportsmanship is great but safety is more important because it could effect the players for the rest of their lives and plus I'm sure that one forfeit wont teach them to give up in life.

    – I think he made the right desicion by thinking of the students and they're safety, people can be seriously injured during football.

It is all ok but think they should let them keep playing in the game.

    October 11, 2010 at 9:45 pm |
  23. Angie

That must have been a hard decision to forfeit or not. Obviously, schools should be worried about the student's well being, and safety, however, this is football. You are going to get tackled, and maybe get a little hurt. That injury may be a temporary, physical bruise, but the school just give up without trying showed those students that its ok to just give up and not try anything that may seem hard for the rest of their lives. I would say that the School should not have done what they had done. They should've taken a risk, and gave it their all. Win or lose, they would've still somehow won some kind of life lesson :D.

    October 11, 2010 at 9:49 pm |
  24. Kaitlyn

I think it was nice to put the players' safety first but it is kind of telling them that you can just quit when something's hard. They should take a vote on what the parents and the players think instead of just the headmaster.

    October 11, 2010 at 9:52 pm |
  25. Jeremiah

i don't think anyone should forfeit any game. it ruins sportsmanship, fun, and just the reason for being there.

    October 11, 2010 at 9:52 pm |
  26. Andrew

I think the High Schools were more focused on their winning streak instead of the players safety, they should have played the game because it can teach the kids to give up against challenges big or small.

    October 11, 2010 at 9:53 pm |
  27. Mack

Id go with sportsmanship because they're all just there to play football. just because their big doesnt mean they're good.

    October 11, 2010 at 10:06 pm |
  28. Ed

I believe that he school should've participated in the game. By not doing so, they're telling their players that if you meet an obstacle in life that you cannot over come you simply quit. This really sends out a bad message for all the kids in the school.

    October 11, 2010 at 10:09 pm |
  29. Emma

I think its dumb that they forfeited and did not even play the game! You never know they just might be good enough to beat them, but even if they were not and the other players were big I think that the teachers at that school are sending a bad message, one that says if something seems to hard just give up without even trying.

they did what they wated to,they wanted to be safe, but not all the time people get hurt.

I think it was right for the coach to forfeit because he's only trying to protect his playes and pervent injuries.

  32. cassandra

it is important to be safe than to to be sport person because if your sport but your not safe you will not enjoy your game because you don't know how to be safe in anything. You need to know how to be safe first before you play the game you want.

    October 11, 2010 at 11:05 pm |
  33. Kendra

They should have taken the challenge because if any other safety issues were to have come later in to the game, they could have gave it their all or try to forfeit later in the game.

    October 11, 2010 at 11:17 pm |
  34. Cash

If you don't want to get hurt don't play football. Give the players a chance to to go above and beyond there expectations.

For me, I will choose being safe in sports because if I'm not safe I might lose the game.

If these players are in the same age range ,then it is not propriate for St. George's School to forfeit the game. Different size players in a team is common to see. Maybe the smaller one can knock down the stronger one.

    October 12, 2010 at 12:20 am |
  37. Amanda

The headmaster just should've let the players choose if they wanted to play the game or not.

    October 12, 2010 at 12:58 am |
  38. Cynthia

I feel sorry for thoes boys who cannot go to the field to play. The headmaster at St. George's Academy may miss the point about protecting children. If you keep those kids in a cage, how can they survive in the jungle when the day they have to leave the cage comes?
Of course safety is the first priority, but shouldn't it the responsibility of teachers to teach children how to protect themselves in a tough situation?

    October 12, 2010 at 12:58 am |
  39. jasmine

Football players risk getting injured everytime they set foot out onto the field. And if your not willing to play just because the opposing team is bigger than you, well that makes you a wimp. The coach should have let them play, he isn't teaching them anything and by letting them forfeit he's basically saying that he didn't think that they would even have a chance in beating the team.

There is always 'However or But' in our lives. who knows which team can win? people just guess based on teams' career. Even if one of the teams loses, there can be many lessons to learn from the failure.

  41. jessie

there is all ways a risk of getting hurt with any sport, and anyone who plays sports know that at their own risk. it is the coachs and teachers and who ever is training them job is to prepare them so they won't get hurt

    October 12, 2010 at 2:21 am |
  42. Jimi

I think that the decision made by the coach could go either way. " If I was a coach, i would most certainly be worried about the student players, but i will only forfeit the game if I notice that something has gone wrong." I would of at least try to win no-matter what.

    October 12, 2010 at 5:27 am |
  43. Bob

Not only does it tell the players that when they encounter a seemingly impossible to solve problem, it also tells them that they are not good enough to play the other team.

    October 12, 2010 at 5:30 am |
  44. V'Aira

No, I don't think it was right for them to forfiet the game because football is a very aggresive and dangerous sport and getting hurt is the risk of playing the sport.

    October 12, 2010 at 7:50 am |
  45. Shun

If you fear your students are going to get injured every time they play a sport, you might as well just remove the entire sports program.

    October 12, 2010 at 8:20 am |
  46. Kang

I wonder how the players at St.George thought about that decision. Did they say yes or no at the chairman's decision? If they had said yes, the game should have kicked off.

I feel that the kids should make the call as to play or not play

    October 12, 2010 at 8:30 am |
  48. Burnie

I think it's wrong for the kids not to play the game because playing teams where the players are bigger is a part of football.

    October 12, 2010 at 8:34 am |
  49. Brandon

i think that it's wrong that the players had to forfeit the game just because the other players were bigger. i think if the players want to play they should be able to play. it's their choice.

    October 12, 2010 at 8:36 am |
  50. william

I think that the players should be giving a challenge, because that's what football is all about. I also think that the kids should play just for the fun of it.

    October 12, 2010 at 8:40 am |
  51. Anastazja

I think maybe the stronger team could promise not to make it tough. I don't really think that they had to quit, though. Aren't games supposed to be fun? I think that quitting is unsportsmanlike conduct.

    October 12, 2010 at 8:50 am |
  52. Becca

I do not think the players should have given up because that is saying to the players when life gets tough, give up and take the easy way ot and do not rough it. I think they should have at least given it a try. Hey, who knows the forfeiting team could have won. Two important thems; When life gets tough, rough it and do not judge a person by the way it looks.

    October 12, 2010 at 9:04 am |
  53. Thomas

We think it's unfair to both teams, because they practice hard and look forward to the next game. It is not the position of the headmaster to make these choices for the football team. Don't jugde a team's strength by their size.

    October 12, 2010 at 9:06 am |
  54. stephen

Football is a sport were there is going to be injuries. If you do not like it, dont even let your kid play, but don't forfiet.Forfieting just makes your school look weak.

    October 12, 2010 at 9:16 am |
  55. Annette

What a bunch of baloney!! If the opposing team were to suceed at the game, that would have been a huge milestone that they were able to have beat a team better than them. This is bad sportsmanship all around!!

    October 12, 2010 at 9:18 am |
  56. Eric

I feel that safety should always come first in any situation involving one's well-being. Therefore, we must not force the students to compete in a challange that could cause them great physical harm.

    October 12, 2010 at 9:19 am |
  57. Zak

I would forfit, I think that safty is always first priority, I would make the same choice.

    October 12, 2010 at 9:20 am |
  58. Ryan

I agree with the principal that he should forfeit because of safety. But sometime you have to play things out even if its hard otherwise it tells the team that if your faced with something hard just quit.

    October 12, 2010 at 9:29 am |
  59. Mr. E's Class

My class felt it was sportsmanship. They said that the players new the risks when they signed up for the sport. It's not fair to take the games away from the other schools

    October 12, 2010 at 9:31 am |
  60. dede

I think that they should have played .Their tell them that when the going gets though runaway

    October 12, 2010 at 9:32 am |
  61. jacob

i think it is unsportsmanlike to call off a game just because the other team is bigger. it ruins the fun of the game, they might have even won.

    October 12, 2010 at 9:33 am |
  62. Matthew

Yes I think they should forfeit the game, because it is my opinion that football is a dangerous sport and you can get seriously injured even when the teams are evenly matched.

    October 12, 2010 at 9:33 am |
  63. david

    It's wrong sad and badnews

    October 12, 2010 at 9:40 am |
  64. Kaylee

I think you should let the players play. Now the team sounds like an easy team to beat. Their HeadMaster, might think he made a good choice, maybe for him, but now the players probably think that they can't beat bigger teams. Now, they won't know what they can and can't do.

    October 12, 2010 at 9:40 am |
  65. braeden

if i was a coach i would make safety a priority

    October 12, 2010 at 9:41 am |
  66. Anna

I think they should have at least tried to play them, and if their players were getting badly hurt they could have forfeited then.

    October 12, 2010 at 9:41 am |
  67. Dani

I think that they were half right to forfiet the game for safety rather than some one getting hurt. Although forfieting a game because "They are to good." It just sounds so strange.

    October 12, 2010 at 9:41 am |
  68. Rachel

I would put safety frist. I would not want to hurt myself just to win a game. I would rather give up and not get injured for life.I think it was good they gave up, I am glad they forfeited or they would be really hurt,
    Not like they are now.

    October 12, 2010 at 9:41 am |

well if it was for saftey i would but if it wasn't i wouldn't because i wouldn't want to be known as a quitter!!!

  71. nate

i think they should just keep the football team beacause kids are try to get a career and have somebody write them and say come on to us to play for us

    October 12, 2010 at 10:07 am |
  72. michael

I think its messed up that they forfeit the game just because the other team was to big. thats like said life is hard and to give up.

    October 12, 2010 at 10:11 am |
  73. Ellie

I agree with what was said in Tuesdays addition, forfeiting the game sends the wrong message to students. It suggests that whenever there is a problem in life and we are faced with adversity that we should give up. I understand that the St.George school administrators felt that they needed to protect their student/athletes from being injured, but they could be injured in any one of their season games. In my opinion it was very unsportsman like.

    October 12, 2010 at 10:19 am |
  74. Zach

I think they should have played. It doesn’t matter if they are big and good, you can go in there and play with confidence and pull off an upset. There are teams that are getting beat 70 to 6 but they still play for the name on their jersey and for fun.

    October 12, 2010 at 10:21 am |
  75. Aubree

When students decide to play football, it usually means they want to PLAY. If all coaches got to pick and choose what games they played, they wouldn't ever end up playing. I would be livid if my coach pulled us from a game just because he didnt have enough confidence in us

    October 12, 2010 at 10:23 am |
  76. Matty

i think forfeit is morally wrong

    October 12, 2010 at 10:25 am |
  77. Helga

If you are scared by the possibility of defeat, then you don't deserve to play. St. George's football team just proved they don't have what it takes to be a good team, by not playing this game they proved they should not play at all.

    October 12, 2010 at 10:25 am |
  78. Sean

I feel like if you back away from a challenge you don't have that much self esteem. When you are undefeated you should want to prove yourself to the other people that you are worthy enough to beat them.

    October 12, 2010 at 10:27 am |
  79. Bernard

Thats not right for the team that worked this far to finally prove themselves. Its not fair to the kids, who wants to go through life like a quitter

    'NOT I SAID THE CAT."

    October 12, 2010 at 10:31 am |
  80. Greg

with the school doing that it teachs the students that when the going gets tough, just quit, they should have just let the kids play the game and have fun and see what happens, you never know the other team might have ended up having an off game that day.

    October 12, 2010 at 10:32 am |

Size should not be a factor

    October 12, 2010 at 10:35 am |

I beleve that if the administrator called off the football game, that means that he DOES NOT have confidence in his team. If he did, he would of let them play and if they won or lost he would of been proud of them 🙂

    October 12, 2010 at 10:38 am |
  83. Stephen

IT's hard for any football player to give up a game so why should sioze matter please tell me

    October 12, 2010 at 10:41 am |
  84. kaleb

This is wrong because not only did they forfeit they taught there students that when there is an obstacle you should give up instead of overcoming it

    October 12, 2010 at 10:43 am |
  85. Mark

This was an opportunity lost by both coaches. The big bad team could have started their reserves, even 3rd string which puts them in a position to play when it really counts. The poor helpless team could have focused their goals on things possibly attainable. Coaches should have communicated with each other with respect.

    October 12, 2010 at 10:45 am |
  86. dean

....I say that they shold not forfit becaues that is the life of football even if they are bigger then you..... Then why did there parents or your self sign up for the game?

    October 12, 2010 at 10:46 am |
  87. cruz

Knowing, forfeiting the game was a mistake teaching these kids when times get too hard or rough always to run

  88. Isaac

if people really thought about the future and the possibility that a person will have an experience such as this, one where one side appears to be bigger/better than the other, they might realise the stupidity in not learning that size isn't what counts. sometimes, winning is just making the point that you aren't afraid of someone bigger than you and that your still going to stand up for yourself.

    October 12, 2010 at 10:48 am |
  89. Lyn & class

We can't judge without more information. Was it really more dangerous to play them than any other team? Did the players want to forfeit? It seems like they should have played, but they have the right to forfeit.

    October 12, 2010 at 10:51 am |
  90. Robert

They probably should have taken it in sportmanship. I say this because if you take it in sportsmanship, it will show that you actually want to play the sport, instead of putting it off to where you show that you don't like the sport.

    October 12, 2010 at 10:52 am |
  91. Molly

I think it was very unprofessional to forfeit the game because the players were 'to good to play'. As a football player, you ACCEPT the fact that yeah, you might get hurt. Also, it's not fair the the players from Lawrence Academy because they couldn't play, just because they are good at it.

    October 12, 2010 at 10:56 am |
  92. lara

If you're too afraid of being tackled by guys twice your size then why on earth are you playing football in the first place?! I say suck it up!

    October 12, 2010 at 10:57 am |
  93. fausto

they people their that say safety is first they are correct safety is first what happens if they get injured for the rest of their lives that will be bad.

    October 12, 2010 at 10:57 am |
  94. lara

Football, even if the guys are the same size as you, is a dangerous and no matter how big they are you have a chance of getting hurt.

I've seen that size doesn't matter when STATE OR CITY TEAMS play each other. Though I can understand why the headmaster was concerned.

If that happened to me , I would be so...devastaded . All my hard work gone to waste !

I think that the headmaster should not have forfitted the game. I was basicallly saying your team is not good enought. On the other hand they head master was only looking out for his team. He should have considers other peoples feelings before he did the things he did. 🙂 I personally think that they could have played a little bit if any one got seriously hurt then forfit.

    October 12, 2010 at 11:07 am |

he should let them play. even if they dont win then might find new stategies to win

I think that they should just play the football game because if you don't then it isn't any fun.

thats just a way for them to get publicity

I WOULD BE MAD BECAUSE WE GET BETTER BY PLAYING WITH THE BEST

    October 12, 2010 at 11:13 am |
  103. Nikki

I dont think that it was right fot them to do that because basically what they says is they dont believe in their team. That would just make the team feel bad about themselves because they wont feel like theyre good enough to beat a very good football team. If someone told me I couldnt do something because the other person was better I would be very offended and it would make me feel like they dont believe that what I can do isnt good enough.

    October 12, 2010 at 11:16 am |
  104. Dracut

I think, they should've played... Until one person got hurt, after that they should've quit. It should'nt be about winning/lossing, but that is what it seem's in this case.

    October 12, 2010 at 11:27 am |
  105. Gabe

The name of safety. We are playing football here, there is no safety. They had no right to forfeit. You never here about teams forfeiting because players are to big. I think they need to suck it up and play football. When you are playing football you are guaranteed to get hurt.

    October 12, 2010 at 11:30 am |
  106. Zak

I don't think so... everythings not about winning or losing, it's all about trying. And because of it, the other team will probably have the right to call them "baby's" for not playing the game...

    October 12, 2010 at 11:38 am |
  107. Ryleigh

I think that they should have played. If the team thought it was dangerous then they would have told the coach.

I think they should have played because playing against harder opponets makes you better. Look at our high school they play against harder teams and get killed but they still try and they will only ge better.

The sport is football that means theres goin to be compitition that has a greater size i would have played.

    October 12, 2010 at 11:52 am |
  113. Josh

I think by a football team not showing up to a game because the other team is bigger it shows that they all are a bunch of Sallys. It’s not always the size that matters even know they are bigger you could be faster which helps a lot in football. I also believe that by backing out of a game because you think the students will be hurt is letting them down, and teaching them to be quiters; which is unsportsmanship.

    October 12, 2010 at 11:53 am |
  114. sula

I think that they should have a chance to play, it is unfair to assume that they would loose! [even is it is a matter of safety]

  115. Seyvon

I think its pointless because I play football and im 5"2 and i go up againest kids bigger than me almost all the time I think they should play

    October 12, 2010 at 11:59 am |
  116. Enrique

I think that by choosing to forfeit the game early not only speaks of the coaches poor attitude, but sets the players up for failure in the future. They are being taught to quit when it looks tough. Why choose to fail when success is an option?

the school made the right choice

The school's football teams are trained to take heavy hits during a game, if not why do they go to practice everyday. The school did make a safe decision even though the school lost their undefeated streak.

I think that they should have played, after all what is football without a little danger???

    October 12, 2010 at 12:13 pm |
  122. kala

although saftey is a good reason to forfeit, why take an oppritunity away from your players to try, they cant show sportsmanship if they dont try

    October 12, 2010 at 12:14 pm |
  123. Michelle

I say yes they did have the right to forfeit the game for the reason off all the team mates saftey. Yes the players sounded like they did chicken out but they didn't. All they wanted was to keep all their bowns in shap and not ened up out for the season. I would of for the saftey for my self. All players take playing football to far and decide to try and win when I think the game should be all about team work. All teams, schools try and be the best but it does not matter.

In school you should learn everyday, and this has been a great lesson for the students. They are still thinking about it. This is the best thing you can do for all, just keep them thinking about what is relevant. The decision was right.

    October 12, 2010 at 12:24 pm |
  127. Zach

They should have played the game. Football is a simulation of life and by not playing the game St. George is teaching their student-athletes that when you face adversity you back down.

    October 12, 2010 at 12:26 pm |
  128. Sydney.

About the headmasters' comment towards his actions: he said that he was saving the students from a possible life-changing injury.....think about football in itself. that danger is constantly present. It doesn't matter if the opposing team serves a major threat, the threat is there nevertheless. And if the head master thinks that he was doing them a favor with one game, he'd be saving their life by dissolving the football team altogether.

    October 12, 2010 at 12:28 pm |
  129. Gabe

I think that they should be called on Unsportsmanlike like conduct. When the kids volunteer for the game they should know what there getting themselves into.

I dont think that it was right fot them to do that because basically what they says is they dont believe in their team. I think it is a good thing they forfeited the game. Football injuries are extremely dangerous and can last a lifetime. It is much better to be able to walk away then to be paralyzed for life from an injury.

  135. stone

no they should not have forfit that is un sports man like
even if 'they are to good' as they said they should have played i mean you never know they still could have won or at least put up a good fight

I think that sportsmanship is very important and as well as safety but really why would you forfeit for safety just by looking and see that the other team is bigger and better.. come on have some confidence in your team..... 🙂

    October 12, 2010 at 12:42 pm |
  138. Gullette's class

That was not a good choice because the smaller team could have been faster and could have won the game. They should have tried because playing a harder team can teach you and make you better. You are never supposed to give up and always should try your best.

    October 12, 2010 at 12:42 pm |
  139. Samantha

In certain circumstances I can kind of see where they were coming from if the players there were playing were enormous and they were little wimps. But come on its football, everyone is bound to get hurt eventually. That is why you have pads and a helmet, TO KEEP YOU SAFE! So no I don't think they should have forfeited the game.

    October 12, 2010 at 12:43 pm |

    October 12, 2010 at 12:43 pm |

You shouldnt forfet any thing (in sports) you should try your best. Saftey is important but thats why they have pads and sportsmanship is important because in life when a big obstical comes up you should try to defeat it

Sometimes safety is what is most important. Yeah, they could've won, but if one of then got hurt seriously then the rest of their lives could be affected. I do believe however that they should have let the team decide whether or not they wanted to play

    October 12, 2010 at 12:45 pm |

I think they should have played beacuse the game is about haveing fun not getting hurt and they have pads for a reason.

    October 12, 2010 at 12:47 pm |

They should play. That is a bad call by the coches. No matter who you play you have a chance of getting hurt in any sport. You could get hurt in P. E.

I think they should have just played the game even if they lost, or got hurt! thats what FOOTBALLS ALL ABOUT .

  148. Damon

I believe that the administration should not have made the kids forfeit. There are plenty of obstacles in life that you are not going to be able to just quit on. They need to allow the kids the chance to play the team and size really doesn't matter for everything. It's not fair to the kids they play football to be the best. They're not going to be the best if the administrators don't let them play games because they're scared that their kids are going to get hurt. The students and parents know the chances of playing football in the first place.

    October 12, 2010 at 12:50 pm |
  149. Stephen

I think they should have played, its a high school game. Each team has an equal chance at winning the game. I personally do not think it would have been a safety issue, they are all high school athletes and every game comes with the chance of injury

    October 12, 2010 at 12:50 pm |

i thinks it is a bs call cuz now thos players will always be looking for a way out instead of trying there hardest an maybe they could have won who knows

they should have played because obviously the first to people who played the other team didn't think they were to big.

I believe that they did what they felt was right to do. If it were me as the coach I would have told them to play anyway to the best of there ability!

i think that the message that the school is sending the kids there is not teaching them right. the challenges in life and on the field can teach you things you would'nt learn otherwise.

I think that the message that the teachers are sending to the kids is that they should back away from the hardest things in life and not try at all....... when the truth is that you should try and if you lose it just makes you more determined to try even harder. Because you never know the final outcome unless you try.

Football is a sport where the players know what will happen. They know the risks and they have a choice whether to take those risks or not, it's not for others to decide. in addittion to that, they have safety equipment that will keep those injuries from happening, to a degree.

    October 12, 2010 at 1:01 pm |
  162. brendon

I think that they made a rong choice by doing this. I think that if the kids want to play then they should be able to play. If they get hurt that is there own fault.

Yes, I think it was right for them to forfeit, because they could get really hurt, and the parents of the kids on that team that got hurt, would be really angry.

I think it was right to forfeit, but I think the coach should have taken a poll with the players and the parents to see how many of them would be okay with it.

I think that they need to stop being little girls and play. It is football and they do have pads on to protect them. Furthermore, what are the players being taught when the administration cancels all of their tough games. I guess mommy and daddy will always be there to take care of life's problems and they will learn nothing about responsibility.

    October 12, 2010 at 1:05 pm |
  170. Ryan

I think it was a good call. there can be winning moments in a losing game, but im sure there would be no winning moments if they where good enough for the game to be called off. And when safety is involved, theres just no real reason to risk your health for a poor learning experience.

    October 12, 2010 at 1:05 pm |
  171. brandon

I think the team should just play and have fun. they dont need to worry about how big someone is. It is unsportsman like cunduct. The principal should just let them play because i bet most of the players on the team wanted to play in the big game so it is unfair to the ones who want to play the team and the ones who dont want to play the team are just scared. I play football and we dont even get scared if we play a big team, so they should suck it up and quit being afraid to play the team. 🙂

    October 12, 2010 at 1:05 pm |
  172. Christina

I feel that they should of taken the challenge. Yes safety is an issue but it's like that in all sports. You can get serious injuries in any sport. So I say it was stupid to forfeit the game.

    October 12, 2010 at 1:06 pm |
  173. Ben

I think that if the other team had players twice the size of everyone on there team then it would make sense but if it wasn't a horrible risk then they should play as good sportsmanship.

    October 12, 2010 at 1:06 pm |
  174. jordynne

I think that if the team agees then you should forfit the game i mean if you don't you could get hurt.

    October 12, 2010 at 1:06 pm |
  175. stephanie

I think it was a good idea for them to back out of the game, because they would have gotten crushed and probably would have gotten injured by the other players, because they were massive.

    October 12, 2010 at 1:07 pm |
  176. Amethyst

That in my opinion is poor sportsmen ship. When you decide to play a sport you have to understand there will always be bigger and better/smaller teams.. people come in a variety of size and ability. It's not like you can show up for a game and say "we are undefeated, you've lost all your games.. we forfeit because we are so much better than you." In my opinion its not right everyone should have the right and chance to play in the game no one practices to not play.

    October 12, 2010 at 1:08 pm |
  177. SeaN

i would say game on, because if your a confidant athlete you wouldnt give up because of size

    October 12, 2010 at 1:09 pm |
  178. Wyatt

The administrator has the right to pull his players at any time if he believes their safety is at risk. If he honestly believes that they might get hurt he can forfeit.

    October 12, 2010 at 1:11 pm |
  179. Jordan

I believe that they have their own choice to forfeit but I don't think that the other team should be punished for it. If I was that team I wouldn't want to forfeit. I would play my heart out and show them that no matter how good or big they are I'm going to try my hardest.

    October 12, 2010 at 1:11 pm |
  180. Jake

I think that safety is very important, it's never good if someone gets hurt and can't play. If they had the right equipment though they could kick-off, even id they had to borrow it from the other team. I would have because, I do worry about safety, but if you really want to play, then you should go for it.

    October 12, 2010 at 1:12 pm |

If they want to forfeit then they can!

    October 12, 2010 at 1:13 pm |
  182. Devonte

I feel that if the players work hard, spend time exercising, and then cant have the chance to play is unfair to them and the worst part is size never matters

    October 12, 2010 at 1:13 pm |
  183. Rexanna

How is it they tell us that we should try our hardest and we will succeed but now apparently they aren't good enough well that explains allot to me. when the going gets though the Leaders get going...............that's not how it goes it should be When the going gets Tough the Tough get tougher so let them prove themselves.

    October 12, 2010 at 1:14 pm |
  184. Noah

i think what they did was appropriate but when you start football you are expected to get hurt becuase it is a rough sport. also i think that it was pretty devistating to the fans. i also have an experience like that but we didnt forfeit when it was 145+ kids versus our 25.

    October 12, 2010 at 1:17 pm |
  185. matthew

I feel like it was some bologna that the school had to cancel the football game it does not matter what size or better than them.

I think that they did the right thing if they were trying to protect their players.

i believe that they should fire that principal

    October 12, 2010 at 1:22 pm |
  188. Shae

The players on the team know football is dangerous; most players love that danger and roughness. The headmaster should not make a decision to forfeit their game based on his bias. That is unfair and definitely sends the wrong message all around.

    October 12, 2010 at 1:27 pm |
  189. C5

The team should have at least tried to play the game. It's better to try something and lose than to not try at all.

    October 12, 2010 at 1:31 pm |
  190. orlin

I think if you are going to sign up for a sport you should play every game no matter what the out come

    October 12, 2010 at 1:32 pm |
  191. Nora

I think that they were having bad sportsmanship, and even though the other team had bigger players, it's not fair to forfeit. The players made a commitment, and no matter how different the other team is, they should still play.

    October 12, 2010 at 1:35 pm |
  192. meghan

i think it should be safty because if some one swares thats one thing but if some one dies or is parolised that is a hole other story

Well I would say that the coach did the right thing because one of the teams might have bragged if they won which could turn into a fist fight if it also involved not only the players but the other student and faculty members that went to the school.

    October 12, 2010 at 1:46 pm |
  195. robert

i think that st.Geroge is wrong to forfeit i think this because the other school football players might be big and good but when you have a football game to play you should play so you don't let your team. the coach let his team down when he forfeit the game he should play the game so his team might quit.

  198. Mr. Kornoely's Class

After a lively discussion we decided it was unfair to the players to forfeit the game. After all, the players and the coaches are the ones who are sacrificing their time after school working hard in practice, they should decide.

    October 12, 2010 at 1:52 pm |
  199. Carl

...I disagree with the headmaster's decision. The team should not have forfeited (Word of the DAY !!!) the game. I have played football for 5 years, and I have never heard of anything like these "extreme injuries." Man Up!

    October 12, 2010 at 1:53 pm |
  200. mark

why would u forfeit the game for and big players dont mean anything its how they play the game.

    October 12, 2010 at 1:55 pm |
  201. Stettler

i think they should have played the game because if the other team had huge people your team would might be faster. my football played a team with big people on it, we lost but it was close because my team did their best. Don't quit because you think your going to lose.

    October 12, 2010 at 1:58 pm |
  202. ellie

Sportsmanship is what makes the game fun. Recentley, during a game of capture the flag with my cousins, my seven year old cousin's team lost and he went off crying and said: "I can't have fun if I don't win!" Boy was he wrong! You can have fun, win or loss, if you only choose to have fun and make the best of it.

    October 12, 2010 at 1:59 pm |
  203. Mike

Thats kind of stupid. Who gives up because they're weak?

    October 12, 2010 at 2:06 pm |
  204. Tania

The smaller players should be able to compete because they have practiced and they may be able to prove everyone wrong.

    October 12, 2010 at 2:10 pm |
  205. Michael

The smaller team should be able to play so they don't learn that running away from bigger people or problems is the answer.

    October 12, 2010 at 2:11 pm |
  206. Jennifer

i think its was a good idea because safety always comes first and it would be bad to see someone injured, it would cause a lot of problems.

    October 12, 2010 at 2:11 pm |
  207. Kendra

My opinion on this subject is that if its a really bad injury you should defenetly call of the game because you cant play, due to injury. No it is not bad sportsmanship if there's a minor reason as to calling the game off, especially if its a safety issue at that. 🙂

    October 12, 2010 at 2:12 pm |
  208. POOKIE

I THINK KIDS SHOULD HAVE THE PICK ON IF THEY WANNA PLAY OR NOT BECAUSE ITS NOT REALLY FAR TOO SAY SERTAIN PEOPLE CANT PLAY I THINK IT MAKES OTHER PEOPLE FEEL BAD TOO KNOW THAT OTHR KIDS CAN PLAY BUT NOT THYEM.. IM JUST SAYING

    October 12, 2010 at 2:14 pm |
  209. Mark

I think the smaller team should be able to play against the bigger kids because their talent may be underestimated.

    October 12, 2010 at 2:14 pm |
  210. Nathan

The coach was scared and conserned that his players would get hurt, but that is the way the game goes right.

    October 12, 2010 at 2:14 pm |
  211. Tyler

I think it was unsportman like to stop a game like that. i just think they were down right chicken if you ask me. You don't know if you can win if you don't try, but since they didn't try they are just plain losers.

    October 12, 2010 at 2:17 pm |
  212. Kendra

My whole opinion on this subject is that if you are calling off a game in the name of safety then thats an "oh well" to meh. You arent doin it cuz u want to its cuz u have to. Its just like sayin ur goin to play soccer with a broken leg, u dont have a chnace of winnning. Why does it matter, the only thing that matters in sports it teamwork and good sportsmanship. 🙂 And I think he was showin okay sportsmanship not good, just okay. Heh!

    October 12, 2010 at 2:18 pm |
  213. Trevor

I think they should've played the game, because try to answer thid question for me:

Why do kids ask their parents if they can join their local football team?

The answer is that kids have their parent's PAY to play for their team.
The reason parents allow their children to play football is to have FUN.
I play football myself, even though I recently broke my thumb at PRACTICE my mom didn't yell at anyone at all, she was cool with it. We went straighht to the ER (obviously) and it all cooled down nice and slowly. It's been a long time realy 'cause I'm getting my cast of this Thursday. So my conclusion is that the should've played.

    October 12, 2010 at 2:19 pm |
  214. Nathan

the coach should of played the game because you never now they could have won that game and nowen that they played with all of there might and heart.

    October 12, 2010 at 2:19 pm |
  215. BJ

I think that they shuldnt have gave up just because they "look" bigger and better than u. You should atleast give it a try and never give up.

    October 12, 2010 at 2:21 pm |
  216. Kendra

I dont think it matters just because the other team is bigger, its just like sayin your going to win a fight one against three, the one could be weak and the three could be stong. But the weak one could still have skills as to beating the other three ppls but. Size should never ever matter. heh.:)

    October 12, 2010 at 2:21 pm |
  217. Cris

The players should choose if they want to play or not because that means the players choose to forfeit. Also means that the school chooses what games the players play. So which means the players are training and practicing for no reason if they don't play that game that week. The school is should be challenge in the name of sportsmanship.

    October 12, 2010 at 2:22 pm |
  218. Class

The teams should have played, that is what football is all about. If they are afraid of getting hurt, they shouldn't have signed up. If the headmaster was afraid of having injuries, why have a team at all.

    October 12, 2010 at 2:24 pm |
  219. Bruce

They clearly shouldn't have forfeit because it teaches all the young minds to quit on everything in life.

    October 12, 2010 at 2:26 pm |
  220. jerry

i think they made a good chioce cause all the money they will waste cause of an exterme injury or a brokin bone...

    October 12, 2010 at 2:30 pm |
  221. santana

    they should at least tried

    October 12, 2010 at 2:32 pm |
  222. Dan

It really shouldn't matter how good a team is. I am currently suffering from a concussion from a football game against a bad team. Football is a rough sport, if you sign up to play theres no guarantee that you will be safe no matter how good or bad the team your playing is.

    October 12, 2010 at 2:33 pm |
  223. Nemecio

If it was me i would just play the game. It doesn't matter if you lose, you learn something from it.

    October 12, 2010 at 2:34 pm |
  224. jerry

they should at least tried for the first half and then just forfeit. cause mirracles could happen you never know

    October 12, 2010 at 2:34 pm |
  225. Chris

I think it's poor sportsmanship because they were crying about the size of the other team and if they don't face people bigger then them then they can't learn how to defeat them.

    October 12, 2010 at 2:42 pm |
  226. Audrey

I think it is really dumb for the team to forfeit the game. If they are scared to get hurt then they shouldn't play football. The coaches and headmaster need to have more confidence in their team!!!

    October 12, 2010 at 2:44 pm |
  227. Shania

I think this is very poor to forfeit. Friday night we had a football game and our best player was tackled and was taken off in an ambulance because the other team hurt his neck. He ended up fine but we still played on for him. This shows that our team cares not only about their players but also for the team!

    October 12, 2010 at 2:45 pm |
  228. azaria

win or loser does't make you better or worst

    October 12, 2010 at 2:47 pm |
  229. Will

I think it was smart that they cancelled. We don't need more injured people in these hard economic time.

    October 12, 2010 at 2:48 pm |
  230. gatlan

i think they should get a flag for unsportsman like conduct

    October 12, 2010 at 2:50 pm |
  231. Chrisee

I think that the team should not forfeit..... i say this because the football players should know that you can not give up. If u decide to play a sport you should stick with it and know that you will have to face some big teams... our school faces big teams and still don't give up, you may have lost the game but not your schools pride...

    October 12, 2010 at 2:51 pm |
  232. Cassidy

That's just called sore sportsman ship. It sounds like the coach has ZERO faith in his team.

    October 12, 2010 at 2:56 pm |
  233. RACHEL

I think that it is unfair to the students because it is a risk to play anyway they should know that before they play and the students should decide weather or not to forfeit.

    October 12, 2010 at 2:57 pm |
  234. jessabella

The team should have decide if they wanted to go against this team. After all it's their lives on the line.Their the ones who are going to be on the feild Not use.

    October 12, 2010 at 3:01 pm |
  235. Jordan

You shouldn't apply yourself to sports if you are not up for the challenge. Although injuries may be eminent, the risks are the same for both teams.

    October 12, 2010 at 3:09 pm |
  236. Anthony

They should have asked the football team what they thought before making an official decision.

    October 12, 2010 at 3:10 pm |
  237. Mr. G

My class feels they should have played. Everyone signed up to play, knowing the risks. Also, just because they are bigger does not mean they are better. You can outsmart them. Miracles happen and you never know what happens on the field once the game begins.

    October 12, 2010 at 3:11 pm |
  238. Jordan

I think they made a good decision. A person's health is more important than a game.

    October 12, 2010 at 3:12 pm |
  239. Guffey

Whatever happened to David and Goliath? The bravery of the underdog in the face of danger? The courage and hope to rise above all obstacles? Are we ALL going to stop in our tracks when we meet a challenge? The decision to forfeit was a dishonorable move. And what of the players? Should they not have a say in what happens in THEIR game? That coach is HORRIBLY unsupportive and probably made the players feel inferior. Worthless coach. Worthless to the highest degree.

    October 12, 2010 at 3:15 pm |
  240. Miri

I think that safety is important, though forfeiting just because the other team has larger players is not good sportsmanship and makes it seem like the other team is too good for the other team.

    October 12, 2010 at 3:16 pm |
  241. Rich

Teams get better by playing better competition, win or lose. Life is like sports. Your true character reveals itself more in trying times than in easier times.

    October 12, 2010 at 3:17 pm |
  242. katherine

i THINK THAT THE KIDS SHOULD DO WHAT THEY WANT TO DO AND IF THEY LOSE THAN THEY WILL LEARN THERE LESSON!

    October 12, 2010 at 3:17 pm |
  243. Jared

I think if the coach didn't let the team play because he thought they would get hurt...I mean c'mon its football!

    October 12, 2010 at 3:18 pm |
  244. Samantha

They should have taken the challange weather or not the other team were (BIG) its football your going to get hurt and to be honest i say thats not even a football team if they say they are to "GOOD" to play its about having faith in your team and never give up

    GO PANTHERS GO!

    October 12, 2010 at 3:21 pm |
  245. JENAH

They should have played. Forfeiting a game shows that you only want to play a game that you can win and that is not sportsmanship. They might surprise themselves, but how would they know if they don't play.

    October 12, 2010 at 3:24 pm |
  246. Jazmin

I think that the St. George’s School should have taken the challenge in the name of sportsmanship and should not have forfeited the football game just because of the size of the other team. If they teach their students that if things just seem to hard to accomplish then they will also think that in the future they can give up when facing any other challenges.

    October 12, 2010 at 3:25 pm |
  247. Hunter

I think that the team shouldn't forfeit. Who knows? maybe you could get lucky and win. Also, forfieting the game might show the players that you're a quitter, and could be bad for their future.

    October 12, 2010 at 3:34 pm |
  248. Tevin

I think they should have played and at least tried because that way if you lose you can still be called a winner. Also they could have maybe won the game but since they forfited they lost truly.

    October 12, 2010 at 3:36 pm |
  249. Maegan

I think that it is un-sportsman like to not allow the team to participate just because the other team may look bigger, better, or stronger. It is highly likely no matter what the occasion may be that a player or participant on any team may be hurt whether or not it is a high impact sport or not. Even though they have won all of their games doesn't mean the other team has less potential and opportunity to win.

    October 12, 2010 at 3:38 pm |
  250. Hayden

Since I play football I somewhat agree with them because it is true you could get hurt but if the kids are up for the challenge you should let them take it.

    October 12, 2010 at 3:38 pm |
  251. Ashley

If you join the sport, even if you have to, you have a commitment to the team to make it better as a whole. Also if you love the sport you should relish the challenge of the game. It will help you for the next time you mete a greater challenge. I call that unsportsman like and cowardly.

    October 12, 2010 at 3:39 pm |
  252. micheal

they should've played the game, because there will most likely be (atleast) one big guy, so are they going to forfeit all the rest of the games cause of big guys? Well your going to be knocked around a few times, in the game and in life. I thought football players are surposed to be big, powerful, and tough, im i right?

    October 12, 2010 at 3:40 pm |
  253. Adam

it depends if the other team really was bigger but if they were about the same size then there probably wont be a serious injury

    October 12, 2010 at 3:40 pm |
  254. Ariel

I believe that the school that forfeited just where sore losers and the school that forfeited where scared and assumed they had a 99% of losing but since they didn't play they will never Know the real odds.

    October 12, 2010 at 3:42 pm |
  255. brandt

i think that playing a sport is a risk in general so why should the make an exception just because there smaller? it should be up to the team, personally i would be mad they tried to stop me from playing. its like there saying i'm not good enough to play.

    October 12, 2010 at 3:42 pm |
  256. Violet

I think they should have still played the game. Safety is important but not letting the team play was a bad show of sportsmanship. In some of there futures they may show bad sportsmanship just like the coach did.

    October 12, 2010 at 3:43 pm |
  257. Janeen

I feel that if the reason they forfeited was truly because the headmaster was concerned for the team's safety then that the descision was alright, but if they were simply concerned about the other teams ability level, then they should have gone on with the game.

    October 12, 2010 at 3:44 pm |
  258. Nicholas

I believe the team and school should have decided to take the challenge. I totally understand their consideration for safety, but overall football is a dangerous sport. No matter what team they are playing against there is always a chance for injury, which is why I think they should have took the challenge. I think they are just using safety as an excuse. I think it may have been bad sportsmanship.....If they were afraid of losing in the actual game it doesn't really matter. They may have one. My favorite saying is "You never know what may happen until it happens." They should have taken the chance. There is always danger in the field of football, no matter who or what team they are facing

    October 12, 2010 at 3:44 pm |
  259. tristan

hahahaha any football game can hurt you. playing the game is always dangerous but if you quit you loss more then bones you loss self confidence

p.s the puns are getting better my class can always look forwards to hearing them

    October 12, 2010 at 3:45 pm |
  260. Larry

I don't think the coach made the team forfeit because of safety, he forfeited because he didn't want to lose. It was not up to him to make that decision for the team

    October 12, 2010 at 3:45 pm |
  261. Ryann

I think that you should not be able to forfeit because the other team is to big. You do not see students dropping out of school because an assignment is to big.

    October 12, 2010 at 3:46 pm |
  262. colton

Its not right to keep students out of sports to keep them from getting hurt. Why would you just get out there and have fun playing the game.

    October 12, 2010 at 3:46 pm |
  263. Samantha

I think its wack that they did that cause now they wont really understand that you dont need to win to play football.
I also think they were just too scared.

    October 12, 2010 at 3:48 pm |
  264. Hunter

A lot of people are missing the point of any sport; not just football. The point is to have fun. If you had fun, and the other team had fun, that's a win no matter how the score turned out

    October 12, 2010 at 3:48 pm |
  265. Ryan

i think they should have played because it is just a game for fun!!!!!!!!

    October 12, 2010 at 3:50 pm |
  266. Garrett

I think it is the players and their parents decision. They are the ones who will be playing. If our coach told us about the team we would only want to play them more.

    October 12, 2010 at 3:50 pm |
  267. Alec

I think that the school should of let the team play because none of the players would want to lose an undefeated season by forfeiting a game.

    October 12, 2010 at 3:51 pm |
  268. Kenzie

i think that its up to the coaches on players to decide on if they should play or not. They are the ones that have the best judgement.

    October 12, 2010 at 3:51 pm |
  269. Jaycie!.. :)

I think they should have takin on the challenge!.. Because they culdve won and still be undefeated!.. but if they dnt wanna get hurt they can just ruin there changes of the championship!.. 🙂

    October 12, 2010 at 3:52 pm |
  270. Garrett

in football everyone is bound to get hurt in someway. Thats what footballs about! that's what happens! im sure it was just an excuse because the team thought that they were going to get creamed.

    October 12, 2010 at 3:52 pm |
  271. lauren

i think that they should play the game. that is bad sportsmanship

    October 12, 2010 at 3:55 pm |
  272. Ian

Although safety is important the players know the risks that are involved in playing sports, and by not letting them play the game is like telling them that they are not good enough.

    October 12, 2010 at 3:57 pm |
  273. America

Well, the team should be both safe and a good sport. Why didn't the team just keep going? We shall never know. Or will we?

    October 12, 2010 at 3:58 pm |
  274. Marion

I that having to forfeit was a good idea because it is the safety of the players is the biggest concern not winning the game.

    October 12, 2010 at 3:58 pm |
  275. Makayla

I think it is important that you are safe because sometimes it could mess up your life or your sport career. But I also think you should not back down from a game just because the other team is really tough, because its not like they are going to try and hurt you it just happens because of the way you play.

    October 12, 2010 at 3:59 pm |
  276. jacob

I think it was ok to worry about there kid but I dont think it was right for them to just not play the game.

    October 12, 2010 at 4:02 pm |
  277. Alec

I think that safety is an issue but if it’s a sport they like let them play.

    October 12, 2010 at 4:05 pm |
  278. Shawaha

I believe that it is silly to not play. You should never be afraid of competition.

    October 12, 2010 at 4:05 pm |
  279. Leigh-Anne

I think that it was mainly for safety because in other football games ther might be scouts looking for a new football player for the college. But also I think that they were scared of losing!

    October 12, 2010 at 4:06 pm |
  280. zachary

i don't think they should have forfeited because you don't learn anything and who cares if you win or lose

    October 12, 2010 at 4:09 pm |
  281. Sarah

To me I think that you should never back down and never surrender. Giving up would waste the time of the opponent, too.

    October 12, 2010 at 4:09 pm |
  282. Gabriella

I think it was right that they forfeit because saftey always comes first but the next time they play the other team they really should try to play them.

    October 12, 2010 at 4:09 pm |
  283. Shawnarah

I think that unless the team were challenged to play an older team or a team proven to be on steroids, they should play. When you think about the possibility that a FOOTBALL team is worried about their safety, it is unlikely. If safety is the concern, then football is not the right sport for them.

    October 12, 2010 at 4:13 pm |
  284. Gabby

I think it was not right that they forfeit because you it dose not matter how big or small they are it matters if you work hard and they did not belive that they could win they were sore losers.

    October 12, 2010 at 4:16 pm |
  285. Kaylee

... I think that saftey is important so its a good thing they did forfiet but sportsmanship is imortant too so there is really no right answer. But I guess if they wanted to forfiet the can. You know just so nobody gets hurt. 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

    October 12, 2010 at 4:17 pm |
  286. kyah

IT DOESNT MATTER WHAT SIZE YOU ARE I WOULD OF PLAYED

    October 12, 2010 at 4:17 pm |
  287. Caleb

Football is a very dangerous and damanding sport so when the other team is bigger than you the answer is simple, try as hard as you can dont just give up.

    October 12, 2010 at 4:18 pm |
  288. Lauren-Ashley

I believe that no matter where you are safety is the #1 priority. If the game finished there could have been even more injuries. It wasn't because of sportmanship. And plus they have the right to do what they want, especially safety wise.

    October 12, 2010 at 4:25 pm |
  289. Andrew

I think it was more safety becuase if they were to big they could have gotten seriously injured in the game and I think the headmaster made the right choice

    October 12, 2010 at 4:26 pm |
  290. Yami

"I think that safety is more important that sportsmanship" Safety always comes first.

    October 12, 2010 at 4:26 pm |
  291. alec

I think they still shoud of played. The parents knew this was not going to be a gental sport. people are going to get hurt, there's no way to avoid it.

    October 12, 2010 at 4:35 pm |
  292. Dolores

I would not be okay with that, those football players spend time on practicing for what. I would just go ahead and try at list.

    October 12, 2010 at 4:39 pm |
  293. Sarah

I think that St. George was scared. The other team was too big, and St. George was afraid of losing their winnig streak of 2-0. I wouldn't call it bad sportsmanship, I will call St. George cowards.

    October 12, 2010 at 4:41 pm |
  294. madi

I would ask the team members before we forfeit. it is mostly up to them, since they're the ones playing.

    October 12, 2010 at 4:43 pm |
  295. Cade

I think that they should of have to played because the football league im in is ages 10 through 14, and we have to play the Highschool team!!!

    October 12, 2010 at 4:44 pm |
  296. Alec

I think they should of kept on playing. it was a fair game it was bad teaching to do that.

    October 12, 2010 at 4:45 pm |
  297. Lily

I think if they're football players they should accept the challenge. Somtimes people are tougher and you should accept that. Who knew, maybe St.George MAY HAVE won but then they frofited! You can't give up- you have to try!!

    October 12, 2010 at 4:46 pm |
  298. Jacob

I don't think it was the right thing to do because it teaches the players to just give up when they face obstacles in life when the actually need to learn to be able to overcome them

If i was to play against a team that is better than me I would do things play against them if I win I would rub it in thier face. Seriously I would play against them it just like saying we are in the championship and we are so near to win and turn it down that is kind of stupid.

    October 12, 2010 at 4:50 pm |
  300. Jared

Each side has a good point, but we can't do anything about it now, its already done with.

    October 12, 2010 at 4:59 pm |
  301. Eli

I think that they should just play. Although they could win. the kids signed up for football and when they make a promise to play for the team they should play.

    October 12, 2010 at 5:01 pm |
  302. Chelly

Quitting before trying is NEVER ok. Getting a broken arm or leg isn't fun, but you have to learn from your mistakes to succeed.

    October 12, 2010 at 5:02 pm |
  303. Katie

NO , lets think about it. Just because the kids are taller and bigger doesn't mean they should forefit. Its the teams choice!!!!! They are clearly setting an example to the kids that, you should just give up in life and not go ahead with things because people are bigger, better, stronger and taller than you.

    October 12, 2010 at 5:04 pm |
  304. Ray

the team should not forfeit the game because they haven't eve try yet

    October 12, 2010 at 5:10 pm |
  305. Alex

St. George made the right choice to forfeit – To forfeit means to lose. There has to be a reason for forfeiting – safety. St. George also knows that what they did would only put on shame, if questioned, "Did you think the opponents were too good for you?" They therefore had their own opinion on whether or not the students' safety was more important than winning or losing.

    October 12, 2010 at 5:11 pm |
  306. Tamai

Well i see he doesnt want his team to get hurt but didnt other football teams play them and did they back out no they didnt they satyed in the game it doesnt matter if u win or loose

    October 12, 2010 at 5:12 pm |
  307. RRS

The football players should play anyway. They don't know what they can do if they don't try. The principal is not setting a good example for the students.

    October 12, 2010 at 5:13 pm |
  308. Blakeley

I think that the players should have played in the game. It should be up to the players if they would like to play or not. I think most of them would say that they wanted to. After all you don't try out for a football team and not want to play. Telling the players that they aren't good enough to play against another team is not good sportsmanship even if you are thinking differently.

    October 12, 2010 at 5:13 pm |
  309. Garrison

safety is first but they should of stood up and fight they could of won or one could of got hurt it goes either way

    October 12, 2010 at 5:15 pm |
  310. Paul

The team did a terrible decision to forfiet since they are putting safety over fun.

    October 12, 2010 at 5:16 pm |
  311. Sarah

I think it was a bad example to the students to forfeit because they thought the game was too challenging. If you think the game is too hard, you should stick it out and reflect on your mistakes and where you could improve later. What kind of an image are they giving kids if they quit because they don't want a challenge?

    October 12, 2010 at 5:20 pm |
  312. Errin

the team should of played. there doing a sport they love. so injury or no injury they will end up getting hurt somehow.

    October 12, 2010 at 5:22 pm |
  313. Andrea

I think it was not fair to St. Gorges students to show them that there not good enough to even get to try to beat the other team also you're just getting the other team cocky.

    October 12, 2010 at 5:29 pm |
  314. Ethan

I don't think they should have forfeited over the other team being to big, if they would of lost anyway at least they tried and hopefully did there best, it doesnt matter if you win or lose its just about playing the game your hardest and having fun so i think it was unsportsman like to forfeit.

    October 12, 2010 at 5:32 pm |
  315. Theresa

I believe safety should come first but I also believe it was not just the headmaster's place to decide if they play or forfeit it is also the players and coaches right to those choices. I think the haedmaster should of at least discussed it with the coaches and players at the school to be fair. If they still decided to forfeit that's fine it's their choice but he should of at least given the players and coaches a right to state their opinion in the matter before deciding it for himself. He could of taken those opinions then decide what the right thing to do is.

    October 12, 2010 at 5:34 pm |
  316. Austin

They should have played to see who is the best team in the leage!

    October 12, 2010 at 5:35 pm |
  317. Bella

I have 2 opinions about this. I think it was OK to forfeit because, like many kids are saying, safety comes 1st. A player could of gotten a serious injury that could affect him throughout his whole life. But also, I think the players on the St. George's School team could have tried, because you never know, maybe someone wouldn't have gotten hurt, or maybe St. George's could have won. Just because people say they are good, doesn't mean its true. Both teams have the same record. [2-0]

    October 12, 2010 at 5:38 pm |

never try to forfeit in a game you never have to give up

    October 12, 2010 at 5:39 pm |

I think they were worng to forfeit the game because their saying to themselves that they can't play against kids that are taller or bigger than them.I think they should try and not give up on themselves. =)

    October 12, 2010 at 5:39 pm |
  320. Suzanne

I think that coaches should discuss with the team what they want to do and let them play if they decide to. Football players should already be aware of the risks.

    October 12, 2010 at 5:42 pm |

i think the dicision is up to the players. it is them on the feild after all

    October 12, 2010 at 5:43 pm |

i thinkn they should play the game for the team to improve their game by playing a toughter team so they should play.

    October 12, 2010 at 5:49 pm |
  323. Cayce

I think that they should have played because saying that Lawrence Academy is to good is just like saying that St. George's school wasn't good enough. It's always better to try and fail than to never try at all. If the team had played and won they would be really proud of themselves.

    October 12, 2010 at 5:49 pm |
  324. Maria

I think the headmaster went a little too far there. Aren't there any referees whose job it is to avoid "extreme injuries"? The team should have played, even if the chances on winning were slim. This way none of the team members learnt to try their best. Is that what the school wans us to learn: back off if there are problems that seem too big to handle? They should really have played, in fact, that's what sports are for: competing, playing, fighting in a team, winning and also losing.

    October 12, 2010 at 5:50 pm |

i think they should play at all if they are going to do that

    October 12, 2010 at 5:52 pm |

I think that they should have played. Losing is a good experience that lets you know how good you are so you are ready for the next time you go against them again.

    October 12, 2010 at 5:52 pm |
  327. Sarah

I think they should have continued on with the game. It would have been worth it to find out how they could have done...Who knows, they could have impressed themselves!! Well, all they can do is ponder on how well they would have done!!

    October 12, 2010 at 5:53 pm |
  328. Rachel

They are football players. They need to be tough. Plus, both teams were 2-0 so it could have been a fairly close game!

    October 12, 2010 at 5:54 pm |
  329. Ethan

When it come to football size isn't a problem. Sports teach life lessons and if your just gonna stop because someone is bigger than you why even have a football team. I think they should be FLAGED for the choice they made.

    October 12, 2010 at 5:55 pm |
  330. Cornelius

I think they should have went to the game and tried to play. If they then thought safety was an issue they could forfeit. It is important to teach children the importance of sticking through hard work, and the feeling of accomplishment afterward.

    October 12, 2010 at 5:56 pm |
  331. Cayce

I think that they should have played because saying that Lawrence Academy is to good is just like saying that St. George's school wasn't good enough. It's always better to try and fail than to never try at all. If the team had played and won they would be really proud of themselves. Lawrence Academy's team worked hard for that game and then St. George's school decided to forfeit.

i think that they shouldn't forfiet the game because it is bad sportmenship. any way what if the other time played fair.

    October 12, 2010 at 5:58 pm |
  333. Kyle

I personaly think they should play because , win or lose the one thing that matters is the effort in teamwork and positive sportsmenship.

    October 12, 2010 at 5:58 pm |
  334. jonathan

I think that the head master should have let them play, of couse the other team mite look stonger or bigger but if they put up some good showmensship and played as a team they could have very well win

    October 12, 2010 at 6:00 pm |

    October 12, 2010 at 6:01 pm |
  337. zharia

NO, they should not have foreited beacause they could have least tried, you never know until you try, even if they are a great team.I honestly think it wasn't necessary.

    October 12, 2010 at 6:02 pm |
  338. Angelique

If you decided to play football in the first place you had to know there would be risks. Don't get scared once you see somebody that might just crush you, it's a challenge who knows they might have even won. You never know until you try.

    October 12, 2010 at 6:03 pm |
  339. kenny

NO because if you have a football team you should be willing to play not quit. If you dont play then why should you have a team?

    October 12, 2010 at 6:03 pm |
  340. Lucille

    Safety's more important.
If the players get hurt or even get KILLED by accident, there is no sportmanship or anything.
They should keep themselves safe first.

    October 12, 2010 at 6:03 pm |
  341. Daniel

I don't think that the team should've forfeited because, it’s better to go down trying, rather then go down not trying at all. However, it wasn't the team that quit, it was there representatives that made the choice for them.

    October 12, 2010 at 6:04 pm |

The Team Should Have played. They Never even gave it a shot!

    Hey Carl,
I think that it was very uncalled for they should have practiced more just beacause they are bigger doesent mean they are helpless and too small.

    October 12, 2010 at 6:16 pm |
  344. Skylar

I might have actually liked it depending on what it is.

    October 12, 2010 at 6:18 pm |
  345. Jordan

Well they have every right to forfiet but they shuld get put down a game so if they are 1-0 they would drop to 0-0 so no they should not have forfieted so they had a chance to actualy win but they for got what they could do.

    October 12, 2010 at 6:22 pm |
  346. Skylar

Safety always comes first. The football teams were right to do that.

    October 12, 2010 at 6:24 pm |
  347. Shaniqua

Obviously safety should come first. Usually people are too absorbed in what their trying to achieve that safety is the last thing people think about. If the coach feels that the opposing team is too tough for them, that's his decision, even though none of the football players probably agreed to that.

    October 12, 2010 at 6:27 pm |
  348. Jason

No, the point in football is too have fun it doesn't matter who wins or loses its just a fun experience for student and coaches

    October 12, 2010 at 6:30 pm |
  349. Demi

I think that they shouldn't have forfeited just because the other team is bigger. Yes they could get hurt but anybody can get hurt while playing football, its a physical sport.

    October 12, 2010 at 6:30 pm |
  350. Ryan

I think that safety always comes first and if St George wanted to forfeit for safety purposes, they did the right thing.

    October 12, 2010 at 6:33 pm |
  351. Courtney

I don't think that this was the smartest decision ever made by the headmaster but he shouldn't be penalized for it, he probably thought this was a good idea at the time. The team should've play, but by the time there in high school i don't think, not playing in one game tells them to back down from a challenge that looks too hard. But in the future go for it cause, isn't that why you join a school sport (to play).

    October 12, 2010 at 6:35 pm |
  352. meaghan

You can learn more from losing than you'll ever learn from winning. And plus the parents know that if they sign their child up for football they know there is a cahnce that their child might get hurt. So go take on the challenge head first.

    October 12, 2010 at 6:36 pm |
  353. Mekayla

If the Headmaster thinks that the student players are going to be injured then he made the right decision to not make the team play

    October 12, 2010 at 6:37 pm |
  354. Glory

I don't think that the other team should forfeit just because the other team has bigger players can't the other team just live with it!!! The other team needs to step up and play the game not be scared and be scared that you are going to get hurt by someone on the other team!!! 😀

    October 12, 2010 at 6:41 pm |
  355. Evan

I don't think that it is right to forfeit the game because you should just have fun and play the game even if the other team is better then you

    October 12, 2010 at 6:43 pm |
  356. Joshua

I believe that the kids should have at least been given the chance to play. A team cannot be so big that a game must be forfeited due to the build of the other players. Winning moments can take place in losses.

    October 12, 2010 at 6:43 pm |
  357. Ken

It doesnt matter the bigger they are the harder they fall.

    October 12, 2010 at 6:45 pm |
  358. Jeremy

They really did the right thing calling off that game. Sounds like someone could've gotten hurt. If the size differences are true, I wouldn't have been on the St.George's team...

    October 12, 2010 at 6:53 pm |
  359. Talia

i think that they should have played the game, because it didn't matter if they lost or not, it is that they tried, and that's all that counts. like the hurricanes game, they lost, but they know that they tried their best and they still have faith and are looking forward to a better game next time. if the football players from st. georges school played the game then lost, they could learn how to play better in their future games.

    talia

    October 12, 2010 at 6:53 pm |
  360. Nick

I think that they should have played the game. Even if the opposing team is bigger then you it does not mean you don't have a chance. Size is not everything. You also need to have the mentality and skill to play football. Who knows, St. Georges could have won.

    October 12, 2010 at 6:54 pm |
  361. Jessica

I think they should have played. It shows good sportsmanship and respect to the opposite team. If you make a promise (such as playing the game) you need to stick with it and do it. Although safety is important so is learning to go through with something.

    October 12, 2010 at 6:55 pm |
  362. Connor

The safety of the players is more important than just playing the game. One hit could change one or more of the players lives. Football in the United States has had some serious injuries. We have been trying to upgrade the equipment to make the players safer. If the other team is bigger and stronger than the other team, wouldn't that make the risk of getting a critical injury greater? The headmaster made a good point. Good decision by him.

    October 12, 2010 at 6:57 pm |
  363. Talia

i think that they should have played the game, because it didn't matter if they lost or not, it is that they tried, and that's all that counts. like the hurricanes game, they lost, but they know that they tried their best and they still have faith and are looking forward to a better game next time. if the football players from st. georges school played the game then lost, they could learn how to play better in their future games.

  364. Angie

There are two ways to put it: You could forfeit and be safe, because, after all, safety comes first. But, on the other hand, you should atleast give it a shot. You never know unless you try. So, I feel that you can't blame them for forfeiting, but they won't get better unless they attempt to take on the other team. The principal had to make a choice, right?

    October 12, 2010 at 7:02 pm |
  365. Raquel

I don't think it was right that they forfeit they should have at least tryed and if anything got dangerous at least then there would have had a better reoson to forfeit

    October 12, 2010 at 7:02 pm |
  366. camilla

they were smart to forfit. i wouldnt want to get hurt, i would rather not get hurt, than get crushed, but thats my opinion 🙂

    October 12, 2010 at 7:03 pm |
  367. Emma

St. George's shouldn't have forfeited because that gives students a quitting mindset and quitters will always fail.

    October 12, 2010 at 7:04 pm |
  368. Amy

I think it isn't safe, but its like saying "You can't win because your too small." its not fair. if all the players on the team are 90lbs for example I wouldn't want them going against some one 150lbs. I think they should have at least tried to play against them, and if the small guy start getting really hurt then call off the game. sure the team might not like it, but its better than getting smashed.

    October 12, 2010 at 7:04 pm |
  369. FL Middle School

    Hey, Carl,
Our students feel that the administration did not support their students by forfeiting the game due to the imbalanced "size" or "ability" of their opposition. What message was sent by an example of giving up or giving in? True winners never quit, and quitters will never win.

    October 12, 2010 at 7:06 pm |
  370. Alexa

Even though they look big and tough doesn't mean that you can't win. If you give up without trying, you will never achieve big things. You should always stand up for yourself.

    October 12, 2010 at 7:07 pm |
  371. Jessie

Nobody wants to play for a team that justs quits when there's a reason it might lose. I think that is very bad sportsmanship.

    October 12, 2010 at 7:08 pm |
  372. Lizzie

I think that was a good call. If something that could happen that would injure the team forfeit was a good choice. However if it was because they might lose, that's just bad sportsmanship.

    October 12, 2010 at 7:10 pm |
  373. chase

ya i think it was just bad sportsmenship and ya now want my distric wolud never back down from a game

    October 12, 2010 at 7:11 pm |

I believe that safety is more important. A serious injury can change a players life in a tragic way.

    October 12, 2010 at 7:14 pm |
  375. Simon

I think that the kids should have had a chance to play. They shouldn't be held back by their coach's POOR sPOORstmanship.

    October 12, 2010 at 7:16 pm |
  376. matt

I think the school should be flagged for unsportsmanlike-conduct because the players have agreed to take the risk by trying out for the sports.

    October 12, 2010 at 7:17 pm |
  377. Maura

Personally, I would not like to have my own game cancelled because that just would tell me that the coach didn't believe in me and my team, but I would also appreciate it if I knew that someone cared about my safety and the safety of my teammates.

    October 12, 2010 at 7:18 pm |
  378. Rayne

I think that they should have played. Injury is a risk you are willing to take if you play football. Also people play football TO PLAY football. I think forfeighting was uncalled for and unnessecary.

    October 12, 2010 at 7:23 pm |
  379. WILL

If you join the football team you make a commentment to play and you should play in every game and play your hardest.

i would have played the game because my baseball team went up against a lot of schools that were bigger than us and we won some of those games and lost some by a few points..you never know if you will beat that team.

    October 12, 2010 at 7:27 pm |
  381. Meg :)

    Hiya Carl,
Its' uncalled for because the coaches should have boys who are ready to play no matter the size, or what chance they have or don't have. When you enter the football field, you always have the chance of getting hurt.... they shouldn't have forfeited.

    October 12, 2010 at 7:34 pm |
  382. Alexia

I think the coach was right I would rather be kicked out of a football game due to bigger kids than be trampled by them its for the the safety of the kids.

    October 12, 2010 at 7:36 pm |
  383. Brenden

St. George should have played and not have forfeited. Win or lose, you still have the pride of trying

    October 12, 2010 at 7:37 pm |
  384. Britain

I get that they want to put safety first, but forfeiting the game wasn't a right thing to do. They are just teaching them that when times are tough, just give up. When that's not what sports are suppose to teach them.

    October 12, 2010 at 7:37 pm |
  385. Joshua

I think they should have played because they signed up to play. They knew it was a contact sport.

    October 12, 2010 at 7:37 pm |

I appreciate the fact that the principal was concerned about their(the players) safety, but i think it's not good sportsmanship.

    October 12, 2010 at 7:43 pm |

I thought it wasn't a good idea because playing is not about the winning it's about having fun no matter how many injuries show up.

Safety is the most important thing for a school but they should have thought it out carefully before making a hasty decision like that. They should have got the opinions of both student and parents to see have they felt. Safety is important but making a student feel bad or they are not good enough is life lasting.

Yes, he was right, the saftey of students is way more important than winning a game as barbaric as football

    October 12, 2010 at 8:06 pm |
  399. Alec

Better to have tried for , than to not have tried. They should of at least called a rematch. Forfeiting usually proves weakness. Whether it is weakness in size, streangth, or brains.

    October 12, 2010 at 8:06 pm |
  400. Ebuka

Forfeit? Haven't they heard of the phrase "never back down"? It's also going to make to school look like sissy's so......

    October 12, 2010 at 8:06 pm |
  401. kaylee

equipment is for the safety the sportsmanship is the love of the game...so why not play a game with bigger people, it can teach you knew skills, they aren't helpless, they are just a different size.

    October 12, 2010 at 8:07 pm |
  402. Connor

Bad idea to back down because they are playing football for fun and they are teaching them that when you will lose not even to try?

    October 12, 2010 at 8:10 pm |
  403. Melissa

When joining a sport, you know there is a risk at getting injured. It's just the nature of sports. If you play someone bigger and better than you are it makes you a better player and helps you never to back down in life

    October 12, 2010 at 8:12 pm |
  404. Makayla

I think that is out right foul sportmanshipalso they are teaching those players that when it gets to be too big of achallenge they should back down. They should be taught that when you face a challenge you should conquer it. They should of given it a shot, no pain no gain.

    October 12, 2010 at 8:13 pm |
  405. Kristin

I think it was very disrespectful, or rude to the players of the team. I think the coach should of at least asked them before the coach decided. It would be more fair to the players, and the other team.

    October 12, 2010 at 8:13 pm |
  406. Ebuka

Why should they forfeit? Haven't the heard the saying "never back down"? And for the headmaster, why would you quit? Isn't the point of football to play well... FOOTBALL and have fun?

    October 12, 2010 at 8:14 pm |
  407. Lauren

They should of taken on the team!! Sports are all about taking chances and doing everything to the best of your ability!!

    October 12, 2010 at 8:18 pm |
  408. Connor

I think that teaching people not even to try is bad. they should know the little engine that could and they may want to keep their "family" of students safe.

    October 12, 2010 at 8:19 pm |
  409. austin

i say yes the big guys had an advantage but yet the smaller guys probably were quicker so they could have atleast challanged in the name of sportsmanship, if i were on the team i would have begged the coach to let us play

    October 12, 2010 at 8:22 pm |
  410. Devon

i think it is not healthy for a coach of any sport to just forfiet if he doesnt have faith in his team. it also teaches the people on the team just to give up on somthing to hard, even if people could get injured.

    October 12, 2010 at 8:23 pm |
  411. Joseph

Yes I think that you should be safe, but in order to get better you have to play someone better. You should ask the players if they want to play the other team.

    October 12, 2010 at 8:33 pm |
  412. Annabelle

I think that just because the team may look menacing, it doesn't mean that they should back down. The important part of the game is learning how to do better next time. If they don't learn how to cope with losses, they'll never know how to win correctly.

    October 12, 2010 at 8:34 pm |
  413. Aimee

I would have had the game go. I think they should have practices a lot more so that they may think they can be them. Also just because the team is big doesn't mean you can't score against that team.

    October 12, 2010 at 8:34 pm |
  414. Jack

I know the school wants to put safety first. but, to be fairly honest, the chance of anybody getting hurt would be the same of they were playing against another team. That's why we have safety equipment.

    October 12, 2010 at 8:36 pm |
  415. Alaina

I think that the coaches shouldn't of forfited. Saftey is important, but if they are that worried about it, they should get new equiptment.

    October 12, 2010 at 8:38 pm |
  416. derrick

if i was on the team i would score the touchdown to win the game with sportmanship and i would help people out if they were hurt but if i was a fan it depends on how you play the game of football also i'm a patriots fan.

    October 12, 2010 at 8:39 pm |
  417. Lucas

It's football people get hurt sometimes, but that's the game.

    October 12, 2010 at 8:41 pm |
  418. wendy

it is not good to quit the football team just because you are too good to play.that is just crazy!do not quit because you are too good to play?i think you should not quit because you are too good.keep playing and do your best!

    October 12, 2010 at 8:45 pm |
  419. Austin

I think that they knew the risks and they signed up for the team anyway. they should not back down, even if there are health risks.

    October 12, 2010 at 8:48 pm |
  420. Janelle

I think the pplayers should chose. Maybe they know what is good for them. It is them playing on the field not their coaches.

    October 12, 2010 at 8:48 pm |
  421. Jade

To me, they should have kicked off, but if "saftey" is the issue they should have picked stronger guys!

    October 12, 2010 at 8:48 pm |
  422. Austin

I think that sportsmanship should come first. I think that because the players playing football are already taking a risk of injuries. Every sport has injuries. It's better to go down trying than to forfeit!

    October 12, 2010 at 8:50 pm |
  423. Katie

You should always try even if it is the hardest team or the worst team!

    October 12, 2010 at 8:57 pm |
  424. carlos

i think that sportmentship is a good way to show your aditude.

    October 12, 2010 at 8:58 pm |
  425. Dylan

Its football people are going to get hurt, if you dont want to get hurt by people bigger then you just play a different sport

    October 12, 2010 at 8:59 pm |
  426. Hannah

I think what they did didn't show very good sportsmanship. If you never play teams that are better, tougher, or bigger than you how will you ever get better at that sport? There is always a chance you could get hurt, you could even be playing against people that are smaller than you and get hurt, so why forfeit the game?

    October 12, 2010 at 9:00 pm |
  427. Trae

with me being a foot ball player i would say it wasn't really that cool to forfeit as a football player you are supposed to take on any challenge given to you

    October 12, 2010 at 9:00 pm |
  428. warner

As a sports player (soccer) I don't think I would forfeit a game because the other team is bigger or may look stronger, but at the same time I think that if the headmaster thought he was doing the right thing by not allowing the team to play he should not be criticized for his actions.

    October 12, 2010 at 9:00 pm |
  429. chelsea

i think it was the right thing to do.the safty of the players comes befor the lesson in life.not playing was a good choice on the coaches point.

    October 12, 2010 at 9:01 pm |
  430. ty

were tought to do our best even when the odds are stacked against us,so by forfiting the game is basicly saying to give up when things go rough.

    October 12, 2010 at 9:02 pm |
  431. Brice

They should never back out of a game like that. You can't stay 2 – 0 the whole season. You got to try.

    October 12, 2010 at 9:02 pm |
  432. Brice

They shouldn't be babies about it, they should try, even if they lose.

    October 12, 2010 at 9:05 pm |
  433. Jordan

I believe that a school should care about the safety of their students but the principal should have done it with popular sovernty, or took a vote, and have the players and the coaches vote if they wanted to play or forfeit. Students should be able to excersice their rights for practice when they become adults. Isn't that what school is for?

    October 12, 2010 at 9:05 pm |
  434. Alexander

i think in life you will come across bigger, stronger, faster, smarter people in life. sometimes you got to dell with the rain.

    October 12, 2010 at 9:22 pm |
  435. Kyle

What? WHAT? Why do you quit a game because the other team is "too beefy" or "too good?" If the New England Patriots pick up huge, beefy players and beef up their offense and defense, and they play the skinny, toothpick Denver Broncos, the Broncos have no right to forfeit because the players are too big. That's uncalled for. Play the game! You're both 2-0, it would be awesome to see who winds up being 2-1 and who gets to be 3-0. I hope the team that forfeited winds up losing the rest of their games in the season.

    October 12, 2010 at 9:32 pm |
  436. Robert

I think they may of backed out for safely bacause they could get hurt, but on the other hand they should of played and they might of won. the couch should teach them if u try u will succied.

    October 12, 2010 at 9:34 pm |
  437. zach

If I was the coach I would not let the students play because it is more important to make sure there are very little injury.

    October 12, 2010 at 9:36 pm |
  438. Doby

the school was right to prevent painful injuries by forfitting

    October 12, 2010 at 9:36 pm |
  439. Doby

I think that it depends on weather or not they just didnt want to play or if they were not up for the challenge and it was ok that hey forfited its not like they quit moe like they were looking out for there safety.

    October 12, 2010 at 9:37 pm |
  440. Gillian

It is always exciting to participate in sports activities and it is even more memorable when the activities are school related. These athletes should have been given the opportunity to compete and the coaches could have monitored the game to watch for possible safety issues. The forfeit could be seen as a weakness. Let the kids have fun!

    October 12, 2010 at 9:38 pm |
  441. Trevor

I believe the couch is a poor example to his players and is teaching them the wrong solution to a problem. I also believe that a problem should be faced and losing is a part of life.

    October 12, 2010 at 9:38 pm |
  442. Kiana

I think that it was the right thing to do because if they took the challange they could of really got hurt and that would of came back on the coachs.

    October 12, 2010 at 9:38 pm |
  443. kevin

it doesn't matter what the team size was. if they were scared of being hurt they should have sticked to play their little pillow football in their dorms. there will always be a better or bigger team can't go running back to their mothers arms again.!

    October 12, 2010 at 9:44 pm |
  444. Logan

I think it is good and bad that the team forfeit. It is good that the school cares about the players, but now that they forfeit, the players may think that if something is difficult, they can just quit.

    October 12, 2010 at 9:44 pm |
  445. Arielle

I understand why they would forfeit. i wouldn't want to get hurt honestly i think football is a dangerous sport even with the equipment, and plus that the guys are muscular then them. Sometimes you have to give up over the hardest challenges.

    October 12, 2010 at 9:45 pm |
  446. Jordan

I believe it should be saftey and sportsmantship because the team could of won and nobody would of gotten hurt. But if somebody got hurt people would help them, including their teammates.nShowing sportsmanship and saftey first!

    October 12, 2010 at 9:46 pm |
  447. Jack

I believe that the game should have been played. By forfeiting, the school is setting an example that it is okay to quit when things are rough. This is not something that kids should be taught by, and is a bad rule to live by.

    October 12, 2010 at 9:52 pm |
  448. Skaggs

I disagree with the decision to forfeit. The life skills that come from school sports are important. And I am pretty sure that the kids that tried out for the team don't care how big the other team is. I think that the challenge would of helped the players learn more about teamwork and to never give up.

    October 12, 2010 at 9:55 pm |
  449. Olga

Backing out helps in some situations. If it's your safety at risk then it could be an option. Giving up doesn't always mean you're weak... sometimes it just means that you're strong enough to let go.

    October 12, 2010 at 9:56 pm |
  450. Skaggs

I think the old saying comes into play in the situation, "it's better to have gone and lost than to never have gone at all."

    October 12, 2010 at 9:57 pm |
  451. Shaeliee

They should not of forfeited the game because the players when they get older could have a greater chance to just give up when it gets hard. Even the football players at my school are little and we don't forfeit games because of safety. Just play it out, it's called tackle football for a reason.

    October 12, 2010 at 9:58 pm |
  452. Jorge

i think that it is important to have saftey, but I still think they could have showed up in the game and then forefit

    October 12, 2010 at 9:59 pm |
  453. Skaggs

I think the decision to forfeit was a disgrace to football and the moral of St. Georges football team. Football is about hard work and discipline, it's not about giving up when you are intimidated.

    October 12, 2010 at 10:00 pm |
  454. Elliott

I think they had a right to cancel the game, because safety comes first. But if they're going to do that they should at least notify the other team that's what they want to do.

    October 12, 2010 at 10:02 pm |
  455. Angie

Its "When the going gets tough, the tough get going." Not "When the going gets tough, the tough...give up?"

    October 12, 2010 at 10:06 pm |
  456. David

I think they should of played the game. Just because they are bigger does not mean the will injure the other players. If you just forfeit you never get to try.

    October 12, 2010 at 10:08 pm |
  457. Jessa

Like always, I would always and rather be safe than sorry.

    October 12, 2010 at 10:08 pm |
  458. Joey

If you teach a kid to quit when things get hard, then chances are, we will quit. We follow the demonstrations that we see, hear, and do so by quiting when things get to hard in a football game, then we will learn to quit when a test gets to hard or something bigger.

    October 12, 2010 at 10:11 pm |
  459. Marquis

I think that they should have [given] up. I mean, when I played tackle football, my team wouldn't have given up.You could say we played to the death. But still, if it was a safety reason then yes, forfeit.

    October 12, 2010 at 10:14 pm |
  460. Kat

The team should have played! If student's superiors tell them not to try when they doubt their ability, then why should they behave any differently in the real world? Students should be encouraged to push themselves to their highest standards.

    October 12, 2010 at 10:23 pm |
  461. Paloma

I think that they should forfeit the game in the name of safety. Safety first is always a first priority.

    October 12, 2010 at 10:26 pm |
  462. Paloma

I think that safety is the top priority! I would rather know I'm not going to get hurt than to get severly injured. It also depends on the conditions of the weather, for example, extreme hot weather, or wet surfaces.

    October 12, 2010 at 10:29 pm |
  463. Kristine

Safety always comes 1st in my book but forfitting because you're scared you might lose is not something you should teach kids.

    October 12, 2010 at 10:30 pm |
  464. maryn

sportsmanship is very importiant even in football in a sport in order to suceed you cant back down no matter what the chaenge.

    October 12, 2010 at 10:31 pm |
  465. Michaela

I think that the team should have played the game. So what it the guys were to big, doesnt mean they have skill. You never know they could of won the game! Don't be afraid to try!

    October 12, 2010 at 10:32 pm |
  466. Trevor

I think that they are babies for forfiting. its football, you cant be affriad. you dont see the pros forfit because they are concerned about their saftey

    October 12, 2010 at 10:33 pm |
  467. Jackson

I think that they shouldn't of played because if they did play and someone got badly hurt they wouldn't have a carer as a football player or any other sports.

    October 12, 2010 at 10:33 pm |
  468. maryn

In a sport no matter what the challenge is it's importiant to never back down. I think they should of played because when you join a sport you're making a commitment to go out, try your hardest, and just have fun.

    October 12, 2010 at 10:39 pm |
  469. Anna

They should have played, it was bad sportsmanship to just randomly say they won't because the other team was bigger. That way they can learn what they need to imporove on.

    October 12, 2010 at 10:53 pm |
  470. Wallace

I think that saftey is important, but they shouldn't have forfited. They should have played for fun! Sports aren't always about winning! They can be for enjoying the sport and having fun with your friends. Its fun to win, but if its one less game you get to play in the season. Yes some teams are better than others

    October 12, 2010 at 10:56 pm |
  471. Elizabeth

I think the schools should've played against each other, but should've taken precautions.

    October 12, 2010 at 10:59 pm |
  472. Connor

They should have kept playing. Isn't the referees job to keep the players safe? Its never good to quit before actually doing it. Just do your warm-ups good, stretch, and play some football.

    October 12, 2010 at 11:00 pm |
  473. Sydnee

I think it should have been sportmenship becuase at least they would have been playing for fun who cares who won or not i would have played!

    October 12, 2010 at 11:06 pm |
  474. Robbie

They should've let them play. If they were forfeiting the game because of safety then they shouldn't have football at all. Football is a dangerous sport, so one game is no different from any other game. Every one has a chance of getting hurt in football. My opinion of this is it is less a thing of Safety or Sportsmanship, and more a game of Chicken.

    October 12, 2010 at 11:24 pm |
  475. Nathan

i think it was stupid for the principal to cancel the game imean its football, has that game ever been safe?

    October 12, 2010 at 11:30 pm |
  476. Kenji

I think that saving someone's physical – and possibly social – build is more important than a college football win.

    October 12, 2010 at 11:31 pm |
  477. Marcos

If this situation was really unsafe than the district would have stopped the game.Since they didn't, the coach should not have forfeit.Unless the majority of the team and their parents were scared the coach should not have forfeit.Unless he wanted to make the school look bad then the coach should not have forfeit.Unless the players joined the team to not play than the coach should not have forfeit.Unless the opponents were pros from the NFL than for the last time the coach should not have forfeit.Let them play.

    October 12, 2010 at 11:33 pm |
  478. Kyle

it wasn't right to forfiet because live is full of tough times and you can't always run away

    October 12, 2010 at 11:33 pm |
  479. Brad

The headmaster didnt make the right decition, you play sports with the risk of gettin hurt, you cant control that, if you try not to get hurt you most likely will, they shoud have just let them play, anything can happen in sports, upsets can hapoen.

    October 12, 2010 at 11:39 pm |
  480. mickayla adn jessica

we thank (we) would be more liked to be knew as for trying and losing and then not trying and losing. the loser is the winner in the heart. even if the other team was big or good doesnt mean you cant play.

    October 12, 2010 at 11:54 pm |
  481. Christina

To forfeit may have not been the greatest choice, but I think maybe it was okay to not go against a team you think its too much. Like if you are placed in an Honors class, and you can't handle it, you could talk to the counselor to be placed in a more suitable class.

    October 12, 2010 at 11:57 pm |
  482. Rylie

I think it's kind of like a sneaky way of being a chicken when someone forfeits a game. I mean come on, all sports have their chances of injury, but that's the risk that is taken when signing up for it. And it really isn't good sportsmanship saying "Oh, their team was too big." ...Get real.

    October 13, 2010 at 12:28 am |
  483. Gilbert

Should have played. Probably knew they were going to lose, so they gave up.

    October 13, 2010 at 1:05 am |
  484. Sara

I think that being on a team means your willing to play against anyone,If you've signed a release form no one can stop you from playing.I also think that not being able to play will teach the other team to just quit too.

    October 13, 2010 at 1:07 am |
  485. Warner

The school shouldve taken the challenge in the name of sportsmanship because the players might've been embarrassed for the forfeiting

    October 13, 2010 at 1:42 am |
  486. jorge S.

well i think if you are going to enter a sport you have to know the risks and it not fair for the team because they just want to play and hacve fun. sometimes you are going to have problems but you have to find a way to solve them

    October 13, 2010 at 2:05 am |
  487. Judy

I think safety is way more important than sportsmanship. Sure they can be embarrased, and I'm sure that they won't be proud. But if they get hurt, or get a hit on be head, it might leave with them forever. 😦 So I think the principal has a perfect reason for cancelling the game and I don't know why people disagree. Safety first!:)

    October 13, 2010 at 2:26 am |
  488. Judy

ok. I guess that some people have good reasons for sportsmanship, but imagine you're playing in the game. Wouldn't you be afraid that you might get hurt by the "big guys? Well, that's my arguement! 🙂

    October 13, 2010 at 2:31 am |
  489. Annie

I think that they should have practiced more... They gave up. You should never give up no matter what. Football is about risks. Face your fears!

    October 13, 2010 at 6:33 am |
  490. Sierra

I think the team makes for a really bad role model. Backing down from a game because you "think" that you will get hurt is very bad sportsmanship. Our whole life we are taught to at least try our best. Also, they are already playing high school football,it is a possibility to get hurt in any game.

    October 13, 2010 at 7:15 am |
  491. Alex

I think that this is just stupid. They should make it the parents' decision to play or not. And if the parents dont want to play them then have the kids not play. That does not mean that they forfeit, it just means that they will have less players on the team for the game.

    October 13, 2010 at 7:15 am |
  492. Jeanne

They should've tried to play for at least a few minutes and if it was too hard, then it would've been okay to forfeit.

    October 13, 2010 at 7:17 am |
  493. Dylan

I think this is just ridiculous because football is a tough hard working sport. If you just give up it doesnt seem like it's hard working. Also, these two teams have the same record. You have to let the kids play, what if they win?

    October 13, 2010 at 7:25 am |
  494. Joe

I think the should have played the game because it's football, your bound to get hurt once and a while!

    October 13, 2010 at 7:35 am |
  495. Keaton

I think that not playing the game, meant that when you see something bigger than you then you give up. So when you face challenges that are bigger than you then you hand another person your challenge!

    October 13, 2010 at 7:38 am |
  496. Courtnee :D

I think that they should have played the game carefully becaause big guys are alot slower. If they used speed and stamina to play, they could have whipped them!!

    October 13, 2010 at 8:00 am |
  497. ALi

I think that it was wrong to back out. There will always be obstacles in life, but most of the time you still have to do it. Take risks in life and just try.

    October 13, 2010 at 8:04 am |
  498. Aaron

I think that forfeiting a game only because the players are much bigger has it's advantages and disadvantages. Sure, they can become severly injured however, in sports that's just a risk you need to take!

The coach is practically telling his players that when life gets tough, back down. But I can see the other side to the story too because if the payers on the opposite side really hurt the players, then the coach is propably going to think, why didn't give up when I had the chance?

    October 13, 2010 at 8:16 am |
  500. sueie

I think that safety is more important than sportsmanship because eventhough the kids mihgt have to plat the games that come up the school should be more concerned with the student's saftey no matter what the out come is.

    October 13, 2010 at 8:30 am |
  501. luis

That is what hapend in a sport you like it well you will get the concequences

    October 13, 2010 at 8:32 am |
  502. Harrison

I believe that was a terribe deciion its not like you can just quit in real life when things go south side.

    October 13, 2010 at 8:38 am |
  503. emily

i think that they should have played becuase thats what football is all about. you just can't back out becuase the guys are bigger than you. you must always try your hardest no matter what. you may get hurt but that is always happening in football, and if you don't want to be getting hurt or whateve you want to call it you should of not joined the team in the first place. so no i think that they should of not forfit the game.

    October 13, 2010 at 8:50 am |
  504. John

This is very unlikely for such a great coach to teach his marvelous team to back down and forfeit. Everyone has to take a little challenge in their lives. Football is just like a play or musical, if something messes up you keep the show going.

    October 13, 2010 at 9:02 am |
  505. John

It is a all contact sport they need to go out and play the game or they mite as well stop and never play again they have no integrity and thats SAD!!!

    October 13, 2010 at 9:08 am |
  506. John

These football teams that forfeit are not real football teams

    October 13, 2010 at 9:15 am |
  507. Kylia

I think they did the right thing to forfeit the game because of safety. Safety is way more important! So I'm giving effort to the team that forfeit they're game over safety.(:

    Thanks, Kylia.

    October 13, 2010 at 9:16 am |
  508. Cierrah

I think that if they had a fear of getting injured then it was probably best to forfeit the game. Think about I mean if they would of got injured in this game then they couldn't have played in future games to come.

    October 13, 2010 at 9:19 am |
  509. Brea ;)

I think they should have accepted the challenge and went for it. Do they expect to get a small team every time they play? I’m sure it would have been scary, but what does that show them? To back down every time there is a challenge. "When the going gets tough, the tough get going." I don’t think forfeiting was right and it definitely didn’t set a good example.

    October 13, 2010 at 9:39 am |
  510. jordan

just cause there big doesn't mean you should forfeit from the game thats teaching that its alright to back down when a giant hurdle is in your way

    October 13, 2010 at 9:46 am |
  511. Chris

Stop whining thats what I say if you join footbal you better be prepared to be hurt so what if your hurt these kids just learned that in the face of adversity just quit and in that they will never take a risk their life will be completly boring they will always quit and for that they WILL NEVER WIN

    October 13, 2010 at 10:19 am |
  512. Mourice

I think that they should of practice more because the size of someone depends on the strenght of the kid playing and they could get engerd very badly.

    October 13, 2010 at 10:21 am |
  513. Ally

Why would they be teaching there kids this? Then if they do that then all of the teams will start looking at the other teams and forfeiting. What is the point in playing then? I think that he was trying to cover up his tracks by saying it was for the safety of the players.

    October 13, 2010 at 10:26 am |
  514. Kristine

Safety should always come 1st but in sports my rule is different.St. Gergia shouldn't have forfeited because they were afraid they might loose.Football is a dangerous sport sometimes and when they joined the team knew that.

    October 13, 2010 at 10:27 am |
  515. Unique

If you wanted to play football you must know that their are gonna be diffuclt things you are gonna have to face. In football everything is not gonna be easy its gonna be tough including the different teams. There will be people bigger and better then you but just because that happens dont mean you can back down. You have to take the challenge. Backing down only shows that your a punk and cant face big things in life. My brother plays football and he is a very small boy. Everyday he has to face people bigger than him and he does tthe calnge why cant they?

    October 13, 2010 at 10:27 am |
  516. Emily

I think they should have played the game because if you play a sport you have to understand the risks of playing the sport which includes getting hurt.

    October 13, 2010 at 10:40 am |
  517. Alex

Football is a game, your going to get hit anyway. You win some and lose some.

    October 13, 2010 at 10:41 am |
  518. Travic

No pain...No gain. The head-master is teaching the players to back down from a challenge.

    October 13, 2010 at 10:43 am |
  519. Joseph

Yes i think you should be safe. But in order to get better, you have to play someone better.

    October 13, 2010 at 10:51 am |
  520. Michael

I think people should be safe but still acnowledge the fact that it is football, youre gona get hurt one way or the other.

    October 13, 2010 at 10:56 am |
  521. Hannah

I think they should of kept playing i mean they practiced for it so don't give up

    October 13, 2010 at 10:57 am |
  522. Jacob

Because they are bigger doesn't mean you will automatically lose, and you may come out with the win if you just try.

    October 13, 2010 at 11:01 am |
  523. Bailey

I think telling the players that they weren't going to play is like telling them if there's something you don't think you can do don't do it. If you had a younger sibling, you wouldn't tell them just because the stakes are higher means you shouldn't try and do your best. It was totally uncalled for that they didn't play the game I think that was a HUGE mistake on their part.

    October 13, 2010 at 11:03 am |
  524. Nicole

I think they should've probably played the game to just have fun. In every game, that is the goal, not to be the winner or loser. It's okay if you get hurt in a sport, because one day you probably will.

    October 13, 2010 at 11:03 am |
  525. Neisha

It football what do you expect. If you were REAL football players you would just play and have fun, not worry about being crushed

    October 13, 2010 at 11:13 am |
  526. Sam

Its just sad when you don't even try, because if you don't try you just fail!

    October 13, 2010 at 11:15 am |
  527. Keaton

We recently had some parents not dress their kids for a JFL game because they had a 6 ft. 8th grader that was sending kids to the hospital because he could overpower them so easily, broken arms, collar bone, concussions, ect.

    October 13, 2010 at 11:16 am |
  528. Ruben

i think they should have played. It is teaching them that when a big problem arises, you quit.

    October 13, 2010 at 11:28 am |
  529. Katie

They should have taken on the other team. If you sign up to play football, you are signing up for tackling and whatever else is thrown at you in the game. That's what football is all about. If St. George is concerned about keeping the kids safe, they shouldn't allow them to play this game in the first place.

    October 13, 2010 at 11:33 am |
  530. Kirsten

i think it was smart of the coach to cancel the game because some of the players could have been hurt but some times you have to "take one for the team".

    October 13, 2010 at 11:38 am |
  531. Connor

I think St. John should have played the game because you can't win if you don't try! That was a bad call on the headmaster's part.

    October 13, 2010 at 11:45 am |
  532. jake!!!!

I think that they should've played the game because the players aren't going to get hurt they're wearing all those pads and the players that are out there playing obviously know what there doing or they wouldn't be on the team.

    October 13, 2010 at 11:47 am |
  533. Amanda

You cann't back down at a challgne

    October 13, 2010 at 12:08 pm |
  534. Steven

We all have to face tough obstacles in our life and we just have to face them and try our best to push through them.

    October 13, 2010 at 12:09 pm |
  535. Hailey

You sign up for a sport, you know what to expect. Your going to be injuried at some point. You practice to play and do your best, no one has the right to tell you that you can't just because they're bigger than you!

    October 13, 2010 at 1:11 pm |
  536. ryan

well if the players know thier was going to be better players and BIGGER players, why did they sign up?

    October 13, 2010 at 1:23 pm |
  537. natashia

    they should keep playing

    October 13, 2010 at 1:26 pm |
  538. Ashley

I personally think this is a ridiculous thing to do. I understand that they want to keep their students out of harms way, but not allowing them to play a football game just because the other team is better seems a little like a poor way to handle this. They might get hurt, but that's football, and that's how you get better.

    October 13, 2010 at 1:27 pm |
  539. tasha

i think that they made a good choice in calling it quits. its only a game and they should not die, playing it. its not about winning or losing. its about having fun, but yet playing your all.

    October 13, 2010 at 1:35 pm |
  540. Mister

If you play football you should expect to be facing teams that are bigger than you. If you dont want to take that challenge then quit!

    October 13, 2010 at 1:41 pm |
  541. Ian

...Winners never quit and quiters never win. I think that if St. George wants to win they need to learn from their losses.

    October 13, 2010 at 1:54 pm |
  542. Brandon

I Think People Should Not Quit...They Should Just Keep Going

    October 13, 2010 at 1:59 pm |
  543. Austin

i believe that not playing was a bad idea because later in life they will come to that situation too and make the wrong choices.

    October 13, 2010 at 2:05 pm |
  544. Trinity

It's probably better if they forfited, then practiced and practiced until they are the best they can be, then they can go out there and have fun,and even if they dont win, they wont be wounded to DEATH!

    October 13, 2010 at 2:06 pm |
  545. Dylan

I wouldent play eathier, dude they could die

    October 13, 2010 at 2:16 pm |
  546. Bryce

I would have played even though I might get hurt. They are just teaching there student to give up.

    October 13, 2010 at 2:16 pm |
  547. Ginger

I think it was bad sportsmanship because your going to be faced with problems in life and you have to deal with it. Also, when you sign up for football you know the possibility of injury.

    October 13, 2010 at 2:17 pm |
  548. alec

sports is just like your life and job so if you back down from stuff like that its just like getting fired

    October 13, 2010 at 2:20 pm |
  549. Jenelle

I think it was very smart for St. Micheals not to play or give the kids the decision. What if one of the players were to get severly injured? What if they could never walk again? I think they would regret the desicion to play. Even if they think they are capable of playing without being injured.

    October 13, 2010 at 2:22 pm |
  550. Dujuan

Hey i think personally that the coach was scared because football is a sport where they try to teach you not to quit

    October 13, 2010 at 2:32 pm |
  551. Austin

I think the desicion was bad because its teaching the players if somethings hard comes around dont even attempt it. And of course some people are going to get hurt no matter what the size of the players. Thats what football is

    October 13, 2010 at 3:00 pm |
  552. lexi

there will always be challenges in life and you can't just run away from them, you have to face them, just like this fotball team, just because this team is bigger or better, have a little faith, and put your skills to the test.

    October 13, 2010 at 3:17 pm |
  553. Kaitlin

I think that it was right to forfeit the game because I believe health before hobby

    October 13, 2010 at 3:21 pm |
  554. Brent

I think that they should of played the game because if you go threw all that hard work preparing for the game than why not play it, ya people could get hurt but thats football.

    October 13, 2010 at 3:22 pm |
  555. Jordan

Football isn't a girl sport they need to suck it up and play.

    October 13, 2010 at 3:25 pm |
  556. Riley

You have to play the game who cares if you get injured thats what football is all about your men come on put on your chin strap and play.

    October 13, 2010 at 3:27 pm |
  557. Trevor

You have to be tough and hit the weight room like all high schoolers do.

    October 13, 2010 at 3:28 pm |
  558. Kaitlin

.....but on the other hand, they could have been just as good, just too scared to play against really massive guys. 😀

    October 13, 2010 at 3:28 pm |
  559. Grant

ITS FOOTBALL!!!!! You dont see Chris Johnson quiting when he has to go up against Ray Lewis sure they are pros but its the same consept

    October 13, 2010 at 3:34 pm |
  560. monica

i think they should have made the decision as weather to play or not based on the skills on the kids. i mean if your child worked hard on something like a project she should present it its the same thing. they should play weather or they are good and how safe it is. if its not safe but they are really good i say let they play.

    October 13, 2010 at 3:35 pm |
  561. bethany

=) Many people get hurt every year playing football , and many beginner football players over look these injuries. They should get out there and play hard ,if they get hurt they'll injuries will heal.

    October 13, 2010 at 3:40 pm |
  562. wes

They should have kept on playing.Because obsticals are ment to be overcome not to be scared of

    October 13, 2010 at 3:41 pm |
  563. Grant

YOU SHOULD NEVER QUIT!!!!!!!!!!!! Pro teams dont give up if the other team is stacked. BE A MAN!!!!!!!!!! 🙂

    October 13, 2010 at 3:45 pm |
  564. cody

i would have had them play because you by forfeiting is teaching them to back down when something seems impossible

    October 13, 2010 at 3:46 pm |
  565. Aleksandar

I think it is good that they didnt want to play its just a game, and they donnt need to play it isnt requiered to play. If they dont know how to play or just doesnt want who should care.

    October 13, 2010 at 3:49 pm |
  566. Nate

Safety is important but dont quit be scaredy cat and quit on purpose.

    October 13, 2010 at 4:02 pm |
  567. Halle

The school is promoting bad sportsmanship. The students will think that when something challenging comes up, they'll just quit. Playing sports is to take the risk of getting hurt and have fun in the game no matter if you lose or win! You're there to have fun!!

    October 13, 2010 at 4:06 pm |
  568. Matthew

OK! You go on a TEAM to play a sport. This football people! BE A MAN!

    October 13, 2010 at 4:11 pm |
  569. Peter

When facing a hard conflict you must first not only think of safety but you must also remenber that there are some peple who enjoy a challenge but to give up without even trying, does not seem fair

    October 13, 2010 at 4:11 pm |
  570. david

the coach should care he is getting payed to win games and if you dont take risks then they wont play and the coach will loose his job for not winning games, so i think he should have played and see what happens. plus it is part of football to get hit and to hit others its just how to play.

    October 13, 2010 at 4:26 pm |
  571. Victoria

I see the problem both ways. I think the did the wrong thing because they train the players to actually play, not to just quit. I also see it as a good thing because they wanted to keep their players from getting badly hurt.

    October 13, 2010 at 4:31 pm |
  572. Ben

I think it was a good idea to forfit the game because there could have a serius injury.

    October 13, 2010 at 4:36 pm |
  573. Alexa

When it comes to football you gotta man up and play the game!

    October 13, 2010 at 4:45 pm |
  574. Amanda

I think it is bad sportmanship to the players that they can not play because the principle said that they backed down.

    October 13, 2010 at 4:53 pm |
  575. kyle

i don't think they should have given up, the players should at least try to win you cant win if you don't try

    October 13, 2010 at 4:55 pm |
  576. Alex

They should play. All they are doing is teaching their students to back down from an impossible challenge.

    October 13, 2010 at 5:00 pm |
  577. GIGI

there will be up's and down'si think that its ok to quit some times but when you have to run you always look back and see what your running from, if you dont then you will always be running.

    October 13, 2010 at 5:08 pm |
  578. Zachariah

They pull them out when things get tough? What are they going to do in the future, it gets tough back down. I think they should of had taken the chance and try to win and play hard and what happens ,happens.

    October 13, 2010 at 5:17 pm |
  579. Bryce

It's a game of football it's not safe, your teaching if something or someone is bigger than you back down, and forget about it, just suck it up and play.

    October 13, 2010 at 5:17 pm |
  580. Hunter

Yes, safety is a concern when playing sports, but at least try. Maybe the team is really clumsy. As the saying goes: "You'll always miss 100% of the shots you didn't take."

    October 13, 2010 at 5:19 pm |
  581. Maverick

I think it's dumb to not play if the school has a football team they play, even if they lose. If they forfeit they are teaching the players to not take on a challenge.

    October 13, 2010 at 5:33 pm |
  582. Lily

I think that they should have played the game, and tried their best.

    October 13, 2010 at 5:39 pm |
  583. Ammar

In athletics there will always be a risk. But a team should always have heart and courage to take on someone bigger than you. If you keep forfeiting to a bigger team, how do you expect to get better?

    October 13, 2010 at 5:42 pm |
  584. Jen

Football is football, no matter who your playing. And foirfeting that game is telling that whole school that whenever things seem rough or dangerous, to just give up. In the real world, they will have to do things that are dangerous or risky. That's just life....

    October 13, 2010 at 5:43 pm |
  585. Mitchell

winning is more than taking home a trophy, it's hanging in there when you're about to quit, it's hanging in there when you can get by with less.

    October 13, 2010 at 5:48 pm |
  586. Jordan

They did that right thing by forfeiting, It's better being safe then being hurt.

    October 13, 2010 at 5:53 pm |
  587. Ali

I you ever read the book S.O.R Loosers, the team doesn't give up. Their first game they lost 32 to nothing. That teaches you that you will fall in life, but you can get right back up. If you are not prepared, or taught to back down when the going gets rough, then you won't be ready for the real life that this world holds. It will through things at you that you won't see comming, and you have to fight your way through it sometimes. This coach is teaching them to back down when they can't handle a harder situation.

    October 13, 2010 at 5:53 pm |
  588. Reagan

I think they should have played. By not playing your saying you backing out and you don't think you can play against other teams bigger than you. They are teaching them a bad lesson. Let them do something they love!

    October 13, 2010 at 5:56 pm |
  589. Britt

It was not the best idea to forfit the game. The football team should have taken a chance. Who knows, St. George's could have won. 🙂

    October 13, 2010 at 5:57 pm |
  590. Maddy!

I think they should of taken the challenge because who knows an incredible miricale could of happened and they could of one but now there is a big problem and they are on the news

    October 13, 2010 at 6:09 pm |
  591. Kelsey

It's great that they're worried about their safety. But, it wasn't smart to make them just quit. Who ever said, when i doubt just drop out?

    October 13, 2010 at 6:10 pm |
  592. Samantha

Sporrtsmanship is very important but a lot of teams don't show it.

    October 13, 2010 at 6:13 pm |
  593. Lexus

I have mixed feelings for them to forfeit. I think it was right because they could of easily gotten seriously injured, but I also think it wasn't right because they practice for a reason. That reason is to play, not forfeit.

    October 13, 2010 at 6:14 pm |
  594. Victoria

I think that that thy should of just suck it up an played because it would of been better to take the consquences. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN JUST FINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    October 13, 2010 at 6:24 pm |
  595. malissa

The school is showing kids that if something is bigger than you then you back down. They also show that if somsomething is a challenge then you shouldn`t face it. Just beacuse you are afraid to get hurt by something that comes naturally then don`t play that sport

    October 13, 2010 at 6:28 pm |
  596. Allie

I think they should suck it up and play, they knew what they where gonna get into when they signed up for it so play the game ! But if something serious comes up, like life or death then you have my permission to jump in ! xD

    October 13, 2010 at 6:34 pm |
  597. Christian

It's just high school football. The lessons of life can be found in thousands upon thousands of other places. This is a matter of safety, and the school has the right in trying to protect them. If someone would get hurt facing these guys, I bet the tables would turn...

    October 13, 2010 at 6:41 pm |
  598. Abbi

What the headmaster is teaching the football players is that when the going gets tough the tough get going.

    October 13, 2010 at 6:41 pm |
  599. dashawn

i think it good that they back down.they could have got hurt.

    October 13, 2010 at 6:57 pm |
  600. Brooklyn

Everyone knows that not everyone is your size. They were right to take safty percautions but it wasn't very fair to the other team. And you know bigger is not always better.

    October 13, 2010 at 7:01 pm |
  601. Matt

I think that you should play no matter how big the team is.

    October 13, 2010 at 7:09 pm |
  602. Nathan

Safety is important when playing sports. If people don't play by the rules somebody could get hurt. Also if people don't have good sportsmanship it often leads to a bad attitude for the rest of the day.

    October 13, 2010 at 7:18 pm |
  603. Morgan

I really don't think they should have backed out because there are lots of things in life you can't back out of.

    October 13, 2010 at 7:25 pm |
  604. Ross

I've had friends who broke their bones to not-so-big kids. In fact, some are smaller. What makes you guys think that big kids won't hurt the forfeiting team?

    October 13, 2010 at 7:27 pm |
  605. Nicole

I think that even though the school is acting on their best intentions,
the students have a right to say whether or not they want to play,
that should be true for all schools.

    October 13, 2010 at 7:29 pm |

I am a soccer player on a small team so most teams are bigger than us. We NEVER quit though and we usually come out with the win!

    October 13, 2010 at 7:39 pm |
  607. Nicole

What they are doing is saying that if the odds are stacked against
you, all you need to do is back and It's all going to be okay.
Even if the school denies that, they can't deny the fact that they are
sending the message that they are superior to the students and that bigger is better. None of the great figures in history got anywhere by
letting their safety getting in the way of their dreams.

    October 13, 2010 at 7:41 pm |
  608. Annie

Forfeiting for safety issues gives a terrible example of sportsmanship. You have discouraged other football players. 😦

    October 13, 2010 at 7:44 pm |
  609. jacob

yah well they are baby and if they come up to something big they will just give up that is what they are saying to the students. And when i go to any school im not going there they should just suck it up. play the game i do and we play teams bigger than us we still play

    October 13, 2010 at 7:49 pm |
  610. Jackson

They should have overcome that challenge. My High school wouldn't ever back down.

    October 13, 2010 at 7:51 pm |
  611. LUCAS

I think they should of never forfetied because they should of tryed there best. Just the way they look it dosen't mean that they are good. I think St.George's team acually mightev had a good chance of wining. If I was on St.Goerge's football team I would say to them you no what gies I think we should try to beet them because we are still a strong team but if we do lose It is OK because we tryed are best!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A team like St.Goerge's team for football should not have a football team because they forfeited and I would say to them never give up just try your best and go out and show them how good you are.I would say to the athore team that we no that we are better then you. oh yah then why did you gies forfeiet then. Because you gies look to strong but then we stoped and said to the team we should not forfeit because I think every buddie gets to be a winer but it is OK to lose some times but we are still a very very very Strong Team!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    October 13, 2010 at 7:57 pm |
  612. Alec

Once you learn to play safe it may lower the risk of getting hurt.

    October 13, 2010 at 7:58 pm |
  613. Tommi

I think that they are teaching them to give up when it gets tough and thats not right.

    October 13, 2010 at 8:01 pm |
  614. samantha

i think for that school not doing that football gam means that the are lames.Schools are trying to teach stundents that the can win if you try but this school is telling stundent they aren't good enough to play that game. that school has a big promble!!!

    October 13, 2010 at 8:12 pm |
  615. Chris

I think that being safe is important but at the same time, I think that being a good sport is a lot better, because the kids should learn how to play, and if they want to be a profesional they should get used to playing big players, and they will be faster then them anyway, so they have a chance to win, so why not play and see what happened.

    October 13, 2010 at 8:23 pm |
  616. Daquinton

I don't think it was right for them to forfeit the game. When you play football there are going to be bigger teams. That doesn't mean you won't get hurt, but you can get hurt playing any sport or team.

    October 13, 2010 at 8:36 pm |
  617. Josh

I think they need to suck up and face it. If a team is challenging you don't back down; stand up to your fears. At least, you won't be called a chicken.

    October 13, 2010 at 8:38 pm |
  618. Hal

The team players knew that when they signed up for football, that injuries and danger were part of football! By forfeiting the game, the school headmaster tried to protect them from exactly what they like to do - play the game!

    October 13, 2010 at 8:48 pm |
  619. karlie

I think it was not good idea. they are basicly wasting all those hours of practice. they should have still played even if they knew they were going to lose.

    October 13, 2010 at 8:53 pm |
  620. amber

i think they shouldve played. obviusly their coach isnt very smart. hes teaching them to just give up if they think something MIGHT be to big to handle.

    October 13, 2010 at 9:05 pm |
  621. Hoching

There are problems way bigger than football. If we cant tackle the little ones, what makes you think we can handle the bigger and more important ones?

    October 13, 2010 at 9:25 pm |
  622. kalui

I think they should just keep playing only because when you say you will play a sport you play it and don`t give up just like everyone says "Dont give up". Just because the other team has bigger player the should keep moving on.

    October 13, 2010 at 9:26 pm |
  623. jaquez

i think the should have played, safety or no safety its football someones gonna get hurt regardless

    October 13, 2010 at 9:27 pm |
  624. Madyson

I think that they are showing these kids that when you come to a problem you don't think you can face to just back down even if in the end their is a lesson or a reward.

    October 13, 2010 at 9:27 pm |
  625. Austen

I think they were right to not play, many have been saying that it's poor sportsmanship but which would you rather have injured players or a forfeited game? Think of it in a parent, player, or coach's view.

    October 13, 2010 at 9:34 pm |
  626. Mason

    LET THEM PLAY!

    October 13, 2010 at 9:51 pm |
  627. McKenzie

i think it is showing them that they can't take on a challange and that they are not good enough to play aginst the other team.

    October 13, 2010 at 9:57 pm |
  628. Amanda

Showing doing what the priciple did was wrong was wrong, because when I was in forth grade I would always tell my friend how was scared. I would always say right before every game I would tell her "when the going gets tough we get tougher" which has been said a million times but it is true when we go throw challenges we don't back down we should look it in the eye and 'say you don't scare me.' Then try your hardest and if you don't succeed try and try again.

    October 13, 2010 at 9:58 pm |
  629. Simon

What's the point of SAFETY gear? To keep the players SAFE.

    October 13, 2010 at 10:38 pm |
  630. Tia

It doesnt really matter its their choice to not participate in the game so we should respect that 🙂

    October 13, 2010 at 10:38 pm |
  631. Matt

What the coach did was terrible and put sham upon the team and their school. If one player decided that if the players were to big or that they might get hurt in playing this game they should back out. Also if they play this team and they go into the play offs and the other team does to then they would learn what they do and how to beat them.

    October 13, 2010 at 10:45 pm |
  632. Matt

i think they should have played since there's no shame in losing only learning from your mistakes and becoming a better team

    October 13, 2010 at 10:48 pm |
  633. PAIGE

As long as the parents and student athletes are aware of the risks of football (which they should be aware before even going out for the sport) than I do not think it was right to forfeit. As many have already mentioned, this just teaches kids to give up when the challenge ahead looks difficult and almost impossible to beat.

    October 13, 2010 at 10:48 pm |
  634. Caroline

Personally if they cannot play football the player should not have tried out. They need to simply suck it in and get out there. They never know maybe they could actually win if they try.

    October 13, 2010 at 10:55 pm |
  635. Meagan

I Think That If You Were To Sign Up To Be On A Certain SportIr On A Team Of Any Kind That You Should Play No Matter How Great The Team Is, I Think That If You Sign Up For Something That You Commit Yourself To Trying Your Best To Win And It Wouldn't Matter If You Were To Win Or Lose. Your Just Supposed To Have Fun While Doing It.

    October 13, 2010 at 11:19 pm |

Football should be played for the the fun of it and not for the winning or the losing

    October 14, 2010 at 7:17 am |

i think they were just scared and were giveing their students the wrong idea. i say SUCK IT UP!!!!!

    October 14, 2010 at 9:19 am |
  638. Stephen

If you sign up for football you should know your gonna get beat down by some 250 lineman. Do think that Eli Manning and Tom Brady got to where they are by giving up?

    October 14, 2010 at 9:37 am |
  639. Wade

Well Cnn Student News, my American Govt class formed the hypothesis that the young lads shouldve indeed tested their strength and will, and play the game. LET THEM PLAY!!!!

  640. Austin

When you face something in life that is harder or more than you think that you can handle you dont just give up!! I am a very competative person and dont think that the smaller team should have gave up. I was a sophomore in football and basketball when I became a starter I was alot smaller and not as strong as the other opponents, but my coaches taught me to never give up and never stop trying!

    October 14, 2010 at 9:53 am |
  641. !$@@C

I play football on a team that is not very succsesful, so i know what it is like going against huge odds. One thing i was taught was never give up, never give in. When the odds are against you, you can't quit, Pain is temporary, Pride is forever

    October 14, 2010 at 10:44 am |
  642. Heath

Give up, it's not worth injury, when the odds our against you, you go in a hole and cry

  644. Michelle

Coming from a school that's nationally recognized for our football team, I think it's unfair that they do that. If your going to play football, it's all about contact. Now your teaching your team that they can give up on things just because they look challenging... Even if it's apart of what you signed up to do!

    October 14, 2010 at 12:02 pm |
  645. Brittany

They should have thought more carefully because they are setting a bad example for the players. It isn't the size that matters, I bet if they didn't forfet they would have won. But even if they didn't win if they played they would still get a sense of acomplishment.

    October 14, 2010 at 12:21 pm |
  646. jackson

I think not letting them play teaches the players and the other people in the community that when not playing things that get bigger and better shows that they are week and are too much of a coward to do anything when it gets rough. They should play.

    October 14, 2010 at 12:58 pm |
  647. Paige

Yes it was right that they forfeited for safety. I know my team has forfeited for health reasons. If they need to then they should. It was a good call.

    October 14, 2010 at 1:09 pm |
  648. Marie

I personally do not think the team should have forfeited the game. Mostly because it teaches the players and even the young children in the stands that if it looks hard just give up. In my school the junior high boys had a football game, and the other team was huge compared to our boys, they lost, but they never gave up. That is what the school faculty should teach their students, because in the real world we need to be positive and not give up. Forfeiting that game tells the players that people don’t believe in you and that will bring down their self-esteem. Faculty need to support their students and believe that saying almost every school has hanging on a poster, “never give up”. Whatever the odds could have been NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE!

    October 14, 2010 at 1:26 pm |
  649. Kaitlyn

This would have been a hot topic in earlier years when football was just starting mainly because there was less protection, less football pads and rules, etc. Now, playing against a "better" team should not be an issue because now we have stricter rules, better equipment, and hopefully the most sportsman-like players.

    October 14, 2010 at 2:26 pm |
  650. Bauck

when atheletes sign up for a sport they are aware of the possibilities of an injury. There will always be bigger and better players our there somewhere, so never back down.

    October 14, 2010 at 3:03 pm |
  651. jimmy

i dont think forfeiting was a the best option for this football team. the reason you signed up to play was for the challenge.

    October 14, 2010 at 3:42 pm |
  652. megan

i think that if football players had better hi teck helmets thier would be less cuncusions and if that doesnt work then they need start making softer fields.if they can do that then more kids would play thinking it was safe. i think that athlets would be smarter to and not have to go through that bad feeling.

    October 14, 2010 at 3:44 pm |
  653. Haruka

I didn't even know about that game much less watch it. In my opinion, safety should always come first. Getting teased at school is better than getting injured permanently.

    October 14, 2010 at 3:45 pm |
  654. david

I think football should be banned from the usa it is dangerous and situtions like this make me feel more uncomfortable abort the sport.thinking about this plus the injuries just make me shudder even if i was fit

    October 14, 2010 at 3:58 pm |
  655. Meagan

I think if you are doing football you should learn to face many fears and keep trying i think they should of went and done the game even if they were hurt but need to be football players, strong

    October 14, 2010 at 4:13 pm |
  656. Alison

I think that they should not have quit. What would happen if Martin Luther King just quit because he was having a hard time? There would not be fair treatment in america. The thing is, you never know what could have been.

    October 14, 2010 at 4:47 pm |
  657. Chase

Did M.J quit when he was bashed with accusations? Did Columbus quit when he almost starved looking for new land? I should think not! Although safety is important, how are these kids going to learn the hardships of life by being taught to quit as kids??

    October 14, 2010 at 4:49 pm |
  658. Kaylen

It's stupid that they forfeited; risks come with every sport, no matter what it is. If you've signed up/tried out for a team, then you've accepted that risk and agreed that you are willing to play, no matter the odds. The important thing is that you tried, not that you won or lost.

    October 14, 2010 at 4:59 pm |
  659. Destiny

just becuase they are big doesnt mean you dont have a chance to win but do need to be careful about what happens. some people are big doesnt mean you need to give up right away.

    October 14, 2010 at 5:00 pm |
  660. Carson

I think they could've tried, there is always a better team, but they should take on a challenge. It's always good to get better and get more experienced.

    October 14, 2010 at 5:04 pm |
  661. Lily

I don't think forfeiting is the best thing to do in that situation. You should stick with it, because once you play that team you wont have to worry about other teams and how tough they are. You've played a tough team so you know what to expect.

    October 14, 2010 at 5:06 pm |
  662. Amy

I don't think it was right of the coach to forfiet the game just because he thought the boys were too big! It isn't fair to the players and to everyone else. Life has hard lessons and you have to nip them in the bud and face it to get through them. If the coach made the decision based on his players oppinion..he shouldn't have given in and still had them play just to see how they did but now they will never know!!

    October 14, 2010 at 5:09 pm |
  663. Lily

put on your big boy pants and play. SUCK IT UP!!!!!!!!!!

    October 14, 2010 at 5:09 pm |

I think that by not doing the game they showed that when things get hard that you just give up and keep trucking.

    October 14, 2010 at 5:45 pm |
  665. hannah

I think if theres a risk of getting hurt then they should play it safe by not playing at all.

    October 14, 2010 at 6:24 pm |

i think they should have played so they can learn from there mistakes, not just back down and be chickens

    October 14, 2010 at 6:48 pm |

they should of played they should suck it up and should of played the game

    October 14, 2010 at 8:00 pm |
  668. De'kendre

There are no baby's in football, so if they are baby's they need to quit the team. you don't give up cause there bigger, so what if they go to high school there are gonna be big kids so if they don't get hit now its gonna be worse when high school comes around.

    October 14, 2010 at 8:09 pm |
  669. Tamara

I dont think they should've forfeited because schools should encourage there schools to play and have fun with sports and to be tough not to forefeit.

    October 14, 2010 at 8:11 pm |
  670. Maria

I think that the coach was wrong to not have his team play the game. It is bad sportmanship, just because the other team is bigger you shouldn't be intimaded.

    October 14, 2010 at 8:43 pm |
  671. Kristi

I say that kids who sign up to be on a football team should actually PLAY I don't think they should practice all year then sit on the sidelines.

    October 14, 2010 at 8:52 pm |
  672. Alex

i think that the St. George's couch was wrong to foreit the football game because he should have just gave the other team a chance to play against his team.the couch said the other team looked too big and too strong, that may not be true because like they say "you cant judge a book by its cover."

    October 14, 2010 at 8:53 pm |
  673. Alexis

Players know the risks to the sport they play. They can't back down because someones bigger. Bigger doesnt always mean better!

    October 14, 2010 at 9:04 pm |
  674. Suezanne

Well I would have to say no. Because my school has a football team and players have been hurt before but they have all turned out okay and they are back on the playing field now!

    October 14, 2010 at 9:15 pm |
  675. morrigan

you do your best and play.

    October 14, 2010 at 9:22 pm |
  676. Austin

I don’t think that they should have forfeited the game. That is like admitting defeat without trying. Playing tougher teams makes you better in all sports, that should push you to try harder. Just firefighting like that puts a whole different meaning to the phrase “when the going gets tough the tough get going.”

    October 14, 2010 at 9:31 pm |
  677. Lupita

I believe that backing out of a game just makes it look like you are not up to the challange. Maybe they would have lost but trying would have been helpful. The worst part about falling is not falling itself but not getting back up to try agian. You should always try instead of giving up. Never give up! Always try your best no matter win or loose.

    October 14, 2010 at 9:51 pm |
  678. Christian

The school has the right to forfeit the game. And the people who did were looking out for their students. Not their athletes.

That's why I think they should have forfeited the game. A lot of schools try to win football games for the glory of their school name but never care about the students themselves till they win a title.

Overall its nice to see a school actually look out for its students not because they're athletes but because they're kids and it's their responsibility to keep them safe.

    October 14, 2010 at 10:27 pm |
  679. Hannah

I do not think that the team should have played the game. Football is a physical sport, and they need to deal with it, and play the games. The coaches are sending the message, that if in life something bigger and badder comes to you, you can just back down and quit.

    October 14, 2010 at 10:32 pm |
  680. Braeden

I think that the players should be allowed to choose weather they want to play or not. I mean really-It`s football!!!! Its hard, physical, and painful. I play football myself and we [the team] aren`t afraid to play the best team in the county.

    October 14, 2010 at 10:42 pm |
  681. alex

i don't thin it was right to give up like that i mean yes they are big but it doesn't matter in the face of adversity you don't need to give up rise and rise again until the lambs (the smaller football player) become lions (the bigger football players) never give up never back down and the school is teaching them to give up and that's not right

    October 14, 2010 at 11:45 pm |
  682. Paul

Well usually safety comes first, so i guess they should have gone with being safe.

    October 15, 2010 at 8:29 am |
  683. Samantha

I think it was a smart decision to forfeit over safety. Players could have been wicked hurt, but it was the best call!

    October 15, 2010 at 8:34 am |
  684. Nicole

i think that they should have gone out there and play their hardest. A lot of athletes get hurt every year. An injury can be healed, a game can't be made up.

    October 15, 2010 at 8:42 am |
  685. Zach

In every game their is a chance of getting hurt, if they are afraid of getting hurt in this game then they must be afraid they will get hurt in the other games as well so why even have a football program?

    October 15, 2010 at 10:50 am |
  686. Boby

play the game, dont give up, have NO FEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    October 15, 2010 at 10:53 am |
  687. Tom

They should have played forfeiting was a bad choice its just teaching them that if its to hard dont do it if somethings to hard in life and you back down your never going to get anywhere

    October 15, 2010 at 10:53 am |
  688. matthew

i think that they should have played. I mean when they join the football team they know that it is a contact sport so why not play.

    October 15, 2010 at 10:55 am |
  689. Clive

I think a coach is supposed to do whatever is in the best interest for his players. If that means protect them from a team by forfeiting that’s what he has to do. I might have let the guys play if I was in his situation, but if the coach did what he thought was best by protecting his players I can’t disagree with that.

    October 15, 2010 at 11:54 am |
  690. Taylor

This just teaches the kids that when the going gets tough, you quit. They should have played the game, even if they lost, they still would have tried their best!

    October 15, 2010 at 12:29 pm |
  691. Rlyn

I think it's better to have more safety measures than not to let athlete play.....
And i think that letting athletes to play sports that they want or they're passionate about could increase their positivity....
and its better to teach kids about it and let them explore their own sport

    October 15, 2010 at 2:42 pm |
  692. Dani

To make safety gear more safe then they should start adding more padding in the helmets.

    October 15, 2010 at 2:46 pm |
  693. Alannah

i think that it is a good idea to have safer sportsmanship because it will reduce the risk of players getting injured.

I think that coach knows something we aren't seeing so I believe he knows more then hes telling there has to be some really good reason to just give up like that.

    October 15, 2010 at 2:52 pm |
  697. Travis

Football is a CONTACT sport.... Learn to hit someone in the game.

    October 15, 2010 at 4:04 pm |
  698. Johnny

I think they should just play the game. Its not win or lose, just good sportsman ship. Yet thats just part of the game.

    October 15, 2010 at 4:06 pm |
  699. Izzy

I think they were right to forfiet...someone could've gotten hurt if they didn't, and then everyone would leave thinking the wrong things about games and sportsmanship. Sportsmanship is very important to me, and sometimes it takes someone with real guts to be able to use it when no one else can.

    October 15, 2010 at 4:10 pm |
  700. Mike

They should have never forfited, they should of plaed like a man and dealed with it.

    October 15, 2010 at 4:22 pm |
  701. Michael

I think that the team should have played and you never know if they would have won.

    October 15, 2010 at 4:24 pm |
  702. Daniel

Man, I think it was NOT ok to not play the game. It's because I, as one person think that tho other team would not go and crush them. Also, now it puts a burned memory in the football team's head. So, if they or one of them ever becomes a coach, they will look back at HighSchool or something.

  704. caitlin

I think it was important that the miners were rescued and that they are safe and they are being taken care of, and also people need to suport them!!!!!

  705. Gracie

Just because the team was bigger does not mean to quit. How will you get better? How will you learn? Life isn't perfect. You can't always win. How do you know that you'll lose?

    October 15, 2010 at 9:51 pm |
  706. Alex

I don't think they should have quit that game becaus the students signed up to play football and the parents know that so I think it was a bad idea to quit.

    October 15, 2010 at 11:02 pm |
  707. Leo

I think I woud be very happy !

    October 16, 2010 at 10:11 am |
  708. nick

I would have made them play it is outrageous to make the team forfit .The coach is setting a great example for the team (i'm being super sarcastic) jst back down ,or run awaay ,or just simiply quit when u face a challenge in life......Makes no sense!

    October 16, 2010 at 11:16 am |
  709. Kim

They should've taken the challenge they could of won big.

    October 16, 2010 at 1:46 pm |
  710. olivia

I think that that all football players should have to wear safety gear in a game and if they don't they should be given a warning, but after that if they still don't, they should have to sit out the next game. SAFETY FIRST!! 🙂

    October 16, 2010 at 8:30 pm |
  711. Hannah

I think they should have played. I think it was pretty rude to forfiet. It was showing disrespect towards the other team. Good sportsmanship means you play every game as hard as you can and you win some, you lose some and either way be excited that you did your best!

    October 16, 2010 at 10:18 pm |
  712. Susan

I think that if the game was played, the St. George's players could have had broken bones or even spinal cord damage.

    October 16, 2010 at 11:17 pm |
  713. Kilsoon

When the Chilean miners came out of the mine, I felt as if I would cry. I think that the Chilean miners was a case that showed people that anyone can overcome hard times like those people.

    October 17, 2010 at 12:39 am |
  714. Carlotta

All this B.S. about facing tough obstacles in life is infuriating! This is not some hypothetical issue. The message that St. George is putting out there is that the health & safety of their students trumps everything, as it should. "A man is a fool who sacrifices his health for any other reason".
Yes, it's football (at least what WE call football), but it's a barbaric sport to begin with! I'm thrilled that at least the medical community is beginning to recognize that. It's time you Troglodytes all woke up & got a little enlightenment, & quit getting such a kick out of watching the Gladiators go at each other in the arena!!

    October 17, 2010 at 2:58 pm |
  715. Danielle

St.George's needs to suck it up and be proud if they chip a tooth are break a leg, because even if they do get beat up they know they tryed and that's all that matters!

    October 17, 2010 at 4:51 pm |
  716. Olivia

I think that it is ridiculous that the principal is not letting the children play! Aren't we taught in school to go for what we want, no matter how absurd? Although I understand where the principal is coming from, I don't agree with it.

    October 17, 2010 at 7:10 pm |
  717. Erin

I think they should,nt had forfited the game yeah you care about the kids safety but the game is all about fun if they forfit every game that they are facing big kids they will never be able to feel like they are actually in football.

    October 17, 2010 at 7:25 pm |
  718. emmy

i say that they shouldn't of done that, forfeiting i mean what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. what message is that sending to the players to give up when the going gets tuff i say that the tuff get going.

    October 17, 2010 at 9:41 pm |
  719. Samantha

I deffinitly agree upon safety. It is really important. But if they go out there to play, they should play. I mean, come on, they're adults for crying out loud. They're not going to ball if they get a scratch on the knee.

    October 17, 2010 at 10:13 pm |
  720. Kellen

It is the true meaning of sportsmanship to play out a game even if you are afraid. Although safety must come first, this is one of those times when you've just got to step up and make risks.

    October 17, 2010 at 11:49 pm |
  721. dustin

i thank that they should try to play.but if they what safte then yes they should ouit

    October 18, 2010 at 10:18 am |
  722. tymaine

i think that they should have played the game because it would have been fun and i like competion.also if they get hurt that some times happends because it's football

    October 18, 2010 at 10:49 am |
  723. Daniel

They should have played instead of being scared. Its football, you are going to get hurt some which is part of being tough.

    October 18, 2010 at 11:31 am |
  724. antonio

i think its not right that the other team forfeit because the other team was bigger.if you gonna play a game theres always gunna be a bigger person then you.

    October 18, 2010 at 11:33 am |
  725. kirk

I dont think that the coach should have fprfitted the game just because the other team was bigger that theres. im in middle school and i play for a different football team and some of the kids were in high school and the were bigger than us and we won so to me that makes no sense

    October 18, 2010 at 11:34 am |
  726. Morgan

I belive that if you are on a sports team you should always play because it doesn't matter what size they are as long as you have fun. It doesn't matter if you win or lose.

    October 18, 2010 at 11:34 am |
  727. brendan

I think that it was stupid because if I got hurt I would of dealt with it and if I lost than I would think that theres more games to play.

    October 18, 2010 at 12:47 pm |
  728. norvell

they should play and have fun playing to lose weight

    October 18, 2010 at 12:48 pm |
  729. mahdiah

They should keep playing it don't matter they big or not it just a game i seem it was NFL game but ain't be stuff and play it just for fun and show people you can play thats it.

    October 18, 2010 at 12:49 pm |
  730. yves

I think that its teaching the kids that if you are faced with a challenge then give up and who knows you might come out of it with a win and i am in football so no matter what you have a challenge and i think they should just do the match so the kids can just play and do there best. To me its just stupid that they would do that and football is having challenges to overcome and thats what makes the victory so much sweeter

    October 18, 2010 at 12:51 pm |
  731. erik

i would tell them to play cause that would make them look bad if they backed down and not play that would disappoint every one.

    October 18, 2010 at 12:54 pm |
  732. Justin

    I think its REALLY!!!!

    October 18, 2010 at 1:11 pm |
  733. Cassie

I think it was a close call. They were called off because of the bulky players but, they shouldn't be tought that when the going gets ruff, quit. Next time they should just toughen up and play the game!

    October 18, 2010 at 1:12 pm |
  734. Justin

    NEVER QUIT EVER!!!!!!!!!

    October 18, 2010 at 1:12 pm |
  735. DAVID

i think they should have played the game because kids shoudent be taught to give up when things get tough. just because the kids were biggier than them.

    October 18, 2010 at 1:15 pm |
  736. Francis

its just like math. the teachers always say you shouldnt be scared of big problems.

    October 18, 2010 at 1:20 pm |
  737. Marzuwq and Alex

I think in the name of sportsmanship they should have played because in life you'll always come up to a bigger callenge and when that happens you tackle that callenge.

    October 18, 2010 at 1:21 pm |
  738. lissette

The coach is trying to tell them that any time something tough comes up to call it quits. After they put there time and effort into practices.

    October 18, 2010 at 1:22 pm |
  739. Marissa

Quiters never prosper and the adults shouldn't be teaching the kids to give up.

    October 18, 2010 at 5:08 pm |
  740. Jacob

I myself a football player think it was alittle "chicken" of them to forefeit.Thats the chance of playing football. You might get hurt. Also I think it might set a bad example that if there is a tough problem you can always"walk" around it.

    October 18, 2010 at 6:56 pm |
  741. Miles

When you join a sport team, you should remember that there will always be a team or athlete that is bigger than you. It's just a part of playing the sport.

    October 18, 2010 at 11:13 pm |
  742. Evan

Safety is important, but I think it wasn't respectful to Lawrence Academy. Sports are all about fun, and if you made a game in your season, you can't have fun if you don't play it.

    October 19, 2010 at 6:51 am |
  743. Evan

It would be unfair to Lawrence Academy to not play, because they will probably use this easy win to let some of the 2nd and 3rd string players play, that way everyone has fun, and since you deprive them of an easy game, some of those not so great players can't play.

    October 19, 2010 at 6:55 am |
  744. Zach

This is a dumb idea i understand protecting your players from injury but whats that teaching the players? When your faced with a problem just quit?

    October 19, 2010 at 7:36 am |
  745. Kurumi

I think they should have still tried to win. Football has so many injuries in the beginning so why forfeit for safety when there's like no way to avoid an injury?

    October 19, 2010 at 8:34 am |
  746. Kirsten

Saftey does come first, but also why would you spend time working with the football boys and getting their hopes up on how well they are doing. Then when it comes to a game you embaress them by forgitting. The kids won't learn until they make a mistake.

    October 19, 2010 at 9:49 am |
  747. Justin

It's football, if you dont want to get hit dont play.

    October 19, 2010 at 9:50 am |
  748. Garrett

Your going to get hit in football. That is what the sport is all about. If you never get hit by a bigger kid, you will never become the bigger kid. Face your fears!!

    October 19, 2010 at 9:52 am |
  749. Maverick

Its called football smarts. If u dont want to get hit then dont play. The whole point of football is hitting people.

    October 19, 2010 at 9:54 am |
  750. Nick

Its dumb that they did that. They should of just went on with the football game and took it like a man.The whole team must be chickens even the coach. Thats all I have to say.

    October 19, 2010 at 9:55 am |
  751. Josh

They should have taken the challenge, it would be good for their team to try something that is a challenge. Who needs safety. ITS FOOTBALL. thats what all the padding is for.

    October 19, 2010 at 9:56 am |
  752. Ace

They made pads for football for a reason! They should've played because it doesnt prove anything! YOU CAN"T WIN ANYTHING IF YOU DON"T TRY!!!!

    October 19, 2010 at 9:56 am |
  753. Holly

I think that just because the other team is bigger doesn't mean they are better! Don't they have It seems like they are telling the kids that they aren't good enough to play that team, which seems wrong!

    October 19, 2010 at 9:56 am |
  754. Dakota

Take a challenge and be a man you fight to win and do your best FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT dont forget be a man!

    October 19, 2010 at 10:00 am |
  755. Doug

you should never ever teach kids to be quiters encourege them to be
    winners.

    October 19, 2010 at 10:02 am |
  756. sydney

just because the team is good dosent mean they have to forfit the game just because they dont want to lose. They could at least try.

    October 19, 2010 at 10:02 am |
  757. Lisa

I think that they should have played because having them forfeit is teaching them to give up when you have a tough challenge. They should have played because just cause they were bigger doesn't mean they were better so they could have beaten them.

    October 19, 2010 at 10:37 am |
  758. DYLAN

they should have played them. your parents tell you not to back down from afight but the schools is teaching them that if you have almost no change then to back dow.

    October 19, 2010 at 10:37 am |
  759. Wesley

The football players are on the team, so they should get to decide to take the rish, because they are the ones playing the game. The coach should not have forfeited without even asking the players about it.

    October 19, 2010 at 10:38 am |
  760. Sage

I don't think they should have forfited. Look at the 1995 National Championship. The Nebraska Cornhuskers wern't picked to win. You know what, they destroyed the Florida Gators. You never know what might happen. Just do your best.

    October 19, 2010 at 10:39 am |
  761. Mike

I myself am a football player and we have never forfeited. There were some pretty hard teams we faced and we did have some injuries. But that's part of sports. If you join a sport you are responsible for your injuries no one else. Because it was your choice to join the sport. So they shouldn't have forfieted the game.

    October 19, 2010 at 10:40 am |
  762. shad

NO! they were just scared to loose (our team has lost every game and we havent gave up), & our team would never forfeit a game, s othe players get to decide to play or not.

    October 19, 2010 at 10:40 am |
  763. Melissa

I'm not a big fan of football and think it is dangerous. Safety should always come first!

    October 19, 2010 at 10:41 am |
  764. Jessica

I personally think that the team shouldn't have forfeited. Forfeit just because the other team is bigger in size? Our school has had many times where the other players are larger and we wouldn't give up. The coaches are setting a bad example for the players, to just give up? Not a very good life lesson in these times.

    October 19, 2010 at 10:42 am |
  765. Briauna

I think that if you are a good player you should be able to play not sit out because you are to good. If you hgave a football team and you have people who have mussles and people who are like weasles the should face people who have there own kind of mussles and not people who are like the hulk.

    October 19, 2010 at 10:43 am |
  766. shad

NO! they were just scared to loose (our team has lost every game and we havent gave up), & our team would never forfeit a game, so the players get to decide to play or not.

    October 19, 2010 at 10:44 am |
  767. DreW

i think that if you play for a sport and practice evey day to play good. you shouldnt back down and forfit. i'm not going to go to a cross country meet and not run cuz there is a kid better then me there. i will still run, you have to like the sport. 🙂

    October 19, 2010 at 10:45 am |
  768. louis

I think that they should play for sportsmanship even if the team is biger and better doesn't mean you cann't win

    October 19, 2010 at 10:48 am |
  769. Steffi

They were the ones who went out for the sport in the first place and it is all ways good to take a challenge

    October 19, 2010 at 10:48 am |
  770. Mark

They should have played, because other wise it just shows that it's okay to back down when times get tough.

    October 19, 2010 at 11:28 am |
  771. ashley

I think they are wimps because that is just giving up and they will do that for the rest of their lives.

    October 19, 2010 at 11:28 am |
  772. Larry

i think that it was wrong to foreit the football game because it is teaching all of the football players to get scared when you face someone and to just give up for no reason.

    October 19, 2010 at 11:28 am |
  773. Samantha

I think that is unfair for the other team and for the players of the St. George team. I think it was wrong of them to back down, all they are teaching there students is to back down when it looks hard. If i had a child that was going to that school i would enroll them in a differnet school.

    October 19, 2010 at 11:29 am |
  774. Lynn

i think they should have played. There is always going to be someone bigger and better, but you made the choose to risk it before you started. You will never know if you can bet them if you never tried, just because someones bigger does not always mean they're better. Plus, its football your going to get bruised, suck it up and play your heart out, that's why you joined, right?

    October 19, 2010 at 11:30 am |
  775. Baily

I think they should have just played the game because it isn't fair for either teams to get ready to play and then just forfeit.

    October 19, 2010 at 11:30 am |
  776. Elizabeth

I think that they should not have forfited just because the other team was bigger. by doing that they are teaching students that when things get tough, just quit, never try.

    October 19, 2010 at 11:30 am |
  777. Wyatt

I belive the coaches should have asked the players if they wanted to play.

    October 19, 2010 at 11:32 am |
  778. Lloyd

Their is times where teams need to forfeit, like if the other team is hurting all their players. That is the right time to forfeit. But their is no need to forfeit before the game evn starts

    October 19, 2010 at 11:32 am |
  779. Jessica

They should have just played the game it is not fair to forfeit just cause they are bigger. They are just teaching the kids to back out of something that is to challenging for them, that will not help them in the future.

    October 19, 2010 at 11:33 am |
  780. Wyatt

The choice of playing wether or not should have been up to the players.

    October 19, 2010 at 11:33 am |
  781. Astro

The players should be able to play. That's just not good sportsmanship to refuse to play someone because they may be bigger then you. And anyway when you go out for football, or any sport, you take the risk of getting hurt. The thrill of the sport is to test your physical ability against the other teams'. The players might get hurt but it's better then chickening out because of someone's size.

    October 19, 2010 at 11:34 am |
  782. Nicole

Once my coach told me this one tip of advice I'll never forget.... "Win or lose, go out there and play your best. If you walk on that field ready to play, and if you give it your best shot, then even if you lose, you made it. There's always room for improvements, but you can't improve without trial and error." With that I strongly believed they should've gone out there and given it their best shot.

    October 19, 2010 at 11:38 am |
  783. lake

i think that they should make any decision they want as long as the team as a whole decided to forfeit. its thier decision, they knew that they would have to make a sacrificial loss.

    October 19, 2010 at 11:38 am |
  784. Abbie

I am ok with it but they should've asked if the players wanted to play or not.

    October 19, 2010 at 11:59 am |
  785. Kerigan

We all need to work together to build sportsmanship, if we dont we will never know what it is like.

    October 19, 2010 at 12:13 pm |
  786. seth

They made the wrong choice. It is telling them that its ok to back down if they think they aren't good enough, and to not even try.

    October 19, 2010 at 12:14 pm |
  787. Daviz

I think they should have played because you go out for a sport to play and have fun, not to back down. I am pretty short and i play five sports and there are always girls bigger than me but i dont back down, i play because backing down means you are scared to take chances! Playing would have should the other team they aint scared of nothin!

    October 19, 2010 at 12:16 pm |
  788. peyton

its football yes you can get hurt thats way you have pads for

    October 19, 2010 at 12:17 pm |
  789. harper

they shouldnt hvae to play but i would love to be known to try not to be a little loser not too be a quiter. if they would play they would show people they arent scaerd of anyone and anything.

    October 19, 2010 at 12:19 pm |
  790. Koolz

I think they were right to forfeit because the team was bigger than them. I really do not Know much about football and i think the team who forfeited was right to forfeit. the other team was bigger so they were right to forfeit because of the safety for them.

    October 19, 2010 at 12:20 pm |
  791. luke

if you teach kids their age to not do anything that might take a challenge then they will quit for everything. And you never know, miricals happen and that team could have won.

    October 19, 2010 at 12:21 pm |
  792. Elliott

They shouldn't of forfeit because it teaches them that if somethings to tough you just give up. With that they already know that in football you might get hurt so that doesn't give reason for them to just forfeit without trying. I know for playing football myself and you should just look them in the eye and say I'm going to win.

    October 19, 2010 at 12:21 pm |
  793. peyton

it grate that the minner out of the mine so wen will the foot ball game start

    October 19, 2010 at 12:22 pm |
  794. Devynn

I think they should have just play the game even if they were going to lose. You never know they could have won. They are teaching the kids to backdown when they are scared.......sometimes you have to take risks.

    October 19, 2010 at 12:22 pm |
  795. macie

I believe that the coches and the administration should have let them play becuse they are being unfair to the players and to the other team they could of played and they could of won, but the administration and the coaches arn't being fair and they are lowering the players and the schools self estem.

    October 19, 2010 at 12:23 pm |
  796. Madeline

Football is, and may allways be, a Safety hazord. Iet them play, they should know the risks.

    October 19, 2010 at 12:25 pm |
  797. Emmanuel

I think the quitting team should suck it up, and play. In football there are supposed to people hurting. What are teaching people about real life situations!

    October 19, 2010 at 12:27 pm |
  798. Elm

I agree that they had to quit. My momma always said "if you think your gonna get hurt don't do it". I think that they saved a bunch of band-aids not playing.

    October 19, 2010 at 1:03 pm |
  799. Tanner

I honestly think that is rude! you should be able to play anytime big or small it just depense on how good you are inside not on the outside!!

    October 19, 2010 at 1:03 pm |
  800. Winston

I play football and have gone against guys twice my size, even if I was blocking on kickoff return to block or to tackle a huge running back when I play linebacker

    October 19, 2010 at 1:11 pm |
  801. Marshal

What??? If they can't handle this how are thety supposed to take challenges in the future. Even though Football is one of the most dangerous sports come on!!!!

    October 19, 2010 at 1:11 pm |
  802. NOAH

I think they should have still tried to play. It would be fun to try to win. Why sign up if you will not play. If my team was not ready to play I would at least make them try. If you do not play the other team, they will think you are afraid. If my team thought they would get hurt then i would not play like they did.

    October 19, 2010 at 1:17 pm |
  803. Josh

    Yes they were right

    October 19, 2010 at 1:17 pm |
  804. Micah

I think they should have played the other team because i would have a great feeling if i played and didn't forfeit....even if we lost.

    October 19, 2010 at 1:19 pm |
  805. Nickers

They signed up for the sport knowing that there well be challenges like people being bigger ,faster and stronger. Whats the fun of the game if you dont try whats the funof the game plus you never know how the game well turn out you always have a chance of winning.

    October 19, 2010 at 1:25 pm |

I think that they shouldn't have forfeit the game because it make them seem like they are afraid of a challenge.

  807. Logan

I think it was a bad choice. You are just teaching kids to back down when it gets tough

    October 19, 2010 at 2:27 pm |
  808. Emma

I think it was a bad choice to forfeit the game. This choice is telling the kids that it is okay to not go out for something and try. Also it is telling the other team that just because they are big they can do anything.

    October 19, 2010 at 2:28 pm |
  809. Seth

It really depends on how big they actually were. I play football myself and there is always going to be someone the is bigger and better than you are. but if the dudes were really as big as I imagine they then the coach probably made the right choice

    October 19, 2010 at 2:28 pm |

If it was my team we would try to face them, but we would problely lose

    October 19, 2010 at 2:29 pm |

When playing sports, you`ll run into someone bigger or better then you. If you show that its ok to forfeit in sports, imagine their outlook in life out side of school!

    October 19, 2010 at 2:30 pm |
  812. Pat

I think that he did the right thing because it is better safe than sorry.

Come on this is football. Your going to face bigger people. Your just going to have to deal with it.

    October 19, 2010 at 2:31 pm |
  814. Harrison

Bad choice. Its not like your not going to face bigger people. You could at least go and show up. They might have gotten smaller. My moma always use to say" life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what your gonna get".

    October 19, 2010 at 2:32 pm |
  815. Natalie

They shouldn't of forfeit because that shows they are really weak.Obviously were to scared to even try to play! So to me it kinda looks like all of there practice was a waste of time!

    October 19, 2010 at 2:32 pm |
  816. noah

i think that they shouldn't have forfeited because as many people have said they are being taught to give up when things get tough

    October 19, 2010 at 2:43 pm |
  817. Tiffinie

This is a subject that really bothers me. St. George's was wrong in forfeiting the game. Rising to a challenge and facing adversity is something we should be taught to do. Instead, this school has just taught their players, and student body as a whole, that when a challenge seems difficult, to give up. Life is full of obstacles and a school should be teaching its students to try and overcome them.

    October 19, 2010 at 5:41 pm |
  818. Miranda

I think that the football team was right to back down. Others may believe that it is setting a bad example but they really are not. It should be thought of as a good example for backing down before people got hurt. If it was my team I would rather back down then get hurt or have my team members hurt and out for the rest of the season. You are giving up one game and if you got hurt you would be giving up many.

    October 19, 2010 at 7:48 pm |
  819. Ellen

You should see what the players think about forfeiting the game before you do.

    October 19, 2010 at 9:20 pm |
  820. Lauren

i understand why a school would do this for safety, but i think it is just wrong!!! you should let the kids play to at least get the experience! playing harder teams just makes you better!!

    October 19, 2010 at 9:50 pm |
  821. cameron

the school should play, just because the team is bigger or better, does not mean that they should not play, that means that they don't believe will win, you cant get anywhere unless you start.

    October 20, 2010 at 8:01 am |
  822. Will

I think that the coach did make the right decision. Although it was a little bit unsportsmanlike the safety of his players should have come first, and did. If the team gets crushed by a bigger team and all the players get hurt, there wont be anymore wins, or maybe games at all.

    October 20, 2010 at 8:21 am |
  823. Mike

I think they should not have forfeited. I that because they didn't even play the game. They just said the other team was to tough so they quit. If they had play like half the game or a quarter and a lot of there players were getting injured then I guess that would be alright. Because he wanted to preserve the team for some one they could beat. Also the other team was probably really good and they played dirty to so he didn't wanna risk injuring some of his players.

    October 20, 2010 at 8:24 am |
  824. Josh

I think that the decision of forfeiting a a bad idea in some ways. One reason is because that might have taught the kids that if the odds don't look good, just give up. Terrible role model. Also, even though the kids on the other team was big, they might have not even been very good. At least give the kids the chance to play their hearts out. I play football and I think that me and my team have a chance to win every game we play. We just put in our best effort and we could do anything.

    October 20, 2010 at 8:25 am |
  825. Alyssa

I think they should of at least of tried, what happens if they did win they would of been happy and surprised. It would of been shocking if they did play and beat the Lawrence academy. But if they did play and they Lawrence academy was to rough and was just hurting everyone and winning they they should of forfeited then, but not until they tried. I'm my mind this is similar to poor sports. It is football, it is a rough house sport and if you were going to play then your going to have to deal with big and to good of teams.

    October 20, 2010 at 8:25 am |
  826. Tristan

I think if you want to play football man up and play the team that's what your playing for. Your playing to be the best team you can be which means you probably will play bigger and better teams. That's like the Detroit Lions forfeiting because their playing the New England Patriots because the Pats are better. I just think that they should have played the game, THE END.

    October 20, 2010 at 8:26 am |
  827. Kalea

I don't think the St. George football team should have forfeited just because they thought that Lawrence Academy was bigger and better. Because no matter what you should never quit, no matter how big the challenge is you really should conquer it. If they are going to quit they shouldn't play. Because isn't football all about never quitting.

    October 20, 2010 at 8:28 am |
  828. kyle

i think that they should play. that teaches them nothing. what will they forfeit when ever the game is had. it is like giving up on life. when its tough , the tough get going.it is all in the game.not good sportsmanship.no cool

    October 20, 2010 at 8:28 am |
  829. Jason

I think that they were being wimps and they since they forfeited that makes them look bad and all the other teams that they play will want to beat them. Also its football it does not matter how wimpy or tough the other team is its the game if you want to play you go to play. Another thing is that it does not matter what the record is for both teams its still a game that you have to play. The last thing is it does not matter if the St. Georges team thinks that How tough Lawrence is they were being wimps and they should have tried in the name of good sportsman ship.

    October 20, 2010 at 8:28 am |
  830. Eli

I think they should of have of played them for sportsmanship because it's a 50% chance if they win or lose. It doesn't matter if the other team is bigger then you you could get hurt, but they could also hurt the other team. Forfeiting it like quitting or giving up and nobody wants that. Your not playing football to win or lose your playing to have fun, i think the St. George, coach should of said that to the players, making them have a little buit of courage. Both teams are 2-0 so there both teams have to be good. Seriously, its football your going to get hurt no matter what.

    October 20, 2010 at 8:28 am |
  831. Cody

I think that the team should have just been men because if they ever wanna be a football player for like the Patriots then they can't just be all like well this team looks big an tough lets quit. The other team might just look tough but not be very good. I think they should have played the game an had fun doing it. If i was on the football team for St. George i would be pretty mad. It just makes St. George look like a weak team.

    October 20, 2010 at 8:29 am |
  832. Kyle

They shouldn't have forfeited, Because that means that they are afraid of losing to a team that is bigger than them. They should have been good sportsmen and took the challenge. If they had a good attitude they would have won. It's not the size of the dog in the fight its the size of the fight in the dog.

    October 20, 2010 at 8:29 am |
  833. Dustin

I think that it was stupid to forfeit the game because they should have taken the game in sportsmanship. I also don't think that it is fare to the players because what if they wanted to play. Sounds to me like that coach is a wimp. Like our coach says what do you think you have pads for.

    October 20, 2010 at 8:30 am |
  834. Calla

I think that the coach should nave just let them play! Thats the point of the game there are losers and winners. If they want to be football players they will have to be tough and go through obstacles. And they didn't even try that sounds to me like bad sportsmanship.

    October 20, 2010 at 8:30 am |
  835. Will

I think half the people above me saying that the forfeiting team are babys and that they shouldnt have chickened out, probably dont play a contact sport. of course your gonna get bumped around, but no one likes to get hurt. Walk a mile in their shoes before you go shooting them down.

    October 20, 2010 at 8:31 am |
  836. Chloe

I think that the football team shouldn't have forfeited. The challenge might have been hard, but they still could have tried their hardest. I think that the coach should have let the team play and to know that they have at least tried. If they had won they would be so proud of themselves. I know the coach had safety in mind but they're football players.

    October 20, 2010 at 8:33 am |
  837. Devon

I think that they should have all the right to forfeit for safety. Because someone could possibly get seriously injured if their going against another foot ball team with really tough foot ball players. They also could of took the challenge of the game and chanced it to either win or loose. They should have the right to play or forfeit if they aren't as good. Now if you want to be a good foot ball team. If they were a team that is not afraid to loose. I think that not playing the game would make people not like that team or they might think that the team are good at playing. Since they didn't play the match, I think that they don't have good sport's man ship in foot ball. What dose it matter if the other team is bigger then their team. But also it's good that the coach didn't want his player's to get hurt.

    October 20, 2010 at 8:34 am |
  838. Kelsey

I don't think they should have forfeited. Just because the administration didn't think it was a good idea, didn't mean that they kids didn't want to play. The administration just ruined an undefeated season for those kids just because the other players were too tough. The other team was undefeated too, so they must be somewhere in the same league to both be that good. In my opinion, I would have at least started the game and then if it looked too be way to hard and people were going to get hurt, then I'd look into fore-fitting.

    October 20, 2010 at 9:21 am |
  839. Alice

I don't think that they should have forfeited because if they would have gone up against them they would have been more proud of themselves and had more confidence if they would have beat them. They didn't know if they would have won or not. They could have taken the challenge and won and then other teams would be afraid of them. Life's about taken chances and here the clearly did not.

    October 20, 2010 at 9:22 am |
  840. Dustin

i dont think that they should cancel/forfeit just because of the size of the challenging teams players. i dont think that its unsafe to play a team that has biggerplayers because ou signed up for the specific sport, no if you sign up to play i think you should play against anyone big or small. the only reason i think a game should be cancelled is the weather and that makes it unsafe not bigger, better players. i think that cancelling a game with that kind of an excuse is just as bad sportsmanship as hitting someone after the whistle!!!

    October 20, 2010 at 9:23 am |
  841. Taylor

They should not have forfeited because I shows that the ministration does not believe that they could do it. They may have been bigger player but what are they going to do when they face a team that's bigger than them. Are they just going to forfeit every game? Also when you play sports you go get a team that's bigger and better that you but its a better challenge for that team. I think they should made them at least try. Make it like a challenge for the football team. You should never give up.

    October 20, 2010 at 9:24 am |
  842. ryan

I think that they shouldn't have forfeit their game because you will sometime face teams that are better than you and bigger than you but that doesn't mean that you should just give up. If somebody gets injured then decide what to do from there but at least play the game and don't give up.

    October 20, 2010 at 9:24 am |
  843. Anthony

I think that they shouldn't have even been allowed to forfeit. The players on the St. George team signed into football knowing that there was gonna be some tough competition. Just because a team is too fast or too strong, doesn't mean that they should just give up. Whats the point of signing up if you can't take a challenge?

    October 20, 2010 at 9:25 am |
  844. Gabrielle

I don't think that they should have forfeit the game. Because that tells you, that they are weak and don't want a challenge. So I think that they should have taken the challenge in the name of sportsmanship. Because if they had taken the challenge against a team that is supposedly really good and has strong players. That could show that they are strong and not weak. I also think that if they had played and tried they could have possibly won the game. And that would show that they have good sportsmanship. That's why I think that they shouldn't have forfeit the game.

    October 20, 2010 at 9:28 am |
  845. Kieran

Safety is an important thing obviously, but can you go too far? Well, you can go to far, and that's what this team did. They took one look at the other team and said "No way! Go right on by, we're out of here!" Just because someone or something is bigger and better than you are, doesn't mean you should give up! Hey come on, this is football, you're supposed to get pounded! Your body needs challenges, and if all you do is let the better teams breeze right by, then playing is pointless. If you can't take a challenge, then don't bother playing. Safety is important, but that's why we play with protection. Take a challenge next time!

    October 20, 2010 at 9:29 am |
  846. William

I think they should of taken the challenge for sportsmanship because even if they are bigger and better that doesn't mean you shouldn't play because you could actually win or have a blast trying. Football is a rough sport but that is why there is padding to make sure you are safe. So like i said before they should of played even though they were bigger and better.

    October 20, 2010 at 10:11 am |
  847. Eric

I think they should of taken the challenge and not forfeit. Forfeiting is a serious sign of weakness. They should have played the game and if it turned out that the players couldn't take the hits then they should of called off the game. If the football players can't take a loss and are afraid to get hurt then maybe these people shouldn't be football players.

    October 20, 2010 at 10:12 am |
  848. Amber

I think that they should have played the game. I know it might have been dangerous but that doesn't mean they should wimp out. I mean not they always teach you to challenge yourself. Well not doing this game was not challenging yourself. They may have even won. So I don't think they should have forfeited the game. They should have taken the challenge head on.

    October 20, 2010 at 10:13 am |
  849. Dakota

I think they shouldn't have forfeited because they are to good and to big. I think they should have taken the challenge and played against Lawrence. If they didn't want to get hurt then they wouldn't have signed up to play football. In football a lot of people get hurt anyways so it should matter how good the other team is, you should try your best anyways.

    October 20, 2010 at 10:15 am |
  850. Daeghan

I think they should have continued playing. If the team kept playing then they would have gotten better and done better in the next game. The only reason they should forfeit is if the weather is bad, or the field isn't safe. They should have toughened up and took on the challenge because they could have won. Plus they said the opposing team was to big. What does that mean? To many players, to fat, to tall, or to tough?

    October 20, 2010 at 10:16 am |
  851. Jordan

They shouldn't have forfeited, because they're pretty much gave up on a game that is supposed to be rough. If you're signing up for a game that is supposed to be rough, don't forfeit because you can't take it. You could at least go and show up. By forfeiting all their practice was wasted.

    October 20, 2010 at 10:17 am |
  852. JUSTIN

Well why would a football team forfeit. I think that football players know their going to get hit and stop being wimps and toughen up. Why would the school not play. The school makes and pays for a football team that should play football. I mean the other team was planing and getting ready to play a game then the high school football team forfeit. Who cares about maybe one or two people getting hurt because I bet maybe 1 good player from both teams could be a pro.

    October 20, 2010 at 10:17 am |
  853. Savannah!

I think that they should have taken the challenge. They should just take the challenge because you should always try your best, and who knows they could have actually won the game. Its football, some people/teams are going to be bigger and better, but since they signed up so they should play and suck it up! So yes I think they should have played the game NOT forfeited.!

    October 20, 2010 at 10:17 am |
  854. Hope

I think instead of the team wimping out, they should have expected that football is a rough sport but that's why you play. I don't understand why they forfeited. Any American person would know that football is really rough. For example ,My brother played football in high school he once got tackled after the whistle and suffered an stage 3 concussion. Football can be play full, pain full, but dangerous. It depends how you play the right or cheat.

    October 20, 2010 at 10:18 am |
  855. Che

I don't see why the administrator canceled their game. The administrators should have at least asked the players or even just the coaches and team captains. Their team went 2-0 so that at least proves that they can play football and win, I think the school board just showed that they have no confidence in their school's athletic ability. Football is a game of contact and you will sometimes play people who are bigger than you are, but that doesn't necessarily mean they are better than you. Skill is only a small part of football, your determination and heart matters more than your overall skill.

    October 20, 2010 at 10:18 am |
  856. Damen

I think they should have played in the game even if they have bigger player's the should play just for the sport of the game. I think they should have tried because they could have won. I think the player's should have a choice in saying if they want to forfeit or not. Who care's if they win or lose it's just for fun.

    October 20, 2010 at 10:19 am |
  857. Chelsea

I don't think that St. George's Academy should have forfeited because I think that the right thing to do is to take on the challenge. Why did they go to the game if they knew that if the players were too tough and scary they would throw in the towel? If they would've proceeded with the game, and players were getting hurt, then the right thing to do would be to forfeit. Since St. George's didn't test the waters first, and try to play the game, it looks like they were just scared.

    October 20, 2010 at 10:19 am |
  858. Sierra

I think that they shouldn't have forfeited. The team they were playing against might have been really good, but the St. George's team might have beat the other team. Everybody gets hurt sometimes and they should be carful in any sport.

    October 20, 2010 at 10:19 am |
  859. Allie

I think that the football team shouldn't have forfeited the football game. The players of Lawrence Academy might have been bigger and better, but it would have been good for St. George to have a challenge. They even could have won if they thought they could and tried their hardest. St. George could have won because they might have had better team work than Lawrence Academy, and to win a game you need to have good team work. St. George School should have taken the challenge and tried to win.

    October 20, 2010 at 10:21 am |
  860. David

I think what they did was a stupid move. The coach should of just sucked it up and played the game. It might of bean a challenge. Aren't you supposed to play as hard as you can in a game. Doesn't matter how tough the other team is. Just maybe they might not have good hitters. Even if they don't you should step up to them.

    October 20, 2010 at 10:22 am |
  861. Jordan

I think that them forfeit is ridiculous. Football is a physical sport and to back away its unsportsmanlike, why would you forfeit. So what you get hit hard, or anything else. I play football and yes it does sometimes hurt when you get hit, but after that your ok and you show your "battle scars". And about the big part, our line men are big, yes, but they don't block or anything, but if you put fast, agility people at the line, and it doesn't matter what size you are.

    October 20, 2010 at 10:23 am |
  862. Britney

I think that St. George shouldn't have forfeit because they should expect when they football that there are going to be kids bigger then each other and that they may get hurt. Football is a rough sport and the couches are babying them too much if the forfeit because a players bigger then another. So yes they should have challenged in the name of sportsmanship because who knows, they could have beat them.

    October 20, 2010 at 11:12 am |
  863. Ciara

Everybody faces challenges in life. Just because there bigger and may play better doesn't mean you should forfeit. They should have played to get better at their game. Also everybody gets hurt at some point. Take the risk, maybe the other team would under estimate their team giving them the chance to shock the players and maybe have a better chance then they thought.

    October 20, 2010 at 11:13 am |
  864. Zachary

I think they should have at least tried the game I don't believe that they are too big or good, they have pads that's the safety. I just think they where focusing on their winning streak I'm sure the kids wanted to play the game. And now that they have quit the kids are going to not be used to taking challenges. Being a football player my self I have to go against bigger kids or smaller kids.

    October 20, 2010 at 11:18 am |
  865. Tabatha

I think they should have played. So What if Lawrence was big. The players and coach were willing to play/teach football and in football you get hurt and everybody who plays or teaches should know that. Yeah, there safety is important but you committed to do something and being afraid to get hurt for a pretty violent sport is kinda selfish. I am pretty sure Lawrence was looking forward to the game and it is nice to win but from a forfeit shows that the team you were going to play sissy-ed out and yeah good to know that your team is big and bad but they signed up to PLAY not win from forfeit. Think about how the other team felt and unless you didn't have enough players to play there is no reason to Forfeit. At least try and if things don't work during the game then maybe you can forfeit.

    October 20, 2010 at 11:20 am |
  866. Tristian.

Whether or not they got their butts kicked it shouldn't have mattered, it should always be for the love of the game. It's time people realize that it's not all about winning all the time. You should play for your team, not for your victory. Especially our school, is very competitive and we are rivals with a Lawrence team. We're always ready for a fight, whether we win or lose it's always important to try your hardest. Them being bigger then you is one thing but to forfeit over it? My goodness. Your playing football for gosh sakes! If their intentionally harming your team it's not right, but then again your playing football.. Hello. You have under armor for a reason. Yes, I realize it doesn't always protect you. But it should for the most part.!

    October 20, 2010 at 11:23 am |
  867. MATTT

I feel that they should have forfieted because sometimes it is better to be quiet and be thought of as a fool, then open your mouth and prove it. I think it was better to just forfiet then to risk season ending injuries.

    October 20, 2010 at 11:25 am |
  868. Jeff

It is expected that you would face a problem like that. As long as they stay away from the head area they should be okay. They don't learn anything if they forfeit. At least they'd learn something from the game. They might even win.

    October 20, 2010 at 11:34 am |
  869. felipe

i think it that it was a bad dicision to back out of the game.it was bad because if you decide to play the game you gotta play. it was just a bad move.

    October 20, 2010 at 2:54 pm |
  870. lolo

That was a stupid idea to forfitt. It tells them to quit instead of working hard.

    October 20, 2010 at 2:55 pm |
  871. Gabbyy

I agree with both of them. They should stay in the game for good sportsman ship because some people will think they are just being wimps. They should have forfeited because safety is a big thing especially in football, like concussions braking of bones, or cuts and bruises. Even though they are tought that way they should not be treated that way.

    October 20, 2010 at 2:56 pm |
  872. bobert

I think they could have done it. That was just like the movie facing the giants. The team could have been bigger but you dont know if they have the right ways to beat you

    October 20, 2010 at 2:56 pm |
  873. charlit

i think they should have better protection because alot of kids are getting concussions.

    October 20, 2010 at 2:57 pm |
  874. Sarah

I don't think they should've forfeited. It shows that they quit too easily, and that they can't take a challenge. They should've just played even if they knew they would lose. That way they could say they tried.

    October 20, 2010 at 2:58 pm |
  875. Rlyn

I think that its dumb to give up because sports is just life and if you you chose to back down it just like telling people that you just wanna gave up .....
and I think that sports teach you not only the concepts of that certaing sport but it also teaching you about DETERMINATION

    October 20, 2010 at 2:59 pm |

I think it was a good idea. I mean if someone alot bigger then you landed on you could get some serueis injuries. Then the parnts will have to pay for that bill wich most parnets can't afford.

I think it's a bad idea to have a team who back out of a game, there will always be a bigger, and stronger team out there . Most of the players look up to their coches. Some of them may now think it's ok to back of challenging things in life.

i Beleve that the school made the wrong choice because that made the other team look like wimps.

    October 20, 2010 at 3:00 pm |
  879. Dani

I think it depends on the kids. If they want to play, let them play. If they want to be safe and not play, don't let then play.

    October 20, 2010 at 3:01 pm |
  880. Elizabethh

I think that they should play someone there own size & age! If they played half of them would probably of been injured.

    October 20, 2010 at 3:01 pm |
  881. Bryce

Everyone in football gets hurt, it’s only a matter of time before some one does and there will always be a bigger team then yours. Just because you are faced up against a good team doesn't mean you should quit because you never know if you will come out on top.

    October 20, 2010 at 3:02 pm |
  882. Timber

I can not decide it’s not good to show them that just because you aren’t a strong team doesn’t mean you should just give up. Then again you do not want to set them up for failure. I don’t know if his choice was right but then again I don’t think it was wrong

    October 20, 2010 at 3:03 pm |
  883. kyle

thay souldent have forfited its not alyways a fact that thay would have lost.you shuld play for fun not to win.

    October 20, 2010 at 3:04 pm |
  884. Hannah

I think that it is good and bad. I think its good they didn't play because the other guys were HUGE. But they showed a lack of sportsmenship and apperciation for the sport. They should have known that their where going to be bigger and better teams but that shouldn't force them to quite.

    October 20, 2010 at 3:06 pm |
  885. Ricardo

They shouldn't forfeit because it's always gonna be like this in football, it's not gonna go away

    October 20, 2010 at 3:08 pm |
  886. Marisa

I dont think that is right. No team needs to feel like they are no good.

    October 20, 2010 at 3:09 pm |
  887. Zuriah

I think that it isn't very sportsmanship like to forfeit the game without even trying. They should have at least tried, and if they were too hard then i can understand them forfeiting...So many people were probably waiting for the game to start and then got very disappointed.

    October 20, 2010 at 3:09 pm |
  888. Lexi

I think playerss should play their own size and age. It could make them get seriously hurt.If we do this we could help the human race's health.

    October 20, 2010 at 3:11 pm |
  889. Alannah

I don't think that this is fair because the team that backed out probably feels bad about themselves. But I also think that it was a good idea to put safety first.

    October 20, 2010 at 3:11 pm |
  890. christian

I think that it was good that they didn't play because they would had lost bad and it's embarrassing!

    October 20, 2010 at 3:12 pm |
  891. Bradley

I think it's bad how they teach the kids to give up when it's a challenge."When the going gets tough, the tough gets going."

    October 20, 2010 at 3:30 pm |
  892. Jennifer

I think that they should have taken the challenge not only for sportsmanship but also for the students’ confidence. Backing out would only make them look weak and careless about the sport.

    October 20, 2010 at 3:49 pm |
  893. Myu

They should not have forfeited because if they joined the football team, they should have known what they were getting into when they signed the liability forms. If they were afraid to play a game just because the odds weren’t in their favor, they shouldn't have signed up for football.

    October 20, 2010 at 3:50 pm |
  894. joseph

i think you play football for one reason, and that is to live up to the challeges and adversity that come in your way. So to me, forfeiting is giving up and teaching your players that its ok to walk away without even trying.

    October 20, 2010 at 3:50 pm |
  895. Yamisake

I think that if there was a true chance of major injury, or sad failure...... play anyway! u never know if u dont try, when it comes to strength, its not the muscle size, its the muscle mass

    October 20, 2010 at 3:50 pm |
  896. mack

thats ubsered why would someone give up yea saftey is an issue it should not be something that prohibits players from having fun. my dad is the team trainer for my pee wee team and we dont give up because the other team is bigger.

    October 20, 2010 at 3:55 pm |
  897. Ashley :)

I don’t think they should forfeit the game because they might have a greater chance of winning but you should never give up. And besides it’s just a game, you’re supposed to have fun. I mean it’s not like they’re going to kill you…

    October 20, 2010 at 3:58 pm |
  898. Neema

I think sportsmanship is important but at the some time its not. Its in important because its good to be kind to people, but at the same time sports isn't all about being nice.

    October 20, 2010 at 4:00 pm |
  899. Tess

Safety is important...that I understand. Although, when you forfeit you send out either the "I'm frightened" or "I know I'd lose" message. Those aren't exactly noble. Worst case scenario... go for it.

    October 20, 2010 at 4:01 pm |
  900. Kazabo

I think that it is important to be safe than to a sport person, because if the sport that you play is not safe then you will not enjoy your game because you don't know how to be safe while playing. You need to know how to be safe first before you play the game you want to play.

    October 20, 2010 at 4:06 pm |
  901. Alyssa

no i think that they were wrong to forfit, i mean, your baisicly saying,
" when life has its hard times run away, "FYI!!!!! deal with it.

    October 20, 2010 at 4:53 pm |
  902. Brianna

I think that they shouldn't have backed out. They are basically saying that it's ok not to deal with the hard times that come along. You chose to play the sport they should know the risks involved. Since they made this move it will send the wrong message that they are not showing sportsmanship. Why not take the chance? What if they had won?

    October 20, 2010 at 6:39 pm |
  903. Dlaine

I think that they should have played it because when they signed up for football they should have known that there are going to be tough games but its better to say "I played, but we lost," rather than saying "Oh we forfeited."

    October 20, 2010 at 7:59 pm |
  904. julia

weren't we taught to never give up and to never back down but yet there is just a wimpy team who is to weak to get in the game and have a chance to win

    October 21, 2010 at 10:17 am |
  905. Chad

The sport of football is about being hit by another player, there is no way you can escape that part of football.

    October 21, 2010 at 11:18 am |
  906. jaydin

they shouldnt have forfit the should
of try to beat them and played because football is football

    October 21, 2010 at 11:20 am |
  907. Fabio

In my opinion, this was a very poor decision by St, George. In football, you never back down no matter how good or how big the team is. And even if they were bigger, it doesn't mean they hit harder. You could weigh 155 pounds, and still be the hardest hitter on the varsity football team.

    October 21, 2010 at 11:22 am |
  908. brad

I believe that they should have played because it is just embarrassing if you don’t. And it teaches the kids that it’s ok to quit when there is a challenge in front of you. I think they should have taken the challenge and tried there hardest.

    October 21, 2010 at 11:22 am |
  909. Liam

St. . George shouldn't have torfeited there game cause you never know if you can beat them if you don't try. I mean everybody loves to win but most of the time it's just a learning experience.

    October 21, 2010 at 11:25 am |
  910. Oibaf

St. George shouldn't have forfeited because you play to win and you always have to try. Now the students have learned from that experience because they know now not to quit. That was also unsportsmanlike like because you never quit because u have to be committed.

    October 21, 2010 at 11:26 am |
  911. Kaleb

I think that they should of just played the game. It's just football and the worst thing that could happen is being in the hospital for a few days. If I were there coach i would say suck it up and stop being a baby about it.

    October 21, 2010 at 11:27 am |
  912. ASHTON

I think it was rediulous to just quite and forfite the game like that, I know there a re saftey issuses to be conserd about but you still should never quite no matter how big or small the competishion is, you grow from your looses. Playing a great team like that can make you great. NEVER GIVE UP, NO MATTER WHAT.

    October 21, 2010 at 11:33 am |

Farah: i agree with ASHTON because they should never give up

I kind of feel bad for the miners. Emily and Jada are right. I also think that it shouldn't be a job int the first place.

  915. jordy

I think he made the right desicion by thinking of the students and they're safety, people can be seriously injured during football.

    October 22, 2010 at 10:28 am |
  916. samyra

I think that they should have played the game. No one should play football if they don’t expect to get hurt.

    October 22, 2010 at 10:30 am |
  917. leybis

Football is football, but i think the teacher made the right choose to not let them play, if the kids would come hurt home the only thing they would do is get them out of football, i think they shouldn't let kids that strong to play in football with kids week.

    October 22, 2010 at 10:34 am |
  918. Tiana

I think they had a right to forfeit the game if they wanted to. But it also depends on on how rough the other team really is, if they are just a really good team and are just playing the game, just might be a bit tougher then them then that's no reason to forfeit because there's always gonna be teams that are a lot better then you. If the team was just really rough cause they liked to hurt players on the other team then it was probably a good idea to quit because someone could get seriously hurt and could effect the rest of their life!

    October 22, 2010 at 12:02 pm |
  919. Michael

I dont think it was the right thing to do. The first thing you teach a kid to do is not when something is to hard just quit. So what if the other team was bigger. Bigger is not always better.

    October 22, 2010 at 4:18 pm |
  920. Alyssa

I think they should have tried to play but if some one got hurt the could then call off the game.

    October 23, 2010 at 10:47 am |
  921. Lauren

If their coach decided to make them quit thats his decision. The coach did what he thought was best for the players. If the kids would have gotten hurt they may have not got to play the rest of the season.

    October 24, 2010 at 6:12 pm |
  922. Maddy

I think that they should have just played! Unless there was serious weather then you coul quit I guess. But it's a little dumb that they just forfited and didn't tell us the weather conditions!!!

    October 25, 2010 at 9:31 am |
  923. madelynn

i think he made the right decision. I asked my dad for his opinion and he said that he made the right decision.my brother is on cruches because of a game like that. SAFTY FIRST!!!!!

    October 25, 2010 at 12:06 pm |
  924. tasha

my personal opinion on that story is that they should have canceled it and they made the right decision in doing so. they need to look at the safety and they didnt want anyone to get hurt.

    October 25, 2010 at 1:17 pm |
  925. Sydney

Although I admire the coach's concern for his players, I don't think it was really fair for him to forfeight the game. I think he should've started the game, and if his team fought through the beginning, then to just keep going and believe in his players.

    October 25, 2010 at 1:30 pm |
  926. Anna

I dont think the team should have forfited the game. They should have tryed there best and they could have won. They should have at least tryed.

    October 25, 2010 at 1:33 pm |
  927. erin

I think that the team shouldn't have forefited. You should at least try. Even if you loose it is better to say you lost than you forefited.

    October 25, 2010 at 1:34 pm |
  928. Brady

I dont see how 1 hit can get you fined alot of money. I play football for my school and i recently got a contusion in my knee playing in our schools game. Football is and emotional and physical sport. You are gonna get banged up and bruised but thats why you should love it. if you cant take the risk of getting hurt then dont play. My heart goes out to those who do get hurt because i know what it feels like but thats not gonna stop me from playing the sport that i love.

    October 25, 2010 at 2:39 pm |
  929. brandon

i belive that it was a good idea because what if they took the risk of getting one of there players hurt

    October 25, 2010 at 2:51 pm |
  930. Lexi

I think they should have played it out of sportsmanship. My brothers are tiny but really tall and they go up againist some pretty big and strong guys but his team didnt quit.

    October 26, 2010 at 10:53 am |
  931. Colton

I think it was good that they forfeit because there some injuries that don't heal.

    October 26, 2010 at 10:59 am |
  932. Connor

I think they should have gone along and played. They could learn some things together as a team. I think it is wrong to forfeit for safty. No matter what football game you play in someone will always get hurt!

    October 26, 2010 at 1:27 pm |
  933. Katie

I believe they should have played, but under careful observation, to make sure there aren't any injured players. I understand what St. Georges was getting at, we don't want anyone to get hurt. I don't think they forfeited because they were afraid of losing.

    October 26, 2010 at 6:50 pm |
  934. Madison

I agree tha t other people's saftey is important, but it's not fair that they had to forfiet the game just besause of that. Its not like nobody gets hurt, EVERYONE gets hurt in football.

    October 26, 2010 at 9:35 pm |
  935. Daniel

If your going to play football you better expect to get hurt.I mean i got hurt lost year throwing a ball around at school so if your going to forfeit over safety reasons you might want to toughen up your team

    October 26, 2010 at 9:38 pm |
  936. Greg

To me, football is about the thrill of hitting someone bigger than you and getting away with it. The administrators of St. George's are depriving that feeling from their players, and humiliating them to other schools.

    October 27, 2010 at 6:56 am |
  937. Geraldo

Truthfully I think they should've gone and played. Football is all about big hits and getting hurt, it is part of the game and always has been. And how many kids do you really think were going to get hurt?

    October 27, 2010 at 10:23 am |
  938. Adan

Look, if these guys quit now that they faced a problem that bigger than them, how will they face problems later on in life? They should face them head on, like the 300 spartans against the massive armies of Xerxes.

    October 27, 2010 at 10:37 am |
  939. Andrew

i think they should have gone to play and don't get scared of the team u are facing. i am both sides of this decision and they should have a fair game with the other team.

    October 27, 2010 at 10:40 am |
  940. Jamal

I am on both sides on this opinion. These kids should have played the game, who knows, they could have won the game. They should have forfeited because those kids looked like they lived off of steroids.

    October 27, 2010 at 10:41 am |
  941. remington

I think that it isn't right to deny the players who love the game the right to play just because they are littler than the other team. I mean look at the NFL the smallest guys take on the biggest ones without stopping or stalling.

    October 27, 2010 at 1:21 pm |
  942. Ethan

I think the team should have played because football is a game where you are not supposed to be scared of anyone on the field no matter how big the other team is, plus it is a contaact sport so most of the time somone is going to get a little hurt.

    October 27, 2010 at 1:26 pm |
  943. Devon

I think that St. George had their reasons to cancel the game. The couch was just thinking about his players when he did. But if the kids on the team wanted to play in the game then the coach should have let them play. Maybe what the coach could have done instead of forfeiting the game he could have had a team meeting a day before the game and see what the kids wanted to do.

    October 27, 2010 at 3:46 pm |
