Your Thoughts on the Recession

In your opinion, is the recession over?
Over the past couple years, many of you have written to us about how the recession has affected your families, communities and schools.  On Monday, the National Bureau of Economic Research reported that the recession is over - that it officially ended in June of 2009.

What are your thoughts:  Do you agree or disagree?

No it’s not over it will go on for a long time we all should know that we have hoped and prayed that are families, communities, and schools would get better but they have not gone far. The school I go to is the same as it has been for a long time. There are little things here and there but that is it. I feel that the state needs to come in and help before it is too late. And like my family most families do not have much money because of the economy but hopefully that will change soon.

    Yours truly Courtney

No, I don't believe the recession is over. There are still many people in my communtity getting laid off, and everywhere the economy is still not meeting or exceeding the expectations, but the recession is slowly improving...

I would have to say that no, the recession was not over not in June in 2009. My friends dad lost her job only a cople of months ago and the economy is still really bad.A lot of people still don't have jobs and everyone is still in fear of getting laid off.The recession is still here.

I dont think it is over because if it was then why are some people still suffering, and also lots of people are still needing help to pay for their family and food

Are you kidding? Just the other day i was reading a newspaper article about how 1 in 7 Americans are currently living in poverty. If we are considered out of a recession, then what do you call a depression?

I disagree. as long as there's people that are jobless and homeless its still on. But i will say that no matter what there will still be homeless people and people looking for jobs. Right now I'd say that were in the middle of turning the leaf over.

I don't think the recession is over. People are still losing their jobs. Businesses are going down. I still see signs around town saying "Going Out of Business" I don't think it is over.

In my opinion, the recessions is not over yet. Gas prices are rocketing, many things are still over priced, and the US is going to need a LOT of money to recover from Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico, so as long as we can't grow money trees, the recession will not be over.

The worst may be over, but how many Americans are still unemployed? Homeless? Hungry? How many budget cuts have been made since June 2009? We still have a long way to go if we want to get back to what we were before the recession.

Well my family is just as bad off as the rest of the country, but i don't think that this "recession" has helped them very much. In fact, it has hurt them more financally. I don't think that this recession is over

    September 20, 2010 at 7:56 pm |
  14. Jason

I do not believe that the recession is over because the poverty rate is still up. I think that until we can get that rate down, the economy still has room to improve.

Though the recession is not as bad as it used to be, the US still owes alot of money. In my opinion the recession is not over yet but, it's getting better.

Altough the reccesion is declared officially over, it's still as hard as ever to find a job. It was the 2010 when most schools' budget cuts really hit hard.

I really don't know if I agree or not. My family seems to be doing better with jobs and and money and all that stuff, but my school seems like it is still struggling with the economic issues. My school seems to always have to save money, and asking for donations, and just..ugh. On the bus, it is SO crowded. I am not sure if it is the school issue, or the county issue, but still.

I think the NBER is trying to confuse us and make us give more money later on by saying that there will be another Recession and they will just take our money and put them in their wallets and give the rest to the banks.

How can you be sure if the recession is over.... In a matter on minutes someones job can be gone than on to the transportation and than possibly there home, and that one person can affect many people. So imagine that one person and than multiply it by all the other less jobless people.

    September 20, 2010 at 10:06 pm |
  21. Regan

It's crazy! Anyone can go out and try to find a job or at least go to collage and make money. This recession is making lives so difficult when all they are doing are complaining when they could be out looking for a good job.

if thay say it's over, than it's over .But personally I think if it was over eveyone would have a job,and houses on the market would be "booming up." And the most important thing you would see ,is life for americans will be EEEEASY!!!!!

    September 20, 2010 at 11:28 pm |
  26. Sam

I strongly disagree. The house sales are down and many people are without jobs ect. Humm still sounds like a recession to me!

The current administration understands people want to be told what they want to hear. This worked for a while, but now all those drinking the koolaide just flat don't believe or trust the administration anymore. Thank GOD they have come out of their comma. Look at the facts, not what you want to hear, not what you want to believe is your truth. Wake up, look around you. Nothing good in life will happen for any of us unless we are willing to take back control of our lives, make choices and take control of our futures. It's easy to let someone else be in charge, but to take charge will allow you to have control of your destiny, your future, your dreams. Stop taking their hand outs, their bread crumbs, stop acting like sheep. Take back your lives your future and make your dreams come true. It may take some hard work, but don't be afraid you can achieve anything you set your mind to.

I don't think the cession is over yet because so many young people are out of work and even harder for graduates to enter the job market. The recession would be over of more companies are hiring more students

    September 21, 2010 at 6:51 am |
  30. Thomas

I agree, The recession is over, more people are working and staying in their jobs longer and and prices for the things we buy have been cheper than ever. More people are sepnding more due to higer incomes.

  31. Jamie

The recession isn't over yet becasue so many students are out of work and even harder for graduates to enter the job market. The rescession would be over once the job market recovers and Unemployment drops

I don't think that the recession is over because people are still out of jobs and are still having trouble financially. I know this for a fact because my aunt is now working three jobs to pay the bills and mortgage and her husband only makes $5.50 and hour and works 5 days a week for 6 hours a day. And he used to make like $12.50 an hour

It is not true that the recession is over. I think it will happen again in about 1-2 years later.

I don't believe at all the recession is over for my family is still struggling. My mother filed for bank rupsey last year and i know that we still have a long hard road ahead since she is in collage. The grant money for her keeps getting smaller. As does our food stamps money which we need to for four people badly. Luckly it will hopefully get better when my sister and i Graduate from high school this year.

The econmists have to be wrong for how can they explain while unempolyment is high and houses and business are still being forclosed at a high rate? Seriously i know that they use data and try tp predick stuff but some times thing don't go the way you think they will.

I don't believe that the recession is over. Still many people in this country are lacking jobs its affected the public school around the area many schools have to close down because there is no funding for the school. Therefore students have to join other schools causing high transportation costs and teacher lye offs.

The recession can't be over if we are still in economic trouble. Once we're out of that, we're out of the recession.

I don't think the recession is officaily over. How could it be with the way people spend their money? Or rather the way they don't spend their money.

I'm not sure if the recession is over because I live and North Dakota and we never really got hit by it.

In some areas it may be over, but in others it is not. I personally have friends whose parents have just been laid off in the last week. In other areas around me though there is no one that has been laid off in big numbers. There are actually more jobs being created. Overall I believe that it is over.

Personally my family did not get affected by the recession, with that said, many many families were affected. I don't think that it is over. We still have a lot of problems left in America.

Personally i don't see how the recession is effecting were I live. I havn't noticed any effects from it, and the state still has money available tot hem. But i dont know how it effects the other states, considering i havn't been out of the state since the recession. So in my opinion I don't really know if the recession is over.

I'd disagree because of the way that people are still spending their money, and that people are still spending a little too much.

Im not quite sure if its over though, because alot of people are still without jobs. The recession could be over anytime. A lot of people were affected by this like: loss of jobs, money, and homes. Im glad that more people are gaining back.

    September 21, 2010 at 9:19 am |
  63. Nick

I don't think the recession is over yet because, unemployment rates are lower and housing prices are higher than when the recession was over in 2009.

    September 21, 2010 at 9:21 am |
  64. Mary

For me it seems like the recession is over. Many poeple and jobs have bounced back and have been doing very well. Yes, there are many jobs still out there and many homes are for sale, but with time those things can be fixed and arranged.

    September 21, 2010 at 9:21 am |

    September 21, 2010 at 9:44 am |

I disagree because the meaning that the recession is over means that every problem from the recession has gone away, but I don't think they're all gone away; especially the home sales.

I think the great recessionisn't over. There are people suffering by losing their homes and jobs.So there are still problems with the economy. People need to save up their money so they can survive. What's the buro talking about? They are making a bad choice to say that it is over when it's not.

    September 21, 2010 at 11:04 am |
  85. London

No I don't think the recession is over because some people don't have jobs yet. Also, if the recession doens'nt end some people would'nt be able to eat unless they have a job. So I think the recession has not ended.

    September 21, 2010 at 11:05 am |
  86. Cierra

I do not think the recession is over .The reason I think it is not over is because where my granny workes her job just shut down. The last reason I think the recession is not over is because there are alot of people that lost their jobs.

    September 21, 2010 at 11:11 am |
  87. IMAN

I think the recession is NOT over. How could it be over if people are still talking about it? People should'nt be spending more money anyway.

I disagree, because so many people lost thier businesses and lost thier jobs, the money they saved is all gone. Its not right that those people do not get pay raises, but I do think they do need to stop paying for unneeded things.

    September 21, 2010 at 11:17 am |
  91. Dasia

I agree and disagree because some people are still hurting and people are still losing thier jobs, but Iagree because people are spending a little more money and getting back on their feet. Lots of people are not in a full recovery, but people many are. I don't think the recession should be declared over until everyone is in recovery.

    September 21, 2010 at 11:18 am |
  92. Khymorah

I dont agree that the Great Recession is over. Some people are still laid off from their job's since 2007.I also disagree because most people who were laid off and fired from their job have children. They can't afford a lot of food for their children.People are still in the streets begging for money, food, and shelter.

    September 21, 2010 at 11:24 am |
  93. Daeshonna

I don't agree, because so many people lost their businesses and lost their jobs. People had lot of money and now it's all gone. Some people need money ,but now they don't have it so they can't keep their
    house up.

    September 21, 2010 at 11:25 am |
  94. Kenni

-No,No,No, I don't think that the recession is over. People are still out of jobs and homes are still being forclosed. This is not fair to people who are actually trying to find jobs but can't. Saying that the recession is over is not accurate info to me, but that's what the economic studies say. I would like to see the data behind the facts.

    September 21, 2010 at 11:26 am |
  95. Robert

I think that the recession is still going on, but some people don't. People don't have jobs when you have problems with their money. So when your boss find's out they get fired.Something so simple like that you could lose your job's & you barley have money or have no money at all.

    September 21, 2010 at 11:29 am |
  96. Liya

I disagree on the recession. I disagree because of the way people struggle. I say that in a way meaning people with no money are making the economy's recession go down. The economy should do its best to try and higher the interest of people. The economy should also lower the struggle for citizens knowing what the world is going through!!!!

  97. Hannah

I think the recession is not over on June of 2009 because our families are still suffering from taxes, other resources in the United States, and we should REALLY put this to an end.

While many more companies are embracing the tough time and lowering prices, most companies have to raise prices to stay alive in the world of business.

I think that the recession is over although other people might not think so. This might take a while for you to realize that it's over. Even though people are still out of work it takes time to know as I once said. It might take a year or it might take a month or sooner. you never know.

    September 21, 2010 at 11:34 am |
  100. Lakeisha

I agree that the recession is still going on because they are letting people go.They are sending people to another store .No i dont think that people should have to leave or quit their job. This what I say is that every body does not have a job. I really dont think the recession is over. No!!!!!!!

    September 21, 2010 at 11:36 am |
  101. melissa

I think the recession isn't over because people are still are getting laid off. people also are not getting a raise. Thats my opinion you may think different.

  102. Delmond

I think that recession is still going on, because they are cutting [community] bus stop .That not good because some people do not have a car and thats the only way that some people can get somewhere. The people that lost their jobs are some of the people that are riding [community buses].

Well, it's possible that the recession is over on paper, however I have not seen jobs coming back for my parents.

I do not think the recession is over. I still see people struggling to find jobs. I also see my parents having to pinch money and cut back on a lot of the things we used to do as a family. So I definitely do not belive that the recession is over.

I don’t think the recession is over. Even though the unemployment percent has gone down, it’s still extremely hard for people to get jobs. Even well educated adults still have a hard time finding a job. My dad still has a hard time with his job as an electrician because not many new buildings are being made due to no money. A lot of houses are still being foreclosed and it is still really hard to sell your house on the market.

I don’t think the recession is over because the job percents have not increased and people need jobs to make money so the unemployment rate is going to be the same. I think the recession will be over when the job percents increase. So when those percents go down I believe you will see a drastic change in the economy not yet though.

I think the recession is over because if they waited until a year later to tell us because they wanted to make sure that its true then I think it is. Ive never really know much about the recession so I cant form an honest opinion on the subject but ive seen how its effected the people around so whatever the recession is it needs to stop.

I do not believe the recession is over because many parents are still out of jobs. Also it is harder for people in general to find a job because most companies are still suffering and cannot afford to pay them. I have had my jobs for a few years but people saying its over doesn’t change anything, we need action to prove that the recession is over.

I believe that the recession is not over. People are still having hard times trying to find jobs and houses are still getting foreclosed. When this stops happening I will believe that is over. But as of right now it’ s not looking that good.

I highly disagree that the recession is over. I am a senior in high school and I still have not had my first job yet. People keep getting laid off everyday, and it’s impacted my family. My dad was just told a couple weeks ago, that he could be loosing his job because there is no work. With him being a construction worker, I don’t understand how he could loose his job if we are out of the recession. Being jobless for me makes me feel younger than I really am. I really want to become independent in this country, but it’s hard for me to do so, when businesses can’t hire you because they can’t afford to.

I think the Recession is not over because it is still super hard to find a job. I am a senior in high school and I have looked for a job but not able to get one. Nobody is really hiring right now but I still try. It is also hard for people who have lost there job and try to find a job but can’t. I think we will know when the recession is over when people are actually starting to get jobs and money

I don’t believe the recession is over nor has it been over. I have family that have been greatly impacted by the recession. Whether it be losing their jobs or not being able to find one, they are impacted by the recession. And as a senior I am now being affected because it is very difficult to get a job. The recession is definitely not over.

I don’t believe the recession is over. Driving through neighborhoods in my community there is always at least one house with a foreclosure sign in the front yard. Before the recession I did not have a clue there was ever such a thing as foreclosure. Once I see the housing market come out of its rut I will believe the recession is over.

I think that the recession is far from over. There are still families struggling to make the best out of the nothing that we still have. There are still people who don’t have jobs and people in need of work that they still can’t find. If the recession was truly over don’t you think that the unemployment rate would have dropped more then a mere fraction of a percent?. So in my personal opinion this country has a lot more work to be done before we can truly say we are out of a recession

I don’t think the recession is over because houses are still a lot of money. It is still hard to get a job, and things keep getting more and more expensive.

I am a senior in high school; and I noticed that the recession is starting to end because this time last year was jobless. I now pay for all my extra stuff like school clothes and going out plus gas. Fortunately I have a decent job that will pay for those things now. But I do think that in time the recession will end.

I do not think the recession is over for more than one reason. There are still many houses that have been taken over by the bank or on the fast track to be taken over. Also it is still difficult to find a job, I’m a senior and if I tried to find a job in fast food 5 years ago as a senior it would be easy; but now with the economy the way it is fast food jobs are hiring adults because a lot of them they have families to take care of.

The recession is not over. There are still people that are unemployed and it is still hard to find jobs. I have been employed for a year now and they haven’t said anything to me about cutting jobs. We are hiring if anything. The housing market sucks. No one is going to buy a house if they don’t have a job to get money. It’s all a chain, if you are unemployed and have no money you can’t buy things, such as a house and if no one is buying houses then the realtors are out of a job. So it’s all a cycle.

we think that the recssoin is not over because there are still a ton of people we know and all over america with out a job. like on your other reort mr. azuz , [school officials] should have another way way to save $ at a school than making someone pay $400 to ride a bus. and that is only a couple of reasons the recession is NOT OVER!

I'm a senior in high school and I don’t think the Recession is even close to being over. Jobs aren’t improving, and it seems like the prices of necessities are increasing as in food, gas, insurance, etc. If the recession were over then there would be more people with jobs, and not so many struggling. The cost of living is so high right now that a lot of people are barley getting by yet they’re working their butts off at the same time.

I have to disagree with the National Bureau of Economic Research because even though they say that the secession is over people all over the country are still having hard times finding jobs, their houses are only raising in value by a little bit and worst off all people are being forced to file for bankruptcy. At home I have to deal with the issues of the economy, my parents are searching for second jobs, finding ways to make the next house payment with help from friends and family. Most of the problems are caused by not having the money needed and ending having to charge it on a credit card.

I highly disagree the recession is over. I’m a senior in high school and am still looking for a job. It is hard going in and out of business’ and still being told no because they can’t afford to higher me. Being jobless makes it harder for me to do the things I need to get through in life and having no kind of job experience is a let down. I highly disagree the recession is anywhere near over, especially if it was over in June of 2009.

    September 21, 2010 at 12:08 pm |

I believe that the recession is not over. I think this because there are still so many people out there that are desperate for a job but are unable to find one, because nobody is hiring. Also there are so many houses going up for foreclosure and people are loosing their houses or their just going bankruptcy. So my personal opinion is that it isn’t over, and it probably won’t be for a while.

From my point of view, the recession is not over. As a senior in High school, my family wanted my main focus to be on studying and graduating, but my parents as managers had to cut a lot of people from their duties and my sister and I have to work now, basically as doing community service.

I believe the recession is not over, but it will soon be ending. Everyone is still having money problems and finding a job is still very hard. Everyone’s financial problems are not as bad as they used to be so that is why I believe it will be over soon.

I do not agree that the recession is over. The fact that it is so difficult to find a job right now is proof that we are not out of recession. I am a senior in high school and have been looking for a job for several months to start saving for college and life after graduation, but most places are not hiring and when they are they are hiring older people with more experience over high school students who have never previously worked.

Until our economy shows consistent growth and our housing market gets better, we will continue in the recession. I don't see it happening soon with our tremendous national debt.

I think that the economists that say that the recession is over are lying.
I believe they are claiming that the recession is over in order to get people to being so careful with their money. They are trying to trick people into spending money so that it will lead to us getting out of the recession.

The recession can't be over yet. Unemployment rates are still at 9.6%, houses still are not being sold at high enough prices, and people still aren't spending much money. How can the recession be over if the country still has all the symptoms of a recession?

    September 21, 2010 at 12:37 pm |

I think the recession is not over because people stil do not want to spend money, the unemployment rate is still very low and house prices are still very high.

I do not think that the recession is over it is completely over then why do a lot of people have jobs, and housing crisis is not solved and the umemployment rate is too high

I hope the recession is over, although i dont know with as many people that are unemployed how that could be possible. I think if we can come up with more perminent jobs than maybe we can pull it off, the president's not so perminent highway construction jobs are great and dandy until the jobs over than their back to square-one. No to mention those roads are adding to our extreme national debt. At this point unless taxes start going way up the U.S. as we know it may fail to exist.

Although they say that the ressesion is over, I think in many places ,such as the small town I live in, the ression has just started to hit us and we are suffering now reither than earlier on when other parts of the united states suffered.

The recession isn't even close to over. How can they say its over when the housing market, the unemployement rate, and the economy are rising, but still quite much lower compared to what they used to be. There is still much effort needed all around to bring the recession to a actual hault. The larger cities may be coming out of the recession faster but what about the rest of us who live in small towns? It takes a much longer time to turn things around.

The National Bureau of Economic Research may say the recession is over, but people are still feeling the effects of the recession. The unimployment rate is still high and many families are finding it hard to keep ahold of their homes, schools are chargeing parents more so that they can keep the school open or get the kids to school. So in my opinion the recession is not over, it is just slowing down.

I believe its up to the U.S citizens for when you can call the recession over.
The reason i said that is because when more people will start looking for a job instead of drawing disability or unemployment. So i would have to say no, not until people will start per-suing a better life.

The recession may be over, but the effects are still penetrating through American society. No, the economy may not actually be "receding", but it is not getting much better. Many people are still faced with unemployment and/or housing issues. The people who are being directly effected right now most likely do not think the recession is over. In name only, the recession may be over, but the consequences are not.

The recession isn't going to be over until people don't fear losing their job every day. With all the awful lay-off's and downsizing that is still happening EVERYWHERE, how can anyone declare that the recession is over? Clearly, it's not over. Were still struggling with unemployment, bad economy, horrible gas prices, and just high prices in general. More and more people are getting laid off because the business they work for are struggling financially. The recession is in no way over.

I do not believe that the recession is over because there are still too many issues that families are going through do the economy. The economic situations most people are in restrict them from buying new houses or getting jobs because the options for new jobs are so limited.

I believe that the recession is not over because nothing major has truly changed. As a student in high school jobs are still hard to get. Everyone seems to have the same spending habits as well so in my opinion nothing has changed since 2007 when we entered the recession.

I don’t think the recession is over, I don’t think it will be over until everyone who had a job and lost it, had a home and lost it. are back to where they were before. I think we’re on the way to the end, like less credit card spending but I think it still will be a while until the ressesion it all the wat over.

I believe we are still in the recession because there are still plenty of people in this world today that are with out jobs. From personal friend relationships I know how hard it is to live in this recession. Even applying for jobs in our community is hared for teenagers our age because there are many older people that are out looking for jobs and they will give them to them first. I believe since the percents have not gone up on the employment rate then there is no change in the recession.

I do not think the rescission is over. Because my family would like to buy a house but they still can’t. My father makes over 2,000 dollars a week and my mom makes 500 dollars a week so we should be doing great but really we are not things are so bad that we still cant make it very easily.

I don’t think the recession is over because millions of people are still living with out jobs and no money to support there families. Just because the government states that we are no longer in a recession doesn’t make everything back to the way it used to be before. Once the recession is over millions of people will have a job and have the money to start supporting them selves and there familys.

I believe that the recession is not over because there are too many things going wrong. Houses are going under businesses are going bankrupt and gas prices are increasing. It’s too hard to even live now days. Everything cost so much and not a lot of people have jobs. I think we are in such debt that it’s going to be many years before we get out of the recession.

I do not agree with the statement that the recession is over. It is still near impossible to find a job in today’s world, especially if you are a teenager because all of the teenage jobs such as fast food, coffee, etc have been taken by adults who have no other job opportunities. Job percents have not increased and the homeless population is still as high as it ever was. The recession does not just end it is a long process and the process has only been started.

    September 21, 2010 at 3:59 pm |
  202. Nick

The recession is over I would have to say people are getting more and more money back there a lot more job openings as for the people who are homeless there just poor and don’t take the effort to go out and get a job or a education to get a career.

It doesn’t seem to me that the economic recession is over. There is still a lot of people who are jobless and even more now than when the recession started in 2009. It only seems like the recession is over because the President has created a lot of temporary jobs in the construction field. When all of the infrastructure is done being repaired, what jobs will be created for all of the people who depend on the construction industry to live? I believe that we are going to be heading toward a whole new recession and it will be worse that this one was.

No I don’t think the recession is over. Many Americans are still suffering from foreclosure and unemployment. The unemployment rate has still failed to go down and the cost of houses that have undergone foreclosure has gone up nearly $5,100. Many Americans still can’t get jobs because businesses don’t have enough money to keep paying their employees and need to lay people off just to stay open.

I don’t believe the recession is over. Due to the fact that our country is still over a trillion dollars in debt, people are still having trouble with jobs and getting laid off, and raising the taxes doesn’t help either. It seems to me that we are going more into debt then into a recession. All of our solutions include paying more money, rather than saving money to me.

    September 21, 2010 at 4:00 pm |
  206. Skippy

I think the recession isn’t over because there are still so many things that are affecting us. The job rate still being higher then when it was “declared” over (recession) means that it can’t be over. Maybe the stock market has come back to life a little bit and house prices are slowly revaluing but so many other things are hindering our economy. Gas prices are still a giant factor and food stamps. There are a lot of missed things still needing to be taken care of before our recession here in the States is over. Like since i am a senor and i drive to school it kills my gas tank and i know that if gas prices went down it would help.

I do not think that the recession is over in our world and I really do not believe it ended in June of 2009. In the town, we have many small businesses that are still closing because of not selling and other money issues. I know my uncle owned his own business and now only can do it part time because he had to get another job to pay for this company and our family, so I believe many people are still struggling and we still are in a recession.

The recession is not over because of the simple fact that there are no jobs and low income families are being pushed out of there homes because they can’t afford there bills because the lose of jobs.

  210. morgan

I think that if the recession is over then people should all have jobs and not lose them. The value of money is still low. It's not worth as much. Houses are for sale still because people cant afford to keep their houses. They try to get more than what they paid for to get more money. Sometimes that doesn't work though. I believe we are still in the recession because people are still having money problems. I also believe that the recession could be over because people choose to be unemployed and move houses. It's by choice, not because they have to move. We could just be feeling the recession but it’s not really there.

    September 21, 2010 at 4:01 pm |
  211. Jasmyn

I don’t think the recession is over because there are many people that are unemployed. It is really hard for teens to get jobs. It is really important that teens have a job especially for seniors and the teens getting out of foster care. Personally I have no job and I have to move out of my foster home in March, with no money. If this recession was over than it would not be as hard to get a job. There are also lots of homeless people and if the recession was over there would not be as many homeless people. I think that it is a lie to get people to calm down. Things like food and normal house hold objects are ridiculously high as well. o I really doubt that the recession is over.

You really don't ever know when the recession is over. To me you cant just declare that the recession is over if you aren't 100% sure of it. It could never be over, there is still going to be one or multiple people that are still struggling! The people will decide when it will be over or not... it is your choice...

No, I do not think the recession. People are still out of work with little to no money. Lots of people are going through foreclosures on their houses and I mean lots. At least 6 just in the FIRST section of my neighborhood. Maybe its getting better but we are not close to being out of this.

    September 21, 2010 at 4:02 pm |

I think the recession is over. I know that the recession has dropped the farthest that it will and is now slowly climbing up (good economy).
I know it has gotten better because my mom doesn't come home anymore telling our family that another family has moved out of the school district due to unemployment or foreclosed homes. It has gotten better, but as good as it use to be.
I believe that there will always be unemployment, but there are less and less homes being foreclosed. We are just getting by and thats okay.
I am just happy to know that my mom isn't coming home and giving us news of family moving to a different state or moving in with their own family (parents). It will continue to get better, but it will take time. It won't just all of a sudden get better because thats not the way change happens, change takes time and we all need to realize to.

It is not over yet we all know that not until the homeless have food, shelter, clothes on their back and a paying job. I go out and see homeless every week and all I know is I want to help them. Most of them have children and animals they try to feed and take care of. when people say there life is bad I say “no it is not because I want you to walk down the street and look at how many people are begging for money and how many people have to sleep in the rain" and then I tell them I want to search up how many homeless people die a year and tell them " there now you know how good your life is because you do not have a life like there's sad and lonely." I think about those kids who would think just a little plate of food would be like a year’s worth to them and I am thankful for what I have for god has giving me a chance to help those who do not have one. And I know that I am here to help people like the homeless in this time I am an American and I am here to help.

    Sincerely yours truly Courtney 🙂

In my opinion, the recession's over...but people aren't going to help the economy any because they're scared they're going to lose money and go into a deeper recession. I don't think the recession is completely over. In some ways it may be. But not completely. Like all the houses that are being lost to foreclosure, and the fact that people still can't buy everything they need or want. The amount that they are paying for stuff is too much, so they can't afford that. So when they use their credit cards, it causes them to go farther into debt cause they can't pay the credit card bills either. It's really and endless cycle. We won't ever be fully out of recession. That's just how it is.

I do not think that the recession is over. There are still so many people who have lost their jobs, homes, and money. Also, the unemployment rate was at 9.5% and is now at 9.6%. So, i believe the recession is just as much alive as it was before.

I feel that the recession is not over. The unemployment rate is still high and there are people with college degrees who cannot find work. My dad always tells me how it was so easy to get a job when he was my age and now I’m lucky I’ve I even get a call for an interview. It’s tough.

I don’t think that the recession is over because people are still losing their jobs, and unemployment rates have only raised .1 percent. The national bureau of economic may have declared the recession over but according to what the people say and what your poll says it’s far from over.

I don’t see how the government can say the recession is over. With the real estate market and the unemployment not getting any better than when we were “still in a recession”. What evidence is there to show that we have crawled out of and were not in the same size hole as in 2007? We ARE still in a recession.

  241. Kyle

I do not feel it's over because it has been 2 years since my mother has been able to get a job. Living off of welfare and the government has not been easy. Moving from a 5 bedroom house to a 1 story 3 bedroom was a huge change and we still are struggling to pay the bills.

    September 21, 2010 at 5:10 pm |
  242. Dylan

I believe that we are still in a recession because our job rate has actually fallen a percent; however the housing rate did climb but people can’t afford to stay in their homes so they are forced to move out and search for a new home. This is why we are seeing so many houses owned by the banks. I think that the people who decide whether we are in a recession or not made a decision too early and should of waited more, because we can go into another dip any second. We’re not out of the woods yet.

    September 21, 2010 at 5:10 pm |
  243. Jeff

I personally don’t think that the recession is over, things have not seemed to change. Many people are still jobless, and gas prices are only seem to be growing. So although statistics show we’re out of the recession, I believe that have still not come out.

  245. Sarah

I disagree that the recession is over because there is still so many people out of jobs and struggling just to get food on the table. Sellers have to lower their prices just to match it with what is reasonable now to buyers. People are working harder and not getting paid enough; we have not recovered from anything it has only gotten worse.

    September 21, 2010 at 5:11 pm |
  246. Kelsey

CNN blog: I don’t think the recession is quite over yet. I remember that, a few years ago, my family could afford to go out to eat or have small family outings whenever we felt like going out, but now, just as when the recession was still “ongoing”, we have to plan out when and how often we can afford to do anything at all. Just because one organization says the recession is over doesn’t mean that everyone can just stop worrying about money, food, or any other necessity.

    September 21, 2010 at 5:11 pm |
  247. Tim

The recession does not seem like it is over. Yes, the housing market has gone up a small amount, but it is still very low. I think the main concept of the recession is not the housing market, but it is the unemployment rate that is still affecting our economy now.

    September 21, 2010 at 5:12 pm |
  248. James

I don’t think we are out of a recession, just because a few prices dropped and the housing market got a little better doesn’t mean a thing. There are still thousands unemployed and major companies are still lying off workers due to expense cuts and alleged cut backs on spending. The recession is affecting schools too, teachers are being laid off and there isn’t enough money for all the books we need.

    September 21, 2010 at 5:12 pm |
  249. Megan

The rescission isn’t going to be over until the percent of unemployment goes down and people get their jobs back. It is still affecting many families and it’s going to take a long time to recover from all the loss.

    September 21, 2010 at 5:13 pm |
  250. Day

The recession doesn’t feel like it’s over at all. The housing crisis is still happening, as well as many people don’t have jobs or are laid off. Schools in the country are forced to do things, like a six period day, to save money because they have very little of it. People around the country are still having trouble getting food and if we weren’t in the recession this would never happen.

    September 21, 2010 at 5:13 pm |
  251. Kyle

I definitely disagree that the recession is over. The economy is hardly changing at all and almost everyone I know is still experiencing some sort of economic struggle. My dad is working double and even triple overtime just to pay the bills each month.

    September 21, 2010 at 5:14 pm |
  252. James

I definatly disagree. Not only are we still in the recession but its continuing to get worse. How can we be out of the recession when facts show our unemployment rate is still very high, the housing market is still plummeting, and the government has done nothing to try to help the economy? I myself cannot find a job and both of my parents aren’t finding anything either. We need something like the “New Deal” to even get a start on our economy recovering. The economy doesn’t just fix itself; we should already know that from our history.

I do not believe the recession is over because there are still many people layed off and people getting out of college without high opportunities to get jobs. Also many people are still having to give up there houses and cars because of the shape of the economy. For these reasons until the economy is good and unemployment is down if the recession is deemed over we will quickly be put into a new one.

well the recession can not get better over night. It takes a process and people aren't losing as many jobs and homes now. So, slowly we have been comming along it just seems like we are in a bad time. As we go through the times the economy will get better.

To me the Recession is still not over because the economical crisis is still a problem. It's certainly true that there is some tension between the serious (and very real) that folks are seeing all around them and the NBER's "official" recession call.

I dont think the recession is not over. The reson why is becuase people are still losing there jobs. And if they haven't lost there jobs yet there buissnes are in danger of going out. Wich is very sad 😦 That people have to go through that. I know I wouldn't like that. I am sure a lot of other people wouldn't ether! I also think that the people who have a job should be happy and not say, "Oh I hate this job" or "I am going to quiet" never ever do that. Even more now!!!!!!!! Thats my thought on the whole idea.. Thanks for listening.

I think the recession is not over, because I know many people myself that are still suffering from it. People are losing jobs and houses. There are still people out there that are very poor and homeless because of it and I think more people should be back in homes and jobs before the recession is considered over.

    September 21, 2010 at 7:46 pm |
  270. Sophie

I think that the Recession is not over in some cases of people are loseing there jobs and homes.Banks are not loaning money to small businesses which is making it harder for people to get by and to be able to do more things which require large sums of money. But there are some cases that the Recession is over is that some people are starting to spend money and the stock market has gone up. So the Recession is not over because if it was over the banks would be loaning money, people would have jobs ,and not be losing their homes.

i dont think the recession is over, because people are still loosing there jobs and cant find any, people are also loosing there homes. The economy is horrible!!

I think that it has bottomed out, but we still need to recover. It won't get much worse, though.

we say its not over we have condos that never got finished we are all losing jobs in the whole united states and that reason is the recession now look at the economy and say are we still in a recession Yes.

    September 21, 2010 at 8:10 pm |
  274. Shelby

Is the recession over yet? I think it isn't over yet because some people are having money problems like there are a lot more bankrupts now then there was last year, more and more people are losing their jobs and are getting laid off. If you think this is bad the worst is yet to come.

    September 21, 2010 at 8:10 pm |
  275. Malachi

I think that the ressesion is somewhat over it all depends on how you veiw it.

    September 21, 2010 at 8:18 pm |
  276. Jillene

Yeah the recession may be over, but it still effects many families around the united states. EVERYWHERE and probably families all over are suffering from losses of jobs and homes just basically thier lives were turned upside down. So the recession may be over but in a way it's not.

  277. Johnny

So many houses are for sale right now, the unemployment rate is 9.6% when it was 9.5% in June 09, how is the recession over??

    September 21, 2010 at 8:31 pm |
  278. kenneth

we've reached a record high in unemployment and if we aren't working we aren't getting anywhere

    September 21, 2010 at 8:58 pm |
  279. Mitchell

The recession isn't even close to being over. This is mainly because of the cost of housing and the unemployment rate. Another reason would be because most people aren't spanding money like they use to, so they think the recession isn't over either.

    September 21, 2010 at 9:14 pm |
  280. Sara

I do not think that the recession is over. There are still many U.S. citizens without jobs and people that are bankrupt and losing their homes. People with families who are still on food stamps because they have hardly enough income to even keep a roof over their heads. So no i don't think the recession is over. I think its really just the beginning of the most horrible recession we've ever had.

    September 21, 2010 at 9:16 pm |
  281. Natalie

    It's over?

    September 21, 2010 at 9:35 pm |
  282. Allie

I definitely do not think that the recession is over. There are still so many people without jobs, and people are still getting laid off. I think that in order for the recession to be over everybody needs to have a job and be getting paid a salary, so that they can afford enough accommodations to survive.

    September 21, 2010 at 9:36 pm |
  283. Marcos

I can't say were out of the economy problems, but I think the worst has past. Remember pennies and dollars are just copper and paper that represent our countries value.

  284. Dino

No the recession is just a word there is no way its over, houses are still worth half of what they once where, people are still losing jobs and all I think this is doing is giving people hope that there is, a light at the end of the tunnel.

    September 21, 2010 at 9:49 pm |
  285. Kurt

No I do not think the recession is over. The prices of houses have just gone higher and the unemployment is still very high. I also think that the recession will come back in a few months.

    September 21, 2010 at 10:20 pm |
  286. Trae

I disagree with the recession being over completely. You know you are always going to go down in your money. I also disagree with it being over in the economy. If one major store goes down, or we don't have enough of whatever we need to make money. another thing is if it was over everybody dedicated to getting a job would have one.

    September 21, 2010 at 10:22 pm |
  287. victor

I do not believe the recession is over yet because many house prices are definitely decreasing since 2007. We shouldn't jump to conclusions to fast. The unemployment rate is also decreased since 2008. We really should think about this more thoroughly.

I personally don’t think the recession is over because the jobless rate is still at 9.6 %, people are also losing jobs and people re having trouble finding jobs and qualifying for them. I think the recession will be over when economists can finally breathe a sigh of relief. But, as of right now, that’s not the case.

I think the recession is over but it is still hard to get jobs. I mean my brothers are looking for jobs and they still don't have a job. so at the same time it does not feel like the recession is over, And soon I'm going to be looking for a job and I hope that the recession is really over.

I think the recession isn't over yet. I think things are ending, but its gonna take awhile to be make them back to normal. The stocks are going to take awhile to build back up, and same with the housing. People are still getting layed off, and or haven't gotten their jobs back. If the recession was over in June 2009, why are we still struggling?

    September 22, 2010 at 10:23 am |

People are having tough times, therefore, its not over. In my eyes. 😦

Its not over, in my eyes. People are still loosing their jobs, and many are unemployed. The stock market is still down, and people are loosing their houses, and not being able to pay bills. Things are getting better, but its gonna take awhile for it to get back to normal. The way i see it is if people are still struggling, were still in the recession. No matter what the government says.

No i dont think the recession is over because because every day people are losing their jobs. And many people are losing their homes.
i think we still need to improve for it to be over.

    September 22, 2010 at 11:01 am |
  300. Elizabeth

I don't think that the recession is fully over, but I think it is improving. There are less people without jobs and less people below the poverty line but there are still people that need help. I think it will take awhile for the recession to be completely over. But I am glad that it is improving!

    September 22, 2010 at 11:14 am |
  301. Mike

People are still using debit more than credit. The economy is still bad, but better than what it was before. People are still getting houses, but a lot of people still are not working. Unemployement is high and home values are low. It will take time for us to recover and heal. We need to work harder to change the economy. The government says we are out of the recession, but it still feels like we are in it.

    September 22, 2010 at 11:17 am |

I don't believe the recession is over, because the economy isn't completely fixed the way it should be. There's still too many people losing their houses & everything. How can it be over, if everyone still don't have enough to get by. cause live is supposed to great, but why would you have to spend all your time working & worrying to even wonder if you can even make it a month longer?

    September 22, 2010 at 11:52 am |
  307. Maddi

We're a long way away from being over this recession. While jobs may be popping up in some places, many other areas are still suffering from unbelievably high unemployment rates, houses are still foreclosed, and prices are still higher than normal.
My friend has been trying to apply for a job for two years now with no success because the unemployment rate, which in the state of Florida is at 11.6%.

the goverment said the recession has been over since last june , thats just another lie from our own government. the government said the recession is over so that people would get up and go search for a new job.

To me the recession is still an on going problem. people are still jobless and the stock marcket is declining!!! We need to have all of our goods, cars, ect made in the USA for more jobs and so it will say, Made in the USA. Why pay other countries for the stuff were buying, they can make there own things for the country, there just taking our jobs away.

    September 22, 2010 at 1:16 pm |
  311. Joel

I disagree. The unemplyment rate is still at over 9%, there are still a lot of foreclosures and the economy still hasn't picked up. People aren't spending more, so things are much the same........maybe slightly better................. but not so much to call off the recession just yet.........I realize that, yes, things have improved and, yes, we ARE in a recovery period but I dont think that signals an end to recession. Things are going to be tough for a while.......for everyone....... i suspect that calling off the recession was a way to make people start spending money again. Even though its officially "over", we still have a long way to go.

I don't understand how they could even think the recession is close to over. When unemployment is worse then when it started, that doesn't mean things are getting better. I think that the economy is going to get a lot worse before it gets better. Also, I think that something big is going to have to happen to turn the economy around – Erik

Why do people think the Recession is over? I see people walking around with "will work for food" signs. This issue should not be discussed unless it's Positive that it's over

The percentage of people still struggling, and living paycheck to paycheck is still high. Therefore, it's not over.

    September 22, 2010 at 5:47 pm |
  319. Camille

No, I don't think the recession is over at all. If you think back to June 2009, most everyone can agree that this past 14 months have been the hardest on families across the country. With job loss, the new health plan, and families going into debt, the recession seems far from over. It may be "technically" over in numbers/statistics, but it will take a while for us Americans to feel that we can be stable again financially.

I think opinions on whether or not the recession is over varies for every person. I personally, think the recession is not over because there are many people everywhere in the country that are still unable to find jobs. There are people that are struggling to keep their family happy and provide all the right needs for them. Thankfully, my family isn't struggling nearly as much as some families but I feel bad for the ones that are and wish there was something I could do to help them.

    September 22, 2010 at 6:23 pm |
  323. Courtney

My opinion on the recession is that it's not over. I mean theres millions of people out there that are struggling. It's hard to find jobs & so many people are losing their homes. So, I would have to say it's not over.

I do not believe the recession is over. Their are still people without homes and live in shelters, and we cant forget about. My family was effected by this economy but we are doing better and in school wise i don't see many people in my sister collage as i used too. The recession is NOT over. Our economy is becoming more difficult to deal with. Just because what the National Bureau of Economic Research reported doesn't mean the recession is actually over.

    September 22, 2010 at 8:11 pm |
  332. Tyler

The recession is definately not over....I will agree that we are bouncing back little by little but i see foreclosure signs all over my neighborhood and people selling houses all because they dont have the money to pay for it. I am ready for this recession to end completely and i think most people feel the same way.

    September 22, 2010 at 8:13 pm |
  333. Maggie

I think the recession is not over. For some people the recession is over for them but; many people all over America still don't have jobs and are homeless. Around 2.3million homes are under forclosure. There are not many jobs right now; so people can't pay their bills or for food for their family. The economy is doing better then last year but it is still not over. I think it will be better sometime next year. But right now I don't think the National Bureau of Economic Research should say the recession is over because it's not.

    September 22, 2010 at 8:14 pm |
  334. Addie

The 'Great Recession" is not over. So many people are still without jobs and not as many people are spending their money as when the economy is better. We will not be out for as long as people decide to get on the job hunt and fight against this recession.

    September 22, 2010 at 8:29 pm |

I don't think the recession is over. If it was, more people will be getting jobs and there will be a noticable increase in economy. So far, I haven't noticed anything and niether have my parents.

I don't think the the recession is still not over because people dont just go shop or go on trips like they used to. There also is nobody that spends a lot of money like they used to either

    September 22, 2010 at 8:53 pm |
  339. Eva

I do not think the recession is over. It's way too hard to buy a house, much less sell one. While it is better, there are still too many foreclosures and way too many people are involuntarily without jobs (not including people like stay- at- home moms or children, because children aren't even old enough).

    September 22, 2010 at 9:17 pm |
  340. Zach

I don't understand how you could say that the recession is over. First of all the housing market really has not gotten better and the employment rate has gotten worse! I believe this might just be a cover up to make people happier. JUST LOOK AT THE STATS.

    September 22, 2010 at 9:29 pm |
  341. Abby

The recession is not over! Is it improving? Yes! All across America, Schools have to cut budgets, just like one of the Schools CNN Student news mentioned is considering Asking a fee to ride the bus. If the recession was truly over, that wouldn't have been proposed.

    September 22, 2010 at 10:48 pm |
  342. Ryan

The actual recession by definition might be over, but the effects of it will linger for awile now while our nation tries to stabalize the economy back to normal.

    September 22, 2010 at 11:31 pm |
  343. Bonnie

I don't feel like the recession is over yet. It may have leveled off a bit, but the forclosure rate is still up in my state and the threat of teacher layoffs and class size increases make it feel like the recessions is far from over.

    September 23, 2010 at 12:13 am |
  344. Paul

I guess its not over, i mean alot of people are either really poor, or they're getting laid off at work, its actually happening at the hospital my mom works at, the hospital isn't making as much money as they should, so they have to fire people, i think my mom said they fired like 35 people just because of that.

  345. nolan

No i don't believe the recession is over because at this moment my town is trying everything it can to try and raise enough money for our library to stay in tact and my dad is a construction worker and not many people want to spend money on there house and we work hard and then i look over and i see people that are "supposeidley" poor using food stamps to buy food thats well over what they need to live people abuse the things they have and its not right.

The recession is most definitely not over. As said by books like Aftershock, it is going to get much worse before it gets better. Investing in gold and silver would be a great thing to do, even if your just a child. Golds value will always go up and down depending on the market, but the dollar has already lost most of its value.

I don't think that the recession is over yet. Although the governmental business people are saying that it is, there are still lots of people struggling from the recession, and whether or not the recession IS over, the effects of it have not shallowed yet.

I definitely don't think that the recession is over. There are way too many people struggling to keep their jobs. If it was over a lot more people would be getting jobs and not losing them.

I don't think it's over yet.I was house hunting a few eeks ago and you wouldn't belive how many houses were forclosed because people couldn't afford to live there. And that's not the only issue- jobs are getting a little better but really how do you give everybody that needs to have a job the job they want or can at least stand doing? You can't.

I think that the recession might be close to over but its still not over yet. Alot of people are still losing jobs or not being anle to get jobs. Some people have come down to selling their homes or not even having a home! To me the recession is not over and won't be for a while.

I dont think the Recession is over cause there is still many people without jobs but yes it is lower then last year but still until they come out with many jobs so the rate will decrease we will still be in this Recession

Jobs are coming back slowly. It will be a long time until we can balance out the economy. The economy is slowly rising and in a year or two it will be back up were we would like it.

I feel that the recession is not over. My mom just got a job after about 2 years. This is the longest that she went without a job. I think that it's OUTRAGEOUS that my mother had to wait for that amount of time to finally get a PART TIME job.

The National Bureau of Economic Research reports the recession is officially over but I believe that small towns, like my own, are in the worst part of it. People are having trouble finding work while those with a job are scared of lay-offs and cuts. Everyone is struggling: businesses to hang on and families to keep their homes during this tough time. Because of funding issues, two local schools will be shut down come next year and bus routes will be drastically changed. The NBER might say the recession has officially ended but, through the eyes of the American people, it won’t be over until things start improving.

The recession may technically be over, but the effects of the recession are obviously still causing problems. Though Obama is still fighting for the healthcare reform to take effect, even when it does, it will only worsen the situation. People will get lazier, and jobs will be no more abundant. America needs to revert back to the productive days, when everyone knew the value of a dollar and motivation was plentiful.

I don't believe that the recession is over. Because the unemployment actually went up, not down. I think that announcing the fact that the rescission isn't going to help anything.

I believe that though the statistics may say the recession is over, we have yet to come to see a full recovery. We are moving at a very slow pace. The normal recovery pace for our economy is 6-7%, and we are moving at a 3% recovery rate, which is why many fear a “double dip recession”. The economy is still down, the housing market is still flat, and many Americans are still unemployed. This personally affects everyone, including myself. However, this mostly affects me because my future is unstable. In conclusion, I disagree with the statement that the recession is over regardless of the statistics.

The idea that the recession is over is both true and false. Many families haven't been doing better so they have a right to believe, for themselves, that it isn't over. Though, if you look at the country in a whole you can see how its gotten better. So, in country it is, in families it isn't. We shouldn't relax just yet/

There is no question that the recession is still surrounding us. Stats have proven many people have lost jobs, homes and even their lives because of this. Discussions on whether you have enough money to not worry about it shouldn't matter, majority of your community is still suffering from the recession, for instance, local businesses have closed, your friends and family, maybe eve you have lost homes and jobs because of the recession. So whether you have money to spare does not mean the recession is over.

NO! the recession isn't over! As long as there are still loads of people without jobs i would say the recession is not over. My family is still not over the recession and neither is alot of people in our small town that we live in. We still live in a society where every one is "money- hungry". As long as every one is still money-hungry we will still be in a recession for many years to come.

The recession is still not over, but improving. Though, I believe it will end and come back to normalty. However, I do think a second recession is ahead in our future. The NBER are unreliable and are making false statements. The recession is still going, and all of us know it. Until the economy changes and jobs are up, it is not over. They just want to say it's over to support the politicians in office. To make it look like they are making it better. Ya right.

I completley disagree that the Recession is over. If you haven't noticed you should know that a lot of people are still unemployed or have very little pay. Also a lot of people are homeless. I don't know about your family, but my family is not doing so well in this economy. With my dad losing his job, we have had to downsize. Such, a smaller house, no more going out to eat, or shopping for things are not an absolute need. So in my opinion, the Recession has just begun.

I do not beleive that the recession is not over. There are still so many people with out a home, and a job! sp i think that we are still havein economic troubles because jobs are laying off people because they do not have money to pay for their emploies to work there. It costs more to go to collage than my family pays for our house. Some kids say go to collage or get a job like this is so easy...but where will the money come from for collage? And right now collage grads are graduating with no job offers in site- and those they can get pay so little, by time you pay for gas to get to work, you are not making enough to get by at all. You go to an interview, then don't get a call letting you know they chose not to hire you, they can treat you rudely becuase they know you are desperate! They offer terrible wages, no benifits, and "flexible" hours now means you have to be available whenever they want you to be. Before the recession we were talking about quality of life, vacations and so on. Now companies can demand you live and breathe for them. Live to work, in order to work to live. Kids can't get before/after school jobs now because there are adults willing to do the jobs that used to be considered part time kid stuff...not a "real" job. I think things are still changing for the worst, it is like the medevil days with the lords and the surfs. and we are the surfs.

I do not believe the recession is over. However, I do believe we are working our way toward ending it. If the recession was over, people would not be jobless and there would be no need for welfare. The oil spill created more problems for the economy and the whole country will be affected by it. There are still many businesses in my community that do not have a heavy flow of customers because of bad economic times and are going out of business. Also, there are schools being closed which will affect the education of many people. I will be affected by the recession because the solution to the recession can make permanent impacts on the future, such as tax raises, welfare, and gas prices.

My thoughts on the recession are that it's not over because many houses are still being taking by the bank and many people are out of work. I think it's going to take a while for the recession to get back to the way it was.

    October 1, 2010 at 12:00 am |
  457. Eric

The recession is not over. Many families are still suffering from the effects of the recession, especially mine. We have enough money in our paychecks to get through life, but it has become a paycheck by paycheck lifestyle.

There are even more families who are out of work and are completely dependent on welfare to get them through these troubling times. We can hope that the recession is over, but with the job market in the way it is and families still out of work. It's going to be a while before we can recover.

    October 1, 2010 at 2:40 pm |
  458. Erica

The recession never really affected me all that much, so I wouldn't know about it. For this reason, I don't think I'm qualified to give a definite answer.

However, a lot of freelancers and entrepreneurs (with extremely small home-businesses–most have only one or two employees) seem to be doing extremely well, even better since the recession began.

Artists especially are becoming more and more able to support themselves. Because real estate is cheaper than it ever was, personal studios and shops can finally be afforded by smaller businesses.

Recessions are just things you wait out. Eventually, the small businesses can be started and can begin to earn money and employ people that policy-ridden big businesses could never.

no the recession is not completely over because alot of people dont have jobs plus stuff costs more now then before

  463. Lindsey

The recession is not even close to being over. Regardless of what a particular group of people believe, you still see people losing their jobs, their families, their homes, and even their lives because of the effects of the recession. People might believe that the worst is over, but it's only begun.

Pay more then usual for starbursts? That's REALLY what defines an economic state of crisis for you? It's supply and demand, you want more starbursts they make you pay more... tell the homeless and unemployed people in the streets that they can stop being unhappy, because the recession is over.

The recession isnt over yet many people are still homeless and out of food, work and many other supplies we need to live our life. In major cities many people live on a sidewalk. Now, tell me do you really believe the recessions over?

Soon enough, they'll announce that we are in a second recession, and that the new one began before they even announced the end of the old one.

  468. Fiona

Really you think the recession is OVER no way it is if there are people out there hungry and with no money the recession is NOT over. I do not care what they say. It is not over for many people and saying it is over is just to get us to spend more and to relax that is DEFINATELY not happenning! We need government to step it up and put more money into our economy. The government is not doing enough for our economy which is causing the recession to go on and on. I believe it will never be over because it is what we make it be.

No, the recession is far from over. 10-12 People in my city have lost EVERYTHING they own from food, clothes, and pets! What is the president doing? I think it would be reasonable to preform a law suit. I thought our rights as The People, we can abolish te goverment if they dont preform thier duty. I doubt spending money will give us back money. how many I.O.U.'s do we have on us now?

I don't think the ressesion is over even though the democrats think it is....but it isn't obama's fault because the congress controls all of the money....even though obama can veto it they can still find away around the veto

I don't think that the recesion is really over. Homes are still being foreclosed and people are still being laid-off. The NBER might have said that the recession is "over" but what they really need to do is look around! 🙂

Yes i think its over because more businesses do well the better!!

I so disagree! If it was over more people would have jobs. It is not over.

I do not believe the recession is over, let alone ended last year. Foreclosures are are almost just as bad as they were when it started, and the unemployment rate is still awful. Perhaps the economy is starting to recover, but the recession is far from over.

    October 6, 2010 at 1:49 pm |
  476. Matt

The recession is not over...it may not be as bad as it was, but it is definetly not over. People still can't find jobs and houses are still being foreclosed along with many other problems.

In my opinion the resession is not over. Look how many lay offs there have been and how people have stopped going places because of the price in gas. Also a number of people have stopped shopping so that has got to tell you something not to mention people are still losing their houses.

people don't use their heads. who cares about the national "standards"? Ask yourself this. do i still have to save every penny i get? do i have the money to just go to the mall on Friday and buy a whole new wardrobe? no!!!!!!! we don't when you personally feel like the recession is over, then it's over.

No. (Sadly) I strongly believe it will not be over for quite some time.

I don't think the recession is over because there is still a lot of people without jobs, and people who have to work more than one job to keep up with the bills.

I don't agree. The recession isn't over until job loss is down to normal. We should stop giving all our jobs to china

no, because I know alot of people who are having alot of economic troubles, the president needs to do something, NOW!

    October 8, 2010 at 9:29 pm |

The recession is definately not over. If it was then we would not be paying all kinds of extra taxes for stuff that shouldnt even be taxed in
the first place. Plus my parents wanted to build a cover for our patio but they have to buy a builders permit (which is proof that you are building on your property which makes the value go up so they can tax you even MORE!) so they decided not to do it.

The reccession isn't over, because President Obama is destroying our country and putting us deep in dept.

There are many ways to tell that the recession is not over people are still without jobs, and they may think they are helping but they are just making harder for people with all the money the government is spending.

ive just heard that the unemployment rate is higher than ever and childrens hospitals are laying off people from where i am and they think that the recession is over because it is not

The recension will not be over until some positive results in the American jobless rate is shown. 9.6% now... 9.5% in two to three months.
